Puerto Rico lags behind states in financial well-being

The financial well-being of Puerto Rico lags behind the rest of the mainland United States, according to an analysis conducted through a combination of research from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and information obtained from a National Financial Capability Study by the Finra Foundation.

According to a CFPB report published last week, the bureau works to ensure fair and equal access to financial products and services, including making a concerted effort to ensure that Puerto Rico and the rest of the U.S. territories are being analyzed and served just as are other regions of the United States. The CFPB used 2021 survey data from the Finra Foundation to understand the financial needs of Puerto Rico.

Using the CFPB Financial Well-Being Scale, which measures financial security and freedom of choice, the entity found that the average financial well-being score among adults in Puerto Rico in 2021 was 52 out of 100 –two points lower than the rest of the United States.

“While the share of adults with very low or low financial well-being is similar in Puerto Rico (18.2 percent) and the rest of the U.S. (18.0 percent), the share of adults with high or very high financial well-being is significantly lower in Puerto Rico (26.3 percent) compared to the rest of the U.S. (35.6 percent),” the CFPB said in a report July 27.

The report also said fewer Puerto Rico-based institutions today are left to serve the entire island. The island also has fewer financial products and many lenders operating

in the states do not operate in Puerto Rico.

In term of financial inclusion, 12% of the Puerto Rico households do not have bank accounts, money market or CD accounts, compared to 4.5% in the mainland U.S.; 40% of the adults in Puerto Rico do not have credit cards, compared to 20% in the United States; and 34% of the adults in Puerto Rico have used pawn shops, rent-to-own, auto title loan, refund anticipation check or pay day loan at least once over the past five years, compared to 32% in the mainland United States.

“Systemic barriers and challenges limit many Puerto Ricans’ access to fair and affordable financial services and products. What’s more, people encounter problems because of limited ability to speak and read English (the language of most financial transactions and disclosures) and they face rapidly rising housing costs,” the CFPB said. “All these challenges impede economic mobility, making it more difficult for Puerto Ricans to buy homes, save for their children’s future, start businesses, and build wealth.”

The study also found that the annual household median income in Puerto Rico was just below $22,000 in 2021, that 1.4 million people in Puerto Rico are reported as living below the federal poverty line, that almost 13 percent of Puerto Rico residents report that they do not have medical insurance and almost one-in-five reports foregoing medical treatment because of cost, that approximately 10 percent of households that occasionally overdraft their bank accounts may have to pay overdraft fees and that 22% of households pay credit card late fees, the CFPB said.

Isabela medical center mostly operational despite extensive blackout

Everyone who’s lived on the island for a decade or more knows that blackouts are fairly commonplace, yet somehow they just continue to happen regardless of how much time has passed since extreme weather events like Hurricane Maria.

The municipality of Isabela has once again suffered from another one of these infamous blackouts. Isabela Mayor Miguel “Ricky” Méndez Pérez informed the citizens of the northwestern coastal municipality late last week about severe damage to a line that carries 2,700 volts of electricity and alone supplies electricity for about 6,600 clients of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority.

“This is the information we have received from the private operator [LUMA Energy],” the mayor said Friday. “I can confirm that the entirety of the Isabela urban square [is without power].”

Besides homes, businesses, industries, and governmental and professional offices affected by the blackout, the Lamela neighborhood was also without electrical service, as were Costa Brava, Jardines del

Noroeste, Corchado and Medina, along with homes and businesses along highways PR-472 and PR-113 in the Cotto neighborhood, the governmental center, the town’s marina and the health unit administered by the Isabela Center of Advanced Medicine (CIMA by its Spanish acronym).

Sandra Gerena Cortés, CIMA’s director of operations, noted that thanks to the use of generators, the center is still actively offering services in the emergency room and the administration area, as well as in the laboratory. The only CIMA unit that for now has suspended its functions because of the blackouts is the X-ray division due to the complexity of the equipment.

The good news for residents announced by the mayor was that as long as the blackout lasts, people who need to charge batteries for medical equipment or respiratory aid equipment can go to the CIMA and the hospital’s personnel will gladly assist them. According to data from LUMA, the average Puerto Rican resident endures 7.6 outages a year. Many on the island claim meanwhile that electrical service hasn’t improved much since LUMA took over two years ago.

FEMA allocates $151.6 million for hospital

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) allocated $151.6 million to El Maestro Hospital, an institution that has served the communities of San Juan since 1960, for permanent work on its structure due to damage following the impact of Hurricane Maria, FEMA announced in a press release Sunday.

Following the award, the hospital will be able to address repairs that include the installation of a central air conditioning system for the entire building.

It will also replace parts of the infrastructure and electrical equipment, remedy mold problems, repair the stucco and paint the structure.

The award includes nearly $6.2 million to prevent similar damage from future weather events. Among the measures, the roof slope will be corrected to improve drainage, and windows and doors will be

replaced with high-impact resistant units.

“Hospital institutions are part of the country’s essential services, especially during the emergency season,” Federal Disaster Recovery Coordinator José G. Baquero said. “This award to El Maestro Hospital will support a strengthened and suitable infrastructure that will sustain the work of health professionals and the medical services that have been offered here for over 60 years.”

The hospital’s executive director, Yarimir Rodríguez Díaz, noted that the institution is located in an extremely privileged area, since it is in the center of Hato Rey, next to Las Américas highway and shopping malls.

The residents of some six neighboring homes for the elderly — such as Égida del Maestro, La Merced, Perpetuo Socorro and Égida de los Abogados — also benefit from the services of the medical institution.

Keishla Rodríguez’s sister: Verdejo expressed no emotion when hearing guilty verdict

Keishla Rodríguez Ortiz’s sister, Bereliz, said Sunday that Félix Verdejo Sánchez showed no expression when he heard the guilty verdict for the kidnapping that culminated in her sister’s death, as well as the death of her sister’s unborn baby, according to local press reports.

“If with the macabre photos they showed of her he did not have [any expression], what will he have now,” Bereliz Rodríguez said in a video she posted on her social networks.

The woman also shared photos in which Verdejo is seen in a kitchen and sends a message to the former boxer.

“On November 3 [sentencing day] I need you to tell me what you got out of all this,” she said. “What did you expect? What good was it? I have so much to tell you.”

The young woman revealed that she has kept a shirt that Keishla wore to support Verdejo before his fights.

“Before he got in the ring he would call her and she had this shirt on,” Bereliz posted, showing the piece of clothing.

She said she decided to save it to burn it or throw it over the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge when the trial was over. However, once the process was completed, she made another decision.

“It’s not worth it,” she said. “Like what … Throwing it into the garbage is enough.”

On Friday night, a jury of nine men and three women found the former boxer, who fought under the ring moniker “El Diamante,” guilty of causing the death of Rodríguez Ortiz and the death of her unborn child on April 29, 2021.

The jury found that Verdejo, along with co-defendant Luis Antonio Cádiz Martínez, helped each other commit a kidnapping that resulted in the deaths of Rodríguez Ortiz and her unborn child. There was no agreement

among the jury on the charges of carjacking that culminated in the 27-year-old woman’s death and the use of a firearm to commit the crime.

“We stand in full solidarity with the family of Keishla Rodríguez Ortiz and all those in the community who sought justice for this senseless, cruel and heinous act of premeditated and cold-blooded violence against Keishla and her unborn child,” U.S. Attorney W. Stephen Muldrow said after the verdict. “I also commend the hard work, dedication, and tireless pursuit of justice by federal and local law enforcement, including the FBI, Puerto Rico Police, Puerto Rico Department of Public Safety, Puerto Rico Institute of Forensic Sciences, and Puerto Rico Department of Justice, as well as the prosecutors and professional staff of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.”

Joseph González, the FBI special agent in charge of the San Juan Field Office, added that “[t]here is damage that can never be repaired, even with a fair verdict.”

“In cases like these, all we can do is give it our all in the pursuit of justice,” he said. “Today I can say that my team did exactly that, and I am proud of their dedication. I would like to thank the United States Attorney’s Office for the incredible work and the jury for their service. We did what we do and justice was served.”

According to court documents in the case, on the morning of April 29, 2021, Verdejo executed a premeditated plan to murder Keishla Rodríguez Ortiz and her unborn child by picking

up Rodríguez Ortiz in her Dodge Durango, where, with the help of Cádiz Martínez, he beat her, injected her with drugs and then tied her with metal wire to a cinder block. Then, the former boxer drove the victim to Teodoro Moscoso Bridge and, with the help of Cádiz Martínez, threw Rodríguez Ortiz into the San José Lagoon. When her body did not sink, Verdejo threw himself into the lagoon to kill both Rodríguez Ortiz and her unborn child, the court documents said.

That same day, the victim’s mother reported her missing after the woman did not arrive at work in a pet grooming shop, so a Pink Alert was activated for the first time.

Verdejo faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison for each conviction. The reading of the sentence was scheduled for November 3 at 2 p.m.

The trial process involved a review of 40 testimonies, photographs, videos, text messages and expert documents as part of the evidence against Verdejo.

The former boxer was represented by attorneys Jason González Delgado and Gabriela José Cintrón Colón.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Gottfried, chief of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Violent Crime and Homeland Security Section, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeanette Collazo took the case to trial.

Relatives of the victim arrived at the courthouse on Friday dressed in white.

Rep. Hau backs measure in US House to eliminate barriers to academic success

District 29 (Cidra and Cayey) Rep. Gretchen Marie Hau

Irizarry, who is participating in the summer conference of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators of the United States (NHCSL), announced over the weekend the approval of a motion in favor of education made by the caucus at its yearly meeting.

As vice president of the Banking and Insurance Committee in the island House of Representatives, Hau is part of the NHCSL’s executive committee.

At the event, Hau joined with the former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi (2007-2011 and 2019-2023), and seconded a resolution whereby the NHCSL affirmed its commitment to eliminating barriers to academic success by adopting the community school approach that connects students, parents, school staff, and the community with the services required for students to succeed.

“The measure also calls on Congress to enact the Full-Service Community School Expansion Act or similar legislation to provide states and jurisdictions with the funding needed to

expand existing community schools and establish new ones in a sustainable manner,” Hau said.

About 10,000 community schools in the United States represent some 6% to 8% of all public schools in the nation, and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the Community Schools Coalition have requested funding for 25,000 community schools by 2025.

