The island Department of Health alerted the public Tuesday after the Public Health Laboratory detected the Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria and total coliforms in a recreational facility in San Juan.
The agency issued the alert to prevent situations in aquatic facilities noting that improperly treated swimming pools, common in the summer season, can pose a public health risk, especially for children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
“If illness or symptoms related to ingesting contaminated food or water are suspected, you should seek immediate medical attention,” a Health Department release said. “Likewise, it is important to take the necessary precautionary measures to prevent the spread and contagion of diseases.”
“Given this situation, we call on all visitors to water parks or public pools to be alert if they present some of these symptoms. You must be evaluated by a health provider and receive medical attention immediately,” said the island’s main epidemiology officer, Melissa Marzán, after calling on the operators or administrators of the facilities to maintain healthy cleanliness of the areas to guarantee the safety of all visitors.
E. coli is a microorganism commonly present in the intestines of humans and animals. It may be present in bodies of water or soil. Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, some can cause serious illness, especially
when ingested in large amounts.
Total coliforms, meanwhile, are a group of bacteria found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals, including humans. Total coliforms in water or food may indicate possible fecal contamination. They may be associated with foodborne illness and contaminated water.
Environmental health inspectors will continue to visit parks and pools to assess water quality. If they detect unsanitary conditions, they will order the temporary closure of the facility to carry out exhaustive cleaning and disinfection of the affected areas.
Marzán said the recommendations for avoiding infection or spread of bacteria associated with public pools are: do not swallow pool water, shower before entering a pool, give children breaks to go to the bathroom, and shower with soap and water once out of the pool.
Police were investigating a triple homicide that reportedly occurred in the early hours of Tuesday in Carolina.
The murders took place in the Campeche neighborhood of the Martín González sector, near the PR-66 Expressway.
According to preliminary information, the victims were three men with multiple gunshot wounds in a low-traffic area of the sector.
Police found multiple bullet casings of different calibers at the scene.
Authorities said no motive behind the slayings has been established.
Puerto Rico environmental groups should sue the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the U.S. commonwealth and not in the District of Columbia (D.C.) because there are no ties to D.C., the federal agency said in a recent court document.
The environmental groups, led by the Comité Dialogo Ambiental (Environmental Dialogue Committee), sued FEMA in D.C. earlier this year, arguing that the federal agency violated the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) while developing its Puerto Rico Fossil Grid Entrenchment Project and the Puerto Rico Public Facilities Project. The projects were aimed at rebuilding the island electrical grid after hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. A few years later, Hurricane Fiona further damaged the electrical system.
The environmental groups in the case, Comité Dialogo Ambiental et al. v FEMA et al, claim the programmatic environmental assessments (PEAs) that FEMA developed violated NEPA as the federal agency didn’t consider using more resilient systems, such as solar
or microgrids, in the rebuilding. The groups are asking for a declaration that the PEAs violated NEPA and for an order for FEMA to prepare an environmental impact statement. FEMA argued on July 21 that the U.S. District Court in D.C.
Many municipalities hold local festivals every year, a tradition that dates back to the Spanish colonization of Puerto Rico centuries ago. Although the festivities have a Catholic background to them; many people who aren’t Catholics also take part in them.
Cayey is no exception to the celebration of these annual events. The town is working extra-hard to get things done for this year’s festivities, which are particularly exciting residents because the town is also celebrating a milestone birthday and will celebrate the festivities in honor of Mother Mary as a Marian dedication.
“This year is very special, because we are honoring the very first residents of Cayey, who worked really hard 250 years ago for
the creation of this city, which now is home to more than 40,000 residents,” said one of the festival organizers.
This year’s festivities are slated to begin Tuesday, Aug. 15 and will end on Sunday, Aug. 20 with an extensive musical, sports and cultural agenda. Soon the details will be released through social media regarding the musical and artistic offerings.
However, it has already been confirmed that the well-known Golden Coquí 8K road race will take place on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 5 p.m., when racers will take their marks at Pedro Montañez Municipal Stadium. Registration will be $15 and there will be prizes awarded by category. The race will be quite inclusive in terms of age range; there will be categories from the ages of 20 to 29 years of age as well as a category that goes up to 70 years or older.
Prizes will vary in terms of the category, in a spirit of fairness. There will also be a special category for residents with special needs and a wheelchair category as well.
Earlier in the day, at 2 p.m. the children and teen race will take place. Unlike the adult
was not an appropriate venue because all alleged wrongdoing raised by the environmental groups occurred in Puerto Rico, and there were no strong ties to D.C. other than it being the location of FEMA’s headquarters.
“This District is not the appropriate venue for Plaintiffs’ claims, which arise out of agency actions that occurred in Puerto Rico,” a lawyer for FEMA said. “Plaintiffs challenge two Programmatic Environmental Assessments (PEAs) and their corresponding Findings of No Significant Impact (FONSIs) that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Both PEAs and FONSIs were developed and issued in Puerto Rico and cover activities that will occur solely in Puerto Rico.”
FEMA said the environmental groups do not appear to dispute that they could have filed suit in the District of Puerto Rico. “Instead, they grasp at straws to connect their claims to this District,” the lawyer said. “The Court, however, must guard against the danger that a plaintiff might manufacture venue in the District of Columbia.”
The environmental groups say that D.C. is the appropriate venue because officials who earmarked FEMA funds are in Washington and former President Trump played a role in the case, among other reasons.
race, registration for this one is free. Categories range from ages 4 and 5 to ages 18 and 19. The event will raise funds for The Athletics Club of Cayey.
The classic coronation ceremony will take place a day before on Saturday, Aug. 19. Registration will be at 1 p.m. and grouping will begin at 4 p.m. The parade will start at 4:30 p.m. from the public transport terminal
“Leonides ‘Johnny’ Toledo.” The event will also have multiple prizes for all resident queens of Cayey. There will also be prizes for queens from other towns.
Cayey is known for its dance groups and parade floats, which is part of why so many people from around the island come to the festivities. The best youth queen representation will be chosen at the end of the event.
Project Angels is a non-profit community project in Yabucoa dedicated to helping the people of various communities in Yabucoa. Located in a former school in the Calabasas neighborhood, the nonprofit on Tuesday celebrated its 5th anniversary serving the community.
“This was originally an initiative of the Catholic Church to work with the community situations in a more organized way,” said William Bermúdez, director of Project Angels and coordinator of the anniversary event. “Our first project was related to psychologists and social workers, which was a success. When this school closed, we rescued it and turned it into a community service center and also our headquarters.”
The Project Angels headquarters has a significant number of areas that were made specifically for community services, such as a bazaar, where many people donate clothing that is then sold for no more than 5$. The money the bazaar makes is used for other charity works. The bazaar hasn’t only been used to impact communities in Yabucoa, but also communities outside of Puerto Rico. Husband and wife Ángel Sorrilla and Katherine Jiménez personally buy clothes in bulk and send two to three boxes of clothes at a time to towns in the Dominican Republic.
“We try to stay in contact with communities from the Republic and we try our best to send the clothing to charities specifically,” Jiménez told the STAR. “Once the clothes are in the Republic, we can redirect the clothing boxes to destinations where they are needed the most. We try our best to stay in contact with people who own charities and people we know in the Dominican Republic.”
In addition to the bazaar, Project Angels was able to build a community events center where people can host activities at a relatively low rental cost of $250.
“This community did not have a community activity center,” Bermúdez told the STAR. “With our efforts we were able to make a community activity center with air conditioner, tables, chairs, anything needed to host an event, whether it’s an anniversary party, birthday or any other event. This gives the community access to hosting events in their own community.”
Project Angels has also collaborated with several other organizations, one of them being the Comprehensive Women’s Foundation (Fundación Mujer Integral), an organization that has for years been providing courses for women.
“During the pandemic we joined forces with Project Angels because we wanted to reach more women; therefore, we sometimes use the activity room to offer different courses, some of which include women’s hygiene and even exercise routines during the pandemic,” said the foundation’s founder, Grisselle Fonseca. “We’ve been working with Mr. William Bermúdez and Project Angels for over two years providing

an educational project for women from all over the Calabaza community.”
Another service provided by the organization is the Cybercafe, which even though it was primarily intended for children and young people, many adults use it due to the fact that some people don’t have an internet connection in their home. Certain tasks that require an internet connection can be performed in the Cybercafe, which has air conditioning and free Wi-Fi.
“I would say the Cybercafe will prove quite useful when students get back to school and it’ll continue to be of good use for adults who require internet services,” Bermúdez noted.
The Cybercafe is still very much a work in progress, but even at 50% capacity it’s still providing services for the community. Bermúdez added that they will continue to work hard to improve its space and services.
The center also has its own fruit and vegetable garden where a variety of fruits and vegetables are grown and then given out to the community once harvested.
In addition to the garden, Bermúdez also talked about the construction of a community kitchen at the headquarters.
