Executive order alone will not end gender violence, governor says
By THE STAR STAFF
Gov. Jenniffer González Colón says that to deal with the situation of gender violence requires much more than signing an executive order declaring a state of emergency in Puerto Rico.
“For violence there is no piece of paper that you can have that says, ‘Tomorrow there is not going to be a murder.’ If it were like that I would do it right now,” the governor said late last week. “For me the important thing in this moment is going to be the
appointment of the women’s advocate, that should be a person who leads with strength. I will name Justice Secretary Janet Parra working with victims and carrying out [policies], where she was in charge of this division of the Department of Justice, that are key and indispensable elements to work with the matter of gender violence.”
“If we declare or not an executive order about that, I am going to evaluate,” González Colón added. “I don’t discard it, but I need to see at this moment that it’s necessary.”
Governor: Feds will investigate inauguration death threat
By THE STAR STAFF
ov. Jenniffer González Colón said late last week that federal authorities will investigate an alleged threat made against her by Adriana Nicole “Audri Nix” Vázquez Pérez on Inauguration Day.
“Here nobody is going to be above the law. Evidently there was a disruption of the peace here yesterday [Thursday]. I can understand that people protest because protesting is something that they have
a right to. Thank God as American citizens we have that right of free expression, but free expression does not give you a right to interrupt or disrupt the peace of another,” the governor said. “So I do know and I have the information that both federal and state authorities will be managing the case, or the process goes on, but the people know that there are consequences. No one can be there threatening death, whoever they are, even though politically they don’t like it. Here you have to respect the law, the right to assembly, freedom of expression, but no right is above the rest.”
Governor extends Three Kings celebration to all corners of island
By THE STAR STAFF
Gov. Jenniffer González Colón has extended the traditional Three Kings Day (Epiphany) celebration in La Fortaleza to all corners of the island.
Today, activities will take place in San Juan at the Coca Cola Music Hall-T Mobile District, in Añasco at the Las Olas Pools and in Manatí at the Luis Muñoz Marín Recreation Plaza.
Activities began over the weekend in the municipalities of Vieques, Culebra, Fajardo and Ponce, among others.
González Colón visited Vieques, where the Three Kings accompanied her to hand out gifts to children in the public plaza where Plenealo was playing and Melwin Cedeño was cheering. The governor and her husband, Dr. José Yovín Vargas Llavona, were with Speaker of the House of Representatives Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Núñez, Vieques Mayor José “Junito” Corcino Acevedo, Carolina District Senators Héctor Joaquín Sánchez Álvarez and Marissa Jiménez Santoni, and Office for Socioeconomic and Community Development of Puerto Rico Executive Director Astrid Piñeiro.
In Culebra, the governor, along with her husband and the House speaker, were received by Mayor Edilberto Romero Llovet. The children received their gifts from the Three Wise Men at the Fine Arts Center where they enjoyed clowns, bounce houses and games.
In Fajardo, children enjoyed the educational attractions that the Firefighters Bureau brought to the Antonio Rafael Barceló public plaza and events coordinated with other government agencies.
Accompanying the governor, her husband and the House speaker were Fajardo Mayor José Aníbal “Joey” Meléndez Méndez, first lady Yarenis López de Jesús, the mayor’s mother Diana Méndez de Meléndez, Ceiba Mayor Samuel “Samy” Rivera Báez, Carolina District Sens. Sánchez Álvarez and Jiménez Santoni, and Firefighters Bureau Commissioner Josué Piñeiro Torres.
Three Kings Day activities in Ponce took place at the City Hall and the Plaza de las Delicias. Mayor Marlese Sifre Rodríguez was there with her family; Peñuelas Mayor Josean González Febres; Reps. Gabriel Rodríguez Aguiló, Ángel Fourquet Cordero and Ensol Rodríguez Torres; Sens. Marially González Huertas and Jamie Barlucea Maldonado; and designated Family Secretary Suzanne Roig Fuertes.
La Fortaleza offers details on Three Kings Day festival
Roig Fuertes offered details on Sunday about the “STEM KIDS FEST” project, which continues today with the gift-giving event called “Kings with the People” (Reyes con el Pueblo).
The initiative of Gov. Jenniffer González Colón, is focused on integrating STEM in the early development of children.
“Promoting STEM for children from the government constitutes a transformative opportunity for the educational and social future of Puerto Rico,” Roig Fuertes said in a written statement. “This initiative, led by Governor Jenniffer González Colón, reflects her vision of placing children at the center of public policies, recognizing that the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are essential tools to prepare new generations to face the challenges of a highly globalized and technological world. By integrating these areas into the early stages of child development, not only are curiosity and creative learning stimulated, but the foundation for building a more innovative, competitive and prosperous country is also strengthened. With this proposal, the Governor reaffirms her commitment to position Puerto Rico as a leader in advanced education,
ensuring a promising future for our island and its children.”
The delivery of “Reyes con el Pueblo” gifts is an effort between private companies and the island government (Tourism Company, Family Department-ACUDEN, Department of Housing, Aqueduct and Sewer Authority, Puerto Rico Lottery) and the municipalities of Bayamón, Guaynabo and Ciales to make possible the delivery of toys and experiences in each place. The partnership has made it possible to increase the distribution of toys and, as happened in last week’s inauguration, savings were achieved for the government.
Today, the governor will also participate in the Kings with the People activities, which begin at the Coca Cola Music Hall in the T-Mobile District of San Juan, starting at 9 a.m. In Añasco, the events begin at 11 a.m., at the Las Olas Pool, while at 1 p.m. they will begin at the Luis Muñoz Rivera Recreation Plaza in Manatí.
Governor asks Biden to declare state of emergency after blackout
By THE STAR STAFF
Gov. Jenniffer González Colón sent a letter to President Joe Biden late last week to request a declaration of a federal state of emergency after the blackout on the last day of the year.
The governor said that with her request she expects that Puerto Rico will not depend only on renewable energy.
“That the president bypasses the process of FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Agency] and the Department of Energy to release the money, the $18 billion that we have to improve the generation and transmission [systems] and that has [run into] such a roadblock,” the governor said.
“It has come another than 11-14 times, now it will come another time in January, but the money needed to fix the electrical system hasn’t been disbursed,” she continued.
“The money that has been disbursed is the separate fund of $1 billion that was approved for solar panels, and I applaud this, it has been very efficient, but the $18 billion that we have had for more than seven years has not yet come out.”
“And there are also some requirements of the federal government for a type of exclusive energy that in this moment in Puerto Rico, you can’t depend on having generation of natural gas or burn combustible fossil fuels and how much it costs me to have an exclusive wind or solar panel and how much it costs me to have an exclusive wind or solar panel plant,” González Colón said. “So I hope that with this we can understand that Puerto Rico has to be lit up and that we can’t bet on only one kind of technology. In addition to that, it will permit a faster process for FEMA and that the federal government does it in an expedited manner in environmental terms as well.”

