2 GOOD MORNING

The San Juan Daily Star, the only paper with News Service in English in Puerto Rico, publishes 7 days a week, with a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday edition, along with a Weekend Edition to cover Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

New high temperature record set for San Juan

The San Juan metropolitan area set a temperature record for consecutive days above 90°F on Tuesday -- 37 days, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

On Monday, the temperature in the San Juan metro area again peaked at above 90°F, the NWS in San Juan reported. With that figure, the capital of Puerto Rico equaled the previous record of 36 consecutive days with maximum temperatures above 90°F, established during June and July of 2012.

With temperatures rising above 90°F again on Tuesday, San Juan set a new record of 37 consecutive days of markedly high temperatures. The milestone reinforces the need for authorities, along with citizens, to continue monitoring and preparing for the impacts of the extreme weather that much of the island has been experiencing in recent weeks.

The prolonged period of intense heat has raised concerns among climate experts, who say that such prolonged phenomena may be related to global warming patterns. In addition, authorities have warned about the possible effects on public health, especially for the most vulnerable people, such as the elderly and children, who are more prone to suffer heat stroke and other complications related to high temperatures.

The NWS stressed the importance of staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and seeking shelter in cool, well-ventilated areas.

Manuel Enrique Martínez Arbona, the president of the Puerto Rican Farmers Association’s Milk Sector, said Tuesday that raw milk production on the island is 14% lower compared to last year.

The decline is attributed primarily to a decrease in the inventory of cows in the production line.

“First, a marked decrease in the conception rate of cows due to the increase in temperatures last year and this year, has reduced the number of births in the herds,” Martínez Arbona said in a written statement. “Second, the drop in the purchase of cows due to the increase in their cost in the continental United States and the closure of this market due to bird flu since April. And third, a drop in milk production due to the lack of quality ingredients to formulate balanced diets.”

To address the situation, since September 2023, the

Puerto Rico Department of Agriculture and the PR Milk Producers Cooperative (COOPPLE by its initials in Spanish) developed the Tropically Adapted Genetic Transformation Program (ProGen PR), which seeks to improve reproductive management on dairy farms and offers a $400 incentive for guaranteed 90-day pregnancies.

Likewise, the Department of Agriculture implemented an equitable payment system for dairy farmers in 2022, which has favorably impacted producers, with an average payment of 90.25 cents per quart of raw milk, in addition to incentives for quality and added value that exceeded $6.2 million in the past 12 months.

Since 2021, COOPPLE has also implemented the 100% Free Grazing Program to reduce the carbon footprint, certify soil and water conservation practices, and improve the quality of production under tropical conditions, Martínez Arbona noted.

Alliance candidate for governor Dalmau’s wife, Griselle Morales, suffers stroke

Televised gubernatorial debate postponed

Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP by its initials in Spanish) and Alianza de País (Alliance) gubernatorial candidate Juan Dalmau Ramírez has paused all public appearances after his wife, Griselle Morales, suffered a stroke and had to be hospitalized.

“On Monday, in the afternoon, our family was shaken by an unexpected and serious event,” Dalmau said in a written statement early Tuesday. “My wife, Griselle, suffered an acute cerebral (subarachnoid) hemorrhage. She was hospitalized in an emergency and is in the intensive care unit. Today, Tuesday, she will undergo surgery.”

Just before press time on Tuesday, Dalmau’s campaign manager, Calixto Negrón, said the surgical intervention performed on Morales managed to contain the bleeding.

“The clinical picture is still delicate and the treatment has not finished,” Negrón said in a written statement. “Griselle will remain hospitalized, under the care of her doctors, who have indicated that she must remain on strict rest and under medical supervision.”

“Juan’s participation in the campaign will continue on hold until further notice,” he added.

Given the situation, Dalmau canceled a press conference scheduled for Tuesday with U.S. Reps. Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.) and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-N.Y.). He also canceled his participation in Tuesday evening’s gubernatorial debate organized by TeleOnce.

