Quiles denies he tried to favor governor’s in-laws
By THE STAR STAFF
Designated Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) Secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez on Tuesday denied allegations he tried to bend the law to benefit the governor’s in-laws when he signed an executive order legalizing their home in a protected area of La Parguera, a coastal sector of Lajas.
During a committee meeting, senators questioned Quiles about the executive order he signed, which opponents of Gov. Jenniffer González Colón’s administration interpret as favoritism toward her in-laws. The controversy has been ongoing since the previous administration regarding a booth they operate in La Parguera.
Quiles stated that the administrative order was on his desk when he took office on Jan. 9. He claimed to have spent two hours reviewing the document, which was drafted by agency attorney Samuel Acosta at the request of then-acting Secretary Robert Méndez. Quiles emphasized that he followed the proper procedures and rejected accusations of attempting to protect the governor’s in-laws.
“Some people have tried to suggest that I signed this Administrative Order to favor private individuals, questioning my motives and attacking my integrity, ability, and honesty,” he said. “For the record, this Administrative Order is intended to partially implement Senate Bill No. 1621, which received bipartisan approval. Some senators present even voted in favor of it, and it was approved by the Legislative Assembly before being sent to the former governor for his signature.”
Quiles argued that the accusations against him are unfounded, saying that his actions are solely meant to address a longstanding institutional effort to tackle an environmental emergency that has been stagnant due to a lack of decisive action. With over 20 years of military experience, he said, he is accustomed to taking prompt and concrete actions. Accordingly, he reviewed the relevant files and documents, and, guided by his training, made swift and decisive decisions to overcome inertia.
5. Illegal construction
6. Impacts on wetlands
The designated environmental secretary noted that Administrative Order 2025-01 establishes stricter controls over activities in the area, with several key objectives: to halt construction outside designated areas and prohibit new construction.
For decades, various secretaries have discussed the necessity of imposing order in La Parguera and have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in efforts that yielded little benefit to the area’s natural resources.
“However, under our administration, for the first time, we have taken decisive actions to curb illegal construction and other activities threatening the ecological integrity of the area,” Quiles said. “In fact, this is the first time that vendors will be required to pay for the use of public domain property.”
The five-year concession period for vendors, along with the specification of occupied areas and the initial controls implemented, will provide the time needed to develop a management plan, he added. The La Parguera Management Plan will be based on the best available scientific information and will involve a participatory process that includes collaboration from local communities, scientists and experts in the field, the official said. It will receive funding from federal resources allocated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration specifically for the conservation efforts, he said.
“This funding will enable us to undertake sustainable and effective actions to preserve the area’s natural resources,” Quiles said.
He went on to note that Administrative Order 202501 will help in the following areas:
1. Control of Unauthorized Tourist Operations: Enhanced measures will be implemented to prevent tourism companies from operating without the necessary permits in accordance with Regulation 8013 (Regulation for the Administration of Exploitation by Authorization and Concession in Natural Protected Areas).
Quiles then discussed the historical challenges facing La Parguera, which has been subjected to anthropogenic activities adversely affecting its natural resources. Some of the ongoing issues include:
1. Illegal tour operators
2. Illegal fishing
3. Unauthorized marine events
4. Indiscriminate cutting of mangroves
2. Eradication of Illegal Fishing and Overfishing: Surveillance strategies will be intensified by DNER rangers to reduce poaching activities that threaten marine resources and overfished species (pursuant to Act No. 278 of Nov. 29, 1998, as amended, known as the Puerto Rico Fisheries Act).
3. Prevention of Pollutant Discharges: Efforts will be made to identify sources of pollutant discharges to help outline an intervention plan aimed at preventing pollution.
Outgoing PDP president says many in party betrayed him
By THE STAR STAFF
The outgoing president of the Popular Democratic Party (PDP),
Jesús Manuel Ortiz González, said Tuesday that he feels betrayed by individuals within the party and in other sectors, following his decision to resign effective Feb. 2.
“I feel betrayed by many people, not only in relation to myself but also concerning the party as a whole,” Ortiz stated during a radio interview on Radio Isla 1320. “I believe they have done a disservice to the country.”
During his 20-month presidency, Ortiz faced both internal and external opposition that he described as “unnecessary and vicious,” highlighting instances ranging from critical opinion
columns to threats of not voting for his candidacy. He believes the situation ultimately benefited the now-governing New Progressive Party (NPP).
Ortiz asserted that the environment created confusion among voters, which contributed to an electoral victory for the NPP. He contends that the outcome of last November’s elections now ensures the NPP control over the island Supreme Court and key appointments for the coming decades.
While Ortiz emphasized the importance of keeping communication open with other groups, he cautioned that no one should expect to assume an “unshakable leading role.” He reiterated that the structure of the PDP is the strongest option for defeating the NPP in upcoming elections.
Fundraising night for sea turtle protection slated for Feb. 18
By THE STAR STAFF
Siete Quillas Grupo Tortuguero San Juan are leading a community fundraising effort next month to protect leatherback turtles nesting in Puerta de Tierra, Condado and Ocean Park up to the Último Trolley.
With the objective of sharing the progress made in the protection of the endangered leatherback, the largest marine turtle in the world, the group is inviting the community to join in the celebration of the closing of the 2024 nesting season and the beginning of the arrival of the leatherbacks, from February to July of this year.
“Last year, we were visited by five leatherbacks that left 12 nests between Condado and Ocean Park, each with 60 to 100 eggs. Thanks to the protection of these nests and the beach, some 500 baby turtles were released and accompanied on their way to the sea,” said Hilda Benítez, founder and executive director of Siete Quillas. “It will take more than a decade for at least one of these baby turtles to return to our coast to nest on the beach where it was born.”
To commemorate the achievements, as well as to express gratitude to the volunteers, sponsors and the community in general, “we will meet Tuesday, February 18, from 6 p.m., in the beautiful surroundings of La Concha hotel in Condado, a space that has become a great ally for the protection of the species and that has access to one of the nesting beaches,” Benítez said.
“My call is to companies to join as sponsors of the event and to all people who want to enjoy a magical evening for a suggested donation of $75,” she added. “The money raised will help us cover the costs of purchasing equipment and supplies for night patrols, coastal cleanups, talks and volunteer training.”
More information can be obtained by writing an email to: sietequillas@gmail.com.
“It will be an unforgettable vigil that will permit us to share and raise funds to continue our work of protecting these marine turtles, which now come swimming from far away to deposit their eggs on our beach,” Benítez said. “This stage is crucial in the lives of the leatherbacks and if we have luck we will be able to see them that night.”
Thanks to a volunteer effort to protect their nests and the beach, “some 500 baby turtles were released and accompanied on their way to the sea,” said Hilda Benítez, founder and executive director of Siete Quillas Grupo Tortuguero San Juan.
Daddy Yankee rejects request for judicial administrator in legal dispute
By THE STAR STAFF
The legal representative of Raymond Ayala Rodríguez, known as Daddy Yankee, said Tuesday that a request filed by Mireddys González and Ayeisha González for a judicial administrator for the singer-rapper’s companies, in the middle of a lawsuit over the presumed non-compliance with a ruling, was “unactionable.”
“The solicitation of the defendants lacks judicial standing; it denotes a frivolous foundation before this
Court,” said Carlos Díaz Olivo, a lawyer for the plaintiff, in a written statement.
Ayala Rodríguez’s defense attorney said the petition seeks to “cover up the repeated non-compliance of the petitioners with the orders of the Court and amounts to show-boating strategy” to discredit the artist.
The court, under the supervision of Judge Anthony Cuevas, has already issued a final and firm judgment, and the only pending matter is a motion of contempt against Mireddys and Ayeisha González.
Ayala Rodríguez’s legal defense suggests that the
litigation in the media seeks to divert attention from what it said is the defendants’ losing cause in court.
Ayala Rodríguez emphasized his commitment to manage his companies according to the legal provisions and gave assurances that he will take the necessary measures to clarify any irregularities in their previous administration.
The motion filed by Mireddys González and Ayeisha González seeks to protect the assets of the companies, guarantee transparency and evaluate a possible corporate dissolution.
New Ciales mayor revives plan for cultural center in historic building
By THE STAR STAFF
The new mayor of Ciales, Jesús Resto Rivera, who was sworn in last Friday, announced that as part of his cultural and economic development initiatives he signed an agreement with the legal entity Pleneros de la Cresta and the cultural group Acción Valerosa, in order to give new life to a historic building next to City Hall so that it can be properly enabled to open its doors as the Yerba Bruja Cultural Center.
