Interamerican University laments passing of its former President Manuel Fernós
By THE STAR STAFF
Former Interamerican University President Manuel Fernós, who presided over the institution for 23 years, passed away on Saturday. He was 76 years old.
The announcement was made by current Interamerican President Rafael Ramírez Rivera, who regretted the passing of the institution’s tenth president.
“For more than 40 years, Mr. Fernós dedicated himself to promoting, through university education, the professional training of thousands of graduates of the Interamerican University,” said Ramírez Rivera.
Before entering the field of education, Fernós worked professionally in the private sector and also in public service in the Department of Justice and in the Commission to Combat Crime in Puerto Rico. In the educational field, he was a professor, dean of Studies (1982-1985) and dean of the Faculty of Law (1985-1992); chancellor of the Metropolitan Campus (1992-1999) and president of the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico (1999-2022).
During his 40-year career at the Interamerican University and during his tenure as president, he managed to increase the academic offering to more than 200 programs, including associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and doctorates, such as the doctorate in Theological Studies, Business and Management Development, and Psychology.
Of these programs, he managed to create more than 70 online offers. He also started eight technical careers programs in which certificates are offered, and today Intertec offers more than 30 programs.
On the other hand, he achieved the review of the consortia of exchange and international cooperation programs, including agreements with the University of Oxford in England, the Beijing School of Communications in China, with universities in Spain, Chile, the Dominican Republic, the consortia with the Latin American Network of University Cooperation, UNIVERSIA and HETS, among other agreements. With these initiatives, he promoted the internationalization of university education, using distance education and the exchange of teachers, students and educational resources. In addition, he continued the development of Educational Centers abroad, such as those established in the city of Orlando, Florida, and Panama, and more recently as manager of the Inter Philadelphia Educational Center.
Despite his long list of achievements, Interamerican’s Board of Trustees removed Fernos from the position, which led to a legal battle.
The university community of the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico expresses condolences to his wife, nephews, relatives, friends and prays that the peace and comfort of the Almighty be with them all. President Ramírez Rivera indicated that as a sign of mourning for the death of Fernós, the flags at the University will fly at half-mast for seven days, the school said.
As president of the Institution, Fernós established the Vice Presidency of Religious Affairs. In addition, the institution achieved an expansion of more than 50 million dollars in construction projects, including a building for the School of Optometry at the Bayamón Campus, a building for the Center for Computer Science and Telecommunications at the San Germán Campus, a Student Center at the Barranquitas Campus, the construction of dormitories at the Bayamón Campus, as well as expansion of facilities at the Aguadilla, Arecibo, Fajardo, Guayama and Ponce campuses, and at the Faculty of Law and student residences at the Metro Campus.
Thousands of jobs at risk unless global minimum tax legislation is passed
By THE STAR STAFF
Some 100,000 jobs may be at risk unless the government passes legislation soon to mitigate the impact of the global minimum tax (GMT) by January, according to Espacios Abiertos, a non-profit group.
EA is slated to present on November 20 at the Faculty of General Studies in the UPR Rio Piedras on the local impact of the law. Governor Pedro Pierluisi has said he is interested in convening a special session to correct certain laws and to approve legislation related to the GMT, but the incoming government has objected to it.
The global minimum tax, which is based on the Global Anti-Base Erosion (GloBE) Model Rules, ensures that large multinational enterprises pay a minimum level of tax on their income in each jurisdiction where they operate, thereby reducing the incentive for profit shifting and placing a floor under tax competition, bringing an end to the race to the bottom on corporate tax rates. That tax is 15%.
EA earlier this year analyzed the effects of the 15% GMT in Puerto Rico, evaluating both the opportunities and risks it presents.
Historically, Puerto Rico has used its limited tax autonomy to attract investment through tax incentives and tax decrees, as well as federal policies like the nowdefunct Section 936, which provided tax incentives to US multinationals doing business in the U.S. territory.
Puerto Rico has used its limited tax autonomy to attract investment through tax incentives and tax decrees, as well as federal policies like the now-defunct Section 936.
The elimination Section 936 led Puerto Rico to an economic crisis, decreasing investment and employment. In response, the government enacted laws such as Act 154 of 2010 and Act 52 of 2022 to stabilize local tax policy. “Implementing the GMT in Puerto Rico could significantly increase tax revenues in the short term but also pose long-term risks if the island does not adapt its economic model to mitigate these impacts,” the EA said in its report.
The digitization and globalization of the economy have allowed multinationals to shift profits to low-tax jurisdictions, resulting in significant tax revenue losses globally. This situation has led over 140 economies to cooperate to implement a GMT to ensure more equitable taxation and sufficient funding for essential public services.
The OECD and the G-20 have developed the BEPS or Base Erosion and Profit Shifting, which is a tax planning strategy used by multinational corporations (MNEs) to avoid paying taxes.
Some estimated 147 jurisdictions have committed to reforming international taxation through two pillars. Pillar I seeks to reassign taxing rights over the profits of large multinationals to the markets where their sales occur. Pillar II, which includes the Global Minimum Tax (GMT) and the Subject to Tax Rule (STTR), establishes a minimum tax of 15% for multinationals with consolidated annual revenues exceeding 750 million euros.
The EA report projected potential tax revenues for 2024 and 2025 under different scenarios. If Puerto Rico implemented the QDMTT, it could collect up to $3.8 billion annually, primarily from U.S. foreign corporations. However, if the QDMTT is not implemented, other jurisdictions could claim part of these revenues.
According to the EA report, the island could collect $60.0 million from European corporations and $17.6 million from corporations in other countries.
COR3 reports increase in reconstruction works for third quarter of 2024
By THE STAR STAFF
The number of reconstruction works related to the disasters of Hurricane Maria and the 2020 earthquakes paid for with funds allocated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) increased from July to September, the executive director of the Central Office of Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience (COR3) Manuel A. Laboy Rivera said.
The revelation was made in a Quarterly Progress Report.
“The technical assistance that we at COR3 offer to municipalities, non-profit entities and government agencies has been key to promoting reconstruction projects until they are completed. According to the new Quarterly Progress Report completed by municipalities, government agencies, and non-profit organizations, there are 10,137 reconstruction works in progress resulting from the disasters of Hurricane Maria and the earthquakes, with funds allocated by FEMA, amounting to $13.1 billion, which reflected an increase of 2,096 more projects in development when comparing the data with the same quarter in 2023,” explained Laboy Rivera.
