The Puerto Rico Violent Deaths Reporting System (PRVDRS) of the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics (Institute), presented Monday the data from the Violent Deaths Report in Puerto Rico for the year 2021.
The report recorded more than 816 incidents of violent deaths, with a total of 880 fatalities. Of the total number of violent deaths, 97% were 639 due to homicide and 215 due to suicide, with the remaining 26 violent deaths 3% due to other causes.
In 2021, 72.6% of violent death victims were single or multiple homicide incidents and 24.4% were suicide incidents. Two homicide-suicide incidents were reported, resulting in four fatalities. In addition, during this period, two violent deaths were documented that were attributed to legal intervention (0.2%), three violent deaths due to unintentional self-inflicted firearms (0.3%), and 21 violent deaths with undetermined intent (2.4%). In 2021, approximately nine out of 10 victims of violent deaths (92.0%) were men. The raw rate of violent deaths for Puerto Rico in 2021 was 27.0 per 100,000 inhabitants, 52.5 in men and 4.0 in women.
Of the 880 violent deaths recorded in 2021, 639 were homicides (72.6%). Most of the homicides occurred between the ages of 15 and 39. These age groups account for 73.1% of all homicides in males and 59.5% in females. The main mechanism of the homicides was firearms. In Puerto Rico, according to the report, 91.5% of homicides were committed with firearms, which is more than double the global average of 47.0%.
In 2021, the majority of homicides occurred in an environment of collective violence. In 358 of the 639 homicides (56.0%) recorded in 2021, they occurred in a context related to criminal groups involved in the transfer of illicit drugs.
In 2021, 31 fatal victims of family violence were reported. Family violence (violence between family members) includes child or adult abuse and intimate partner violence. Most of these cases were related to violence in an environment of intimate partners or ex-partners (20 cases, 64.5%). Eleven fatal incidents between family members (35.5%) was recorded. The majority of victims of intimate partner violence were women (18 cases, 90.0%). More than half of these women were victims of their spouse or current partner (61.1%), while 38.9% were victims of their ex-spouse or ex-partner. In addition, 11 of the 18 femicides/femicides involved the use of a firearm (61.1%).
at the Institute and co-principal investigator of the Report on Violent Deaths in Puerto Rico, explained that the collection of this type of data could involve fieldwork that takes more than two years, from the time the incident occurs until the data collection and review is completed.
“This violent death reporting system is a reliable, complete, and unique reference source that helps describe the context of violent deaths in the victim-aggressor relationship and the magnitude, trend, and characteristics of violent deaths in Puerto Rico,” said Dr. Diego Zavala, epidemiologist and co-principal investigator of the PRVDRS.
For the Institute’s Executive Director, Dr. Orville M. Disdier, these statistics are one of the main tools to combat the phenomenon of violence in Puerto Rico. “These data, among others, serve as a basis for establishing effective violence prevention measures in Puerto Rico, from multiple social, health, and economic approaches. Our commitment at the Institute is to continue strengthening this statistical and epidemiological system, to continue improving the quality of this type of data,” Dr. Disdier argued.
The PRVDRS is an epidemiological surveillance system affiliated with the Institute of Statistics and designed to obtain a complete and standardized census of violent deaths in Puerto Rico. PRVDRS began participating in the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) in September 2016 through a collaborative agreement with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics is an autonomous governmental entity with the task of coordinating the Government’s statistics production service to ensure that the data collection and statistics systems on which public policies are based are complete, reliable, and quickly and universally accessible.

As for suicides in Puerto Rico, the report highlights that the frequency is lower than that of homicides. However, as in homicides, suicides are more frequent in men (86.5%). In 2021, the raw suicide rate was 6.6 per 100,000 population, 12.0 in men (1 in 124 men), and 1.7 in women (1 in 774 women). The main mechanism was asphyxia (64.5% in men and 55.2% in women).

Puerto Rico Gov. Pedro R. Pierluisi announced Monday that construction work has begun in the Port of Mayagüez and the Port of San Pedro de Macorís in the Dominican Republic that will enable the Baleària ferry company to start a maritime route between both towns in the summer.
“Today we celebrate the beginning of construction work at the facilities of the Port of Mayagüez in Puerto Rico and the Port of San Pedro de Macorís. These works consist of constructing a new multifunctional passenger terminal in the port of San Pedro de Macorís and adapting more than 100 thousand square meters of these facilities in the Port of Mayagüez. The facilities will have the latest in technology and the route is scheduled to begin after the summer. This Baleària project will promote the mobility of passengers and merchandise between the Antilles, provide access to European markets, and boost tourism and trade between our jurisdictions,” the governor said.
“The development and construction of this new maritime connection has an investment of $100 million, both from government funds and private funds in both jurisdictions,” Pierluisi highlighted.

