Primary candidates for governor close their campaigns with events around the island

As most primary campaigns wrapped up at various sites around the island on Sunday, Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia’s campaign director, Edwin Mundo Ríos, gave assurances that the New Progressive Party (NPP) has a team of lawyers ready to defend the party on June 2, when eligible voters will select their preferred candidate to represent the NPP in the election race for governor.

“We attach great importance to our electoral component, and that is why we are trying to have a team of lawyers who support our electoral commissioners and [polling station] officials,” Mundo said early in the day. “This group is trained and ready for the fight we face in eight days and the one we will face in November.”

Sunday was Pierluisi’s campaign closing. His opponent, Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón, did not have a campaign closing and instead took her On the Street tour to Bayamón with Mayor Ramón Luis Rivera Cruz.

During a press briefing following a training session with Pierluisi’s legal team, Ferdinand Ocasio, a lawyer who is the team leader for the primary, highlighted the team’s comprehensive coverage. He said the team has representatives for all electoral precincts, votes in prisons, and for every step of the process before and after the primary. He further emphasized that the team comprises more than 125 lawyers, ensuring a robust defense of the party’s votes.

“Our governor’s legal team, many of whom have been involved in the processes since the 2016 primary, continues

to grow and adapt,” Ocasio said, highlighting the team’s commitment to maintaining a strong legal defense. “We are fortunate to have new colleagues joining us, ready to step in for those who, due to vacation or professional commitments, cannot participate in this particular event. We are confident that on June 3, the team will be even stronger when those from the other campaign join us.”

Meanwhile, at Pierluisi’s campaign closing at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Hato Rey, Rep. Jorge Navarro urged followers to attend the event, which was full of white tarps with food and water. Supporters were dressed in blue and white. Former Gov. Pedro Rosselló attended the event, which began at 2 p.m.

“This is not a campaign closing but a shakeup,” Navarro said.

The campaign featured Joseph Fonseca, Limi-T 21 and Algarete.

It has been 20 years since Río Grande has had an NPP mayor, and this time around Pablo Ramos, the pro-statehood party’s candidate, hopes to win. Ramos said the work that has been done in the city, has taken place because of Pierluisi. Officials in Loíza also said the work that has been done in that municipality has been driven by Pierluisi’s work. Luis de Jesús, the NPP candidate for a district seat in the House of Representatives that covers Río Grande, Loíza and Canóvanas, urged people to give the NPP the legislative majority and the same in the towns.

“Pierluisi is the governor we deserve and has brought progress,” he said. “The governor is the only candidate.”

On the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) side, gubernatorial candidate Rep. Jesús Manuel Ortiz González held his campaign closing in Carolina, along with resident commissioner hopeful Pablo José Hernández and other top PDP leaders after caravans that took them to Río Grande, Luquillo and Loíza.

Ortiz González’s primary rival, Sen. Juan Zaragoza Gómez, held his campaign closing in Aguadilla with the support of Mayor Julio Roldán. Senate President José Luis Dalmau Santiago was present. Zaragoza Gómez reaffirmed his conviction that he is the only figure, not only with the administrative capacity to lead the island government, but also to defeat the NPP in the general elections.

“I am convinced that God has given me the tools, in addition to the courage, which I demonstrated during my years in front of the Department of the Treasury,” said the candidate.

Landslide sends 15 refugees to shelter in Guánica

Ramos said Sunday that the municipality is housing 15 refugees in the María Luisa McDougall School due to the instability of the terrain near a landslide that occurred in the community of Alturas de Bélgica.

“This situation has taken us all by surprise and we activated all available resources to assist the affected families,” the mayor said in a written statement. “We are grateful for the assistance of the director of the Emergency Management Bureau, Nino Correa Filomeno, as well as [La Fortaleza] Chief of Staff Noelia García, who has been in communication with us. The secretary of the Department of Housing is scheduled to visit on Tuesday, as we are looking at the options available to these refugees.”

The situation originated about four days ago, but cracks in the road and terrain, particularly on Calle Las Rosas, have been worsening, a situation that is attributed to the rainfall events of the past few days.

Also on Sunday, Public Safety Secretary Alexis Torres Ríos and Bureau of Emergency Management and Disaster Administration Commissioner Nino Correa Filomeno, along with personnel from Guánica’s Municipal Office of Emergency Management, visited the impacted community to follow up on the work plan after the landslide.

The southwestern coastal town’s emergency management office is waiting for the results of the geological studies conducted by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources and personnel from the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority.

Elba Cabrera, patron of Puerto Rican culture in New York, dies at 90

Elba Cabrera, a beloved godmother of the Puerto Rican cultural diaspora in New York City and the last survivor of Las Tres Hermanas, three sisters who galvanized educational, social and arts programs in their community, died May 10 in the Bronx. She was 90.

Her death, in a hospital, was confirmed by her son Paul Mondesire.

Migrating to East Harlem from Puerto Rico with her mother before she was 2, Cabrera was trained in high school as a secretary and bookkeeper. After graduation, through the retail workers union, she had jobs selling hosiery and shoes.

Hailing from a family steeped in public service, she earned a college degree in her 40s and emerged as a patron of the arts, helping to identify and nurture talented musicians, artists, photographers, sculptors, poets and writers.

“Elba opened the doors of opportunity to hundreds of artists, particularly Puerto Rican and Latino ones, through her institutional roles or through her personal networks,” said Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, the chancellor of the City University of New York and former president of Hostos Community College in the Bronx.

“In a world full of bitter rivalries and con-

flicting egos,” he added, “Elba provided a unifying voice and trusted ally that brought people together and got things done.”

The Puerto Rican Traveling Theater was among her beneficiaries. Its artistic director, Rosalba Rolon, recalled in an email: “Elba had a great eye for identifying the potential in many of us, to connect with our vision. On many occasions, she offered the key, literally, to her office so we could make copies of scripts, move chairs around and rehearse. She went beyond the call of duty. It is not always about money, which she offered often, but about helping to kick that door open.”

Her institutional roles and personal networks were manifold.

After graduating from SUNY Old Westbury on Long Island with a degree in political science in 1978, she was hired as associate director of the Association of Hispanic Artists, which promoted marginalized Latino artists through events, a newsletter, a directory and a weekly program on WNYC-TV.

After 1987, she became marketing director for the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx and the Hostos Community College Center for the Arts and Gallery; director of Hispanic affairs at the Center for the Media Arts in Manhattan; a consultant on membership with the Girl Scouts; and part of an Alzheimer’s

outreach team for the New York City Department of the Aging.

Maria Elba Cabrera was born Sept. 10, 1933, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, to Sixto Cabrera and Eva Cruz Lopez, a widow with two daughters. One of the sisters left for New York to live with an aunt on the day Elba was born.