“The AFT has a local affiliation with the Puerto Rico Teachers Association,” Hau said. “Having the presence of former speaker Nancy Pelosi in this process has been very positive in terms of her experience, expertise and contacts in favor of Puerto Rico.”

Pelosi currently represents California’s 11th congressional district. She was the first woman to preside over the U.S. House and led the Democratic caucus from 2003 to 2023.

“Given the reality we live in terms of education in Puerto Rico, for me it is crucial to work together with federal and local authorities to improve educational services on the island,” Hau said. “Specifically, now that we have a new secretary appointed in the Department of Education, I want to contribute to the process and present to her initiatives that have been successful. Cayey woman celebrates her 104th birthday

For many people, a birthday -- any birthday -- has significant meaning, while for others it may not mean much at all. Regardless of whatever someone’s perception is of birthdays, they in fact mark another year of a person’s life on planet earth. Another spin around the sun, in other words. Some people have spun around the sun more than 100 times, and to many of us this is a difficultto-fathom event, when compared to having only experienced birthdays six,17, 27, 34 or 47 times.

Based on a 2022 estimate by the United Nations, there are 593,000 centenarians around the world and Emilia Rivera Espada is one of them. The Cayey resident has completed four additional spins around the sun after turning 100.

Cayey Mayor Rolando Ortíz Velázquez announced late last week that Rivera Espada’s family celebrated her 104th birthday with the enthusiasm that the occasion deserved.

“Without a doubt, today’s positive news is that tomorrow, Saturday, July 29, this beloved family once again celebrates the honor and joy of spending another year with this extraordinary woman, who has already lived a century,” the mayor stated on Friday.

Rivera Espada is recognized in Cayey as one of the town’s truly exemplary residents. Born in 1919, she is originally from the Barrio Matón Abajo neighborhood in the Cartagena sector. For as long as she can remember she has always loved gardening, especially when it comes to planting roses. She now enjoys five generations of the Rivera and Espada family, which makes her the oldest person in her neighborhood by far.

“We want to congratulate her children Bienvenida,

Jorge, Félix, Estanislao, Augusto and Juan,” the mayor said. “We also want to congratulate her grandchildren, great grandchildren and other family members. All of them are great examples of the love and education cultivated by Emilia within them.”

Somewhat oddly, not much has changed in 104 years, because in the year Rivera Espada was born, another pandemic took place -- the influenza pandemic known as the Spanish Flu. Moreover, on Oct. 11, 1919, when Rivera Espada was merely a baby of four months, Puerto Rico suffered a magnitude 7.3 earthquake on the Rossi-Forel scale (which was used during those times). According to historical records, the earthquake struck at around 10:14 a.m. on the day of Saint Fermín in the Catholic calendar, and so it was thereafter associated with that day.

In 1919 and throughout 1920, the United States military built three steel towers in Cayey, each measuring 620 feet tall. The towers were built with the purpose of establishing a high-powered radio station on the island. Decades later, the towers were dismantled.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Rivera Espada was born right after peace came to the world, considering that the day before she was born, the Treaty of Versailles was signed in Paris, which put an end to the First World War.

Bill filed in US House would strengthen island legislation against being revoked by fiscal board

Speaker of the House of Representatives Rafael “Tatito” Hernández Montañez announced on Sunday that U.S. Rep. Lori Chávez-DeRemer (R-Ore.) introduced House Resolution (HR) 4853 to amend the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) to strengthen the autonomy of the Budget Office of the Puerto Rico Legislature (OPAL by its Spanish acronym).

“The Oregon congresswoman presented HR 4853, historic legislation that seeks to guarantee that the measures turned into law, after approval in the House and Senate together with the signature of the Governor, do not become stillborn due to procedural technicalities, including the government not effectively demonstrating the fiscal impact of the legislation to the [Financial] Oversight [and Management] Board,” Hernández Montañez said in a written statement.

The House speaker said the executive branch is solely responsible for carrying out the fiscal impact projections of proposed laws. HR 4853 seeks to broaden participation and analysis by requiring the oversight board to recognize the budgetary impact reports issued by the OPAL, Hernández Montañez noted.

“This measure, filed by our friend Chávez-DeRemer, is part of the efforts that we have been working on in Wash-

ington, D.C. in both congressional delegations to forge and give legitimacy to the island’s institutional structures to accelerate the exit of the [oversight board], and with the exercise of good governance, preventing the Government of Puerto Rico from falling into another bankruptcy in the future,” he said.

Hernández Montañez gave as an example what happened with the amendments to the Labor Reform, the improvements to patient benefits, and the changes to the health insurance industry, which fell through because they did not receive the necessary fiscal analysis by the executive branch, making it possible for the oversight board to annul the amendments and extending the controversy in the federal courts.

“If this measure is approved, OPAL, as an independent and non-partisan entity, will play a crucial role at the federal level in the analysis and objective evaluation of all fiscal public policy initiatives approved in Puerto Rico,” the House speaker said. “It is our duty to require that the Financial Oversight Board consider these reports, so HR 4853 seeks to ensure that accurate fiscal data and detailed economic analysis inform budget and fiscal decisions. With this amendment, both the Executive Branch and the Legislature will be able to be part of the PROMESA process of fiscal compliance, specifically in its section 204.”

In border towns, a ‘dangerous combination’ of heat and water cutoffs

On a blistering morning last week, the kitchen sink in Kathy Quilatan’s house was delivering only sputtering water. With temperatures climbing into triple digits most afternoons these days, she knew exactly what she had to do to keep her two young children, ages 2 and 6, from overheating. She gathered several plastic containers and set out on a quest for water.

The neighbors could not help: Problemplagued delivery systems have meant that entire neighborhoods like Quilatan’s along the Texas border have gone without water for hours or even days during the brutal heat that has gripped much of the Southwest this summer.

“Not having water under this extreme heat is a dangerous combination,” Quilatan said. “Can you believe that this is life in America?”

For families like the Quilatans who live in colonias, the impoverished settlements outside established cities that have always existed somewhat apart from the rest of Texas, just the ability to cool off has become a painful reminder of the social divide prevalent in border communities.

Even in Texas, where people are accustomed to sweltering weather, the unrelenting triple-digit temperatures of the past few weeks have taken a toll, especially in low-income Latino neighborhoods like this one, where people cannot afford to turn on air conditioners. In some parts of the state, the prolonged heat wave has led to a spike in heat-related fatalities and emergency room visits.

The disparity is more visible in the colonias, mostly unincorporated neighborhoods that often lack such basic services as running water, sewer systems, paved roads and streetlights.

“We take for granted the public light and drainage because we live in the city, while folks in colonias do not have those services. But now with the water, that’s just pushing it,” said Marco Lopez, an activist with La Union del Pueblo Unido, an organization that seeks to improve living conditions in poor neighborhoods. “A lot of the times when we think of lack of access to water, we think of third-world countries, not here in South Texas.”

The excessive heat this summer has been deadly in Texas. The state has recorded at least 36 heat-related deaths so far this year, but officials warned that the figure was likely to rise, as it could take weeks to release a cause of death. In the border city of Laredo, 10 people died from heat-related problems between June 15 and July 3.

Hospitals in the Rio Grande Valley, which has many colonias, have seen a surge of patients seeking relief from the heat. Since June, at least 166 patients have sought help in emergency rooms run by the South Texas Health System, a 70% increase from the same seven-week period a year ago, said Tom Castañeda, a spokesperson for the system.

Doctors have been urging people to limit their time exposed to the heat and stay hydrated.

But Quilatan said she did not always have those options.

The colonias — the word is Spanish for rural neighborhoods — have existed since the 1950s, when developers created unincorporated subdivisions with little to no infrastructure. Low-cost houses and plots of land there were sold to low-income, mostly Latino buyers, many of them recent immigrants. Today, an estimated 840,000 people live in colonias, in housing ranging from modern-looking suburban houses to partially built shacks.

Three years ago, Quilatan and her family moved to a colonia called Pueblo de Palmas, not far from McAllen. At first, moving from the nearby city of Mission to a colonia seemed like an opportunity to gain a toehold on the real estate ladder. The family of four pays about $500 in monthly rent, with an option to buy the house from the landlord.

Her house, while modest, is a well-main-

tained two-bedroom decorated with exposed bricks. She knows she is luckier than most. Some of the houses near her lack a roof or walls. Water pressure has always been spotty, she said, but the problems became more acute with the arrival of summer this year.

The water went out in mid-June and did not return until mid-July, she said. She quickly rallied her neighbors to pack meetings with the water district, Agua Special Utility District, to complain about the lack of water, to no avail. They were not given answers, she said. When the water did come back on, residents were advised to boil it before using it. “You could not trust the water when we needed it the most, if we had it at all,” she said.

Representatives with the utility district did not respond to requests for comment, but a notice on the district’s website said a boil advisory was required by the state as a result of “reduced distribution system pressure.”

On the day this week when she noticed her pipes struggling to produce water, Quilatan headed to her parents’ house, which was less than 2 miles away and had running water. She pulled the containers out of her trunk and filled them with water from a garden hose. She said she would use the water to bathe her children before they tried to sleep that night.

By the time she returned home, the thermometer read 103 degrees. She hauled the

heavy water containers back out of the trunk. “I don’t even have to boil it,” she said. “I can just leave it outside, and it’ll be ready by the time I need it.”

For all of the hardships, colonias do offer some low-income people an opportunity to buy a plot of land and build a house over time, often moving in before it is completed.

Noemi Hernandez, 56, paid $22,500 in 2001 for a lot in a small colonia called Salida del Sol. Her house has now grown to two stories but remains unfinished, though it has cost her only about $80,000, far below the average price of $260,000 for a home in Hidalgo County. “There is no way I would have been able to buy a house in the city for that price,” Hernandez said.

She struggles to keep her home cool as the sun heats the thick concrete walls. She has been keeping her doors and windows open except in her bedroom, where she has a small air conditioner.

“We try not to turn it on all the time,” she said. Her monthly electric bill, she said, jumps to $380 from $250 in the summer.

Low water pressure and boil notices are common problems in her colonia, too. “I’m afraid to take a shower or even splash water on my face,” she said. “We were told not to let water get into our eyes.”

Over the years, local, state and federal officials have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in public works projects, but the needs sometimes seem overwhelming.

