Head of La Fondita de Jesús: Candidates must prioritize affordable housing

Candidates for governor must include as a priority an action plan to facilitate affordable housing as a preventive measure to avoid the growing homelessness crisis in Puerto Rico, La Fondita de Jesús Executive Director Josué Maysonet Colón said Thursday.

In the framework of the celebration of the World Homeless Day, Maysonet stated that housing should be seen as a basic human right and that to solve the problems of homeless people, their physical and mental health must also be addressed.

According to the 2024 Count, in a single day 2,096 homeless people were counted and it is estimated that the total number is around 5,000 homeless people in Puerto Rico.

“The most worrying thing is that almost 25 percent of these people have lived on the streets for more than a year and, what is worse, almost 60 percent are facing homelessness for the first time,” Maysonet Colón said.

La Fondita de Jesús is one of the organizations working on the front line against the homelessness crisis on the island.

The situation is aggravated by a significant increase in homeless women, a phenomenon that has been growing in recent years.

“It is heartbreaking to see how young people and older adults, the most vulnerable, are the ones who suffer the most,” Maysonet Colón said. “And now, more women are becoming homeless, an alarming trend that we must urgently address.”

Another worrying situation is that more and more homeless people are arriving on the island from the United States because they understand that it is easier for them to find housing here, and in particular from Florida, where since Oct. 1, sleeping on the streets has been prohibited with the possibility of arrest and even jail. If the trend continues, homelessness on the island will worsen, Maysonet Colón noted.

He said not only is it necessary to bring attention to a crisis that is already visible, but structural solutions that prevent more people from falling into this situation also must be developed.

“The only way to stop this cycle is to create affordable housing for those who are already on the streets and for those who are at risk of losing their homes,” Maysonet Colón stressed. “Housing should not be seen as a luxury, but as a basic human right.”

The leader of La Fondita added that it is not enough to offer a roof.

“Access to physical and mental health services is essential for those who have been victims of the harsh reality of homelessness,” he said. “Many of those who live on the streets suffer from chronic illnesses and untreated mental health problems. They can’t get off the streets without adequate resources to address these needs.”

World Homeless Day is a reminder that prevention is key.

“No one is exempt from a crisis that leads them to lose their home. It can happen to anyone,” Maysonet Colón warned. “That is why we call on our leaders to act responsibly and to dedicate funds and public policies to resolve this situation. We cannot afford to continue looking the other way.”

Rep. Méndez: Poll shows an NPP victory

The New Progressive Party (NPP) minority leader in the island House of Representatives, Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez, said Thursday that the numbers from a major island poll reflect what is seen on the street -- overwhelming support for NPP gubernatorial candidate Jenniffer González Colón.

“Every survey is an evaluation mechanism; however, the data reflected in the El Nuevo Día survey supports our position, that the candidacy of Jenniffer González consolidates our party and expands the electoral base considerably,” Méndez said. “The resident commissioner has demonstrated a unique ability to unite the base and attract new voters, an essential factor in the growth of the NPP.”

“It is important to note that the NPP’s campaign for an integrated vote has been successful,” he added. “We have

89% of our people focused on voting for Jenniffer and the candidates from La Palma; but there is more, much more.”

Méndez reiterated that the poll confirms that González Colón has extended support for the NPP beyond its traditional base.

“The numbers reflect that González has a solid 18% support over her closest competitor among students in higher grades, the future of Puerto Rico,” he said. “Meanwhile, the 9% lead in the vote of people in the [San Juan] metropolitan area breaks another myth of the opposition.”

“We cannot be complacent,” Méndez said. “This election is a choice between permanent union with the United States and American citizenship, two things that only statehood guarantees, and those who seek to separate us from our nation, who have always admired dictators and those who hide their electoral principles with the sole intention of winning a few votes.”

Social Security to increase 2.5% in PR & mainland US

Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments will increase by 2.5% in 2025 for more than 72.5 million people in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, the Social Security Administration announced Thursday. On average, Social Security retirement benefits will increase by more than $50 a month starting in January.

Over the past decade, the average cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase has been about 2.6%. In 2024, the COLA was 3.2%.

Nearly 68 million Social Security beneficiaries will see a 2.5% COLA adjustment starting in January. The increase in payments for almost 7.5 million SSI

beneficiaries will begin on December 31 of this year. Some people receive both Social Security and SSI benefits.

“Social Security benefits and SSI payments will increase in 2025, and this will help millions of people keep up with expenses as inflation has begun to decline,” Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley said.

Some of the other adjustments that take effect in January of each year are based on rising average wages. Based on that increase, the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security tax (taxable maximum) will increase from $168,600 to $176,100.

In early December, Social Security will begin notifying people by mail about their new benefit amount.

Request for proposals goes out for amphibian study

The island Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) announced Thursday the opening of requests for proposals (RFP) to evaluate the biodiversity and conservation of amphibians in Puerto Rico.

The project seeks to identify and manage the conservation of the animals on the archipelago including the offshore islands of Mona, Desecheo, Vieques and Culebra. “The proposal includes the monitoring

of bioacoustics, creation of a population distribution map and recommendations for the better management of the species for better conservation,” Roberto Méndez, the DNER interim secretary, said in a written statement.

The deadline for sending the proposal is Oct. 25 and must be sent to rlrivera@drna. pr.gov. The study uses 400 points selected and will last for one year.

Acclaimed TV host Eddie Miró dies at 89

Eddie Miró, one of the most beloved figures of Puerto Rican television, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 89. Known for his charisma and talent, Miró left an indelible mark on the history of Puerto Rican entertainment.

“At the time of his death he was accompanied by his wife, daughters and grandchildren,” the Miró Medina family said in a written statement. “It is a difficult reality but we accept it with resignation. We deeply appreciate the affection and admiration that has always been shown to him.”

The family extended their sincere gratitude to the medical team in the Neurointensive and Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MICU 1), as well as to the nurses, security and maintenance staff, for their tireless dedication throughout the entire process.

Miró was hospitalized several weeks ago after suffering a fall.

Miró was born on March 25, 1935, in Humacao, but grew up in Santurce. He studied at Central High and graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, with a degree in agronomy, but became Telemundo Puerto Rico’s most acclaimed television presenter.

figures such as Norma Candal and Awilda Carbia -- and “Noche de Gala,” where he engaged for 27 years with internationally renowned stars such as Raphael, Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine, Julio Iglesias, Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri, José José, Marco Antonio Muñiz, The Fania All Stars, Sandro de América, Rubén Blades, Johnny Ventura, Héctor Lavoe, Menudo, Iris Chacón, Isabel Pantoja and Roberto Carlos, among many others.

In the 1980s, Miró was the host of the variety show “Salsa Saturday Night,” dedicated to the musical genre.

He also wrote scripts for the successful films “El Alcalde de Machuchal,” “El Jíbaro Millonario” and “El Curandero del Pueblo,” and acted in them. He also worked on screen for producers Oscar and Carlos Sacco in “Súper Sábados,” which aired on the entire Telemundo network.

Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón, San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo and Puerto Rico Independence Party gubernatorial candidate Juan Dalmau Ramírez all expressed their condolences.

“In this moment of pain, I want to express my most profound condolences to the family, friends and acquaintances of the departed Eddie Miró,” González Colón said.

“We all laughed and enjoyed his charisma, unique style, legacy and contribution to Puerto Rican popular television culture, which will live in each one of us,” she added. “Rest in peace Eddie Miró.”

“With great pain I received the news of the departure from the earthly plane of the beloved Eddie Miró,” Romero Lugo said. “His human warmth and sense of humor accompanied an entire people through generations from his diverse facets, converting him into a beloved and respected icon.”

“Rest in Peace, the man with the ‘eternal smile,’ Eddie Miró,” Dalmau Ramírez said. “My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, who I had the honor to work with.”