The Quarterly Progress Report also reported a 64% increase, reaching 3,877 completed works with esti-
mated investments of $793.1 million. As of September 2023, 2,358 completed projects were reported with approximate costs of $525.4 million.
As an example, among the projects completed in the third quarter of 2024, are: the Central Laboratory of the Water and Sewer Authority, in Caguas. This is the only laboratory in the Caribbean certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Health to perform critical water quality tests. The Punta Salinas Spa in Toa Baja, the Manuel González Theater in Lajas, and the Félix Herrera Cruz sports complex in Yabucoa, among others, also completed their development.
When comparing the data with the previous quarter from April to June 2024, the entities leading the works reported 546 more works between the design acquisition stages and construction, representing $1,277 million in additional investment. Meanwhile, 327 works ($95.2 million) were added to the completed category.
“The growth in the course of the works has been constant. When comparing the current period with the same period corresponding to 2022, some 4,535 additional works have been executed. This represents an increase of $8,684 million in investment. In the case of completed works, there was a 173% increase. As a
result of the boost in the development of the works, the Economic Development Bank revealed that the cement sales index in October increased by 15.2%, and in the month of September, the number of jobs in the construction sector rose to 37,500, which represents a growth of 4.7%,” said Laboy Rivera.

Outgoing independent Rep. Luis Raul Torres, who conducted numerous energy-related probes in the House, criticized President-elect Donald Trump’s selection of Chris Wright as Energy Secretary on Sunday because it would revert policies favoring the use of renewable energy over fossil fuels.
“The voice of reason calls us to reflect on the recent nomination of Chris Wright as Secretary of the Department of Energy, a decision that seems to be a nod to the powerful oil and natural gas industries rather than a commitment to a sustainable energy future. Wright, known for his open support of fossil fuels, represents an apparent setback in the advances made in producing energy through renewable sources,” he said through his X account.
Trump announced Saturday that he nominated Wright to run the Department of Energy, an executive of a fracking company who has fiercely criticized the existence of a climate crisis and the transition to renewable energy sources. (Gage Skidmore/CC)
Trump announced Saturday that he nominated Wright, an executive of a fracking company who has fiercely criticized the existence of a climate crisis and the transition to renewable energy sources, to run the Department of Energy. The Trump administration is expected to shift the department’s focus away from clean energy initiatives championed under outgoing President
The State Election Commission will not publish results until the acts of each precinct are corrected, the agency’s Alternate Chairwoman Jessika Padilla Rivera said this weekend.
“We continue to finally attend to what remains of precinct 1 of San Juan, what remains of precinct two, and work on what is precinct 3. We continue to evaluate the acts to finally prove that they are all 100 percent correct, which is the biggest challenge we have faced in recent days. We continue to see results in the dissemination system of the official page of the State Election Commission. Gradually, yes, we want to see more results, but until and as long as we make sure that the minutes are correct, we will not bring results that do not match the system,” said Padilla Rivera in a press conference on Saturday.
“There are 114 precincts; we are attending to the first three precincts in San Juan; the remaining 111 are still pending. I understand that some tables already have (precinct) 4. Several (working) areas do not all work in parallel, so when one finishes, the other is not necessarily finished,” she said.
The counting tables have all the ballot boxes from precinct 1. “However, there are still pending reports that have not been balanced from precinct 1, even if you have delivered the ballot box and have attended to 100 percent of precinct 1 in the first area, which is what is being attended to. In that case, it returns to the table to balance that ballot box. So, we would have to see exactly what 100 percent of the results have already been entered into the page, because what is entered into the page is 100 percent already balanced,” she added.
The situation worsens because there are few officials available to balance the minutes for the direct nomination votes.
“It is what we want, it is what we have said all these days, we are giving main and special interest to the balancing of the acts. We had not had a high participation in the direct nomination in the previous scrutiny. That directly affects the other positions on the legislative ballot. That takes time. And we cannot work on a record if it is not balanced. Precisely the slowness that we are seeing, what is proving is that the work is being done and that we are not, as they say in the jargon of the tables, we are not messing around with the acts,” she said.
“We are working on them as they should be. What does not add up, is returned. Do we want to see progress? Yes, of course, we all want to see progress, but we cannot compare this scrutiny with previous years because we had not seen such a significant rise in direct nominations on the legislative ballot, which directly implies other changes, other impacts on other positions,” she said.
The alternate president said the electoral commissioners will be deciding soon whether or not to extend the work schedule.
On the other hand, Padilla Rivera said the SEC investigated the situation of at least 20 voters listed as deceased in the SEC system and found that it was an error.
“The lists added by hand bring those voters who are not in the regular polling station; they are added by hand and it is evaluated whether or not they are excluded due to death. The lists that have been received, we have seen that they are excluded due to death. When the investigation is done, it seems to me that recently yesterday morning, we had 20 cases of
Torres said the burning of oil and natural gas perpetuates a toxic energy model that affects people’s health, contaminates the environment, and chains present and future generations to exorbitant energy prices. “Who benefits from this dependence? Not the people, but the powerful owners and managers of these industries, whose control over energy markets has proven to be as unbreakable as it is harmful,” he said.
“The voice of reason reminds us that the transition to renewable energy is not an ideological whim, but an existential necessity. Clean energies like solar, wind, and geothermal are not only safer for the planet but also represent an opportunity to diversify economies and free citizens from the yoke of corporate interests,” he said.
He said Wright’s nomination not only puts advances in renewable energy at risk but also reinforces a system prioritizing profits over public health, air quality, and climate well-being. While other countries move toward energy self-sufficiency based on renewable resources, the United States seems set to go back decades, leading the world not toward a cleaner future, but toward a present plagued by pollution and inequality, he said.
Appointment of Chris Wright is setback to use of renewables, Torres said SEC will not publish San Juan results just yet
people excluded due to death who are not dead but have voted. It is that they are living people who by mistake excluded themselves and went to vote. So what we have seen of people excluded due to death is due to an error in the system and if they have already been identified, they are people who are alive,” said Padilla Rivera in a press conference.
“How is this done? It goes to the list of the secretariat for the Special Secretariat Board (JES in Spanish). They work on what is the inclusion. When you make the comparison of the excluded due to death and the one who is pending inclusion, there the names match, that work of adding is done by hand and it is accredited that in effect it is not a deceased person,” she added.
