In light of the recent declaration of a dengue epidemic by the island Department of Health, the Puerto Rico Vector Control Unit, a program of the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, is urging the public to take immediate preventive measures against the spread of dengue in the archipelago.
The directive -- Administrative Order 2024-589, signed Tuesday by Health Secretary Carlos Mellado López -- comes at a crucial time when community participation and individual actions are critical in combating the increase in cases.
Dengue, transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, poses a significant risk to public health. However, the prevention of the disease is possible through the adoption of simple and effective measures.
The Vector Control Unit emphasized the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding sites, avoiding the accumulation of water in containers and brushing the inside walls of containers to remove mosquito eggs, and eliminating tires and other containers that can serve as habitat for these vectors.
In addition, it is recommended that screens be installed on doors and windows, along with wearing appropriate clothing such as light-colored long sleeves and pants, and applying insect repellents as additional protective measures.
“The declaration of an epidemic is a call to action. Every person has the power to make a significant contribution to dengue prevention. By taking simple preventive measures, we can protect our families and communities from the spread of this virus,” said Dr. Julieanne Miranda, associate director of the Vector Control Unit, in a written statement. “Our team continues to work collaboratively with the Department of
Health on mosquito surveillance and control strategies, but community engagement is essential in this fight. Together, we can make a difference.”
Meanwhile on Tuesday, HealthproMed, a nonprofit organization and community health center, activated a plan to unite its efforts to prevent and combat dengue, and announced the availability of the dengue vaccine for the pediatric population, including minors who are part of the immigrant population.
HealthproMed Executive Director Ivonne Rivera, accompanied by the organization’s main clinical adviser, pediatrician Dr. Héctor Villanueva, announced that, following the declaration of the public health emergency due to dengue, “HealthproMed once again joins the efforts of the Puerto Rico Department of Health in protecting public health, this time against the Dengue epidemic.”
“Our commitment to public health is reflected in the work of our health professionals in the prevention and control of dengue,” Rivera said in a written statement. “So much so that we were honored last year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Puerto Rico Department of Health for leading vaccination against dengue on the island.”
Villanueva detailed the indications for the dengue vaccine: “The dengue vaccine that we have available was approved for use in children aged 9 to 16 years with previous laboratory-confirmed infection, and who live in endemic areas like Puerto Rico.”
“It is part of the recommended vaccination schedule for children,” he said. “Dengvaxia, the only dengue vaccine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and recommended for routine use by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, became available in 2022.”
Rivera added that most health plans cover routine recommended vaccines, which are eligible for the Medicaid program or covered for Plan Vital beneficiaries.
Dr. Melissa Marzán, the Health Department’s chief epidemiology officer of the Department of Health, reiterated the classification of the dengue epidemic as a public health emergency on the island.
“The latest report reveals an alarming increase in dengue cases, with an increase of 140% compared to the same period last year,” she said. “As of March 25, 2024, the Department of Health has reported 549 dengue cases under surveillance and 341 hospitalizations so far this year.”
More information about dengue vaccination at HealthproMed can be obtained by contacting 787-268-4171, ext. 4008.
Because the number of bodies being donated to science is dwindling, the Anatomical Donations Board of the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus (RCM by its Spanish initials) is calling upon citizens to donate their bodies to help train the island’s future generation of health care professionals.
Donations Board Chairwoman Nivia Pérez Acevedo said that through the anatomical study of each donated body, around 420 students and health professionals receive training, education and the opportunity to carry out medical research each year.
“Each body is treated as a valuable gift that requires the highest care, respect, and gratitude for the selfless, altruistic gesture of donation,” said Pérez, who is also the interim associate dean of Biomedical Sciences at the School of Medicine and a professor in the RCM Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology. “Donating the body is an altruistic gesture that will benefit society through medicine and scientific research.”
As explained, the bodies donated to the board are used in medicine, dental medicine, physical and occupational therapy programs, master’s and doctoral programs in anatomy, sports and rehabilitation medicine, podiatry, pulmonology, obstetrics/gynecology, and training and research in medical residencies with emphasis on surgical and anatomical procedures, among others.
Despite its importance for teaching, the number of donations has decreased and in the past five years the
donations board has received 361 bodies in total. Of that amount, half were living donors, 24% were unclaimed bodies from the Institute of Forensic Sciences, 15% were donated by relatives of the deceased and 11% came from hospitals. There were no donations from nursing homes.
For this reason, Pérez called on citizens to make donations. In this way, not only RCM students will benefit, but also students from other institutions on the island such as Ponce Health Sciences, the Caguas School of Medicine and Central University of the Caribbean.
“Students gain invaluable experience and knowledge from the bodies donated to the Anatomical Donations Board,” Pérez said. “They acquire essential skills for their future practice by closely studying the structure of the
human body through direct contact since each body is different and unique. Each body donor becomes a source of knowledge.”
Those wishing to donate their bodies to science must know the following:
• Any person over 18 years of age in full use of their mental capacity can donate their body. There is no maximum age limit.
• You can register as a donor in several ways:
Call the board at 787-758-2525, ext. 1510 or 787751-5977.
Send an email to: juntadedonaciones.rcm@upr.edu
Visit the board from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at its UPR-RCM offices in the Dr. Guillermo Arbona Irizarry Building, 5th Floor Office A-543.
Start the process through the board’s donation form at https://www.123formbuilder.com/form-4574157/
• If you decide to donate your body, tell your family and friends. Carry your donor identification card with you. Tell your doctor and/or hospital that you are a body donor.
• Most religions support donation, considering it as a gift of life, health and knowledge for the benefit of all.
• A person’s family, caregiver or guardian can donate the body of a loved one to science once the doctor certifies the death.
• The results of studies carried out on bodies cannot be disclosed to family members or anyone else. They can only be considered for scientific evaluation and eventual publication in specialized journals, as long as the confidentiality of each donor’s identity is preserved.
In order to tackle domestic violence in Puerto Rico and expedite procedural transactions when a protection order is issued by responding quickly to the protection
of the victim, Sen. Keren Riquelme Cabrera announced Tuesday the filing of a package of measures, including Senate Bill 1445, to include in the Registry of Persons Convicted of Violations of the Prevention and the Intervention Act with the Domestic Violence (Law 54-1989) people who violate a protection order, as well as those convicted individuals who are in a diversion program.
The measure also creates a Rapid Response Code (QR Code), which will be displayed on signs located in public and private universities, along with other higher education entities, so that students can access the registry quickly.
“We are at an important moment in the fight against domestic violence, a social evil that we must eradicate,” Riquelme Cabrera said. “After evaluating a number of initiatives and proposals, we have developed these bills as part of a series of technological responses that are aimed at significantly improving prevention systems. The Registry of Violators of Law 54 is a cornerstone of prevention, which is why we are eliminating certain loopholes that it had, such as, for example, at this time it does not include people who violate a protection order [issued] under … Law
54. Likewise, it does not have those convicts who go to a diversion program; this legislation includes all of them.”
Acting Women’s Advocate Madeline Bermúdez Sanabria, highlighted the importance of augmenting the tools that help with the prevention of gender-based violence.
“Any initiative aimed at supporting victims of violence must be evaluated with the responsibility and sensitivity that this issue deserves,” she said. “Developing new tools that help a victim in seeking help and assistance is an initiative that we have always considered necessary and that has our support. We have seen how due to a lack of communication between the agencies, lives have unfortunately been lost, and this matter has to be addressed quickly, always making the well-being and safety of victims a priority. We are at a crucial moment and it is important that we all help eradicate this evil that affects our society so much.”
The registry was created by Law 59-2019 and currently has 1,769 convicts. The most common crime, with 610 instances, is the violation of Article 3.1 (ill treatment) in the form of a serious attempt.
TheJudge Daniel López González on Tuesday denied a request from lawyers representing suspended Ponce Mayor Luis Irizarry Pabón seeking to dismiss criminal and ethical charges against him, according to an announcement by the Office of the Special Independent Prosecutor (SIP Office).
Irizarry Pabón is facing charges for illicit enrichment under Article 251 of the Penal Code and for violating the Government Ethics Code. The decision means that the suspended mayor will now go to trial. The SIP Office filed charges against Irizarry Pabón for allegedly soliciting money from his employees to repay a $50,000 personal loan.
The resolution upheld that SIPs Zulma I. Fúster Troche, Ileana Agudo Calderón and Fabiola Acaró Porrata-Doria did not violate