The sisters reunited in New York in 1935.

Cabrera’s mother worked in a hotel laundry and became involved with the Socialist Party.

The family lived with their aunt, who worked in Mayor Fiorello La Guardia’s campaign. Their uncle was a dance promoter and welcomed many musicians to his home.

Cabrera’s sisters joined the Young Communist League. The eldest, Evelina López Antonetty, founded United Bronx Parents, a nonprofit that provides services for South Bronx residents, in 1965; she died in 1984. The middle sister, Lillian López, was among the first Puerto Rican public librarians in New York City and introduced Spanish language books into the library system. She died in 2005.

After graduating from Bronx Vocational High School (later Grace Dodge Career and Technical Education High School) in 1951, Cabrera met Anthony Mondesire at the Palladium Ballroom, in Manhattan’s theater district; they married in 1954. Mondesire died in 1996.

In addition to their son Paul, she is survived by another son, Tony Mondesire-Cabrera, and two granddaughters.

While working with United Bronx Parents from 1966 to 1978,Cabrera proofread for filmmaker Amílcar Tirado, who was teaching at SUNY Old Westbury and encouraged her to enroll.

“She followed in the family tradition of service in the pursuit of better educational opportunities and social justice, while setting herself apart with her focused appreciation of the arts as a tool for the pursuit of happiness on every level,” Paul Cabrera said in an email. “And she did not believe in the notion that artists must starve.”

In 2015, when she was 81, Cabrera lamented the deaths of several Hispanic cultural figures who had made their reputations in the 1960s, linking Puerto Ricans in New York to their island roots while also creating new forms of expression. Among them were poets Tato Laviera and Jack Agüeros and photographer Frank Espada.

“My world is getting smaller because we’re losing so many people we admired, who were artists, activists and part of the growth of this city,” Cabrera told The New York Times. “I guess we were blessed to even know them. They had a vision of the world, and they also did it through their art. And that is their legacy. Not many of us can say that.”

New York-based PR diaspora group prepares for trip to island

Noviembre, based in New York City, confirmed over the weekend that it is preparing to make its annual trip to Puerto Rico, in a cultural, educational and volunteer service meeting in Puerto Rico called “Buscando Nuestras Raíces.”

“In the last 18 years, our organization Comité Noviembre has managed to get nearly 800 volunteers to contribute their services in this project that combines a cultural meeting, educational workshops and volunteer service works,” said Teresa A. Santiago, co-founder and president of Comité Noviembre, a nonprofit organization which in its 38 years has paid tribute to the contributions Puerto Ricans have made to the world. “Our goal has been to focus on supporting and investing in Puerto

Rico’s economy and providing support to nonprofit organizations that directly serve the community in need. During all these years, the organization has implemented a series of workshops, conferences, discussions, concerts and social justice interventions.”

Santiago, a prominent community leader in New York, said many members of the diaspora, in joining the effort of the November Committee, have taken on an active role in projects in agriculture, micro-enterprises and self-sustainable programs that allow people to help in the development of an economy based on the needs and claims of their people on the island.

The November Committee has implemented a scholarship program for young people of Puerto Rican descent, and continues to hold forums and open workshops to discuss critical issues that affect the Puerto

His first solo production, entitled “Ilevitable” (2016), won a Grammy the following year in the category Best Rock, Urban or Alternative Album. She was also nominated for a Latin Grammy for Best New Artist.

Last year, Mayor Cortés Feliciano announced that Pico de Piedra underwent

renovations to be in shape for public use at the start of this summer season.

“We have complied with this project, which had an investment of $613,000 and consists of important improvements, from the removal and installation of tiles and wood siding and trim, painting in all facilities, to the installation of new lighting in the parking lot, among others,” Cortés Feliciano said. “They are first-class facilities, as the people of Aguadeño and visitors deserve.”

The Night of San Juan, also known as the Eve of San Juan, is the celebration that takes place annually on the eve of the Christian feast of the birth of San Juan Bautista, after whom

the capital of Puerto Rico is named, on June 24. He is the only saint in Catholicism who is not commemorated by the Catholic Church on the day of his death. Instead he is annually commemorated on the day of his birth, six months before Jesus Christ.

Traditionally, families and groups of friends come to the spas to cool off from the summer heat. In the second workshop, the legal perspective and conceptual framework on the deed of trusts and the taxes applicable in Puerto Rico to inheritances, donations and trusts will be offered. Knowing how the income from trusts is taxed in Puerto Rico and recognizing those trusts whose income is taxable by the trustors or creators of the trust will be among the aspects covered.

Sotomayor describes frustration with being a liberal on the Supreme Court

Some days, after Justice Sonia Sotomayor listens to the Supreme Court announce its decisions, she goes into her chambers, shuts the door and weeps.

“There are days that I’ve come to my office after an announcement of a case and closed my door and cried,” Sotomayor told a crowd Friday at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University, where she was being honored. “There have been those days. And there are likely to be more.”

The comments about the challenges of being a liberal on a court dominated by conservatives came at the tail end of a public conversation with her friend and law school classmate, Martha Minow, a former dean of Harvard Law School and human rights scholar.

The justice set a tone of optimism even as she voiced frustration with some of the court’s rulings, a possible signal that the end of the term, when the most high-profile decisions typically land, could bring more conservative victories. She urged a long-term view of pushing for the values she views as guiding principles — equality, diversity and justice.

“There are moments when I’m deeply, deeply sad,” she said, without citing any specific cases. “There are moments when, yes, even I feel desperation. We all do. But you have to own it, you have to accept it, you have to shed the tears, and then you have to wipe them and get up.”

Decisions in dozens of cases are still pending, including on abortion, guns, the free speech rights of social media companies, the regulatory power of government agencies and whether former President Donald Trump is immune from prosecution on charges of plotting to overturn the 2020 election.

On a sunny spring day, hundreds gathered under an outdoor tent to hear Sotomayor, including young children carrying Puerto Rican flags, a nod to her roots. The justice, whose parents are Puerto Rican, is the first Latina to serve on the Supreme Court.

The justice said that she had first planned on a career as a detective, prompted not by her interactions with law enforcement in the public housing that formed her world as a child in the Bronx but because of fictional girl detective Nancy Drew.

“I think Nancy Drew became sort of a role model,” Sotomayor said.

That led to a fascination with helping

others, seeking justice and, eventually, a more sophisticated understanding of the legal system and the power of judges. That came into sharper focus as she watched Southern lower court judges defy cultural norms to uphold the landmark decision Brown v. Board of Education, in which the Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in public schools violated the Constitution.

“They were brave men who believed in the power of law to form that more perfect union, and I believe it,” she said.