“As we promised the people of Cialeño, we have come to work for everyone, focused on initiatives for economic and cultural development,” the mayor said. “The old Casino Español, opened in 1914, and later home to various businesses such as the Asturian Maximino Fernández hardware store, and later the jewelry and furniture store of Wincho Rodríguez, will open its doors for new projects and attractions.”
The building is currently part of the municipal heritage of the central mountain town.
Resto pointed out that the cultural entity initiative had been presented to the previous administration on July
10, 2023, and although it was approved by the municipal legislature that same year, with the support of 10 private entities and the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture (ICP), the process stalled for no apparent reason.
“This new administration came to open doors,” he said. “We already knew about the case and I gave instructions to the legal team to take action in an expeditious and responsible manner. And we have already signed the agreement.”
While the building is being fitted out, the Yerba Bruja Cultural Center will operate from the Adalberto Santiago municipal theater in accordance with the proposal submitted by the theater and approved by the municipality.
Joseph Ocasio Rivera, the town’s cultural manager, said the cultural center, now and in its eventual permanent home, “will be a place of creativity, learning and encounter.”
“Here children, young people and adults will come to share, learn and contribute,” he said. “It will benefit Ciales, but also all Puerto Ricans who come to our community in search of culture.”
Los Pleneros de la Cresta began their work in 2015, as an important vindication for the island’s native plena musical genre. A group of young people brought plena back to its acoustic format, with the traditional tempo, lyrics committed to the political and social reality of Puerto Rico.
Mountain bikers say Cabo Rojo development blocks access to cycling areas
By THE STAR STAFF
Mountain bike enthusiasts expressed their concerns on Tuesday about a proposed development in Cabo Rojo that is blocking access to an area commonly used for cycling.
“Cabo Rojo is the capital of mountain biking, and during the weekends, thousands of cyclists come together to enjoy the trails in the area where the Esencia project is proposed. This has a significant economic impact on the local economy,” activist Guarionex Padilla Martí said in a Radio Isla report. “It is very worrying that these access points, which have served as pathways for cycling and hiking for many years, are being closed. The Esencia project has been promoted as one that guarantees access to the maritime-terrestrial zone and is environmentally friendly. However, this behavior indicates the opposite.”
The project, led by British investors Simon and David Reuben, requires an estimated investment of $2 billion for
2,000 acres of coastal land and is expected to generate more than 2,000 jobs during its operational phase. The luxury development is projected to be completed in seven to 10 years. Puerto Rican architectural firm Álvarez-Díaz & Villalón, whose partners Cristina Villalón and Ricardo Álvarez Díaz were notable contributors to Gov. Jenniffer González Colón’s recent campaign, has been hired for the project.
Environmental activists have voiced concerns over the development’s location near the maritime land zone in the Punta de Melones and Laguna Rincón sectors.
“We received an alert about a structure observed from the sea, and when we arrived, we found security guards monitoring the entrance of the site that is under construction. They were preventing access to cyclists and anyone else,” attorney Francisco Vargas said. “We have witnessed developers claim they would keep roads open and maintain access for cyclists, yet they currently lack a single permit and are restricting access to roads and areas frequently used by hikers and cyclists.”
Three Rules Capital, the developer of Esencia, and Ana G. Méndez University signed a collaborative agreement on Jan. 14 regarding the hospitality, tourism
and culinary arts curriculum at the Cabo Rojo campus. Padilla Martí noted that the municipality has conditionally endorsed the project due to concerns about access to beaches and drinking water usage.
“We already face issues with drinking water, especially on weekends when hundreds of thousands of people visit the Combate area,” he said. “Esencia is not just a hotel complex with tourist and residential features; it also includes a golf course in its plans, which would lead to additional consumption of water that we do not have.”

Trump’s executive orders: Reversing Biden’s policies and attacking the ‘deep state’
By ZOLAN KANNO-YOUNGS, MICHAEL D. SHEAR and NOAH WEILAND
President Donald Trump earlier this week issued a barrage of executive orders, kicking off his presidency with a muscular use of power intended to signal a sharp reversal from existing policies on issues including immigration, the environment and diversity initiatives.
The flurry of executive actions was an effort to roll back many of President Joe Biden’s most significant domestic policies, primarily on climate and immigration, while also reimposing a Trump agenda that would launch drilling and mining on natural resources and fundamentally upend the United States’ global role as a sanctuary for refugees and immigrants.
In a speech Monday evening, Trump said he was also revoking almost 80 “disruptive, radical executive actions of the previous administration.”
Among those revoked Biden orders were directives that the federal government rebuild the refugee program, and gradually end the Justice Department’s use of private prisons.
Some of Trump’s orders are almost certain to be challenged in court, and others will be largely symbolic. But taken together, they represent his intention to sharply turn away from the direction of the Biden administration, and to make good on his campaign promises to break what he and his aides cast as a “deep state” effort to thwart his agenda.
Here are some of the orders Trump signed on his first day in office: Federal workforce
— Freeze federal hiring, except for members of the military or “positions related to immigration enforcement, national security, or public safety.”
— Restore a category of federal workers known as Schedule F, which would lack the same job protections enjoyed by career civil servants.
— Halt new federal rules from going into effect before Trump administration appointees can review them.
— Review the investigative actions of the Biden administration, “to correct past misconduct by the federal government related to the weaponization of law enforcement and the weaponization of the intelligence community.”
— Grant top secret security clearances to White House staff without going through traditional vetting procedures.
powers to suspend certain environmental rules or expedite permitting of certain mining projects.
— Attempt to reverse Biden’s ban on offshore drilling for 625 million acres of federal waters.
— Begin the repeal of Biden-era regulations on tailpipe pollution from cars and light trucks, which have encouraged automakers to manufacture more electric vehicles.
— Roll back energy-efficiency regulations for dishwashers, shower heads and gas stoves.
— Open the Alaska wilderness to more oil and gas drilling.
— Restart reviews of new export terminals for liquefied natural gas, something the Biden administration had paused.
— Halt the leasing of federal waters for offshore wind farms.
— Eliminate environmental justice programs across the government, which are aimed at protecting poor communities from excess pollution.
— End remote work policies and order federal workers back to the office full time.
Immigration and the border
— Bar asylum for people newly arriving at the southern border.
— Move to end birthright citizenship, which is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment, for the children of immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally. The president cannot change the Constitution on his own, so it is not yet clear how Trump plans to withhold the benefits of citizenship to a group of people born in the United States. Any move is all but certain to be challenged in court.
— Suspend the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program “until such time as the further entry into the United States of refugees aligns with the interests of the United States.”
— Declare migrant crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border to be a national emergency, allowing Trump to unilaterally unlock federal funding for border wall construction, without approval from Congress, for stricter enforcement efforts.
— Resume a policy requiring people seeking asylum to wait in Mexico while an immigration judge considers their cases.
— Consider designating cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations.”
Gender and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives
— Terminate DEI programs across the federal government.
— Recognize two sexes: male and female.
— Remove protections for transgender people in federal prisons.
Tariffs and trade
— Direct federal agencies to begin an investigation into trade practices, including persistent trade deficits and unfair currency practices, as well as examine flows of migrants and drugs from Canada, China and Mexico to the United States.
— Assess China’s compliance with a trade deal Trump signed in 2020, as well as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which Trump signed in 2020 to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.
— Order the government to assess the feasibility of creating an “External Revenue Service” to collect tariffs and duties.
— Carry out a full review of the U.S. industrial and manufacturing base to assess whether further national security-related tariffs are warranted.
Energy and the environment
— Withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, the pact among almost all nations to fight climate change.
— Declare a national energy emergency, a first in U.S. history, which could unlock new
— Review all federal regulations that impose an “undue burden” on the development or use of a variety of energy sources, particularly coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear power, hydropower and biofuels.
TikTok ban
— Consult federal agencies on any national security risks posed by the social media platform, then “pursue a resolution that protects national security while saving a platform used by 170 million Americans.” Trump ordered his attorney general not to enforce a law that banned the site for 75 days to give the Trump administration “an opportunity to determine the appropriate course forward.”
Other
— Withdraw from the World Health Organization.
— Rename Mount Denali and the Gulf of Mexico.
— Ensure that states carrying out the death penalty have a “sufficient supply” of lethal injection drugs.