Statehood supporters file ethics complaint against US Reps. Velázquez, Ocasio-Cortez
By THE STAR STAFF
Agroup of Puerto Rican statehood supporters, including Gregorio Igartúa, José Garriga Picó, Héctor Ramos, José M. Saldaña, Ivette Chardón, Ilka Ríos, Philip Hopgood and Bob Segarra, have filed an ethics complaint against U.S. Reps. Nydia Velázquez and Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez.
The complaint, filed with the Office of Congressional Ethics, is in response to Velázquez and Ocasio-Cortez supporting the “Alliance” between the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP by its acronym in Spanish) and the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC by its initials in Spanish) during the November 2024 election.
The complainants assert that by endorsing PIP gubernatorial candidate Juan Dalmau Ramírez, who they said has ties to communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, Velázquez and Ocasio-Cortez have “lost credibility and trust in Congress.” They argue that their actions go against the democratic rights they are obligated to defend as representatives in the U.S. Congress.
In the November 2024 election, five political parties in Puerto Rico were officially qualified to participate with their respective candidates. Two of those parties, the MVC and the PIP, support independence for Puerto Rico, the complainants noted, and their main leaders have connections with leftist governments in Latin America, specifically the aforementioned Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
The complainants claim that the alliance between the MVC and PIP was illegal, as they are registered separately and receive
public funds separately, yet operate as one.
A complaint regarding this matter has been filed with Puerto Rico’s State Elections Commission and reported to the U.S. Department of Justice, but has yet to be adjudicated.
Velázquez and Ocasio-Cortez visited
Puerto Rico to participate in the electoral process, endorsing Dalmau Ramírez and other candidates from the MVC-PIP Alliance. The ethics complaint cites statements made by the congresswomen to the media during their visit.
Velázquez, in her endorsement, said: “Today, with my head held high and facing the sun, I embrace hope. … Puerto Rico neither surrenders nor sells out.”
Ocasio-Cortez also voiced her support for the Alliance, saying, “It is time to elect a government that works for all the people, not just for a few privileged people.”
“The alliance between the PIP and the MVC has shown us that there can be a path to a future for all Puerto Ricans, not just for the rich and powerful …” she added.
The group said both members of Congress acted “against the best interest of our National Security and provisions in the U.S. Constitution Preamble. In this respect they violated their Oath of Office as stated by law.”
“Velázquez and Ocasio live the American dream. Ocasio went from being a bartender to a Representative in Congress. Velázquez went from the PR Office in N.Y. to Representative,” the statehood backers said in their statement. “Both swore allegiance to the U.S. Constitution. In contradiction, they visited Puerto Rico to interfere with our democratic system, endorsing leftist candidates.”
The complainants contend that by supporting the Alliance between the PIP and MVC, the congresswomen promoted an electoral fraud and a political manipulation that violated equal rights under the U.S. Constitution and due process rights of voters in Puerto Rico, all of whom have a
right to a legal election process, as do the candidates from parties that were not part of the Alliance.
Velázquez and Ocasio-Cortez, the complainants continued, supported the parties that support the separation of Puerto Rico from the United States, disregarding and/or without considering the three millions residents of Puerto Rico who are American citizens, and the five million who reside in the states, including more than one million in New York where the two congresswomen reside.
“Velázquez and Ocasio want to put us on the path to a republic, without federal aid or American citizenship,” they said.
Ironically, the complainants said, Velázquez and Ocasio-Cortez, along with three other congressmen, made a request last September to the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice to assign federal election observers to monitor compliance or non-compliance with the island’s State Electoral Commission and with federal voting rights laws. To the contrary, both were part of an illegal scheme to defraud the electoral process in Puerto Rico in 2024, the group said.
“Velazquez and Ocasio violated their obligation as federal officials and representatives of the federal government and affirmative action for their ethical misconduct must be applied to them as legally necessary as the Committee considers pertinent,” the complainants said. “The Office of Congressional Ethics has a duty to investigate allegations of unethical and illegal misconduct of members of Congress. We request from your Office to investigate this complaint against the two Congresswomen …”
El Combate residents urge action against Missouri woman suspected of arson
By THE STAR STAFF
Residents and business owners in Cabo Rojo’s El Combate tourist sector have urged law enforcement to apprehend a female tourist suspected of arson attacks on several local establishments.
The woman, identified as Danielle Bertothy, from Missouri, has allegedly left the island, prompting demands for action from the Puerto Rico Police Bureau and the Attorney General’s Office
of the Mayagüez Judicial District.
Security footage from a restaurant captured Bertothy arguing with other patrons and assaulting a waitress. The El Combate businesses impacted by the fires include Marinera, Bar Marea and Artesanía Juavia.
In a statement, locals expressed their disappointment that Bertothy had not been arrested despite multiple interventions by the Cabo Rojo Municipal Police. They claimed that this allowed her to return and set fire to Bar Marea
and several other structures. Witnesses reported that she then went to sleep at her accommodation and disappeared the next day, leaving no one to bear responsibility for the damages.
Community members took to social media to identify Bertothy, discovering she works for an event coordination agency. Prior to the arson incidents, Bertothy reportedly entered a restaurant, ordered alcoholic drinks, and proceeded to argue with both diners and staff. When asked to leave, she be-
came increasingly aggressive and assaulted an employee, leading to the involvement of the Municipal Police.
However, instead of arresting her for the offense, officers merely escorted Bertothy to her accommodation, without addressing the harm she had caused at the restaurant.
U.S. media outlets have reported that Bertothy has since been suspended from her job.
New Orleans releases most names of victims killed in attack
By ISABELLE TAFT
Things had been looking up for Elliot Wilkinson, a 40-year-old man who was among the 14 people killed in New Orleans last week in what federal authorities were investigating as a terrorist attack.
Wilkinson had been released from prison and was homeless, but he had started searching for an apartment, according to a local homeless outreach group, Unity of Greater New Orleans. And he was back in one of his favorite places, according to his brother, Cecil Wilkinson.
“That’s where he wanted to go, when he got out, so that’s where he went,” the brother said. “He loved that city.”
In the early hours of New Year’s Day, a Texas man drove a pickup into the city’s French Quarter, where crowds of people had gathered along Bourbon Street to celebrate. Fourteen people were killed, and dozens more injured, including two police officers hurt during a shootout that killed the driver.
Bourbon Street’s bars, live music and crowds draw a lively but diverse mix of people, including tourists, buskers and homeless people down on their luck. On a holiday night, it drew a youthful crowd. Many of the victims were in their teens and 20s.
On Friday evening, the city released the names of 12 of the 14 victims. All had died of blunt force injuries, according to the emailed release. A 13th victim was identified by the Metropolitan Police in London as a British citizen: Edward Pettifer, 31. One person had not yet been identified.
As their names were revealed, friends and families mourned the promising futures cut short. Some had just started college or new jobs. On Friday, people gathered near flowers and candles arranged along the path that the truck had taken. President Joe Biden was planning to visit Monday and meet with the victims’ families and others affected.
Among the victims was Drew Dauphin, 26, who had come to the city from Alabama with his little brother, Matthew. They had gotten separated after going to a concert and getting some pizza. Hubert Gauthreaux, 21, had planned to watch the fireworks along the river, he told his family. That morning, they checked his phone’s location, and saw it had moved to Bourbon Street.
Matthew Tenedorio, 25, had gone out with friends after eating dinner with his parents. He was remembered for his childhood

high jinks with his cousins, playing pranks and fighting with Nerf guns.
Kareem Badawi and Ni’Kyra Cheyenne Dedeaux were 18. Badawi had recently finished his first semester at the University of Alabama, where he majored in mechanical engineering, according to his father.
Dedeaux was from Gulfport, Mississippi. She had graduated from high school in the spring and was enrolling in college in New Orleans with plans to become a nurse.
The violence tore apart families and friends. Nicole Perez, 27, had just gotten a promotion at the deli where she worked. She left behind a 4-year-old son. Two cousins, Reggie Hunter, 37, and Kevin Curry, 38, came to the city to celebrate the new year together. Hunter died, and Curry was hospitalized with a broken leg.
Tiger Bech, a former college football player who died, was remembered by his little brother, Jack, in a post on social media: “Love you always brother!”
Some victims, like Wilkinson, had long-standing ties to New Orleans. Terrence Kennedy, 63, was a lifelong resident of the city and one of nine siblings, according to one of his nieces, Monisha James. With no children of his own, he was always ready to look after family members’ kids, she said. At family parties, he kept an eye out for plates
to clear and drinks to refill.
Although many locals avoid the area except to work or perform, Kennedy loved to people-watch and hang out outside a shop on Bourbon Street, James said. The family believes that is what drew him to the street on New Year’s Eve.
“He died doing something he liked to do,” she said.
Brandon Taylor, 43, was a restaurant cook and rapper. He regularly drove more than an hour from his home just south of New Orleans to see his fiancee, Heather Genusa, who lives near Baton Rouge. Genusa, 38, recalled that they talked on the phone for about six months before meeting in person in early 2023.
“I said once we meet, all the stars were going to align,” she said. “And they did. They really did.”
The couple were planning to move in together next month.
According to the city’s coroner, William Dimaio, 25, from New Jersey, was also among those killed.
Cecil Wilkinson said he had hoped to introduce his daughter to Elliot, but had not yet had the chance.
“We loved each other,” he said. “We always looked out for each other when we was younger.”
Some of the dozens of people injured in the attack were still hospitalized Saturday. Others had returned home but were still wrestling with what they had been through. Alexis Scott-Windham, 23, of Mobile, Alabama, who had gone to New Orleans with friends to celebrate New Year’s, said the attacker’s truck had hit her right ankle as she rushed from its path. The impact tore skin from the back of her leg and fractured her ankle in multiple places. She was also shot in the foot.
She’s not ready to return to New Orleans just yet, but in a month or so, she wants to visit the memorial on Bourbon Street.
“It could have been me,” she said.