She spoke with great warmth about her mother, who raised her as a single parent after Sotomayor’s father died when she was 9. She said her mother initially wanted her to become

a journalist, to travel and interview people. As a young girl, the justice recalled, her mother was unable to afford books or newspapers, leaving her to pluck papers from trash cans, eager to understand more of the world.

As a high school student, Sotomayor said, she watched her mother return to school to become a registered nurse, a move that showed great determination.

“If I’m half the woman my mother was, then I’m satisfied, because she was amazing,” Sotomayor said.

She also credited a series of mentors with helping her find her way as she rose from a young lawyer to a district judge, moving to the appeals court and finally the Supreme Court.

When she was asked to join the Supreme Court, she said, she hesitated because her mother had been diagnosed with memory loss, and she worried about whether she would have enough time to spend with her.

Her mother’s reaction was swift and clear: “She stopped me, and she said, ‘Don’t you dare not do this because of me. You would take away the dream I spent my life building for you. I wanted you to be the very best you can.’”

In her years on the court, she said, she has focused on trying to mentor, encourage and inspire young people, from small children in Head Start programs on up.

“If I say one thing to any child in this room, and I consider you a child if you’re younger than 20, by the way,” she said. “But if one of you remembers something I said that inspired you to do something different or inspires you to become more active in making the world a better place, then my legacy will last much longer than I will, because I will have departed this world and really left an important legacy.”

Uvalde families accuse Instagram, Call of Duty and rifle maker of ‘grooming’ gunman

The families of schoolchildren who were shot at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in 2022 filed two lawsuits late last week accusing Instagram, the publisher of the popular Call of Duty video game and a manufacturer of semiautomatic rifles of helping to train and equip the teenage gunman who committed the massacre.

The unusual lawsuits were filed on the second anniversary of the elementary school shooting, in which 19 fourth graders and two teachers were killed in their classrooms by an 18-year-old gunman who had purchased his weapon — an AR-15-style rifle — a few days before, as soon as he was legally able.

While much of the attention in the aftermath of the shooting has been on the flawed police response, the two suits — one filed in California, the other in Texas — focus on the gunman and the companies that he regularly interacted with leading up to the shooting. Each company, the lawsuits claim, took part in “grooming” the teenager to become a mass shooter.

Together, the suits are among the most far-reaching actions to be filed in response to the escalating number of mass shootings in the United States. The California suit, which names the publisher Activision, appeared to be one of the first to go after a video game maker for helping to promote weapons used in mass shootings.

The lawsuits argue that the gunmaker, Daniel Defense, would not have been able to connect with the gunman, a socially isolated teenager living in rural Texas, without the help of the technology and video game companies.

A spokesperson for Activision said in a statement Friday that “we express our deepest sympathies to the families” in Uvalde, but added that “millions of people around the world enjoy video games without turning to horrific acts.” The other companies did not immediately comment.

The Uvalde families are represented by Josh Koskoff, a lawyer who has previously challenged gunmakers over mass shootings. In 2022,

Koskoff reached a $73 million settlement with Remington, the maker of another AR-15-style rifle that was used in the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting that left 26 people dead in Connecticut in 2012.

The new cases must clear significant hurdles. There is a section of federal law known as Section 230 that has largely insulated online platforms from lawsuits over content posted by others. And a 2005 federal law grants gunmakers broad protection from liability for shootings.

Koskoff made use of exceptions in the 2005 law for the Sandy Hook lawsuit. That suit, like the new ones on behalf of the Uvalde families, focused on the marketing of the weapons.

Makers of violent video games have survived previous efforts to link them to real-world violence based on the graphic content of their games. The suits filed Friday focus instead on violent first-person shooter games as a form of advertising for the weapons they depict.

Documents surfaced during the Sandy Hook case showing that there were licensing agreements between Remington and Activision, the maker behind the realistically violent Call of Duty franchise.

The marketing potential for real-world weapons in Call of Duty also figures in a suit brought in 2022 by victims of a mass shooting at a parade in Highland Park, Illinois. The gunman in that case was an avid player of the game, according to that lawsuit, although Activision was not named as a defendant.

The Uvalde families are suing Activision and Instagram, as well as their parent companies Microsoft and Meta, in California because that was where the alleged conduct took place, their lawyers said.

According to the suit, the Uvalde gunman spent significant time playing Call of Duty, including a recent version of the game that prominently featured the rifle model sold by Daniel Defense that the gunman used.

The suit argues that the game allows players to try out realistic simulations of recognizable real-world firearms, making Activision “the most prolific and effective marketer of assault weapons in the United States.” Instagram allowed Daniel Defense to promote its products through its social media presence even though the platform formally bans firearms advertising.

“Refuse to be a victim,” one of the gun company’s Instagram posts read, with an image of a person taking an assault-style rifle out of the trunk of a car.

Meta allows firearms makers to bypass its advertising prohibitions and market directly to children, the suit argues, through “organic”

content and social media influencers.

Koskoff, along with another lawyer, Erin Rogiers, is representing most of the families of the children who were killed or wounded in the Uvalde massacre. They filed suit in Texas against Daniel Defense, which sold the gunman his rifle online and shipped it by mail, and against the gun store in Uvalde, Oasis Outback, where the gunman picked up the rifle and bought a second gun as well.

The suit accuses Daniel Defense of violating Texas law by offering to sell the gunman a weapon before he was 18.

The filings point to an email sent to the gunman, Salvador Ramos, after he had placed the rifle he wanted, a DDM4v7, in an online “cart” on the Daniel Defense website but had yet to purchase it. He was 17 at the time.

“Hi Salvador, are you on the fence?” the company’s email read, according to the Texas suit. “Your DDM4v7 is ready in your cart!”

Daniel Defense, a family-owned business based in Georgia, has a history of provocative advertising and has been successful with a directto-consumer model for ordering military gear online with a few clicks. A small player in the booming U.S. market for AR-15-style rifles, the company promotes the quality of its weapons, which are significantly more expensive than others on the market.

According to the court filings, the company also aggressively sought to connect with new customers through social media and Call of Duty.

In November 2021, the gunman in Uvalde downloaded a version of the video game, titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, that featured the DDM4v7 on its opening title page, according to the California suit.

“Within a week of downloading Modern Warfare on Nov. 5, 2021, the shooter’s phone indicates a growing obsession with weapons and accessories associated with the game,” the suit says.

The lawsuit does not make clear how the plaintiffs gained access to information stored on the gunman’s phone. But the filings make use of that information, particularly for what they describe as the gunman’s search history and Instagram usage.

By December 2021, the gunman was looking into Daniel Defense guns, researching the specific model he would use in the massacre, and saving his money to purchase it, according to the suit. At the time, he was using Instagram habitually, often in the middle of the night. According to the filings, he bought the rifle May 16, 2022 — 23 minutes after midnight on his 18th birthday.