“Back when Hurricane Maria happened, one of our biggest concerns was the fact that we didn’t have space to cook for people who didn’t have access to warm food,” he said. “However, thanks to a donation provided by the municipality of Yabucoa, we were able to build a community kitchen, which has storage space large enough to store food for at least 500 people, without counting the stoves, refrigerators and a power generator that was donated directly by the mayor of Yabucoa.”
Mayor Rafael Surillo Ruiz, who also participated in the
event, told the STAR that “for us here in Yabucoa, Project Angels represents what we all should aspire to be.”
“After Hurricane Maria in 2017, we learned the importance of community organization,” he said. “Community groups were the protagonists during Hurricane Maria, they took on the role that the state should’ve taken on. The coordinator of this event and member of Project Angels, William Bermúdez, also works with us in the municipal administration. What we want to achieve with this is to replicate this concept in other communities here in Yabucoa.”
The event started at 9 a.m., when those in attendance were able to enjoy a live, on-site broadcast of the radio show from the station Victoria 840, “Ponte Al día con Linda Michelle.” At noon, a mass was led by Father Miguel Ángel Ramírez, and at 1 p.m. the community celebration began with plenty of food for lunch and cake for dessert. Fried food such as bacalaitos and empanadillas were among many other food items on sale, all to raise funds for the charity.
Many artisans gathered at the event as well to sell their handmade products, as is the practice at all Project Angel events.
Apart from the mayor, another political figure also took part in the event, Pastor Ana N. Henríquez, the gubernatorial candidate from Project Dignity who was among those interviewed on the radio show.
“Project Angels is a precious project to me because of how much they help the people in need,” Henríquez told the STAR. “The more we promote things like this, the better for the community. We are aspiring to lead the people of Puerto Rico from La Fortaleza in 2024 with these values in mind.”
The Atlantino company is organizing a series of events to commemorate 125 years of baseball in Puerto Rico, including Puerto Rico Day today at Comerica Park in Detroit.
The events are sponsored by the Puerto Rico Convention District Authority.
“This is a special day to celebrate Puerto Rico and its rich history in baseball,” an Atlantino representative said. “We are excited to offer a unique experience for fans in Detroit.”
The day will include music and videos alluding to Puerto Rico, the first pitch delivered by a representative of the island, and a pre-game presentation on the field in honor of Puerto Rican players, coaches and managers. In addition, a table will be set up with gifts and promotions televised through Bally Sports.
Honorees will include Detroit Tigers players Javier Báez, Alex Lange and Riley Greene, and pitching coach Juan Nieves, all of whom will receive special recognition during the presentation on the field. The event will be held before today’s game between the Tigers and the Los Angeles Angels scheduled for 6:40 p.m. (Bally Sports network).

González Núñez and Luisa Acevedo Zambrana, the collective bargaining coordinator of the Central Federation of Workers, signed a new collective agreement for the benefit of employees late last week.
“We are pleased to achieve this negotiation for the benefit of our employees,” González Núñez said in a written statement issued on Tuesday.
“We have always been pioneers in the process of setting and improving quality standards in our products and that has been thanks to all our employees,” he added.
The agreement, which is valid for four years, benefits 240 workers in the areas of operations and sales. The
officials noted that it also ensures stability and continuity of processes in the local dairy industry, a key agricultural segment in Puerto Rico.
“Our Union is extremely proud of the signing of this collective bargaining agreement,” Acevedo Zambrana said. “It has been demonstrated that the growth of a company occurs in a solid way when that company takes care of its workforce, providing better wages and economic benefits.”
Vaquería Tres Monjitas, the only fresh milk processing plant backed with purely Puerto Rican capital, employs about 500 people in its plant and offices in Hato Rey and warehouses in Mayagüez, Arecibo and Ponce. In addition to producing, packaging and distributing fresh milk and dairy products, it also distributes products for other companies.
By THE STAR STAFFResident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón announced Tuesday that several commonwealth agencies, nonprofit organizations, universities and municipalities
in Puerto Rico will receive over $13.2 million in federal funds.
The funds will be used for public security, natural disaster preparedness, research and improvements. Funding comes from the federal departments of Homeland Security, Agriculture (Rural Development mission area) and Labor, and the National Science Foundation.
The Department of Homeland Security will provide $11.9 million to strengthen port, border, disaster preparedness and counterterrorism security in Puerto Rico. An additional $1.2 million from other agencies will be allocated to promote research, training and business assistance projects in rural areas.
* The allocations break down as follows:
* The Department of Public Safety of Puerto Rico will receive $4.8 million for the implementation of national security strategies. In addition, 13 municipalities and the United Rapid Action Forces Unit of the Puerto Rico Police Bureau will receive a total of $1.7 million to improve cooperation and coordination between state and federal security agencies.
* For the first time, three Jewish nonprofit organizations in Puerto Rico will receive funding to strengthen their facilities and security. Chabad Lubavitch of Puerto Rico will receive a total of $450,000, the Jewish Community Center of Puerto Rico Inc. will receive $70,000 and Temple Beth
Shalom $150,000.
* The island Public Safety Department also will receive $4.7 million under the Emergency Management Performance Grant, which supports governments in preparing for hazards related to natural disasters and emergencies. Meanwhile, Moran Towing San Juan will receive $268,000 to strengthen its maritime security facilities and operations.
The IRS said earlier this week it would immediately curb the practice of sending agents to make surprise visits to homes and businesses, scaling back a policy that for decades was central to its efforts to collect unpaid taxes amid political backlash and increasing threats to its employees.
The change comes as the IRS embarks on a multibilliondollar modernization project that aims to upgrade technology, ramp up enforcement of the tax code and improve customer service. It also coincides with increased scrutiny of the tax collection agency, which has faced criticism from Republicans over perceptions of political bias and from taxpayers who claim that its tactics are overly aggressive.
“We are taking a fresh look at how the IRS operates to better serve taxpayers and the nation, and making this change is a common-sense step,” Daniel Werfel, the IRS commissioner, said in a statement. “Changing this long-standing procedure will increase confidence in our tax administration work and improve overall safety for taxpayers and IRS employees.”
Werfel, in remarks to reporters, portrayed the new approach as part of the agency’s transformation, which aims to use IRS resources more efficiently and work more constructively with taxpayers. Werfel, who has been in the job for four months, said he wanted to end the public perception of IRS employees going door to door to collect taxes.
The agency has been trying to project a more customerfocused approach to taxpayers while Republicans have been fanning fears that the tax collector is hiring an army of 87,000 new agents to shake down small businesses and the middle class. The antipathy toward the IRS has made the work of its agents more dangerous; last year, the agency initiated a comprehensive security review after misinformation and false postings on social media led to threats directed at employees.
The IRS said Monday that unannounced visits would continue only in a few “unique” circumstances and that they would generally be replaced with mailed letters to schedule meetings. Werfel said the in-person visits were generally used to collect tax debts of more than $100,000 and that they were employed to demonstrate that the agency was closely tracking the cases of taxpayers. Under the new system, taxpayers who ignore written correspondences from the IRS could eventually face penalties or liens on their property.
The agency typically makes tens of thousands of unannounced visits to households and businesses each year and will continue to do so only in cases involving summonses and subpoenas or the seizure of assets. Those types of cases usually occur less than a few hundred times per year, the IRS said.
It employs about 2,000 unarmed revenue officers who usually make unannounced visits to discuss taxes owed or missing returns. Sometimes they make visits without warning if they think a business could be falling behind on withheld employment taxes or to collect a debt.
The criminal investigation unit of the IRS, which does employ armed agents that visit homes and businesses, will not be affected by the change of policy for revenue officers.
Republicans have made it a priority to impede the Biden administration’s plans to beef up the IRS with $80 billion that it was given as part of the Inflation Reduction Act last year. They successfully cut $1.4 billion of the agency’s funding in the debt limit legislation that Congress passed in June and reached a deal to claw back another $20 billion as part of the final budget agreement that lawmakers are expected to pass this year.
In recent months, lawmakers and anti-tax groups such as Americans for Tax Reform have been raising questions about unannounced visits by IRS agents. As examples of overreach, they have pointed to a raid in June on a gun shop in Montana — where agents seized personal information of gun owners and buyers — and a visit in April by agents to the Florida offices of investor Jeffrey Gundlach, which was apparently the result of a clerical error.
Werfel suggested that ending unannounced visits was a response to the prevalence of scammers who pose as agents. He said this had created additional anxiety for taxpayers and more stress for revenue officers.
“We have the tools we need to successfully collect revenue without adding stress with unannounced visits,” Werfel said, adding that improved analytics would allow the agency to reach its compliance goals. “The only losers with this change in policy are scammers posing as the IRS.”
The IRS commissioner said he expected that the new
policy would mitigate the concerns that members of Congress had expressed about unannounced visits.