Biden awards 18 Medals of Freedom, and delivers one unmistakable message
By MICHAEL D. SHEAR and ZACH MONTAGUE
With 16 days left in a political career that spanned a half-century, President Joe Biden on Saturday conferred one of the nation’s highest honors on core members of the political, financial and celebrity establishment of which he has long been a part.
President-elect Donald Trump will replace Biden on Jan. 20, determined to continue his assault on what he has long called “the swamp.” In 2016, Trump vowed to wage war against establishment members in both parties who he said had “reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost.”
But on Saturday, Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 18 people, including some of the brightest lights of the old guard that Trump wants to tear down. In doing so, the 82-year-old president is sending an unmistakable message of support for a democratic order he has said is threatened by Trump’s reelection.
“Let’s remember, our sacred effort continues, and to keep going, as my mother would say, we have to keep the faith,” he told the crowd in the East Room of the White House at the end of the ceremony.
Among those receiving the award were Hillary Clinton, the former first lady, senator and secretary of state whom Trump threatened to jail and who received a standing ovation Saturday; Robert F. Kennedy, the assassinated senator whose son has embraced Trump; and George Romney, the late father of former Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, who repeatedly rejected Trump’s actions and philosophy. The younger Romney accepted the award Saturday. Kennedy’s medal was accepted by his daughter, Kerry.
As many presidents have done with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Biden also
office, he gave the medal to two professional golfers, an Olympic athlete, and Reps. Devin Nunes of California and Jim Jordan of Ohio, two of his fiercest Republican loyalists in Congress.
But Biden’s use of the presidential prerogative appeared to be more even pointed than that of some of his predecessors.
His decision to give the medal posthumously to Kennedy could be read as a rebuke to Kennedy’s son, a member of perhaps the country’s most famous Democratic family. The decision by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to endorse Trump during the campaign — despite denunciations from most of his relatives — helped lead to Trump’s choice of him to head the Department of Health and Human Services.
The White House noted that the elder Romney, a Republican, had been chair and president of American Motors Corp. and had later served as governor of Michigan and as secretary of housing and urban development. The younger Romney is the only Republican to vote twice to convict Trump after his two impeachments.
honored some of his party’s most prolific fundraisers, including the man who looms largest of all among Democratic donors — George Soros, a liberal activist billionaire whom Republicans have cast as the party’s evil puppet master. They also included the media executive and cultural figure Anna Wintour, who put the first lady, Jill Biden, on the cover of Vogue twice in the past four years while spurning Melania Trump during her husband’s presidency. Wintour is one of the leading fundraisers in the fashion industry, having hosted events for Biden’s reelec-
tion campaign in London and Paris last year.
Biden also recognized artists, musicians, sports figures, philanthropists and others who have contributed to society, including singer Bono, actor Michael J. Fox, basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson and investor David M. Rubenstein.
The 19th person picked to receive the award — soccer megastar Lionel Messi — did not attend the ceremony or send a representative to accept on his behalf because of a scheduling conflict, according to the White House.
“As cultural icons, dignified statesmen, humanitarians, rock stars, sports stars, you feed the hungry, you give hope to those that are hurting, and you craft the signs and sounds of our movements and our memories,” Biden said.
All modern presidents have awarded the medal to those whom they found deserving, often as they are leaving the political scene for good and sometimes with an ideological tilt. It is seen by historians as a final use of the presidential megaphone to say to Americans: This is whom we should admire and emulate.
After Trump won in 2016, President Barack Obama gave the medal to NBA star Michael Jordan, actors Tom Hanks and Robert De Niro and others. Earlier, Obama had given the award to Biden, who had served as his vice president.
Four years later, as Trump was leaving
The award for the elder Romney echoes Biden’s decision this week to award the Presidential Citizens Medal, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors, to Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., who led the effort to hold Trump accountable for his actions during the assault on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Both awards from a Democratic president to prominent Republicans offered to give Biden the kind of public relations jolt that has mostly been reserved for Trump since the election.
The same could not be said for Soros. By awarding the medal to him, Biden is acknowledging how important the investor and philanthropist has been to the Democratic Party. That is something that many members of Biden’s party have been wary of doing, fearing that Trump and other Republicans would seize on it as evidence of the conspiratorial control they say he has.
But Biden seems willing to ignore that concern. After weeks in which Trump has showcased Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, as a member of his inner circle, Biden appeared to want to say: We have our billionaires, too.
Soros has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on progressive politics since the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, which unleashed a torrent of money into politics from businesses and the wealthy people who run them. Soros and his family crucially stood by Biden immediately after Biden’s disastrous debate performance last year.
Jeju Air’s problems mount after crash that killed 179 people
By DAISUKE WAKABAYASHI
When Jeju Air’s status as South Korea’s biggest low-cost carrier seemed under threat from the merger of the country’s two biggest airlines last year, the company’s CEO assured employees that it would “actively respond,” possibly by acquiring smaller rivals.
Now, a week after a crash that killed 179 people on Dec. 29, Jeju Air’s future is clouded by even deeper questions.
South Korean officials on Thursday raided the company’s offices and imposed a travel ban on Kim E-bae, the CEO, as part of the investigation into the country’s worst air disaster in almost three decades. Passengers are canceling bookings, adding further strain to a balance sheet heavy with debt. And Jeju Air’s stock price, already trading near record lows, has fallen 10% since the disaster.
Earlier in the week, Kim said Jeju Air would cut 15% of its flights until March to “enhance operational stability.”
As investigators look into what caused Jeju Air Flight 7C2216 to crash, the airline has come under intense government and public scrutiny for how it operates. Some of its operational practices are being challenged, including how it flew its planes more frequently than competitors and how it outsourced its maintenance overseas.
At a news conference at Muan International Airport on the day of the crash, Kim said maintenance checks had found no problems with the plane, which he said had no history of accidents. In a public statement, Jeju Air said it was “committed” to helping anyone affected by the crash and was “fully cooperating” with investigations into its cause. It did not immediately respond to a phone call seeking comment.
Jeju Air’s business outlook was already uncertain. Over the past two years, like other airlines, the company has grappled with increased costs because of inflation and higher interest rates. The capacity of Jeju Air’s flights had not fully returned to prepandemic levels, according to OAG, a global air travel data provider. The carrier operated 4% fewer flights in 2024 than in 2019.
The crash came after the completion of Korean Air’s acquisition of a majority stake in Asiana Airlines last month. The merger — a $1.05 billion deal agreed upon four years ago — will eventually create a single national carrier. As part of that deal, three budget carriers operated by the two companies will be brought

under one brand that will surpass Jeju Air as South Korea’s largest low-cost offering.
Two decades ago, Jeju Air became the country’s first upstart budget airline with the aim of challenging the duopoly of Korean Air and Asiana. Jeju Air would fly the busy tourist route between Seoul and Jeju, a scenic island off the southern coast of South Korea. The airline is majority-owned by AK Holdings, a conglomerate best known for selling laundry detergent and toothpaste. Jeju Air’s secondbiggest shareholder is Jeju’s provincial government.
Jeju Air emerged from a jumble of other small airlines to become the country’s leading low-cost carrier. It added routes across Asia, including stops outside of the traditional travel hubs, to serve increasingly wealthy South Koreans looking to vacation abroad. As measured by the number of available seats, it added capacity of 20% a year on average over the past 12 years, OAG said.
Like many budget airlines, Jeju Air kept a tight rein on costs, put new technology in place and squeezed travelers for even small perks. It focused on short regional flights served by the same model of airplane, the single-aisle Boeing 737-800.
“It’s a reliable low-cost carrier with good reach into Southeast Asia and north Asia,” said Mayur Patel, a regional sales director for OAG.
After an initial public offering in 2015, Jeju Air was on fairly stable financial footing until the pandemic struck. Since 2020, it has been forced to raise capital on three separate occasions, totaling nearly $500 million. In also received a government loan of $29 million on the condition that it maintain 90% of its work-
force.
Even after travel restrictions were lifted and Jeju Air was awash in pent-up demand, its debt problems persisted because its costs were going up just as fast as its revenue.
In corporate filings, Jeju Air said it must repay roughly $165 million in short-term loans by the end of September. That already exceeded its cash and cash equivalent balance of nearly $150 million. And this was before the run on cancellations that is expected to further crimp its cash balance.
But analysts said liquidity concerns are common for low-cost airlines.
“Most of these airlines, if you look at their financial position, you would think a lot of them are financially vulnerable, but airlines have a way to survive these things more so than other companies,” said Brendan Sobie, an independent aviation consultant and analyst. He explained that companies in airline supply chains have a strong incentive to help airlines that experience trouble.
On Thursday, a Jeju Air executive dis-
missed liquidity concerns, saying the company was proceeding with expansion plans, including a deal to purchase up to 40 new planes from Boeing in the coming years.
The company wants to modernize its fleet to take advantage of a South Korean government plan to support low-cost airlines as a counter to the monopoly risk posed by the union of Korean Air and Asiana. The government said it planned to give priority to budget airlines in awarding new international routes from South Korea to Europe and Asia.
But now, some of the operating practices that helped Jeju Air keep its costs low are under a microscope.
Jeju Air flew its fleet of Boeing 737-800 planes more frequently than its competitors. In the first 11 months of 2024, Jeju Air flew its planes 14.1 hours on average per day, according to South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. This compared with 8.6 hours for Korean Air and 11.4 hours for its low-cost carrier, Jin Air, according to the ministry.