— Fly the American flag at full staff on Monday and on future Inauguration Days.
— Implement the Department of Government Efficiency, the Elon Musk-led cost-cutting initiative.
— Revoke security clearances for 51 signers of a letter suggesting that the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop could be Russian disinformation.
Trump grants sweeping clemency to all Jan. 6 rioters
By ALAN FEUER
President Donald Trump, in one of his first official acts, issued a sweeping grant of clemency on Monday to all of the nearly 1,600 people charged in connection with the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, issuing pardons to most of the defendants and commuting the sentences of 14 members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers militia, most of whom were convicted of seditious conspiracy.
Trump’s moves amounted to an extraordinary reversal for rioters accused of both low-level, nonviolent offenses and for those who had assaulted police officers.
And they effectively erased years of efforts by federal investigators to seek accountability for the mob assault on the peaceful transfer of presidential power after Trump’s loss in the 2020 election. As part of his pardon order, Trump also directed the Justice Department to dismiss “all pending indictments” that remained against people facing charges for Jan. 6.
Sitting in the Oval Office, Trump said he hoped that many of the defendants could be released from prison as early as Monday night.
“They’ve already been in jail for a long time,” he said. “These people have been destroyed.”
Enrique Tarrio, leader of the far-right group the Proud Boys, during a protest in Washington on Dec. 12, 2020. President Donald Trump, in one of his first official acts, said he had issued sweeping pardons to nearly all of the 1,600 rioters charged with storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and commuted the sentences of six others.
(Victor J. Blue/The New York Times)
The pardons Trump issued — “full, complete and unconditional,” he wrote — will touch the lives of about 1,000 defendants accused of misdemeanors like disorderly conduct, breaching the Capitol’s restricted grounds and trespassing at the building. Many of these rioters have served only days, weeks or months in prison — if any time at all.
The pardons will also wipe the slate clean for violent offenders who went after the police on Jan. 6 with baseball bats, two-by-fours and bear spray and are serving prison terms, in some cases of more than a decade.
Moreover, Trump pardoned Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the Proud Boys, who was serving a 22-year prison term after being convicted at trial of seditious conspiracy — a crime that requires prosecutors to prove that a defendant used violent force against the government.
A representative for Tarrio said he had been released from a federal prison in Louisiana and was expected to return to Miami, his hometown, by Tuesday afternoon.

Trump’s actions drew an immediate firestorm of criticism, not least from some of the investigators who had worked on Jan. 6 cases.
“These pardons suggest that if you commit acts of violence, as long as you do so on behalf of a politically powerful person you may be able to escape consequences,” said Alexis Loeb, a former federal prosecutor who personally supervised many riot cases. “They undermine — and are a blow to — the sacrifice of all the officers who put themselves in the face of harm to protect democracy on Jan. 6.”
In a separate move, Trump commuted the prison sentences of five other Proud Boys, some of whom had been convicted at trial with Tarrio. He also commuted the sentences of Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the Oath Keepers militia, and eight of his subordinates.
Altogether, the commutations erased more than 100 years of prison time for the 14 defendants, almost all of whom were convicted of seditious conspiracy.
The twin acts of clemency were greeted with jubilation by several Jan. 6 defendants, their families and the activists who had worked on their behalf, seeking to push Trump toward issuing the broadest version possible. Many Jan. 6 rioters had been riding high ever since Trump won the election in November, convinced that he would come to their aid and pardon everyone involved in the attack.
Trump’s actions were in essence his boldest moves yet in seeking to recast his supporters — and himself — as the victims, not the perpetrators, of Jan. 6. By granting clemency to the members of a mob that used physical violence to stop the democratic process in its tracks, Trump gave the imprimatur of the presidency to the rioters’ claims that they were not properly prosecuted criminal defendants, but rather unfairly persecuted
political prisoners.
As a legal matter, the pardons and commutations effectively unwound the largest single criminal inquiry the Justice Department has undertaken in its 155-year history. They wiped away all of the charges that had already been brought and the sentences already handed down while also stopping any news cases from moving forward.
Starting virtually from the moment the Capitol was breached, investigators spent more than four years obtaining warrants for thousands of cellphones and Google accounts, scrolling through tens of thousands of hours of police body-camera and surveillance camera footage, and running down hundreds of thousands of tips from ordinary citizens. Their work resulted in charges being brought in U.S. District Court in Washington — just blocks from the Capitol itself — against almost 1,600 people. More than 600 of those defendants were accused of assaulting or impeding law enforcement officers, many with weapons that included hockey sticks, firecrackers, crutches and broken wooden table legs.
More than half of the nearly 1,100 people who have been sentenced for their crimes were sentenced to at least some time in jail. Tarrio received the longest prison term of any defendant. He was followed closely by a Proud Boys member from California, David Dempsey, who had attacked the police with his hands, his feet, a flagpole, pepper spray and other weapons and was sent to prison for 20 years.
Both of those sentences will now be erased, along with others for far-right leaders like Rhodes, the Oath Keepers founder, who was serving an 18-year prison term when the commutations were issued.
Trump appears to have decided to grant an expansive form of clemency relatively recently and after a debate among his advisers. In recent months, he has said different things to different people about how he planned to proceed, sometimes suggesting he would grant pardons to violent offenders, sometimes indicating that they would be reserved for those who did not act violently and were only charged with misdemeanors.
A few weeks ago, Vice President JD Vance said on Fox News that rioters who had assaulted the police would most likely not get pardons.
“If you committed violence on that day, obviously you shouldn’t be pardoned,” Vance said, but added that “there’s a little bit of a gray area there.”
Vance’s comments elicited almost immediate outrage among many of the rioters.
“J6 defendants are very angry at JD Vance,” Philip Anderson, who was accused of taking part in a violent scrum in a tunnel outside the Capitol, wrote on social media. “All J6 defendants need to be saved.”
Vance quickly tried to walk back his remarks.
“I assure you, we care about people unjustly locked up,” he wrote on the social platform X. “Yes, that includes people provoked and it includes people who got a garbage trial.”
Trump signs executive order in attempt to stall TikTok ban
By DAVID McCABE
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday to delay enforcing a federal ban of TikTok for 75 days, even though the law took effect Sunday and it is unclear that such a move could override it.
The order, one of Trump’s first acts after taking office, instructs the attorney general not to take any action to enforce the law so that his administration has “an opportunity to determine the appropriate course forward.” The order is retroactive to Sunday.
As he signed the order, Trump told reporters that “the U.S. should be entitled to get half of TikTok” if a deal for the app is reached, without going into detail. He said he thought TikTok could be worth $1 trillion.
The order could immediately face legal challenges, including over whether a president has the power to halt enforcement of a federal law. Companies subject to the law, which forbids providing services to Chinese-owned TikTok, may determine that the order does not provide a shield from legal liability.
The federal law banning TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance, mandated that the app needed to be sold to a non-Chinese owner or it would be blocked. The only workaround provided by the law is a 90-day extension if a likely buyer is found. Even then, it is unclear if that option is viable, given that the law is already in effect. The law also restricts how much of a TikTok stake can remain under foreign ownership.
By seeking to override the federal law, Trump raised serious questions about the limits of presidential power and the rule of law in the United States. Some lawmakers and legal experts have expressed concerns about the legality of an executive order, particularly in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling that upheld the law Friday and the national security concerns that prompted legislators to draft it in the first place.
Former President Joe Biden had signed the law, which passed overwhelmingly in Congress last year, forcing ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban. TikTok had faced security concerns that the Chinese government could use it to spread propaganda or collect U.S. user data. The law levies financial penalties on app stores and cloud computing providers unless they stop working with the app.
TikTok briefly went dark for U.S. users over the weekend, but returned Sunday following Trump’s social media announcement that he was planning an executive order. While the app was working again for people who have already downloaded it, it vanished from Google’s and Apple’s app stores Saturday and remained unavailable Monday.
Trump’s efforts to keep TikTok online have major implications for its users. The app has reshaped the social media landscape, defined popular culture and created a living for millions of influencers and small businesses that rely on the platform.
In the executive order, Trump said that his constitutional responsibilities include national security. It says he wants to
consult with advisers to review the concerns posed by TikTok and the mitigation measures the company has taken already.
The administration will “pursue a resolution that protects national security while saving a platform used by 170 million Americans,” according to the order, which called the law’s timing “unfortunate.”