The mayor’s attorney, José Antonio Andreu Fuentes, had requested the dismissal of the case against Irizarry Pabón on the grounds that the affidavit of a witness before the Office of the Electoral Comptroller represents exculpatory evidence.

But if we had proven it, there
Fúster Troche had said: “What the defense is doing is an act of total desperation. Here, in the face of the forceful testimony that you heard this morning, what the defense does is use any excuse to take a breath and gain time. That’s what we’re seeing here, a delay of justice brought about by the defense in this case.”
She referred to testimony from Ponce’s former director of Municipal Public Works, Oscar Iván Nazario Segarra, who had described during the preliminary hearing how he paid the personal loan of $50,000 at the request of Irizarry Pabón.
The witnesses were excused until April 10, when the date was set for the continuation of the case in the preliminary hearing stage.
Political candidates from the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC by its Spanish initials) and Dignity Project (PD) who were disqualified from running in the election by a recent court ruling are filing an appeal today, the STAR learned. State Elections Commission (SEC) Interim Chairwoman Jessika Padilla Rivera, meanwhile, rejected rumors that she intervened in the court ruling that resulted in the disqualification of some six candidates from the MVC and PD.
“I would like to know what statements I made to any candidate, to any representative, even to the Electoral Commissioner, who was the one we work with weekly, what statements I made that could have misled any of the candidates or the Electoral Commissioner,” Padilla Rivera said in a radio interview. “I have not made any statements regarding whether or not the party had to collect endorsements, neither to them nor to any party.”
A judge recently disqualified the candidates because they had failed to obtain endorsements as required by the Electoral Code.
MVC Rep. Mariana Nogales Molinelli said she believes the Appeals Court, where they will go today, will reverse Judge Anthony Cuevas’ decision.
“I’m sure you’re going to see something that Judge Anthony Cuevas says and that I know exists, but I can’t tell you,” she said.
Padilla Rivera, meanwhile, refuted allegations made by former San Juan Mayor Héctor Luis Acevedo to the effect that the SEC has yet to register numerous young voters in the island’s public schools to vote. The government closed numerous Juntas de Inscripcion Permanente, or Permanent Voting Registration Board offices, limiting voting registration.
Padilla Rivera said the SEC has visited more than 100 educational institutions so far in 2024.
“I don’t know where Mr. Acevedo gets his information from. That information was not requested from the Commission,” she
said. “We have visited over 100 schools […], we have visited elderly homes, we have visited churches, fairs, on Saturdays we are registering voters. Currently, more than 18,873 students are enrolled to vote.”
Agriculture (DA) Secretary Ramón González Beiró announced on Tuesday that as a precautionary measure he has established additional requirements for issuing import permits for cattle and has stopped importations until the situation stabilizes, after being alerted by the federal government about the health of cattle in the states of Texas and Kansas with possible avian influenza infections.
“At this time, our staff has already inspected the cattle that we had previously received from Texas and the United States and there are no signs of infection so far,” González Beiró said in a written statement following the issuance of
Administrative Order 2024-27.
“Of course, we are in communication with federal agencies and are evaluating livestock to ensure the quality of the animals that are reaching our population.”
The DA chief said his agency has received communications from the Texas Animal Health Commission alerting them about the situation impacting the health of livestock. Some of the symptoms of the disease include decreased milk production, impact on the quality of milk produced, decreased feed intake, diarrhea and fever, among others. However, the risk to the population is low.
“As we constantly receive animals from the United States, we must take precautionary measures to prevent the entry of
the disease into Puerto Rico,” González Beiró said. “In view of this situation, under the provisions of Law 69 of June 18, 1957 and the import requirements established by the Department’s Agrological Laboratory, in addition to halting importation for the next few days until the situation improves, it will be necessary for the applicant for an Import Permit to comply with all the requirements established so far. In addition, it is necessary to report or certify the farm of origin of the cattle. All applications will be notified for consent before being approved.”
It should be noted that according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, tests carried out on livestock did not detect any change in the virus that could make it spread more easily to the population.
Amassive cargo ship leaving the Port of Baltimore lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before striking a major bridge early Tuesday, giving officials a brief chance to stop cars and try to evacuate the span before it fell into the river.
By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the Francis Scott Key Bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued.
Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland called the episode a terrible accident. “We haven’t seen any credible evidence of a terrorist attack,” he said. The bridge is part of Interstate 695.
Initially, officials feared that drivers were submerged in their cars in the Patapsco River. But the warning from the Dali, a Singapore-flagged vessel, gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge, according to several federal and Maryland officials.
The people who blocked traffic “undoubtedly saved lives,” President Joe Biden said from the White House on Tuesday. He added that the Coast Guard would continue search-and-rescue efforts and that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would clear the channel
to help reopen Baltimore to ship traffic. “We’re going to rebuild that port together,” he said.
Here are more details:
— Moore declared a state of emergency and said his
office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was investigating.

