González Colón promises legislation in initial months of administration

Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón, the apparent governor-elect of Puerto Rico, outlined her work agenda late Tuesday focused on inclusion, respect and economic development, after vote tallies showed her winning the race for La Fortaleza in the general elections.

At a press conference, González Colón thanked the people of Puerto Rico for the trust placed in her and expressed her commitment to be the governor of all Puerto Ricans, regardless of whether they voted for her or not.

“Today begins a new page of respect for all those who think differently, because I am going to be the governor of all Puerto Ricans, of those who voted, of those who did not vote, and of those who did not support me,” she said.

The presumptive governor-elect stressed that her administration will focus on addressing the needs of people with functional diversity, pointing out that in Puerto Rico there are more than 784,000 people who are deaf, have autism, Down syndrome, special conditions, use wheelchairs or canes, or are blind.

“The government will treat all of them with justice, attention, and a sense of urgency,” she said.

González Colón also pledged to improve care for the hundreds of thousands of seniors who live alone on the island.

“The government will move to change public policy to care for the fastest-growing population in Puerto Rico: our elderly,” she said.

In the educational field, she highlighted her origins in public schools and emphasized that any public school student can achieve his or her goals with discipline and effort.

“This victory is not mine, it is a victory of the people of Puerto Rico against those who sought to impose their styles or their visions,” González Colón said, emphasizing her commitment to comply with the approved New Progressive Party government program.

González Colón announced that she will begin working on several key initiatives, including seeking a second operator for LUMA Energy, the private consortium contracted to manage the island’s electric power transmission and distribution system, to resolve the entrenched problems with the grid.

She also plans to promote the construction of new generation plants and their conversion to natural gas.

In the coming days, González Colón will meet with members of the House of Representatives and Senate caucus to select the new legislative leadership and advance the agenda that will begin in January. Among the priorities mentioned are the approval of a new permitting law, the establishment of bilingual schools in Puerto Rico and the review of federal funds for reconstruction projects that are

expected to be completed during the coming four-year term.

“The work agenda is there, it is outlined and we are going to give special attention to it,” González Colón said.

She added that she will name the group of people who will make up the transition committee of the incoming government to facilitate the process of change of administration.

The soon-to-be governor-elect emphasized her desire to overcome hate speech and intolerance, promoting an inclusive and respectful government.

“The hate speech is over, the intolerance is over in the government that I want for all Puerto Ricans,” González Colón said. “There will be respect, there will be uplift, there will be inclusion, there will be space for this island to move forward, to develop; our people will not have to move away and they can prosper here.”

González Colón thanked the outgoing governor, Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia, Rep. Jesús Manuel Ortiz, her Popular Democratic Party rival in the governor’s race, and former governor Alejandro García Padilla, as well as many lawmakers for their congratulatory calls.

With emotion, she dedicated her victory to her two children and her family, acknowledging the unconditional support they gave her during the campaign.

“They won’t understand this now, but when years pass they will see everything that was said in this campaign and I want them to know that it was worth it,” she said.

González Colón went on to express her optimism about the future of Puerto Rico.

“For me, a new path begins, a new story, which is not my story, it is the story of the people of Puerto Rico who overcome, who rise, who fight and who achieve what they set out to do,” she said. “Puerto Rico can do anything. We are great. Now we will be even greater.”

Dalmau: PIP-MVC Alliance ‘rewrote history’

“We triumphed and rewrote the history of the country today. … We are the second political force in the country,” said Juan Dalmau Ramírez, the candidate for governor for the Alliance (“Alianza de País”) made up of his Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) and the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC), upon entering the PIP central committee headquarters on election night.

“Who would have thought that a candidate from the Puerto Rican Independence Party, representing a countrywide alliance, would break the back of the two-party system in Puerto Rico?” he said, claiming victory for the Alliance over an intense campaign focused on the risks and dangers that a victory for an independence party supposedly represents for the island.

On Wednesday morning, when the State Elections Commission issued a second preliminary certification of partial election results, Dalmau had accumulated 32.78%, or 364,145

of the votes cast for governor, placing him second behind the leading vote-getter, Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón of the New Progressive Party (NPP) with 39.46%, or 438,183 votes.

Ortiz González, was in a distant third place meanwhile with 21% (233,470) of the votes.

Javier Jiménez Pérez of the Dignity Project had the fourth-most votes with 73,613, or 6.63%, while Javier Córdova Iturregui of the MVC received 1,346 votes.

and the Alliance “to this electoral victory” was one that did not begin with the 2024 electoral campaign but that has been “building for a long time.”

“This has been a construction of the country’s conscience, where in the last elections 14 percent supported my candidacy and 14 percent supported the candidacy of Citizen Victory,” the pro-independence leader said. “Suddenly, 28 percent decided to build a new country. And today, we not only achieved the support of those two political forces, but many popular [PDP] and statehood [NPP] figures gave me their confidence … ”

PIP Sen. María de Lourdes Santiago, who won re-election, said “what we are experiencing today is something historic.”

Santiago anticipated that the Alliance could achieve greater electoral successes with the election of several of its candidates to various positions, as was the case with lawyer Adriana Gutiérrez of the PIP, who was elected to the District 4 (San Juan) seat in the island House of Representatives.

Despite the difference in votes between Dalmau and González Colón, the PIP leader reiterated that there are no final results until the last vote cast is counted.

PDP fall to 3rd place was result of protest vote, party leaders say

In analyzing the performance of the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2024 election, PDP President Jesús Manuel Ortiz González, the pro-commonwealth party’s candidate for governor, said the party’s third-place position resulted from a protest vote against Puerto Rico’s heretofore only other major political force, the New Progressive Party (NPP), that led to an incorrect maneuver.

For the first time in its history, the PDP finished behind perennial also-ran the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) in a governor’s race.

“I am leaving this contest without any accusations about my character, without any accusations about my career as a public official,” Ortiz González said at a press conference. “It was a protest vote trying to defeat a government, but it turned out to be wrong and we anticipated that. The one who had the political structure and the team to be able to execute a government agenda was the Popular Democratic Party, and the result is what happened here. So I can tell you with complete conviction that even the polls they used to support the narrative presented me as the candidate with the best numbers in personal terms of what the voters think about me.”

He said the results were the result of

a mistaken narrative that led many people, including PDP voters, to think that the correct vote to stop four more years of the NPP was a vote for the Alliance between the PIP and the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC).

“And it turned out that it was not like that, and we anticipated it,” said Ortiz González, who as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the State Elections Commission’s most recent available report on the vote count, had garnered 21%, with 233,470 votes.

He said the PDP will analyze the results, find ways to correct what was done wrong and learn from past mistakes.