More than 2,479 streets repaved in San Juan to date

Since the Municipality of San Juan’s “Tus Calles Al Día” program began in October 2021, with an investment of over $90.5 million, over a million tons of asphalt have been deposited, resulting in more than 2,479 streets fully repaved throughout the municipality.

Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo said Thursday that the third phase of the project “continues with repair work to add some 584 roads in the coming weeks.”

“Certainly, this is one of the most aggressive and ambitious programs that we have undertaken under my administration to achieve the repair and improvement of roads in San Juan,” he said.

The program, which was divided into three phases, has impacted over 851.58 miles in 115 communities and sectors of San Juan.

In recent weeks, work has begun in areas such as Montehiedra, the 2nd Extension of Country Club, Mileaville-García and Domenech Avenue. During this week, the Tus Calles Al Día program will reach Paseo del Prado, Paseo Sereno, Floral Park, Caminos de Cupey and Comunidad Hoyo.

Meanwhile, work will begin this month on streets in La

Colectora, Villa Capri, El Vedado, Urb. Roosevelt, Club Manor, Venezuela and Capetillo.

The mayor added that “since I took over the municipal administration of San Juan, working to improve the conditions of our streets, avenues and municipal roads has been one of the priorities in terms of infrastructure.”

“Taking care of the streets of the people of San Juan was a commitment I made before the 2020 elections and I am pleased to announce that we are managing to fulfill it,” Romero Lugo said.

Although the Tus Calles Al Día program was designed to repair municipal roads, “we have adopted state areas because we recognize the importance of improvements being in line with our vision of the city and for this it is necessary to leave the territorial limits and cover the needs of San Juan,” the mayor stressed.

The third phase of the program will continue with repaving works in the urban area of Río Piedras and the Hill Mansion and Litheda neighborhoods, to name a few.

The first phase culminated with an investment of more than $32 million and 969 streets were repaired with 244,161.95 tons of asphalt deposited.

In the second phase, over $32 million was invested, in

which 621,279.67 tons of asphalt were laid on 890 streets. In the third phase, some 584 streets will be added with an investment of over $24 million.

The repaving program, which was divided into three phases, has impacted over 851.58 miles in 115 communities and sectors of San Juan.

Hurricane Milton kills at least 7, many far from landfall

Florida residents encountered a car thrown the length of a football field, floodwaters reaching up to their doorknobs and flattened homes all along the coast as Hurricane Milton’s destruction across the state came into fuller view Thursday.

At least seven people were killed by the hurricane, and low-lying coastal neighborhoods were swallowed by flooding. Although the densely populated Tampa Bay area escaped devastating storm surge, the storm ripped the roof off Tropicana Field and slammed a tower crane into a building in downtown St. Petersburg.

Here’s what we’re covering:

— Lifesaving warnings: Efforts to get people to follow evacuation orders and warnings appear to have worked. President Joe Biden said more than 80,000 Floridians safely sheltered from the storm. The threat of Milton had prompted one of the largest evacuations in the state’s history.

— Widespread impact: More than 3.1 million customers were without power in Florida on Thursday afternoon. In some Gulf Coast counties, the storm knocked out electricity to more than 80% of customers.

— Tornado damage: Milton spawned powerful tornadoes far from where it came ashore, damaging more than 100 structures across the state. In St. Lucie County, local officials said that five people had been killed by

tornadoes.

— Back out to sea: Milton, which came ashore Wednesday evening near Sarasota as a Category 3 hurricane, crossed the Florida Peninsula without losing hurricane strength. As of Thursday afternoon, the storm was in the Atlantic Ocean, north of the Bahamas.

— Help from outside: The Biden administration has sent 1,000 search and rescue workers to Florida to help in the storm’s aftermath, according to the White House, along with 20 million meals and 40 million liters of water. At least 20 other states also sent assistance.

More than 3 million are without power in Florida

More than 3.2 million customers in Florida were without power early Thursday because of Hurricane Milton, according to poweroutage.us, which tracks data from utility companies.

The storm’s powerful winds knocked down power lines and spread debris, making repairs difficult as work crews faced a backlog of calls for assistance.

Hardee County, about 40 miles inland from where the storm made landfall, appeared to be the hardest hit, with 98% of customers in the county without power.

In all, more than 1 in 4 customers of energy companies across the state were without power as of 6 a.m. Eastern.

The Hardee County sheriff’s office said late Wednesday that the county was “experiencing widespread power outages and downed debris.” It warned people to “remain

sheltered in place as the storm has not passed.”

On Thursday morning, the sheriff’s office said: “Emergency responders are now attempting to respond to the backlog of delayed calls. Downed power lines, debris and washed-out roadways make driving conditions unsafe. Please do not drive, it is dangerous.”

As many residents and business turned to backup generators, coastal Manatee County — where more than 80% of customers were without power — warned users against placing generators indoors because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

“The invisible and odorless gas can build up in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces,” the county government said on social media. Carbon monoxide poisoning was a significant cause of death during a winter storm in Texas in 2021 that caused widespread power outages.

Energy companies typically make extensive prepara-

tions before large storms so they can restore power quickly after an outage. Even so, the risk of hurricane-induced power outages could increase by 50% in the coming decades in some areas of the United States, including Puerto Rico, because of climate change, according to a recent report.

In Polk County, in central Florida, nearly half of the roughly 380,000 electricity customers were without power Thursday morning. At least 20 emergency shelters were open there, and authorities warned that heavy rainfall could lead to possible sewer overflows.

Nearly 30,000 of Osceola County’s more than 200,000 electricity customers had no power as of 4 a.m. local time.

“Now is the time to hunker down,” Paul Womble, the county’s emergency management director, told reporters as Milton approached Polk County on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s not safe, and the strongest part of the storm is not here.”

US issues solar storm watch after large outburst from the sun

Periodically, the sun spews out gigantic eruptions of particles into the solar system. Sometimes, when the solar eruptions are aimed right at Earth, the particles may create brilliant auroras in night skies in many parts of the planet. Then there are other occasions when the battering can damage satellites, mangle GPS signals and knock out power grids.

On Wednesday, a federal center issued a space weather severe storm watch after sun-watching spacecraft observed a large solar flare emanating from a sunspot in the sun’s northern hemisphere, accompanied by an explosion of particles known as a coronal mass ejection.

“The concerning thing here is that it was right in the center of the sun,” Shawn Dahl, the service coordinator for the Space Weather Prediction Center, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said during a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

If the eruption was right in the center of the

sun, that meant at least part of it was probably aimed right at Earth. It looked big enough to cause potential disruptions. The barrage could also result in Northern and Southern Lights being visible Thursday evening, reaching much closer to the equator than usual.

This was the second such watch, which is the space weather equivalent of a hurricane watch, to be issued by the center in the past 19 years.

The first, in May, put the United States on alert for a severe solar storm that appeared to be on its way to Earth. That solar storm reached the highest level of “extreme,” but the early warning allowed electrical utilities to prepare and helped prevent major outages.

The charged particles from the latest event — protons, electrons and helium nuclei — are speeding at more than 2.5 million mph and are expected to start slamming into the Earth’s magnetic field Thursday morning Eastern time.

Dahl said the storm would most likely not be as intense as the one in May. “The difference is, the one in May, we had a series of coronal mass ejections, one of them faster

than the other,” Dahl said. “And it kind of swept everything together and just enhanced the effect.”

But the geomagnetic storm could last about 36 hours. If the storm reaches the severe level, the auroras in the Northern Hemisphere could stretch down into the middle of the United States, potentially as far south as Alabama.

The forecasts will remain largely guesswork until the waves of particles pass by two spacecraft, the NASA Advanced Composition

Explorer, or ACE, and the Deep Space Climate Observatory, or DSCOVR.

Both are about 1 million miles from Earth, providing 15 to 30 minutes of warning before the solar storms arrive at Earth. At that point, the watch might be upgraded to a warning.

In May, the center started talking with power grid operators about six hours before the storm arrived.