Authority, Joel Pizá; the executive director of Baleària Eurolíneas Marítimas, Adolfo Utor; the executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (CTPR), Carlos Mercado Santiago; the president of the Port of Mayagüez Development, Francisco Noya; the president of America Duty Free, Simón Falic; and other officials.
During his speech, the governor highlighted that relations between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic have deep roots that go back throughout history, which is why “this new project is of utmost importance, because it unites us and strengthens the cooperative efforts that “benefit us mutually.”
He said tourism is a pillar of the economy. “We will always bet on this sector that highlights and exhibits everything that Puerto Rico offers our visitors. My administration has focused on cultivating the tourism potential of our island, demonstrating to the world that in Puerto Rico, we are an example of resilience, recovery, and economic growth, as well as a destination rich in history, culture, and natural and entertainment attractions. The executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (CTPR), Carlos Mercado Santiago, stated that the collaboration with Baleària “will be a successful and convenient one, both for the organizations involved and for travelers from the leisure sectors. and business.”
The Center for Investigative Journalism (CPI by its Spanish initials) Monday filed a judicial appeal against the Puerto Rico Land Authority (PRTA) for failing to respond to a request for access to public information on the composition and minutes of its Governing Board.
Since January 23, 2024, the journalist and founder of Bonita Radio, Carmen Enid Acevedo, who was awarded a scholarship by the Journalism Training Institute of the CPI, requested by email of Irving Rodríguez, executive director of the ATPR, the minutes of the meetings of the Governing Board, the composition of the Board, and who have been its secretaries from 2018 to the present.
After several days without receiving a response, the journalist went to the headquarters of the Land Authority to follow up. She was told that it was necessary to submit her request for information, again, in writing. After making the requested arrangements and informing at least three agency officials about the request, in person and in writing, including ATPR Executive Director Irving Rodríguez, the journalist waited several days without receiving a response and then called the agency several times until they told her again that they were working on her request. But to this day, more than 10 weeks after the original request,
the requested information has not been received.
The CPI asks the court to order the Land Authority to provide the minutes of the agency’s Board of Governors meetings, in digital PDF format. In addition, the names of all the people who have been part of the Board from 2017 to the present, including the dates on which they have held such positions and who their secretaries have been, indicates the appeal filed by lawyers Luis José Torres Asencio, Steven P. Lausell Recurt and Judith Berkan of the Legal Assistance Clinic of the Inter-American University School of Law on behalf of the CPI.
“All the information requested is public information and of high public interest to the People of Puerto Rico. What is requested is not protected in any way by any privilege or claim of confidentiality and is not covered by some of the exceptions to the right of access to information,” said Carla Minet, executive director of the CPI.
In previous cases, the same Court of First Instance has ordered the disclosure of minutes of meetings of Boards of Directors of government entities. In the case of CPI vs Rivera Ríos, the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Directors of the State Insurance Fund Corporation between 2009 and 2012 were ordered to be handed over. “The actions and omissions of the Land Authority in not providing the requested public information lacerate our constitutional rights of access to information and freedom of the press, for which the Court must order the agency to fulfill its duty,” said the executive director of the CPI.
Former San Juan Mayor and law professor Héctor Luis Acevedo urged Governor Pedro Pierluissi and State Election Commission (SEC) interim President Jessika Padilla to comply with the registration process for new voters in public and private schools on the island.
He said the SEC has a serious delay in the registration of new voters for the upcoming primary.
“There are less than 20 days left before the closing of the voter registration for the primary, on April 31, 2024, and the State Election Commission (CEE) has more than 100 schools left to visit to register students. This, together with the closure of the Permanent Registration Boards in most towns, has produced a crisis in the electoral participation of young people,” he said.
The Electoral Law of 2020 left to the SEC’s jurisdiction the task of registering new voters. “Now it turns out that days before registration for the primaries closes, there are thousands
of voters left unregistered by the design of the authors of that disastrous Law,” he said.
“The Commission stopped making this aggressive registration effort since 2021, so the young people who graduated in 2021, 2022 and 2023 in hundreds of schools did not have the opportunity to enroll in their educational centers,” he said.
Governor Pierluissi has refused to meet to discuss amendments to the Electoral Law and vetoed the proposal of all the opposition parties that represent 67% of the electorate and that restored that registration mandate in schools.
As an example of the situation, he provided a copy of the latest report from March of this year which reveals that at the moment 120 schools around the country are unregistered. “This is alarming a few days before the celebration of primaries that will define the candidates running in the November general elections. It is of the greatest urgency that this situation be resolved so that there is the will and the necessary resources for this purpose. No Doing so is violating the right of young people to register and vote,” he stressed.
Former Santa Isabel Mayor Enrique Questell Alvarado will have to pay a fine of $42,000 to the Government Ethics Office for contracting some 14 relatives or their companies for work for the city.
Office of Government Ethics (OEG) Executive Director Luis Pérez Vargas announced the punishment Monday.
“We determined that the defendant, Enrique H. Questell Alvarado, incurred 14 violations of subsection (d) of article 43 of the Charter Law of the Puerto Rico Office of Government Ethics (LOOEG), Law No. 1-2012. Following the recommendation of the Examining Officer, the defendant is imposed an administrative fine of $3,000 for each of the 14 violations...The total fine imposed is $42,000,” reads the Resolution.
Within a period of 30 days, from the date on which the
Resolution is notified, the former mayor will have to make the payment.
The mayor of San Juan, Miguel A. Romero Lugo, reported that starting next Wednesday, March 27, the municipal administration will implement a comprehensive security plan, reinforcing preventive surveillance in coastal areas, main roads, communities and religious activities, such as processions, that are celebrated in the capital city on the occasion of Holy Week.
The plan will remain in force until Sunday, March 31 and consists, among other things, of strategically activating several units, including the Maritime Unit of the Municipal Police, who will maintain personnel from the area of the El Escambrón resort to Ocean Park beach, by land and sea.
Romero Lugo recalled that annually the municipality receives the visit of thousands of people who keep the tradition of visiting the churches of San Juan, while others go to the parks and beaches.
“In coordination with the security and emergency response team, we have outlined a comprehensive security plan to ensure the well-being and enjoyment of San Juan residents and visitors. We urge the public to observe and enjoy Holy Week in moderation and in control, to avoid tragedies in bodies of water, roads and communities,” the mayor urged.
For his part, the Commissioner of the Municipal Police, Juan Jackson, said that in coordination with the staff of the Municipal Office for Emergency Management “they will be vigilant to any situation that may occur in the coastal area of the city in order to respond quickly and effectively.”
Meanwhile, agents from the Traffic Division will participate in a campaign in conjunction with personnel from the Traffic Safety Commission in order to prevent and be vigilant against drivers who exceed blood alcohol limits and drink alcoholic beverages to drive motor vehicles, conduct that can cause fatal accidents on the roads.
The accused party must deposit the payment of the fine at the Secretariat of the Office of Government Ethics of Puerto Rico (OEG), by certified check or postal or bank order payable to the Secretary of the Treasury.
According to the GEO, on July 16, 2021, the Puerto Rico Office of Government Ethics filed a complaint against Enrique H. Questell Alvarado, alleging that he awarded 14 contracts to relatives as well as to companies belonging to relatives, without clearing it first with the GEO.
As a result of these allegations, the complainant accused Questell Alvarado of having violated, on 14 occasions the ethics code.
On September 10, 2021, the defendant presented his response to the complaint. In brief, he accepted allegations two, three and four of the complaint but denied the other eleven or indicated that they did not require a responsive allegation.
Commissioner Jackson explained that, as part of the established security plan, the commanders of the three police zones reinforced preventive patrols in the interior of the communities of San Juan. They will also be providing assistance to churches and organizations in managing traffic so that they can carry out their processions safely.
In tourist areas, including Placita de Santurce, surveillance and traffic control services will be maintained, including the use of security cameras. The commissioner recalled that due to the increase in tourists visiting the island during the spring break at universities, a greater number of visitors are expected in those areas.
“We emphasize that, if anyone has drunk alcoholic beverages, they should give up the keys (to the car). We want families to enjoy themselves safely. We call for caution when visiting the beaches and be attentive to the bulletins issued by the National Weather Service in San Juan. We extend to citizens and families an invitation to visit the spas and areas designated for bathers, avoiding jumping into the sea in risk areas,” said the commissioner of the Municipal Police.