The new policy is also expected to be welcome within the IRS, where revenue officers have expressed growing concern about their safety when making the visits. In some cases, officers have been confronted by hostile taxpayers wielding weapons.
Tony Reardon, the national president of the National Treasury Employees Union, said the decision to halt unannounced field visits was welcome.
“The safety of IRS employees is of paramount importance,” he said, “and this decision will help protect those whose jobs have only grown more dangerous in recent years because of false, inflammatory rhetoric about the agency and its workforce.”
the Capitol, and declaring: “Everybody in there is a disgrace. That entire building is filled with treasonous traitors. Death is the only remedy for what’s in that building.”

In court papers filed before the sentencing in U.S. District Court in Washington, Stager’s lawyers told Judge Rudolph Contreras that their client had, like many Jan. 6 defendants, experienced a traumatic childhood. During his early years, the lawyers wrote, Stager was homeless, sleeping under benches in California and stealing food from stores and dumpsters.
After Stager’s mother abandoned him and his siblings, when he was around the age of 6, he ended up in foster care, the lawyers said.
morning of Jan. 6.
“This decision is one that Mr. Stager will regret for the rest of his life,” the lawyers wrote.
As the crowd moved from Trump’s speech near the White House to the Capitol and grew increasingly violent, “Mr. Stager’s emotional state was in turmoil,” his lawyers wrote. Ultimately, “seeing red,” they said, he picked up a flagpole lying on the ground and went after Miller.
Stager apologized to the officer in a letter submitted with his lawyer’s filing, saying that he did not “have hatred toward law enforcement, let alone for anyone.”
By ALAN FEUERAtruck driver who assaulted a police officer with a flagpole at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was sentenced Monday to 52 months in federal prison.
The attack by the driver, Peter Stager, produced one of the most disturbing images to emerge from the Capitol attack. Stager, 44, of Conway, Arkansas, was captured on video beating the officer, Blake Miller, with the flagpole in a fit of rage as Miller lay facedown in a mob of other rioters with “no means of defending himself,”
prosecutors wrote in court papers.
Stager was one of nine men charged with assaulting Miller and two of his colleagues, Officers Carter Moore and Andrew Wayte, in a 90-second spree of violence that unfolded on the steps outside a tunnel at the Lower West Terrace of the Capitol. Officers who fell victim to attacks in a tunnel on the terrace and on the steps there have repeatedly likened the violence to the hand-to-hand combat of a medieval battle.
After assaulting Miller, prosecutors say, Stager was caught on video pointing at
The lawyers told Contreras that Stager was in Washington on Jan. 6 only because of a scheduling conflict with the dispatch service of his trucking company. After delivering a load of produce to a destination near Washington, the lawyers wrote, he chose not to drive back to Arkansas with an empty truck, realizing he would not make any money and would have to pay for fuel.
Instead, the lawyers said, Stager “decided to make the most of the situation” and attend President Donald Trump’s rally on the Ellipse in Washington on the
Three of Stager’s co-defendants — Justin Jersey, Logan Barnhart and Mason Courson — have also been sentenced on assault charges. Each of them was given a prison term of between three and five years, a relatively modest penalty for cases involving attacks on police.
Other rioters sentenced for assaulting officers have received some of the stiffest penalties of any of the more than 1,000 people charged in connection with the Capitol attack.
A Pennsylvania welder who attacked officers with a chair and then with chemical spray was sentenced in May to more than 14 years in prison. The next month, a California man was given more than 12 years in prison for twice driving a stun gun into the neck of Officer Michael Fanone.
Two women who had been hiking at a Nevada state park were found dead Saturday, park rangers said, as record-breaking heat waves rippled through the region and sent temperatures rising through parts of the western and southwestern United States.
The coroner’s office in Clark County, Nevada, identified the women as Jessica Rhodes, 34, and Diana Matienzo Rivera, 29. State park rangers said that they had
been hiking the Prospect Trail together in the Valley of Fire State Park, a desert area known for its sandstone and limestone outcroppings and rock formations that is about 45 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
Summer temperatures in the park often exceed 100 degrees and can reach 120 degrees, according to park officials.
A group of hikers reported the women missing about 10:30 a.m. after they failed to return to their vehicles Saturday, said Jonathan Brunjes, deputy administrator for Nevada State Parks.
Park rangers conducted a search and, about an hour later, found the body of one of the women on the trail, which stretches 11 miles. The body of the second woman was found about 2 p.m. that day, near a canyon that the trail bisects, leading the rangers to believe that she had gone searching for help.
The coroner’s office said Monday that it was still investigating the cause of death for the two women. Relatives of Rhodes could not immediately be reached. The family of Rivera declined to comment.
Brunjes said that the deaths were possibly linked to heat exhaustion.
“Anytime you’re going hiking you should go extremely early, carry at least a liter of water and wear light-colored clothing,” he said. “We can’t emphasize these things enough.”
The women, Brunjes added, had worn dark-colored clothing and did not seem to have been carrying enough water.

Apersonal chef to the Obama family died over the weekend after he was seen struggling in the water while paddleboarding near the former first family’s home on Martha’s Vineyard, the Massachusetts State Police said earlier this week.
The body of the chef, Tafari Campbell, 45, of Dumfries, Virginia, who was visiting the Vineyard, was found just before 10 a.m. Monday about 100 feet from shore in Edgartown Great Pond in water about 8 feet deep by the Massachusetts Environmental Police. It had deployed sonar from a boat during an hourslong search that began Sunday night and involved several law enforcement agencies.
Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama were not home at the time of the accident, the state police said. An investigation into the death of Campbell, who had worked as a sous chef when the Obamas were in the White House and stayed on with them afterward, is being conducted by the state police and the Edgartown Police Department.
Just before 8 p.m. Sunday, emergency services from Edgartown responded to Edgartown Great Pond near Turkeyland Cove, where the Obama family has a summer home, for a call of “a male paddleboarder who had gone into the water, appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface and then submerged and did not resurface,” the state police said in a statement.
Another paddleboarder was on the pond with him at the time and saw him go under water, police said. The state police, the U.S. Coast Guard and multiple local fire units, including divers, assisted in the search.
After several hours of searching Sunday night, “the operation was paused to allow dive teams, flight crews and other responders to reequip and assess next steps,” the state police said.
Chief Alex Schaeffer of the Edgartown Fire Department told The Vineyard Gazette that island police officers and firefighters had conducted door-to-door searches after Campbell was reported missing, and that firefighters had searched the pond’s shoreline by foot.
In a statement, Barack and Michelle Obama called Campbell “a truly wonderful man” and “a beloved part of our family.”
“When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House — creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together,” they said. “In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter.”
The Obamas said they had asked Campbell to stay on with them as they were getting ready to leave the White House.
“He’s been part of our lives ever since,” they said. “Our hearts are broken that he’s gone.”
According to their statement,
Campbell’s survivors include his wife, Sherise, and twin boys, Xavier and Savin.
The Obamas, longtime summer visitors to Martha’s Vineyard, purchased a secluded 30-acre property on the south shore in 2019 for $11.75 million. Their seven-bedroom, 6,900-square-foot-house fronts Edgartown Great Pond with views of a barrier beach and ocean. The still, brackish, coastal pond has multiple inlets that are popular among recreational boaters, especially among kayakers and paddleboarders hoping to take in a spectacular sunset.

this summer is one of the hottest on record. The past month was the hottest June since scientists began recording global temperatures in 1850, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said last week.
For 10 consecutive days as of Sunday, temperatures in Las Vegas had reached or exceeded 110 degrees, tying a record for the city, the National Weather Service in Las Vegas said. Temperatures
reached a record-breaking 115 degrees in some parts of the city Saturday, prompting the weather service to put all of southern Nevada under an excessive heat warning.
The Southern Nevada Health District, a public health authority for Clark County and other areas in southern Nevada, said in a July 13 statement that there had been seven heat-related deaths reported in the county so far this year. Clark County recorded 152 such deaths in all of last year, with triple-digit temperatures commonly occurring between
June and September in the region.
Last Tuesday, a 71-year-old hiker died from what appeared to be heatrelated causes in Death Valley National Park, California, about 180 miles west of the Valley of Fire, according to the National Park Service. Temperatures there had soared to 121 degrees, the park service said. His death came about two weeks after park authorities found a 65-year-old man dead in his vehicle in the valley, and authorities said “extreme heat” appeared to be the cause.

Yet the name and logo changes were impossible to ignore. By starting to remove the Twitter name, Musk tossed out an entrenched brand that had been around since 2006 — when the company was founded — and that had delighted and frustrated celebrities, politicians, athletes and other users in equal measure. Twitter introduced its blue bird mascot in 2010 and updated it two years later.