“At this moment, my soul, my heart, and all my attention is with my wife and my children, Gabriel and Sofia,” Dalmau said. “Our family puts Griselle’s health in God’s hands. I appreciate your prayers, solidarity, and good wishes at this time.”

Negrón said earlier Tuesday that Morales was at her residence when she felt ill. The candidate for governor was out, preparing for the debate, and he acted to take his wife to the hospital as soon as he was informed of her condition.

“[Morales] never lost consciousness nor did she ever lose the ability to speak,” Negrón said in a radio interview (RadioIsla). “So, for now, she is in stable condition and awaiting the studies

that will be done, but it is still something serious, something sensitive. It was a stroke, it was a cerebral hemorrhage. All of that is a somewhat difficult condition.”

Negrón stressed that the magnitude of the brain hemorrhage, its possible consequences, and the treatment that Morales requires would be known once the surgical intervention is carried out.

At mid-morning on Tuesday the TeleOnce administration announced the postponement of the debate between the candidates for governor, which had been scheduled for 8:30 p.m. the same day.

Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia, as well as several candidates from the Alliance and other political parties, expressed their solidarity with the Dalmau Morales family.

“I send a strong hug of solidarity to Juan Dalmau and his wife Griselle,” Pierluisi said. “My prayers for a speedy recovery and strength to face this health situation. I ask all our people to join in prayer and good wishes for her and her family.”

Sen. Ana Irma Rivera Lassén, who as the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC by its initials in Spanish)/Alliance candidate for resident commissioner is Dalmau’s running mate, said: “Given the gravity of this moment, I want to express my deepest solidarity, support and affection to my fellow fighter Juan Dalmau and his family. The news of Griselle’s health problem has shaken not only those of us who walk with Juan on this political journey, but also those of us who value the strength of the love that unites us in times of adversity.”

“Juan, I am with you. I join the voices that, from all corners of the archipelago, send good wishes and strength for Griselle’s speedy recovery,” she added. “Today, more than ever, we remember that, above all political struggle, is the life and well-being of those we love.”

Manuel Natal Albelo, the MVC candidate for San Juan mayor, expressed his “support and solidarity” for Dalmau and his family.

“In these times of uncertainty and concern, know that you have our full support and our prayers, with the hope that Griselle has a prompt and full recovery,” Natal said. “We are here for you, today more than ever, offering everything in our power to accompany you in this process.”

Dignity Project gubernatorial candidate Javier Jiménez

Puerto Rican Independence Party/Alliance gubernatorial candidate Juan Dalmau Ramírez and his wife Griselle Morales

lamented the situation faced by Dalmau and his wife.

“We pray to God Almighty to intervene miraculously with Griselle’s health and we are in total solidarity and brotherhood with Juan and all surrounding him,” he said.

Jesús Manuel Ortiz González, the Popular Democratic Party candidate for governor, said: “My hug of solidarity goes to Griselle, Juan Dalmau and his entire family. We are with you in this difficult moment.”

Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón, the New Progressive Party candidate for governor, said “I want to express my solidarity to Juan Dalmau and his entire family at this time due to the delicate health situation of his wife Griselle. I send my prayers and best wishes for her speedy recovery.”

“The health of our loved ones always comes before all considerations,” she added. “I trust that, with God, the love and support of her loved ones, she will find the strength necessary to overcome this stage.”

Teachers Assn. sues Education Dept. over inaction on payments

The Puerto Rico Teachers Association (AMPR by its initials in Spanish), along with its local union, sued the island Department of Education on Tuesday to demand adequate pay to teachers from 2014 to 2022.

“Our legal team has filed suit each time the deadlines established by law have passed to make payments to the teachers that they requested between 2014 and 2022,” AMPR President Víctor Manuel Bonilla Sánchez said at a press conference.