In a carefully worded interview broadcast on ABC News on Sunday, Vice President Kamala Harris declined to provide details on how the Biden administration would respond if Israel invaded the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, if Congress continued to refuse to pass border-security legislation and if TikTok’s Chinese parent company refused to sell the service.
Harris reiterated the administration’s previously stated position that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel should not order an invasion of Rafah, where more than 1 million people have sought refuge from Israel’s aerial bombardment and ground operations throughout the rest of Gaza.
“We have been clear in multiple conversations and in every way that any major military operation in Rafah would be a huge mistake,” she said. “Let me tell you something. I have studied the maps. There’s nowhere for those folks to go, and we’re looking at about 1.5 million people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there, most of them.”
But she did not answer when the interviewer, Rachel Scott, asked whether there would be “consequences” if Israel invaded Rafah anyway. Scott noted that Netanyahu had shown no inclination to follow the advice of the United States.
“Well, we’re going to take it one step at a time, but we’ve been very clear in terms of our perspective on whether or not that should happen,” Harris said, adding, after Scott repeated the question, “I am ruling out nothing.”

“We have no intention to ban TikTok,” she said. “In fact, what it serves in terms of, it’s an income generator for many people, what it does in terms of allowing people to share information in a free way and a way that allows people to have discourse, is very important.”
But she did not say that Biden would veto the bill if it passed the Senate.
Turning to immigration, Scott showed a video of migrants clashing with Texas National Guard troops along the border in El Paso and asked whether that conveyed to Americans “that the border is secure.”
“We are very clear, and I think most Americans are clear, that we have a broken immigration system and we need to fix it,” Harris said, criticizing Senate Republicans for, in the face of pressure from former President Donald Trump, backing away from a bipartisan border-security deal that some of their members had negotiated.
“They’re refusing to put it up for a vote, and in large part because we know the former president would prefer to run on a problem instead of fix a problem,” she said.
Asked about the possibility of executive action, which Republicans in Congress are demanding, she indicated that it was an option on the table but said, “That does not absolve the fact that the real fix is going to be when Congress acts.”
On the 14th anniversary of the signing of the Affordable Care Act on Saturday, President Joe Biden sought to put health care at the center of his reelection campaign, releasing a video featuring former President Barack Obama and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The three highlighted key provisions of the Affordable Care Act, which provides subsidies for millions of Americans to buy health insurance, allows people to stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26 and stops insurers from denying or charging more for coverage based on preexisting conditions.
And they emphasized that former President Donald Trump, if reelected, could get rid of it. He tried to do so in his first term, and in November he said Republicans should “never give up” on repealing it.
“Republicans have voted, it’s hard to believe, 50 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act,” Biden said at Saturday’s event. “Fifty times. And now Donald Trump and his MAGA extremists are determined to try again.”
He added: “Folks, we simply can’t let that happen. We
won’t let that happen. We’re determined, we’re determined as ever to defend and strengthen the Affordable Care Act, and to make health care a right, not a privilege.”
The event also featured Ashleigh Ewald, an activist from Georgia who emphasized the significance of the ability to stay on a parent’s plan until age 26, and Tyra Bryant-Stephens, a pediatrician from Pennsylvania who treats children with asthma and spoke to the significance of protections for preexisting conditions.
Biden signed legislation expanding the Affordable Care Act’s subsidies through 2025 so that people with household incomes over 400% of the federal poverty level would be eligible if the premium for a standard plan would otherwise exceed 8.5% of their income. Under his administration, enrollment in plans sold through the public exchanges created under the law has reached a record of more than 21 million people.
Obama suggested that a reelected Biden could expand the law further.
“Now we have a chance to do even more,” he
said, “but that only happens if we send Joe and Kamala back to the White House in November.”
Pelosi declared that “the fate of the ACA is on the ballot this year,” and Biden sought to broaden that statement by connecting the Affordable Care Act to other health-related policies — including Social Security, Medicare and abortion rights.
“Health care’s at stake in this election,” he said.
Housing advocates in New York have created a super political action committee that aims to spend tens of thousands of dollars to help elect political candidates who welcome development in their districts.
The group will also seek to defeat candidates it believes are not doing enough to support housing construction.
The super PAC, Abundant New York, is the electoral arm of Open New York, a nonprofit group formed in 2016 that advocates more development. The PAC is a more aggressive attempt by the group to make politicians feel consequences for not doing enough to address a worsening housing crisis.
The formation of Abundant New York comes as a housing shortage continues to fuel an affordability crisis both in New York City and across the state. Both Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams are attempting to pass legislation that would make it easier to develop, after lawmakers in Albany failed to push through major housing legislation last session.

The problem remains dire: A recent New York City housing survey found that in 2023, only 1.4% of homes were available to rent, the lowest such number in more than 50 years. The vacancy rate was even lower for cheaper apartments.
The creation of Abundant New York is also another sign that housing politics in the state are shifting. Blocking development used to be an easy political win in some neighborhoods, where residents, worried about the changes that come with more density, are often able to organize quickly to lobby local politicians to preserve the status quo.
But two New York City politicians recently created a new “league” of pro-housing officials to support the construction of more apartments.
And Annemarie Gray, the executive director of Open
New York, said that to earn Abundant New York’s support, politicians must be in favor of both market-rate and affordable housing development.
They would also have to support better tenant protections, such as a contentious “good cause eviction” bill that would restrict landlords’ ability to remove tenants.
She said she expected the PAC to raise and spend “six figures” on city and state elections this year, although she declined to provide specific numbers. She said the plan was to raise and spend several million dollars over the next several years.
The super PAC, formally known as an independent expenditure committee, was not allowed to raise money until its official creation, which took place Monday. Gray said the group would not take any money from the real estate industry
but would target a “diverse donor network” of individuals. Open New York raised more than $600,000 in contributions and grants in 2022, according to the group’s financial records.
Super PACs tend to focus on the state’s most competitive races. An analysis of 2022 election spending from the Brennan Center for Justice found that 70% of state Assembly and Senate races did not have any independent expenditures and only 24 races had independent expenditures totaling more than $100,000.
“If you’re serious about solving New York’s housing affordability crisis, we will support you,” said Gray, a former adviser in City Hall. “And if you’re standing in the way, we’ll hold you accountable.”
The group will support incumbents who have both primary and general election challengers. It may also oppose incumbents in primaries if the group decides they are not doing enough to make way for more housing.
Among the candidates who may get support from Abundant New York this year are state Sen. Rachel May, D-Syracuse, who will face at least one challenger from the right; Micah Lasher, a former adviser to Hochul who is vying with several other Democrats to represent the Upper West Side in the Assembly; and Sarahana Srestha, a democratic socialist who represents parts of the Hudson Valley in the Assembly and faces a primary challenge.
Srestha said she would appreciate the support from Open New York and said she was in favor of building more housing aimed at all income levels, something left-wing Democrats like her have not always supported.
“What’s good about Open New York is they are interested in the whole package of tenant protections and ‘what kind of housing are we talking about,’” she said. “It’s not a simplified conversation about just ‘more housing everywhere.’”