The attorney general will send letters to companies covered by the law to tell them “that there has been no violation of the statute” and they won’t be held liable for providing services to TikTok during the 75 days, the order said.
That might not be enough reassurance, some legal experts said.
“I don’t think it’s consistent with faithful execution of the law to direct the attorney general not to enforce it for a determinate period,” said Zachary Price, a professor at the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco. “And even if that’s OK, the president doesn’t have the authority to eliminate the law itself and remove liability for the

people who violate it while it’s not being enforced.”
TikTok and Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Google declined to comment.
TikTok’s ties to China have long raised national security concerns, including with Trump. Near the end of his first term in 2020, Trump issued an executive order that would bar app stores from making TikTok available for download. He then pushed for an American company to buy the app, but those efforts fizzled when he lost reelection.
Last year, the effort was revived by Congress and Biden signed it into law in April. The law targeted app stores, like those run by Apple and Google, and cloud computing companies. It said those companies could not distribute or host TikTok unless the app was sold to a non-Chinese owner by Jan. 19.
Trump then reversed positions. He joined the app in June and said on television in March that there are young people who would go “crazy” without TikTok.
“I guess I have a warm spot for TikTok that I didn’t have originally,” Trump said as he signed executive orders Monday evening.
TikTok challenged the law in federal court, saying it impeded its users’ rights to freedom of speech as well as the company’s own First Amendment rights. The Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit upheld the law in December. TikTok appealed to the Supreme Court, which on Friday also upheld the law.
TikTok and some Democrats made a last-ditch effort to stop the law from taking effect. But on Saturday, TikTok stopped operating in the United States and disappeared from Apple and Google’s app stores a few hours before midnight. Users grieved its disappearance.
On Sunday morning, Trump announced on Truth Social that he would “issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect, so that we can make a deal to protect our national security.” He said he would not punish companies that had violated the law to keep the app online.
Hours later TikTok restored its service to U.S. users and welcomed them back with a message: “As a result of President Trump’s efforts, TikTok is back in the U.S.!”
As he signed executive orders in the Oval Office, Trump was asked why he had changed his mind about the app.
“Because I got to use it,” he said.

Wall Street advances with focus on new US administration’s
Wall Street’s main indexes rose on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 and the Dow hitting their highest in more than a month, as investors assessed Donald Trump’s first actions as U.S. president and breathed relief that he did not start his second term with blanket tariff increases.
Trump did not lay out any concrete plans on the universal tariffs and additional surcharges on close trade partners as previously promised, but said he was thinking about imposing duties on Canadian and Mexican goods as early as Feb. 1.
While investors remain cautious about tariffs and the potential for a global trade war pushing inflation higher, brokerage Goldman Sachs lowered its forecast for the chances of a universal tariff this year to 25% from about 40% seen in December.
“There was a definite relief and a bit of surprise that tariffs weren’t called out in the first round of executive actions that happened yesterday,” said Carol Schleif, chief market strategist at BMO Private Wealth. “Markets are leaping to the conclusion, probably rightfully so, that the administration will take a more nuanced approach.”
Investors hope the new administration will use the threat of tariffs as a negotiating tactic and take “a scalpel and not a sledgehammer to tariffs,” Schleif said.

Facing setbacks and desertions at the front, Ukraine detains commanders
By MARIA VARENIKOVA
Facing growing public pressure to address concerns over military leadership on the front as Ukrainian forces lose ground daily to Russian attacks, Ukraine said it had detained three former commanders that it blamed for the loss of territory last spring.
Ukraine’s security service said late Monday that the three former commanders — two generals and a colonel — had been accused of failing to protect the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine from the advance of Russian forces last year.
The security service, known as the SBU, did not name those detained, giving only their ranks and the units they commanded at the time.
The former commanders are accused of failing to build adequate fortifications or to properly equip defensive positions, along with other mistakes that “led to the seizure of part of the territory of the eastern region of Ukraine, where fierce fighting is currently ongoing,” the security service said in a statement.
The arrests come amid growing public pressure for action against commanders seen as incompetent or careless as desertions rise in the Ukrainian army. Soldiers who leave their units without permission often cite disagreement with their

commanders as their main reason for doing so.
The colonel was also being held responsible for 12 soldiers in his battalion leaving their positions, a statement said. Separately, the commander of another brigade, the 155th, was
At least 76 are killed in fire at ski resort in Turkey
By BEN HUBBARD and SAFAK TIMUR
Afire blazed through a 12-story hotel at a ski resort in Turkey on Tuesday, killing at least 76 people and injuring 51 others, authorities said, turning an idyllic vacation spot into a smoke-filled nightmare.
The disaster struck during Turkey’s winter holiday, when children are out of school and many families go on vacation, including to ski resorts. It was not clear how many children were among the dead, but a number were reported by acquaintances.
The cause of the fire was unclear.
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said on social media that six prosecutors had been assigned to investigate the blaze. Nine people, including the hotel’s owner, had been detained.
The fire broke out before dawn in the Grand Kartal Hotel in Kartalkaya, 180 miles east of Istanbul, sending large flames from the windows and thick smoke billowing from the roof.
About 230 guests were believed to be in the hotel at the time, in addition to a number of employees. Some survivors told Turkish news media of terrifying escapes, exacerbated by a lack of fire alarms or clear fire escapes.
“The smoke was so intense that we could hardly breathe,” Eylem Senturk, who was vacationing at the hotel with her family, told the state-run Anadolu news agency.
She and her daughter raced downstairs to an exit, but
the smoke was too intense for her husband, she said, so he jumped from a window onto a lower rooftop and then onto a car to reach the ground.
Senturk said she had not heard a fire alarm, but realized that the building was burning when she heard people shouting in the hallway and opened the door to see smoke. She did not see any fire escapes, she said.
“If there had been a fire alarm, we could have been faster,” she said. “The lack of a fire alarm and fire escape trapped people.”
Another survivor, Muzaffer Cig, also told Anadolu that there was no fire escape. “As there was no fire escape, we ran down the staircase,” he said.
Speaking to reporters at the scene, Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said the hotel had been inspected in 2021 and 2024 and was found to have the necessary fire precautions. He also said the building had two fire escapes.
But no external escapes are visible in aerial footage of the building broadcast on Turkish television after the fire.
Fifty-two of the victims have been identified, and 14 were sent to a forensic medicine unit for further DNA testing, officials said. The bodies of 45 people were turned over to their families.
Turkey declared a day of national mourning.
The dozens of deaths in a building surrounded by snow-capped peaks where families had gone expecting good times prompted calls for accountability, but such calls after
arrested and charged with actions that led to large numbers of members of his brigade going absent without leave at a time when Ukraine’s military is badly lacking people.
Ukraine has also been targeting corruption in the military amid widespread accounts of bribetaking by military officials — particularly medical commissioners who can issue draft exemptions.
On Tuesday, the SBU announced that the country’s chief military psychiatrist had been arrested, saying that he had amassed more than $1 million since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, acquiring several properties and four BMWs.
The crimes for which the commanders have been accused can carry prison sentences of up to 10 years. The SBU said it would seek to place those arrested in pretrial detention as a preventive measure.
Soldiers from the 125th brigade, which was involved in the defense of the Kharkiv region at the time, said that their former commander was one of those arrested, and reacted angrily.
“We were defending a huge swath of the border, we fought to the death in the first hours of the attack. We were short of people, ammunition and support but we fought, we fought under the leadership of our commander!” they wrote on the brigade’s Facebook page.
past disasters have not gone far.
After powerful earthquakes killed more than 50,000 people in southern Turkey in early 2023, survivors and engineers accused contractors and government inspectors of failing to ensure compliance with building codes, increasing the death toll. Nearly two years later, however, few people have been held accountable.
The fire Tuesday started around 3:30 a.m., when most hotel occupants were asleep, according to news reports. In an effort to evacuate, some strung bedsheets together to make a rope that they used to descend to a lower floor, video footage showed.
Dozens of rescuers and fire trucks rushed to the site from surrounding towns.
“When I left my room, I saw the flames at the fourth floor, the floor of the restaurant,” Necmi Kepcetutan, a ski instructor who also worked at the hotel, told the NTV network. “Then it started to swarm the hotel. We helped around a dozen or more people to evacuate, since we know the hotel very well.”
“People were screaming to be rescued,” he said. Two people — a guest and a hotel employee — died after jumping from the building, the area’s governor, Abdulaziz Aydin, told Anadolu.