The secretary general of the AMPR’s local union, Ángel Javier Pérez Hernández, added that “it is up to us to denounce

that the Department of Education admitted in the most recent meeting that they haven’t begun to make the revisions of the Teachers Career cases of 2014-2015, as is their responsibility.”

The suit specifies that the Education Department has not complied with Law 9-2022 or with the Teachers Career Regulation, and that the agency has violated the constitutional decree for the due process of law for teachers.

“The Department of Education not only has not complied with the payment and the terms established in Law 9-2022. but in addition they have not provided an adequate notification of the teachers, in violation of their rights,” said the AMPR’s legal representative, Edgardo Pabón Rodríguez.

The Puerto Rico Teachers Association and its local union have sued the island Department of Education to demand adequate pay to teachers from 2014 to 2022.

Comptroller: Half of agencies fail to fix objections to contracts

The Commonwealth Comptroller of Puerto Rico says half of the 278 entities in the three branches of government did not correct or take steps to fix objections to contracts, something that could make them illegal.

In a special report, the comptroller highlighted that the failure on the part of 50% of the entities to address objections within the established term for fiscal year 2023 has significant implications for the public sector in Puerto Rico. All government contracts must be presented to the commonwealth comptroller under the law to be legal.

An objection is a notification to the entity’s active liaison officer, informing the agency that the contract submitted to the comptroller was incomplete or contained incorrect information. There are 2,511 contracts with objections in the Registry Application. Some of those have been more than 30 days pending a response. Contracts with objections totaled $1.16 billion to pay and $16 million to receive.

Those types of situations, which had already been discussed in Special Report DA-15-11 of Oct. 24, 2014,

prevent contracts from being accessible to the public as public documents and prevent the Comptroller’s Office from receiving corrected contracts as established by law.

The verification indicates that 64% of the main officials certified, under oath, incorrect information in the Annual Certification. The certification must be sent to the Comptroller’s Office by Aug. 31 at the close of each fiscal year. The auditors identified differences of up to 902 fewer contracts in the application and 227 more contracts in the Annual Certification. The application is the electronic registry of contracts in which entities register and submit their contracts.

The situation may cause disbursements of funds under the contracts contrary to Law 18 of 1975, the comptroller noted. In addition, it encourages the issuance of false certifications, an action that can be classified as a felony, according to Article 258 of the Penal Code of Puerto Rico.

The Three-Result Report verified that 26% of the entities did not send the Annual Certification for the year 2023, despite an extension until Sept. 15, 2023. In addition, 13% of the entities did not send the Annual Certification on the indicated date.

As a result, the Comptroller’s Office recommends to the executive director of the Government Ethics Office that he take the measures he deems appropriate.

Genera to award Siemens, Wärtsilä contracts for peaking units

Genera PR, the private operator of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority’s legacy power plants, announced Tuesday that it sent out notification of intent to award a pair of bids for the acquisition of the peaking units

designed to support Puerto Rico’s electrical grid.

Wärtsilä North America Inc. and Siemens Energy Inc. have been selected as the lead bidders in the process. Peaking power plants, also known as peaker plants, are power plants that generally run only when there is a high demand for power.

The peaking units are designed to operate on gas and diesel, offering flexibility to supply demand at critical times. Wärtsilä will supply eight reciprocating combustion engines that will be distributed across four key facilities around the island, while Siemens will be responsible for the installation of two combustion turbines at the Costa Sur plant in Peñuelas. The award is subject to final approval by the Financial Oversight and Management Board and the Public-Private Partnerships Authority before a contract is formalized.

“This is a fundamental step toward the modernization of Puerto Rico’s electrical system,” said Iván Báez, Genera PR’s vice president of corporate affairs. “The integration of these units ensures greater stability and responsiveness of the

grid, helping to face both energy demand and unforeseen events in the system. In addition, replacing the old units with these will result in savings in fuel costs since they will operate mainly with natural gas, unlike the current ones that operate with diesel.”