“I’m trying to do everything that I can do,” said Everardo Villarreal, a county commissioner who represents the colonias where Kathy Quilatan and Hernandez live. “It takes unity. It takes a lot of us together to be able to help.”

Trump threatens Republicans who don’t help him exact vengeance

Former President Donald Trump lashed out at Republicans in Congress while campaigning in Pennsylvania on Saturday, threatening members of his party who do not share his appetite for pursuing corruption investigations against President Joe Biden and his family — and for retribution.

In a litany of grievances about his deepening legal woes and the direction of the country, the twice-indicted former president cast GOP holdouts as meek during a rally in Erie, criticizing their response to what he described as politically motivated prosecutions against him.

“The Republicans are very high class,” he said. “You’ve got to get a little bit lower class.”

And then Trump, the overwhelming front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, put party members on notice.

“Any Republican that doesn’t act on Democratic fraud should be immediately primaried,” said Trump, to the roaring

approval of several thousand supporters at the Erie Insurance Arena. Throughout the night he referenced the case against Hunter Biden and accused the president of complicity in his son’s troubles.

“I think he’s being persecuted,” he said of the former president.

Ruth Jenkins, 61, a Republican from Rochester, New York, who works for a Wegmans grocery store, said that she did not believe that Trump had been motivated to run for president to avoid criminal liability.

“Well, who wouldn’t want to be kept out of prison?” she said, claiming that the latest charges against Trump were the latest attempt to shift attention away from the case against the president’s son.

As Trump prepared to take the stage, campaign workers helped fill in an empty section near the back of the arena, which had been configured to seat 8,000.

The playlist for the rally featured “Try That in a Small Town,” the Jason Aldean hit that was filmed at the site of a lynching and pulled from Country Music Television amid criticism.

With Trump as its standard-bearer, the Republican Party has watched Democrats in Pennsylvania secure high-profile victories in the last year, including flipping a U.S. Senate seat, holding on to the governor’s office and gaining control of the statehouse.

In 2020, Trump lost the battleground state by nearly 82,000 votes to Biden, who was born there.

It was the first solo campaign event and the second public appearance for Trump since the Justice Department added charges against him in connection with his mishandling of classified documents after leaving office.

In a superseding indictment filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Florida, federal prosecutors presented evidence that Trump told the property manager of Mara-Lago, his private club and residence in Florida, that he wanted security camera footage there to be deleted.

Prosecutors also charged him, along with one of his personal aides, with conspiring to obstruct the government’s repeated attempts to reclaim the classified material.

On the same day that the additional charges were announced, Trump’s lawyers met with federal prosecutors to discuss another expected indictment, one centering on Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his actions during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

To Trump’s unflinching supporters gathered inside the arena, the cascade of indictments was a punchline — if not a badge of honor.

Edward X. Young, 63, a debt consolidation company consultant and part-time actor who was dressed like Elvis Presley, wore a T-shirt with a mock-up mug

Despite several courts rejecting his election lawsuits in Pennsylvania, Trump has continued to cling to falsehoods about results, including Saturday.

“We got screwed,” he said, baselessly claiming that news outlets had delayed their race calls because he had been ahead. “I said, ‘Why aren’t they calling Pennsylvania?’”

Trump, who spoke for more than 100 minutes, said that he still had not decided whether he would take part in the first Republican presidential debate, which will take place Aug. 23 and be televised by Fox News.

Trump said that there appeared to be little upside to debating on a “hostile” network — Fox News began to fall out of favor with the former president after it became the first major outlet to call Arizona for Biden in 2020 — and noted his commanding polling lead over his GOP opponents. His nearest competitor, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, trailed him by about 30 percentage points in national polls.

“If I don’t go to the debate, they say — I’m not saying this — they say the ratings are going to be very bad,” he said. “Should I do it or not?”

The crowd’s answer was resounding: “No.”

Reluctant to retire, leaders raise a tough question: How old is too old?

After a series of troubling moments this week, an uncomfortable question has become unavoidable, leaving voters, strategists and even politicians themselves wondering: Just how old is too old to serve in public office?

For years, like so many children of aging parents across America, politicians and their advisers in Washington tried to skirt that difficult conversation, wrapping concerns about their octogenarian leaders in a cone of silence. The omertà was enabled by the traditions of a city that arms public figures with a battalion of aides, who manage nearly all of their professional and personal lives.

“I don’t know what the magic number is, but I do think that as a general rule, my goodness, when you get into the 80s, it’s time to think about a little relaxation,” said Trent Lott, 81, a former Senate majority leader who retired at the spry age of 67 to start his own lobbying firm. “The problem is, you get elected to a six-year term, you’re in pretty good shape, but four years later you may not be so good.”

Two closely scrutinized episodes this week thrust questions about aging with dignity in public office out of the halls of Congress and into the national conversation.

On Wednesday, video of Sen. Mitch McConnell, 81, freezing for 20 seconds in front of television cameras reverberated across the internet and newscasts. Less than 24 hours later, another clip surfaced of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, 90, appearing confused when asked to vote in committee.

A political discussion on the issue of age has been building for months, as the country faces the possibility of a presidential contest between the oldest candidates in American history. President Joe Biden, 80, already the oldest president to sit in the White House, is vying for a second term, and Donald Trump, 77, is leading the Republican primary race.

“When I say we need to pass the baton to younger generations, I’m not talking about youthful generations,” said Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota, 54, the only Democrat in Congress to say that Feinstein should step down and that Biden should not seek reelection. “I’m talking about simply a reasonably less aged generation.”

McConnell’s stumble created a fresh opening for younger contenders to raise the

issue more aggressively. On Friday, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, 44, a top Republican presidential candidate, took a jab at the country’s political gerontocracy.

“You used to serve in your prime and then pass the baton to the next generation, and I think this generation has not really been as willing to do that,” DeSantis told right-leaning commentator Megyn Kelly, noting that Biden became a senator in 1973 — five years before DeSantis was born.

Notably, Trump, who would be 82 at the end of a second term, has defended Biden, saying that the president should not be discounted because of his age. “He is not an old man,” Trump posted this month on Truth Social, his social media platform.

“In actuality, life begins at 80!”

Doctors for Biden have said he is in good health. Less is known about Trump’s health since he left the White House.

After Biden was captured tripping over a sandbag in June, White House aides have grown increasingly sensitive to any insinuation that he is physically diminished.

He now regularly uses a shorter set of stairs to board Air Force One, an observation noted in a report by Politico that prompted aides to circulate 13 photos of his predecessors using stairs that appear to be of a similar length. He has not gone out to get

his beloved ice cream, or dropped into any other business for an impromptu visit with voters, since early May. The White House says Biden’s crowded travel schedule has not allowed for such stops this summer.

Some top advisers to Biden argue that his campaign should directly embrace his age as a political asset — and undeniable reality — rather than avoid the issue.

“Age is in fact a superpower,” said Jeffrey Katzenberg, 72, the Hollywood mogul whom Biden named as a co-chair of his campaign. “You can’t run from it because you’re 80 years old, right? There’s no denying it. I’ve been of the camp that believes strongly this is one of his greatest assets.”

Surveys indicate that voters disagree, with many Democratic voters worrying about Biden’s age amid Republican attacks. In polling conducted by YouGov last year, a majority of Americans supported age limits for elected officials but were split over the precise cutoff. A cap at age 60 would bar 71% of the Senate from holding office, while a limit of 70 would render 30% ineligible, an analysis by the firm found.

In North Dakota, a conservative activist this week began circulating petitions to force a statewide referendum next year that would prohibit anyone who would turn 81 by the end of their term from being elected

or appointed to congressional seats.

When asked, Biden dismisses worries about his age with jokes and boasts about his political experience. McConnell took a similar approach, telling reporters that he joked with the president about his health scare by saying that he had been “sandbagged” — a reference to how Biden laughed off his fall.

Of course, even a good quip can’t stop the realities of growing older. After McConnell’s freeze, reports raised additional questions about his health since he missed weeks of work for a concussion in March.

For her part, Feinstein, who has struggled with memory problems and a long absence from the Senate while she recovered from shingles, has appeared at times unable to respond to questions about her condition.

Part of the problem, former aides say, is the interdependent relationship between politicians and their staffs. If a senator retires, his or her entire office — several dozen employees — can be suddenly out of work.

And who wants to tell the boss that they are, perhaps, past their prime? It can be smoother to simply paper over the challenges by having aides craft policy, limit access to reporters and try to avoid unscripted moments.

“The Senate is such a warm, comforting place that you can live inside that bubble,” said Jim Manley, 62, who worked for Sens. Ted Kennedy and Harry Reid. “You have staff at beck and call, people opening doors for you all the time.”

While other industries have mandatory retirement ages, including some publicly traded companies and airlines, members of Congress have shown little desire for policies that would amount to voting themselves out of a job. Even voters can’t seem to agree on when enough is enough, remaining divided when asked to back a specific age limit.

The decision to leave a defining and powerful post is difficult, but the alternative — aging in the public eye — might be worse, former senators warned.

“It’s heartbreaking, embarrassing, but it’s up to the individual to come to grips with reality,” said Chuck Hagel, 77, a former Nebraska senator who left office in 2009. “The reality is we are not going backwards; we’re all getting old. At 77, versus 62 when I left the Senate, I have pains now that I didn’t even know I should have.”

How a Mexican lager quietly rose to become America’s bestselling beer

More beers in America are being paired with lime than ever before.

The story of how Modelo Especial, a Mexican lager, surpassed Bud Light as the top-selling beer in America predates the conservative backlash that Bud Light faced in April over a collaboration with a transgender influencer. The country’s steadily growing Hispanic population is only part of the story, too.

Rather, the factors that, for the better part of a decade, put Modelo on its triumphant track include an increasing preference among American consumers for imported, more expensive beer; a decadeold antitrust deal; and effective marketing campaigns aimed at attracting young, nonHispanic consumers to the Mexican beer.

“Most people in the beer industry have assumed Modelo was going to overtake Bud Light at some point,” said Bart Watson, chief economist for the Brewers Association, a trade group representing more than 6,000 American breweries. “It was a question of when, not if.”

The switch occurred at the start of June, after Bud Light had held the No. 1 spot for about 20 years. In the four-week period that ended July 8, Modelo made up 8.7% of retail beer sales in the United States, compared with Bud Light’s 6.8%, according to Nielsen IQ data analyzed by the consulting firm Bump Williams.