The electoral commissioner of the Popular Democratic Party (PDP), Karla Angleró González denounced the irregularity Thursday.

Biden’s policies offer a starting point for Trump’s border crackdown
By HAMED ALEAZIZ
President-elect Donald Trump has spent the past year railing against the Biden administration’s immigration policies, saying they left the border wide open and risked U.S. security.
But actions taken by President Joe Biden in the past year, including a sweeping asylum ban and more streamlined deportation procedures, may make it easier for Trump to fulfill his promise to shut down the border and turn back migrants as quickly as possible.
To be sure, Biden’s vision for immigration is different from Trump’s. Although the White House has enacted stricter regulations at the border, it has also emphasized legal pathways to enter the country and offered temporary legal status to migrants from certain troubled countries.
After promising a more humane immigration policy when he took office in 2021, Biden was confronted with a worldwide surge in migration that put pressure on the southern U.S. border. By his second year in office, annual border arrests topped 2 million.
As chaotic scenes emerged of migrants crowding at the border, Republicans such as Trump argued that the Democrats were unable to govern and protect American cities, and they urged a crackdown on immigration. Republican governors such as Greg Abbott of Texas and Ron DeSantis of Florida sent thousands of migrants by bus and plane to Democratic northern cities to highlight the border crisis.
Under relentless political pressure, Biden eventually took several steps that marked a radical shift in U.S. immigration policy.
In an executive order in June, Biden blocked migrants from seeking asylum at the border, the most restrictive border policy enacted by any modern Democratic president.
A key feature of the new policy is that migrants being screened at the border are no longer routinely asked whether they fear return. If they do not express fear on their own, they are quickly processed for deportation. Migrant activists say far too many people who would be eligible for asylum are being summarily rejected.
The U.S. also ramped up deportations to countries other than Mexico to record levels, built more space to hold migrants near the border and began removing people more quickly by deporting asylum-seekers directly from Border Patrol custody.

Those actions dropped border numbers to lows not seen in several years.
“All of these tools will be in effect when Trump takes office,” said Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, a senior fellow at the American Immigration Council.
Adam Isacson, who focuses on border security at the Washington Office on Latin America, a human rights organization, said that nearly 45,000 of the 54,000 migrants who crossed in September had been deported or detained.
“That certainly lays the groundwork for Trump,” he said, noting that only 9,145 people had been released into the country in September, pending an immigration court hearing.
He added: “So it won’t be too much work for Trump to get it down close to zero. Especially if they find a way to detain people
from distant and hard-to-deport countries.”
Trump has promised to close the border immediately upon taking office. He has committed to a return to a policy known as “Remain in Mexico,” which forces migrants to stay in Mexico until their U.S. cases are resolved. That would be one of his main solutions to shutting down the border, but that policy would probably take time and negotiations to put into place.
In the meantime, he can make use of the infrastructure that the Biden administration has developed.
The administration also announced in July a plan to help Panama deport migrants who cross its borders illegally as a way to cut down on migration targeting the U.S. border.
“This assistance seeks to reduce unprecedented irregular migration through the Darien region, through which over 520,000 migrants transited in 2023,” the State Department said in a statement at the time.
The Biden administration also plans to issue a regulation to make it easier for asylum officers to spot those ineligible for protection, including migrants with serious criminal records, and to quickly remove them from the country.
To increase opportunities for legal immigration, the administration is encouraging migrants to use a mobile app to apply for appointments with Border Patrol and to make a case for asylum. It also has created a program that allows people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela to enter the U.S. and stay for two years if they have a financial sponsor.
Those programs have been key targets of Trump, who has promised to undo them immediately.
“All of the Biden administration restrictions give them a starting point far beyond what they had in 2016,” said Stephanie Leutert, director of the Mexico Security Initiative at the University of Texas at Austin and a former State Department official in the Biden administration.
Leutert explained that, unlike in 2017, there are more single adults and families arriving from across the globe.
“So, in a sense, there may be more that the Trump administration will want to immediately undo (the legal pathways) and more that they may want to work with (the restrictions),” she wrote in a text message.
Trump’s cabinet picks, panned in Washington, thrill many of his voters
By MICHAEL CORKEY, ISABELLE TAFT and SHAWN HUBLER
To his detractors, President-elect Donald J. Trump’s Cabinet looks like a rogues’ gallery of people with dubious credentials and questionable judgment.
His supporters see something different.
“It’s a masterpiece,’’ Eileen Margolis, 58, who lives in Weston, Florida, and owns a tattoo business, said of Trump’s Cabinet picks unveiled over the past week. “If it was a painting, it would be a Picasso.”
A “brilliant alliance,’’ is how Joanne Warwick, 60, a former Democrat from Detroit, described many of the nominees.
“It’s pretty much a star cast,’’ said Judy Kanoui of Flat Rock,
North Carolina, a retiree and lifelong Democrat who voted for Trump for the first time this month.
Democrats, and even some Republicans, worry that these nominees for top positions in government are inexperienced, conflicted and potentially reckless. But in interviews with almost two dozen Trump voters around the country, his supporters were more likely to describe them as mavericks and reformers recruited to deliver on Trump’s promise to shake up Washington.
In Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nominee for health and human services secretary, Trump’s supporters see a crusader searching for new solutions to chronic illnesses, not a conspiracy theorist promoting questionable and debunked ideas about vaccines and fluoride.
In Matt Gaetz, the nominee for attorney general, many Trump supporters look past the ethical investigation into allegations that he had a relationship with a 17-year-old girl and possibly violated federal sex trafficking laws, and see a provocateur who is willing to punish the Democrats who unjustly prosecuted the president-elect.
“I think it’s so crazy, and I love it,’’ Merrill McCollum, 60, of Bozeman, Montana, said of the nominees.
McCollum said she voted for Trump after becoming frustrated by bureaucracy, identity politics and the rising cost of living. She is excited by his appointments of people she sees as outsiders to Washington, D.C., a place she got to know while working there during tours in naval intelligence.

“What we’ve been doing in the past really hasn’t worked,’’ she added.
Not everyone is thrilled with every nominee. Some said the choice of Gaetz, a polarizing figure in both parties, could prove an unnecessary distraction and expressed doubts that he could be confirmed. Others thought the Cabinet was not anti-establishment enough, pointing to Marco Rubio, the Florida senator who was tapped as secretary of state.