The selected companies will have to finalize the relevant contracts, following the approval of the relevant entities, before proceeding with the installation phase.

The project, which involves significant investment in energy infrastructure, will boost the long-term reliability of the system, proponents said. Genera PR has already begun the permitting process for the preparation of land where the units will be located.

The award is part of an ongoing effort to meet Puerto Rico’s energy transformation plans, which include the replacement of critical components in the current fleet, the acquisition of power backup units and a battery storage system to improve service reliability.

Regular segment in support of homeless population to be part of WIPR morning programming

The Multisectoral Council in Support of the Homeless, in collaboration with WIPR, announced on Tuesday a new alliance to raise awareness about homelessness on the island through the morning program

“Un Buen Día,” which is broadcast on the television

channel from Monday to Friday.

Starting this month, the Council will have a fixed segment on the program to share initiatives and resources available to support the homeless, non-profit organizations that offer services to the population and, equally important, to share life testimonies of people who have been on the streets and have managed to get

their lives back.

In making the announcement, WIPR President Jorge Pagán emphasized the importance of the effort to fulfill the channel’s educational and public service mission, and equally important to prevent homelessness in Puerto Rico.

“At WIPR we are committed to offering content that generates a positive impact in our community,” he said.

Harris uses Trump’s own words to attack him as ‘unhinged’: ‘Roll the clip’

Former President Donald Trump’s words thundered from screens at a packed campaign rally Monday night in Erie, Pennsylvania. But the event was for Vice President Kamala Harris, who was using Trump’s own words as her campaign amplified warnings of the dangers she says he poses should he win a second term in the White House.

Harris pulled few punches as she portrayed her Republican opponent as an authoritarian obsessed with his own power, pointing to Trump’s recent rallies and media appearances where he has asserted that his Democratic detractors were the “enemy from within,” more dangerous than foreign adversaries like Russia and China, and that they “should be put in jail.”

“After all these years, we know who Donald Trump is,” Harris said. “He is someone who will stop at nothing to claim power for himself.”

In a striking moment, Harris told the crowd of 6,000 that they didn’t have to take her word for it, that she had an example of his “worldview and intentions.”

“Please — roll the clip,” she said as the crowd groaned and gasped as Trump’s face flashed on screens.

“He’s talking about the enemy within our country, Pennsylvania,” Harris said to a jeering crowd. “He’s talking about that he considers anyone who doesn’t support him, or who will not bend to his will, an enemy of our country.”

Harris’ visit to Erie County, a bellwether county that is crucial to a statewide victory in a state that could be the 2024 tipping point, was her first as the Democrats’ presidential candidate since President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid and backed her. Trump won the county in 2016 but lost it narrowly to Biden in 2020.

Harris used the first half of her stump speech to lay out her policy proposals to build an “opportunity economy,” taking on price-gouging and expanding Medicare to cover home health care for the elderly and ill. She continued positioning herself as the underdog and argued that the stakes of this election were higher than in 2016 and 2020 because of a Supreme Court decision that vastly expanded presidential power.

She called Erie a “pivot county” and pleaded with those in the crowd to cast their ballots before November, as early voting has already begun in the state. “The election is here,” she said.

But it was the back half of her speech where Harris ramped up her attacks on Trump. She has increasingly engaged in the unusual campaign strategy of drawing attention to her opponent’s rallies. It was at their debate last month where she first encouraged people to watch his rallies as she called attention to violent rhetoric and erratic behavior. On Monday, she issued her most ominous warning yet, outlining how he has attacked officials who don’t find extra votes for him in an election, judges whose rulings he disagrees with and journalists whose coverage he doesn’t like.

“This is among the reasons I believe so strongly that a second Trump term would be a huge risk for America, and dangerous,” she added. “Donald Trump is increasingly unstable and unhinged.”