Bud Light’s ouster followed a conservative-led boycott that was set off when Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender influencer, posted a video on Instagram on April 1 promoting a Bud Light contest. The company has since dismissed two marketing executives and has reported plunging sales.

In an earnings call last month, Bill Newlands, the CEO of Constellation Brands, which owns Modelo, told investors that the beer’s rise to the top had happened “sooner than we anticipated.” Constellation’s beer business reported an 11% sales increase and a 7.5% increase in shipments for the quarter that ended May 31.

Constellation, which also owns the Mexican beers Corona and Pacifico, is perhaps the biggest winner in the U.S. beer market, as consumer tastes in alcohol have

shifted over the past decade.

Americans are drinking less beer than they used to, and the beer that they’ve grown to prefer is more expensive than Bud Light, Watson noted. Craft beers and imports, like Modelo, as well as hard seltzers and canned cocktails, have benefited from that shift at the expense of domestic brands, he added.

Younger drinkers tend to want something new or different, and usually more expensive, than the previous generation, said Nadine Sarwat, an alcoholic-beverage analyst at Bernstein Autonomous, a market research company. That trend has been going on for generations: When lighter beers like Bud Light began having their moment in the 1980s and 1990s, they, too, were more expensive than competitors.

“You don’t like to drink what your parents drink,” Sarwat said.

A demographic shift has also contributed to Modelo’s success. Hispanic people made up 19% of the U.S. population in 2021, up from 13% in 2000, according to the Census Bureau.

Along with that, Mexican products have gained “cultural appeal” among nonHispanic consumers, Sarwat said. And it’s not just beer: The volume of tequila and

mezcal — Mexican liquors — sold in the United States increased 273% from 2003 to 2022, according to the Distilled Spirits Council.

Mexico exports more beer to the United States than any other country by far. In 2022, it shipped in seven times the volume of the second-highest source of U.S. beer imports, the Netherlands.

From 2013 to 2022, the amount of Mexican beer imports doubled, according to data from the Beer Institute. Mexico carried the overall growth in U.S. beer imports during that time: Imports from everywhere else dropped more than 25%.

The biggest growth in Mexican beer sales over the past year has been in states closer to the Canadian border, which tend to have lower Hispanic populations, while growth in states closer to Mexico has lagged, according to one Nielsen IQ analysis of on-premise sales.

Modelo, however, has enjoyed greater success than other Mexican beers that sell in the United States, including Tecate and Dos Equis.

“That is proof that just having a Mexican beer brand isn’t enough,” Sarwat said.

Anheuser-Busch InBev, the maker of Bud Light, began to see the writing on the

wall a decade ago.

In 2012, the company sought to acquire Grupo Modelo, which brews Modelo and Corona. The Department of Justice under President Barack Obama sued to block that deal in early 2013, arguing that keeping Modelo beers independent from Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors, the two major U.S. beer companies, was critical to maintaining a fair market.

Bill Baer, who led the agency’s antitrust division at the time, said AnheuserBusch had sought the deal because it had been worried about Modelo’s rise. The parties reached a settlement in 2013, allowing the acquisition to go through as long as another company, which turned out to be Constellation, controlled Grupo Modelo’s U.S. operations.

“The result in the market was Constellation had every incentive as an independent owner to really promote the hell out of Corona and the other Modelo brands,” said Baer, now a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution. “And that’s exactly what has happened.”

Asked for comment, an AnheuserBusch spokesperson pointed to the fact that Bud Light sold more beer by volume in the United States than Modelo, which owes its sales lead in part to its higher price point.

In the decade since Constellation has owned Modelo, it has worked meticulously to refine the beer’s identity.

Promoting Modelo has been a balancing act of maintaining its authenticity to its Hispanic base while inviting new consumers, said Jim Sabia, head of Constellation’s beer division. In 2016, Modelo rolled out its first English-language advertising push, with a “fighting spirit” marketing campaign.

Since then, Constellation has sought to position Modelo as a game-day beer. In 2017, it became the sponsor of UFC, a deal that it has renewed and that is in the “low eight figures” annually, according to Sports Business Journal. That identity is distinct from Modelo’s sister brand, Corona, which Constellation has promoted as a beer to sip on the beach with friends.

“It takes a lot of time to truly find the essence of these brands,” Sabia said, “and when we finally get it, we stick with it.”

Wall Street ends week higher on US soft landing hopes

The financial markets are often a reflection of the prevailing economic sentiment, and in recent weeks, Wall Street has seen a surge in optimism. The key driver behind this buoyant atmosphere is the growing belief that the United States is headed for a soft landing. A soft landing refers to a gradual and controlled economic slowdown after a period of rapid growth, without plunging into a recession. In this article, we will delve into the factors contributing to this positive outlook and explore how Wall Street has responded to the promising economic indicators.

One of the pivotal factors contributing to the optimism surrounding a soft landing is the skillful management by the Federal Reserve. Over the past several months, the central bank has been meticulously adjusting its monetary policies to keep inflation in check while supporting the broader economy. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s forward guidance and transparent communication have reassured investors and businesses alike. By gradually tapering off asset purchases and signaling potential interest rate hikes, the Fed has shown its commitment to a stable and sustainable economic trajectory.

Steady Economic Growth

Another significant aspect of the soft landing hopes lies in the consistent economic growth observed in various sectors. Despite initial concerns of a post-pandemic slowdown, the US economy has demonstrated remarkable resilience. Strong consumer spending, a rebounding labor market, and a robust housing sector have all contributed to the positive GDP growth figures. Furthermore, the government’s continued investment in infrastructure and clean energy projects has added further fuel to the recovery fire.

Corporate Earnings Resilience

Corporate earnings have been a crucial barometer for market sentiment, and they have not disappointed. Many companies have exceeded analysts’ expectations, showcasing their adaptability and ability to thrive in uncertain times. This resilience has further bolstered investor confidence in the longevity of the economic expansion, supporting stock market gains.

Stock Market Rally

As expectations of a soft landing continue to solidify, Wall Street has experienced a remarkable rally. Major indices such as the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and the NASDAQ Composite have reached record highs, shattering previous records. Investors have embraced riskier assets, fueled by the belief that the bull market has more room to run. Tech stocks, in particular, have been standout performers, as innovation and digital transformation remain at the forefront of economic growth.

Sector Rotation

The soft landing hopes have triggered a significant shift in sectoral preferences. Investors have rotated out of some pandemic darlings, such as stay-at-home technology stocks, and moved into sectors more closely tied to economic expansion, such as financials, industrials, and energy. This sectoral rotation reflects a more optimistic outlook for the broader economy, as investors anticipate higher demand and economic activity in the coming months.

Foreign Investment Inflow

Wall Street’s rally and optimism surrounding a soft landing have not been confined to domestic investors alone. Foreign investors have poured money into US assets, considering them relatively safe and offering attractive returns compared to other regions. This inflow of foreign investment has further propelled the stock market higher, adding fuel to the bullish sentiment.

Cautionary Notes

While the prevailing sentiment on Wall Street may be overwhelmingly positive, there are always risks and potential pitfalls to consider. Investors must remain vigilant and mindful of the following factors:

Inflation Pressures: Despite the Fed’s efforts, inflation has been a persistent concern throughout the recovery. If inflationary pressures continue to surge, the central bank may have to respond with more aggressive rate hikes, potentially jeopardizing the soft landing scenario.

Geopolitical Uncertainties: Global events, such as trade disputes, geopolitical tensions, or unexpected natural disasters, can quickly alter market dynamics. Investors should be prepared for unforeseen developments that could disrupt the current optimistic trajectory.

Amid the counterattack’s deadly slog, a glimmer of success for Ukraine

For 10 days, Ukrainian marines fought street by street and house by house to recapture the southeastern village of Staromaiorske, navigating artillery fire, airstrikes and hundreds of Russian troops.

The Russians put up a ferocious defense, but that ended Thursday when they folded and the Ukrainians claimed victory. “Some ran away, some were left behind,” said an assault commander from Ukraine’s 35th Marine Brigade, who uses the call sign Dikyi, which means Wild. “We were taking captives,” he added.

The recapture of Staromaiorske, a small village that is nonetheless critical to Ukraine’s southern strategy, was such a welcome development for Ukraine that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced it himself.

The counteroffensive has largely been a brutal lesson for Ukrainian troops, who have struggled to seize back territory across the southern region of Zaporizhzhia. In two months, Ukrainian troops have advanced less than 10 miles at any point along the region’s 100-mile front.

Victories, such as the one at Staromaiorske, represent a potential breakthrough in the fighting, Ukrainian officials said, perhaps opening the way for a broader push by their country’s forces.

Ukraine is focused on two main southward thrusts, with the aim of cutting off Russian resupply routes. One line of attack goes through Staromaiorske toward the city of Berdiansk on the Azov Sea, and another, farther west, toward the city of Melitopol.

Both cities command strategic transit routes for Russian forces occupying southern Ukraine and Crimea.

For weeks, Ukrainian artillery and longrange missiles have been pounding Russian supply lines and rear bases in an effort to break their operational capability and undermine Russian morale.

Rockets fired from an American-made HIMARS mobile launcher surprise drivers on country roads near the front line as Ukrainian units attack targets deep behind Russian lines.

As Ukrainian forces deploy Westernsupplied weapons, Russian troops are making use of deadly new tactics and weapons of their own, including attack drones and remote-detonated mines.

In Staromaiorske, Russian soldiers dug bunkers underneath the village’s houses with multiple exits so a house would erupt like

an anthill when under attack, said Dikyi. He lost one of his best men, a 27-year-old called Vyacheslav, who used the call sign Bandit, in an assault on such a house, he said.

The key to the Ukrainian success in the village, he said, was wearing down the Russian soldiers’ will to fight. The first sign of the Russian collapse was when 20 soldiers abandoned their position after complaining that reinforcements had failed to arrive, he said.

From intercepts of Russian communications and interrogations of prisoners, the Ukrainian forces knew that their opponents were taking casualties and that some were refusing to fight.

“They were panicking,” Dikyi said. The Ukrainians redoubled their attack with a frontal assault with two battalions along four streets.

As officials celebrated Ukraine’s progress in Staromaiorske, troops elsewhere on the ground said Russian defenses and firepower remained formidable and in places impassable.