Brian Kozlowski, a 40-year-old lawyer in Orlando, Florida, said even after Trump’s resounding victory, his own expectations were relatively low that his candidate would be able to bring about lasting change in Washington. But the Cabinet appointees have made him hopeful.
“It’s an actual fulfillment of a politician dispensing with the norms,” said Kozlowski.
“The No. 1 thing to me, and a lot of Trump voters, is getting rid of the swamp,’’ he added. “This is what is shocking some people — it may actually be happening.”
Among the nominees most praised in the interviews was Kennedy, who often speaks of addressing the rise in chronic health conditions.
Many health experts are alarmed by Kennedy’s unfounded claims that vaccines cause autism and by his threats to sue medical journals and fire hundreds of employees at the National Institutes of Health. They fear that as health secretary, he could undo generations of sound public health policy.
But voters who support Trump said they admired Kennedy’s focus on environmental toxins and his break with his famous family over his unorthodox views.
Warwick said, “I bet there’s a bunch of people shaking in their boots” about Kennedy’s selection.
But in the end, she said, Democrats might like some of his policies.
Perhaps more than any other policy stance, Kennedy’s criticism of vaccines resonated with Trump supporters, many of whom said they were still angry about the mandates and business and school shutdowns during the pandemic. They blamed them on President Joe Biden, not Trump,
who was president when the pandemic started. The more criticism the Cabinet nominees elicit, Trump voters said, the more it proves that Washington is scared of change.
Donna Hutz, 60, of Hubbard, Ohio, said she has been happy about every appointment announced so far, particularly Gaetz, a former Florida member of Congress who resigned last week after Trump announced his nomination. Hutz believes that the allegations against Gaetz are false, which makes her root for his success even more.
The Justice Department under Biden declined to file charges in the case, and Mike Johnson, the House speaker, said he objected to releasing a report on an ethics committee’s investigation into the allegations because Gaetz resigned from Congress.
“It’s not what he’s done, it’s what was done to him,” said Hutz, a portfolio manager at an information technology company.
She said the backlash to some of Trump’s appointments does not surprise her, because in her view, his opponents have been blinded by the media.
“They’re losing it, and I’m enjoying every minute of it,” Hutz said of Trump’s critics.
Some people worried that the Cabinet would not work quickly enough to end the conflicts in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip. Cole Graham, 30, took issue with the selections of Rubio and Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host who was tapped to run the Pentagon.
Graham, who lives in Arizona, said those men appeared “too war hawkish.”
“I do not support further encroachment of Israel into Gaza or into the West Bank,” he said. “I was hoping we might be able to take a step back.”
Many Muslim voters backed Trump to protest the Biden administration’s unwavering support for Israel in its war against Hamas.
One of those voters, Khaled Saffuri, a Palestinian American of Fairfax County, Virginia, said he worried that Rubio is “pro-Israel to no limit.” But Saffuri believes if Trump keeps his campaign promises, he will step in to end the war.
“I didn’t think he was going to appoint angels,” said Saffuri, 65, who leads a foundation involved in foreign policy issues.
Corporate America bets on a market-friendly Trump 2.0
By TALMON JOSEPH SMITH
Donald Trump’s election victory reverberated through financial markets.
And two weeks later, bets on the economy’s path and on corporate winners or losers — known as the “Trump trade” on Wall Street — are in full swing.
Stock prices for perceived winners have snapped higher: Bank valuations have soared, as investors anticipate more lenient regulations. The same is true for many large companies seeking to consolidate through mergers and acquisitions, which have frequently been blocked or discouraged under President Joe Biden.
The share price of Tesla, run by Trump’s adviser and campaign benefactor Elon Musk, has surged by more than 40% since the election last week. Cryptocurrencies, which Trump has pledged to lend more support, popped as well, with bitcoin hitting record highs.
Based on the president-elect’s promises of drastic immigration enforcement, which might increase demand for detention services, the shares of private prison operators also rose sharply.
Presumed losers slumped in price, including smaller green energy firms benefiting from Biden-era tax credits. A range of retailers and manufacturers reliant on imported goods have also suffered because they may be negatively exposed to tariffs that Trump has floated.
The stock market overall, though, has ripped to new highs, surpassing the records it set earlier in the year.
Although a relatively strong economy will greet the next Trump administration, the president-elect’s proposals on trade, immigration, monetary policy and more will have uncertain effects, making some on Wall Street wary of the long-term outlook. And many citizens and civic groups are on edge, concerned about Trump’s pledges to settle scores and upend U.S. policy.
Yet investors and corporate leaders largely remain focused on market fundamentals: earnings growth.
Estimates of earnings growth for the next two years, already high, are being upgraded by some analysts since the election. Beyond deregulation, the Trump team’s plan to lower corporate taxes is likely to increase the earnings most companies retain, which can be used to fund expansions and increase payouts to shareholders through dividends or buybacks.
Containers at the Port of Georgia, along the Savannah River, on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024. Some investors have been comforted by a clear election result and are anticipating tax cuts and deregulation from a second Trump administration. (Adam Kuehl/The New York Times)
“We’ve already got a good earnings backdrop,” said Joseph Quinlan, head of market strategy for Merrill and Bank of America Private Bank, “and it just got better.”
Still, the market rally is not entirely driven by politics but rather, in some respects, is a reflection of investors’ relief that the election results are clear, staving off a drawn-out fight.
The scenario of “civil war or major cities flaring up with violence” did not come to pass, said Adam Parker, founder of Trivariate Research, which advises large firms. “And we knew immediately who won — that brings relief, certainty.”
The prospect of higher tariffs clouds earnings forecasts.
A dizzying amount of uncertainty remains with Trump’s return to office more than two months away.
Industry groups and most economists have been warning that broad tariffs could eventually reignite consumer inflation, hurt company earnings and potentially cause a destabilizing global trade war.
“Retailers rely heavily on imported products and manufacturing components so that they can offer their customers a variety of products at affordable prices,” Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation, said in a statement the day before the election. “A tariff is a tax paid by the U.S. importer, not
a foreign country or the exporter. This tax ultimately comes out of consumers’ pockets through higher prices.”
Tariffs could “accelerate investment in reshoring” jobs from abroad, said Samuel Rines, an economist and a macro strategist at WisdomTree, a financial firm. At the same time, Rines said, “we have no idea what’s going to be implemented, and so what you’re seeing priced in is the least-worst scenario.”