— Despite the ship’s mayday call, the road repair crew remained on the bridge, with its vehicles parked on the span, authorities said. One of the two rescued construction workers was in the hospital Tuesday morning.
— The Dali, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel, hit a pillar of the bridge around 1:30 a.m., the ship’s owners said. All crew members, including two harbor pilots who were directing the vessel at the time of the crash, were accounted for, and there were no injuries on the ship, the owners said.
— The Dali had left Baltimore at 1 a.m. and was bound for Colombo, Sri Lanka, according to MarineTraffic, a maritime data platform.
— An inspection of the Dali last year at a port in Chile reported that the vessel had a deficiency related to “propulsion and auxiliary machinery.” The inspection, conducted on June 27 at the port of San Antonio, specified that the deficiency concerned gauges and thermometers. A spokesperson for the Dali’s owners declined to comment on the report.
— The bridge was named for Francis Scott Key, the Maryland-born author of the American national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The structure opened in 1977. Some 30,000 commuters drive on it each day, Maryland officials said.
The New York judge presiding over one of Donald Trump’s criminal trials imposed a gag order Tuesday that prohibits him from attacking witnesses, prosecutors and jurors, the latest effort to rein in the former president’s wrathful rhetoric about his legal opponents.
The judge, Juan Manuel Merchan, imposed the order at the request of the Manhattan district attorney’s office, which brought the case against Trump. The district attorney, Alvin Bragg, has accused Trump of covering up a potential sex scandal during and after his 2016 campaign.
The ruling comes on the heels of Merchan setting an April 15 trial date, rejecting Trump’s latest effort to delay the proceeding. It will mark the first criminal prosecution of a former American president.
Trump recently clinched the Republican presidential nomination for the third time, and with three other criminal cases against him mired in delay, the Manhattan case could be the only one to go to trial before voters head to the polls in November.
Under the judge’s gag order, Trump cannot make, or
direct others to make, statements about witnesses’ roles in the case. Trump is also barred from commenting on prosecutors and court staff as well as their relatives — if the statements were intended to interfere with their work on the case.
In seeking the gag order last month, Bragg’s prosecutors highlighted Trump’s “long-standing history of attacking witnesses, investigators, prosecutors, judges and others involved in legal proceedings against him” — comments that the judge seized on in his ruling.
“His statements were threatening, inflammatory, denigrating,” Merchan wrote in the Tuesday order.
Trump, for example, has taken aim at Michael Cohen, his onetime fixer and one of Bragg’s main witnesses, calling him a “liar” and a “rat.”
In a rambling and angry post on his social media site Tuesday, Trump made an ominous reference to Cohen, claiming without explanation that his former fixer was “death.” He also referred to one of Bragg’s prosecutors in pejorative terms.
Both comments would now arguably violate the gag order. In another post, Trump took aim at Merchan and his family, claiming that the judge “hates me,” although those comments do not appear to cross the line the judge has now set.
President Joe Biden, amping up a populist pitch in his reelection campaign, has repeatedly said he would raise taxes on the wealthy and corporations to make them pay their “fair share.”
Republicans say Biden has “an unquenchable thirst for taxing the American people.” His Republican opponent in the election, former President Donald Trump, said recently that Biden was “going to give you the greatest, biggest, ugliest tax hike in the history of our country.”
So it might come as a surprise that, in just over three years in office, Biden has cut taxes overall.
The math is straightforward. An analysis

credit for parents. It provided $1,400 direct checks for low- and middle-income Americans, which were technically advance payments on tax credits.
Biden has partly offset all of his tax cuts with a pair of major new levies. Corporations are now required to pay a tax when they buy back their own stock. Another tax requires large corporations to pay a minimum 15% federal income tax, even if they qualify for deductions that would have made them owe less.
The president has also directed tens of billions of dollars to the IRS to help crack down on high earners and corporations that evade paying the taxes they owe — an effort that will increase federal tax revenues but does not increase tax rates.
But the president has struggled to persuade Congress — including a sufficient number of Democrats, in the two years his party controlled the House and the Senate on his watch — to sign on to a fleet of other proposed tax increases.