Many Twitter users, who have spent years tweeting and building up their presence on the site, appeared alienated by the shift. “Has everybody seen the (eXecrable) new logo?” actor Mark Hamill tweeted Monday, with the hashtag #ByeByeBirdie. Others saw the move as Musk’s latest blow to the site, with some stubbornly saying they would still call the site Twitter and would continue to “tweet.”
When brands become verbs, it’s the “holy grail,” said Mike Proulx, a vice president and research director at Forrester, because it means they have become part of popular culture.
“The app itself has become a cultural phenomenon in all sorts of ways,” he said. “In one fell sweep, Elon Musk has essentially wiped out 15 years of brand value from Twitter and is now essentially starting from scratch.”
By RYAN MAC and TIFFANY HSUFor more than 10 years, Twitter has been recognizable for its blue and white bird logo, which became a symbol of the social network’s unique culture and lexicon. To “tweet” became a verb. A “tweet” referred to a post. “Tweeps” became the moniker for Twitter employees. Late Sunday, Elon Musk began getting rid of it all. The tech billionaire, who bought Twitter last year, renamed the social platform X.com on its website and started replacing the bird logo with a stylized version of the 24th letter of the Latin alphabet.
Inside Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco on Monday, X logos were projected in the cafeteria, whi-

le conference rooms were renamed to words with X in them, including “eXposure,” “eXult” and “s3Xy,” according to photos seen by The New York Times. Workers also began removing bird-related paraphernalia, such as a giant blue logo in the cafeteria. Outside the building, workers took off the first six letters of Twitter’s name before the San Francisco Police Department stopped them for performing “unauthorized work,” according to an alert sent by the department.
Musk had long said he might make the name change, but he hastened the process in a tweet early Sunday when he declared that “soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.” He has said he hopes to turn Twitter into an “everything app” called X, which would encompass not only social networking, but also banking and shopping.
Earlier Monday, Musk also shared a photo of a giant X projected on Twitter’s San Francisco office building with the caption: “Our headquarters tonight.”
The moves — which are continuing — are the most visible changes that Musk has made to Twitter since he closed the deal to buy the company in October. Behind the scenes, he has taken many steps to overhaul the firm, eliminating thousands of employees and changing the platform’s features, including badges that were meant to verify users, as well as the rules governing what can and can’t be said
Musk risked the wrath of Twitter’s users even as he can ill afford to upset them. His company faces financial difficulties and increased competition, with rival Meta releasing an app this month for real-time, public conversations called Threads. The new app quickly racked up 100 million downloads in less than a week, though use of the app is under scrutiny.
Mike Carr, a co-founder of the branding company NameStormers, said Musk’s X logo could be interpreted as having an ominous “Big Brother” tech overlord vibe. Unlike the blue bird, which he described as warm and cuddly but perhaps a bit dated and weighed down by bad press, the new logo was “very harsh,” he said.
Still, it conjured phrases like “X marks the spot” and could help Musk differentiate the platform from its Twitter baggage, Carr said.
Musk has shown a disdain toward Twitter’s previous corporate culture. He has quibbled with the number of bird references in the company’s internal team names and products. At one point, he changed the name of a crowdsourced fact-checking feature to “Community Notes” from “Birdwatch.” He recently also had someone cover the “w” in Twitter’s name at its San Francisco headquarters.
Among those who didn’t seem bothered by the change was Jack Dorsey, a Twitter founder and former CEO. He said in a tweet Monday that while a rebrand was not “essential” to achieving Musk’s vision, there was an argument for it.
“The Twitter brand carries a lot of baggage,” Dorsey wrote. “But all that matters is the utility it provides, not the name.”
Wall Street capped a wobbly day of trading Tuesday with modest gains, while Treasury yields extended their recent rally.
The S&P 500 inched up less than 0.1% after flipping between small gains and losses for much of the day. About 62% of companies in the index rose, with energy sector stocks notching the biggest gain as crude oil prices rose. Companies that rely on consumer spending also helped lift the market, outweighing declines in health care, communications and technology stocks.
Small-company stocks continued to outpace the rest of the market by a wide margin, a sign that investors are becoming more optimistic about an economic rebound. The Russell 2000 small-cap index climbed to a record high.
Banks and other financial companies added to recent gains as Treasury yields marched higher for the sixth straight day amid expectations that the economy will pull out of its slump after a powerful recovery sweeps the globe later this year. Bond yields can influence interest rates on mortgages and other consumer loans, boosting bank revenue.
“The odds of additional stimulus have gone up and we’re seeing some of the sectors that are likely beneficiaries being rewarded in terms of price movement,” said Sal Bruno, chief investment officer at IndexIQ.
The S&P 500 rose 1.58 points to 3,801.19. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 60 points, or 0.2%, to 31,068.69. The Nasdaq composite added 36 points, or 0.3%, to 13,072.43. The three indexes remain close to the all-time highs each set on Friday.
Markets have been charging higher recently amid a wave of optimism about the future. The rollout of coronavirus vaccines has Wall Street anticipating a big rebound for the economy and corporate profits as daily life starts to return toward normal later this year. Expectations are also rising for another round of stimulus coming for the economy because Democrats are set to soon have control of the White House, Senate and House.
But the gains have been so big that critics say stocks and other investments simply look too expensive. Some measures of value in the stock market are at their priciest levels since 2000, when the dot-com bubble was popping. That includes how much investors are paying for each $1 in profits that a company produces.
Low interest rates and almost nonexistent inflation have been encouraging investors to keep piling into stocks, even though their prices are rising faster than their profits. But longer-term interest rates have begun to pull higher with expectations for more borrowing by the U.S. government, economic growth and possibly inflation in the future. The yield on the 10-year Treasury briefly hit 1.18% Tuesday, before easing back to 1.14%. That’s up from 1.12% late Monday and from less than 0.90% at the start of the year.
“I wonder whether as the economy reopens and consumer confidence comes back does that further push rates up and challenge the justification of these values,” said Andrew Slimmon, portfolio manager at Morgan Stanley Investment Management.
Besides driving investors away from pricey stocks, higher interest rates can also make borrowing more expensive and hit the housing and other industries particularly hard. That could mean additional pressure on the Federal Reserve,
which has been trying to keep interest rates low to jolt the economy out of its pandemic-caused weakness.
The Fed has held short-term interest rates at a record low of nearly zero and bought all kinds of bonds in its drive to help the economy. Its next policy meeting on interest rates is in two weeks.
And despite all the hopes for the future, the present remains bleak. The pandemic is accelerating around the world, particularly as new and potentially more contagious variants of the coronavirus spread. That helped force U.S. employers to cut more jobs than they added in December, the first month that’s happened since the economy was collapsing during the spring.
Wildfires devouring swaths of Algeria’s Mediterranean coast have killed 34 people over two days, Algerian authorities said Tuesday, as an extreme heat wave sears North Africa, Southern Europe and the sea between them.
The dead include 10 soldiers who were aiding rescue efforts across Algeria’s forested Kabylia region, the Algerian Interior Ministry said. Another 16 people died in the fires in the village of Ath Oussalah, according to Berber TV, a local broadcaster.
One villager whom the station captured on camera had lost her daughter. “I wish her home burned down but she was still alive,” the woman told onlookers in the village.
The fires forced more than 1,500 households to evacuate and caused at least 1,700 homes to lose power, state-run radio reported. Plumes of smoke rose from at least 16 cities east of the capital, Algiers, including Bejaia, Jijel and Tizi Ouzou. The government, which had deployed 8,000 emergency responders, said Tuesday that it had contained 80% of the 97 fires, but that 13 remained out of control.
The blazes had also spread to neighboring Tunisia, which is suffering through similarly intense heat.
For days now, countries around the world have been trapped in a cycle of nightmarish heat waves as the effects of climate change are exacerbated by El Niño, a cyclical weather pattern that originates in the Pacific. The same parched
conditions helped ignite wildfires in Greece in recent days, forcing mass evacuations of residents and tourists there.
In some parts of Algeria, temperatures have reached as high as 135 degrees Fahrenheit, or 57 Celsius; in Tunisia, it has hit 120 degrees, or 49 Celsius. Power and water cuts have plagued Algerians for two weeks as the heat set in, with the taps running dry in many cities. Some residents have said that water is available for only half a day, every other day.
Public anger over the shortages and the fires has put heavy pressure on Algeria’s authoritarian government, led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who is seeking reelection next year. Although the relentless heat is likely to have contributed to the fires, rumors of arson were rife. Algerian prosecutors in several areas launched criminal investigations into the blazes’ origins Monday in what appeared to be a bid to quash the rising anger.
The officials announced they would refer any evidence of foul play to courts that normally handle terrorism and organized crime cases. The Interior Ministry also said that Tebboune had ordered the government to look into compensation for the victims.
“I ask God almighty to shower the victims with the abundance of his mercy, accept them with the martyrs and the righteous, grant the injured a speedy recovery and inspire all of us with beautiful patience and good condolences,” Tebboune said in a statement.