A soldier at a medical post, awaiting evacuation for a concussion, recently described how his battalion had been decimated when it came under Russian artillery and tank fire. His brigade, the 23rd, was one of nine newly formed, Western-trained units prepared and equipped for the counteroffensive. But the brigade, he said, had been

thrown into the fight without sufficient artillery support and had been unable to defend themselves against Russian firepower.

In one battle in which his unit took part, Ukrainian soldiers attacked in 10 Americanmade MaxxPro armored vehicles, but only one came back, he said. He showed photographs of the damaged vehicles, ripped open and burned out, which he said had been hauled back to a repair base. The soldier declined to give his name for fear of getting into trouble with his superiors.

“They were hit by anti-tank fire,” he said. “They hit them and they kept hitting. They were burned out. The guys did not survive.”

Later, as they sheltered in a captured Russian bunker, his unit came under attack by mortar fire and grenade launchers, he said. Moments before the bunker was destroyed by a Russian tank, he added, his unit escaped.

“If we had stayed 10 minutes longer, we would not be alive,” he said.

The soldier lost a 22-year-old friend, Stas, in the shelling the day before, he said, adding that in just over a month, his battalion had suffered so many dead and wounded that only 10 men remained at the front line.

Another soldier, who joined last year and asked to be identified only by his first name, Oleksiy, said his unit had taken heavy losses as Russian troops directed artillery fire

and aerial bombs onto their positions.

“We were shot like on a shooting range,” he said. “A drone was flying above us and correcting the artillery fire.” Their positions were in former Russian positions, hemmed in by minefields, he said, and the Russian forces were able to keep them pinned down and under constant drone surveillance.

Soldiers were running out of ammunition and water but could only sneak in and out of their positions in ones or twos, on foot, when the light was poor just before dawn and at dusk, he said.

The Ukrainian troops, Oleksiy added, were unable to suppress the Russian firepower. “At first, we had artillery support, and then we ran out,” he said. “We need more weapons.”

He added: “If the troops knew we had a good supply and coordinated support from behind, we would take more territory.”

Interviews with Ukrainian soldiers and a review of military surveillance footage from a recent attack indicate that many Ukrainian units are sustaining heavy losses.

A group with special operations training, deployed last month to storm Russian positions in a village on the western part of the front, took such heavy casualties in four days of assaults that they had to pull out without success.

After their armored vehicles were largely destroyed by artillery strikes on the first day, they revised their plan to approach the village on foot through a tree line that had been mined. The Ukrainians cleared a narrow path with demining explosives and the first soldiers reached the Russian positions and dropped down into a trench.

Drone footage of the event showed what happened next. Explosions suddenly detonated inside the trenches and other strikes hit soldiers on the edge of the tree line. The video footage has been verified by The New York Times.

“The trenches were mined,” said the assault commander, who uses the call sign Voskres, short for Resurrection. “Our guys started jumping in the trenches and blowing up,” he added. The Russian forces were watching, and they remotely detonated the mines, he said.

Those who managed to avoid the mines came under attack from multiple Russian kamikaze drones. “It seemed like they had a drone for each person,” he said. “The amount of equipment the Russians have, had we known, it was like mission impossible.”

Several weeks later, the village remains in Russian hands.

It’s been a hellish summer for the Mediterranean. And it’s not over.

As a family sat vigil over a coffin containing the body of an elderly relative, the wooded hills around their apartment building in Palermo, Italy, burned from wildfires. Winds blew the blazes closer, torching cars, dumpsters, sheds and electricity poles. Then the flames licked the apartment building, forcing its inhabitants to flee.

“We wanted to leave the house, but then the flames were behind the door,” a resident told Live Sicilia television. She said she and her family wrapped their faces in wet towels and, looking for a way out, “knocked on the door where there was the cadaver.” They all managed to escape before the coffin and the rest of the house went up in flames.

Things could hardly be worse for Italy and its Mediterranean neighbors this month. Wildfires and successive heat waves transformed their summer paradises into ghoulish hellscapes. Fires in Greece caused wartimescale airlifts of tourists and ammunition depots to explode. Sicilian churches burned with the relics of saints inside them. And if it was not the heat, it was hail — the size of billiards in northern Italy — as the country ricocheted between weather extremes.

It was bad enough for those who lived there. But the many tourists who had come looking for a summer holiday found an inferno, and there was more than a hint of buyer’s remorse.

“This was not a good idea,” said Maria Turkovic, 64, from Bosnia, as she prepared for a 2 p.m. tour of the Colosseum in the middle of the heat wave. She sought the shade of a short bush across from the landmark as the temperature hovered around 100 degrees Fahrenheit and a nearby ambulance checked the blood pressure of another tourist.

“My head is burning,” she said. Rather than a vacation, she said she felt trapped in a “nightmare.”

Even as the Mediterranean’s high fever finally broke this past week thanks to the influx of North Atlantic air, the realization that it was not even August — when new bouts of extreme heat are anticipated — dampened any sense of relief. Tour operators, officials and tourists across the region are wondering what happens when a preferred destination for summer getaways becomes a place you absolutely must get away from in the summer.

Countries like Italy and Greece, which

increasingly depend on tourism — particularly summer tourism — are staring at a bleak and smoke-filled future, while the damp and chilly places normally shunned by travelers see a future in the sun.

Tourism would drop by 9% in the Greek Ionian Islands in a world that reached 4 degrees Celsius of warming, according to a European Commission report published this year, but it would increase by about 16% in western Wales.

“Between the fires, the lack of energy and the broken Catania airport, we are living a nightmare,” said Italy’s civil protection minister, Nello Musumeci, who added that the country was “split in two, between hail and fires,” and was “at the mercy of tropicalization.”

“In the face of climatic phenomenon of this type,” he said, “either we change approach, or we will be counting the dead.”

Heat is of course nothing new to this part of the world. For centuries, natives of the southern Mediterranean have coped with the brutal afternoon heat by altering hours, hiding behind the thick walls of their homes and sealing the shutters.

But that seems to no longer suffice. Locals are instead shuddering as the toll of the heat causes hospitals to fill up with the old and stricken, and televisions now routinely broadcast tips on staying cool. For tourists, sightseeing in July has become a form of torture. “My Summer Vacation” essays promise to be horror stories.

“It feels like you are sweating all the time,” said Shelina Radvan, 29, a tourist from Canada, who sat near the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy, during the heat wave.

“Many apartments don’t have the AC here.”

Locals shifted from being vendors and tour guides to acting as front-line health care workers for wilting tourists.

“You need to cool off; lower your temperature; replenish liquids, sugar, vitamins,” said Alessandro Simoni, whose family has for generations run the grattachecca, or flavored shaved ice stand, just off the Tiber Island in Rome. He said he repeatedly had to bring sugar water to tourists who had collapsed in the heat, and he now felt like “the neighborhood nurse.”

July is poised to be Earth’s hottest month ever. According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, a European Union-funded research institution, the first three weeks of the month, when an African anticyclone hovered above much of the region like a heat lamp, temperatures in Italy reached as high as 118 degrees. Few experts think that record will last long.

“A foretaste of the future,” said Petteri Taalas, the secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization.

Greece registered its longest and most unrelenting heat wave since people started keeping track. Outside work was banned in the afternoon heat. Archaeological sites were closed. Some 400 wildfires illuminated satellite photographs and devastated olive groves and pine forests, as well as homes, farms and flocks.

Greek authorities evacuated about 20,000 tourists from the island of Rhodes in an operation that the British news media compared with the evacuation of Dunkirk. The government was exploring issuing holiday vouchers and compensation packages to bring back the tourists who were chased from Rhodes.

The death toll in Greece hit five, including two pilots of a water-bombing plane that crashed while trying to put out the fires. On Thursday afternoon, wildfires torching the center of Greece reached a military warehouse, setting off enormous explosions of ammunition and prompting evacuations of residents and tourists.

In Madrid, the few people out at midday in the Barrio de las Letras avoided the embedded quotations from Quixote, blinding in the sun, and walked in the slivers of shade alongside buildings.

In Sicily, wildfires forced the closure of the island’s two main airports, Palermo and Catania. The island’s governor, Renato Schifani, declared a state of emergency and lamented arsonists, “crazy people” compounding the problem, and the relics that were consumed by fire.

“With a heart in tears, it saddens us to tell you that little remains of the bodies of Benedict the Moor and the Blessed Matteo di Agrigento,” the parish priest wrote on Facebook after fires engulfed the church of Santa Maria di Gesù in Palermo. When Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella visited the scene Friday, a firefighter told him “it was hell.”

On Friday, Pope Francis sent his thoughts of compassion to the victims of climate change, including what Cardinal Pietro Parolin, his second in command, called “grave disasters.”

Those disasters have not just been fires and the insufferable heat. The extreme weather turned the sky into a menace for those who thought they could seek refuge in the mountains, too.

In Italy’s northern provinces, whipping winds and hail larger than tennis balls battered pedestrians, demolished windows and cars, felled hundreds of trees, wiped out orchards and smashed the nose of a plane traveling to the United States, forcing an emergency landing. In Calabria, a 98-yearold man died as the wildfires consumed his home in the Aspromonte mountains.

In Florence, the skin on the shoulders of Michaela Polášková, 46, was blistered as she waited in line in the sun to enter a cathedral.

“We went to the mountains because the beach was too hot for us, but still, I got sunburned,” she said. She could not sleep at night.

“It’s no good,” she lamented. “We love Italy, but the summer is too much for us.”

Residents watched a fire sweep across a hillside near Palermo in Sicily on Wednesday.

Canada is ravaged by fire. No one has paid more dearly than Indigenous people.

In early July, fierce wildfires fueled by dry conditions in northern Quebec laid waste to large swaths of spruce forest, destroying cabins and tourist camps. The fires also cut off transportation to isolated Indigenous communities over the region’s lone paved road, a 370mile stretch of highway with little or no cell reception.

Before evacuation orders were issued, residents who tried to leave along the Billy Diamond Highway, as the road is known, encountered flames and smoke that cast a darkof-night pall in the afternoon.

“I honestly wasn’t sure we’d make it out,” said Joshua Iserhoff, 45, a member of the Cree nation of Nemaska who was forced to turn back with his wife and two children and who, like other residents, eventually found another way out.