prepared for The New York Times by the UrbanBrookings Tax Policy Center, a Washington think tank that studies fiscal issues, shows that the tax cuts Biden has signed for individuals and corporations are larger than the tax increases he has imposed on big corporations and their shareholders.
The analysis estimates that the tax changes Biden has ushered into law will amount to a net cut of about $600 billion over four years and slightly more than that over a full decade.
“It’s reasonable to conclude from those numbers that the Biden tax policy hasn’t been some kind of radical tax-raising program,” said Benjamin R. Page, a senior fellow at the center and author of the analysis.
The analysis strictly looks at changes to taxes over the course of Biden’s presidency, including some direct benefits to people and businesses that flow through the tax code. It does not measure the effects of inflation or certain regulations, which Republicans sometimes label “tax hikes” since they can raise costs for companies and individuals.
It also does not measure the social or economic benefits of Biden’s spending policies, or of his regulatory efforts meant to help consumers, like cracking down on so-called junk fees and limiting the cost of insulin and other medication.
Instead, the analysis provides a comprehensive look at what Biden has done to the tax
code, and how those policies add up.
It is clear by that measure that his record has not matched his own ambitions for taxing the rich and big companies — or Republicans’ attempts to caricature him as a tax-and-spend liberal.
That’s largely because Biden has struggled to pass his most ambitious tax-raising plans. “It’s what can be got through Congress and signed,” Page said. “They were subject to compromise.”
A White House spokesperson, Michael Kikukawa, said in an email that Biden was “proud to have cut taxes for the middle class and working families while cracking down on wealthy tax cheats and making big corporations pay more of their fair share.”
The president’s enacted tax cuts include incentives for companies to manufacture and install solar panels, wind turbines and other technologies meant to reduce fossil fuel emissions, which are a centerpiece of the climate law he signed in 2022. That law also contained tax cuts for people who buy certain low-emission technologies, such as electric vehicles and heat pumps.
Biden gave tax breaks to semiconductor factories as well, as part of a bipartisan advanced manufacturing bill he signed earlier that year.
The president also included temporary tax breaks for individuals and certain businesses in his 2021 economic stimulus bill, the American Rescue Plan. The legislation expanded a tax
Biden’s budget requests have been filled with ideas for taxing high earners and corporations. Those have failed to gain traction on Capitol Hill. His most recent budget includes about $5 trillion of tax increases spread over a decade, including long-standing Democratic plans like raising the corporate income tax rate to 28% from 21%.
Republicans assailed Biden for tax plans they say will cripple the economy. Rep. Jodey Arrington, R-Texas, chair of the Budget Committee, said in a hearing Thursday that Biden believed “in more government and more spending and more taxing as the answers to the problems that our country faces.”
Biden has emphasized his tax proposals in recent weeks, including during his State of the Union address. The president has repeatedly said he would not raise taxes on people earning less than $400,000 a year, while calling on millionaires and billionaires to pay more.
He has also vaunted his tax record, as he did last week in Las Vegas. “In 2020, 55 of the largest Fortune 500 companies made $40 billion in profits,” Biden said. “They paid zero in federal taxes. Not anymore.”
Biden was referring to the corporate minimum tax created by the Inflation Reduction Act, the 2022 law that also included the climate-related tax incentives. The Treasury Department has struggled to implement that tax, which companies faced for the first time last year.
The department does not yet have data on how many corporations will pay the tax for 2023, officials said this week.
U.S. stocks were little changed on Tuesday, giving up modest gains late in the session, as investors awaited economic data in a holiday-shortened week to gauge the Federal Reserve’s policy path.
Stocks struggled for upward momentum even as Tesla gained after CEO Elon Musk unveiled the electric-vehicle maker’s one-month trial of its Full Self-Driving technology to existing and new customers in the United States. The stock is up nearly 5% for the week but remains down nearly 28% for the year.
The focus remains on a key reading of the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index (PCE), the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge. The data is due on Friday, when U.S. markets will be shut for the Good Friday holiday.
The index is expected to have risen 0.4% in February and 2.5% annually. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy components, is estimated to have advanced 0.3% last month, keeping the annual pace at 2.8%, economists polled by Reuters said.
“The big number is Friday. That’s the number everyone’s going to pay attention to and whatever happens in the meantime is going to be noise, so I don’t anticipate a whole lot happening until we get that data point,” said Stephen Massocca, senior vice president at Wedbush Securities in San Francisco.
“The one thing that would be death, death for this market is if somehow something came out that led people to believe that the fed funds rate has not topped out yet. If for some reason people thought the Fed was even giving an inkling to raising rates further, stand out of the way.”
On the economic front, orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods increased more than expected in February, while business spending on equipment showed tentative signs of recovery. In a separate report, the Conference Board said its consumer confidence index was little changed at 104.7 in March.
nalysts expect the PCE data to show inflation gathered heat in February, with prices rising by 0.4% after January’s 0.3% gain. However, so-called “core” price inflation, which strips away volatile food and energy prices, is seen cooling to 0.3% from 0.4%.
Year-on-year, headline and core PCE price indexes are expected land at 2.5% and 2.8%, respectively, still hovering within one percentage point of the Fed’s average annual 2% target.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 123.25 points, or 0.31%, to 39,352.65, the S&P 500 lost 8.37 points, or 0.16%, to 5,225.81 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 18.92 points, or 0.12%, to 16,409.90.
European stocks traded narrowly around unchanged after Friday’s record highs as market participants digested dovish sentiment from major central banks.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 0.13% and MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe shed 0.11%.
According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 lost 14.09 points, or 0.27%, to end at 5,204.10 points, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 68.77 points, or 0.42%, to 16,320.64. The
Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 19.06 points, or 0.05%, to 39,294.58.
The three major U.S. indexes hit record highs last week after the Fed maintained its projection for three interest-rate cuts this year.
Markets have been slowly increasing expectations the central bank will cut rates by at least 25 basis points in June, currently pricing in a 70.4% chance, the CME’s FedWatch Tool showed, up from 59.2% last week.
Trump Media & Technology group surged as it kicked off its first day of trading after completing a reverse merger with a blank check firm.
First, it was María Corina Machado, a popular former legislator. Then, it was supposed to be Corina Yoris, a little-known philosophy professor. But now, an opposition coalition has been blocked from fielding any candidate to run against President Nicolás Maduro in elections scheduled for July.
The coalition of opposing political parties, the Democratic Unity Roundtable, had hoped that uniting behind a single candidate would make it a viable challenger to Maduro.
But on Monday, a national electoral commission controlled by allies of Maduro used a technical maneuver to prevent the coalition from putting a candidate on
the ballot. It was the last day for presidential candidates to register for the July vote.
As a result Maduro, whose repressive rule has left Venezuela in financial ruin and helped push out roughly one-fourth of its population, is increasingly likely to hold onto power.
The Democratic Unity Roundtable announced last week that it had agreed to put forward Yoris, 80, to run against Maduro in a show of unity after the country’s highest court in January had barred Machado from the ballot. The former lawmaker was widely considered to be a significant threat to Maduro.
The naming of Yoris briefly raised hopes that a free and fair election might be possible. But as the week progressed, Yoris said she was unable to access the digital platform set up by the country’s
electoral authority to register as a candidate.
Every authorized political organization in Venezuela is given a code to access the electoral platform. But both Yoris’ party, A New Era, as well as the Democratic Unity Roundtable coalition, said that their codes were not working, preventing them from registering not just Yoris but any candidate at all.
“We have exhausted all avenues,” said Yoris in a news conference Monday morning. “The whole country is left with no choice if I can’t sign up.”
As the day went on confusion ensued amid signs that behind the scenes the government was trying to pull the levers of power and ensure an electoral field that would give Maduro a better chance of winning.
Just minutes before the registration deadline, the New Era party inexplicably was allowed to register a different candidate: Manuel Rosales, the party’s founder and governor of the populous state of Zulia, whose entry into the race was seen by political analysts as rubber-stamped by Maduro.
“There is no doubt that Maduro wants to choose who to run against and is afraid to run against anyone who represents a threat to him,” said Tamara Taraciuk Broner, who researches Venezuela for the Inter-American Dialogue, a Washingtonbased research organization.
Rosales, in a speech Tuesday, said he intended to run a rigorous campaign, vowing to “lead the biggest rebellion of votes that has ever existed.”
Two other candidates registered Monday, bringing the total number running in the election to 12, including Maduro. Most are considered close to the president and none is regarded a serious challenger.
The confusion over who is and is not allowed to run is a deliberate tactic of the Maduro administration to sow distrust among the electorate and divide the vote, according to Rafael Uzcátegui, a sociologist and a director of the Peace Laboratory, a human rights organization based in Caracas, Venezuela.
Machado, in a news conference Tuesday, said Rosales had been chosen by the
government and that she was still throwing her support behind Yoris.
“These are very difficult hours, there are deep disappointments, there is a lot of anger, there is a lot of indignation. Many people feel that they were cheated.” she said. “What we warned for many months ended up happening: The regime chose its candidates.”
There could still be ways for the opposition to mount a challenge to Maduro. Machado could seek an extension of the deadline to register a candidate. Candidates can still name replacements in the coming weeks, leaving open the possibility that Rosales or someone else might step aside. A third option, said Dib, is that the opposition could unite around Rosales.
Despite the setbacks, Machado said the opposition was not giving up.
“Nobody is taking us out of the electoral route,” Machado said. “They are the ones who want to shut it down. They are the ones who want to take us out and they are not going to succeed.”
In October, Maduro signed an accord with the country’s opposition and agreed to work toward a free and fair presidential vote. Maduro said he would hold an election before the end of this year, and, in exchange, the United States, in a sign of good will, lifted some economic sanctions.
Days later, Machado won more than 90% of the vote to choose an opposition candidate, in a primary election run by a commission without the involvement of the government. The decisive results underscored her popularity and raised the prospect that she could beat Maduro in a general election.
Three months later, the country’s top court, filled with government loyalists, declared Machado ineligible to run over what the judges claimed were financial irregularities that occurred when she was a national legislator.
Six of Machado’s campaign aides have been arrested in recent weeks and six more have arrest warrants against them and are in hiding. Men on motorbikes have attacked supporters at her events.
The government has not commented on the opposition’s inability to register.