Pablo José Hernández Rivera of the PDP, the apparent resident commissioner-elect, stated that “the opposition vote was diluted by the mistaken impression that the useful vote that could defeat Jenniffer [González Colón, the NPP gubernatorial candidate] was a vote in favor of [PIP-MVC Alliance candidate] Juan Dalmau.”

“And today, we saw that this was wrong and the result is that the opposition has been fragmented,” he said.

Ortiz González contended that the result achieved by Dalmau Ramírez, on track to be the runner-up to González Colón in the governor’s race, cannot be attributed to the so-called Alliance or the PIP.

“Here we have the possibility of a candi-

date who is running under the PIP coming in second,” Ortiz González said. “It is not the PIP, it is not even the Alliance. Because the legislators did not manage to get elected. That is the reality.

San Juan [mayoral candidate of the Alliance, Manuel Natal] did not, apparently, either. Here, there was a phenomenon of a candidate and a narrative was established and I always said that the protest vote did not necessarily generate a change. I also said that this vote would help the NPP win.”

“An analysis is to be done after finishing

I responsibly believe that we have to do an introspection, but that introspection has to be done when we have all the results on the table,” Ortiz González added. “There is still a lot to count and many votes that have been counted for us, but I am not one of those who hide the sun with my hand. There is a challenge; there is an analysis, an examination, and an introspection that we have to do as an institution, and as president of the party, I am going to promote, and I am going to make sure that this happens.”

Hernández Rivera: Status won’t be a priority in Washington

Pablo José Hernández Rivera, who is on track to become Puerto Rico’s next resident commissioner in the United States Congress, on Wednesday rejected the idea of presiding over the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) and said political status is not an issue.

He also denied that the PDP is at a critical juncture after the result of Tuesday’s elections.

“I have heard a lot of analysis that the Popular Democratic Party is in a critical moment,” Hernández Rivera said in a press conference. “... And the fact is that although we had the undesirable result that we had in the governorship, we also made history in other ways. We won more mayorships than last time and as for the victory of the resident commissioner, if the current numbers hold, it is the widest margin of victory by a Popular Democratic Party candidate on the state ballot since 1964.”

“[Tuesday’s] result on the state ballot, although we regret it very much for the governorship, for the commissionership it is a result that we have not seen since Luis Muñoz Marín was on the Popular Party ballot,” he added. “And with that context and within those circumstances, my message to the ‘populares’ is, there is a future.”

At around 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to the latest available vote count numbers from the State Elections Commission, Hernández Rivera had a comfortable lead in the resident commissioner contest, with 44.55% of the vote (472,292 votes). William Villafañe Ramos of the New Progressive Party was at 35.05% (371,470 votes), Ana

Irma Rivera Lassén of the Citizen Victory Movement-Puerto Rican Independence Party Alliance was at 10% (106,025 votes), Roberto Karlo Velazquez Correa of the Puerto Rico Independence Party had 5.23% (55,383 votes), and Viviana Ramírez Morales of the Dignity Project stood at 5.20% with 55,088 votes.

Hernández Rivera insisted that for the moment he has no interest in presiding over the Popular Democratic Party to seek an office in 2028.

“I was elected by the people to be their resident commissioner, not to begin campaigning for an election four years from now,” he said. “Regarding the presidency of the PDP, I believe that the party has a president and that president must be given space to make

the decisions he wants to make about his political future. I will not exert any pressure regarding the presidency of the PDP. I think we have plenty of time to discuss that in the coming weeks.”

On the issue of status and the governor-elect’s claim on statehood, Hernández Rivera reiterated that it is not his priority.

“As I said throughout the campaign, I do not recognize the validity of that [Tuesday’s status] plebiscite because it is not binding and because it did not include the option of maintaining and improving the Free Associated State,” he said. “In addition to that, I believe that the results of the plebiscite reflect a setback for statehood because when you add the votes for independence, the Free

Association and the blank and void votes, which were the votes that the PDP asked for, statehood drops from the 52% it obtained in 2020 to 47 or 48%, meaning that it no longer has a majority.”

“In addition to that, I have seen statements made today by Mitch McConnell, who is the outgoing leader of the Republican [Senate] minority, because I understand that they are going to elect a new majority leader, but with the Republicans controlling Congress, he said that one of the things they are going to do is that they are not going to admit new states that could affect the partisan balance, which makes it more than clear that they are not going to approve anything that could make statehood viable for Puerto Rico, so I believe that we should leave that issue aside and focus on the country’s true priorities, which are its economic development, the parity of federal programs, and the reconstruction of the [electric power] network,” Hernández Rivera said. “Emphasizing that with Donald Trump’s victory and the Republicans’ victory in the Senate, we still don’t know what will happen in the House, parity in federal programs becomes even more difficult and complicated, that party being fiscally conservative and adverse to that type of programs, but in that sense we hope to count on the [resident] commissioner [apparent governor-elect Jenniffer González Colón], who is a Republican, who is the person, the highest-ranking Republican in Puerto Rico, to help us in those efforts. And she knows, and I reiterate, that she can count on my absolute collaboration in economic development measures and parity in federal programs for Puerto Rico.”

PDP boosts advantage in city halls by flipping 5 towns

While the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) lost the gubernatorial race, it won in 45 towns, following changes in at least six municipalities.

The incumbents in at least six towns lost to their challengers, a trend that helped the PDP.

As expected, the municipality of San Sebastián went to the PDP after Mayor Javier Jiménez Pérez became the Dignity Project’s gubernatorial candidate. San Sebastián opted to support Eladio Cardona

In Ciales, the PDP candidate, Jesús Resto Rivera, defeated the New Progressive Party (NPP) incumbent, Alexander Burgos Otero. The victory was the first for the PDP since 2012.

Humacao, meanwhile, went back to becoming a PDP bastion.

After the death of mayor Marcelo Trujillo Panisse, the town went with Reinaldo Vargas Rodríguez of the NPP in the 2020 election. He was convicted of corruption.

In Tuesday’s election, the seat went to Trujillo Panisse’s daughter, Rosamar

Trujillo Plumey.

NPP candidate Danny Santiago Nuñez won the mayor’s seat in Villalba.

In 2020, the people of Maunabo voted to remove the PDP mayor, Jorge Luis Márquez Pérez, in favor of Ángel Omar Lafuente Amaro of the NPP.

However, Márquez is back to lead city hall after Tuesday’s vote.

The people of Moca also changed their mayor, as it looks like the PDP candidate, Efraín Barreto Barreto, was on Wednesday to defeat Ángel “Beto” Pérez Rodríguez of the NPP. The numbers were not final at press time.

America hires a strongman

Donald Trump told Americans exactly what he planned to do.

He would use military force against his political opponents. He would fire thousands of career public servants. He would deport millions of immigrants in military-style roundups. He would crush the independence of the Department of Justice, use government to push public health conspiracies and abandon America’s allies abroad. He would turn the government into a tool of his own grievances, a way to punish his critics and richly reward his supporters. He would be a “dictator” — if only on Day One.