“The wind was so ferocious it almost picked up the vehicle,” he said, calling the drive a “traumatic experience.”

Since May, hundreds of wildfires across Canada have burned more than 47,000 square miles of forest, an area the size of New York state, and have displaced more than 25,000 Indigenous residents from British Columbia to Nova Scotia, according to government officials.

The blazes have taken a particularly devastating toll on Indigenous communities because they are on the front line of many fires and depend on forests for food. Homes in these communities are in remote areas that are not a firefighting priority since they are sparsely populated and have few buildings.

The country’s Department of Indigenous Services has paid $55 million so far to communities affected by wildfires.

Canada’s wildfires, whose frequency and intensity are linked to climate change, have set records for the amount of land they have burned and have sent vast plumes of smoke across the country and into the United States.

As of Friday, more than 1,000 fires were burning across Canada, with more than 600 of those out of control, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center.

Evacuations of Indigenous people ordered by community leaders in tandem with government officials have lasted weeks, with families sometimes separated across hundreds of miles, sleeping in hotels and gyms.

Many have had to flee repeatedly, with a little more than a month left in Canada’s fire season.

In July, eight of the nine Cree communities in Quebec, with a collective population of about 21,000, were under total or partial evacuation orders.

Some residents were airlifted by commercial airliners or Chinook helicopters operated by the Canadian Royal Air Force. In some Cree communities, older people, young children and those with health issues were taken out by bus along hundreds of miles of gravel roads.

On an 11-hour bus ride from Nemaska to Quebec City, William Wapachee, 79, who said he had lung cancer, started coughing and had trouble breathing. Before reaching the city, he was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he received oxygen.

“I inhaled too much of that smoke,” Wapachee said.

“Before, if we had fire, it was only in one place,” he added. “Now it seems to be a fire here, a fire there, fire everywhere.”

Quebec has been hit by outbreaks of wildfires that are more common in western Canada, putting many Indigenous communities in the province at risk.

“I’ve never seen that level of evacuation in Cree Nation, simultaneous communities all at once,” said Mandy Gull-Masty, who, in 2021, became the first woman elected grand chief of the Cree Nation in Quebec. “Never has that happened before.”

In June, Gull-Masty was among roughly 1,000 residents of Waswanipi, an Indigenous community in northern Quebec, who were forced to leave after a large wildfire threatened the town.

“We are basically refugees of climate in this territory,” she said. “We are constantly escaping either risk of fire or impact of smoke in the community.”

Although no one has been killed by the fires that have threatened Indigenous communities, they have inflicted immeasurable damage on the forest ecology and cultural heritage,

disrupting a way of life that is reliant on hunting and fishing for food.

Many Indigenous communities, known as First Nations in Canada, occupy the country’s vast northern latitudes where the government’s policy is to let wildfires burn, except where they threaten towns or key infrastructure.

A single fire near the Quebec town of Radisson that started during an intense lightning storm on June 1 is still burning and is now 2 1/2 times bigger than the largest wildfire previously recorded in California, according to the interagency forest fire agency.

Such gigantic blazes have contributed to bands of heavy smoke that have blanketed large parts of the United States and led to warnings in early June about hazardous levels of smoke pollution across the Eastern Seaboard.

Kurtis Black, fire chief in Nemaska, was recently surveying Indigenous firefighters applying water to smoldering hot spots that have repeatedly flared up along a gravel road that leads to the Billy Diamond Highway.

“I don’t think these fires will stop until everything is burned,” Black said. “These fires are here to stay until fall gets here — or the snow.”

Gull-Masty, in a video interview, criticized the Quebec government’s policy to largely refrain from fighting wildfires in the province’s northern section. This year’s fires have caused major damage to Cree traplines, which are crucial for hunting and trapping in the fall and winter, she said.

“Our territory doesn’t have a super high population, and we don’t have a lot of infrastructure that needs to be protected,” Gull-Masty said. “But for us, our territory is our infrastructure.”

Quebec’s Wildfire Agency, in an email, defended its policy as necessary because of limited resources across such a vast boreal landscape.

On July 20, a period of rain had contained the fires and dissipated the smoke near Nemaska, allowing about 300 evacuees to return from hotels outside Quebec City.

But three days later the fires roared back and the skies again turned orange.

Black called for the full evacuation of a summer settlement used by the Cree that was near the fires. Freshly caught sturgeons were left drying on fish racks.

Diane Amy Tanoush recorded a video as she and other Indigenous people who had been living at the settlement loaded bags and coolers and put on N95 masks for the long boat ride to a landing across a lake.

“It’s starting to get dark,” she said.

“This is our fifth time evacuating.”

Republicans are resurrecting Trump’s Burisma lie

When House Republicans return from their recess this fall, they’re likely to have an item on their agenda besides pushing the government toward shutdown: impeaching Joe Biden. “You’ve got to get to the bottom of the truth, and the only way Congress can do that is go to impeachment inquiry,” the Republican House speaker, Kevin McCarthy, said Tuesday. Some Republicans are pretending that a mere inquiry doesn’t imply an actual impeachment, but it’s hard to imagine MAGA congresspeople being satisfied with an investigation that stops short of bringing charges.

“What I’m hearing from Republicans is that Speaker McCarthy basically has no choice,” Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said when I asked him whether impeachment was likely. “This is what they want.” And with yet another indictment of Donald Trump imminent, I suspect impeachment momentum will only accelerate. Amid the drama of a presidential front-runner facing multiple felony charges, Republicans are going to need counterprogramming.

To be clear, impeachment is not what all Republicans want: As The New York Times wryly noted, some in the party argue “that the House must find actual corruption or wrongdoing before lawmakers consider impeachment.” Given McCarthy’s very thin margins in the House, he may not have the votes to begin a process some of his

members are dreading. Nevertheless, with the Republican base clamoring for impeachment, McCarthy has clearly signaled it’s a live possibility. Which raises a question: Impeachment for what?

This is less obvious than it should be, at least if you’re not immersed in the Fox News cinematic universe. Democrats are largely tuning out the House’s lurid and shambolic investigatory hearings, which have so far featured photos of a naked Hunter Biden and a much-hyped star witness who turned out to be a fugitive indicted on charges of, among other things, arms trafficking and acting as an unregistered Chinese agent. Behind this circus, however, is something rather astonishing: A major part of the pretext for a possible impeachment of Joe Biden is exactly the same set of lies about Ukraine that helped convince Democrats to impeach Trump the first time.

Let’s recall why Trump tried to essentially extort Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The expresident wanted Zelenskyy’s help creating the false impression that a bribery scheme led Biden, as vice president, to call on the Ukrainian government to fire its prosecutor general, Viktor Shokin. In 2018, Rudy Giuliani dispatched two henchmen — both now convicted felons — to Ukraine to find proof that Biden had targeted Shokin to protect the energy company Burisma, which had put Biden’s son Hunter on its board.

Not surprisingly, Giuliani’s men came back emptyhanded. “Throughout all these months of work, the extensive campaigns and networking done by Trump allies and Giuliani associates, including the enormously thorough interviews and assignments that I undertook, there has never been any evidence that Hunter or Joe Biden committed any crimes related to Ukrainian politics,” one of the two men, Lev Parnas, wrote in a recent letter to the Republican chair of the Oversight Committee.

It’s true that Hunter Biden almost certainly owed his Burisma gig to his family name — a sleazy arrangement, if not an illegal or uncommon one. (See, for example, the $2 billion investment Jared Kushner received from a Saudi investment fund over the objections of the fund’s own advisers, which found the operations of Kushner’s firm “unsatisfactory in all aspects.”) Republicans have demonstrated, if it wasn’t clear already, that Hunter Biden is a deeply compromised figure who should never hold any position of public trust. But Joe Biden wasn’t acting in his son’s interest when he called for the removal of Shokin.

Shokin’s removal was a priority for Ukraine’s Western allies because he was, as The New York Times reported in 2016, “widely criticized for turning a blind eye to corrupt practices and for defending the interests of a venal and entrenched elite.” Among those Shokin was alleged to have protected was none other than Mykola Zlochevsky, head of Burisma. Anti-corruption activist Daria Kaleniuk told The Intercept that Shokin was fired for his failure to investigate the “corruption and economic crimes” of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, who was

deposed and fled to Russia, “and his close associates, including Zlochevsky.” It’s hard to see what Zlochevsky had to gain if Shokin were replaced by a prosecutor with more integrity.

Of course, that didn’t stop Trump from trying to manipulate Zelenskyy into opening an investigation into Biden, Shokin and Burisma, part of an effort to give weight to his smears of Biden. At the time of Trump’s first impeachment, those smears were repeatedly debunked. But now Republicans claim they have a reason for resurrecting them: House investigators recently discovered an FBI document from 2020 that mentions a confidential source claiming to have heard Zlochevsky bragging about paying the Bidens to deal with Shokin. According to the document, this confidential source claimed Zlochevsky had 17 recordings to back him up.

As Raskin points out, though, Trump’s Justice Department already scrutinized these claims and evidently found nothing worth acting on, and even some Republicans who eagerly hyped the recordings have since conceded they may not exist. Impeaching Biden over this kind of hearsay would be like impeaching Trump over the Steele dossier.

Nevertheless, there is a sort of logic to House Republicans’ impeachment plans. Part of their motivation, Raskin argues, is an attempt to ensure that Trump isn’t the only 2024 candidate carrying the stigma of impeachment. More than that, by impeaching Biden for Burisma, they’d be signaling that Trump, as president, would have been justified in asking Zelenskyy to investigate Biden. Republicans may not be able to expunge Trump’s impeachments, which the ex-president is reportedly demanding. But they could retroactively try to excuse the behavior that led to the first one.

And since the Republican aim is getting revenge and sowing confusion, rather than actually proving high crimes and misdemeanors, they may be able to use the obscurity of the allegations — and the need to plunge down various rabbit holes to understand them — to their advantage. Rather than make a specific case, Republicans are trying to foment the cynical sense that scandal surrounds Biden just as it does Trump. The point is not to hold anyone accountable for actual wrongdoing, but to parody the process of trying.