Harris’ campaign on Monday also released a new ad called “Enemy Within,” drawing on Trump’s recent comments, featuring two of his former national security aides, Olivia Troye and Kevin Carroll.

“I do remember the day that he suggested that we shoot people on the streets,” Troye recalls in the ad.

“A second term would be worse,” Carroll says.

The advertisement is similar to one the campaign began in battleground states this month, with top national security officials issuing dire warnings about Trump’s fitness for office.

The Democratic ticket’s attacks were twofold Monday night. In Green Bay, Wisconsin, Harris’ running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, struck perhaps his most fiery tone yet against Trump. Walz pointed to his own military service as he denounced Trump’s remarks, saying the notion of using the military against U.S. citizens made him “sick to his stomach.”

Walz urged the audience to realize Trump’s proposals were not normal.

“The former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, said, ‘No one has ever been more dangerous to this country than Donald Trump, and he is a fascist to his core,’” Walz said, referring to statements from the former officials featured in the advertisement.

“Let that sink in, and don’t be a damn bit afraid of saying it, because that’s exactly who he is.”

Trump visited Erie County last month, where he railed against Harris, telling the crowd that she should be “impeached and prosecuted” for her handling of the southern border and suggested that “one really violent day” would quell crime in American cities.

As Election Day draws near, Harris has been goading

Trump about his mental fitness, attacks that have intensified amid his rambling speeches at rallies.

Harris, who has insisted that Trump agree to a second debate, has maintained that he is hiding from engaging in normal campaign activity, like a “60 Minutes” interview. Over the weekend, she released her medical records, which found her in “excellent health,” and used another rally to question why Trump has not released his.

“It makes you wonder, why does his staff want him to hide away?” she said during a rally in North Carolina on Sunday. “One must question, are they afraid that people will see that he is too weak and unstable to lead America? Is that what’s going on?”

But during the rally, Harris also drew one line when it came to her opponent. After quoting him as saying that he wanted to “terminate the Constitution,” the crowd began chanting, “Lock him up.”

“Here’s the thing: The courts will handle that,” she said. “Let’s handle November, shall we?”

2 men posing as utility workers are arrested in murder of 72-year-old

Two men posing as utility workers looking for a gas leak killed a man and bound his wife with duct tape after being admitted to their home in an upscale Detroit suburb Friday, authorities in Michigan said.

One man, Carlos Jose Hernandez, 37, of Dearborn, Michigan, was arrested after being stopped by the police in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Saturday, according to a news release from the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office. The other, whose name has not been released, was stopped and arrested in Plymouth Township, Michigan, on Monday, according to a Facebook post from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Killed in the attack was Hussein Murray, 72, a business owner. His wife, also 72, was briefly hospitalized and was later released, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The woman’s phone and watch were taken during the attack, according to Karen McDonald, the Oakland County prosecutor.

Authorities said that the two intruders, in search of valuables, had first tried to talk their way into the home in Rochester Hills, Michigan, about 10 p.m. Thursday but that the couple had not admitted them. The men indicated that they would return in the morning and then did so, McDonald said.

Footage of the Thursday night encounter released by the sheriff’s office from the couple’s Ring camera shows a man who authorities said was Hernandez at the couple’s doorstep in a yellow vest and a mask and holding a clipboard. The other man, also in a yellow vest, stands facing away from the camera.

In the video, the man the authorities identified as Hernandez says they are with DTE, an energy company based in Detroit, and turns his clipboard toward the camera to show a form with the DTE logo.

“We’re checking for gas leaks,” the man says in the video.

When the men returned about 10 a.m. Friday, Murray showed them down to the basement to check for the leak after signing a piece of paper, according to a news release from the Oakland County prosecutor’s office. The two men returned upstairs alone and asked Murray’s wife “where the money and jewelry were,” prosecu-

tors said.