$2 billion residential development planned for Cabo Rojo

The billionaire Reuben brothers and Three Rules Capital have filed a master plan for a more than $2 billion development in Cabo Rojo that will have its own private airport and views of the Caribbean Sea.

According to its web page, the project, called Esencia, is a residential and hospitality community that will occupy some 2,000 acres of pristine land. Puerto Rico has become a popular spot for wealthy mainlanders — particularly bond traders, financiers and the crypto wealthy — as it provides some of the most lucrative tax breaks in the hemisphere, noted a report from Bloomberg.

The project will include luxury hotel rooms and branded residences at a site on the island’s west coast, according to a statement issued last week. The development will be anchored by hotel operators including the Aman Group, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group and Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. Meanwhile, the developers are working with JPMorgan Chase & Co. as the lead bank for financing.

“Puerto Rico, and its west coast specifically, is a beautiful and vibrant place and one of the most promising growth markets in the world,” Jamie Reuben, a principal at Reuben Brothers, said in the statement. “We saw an opportunity to make a transformative investment while creating thousands of jobs.”

The site includes more than 2,000 acres (809 hectares) of land, and will feature two golf courses, an equestrian center and a bilingual K-12 school. The plan will be implemented in five phases, with the first expected to be completed three years after starting construction.

Billionaires Simon and David Reuben’s real estate investment company owns properties around the world, including Los Angeles’ Century Plaza and Admiralty Arch in London. The Reuben brothers have a combined net worth of about $15.6 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The new Esencia project will limit structures to 23% of the land or less.

The Esencia development is expected to have up to 900 branded residences.

Stocks rebound to close higher but Dow down for the week

U.S. stocks rebounded on Friday from sharp losses the day before on news of an improving consumer outlook on inflation, sending the Nasdaq to a fifth straight week of gains and record closing high.

The Commerce Department said new orders for key U.S.-manufactured capital goods rebounded more than expected in April while the University of Michigan reported that consumers’ inflation expectations improved in late May after deteriorating early in the month.

“The data has come in a little better than people thought this morning. Durable goods was a pretty solid number. ... And then consumer sentiment, not great, but not bad, better than people expected,” said Rob Haworth, senior investment strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management in Seattle.

“This is a bounce where people are like maybe things aren’t as bad as we thought, maybe there’s room for the Fed to cut rates and the economy’s going to be OK, and we’re not completely falling apart.”

Trading volumes were subdued ahead of the Memorial Day market holiday on Monday.

Optimistic about the war in Ukraine, Putin unleashes a purge at home

Periodic outcries over incompetence and corruption at the top of the Russian military have dogged President Vladimir Putin’s war effort since the start of his invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

When his forces faltered around the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, the need for change was laid bare. When they were routed months later outside the city of Kharkiv, expectations of a shake-up grew. And after mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin marched his men toward Moscow, complaining of deep rot and ineptitude at the top of the Russian force, Putin seemed obliged to respond.

But, at each turn, the Russian president avoided any major public moves that could have been seen as validating the criticism, keeping his defense minister and top general in place through the firestorm while shuffling battlefield commanders and making other moves lower on the chain.

Now, with the battlefield crises seemingly behind him and Prigozhin dead, the Russian leader has decided to act, changing defense ministers for the first time in more than a decade and allowing a number of corruption arrests among top ministry officials.

The moves have ushered in the biggest overhaul at the Russian Defense Ministry since the invasion began and have confirmed Putin’s preference for avoiding big, responsive changes in the heat of a crisis and instead acting at a less conspicuous time of his own choosing.

“We have to understand that Putin is a person who is stubborn and not very flexible,” said Abbas Gallyamov, a former Putin speechwriter who now lives outside Russia. “He believes that reacting too quickly and rapidly to a changing situation is a sign of weakness.”

The timing of Putin’s recent moves is most likely a sign that he has greater confidence about his battlefield prospects in Ukraine and his hold on political power as he begins his fifth term as president, experts say.

Russian forces are making gains in Ukraine, taking territory around Kharkiv and in the Donbas region, as Ukraine struggles with aid delays from the United States and strained reserves of ammunition and personnel. Top officials in the Kremlin are feeling optimistic.

“They likely judge the situation within the force as stable enough to punish some in the military leadership for its prior failures,”

said Michael Kofman, an expert on the Russian military and a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Demand for change at the top of the Russian military has been pent up since the invasion’s earliest days, when stories circulated about Russian soldiers going to war without proper food and equipment and losing their lives while answering to feckless military leaders.

The anger crested with an aborted uprising led last year by Prigozhin, who died in a subsequent plane crash that U.S. officials have said was most likely a state-sanctioned assassination.

Prigozhin, a caterer turned warlord who grew rich on state contracts, was an unlikely messenger. But he put high-level corruption on the minds of Russia’s rank and file and the public more broadly, releasing profanitylaced tirades against Sergei Shoigu, then the defense minister, and Russia’s top uniformed officer, Gen. Valery Gerasimov. At one point, Prigozhin filmed himself in front of a pile of dead Russian fighters and denounced top officials for “rolling in fat” in their wood-paneled offices.

His subsequent failed mutiny showed that the problems festering in the Defense Ministry under Shoigu for more than a decade had boiled over and that the populace craved renewal, said a person close to the ministry who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss sensitive topics.

The Russian leader now appears to be moving against the very officials that Prigozhin had been attacking.

The first harbinger of change arose last month with the arrest of Timur Ivanov, a protege of Shoigu and the deputy defense minister in charge of military construction projects whom Russian authorities have accused of taking a large bribe. He has denied wrongdoing. Ivanov previously attracted the attention of Alexei Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation for his and his wife’s conspicuously lavish lifestyle, including yacht rentals on the French Riviera.

Then, this month, days after Putin began his new term as president, the Kremlin announced that he had replaced Shoigu and chosen Andrei Belousov, one of his longtime economic advisers, as the new defense minister. Shoigu was moved to run the Russian Security Council, where he would still have access to the president but would have little direct con-

trol over money.

Belousov has no military experience. But he boasts a relatively clean image and a long government career untainted by large corruption scandals.

“If you want to win a war, corruption at a larger scale impacting the results on the battlefield is, in theory at least, not something you want,” said Maria Engqvist, the deputy head of Russia and Eurasia studies at the Swedish Defense Research Agency.

Still, Engqvist called high-level corruption in Russia “a feature, not a bug.”

“Corruption is a tool to gain influence, but it can also be used against you at any given time, depending on whether you say the wrong thing at the wrong time or make the wrong decision at the wrong time,” she said. “So you can be ousted with a reasonable explanation that the public can accept.”