(Adriana Loureiro Fernandez/The New York Times)Migrants were streaming across the U.S. southern border in record numbers, international rail bridges were abruptly shut down and official ports of entry closed.
Desperate for help in December, President Joe Biden called President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico, who told him to quickly send a delegation to the Mexican capital, according to several U.S. officials.
The White House rushed to do so. Soon after, Mexico beefed up enforcement. Illegal border crossings into the United States plummeted by January.
As immigration moves to the forefront of the U.S. presidential campaign, Mexico has emerged as a key player on an issue with the potential to sway the election, and the White House has worked hard to preserve López Obrador’s cooperation.
The administration says publicly that its diplomacy has been a success.
But behind closed doors, some senior Biden officials have come to see López Obrador as an unpredictable partner, who they say isn’t doing enough to consistently control his own southern border or police routes being used by smugglers to bring millions of migrants to the United States, according to several U.S. and Mexican officials. None of them would speak on the record about delicate diplomatic relations.
“We aren’t getting the cooperation we should be getting,” said John Feeley, former deputy chief of mission in Mexico from 2009 to 2012. Feeley said the two countries did more joint patrols and investigations to secure the border during the Obama administration.
“I know what it looks like when there is genuine cooperation,” Feeley said, “as opposed to what we have now, which is being touted as great cooperation but I think is bupkis.”
While in office, President Donald Trump used the threat of tariffs to coerce López Obrador into implementing his crackdown on migration.
Biden needs Mexico just as much, but has taken a different approach, focusing instead on avoiding conflict with the powerful and sometimes volatile Mexican leader in hopes it will preserve his cooperation.
“AMLO has correctly assessed his leverage and has acknowledged that we’re using ours,” said Juan Gonzalez, Biden’s former top Latin America adviser, using López Obrador’s nickname.
Liz Sherwood-Randall, U.S. homeland security adviser, said that the White House works “collaboratively at the highest levels with the government of Mexico,” adding: “President Lopez Obrador has been a critically important partner to President Biden.”
Since 2022, Mexico has added hundreds of immigration checkpoints and increased enforcement personnel tenfold, according to figures provided by the U.S. State Department. Mexico is also detaining more migrants than at any point in recent history.

Yet, the numbers arriving at the southern border have remained stubbornly high. There were more than 2 million illegal border crossings in each of the past two fiscal years, twice as many as in 2019, the busiest year for apprehensions under Trump.
The lull at the start of this year was still one of the highest January months on record for illegal crossings, according to U.S. federal data. Apprehensions ticked up again in February.
In Mexico, officials say they have reached the limit of what they are able to achieve in the face of an extraordinary influx that has overwhelmed their country, too.
López Obrador has pushed the White House to commit more development aid to Latin American countries, to address the issues that cause migrants to leave in the first place.
“We do want for the root causes to be attended to, for them to be seriously looked at,” he told CBS’ “60 Minutes” in an interview that aired Sunday. When asked whether he would continue to secure the border even if the United States didn’t do what he asked, López Obrador said, “Yes, because our relationship is very important.”
Migration has spiked because of factors difficult for any one government to control: persistent poverty, raging violence, the effects of climate change and the lingering impact of the coronavirus pandemic that have left people desperate for any chance at survival.
Yet Mexican officials also blame American policies, saying migrants have an incentive to come to the United States because the asylum system is so backlogged that migrants have a good chance of staying in the country for years until their case has been decided.
In recent months, the authorities in Tijuana have raided hotels and safe houses, increased security at official crossings and installed new checkpoints along a once-deserted section of the border near the city where migrants were passing through a gap in the wall.
Nothing worked for long.
The authorities’ crackdown has only put migrants in greater danger, aid groups say, leading smugglers to take people on riskier routes through the vast desert, where they often get lost and are found dehydrated.
One night in February, a smuggler dropped a group of 18 people miles from the border, telling them they would quickly find a gap in the wall. In the darkness, the group got lost and walked for hours until finally crossing into California and making it to a makeshift camp where migrants often squeeze into portable bathrooms for shelter.
Two-year-old Denver Gonzalez could not stop sobbing.
“I am cold, I want to sleep,” the boy screamed repeatedly, as his father wrapped his tiny frame in blankets donated by a local volunteer.
“You pressure them at one point, and they go to another place,” said David Pérez Tejada, head of the Baja California office of Mexico’s National Immigration Institute, referring to the smugglers. “It’s all a game of cat and mouse, and it is extremely difficult to control this.”
The White House has pushed the Mexican government to increase deportations, implement visa restrictions for more countries to make it difficult to enter Mexico and bolster security forces at its southern border.
Since 2022, the Mexican government has added hundreds of immigration checkpoints, bolstered security along train routes used by migrants to travel north and increased enforcement personnel tenfold, according to figures provided by the U.S. State Department. Mexico is also detaining more migrants than at any point in recent history.
Yet truckloads of migrants continue to drive up through the country, in part because smugglers often pay off the checkpoint authorities, U.S. officials say.
The Biden administration wants Mexico to increase deportations. Mexico’s foreign ministry said last week it had reached an agreement with Venezuela to deport migrants and help them find jobs.
The White House has also pressed Mexico to do more of what some officials call “decompression,” which involves transporting people away from the border to somewhere deep in the country.
“People are being detained by Mexican authorities and sent to random cities in the south,” said Erika Pinheiro, executive director of Al Otro Lado, or “To the Other Side,” a humanitarian group. “Forcing them to trek back north, pay bribes to authorities and take all those risks all over again is inhumane.”

By ROSS DOUTHATIf you believe President Joe Biden’s aides and allies, he intends to fight the 2024 election primarily on the threat that Donald Trump poses to American democracy. In their view, this worked in 2020, when Biden promised to protect the “soul of the nation” from Trump’s depredations, and again in the 2022 midterms, when Biden made the threat to democracy his closing argument and Democrats then overperformed. So there’s no reason it can’t work just one more time.
By the time November rolls around, Biden’s longtime