Fires have devastated Algeria during each of the past few summers, with the most damaging fires consuming parts of Laab’a Nathirathen, a densely forested region, in 2021.
Previous years’ wildfires struck groves of olive trees in dry inland areas, but this year’s fires have threatened coastal areas, with some moving dangerously close to Mediterranean beaches.
The Algerian army said in a statement that the record temperatures and difficult weather conditions were hampering relief efforts.
There are no walls behind the altar of Transfiguration Cathedral, the Odesa landmark that was heavily damaged on Sunday when Russian missiles struck the port city.
So when the breeze from the nearby Black Sea blows, it interrupts the stillness inside one of Ukraine’s largest places of worship, and a dangling chandelier in the nave swings like a slow pendulum from side to side. Detritus floats down from the roof, as workers, United Nations employees and priests don hard hats to inspect the damage to an icon of the city’s cultural heritage.
“We hope God will protect the heart of our cathedral,” said the Rev. Oleksii, who gave only his first name, after a morning Mass held in front of the red-and-white caution tape roping off the main part of the church.
Outside, residents gathered around the entrance to the cathedral, which is now boarded up with plywood. Many stopped to kiss an icon of the patroness of their city, which an employee of the church said had been pulled from the rubble. Others walked by to witness the destruction.
Founded in 1794, the cathedral became the most important church in Novorossiya, the name given by the Russian Empire to land along the Black Sea and Crimea that is part of present-day Ukraine. It was destroyed during a Soviet campaign against religion in 1936 and was not rebuilt
until after the fall of the Soviet Union.
“This is inhumanity,” said Ludmila Partinchuk, who came by with her husband, Oleh.
Ludmila Partinchuk said that getting rest during the past week had been “a big problem” because “when you feel the night coming, you cannot go to sleep.”
The repeated missile strikes this week are new for Odesa, which has largely been spared from the widespread attacks that have hit cities including nearby Mykolaiv and the capital, Kyiv.
“Before, the Russians focused on targeting us with drones and most were shot down,” said Petro Obukhov, a member of the Odesa City Council. The Black Sea Grain initiative, a compromise brokered by the United Nations and Turkey to allow Ukraine to continue shipping grain from its Black Sea ports, also provided a modicum of security until Moscow pulled out of it a week ago.
“We felt we were relatively safe, but now this feeling is gone,”Obukhov said.
Odesa has been one of the most visited cities in Ukraine for domestic and foreign tourists, drawn by its cobblestoned city center, much of it built in the late 19th century. Its history as a port city resulted in a widely diverse corner of Ukraine, with French, Italian and Greek merchants mixing with Ukrainian, Russian and Jewish families. On Tuesday, many of the cafes and restaurants were largely empty.
“Many tourists are staying away,” said Oleksii Khalykh -
in, 20, a tour guide, who said he was continuing his work so that locals and visitors could get a deeper sense of Odesa’s diverse history — and remember it in case it is obliterated.
“They are trying to destroy the identity of the city, he said. “Now we are trying to do everything possible to make sure that Odesa’s culture and heritage lives in the souls of its people.”
As protesters continue to pour into the streets throughout Israel, condemning a bill passed Monday by the right-wing government to blunt the power of the country’s judiciary, the Israeli Supreme Court faces a momentous decision: How should it respond to a challenge to its own power?
The new law limits the rationale the court can use to strike down decisions by the government. Yet as soon as it passed, petitions asked the justices to do just that, by voiding the law itself.
Analysts said the court has essentially three choices: 1) strike down the law; 2) narrowly interpret it to curb its impact; or 3) simply not decide by refusing to hear any of the petitions.
The bill was passed by the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, as part of a broad plan by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to overhaul the judiciary by taking control of how judges are selected and eliminating the power of the courts to review certain cases.
The protesters say the bill, and the broader plan, are an attack on democracy because the courts are the primary check on the Knesset and the prime minister in Israel’s parliamentary system. Netanyahu and his allies defend the law as a protection of democracy, a necessary means of preventing judges from interfering with the decisions of elected lawmakers.
Any decision by the court — including a refusal to hear a challenge to the new law — has implications for the waves of protest, and counterprotest by the law’s supporters, engulfing the country.
“If the court dismisses the petitions, that could deflate the protests” against judicial overhaul, said Adam Shinar, a law professor at Reichman University in Herzliya, Israel. “But if the court acts against the government, that will inflame its critics. So you have all these strategic political considerations.”
Law and politics inevitably become entangled when a high court is faced with a serious challenge to its own authority, other analysts said.
“In these potentially revolutionary moments, it’s really unclear what courts should do,” said Kim Lane Scheppele, a sociologist at Princeton University. “There are two theories. One is that the court should strike back hard against the government. But this can risk confirming the perception that the court is out of
control. So the other theory is that the court should be cautious and follow the law to show the criticism is exaggerated. And then maybe that makes the government back off.”
But in Israel the justices have never faced a challenge from the government like this one.
Monday’s bill says the court may no longer use the legal standard of “reasonableness” to overturn government decisions. It was enacted as an amendment to one of Israel’s Basic Laws, which the justices have never previously struck down.
Israel was founded in 1948 without a constitution. Ten years later, the Knesset began passing what are known as the Basic Laws, at first to set forth the powers of the country’s governing bodies. Originally, Basic Laws, which can be passed by a simple parliamentary majority, were not necessarily superior to other laws. Then in 1992, the Knesset passed a Basic Law that guaranteed dignity and liberty. Supreme Court Justice Aharon Barak, one of the country’s most influential jurists, proclaimed a “constitutional revolution,” and the court established the supremacy of the Basic Laws and gave judges more sway to interpret them.
Since then, the court has laid out paths for striking down a Basic Law without actually doing so, legal experts said. “For example, the court said that it could strike down a Basic Law if it impinges on the core nature of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state,” said Shinar of Reichman University.
If the justices do not want to strike down a Basic Law now, they could narrowly interpret the limit on the reasonableness standard by using another standard they have developed — for example, that of “proportionality,” or evaluating the fit between the means and the ends of a statute and its costs and benefits.
“Proportionality is a balancing test,” said Rivka Weill, another law professor at Reichman University. She added: “It’s not like the government has taken away all the power of judicial review.”
The petitions before the court challenge the law in the abstract, and so the judges could decline to hear those cases, and wait for a concrete case to accept for review. One such case could materialize if, as Netanyahu’s critics fear, the government tries to replace the attorney general, Gali Baharav-Miara, who is overseeing the prime minister’s prosecution in a cor-
ruption case.
Netanyahu has denied any plan to disrupt his trial. But if the government removed Baharav-Miara, it would “cross a red line for the court,” Weill said. So would passing the planned bill to give the government control over how judges are selected, she added.
“The court will not cave on judicial independence,” she said.
Either scenario would give the court a vivid set of facts for considering the elimination of the reasonableness standard, which would be its usual tool for reviewing the dismissal of a government official or a change to Israel’s system of checks and balances.
Earlier this year, the court angered its critics by holding that it was not reasonable for Netanyahu to appoint Aryeh Deri, a longtime ultra-Orthodox politician, to his Cabinet because Deri had recently been convicted of tax fraud.
“It’s hard to explain in a nontechnical fashion why what the prime minister did here is unreasonable,” said Scheppele, the Princeton sociologist. “The word itself seems fuzzy from its ordinary use, even though it’s a clear and constrained doctrine that other countries like Britain also use. And you might ask, why should the courts tell Netanyahu who he can have in his government?”
In other countries, the check on a chief executive’s power to appoint the members of his Cabinet would not come from the courts. In the United States, for example, the Senate has the power to confirm a president’s appointees.
But the comparison isn’t apt, Scheppele said. Israel lacks the checks and balances of the American system. The country does not have two houses of Congress that can block each other, or a clear separation between the executive and legislative branches, or a federalist system of states or provinces that retain significant powers.
The fragile nature of Israel’s checks and balances explains why the stakes for judicial independence are so high in this controversy. It also means that the court can only do so much to preserve its own powers.
“You reach a point where judicial interpretation of the law runs out,” Scheppele said. “A court can’t really fix what’s wrong by interpreting a Basic Law” if the government continues to undermine the court or tries to pack it with new judges. “When the threat is to the fabric of the democracy, you have to win an election and change the laws.”
Europe’s liberal and moderate establishment breathed easier Monday after Spain’s nationalist Vox party faltered in Sunday’s elections, stalling for now a surge from far-right parties around the continent that seemed on the brink of washing over even the progressive bastion of Spain.
“A relief for Europe,” read a front-page headline in the liberal La Repubblica in Italy, where hard-right leader Giorgia Meloni became prime minister last year and predicted “the hour of the patriots has arrived” in a video message to her Vox allies this month.