Engqvist said the changes also raised questions about how long Gerasimov would stay in his position as chief of the general staff and top battlefield commander in Ukraine.

The arrests at the Defense Ministry have gathered pace this month, with four more top generals and defense officials detained on corruption charges. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin

spokesperson, denied Thursday that the arrests represented a “campaign.”

The corruption charges against top Defense Ministry officials have come alongside promises of greater financial and social benefits for the rank-and-file soldiers, an apparent attempt to improve morale and mollify populist critics.

Belousov used his first remarks after his nomination as defense minister to describe his plans to cut bureaucracy and improve access to health care and other social services for veterans of the war. And on Thursday, the speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament, Vyacheslav Volodin, and Finance Minister Anton Siluanov expressed support for exempting fighters in Ukraine from proposed income-tax increases.

The high-level arrests are unlikely to root out vast corruption in the Russian military establishment, but they could make top officials think twice before stealing at a particularly large scale, at least for a period, said Dara Massicot, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

“It will introduce a chill into the system and make everyone pause as they try to figure out the new code of accepted behavior,” Massicot said.

Why do aid groups stay in lawless Haiti?

Haiti’s bleak humanitarian situation is once again in the spotlight after gangs on Thursday attacked an Oklahoma-based missionary group working in the capital, Port-au-Prince, killing two Americans and the Haitian director of the organization, Missions in Haiti.

The attack left many asking why American missionaries are still working in Haiti considering the immense violence that has paralyzed the country and the grip gangs have over most of Port-au-Prince. Thursday’s incident follows the 2021 kidnapping of 17 missionaries who were working in Haiti with Christian Aid Ministries. A Haitian gang kidnapped 16 Americans and a Canadian in that attack; weeks later, 12 of the hostages escaped and the others were freed.

While Haiti is no stranger to violence and instability, the situation has worsened considerably since the 2021 assassination of the country’s president, Jovenel Moïse. Since then, the state has collapsed and gangs have proliferated, filling the vacuum.

The killings this past week come as Kenyan-led forces are set to arrive in Haiti in the next few weeks to confront the gangs and help stabilize the country. They are being funded by the United States and other members of the international community.

The gangs now control much of the capital, including vital infrastructure, like national highways and seaports. They are able to hold up imports of basic food items and other necessities for a country that produces very little and relies heavily on foreign goods.

What is the current humanitarian situation?

Gangs now control or can exert their influence over about 90% of the capital, according to research groups. In many respects, Port-au-Prince is a giant, open-air prison, with much of the population of 6 million unable to move freely, gang violence dictating their everyday lives.

From March 1 to May 20, gang-related violence has killed 1,160 people across Haiti, including 136 women and 35 children, according to the latest figures from the United Nations. There were also 294 kidnappings, including six children, in that time.

More than 160,000 people are currently displaced in the capital’s metropolitan area, according to the International Organization for Migration, or IOM.

The organization reported in March that 15,000 Haitians were displaced within a single week, many of whom were previously displaced from earlier gang violence. The IOM counted 10 displacement sites that were entirely emptied during a period of a few weeks, from February to March, by people fleeing “successive waves of violence,” according to a statement from the organization.

About 59% of the country lives below the poverty line and nearly 1 in 4 children suffer from chronic malnutrition, according to UNICEF.

What is the history of aid groups?

Aid groups have been active in Haiti for decades, but their presence ramped up after a devastating 2010 ear-

thquake that leveled entire parts of the capital and killed some 300,000 people.

Since that earthquake, the international community has pumped roughly $13 billion into Haiti. But instead of helping the country get back on its feet, Haitian institutions have weakened, contributing to the current collapse of the state, according to some experts.

“Individual aid projects can be fine and offer help, but they are still part of a broader system that has undermined the state, reduced capacity and has partially led to the current situation that is unfolding,” said Jake Johnston, a Haiti expert at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a think tank, and the author of the book “Aid State: Elite Panic, Disaster Capitalism, and the Battle to Control Haiti.”

When the earthquake struck in 2010, nearly half of all American families donated to Haitian relief efforts, according to the head of the U.S. Agency for International Development at the time, Rajiv J. Shah. Wyclef Jean, a famous Haitian-born musician, ran a massive donation drive, collecting some $16 million, but was accused of squandering much of it.

When U.N. peacekeepers deployed in Port-au-Prince from 2004 to 2017, they were accused of fathering hundreds of children, then abandoning them and their Haitian mothers. Other peacekeepers were accused of running a child sex ring. The U.N. peacekeeping mission was also responsible for sparking a deadly cholera outbreak that killed at least 10,000 people and sickened hundreds of thousands.

While Haiti is teeming with aid organizations, the wide presence of Christian aid groups in the country — often managed by missionaries — has been among the most controversial.

What is the controversy around missionary groups in Haiti?

Although missionary groups in Haiti have launched some successful projects to feed, clothe and educate the population, particularly children, they are often viewed by Haitians with extreme mistrust.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, some missionaries were caught running orphanages that were accused of trafficking children illegally. Ten missionaries were jailed for trying to take 33 children to the United States without documentation.

The customary practice of many mission groups to send in outside volunteers — often from the United States — has opened them to criticism. Critics claim these groups leave Haitians entirely reliant on foreign help, doled out by Americans, in a patronlike arrangement that only perpetuates the country’s poverty by failing to build up local capacity.

How dangerous is the country for aid organizations?

Very.

In some other places, armed groups are often ideologically driven and tolerate or assist aid groups in their efforts to help the population. Instead, the gangs in Haiti exist to enrich or gratify themselves by preying on civilians

— through extortion or rape, for example.

Gangs used to have somewhat more of moral code, allowing aid workers to carry out their work largely undisturbed. But that changed in 2021, when the state collapsed.

“Ten years ago, if you were an aid worker, Haitian or foreign, or a missionary, people would largely respect you,” said Pierre Espérance, the executive director of the National Human Rights Defense Network, a Port-au-Prince organization. “Now, the gangs don’t have respect for any institution in Haiti, not just aid groups.”

Over the last three years, gangs have attacked and occupied aid distribution centers, schools and hospitals. In a few instances, schoolchildren have run fundraising drives to pay for their classmates’ ransoms.

But the gangs’ grip on seaports has complicated aid efforts as well. Gangs control not only some of Haiti’s most important docks, but also the roads leading in and out of the capital’s seaports. That has held up the delivery of fuel, crippling the entire country and frequently leaving aid groups unable to distribute vital supplies of essentials like food and medicine.

That has led to rampant inflation across Haiti. The price of basic food items, like rice, is skyrocketing.

Will the recent killings push aid groups to withdraw? Unlikely.

Aid groups have continued to work in Haiti despite the challenges and danger many groups have faced over the years.