This time, they reached out even earlier, because the power grid, already damaged by Hurricane Helene last month, will be further thrashed as Hurricane Milton bears down on Florida.

“With all the hurricane relief efforts going on and the inbound hurricane going into Florida and across the peninsula, we thought it prudent to immediately contact them now,” Dahl said. “We don’t know the true status there, but that’s just our concern.”

Neither the May eruption nor this week’s is as severe as one known as the Carrington Event that hit Earth in 1859, disrupting telegraph stations, or another in 1989 that caused a nine-hour blackout in Quebec.

Republicans appear poised to take control of Senate, new poll shows

Control of the Senate appears likely to flip from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party this fall, as one of the nation’s most endangered Democrats, Sen. Jon Tester of Montana, trails his Republican challenger in his bid for reelection, according to a new poll from The New York Times and Siena College.

Tester, who first won election to the Senate in 2006, is winning over moderate and independent voters and running far ahead of the Democrat at the top of the ticket, Vice President Kamala Harris. But that does not appear to be enough to survive in Montana, a conservative state where former President Donald Trump is ahead by 17 percentage points and where control of the Senate hangs in the balance.

Tim Sheehy, a wealthy Republican businessperson and a former Navy SEAL who has never held public office, leads Tester 52% to 44%, the poll shows. Sheehy’s lead is a 7-point advantage without rounding.

Democrats currently hold a 51-seat Senate majority. But with Republicans already set to pick up a seat after the retirement of Sen. Joe Manchin, I-W.Va., who caucuses with Democrats, the party cannot afford to lose additional seats.

In fact, the party’s only hope is to secure a 50-50 split and to have Harris win the White House, allowing her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, to provide the crucial tiebreaking vote as vice president.

At least seven other Democratic-held Senate seats are competitive this fall, including in the presidential battlegrounds of Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Wisconsin. In late September, a series of Times/Siena surveys in four of those races, as well as in Ohio, found Democrats ahead, though narrowly in some cases.

The problem is that the Democratic Party has scarce opportunities to flip any Republican-held seats in 2024 to make up for any potential losses, such as in Montana.

The best opportunity, according to new Times/Siena polling, may be in Texas, which Democrats have long dreamed of flipping but where they have fallen well short in recent years. Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican seeking his third term, leads his Democratic challenger, Rep. Colin Allred, 48% to

44%, according to a Times/Siena poll in Texas.

And in Florida, a Times/Siena poll found that Sen. Rick Scott, the Republican incumbent, is comfortably ahead of Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, his Democratic rival, by an even wider margin, 49% to 40%.

Both Cruz and Scott lead by smaller margins in their states than Trump is ahead of Harris.

A third potentially competitive Republican-held seat has emerged in recent weeks, though the reelection bid of Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., was not included in the polls. Fischer is running against an independent, Dan Osborn, and Republicans have recently come to her campaign’s aid with advertising.

In Montana, money has been flooding the state for months. With a population of around 1.1 million, Montana is set to see more than $265 million in television spending related to the Senate race, according to AdImpact, the ad-tracking service.

Republicans have circled Tester’s race as a top priority in 2024 largely because the state has become so solidly Republican in national politics. Trump won there with 57% of the vote in 2020 — the same percentage he was pulling

in the poll.

Tester, with his flattop haircut and seven fingers — he lost three digits in a meat-grinding accident as a child — has successfully carved out a distinctive image that has long allowed him to outrun his party label and win reelection in 2012 and 2018.

This year, Republicans are hoping to make the Senate race in Montana a national partisan referendum. In the poll, 55% of likely voters said they would prefer that Republicans control the Senate, compared with only 37% who prefer Democratic control.

As of now, the poll found that Tester was winning the support of only 6% of Republicans. Tester trails his challenger even though he was favored over Sheehy by independent voters and viewed more favorably by them.

In Montana, Harris is viewed unfavorably by 60% of likely voters, who trusted Trump more than her on every issue tested, including the economy, immigration, abortion, democracy and helping the working class.

In a sign of the state’s partisan tilt and the uphill battle for Tester, even independent voters there said they preferred that Republicans control the Senate in 2025.

In the Montana governor’s race, Trump’s edge over Harris (57% to 40%) was similar to the lead of Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte over his Democratic challenger, Ryan Busse (57% to 35%).

For Tester, the steady barrage of negative ads about him appears to have affected his image, with 47% viewing him favorably and 50% unfavorably.

All three new Times/Siena polls — in Montana, Texas and Florida — showed fresh evidence of a trend that has been the case across the map this year: Republican Senate candidates are running behind Trump.

In all three states, the gender gap was working in the GOP’s favor. Men favored the Republicans by a wider margin than women favored the Democratic candidates.

Interestingly, immigration was tied with the economy as the most pressing issue for voters in Montana — while it was significantly behind the economy as the most important issue for voters in Texas and Florida, two states that are more traditionally associated with the topic, even if Montana borders Canada.

Boeing and workers dig in for a long fight, despite strike’s cost

Boeing and its largest union appear to be digging in for a long fight — even as some striking workers start to look for temporary jobs and the company risks having its credit rating downgraded to junk status.

Nearly a month into the strike, negotiations between Boeing and the union resumed this week under federal mediation after a long break. But they collapsed Tuesday, with the company withdrawing its latest offer. The two sides traded blame for the breakdown.

In a message to employees, Stephanie Pope, CEO of Boeing’s commercial airplane unit, said the union had made “demands far in excess of what can be accepted if we are to remain competitive as a business.”

The union accused Boeing of being “hellbent” on sticking to the offer that labor leaders had previously rejected for being insufficient to garner the support of most of its more than 33,000 members.

A long strike is the last thing Boeing needs. The company, which hasn’t reported a full-year profit since 2018, is now losing tens of millions of dollars more every day that striking workers are not building planes. The work stoppage also comes as Boeing is trying to persuade regulators to let it produce more 737 Max jets, its bestselling plane. And Tuesday, S&P Global Ratings said it was considering lowering the company’s credit rating, which sits just above junk status, depending on the strike’s length.

The walkout, which began Sept. 13, is also difficult for workers, many of whom are living off savings and have had to find health coverage after Boeing dropped them from its plan this month.

But in interviews and online forums, many workers said they were prepared to wait for a better deal after growing frustrated by wages that failed to keep pace with rising costs and concessions that they made in previous contracts. They have also drawn inspiration from the gains that unions in other industries have secured for their members.

“The union membership is really unified right now,” said Rob Tompkins, a quality assurance inspector on the 777X plane in Everett, Washington. “I’m ready to stay out until January if need be.”

The strike began in mid-September after workers overwhelmingly rejected a four-year tentative contract negotiated by union leaders and company executives. Boeing made the now-withdrawn proposal days later, offering a 30% raise and other improved benefits, but the union and its members said the deal didn’t go far enough.

A survey of thousands of members at the time found that a vast majority were not interested in the offer, Jon Holden, the leader of District 751 of the Machinists union, which represents nearly all of the striking workers, said in an interview.

“The reality is it didn’t meet what our members were looking for,” he said. “We were never going to vote that offer.”

Consumer prices in the Seattle area have risen more than 40% over the past decade, according to federal data. The region’s thriving tech industry, which includes Amazon and Microsoft, has contributed to fast-rising home prices, which have more than dou-

bled over that same period, according to the Case-Shiller index.

Boeing machinists make about $75,000 in average annual pay, which includes 8% in contractual raises over the past decade and more than $4 an hour in additional cost-of-living adjustments over the same period, according to the company. The union is seeking a 40% wage increase in a new contract.

“Real estate is the key cost that has just exploded here,” said Thomas Gilbert, a professor of finance and economics at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business in Seattle. “If wages only increase at 2% a year or 3% a year compared to real estate, it simply has not kept up at all.”