The two men duct-taped the woman’s wrists and ankles, and Hernandez hit her across the face when she began to scream, according to McDonald. After taking the woman’s watch and phone, the men left in a white pickup truck with a DTE logo. The woman was able to free herself enough to call 911, authorities said.

Murray was found dead in the basement with his wrists and ankles duct-taped, according to McDonald. The sheriff’s office said it was unclear whether he had been shot or bludgeoned to death based on his “gruesome” injuries.

The police began a search and released the Ring camera footage to help identify the intruders. Hernandez’s vehicle was seen traveling south on Interstate 49 from Arkansas, and he was arrested in Shreveport, the police in Louisiana said.

Hernandez was charged with felony murder and two counts of unlawful imprisonment. He was also wanted on unrelated armedrobbery warrants issued in Ohio, the police said. If convicted of felony murder, he would face a mandatory sentence of life in prison, the prosecutor’s office said.

The second suspect was expected to be charged in the coming days.

DTE Energy said in a news release that it was rare that a DTE employee would need to enter someone’s home, and the company warned customers to ask employees to show their badges with photo identification. The company said it would usually try to contact customers before making home visits.

Attention Kmart shoppers: It’s closing time

When Chrissy Economos and Gloria McCourtney heard that the last full-size Kmart in the mainland United States was closing down, they knew they had to pay their respects, even if the store was more than 1,300 miles away.

As the shelves were quickly emptying at the Kmart in Bridgehampton, New York, the two sisters remembered the one in Duluth, Minnesota, where they grew up. They went to that store as children in the 1980s with their mother and grandmother, who wrote poetry in the Kmart Cafe. They got their driver’s licenses there and killed time by wandering the aisles as teenagers. Economos bought her first pregnancy test there. And once they had their own children, the sisters would escape to Kmart for their “mom breaks.”

“We would regret it if we didn’t come,” McCourtney, 39, said.

Kmart was once America’s leading discount store, famous for its “Blue Light Specials” for in-store customers. “Attention Kmart shoppers!” became a catchphrase, uttered by Johnny Carson and Beetlejuice.

A store employee arranges bags for sale at the Kmart in Bridgehampton, N.Y., on Oct. 2, 2024. When the store closes on Oct. 20, 2024, it will leave just one small store in Miami, crammed into what was once the garden center of a larger Kmart, and a handful on Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. (Andrew Kelly/The New York Times)

Now, at the Bridgehampton store, the announcements seemed stuck in a pandemic-era time warp: Shoppers were asked to stay safe by masking up and social distancing.

After decades of decline, Kmart has now largely disappeared, living on in comedy bits or classic films like “Rain Man,” where Dustin Hoffman’s character only gets his boxer shorts at Kmart in Cincinnati. The closure of the store in Bridgehampton on Sunday will leave just one small store in Miami, crammed into what was once the garden center of a much larger Kmart, and a handful on Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The news of the Bridgehampton closure drew lapsed and loyal customers alike back to the store’s drab interior, not just for the liquidation sale — everything must go! — but also to mourn and reminisce. Some shoppers honored the store by milling the aisles, while others filled their carts with discounted cologne, L.O.L. Surprise! sticker books and household products. Online, Kmart fans have long been eulogizing the retailer on Facebook and the Kmart subreddit.

“It’s just this weird nostalgia for us,” said McCourtney, who was wearing Kmart Joe Boxer leggings and shares half of a “Kmart 4 Eva” tattoo on her forearm with a friend. When she imagines something peaceful, she thinks of wandering Kmart.

“Walking the aisles of Kmart just made me so calm and happy,” McCourtney said. She looked at her sister, adding: “Probably because I was always doing it with you.”

“Everything Must Go!”

One recent Wednesday afternoon, customers streamed in and out of the Bridgehampton Kmart, past the yellow signs

with thick red letters shouting: “Everything Must Go!,” “Store Closing Sale” and “Nothing Held Back!” Customers carried mesh bags of firewood and handfuls of sponges, or pushed carts full of toilet paper. They asked one another about the sales inside, and swapped stories about how handy Kmart was for greeting cards, layaways and small gifts to take to someone’s home over the holidays or for parties.