‘Barbie’ review: Out of the box and on the road

Can a doll with an ingratiating smile, impossible curves and boobs ready for liftoff be a feminist icon? That’s a question that swirls through Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” a live-action, you-go-girl fantasia about the world’s most famous doll. For more than half a century, Barbie has been, by turns, celebrated as a font of girlhood pleasure and play, and rebuked as an instrument of toxic gender norms and consumerist ideals of femininity. If Barbie has been a culture-war hot spot for about as long as it’s been on the shelves, it’s because the doll perfectly encapsulates changing ideas about girls and women: our Barbies, ourselves.

Gerwig carves a comic pathway into these representational thickets partly by means of mythology. In outline, the movie offers a savvy, updated riff on the Greek myth of Pygmalion, which has inspired myriad stories about men and the women they invent. In the original, a male sculptor creates and falls in love with a beautiful statue; in George Bernard Shaw’s play “Pygmalion” and in the Lerner-Loewe musical “My Fair Lady,” she’s a Cockney flower girl. In “Barbie,” by contrast, it’s the imaginations of the girls and women who play with the doll that give it something like life, a fitting shift for a movie that takes sisterhood as a starting point.

These imaginers first and foremost include Gerwig herself. The movie opens with a prelude that parodies the “dawn of

man” sequence in “2001: A Space Odyssey” (with girls, not ape-men), and then shifts to Barbie Land, a kaleidoscopic wonderland. There, Gerwig sets the scene and tone with Barbie (Margot Robbie) — who calls herself stereotypical Barbie — soon floating out of her Dreamhouse, as if she were being lifted by a giant invisible hand. It’s a witty auteurist flourish. The Mattel brand looms large here, but Gerwig, whose directorial command is so fluent she seems born to filmmaking, is announcing that she’s in control.

Written by Gerwig and her partner, Noah Baumbach, the movie introduces Barbie on yet another perfect day in Barbie Land, in which dolls played by humans exist in what resembles a toyland gated community. There, framed by a painted mountain range, Barbie and a diverse group of other Barbies rule, living in homes with few exterior walls. With their flat roofs, clean lines and pink décor — a spherical TV, Eero Saarinen-style tulip table and chairs — the overarching look evokes the era when Barbie first hit the market. It’s very Palm Springs circa 1960, an aesthetic that could be called bubble-gum midcentury modern.

Gerwig has fun in Barbie Land, and in her role as a friendly playmate, she works hard to ensure you do, too. She takes you for a leisurely spin, cranks the tunes, stages some old-school, Hollywood-style musical numbers and brings in those eternal sidekicks, the Kens (with a scene-stealing Ryan

Gosling chief among them). The production design (Sarah Greenwood) and costumes (Jacqueline Durran) offer ticklish pleasure but also underscore this place’s artificiality. Barbie, et al., are of our world and not, existing in a plasticky paradise that proves less hospitable when she begins having un-Barbie thoughts and experiences: She thinks of death, and then her feet, which are molded to fit high heels, go flat.

This change to Barbie’s body is played for laughs — the other Barbies are horrified — but it’s crucial to the plot and to Gerwig’s intentions. Once Barbie’s feet touch the ground, she seeks advice from a misfit version of the doll (the invaluable Kate McKinnon), who prescribes Birkenstocks and a trip to the real world. Soon, Barbie — with Ken riding shotgun — journeys into something like reality; that they land in Los Angeles reads like a puckish joke. There, Barbie is astonished to discover sexism, and Ken is delighted to discover patriarchy, contrapuntal revelations that generate further comedy and something like enlightenment.

Gerwig handles the transition between realms smoothly, but even in this bouncy, happy movie, reality proves a bummer. It’s amusing when Barbie points out a billboard filled with women, mistaking them for the Supreme Court because that’s what the court looks like in Barbie Land, just with more pink. She learns how wrong she was, which is to Gerwig’s point. But the weight of our world, emblematized at least for this viewer by the real Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, proves unbearably heavy. However politically sharp, the gag is

an unpleasant reminder of all the profoundly unfunny ways in which this world, with its visible and invisible hands, tries to control women, putting them into little boxes.

Mattel has long tried to reconcile Barbie with the real world. The toy’s origins lie with Ruth Handler, a founder of Mattel who wanted to make a doll for girls like her daughter, Barbara. Handler found her inspiration in Europe with an adult-looking German doll called Bild Lilli that Mattel reconfigured. Some buyers pushed back: “The idea of a doll with breasts was not received well,” Handler said in a 1994 Lilith magazine interview.

Barbie’s breasts and the rest of her continued to generate criticism, including from physicians who treat body dysmorphia. In recent years, Mattel has tried to make the doll more culturally relevant, adding careers and not just new merch to its product portfolio. “When a girl plays with Barbie she imagines everything she can become,” a 2015

Mattel ad promised during a period of sluggish sales. Its Fashionistas line introduced new facial shapes, eye colors and skin tones, followed by petite, curvy and tall versions, a diversity that has paid off. In 2019, Mattel announced that this Barbie movie was going forward with Robbie as the star.

As a performer, Robbie always pops onscreen, and her turn here as a classic blond bombshell who has more going on than that sexist stereotype suggests is charming and subtly phased; you can see the light turn on gradually behind her eyes. Like America Ferrera’s sympathetic Mattel employee, Robbie warms the movie, expanding and deepening its emotions. That’s particularly necessary because Ken’s comic obtuseness and arc — as well as Gosling’s deadpan and boy-band dance moves — recurrently draw attention away from the actress and her character. However narratively motivated, this upstaging of Barbie effectively suggests

that only the Kens of the world need their consciousness raised.

The real world may initially bewilder Barbie, but she figures it out. That’s just what you’d expect given that Mattel partnered with Warner Bros. for this movie and is banking big on it. For her part, Gerwig figures it out by vibing on joy, tapping into nostalgia, showcasing her large cast (Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Dua Lipa, Helen Mirren, Michael Cera, etc.) and, for the most part, dodging the thorny contradictions and the criticisms that cling to the doll. And while Gerwig does slip in a few glints of critique — as when a teenage girl accuses Barbie of promoting consumerism, shortly before she pals up with our heroine — these feel more like mere winks at the adults in the audience than anything else.

Like “Air,” Ben Affleck’s recent movie about how Nike signed Michael Jordan, as well as other entertainments tethered to their consumer subjects, “Barbie” can only push so hard. These movies can’t damage the goods, though I’m not sure most viewers would want that; our brands, ourselves, after all. That said, Gerwig does much within the material’s inherently commercial parameters, though it isn’t until the finale — capped by a sharply funny, philosophically expansive last line — that you see the “Barbie” that could have been. Gerwig’s talents are one of this movie’s pleasures, and I expect that they’ll be wholly on display in her next one — I just hope that this time it will be a house of her own wildest dreams.

Southern Europe is baking, thanks to a relentless heat wave with temperatures breaking records across Italy, Spain and Greece. This extreme weather, coupled with one of the busiest tourist seasons in recent years, raises questions for travelers looking to enjoy their vacations while staying safe. Here’s what you need to know if you’re heading to Europe in the coming days, or are already there.

What areas of Europe are being hit?

Italy, Spain and Greece are the countries most impacted by a high pressure “anticyclone,” which originated in North Africa, that’s causing the record heat. Northeastern Spain saw highs of 115 degrees last week, while parts of central Greece hit 109 degrees. The hot, dry conditions have also exacerbated wildfires in Greece, Croatia, Switzerland and Spain’s Canary Islands, forcing thousands to evacuate.

How long will this heat wave last?

Forecasts show the heat wave lasting through the end of July. However, this particular anticyclone — named Charon, for the ferryman for the dead in Greek mythology — follows closely on the heels of another high pressure system from the Sahara. (That one was called Cerberus, after the three-headed dog that guards the underworld.)

In Europe, heat events have been increasing in intensity and frequency, experts say, in recent years.

Are these areas prepared for this type of heat?

In general, European cities are poorly equipped to cope with extreme, persistent heat. Many have ancient architecture, particularly in areas attractive to tourists, and fewer buildings overall are equipped with air conditioning. According to a 2018 study, just 1 in 10 European households have air conditioning, compared with 90% in the United States. Some European countries have passed laws drastically limiting air conditioner installation.

While some cities, like Paris, have worked to plant more trees and set up public cooling centers, experts say that these efforts have fallen short. A report published in the journal Nature Medicine attributed 61,000 excess deaths across the continent to last year’s heat waves.

Is it safe to travel to Southern Europe?

Safety is largely an individual question, dependent on your age, underlying illnesses and physical conditions. Regardless, extreme heat comes with decided risks. You can and should take steps to mitigate your risk.

Dr. Myhanh Nguyen, the department chair of travel medicine clinics for the Sutter Health Palo Alto Medical Foundation, advised travelers to know their medical history and any preexisting conditions or medications that could lead to heightened heat sensitivity; she noted that infants and older people are particularly sensitive.

Speak to your doctor, or a doctor at a travel health clinic, before your trip, about any precautions. Then while traveling, consider your clothing, accommodations and daily activities.

“It’s important for everyone to reduce the risk of heat-related illness through protective behaviors,” said Claudia Brown, a health scientist with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Climate and Health Program at the National Center for Environmental Health. As for how to reduce that risk, Brown said that finding an air-conditioned environment, when available, is the most effective method.

“Beyond air conditioning, limit your outdoor activity, especially midafternoon, the hottest part of the day, and avoid direct sunlight,” Brown said. “Wear loose, light-fitting clothing, stay hydrated and take cold showers or baths to lower your body temperature.”

Nguyen also said staying hydrated is key.

“It’s important to not just orally hydrate, but to have an external source of water, too, like a water fountain or swimming pool.” Nguyen also suggested paying close attention to any kind of official notices or warning systems, and avoiding dense, crowded attractions and seeking out shaded or wooded areas.

Be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen.

Will travel insurance help?

At present, most travel insurance policies do not have specific clauses covering extreme heat, according to Beth Godlin, the president of the Aon Affinity Travel Practice, a travel insurance provider.

“Cancel for any reason policies will allow you to cancel based on the weather, as do newer policies that allow you to interrupt your trip for any reason,” she said. But aside

from that, don’t count on your travel insurance to cover heat. Policies may cover emergency care for heat-related illness, such as heat stroke or dehydration, but even then, the coverage is for the resulting illness, versus the heat itself.

“Travel insurance policies have evolved, and this may become something that’s covered in the next couple of years,” Godlin said. “It’s not exactly an established phenomenon.”

Can I change my plans?