And, when asked to give him the power to do all of that, the voters said yes.

This was a conquering of the nation not by force but with a permission slip. Now, America stands on the precipice of an authoritarian style of governance never before seen in its 248-year history.

After defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, who would have become the first female U.S. president, Trump will bring his own historic firsts into the White House: the only president convicted of dozens of crimes, accused of dozens more and twice impeached.

Unlike in 2016, when he scored a surprise electoral victory but lost the popular vote, Trump will go to Washington able to claim a broad mandate. Over his four years out of power, he rebuilt the Republican Party in his image, creating a movement that only seemed to strengthen with every recrimination. He will begin his second term bound by few political norms, after a campaign in which he seemed to defy every one.

He did well in the battleground states, winning at least five of the seven, and appeared on track to win the popular vote — the first time a Republican candidate has done that since George W. Bush in 2004. His party flipped the Senate, and was in range of maintaining control of the House of Representatives. Blue areas shifted toward him, with Trump improving his performance in places like New York City by double digits. So did suburbs, rural areas, even college towns.

“America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” Trump told cheering supporters at the convention center in West Palm Beach, Florida, for a victory party before the result was official. “I will govern by a simple motto: promises made, promises kept.”

That mandate came not just from the American people, he said.

“Many people have told me that God spared my life for a reason,” he said. “That reason was to save our country.”

His victory was a direct repudiation of some top aides, military brass and Republican officials who served in his first administration. They had publicly warned that he would not save the nation but destroy it.

Yet the electoral climate was ripe for Trump — though he had a hand in creating the weather.

In the wake of the pandemic, which critics said his administration badly mismanaged, the country grew more skeptical of government. Trust in the media, science, medicine, the judicial system and other mainstay institutions of American life plunged as more voters embraced the doubts Trump had sown for years.

Public opinion shifted in his direction on issues that had long been the centerpiece of his political movement. Even Democrats embraced stricter policies on immigration and crime in the 2024 race, underscoring how much his relentless focus on the border had resonated.

After his defeat, Trump spent four years tightening his grip on the Republican Party, to the point where both lawmakers and voters professed to believe his lies that the 2020 election was stolen from him. The number of Americans identifying as Republican edged ahead of Democrats for the first time in decades.

Even the value of democracy itself was in question. In a poll conducted by The New York Times/Siena College last week, nearly half of all voters said they were skeptical that the American experiment in self-governance was working, with 45% saying that the nation’s democracy does not do a good job representing ordinary people.

Democrats left those concerns unanswered. Instead, Harris’ condensed campaign largely endorsed the status quo of the Biden administration, offering a rallying cry around protecting democracy without specifics on how to fix what so many said is a broken system — none more so than Trump.

Poll after poll showed that the economy remained the biggest issue, followed by immigration and frustration over the rising prices of groceries and housing. Trump ran hard on pledges to lower costs and seal the southern border, while offering ideas to eliminate entire categories of taxation, playing on economic anxieties to broaden his coalition.

But those economic promises were interwoven with a steadfast refusal to moderate his message. Unleashing a fire hose of insults and conspiracies, Trump gambled that a nation unmoored by a deadly pandemic and soaring inflation, and deeply dissatisfied with the incumbent who had defeated him, would be ready to reembrace him as a blunt-speaking, menacing strongman who would fix it.

Republicans clinch control of the Senate

Republicans seized control of the Senate in Tuesday’s voting, picking up at least three Democratic seats and protecting their own embattled lawmakers to end four years of

Democratic control.

Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who party leaders hoped could overcome the Republican tide in his solidly red state, was defeated in his bid for a fourth term by luxury car dealer Bernie Moreno. Brown’s loss came after Gov. Jim Justice of West

became “political prisoners.” The siege, which killed at least seven people and injured 150 more, was recast as a “day of love.”

Instead of softening the crude rhetoric that has long been one of his hallmarks, he became more obscene, even appearing to pantomime a sex act at a rally in the campaign’s final week. He wooed Black and Latino voters with false claims that migrants were stealing their jobs and were responsible for a wave of violent crime.

Trump uttered the kind of insults about Harris and other prominent female politicians that were once unthinkable to say in public. Even his appeals to women, a group he was struggling to win, were laced with a sense of menace: In the final weeks of the race, he promised to protect women — “whether the women like it or not.”

He proudly flouted the backlash to one of his signature accomplishments — overturning Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision guaranteeing a constitutional right to an abortion — and appeared to pay little price at the polls.

And he ended the race by insulting the Puerto Rican voters his campaign had spent months trying to woo.

Throughout the race, Trump’s most faithful supporters showed little discomfort with this abrasive style. As for his policies, they embraced some and chose to disregard others. When asked about his most divisive plans — like wide-scale deportations and a radical reassessment of American commitment to NATO — many of his voters shrugged, saying they doubted that such extreme measures would ever come to fruition despite his repeated promises.

For these supporters, Trump’s win represents both the dawn of a new future and a rightful restoration. Yet whether Americans — even some of those who voted for him — will like the reality of Trump’s plans remains to be seen.

What is clear, in the end, is that Americans wanted change. And now, they will surely get it.

Virginia easily won the slot opened up by the retirement of Sen. Joe Manchin, who served most of his career in the Senate as a Democrat before becoming an independent this year.

Republican Tim Sheehy was declared the victor Wednesday morning over Sen. Jon Tester, the three-term incumbent Democrat, in Montana’s closely watched Senate race as Republicans extended their margin for the congressional session that will convene in January.

after another Republican, Sen. Deb Fischer of Nebraska, held off an unexpectedly steep challenge from Dan Osborn, who ran as an independent. Republicans, whose campaigns benefited from former President Donald Trump’s strength in battleground states, could pad their new majority even more given very tight races in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Nevada that remained undecided.

In the other congressional battle, Republicans were making early gains in their fight to keep control of the House, though several critical races in battleground states and in California remained too close to call.

Democrats picked up two seats in New York and held on to one each in Michigan and New Mexico, but still needed to defend several incumbents and pick off a number of other Republicans to win back control. The GOP protected vulnerable House incumbents around the country, picked up a key Central Michigan district and appeared on track to flip two critical seats in Pennsylvania, where Democrats conceded before the final results were known.

It could be days before enough results are known to declare a winner in the House.

Top Senate Republicans cheered their success, which will give them a leading role in shaping policy in the nation’s capital next year and the ability to confirm judges and executive branch nominees put forward by the Trump administration.

“Voters are trusting Senate Republicans with an extraordinary opportunity,” said Sen. John Barrasso, the No. 3 Republican, who was reelected in his own race in Wyoming. “As a new Republican Senate majority, our focus will be to take on an agenda that reflects America’s priorities — lower prices, less spending, secure borders and American energy dominance.”