US jobs report poses first big stocks test of 2025
The stock market faces its first major test of the year in the coming week, with investors counting on the U.S. jobs report to show a stable but not overheated economy that underpins expectations for equity gains in 2025.
Stocks wobbled at the end of December and the start of January, cooling off after a torrid run. The benchmark S&P 500 closed 2024 with a 23% rise and posted its biggest two-year gain since 1997-1998.
Prospects for a third straight standout year hinge in part on the strength of the economy, with labor market data among the most important reads into the economy’s health. The data could also help clarify the Federal Reserve’s interest rate plans after the central bank last month rattled markets by reducing its projected rate cuts for 2025.
“Investors are going to want to see confirmation that labor trends remain solid, which means the economic outlook probably remains firm,” said Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial.
“Any kind of data that suggests things are weakening a little bit more than expected I think could create volatility,” Saglimbene said.
Investors enter the year generally upbeat about the U.S. economy. A Natixis Investment Managers survey conducted at the end of last year found 73% of institutional investors said the U.S. will avoid a recession in 2025.
Labor market data has been volatile in recent months following aerospace industry strikes and hurricanes. November data showed growth of 227,000 jobs that rebounded from a tepid rise in October.
The three-month average gain of 138,000 “suggests that hiring continues to slow gradually,” Capital Economics analysts said in a note.
The report for December, due out on Jan 10, is expected to show growth of 150,000 jobs with the unemployment rate at 4.2%, according to a Reuters poll of economists.
Following the prior two reports, “this is going to be probably the first clean read of what is the underlying trend in the labor market,” said Angelo Kourkafas, senior investment strategist at Edward Jones.
Investors are also wary of the jobs report revealing an overly strong economy, with a revival of inflation seen as one of the key risks to markets early in the year.
The Fed at its December meeting lifted its forecast for expected inflation in 2025, paving the way for higher interest rates than it previously forecast.
After lowering its benchmark rate at three straight meetings, the Fed is expected to pause its easing cycle when it next meets at the end of January before making further cuts of about 50 basis points over the rest of the year.
For the jobs report, the market is “looking for that Goldilocks number -- neither too hot, nor too cold,” Kourkafas said.

Despite a strong 2024, stocks were weak in December, with the S&P 500 falling 2.5%. December had only five days with more stocks in the index gaining as opposed to declining, the lowest share of such relatively positive days for any month going back to 1990, according to Bespoke Investment Group.

Following the end-of-year holiday period, “next week probably ushers in more robust volumes, which would certainly be a better indication of directionality for the market,” said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth.

Ukraine launches new attack in Kursk region of western Russia
By MARC SANTORA
Ukrainian forces have gone on the offensive in the Kursk region of Russia, Ukrainian and Russian officials said Sunday, in what appeared to be an effort to regain the initiative there as they struggle to thwart relentless Russian assaults across eastern Ukraine.
Ukraine took about 500 square miles last summer in the Kursk region in a surprise incursion, but Russia clawed back about half of the territory in the months that followed.
On Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry said Ukrainian forces had launched a large new assault featuring tanks, mine-clearing equipment and at least a dozen armored vehicles. The ministry claimed to have thwarted the attack.
Ukrainian soldiers fighting in the area who were reached by phone declined to discuss continuing operations beyond saying that Ukraine was on the offensive in parts of the Kursk region and that fierce fighting was raging there. The Ukrainian military high command said Sunday night that there were 42 “combat engagements” in the region over the past 24 hours and that 12 were still happening.
It was not possible to verify the claims by either side independently, and the scope of the Ukrainian assaults remained unclear.
Ukrainian and Western military analysts said that the attacks could be a deliberate attempt at misdirection, trying to force Russian troops to shore up defenses there in the hopes of weakening them on the front line in Ukrainian territory.
Russian forces continue to make costly but consistent gains in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine. They are steadily grinding down a pocket of resistance around the town of Kurakhove and are also fighting to envelop the larger nearby city of Pokrovsk, Ukrainian soldiers and officials said.

Russian troops are now within 1 mile of a critical supply road leading to Pokrovsk, which had served as a vital logistics and transportation hub for Ukrainian forces in the region.
Some U.S. officials initially expressed skepticism about the wisdom of Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk region in August, concerned that it might be a drain on already exhausted and undermanned brigades struggling to stabilize defensive lines in eastern Ukraine.
But as Russian casualties mounted, some of those U.S. officials changed their assessments.
Although Ukraine now holds less than half of the territory it seized in the Kursk offensive last summer, it has
Italy’s prime minister visits Trump at Mar-a-Lago
By EMMA BUBOLA
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy visited Presidentelect Donald Trump on Saturday at his Florida golf club for an informal meeting.
The trip to the club, Mar-a-Lago, came only a few days before Meloni is set to welcome President Joe Biden for an official visit to Italy and the Vatican from Thursday through Jan. 12.
On Saturday, she appeared in the grand ballroom. Trump, according to pool reports, said he was having dinner with Meloni, whom he called “a fantastic woman,” adding, “She’s really taken Europe by storm, and everyone else.”
They, along with some potential members of the future Trump administration — including the nominee for secretary of state, Marco Rubio, and for Treasury, Scott Bessent — then
watched a screening of a film titled “The Eastman Dilemma: Lawfare or Justice.”
Meloni and Trump have expressed mutual appreciation in the past, and her trip is one of the first few visits by a foreign leader to the president-elect’s estate in Florida since his election in November. The meeting reinforces the hopes of Meloni’s supporters that the conservative Italian prime minister will become Trump’s go-to ally in Europe.
Much of that role would involve mediating tensions between other European leaders and Trump, who has threatened to start a trade war with the continent as well as to reduce American backing for some NATO countries and for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
The agenda of the meeting was unclear Saturday night, but observers expected the two leaders would discuss those issues.
managed in recent weeks to slow Russia’s advances despite repeated waves of Russian counterattacks, including assaults bolstered by thousands of North Korean soldiers.
President Vladimir Putin of Russia has sought to play down the significance of the Kursk incursion, which was the first ground invasion of Russia since the end of World War II.
While saying that it was the military’s “sacred duty” to expel Ukrainian forces, he recently declined to offer a timeline for when that might be accomplished.
“We will definitely drive them out,” Putin said at his annual news conference in December. “I cannot answer the question about a specific date right now.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Moscow continued to pay a high price trying to push the Ukrainians out.
“Specifically, in battles today and yesterday near just one village — Makhnovka in the Kursk region — the Russian army lost up to a battalion of infantry, including North Korean soldiers and Russian paratroopers,” Zelenskyy said Saturday night. A battalion is composed of 600 to 800 soldiers. It was not possible to verify his claim, but the Pentagon recently said that North Korea was suffering mass casualties on the Kursk front, with more than 1,000 killed or wounded in only a few weeks.
RIA Novosti, a Russian state news agency, said that about 340 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed and wounded in Kursk the past 24 hours. That claim also could not be independently verified, and the news agency, citing the Russian Defense Ministry, did not mention Russian casualties.
Zelenskyy said that holding on to land in Kursk gave Ukraine a “very strong trump card” in any possible negotiations with Moscow.
President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to end the war rapidly once he takes office, without saying how.
Another possible topic of discussion, according to observers, was the detention in Iran of a prominent Italian reporter, Cecilia Sala. It happened a few days after Italy arrested, at the request of the United States, an Iranian suspected of providing drone components to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Iran has routinely detained foreigners and dual citizens to trade them for money and people.
One person briefed on the meeting said Meloni had pressed aggressively for it.
She also has a good relationship with Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and a close adviser of the presidentelect’s, which her supporters hope will bolster her international standing once Trump becomes president.
Since being elected, Trump has welcomed to Mar-aLago Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary, a champion of “illiberal democracy,” as well as Argentina’s firebrand rightwing president, Javier Milei. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada became the first Group of 7 leader to visit Trump in Florida since the election, after a threat to impose tariffs on Canada.
Tomiko Itooka of Japan, world’s oldest person, dies at 116
By MARTIN FACKLER
Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman born before the start of World War I and the sinking of the Titanic and who was believed to be the oldest person in the world, died at a nursing home in Ashiya, Japan. She was 116.
In a statement released Saturday, the mayor of Ashiya said Itooka passed away Dec. 29. He did not give a cause, but local news media reports said she died peacefully of complications related to old age.
“I offer my deepest condolences,” said Mayor Ryosuke Takashima. “Ms. Itooka gave us great courage and hope throughout her long life. I would like to express my gratitude once again.”
Itooka was declared the oldest living person by Guinness World Records in September after the death of
Maria Branyas Morera of Spain at age 117.
Itooka was born Tomiko Yano on May 23, 1908, in the city of Osaka, one of three children in a family that ran a clothing store. At that time, her country was a rising imperial power that had just defeated czarist Russia in war and was embarking on expansion into mainland Asia.
In the year of her birth, Japan signed an agreement with President Theodore Roosevelt’s secretary of state that averted conflict with the United States in exchange for Washington recognizing Japan’s annexation of the Korean Peninsula. During the span of her life, she saw her nation emerge as an Asian colonial empire, fall in fiery defeat in 1945, and rise again as an industrial giant and peaceful democracy.
Growing up in prewar Japan, she played volleyball in high school before marrying the owner of a textile company, Kenji Itooka, with whom she had two daughters and
two sons. During World War II, she stayed in Japan to run the business while her husband went to Korea, then a Japanese colony, to oversee a factory there.
“She single-handedly managed a Japanese office and raised her children during this period,” according to the Gerontology Research Group, which keeps a database of the world’s oldest people.
In 1979, her husband died after 51 years of marriage. Itooka then moved to Ashiya, a city outside Osaka, where she remained an avid hiker into her 80s. At 100, she was said to be still ascending the stone steps of her local Shinto shrine without a cane.
When once asked by local news media for the secret of her longevity, she reportedly credited eating bananas and drinking Calpis, a Japanese dairy drink. Itooka is survived by one daughter, one son and an unknown number of her five grandchildren.
A frigid first: Chile’s president visits Antarctica to bolster claims
By EVE SAMPSON
Chile’s president visited the South Pole late last week in a bid to fortify his country’s territorial claims to part of Antarctica, as competition in the region is growing bit by bit.
Gabriel Boric, the president, and a delegation of officials visited Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, a U.S. research base. It was the first time, his office said, that a Latin American president in office has set foot on the freezing continent.
Boric called the trip “a landmark” and “a confirmation of our claim of sovereignty in this space.”
At the other end of the world, the Arctic has drawn notice with climate change making the region more important for global trade, opening up access to its natural resources and intensifying military competition there. Antarctica, by con-