U.S. stocks followed their overseas counterparts lower at the top of a holiday-shortened week on Monday as investors positioned themselves ahead of crucial inflation data.
The three major U.S. stock indexes started the day modestly lower, with megacap momentum stocks pulling the tech-laden Nasdaq down most, while the dollar dipped with the threat of potential yen intervention looming and China’s government- supported yuan rally weighing on the greenback.
Wall Street focused on Boeing Co after the planemaker announced its CEO Dave Calhoun will step down by year-end amid a flurry of safety concerns.
“There’s a bit of digesting (last week’s Fed decision) and waiting for economic data and first-quarter earnings which are just a couple of weeks away,” said Oliver Pursche, senior vice president at Wealthspire Advisors, in New York.
“Keep in mind, it’s been a great year so far,” Pursche added. “The more legitimate component is there’s a small concern about resilience of the economy and whether or not we will in fact end up with a recession later this year because the Fed is waiting too long to lower rates.”
After the U.S. Federal Reserve’s decision last Wednesday to leave its key policy rate unchanged, and its “dot plot” still reflecting expectations for three cuts to that rate this year, markets are looking ahead to Friday’s Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) report due from the Commerce Department.
Analysts expect the PCE data to show inflation gathered heat in February, with prices rising by 0.4% after January’s 0.3% gain. However, so-called “core” price inflation, which strips away volatile food and energy prices, is seen cooling to 0.3% from 0.4%.
Year-on-year, headline and core PCE price indexes are expected land at 2.5% and 2.8%, respectively, still hovering within one percentage point of the Fed’s average annual 2% target.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 123.25 points, or 0.31%, to 39,352.65, the S&P 500 lost 8.37 points, or 0.16%, to 5,225.81 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 18.92 points, or 0.12%, to 16,409.90.
European stocks traded narrowly around unchanged after Friday’s record highs as market participants digested dovish sentiment from major central banks.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 0.13% and MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe shed 0.11%.
Emerging market stocks lost 0.22%. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan closed 0.06% lower, while Japan’s Nikkei lost 1.16%.
The dollar dipped against the yen as Japan’s top currency diplomat warned against speculators trying to weaken the currency, while China’s yuan gained on suspected selling of dollars by state-owned banks.
“China and Japan trying to shore up their currencies is a reflection of weakness in their economies, and they’re putting a band-aid on something that requires something more significant,” Pursche said.
The dollar index rose 0.14%, with the euro up 0.29%
to $1.0836.
The Japanese yen strengthened 0.12% versus the greenback at 151.32 per dollar, while Sterling was last trading at $1.2649, up 0.38% on the day.
Bitcoin was last up 9.0% at $69,194 as the cryptocurrency broke above its 10-day moving average.
Treasury yields edged higher as the market awaits the auction of $176 billion of U.S. government debt this week.
Benchmark 10-year notes last fell 7/32 in price to yield 4.2454%, from 4.218% late on Friday.

The U.N. Security Council on Monday passed a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip for the month of Ramadan, breaking a fivemonth impasse during which the U.S. vetoed several calls for ending the war, even as the humanitarian toll climbed higher. The resolution passed with 14 votes in favor. The U.S. abstained, allowing the resolution to pass. The chamber broke into
applause after the vote.
The breakthrough resolution, which is legally binding and was put forth by the 10 nonpermanent members of the council, was negotiated intensely until the last minute. The U.S. asked for a change in the text that removed “permanent cease-fire” and replaced it with “lasting cease-fire,” according to diplomats, language that would leave room for Israel to defend itself and called for both sides to create conditions where the halt in fighting could be sustained.
The British government is expected to publicly link China to cyberattacks that compromised the voting records of tens of millions of people, another notable hardening of Britain’s stance toward China since its leaders heralded a “golden era” in British-Chinese relations nearly a decade ago.
The deputy prime minister, Oliver Dowden, will make a statement about the matter in Parliament on Monday afternoon, and is expected to announce sanctions against state-affiliated individuals and entities implicated in the attacks.
The government disclosed the attack on the Electoral Commission last year but
did not identify those behind it. It is believed to have begun in 2021 and lasted several months, with the personal details of 40 million voters being hacked.
The Electoral Commission, which oversees elections in the United Kingdom, said that the names and addresses of anyone registered to vote in Britain and Northern Ireland between 2014 and 2022 had been accessed, as well as those of overseas voters.
The commission previously said that the data contained in the electoral registers was limited and noted that much of it was already in the public domain. However, it added that it was possible the data “could be combined with other data in the public domain, such as that which individuals choose to share them-
selves, to infer patterns of behavior or to identify and profile individuals.”
In addition to the infiltration of the Electoral Commission, Dowden is expected to confirm that the Chinese targeted several members of Parliament with a record of hawkish statements about China. They include Iain Duncan-Smith, a former leader of the Conservative Party; Tim Loughton, a former Conservative education minister; and Stewart McDonald, a member of the Scottish National Party.
In remarks to reporters before the announcement, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said, “We’ve been very clear that the situation now is that China is behaving in an increasingly assertive way abroad, authoritarian at home and it represents an epoch-defining challenge, and also the greatest state-based threat to our economic security.”
“So, it’s right that we take measures to protect ourselves, which is what we are doing,” Sunak added.
Tensions between Britain and China have risen in recent years over concerns about human rights and Chinese threats to British security. Under pressure from the United States, Britain in 2020 announced plans to curtail the role of Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications giant, in its 5G network.
Then Britain condemned a new national security law in Hong Kong, a former British colony, saying it violated the terms of London’s handover agreement with Beijing. The government offered visas to roughly 350,000 Hong Kong
residents who held British overseas passports, and about 160,000 had moved by 2023.
In September, police arrested a 28-yearold British researcher in Parliament on suspicion of working for the Chinese government. The man, who denied being a spy, worked with prominent lawmakers, including Tom Tugendhat, who is now security minister in the government, on China policy, raising fears of possible security breaches.
The arrest of the researcher, which was believed to be unrelated to the cyberattacks, widened a rift within the governing Conservative Party over how London should engage with an increasingly assertive Beijing.
The current foreign secretary, David Cameron, was prime minister during the period when Britain cultivated closer commercial ties with China. In a news conference with Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2015, he hailed the dawn of a “golden era in relations between Britain and China.”
Cameron, who has since stiffened his language about China, is expected to brief Conservative members of Parliament about the allegations later Monday.
On Monday, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Jian, dismissed the reports of Chinese hacking as “fake news.”
“When investigating and determining the character of cyber-incidents, there must be adequate objective evidence,” Lin said, “not smearing other countries without a factual basis, not to mention politicizing cybersecurity issues.”
Shaymaa Shady, 5, had her first amputation in January, after an explosion by her family’s house in Gaza, where she and her relatives had been resting.Five years ago this month, a U.S.-backed Kurdish and Arab militia ousted Islamic State group fighters from a village in eastern Syria, the group’s last sliver of territory.
Since then, the organization that once staked out a selfproclaimed caliphate across Iraq and Syria has metastasized into a more traditional terrorist group — a clandestine network of cells from West Africa to Southeast Asia engaged in guerrilla attacks, bombings and targeted assassinations.
None of the group’s affiliates have been as relentless as the Islamic State in Khorasan, which is active in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran and has set its sights on attacking Europe and beyond. U.S. officials say the group carried out the attack near Moscow on Friday, killing scores of people and wounding many others.
In January, Islamic State-Khorasan, or ISIS-K, carried out twin bombings in Iran that killed scores and wounded hundreds of others at a memorial service for Iran’s former top general, Qassem Soleimani, who was targeted in a U.S. drone strike four years earlier.
“The threat from ISIS,” Avril Haines, director of national intelligence, told a Senate panel this month, “remains a significant counterterrorism concern.” Most attacks “globally taken on by ISIS have actually occurred by parts of ISIS that are outside of Afghanistan,” she said.
Gen. Michael Kurilla, head of the military’s Central Command, told a House committee on Thursday that ISIS-K “retains the capability and the will to attack U.S. and Western interests abroad in as little as six months with little to no warning.”
U.S. counterterrorism specialists Sunday dismissed Russia’s suggestion that Ukraine was behind Friday’s attack near Moscow. “The modus operandi was classic ISIS,” said Bruce Hoffman, a terrorism scholar at the Council on Foreign Relations.
The assault was the third concert venue in the Northern Hemisphere that the Islamic State group has struck in the past decade, Hoffman said, after an attack on the Bataclan theater in Paris in November 2015 (as part of a broader operation that struck other targets in the city) and a suicide bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester Arena, England, in May 2017.
The Islamic State-Khorasan, founded in 2015 by disaffected members of the Pakistani Taliban, burst onto the international jihadi scene after the Taliban toppled the Afghan government in 2021. During the U.S. military withdrawal from the country, ISIS-K carried out a suicide bombing at the international airport in Kabul in August 2021 that killed 13 U.S. service members and as many as 170 civilians.
Since then, the Taliban have been fighting ISIS-K in Afghanistan. So far, the Taliban’s security services have prevented the group from seizing territory or recruiting large numbers of former Taliban fighters, according to U.S. counterterrorism officials.
But the upward arc and scope of ISIS-K’s attacks have increased in recent years, with cross-border strikes into Pakistan and a growing number of plots in Europe. Most of