The new majority will be under new leadership for the first time in 18 years since Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is stepping down from the top post he has held since 2007. Republican senators are scheduled to choose their leaders next week as they prepare to assume chairmanships of committees that have been run by Democrats since 2021.

The loss of the majority led by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., was a major disappointment for Democrats who had hoped to navigate a narrow path to remaining in power. But the task of defending seats in states Trump had repeatedly carried proved too difficult.

“We may be tempted to second-guess ourselves and question whether we worked hard enough or long enough,” Brown told his supporters after conceding defeat at a reception in Columbus, Ohio. “That is not our story.”

The fight for Senate control largely fo-

cused on Ohio and Montana, two Democratic-held states that Trump carried in 2016 and 2020 — and won handily again Tuesday night.

Brown, a progressive Democrat with strong labor union ties, emphasized abortion rights and federal aid he had helped secure for his state, but Moreno hit him on immigration and transgender rights. Brown also had to contend with Trump’s popularity in the state.

“We talked about wanting a red wave,” Moreno told his supporters as he claimed victory in Westlake, Ohio. “I think what we have tonight is a red, white and blue wave in this country.”

Tester was considered even more endangered than Brown, running in a Western state that has grown increasingly Republican since he was elected in 2006. Sheehy, a decorated former Navy SEAL and businessperson, won despite scrutiny for conflicting stories about how he received a bullet wound in his arm.

The Montana race had been seen as critical to the majority, but in the end it was Brown’s loss that clinched Republican control while Tester’s race was not settled until hours later. The decision in Montana left both Senate parties focused on the tight races in the remaining states that will determine how large the Republican majority will be.

Democrats did hold on to a seat in Maryland, where Angela Alsobrooks, the Prince George’s County executive, defeated former Gov. Larry Hogan, becoming the first Black woman to represent the state in the Senate. In Delaware, Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, who is also Black and a Democrat, won an open seat, giving the Senate two Black female members for the first time.

In Indiana, Rep. Jim Banks, a Republican and former leader of a conservative House faction, was easily elected to fill the vacancy left by Sen. Mike Braun, a Republican who ran for governor and won. Banks was considered a rising star in the House but decided to try to join the Senate after he lost an internal GOP election for a leadership post.

Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, who is seeking to become the Republican Senate leader, was also reelected, overcoming a Democratic challenge. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who polls had showed was in a close race with Rep. Colin Allred, a Democrat, also prevailed.

In Vermont, Sen. Bernie Sanders, the 83-year-old independent and former presidential candidate aligned with Democrats, was elected to a fourth term.

And Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc., fended off a stiff challenge from her Republican opponent, Eric Hovde, an affluent banker, earning just enough votes in a state that sided with Trump to win a third term.

Inside the winter wonderland where Walmart hatches its holiday plans

It felt like calculated chaos inside the chilly convention center where Walmart had recreated one of its Supercenter stores. It was late August in Orlando, Florida, and the retailer had flown in thousands of workers to have a look. They were zipping around, trying to take it all in.

There were dozens of lit-up Christmas trees and poinsettias, rows of Halloween candy, and racks of knit dresses and sweaters. A Minnie Mouse mascot danced around the toy section, while wacky inflatable ghosts and foxes hovered above the inflatable jack-o’-lanterns in a pumpkin patch. Along the way, Walmart workers were chowing down on samples of pulled pork and chips, Oreo cookies and ice cream.

On that sweltering day, the nation’s largest retailer was trying to set the mood for holidays that were still months off. But foremost on the agenda for the 6,700 attendees was Walmart’s slate of fall and winter events.

Beyond the festive mood, the holiday season is full of high stakes. It’s the busiest quarter of the year for most retailers, and Walmart’s preparations offer insights into consumer behavior and the state of the retail industry.

tail Federation. But that estimate includes only November and December. The holiday season no longer encompasses solely what’s purchased for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but also includes sales for the football tailgating season and Halloween.

Jen Acerra, who leads the consumer insights team at Walmart, helps the company gauge how shoppers are likely to be feeling throughout the fall and into winter. Last year, Acerra said, the retailer began to see people really starting their holiday shopping “with gusto” before Halloween.

“We’re going with it,” she said.

That shift has forced Walmart, and many other retailers, to think about what customers are willing to purchase over a longer timeline. And figuring out what shoppers want this year is proving challenging. Economists and retail analysts say consumer apprehension is hanging over holiday spending prospects — compounded, early on, by uncertainty about what the election will bring. Retailers also note that there are five fewer shopping days than last year between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“It’s just going to put a lot more pressure on the holiday season,” said Kate McShane, managing director at Goldman Sachs, who follows major retailers.

But if done correctly, a holiday quarter that drives people to a company’s stores and e-commerce channels can bode well for the entire year ahead.

“If a customer has a great holiday experience and is able to find the hot toy with similar prices as last year, or it felt like they saved a couple of bucks, that’s going to cement the loyalty,” said David Silverman, retail analyst at Fitch Ratings.

So far, Walmart executives seem to feel positive, as

they have continued to increase sales this year while department store chains like Macy’s and Kohl’s say their customers have pulled back. In part, Walmart attributes its recent success — U.S. sales were up 4.2% in the second quarter from a year earlier — to its proposition of “everyday low prices” and conveniences like faster shipping times.

“Sentiment affects what we do,” said John Furner, CEO of Walmart’s U.S. business. “Even if sentiment changes, there are still people that are feeling very good, and there are people that are not. So we try to really focus on what we can control” — customer service, hiring and execution.

In the morning, Furner and other top executives gave presentations reminding store managers of their importance and marching orders. The speakers emphasized that the company offered 7,200 rollbacks — the company’s term for discounts — in the second quarter, which was more than in the same time the year before. In the third and fourth quarters this year, the company said, it would have “close to 25% more” rollbacks in the toy department than it had the prior year.

The items often purchased for Thanksgiving dinner would cost about 3% less than the year before. And turkeys would be pre-priced, saving workers the time it would take to weigh each bird and sparing customers from waiting around for the price.

Toys are a major gift-giving category, and Walmart places a particular focus on it. Part of keeping prices low, Furner said, is making sure Walmart’s merchants select items customers are willing to buy at full price, and not having a “bunch of markdowns.”

“Managing these buys a year out like they do is science and art, because you have to try to pick where you think the customer is going to land, and then you’ve got innovation,” he said, standing near the toy aisle in the mock Supercenter. “You’ve got to place your bet, then we hold our breath for about six months. We’re right in the middle of the breath-holding period right now.”