on Antarctica conducting scientific research, some of which could also be used to explore the region’s strategic and commercial potential. Competition to do so has quietly intensified in recent years, and looks likely to continue doing so, according to the report.
The Antarctic’s harsh environment and the treaty system have constrained access to its resources, but the region has a rich marine environment and potential reserves of oil, gas and minerals. The barren landscape is also a good spot for countries to place technology with military applications.
Russia has increased efforts to build monitoring stations for GLONASS, its version of GPS, which experts say also has military use. At least three Russian stations were already operating in Antarctica in 2015.
China in 2023 announced plans to build new satellite stations in Antarctica, another project with potential military applications.

trast, remained comparatively under the radar.
But more than a century after explorers raced to plant flags in the frigid polar desert, countries are once again starting to openly vie for influence in the region.
The area is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System, which mandates that “Antarctica shall be used for peaceful purposes only.” The Cold-War era pact and subsequent agreements aimed to make Antarctica a military-free zone and manage competing territorial claims.
For decades, the system largely succeeded in establishing an international consensus for the region, according to a 2023 report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based research institute.
Many nations have long-established or new facilities
The treaty bans mining in the region, protecting small reserves of iron ore, coal and chromium. Estimates vary greatly, but the region could also hold vast reserves of oil and natural gas. To the dismay of environmentalists, China and Russia are pursuing loosened restrictions on krill fishing.
Facets of the treaty that involve environmental protections will be up for review in 2048 but could be undermined before then.
Some signatories of the Antarctic treaty have also staked territorial claims — a number of which overlap — while others do not recognize the territorial claims of other countries. Chile is one of the few countries claiming territory, and it has installed a permanent settlement called Villa Las Estrellas.
Chile sought to strengthen its territorial claims in May 2024, holding a meeting with defense officials in the Antarctic as a symbol of sovereignty amid tension over Russia’s reported geological surveys in the Weddell Sea, an Antarctic region off South America’s southernmost tip.

It matters that U.S. sanction policies were overseen by a man who grew up watching his parents send money through Western Union to relatives in Nigeria.
That man, the deputy U.S. Treasury secretary, Wally Adeyemo, was born in the Nigerian city of Ibadan. He understood how catastrophic it could be when a community gets cut off from its financial lifeline in the United States. He brought that knowledge to the table when he recommended measures that would mitigate the unintended consequences of sanctions on innocent people abroad.

The real case for DEI
That’s worth remembering today as Americans bid farewell to the most diverse administration in U.S. history — and as we watch a new administration that pledges to dismantle diversity initiatives take power.
Joe Biden took office promising to create an administration that looked like America, and he delivered. Half of his Cabinet appointments are people of color, according to Inclusive America, a nonprofit organization that publishes a government diversity scorecard. His Cabinet included the first Black defense secretary (Lloyd Austin), the first female Treasury secretary (Janet Yellen), the first Native American Cabinet member (Deb Haaland, interior secretary) and the first Senate-confirmed openly gay Cabinet member (Pete Buttigieg, transportation secretary).
Even more striking is the number of senior officials who are immigrants or the children of immigrants. The director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy? Arati Prabhakar, who was born in India. The acting labor secretary, Julie Su, is the child of a woman who arrived in the United States on a cargo ship from China because she couldn’t afford a passenger ticket. At a time of rising ethnonationalism around the world, the Biden administration modeled just the opposite.
Too often, critics have labeled this commitment to diversity as politically correct window dressing or a source of government bloat. But when diversity is done right, it can be a crucial strategy for bolstering American power. The United States attracts the world’s best and brightest because they can rise here and eventually help run the place. Newcomers to China, Russia and Iran can’t expect the same thing. That makes diversity in the ranks of the federal government a big comparative advantage.
a grand experiment that directed federal agencies to search for disparities and address them. But progressives were never satisfied. Despite his diverse Cabinet, they complained that Biden’s inner circle was still white.
At the same time, some Republicans pushed back fiercely against DEI. To them, the only thing worse than big government is big woke government. As a senator, JD Vance cosponsored a bill that would stop federal money from flowing to companies and universities that practice DEI. Trump has suggested that white people should be compensated for “discrimination” suffered under Biden. As allegations of reverse discrimination, junk science and grift piled up, Democrats fell silent. By 2024, neither Biden nor Kamala Harris campaigned on DEI. It was Trump who brought it up — when he pledged to eliminate it.
But before we throw the baby out with that bathwater, let’s remind ourselves why diversity matters in government.
There are plenty of examples like Adeyemo, the Treasury official. Sameera Fazili, a former deputy director of the National Economic Council, had relatives in Indian-held Kashmir. She understood how dependent developing nations were on Ukrainian grain and how people would blame the United States and not Russia if they started going hungry. That’s why she volunteered to lead the administration’s global food security response for the first few months of the war, she said.
It’s no accident that, as interior secretary, Haaland found a way to auction off leases of public land for conservation and restoration, not just for drilling. As a member of the Pueblo of Laguna tribe in New Mexico, she was raised in her grandfather’s cornfields and learned a deep respect for the land.

Donald Trump seems to understand this. Despite his mantra of “America First,” he has tapped a host of foreignborn associates to play key roles, including the South Africanborn Elon Musk, who has been asked to suggest cuts to the federal budget, and the Indian-born Sriram Krishnan, who will become an adviser on artificial intelligence. Both favor expanding the H-1B visa program, which they say helps attract talented people from around the world. But their views have sparked a backlash from hard-liners who don’t want to see poorly paid new arrivals taking American jobs, let alone running the place.
And Biden’s director of the Office of Management and Budget, Shalanda Young — the first Black woman to hold the job — is credited with staving off government shutdowns by leaning on relationships she forged with Republicans on Capitol Hill. Her upbringing in rural Louisiana gave her an understanding of how to develop a rapport with Southern conservatives.
The Biden administration’s decision to draw on talent from different walks of life, rather than the well-connected few, has served America well.

“Our country was built by white Europeans, actually. Not third-world invaders from India,” Laura Loomer, a Trump acolyte, wrote in a series of social media posts that broke open a contentious debate in Trumpland over whether the tech moguls Trump has gotten in bed with are betraying his base.