“Boy, they’re knocking down fast,” said Gerri MacWhinnie, 80, as she loaded stocking stuffers, cat food and other items into the trunk of her car.

Like many local customers, MacWhinnie, who lives in Southampton, wonders what will move into the nearly 90,000-square-foot space. Bridgehampton, on the tony eastern end of Long Island, one of the country’s most expensive ZIP codes, doesn’t have other big box stores. The closest Walmart and Target are at least a 45-minute drive away.

“This was really the only place it felt like you could get kind of affordable clothes,” said Dana Casale, 46, who grew up in Sag Harbor and still has shirts she bought from Kmart 10 years ago. “Public transportation comes here, which is kind of a big deal. It’s hard to get that to go anywhere.”

Inside, closeout sale posters overwhelmed the store. Pop music from the 1980s and ’90s played over the speakers. Customers strolled past discounted Kenmore washing machines, dryers, refrigerators and dishwashers on the display floor. An empty area cordoned off by yellow caution tape had missing tiles where patches of dirt floor remained, and bare mannequins stood stashed together. Shoppers scribbled in the layers of dust that caked a Craftsman YT 3000 red lawn mower sitting out near the pet clothes with a yellow “sold” sticker on it. They

debated whether the prices might drop. Transformco, Kmart’s parent company, did not respond to requests for comment from The New York Times. A Kmart manager said that staff members were not authorized to speak with the Times when a reporter and photographer visited the store Oct. 2.

Once unstoppable, a chain became understocked and understaffed.

The first Kmart opened in 1962 in Garden City, Michigan, though the company’s roots go back much further, to a chain of S.S. Kresge variety stores that started in Michigan in 1899. Kmarts quickly spread across the country by offering everything from food to fashion, according to Mark Cohen, former CEO of Sears Canada. “They grew to be an enormous feature in retailing back in the day,” Cohen said. By 1986, Kmart had become the country’s leading discounter and its second-largest retailer, behind Sears. Kmart fell victim to executive mismanagement, Cohen said, and failed to compete with Walmart’s low prices, Target’s stylish branding and, later, the rise of Amazon. Once an unstoppable giant that carried brands including Martha Stewart and Jaclyn Smith, Kmart’s stores became understocked, understaffed and neglected.

In 2002, Kmart — which then had 2,114 stores and 240,000 employees — filed for bankruptcy, at the time the largest-ever filing for a retailer.

In 2005, Kmart merged with Sears, also in rapid decline. The move nearly wiped out both brands. Sears Holdings, their parent company, filed for bankruptcy in 2018, and Kmart continued shuttering its stores.

Nostalgia for Kmart’s heyday set in as the company collapsed. In 2015, fans swooned over the release of four years’ worth of in-store music and announcements that were preserved by a former employee, Mark Davis, and uploaded to Archive.org.

“It is the final chapter in the great American story of success and failure,” Cohen said.

UBS lifts year-end target for S&P 500 to 5,850 points

UBS Global Research on Tuesday raised its year-end target for the benchmark S&P 500 index to 5,850 points from an earlier projection of 5,600, boosted by corporate profit growth, supportive macro-economic backdrop and interest rate cuts.

The index, which has gained 22.85% so far in 2024, jumped to a record closing high of 5,859.85 points a day earlier.

“Rate cuts should lower interest expense and default risk, adding to both EPS (earnings-per-share) and valuations,” analysts led by Jonathan Golub said.

“Financial conditions point to less stress/more liquidity, a positive for valuations,” they added.

UBS also raised its 2025 year-end target for the S&P 500 to 6,400 from 6,000 earlier. Strength in technology stocks could help the index further, it said.