“When there is a need, that is when we are expected to work,” said Allen Joseph, a Haitian who is the program director for Mercy Corps, one of the largest international aid groups operating in Haiti. “And in Haiti, there is always need.”

Joseph and other aid workers said the latest violence targeting Missions in Haiti would most likely prompt their own aid groups to take on more security precautions, which will cost more.

“No one is spared. We live and work day by day with fear of being kidnapped or killed by an armed group,” Joseph said.

Let’s honor our veterans

Today is a unique national day. It is Memorial Day, a federal holiday. It is time to remember, honor and mourn all veterans who died while in the military defending our liberty, our freedom, and our democracy. Another day to celebrate those who have served or are serving in the military is Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

The usual observance on Memorial Day is the decoration of military graves with U.S. flags. It is so special to all of us that there is hardly a family in the nation that doesn’t have a relative to some degree or a close friend who has died in war. In my case, I have both.

As a relative, I remember on this day my first cousin, Lt. Ralph Church de la Rosa. He was my mother‘s nephew, and he was named after my father. He died in Japan of shell fragment wounds sustained while on a combat operation in Vietnam. He was assigned to the 101 First Airborne Division and was a qualified ranger. I remember today, as a close friend, Luis Monroig from Quebradillas. For a few years, we had lunch together daily as students at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez. He was a member of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (commonly known by its initials ROTC). He also died in Vietnam.

Both of their names are engraved on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. There are thousands of names on the wall of the monument. Ironically, when I visited the memorial,

the first name I recognized was the name of my cousin Ralph Church, and very near to his name was that of Luis Monroig. Tears came out of my eyes. Their lives were not lost in vain. Their lives were the real source of the essential spiritual reasons needed to support the survival of others in humanity.

I want to show them my respect, admiration, and prayers on this special day, a flower for them in my heart. This is a special day reserved by our government to remember the memory of all those who sacrificed their lives for others, as my cousin and friend did. We cannot forget it is Memorial Day, a day to remember the special people we love.

What’s Spanish for ‘chutzpah’?

Last week’s announcements by the governments of Ireland, Norway and Spain that they will recognize a Palestinian state are drawing predictable reactions from predictable quarters. Some see them as useful rebukes to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s war strategy in the Gaza Strip that will further isolate Israel. Others, including me, view them as feckless gestures that reward Hamas’ terrorism.

That’s a column for another day. For now, it’s enough to note the Spanish government’s sheer nerve.

Although Spanish public opinion overwhelmingly supports swift recognition of Palestinian statehood, it’s another story when it comes to Spain’s own independence movements. In 2017, the regional government of Catalonia held a referendum, declared illegal by Spain’s Constitutional Court, on the question of Catalan independence. Although turnout was low — in part because Spanish police forcibly blocked voting — the Catalan government said nearly 90% of voters favored independence.

The central government in Madrid responded by dismissing the Catalan government, imposing direct rule. Two years later, under the current left-wing government of Pedro Sánchez, Spain sentenced nine Catalan independence leaders to prison on charges of sedition, although they were later pardoned. This year the lower house of the Spanish parliament voted to grant amnesty to those involved in the 2017 campaign as part of a deal to prop up Sánchez’s government, despite a Senate veto. Seventy percent of the Spanish public opposes the amnesty. Catalans aren’t the only ethnic minority in Spain that has sought independence, only to encounter violent suppression.

In the 1980s, the Spanish Interior Ministry under a socialist government responded to the long-running Basque separatist movement with state-sponsored death squads, notoriously responsible for a string of kidnappings, tortures and assassinations.

The Spanish government called the separatists terrorists — as indeed some were — although their tactics look tame compared with Hamas’. By the time the conflict ended in 2011, it had claimed more than 1,000 lives.

Spain possesses two cities on the African continent, Ceuta and Melilla, both of which are claimed by Morocco and have been stormed by African migrants seeking entry into the European Union. They are protected by extensive border fences and fortifications strikingly reminiscent of Israel’s breached border fence with Gaza.

There are many other independence movements throughout Europe, from Scotland to Flanders to Corsica and the Balkans. Many of these movements tend to have affinities with Palestinians, for reasons that are obvious. More difficult to explain are governments that suppress independence-seekers at home while applauding those abroad. Some might call it deflection. To others, it looks like hypocrisy.

BAYAMÓN – La Policía investiga el hallazgo de un cadáver, a eso de las 5:34 de la tarde del sábado en la carretera PR-167 frente a un centro comercial de Bayamón.

Según la información preliminar, se recibió a una llamada a través del Sistema de Emergencias 9-1-1 sobre una situación sospechosa, Al llegar los agentes al lugar, encontraron en la acera, un carrito de com-

Bawdy comedy ‘Anora’ wins Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival

The Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival was awarded Saturday to “Anora,” a giddily ribald picaresque from American director Sean Baker about a sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch — and things get very messy.

A critical favorite, “Anora” takes a nonjudgmental attitude toward its protagonist, played by Mikey Madison in a go-for-broke breakthrough performance that critics have praised. George Lucas, who received an honorary award at the ceremony, presented the Palme d’Or. Baker hugged Lucas and thanked the jury before blurting out, “I really don’t know what’s happening now.” He dedicated his award to “sex workers past, present and future — this is for you.”

The ceremony, which took place in the Grand Lumière Theater in the festival’s headquarters, opened with a spoof of the opening crawl of the original “Star Wars.” When Lucas eventually took the stage, he received a thunderous standing ovation. The applause grew even louder when Lucas’ longtime close friend Francis Ford Coppola appeared to present Lucas with an honorary Palme d’Or. Coppola, who referred to Lucas as his “kid brother,” was at the festival with his epic “Megalopolis,” which screened in the main competition and did not win anything.

The competition jury, led by Greta Gerwig, gave a special award to the gripping Iranian tragedy “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” about a small family that comes violently undone just as the Women, Life, Freedom protest movement in Iran is igniting. Director Mohammad Rasoulof, who fled the country right before the festival opened, accepted the award in person. On May 13, he announced on Instagram that he had left Iran after being sentenced to eight years in prison for his movies; he was also to be fined and whipped, and have property confiscated.

The Grand Prix, the festival’s secondhighest honor, was given to “All We Imagine as Light,” from Indian director Payal Kapadia. A gentle drama about three women coming to terms with one another and their own desires in contemporary Mumbai, “All We Imagine as Light” was another critical favorite. In Kapadia’s acceptance speech, she thanked the three leading actresses, whom she brought onstage with her, as well as all of the workers who make the

festival run.