In general, this summer’s crowded conditions in Europe leave little room for lastminute changes or cancellations that will be reimbursed, explained Joyce Falcone, president of the Italian Concierge, a New Jerseybased travel agency that specializes in trips and tours in Italy.

Falcone mentioned that many of her clients were hoping to stay on the Italian coast instead of traveling to steamy cities. But travelers canceling tours, drivers, hotels and more last minute should not expect refunds.

“Vendors are scheduled very tightly and don’t have much maneuverability,” Falcone said. “They’re trying to make a living and have limited time to do so.”

What do locals do to beat the heat?

“They go to the beach!” Falcone said. “They’re like New Yorkers who abandon the city and head to the Jersey Shore or the Hamptons.”

While not all Europeans are able to flee the city for the beach, many decamp for the country to relatives’ homes to escape the oppressive concrete of urban environments.

If you can’t get to the beach, how can you cool down in the city?

So you’re stuck in the city. Try to limit your wanderings to the early morning hours, before 10 a.m., or after the sun has set. Plan on a Spanish-style siesta during the hottest parts of the day. Underground attractions, like the catacombs in Rome, or the civil war-era tunnels in Barcelona, are cooler alternatives to explore. Look into going to the movies, which tend to be air-conditioned. And while it may be too late this year, consider visiting the mountains in summer months or, better yet, avoiding summer travel altogether.

“Offseason travel is the way to go,” Falcone said. “There are fewer crowds and cooler weather. Take this opportunity to consider November, December, January or February. Italy is wonderful that time of year.”

Megan Rapinoe is not going quietly

Sitting on the bench as her United States team played at the Women’s World Cup last week, Megan Rapinoe was sure that she was in the wrong spot. She was just as sure that her coach, Vlatko Andonovski, should see that, and fix it.

“I’m always shocked when I don’t play,” Rapinoe said with a laugh, joking with reporters Sunday about her uneasy new role: reserve. “Every player who starts thinks they should play,” she added. “And everyone on the bench thinks they should be on the field.” What else was Rapinoe supposed to think, having come to this World Cup as a marquee player who had been a game changer in its last three editions? For the first time in 12 years, Rapinoe, the outspoken and accomplished leader of the U.S. team for the past decade, is watching the World Cup instead of starring in it. In the first U.S. game at this tournament, a 3-0 victory over Vietnam that was her 200th appearance for the United States, Rapinoe came into the game as a substitute for the final half-hour. In the second game, she did not play at all, even as her team struggled to create space and scoring chances in a 1-1 tie with the Netherlands. Rapinoe, 38, expected this World Cup to be a sort of changing of the guard, of course. She is the oldest player on the team, and on the eve of her team’s departure for New Zealand, she announced that this would be her final World Cup and her final professional season. She will never be happy about sitting out, she said. But she also knows she has a role to play.

“Ultimately, we’re at the World Cup — this is where everybody wants to be, whether you’re playing 90 minutes or whether you’re a game changer or whatever,” she said. “I think it’s a lot similar to what I thought it would be, bringing all the experience that I can, all the experience that I have, and ultimately being ready whenever my number is called up.”

She is, she said, embracing her new role. Maybe the United States needs a player — a player like her, was the clear implication — who gives “20 minutes in two games that wins the team the tournament, or wins a team a game that gets it to the next round.”

The United States expects to have a long road yet at this World Cup, and no one — including Rapinoe — wants it to be a weekslong eulogy to her career. But Rapinoe’s teammates are already mourning her depar-

ture, no matter how many minutes she plays here. When Kelley O’Hara, the defender who has played with Rapinoe at the past three World Cups, was asked days before the tournament if she had started to consider what it will be like when Rapinoe is gone, she broke into tears.

“She’s done such incredible things for this team and for the world, so to be able to see the up close and personal Pinoe, and be close to that has been really special,” O’Hara said. “I hope that we all send her out on a high.”

Alex Morgan called Rapinoe a special player, one the team can still count on. “She makes things happen out of nothing,” Morgan said. “We’ve seen that time and time again.”

It is unclear if Rapinoe will have many more chances to make something out of nothing at the World Cup. Andonovski has committed to his new lineup, so much so that he declined to make changes even as it struggled to find a goal against the Netherlands. But Rapinoe made it clear that, from her seat, the United States missed out on controlling its fate.

The team could have set itself up to claim first place in its group if it had beaten the Dutch, most likely locking in an easier path in the knockout rounds. It still controls its destiny — a win, especially a big one, over Portugal on Tuesday would achieve the same result. But Rapinoe knows as well as anyone that World Cups are won or lost by the finest of margins. On the biggest stages, she said, the smallest details can matter, and so she will keep working, keep pushing to play.

Rapinoe and the rest of the U.S. reserves who didn’t play against the Netherlands had time to consider their fate as they gathered at training the day after the match. The starters were back at the hotel, resting, as is usual after a game. For Rapinoe, the substitute, there was training. It was a hard lesson, she acknowledged, but also an opportunity.

“You cry in your shower or you cry with your friends in the sauna,” she said. But after that, you have no choice but to make the best of it.

Rapinoe reminded everyone Sunday that she is not any less of a competitor than she was in her first World Cup, in 2011, the tournament in which, she said, she “announced herself.” In the quarterfinals that year against Brazil, it was Rapinoe who delivered a lastsecond ball from midfield to Abby Wam-

bach, who scored the header that saved the Americans from a humbling early elimination. The U.S. went on to reach the final.

Pressure-filled moments like that remind Rapinoe of where the United States stands in this World Cup. And while she might not be the go-to player anymore, she still has a lot to offer, she said. Watching from the sideline Thursday, she said, she spotted “some really simple fixes” that she was more than happy to share with her teammates and her coaches.

On Sunday, Rapinoe was quick to emphasize that just because she is OK with her role as a sage and helpful veteran, that doesn’t mean she is going any easier on the younger players during practices.

Every day in training, she said, her job is to try to take one of theirs. “And that makes them better,” she said. “That makes me better. That makes the whole team better.”

Terence Crawford knocks out Errol Spence in one-sided bout

Terence Crawford turned the most significant boxing match of the year into a bruising lesson in the sweet science, dropping Errol Spence Jr. three times en route to a ninth-round knockout Saturday night in Las Vegas to become the undisputed champion at 147 pounds.

Crawford, now 40-0 with 31 knockouts, entered the bout as the World Boxing Organization champion. In dismantling Spence, Crawford added titles from the World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council. The win makes Crawford, 35, of Omaha, Nebraska, the first undisputed welterweight champion since 2007, and the first in the welterweight division to hold all four titles simultaneously.

After the final bell, Crawford draped the three new belts over his shoulders and raised one fist in triumph while he sipped from a blue water bottle.

“I’m an overachiever,” Crawford said. “Nobody believed in me when I was coming up, but I kept achieving.”

Over the past half-decade, Spence and Crawford have established themselves as the top performers in a talented division. From a competitive standpoint, matching them up against one another seemed natural. But boxing is also a business, and promotional contracts helped keep Spence and Crawford apart until Saturday.

Spence is signed to the Premier Boxing Champions managerial outfit,

and won his world titles by defeating other PBC aligned fighters — Kell Brook in 2017, Mikey Garcia in 2019, and Yordenis Ugás in 2022. Crawford spent the bulk of his career signed to the promoter Top Rank, winning and defending his belt in Top Rank events.

When Crawford became a promotional free agent in November 2021, a showdown with Spence seemed the logical next step. Spence called for a Crawford fight after defeating Ugás, but an agreement to face Crawford in late 2022 fell apart. Crawford instead faced a challenger named David Avanesyan, dispatching him in six rounds in December 2022.

Then came more negotiations. In the absence of an actual fight,

fans and observers of the sport were forced to imagine how Spence’s and Crawford’s styles might mesh. How would Crawford deal with Spence’s rock-solid fundamentals and steady pre ssure? Could Spence handle Crawford’s switch-hitting and power punching?

Saturday’s bout finally provided some answers.

Spence pressed forward at the start behind a stiff right jab, forcing Crawford to circle the perimeter of the ring, with 22-foot by 22-foot dimensions that figured to favor the shiftier Crawford.

But in round two, a quick exchange of punches ended with a short right jab from Crawford that put an off-balance Spence on the canvas. The knockdown marked the first time either fighter had been dropped in his professional career but in the moment it seemed brief and inconsequential. Spence opened the next round on offense, as if to prove the punch had not damaged him.

As the fight wore on, however, Crawford’s superior timing and onepunch power had become apparent.

In round seven, Spence gathered himself to throw a looping left. As the punch traveled toward Crawford’s head, Crawford fired a short, sharp right hook that dropped Spence a second time. Just before the bell, a double right hook knocked Spence off his feet

again.

A flurry of hard punches in round nine prompted the referee, Harvey Dock, to stop the fight.

For Crawford, the result was a less on on the value of turning defense into offense.

“Our main focus was the jab,” he said. “Take away his best attribute and the rest is history.”

From here, another Spence-Crawford fight is possible, even after the one-sided result. A clause in the contract allows the loser to call for an immediate rematch. One or both fighters might also move up to the 154-pound junior middleweight class. Spence had hinted that the Crawford bout would be his last in the 147-pound welterweight division.

“We gotta do it again,” Spence, now 28-1, said in the ring after the fight. “I’ll be a lot better.”

If Crawford changes weight classes, the welterweight belts would likely become vacant, setting off a scramble for championships among contenders like Ugás, Cody Crowley, and Jaron Ennis, the standout contender from Philadelphia.

Saturday’s bout attracted attention from a broad spectrum of sports fans. T-Mobile Arena, which seats 20,000 people for boxing events, filled by the time Spence entered the ring.

And the list of celebrities in attendance included boxing legends Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr., billionaire sports owners Jerry Jones and Mark Davis, as well as Cardi B and Offset, the hip-hop power couple. Rapper Eminem walked Crawford to the ring.

And the event drew especially deep interest in each fighter’s hometown, prompting the mayor of Dallas, Eric Johnson, and Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert to make a friendly side bet. If Crawford won, Johnson promised to send Stothert a Texas-style belt buckle, and if Spence won, Stothert pledged to send Johnson a package of Omaha steaks.

Among serious gamblers, the betting odds thinly favored Crawford, showing that the matchup between previously undefeated boxers was, functionally, a tossup.

Until they got into the ring.