But instead of Vox becoming the first hard-right party to enter government in Spain since the end of the Franco dictatorship nearly 50 years ago, as many polls had predicted, it sank. The party’s poor returns at the polls also took down the underperforming center-right conservatives who had depended on Vox’s support to form a government.
As a result, no single party or coalition immediately gained enough parliamentary seats to govern, thrusting Spain into a familiar political muddle and giving new life to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who only days ago seemed moribund. Suddenly, Sánchez appeared best positioned to cobble together another progressive government in the coming weeks to avoid new elections.
“This democracy will find the governability formula,” he told leaders of his Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party on Monday, according to El País.
What is clear for now is that Spanish voters rebuked the Vox party, which lost nearly half its seats in parliament, signaling a clear desire to turn away from the extremes and back toward the political center.
Pro-European politicians took the result as an encouraging sign that next year’s European elections would also be won in the center, dealing a setback to far-right forces that have made gains in Sweden, Finland, Germany, France and Italy, as well as the United States.
Vox’s campaign parroted nearly uniform hard-right, nationalist views espoused in other nations, with opposition to migration and LGBTQ rights, promotion of traditional Christian values and the assertion of nationalism over meddling from the European Union.
But many of those issues failed to draw Spanish voters, or even scared them, and the country’s election results went contrary to Europe’s political winds.
Instead, the results made clear that the rise of Vox had more to do with the nationalist response to a 2017 explosion of secessionist fervor in Spain’s Catalonia region. Sánchez ma-
naged to defuse that issue during his five years in office by delivering pardons and weakening penalties for the secessionists.
For that he paid a political price among Spaniards angered by the Catalans, but as long as the issue seemed on the back burner, so did Vox. Ultimately, the party’s message had far fewer takers in this election than it did in 2019.
“Catalonia has been one of the main drivers of the rise of Vox,” said Juan Rodríguez Teruel, a political scientist at the University of Valencia.
But Sunday’s results also showed that the Catalan issue was not quite dead yet. On Monday, it became clear that the small independence parties of that region may very well hold the key to unlocking a new government for Sánchez, just as they did in the last vote.
Critically, those parties include the proindependence allies of Carles Puigdemont, the former regional president of Catalonia who led the failed secessionist movement and is still on the run, living in self-imposed exile in Belgium.
“Puigdemont could make Sánchez president,” read a headline in the daily Spanish newspaper El Mundo.
A complicated cat-and-mouse game was immediately underway Monday, with Spanish prosecutors issuing a new arrest warrant for Puigdemont.
“One day you are decisive in order to form
a Spanish government, the next day Spain orders your arrest,” he tweeted on Monday.
Gabriel Rufián, a member of parliament with the Republican Left of Catalonia, a proCatalan independence party, said in a preelection interview that Sánchez had no choice but to deal with the secessionists.
“Four years ago in the electoral campaign, Sánchez promised to search for Puigdemont in Waterloo and arrest him. He could not. It was absurd,” he said. “Months later he sat down at the negotiating table with us. It was because of political pressure, because he needed to govern his country.”
On Sunday night, after the vote, he boiled his message down simply to “Either Catalonia or Vox.” But his party lost support, too, in Spaniards’ turn to the center.
What a revival the Catalonia issue would mean now for Spain, the secessionists and Vox remains to be seen.
Vox was established a decade ago when its leader, Santiago Abascal, split from the Popular Party, long a big center-right tent that included monarchists, libertarian supporters of same-sex marriage, ultraconservative Catholics and Spaniards who detested the independence movements of the north.
The party believed in a unified Spain; however, overt expressions of that view — even waving the national flag — in the deca-
des after the Franco regime were considered taboo signs of nationalism.
But spurred by Catalonia’s push for independence, Vox was more than willing to cross that line. A surge of Spaniards followed it.
The nationalists in Vox — who called for the Catalan movement to be put down by any means necessary — soaked up support. By the 2019 elections, they had grown to the third largest party in the country.
In a short speech Sunday night after his party’s drubbing, a downcast Abascal acknowledged that Sánchez now had the support to block a new government, and could also be sworn in again with the support of the far-left and the separatist parties, or what he called “the support of communism, coup separatism and terrorism.”
“We’re going to resist,” he insisted, saying that his party was prepared to be in the opposition or “repeat elections.”
But analysts said new elections would likely only weaken Vox further. The leverage had shifted back to Catalonia, and more specifically to the more hard-line Together for Catalonia party, founded by Puigdemont.
“We will not make Sánchez president in exchange for nothing,” Míriam Nogueras, a leader of the Together for Catalonia party, said at her headquarters Sunday night.
Others in her party, who were pardoned by Sánchez, have suggested that further amnesties and a referendum on independence may be the price they demand.
But left-wing politicians and locals wary of Vox worried that increased tension with Catalonia was exactly what the far right needed for a resurgence.
“We want dialogue with Catalonia. We want an agreement. Go out and vote for dialogue, for an agreement, for a better Catalonia,” Yolanda Díaz, leader of the hard-left Sumar party, which won 31 seats, told a rally in Barcelona on Friday night.
On Monday, her party reached out to Puigdemont and the Together for Catalonia party to persuade them to back the government.
On the eve of Sunday’s election in Barcelona, along a main thoroughfare that was blanketed in Catalan flags during the 2017 protests, there was only one visible.
“The situation in Spain and the eruption of the extreme right is a consequence of what happened here in Catalonia,” said Joaquim Hernandez, 64.
“By not having the referendum, you keep the tension and the confrontation that benefits the independence parties and Vox,” he said, “because Catalonia is unfortunately an argument that the nationalists use to win votes.”
Last week, a friend asked me what I could learn from a four-day trip to Ukraine I was planning that I couldn’t glean just by reading the news. It was a fair question. With the trip now behind me, I can answer.
I learned how strange it is to visit a country to which no plane flies and, as of last Monday, no ship sails — thanks to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s cruel and cynical withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative through which Ukrainian farm products reached hungry countries like Kenya, Lebanon and Somalia. The only feasible way for a visitor to get from the Polish border to Kyiv, Ukraine, is a nine-hour train ride, where the sign inside the carriage door urges, “Be Brave Like Ukraine.”
I learned that you need to download the Air Alert! app to your smartphone as soon as you enter the country. It sounds an alarm every time the system detects drones, missiles or other incoming aerial threats in your vicinity, something that happened time and again during my short stay. Following the alarm, a recording — in English by “Star Wars” actor Mark Hamill — intones: “Proceed to the nearest shelter. Don’t
be careless. Your overconfidence is your weakness.”
I learned that Kyiv is hopping. Despite what the U.S. Embassy says have been 1,620 missile and drone attacks on the city — and despite an economy that contracted 29% in the first year of the war — cars jam the roads, people dine in outdoor cafes on well-swept sidewalks and activists, civil servants and elected officials freely share divergent views with visiting columnists. To adapt a phrase attributed to Yitzhak Rabin, Ukrainians are going about their everyday lives as if there is no war, while waging war as if there is no everyday life.
I learned that every member of the U.S. Embassy staff in Kyiv, led by our courageous and cleareyed ambassador, Bridget Brink, volunteered for the duty. They have been separated from their families and living for months on end in hotel rooms. They have the job of overseeing one of the largest U.S. assistance efforts since the Marshall Plan, ensuring that tens of thousands of individual pieces of American military hardware in Ukrainian hands are properly accounted for, reconstituting an embassy that was gutted on the eve of Russia’s invasion and keeping tabs on Russian war crimes — some 95,000 of which have been documented so far by the Ukrainian prosecutor general’s office.
I learned what it was like to sit in conference rooms and walk along corridors that would soon be shattered by Russian ordnance. On Tuesday, I joined a diplomatic group led by United States Agency for International Development Administrator Samantha Power on a visit to the port of Odesa. Power met first with Ukrainian officials to discuss logistical options for their exports after Putin’s withdrawal from the grain agreement, then with farmers to discuss issues such as de-mining their fields and de-risking their finances. The stately Port Authority building in which the meetings took place, a purely civilian target, was struck barely a day after our departure.
I learned that Ukrainians have no interest in turning their victimization into an identity. Years ago, in Belgrade, I saw how the Serbian government had preserved the wreck of its old defense ministry, hit by NATO bombs in the 1999 Kosovo war, in keeping with its self-pitying perceptions of that war. By contrast, in Bucha, the Kyiv suburb that suffered some of the worst atrocities during Russia’s brief occupation in the early days of the war, I witnessed the transformation of apartment buildings dotted with patched-up bullet holes into trendy coworking spaces. As Anatoliy Fedoruk, the mayor of Bucha, told Power, “Memory will stay in memoirs but residents want to rebuild without reminders.”