That scenario involves “tactical” tariffs, meant to extract more advantageous trading terms from global counterparts. “I wouldn’t say there is any sort of guarantee that it will be tactical, but the market assumption is that’s the case,” he added.
The imposition of new tariffs — which can happen for a long period without congressional approval — could increase costs and narrow profit margins. Generally, firms can pick their poison: raise prices to maintain their margins as they pay the import taxes, leave prices unchanged to avoid losing consumer sales or make their goods in countries with lower or no tariffs.
That last maneuver can take time, though some companies are on the move, like shoemaker Steven Madden, which told shareholders last week that it would cut nearly half of its China production within the next year to keep tariffs from eating into revenues. It is not clear, however, that this production will come
to the United States.
Some companies are already telegraphing plans to raise prices.
“If we get tariffs, we will pass those tariff costs back to the consumer,” Philip Daniele, CEO of vehicle parts supplier AutoZone, told analysts on a recent call — adding that the company would raise prices “ahead of” the imposition of tariffs, rather than wait.
Companies are uncertain about retaliation and the Fed.
Many corporate leaders may be happy to see Biden administration regulators go. But Brent Donnelly, president of Spectra Markets, a market research firm, notes that executives may be exchanging one headache for another: the wrath of Trump, who has railed against those he views as enemies of his agenda.
“There’s a lot of fear now in corporate America that you can’t say anything negative about the dear leader,” Donnelly said.
Publicly pushing back against Trump is “a headline risk” that could hurt a company’s stock price, he said, adding, “All it takes is one tweet.”
The president-elect has also asserted that he should have more say over interest rates. Current and former Federal Reserve officials say this threatens the independence of the central bank, which has a mandate to set rates in order to steer the economy toward maximum employment and price stability over the long term.
Fed Chair Jerome Powell defended the institution at a news conference last week, responding with a crisp “no” when asked if he would step down if Trump asked him to do so.
The multitrillion-dollar bond market — which tends to react negatively to news that inflation might tick higher or that the Fed might not be resolute in containing it — calmed after Powell’s remarks but remained jittery.

US defense shares, government contractors fall after Trump efficiency picks
Shares of defense companies and government contractors were lower on Friday, extending recent losses amid uncertainty surrounding President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed Department of Government Efficiency.
Trump, a Republican who won last week’s election against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, this week named Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to co-lead the proposed efficiency department, an entity Trump indicated will operate outside the confines of government.
Among defense contractors, shares of General Dynamics fell 1.5% on Friday, while Lockheed Martin was off 0.8% and Northrop Grumman was down 1.3%.
The S&P 500 Aerospace & Defense index was down 0.6%.
Changing inflation expectations are visible in the bond market, where the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield has ticked up to its highest since July.
Traders now expect a 79.1% chance of a 25-basis point reduction at the Federal Reserve’s December meeting, down from 82% prior to the data, according to the CME FedWatch tool.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 14.77 points, or 0.03%, to 43,943.42, the S&P 500 lost 4.30 points, or 0.07%, to 5,981.08, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 10.19 points, or 0.05%, to 19,220.53.
The blue-chip Dow was buoyed by a 7.1% gain in Walt Disney after the entertainment giant reported quarterly earnings that beat Wall Street’s estimates and offered robust guidance for the coming years.

Blast hits central Beirut for first time in weeks
By ISABEL KERSHNER, EUAN WARD and HWAIDA SAAD
An Israeli airstrike hit the Lebanese capital Sunday, a rare attack inside the city that comes as Israel’s military has been pounding areas outside it where Hezbollah holds sway.
Israel’s intensified push on the battlefield appears aimed at pressuring the Lebanese government and Hezbollah to accede to terms for a cease-fire for Lebanon worked out between Israeli and U.S. officials, in what Israeli analysts describe as a strategy of “negotiations under fire.”
Lebanon’s Health Ministry said one person was killed in the strike on the capital, Beirut — the first to hit the city in weeks. The infrequent attacks inside the capital have tended to target individuals belonging to Hezbollah, and the attack Sunday seemingly killed Mohammed Afif, the head of Hezbollah’s media office.
As the de facto spokesperson of Hezbollah, Afif was one of the group’s few remaining figures with a public profile. His role had gained newfound prominence in recent weeks after Israel killed Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, in September along with much of the group’s top command and leadership.
The strike in Beirut on Sunday destroyed a seven-story building in the neighborhood of Ras al-Naba, Lebanon’s staterun news agency reported. It said that search teams were working to rescue a number of people trapped under the rubble and that Afif was “coincidentally present” when the building was struck.
The building housed the Lebanese headquarters of the Arab Socialist Baath party, a small political faction aligned with Hezbollah. In a statement, the party said that its leader, Ali Hijazi, was not in the building at the time of the strike.
Hijazi appeared to confirm Afif’s death on social media. He posted a photograph of himself sitting alongside Afif and wrote: “May God have mercy on you, dear brother, beloved fighter… You knew you would join the ranks of martyrs.”
The explosion set off panic and confusion in the city. Peo-

ple rushed out into the street, some screaming, others trying to reach people by phone. Smoke and dust filled the air, and gunfire rang out as multiple ambulances rushed to the scene, where a crowd had gathered.
Um Ahmad, who gave only her first name, stood across from the building, her three young daughters huddled behind her. She said that she, her husband and their six children were staying in a nearby apartment along with dozens of others displaced by the war. The moment they heard the blast, they rushed out of their building in fear.
“We heard a loud boom and left immediately,” she said.
There was no immediate comment from Israel’s military about the strike in Beirut. Earlier Sunday, the Israeli military said it had conducted “intelligence-based strikes” against Hezbollah on the Dahiya, an area just south of Beirut where the militant group holds sway. A spokesperson for the Israeli military, Avichay Adraee, said Sunday that Israel had struck 50 targets in the area over the past week.
Abu Hussein had fled the Dahiya and taken a job as a security guard at a building in Beirut a few weeks ago. The
building where he works was the one that was hit Sunday.
After the strike, Hussein stood nearby in a daze. His head was bandaged, and streaks of blood ran down his neck.
“The building was nearly empty” when the strike hit, Hussein said, as medics tended to his wounds.