those European plots were thwarted, prompting Western intelligence assessments that the group might have reached the lethal limits of its capabilities.
In July, Germany and the Netherlands coordinated arrests targeting seven Tajik, Turkmen and Kyrgyz individuals linked to a ISIS-K network who were suspected of plotting attacks in Germany.
Three men were arrested in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia over alleged plans to attack the Cologne Cathedral on New Year’s Eve 2023. The raids were linked to three other arrests in Austria and one in Germany on Dec. 24. The four people were reportedly acting in support of ISIS-K.
U.S. and other Western counterterrorism officials say these plots were organized by low-level operatives who were detected and thwarted relatively quickly.
“Thus far, ISIS-Khorasan has relied primarily on inexperienced operatives in Europe to try to advance attacks in its name,” Christine Abizaid, head of the National Counterterrorism Center, told a House committee in November.
But there are worrisome signs that ISIS-K is learning from its mistakes. In January, masked assailants attacked a Roman Catholic church in Istanbul, killing one person. Shortly afterward, the Islamic State group, through its official Amaq News Agency, claimed responsibility. Turkish law enforcement forces detained 47 people, most of them Central Asian nationals.
Since then, Turkish security forces have launched mass counteroperations against Islamic State group suspects in Turkey, Syria and Iraq. Several European investigations shed light on the global and interconnected nature of Islamic State group finances, according to a United Nations report in January, which identified Turkey as a logistical hub for ISIS-K operations in Europe.
The Moscow and Iran attacks demonstrated more sophistication, counterterrorism officials said, suggesting a greater level of planning and an ability to tap into local extremist networks.
“ISIS-K has been fixated on Russia for the past two years,” frequently criticizing President Vladimir Putin in its propaganda, said Colin Clarke, a counterterrorism analyst at the Soufan Group, a security consulting firm based in New York. “ISIS-K accuses the Kremlin of having Muslim blood in its hands, referencing Moscow’s interventions in Afghanistan, Chechnya and Syria.”
Russian authorities Saturday announced the arrest of several suspects in Friday’s attack. But senior U.S. officials said Sunday that they were still digging into the background of the assailants and trying to determine whether they were deployed from South or Central Asia for this specific attack or if they were already in the country as part of the network of supporters that ISIS-K then engaged and encouraged.
One major event this summer has many counterterrorism officials on edge.
“I worry about the Paris Olympics,” said Edmund FittonBrown, a former top U.N. counterterrorism official who is now a senior adviser to the Counter Extremism Project. “They would be a premium terrorist target.”