I learned that Ukrainians aren’t likely to trade sovereign territory for Western security assurances, much less for some kind of armistice deal with Moscow. They tried the former in the 1990s with the Budapest Memorandum, in which they surrendered the nuclear arsenal on their soil to Russia for the sake of toothless guarantees of territorial integrity. They tried the latter with the equally toothless Minsk agreements after Russia’s first invasion in 2014. The goal of Western policy should be to provide Ukraine with the military means they need to win, rather than to pressure Ukraine into again bargaining away its rights to sovereignty and security for the sake of assuaging our anxieties about Russian escalation.
I learned that, for all the aid we’ve given Ukraine, we are the true beneficiaries in the relationship, and they the true benefactors. Ben Wallace, Britain’s usually thoughtful defense minister, suggested after this month’s NATO summit that Ukrainians should show more gratitude to their arms suppliers. That gets the relationship backward. NATO countries are paying for their long-term security in money, which is cheap, and munitions, which are replaceable. Ukrainians are counting their costs in lives and limbs lost.
I am writing this column from Warsaw Chopin Airport. Parked outside the terminal are jetliners destined for Doha, Qatar; Istanbul; Rome; Toronto; New York. The sight of them here could scarcely have been imagined 40 years ago. It came true because the Polish people remained, in Ronald Reagan’s apt words, “magnificently unreconciled to oppression.”
Today, it is Poland’s neighbors in Ukraine who are magnificently unreconciled to invasion. What I learned from four days under closed skies is never to take a bustling airport scene like this for granted.

“Detén las
he had a big band behind him, he was easily brassy enough to hold his own. But he didn’t steamroller through his songs. He was ever attentive to lyrics. His signature song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” has two melodic peaks near the end. The first is on the line “When I come home”; he sustains “home” and tapers it off with longing in his vibrato, as if he’s feeling the distance. Soon afterward comes “Your golden sun will shine for me,” and he sings “sun” as if he knows he’ll be basking in it.
Bennett’s long, long career had its share of commercial ups and downs and transient record-company pressures. As the 1960s ended, he was persuaded to record recent pop hits on the album “Tony Sings the Great Hits of Today!,” though he maintained some dignity by putting lush orchestral arrangements behind songs like George Harrison’s “Something.”
After changing labels — and, in the mid-1970s, starting his own short-lived but artistically rewarding label, Improv — Bennett returned to what he did best: singing standards with musicians who brought out their jazz possibilities. Two albums he made with the harmony-probing pianist Bill Evans — “The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album” (1975) and “Together Again” (1977), both just piano-and-voice duets — are luminous testaments to the way Bennett never took familiar songs for granted.
By JON PARELESHas there ever been a more purely likable pop figure than Tony Bennett?
Throughout a career that began in the 1940s, Bennett, who died Friday at 96, maintained one mission, amiably and unswervingly. He didn’t chase trends; he didn’t get defensive, either. Instead, he let listeners — and, in recent decades, much younger duet partners — come to him, generation after generation. He welcomed them to a repertoire of songs he admired, knew intimately and was happy to share.
Bennett sang vintage pop standards, the pre-rock canon sometimes called the Great American Songbook. They’re songs mostly about grown-up love, about courtship, yearning and fulfillment, with elegant rhymes and ingenious melodies that invite a little improvisation. He recorded with orchestras, with major jazz musicians, with big bands and, for more than 50 years, with pianist and arranger Ralph Sharon and his trio. He was always unplugged — a simple fact that cannily recharged his career when he played “MTV Unplugged” in 1994.
Bennett’s voice made the technical challenges of his songs evaporate. As a young man, he showed off his near-operatic range and dynamic control in early
recordings like “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” from 1950. But he wasn’t an old-fashioned crooner; his sense of swing was just as strong. And he understood that pure virtuosity can keep listeners at a distance. He soon revealed a grain in his voice that made it earthy and approachable, downplaying his precision. Very often, there was a jovial savvy in his phrasing; he’d punch out a note ahead of the beat, as if he couldn’t wait to sing it.
There was always an easy strength, a self-confident baritone underpinning, in his singing. When
He was 67 when he recorded “MTV Unplugged” with Sharon’s trio and a guest appearance by Elvis Costello. It was a shrewd and satisfying move; Bennett became pop’s cool grandpa. Rock-hating Grammy voters seized their chance to give him his second album of the year award (after “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”), and current rock and pop performers embraced the chance to sing with him and learn from him. Duet albums (with k.d. lang, Diana Krall and Lady Gaga) and individual duet tracks (with, among many others, Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Bono, Christina Aguilera, Queen Latifah and Amy Winehouse) made clear how admired, durable, companionable and game he was; even the awkward moments are endearing.
In later years, as his voice lowered and thickened, Bennett used those qualities to bring out mature perspectives. The slow-motion version of Jerome Kern’s “The Way You Look Tonight” that appears on the 2007 compilation, “Sings the American Songbook, Vol. 1,” is latter-day Bennett: a little raspy, a little tremulous and gloriously fond, an affirmation not only of “tonight” but of a longtime love. There’s a rueful chuckle as he sings, “That laugh that wrinkles your nose/ Touches my foolish heart.” Those lyrics were written in 1936, and Bennett was still listening through every line, still getting closer to the song.
Tony Bennett performs in the Newport Jazz Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York on June 25, 1976. Bennett let listeners and, in recent decades, much younger duet partners come to him, generation after generation. While Chanel revisited the splendor of camellias, Giorgio Armani decided to rein vent the rose for his Fall Winter 2023 Privé Collection. And so the Italian Maestro gave us roses, rosettes, buds and petals in every size and texture in tones of gold, charcoal, red and his favorite, black.
Armani called the collection, “Le Temps de Roses,” a “carnal, seductive, mysterious bloom of red roses. Glossy lacquered roses, embossed on surfaces in a pattern adorned with graphic black and brilliant accents of gold.”
“A journey from West to East through elongated silhouettes, in a collection that reinterprets the most iconic of flowers without resorting to trite romanticism.”
And yes, roses were created and sewn to everything, from jackets, stoles and lapels to hems, earrings, shoes and hats. Could the House of Armani have gone too far with the one flower? Maybe.
Exquisite cigarette pants and straight-leg trousers in soft champagne and muted silver were modeled with a variety of embellished boxy jackets and jacquard blazers for a polished and sophisticated look. Loving the understated look of muted metallics with a little bit of crystals and a dash of beadwork. This look is perfection: lustrous fabrics, narrow silhouettes and monochromatic brocade details. Nothing excessive, no added volume, just fabulous evening wear.
The 67-piece collection, presented at Les Invalides in Paris, included velvet vests, heavily beaded tunics, figure-forming strapless sheaths, architectural dusters and fluid skirts in gold with dropped waist.
parts of the gums become affected — especially the gums around the backs of the teeth where people often don’t brush as well, Neiva said.
Dentists can diagnose gingivitis by using a special instrument that measures the distance between gums and teeth, said Y. Natalie Jeong, professor and chair of the department of periodontology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Larger spaces are indicative of the condition.
When gingivitis is left untreated, the bacteria can invade and destroy the tissues under the gums, causing advanced gum disease. “The bone supporting the teeth starts to break down, leaving the roots of the teeth exposed and sensitive in some cases,” Foyle said. “Spaces develop between the teeth, and the teeth start to get loose.”
said. The part of the gums adjacent to their teeth may also look red rather than pink.
Smokers with gingivitis may not experience any bleeding or other symptoms, Jeong said. “People tend to think, ‘OK, my gums never bleed, I should be just fine,’” she said — but that’s a misconception.
Regular brushing and flossing can help prevent gum disease, but once gingivitis has set in, good oral hygiene at home may not be enough. That’s because the bacteria may have started to accumulate below the gum level, Neiva said. In these cases, a professional cleaning and, sometimes, antibiotics, can treat — and cure — gingivitis.
If your spit is sometimes tinged pink at least a couple of times a week after you brush or floss, it’s possible you have early-stage gum disease. This condition can also have other surprising symptoms — or none.
“It’s a very, very quiet disease,” said DRodrigo Neiva, chair of periodontics at Penn Dental Medicine.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of American adults older than age show signs of gum disease, and 9% have severe gum disease, known as periodontal disease.
When left untreated, gum disease can become more difficult to remedy. “Patients may eventually end up los-
ing their teeth,” Neiva said. And some research has connected periodontal disease with other health conditions, such as dementia, diabetes and heart disease.
Early gum disease is called gingivitis, and it is characterized by inflammation of the gums, also known as gingiva.
“It is caused by bacteria on teeth — plaque — that release products that irritate the gums,” said Deborah Foyle, interim department head of periodontics at Texas A&M University School of Dentistry.
Good oral hygiene is key to preventing gum disease, because it removes plaque from the teeth before bacteria can harm the gums. Often, people develop gingivitis because they aren’t brushing and flossing adequately. Sometimes, only
People who smoke, have diabetes or grind their teeth have an increased chance of developing gum disease, Jeong said. Some medications, such as steroids, and certain epilepsy and cancer drugs, can also increase the risk. Genetics can also make people more or less susceptible, she noted.