The fire took place on the same day that an explosion injured four people at another Turkish ski resort, in the central province of Sivas, its governor’s office said in a statement.
The reason for the explosion was unclear. Two skiers and a trainer were lightly injured, while another trainer had second-degree burns on the hands and face, the statement said.
At least 80 dead and 18,000 flee amid a new surge of violence in Colombia
By JULIE TURKEWITZ
At least 80 people are dead and more than 18,000 have been forced to flee their homes in Colombia, officials say, amid fierce clashes between two rival armed groups on the border with Venezuela.
The violence, carried out over the past four days in a northeast region called Catatumbo, is some of the worst the country has suffered through in recent years. And it has raised concerns that the country is moving in the opposite direction of “total peace” — a goal made a priority by the country’s leftist president, Gustavo Petro, who is more than halfway through his four-year term.
The Colombian leader visited the region Friday, writing on social platform X that his government “stands with the people of Catatumbo.” He has also sent troops and humanitarian assistance.
Displaced families are taking refuge in a stadium in Cúcuta, a border town better known in recent years for receiving Venezuelan migrants. In some places, Colombians are fleeing into Venezuela — home to its own humanitarian crisis — and the Venezuelan autocratic leader there, Nicolás Maduro, has promised to send them aid.
The clashes in Catatumbo are a stark departure from the hope that swept across parts of Colombia less than a decade ago, when the country signed a peace deal with its largest rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
The nation had suffered through decades of internal conflict, with left-wing guerrilla groups, including the FARC; paramilitary organizations; and the government fighting for control of the country and for lucrative industries like narcotrafficking.
Thousands of FARC fighters laid down their arms in the 2016 agreement, and at the time it felt like a seismic moment for one of the world’s most violent countries. But old rebel groups, including the National Liberation Army, or ELN, persisted. At the same time, new ones emerged, all fighting for control of territory and industry left behind by the FARC.
In some cases, these new groups consist of former FARC fighters, and they have divided and subdivided, helping fuel an ever more complicated conflict.
Most of the violence has played out in rural parts of the country with many Colombians living in cities only dimly aware of the violence that has been unfolding not far from
dashing hopes of peace in Colombia. (Federico Rios/The New York Times)
their homes.
In the past, the FARC clung to a leftist ideology, fighting the government and seeking to topple and replace it. Today’s armed groups are more focused on fighting each other, battling over land and profits, with the military trying to contain them.
Catatumbo is home to vast fields of coca, the plant that is a base product in cocaine. Two groups control the territory, the ELN and a group of former FARC members called the 33rd Front, said Gen. Luis Emilio Cardozo, the head of the Colombian army, speaking to reporters over the weekend.
A precarious peace between the two groups broke down last week. Cardozo said there had been four or five clashes between the groups in recent days, and in other cases armed fighters were going door to door, targeting former FARC fighters they suspected of being part of the 33rd Front.
“It was a very well planned criminal operation,” he said, “they went with a list in hand looking for the people they wanted to kill.”
In a message posted on X on Sunday, the ELN called the 33rd Front the “only objective of our actions.”
But many victims, including those fleeing their homes, appeared to be civilians.
At the beginning of his presidency, Petro had said he could strike a peace deal with the various groups in a matter
of months. In recent days he suspended ongoing peace talks.
The ELN has thousands of members, according to the Colombian military, and its presence in the country grew from 149 municipalities in 2019, to 226 last year, according to Colombia’s ombudsman.
The group has also expanded into Venezuela in recent years, where its members are beyond the reach of the Colombian military and have found an ideological ally in Maduro.
Maduro in turn benefits from having another armed force as an ally.
With the military distracted, a separate conflict broke out in recent days between two former FARC groups in Guaviare, a department in the south-central part of Colombia, according to the country’s ombudsman’s office.
Organizations including the International Crisis Group have warned for years that the country’s security situation has deteriorated since 2016 and could erupt into violence at any moment.
“We are very concerned that moment is now,” said Elizabeth Dickinson, a Colombia-based analyst for the nonprofit organization. “Escalations on various front lines have taken the conflict to a very dangerous inflection point.”
Dickinson called the scale of conflict in Guaviare “very significant” and said it had the potential to spread across several departments in southern Colombia. She added that there are “many children” in the ranks of the armed groups in that region.
The clashes in Catatumbo, in the north, on the border with Venezuela, come amid growing tensions between Petro and Maduro, who continues to provide safe haven to members of the ELN.
Petro and Maduro call themselves leftists, and just two years ago, the two were shaking hands in Caracas and promising more productive relations.
But Petro has turned more critical of the autocrat in recent weeks, reprimanding him for locking up political opponents and refusing to release the results of a recent presidential vote that Maduro claimed to win. The United States and a broad spectrum of other nations say the vote was actually won by a top opposition leader.
Petro’s criticism has provoked the ire of Maduro, who is increasingly isolated on the global stage, even from former allies like Colombia and Brazil, and is looking for ways to strike back at those who spurn him.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said last year that it was tracking eight armed conflicts inside Colombia.

Trump’s pardons will encourage more political violence
By THE EDITORIAL BOARD
On Jan. 6, 2021, Philip Sean Grillo, a former Republican district leader in Queens, jumped through a broken window at the U.S. Capitol with a megaphone. He pushed his way past a line of Capitol Police officers and opened the exterior doors of the Rotunda to allow other rioters to enter the building and trash it. “We stormed the Capitol!” he exulted on video, and was seen smoking marijuana and high-fiving other Donald Trump supporters who were fighting police. “We shut it down! We did it!”
Nearly three years later, a federal jury convicted Grillo of multiple offenses. But he did not lose heart: Last month, when he was sentenced to a year in prison, he had a special taunt for the federal district judge who sentenced him, Royce Lamberth.
“Trump’s going to pardon me anyways,” he yelled at the judge, just before he was handcuffed and led away.
He was right. On Monday evening, several hours after Trump was inaugurated, he fulfilled a promise he had repeatedly made to pardon nearly all the rioters who attacked and desecrated the Capitol in 2021 to prevent Joe Biden’s victory from being certified. Grillo and about 1,500 other rioters received full pardons from Trump, while 14 others received commuted sentences.
A presidential pardon for Grillo not only makes a mockery of his jury’s verdict and of Lamberth’s sentence. Trump’s mass pardon effectively makes a mockery of a justice system that has labored for four years to charge nearly 1,600 people who tried

to stop the Constitution in its tracks, a system that convicted 1,100 of them and that sentenced more than 600 of them to prison.
Most important, the mass pardon sends a message to the country and the world that violating the law in support of Trump and his movement will be rewarded, especially when considered alongside his previous pardons of his advisers. It loudly proclaims, from the nation’s highest office, that the rioters did nothing wrong, that violence is a perfectly legitimate form of political expression and that no price need be paid by those who seek to disrupt a sacred constitutional transfer of power.
sentiment in the early aftermath of the attack echoed even by senior Republicans, some of whom would go on to vote to impeach Trump for his role in instigating it.
The presidential pardon system is usually abused in modern times by departing presidents giving a final gift to cronies, donors or relatives, and those breaches of trust were bad enough. Biden issued dubious pardons to his son and, as he walked out the door, several other family members, as well as preemptive pardons to an array of current and former government officials for noncriminal actions, all to protect them from potential Republican retribution — an expansive use of pardon power that further warps its purpose.
But what Trump did Monday is of an entirely different scope. He used a mass pardon at the beginning of his term to write a false chapter of American history, to try to erase a crime committed against the foundations of American democracy.
To open his term with such an act of contempt toward the legal system is audacious, even for Trump, and should send an alarming signal to Democrats and Republicans alike. Members of both parties had to protect themselves that day from the mob, which made little distinction in political affiliation or ideology as they called for the execution of Vice President Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House. In this pardon, Trump forgave and thus provided encouragement for domestic terrorists who put members of Congress in danger of their lives; the long-term cost will be paid by the entire political system, not just his critics.
For four years, he has tried to stage-manage the erasure of his role in inspiring the assault. It was only hours after the attack that his allies in the House and on Fox News began sowing doubt about the motivation for the rioters, claiming it was organized by leftists masquerading as Trump supporters. By 2022, when he was under investigation by the House Jan. 6 committee, he began referring to the rioters as “political prisoners” persecuted by Democrats and openly suggesting that the FBI had helped stage the attack. By the time his presidential campaign was in full swing last year, he had completely transformed the day’s monstrous bloody fury into what he called a “day of love” and insisted falsely that none of his supporters had brought guns to the Capitol.