adviser Mike Donilon told The New Yorker’s Evan Osnos recently, “the focus will become overwhelming on democracy. I think the biggest images in people’s minds are going to be of Jan. 6.”
I have been unsure how seriously we should take this kind of talk. Biden’s argument about democratic norms did seem to pay off in some key races in 2022, but I’m less convinced that it made the difference in 2020, at least relative to Biden’s promise to be a steady hand and his reputation for ideological moderation. And either way, 2024 is a different context still, in which Biden appears to be struggling most with disaffected working-class voters, a constituency that you would expect to respond more strongly to material appeals than to highminded arguments about civics.
To the extent that the White House knows this, we should probably take quotes like Donilon’s with a grain of salt. Maybe he was just dispatched to manage Biden’s liberal base, to preach the gospel of anti-Trumpism to a liberal publication’s readers while someone else gets to work on the more traditional economic appeals to swing voters.
But the past week has given us a good illustration of what it would look like if the White House fully believed in Donilon’s argument, and regarded its invocations of Jan. 6 as a potent alternative to the usual forms of outreach and moderation.
First you had the zeal with which the president’s campaign latched onto Trump’s comments, at an Ohio rally, about the “blood bath” that would supposedly follow Biden’s reelection. In context, the term “blood bath” definitely referred to a predicted collapse of the U.S. auto industry if Biden gets another term, and arguably predicted some form of general chaos or disaster. But it was immediately elevated and interpreted by Biden (or his social media ghostwriter) as proof that Trump “wants another Jan. 6.”
Then, just as the great “blood bath” debate began dying down, Biden’s EPA announced sweeping new emissions rules intended to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, taking their sales from around 8% of the U.S. market today to 56% in 2032.
These rules have been in the works for some time, and from the point of view of climate activists and internal Democratic Party politics, their substance represents a political compromise, wherein the biggest shift is pushed off by a few years and hybrids as well as fully electric cars count toward the target.
From the point of view of swing-voter outreach in a presidential election year, however, the new rules seem like a pretty reckless bet. Explicitly seeking the rapid disappearance of the kinds of automobiles used by the vast majority of Americans would be politically fraught under any circumstances. It’s even more fraught in an election where states like Michigan hold the key to an Electoral College victory.
And it is especially fraught at a time when higher interest rates have made automobile loans more expensive for the American consumer — who is in effect now being told by an unpopular incumbent president: “If you like your car, I don’t
want you to keep it.”
To summarize: First, Trump made an apocalyptic statement about the effects of Biden’s policies on the auto industry. Then the Biden team eagerly overhyped that statement as proof of Trump’s unfitness. Then the Biden administration rolled out a plan to radically transform the auto industry, which even if it worked as intended would, as a newsroom colleague reported, “require enormous changes in manufacturing, infrastructure, technology, labor, global trade and consumer habits.”
In other words, the Biden camp elevated Trump’s rant against its car industry policies and then set up the ripest possible policy target for his next round of attacks.
This is probably just an instance of an administration’s political arm and its policy shop operating without any especially savvy coordination. But it’s a good case study of how a “Jan. 6 trumps everything” theory of 2024 could go badly wrong — by encouraging a fatal insouciance about the material concerns of working-class Americans on the theory that any Trumpian attempt to exploit those concerns can be preemptively defused by casting the former president as a fascist.
The path to a Biden victory involves making the case against Trump on anti-authoritarian grounds and material grounds at the same time. Whereas imagining that the antiauthoritarian card is powerful enough to let you get away with unpopular liberal activism on other issues seems like the likeliest path to a Biden defeat.say: Torture is not normal,” he tweeted Sunday. “Torture as a phenomenon should not

When voice actor Alison Sealy-Smith first received an email asking if she’d be interested in reprising her role as Storm, from “X-Men: The Animated Series,” she nearly marked the message as spam, shrugging it off as either a joke or a mistake. It had been three decades since she had worked on the action-adventure cartoon, which ran on Fox from 1992-97, and the idea that it would be returning, let alone returning with its original cast, seemed so unlikely that she could hardly entertain it.
“At first, it was strictly disbelief,” she said in a video interview. “It can’t be true. Disney is doing this again? It didn’t make any sense.”
Disney was indeed doing it again, and after three years in production, the original “X-Men: The Animated Series” has returned as “X-Men ’97,” a revival streaming on Disney+ that the studio is treating as a direct continuation of the ’90s show. The new series picks up where “The Animated Series” left off with its Season 5 finale in September 1997, with the loss of X-Men leader Professor X after an attack by anti-mutant lobbyist Henry Peter Gyrich. It is designed to look and feel, in essence, like Season 6, with the intervening 30-year gap hardly noticeable on screen.
“That was always the goal,” Jake Castorena, a supervising producer and director, said in an interview. “To go straight from the OG show to our show, and it feels connected.”
The level of fidelity is impressive, and early reviews have been effusive, with one critic describing it as “nostalgia handled perfectly.”
But the achievement has been slightly undermined by news that the showrunner, Beau DeMayo, had been fired by Marvel. The move was sudden: On March 11, publicists for Disney, Marvel’s corporate owner, canceled DeMayo’s planned interview for this article, saying his “scheduling has changed,” and the following day The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that he had been fired. Marvel and Disney did not provide an explanation for the move. DeMayo and his representatives did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
DeMayo hasn’t publicly addressed his departure, and the lack of information has fueled speculation online about the reasons for his termination. His former co-workers say they’re as clueless as anyone about what happened and why.
“I have absolutely no details whatsoever about what’s going on — that’s a paygrade about 50,000 rungs above my head,” Sealy-Smith said the morning after the news about DeMayo came

out. “But I thoroughly enjoyed working with Beau. I loved his meticulously plotted storytelling.”
Brad Winderbaum, an executive producer on “X-Men ’97” and the head of TV, streaming and animation at Marvel Studios, acknowledged that beginning the series under the cloud of this controversy has been difficult. He reiterated that “the show speaks for itself.”
Winderbaum and the rest of the “X-Men ’97” team seemed eager to redirect the focus to the show and to the hard work that went into re-creating the original. Emulating the look and feel of a 30-year-old animated series was “much harder than it seems,” Winderbaum said.
“It’s counterintuitive,” he said. “You would think, we’ve got the template in front of us, so let’s just do that. But it’s actually like running a controlled experiment.”
The original show’s hand-drawn animation was constrained by time and budgetary concerns; to achieve that look, the
new team had to put technical limitations on itself, restricting the kinds of flourishes that are easy with computers.
“Here we are 30 years later, and we had to create these artificial parameters to inform the style,” Winderbaum said.
Getting the look exactly right also involved a lot of experimentation, including working with custom filters that could replicate the aesthetic of old-school VHS broadcasts.
“All of it was all meticulously planned out, frame by frame,” Castorena said. “From the color palettes we use to the atmosphere to the noise grain to the chromatic aberration on the sides of the screen just slightly.”
Before they even started producing episodes, he explained, they were hard at work tinkering with the style until it looked faithful to the original.
“It was a learning process,” he said. “It might look awesome but not quite right — too clean, too HD. It was a good challenge to find that sweet spot.”
DeMayo was the public face of “X-Men ’97” during its production. He was active on social media, frequently posting updates about the series on X, formerly Twitter, and Instagram, and often addressing questions and concerns from interested fans. He also maintained an OnlyFans account, though in a 2022 profile, Out magazine said that he was not “publishing any hard-core X-rated content.” (On his personal website, DeMayo described the OnlyFans account as “a place for me to continue growing and pushing my own boundaries when it comes to my body and sexuality.”)
Since his firing, the OnlyFans account has been removed, and DeMayo appeared to deactivate all of his social media accounts. His Instagram has since been reactivated, but most of the posts appear to have been deleted or archived.
Castorena, the supervising producer, said that he couldn’t speak for DeMayo, who had previously worked on the popular Netflix fantasy drama “The Witcher” and the Disney+ series “Moon Knight.”
“What I can say is that I absolutely appreciate and love the work that Beau gave the studio and the show and to the crew,” Castorena said. Calling this turn of events “bittersweet,” he said he hoped DeMayo’s departure wouldn’t overshadow the series itself.
“While, yes, this is big news, and while this has some sway for audiences, at the end of the day, the work is still the work,” he said. “The writing is still the writing, and the show is still the show.”