One of the most enduring bits of folk wisdom about American politics is the notion that a promise made on the campaign trail is almost never a promise kept. The only thing you can count on from a politician, and especially a presidential candidate, is that you can’t count on anything.
This isn’t actually true. There is, in fact, a strong connection between what a candidate says on the campaign trail and what a president does in office.
In his 1992 campaign, Bill Clinton stressed jobs, unemployment, taxes and health care — encapsulated in his campaign’s refrain, “It’s the economy, stupid.” He followed
through, in the first two years of his administration, with a proposed economic stimulus bill, a proposed health care reform bill and an upper-income tax increase.
George W. Bush, in his 2000 campaign, emphasized education reform and tax cuts and followed through in the first months of his administration with No Child Left Behind and a large upper-income tax cut.
Barack Obama, in his 2008 campaign, stressed health care, jobs and tax cuts for the middle class. He followed through with an economic stimulus bill — which included, among many other things, a middle-class tax cut — and a large, ambitious health care bill that eventually became the Affordable Care Act.
Even Donald Trump, not principally known for telling the truth, acted on the promises of his 2016 campaign. He promised, for example, to build a wall on the border with Mexico, and he tried to build a wall on the border with Mexico. He promised to ban Muslim immigrants from entering the United States, and he tried to ban Muslim immigrants from the United States. Trump’s overt racism in office, his confrontational posture toward North Korea and Iran, and even his attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election were all also presaged by his rhetoric on the campaign trail.
What a candidate and a campaign say matters. How a candidate and a campaign say it also matters.
With these truths in hand, let’s look at the rhetoric of Trump’s current campaign for the White House. At rallies and in interviews, the former president rails against his political opponents as enemies of the nation.
“The threat from outside forces,” Trump said at a rally last year in New Hampshire, “is far less sinister, dangerous and grave than the threat from within.” He said that one critic, Mark Milley, the former chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, deserved to be executed for his actions during Trump’s final month in office. To Trump, any attempt to contain his authority was tantamount to treason.
Other critics, Trump has said, are “vermin” and “thugs.” He’s called for the “termination” of parts of the Constitution and has said that if elected again, he would have “no choice” but to lock up his political opponents. He says that migrants from Central and South America “are poisoning the blood of our country.”
When told, outright, that he’s using the language of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini — the language of fascism — Trump embraces it.
“That’s what they say. I didn’t know that, but that’s what they say. Because our country is being poisoned,” Trump said in a recent interview with Howard Kurtz of Fox News. “Look, we can be nice about it — we can talk about, ‘Oh, I want to be politically correct’ — but we have people coming in from prisons and jails, long-term murderers … They’re all being released into our country. These are murderers; these are people at the highest level of crime. And then you have mental institutions and insane asylums … and then you have terrorists pouring in at a level we have never seen before.”
There’s no way in which any of this represents a statement of policy or future plans. There are no proposals to glean from the former president’s attacks, his invective or his endless denunciations. You could say, if you were inclined to do so, that it was just rhetoric — full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
That would be a huge mistake. We may not be able to give an exact accounting of the consequences of Trump’s violent and fascistic rhetoric if he were granted a second term in office, but rest assured, there would be consequences. Given the power of the federal government and the total backing of the Republican Party, invested with the legitimacy granted by the Constitution, freed from the shackles of legal scrutiny and consumed with a thirst for vengeance — “I am your retribution,” he tells his supporters — there is no question that Trump would act on the desires he has expressed on the campaign trail.
As promised, he would free the Jan. 6 rioters who were prosecuted and imprisoned. As promised, he would unleash federal law enforcement on his political opponents. As promised, he would do something about the people he says are “poisoning the blood of our country.” He would try to be, as he has said to much applause from his supporters, a dictator “only on Day 1.”
Of course, if there’s one promise I do expect Trump to break if he gets back into the Oval Office, it’s that one. If Trump does want to be a dictator, I highly doubt it will be for just one day.

Agregó que el calentamiento de los océanos, la acidificación y el mal uso de la tierra interfieren significativamente con la capacidad de los arrecifes de coral de mantener sus complejas estructuras y biodiversidad, que proveen beneficios ecológicos a otras comunidades costeras, alimento y beneficios socio-económicos para pesquerías y turismo, y otros productos para uso industrial y farmacológico. Además, estas complejas estructuras protegen las costas de la erosión y daños por huracanes y tormentas.
“Es esencial entender cómo, cuándo y dónde las tasas de calcificación de los arrecifes de coral pueden dejar de mantener las estructuras de los arrecifes, pero estas preguntas han representado un desafío importante durante décadas debido a las dificultades asociadas con la cuantificación y evaluación de las tasas y los factores impulsores de la calcificación de los arrecifes de coral. Actualmente, estamos aplicando las herramientas computacionales que desarrollé durante mi doctorado y mi investigación posdoctoral para analizar más de 20 años de disminución del crecimiento de los arrecifes de coral para comprender mejor los cambios históricos en la construcción y el mantenimiento de estos en Puerto Rico y Florida”, narró.

El doctor Courtney, quien inició su jornada como docente en el RUM en julio de 2021, posee un doctorado en Oceanografía del Scripps Institution of Ocenography, de la Universidad de California en San Diego, donde obtuvo la Medalla de Disertación del Rector.
Desde su inicio en el recinto mayagüezano de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR), ha recibido varias importantes subvenciones para apoyar sus investigaciones relacionadas con los arrecifes de coral. Entre estas, recibió una subvención de $1,324,698 del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales de Puerto Rico para desarrollar un proyecto de monitoreo de la calidad del agua en áreas poco profundas de arrecifes de coral.
Los becarios de la cohorte 2024 provienen de 53 instituciones en los Estados Unidos y Canadá, incluyendo la UPR. Precisamente, Courtney fue nominado por el doctor Ernesto Weil Machado, director de Ciencias Marinas.

Municipio de Aguas Buenas inicia trabajos de escarificación y asfalto en la carretera estatal PR-156
La alcaldesa de Aguas Buenas, Karina Nieves Serrano, informó el inicio de los trabajos de escarificación y asfalto en la carretera estatal PR-156 mediante subasta a un costo ascendente de $908,541.60.
Estos trabajos se llevan a cabo luego de que el municipio firmara un convenio para estos fines con el Departamento de Transportación y Obras Públicas (DTOP) con el objetivo de mejorar la infraestructura vial y garantizar
la seguridad de los ciudadanos que transitan por esa vía. La alcaldesa de Aguas Buenas, Karina Nieves Serrano, expresó su satisfacción por este avance significativo; “El inicio de estos trabajos forman parte de la colaboración entre DTOP y el Municipio para mejorar nuestras carreteras estatales que dan acceso a nuestro pueblo. La PR-156 sufrió daños significativos debido a los pasados eventos atmosféricos de los huracanes. En su primera
fase debido a múltiples derrumbes, se construyeron muros de contención. Con el escarificado y asfalto estamos iniciando la segunda fase de mejoras para culminar los trabajos en esa carretera”.
La escarificación y asfalto de la PR-156 será desde el Km 40.0 jurisdicción de Comerío al Km 47.6 en jurisdicción de Aguas Buenas (Cruce de Emanuelli). Se espera que los trabajos concluyan a mediados del mes de abril.
For Shakira, 2022 was a year of heartbreak. Decades of hit singles and groundbreaking Latin-pop crossovers couldn’t insulate the Colombian pop star from personal upheavals. In the glare of celebrity coupledom, she broke up with soccer player Gerard Piqué, her partner for 11 years and the father of her two sons, Milan and Sasha. Her father was hospitalized twice for a fall that caused head trauma; he went on to require further brain surgery in 2023.
Shakira was also facing charges of tax evasion in a long-running case disputing whether she had lived primarily in Spain from 2012 to 2014; she declared residency there in 2015. Last November, she settled for a fine of 7.5 million euros (about $8.2 million), citing “the best interest of my kids.” Just days earlier, Shakira had collected the Latin Grammy for song of the year for “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” a collaboration with Argentine producer Bizarrap with wordplay clearly aimed at Piqué and his girlfriend.
The song was one of a string of singles Shakira released that referred directly to the breakup: the sarcastic “Te Felicito” (“I Congratulate You”); the regretful “Monotonía” (“Monotony”); the Bizarrap session, “Acróstico,” a ballad promising her children that she’d stay strong; and “TQG” (“Te Quedó Grande,” roughly translated as “I’m Too Good for You”), a taunting reggaeton duet with Colombian star Karol G, who had been through her own public breakup. “TQG” has racked up more than 1 billion streams.