Acerra and her consumer insights team have mapped out the mindset of shoppers during each week of the holiday selling period. Around mid-October, shoppers are starting to look for early deals. Near Thanksgiving, they are feeling stress from getting ready for family gatherings. Then comes Black Friday, the start of the frenzied push to the finish line.

“There also is a little bit of the dread,” Acerra said. “There’s the dread of the long lines to get the product that I want, or the stress of having to work to find what I need with the time that I’ve got. There’s ups and downs that come with it, and we need to be ready for however the customer shows up, whether it’s showing up in our stores, interacting with our associates or when they’re shopping online.”

Stocks surge to record highs as Trump returns to presidency

U.S. stocks soared to record highs on Wednesday after Republican Donald Trump won the 2024 U.S. presidential election in a stunning comeback four years after he was voted out of the White House.

The Dow Industrials, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite all hit record highs with investors expecting lower taxes, deregulation and a U.S. president who is not shy to weigh in on everything from the stock market to the dollar, although fresh tariffs could bring challenges in the form of a higher deficit and inflation.

The Republican’s win powered a rally in so-called “Trump trades,” sending U.S. Treasury yields sharply higher. Bitcoin hit a record high of over $75,000 and the dollar was on track for its biggest one-day percentage gain since September 2022.

Polls indicated a very tight race, with some concern the process could be drawn out before a victor was declared.

“The fact that we got a clean result, there’s not going to be any messy contesting or court cases or whatever it might have been, is a relief to markets,” said Ross Mayfield, investment strategy analyst at Baird in Louisville, Kentucky.

“So that’s kind of like super-charging the classic Trump trade that we saw in 2016 as well.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1,450.11 points, or 3.43%, to 43,671.12, the S&P 500 advanced 138.27 points, or 2.39%, to 5,920.87 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 514.26 points, or 2.78%, at 18,953.43.

Both the Dow and S&P 500 were on track for their biggest one-day percentage gains since November 2022, with the Nasdaq poised for its biggest daily climb since August.

Financials, up nearly 6%, were the best performing of the 11 major S&P 500 sectors. Banks, expected to benefit from loosening regulations under Trump, powered the gains, with the S&P 500 bank index up about 10%, its biggest daily jump in two years.

The small-cap Russell 2000 rallied more than 5% to a three-year high, with the domestically concentrated stocks seen as likely to benefit from easier regulations, lower taxes and less exposure to import tariffs. However, rising Treasury yields could hurt smaller companies, which tend to rely heavily on borrowing and are more sensitive to higher interest rates.

The CBOE Volatility Index , also known as Wall Street’s “Fear Gauge,” dropped more than 4 points to 16.37 after touching a six-week low of 15.44.

The rate-sensitive real estate and utilities sectors were among the day’s few decliners as investors assessed the chances of Trump’s policies boosting inflation and altering the Federal Reserve’s path of interest rates, which has been a key component of Wall Street’s recent rally.

The central bank is widely expected to ease the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points at its policy-setting meeting ending on Thursday. However, traders have begun to trim bets for a cut in December and the number of

reductions expected next year, according to CME’s FedWatch Tool.

Stocks viewed as likely to perform well under a second Trump term also advanced, with Trump Media & Technology Group up about 3% while Tesla leapt about 14% as CEO Elon Musk has supported Trump in his electoral campaign.

Strong gains were also made by shares of cryptocurrency companies, energy firms and prison operators, while renewable energy shares fell.

Markets were also eyeing whether the Republican Party could maintain a majority in the House of Representatives after gaining control of the U.S. Senate,

which would lead to less opposition to a Trump agenda.

Both stock futures and Treasury yields jumped immediately on unfolding result, the seeming clarity of which was a relief to some who feared days or even weeks of political and legal wrangling over contested votes.

Small cap stocks captured by the Russell 2000 have so far proven the biggest equity index winners - soaring almost 6% ahead of Wednesday’s bell.

Four more years of unpredictability? The world prepares for Trump’s return.

With Donald Trump’s sweeping election victory Tuesday, the world is now preparing for another four years of unpredictability and “America First” protectionism that could reset the ground rules of the global economy, empower autocrats and erase the assurance of U.S. protection for democratic partners.

Despite a lack of substantive foreign policy debate in the campaign, Trump has made several statements that — if turned into policy — would transform America’s relationship with both allies and adversaries. He has pledged to end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours, a promise many assume amounts to the withdrawal of U.S. aid for Ukraine, which would benefit Russia.

More broadly, he has made clear that he intends to make the world’s most powerful country more isolationist, more combative with tariffs, more openly hostile to immigrants, more demanding of its security partners, and less engaged on global challenges such as climate change.

Many believe the impacts could be greater than anything seen since the start of the Cold War.

“It accelerates the already deep trend of an America looking inward,” said James Curran, a professor of modern history at the University of Sydney. “Allies are going to have to save the multilateral furniture while it’s still around — they have to hope that America buys back in.”

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani of Italy told Sky News he believed Trump had “a natural sympathy for Italy.” He said he was “convinced that we will work well with the tycoon’s new administration.”

In Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday that there would be “good relations” with the United States, despite Trump’s recent threats to impose mammoth tariffs on her country. “There is no reason to worry,” she said. “Mexico always comes out ahead.”

In Kenya, Ndindi Nyoro, a lawmaker with President William Ruto’s governing coalition, said he thought Trump’s economic policies would be better for African countries, many of which are struggling with growing inflation and crushing debt.

“Republican policies have always been better for Africa & the Global South,” Nyoro wrote on Facebook.

ing that as the world’s most populous nation and fifth largest economy, it would still be courted as a counterweight to China.

Bracing for a return to transactional diplomacy

The extremes of what Trump campaigned on — from sky-high tariffs against foreign products, to mass deportations and stiff resistance to wars and alliances deemed too messy or costly — have already put many nations on edge.

China, with its own economy in the doldrums, faces the likelihood of much broader, and higher tariffs than those already applied during Trump’s first term and continued by President Joe Biden. Shi Yinhong, an international relations professor at Renmin University in Beijing, said a second Trump presidency would “inevitably diminish global trust and respect for the United States.”

Few of China’s neighbors, wary of Beijing, see cause for celebration in Trump’s victory.

South Korea and Japan expect to be pressured into paying more to have U.S. troops based in their countries. Trump has pledged to make South Korea pay $10 billion annually. South Korea currently pays a little over $1 billion.

Vietnam, which has seen its trade imbalance with the United States surge as manu-

facturers move from China to avoid tariffs, could face retaliatory tariffs like those Trump has threatened to impose on Mexico.

Fears of a less secure world

Some diplomats in Asia have said that with Trump in power, they also expect China to intensify pressure on Taiwan, if not invade the self-governing island it claims as its territory. In their view, China may calculate that Trump would not go to war for a democracy that he has accused of “stealing” the microchip industry from the United States.