Under Boeing’s most recent offer, starting pay for union members, most of whom work in the Seattle suburbs, would have risen to $20 an hour, and the average machinist would have earned more than $111,000 annually by the end of the four-year contract, according to the company. That would have put starting pay at around Seattle’s minimum wage, which is slated to rise to $20.76 in January.

Many Boeing workers are also seeking changes to a 2014 deal in which the union’s members accepted a contract that froze their pension plan in exchange for a promise by Boeing to keep production of the 777X in the Seattle area.

Boeing was publicly searching for a different place to make the plane, which is designed for international flights. Washington state ultimately approved $8.7 billion in subsidies to encourage the company to keep the work in the Seattle area.

Several workers said they felt that Boeing had bullied the union into that deal, even as the company earned record profits. They also expressed frustration with their union’s international leadership for forcing a vote early in January when some more senior workers would have been on vacation. Union members approved the deal by a 51%-to-49% margin.

“I think the company vastly underestimated how upset the membership was from the 2014 contract extension,” said Andrew DeFreese, a heavy equipment operator at Boeing’s Everett plant. “We have been talking about that ever since it happened.”

S&P 500 earnings to put investor focus on tech, AI

Investors will be looking for evidence that investment in artificial intelligence among S&P 500 companies is beginning to pay off as the reporting season progresses, despite the fact that analysts expect profit growth to decelerate from the previous quarter.

S&P 500 earnings are estimated to have increased 5.3% over the year-ago quarter, down from a second-quarter gain of 13.2%, but technology and communication services sectors are forecast to have the strongest year-over-year growth, according to LSEG data as of Friday.

The earnings period unofficially kicks off this week, with reports from major financial firms including JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo due Friday.

AI-related companies have dominated earnings since last year, and optimism over AI plans have helped to drive strong gains in the market. The S&P 500 is at record high levels and up roughly 21% for the year so far, with tech and communication services leading sector gains since Dec. 31.

“Many analysts will start looking at how and if a lot of these larger companies can monetize the model that they’re training, and we’ve seen the ones that have been able to do so have been rewarded quite well,” said Howard Chan, chief executive officer of Kurv Investment Management in San Francisco.

Technology sector earnings in aggregate are expected to have gained 15.4% from the year-ago quarter, while communication services earnings are seen up 12.3%, based on LSEG data.

“Companies like Microsoft and Google, they’re spending quite a bit, but it’s a little bit less understood... how that will interplay with their existing businesses,” Chan said.

Investors may also be hoping earnings can justify higher stock prices. With the S&P 500 at record high levels, the index is now trading at 22.3 times future 12-month earnings estimates, well above its long-term average of 15.7, according to LSEG Datastream.

Solita Marcelli, chief investment officer for Americas at UBS Global Wealth Management, wrote in a note Wednes-

day that third-quarter results could provide a catalyst for gains as investors focus on tech fundamentals and AI.

“We continue to favor the semiconductor space and megacaps for AI exposure,” she wrote, noting that she expects tech and AI companies to beat results for the quarter ended in September and also raise their outlooks.

UBS expects overall AI semiconductor industry revenues to grow sharply, and reach $168 billion by the end of this year, according to the note.

UN says Israel fired on peacekeepers in Lebanon, injuring 2 and spurring international criticism

Israeli forces fired on United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon and wounded two of them Thursday, according to the U.N. force, which called it “a grave violation of international humanitarian law.”

The episode, which injured two soldiers from Indonesia, drew international criticism from countries including France, Italy and Spain as the Israeli military waged a ground operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon that has killed more than 2,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands since the war broke out, Lebanese officials said.

The U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, commonly known by its acronym, UNIFIL, said an Israeli tank had fired toward and “directly” hit an observation tower at the force’s headquarters in Naqoura, Lebanon, and that soldiers had struck the entrance of a bunker at a separate base nearby where peacekeepers were sheltering.

The U.N. force condemned the strike, saying in a statement Thursday that it was following up with the Israeli military, which said that it was “looking into the reports.”

The episode came on the same day that an Israeli strike hit central Beirut, according to Lebanon’s state media. The Lebanese Health Ministry said it had killed 18 and wounded 48 others.

Last week, Israeli ground troops invaded southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah holds sway, and they have been battling the militants in deadly and close combat in the days since.

UNIFIL stressed that it was paramount for Israel, Hezbollah and other combatants “to ensure the safety and security” of its personnel and facilities, noting that the episode Thursday came amid intensified combat that was “causing widespread destruction of towns and villages in

south Lebanon.”

Last week, a UNIFIL spokesperson said Israel’s military had established new positions beside a peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon and had been firing at Hezbollah positions from those locations, raising concerns about the peacekeepers’ safety.

Asked about an Israeli request to move U.N. peacekeepers 5 kilometers north, Farhan Haq, a spokesperson for U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, said, “While we continue to assess the safety and security of our peacekeeping forces, it’s important that they also fulfill their mandate, and they are, at present, staying in their positions.” Haq added, “There’s no cause for any member state to target UNIFIL forces.”

The two soldiers injured Thursday were hospitalized with “not serious” wounds, the UNIFIL statement said.

The peacekeepers inside the bunker in the second episode — at a base in the town of Labbouneh, about 2 miles from Naqoura — were Italian, according to a U.N. official briefed on the attacks who requested anonymity because he had not been authorized to speak to the news media.

UNIFIL said vehicles and communications equipment had been damaged. It also said that a day earlier, Israeli soldiers had “fired at and disabled” the security cameras around the U.N. site in Labbouneh.

Italy has one of the largest contingents in the UNIFIL force. The country’s defense minister, Guido Crosetto, said at a news conference Thursday that “the hostile acts committed and repeated by Israeli forces” against the headquarters of the U.N. peacekeeping force “could constitute war crimes.” He called the acts “serious violations of the norms of international law, not justified by any military reason.”

Crosetto also said in a statement that he had summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest what is happening in southern Lebanon, particularly at the Italian bases, and called it “totally unacceptable.”

f the burned-out cars, bullet-riddled schools, demolished buildings and desolate streets in downtown Port-au-Prince weren’t enough evidence of the terrible things that happened here, someone left an even more ominous hint: skulls in the middle of the street.

A human head propped up on a stick with another on the ground beside it in front of a government office was apparently intended as a menacing message from gang members to the Kenyan and Haitian police officers trying to restore order to Haiti: Beware, we rule these streets.

A Kenyan police officer wearing a bulletproof vest and helmet and patrolling in an American armored personnel carrier took a photograph with his cellphone, while another ma-

neuvered the vehicle around the skulls.

I, along with a New York Times photographer, went on patrol through Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, with a Kenyanled multinational security mission deployed in the country. During the six-hour tour, the Kenyans were mostly ignored by people on the street and occasionally heckled; the vehicle was shot at once.

The patrol offered a glimpse into the enormous challenges the Kenyan force faces in trying to wrest control of Port-au-Prince from armed groups that have unraveled life in the country, killing indiscriminately, raping women, burning neighborhoods and leaving hundreds of thousands hungry and in makeshift shelters.

The route taken by the officers revealed many buildings the police had demolished to try to eliminate gang hideouts.

The officers also traveled to the Port-au-Prince seaport — the main conduit for food, medicine and other goods into Haiti — at all times alert for potential snipers hiding on rooftops.

At the port, workers were loading a ferry for a new maritime route to move items to provinces by water, avoiding gang strongholds on land.

The officers, whose supervisors were not permitted to give interviews, said they had recently intensified their operations in an effort to “squeeze” gangs from several fronts.

A day later, a dockworker at the seaport was shot and injured.

That same day, the Kenyans engaged in a shootout with gang members on motorcycles and encountered the paths to the seaport blocked.

“What surprised me so much when I came here is how the gangs could dare to attack in broad daylight,” Godfrey Otunge, the Kenyan commander of the multinational police force, said in an interview. “How on earth can this happen?”