From his very first day in office, he issued a series of executive orders that led to changes in how the federal government hires staff members, procures supplies and awards grants. It was
The incoming Trump administration is taking shape, stocked with combatants in the bitter offensive against DEI — championing choices whose main qualifications for running a major government agency or representing America abroad seem to be willingness to lie about an election, Trump family ties and looking good on television.
At least some immigrants, along with Musk and Krishnan, will have a place in the federal government under Trump. Even the person picked to run the civil rights division at the Justice Department, Harmeet Dhillon — who is expected to wage war on wokeness — is a Sikh born in India.
Even MAGA needs immigrants, it seems.

The sacrifices of Zoe Saldaña
By KYLE BUCHANAN
In this modern era of franchise moviemaking, Zoe Saldaña has earned plenty of capital.
The 46-year-old actress has starred in the three highestgrossing movies of all time: “Avatar” and the sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water,” in which she played the fierce alien Neytiri, and “Avengers: Endgame,” the Marvel team-up that featured her “Guardians of the Galaxy” character Gamora. If those weren’t enough, she’s also got three “Star Trek” films under her belt, too.
But one thing Saldaña didn’t have until now is a starring vehicle like “Emilia Pérez,” which scored 10 Golden Globe nominations including a supporting-actress nod for Saldaña. Then again, “Emilia Pérez” would be an outlier in any actor’s filmography simply because there are no other movies like it: Directed by Jacques Audiard, it’s a gritty crime drama that also happens to be a musical.
Saldaña stars in the Netflix film as Rita, a worn-down Mexico City lawyer who becomes the personal fixer for the former drug lord Emilia Pérez (Karla Sofía Gascón). A bargain is struck: If Rita can work in secret to help Emilia undergo genderconfirmation surgery, she’ll be financially compensated beyond her wildest dreams. But even as Rita gains entry to the highest echelons of society, she still carries a resentment that comes to a head with “El Mal,” a scorching song-and-dance number in which she excoriates the hypocritical rich at a charity gala.
That sequence is more than just the film’s highlight: It’s a three-minute clip reel that puts everything Saldaña is capable of on display, including her athletic gift for transmuting her characters’ moods into motion. The performance is so potent that she is almost certain to score her first Oscar nomination; in fact, many consider her to be the current supporting-actress front-runner.
This is a significant swerve for Saldaña, who has often wondered, despite her success, if she is truly seen and appreciated for what she can do.
Although “Emilia Pérez” is far from traditional, it does at least present Saldaña as something closer to who she really is, without the trappings of special effects and alien makeup. Receiving awards attention for that performance, which is primarily delivered in her native Spanish, has been heady.
“I keep reminding myself that no matter what happens, everything about ‘Emilia Pérez’ was special,” she said. “I was doing it for me, and for a long time, I stopped doing things for me.”
Raised in New York and the Dominican Republic, Saldaña hustled to make her mark as an actress, breaking through in smaller films like “Center Stage” and “Crossroads” before ascending to the female lead of giant sci-fi spectaculars. “I’m so grateful, but I had to sacrifice so many things,” she said.
Now that she has hit her mid-40s, Saldaña has been taking a clear look at the highs, lows and compromises that have propelled her to this point. For as bruising as her industry can be, she knows that sometimes she has been the one holding herself back. She hopes after “Emilia Pérez,” that will finally
change.
For the last decade, as Saldaña juggled obligations to “Avatar,” “Star Trek” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” she feared that she might have cut herself off from working on other kinds of films. Still, the combined might of all those sci-fi franchises gave her something awfully rare in Hollywood: job security.
“At least I knew I had these things coming up that were going to keep me always working,” she said. “The idea was, ‘Oh, I just don’t want people to forget about me.’”
So she committed, filming sequel after sequel. After five years, though, something began to wear her down. It wasn’t burnout. It wasn’t even the fear of typecasting. It was the feeling that she had peaked.
“When you are a part of projects that are so big and they become so successful, yes, you reap the benefits of it and you are grateful,” she said. “But there is a part of me as an artist that just stopped growing and accepting challenges.”
In 2022, just after she finished shooting the third “Guardians of the Galaxy” film, Audiard asked to meet with her on a video call to discuss playing Rita in “Emilia Pérez.” She had long been a fan of the French director, who was best known for intense character dramas like “A Prophet” and “Rust and Bone.” Still, she was certain she had no shot at winning the role.
After all, why would Audiard cast her? Rita was scripted as a Mexican woman in her 20s and would require extensive singing — on paper, she was all wrong for it.
She wanted to back out of the meeting. Her husband, filmmaker Marco Perego-Saldaña, urged her not to. “Don’t you want to work with Jacques Audiard?” he asked.
“It would be a dream,” she said.
“Then dream,” he told her.
Audiard was willing to rewrite the role to suit Saldaña, but he wanted to shoot the film in September 2022, when she was supposed to begin filming the first season of “Lioness,” a series that “Yellowstone” showrunner Taylor Sheridan had pursued Saldaña to star in. That obligation, plus an extensive press tour for “Avatar: The Way of Water,” meant she couldn’t take on a new project until deep into 2023.
Saldaña figured this was the end of her dream. Instead, Audiard decided to wait for her, pushing the production a full
year. “Even now, I have a hard time understanding that,” she said. All she knew was that somehow, she had convinced Audiard to place his faith in her. And if he believed in her, she had better start believing in herself.
Once she made her way to Paris and dove deeply into dance practice, acting rehearsals and vocal training, the thing that surprised her most was how much Audiard continued to seek her perspective on Rita, encouraging her to pull from her own life and experiences to play a woman who often feels overlooked and undervalued.
She likened the collaborative experience to working with James Cameron on her biggest franchise. “It felt like an experiment where we were finding things as we went, and that’s how the first ‘Avatar’ was shot,” she said. “Ever since then, I’ve been searching for that high again of being with a seasoned, prolific director and having the director look at you going, ‘I don’t know, what do you think?’”
When “Emilia Pérez” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, it took time for Saldaña to wrap her head around the acclaim. It was difficult to snap in and realize that much of the applause was meant for her. Although she couldn’t attend the festival’s awards ceremony in person, as she had already flown back from France to Texas to shoot “Lioness,” she was watching the online livestream when it was announced that the best actress prize would be shared by Saldaña and her co-stars Gascon, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz.
That was a prospect she hadn’t dared to imagine. She initially felt bashful about displaying her Cannes trophy until her husband insisted that she had worked too long and hard to continue shrugging off her accomplishments.
“It took me this long to admit that yes, I do want people’s approval,” she said. “An artist doesn’t just make art to hide it in their closet for themselves. You make art to share in these accolades and even though you say you don’t want them, come on, just throw me a compliment every now and then. It’s that thing of me always asking the universe, do I matter? Does what I’m doing matter?”

Follow the lights to Miami’s hot new neighborhoods
By AMY TARA KOCH
While much of Miami is about the shiny and new, two of the city’s once run-down neighborhoods have gained new energy by repurposing dilapidated buildings as hotels, restaurants and shops, all locally owned and delightfully devoid of name-brand glitz.
MiMo (an acronym for Miami Modern) refers to Biscayne Boulevard between Northeast 50th Street and Northeast 77th Street, an area filled with 1950s-era motels.
Nearby, just north of Wynwood and the Design District, is Little River, named for its proximity to one of Miami’s only natural rivers, where shuttered warehouses and strip malls are the backdrop for artsy businesses and some of the city’s most exciting restaurants.
Here is a guide to exploring both neighborhoods.

Little River
For artists and entrepreneurs, a neglected neighborhood with cheap rent is a form of fairy dust. Cool artist enclaves soon attract restaurants and retail. That’s what has happened in Little River, where a local real estate developer began buying up the grid of gritty warehouses in the predominantly Haitian neighborhood. Gentrification may follow, but for now, the area blooms with tropical fauna and the kind of commerce that defines Miami as a hot spot.
Restaurants
Imperial Moto Cafe, tricked out with gleaming vintage Harley-Davidsons and distressed leather seating, made Little River a prime destination when it opened in 2016. It’s still where locals and a cross section of cycle and car enthusiasts gather for sustainably farmed, Miami-roasted coffee.