Afif had appeared in public in recent weeks to speak to reporters at news conferences in the Dahiya. During one news conference last month, Afif told reporters that Hezbollah had taken responsibility for an aerial attack that targeted the home of Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. When Israeli warnings of an imminent strike sent journalists scrambling to gather their equipment and leave, Afif told them, “The bombardments don’t scare us, so how should the threats scare us?”
A week ago, Afif said at a news conference that Hezbollah had not yet received any official proposal for a cease-fire deal — though he noted that there had been “contacts between Washington, Moscow, Tehran and other capitals” on the issue since the election of former President Donald Trump.
Hezbollah, he cautioned, remained “ready for a long war.”
Israel began an intensified military campaign against Hezbollah in September, nearly a year after the group began firing rockets into Israel in solidarity with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The offensive set off a humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, displacing nearly a quarter of the population and buckling the country’s health system.
The campaign against Hezbollah initially focused on southern Lebanon, where Israel’s military said it sought to stop the group from being able to fire rockets across the border. But the military operations have expanded in recent weeks to include cities and towns across the country, including some far from that border. And Hezbollah has maintained its ability to launch rockets into Israel.
The Israeli military said Sunday that about 20 rockets were fired into the country from Lebanon, setting off alert sirens in the area around Haifa, Israel’s main northern port city, and other places. Some of the rockets were intercepted by Israel’s air defenses, and others fell in open areas. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Biden allows Ukraine to strike Russia with long-range U.S. missiles
By ADAM ENTOUS, ERIC SCHMITT and JULIAN E. BARNES
President Joe Biden has authorized the first use of U.S.supplied long-range missiles by Ukraine for strikes inside Russia, U.S. officials said.
The weapons are likely to be initially employed against Russian and North Korean troops in defense of Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region of western Russia, the officials said.
Biden’s decision is a major change in U.S. policy. The choice has divided his advisers, and his shift comes two months before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, having vowed to limit further support for Ukraine.
Allowing the Ukrainians to use the long-range missiles,
known as the Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS, came in response to Russia’s surprise decision to bring North Korean troops into the fight, officials said.
Biden began to ease restrictions on the use of U.S.supplied weapons on Russian soil after Russia launched a cross-border assault in May in the direction of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.
To help the Ukrainians defend Kharkiv, Biden allowed them to use the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, which have a range of about 50 miles, against Russian forces directly across the border. But Biden did not allow the Ukrainians to use longer-range ATACMS, which have a range of about 190 miles, in defense of Kharkiv.
While the officials said they do not expect the shift to
fundamentally alter the course of the war, one of the goals of the policy change, they said, is to send a message to the North Koreans that their forces are vulnerable and that they should not send more of them.
The officials said that while the Ukrainians were likely to use the missiles first against Russian and North Korean troops that threaten Ukrainian forces in Kursk, Biden could authorize them to use the weapons elsewhere.
Some U.S. officials said they feared that Ukraine’s use of the missiles across the border could prompt President Vladimir Putin of Russia to retaliate with force against the United States and its coalition partners.
Continues on page 10
From page 9
But other U.S. officials said they thought those fears were overblown.
The Russian military is set to launch a major assault by an estimated 50,000 soldiers, including North Korean troops, on dug-in Ukrainian positions in Kursk with the goal of retaking all of the Russian territory that the Ukrainians seized in August.
The Ukrainians could use the ATACMS missiles to strike Russian and North Korean troop concentrations, key pieces of military equipment, logistics nodes, ammunition depots and supply lines deep inside Russia.
Doing so could help the Ukrainians blunt the effectiveness of the Russian-North Korean assault.
Whether to arm Ukraine with long-range ATACMS has been an especially sensitive subject since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Some Pentagon officials opposed giving them to the Ukrainians because they said the U.S. Army had limited supplies. Some White House officials feared that Putin would widen the war if they gave the missiles to the Ukrainians.
Supporters of a more aggressive posture toward Moscow say Biden and his advisers have been too easily intimidated by Putin’s hostile rhetoric, and they say that the administration’s incremental approach to arming the Ukrainians has disadvantaged them on the battlefield.
Proponents of Biden’s approach say that it had largely been successful at averting a violent Russian response.
Allowing long-range strikes on Russian territory using U.S. missiles could change that equation.
In August, the Ukrainians launched their own cross-border assault into the Kursk region, where they seized a swath of Russian territory.
Since then, U.S. officials have become increasingly concerned about the state of the Ukrainian army, which has been stretched thin by simultaneous Russian assaults in the east, Kharkiv and now Kursk.
The introduction of more than 10,000 North Korean troops and Biden’s response come as Trump prepares to reenter office with a stated goal of quickly ending the war.
Trump has said little about how he would settle the conflict. But Vice President-elect JD Vance has outlined a plan that would allow the Russians to keep the Ukrainian territory that their forces have seized.
The Ukrainians hope that they would be able to trade any Russian territory they hold in Kursk for Ukrainian territory held by Russia in any future negotiations.
If the Russian assault on Ukrainian forces in Kursk succeeds, Ukraine could end up having little to no Russian territory to offer
Moscow in a trade.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has long sought permission from the United States and its coalition partners to use long-range missiles to strike Russian soil.
The British and French militaries have given the Ukrainians a limited number of Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles, which have a range of about 155 miles, less than the U.S. missile system.
While British and French leaders voiced support for Zelenskyy’s request, they were reluctant to allow the Ukrainians to start using their missiles on Russian soil unless Biden agreed to allow the Ukrainians to do the same with ATACMS.
Biden was more risk-averse than his British and French counterparts, and his top advisers were divided on how to proceed.
Some of them seized on a recent U.S. intelligence assessment that warned that Putin could respond to the use of long-range ATACMS on Russian soil by directing the Russian military or its spy agencies to retaliate, potentially with lethal force, against the United States and its European allies.
The assessment warned of several possible Russian responses that included steppedup acts of arson and sabotage targeting facilities in Europe, as well as potentially lethal attacks on U.S. and European military bases.
Officials said Biden was persuaded to make the change in part by the sheer audacity of Russia’s decision to throw North Korean troops at Ukrainian lines.
He was also swayed, they said, by concerns that the Russian assault force would be able to overwhelm Ukrainian troops in Kursk if they were not allowed to defend themselves with long-range weapons.
Mr. Biden’s decision to allow Ukraine to use Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS, came in response to Russia’s decision to bring North Korean troops into the fight.
A foul fireside chat
By MAUREEN DOWD
It was such a cozy moment in the Oval Office on Wednesday morning, with the roaring fire and the warm handshake and the past presidents — including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and FDR — looking down benignly on the scene.