Since the first Kenyan officers arrived in June, officials cite important progress as life in some neighborhoods slowly returns to normal.

The Port-au-Prince airport has reopened after gangs were cleared from around its perimeter. Many street vendors are back working, and gangs have also been pushed out of the capital’s main public hospital.

But the Kenyan officers are vastly outnumbered, and the heavily armed gangs remain firmly entrenched in many parts of Port-au-Prince. Huge swaths remain no-go zones, including downtown and the area around the U.S. Embassy. Gangs no longer control the public hospital, but it is in shambles and has not reopened.

Criminal groups have also expanded their control outside the capital, seizing three key roads linking Port-au-Prince to other parts of the country and laying siege to smaller cities

and towns that the international force does not have the resources to reach.

Last week, a gang in the Artibonite Valley in the central part of the country attacked a town, leaving 88 people dead, including 10 gang members.

More than 700,000 people who fled their homes during a wave of violence over the past year and a half are still unable to return. Half the country’s population — roughly 5.4 million people — struggles to eat every day, and at least 6,000 people living in squalid camps are facing starvation, according to an analysis released recently by a group of global experts.

Haiti has been gripped by astonishing levels of gang violence for more than three years, since the country’s last elected president, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated.

Many people who fled the violence took up residence in public schools and government buildings. Nearly 3,700 people have been killed this year, according to the United Nations.

The blocked roads leading to and from Port-au-Prince make it “almost impossible” for the police to intervene in time when gangs attack new locations outside the metropolitan area, Haiti’s prime minister, Garry Conille, said at a meeting in New York last month.

But the Kenyan-led force is woefully small.

Originally planned for 2,500 officers, it has just more than 400. On the other side, experts estimate that up to 15,000 people are members of 200 Haitian gangs.

The $600 million mission was sanctioned by the United Nations but largely financed and organized by the United States. It relies on voluntary contributions, and has so far been given $369 million by the United States and $85 million by other nations.

Shifting the Kenyan deployment to a peacekeeping mission could be the only way to free Haiti from the grip of gangs and allow the scheduling of elections to choose a new president, experts said.

The Biden administration recently announced a separate aid allocation — $160 million — for the Haitian National Police.

Kenya’s foreign affairs minister, Musalia W. Mudavadi, said at last month’s meeting in New York that there was only so much 400 officers could accomplish, making clear that the force’s capabilities were “currently lacking.”

The Biden administration is trying to turn the deployment into an official U.N. peacekeeping mission, which would require member states to contribute money and personnel.

Kenya’s president, William Ruto, plans to send 300 more officers this month and 300 more by the end of November. Jamaica and Belize have also sent a small number of officers.

The Biden administration believes it would be the most effective way to ensure that an international mission continues for as long as needed, a senior Biden administration official said in a briefing where reporters were told that the official could not be identified discussing diplomatic matters.

“We have a chance, a chance to build on this foundation of security, to build on this progress, to build on a renewed sense of hope,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said during September’s meeting with Haitian and Kenyan officials.

U.N. peacekeeping operations have a long and complicated history in Haiti, rife with sexual abuse and poor sanitation that brought cholera to the country and caused thousands of deaths.

But despite the past troubles, the head of Haiti’s transitional presidential council, which is charged with setting elections, has urged the United Nations to return.

Reinforcements would allow the Kenyans to set up a dozen forward operating bases throughout the metropolitan area and in the nearby Artibonite Valley so that an area retaken from gangs can be held, Otunge said.

When the Kenyans responded in late July to a gang attack in Ganthier, about 20 miles east of Portau-Prince, the operation took a week because of the lack of air support, and officers had to sleep in their vehicles, Otunge said. There was no food for the Kenyan officers so the Haitian police shared theirs, he added.

Still, he added proudly, “we pushed the gangs.”

“I am convinced that this change of status, while recognizing that the errors of the past cannot be repeated, would guarantee the full success of the mission,’’ Haiti’s acting president, Edgard Leblanc Fils, told the U.N. General Assembly last month.

Carlos Hercule, Haiti’s justice minister, said he was feeling “impatient” because many Haitian police officers have left the country, adding that Haiti needed a beefed-up deployment soon.

Otunge, a former director of security operations for the Kenyan Police who has participated in peace missions in South Sudan and Somalia, urged patience.

He will not stop, he said, until Haiti “regains its glory.”

“I cannot fail the Haitian people,” Otunge said. “I’ve never failed, and I’m not ready to fail in Haiti.”

Trump’s grudge over Ukraine became opening for Putin

On July 7, 2017, after President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia shook hands in Hamburg, Germany, to conclude their first face-to-face meeting, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson walked out of the sterile conference room, removed notes from his pocket and gave anxious White House aides a summary.

“We’ve got work to do to change the president’s mind on Ukraine,” Tillerson said.

The secretary of state had just watched Putin, the former KGB spymaster, put on a master class in seeking to shape the thinking of the new American president.

The Russian leader disparaged Ukraine, a former Soviet republic with aspirations of joining the European Union and NATO. Ukraine, he told Trump, was a corrupt, fabricated country. Russia, which had seized the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine three years earlier and backed pro-Russia separatists in a border region, had every right to exert its influence over the country, he insisted.

Trump told Putin that his administration was considering giving weapons to Ukraine. “What do you think?” Trump asked, to which Putin said it would be “a mistake.”

Trump, who came to the meeting armed with hawkish talking points drawn up by his advisers, never pushed back, according to three U.S. officials who were in Hamburg for the summit.

The meeting is something of a historical footnote to the Trump presidency. It has long been overshadowed by the summit with Putin the next year in Helsinki, when Trump famously said he took the word of Putin over his own intelligence agencies on the question of whether Russia had interfered with the 2016 presidential election.

Yet a close examination of the Hamburg summit, and the months that led up to it, help explain the roots of Trump’s often-disdainful attitude toward Ukraine.

The meeting in Hamburg fit into a yearlong pattern in which an escalating political grudge against Ukraine on Trump’s part became an opening for Putin to pursue his own aim of tempering American support for Ukraine, according to interviews with U.S. and European officials and allies of Trump, as well as accounts in memoirs.

That animus toward Ukraine remains front and center in the final weeks of the 2024 campaign. Trump has left unclear whether, if elected, he would cut off or reduce American military and diplomatic support for Ukraine as it battles the Russian invasion.

The views that Trump was developing in 2016 and 2017 could, if he returns to the White House, shape policies with profound consequences for the stability of Europe, the future of NATO and America’s relations with Russia.

Trump came into office with suspicions that officials in Ukraine not so secretly favored Democrats. Then, during their initial contacts, Putin worked to cement in Trump’s head the idea that Ukraine was less a feisty young democracy eager for deeper ties to the West than an unruly Russian-speaking neighbor run by shadowy oligarchs and corrupt officials who had sought to help elect Hillary Clinton.

Those suspicions would surface in the events that led to Trump’s first impeachment, triggered by a 2019 phone call with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, then Ukraine’s newly elected president. During the call, Trump implied that American military support to Ukraine was conditioned on whether Zelenskyy helped investigate his political rivals.

Trump’s skepticism about Ukraine and his suspicions that the country’s leaders favor Democrats continue to play out in the current presidential campaign. During his debate last month with Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump sidestepped a direct question about whether he wanted Ukraine to win the war.

Last week, he accused Zelenskyy of using his recent trip to the United States to bolster Harris’ campaign through an appearance at a munitions factory in Pennsylvania.

In response to questions about the development of Trump’s views, Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, replied only that “weakness” on the part of President

Joe Biden and Harris was to blame for Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

“President Trump will restore world peace through American strength and ensure European nations carry their weight by paying their fair share to our mutual defense to lighten the unfair burden on American taxpayers,” she said in an emailed statement.

In August 2016, less than three months before Trump’s stunning election win, his campaign took a body blow.