For Ukraine, Trump’s return means a fog of additional danger. His claim that he will be able to broker an end to the war immediately along with his warm relations with President Vladimir Putin of Russia have fueled worries that he would force the Ukrainians into a bad deal by cutting off U.S. military support.

In Russia, there were hints of glee over Trump’s victory, even as the Kremlin held off on offering immediate congratulations. One of Putin’s top lieutenants, Dmitry Medvedev, said Wednesday that Trump was preferable for his cold, corporate acumen.

Trump, Medvedev said, “dislikes spending money on various hangers-on,” referring to Ukraine’s president.

Anxiety and unease among democratic partners

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine said last week that he “understands all the risks” of a Trump victory. But on Wednesday he wrote on the social platform X that he appreciated “President Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs.”

But many of Ukraine’s supporters in the region are “woefully unprepared for a return of Trump,” said Georgina Wright, a European politics expert at the Montaigne Institute in Paris. Analysts and officials on the Continent expect a trade war, a bigger bill for NATO and military aid from Washington, a Trumpencouraged spread of anti-democratic populism, and a greater risk of Russia widening its territorial ambitions.

Trump has implied that he would not abide by the NATO article requiring collective defense, which kept Europe mostly peaceful and democratic for decades. At one point during his run for office, he said he would “encourage” Russia “to do whatever the hell they want” to countries that had not paid sufficient money to the alliance.

While publicly congratulating Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz huddled Wednesday morning to discuss European strategy toward a transactional president

whose country not only is a strategic security ally, but remains Europe’s biggest trade partner. “We will work towards a more united, stronger, more sovereign Europe in this new context,” Macron said on X.

For some, a welcome change

And yet, in some countries, Trump’s testosterone-fueled approach has led to a measure of hope.

In the Middle East, the United States has largely been seen as ineffective — unable to end the cycle of conflict or even forge a solid cease-fire. Trump, to some, represents the potential for a new way forward, seen by many in the region as strongly pro-Israel but also as a dealmaker.

The far right in Israel was fist-pumping a Trump victory even before the last polls had closed, figuring that he could be persuaded to side with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in any attempt to end the wars in the Gaza Strip and against Iran’s proxies in the region. When Trump’s win looked inevitable early Wednesday, Itamar Ben-Gvir, the ultranationalist minister of national security in Israel, posted a festive “Yesssss” on social media.

Palestinians condemned U.S. support for the wars, expressing a mix of fear and dreams for what a new administration might bring. Hamas, in a statement, said, “Palestinians look forward to an immediate cessation of the aggression against our people.”

In Lebanon and among some of its Arab neighbors, a second Trump term seemed to be cautiously welcomed.

“He’s crazy, but at least he’s strong,” said Anthony Samrani, the editor-in-chief of the Lebanese daily L’Orient-Le Jour, summing up what he called the prevailing mindset toward Trump in the Middle East.

Among the most enthusiastic about Trump’s win was Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary, who has suppressed dissent to create an ethnocentric, illiberal democracy in his country. He congratulated Trump on Wednesday for “his enormous win” that he called “a much needed victory for the world!”

Impact on immigration

The widest-ranging and perhaps most immediate impact of Trump’s victory on the world may involve immigration.

He has promised that among his first acts in office would be mass deportations for millions of immigrants in the United States illegally. Critics worry that within weeks, that could mean daily planeloads of returnees to not just Mexico, but also India, El Salvador and the Philippines.

Astory in chess lore involves the great Danish-Jewish player Aron Nimzowitsch, who, at a tournament in the mid-1920s, found himself struggling against the German master Friedrich Sämisch. Infuriated at the thought of losing to an opponent he considered inferior, Nimzowitsch jumped on the table and shouted, “To this idiot I must lose?”

It’s a thought that must have crossed the minds of more than a few liberal pundits and Democratic eminences late Tuesday, as Kamala Harris’ hopes for winning the presidency began suddenly to fade.

How, indeed, did Democrats lose so badly, considering how they saw Donald Trump — a twice-impeached former president, a felon, a fascist, a bigot, a buffoon, a demented old man, an object of nonstop late-night mockery and incessant moral condemnation? The theory that many Democrats will be tempted to adopt is that a nation prone to racism, sexism, xenophobia and rank stupidity fell prey to the type of demagoguery that once beguiled Germany into electing Adolf Hitler.

It’s a theory that has a lot of explanatory power — though only of an unwitting sort. The broad inability of liberals to understand Trump’s political appeal except in terms flattering to their beliefs is itself part of the explanation for his historic, and entirely avoidable, comeback.

deliver a must-win state like Pennsylvania or Michigan; her inability to separate herself from President Joe Biden; her foolish designation of Trump as a fascist, which, by implication, suggested his supporters were themselves quasi-fascist; her overreliance on celebrity surrogates as she struggled to articulate a compelling rationale for her candidacy; her failure to forthrightly repudiate some of the more radical positions she took as a candidate in 2019, other than by relying on stock expressions like “My values haven’t changed.”

There was also the larger error of anointing Harris without political competition — an insult to the democratic process that handed the nomination to a candidate who, as some of us warned at the time, was exceptionally weak. That, in turn, came about because Democrats failed to take Biden’s obvious mental decline seriously until June’s debate debacle (and then allowed him to cling to the nomination for a few weeks more), making it difficult to hold even a truncated mini-primary.

But these mistakes of calculation lived within three larger mistakes of worldview. First, the conviction among many liberals that things were pretty much fine, if not downright great, in Biden’s America — and that anyone who didn’t think that way was either a right-wing misinformer or a dupe. Second, the refusal to see how profoundly distasteful so much of modern liberalism has become to so much of America. Third, the insistence that the only appropriate form of politics when it comes to Trump is the politics of Resistance — capital R.

Regarding the first, I’ve lost track of the number of times liberal pundits have attempted to steer readers to arcane data from the St. Louis Federal Reserve to explain why Americans should stop freaking out over sharply higher prices of consumer goods or the rising financing costs on their homes and cars. Or insisted there was no migration crisis at the southern border. Or averred that Biden was sharp as a tack and that anyone who suggested otherwise was a jerk.

Yet when Americans saw and experienced things otherwise (as extensive survey data showed they did) the characteristic liberal response was to treat the complaints not only as baseless but also as immoral. The effect was to insult voters while leaving Democrats blind to the legitimacy of the issues. You could see this every time Harris mentioned, in answer to questions about the border, that she had prosecuted transnational criminal gangs: Her answer was nonresponsive to the central complaint that there was a migration crisis straining hundreds of communities, irrespective of whether the migrants committed crimes.