Jesse Plemons won best actor for “Kinds of Kindness,” the latest master-slave gross-out from Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos. French director Jacques Audiard won the jury prize, the evening’s thirdhighest one, for his competition entry, “Emilia Pérez.” That movie also won best actress. In an unusual move, the jury gave the award to four actresses from the film — its “harmony of sisterhood,” as jury member Lily Gladstone put it. Accepting the award was Spanish transgender actress Karla Sofía Gascón, who plays the title character, a Mexican cartel boss who transitions into a woman.

Best director was given to Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes for “Grand Tour,” an authentically sui generis fantasia about a British civil servant in 1917 who, in running away from his fiancée, sets off on a time-skipping exploration of postcolonialism (among other things). After giving the jury a thumbs-up, Gomes said in English, “Sometimes I get lucky.”

In a surprise, the screenplay award went to “The Substance,” an English-language horror freakout about a Hollywood actress, played by Demi Moore, who resorts to extreme measures after she is deemed to be stale goods. French director Coralie Fargeat thanked Moore, who was in attendance.

The Camera d’Or prize for best first feature went to “Armand,” a psychological thriller from Norwegian director Halfdan Ullmann Tondel about a facedown between the parents of two children, one of whom is accused of assaulting the other. (Tondel’s grandparents are Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman.)

In the run-up to the festival, rumors swirled about possible protests against the war in Gaza (none emerged) and bombshell revelations about various industry figures. The day that the festival opened, on May 14, The Guardian ran a story in which anonymous sources claimed that Coppola had tried to kiss some extras while making “Megalopolis.” Nothing more came of the story, and none of the reporters at the movie’s news conference even broached the claims with the director. In general, as festival organizers had hoped, the focus throughout the event remained largely on the movies.

Fasten your seat belts: What you need to know about turbulence

Countless travelers have experienced the distinct anxietyinducing sensation of turbulence on flights: eyes squeezed shut, hands clamped to the armrests for dear life, bracing for the roller coaster to come.

It can be intense and cause injuries during flights. From 2009-22, 163 passengers and crew members on aircraft registered in the United States were seriously injured by turbulence, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Though deaths are extremely rare, they do happen. Last Tuesday, a 73-year-old man died after a plane flying from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence and plummeted 6,000 feet in minutes. Another 18 people were hospitalized and an additional 12 people were being treated for injuries, Singapore Airlines said in a statement.

Other incidents in the last few years have also left dozens of passengers with injuries. In March 2023, seven passengers on a Lufthansa flight from Texas to Frankfurt, Germany, were hospitalized with minor injuries after their plane encountered severe turbulence. And in December 2022, about two dozen people, including an infant, were hurt on a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Honolulu that hit rough air shortly before landing.

The recent reports raise questions about whether turbulence is getting more frequent and intense.

We spoke to a handful of experts to learn more about the tricky-to-predict weather phenomenon. Here’s what they said.

What is turbulence?

Turbulence is unstable air movement that is caused by changes in wind speed and direction, such as jet streams, thunderstorms, and cold or warm weather fronts. It can range in severity, causing minor to dramatic changes in altitude and air speed.

It’s not just associated with inclement weather, but can also occur when skies appear placid. And it can be invisible both to the eye and weather radar.

There are four classifications for turbulence: light, moderate, severe and extreme. In cases of extreme turbulence, pilots can lose control of the airplane, and there can even be structural damage to the aircraft, according to the National Weather Service. Is turbulence increasing? And if so, why?

Recent research indicates that turbulence is rising and that this change is sparked by climate change — specifically, elevated carbon dioxide emissions affecting air currents.

University of Reading in England, has studied turbulence for more than a decade.

Williams’ research has found that clear air turbulence, which occurs most frequently at high altitudes and in winter, could triple by the end of the century. He said that this type of turbulence, of all categories, is increasing around the world at all flight altitudes.

His research suggests that we could encounter bumpier flights in the coming years, which could potentially result in more passenger and crew injuries.

How is turbulence monitored and measured?

Meteorologists rely on a variety of different algorithms, satellites and radar systems to produce detailed aviation forecasts for conditions such as cold air, wind speed, thunderstorms and turbulence. They flag where and when turbulence might happen.

Jennifer Stroozas, a meteorologist at the weather service’s Aviation Weather Center, called turbulence “definitely one of the more challenging things to predict.”

Using these forecasts, in addition to guidance from air traffic controllers, pilots attempt to skirt turbulent areas by adjusting their altitude to find the smoothest ride. This means flying higher or lower than the altitude where forecasters predict turbulence and potentially burning more fuel than initially anticipated, an endeavor that can be costly.

Robert Sumwalt, a former chair of the National Transportation Safety Board who now heads a new aviation safety center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, stressed that it was impossible to prevent or predict all turbulence.

“There is always the possibility of unexpected rough air,” Sumwalt said. “Generally, it’s not going to hurt you and not going to pull the wings off the airplane.”

Turbulence also presents a greater threat to small planes that are more susceptible to changes in wind speed, rather than larger commercial airliners, Stroozas of the weather service said.

Is it that dangerous? How can I stay safe during turbu-

lence?

Airplanes are designed to withstand rough conditions, and it is rare for aircraft to incur structural damage because of turbulence.

But turbulence can toss passengers and crew members around, potentially causing grave injuries such as bone fractures and hemorrhages. Multiple experts emphasized that staying seated and keeping your seat belt on as much as possible during flights were the best ways to reduce risks.

“If you stay fastened, you’re far less likely to incur an injury,” said Thomas Guinn, a professor of applied aviation sciences at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

In severe turbulence, the vertical motion of the plane will exceed gravity’s pull, Williams said.

“What that means is that if you’re not seat-belted, by definition, you’ll become a projectile. You’re a catapult. You will lift up out of your seat,” he said.

Fatalities caused by turbulence, while exceedingly uncommon, do happen. The last time a passenger on a commercial flight operated by an American airline died from a turbulence-related injury was in 1997, when a United Airlines flight from Tokyo to Honolulu experienced severe turbulence over the Pacific Ocean, according to an NTSB investigation. This passenger was not wearing a seat belt and flew up from her seat, possibly striking her head on the luggage bin, according to the investigation.

However, not all deaths attributed to severe turbulence are actually caused by it. In March 2023, a former White House aide aboard a business jet traveling from New Hampshire to Virginia died from fatal injuries initially attributed to severe turbulence. However, a preliminary NTSB investigation found that the airplane’s pilots turned off a switch stabilizing the aircraft, causing it to briefly oscillate in the air.

What about babies on laps?

Children younger than 2 years old are allowed to be carried on an adult’s lap during flights, but many industry experts, citing dangers such as turbulence, believe this practice should be prohibited.

For decades, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, a union representing about 50,000 flight attendants across 19 airlines, has argued for every passenger to have their own seat, no matter their age.