But Trump’s dense fog of misinformation can’t change what really happened on that terrible day, which, as The New York Times editorial board wrote at the time, “touched the darkest memories and fears of democracies the world over.” It was a
At least 20 people who joined the attack did carry firearms onto the Capitol grounds, including Christopher Alberts, who wore body armor containing metal plates and carried a 9 mm pistol loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition, along with a separate 12-round holster that included hollow-point bullets. He was sentenced to 84 months in prison after a jury convicted him of nine charges, including assaulting law enforcement officers, but received a full pardon Monday. More than 140 police officers were assaulted that day; Brian Sicknick, a Capitol Police officer, was killed, and other officers were smashed in the head with weapons; they were bruised, burned and lacerated; four later died by suicide.
“My concern is that people are going to believe that if they attack me or members of my family physically that Donald Trump will absolve them of their acts,” Michael Fanone, a former police officer attacked by the crowd Jan. 6, told the Times. “And who is to say he wouldn’t?”
For many of the officers who were pepper-sprayed or hit with two-by-fours or beaten that day, the thought that the nation’s chief executive would forgive such actions is despicable. “Releasing those who assaulted us from blame would be a desecration of justice,” Aquilino Gonell, a former Capitol Police sergeant who suffered lasting injuries in the riot, wrote in a Times Opinion guest essay this month. “If Mr. Trump wants to heal our divided nation, he’ll let their convictions stand.”
Lamberth, a senior federal judge appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the D.C. District Court, has been on the bench since 1987 and has seen it all, having served with the Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps in Vietnam and as a federal prosecutor in Washington during the 1970s. But in pronouncing one sentence against a rioter last January, he said he had never seen such a level of “meritless justifications of criminal activity” in the political mainstream.
“I have been dismayed to see distortions and outright falsehoods seep into the public consciousness,” he wrote. “I have been shocked to watch some public figures try to rewrite history, claiming rioters behaved ‘in an orderly fashion’ like ordinary tourists or martyrizing convicted Jan. 6 defendants as ‘political prisoners’ or even, incredibly, ‘hostages.’ That is all preposterous. But the court fears that such destructive, misguided rhetoric could presage further danger to our country.”
On his first day back in public office, Trump provoked the danger that the judge dreads, setting loose hundreds of people found guilty of participating in a violent assault on the nation’s Capitol — not because they committed no crimes but because they committed their crimes in his name. In doing so, he invites such crimes to happen again.

5 science fiction movies to stream now
By ELISABETH VINCENTELLI
In this month’s sci-fi picks, what’s worse? Coming face-to-face with the apocalypse or with our older selves?
‘Year 10’
Ben Goodger’s film starts by informing us that we are a decade into the end of humanity (hence the title) and the few survivors left are resorting to cannibalism. Talk about misleading: The consumption of human flesh barely figures in the movie, which is a relief for those of us who semi-dreaded a postapocalyptic version of “Society of the Snow” or “Yellowjackets.”
The movie — which is entirely wordless — is still plenty oppressive, stifling. Goodger paints a bleak landscape in which peril is constant, survival constantly hangs by a thread and any noise can attract unwanted attention. The action centers on an unnamed young man (Toby Goodger), who is trying to locate medication necessary to keep a gravely ill young woman (Hannah KhaliqueBrown) alive. That is pretty much the extent of the script. What matters is mood, which “Year 10” sustains admirably, if gruelingly. It’s rare to see a film in which merely making it through the day feels so, so hard — and all for the privilege of spending more time in a hellscape. (Rent or buy it on most major platforms.)
‘My Old Ass’
At the beginning, “My Old Ass” appears to fall in a currently popular field: the liberated, feminist spin on coming-of-age comedy. Elliott (Maisy Stella) is turning 18 and everything is going her way. She finally lan-
ded the girl of her dreams and she’s having a fun last summer on a lake before leaving her family’s cranberry farm and heading to college.
As if this weren’t enough, Megan Park’s movie adds another popular element: the metaverse time scramble. After taking mushrooms with her besties (Kerrice Brooks and Maddie Ziegler), Elliott wakes up next to her 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza), who sternly warns her to stay away from a certain Chad (Percy Hynes White). Which is a problem since Elliott is falling for him. For the young woman, being in touch with her older self (the pair regularly talk on the phone, which allows for hints of a future world that doesn’t sound all that great) is less head-scratching than being in love with a man when she thought she was gay.
Under its raunchy exterior, “My Old Ass” ponders grave matters like free will and the weight of choices, whether it’s a good idea to know what awaits and accepting hardship. So that’s what was going on: Park set up all those familiar markers only to gently subvert them. (Stream it on Amazon Prime Video.)
‘Last Night on Earth’
Holly (Leven Rambin) and Ryan (Jake McLaughlin) are a hot couple enjoying the quiet of the Tennessee countryside in their sleek Airstream. But they’re not just chilling — they’re chilling before an asteroid wipes out the entire planet.
The premise of Marcos Efron’s film is not unlike that of Don McKellar’s similarly titled “Last Night” (1999), in which assorted Torontonians live out their final moments before the end of the world. The new movie’s vibe
is mellower, calmer — almost New Age at times — even though Efron awkwardly works in a pair of gun-toting menaces with a sinister agenda. “Last Night on Earth” is most effective engaging in quietly upsetting episodes, like a family deciding to radically anticipate the catastrophe or brief encounters with a pious woman (Dee Wallace, from such 1980s classics as “E.T. the Extraterrestrial” and “The Howling”). In the end, Efron seems to say, the only issue we are facing is: What do we want our death to be like? (Stream it on Tubi.)
‘Sky Peals’
When his manager (Steve Oram) calls Adam (Faraz Ayub) a “people person” and ask him to be a greeter, it feels like a practical joke. Adam is nice enough but withdrawn and taciturn. You can’t blame him for not jumping for joy during his shifts at a dreary fast-food joint attached to a no-less-dreary gas station but still, there is a deeper malaise going on. It comes to the fore when Adam learns that his recently deceased father (Jeff Mirza) thought he was “from somewhere else” — as in, not from Earth. What does that mean for Adam, who was already pulled between his paternal Pakistani side and his maternal white British side?
Moin Hussain’s film proceeds at a deliberate pace that creates a hypnotic sense of existential uncertainty. Adam (whom his Pakistani relatives call Umer) is stuck in limbo. He already had a bleak job in a weird liminal space and was unsure where he would live after his mother relocated. Now he also questions his very humanity. But is he an alien or merely alienated? The austere “Sky Peals” is
a worthy entry in a growing sci-fi subgenre that draws connections between aliens of the non-Earthling kind and aliens in the refugee/ imamigrant sense, but also questions the porous, moving borders of mental health. (Rent or buy it on most major platforms.)
‘Murphy’
While David (Prabhu Mundkur, who is also one of the writers) is tinkering with his grandfather’s radio, a storm hits and he hears a woman’s voice coming from the oldfashioned box. He realizes he can actually communicate with her, and the two engage in conversation. The woman, Janani (Roshini Prakash), coincidentally attends the same university as David, but the two don’t know each other, so they decide to meet up. They are both upset when the other doesn’t show up, but eventually they realize that they exist in different years: David is in 2024 and Janani is in 1996. (Aficionados of time-hopping romances will spot the same premise as in “Ditto,” a South Korean movie from 2000 that was remade under the same title in 2022, so ditto “Ditto.”)
Director B.S.P. Varma takes his sweet time getting the action going, but the Goaset “Murphy” is on firmer ground once David and Janani discover what they have in common — a professor named Joe (Mundkur again) plays a key role — and the story switches into a higher gear. The movie digs into the kind of paradoxes that emerge when you start messing with the past to alter the future, which, if you are still following, is the present. As we figure out the connection between David and Janani, which goes beyond airwaves, Varma unabashedly cranks up the romantic implications and the plot twist. And that feels just about right. (Rent or buy it on Amazon Prime Video, Google Play or YouTube.)
Debris rains from space after SpaceX’s Starship is lost in flight
By KENNETH CHANG
The seventh test flight of SpaceX’s Starship rocket failed late last week as the vehicle’s upper stage experienced a catastrophic malfunction as it headed upward to space. SpaceX was able to achieve some success by repeating the feat of catching the gargantuan Super Heavy booster back at the launchpad.