The dismissiveness with which liberals treated these concerns was part of something else: dismissiveness toward the moral objections many Americans have to various progressive causes. Concerned about gender transitions for children or about biological males playing on girls’ sports teams? You’re a transphobe. Dismayed by tedious, mandatory and frequently counterproductive diversity, equity and inclusion seminars that treat white skin as almost inherently problematic? You’re racist. Irritated by new terminology that is supposed to be more inclusive but feels as if it’s borrowing a

The Democratic Party at its best stands for fairness and freedom. But the politics of today’s left is heavy on social engineering according to group identity. It also, increasingly, stands for the forcible imposition of bizarre cultural norms on hundreds of millions of Americans who want to live and let live but don’t like being told how to speak or what to think. Too many liberals forgot this, which explains how a figure like Trump, with his boisterous and transgressive disdain for liberal pieties, could be reelected to the presidency.

Last, liberals thought that the best way to stop Trump was to treat him not as a normal, if obnoxious, political figure with bad policy ideas but as a mortal threat to democracy itself. Whether or not he is such a threat, this style of opposition led Democrats astray. It goaded them into their own form of antidemocratic politics — using the courts to try to get Trump’s name struck from the ballot in Colorado or trying to put him in prison on hard-to-follow charges. It distracted them from the task of developing and articulating superior policy responses to the valid public concerns he was addressing. And it made liberals seem hyperbolic, if not hysterical, particularly since the country had already survived one Trump presidency more or less intact.

I voted reluctantly for Harris because of my fears for what a second Trump term might bring — in Ukraine, our trade policy, civic life, the moral health of the conservative movement writ large. Right now, my larger fear is that liberals lack the introspection to see where they went wrong, the discipline to do better next time and the humility to change.

Antonio Martínez Ocasio, conocido como Bad Bunny, se pronunció el miércoles luego de los resultados de las elecciones en Puerto Rico, en las que había apoyado abiertamente al candidato Juan Dalmau y la Alianza de País. A través de sus redes sociales, el cantante compartió sus sentimientos de orgullo, preocupación y esperanza por el futuro de la isla.

“Hoy más que nunca me siento orgulloso de quien soy, de mis acciones y del amor que le tengo a mi tierra. Se vale estar triste, se vale sentirse desanimado pues entiendo la frustración que sentimos muchos”, expresó Bad Bunny. El artista reconoció la preocupación que comparten muchos puertorriqueños sobre el futuro de Puerto Rico y los desafíos que podría enfrentar en los próximos años.

Bad Bunny, quien había participado activamente en la campaña a favor de Dalmau y la Alianza de País, aseguró que continuará expresándose y luchando por un mejor Puerto Rico. “Yo aún sigo con esperanza porque cada vez son más los que despiertan y se unen a quienes sueñan y luchan por un mejor Puerto Rico. Aquí seguimos, no nos quitamos. Con la frente en alto y sobre todo con la conciencia tranquila”, afirmó.

El exponente de música urbana hizo un llamado a seguir educando y luchando por el país que los puertorriqueños merecen. “Gente, nada fue en vano. Con amor y paciencia se educa. Aquí seguiremos alzando nuestra voz y defendiendo nuestra tierra. Gobierne quien gobierne, yo siempre he estado y estaré a la disposición y listo para aportar a mi país como siempre he hecho”, manifestó.

Bad Bunny también enfatizó la importancia de

la fiscalización ciudadana y la defensa de los intereses del pueblo. “Gobierne quien gobierne, estaremos atentos fiscalizando y velando porque las cosas se hagan bien y no esperaremos cuatro años para enfrentar a cualquiera que lo haga mal. Al pueblo nos toca defender lo nuestro”, declaró.

El cantante concluyó su mensaje reiterando su amor por Puerto Rico y su compromiso con la isla. “Puerto Rico TE AMO. Seguimos aquí, no nos quitamos”, finalizó.

Quincy Jones, the maestro of the recording studio

“Quincy called me.”

That is the opening line of the best stories told by some of the best musicians in the world over the last half-century or so, as they recount being recruited for recording sessions by Quincy Jones, the super-producer whose work was often as much a matter of casting as of capturing sounds on tape.

Eddie Van Halen got the call one day in 1982, to add a pyrotechnic guitar solo to Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.” He declined credit for it, but after Jackson’s death in 2009, Van Halen said that session was one of the “fondest memories in my career.”

Greg Phillinganes, the synthesizer virtuoso who began his career with Stevie Wonder, got many such calls as an in-demand session player, working on Jones-helmed albums by Jackson, Donna Summer and James Ingram, among others.

“By virtue of getting a call,” Phillinganes recalled this week, “that was the endorsement that you were worthy of being there” — an induction into an elite circle that included both big stars and supremely skilled but lesserknown musicians, each chosen with intention by Jones for what they could bring to a project.

Jones, who died on Sunday at 91, was the master of a nearly vanished mode of record-making that relied on groups of talented musicians working under the finely attuned ear of a producer. For decades, he had many of the pop world’s best players on call, and — in what could be a career-making enlistment or just the umpteenth studio gig — would hire them to spice up a track with a guitar lick, or smooth its contours with a synthesizer part, or ground it with just the right beat.

That system of producers, studio players and engineers working together in a big room, once central to the pop industry, has been gradually dismantled through the rise of home recording and increasingly sophisticated technology, and by shrunken label budgets. But in Jones it may have had its greatest exponent.

In his memoir, “Q” (2001), Jones expended far more ink on the preparations for Jackson’s 1979 album “Off the Wall” — especially choosing studio personnel — than in

describing its actual recording.

“I’ve always been blessed to work with some of the best in the business,” Jones wrote, after running down the list of players, “and these guys were not only like a family of friends but like my own musical mafia: every one was a black-belt master in his own category.”

A glance through the credits on Jones’ albums across the decades reveals a kind of rotating hall-of-fame roster of studio players.

From the 1960s into the early ’70s, it was filled with jazz luminaries like Ray Brown, Toots Thielemans and Herbie Hancock. By the ’80s, he was leaning on rock players; “Thriller” features four members of Toto, most prominently its drummer, Jeff Porcaro, and guitarist Steve Lukather.

Jones was well into his career before he ever called himself a producer. Born in 1933, he played trumpet in Lionel Hampton’s touring jazz band in the early ’50s, and studied classical composition in Paris under Nadia Boulanger, whose other students included Aaron Copland and Philip Glass. It was only in 1963, Jones wrote, when he recorded Lesley Gore’s pop classic “It’s My Party” as an executive at Mercury Records, that he truly learned the job of a producer.

“Before then,” Jones wrote, “I never knew what a producer was or did.”

In truth, he had already been involved in

some fantastic albums by then, arranging gorgeous vocal jazz with Helen Merrill and hot big-band tunes on his friend Ray Charles’ LP “Genius + Soul = Jazz.”