Winderbaum said that the second season was well on its way to completion and that a third season was currently in development. When asked if DeMayo’s departure would have any effect on the third season’s progress, he said that it’s “all still on track the same way.”
“Being Marvel — being a popular brand making stuff that hopefully people like — part of the cost of that is that the behind-the-scenes drama becomes a story as well,” he said. “All I can hope is that people are willing to just meet the show where it’s at.”
Frans de Waal, who used his study of the inner lives of animals to build a powerful case that apes think, feel, strategize, pass down culture and act on moral sentiments — and that humans are not quite as special as many of us like to think — died Thursday at his home in Stone Mountain, Georgia. He was 75.
The cause was stomach cancer, his wife, Catherine Marin, said.
A psychologist at Emory University in Atlanta and a research scientist at the school’s Yerkes National Primate Research Center, de Waal objected to the common usage of the word “instinct.” He saw the behavior of all sentient creatures, from crows to persons, existing on the same broad continuum of evolutionary adaptation.
“Uniquely human emotions don’t exist,” he argued in a 2019 New York Times guest essay. “Like organs, the emotions evolved over millions of years to serve essential functions.”
The ambition and clarity of his thought, his skills as a storyteller and his prolific output made him an exceptionally popular figure for a primatologist — or a serious scientist of any kind. Two of his books, “Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are?” (2016) and “Mama’s Last Hug: Animal Emotions and What They Tell Us About Ourselves” (2019), were bestsellers. In the mid-1990s, when he was speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich put de Waal’s first book, “Chimpanzee Politics” (1982), on a reading list for Republican House freshmen.
Novelists Claire Messud and Sigrid Nunez both told the Times that they liked his writing. Actress Isabella Rossellini hosted a talk with him in New York last year. Philosophers Christine Korsgaard and Peter Singer wrote long, considered responses to his ideas.
De Waal’s influence was such that the Times credited his work with unleashing “a torrent of discussion about animal sexuality” and helping to popularize the term “alpha male,” though neither of those accomplishments had much to do with the core of his thought.
His interest in what is shared across species, emotionally and morally, was kick-started in the mid-1970s, at the beginning of his career, when he saw one male chimpanzee raucously confront another, then calm down and extend his hand, palm up, in a peace offering, after which the apes embraced and groomed each other. After further research, he concluded that the episode showed a desire and ability to reconcile after fights.
He found further striking evidence that animals other than humans have empathy and a sense of fair play in the early 2000s, while working with psychologist Sarah Brosnan. The scholars designed an experiment in which two monkeys were awarded cucumbers for completing a task. Then one monkey was given a grape and the other was given a less tasty cucumber. The one that got the cucumber began refusing to cooperate, even hurling the vegetable back at the researcher. Some animals that got the better end of the deal declined their grape.
de Waal
Many of de Waal’s animal anecdotes were moving. He wrote about a bonobo named Kuni who once picked up an injured starling, climbed a tree, spread the bird’s wings and then released it, enabling it to fly. “She tailored her assistance to the specific situation of an animal totally different from herself,” de Waal wrote in his 2005 book, “Our Inner Ape: A Leading Primatologist Explains Why We Are Who We Are.”
These sorts of episodes indicated that primates had cognition, de Waal said. Other ape behaviors — young females getting maternal training, for example — indicated something even more impressive: that apes were capable of learning, remembering and passing down new skills across generations, meaning that different communities had their own cultures.
All this language was unusual among scientists, and some objected. Donna Haraway, a scholar not of primates but of primatologists, argued that de Waal tended to imagine a world in which “primates became model yuppies” — that he was, in other words, engaging in a kind of projection. A common argument against de Waal’s work was that he anthropo -

morphized nonhuman animals.
De Waal replied that the real problem was not anthropomorphism — apes and humans have many commonalities justifying comparison, with similar brains and psychological makeups — but instead a human exceptionalism that rejected even the possibility of humanlike behaviors in other animals, as well as animal-like traits in humans. He called this tendency “anthropodenial.”
For de Waal, his critics were missing out on good news: Morality turned out to be deeply rooted in our evolutionary past.
“I’d argue that biology constitutes our greatest hope,” he wrote in “The Age of Empathy: Nature’s Lessons for a Kinder Society” (2009). “One can only shudder at the thought that the humaneness of our societies would depend on the whims of politics, culture or religion.”
Franciscus Bernardus Maria de Waal was born on Oct. 29, 1948, in ’s-Hertogenbosch, a city in the southern Netherlands, and grew up in nearby Waalwijk. His father, Jo, was a banker, and his mother, Cis (van Dongen) de Waal, ran the home, raising six sons.
Frans kept pet fish as a child, and by his college years he had a kitten named Plexie, which he said he took on regular interspecies play dates with a puppy.
When he was 22, Frans attended the wedding of his brother Wim, who was close friends with a young Frenchwoman he had met after they were randomly assigned as pen pals in school. Upon meeting, Frans and the Frenchwoman, Marin, fell in love instantly. A year later, they moved in together.
During Frans’ early years in academia, a job studying macaques led him to develop a specialty in apes. He began working as a researcher of chimpanzees at Arnhem Zoo, in the east of the Netherlands, in 1975. He earned his doctorate in biology from Utrecht University in 1977.
He and Marin married in 1980 to make it easier for them to move to the United States as a couple. The next year, de Waal took a job at the Wisconsin Primate Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
He published 13 books, and at his death he was writing another, about how our thinking about animals has evolved over time. John Glusman, the vice president and executive editor of W.W. Norton & Co., de Waal’s publisher, said in an email that the company planned to release it next year.
Two years ago, Amy Gruenhut developed a near-fatal brain infection that put her into a coma for nearly two weeks. Since then, she has gone from learning how to eat, speak and walk again to running four marathons.
Gruenhut had been a casual runner before the coma, but after she left the hospital, returning to the jogging paths of Central Park felt like a return to life itself.
Making progress required patience and willpower that seemed almost superhuman. But, like everyone, Gruenhut sometimes struggled to get out of bed and lace up her sneakers. For those moments, she amassed a group of workout buddies to encourage her to get moving.
“I didn’t want to stand them up,” Gruenhut, 44, said, adding, “They were making that commitment to me as well.”
Regardless of how inspired people are to achieve their health and fitness goals, many face barriers to putting in the time, reps or steps. But experts say the difference between quitting and not quitting often comes down to having a person, group, app or other outside force that nudges you to keep going.
Most accountability tricks aren’t universal: One person might find it motivating to share run times on the fitness app Strava; another might find it deeply stressful. The key is to shop around until you find a strategy that works for you.