So why did it feel so nauseating?
It is hard to watch Donald Trump be gracious, because he is gracious only when he wins, and that’s not a good lesson for the children of America. When he loses, he tries to burn the democracy down.
Trump can play it smooth or rough, depending on whether you’re willing to knuckle under. He promised a

smooth transition but was crueler to President Joe Biden during the campaign than I’ve ever seen a presidential candidate be to anyone: Trump made fun of how Biden looked at the beach, how he was aging and his sad mental lapse at their debate, calling him “mentally impaired.”
But Biden is an institutionalist, and he honored the institution. Unfortunately, it was nauseating to watch Biden as well, because he was confronting a monster of his own making. If Biden had not bogarted the presidency, if he had not run for a second term, the Democrats would have had time to put together a stronger, centrist ticket with governors of swing states. Trump’s gloating chariot ride up Pennsylvania Avenue might never have happened.
Through the prism of his ego, Biden sees it differently. Trump told The New York Post afterward that after the “slog” of the campaign, the two combatants really enjoyed seeing each other. And it’s hard not to imagine that a frisson of satisfaction must have crossed Biden’s mind as he welcomed Trump back, because, in his view, it ratified his contention that he was the only one who could have beaten Trump.
This ritualistic tableau did not take place the last time these two transitioned, when Biden took over from Trump. Partly that was because of COVID, and partly it was because Trump was busy throwing monkey wrenches into the transition and desperately devising scenarios to purloin the election.
At the time, in mid-November 2020, President-elect Biden warned that Trump’s refusal to authorize an orderly transition would stain him as “one of the most irresponsible presidents in American history,” adding that “it sends a horrible message about who we are as a country.”
Trump’s election taught us a lot about who we are as a country, and the nearly two-hour Oval meeting, juxtaposed with the announcements of Trump’s bizarre Cabinet picks, was emblematic of an important truism in Washington: Democrats often try to play fair, while Republicans play to win; Democrats sometimes want to be right more than they want to win.
Just as President Barack Obama did in his transition
meeting with Trump in 2016, Biden had to sit there and be gracious while he contemplated all his accomplishments going down the drain at the hands of a man he has total contempt for.
Perhaps the most telling signal was sent by Melania Trump, who didn’t bother to show up at all. Underscoring that lapse in politesse, Jill Biden delivered a handwritten note to the president-elect to give to his wife.
Melania’s no-show was a way of saying: The Trumps tried, in their way, to do things the official way last time. But this time, they’re going to do any damn thing they want. They’re going to run the country like one of Trump’s companies. Tradition will be subsumed by Trumpism. And

The ‘king of weird fiction’ writes his strangest novel yet
By ALEXANDRA ALTER
Jeff VanderMeer has been called “the poet laureate of weird fiction,” the “king of weird fiction” and “weird Thoreau.” So it’s notable that VanderMeer says his new novel, “Absolution,” is his weirdest book yet.
“Absolution” is an eerie and unsettling coda to the books that make up his bestselling Southern Reach trilogy, which were published in quick succession in 2014. The series went on to sell more than 1.5 million copies in the United States alone, and was translated into 37 languages. In the first three novels — “Annihilation,” “Authority” and “Acceptance” — a shadowy agency sends ill-fated expeditions of researchers into a contaminated region on the Forgotten Coast called Area X, where human inhabitants have mysteriously disappeared and the plants and animals have undergone strange mutations, evolving into something alien. When the series concluded, Area X was spreading, and readers were left pondering the fate of humanity and the planet.
VanderMeer delighted fans this year when he announced he’d written a surprise fourth volume. And in his trademark hallucinatory fashion, the new novel delivers as many questions as answers.
During a video interview from his home in Tallahassee, Florida, Vandermeer spoke about why he wanted to return to Area X, how he’s kept the mystery alive for a decade and why he thinks alligators are misunderstood.
This conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity.
Q: What made you want to go back to Area X?
A: In 2017, I had this idea for an expedition of biologists to the same location 20 years before the events in “Annihilation.” I wrote the first few pages of “Absolution,” and then I thought, what does it mean, who’s mediating this experience? For a long time I didn’t know the answer to that, so I set it aside.
Q: What jump-started it again?
A: There was a long gestation period. It was after what I would say were some pretty terrible years during the pandemic, and I hadn’t written anything for a while. Then I woke up and had the complete vision for the novel in my head. I was writing morning, noon and night. I was in the grip of the thing, it was flowing out of me. There are certain scenes I don’t remember writing.
Q: A lot of readers wanted to learn what happens after the end of the trilogy, when the situation is pretty dire: Area X is spreading uncontrollably and looks like it will colonize the planet. Why did you decide to go back into the past instead?
A: To describe what happens after “Acceptance,” when Area X takes over, would be almost impossible. It would be so alien or removed that it felt like a perspective I couldn’t really write. But this book is kind of like a prequel, contiguous with the prior few books, and it’s also sneakily a sequel. So it kind of allowed me to do what I didn’t feel like I could do directly, and that was exciting.
Q: Why do you think you and so many of your readers are still thinking about Area X?
A: I think because it did come so deeply out of my sub -

conscious. The fact that I was sick when I wrote it, recovering from dental surgery, and the fact that I was still unpacking its meaning in my mind after it was written, and then it took on so many different meanings from other people. There have been so many different interpretations, because of the ambiguity in the books. So people can see a lot of different things in the books, and then when they reflect it back at me, it makes me think about the books differently as well.
Q: How did readers’ reactions make you think differently about the series?
A: There’s something like 17,000 academic papers on the Southern Reach books. To give you just one example, Alison Sperling wrote this paper, “Second Skins,” and all the questions she raised about contamination, permeability, the environment in that paper, I thought they were fascinating.
When I wrote “Absolution,” there’s a really key aspect that I credit her with: Lowry’s fear of contamination from the suit. It really adds something to his character and your understanding of him, and it wouldn’t be in here without that paper.
Q: One of the unusual things about these books is how much remains a mystery at the end. How do you strike the right balance of giving readers a satisfying conclusion while
also engaging them with questions that might not have answers?