Paul Manafort, the campaign chair, resigned days after news broke about an investigation by a Ukrainian government agency into handwritten ledgers purporting to show millions in undisclosed cash payments to Manafort from a pro-Russia political party in Ukraine, where he had worked as a consultant.

Weeks earlier, Trump had publicly appealed to Moscow for help in his campaign against Clinton, encouraging Russia to leak damaging emails about his opponent that Russian government hackers had stolen from the Democratic National Committee.

But the disclosure of the investigation into the ledgers was seen among Trump allies as evidence that the Ukrainian officials were in cahoots with the Democrats to sully the Trump campaign’s reputation.

By that point in the campaign, Trump had spoken in public on occasion about Ukraine’s simmering conflict with Russia. Usually it was to question the wisdom of sending money and arms to a country that he saw as being of little strategic importance to the United States when powerful European countries like Germany refused, or were reluctant to do so, for fear of antagonizing Moscow.

But, within Trump’s circle, a darker portrait of Ukraine began to emerge, one of a country filled with Trump’s political enemies.

An impromptu conversation Trump had at a fundraising dinner late in the 2016 campaign seemed to reinforce this view with the future president. In October of that year, a Trump campaign donor named Robert Pereira hosted the candidate at his oceanside mansion in Hillsboro Beach, Florida.

Among those in attendance was Lev Parnas, a Ukrainian-born American who would go on to help Trump and Rudy Giuliani try to find damaging information

about Hunter Biden in Ukraine and then turn against Trump.

H.R. McMaster, a former White House national security adviser, wrote in his recent memoir that during the president’s June 2017 meeting with Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s president at the time, Trump said bluntly he had heard from “a Ukrainian friend” that Ukraine was a corrupt country, and that the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia seized from Ukraine in 2014, was actually part of Russia.

Parnas said he believes that was a reference to him. “I’m the only Ukrainian American friend he had at the time,” he said.

As he prepared to take office, all of these events, and subsequent findings by U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia had intervened to help get Trump elected, were seen by Trump as an attempt to sow doubt about the legitimacy of his victory. And they created fertile ground for Putin to exploit when he and Trump spoke by phone on Jan. 28, 2017, their first call of Trump’s presidency.

According to a former senior U.S. official with direct knowledge of what took place during the call, it was Trump who first raised the issue of Ukraine, asking Putin to give his opinion about the country because he had heard differing views.

The Russian president seized the opening. He launched into an extended monologue about corruption in Ukraine.

At the time, the FBI was investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and contacts between Trump’s advisers and individuals connected to the Kremlin. In response, some of Trump’s allies began circulating a baseless theory that the Democratic National Committee’s hacked computer server was actually in Ukraine and that the FBI was never able to examine it.

‘Joy’ is working for Harris, but can it close the deal?

“If Donald Trump were just to shut up for a few days, he would be elected president,” but he just doesn’t understand that, pollster Frank Luntz said last week. And he said if Kamala Harris and Tim Walz “would just get real with the American people, that would ensure their election, but they’re too afraid.”

But what does “get real” mean? For Harris, it means putting herself in position to make more meaningful connections with voters who are still on the bubble, what I call the “final 5%,” give or take, that I believe she’ll need to win over to ensure a victory.

For many of us, that connection has already been forged, or was an unnecessary condition of our support. For us, not only is Harris the best choice; she’s also the only choice — a must-win candidate as a guard against a rising authoritarianism.

But in mid-September, a quarter of voters said they still needed to learn more about her, compared with just 1 in 10 who said the same about Trump. There was at least one other modern, major-party nominee whom people similarly said they didn’t know well enough: Mitt Romney in the summer of 2012. And of course, Romney lost that election even though he was basically tied with Barack Obama nationally in the second week of October.

I had hoped that Harris’ campaign of joy would continue to fill her sails and that her rise in the polls would be inexorable. But according to FiveThirtyEight, Harris and Trump have close-to-even chances of winning.

One way to read this is that voters still need to know more about Harris’ positions, particularly on the issues for which her positions have changed over time. Another way to read them is as an expression of a lack of connection with her as a candidate.

I don’t think the latter is a fatal flaw of her campaign, but I do believe that it’s an area of opportunity.

It’s not that Harris needs to pull back from conveying joy, because, as pollster Cornell Belcher said, “It’s what got her there.” He said that she should hold to that component of her message in the same way that Obama held to “hope” in

2008 even as Gulf Coast states were ravaged by Hurricane Gustav and a financial crisis unfolded.

But what the Harris campaign must do — and is doing — Belcher said, is layer specific issues like housing affordability and health care “under the overarch of joy.”

The campaign doesn’t need a post-joy strategy, but it definitely needs an in-addition-to-joy strategy.

For me, that also extends into press strategy. The campaign, which has leaned heavily on influencers and entertainers — many of them providing friendly media venues in which Harris isn’t pressed or challenged — is slowly and cautiously including more challenging settings, like her recent appearance on “60 Minutes.”

But her campaign must do more. Harris has to come down from behind the rally podiums for more personal interactions with individual voters.

I sat down and watched or rewatched a dozen Harris events and appearances that have taken place since the Democratic National Convention. Her rallies, exercises in remarkable message discipline, are built around a fairly standard stump speech: a recitation of plans and policies with vignettes from her biography and condemnations of Trump.

But the rallies often don’t seem to provide enough space for the organic moment, for the one-on-one human interaction, for a skeptical voter to really see who she is as a person. What’s desperately missing are more town hall-style events or more unmanaged, unscripted interactions with everyday Americans.

Some of the most memorable and most humanizing moments for presidential candidates happen in these smaller settings, as in 2008 when John McCain corrected a supporter who said she didn’t trust Obama because “he’s an Arab” and when Hillary Clinton teared up talking to a small group of voters about how hard it was being on the campaign trail.

While that year’s Republican National Convention was going on, Obama made stops at more intimate settings to get up close and personal with voters in battleground states. At a farm in Ohio, he said, “They’re going to try to make you scared of me,” but, “You spread the word out there, don’t let them fool you.” His strategy was to not only counterprogram the RNC but also to countervail the skepticism about him that Republicans were stoking. His direct engagement with voters helped to humanize and demystify him. That’s what Harris needs in the homestretch of this campaign.

There is risk in this, I realize, that the campaign seems reluctant to take. But in its efforts, it seems, to shield Harris from “gotcha” moments, it’s also robbing her of chances to have transcendent moments in which her appeal crosses over from those who strongly support her to those who remain wary.

As Democratic strategist Donna Brazile said, “You cannot reach people from a platform or a stage,” rather,

“You got to actually be in the neighborhoods and go and tell the folks that you need help and you want their vote, and listen.”

Harris has run a remarkable race, one truncated by the historic route by which she became her party’s nominee. But now she must finish it in the way many longer campaigns begin: by prioritizing retail politics that win over the reluctant.

SAN JUAN – Un gran jurado federal en el Distrito de Puerto Rico emitió una acusación formal el 28 de septiembre de 2024, contra 23 miembros de una violenta ganga en Aguadilla por conspiración para distribuir drogas, posesión y distribución de sustancias controladas, y violaciones de armas de fuego. El caso fue investigado por el Negociado Federal de Investigaciones (FBI, por sus siglas en inglés) y la Policía de Puerto Rico, con el apoyo de la Fuerza de Choque de Aguadilla.

“Las organizaciones criminales como la que desmantelamos hoy dañan a nuestras comunidades con el tráfico de drogas y la violencia”, afirmó el fiscal federal W. Stephen Muldrow en declaraciones escritas. “Seguiremos enfocando nuestros recursos para sacar a los miembros de gangas violentas de las comunidades y así permitir que los ciudadanos vivan en paz”, agregó.

La acusación alega que, desde 2015, la organización traficaba cocaína, crack y marihuana cerca del residencial La Montaña en Aguadilla, obteniendo ganancias significativas. Los acusados operaban puntos de drogas que cambiaban de ubicación para evitar ser detectados por las autoridades, usaban mascarillas para evitar su identificación y pedían identificación gubernamental a los compradores.