La Natural, a 40-seat space, is laser-focused on “neoNeopolitan” pizza and natural wine, which has earned it three Michelin Bib Gourmands (an award that denotes value for money) since it opened in 2020. Whitewashed walls and rustic ceramics set the stage for sourdough-started, cold-fermented pies. Minimalintervention wines complement the pizza and vegetable-forward small plates (prices range from $12 to $26).
In 2023, restaurateur Alvaro Perez Miranda, who spent 15 years in Tokyo, changed the omakase game in Miami with Ogawa (which means Little River in Japanese), which has just 11 counter seats and an outdoor garden that maintains its Zen even when the hourly cargo train rumbles by. Ogawa recently won a Michelin star, and many of the 19 or so courses (really, each a mouthful), such as vinegar-and-egg-yolk-flecked spiny king crab, mirin-glazed monkfish liver and caviar atop swordtip squid, involve watching chef Masayuki Komatsu hand-paint soy sauce, grate wasabi and meti-

Sunny’s Steakhouse, a beloved pandemic pop-up known for parties under its twinkle-light-covered banyan tree, has become a permanent restaurant, delighting legions of local movers, shakers and their nattily dressed crews drawn to the distressed palm tree mirrored screens, whimsical martini-filled elephant ice buckets and “grandma fabulous” touches like mismatched serving platters. The showpiece on the menu is a 30-ounce steak cooked over live fire. But there are plenty of other proteins, along with pasta and an expansive raw bar that can be mixed with charcuterie plates with star fruit mostarda for a satisfying meal (entrees are $24 to $260 for the steak, which serves up to four people; pastas are about $25; and raw bar and charcuterie plates are about $20 for most items).

The Citadel is a stepped-up food hall with 14 vendors where you can score bites including churros or an all-day breakfast burrito at Gueritos ($12), a heaping portion of housemade cacio e pepe at Borti Pasta Bar ($18) and knock-your-socks-off affogato at Vice City Bean ($6.50). The rooftop’s Key West-inspired bar with $15 frozen cocktails and snacks from the food
(honey jerk chicken bowl, $18; burgers, $8; shrimp tacos, $11) make it a popular local perch.
Shopping and art
Carolina K’s boutique feels like gallivanting through remote Latin America and India via heritage textiles from Argentine designer Carolina Kleinman, whose embroidered pillows and ottomans, woven hats, swimwear and fantastical silk pajamas are produced in collaboration with artisans whose story is printed on each tag (pajama sets, $249 to $325; pillows start at $180; ottomans, $1,339 to $1,890; hats, $315 to $550).
Mids Market is a deal finder’s paradise for reasonably priced secondhand clothing; the average price hovers around $30. Garments are spread over 12,000 square feet and cleverly divided into categories (music, TV and movie; college and pro sports; and more) and washed so the air is not suffused with thrift store funk. There is also a vinyl listening lounge, a “rework station” (sewing machine and fabric shears to cut/fray/embellish purchases) and community programming.
Contemporary galleries are stippled throughout the neighborhood, including Primary, Homework and Dot Fiftyone, all showcasing edgy, boundary-pushing work, and a printmaking studio called Miami Paper & Printing Museum, which holds bookbinding and pattern block printing classes. The neighborhood’s creative footprint will expand when the 40-year-old visual arts nonprofit Oolite Arts, which provides resources to local artists, opens its new campus (set for 2026) in a complex of five converted warehouses designed by architecture firm Barozzi Veiga.
MiMo
Lined with royal palms and bordered by the ritzy communities of Belle Meade, Bayside, Morningside and Palm Grove, the 27 blocks of Biscayne Boulevard from Northeast 79th Street to the edge of downtown were once a welcome-to-Miami mat, where dozens of “subtropical modernist” motels with neon signs beckoned to motorists.
The neighborhood is walkable and, because of restrictions on building heights, devoid of soaring condos and office towers. Playful hallmarks of the 1950s abound in stucco motels turned into mixed-use spaces and the iconic 35-foot-tall Coppertone Girl sign.
Hotels
The 1970s turned this corridor into a sun-drenched skid row until 2014 when local developer Avra Jain rehabilitated the Vagabond motel and began a cleanup of the area. Now, that kitschy-cool hotel is the linchpin of the district for tourists who appreciate the 42 stylish, reasonably priced rooms (starting at
sandwiches, $10 to $16.)
Other casual restaurants: Uptown 66, a shack with outdoor seating selling tacos al pastor and other Mexican street food (tacos $5; burritos, $14); La Social, a bright pink indooroutdoor cafe for protein-packed salads and pastries like mini s’mores and coconut dulce de leche cakes (salads, $12 to $20; cakes, $8.50); and Caracas Bakery for sweet, ham-filled cachitos, or Venezuelan breakfast pastries ($5), and various toasts (such as lamb sausage and soft scrambled eggs, $19) made on the bakery’s crusty sourdough bread.
Shopping
All over Miami, there are scores of vintage shops with hohum merchandise and sky-high prices. Fly Boutique, run for 25 years by husband-and-wife team Jean Marie and Maximiliano De Bernardi, has neither. Old-school Lee denim and no-name silk blouses (from $20) hang opposite contemporary Dolce & Gabbana leather jackets, Missoni sweaters (from $200) and slinky, party-ready dresses (from $150). Inside vitrines, Gucci belts from the ’80s and Louis Vuitton bags beckon. De Bernardi’s vintage furniture finds are also offered at the shop.
$179) and locals who enjoy the bar next to the lushly landscaped pool.
Another renovated gem is the New Yorker, designed by Norman Giller, the architect behind the Carillon Hotel and the Standard in Miami Beach, as well as the futuristic Miami Beach band shell. The 51 rooms are cheap and cheery (starting at $100), with teal-colored walls and leafy grounds featuring a pool and a firepit. Over at the Biscayne, the 53 updated rooms (starting at $130) have modern finishes and crisp new bedding.
Restaurants
Trout-roe-topped latkes? Shrimp and grits? Duroc pork chop with dirty rice? At Blue Collar, the neighborhood’s go-to spot for comfort food (especially at happy hour for half-price cocktails and $9 Buffalo wings on the patio), chef Danny Serfer serves a decidedly anti-small-plates menu that mixes Southern heartiness with Jewish classics and dishes that speak to Miami’s Caribbean culture. The food may read casual, but the moody interior is glamorous. (At lunch, salads are $15; sandwiches, $20. Dinner entrees start at $27.)
The weekend scene outside teensy El Bagel is a snapshot of MiMo: young families, hungover bros, Gen Z-ers, and carb-loving 40- and 50-somethings all diving into their handrolled, long-fermented sourdough bagels while dozens wait in line. Worth the wait? Yes, definitely. (Bagel with schmear, $6.50;
Legion Park, which backs onto Biscayne Bay, morphs into a farmers’ market on Saturdays, with 40 vendors selling foods as varied as grown-in-Miami produce, fresh eggs, arepas, ceviche, barbecue and homemade yogurts. Eat and tap into the free yoga under the Spanish moss-draped trees. Then meander back in time on a walk through the surrounding streets lined with midcentury bungalows and Mediterranean Revival houses.