Sara Nelson, the union’s president, said in an interview that with turbulence becoming “much more common” lately, the need for young children to be properly secured in child safety seats during flights is a greater priority.

“We are talking about events in the cabin that are potentially deadly but survivable when you do the right things to protect yourself,” Nelson said.

Unexpected turbulence is the leading cause of pediatric injuries on airplanes, according to the FAA, which has detailed information about various child restraint systems and how to correctly install them onto airplane seats. Some of these products are compatible for both cars and airplanes.

For decades, the FAA and NTSB have urged parents to secure young children in their own ticketed seats and in an approved safety seat. The American Academy of Pediatrics also echoes this guidance. There is no federal law requiring these measures.

What’s it like to play Nadal on clay? ‘No fun at all.’

Casper Ruud described what it is like facing Rafael Nadal on Philippe Chatrier Court, where Nadal has won 14 French Open titles.

“He makes you suffer,” Ruud said. “First, he takes your legs, then your mind.”

Since Nadal won his first French Open in 2005 at age 19, Chatrier has become his court. Ruud was Nadal’s opponent for the most recent of those triumphs, in 2022. When asked about facing Nadal there, his eyes widened and he let out a small laugh.

That was a typical reaction of the dozen or so players The Athletic interviewed to understand what it is like to play Nadal on clay, a surface on which he has a 90.9% winning record over more than two decades. He has won 479 matches on clay, losing 48.

At Roland Garros, that figure is 97.4%: played 115, won 112, lost three. Nadal’s return to the French Open, and his expected farewell to the tournament, will begin this morning against a difficult first-round opponent, fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev, 27 (NBC, Peacock; see listings for exact time).

Most of the players interviewed, including the world No. 1, Novak Djokovic, described playing Nadal on clay as “the toughest test in tennis.” Others, like Ruud, said it was the toughest test in any sport. “He is the ultimate clay-court player,” said Gaël Monfils, a former world No. 6 who has been beaten by Nadal in all six of their meetings on the surface.

Some players do not even think it is real. “It’s a bit like playing against someone on a PlayStation because every ball comes back,” said Karen Khachanov, a two-time French Open quarterfinalist.

Ruud’s words call to mind Andy Roddick’s famous “first your legs, then your soul” description of Djokovic, so what exactly makes playing Nadal so terrifying?

From the size of the Chatrier Court and the feeling that it is impossible to get the ball past him to the heaviness of his ball to the mental torture he exerts, those who have faced him explain what it is like playing him on clay.

First up is Djokovic, who has inflicted two-thirds of Nadal’s defeats on Chatrier Court and who has played him there 10 times, more than anyone else.

“The court is bigger,” he said. “There is more space, which affects visually the play a

lot and the feeling of the player on the court. He likes to stand quite far back to return. Sometimes when he’s really in the zone and in the groove, not making many errors, you feel like he’s impenetrable. He’s like a wall.”

Rudd, who was thumped in straight sets in that French Open final two years ago, said: “It’s like Novak said, winners don’t come easy against him on Chatrier.”

To reach that final, Nadal beat Zverev in the semifinal. In a very strange match with lots of breaks, Zverev had to retire with an ankle injury in the second set while trailing, 6-7, 6-6. He had failed to win the first set, despite holding four consecutive set points.

“He becomes different,” said Zverev, who has lost five of his six matches against Nadal on clay. “His ball all of a sudden becomes a few kilometers an hour faster. His footwork and foot speed become a lot faster.”

He added: “Somehow you feel like you’re winning, but then somehow you end up not. It’s just something you only feel against him on that specific court.”

Sebastian Korda, America’s world No. 28, won just four games when he faced Nadal on Chatrier four years ago, losing, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, in a fourth-round shellacking.

“He’s as comfortable as someone can be on a tennis court, and once someone gets comfortable on a court, it becomes extreme-

ly difficult to play them,” Korda said. Nadal’s ball on clay is known to be so full of spin that players struggle to comprehend it.

“His ball? It’s heavy,” said Ruud, who was the French Open runner-up again last year. “And I think if you haven’t played tennis yourself it’s maybe hard to know what heavy means. I guess it’s the spin and rotation of his ball. The more RPMs he has on his ball, the quicker it will bounce up toward you. And when the ball bounces up at you, the more RPMs it has, the heavier it comes up at you compared to a ball that’s coming at you really flat.

“He has mastered that more than anyone else.”

Miomir Kecmanovic, who is ranked 55th and who lost to Nadal in straight sets in Madrid a couple of years ago, said: “His ball was different. Different in the way you know it’s Rafa behind the ball.”

Khachanov said the variety of Nadal’s shots when playing him on clay struck him. “It’s always different,” Khachanov said. “He finds different angles, different trajectories, he always pushes you back when he opens the court. He has so much variety and the ball speed.” He added: “It’s like chess tennis — with the pieces, the shots he has in his arsenal. He is always trying to make you have trouble.”

Roger Federer could be forgiven for still having nightmares about those French Open finals when Nadal would loop topspin forehands to force him to hit one-handed backhands from shoulder height again and again. The punishment was so severe that Federer eventually remodeled the entire shot.

Grigor Dimitrov, a three-time Grand Slam semifinalist, has lost all six matches he has played Nadal on clay, winning just one set in the process.

Nadal made him miserable. “It was no fun. No fun at all,” Dimitrov said.

One of Nadal’s characteristics is that he never takes things for granted. No matter the opponent or the event, he will always show every match the utmost respect.

That was the impression that Zizou Bergs, the world No. 101, had when he was beaten by Nadal in Rome recently. “He was hitting such a high ball with lots of spin,” Bergs said. “Playing my weaknesses. You can tell his team did their homework on me, on what I don’t like.”

The feeling of being put under relentless pressure is draining. Eventually, it becomes overwhelming. “It’s difficult physically, tactically, to handle his speed, his angle, the way he puts you under pressure,” Monfils said.

Ruud was one of the players who grew up with Nadal as their childhood hero and then trained at the Spaniard’s academy. There was a feeling he was in awe of Nadal in their final two years ago, which ended, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0.

“Of course, I wish I could make the match closer and all these things,” he said. “But at the end of the day, I can hopefully one day tell my grandkids that I played Rafa on Chatrier in the final. I’m probably going to enjoy this moment for a long time.”

As the French Open play begins, Nadal, 37, is battling injury and trying to compete at one last French Open. His biggest opponent since he won his 14th title two years ago has been his creaking body. He has not competed at Roland Garros since, nor at any Grand Slam event since January 2023.

Beating Nadal at Roland Garros has long been the toughest task in tennis, possibly any sport. Nadal’s physical issues have meant he is nowhere near as formidable as he once was.

Perhaps it is fitting that the only person who has got the better of Nadal on clay is, well, Nadal.