who struggled to work out saw significant improvement when they buddied up with a regular gym-goer, said Rachel Gershon, the study’s lead author and an assistant professor of marketing at the University of California, Berkeley. … or one who needs an extra push.
If you’re the more dedicated workout buddy, you can benefit from serving as a motivator and teacher for a lessexperienced friend, said Ayelet Fishbach, a professor of be-
Préstamos
havioral science at the University of Chicago.
When you give advice, you’re not only making yourself accountable to the other person, you’re also reinforcing your own commitment by hearing yourself articulate how or why you do something, she said.
Keep mostly mum about your races.
Deciding to train for a race or another athletic event can provide both structure and accountability, experts said. But you are probably best off keeping your plans relatively private.
Sharing a lofty goal widely — on social media, for example — can backfire because it can cause you to “feel like you already achieved it,” said Gabriele Oettingen, a professor of psychology at New York University. Research has suggested that, for some people, talking about an upcoming goal can feel like a substitute for actually doing it: You get the same satisfaction without putting in the hard work.
Hold off on hyping your event until you’re close to the finish line, she said, both literally and figuratively.
Promise an instructor you’ll show up.
While paying a monthly gym membership propels some people to work out, it’s not enough for others: Only half of gym members go twice a week.
“If you don’t follow through, there is no real penalty,” said Dr. Kevin Volpp, the director of the Penn Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics, other than feeling like you’ve wasted money.
To create more accountability, he said, forge a relationship with an instructor or trainer and say you’ll show up for a class or workout session at a specific time. Social accountability — not wanting to seem like a flake — can be a powerful motivator.
Use paper clips to track progress.
If you respond well to visual cues, Justin Ross, a clinical psychologist in Denver, recommends displaying a paperclip chain to track your workouts. Start with one clip, and every time you exercise, add a new one to the chain. Or make a rubber band ball.
When you’re feeling off, he said, these visual reminders “can help provide a little bit of that energy to get you started.”
Get paid.
If you need an extra incentive, sign up for an app that pays or rewards you for moving, said Heather Royer, a health economist at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
These apps track metrics such as minutes or miles through your phone or wearable fitness device, and offer discounts on products or even charitable donations in your name. They’re typically funded by corporate sponsors or commissions from partner brands.
Royer prefers Paceline, which offers gift cards and discounts for moving 150 minutes a week. Even though the payout itself is small — only around a dollar or two a week — it’s motivating for her.
“It’s enough that, come the end of the week, if I’m not yet at that goal, I’m doing workouts at 10 p.m.,” she said.

Before Game 2 of the 2023 American League Championship Series, Michael Brantley took swings on the field with the rest of the Houston Astros. His father, former major leaguer Mickey Brantley, watched from the stands. At one point, the son stepped back from the cage and looked into the seats. His father motioned to him that he was drifting, and told him to turn more aggressively.
“He’s not only my father — he’s been a pro hitting coach and he’s played,” Brantley said after the game. “He knows my swing better than anybody.”
But in that moment by the cage, two hitting coaches were also on hand, as well as a quality assurance coach and a game-planning coach. One personnel roster for the Astros listed 14 major league coaches in 2023: They were 14 potential sources of inspiration, but also 14 different personalities that a player like Brantley could interact with on game day. The San Francisco Giants had 15 coaches, by one count. In 2014, the last time San Francisco won the World Series, it had eight coaches, including manager Bruce Bochy.
coach, a dietitian, two strength coaches, two trainers, two hitting coaches, two pitching coaches, two advance scouts and even a manager of minor league advance scouting.
Changes in staffing at the major league level are being met with similar ones on the minor league level, as teams make an effort to ensure that players are used to the game-planning process throughout their development. One executive rattled off all of the staff members the team had in Class AAA as it tried to replicate the major league process: a manager, a bench
Coaches upon coaches upon coaches, and that does not include the offseason, which is full of fathers and outside trainers with their own opinions about how the player should try to improve.
This explosion in coaching has led to a cacophony in the modern player’s head.
“No matter what, someone’s talking to you, no matter where you go — social media, the ballpark, the training fields — everyone has the thing they want to communicate to you,” said the Giants’ two-way prospect Reggie Crawford, who as a pitcher and hitter has twice as many coaches to deal with than the average player. “You have to figure out what you want to put your time and energy into. There are a lot of voices.”
For veterans, the solution can be simple: Be your own coach (or be the CEO of all the coaches you employ).
“This year is the first year I’m my own hitting coach,” Cleveland Guardians outfielder Ramón Laureano said about his offseason, in which he bought weighted bats and devised a routine. “It takes time,
it can take seven, eight years, to be really good and really bad and know yourself enough to be your own coach.”
But there’s still a trick to it. You have to not only be ready to hear new things, but also retain some cynicism about the things you might hear.
“It’s always good to improve; I’m always open to new ideas,” San Diego Padres infielder Xander Bogaerts said. “If they say something, I don’t have to do it necessarily, but if it is something that might help, I’d like to hear about it.”
Veterans have the money and gravitas to hire their own coaches and follow their own plans. It can be tougher for a player coming through a minor league system, talking to coach after coach at every level. What happens when he runs into a coach telling him something that does not seem right for his game?
“Guys can fall victim to that when they’re younger because they are peoplepleasing and trying to be coachable,” Seattle Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger said.
So, how do you not listen to your coaches and also not be labeled “uncoachable”? Players have an answer for this one.
“Create real personal relationships
so there’s something other than baseball to talk about,” said a minor leaguer who did not think his current coaches could help him. “With the old guys, especially, just getting them to tell their glory day stories. Feeds their egos and keeps me in good spirits. If you come with a thought-out plan and show effort, they usually don’t say anything.”
Giving players the keys to their future is also good for the organization and the outside coach, even when they come into conflict.
“If you can prove what you’re saying to the player and the team says no, the player is going to come back and say, ‘Can you provide me the information to show it to the team?’” said Driveline Baseball’s director of pitching, Chris Langin. “But if you can’t get the player to commit, they won’t show it to the team. You try to empower the player, by telling them what you think they should do and providing evidence.”
If the player cares enough, just having that intention to gather information will almost always be a good thing for his career. Even for a veteran such as Shane Bieber, who tried new voices this offseason and was surprised to hear (from Langin) that his curveball grip had somehow changed over the year, without the pitcher noticing.
“It was unintentional; it was amazing, but it was also a relief,” Bieber said.
As a player, the trick is to assimilate all that new knowledge into what you already knew, take the good, not the irrelevant, and do so while not irritating the coaches around you (especially if you are a prospect). And for the front office executive, the plan is to create an environment where all of this is encouraged, and the player can learn and be open and honest — but also somehow ends up with the coaching you want for them, from the mouth of one of your organization’s hundreds of coaches.
Simple? Doesn’t sound like it, but somehow it has to feel that way.
Xander Bogaerts of the Boston Red Sox hits a single in the fifth inning in Game 1 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, at Fenway Park in Boston, Oct. 23, 2018. Bogaerts, now with the San Diego Padres, says he always appreciates input from coaches, but the 12th-year veteran decides for himself what to do with the advice. (Chang W. Lee/The New York Times)