Los miembros de la ganga asumían roles como líderes, ejecutores, vendedores y facilitadores, utilizando la violencia para intimidar a rivales y disciplinar a sus propios miembros. Ocho de los acusados también enfrentan cargos por posesión de armas de fuego en apoyo al narcotráfico.

Si son declarados culpables, los acusados enfrentan sentencias de entre 10 años y cadena perpetua, además de una posible confiscación de bienes valorados en 6.8 millones de dólares.

La inversión incluye 85 millones de dólares destinados a fortalecer 105 entidades de cuido infantil que sirven a 5,478 menores. Además, se asignarán 34 millones de dólares para Vales de Cuido, beneficiando a familias que podrán elegir el centro de cuido de su preferencia.

También, 10.2 millones de dólares se destinarán a 50 Centros 2 Generaciones, que impactan tanto a menores como a sus familias, y 10.3 millones de dólares bajo el programa EQUIP 2024 para mejorar 244 centros de cuido.

Rodríguez Troche destacó que esta inversión no solo mejorará la calidad de los centros de cuido infantil, sino que también fortalecerá la economía creando empleos.

Han Kang is awarded Nobel Prize in literature

Han Kang, the South Korean author best known for “The Vegetarian,” was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature Thursday — the first writer from her country to receive the major award.

Mats Malm, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, which organizes the prize, said at a news conference in Stockholm that she was receiving the honor “for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”

Han’s best-known book, “The Vegetarian,” published in South Korea in 2007, won the 2016 International Booker Prize after it was translated into English. In the surreal novel, a depressed housewife shocks her family when she stops eating meat; later, she starves herself, thinking that she can feed off sunlight.

Porochista Khakpour, in a review of “The Vegetarian” for The New York Times, said that Han “has been rightfully celebrated as a visionary in South Korea.”

Han’s other novels include “The White Book,” which was also nominated for the International Booker Prize, and “Greek Lessons,” published in English in 2023. In “Greek Lessons,” a woman loses her ability to speak and tries to restore it by learning ancient Greek. Idra Novey, in a review for the Times, called the novel “a celebration of the ineffable trust to be found in sharing language.”

said in a statement Thursday that Han, in her writing, “has a unique awareness of the connections between body and soul, the living and the dead, and in her poetic and experimental style has become an innovator in contemporary prose.”

Han’s award was a surprise. Before the announcement, the bookmakers’ favorite for this year’s award was Can Xue, an avant-garde Chinese writer of category-defying novels.

The Nobel Prize is literature’s preeminent award, and winning it is a capstone to a writer, poet or playwright’s career. Past recipients have included Toni Morrison, Harold Pinter and, in 2016, Bob Dylan. Along with the prestige and a huge boost in sales, the new laureate receives 11 million Swedish krona (about $1 million).

In recent years, the academy has tried to increase the diversity of authors considered for the literature prize, after facing criticism over the low number of laureates who were female or came from outside Europe and North America.

Since 2020, the academy has awarded the prize to one person of color — Abdulrazak Gurnah, a Tanzanian writer whose novels dissect the legacy of colonialism — as well as two women: Louise Glück, the American poet, and Annie Ernaux, the French writer of autobiographical works.

Last year’s recipient was Jon Fosse, a Norwegian author and playwright whose novels, told in lengthy sentences, often contain religious undertones.

‘The Menendez Brothers’ review: Reframing a case

“The Menendez Brothers” doesn’t so much relitigate the case of Lyle and Erik Menendez as reframe it. In 1996, the brothers were convicted of murdering their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in Beverly Hills, California, in 1989. That was their second trial. The first had ended in 1994 with two deadlocked juries, each assigned to deliberate over one sibling.

This documentary, directed by Alejandro Hartmann and released on Netflix less than a month after the streamer put out Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s dramatization of these events, opens with the hook of “exclusive interviews” with the brothers, who “have not told their story together in nearly 30 years.” But its main contentions break down along two lines.

One is that, following the #MeToo movement, the public might be more receptive to the brothers’ claim of “imperfect self-defense”: They had argued that their father had a history of sexual and psychological abuse that led them to an honest but mistaken belief that their parents would kill them.

The other is that the context of the trials mattered. The first trial was televised in what the film portrays as a warm-up for the news media circus that would surround the O.J. Simpson case. The second trial began after Simpson had been acquitted of murder; the movie suggests that public criticism of that verdict interfered with the Menendezes’ getting a fair shake.

No Netflix documentary could offer sufficient information to assess those claims, and this one, which glosses over even mild complexities like the separate juries in the first trial, feels incomplete. (Last week George Gascón, the Los Angeles County district attorney, announced that he was reviewing the case.) To the extent the film has appeal, it is of the tabloid variety. Betty Oldfield, an alternate juror in the first trial, recalls corresponding with the imprisoned Erik Menendez and receiving an oil painting that he had done. Pamela Bozanich, a deputy district attorney who prosecuted the first trial, says she “couldn’t find anyone to say anything nice about Jose Menendez except for his secretary.”

Scientists seeking life on Mars heard a signal that hinted at the future

At sunset on a late summer weekend in 1924, crowds flocked to curbside telescopes to behold the advanced alien civilization they believed to be present on the surface of Mars.

“See the wonders of Mars!” an uptown sidewalk astronomer shouted in New York City on Saturday, Aug. 23. “Now is your chance to view the snowcaps and the great canals that are causing so much talk among the scientists. You’ll never have such a chance again in your lifetime.”

That weekend, Earth and Mars were separated by just 34 million miles, closer than at any other point in a century. Although this orbital alignment, called an opposition, occurs every 26 months, this one was particularly captivating to audiences across continents and inspired some of the first large-scale efforts to detect alien life.

“In scores of observatories, watchers and photographers are centering their attention on that enigmatic red disk,” journalist Silas Bent wrote on Aug. 17, 1924. He added that it might be the moment to “solve the disputed question of whether supermen rove his crust, and whether those lines, which many observers say they have seen, really are irrigation canals.”

Scientists plotted for years to make the most of the Martian “close-up.” To aid the experiments, the U.S. Navy cleared the airwaves, imposing a nationwide period of radio silence for five minutes at the top of each hour from Aug. 21 to 24 so that messages from Martians could be heard. A military cryptographer was on hand to “translate any peculiar messages that might come by radio from Mars.”

Then, lo and behold, an astonishing radio signal arrived with the opposition.

A series of dots and dashes, captured by an airborne antenna, produced a photographic record of “a crudely drawn face,” according to news reports. The tantalizing results and subsequent media frenzy inflamed the public’s imagination. It seemed as if Mars was speaking, but what was it trying to say?

“The film shows a repetition, at intervals of about a half-hour, of what appears to be a man’s face,” one of the experiment’s leaders said days later.

“It’s a freak which we can’t explain,” he added.

A century has elapsed since the Mars mania of 1924, but the source of that strange signal remains a mystery. The original paper record is presumed lost, though digital copies have survived, ensuring that the crudely drawn face continues to stare out at us across time.

But the story of the 1924 Mars opposition is as much about the audacity of attempting a detection of extraterrestrial life as it was about the murky outcomes. Some things have changed, such as our technologies for studying the cosmos. But what endures is that sneaky feeling that we are not alone in the universe.

“We need some cosmic company out there, whether it’s in the form of gods or extraterrestrials,” said Steven Dick, an astronomer and former NASA chief historian who has written about humanity’s interest in aliens. “People go out and look at the night sky, and there’s all these thousands of stars, and they think, ‘Surely we can’t be the only ones.’”

“That’s a nice thought, but it’s not science,” he added.