But then data indicated that some of the engines on an upgraded, longer version of the upper stage shut down prematurely. About 8.5 minutes after launch, communications between the ground and the upper-stage vehicle, which is known as Starship, were cut off.
“We can confirm that we did lose the ship,” said Kate Tice, one of the hosts of SpaceX’s video stream of the launch. Videos posted on the social platform X appeared to show debris raining down from the sky over the Caribbean, likely parts of a disintegrated rocket.
Starship is the rocket that Elon Musk, SpaceX’s founder, says will take people to Mars some day. NASA is also paying SpaceX to develop a version of the vehicle to return American astronauts to the moon.
In his own post on X, Musk shared video footage of the debris and wrote “Success is uncertain, but entertainment is guaranteed!”
The Federal Aviation Administration, the agency that regulates commercial spaceflight, said in a statement that it had “briefly slowed and diverted aircraft around the area where space vehicle debris was falling.”
Over the first six test flights, SpaceX has demonstrated that it can launch the largest rocket ever into space and more or less bring the pieces back to Earth intact. Over the coming year, the company is looking to turn “more or less” into “reliably” and prove out other capabilities. SpaceX has requested increasing the maximum allowed number of Starship launches per year from Starbase, its launch site in south Texas, to 25 from five.
Earlier test flights, while not perfect, showed steady progress from one to the next. This seventh flight was the first to not repeat all of the milestones that had been achieved on the previous flight.
The FAA had approved multiple launches of the current Starship configuration and not require investigations of certain failures that could occur during test flights.

However, because the rocket’s failure occurred during ascent, causing a shower of debris, the FAA could require SpaceX to investigate the cause before it allows the next Starship launch.
Liftoff occurred at 5:37 p.m. Eastern time.
After finishing its work pushing the rocket through the thickest part of the atmosphere, the booster dropped away and headed back toward the launchpad. It was then successfully caught by two mechanical arms on the launch tower.
Shortly after that, the trouble with the upper-stage spacecraft occurred, ending what was to have been a one-hour trip to splash down in the Indian Ocean.
In a post on X on Thursday evening, Musk said that a preliminary analysis indicated a leak of oxygen and fuel and that the problem could be quickly fixed.
“Apart from obviously double-checking for leaks, we will add fire suppression to that volume and probably increase vent area,” he wrote. “Nothing so far suggests pushing next launch past next month.”
What is Starship?
The Starship rocket system is the largest ever built — 403 feet tall, or nearly 100 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty including the pedestal.
And it has the most engines ever in a rocket booster: The Super Heavy booster — the bottom part of the rocket — has 33 of SpaceX’s powerful Raptor engines sticking out of its
bottom. As those engines lift Starship off the launchpad, they will generate 16 million pounds of thrust at full throttle.
The upper part, also called Starship or Ship for short, looks like a shiny rocket from a science fiction movie from the 1950s and is made of stainless steel with large fins. This is the upper stage that will head toward orbit, and ultimately could carry people to the moon or even Mars.
What happened during the previous flight?
President-elect Donald Trump attended the sixth test flight on Nov. 19, visiting Musk in the launch control room. The upper Starship flew on a suborbital trajectory halfway around the world, successfully reentered the atmosphere and performed a landing maneuver, flipping to a vertical position before gently splashing down in the Indian Ocean about an hour after liftoff.
Not unexpectedly, it then tipped over and exploded. The booster also successfully reentered the atmosphere. But plans to catch it using mechanical arms on the launch tower — a feat that SpaceX accomplished during the fifth test flight — were called off after sensors on the arms were damaged during launch. The booster was diverted to the Gulf of Mexico.
What’s different about the seventh flight?
For the Starship on this seventh test flight, significant design changes were made to the propulsion, the heat shield and the control systems. The rocket had been stretched several feet taller than earlier Starships — space for bigger tanks that hold 25% more propellant. The flaps near the top of Starship were smaller and had been moved toward the tip to reduce damage from the searing temperatures of reentry.
While in space, Starship was to test a new system that somewhat resembles a PEZ candy dispenser. It would have shot out 10 dummy satellites that were similar in size and shape to the next-generation spacecraft to be deployed for SpaceX’s Starlink internet service. The dummy satellites would have followed Starship’s trajectory and burn up in the atmosphere over the Indian Ocean.
When will Starship be able to send people to space?
The failure on Thursday will push back SpaceX’s ambitiously speedy development schedule.
Even before the failure, Starship was likely at least a couple of years away from being ready for crewed missions. NASA is planning to use a version of Starship to take astronauts from lunar orbit to the surface of the moon during its Artemis III mission, currently scheduled for 2027.
Jared Isaacman, the billionaire founder of the Shift4, a payment services company who has flown twice to space on SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets, was to take part on the first crewed flight of Starship. But now that he has been selected by Trump to be the next administrator of NASA, Isaacman is likely to stay on the ground, at least for now.

The simple trick to silky, juicy chicken breast
By KEVIN PANG
The chicken pieces in chef Elmo Han’s kung pao are so remarkably tender that when teeth meet meat, the poultry barely offers a fight. The dish he serves at Shanghai Terrace, a fine dining restaurant in the Peninsula Chicago Hotel, is a faithful interpretation of the classic, but noteworthy in that it includes chicken breast instead of thighs. White meat, in less capable hands, can quickly dry out and toughen into shoe leather.
Like many Chinese chefs, Han employs a simple method of marinating and flash-cooking that can make lean meat and seafood silky: It’s called velveting. Think of stir-fried broccoli beef, where the sauce enrobes rather than merely coats the meat. Velveting is the reason. Without it, “the sauce falls off the pieces, and it’ll taste bland,” Han said. “It helps the sauce cling onto the ingredients.”
In “Stir-Frying to the Sky’s Edge,” the definitive book on stir-frying, author Grace Young wrote, “No other cooking technique produces such light, delicate, tender succulence.” The process starts with marinating sliced meat and seafood in a protective coating of cornstarch, egg whites and seasonings. After the meat is blanched with a quick dip in hot oil or boiling water, the drained pieces are covered in a gel-like barrier, which yields an extra level of tenderness in the finished dish.
While chefs in restaurant kitchens opt for hot oil, the method works just as well with boiling water. Even cuts like chicken breast become supremely juicy when marinated and dunked in bubbling water. Velveting does the heavy lifting in this lightning-quick stir-fry, tenderizing the chicken before it’s tossed with vegetables in a savory sauce of butter, soy sauce and lemon.
There’s no one way to velvet. Most commonly, thinly sliced chicken breast, fish fillets or leaner cuts of beef and pork are combined with cornstarch, egg whites and a liquid marinade such as soy sauce. Vegetable oil is added if the meat will be blanched in boiling water. Some cooks add a small amount of baking soda, which acts as a meat tenderizer and slows muscle fibers from seizing up during cooking, and other seasonings.
The marinade is massaged into the meat, and according to Han, who grew up in Beijing and learned this technique at age 17, there must be a gentleness to the process. When preparing his kung pao, he spent two straight minutes working the marinade into the chicken, applying a soft and steady pressure with both hands.
At Shanghai Terrace, Han marinates the meat for several hours before he blanches it for no more than 90 seconds in a wok of hot oil. At home, blanching in boiling water has many advantages — namely that it’s healthier, not as messy and less dangerous. Whichever way it’s flashcooked, the meat is then strained and ready for stir-frying with other ingredients.
In a way, velveting is a safeguard measure. In professional Chinese kitchens, gas burners heat woks to such

high temperatures that it often resembles cooking over a jet engine. Velveting creates “a shell for whatever meat you’re marinating, a bubble to protect it, so the moisture can’t go out as easily,” said ArChan Chan, the chef of Hong Kong’s Ho Lee Fook, a contemporary Cantonese restaurant.
Andrew Wong, the chef of London’s two Michelinstarred A.Wong, said that even when velveted meats are cooked in hot oil, the effect is less frying than it is steaming.
He said velveting is about creating barriers, equally effective in stir-fried or steamed dishes. “Because you’re creating this thin surface over the protein, everything is effectively being steamed at a low temperature,” he said. “It creates a much more moist end product.”
Wong, who was born in Britain, recommends velveting in non-Chinese applications, too. He has employed it in chicken and mushroom pie and poulet Chasseur.
“Coq au vin, beef stroganoff, you’ll notice a massive difference with velveting.”