A: It’s the conundrum of the series: If I explain too much, I betray the whole idea of exploring the unknowability of the universe. It’s important in fiction sometimes to show our position relative to the universe, because we often feel like we have more control or more knowledge than we actually have. But it’s also up to the readers. Readers are willing to complete this in their imagination. You’re entering a pact where you’re giving room to the reader to engage their imagination. And here they’re filling in, in a sense, a more total explanation.
Q: Some readers and critics see an urgent message about the climate crisis in the series. Is that something you hoped readers would take away from it?
A: I have to be careful about thinking too much about those types of questions directly, because I really don’t like didactic fiction. In terms of those environmental themes, I think they’re in there indirectly and they’re posed more as questions. They’re never really resolved in the narrative, because I don’t know that fiction is supposed to supply those kinds of definitive answers. But it can raise some interesting questions. It can do things that make you uncomfortable.
Q: How do you feel about being called the “king of weird fiction?” That’s quite a title.
A: I don’t mind it. I would say that “Absolution” leans harder into that than a lot of my prior books, even my prior Southern Reach books. It’s the most uncanny of the four. I like the term “weird fiction” because I thrive best when there’s not strict categorization around my books, and weird, being kind of amorphous, helps with that.
But it also speaks to the nature of these books, which is that weird fiction is, at its heart, providing a fourth way of interpreting the world, by allowing fiction — rather than religion, philosophy or science — to try to interpret the unknowable.
Q: You live in Florida, and there are some big moments in this book involving a very unusual alligator.
A: I didn’t tackle alligators until this book. I feel like alligators in Florida are like a cliché, so I wanted, by the time I wrote about them, for it to be something big and different. I have a lot of experience jumping over alligators and things, and I wanted to get that experience in there, in a loving tribute, and thus was born the Tyrant. Alligators are much misunderstood. They’re good parents and they’re very social animals. No one will believe me.

Why 2 big-league teams will squeeze into small homes in 2025
By VICTOR MATHER
Major League Baseball teams are worth billions of dollars and generally fill mighty, 40,000- to 50,000-seat stadiums at premium prices dozens of nights each year.
So why are two of them playing next season in bandboxes that can barely fit 10,000 fans?
The Tampa Bay Rays announced Thursday that because the roof of their home stadium, Tropicana Field, was shredded by Hurricane Milton last month, they will play next season in the 11,000-seat George M. Steinbrenner Field, which normally hosts the Tampa Tarpons of the minor league Florida State League as well as the New York Yankees’ spring training games.
And after leaving Oakland, their home of more than 50 years, the A’s will play the next three seasons in Sacramento, California, while they wait for a stadium to be built for them in Las Vegas, their new permanent home.
Their stadium in Sacramento — Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, California, directly across the Sacramento River from downtown — seats about 10,000, although a few thousand more can fit on a grassy hill by the outfield. It is normally home to the Sacramento River Cats of the Pacific Coast League, a minor league team.
The Oakland/Sacramento/Las Vegas team can now theoretically lay claim to three cities’ fan bases, but will any of them turn up for the games?
The A’s drew an average of 11,500 disillusioned fans in 2024, when it was clear the team would be departing Oakland. That was the lowest figure in the major leagues. And those fans seem unlikely to follow the team 80 miles northeast, choosing instead to look elsewhere for their baseball fix.
“There are so many teams littered with former A’s players; I see people continuing to follow players,” said

Bryan Johansen, an engineer and a founder of Last Dive Bar, an Oakland A’s fan group. “The vast majority are pretty much done with baseball.”
Vegas fans anticipating the team’s 2028 arrival might be lured for a peek at their future hometown club, but they are a nine-hour drive away.
That leaves fans in Sacramento, who have only one major men’s professional sports team — the Kings of the NBA. Baseball fans around the California capital have offered a mix of reactions, from indifference to mild curiosity to enthusiasm.
The main attraction for many fans who end up at the ballpark might indeed be the visiting team — although that could well mitigate what little home-field advantage the A’s muster in Sacramento. Others might come for the long ball: There should be plenty of home runs hit out of the small park.
And there is also a more enduring problem: The quality of the A’s themselves. Their record was a paltry 69-93 in
2024, and that was actually an improvement over the previous two seasons.
In an acknowledgment of the peripatetic nature of the team, it will go by a naked “Athletics” without any city attached to its name.
The Tampa Bay Rays at least aren’t going very far. The team drew 16,500 fans per game last year at the Tropicana, in St. Petersburg, Florida, well under its full capacity of 42,000 (many of those seats aren’t ever used, and attendance is normally capped at 25,000). So they may not miss out on much in terms of ticket sales, even in their much smaller temporary home across the bay in Tampa.
The damage to the Rays’ stadium from Hurricane Milton, which destroyed its roof and parts of its interior, is expected to take a full year and more than $50 million to fix. The Rays had been planning to move into a new stadium in 2028 anyway, although for now they are expected to return to the Trop, as it is known, when it is ready.
MLB teams have occasionally dropped in at smaller parks over the years, either voluntarily or otherwise. The Rays played some games at Walt Disney World in 2007 and 2008, and two games were held at a “Field of Dreams” park in Iowa in 2021 and 2022.
In 2003, the Expos, who were on their way out of Montreal, played a significant chunk of the season in an 18,000-seat stadium in Puerto Rico. The Toronto Blue Jays played the COVID-shortened 2020 season at an 18,000-seat stadium in Buffalo, New York, and started the 2021 season in an 8,000-seat stadium in western Florida to avoid the hassle of crossing the U.S.-Canada border under pandemic restrictions.
Just after the Brooklyn Dodgers’ only World Series win in 1955, their owner, Walter O’Malley, who was itching to take the team out West, decided to tweak New York City by playing 15 games in two years across the Hudson River, at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, New Jersey.
That ballpark, which seated 24,000, was fairly large for a minor league venue, and it filled up with eager Jersey fans for at least some of the games.
Asked how he got to New Jersey for the first game, in April 1956, Dodgers slugger Duke Snider quipped: “I swam over. It wasn’t bad. There was a little debris in the river. Maybe I’ll come by submarine the next time.”
Next year, the remaining Oakland fans are unlikely to travel to Sacramento by any means of conveyance. Still, many of them, despite their antipathy toward John Fisher, the owner who moved the A’s out of town, say it will be hard to quit the team entirely.
“I got a big old A’s tattoo on my arm,” Johansen said. “I’ve been a fan for over 40 years. You can’t just erase that. I’ll still follow them for the purpose of dragging John Fisher every step he takes.”