The animal celebrities who surprised, soothed and screamed at us in 2024
By EMILY ANTHES
Every year has its breakout stars, and 2024 yielded a bumper crop: Glen Powell, Chappell Roan, Pommel Horse Guy.
But only one had a body that was routinely compared to a potato. She was slippery; she was feisty; she was named after a type of pork meatball. She was, of course, Moo Deng, the pygmy hippo who rocketed to fame so fast that at just 2 months old she inspired a character on “Saturday Night Live.”
She wasn’t the only nonhuman newsmaker this year. Indeed, 2024 was the year that animals seemed to do it all, becoming A-list celebrities, political weapons and cautionary tales. Along the way, they often served as welcome distractions from the messy human world — but also clear reflections of it.
Here is a look at the creatures that broke the internet (and sometimes our hearts) in 2024.
The social media sensations
It’s a tale as old as time: Baby zoo animal is born; baby zoo animal is posted online; baby zoo animal goes viral. This year, an enormous king penguin chick named Pesto — a 50-pound tower of downy brown fluff at the Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium, in Australia — became a textbook case.
But Moo Deng, who was born at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand, seemed to tap into something deeper. Sure, she was adorable. But when she wasn’t sleeping (which was often), she seemed perpetually peeved, throwing tantrums, biting her keepers and appearing to scream silently. Online, she was hailed as “ungovernable” and even portrayed as an aspirational figure for women — with her unapologetic attitude and enviably dewy skin.
The marine marvels
Moo Deng may have been a handful, but at least there was just one of her. In Oklahoma, the Clifford family discovered that its new pet octopus, Terrance, had not only been misidentified as a male but had also laid 50 fertilized eggs. The family attracted a large online audience as it chronicled its herculean efforts to keep the fragile hatchlings alive.
Still, when it came to surprises, Terrance had nothing on Charlotte, a stingray who appeared to have become pregnant despite the absence of male rays in her tank at the Aquarium & Shark Lab in North Carolina.
The aquarium floated two possible explanations. The first was parthenogenesis, a well-documented phenomenon in which the eggs of some species can develop into viable embryos without being fertilized by sperm. The second was that Charlotte had mated with one of the male sharks that shared her tank and was now pregnant with “a whole new species.”
The shark-mating theory was “obviously, preposterously silly,” David Shiffman, a marine conservation biologist, said. “Sharks and rays are separated by as many years of evolution as humans and snakes. If a human tried to mate with a snake, it would not result in a human-snake hybrid.”
An outpouring of support for Flaco in Central Park in New York on March 3, 2024. Moo Deng the pygmy hippo, Flaco the escaped eagle-owl, Charlotte the maybe-pregnant stingray — they distracted us from the messy human world but were also clear reflections of it. (Michelle V. Agins/The New York Times)
But the idea set off a media frenzy. After months had passed with no signs of stingray pups, the aquarium announced that Charlotte had “developed a rare reproductive disease,” then that she was “no longer pregnant” and then that she had died.
In an email, Brenda Ramer, who runs the aquarium, said that a post-mortem examination had confirmed the reproductive disease, but she did not provide additional details or answer questions about whether Charlotte had ever actually been pregnant. (Some experts have speculated that Charlotte may have had a disease that mimicked the signs of pregnancy.)
The political animals
Not since Mitt Romney came under fire for transporting his dog in a kennel on the roof of his car have pets earned so much media coverage during a presidential race.
Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota saw her vice presidential prospects dim when she boasted about shooting and killing her misbehaving young dog. Vice President-elect JD
Vance was assailed for dismissing Democrats as “childless cat ladies.” In a nationally televised debate, President-elect Donald Trump repeated false claims that immigrants were stealing and eating pets. And Republicans turned a pet squirrel named P’Nut, who had been euthanized by New York state officials, into an avatar of government overreach.
If there was a coherent political message here, it was difficult to discern. But one through line was that the United States is, by and large, a nation that loves its pets. Even for Trump — a rare pet-less president — Noem’s story seemed to cross “this invisible boundary,” said Clive Wynne, a canine-behavior expert at Arizona State University.
And then there was Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who confessed to depositing a dead bear cub in New York City’s Central Park and who was said to have used a chain saw to decapitate a dead whale. (Kennedy then supposedly strapped the whale head to the top of his car and drove it home in a gruesome, cetacean version of the Romney affair.)
The lessons of these stories remain elusive. “What historical or cultural trend can we connect it to?” Wynne asked. “Just the vastly privileged doing vastly stupid things.”
The borderline wild
In a world transformed by humans, the line between captive animals and wild ones can be as fuzzy as the creatures that occupy that awkward middle ground. Take Nibi, a beaver who was found alone in the wild when she was far too young to fend for herself.
At Newhouse Wildlife Rescue, in Massachusetts, Nibi developed a taste for pistachios, a fondness for humans and an apparent contempt for others of her own kind. (In one video, she appears to be building a dam in the doorway of the rescue’s rehab room to keep another young beaver at bay.)
The rescue eventually deemed her both a “diva” and “unreleasable,” so ill-suited for life in the wild that it went to court when a state agency ordered her release. The governor ultimately intervened, allowing Nibi to remain at the rescue.
In New York City, the life of a Eurasian eagle-owl named Flaco took the opposite trajectory when he escaped from the Central Park Zoo. Flaco had lived his entire life in captivity, but he proved to be an adept predator, doing his part to keep the city’s rat population in check.
In February, after a year on the lam, Flaco died. The immediate cause appeared to be a building collision, but a necropsy revealed that Flaco also had dangerously high levels of toxic rodenticides in his system. These compounds, which are widely used for rat control, pose a well-known threat to birds of prey.
This fall, the City Council passed a bill calling for a pilot test of rodent birth control, which may prove to be a safer alternative. It became known as Flaco’s law.
“The outcry that happened after his death — it was like that of a beloved human figure,” said Rita McMahon, director of the Wild Bird Fund, a local rescue group that responded when Flaco was found gravely injured. “He has a legacy for us and for his fellow creatures.”

Agnes Keleti, world’s oldest Olympic champion, dies at 103
By RICHARD GOLDSTEIN
Growing up in a Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary, Agnes Keleti was immersed in sports and the world of music. She took gymnastics lessons, swam and played the cello.
Then darkness descended.
Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, marking the start of World War II in Europe. The Nazis occupied Hungary in 1944 and deported hundreds of thousands of its Jews to death camps, among them Keleti’s father, Ferenc Klein, who died at Auschwitz.
Using papers she bought that identified her as a Christian girl, Keleti survived the war, working as a maid and a munitions worker. Her mother, Rosza, and her sister, Vera, also survived.
When the war ended, Keleti began rebuilding her life and turned once more to gymnastics.
Competing in her 30s against far younger athletes, she won a total of five gold, three silver and two bronze medals at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki and the 1956 Games in Melbourne, Australia. She settled in Israel in 1957, played a major role in building its gymnastics programs and received its highest honor for a civilian, the Israel Prize, in 2017.
Spry enough to do leg splits into her 90s, Keleti expressed pride in influencing young people to take up gymnastics and to embrace physical fitness.
“The past? Let’s talk about the future,” she told The Associated Press on the eve of her 99th birthday in January 2020. “That’s what should be beautiful.”
At 103, Keleti was the oldest Olympic champion when she died early Thursday in a hospital in Budapest, having returned to the city in her last years.
Her death was announced by the Hungarian Olympic Committee on its website.
She had been in the hospital with heart problems and breathing problems for several days, according to Adam Jusztin, the chair of the Jewish sports organization Maccabi Hungary and a friend of Keleti’s.
Agnes Keleti was born Jan. 9, 1921, in Budapest. She graduated from high school in 1939, but because of admissions quotas for Jews, she could not attend a university. In 1941, she was expelled from her athletic club in Budapest along with the other “nonAryans.” Then came the years of shielding her Jewish identity.
At the war’s end, Keleti resumed her gymnastics pursuits, winning her first Hungarian championship in 1946. She was selected for Hungary’s gymnastics team for the 1948 London Olympics, after the two previous Games were canceled because of the war, but was sidelined by an injury shortly before the competition got underway.
Keleti won a gold medal in the floor exercise at the Helsinki Games, a silver in the team competition and two bronze medals for the uneven bars and the team portable apparatus event. She won four golds in Melbourne — for the balance beam, floor exercise, uneven bars and the team portable apparatus — and won silver for the individual allaround and the team competition.
Israel in 1957. There, she trained gymnasts at the Wingate Institute for Physical Education and Sport in Netanya and coached the Israeli national women’s gymnastics team.
“There was a lot of anti-Semitism” in Hungary of the Cold War years, Keleti told The Jewish Telegraphic Agency in 2018.
“It wasn’t a good atmosphere to be Jewish,” she said, “even for a star athlete.”
Keleti was training in Australia in the run-up to the 1956 Olympics when the Soviet Union crushed an anticommunist rebellion in Hungary, and was among nearly 50 Hungarian athletes who pursued asylum in Australia after the Games. She immigrated to
At her death, Keleti’s five gold medals in women’s gymnastics tied her with Polina Astakhova of the Soviet Union and Nadia Comaneci of Romania for fourth place on the Olympic list, behind Larisa Latynina of the Soviet Union, who won nine golds, and Vera Caslavska of Czechoslovakia and Simone Biles of the United States, both with seven.
(Keleti’s total of 10 medals, as listed by the International Olympic Committee, does not include a silver she received as a member of Hungary’s 1948 Olympics squad, which finished second in the team competition; she did not compete in those Games because of her injury.)
Keleti was inducted into the Interna-
tional Women’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 and the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2002. She was named one of Hungary’s 12 “Athletes of the Nation” in 2004, having won her country’s all-around gymnastics championship 10 times in addition to her Olympic exploits.
Her Israel Prize citation said she was “one of the originators of artistic gymnastics in Israel and led the sport for over 50 years.”
“For me, sports was really just a way to see the world,” Keleti told the AP in 2012.
“Maybe that’s why I never got nervous. People said they got scared before competitions. That never happened to me. Gymnastics was just a part of my life.”
Keleti’s survivors include her sons, Daniel and Rafael, from her marriage in 1959 to Robert Biro, a former Hungarian physical education teacher whom she had met in Israel. He died before her. Her first marriage, to Istvan Sarkany, ended in divorce in 1950.
Keleti was in her early 40s when she twice became a mother.
“They didn’t believe I could win a gold medal when I was 35 and I won four,” she was quoted as saying in “Nike Is a Goddess: The History of Women in Sports” (1998). She added, “My children were just two more gold medals.”