People who rarely get cavities may be more likely than other people to get gum disease, too, Neiva said. That’s because the bacteria that cause gum disease outcompete and suppress the bacteria that cause cavities.
“It’s very common to see patients with very, very advanced periodontal disease not having a single cavity,” he said.
Gingivitis often goes unnoticed because it doesn’t cause pain. But people with gingivitis may notice that their gums bleed when they brush or floss, Neiva
Once gingivitis has progressed into more advanced periodontal disease, people’s gums may start to recede, causing their teeth to look longer, Jeong said. They may also experience increased sensitivity around the gums. Their teeth may not fit together the same way when they bite because they have shifted, and they might have chronic bad breath. Eventually, their teeth may start to loosen and even fall out.
Advanced periodontal disease can be incurable. Dentists and periodontists can, however, recommend treatments that slow down or prevent further gum and bone loss. They may also deep-clean the roots of affected teeth and recommend gum surgery.
Keeping your gums healthy is ultimately simple: Brush twice a day, floss once a day and see your dentist for cleanings at least every six months, Neiva said.
“The sooner we detect it,” he said, “the more we can do.”

When Julie Ertz returned from maternity leave this year and began a race to get herself ready to play for the United States at the World Cup, she expected life on the national team to be different. But different because she was adjusting to life as a mother and had new off-thefield responsibilities, not different because she would be playing a new position.
Yet when coach Vlatko Andonovski reached out and asked her if she would consider returning as a center back, a role she had not played in years, instead of as a defensive midfielder, Ertz said yes right away. Anything, she told Andonovski, to help the team win.
The switch was, at the time, a closely held secret inside the team. In several weeks of practices, Ertz took the place of Alana Cook in the back line and set to work trying to develop a working relationship with her new center-back partner, World Cup newcomer Naomi Girma.
The Ertz-Girma pairing made its public debut in the team’s 3-0 victory over Vietnam last Friday. And in 90 scoreless minutes, they seemed as if they had been playing side by side for years.
Ertz, who had played center back for the Americans’ 2015 World Cup-winning team before becoming one of the best defensive midfielders in the world, didn’t miss a beat. Girma was not surprised: She called her new partner “one of the best on the team at that communication, of leading, organizing.”
The familiarity and relationship between Ertz and Girma will be even more important for the United States when it tries to fend off its second opponent, the Netherlands, today (9 p.m. ET, FOX). The Dutch, whom the United States played and beat in
the World Cup final in 2019 and during the Tokyo Olympics two years later, will pose a much stronger threat to the Americans than Vietnam did. They beat Portugal on Sunday and move the ball around quicker and more accurately. Their precise passing — honed over years together and in the world’s best leagues — has the capability of picking apart even the strongest, and sturdiest, defenses.
Girma did not seem worried earlier this week.
“Us two balancing off of each other in the middle of the game, being like, ‘OK, I
think we should do this a little differently,’ and making those small adjustments during the game, was really good for us,” Girma said.
Andonovski said he got the idea to move Ertz out of the midfield and onto the back line not long after the U.S. team’s captain, Becky Sauerbrunn, was ruled out of the World Cup with a nagging foot injury. The team needed a strong replacement. And just as Sauerbrunn had once served as a steadying influence for Ertz, who was still a relative newcomer before the 2015 World Cup, Ertz now took a turn in the leadership position.
“I think it today it showed that how good she can be in the back line, in possession and out of possession,” Andonovski said of Ertz’s performance after the Vietnam game.
“So I’m glad that we made that decision.”

LeBron James Jr., the son of NBA star LeBron James, suffered a cardiac arrest while practicing in Los Angeles on Monday and was taken to the hospital for treatment in the intensive care unit, according to a statement from a spokesperson for LeBron James and his wife, Savannah. The younger James, known as Bronny, is now in stable condition and no longer in the ICU, the statement said.
“LeBron and Savannah wish to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes,” the statement said.
Bronny James, 18, will be a freshman at the University of Southern California this fall. He is the eldest of Lakers star LeBron James’ three children. Bronny James was a four-star recruit and chose USC over offers from Oregon and Ohio State.
After this season Bronny James would be eligible for the NBA draft. LeBron James, who became the league’s all-time leading scorer last season, has often said he would like to play on an NBA team with his son.
Fred McGriff played for six franchises, so many that his new plaque at the Hall of Fame has no logo on the cap. Scott Rolen represents the St. Louis Cardinals, but he played for four teams in all.
“Derek, Chipper,” Rolen said from the stage at the Clark Sports Center on Sunday, “I’ll have to explain that to you later.”
Many of the greats seated behind Rolen — including Derek Jeter, the former New York Yankees captain, and Chipper Jones, a pillar of the Atlanta Braves — never changed teams. Those players inspire the fiercest loyalty from fans and carry a kind of magnetic pull that compels folks to follow the rolling, rambling roads to the baseball shrine by Otsego Lake.
In that context, it was no surprise that this summer’s gathering was more intimate than usual. Neither McGriff nor Rolen spent more than five full seasons in any one spot, and their ceremony drew around 10,000 fans. Last year’s class, headlined by David Ortiz, a longtime Boston slugger, attracted some 35,000.
But while McGriff and Rolen were well traveled, they were also well respected. Consistent production — in Canada and California, in the Midwest, the Deep South and on the East Coast — kept them in demand and carried them to Cooperstown, New York.
“My goal was simply to make it to the big leagues,” said McGriff, a ninth-round draft choice who went on to match Lou Gehrig’s 493 homers, “and I exceeded every expectation I could ever imagine — and then some.”
McGriff was cut from the varsity baseball team as a sophomore at Jefferson High in Tampa, Florida. He hit .148 in his first pro summer, in 1981, and the Yankees traded him to Toronto as part of a package for Dale Murray, a veteran middle reliever, in December 1982.
Of all the manic moves in George Steinbrenner’s reckless 1980s, the McGriff deal hurt the Yankees most. None of the other exiled prospects who turned into stars — like Jay Buhner, Doug Drabek, Willie McGee and José Rijo — made it to Cooperstown.
“That little short porch in right field, that probably would have been a beautiful thing for me,” McGriff said, referring to Yankee Stadium’s inviting conditions for
left-handed hitters. But he managed just fine at first base with Toronto, San Diego, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
McGriff’s speech cited several Hall of Famers who helped him along that winding path. He tried to hit like George Brett, the Kansas City batting champion. Renowned executives Pat Gillick and John Schuerholz traded for him. Jones, as a rookie phenom in 1995, helped McGriff win a title with the Braves. Wade Boggs, a Tampa Bay teammate and a hitting savant, encouraged him to look fastball on every pitch.
“I did,” McGriff said, “and it worked.”
Rolen, a third baseman, took a different approach to his speech. In the six months since his election, he said, he thanked some of his biggest baseball influences by sending personal letters. On Sunday, he focused almost entirely on his family.
“It was a simple childhood with simple expectations and lessons,” said Rolen, who grew up in Jasper, Indiana,
about 50 miles north of the Kentucky border. “Family first; we are loved; and always take the high road.”
He paused.
“And then I got drafted — and so began 20 years of hypertension and acid reflux that I would trade for nothing.”
The Philadelphia Phillies took Rolen in the second round in June 1993, but he had a commitment to play baseball and basketball at the University of Georgia. Before he gave it up to turn pro, Rolen made the roster for an Indiana/Kentucky All-Star basketball game at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. He felt unprepared and called his father, Ed, for advice.
“Well, Dad,” Rolen said, “I can’t handle the ball, I can’t shoot, I’m completely out of basketball shape, and everybody in the entire gym — including the coach — is better than me.”
“OK,” Ed Rolen replied, and Scott was confused.
Ed Rolen repeated Scott’s words, listing all the reasons to be worried. Then, Ed asked, what can you do? Scott guessed
that he could rebound, play defense, scramble for loose balls and out-hustle the other players. Ed said that sounded OK.
“And then here come the words of wisdom: ‘Well, do that, then,’” Rolen said, pausing again as the crowd cheered. “It turns out that ‘Well, do that, then’ carried me into the minor leagues and gave me a simple mindset: that I would never allow myself to be unprepared or outworked. ‘Well, do that, then’ put me on this stage today.”
Once he internalized his father’s mantra, Rolen said, he never played to prove people wrong. Instead, he played simply to give full effort, every day, and live with the results of that process.
In the end, he earned eight Gold Gloves, hit 316 home runs and won a championship in 2006 with the Cardinals, his first stop after the Phillies and before the Toronto Blue Jays and the Cincinnati Reds.
Now, at last, McGriff and Rolen have joined their forever team, the greatest one of all. They are members of the Hall of Fame.