where, she said, “I have the feeling I’ll be making a lot more music now.” Wearing a black tank top, with her hair in long blond waves, Shakira spoke happily and volubly about an album that, for her, was “alchemical.” These are edited excerpts from the conversation.
Q: Does the album tell a story? In the first songs, you’re wondering how to hold on to someone. But by the end, you’re pretty angry.
A: There is a narrative. It’s a conceptual album without it being my initial intention. You know, no one plans on going through a breakup the way I did. And the dissolution of a family — that is probably one of the most painful things a human can experience. But it happened. If life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. That’s what I did with this album — use my own creativity to process my frustration and my anger and my sadness. I transmuted or transformed pain into productivity.
Q: The album title, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran,” comes from the song that confronts the breakup most specifically: “Bzrp Sessions No. 53.”
A: It was the most direct one. But I star-
ted talking about what was happening to me through “Te Felicito” and “Monotonía.” In the video [for “Monotonía”], I come out with this hole in my chest, because that’s exactly the physical feeling that I had when I was going through my loss. I almost felt that people could see through my chest, see what was behind it. But with every song that I wrote, I was rebuilding myself. It was like putting my bones back together. That’s why I decided to go for this title, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” — “Women No Longer Cry.” Crying itself will always be a mechanism of survival for human beings. It’s an important part of living. And I feel like women today, we don’t need to be told how we’re supposed to heal, how we’re supposed to lick our wounds. We are the ones who have to move on and preserve our species, preserve the survival of our offspring — of the she-wolves that we are.
Q: One of the new songs, “(Entre Paréntesis),” ends with you bringing back the howl from “She Wolf.”
A: The she-wolf is all over this album. The she-wolf is what helped me rebuild myself. I had my times in which I howled at the moon, I licked my wounds. And I connected to that primal woman inside, to just sing and dance her pain away, to exorcise it. I think that women have this strength and this special intuition — this natural instinct of survival. When we really want to survive a situation, we just have to find that being within ourselves — to protect the pack.
I also found extreme support in women who have been through worse than me and
that have taught me amazing lessons. Society has been, for centuries, putting us in a place as victims — since the Inquisition, when they burnt us at the stake. But I think women are rebelling against that. We just have to fight for what we want and heal in whatever way we want. At some point those tears have to transform themselves into tears of triumph.
Q: Did your popularity, your celebrity, help get you through those rough years?
A: Not the fact of being a celebrity. I not only had to face the dissolution of my family — I had to do it with the journalists at my doorstep, with people talking about it, with me learning stuff from the press myself. It was really extremely painful. But my fans just know me and understand me and forgive my mistakes, and they support me, whatever decisions I make. I get emotional when I talk about it, because I honestly never thought that they would show up the way they showed up. But they have showed me the best version of myself, and they made me believe that I’m worth it and that I should go on. You know, them and my kids have definitely been the biggest help, the biggest support I’ve gotten.
I also had people who turned their backs on me — people who worked for me and betrayed me. And I had to face everything at the same time. And then my dad had a terrible accident that left him compromised neurologically. My dad has always been my best friend, so he wasn’t there to give me his best advice when I needed him the most. So it was a period of extreme pain.

Q: Through the years, you’ve done all sorts of duets and collaborations, and you have many more on this album. How do you decide who gets to make a song with Shakira?
A: It’s not a premeditated process. I think every song has its own demands. For “Punteria” (“Aiming”), I thought, “How cool would it be to have a woman rapper here?” The only person who came to my mind was Cardi B. I had just met her in Paris and she seemed so nice. So I reached out, I sent her the song, and she jumped on it right away. It was actually an enormous pleasure to work with her. I find her so creative and witty and direct and unapologetically genuine.
Q: You made two brassy songs with regional Mexican-style bands, Grupo Frontera and Fuerza Regida.
A: Colombia and Mexico have always had really close ties, and it was wonderful to experiment with this genre. One of the best studio sessions that I’ve ever had was with Grupo Frontera. I had just come from surfing in Malibu, and I went to the studio with my hair still wet, and they were there. They came in with this pure, genuine energy. We jam-
med through this song, and it was just one of the most fun, exhilarating moments I’ve had in the recording studio — a true musician’s moment.
Q: “El Jefe,” the song with Fuerza Regida, isn’t about love or heartbreak — it’s about a worker who’s underpaid and hates his boss.
A: I wanted to lend my voice for those who don’t have a voice. There’s quite a lot of people who can’t talk about their bosses. And in the video, I brought in this Colombian Paso Fino horse. It has the most amazing trot because it dances to the music, and I got to ride it!
Q: “Última” feels like one of the most emotionally exposed songs on the album — full of feelings about regret and memories and deciding not to go back.
A: It was the last song that came on the album, and that’s why I called it “The Last One.” We had all the tracks completed, but I was like, No, no, I can’t close this album. I’m going to choke on this song. This one is stuck here, it’s a cyst, I need to get it out. So I just went in the studio, produced it and wrote it, and I finished it and sang it in one day. And it’s also the last song that I plan on writing about you know who and the one that shouldn’t be named: Voldemort.
Without sodium, you wouldn’t be able to survive. Nerves would fail to fire; muscles wouldn’t contract. But experts say that most people consume far too much of it, increasing their risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.
In the United States, for instance, about 95% of men and 77% of women consume more than 2,300 milligrams per day, a limit federal health officials recommend.
But in recent decades, researchers have disagreed about exactly how much sodium is too much, with some suggesting that federal guidelines are too strict. Those reports captured our attention and left many people confused, said Dr. Lawrence Appel, a professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
But more recent research has clarified some of that murkiness, Appel said. We asked him and other experts to help set the record straight.
How does sodium affect health?
Scientific studies from the past 50 years or so have shown a clear pattern: “The more salt we eat, the higher our blood pressure goes,” said Cheryl Anderson, a professor of public health at the University of California, San Diego.
In a 2021 review of 85 clinical trials, for example, scientists looked at what happened to people’s blood pressure when they consumed 400 to 7,600 milligrams of sodium per day. As their consumption increased, the researchers reported, so did their blood pressure. The effect was strongest for people who already had high blood pressure, but the researchers also saw it in people who didn’t.
Managing your blood pressure is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your risk of developing heart disease or having a stroke, Anderson said. Nearly half of adults in the United States have high blood pressure. And researchers say that of all of the problems with our diets, sodium is the most harmful to global health: Excessive salt consumption causes close to 2 million deaths each year, they estimate, mainly from cardiovascular disease.
How much sodium is too much?
According to the U.S. dietary guidelines, adults should have no more than 2,300 milligrams — equivalent to about 1 teaspoon of table salt — per day. The World Health Organization and International Society of Hypertension have