The science, so far, includes the discovery that the basic building blocks of life are widely distributed in our galaxy. Researchers have also spotted thousands of planets orbiting other stars, including worlds roughly the size of Earth. And they know Mars was once habitable, a place with gushing rivers, freshwater lakes and substantive skies. They have even discovered possible biosignatures there, both from the past and in the present, although there is still no slamdunk evidence of aliens there, or anywhere.

Humanity has learned so much about our world, and others beyond it, in a century. But that progress flowed in part from the attitudes that defined the 1924 Mars opposition as an important milestone in the history of our search for aliens — a moment when the physical proximity of two worlds exposed a deeper yearning for cosmic connection, and the will to actively seek that contact through scientific innovation, that is still very much with us today.

In the expansive collections of the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation near Detroit, there is a boxy artifact that was designed for the trenches and battlefields of World War I. In August 1924, it wound up serving as an interplanetary communications prototype.

and a curator of communication and information technology at the Henry Ford, is a caretaker of many technological relics. But they have a special fondness for the device, a Navy-type model SE 950 radio, and its historic role as a would-be alien-detector.

“It is exactly my kind of object,” Gallerneaux said. “It feels like a buried history to me.”

Manufactured on March 26, 1918, by the National Electrical Supply Co., the hardy portable radio was designed to support troops in combat, but this unit was never battle tested. It ended up, instead, in the Washington laboratory of Charles Francis Jenkins, an inventor who played a key role in the development of television.

It might have been used in many postwar experiments, but its golden hour arrived before the 1924 Mars opposition when astronomer David Peck Todd enlisted Jenkins to solve a problem that still animates the community involved in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence: If messages from intelligent aliens are wafting through space, how might we capture them?

The astronomer and the inventor cobbled together an answer. During the opposition, a dirigible was launched from the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington to an altitude of just under 2 miles. It carried an an-

tenna, pointed at Mars, that relayed signals back from its aerial position to the SE 950 radio in Jenkins’ lab.

The data was then fed into the inventor’s “Radio Camera,” which converted radio signals into optical flashes that left imprints on a 38-foot-long roll of photographic paper. It was this process that produced the repeating pattern that many viewers interpreted as a face.

As some people longed for interplanetary validation, others worried about the wisdom of communicating with alien neighbors. A 1919 editorial titled “Let the Stars Alone” suggested that humans could be “unprepared” for “superior intelligences.”

Imagine if humans were to “cheerfully wireless to Mars, ‘two plus two is four,’ and Mars answers, ‘no, you’re wrong,’” the editorial posited. “What are you going to do about it?”

The opposition was an opportunity to road-test these competing ideas. From a hilltop in England, a group recorded “strange noises” that “could not be identified as coming from any earthly station.” In Vancouver, British Columbia, a signal “led radio experts here seriously to consider the theory that Mars is trying to ‘tune in.’”

Ultimately, the opposition produced no lasting evidence of Martian life, a result that vindicated scientific skeptics who had spent years pointing to the red planet’s absence of water or breathable air. Such truth seekers were often mocked.

“Some great talkers conclude that Mars must be uninhabitable,” French astronomer Camille Flammarion, a firm believer in intelligent Martians, wrote in March 1924. “This is not the reasoning of philosophers, but of fish,” he continued, comparing skeptics to fish who believe life out of water is impossible.

Today, a host of sophisticated technologies are revealing insights about the universe that nobody could have imagined 100 years ago. Rovers trundle across Mars, telescopes resolve chemicals in the clouds of faraway exoplanets and observatories scan space for messages across millions of radio frequencies.

But with regard to alien life, all of this ingenuity and investment has delivered the same basic result as that inscrutable readout of dots and dashes, mediated by a wartime radio born too late for combat, captured in 1924.

de abogado equivalentes a $18,279.00; la parte demandada se comprometió a pagar una suma equivalente a $18,279.00 para cubrir cualquier otro adelanto que se haga en virtud de la escritura de hipoteca; una suma equivalente a $18,279.00 para cubrir intereses en adición a los garantizados por ley; así como cualquier otra suma que se haga en virtud de la escritura de la hipoteca. Grimace is so regular season. Meet the Mets’ playoff pumpkin.

In late September, Washington Post sports reporter Chelsea Janes noticed a curious development in the New York Mets’ locker room. First baseman Pete Alonso had carried in a miniature pumpkin and placed it on the top shelf of his locker.

“I have never seen this before,” Janes wrote on the social platform X.

It would not be the last that Mets fans would hear of the pumpkin — the latest in a string of gleefully nonsensical lucky charms that have been embraced by the team amid its raucous run into the playoffs.

On Wednesday night, after the Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies to advance to the National League Championship Series, fans of the team rejoiced: The auspicious gourd had claimed another victim.

This season, Mets iconography has expanded to include Grimace, the purple McDonald’s mascot who now regularly graces the big screen at Citi Field, and “OMG,” a Latin pop anthem recorded by second baseman Jose Iglesias. (A remix featuring rapper Pitbull is apparently on its way.)

The pumpkin motif — which one headline called the team’s “gourd luck charm” — was arguably born with the same crack of a bat that rescued the team’s postseason hopes.

Last Thursday, Alonso hit the ninth-inning home run that powered the Mets past the Milwaukee Brewers and into a National League division series. Afterward, he took questions from reporters with his lucky pumpkin in one hand.

“It’s the playoff pumpkin,” Alonso said, a bottle of Champagne tucked under his other arm.

He gave the pumpkin a little toss, catching it in his palm. He and his wife had procured the pumpkin on a visit to a farm about 20 minutes outside Milwaukee, he said. He had picked it himself.

“Nothing’s more like fall than playoff baseball and pumpkins,” he added. As the team celebrated, players doused Alonso and his pumpkin in beer.

When the Mets returned to Queens this week after two weeks of road games, fans gave the pumpkin a hero’s welcome. They sought out playoff pumpkins of their own and decorated them in honor of the team. They dotted their posts

on social media with the jack-o’-lantern emoji. One fan carried a pumpkin to Citi Field to watch Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Alonso had also arrived at that game carrying his pumpkin. The Mets won, 7-2.

Baseball fans have often given their teams unofficial mascots: The St. Louis Cardinals have a Rally Squirrel, which occasionally dashes onto the field during games. In 2019, fans of the Washington Nationals wore shark hats after a player used the children’s song “Baby Shark” as his walk-up song.

Mets fans seized on Grimace, a bloblike McDonald’s character, after the mascot threw out the first pitch at a game on June 12. The team went on to win the next seven games, and Grimace was later honored with a purple seat in the stands at Citi Field.

Andy Goldberg, the Mets’ chief marketing officer, said that he and his staff had tried to acknowledge Grimacemania without diminishing its fun. “If you take something and shove it down the fans’ throat,” he said, “it kind of loses its momentum, because it feels like a marketing ploy.”

The Mets marketing team did not dream up the pumpkin phenomenon, he added. “That is a Pete Alonso special,” he said. “Now it’s taking on a life of its own, and we’re having fun leaning into it.”

Why, exactly, have the team’s fans latched on to so many supposedly auspicious symbols this season? It may be a blend of hope, superstition and unabashed corniness, Mike Silva, host of the Talkin’ Mets podcast, said. “These are the kind of things that take a very rote, boring sport and add color commentary to it,” he said.

Supporters of the Mets, who have not won a World Series since 1986, can have an air of negativity, but a younger and more social media-savvy generation of fans seems to be pushing back, Silva said. “This is their chance to make this history theirs,” he said.

Wyatt Harness, a 28-year-old Mets fan, was inspired to buy his own playoff pumpkin at an apple orchard outside Philadelphia this weekend. He

scoured the patch for a pumpkin that was similar in size and shape to Alonso’s.

After a rocky start to the season, Mets fans are eager to funnel their hope into practically any symbol, he said. And when it comes to the internet, sometimes the more nonsensical the better.

“I got it for the memes,” Harness said of the pumpkin, which now sits in his dining room. “It’s just like Pete said: October is about baseball and pumpkins.”