Butter-soy chicken and asparagus stir-fry
How do Chinese restaurant stir-fries deliver silky and tender meat with a sauce that seems to cling? The secret is a technique called velveting. When meat is velveted (a two-step process of marinating in a cornstarch mixture and blanching in either oil or water), even lean cuts like chicken breast become supremely juicy. Here, velveting does the heavy lifting in this lightning-quick stir-fry, featuring a sublimely savory sauce of butter, soy sauce and lemon. To speed things along further, you can prep the vegetables while the chicken marinates.
Yield: 2 to 4 servings
Total time: 50 minutes
Ingredients:
For the Chicken:
1 boneless, skinless chicken breast (10 to 12 ounces), or 2 smaller chicken breasts (about 6 ounces each), thinly sliced
1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon soy sauce
Black pepper
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 tablespoon egg white (from 1 egg; save the rest for an omelet)
For the Stir-Fry:
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/4 pound asparagus (4 to 5 medium stalks), cut into 1-inch pieces
6 large button mushrooms, quartered (about 4 ounces)
1/2 red bell pepper, sliced
Salt and black pepper
3 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 lemon wedge
Toasted sesame seeds, for serving (optional)
Cooked rice, for serving
Preparation:
1. Marinate the chicken: In a bowl, combine chicken, cornstarch, baking soda, sugar, salt, soy sauce and a few cracks of black pepper. Add the oil and 1 tablespoon of egg white. Using a spoon, mix until well combined and the chicken appears glossy and velvety. Cover bowl and refrigerate chicken for at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours.
2. When chicken is marinated, place a colander in your sink. In a saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Carefully add marinated chicken to the boiling water. Use tongs or chopsticks to separate the pieces (some egg white may float to the surface). Cook for 90 seconds, then drain the chicken in the colander. Shake the colander to remove excess liquid (the chicken won’t be fully cooked yet).
3. Start the stir-fry: Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet or wok over medium-high. When the oil is hot (it should flow quickly when you tilt the pan), add the asparagus, mushrooms and bell pepper and stir-fry until lightly browned, about 4 minutes. Transfer chicken from the colander to the skillet and add a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir-fry constantly for 1 minute.
4. Push the chicken and vegetables to one side of the skillet and reduce heat to medium-low. In an empty area of the skillet, add the butter, allowing it to melt and sizzle. Then pour the soy sauce onto the butter and stir to combine. Push the chicken and vegetables into the sauce and stir-fry for 30 seconds. (The sauce should cling to the chicken.)
5. Transfer to a platter and squeeze juice from the lemon wedge over top. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if using. Serve immediately with rice.

Unrivaled charts a new path for women’s basketball
By REMY TUMIN
When Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty stepped onto the court last Friday night, she did not have a thunderous crowd of 19,000 fans behind her, as she often does when she tips off at Barclays Center.
Instead, she was playing in front of just 850 fans on a soundstage near Miami.
But organizers of Unrivaled, a new 3-on-3 women’s basketball league, were banking that thousands more would tune in from home, drawn by a condensed format, some of the best players in the world and a made-for-TV approach that aims to bring viewers close to the action.
“The content piece and the TV piece of this is huge for us,” said Napheesa Collier, a forward for the Minnesota Lynx who founded the league with Stewart (Collier’s Lunar Owls topped Stewart’s team, the Mist, 84-80 in Friday night’s season opener). “We want to make it the most interactive, fun and exciting experience we can for people.”
In addition to packaging the game in a digestible format, the league is firmly centered around its athletes, providing equity stakes, child care, on-site therapeutic services and, for many players, a higher salary for the eight-week competition than they will make in the five-month WNBA season.
“Success can be a bunch of different things, but most importantly it’s making sure the player experience was the best one possible,” Stewart said. She added, “The red carpet is rolled out.”
And it comes with deep pockets: The league announced in December that it had raised $35 million from investors including Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps; tennis star Coco Gauff; Dawn Staley, the women’s basketball coach at the University of South Carolina; former New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony; and Geno Auriemma, the University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach. Corporate sponsors include Ally Financial, cosmetics retailer Sephora and online furniture retailer Wayfair, which bought the naming rights to Unrivaled’s arena.
There are six teams — the Lunar Owls, the Phantom, the Mist, the Roses, the Laces and the Vinyls — and six players per team. They compete in an arena inside a 23,000-square-foot complex in Medley, Florida, just outside

Miami.
“It’s basketball excellence. It’s perfect spacing. It’s showcasing the athlete’s skill set,” said Micky Lawler, Unrivaled’s commissioner. “It’s bringing out the best of women’s basketball.”
While other secondary leagues have foundered in the past, analysts are hopeful that Unrivaled will set a precedent, most notably for the talent it has attracted, including Brittney Griner, Angel Reese, Sabrina Ionescu and Aliyah Boston. (Two of the WNBA’s biggest stars — A’ja Wilson, a three-time winner of the league’s MVP award, and Caitlin Clark, the 2024 rookie of the year — are not participating.)
It helps that Unrivaled’s debut comes at a time of explosive growth for women’s basketball. But it is not meant to compete with the WNBA. Rather, organizers hope the league, which will run through mid-March, will provide another option — with higher visibility at home — for athletes who play overseas during the WNBA offseason, in part because of a yawning pay gap with their male counterparts in the NBA.
Unrivaled has an exclusive media rights deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, which also owns a stake in the league. Games will be an hour long and will be broadcast on TNT, the current home of many NBA games, on Friday and Monday nights, and on TruTV on Saturday nights. They will also be streamed on Max.
Coverage will be anchored by Candace Parker, a threetime WNBA champion; Renee Montgomery, a former WNBA All-Star; and basketball journalist Lauren Jbara. Lisa Leslie, one of the first WNBA players, will contribute on occasion.
Players have spent the last few weeks getting accustomed to the size of the court — 72 feet long versus the WNBA’s regulation 94 feet — and new rules, such as allowing only one free throw per foul. It’s all part of an effort to maximize speed and skill.
“Everybody talks a great game about how they want to create a sport for the 21st century, and as we know, everybody has competition for their attention spans,” said John Learing, Unrivaled’s chief content officer. “We really wanted to create a showcase for our players to be able to maximize their offseason.”
No fan in the arena will be farther than 35 feet — or as Learing put it, about five Brittney Griners — from the court. The main camera will be only 51 feet from center court, compared with 81 feet for an NBA game, Learing said.
About 18 cameras will be focused on the game, including a rail camera that runs the length of the court, Learing said. The social media team will be on standby with additional hand-held cameras to create highlight reels.
The compressed size of the court and the smaller arena mean players — and fans — will be able to hear much more on-court chatter.
“It’s definitely intimate, and you’re definitely going to hear a lot of stuff,” said Jewell Loyd, a veteran guard for the Seattle Storm who will play for the Mist. “But at the same time, that’s what you want, and it’s definitely going to make us play a little harder.”
Adapting the intimacy of the small arena for a national broadcast means walking a fine line between capturing basketball in a familiar form and “innovating around the game,” said Craig Barry, executive vice president and chief content officer for TNT Sports.
“You want to make sure that you’re trying things and you’re prepared to fail quickly and move on, or understand how things are working and then build on that,” he said. He added, “We’re going to learn every single week.”
TNT’s primary focus, Barry said, will be making sure fans understand who the athletes are and “why you should love them or why you should love to root against them.” Behind-the-scenes access to athletes will help build and carry a narrative week after week.
Angel Reese, a forward for the Chicago Sky of the WNBA, who hosts a popular podcast, put it bluntly: “This is the exposure we deserve.”
The league’s success will be measured in part by how far it pushes the boundaries of what televised sports can look like while preserving the integrity of the sport of basketball, said Dennis Deninger, a former longtime producer at ESPN who taught sports management at Syracuse University.
“You want to attract basketball fans with enhancements, not disruptions,” he said. “There are things you can do to enhance this product and make it feel like it’s innovative without tipping the model upside down.”
The prime-time slot on TNT is “really important,” Deninger said, adding that it could put pressure on the WNBA to make its games easier to find on television.
Unrivaled’s organizers have created a structure for female athletes to take ownership of their future in a way they haven’t been able to before, said Nefertiti Walker, an associate professor of sports management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a former college basketball player.
The players “have come together with their power and their money and influence and said, ‘We’re just going to create something totally different,’” Walker said. “That’s really powerful and probably telling for what the future of women’s sports looks like.”