a slightly lower limit at no more than 2,000 milligrams per day. And the American Heart Association says that while no more than 2,300 milligrams per day is a good target to aim for, it’s even better to avoid going over 1,500 milligrams per day, especially if you already have high blood pressure.
These guidelines are based on the best available evidence concerning high blood pressure and heart disease, said Dr. Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
But not all experts agree. In several studies published in the past decade or so, for instance, researchers reported that it was only people who consumed much more sodium — on the order of 5,000 milligrams per day — who had a greater risk of heart disease or earlier death. Those findings suggested that the sodium guidelines set by health organizations across the world were too strict, said Dr. Martin O’Donnell, a professor of neurovascular medicine at the University of Galway in Ireland.
This perspective garnered a lot of mainstream attention, Appel said. But other researchers found serious flaws with the contradictory studies; the main issue being that they could not accurately measure how much sodium people consumed, he added.
The sodium debate illustrates many of the challenges of nutrition research, Appel said. Large nutrition trials are much harder to conduct than large drug trials, he said, especially when looking at long-term health risks like heart attacks and strokes. Instead, nutrition researchers often rely on study designs that can only show associations between certain eating patterns and health, and conflicting results are common.
But the evidence to support reducing sodium consumption to the recommended levels is “pretty darn strong,” Appel said.
And, Hu added, “I don’t think we should wait for per-
fect evidence to take action.”
So, do I need to cut back on sodium?
If you have high blood pressure, reducing your sodium consumption will most likely help lower it, said Dr. Deepak K. Gupta, a cardiologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. This has been shown in many studies, including a 2023 trial led by Gupta, which suggested that, in most people, low-sodium diets reduced blood pressure about as well as a medication did.
But you shouldn’t wait until you have high blood pressure to think about sodium, said Alta Schutte, a professor of cardiovascular medicine at the George Institute for Global Health in Australia. Excess sodium throughout life can gradually damage blood vessels and eventually lead to high blood pressure. “It’s a cumulative effect,” she said.
Several recent trials have shown that adults with normal blood pressure who cut back on sodium were less likely to develop high blood pressure than those who didn’t reduce their consumption. “Prevention is certainly much better than treatment,” Hu said.
At the same time, these and other studies have shown that getting enough potassium may be just as important as cutting back on sodium, Schutte said. Getting adequate potassium from your diet can reduce your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, in part because potassium helps your kidneys remove extra sodium from your blood.
But some people should avoid consuming too much potassium. If you have kidney disease or are taking certain medications like potassium-sparing diuretics, check with your doctor before increasing your consumption, Schutte said. And those who are prone to low levels of sodium in their blood may not want to adopt a low-sodium diet, she added.
How will I know if I’m consuming the right amount?
The average adult in the United States consumes about 3,500 milligrams of sodium per day. And it can be challenging to cut back to 2,300 milligrams without making drastic dietary changes. It’s also difficult to know if you’re over the limit in the first place, since no simple test can measure this. But it’s not all or nothing, Hu said. Any reduction in sodium should be helpful for most people.
In the United States, about 70% of the sodium people consume comes from processed foods and dining out, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The best way to reduce your sodium consumption is to eat less of these foods and to cook more of your meals at home, Appel said.
Vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts and dairy products are all rich sources of potassium, and eating more of these foods can boost your potassium while also probably reducing your sodium, Hu said.
Keep in mind, O’Donnell said, that your overall eating pattern is more important than any one ingredient. The Mediterranean diet has been shown to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, he added, and it prioritizes many foods that are rich in potassium and don’t contain too much sodium.

TAMPA, Fla. — Aaron Judge felt silly. Giancarlo Stanton had just clobbered the baseball, sending it soaring over the batter’s eye in center field. But Judge, leading off second base in the first inning, jogged back to the bag to tag up out of habit. Then, Judge did it again the next inning, tagging up at first base on Stanton’s next no-doubter to left field.
“I think he got a little mad at me about that,” Judge said. “I won’t do that again.”
Stanton finished with three home runs in the New York Yankees’ 12-0 drubbing of the Pittsburgh Pirates at Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday night. It was his first time hitting three homers in any game.
“It is cool and it will be erased in about a week,” Stanton said. “Awesome.”
Even if spring training statistics are meaningless, the Yankees surely saw Stanton’s power display as a good sign. With the season opener Thursday against the Astros in Houston, the Yankees want to see that the work Stanton, 34, did in the offseason to change his swing and overhaul his body has paid off.
“Impressive to see him back doing what he does,” Judge said.
“He’s looked good all spring from the start,” manager Aaron Boone said. “I feel he’s been in control of his at-bats. He was really precise, and when he’s like that, he’s pretty scary.”
He was 3 for 3 with a sacrifice fly and eight runs batted in Wednesday. In 14 games, he was hitting .317 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 41 at-bats.
“I just see a guy in the batter’s box who’s a lot calmer in his approach,” hitting coach James Rowson said. “I think I’m watching a guy who’s not very anxious to do things, but it’s more about allowing the game to come to him a little bit. I think his alignment at the plate is
very good, just in terms of making sure his torso is squared up. I think he’s kind of checking the boxes of being in a good position to hit. Now, it’s a matter of seeing more pitches.”
Stanton is coming off two dismal seasons. In 2023, he stumbled to a .191 batting average, just 24 homers and 60 RBIs in 101 games as the Yankees finished fourth in the American League East. In 2022, he had a strong first half and was an All-Star, but an Achilles injury hampered him in the second half, and he finished with a .211 batting average and 31 homers.

“I’d say there’s an added edge to him,” Boone said.
Judge said he has noticed improvements in Stanton.

I feel like his bat is staying in the zone.” He added: “So, it’s impressive. He said he was going to put in a lot of work, and in the offseason, he goes and does his thing and he’s done it so far. I think we’re all excited to see what he does this year.”
Stanton showed up to spring training having dropped a lot of weight. His thighs, in particular, looked slimmer. He said he was trying to stay on the field more often. Since joining the Yankees in 2018, he has played in just 549 of a possible 870 regular-season games, or 63.1%.

It has put Stanton in a strange place. No stranger to boos in the Bronx, some fans on social media spent the offseason calling for the team to cut him and the $98 million they owe him through 2028. A drop in the lineup also seems likely. Stanton, typically the Yankees’ cleanup hitter, might bat sixth against right-handers — especially with the arrival of right fielder Juan Soto. On the first day of camp, he talked about how he has had one goal since arriving in the Bronx — winning a World Series — and he hasn’t achieved it.