By the 1970s, Jones was firmly established as a pop producer, and his history in jazz and film scoring gave him extensive contacts, and deep respect, among musicians.

“Quincy was the ultimate alchemist,” Phillinganes said. “He understood the strengths and the sensibilities of the musicians he hired. He understood who could do what. And he helped to foster that and bring out the best of everyone that worked with him.”

That process was exacting but could still leave room for serendipity. Lukather first got the call at age 23, to contribute guitar to Jones’ solo album “The Dude” (1981). In an interview, he said that Jones gave him a chord chart for the ballad “Just Once” — Ingram, its singer, was another newcomer in “Q” world then — but let him craft his own part, giving feedback along the way.

Yet at each session, it was clear to every-

one in the room who was in charge. “Quincy was the general,” vocal arranger Tom Bahler says in “The Greatest Night in Pop,” the 2024 documentary about the sessions for “We Are the World,” the 1985 charity single that Jones produced.

In footage from that session, Jones stands sternly at the recording console, calmly directing more than 30 of the biggest stars of the era — among them Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Jackson, Kenny Rogers and Cyndi Lauper — as they sing the song’s chorus, watching Jones intently for cues and affirmation.

Sometimes the job involved reassuring the world’s most beloved recording artists that their work was good enough to meet the standards of Quincy Jones. For “We Are the World,” Dylan struggled at the mic on his solo part. “I don’t think that’s any good at all,” he complains at one point.

Jones takes off his headphones and walks over. “You killed it,” the producer tells him.

“If you say so,” Dylan replies with a laugh, and they hug.

Este caso trata sobre Incumplimiento de Contrato y Cobro de Dinero en que la parte demandante solicita que se condene al demandado a pagar al 5 de julio de 2024 la cantidad de $25,876.91 de principal, más intereses acumulados a razón del 11.15% y los que se acumulen hasta el total y completo pago de la deuda, más cargos por demora y los que se acumulen hasta su total y completo pago, más una suma equivalente al 5% del total adeudado para honorarios de abogados según pactado. NBA’s ‘Uncle Brigade’ won’t stop fighting. Treasure it.

but the changing of the guard in the NBA is happening. Nikola Jokic sparked the transition. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Luka Doncic. Anthony Edwards. Victor Wembanyama. The league will be theirs. Their names on the marquee. Their presence drawing the masses. Their legacies the subject of debates.

It should have already happened, if not for the Uncle Brigade: LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Damian Lillard, Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler, when healthy. The NBA has never seen this many OGs still cooking, still working the grill in sandals with socks on.

It’s a testament to the advances in kinesiology, technology and hoopology. More than anything, though, it’s an illustration of their dedication to their craft and how much they love the game. They are magnificently maniacal — real hoopers.

Some of them have maintained impeccable shape and can run with this new breed of stars. Some of them mock modern training culture with old-school grit, needing a foam roller and just a couple of months to get in shape.

Kevin Durant, the Phoenix Suns forward, finished with 31 points in a recent win against the Dallas Mavericks, joining the 29,000 points club. Afterward, he was asked about the milestone.

“It speaks to so many people that helped me out,” he said in his on-court interview. “So many people that got in the gym with me. Encouraged me. Sent me texts after bad games. Took time out of their life to come watch me play and be invested in my career. It’s all about them.”

But then he made a reference to more feats to come because, while Durant respects the history of the game deeply, he refuses to be regarded as some finished star collecting pats on the back in his final days in the NBA. He does not like the tone of those end-ofcareer reflection questions. The end is not near. So he punctuated his appreciation with a pledge: “I’ve got more to do.”

Then he dropped 30 points in a home win last week against the Los Angeles Lakers.

If Durant, 36, has a moderately good

year by his standards, he will score upward of 1,500 points this season. Along the way, he will pass Moses Malone and Julius Erving, and move into eighth place on the career scoring list, which includes players from the American Basketball Association. He passed Shaquille O’Neal last season to reach the top 10. Anything over 2,000 points this season, and Durant will be stalking Wilt Chamberlain at No. 7.

Of the four legends mentioned, guess who totaled the most points at age 36? O’Neal at 1,333, edging Malone’s 1,279. Erving and Chamberlain were in their final season at age 36, and barely scored more than 1,000 points.

Meanwhile, saying Durant could average 25 points a game is a cold take. That’s why Durant is out here mentioning legendary milestones as if he’s rounding third base. He knows he is still among the best, and he will have more milestones and legends to overtake. So the 11th-oldest player in the NBA, who is averaging 40 minutes a game so far, can look past 29,000 points as if it were a point guard defending him.

Yeah, this era of old heads is different,

Just about all of them thrive on elite skill, the experience they garnered growing up in the league, watching and battling Kobe Bryant, and the heart they made it here with. They all share a toughness that defines their generation. They played outside. They drank water out of hoses and grubbed at the food court in the mall. They grew up playing hoop outside, under summer heat on concrete courts. Their ligaments and muscles have been fortified by night club calisthenics, THC and compression fabric.

The next generation will have to pry the superstar scepters from their Social Security grips.

LeBron turned 30 in the 2014-15 season. Before that season, the NBA had a player average 25 points or more 334 times over 68 seasons. Of those, 18 were accomplished by players ages 33 or older. So 5.4% of the best scorers were in past-prime ages.

But since and including the season James turned 30, a player has averaged at least 25 points per game 128 times over 10 seasons — 13 of them by players 33 and older. Up to 10.2%. Nearly double the rate.

Last year, eight players in their 30s averaged 23 or more. It was the second season in a row that happened, which broke the previous record of seven in 2020-21. Before that, the most was six players, twice.

Yes, they are getting paid crazy figures. It’s easy to stick around when the standard midlevel exception is $12 million, which is more than what Barkley ever made in an NBA season. But these veterans who have lapped the field aren’t making the midlevel. They’re good enough to command the big salaries. And anyone who thinks it’s just about the money for them is missing it, again.

Watch them play. This is a different kind of hard-core, the kind not romanticized in the same way clotheslines were in the 1980s. The kind they were flamed for not having because of load management allegations and friendships.

But you know what’s tough? They’re still here, killing it, as magnetic as ever. Many of them do not have a real shot at a championship. They are just in it for the bag and the glory. Flexing their supremacy. Competing because they can.

Don’t miss what’s happening. Don’t take for granted how some of the best players we’ve ever seen have packed two lifetimes in their careers. The game has changed. The world has changed. Yet, their greatness and showmanship have survived it all. They have been consistently excellent, reliably entertaining.

Eventually, they will be ushered off the main stage, if they do not leave first. The rightful heirs will take over.

And we can only hope the players of the new generation give as much of themselves as the aging stars, that the future faces of the NBA learn a valuable lesson as they pry away the scepters: It takes greatness to get to the top, but staying there requires something different. They’ve got more to do.