The U.S. central bank in September kicked off an anticipated series of interest rate cuts with a larger-than-usual half-percentage-point reduction that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said was meant to show commitment to sustaining a low unemployment rate as inflation had eased.

UBS expects the Fed to cut rates by 250 basis points through 2026 and said a sharp decline in interest rates could likely lift profit margins by 20 basis points.

Wall Street’s major stock indexes closed lower on Tuesday, with a 1% drop in the technology-heavy Nasdaq leading losses as chip stocks tumbled on demand concerns while the energy sector fell 3% as oil prices dropped.

Earnings reports were a mixed bag with positive reactions to some financial services results contrasting with an 8% slump in shares of UnitedHealth after the health insurer forecast 2025 profit below Wall Street estimates.

The Nasdaq came under particular pressure from market heavyweight Nvidia, the leading chip maker for artificial intelligence. Nvidia shares fell 4.7% after scoring a record-high

MOST ASSERTIVE STOCKS

close on Monday and after a media report that the Biden administration is considering capping AI chip exports by U.S. companies.

Chip stocks lost ground broadly after results of chipequipment-maker ASML Holdings showed downbeat expectations for 2025 sales. ASML’s U.S.-listed shares

“There seems to be a lot more stress concentrated in chips. This is putting downward pressure on technology as a sector,” said Kevin Gordon, senior investment strategist at Charles Schwab.

But while Gordon saw weaker-than-expected earnings as an excuse to sell off chip stocks, he was encouraged that there were roughly as many stocks advancing as declining on the Nasdaq.

Lebanon’s hospitals buckle amid Israel’s offensive against Hezbollah

It was 12:54 a.m., and Elie Hachem had not slept in days when the chief nurse at his Beirut hospital called him in a panic.

The Israeli military had announced that it would begin striking “Hezbollah facilities” in the area, and had ordered the hospital to evacuate. Dozens of staff members and patients were still inside, among them premature babies hooked up to incubators, Hachem said.

“We only had 20 minutes,” he said, describing the events this month at St. Therese Hospital, where he is the director, on the outskirts of Beirut. “Maybe less.”

The airstrike landed just 80 yards from the hospital and caused heavy damage, collapsing ceilings and flooding parts of the health facility, though no one was harmed, Hachem said.

The next day, fearing their luck would run out, Hachem ordered the Christian hospital shut down. “The staff are traumatized,” he said.

St. Therese is near Dahiya, a densely packed civilian area adjoining Beirut where Hezbollah holds sway and which has been pounded by Israeli airstrikes. It is one of at least nine hospitals in Lebanon that are now shuttered or only partly functional, according to the World Health Organization.

The United Nations said some hospitals had shut down after they were damaged in attacks. Others have been abandoned after staff members fled, fearing for their safety. The ones that remain operational say they are quickly running out of beds as patients evacuated from other facilities are brought in.

Last month, Israel mounted a major offensive in Lebanon, targeting the leaders of Hezbollah, the Shiite militant and political group, and destroying much of its arsenal. The bombing has forced nearly 1 million people to leave their homes.

Hezbollah began launching rockets at Israeli positions in support of the Hamas-led attack of Oct. 7, 2023. The Lebanese group and the Israeli military traded blows back and forth over the past year, displacing communities on both sides of the border.

U.N. officials say Israel’s large-scale airstrikes are “indiscriminate,” and the escalating attacks have overwhelmed Lebanon’s beleaguered health system. More than 2,300 people have been killed and over 10,000 injured in Lebanon since the conflict began a year ago, with a vast majority of the casualties in the last three weeks, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.

The Israeli military has accused Hezbollah of embedding itself in civilian infrastructure, including hospitals. Lebanese officials have denied that claim and Hezbollah has denied operating in civilian sites. The Israeli strike that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, as well as other strikes in which Hezbollah leaders have been killed, were in Dahiya.

Rafik Hariri University Hospital, the largest public hospital in Lebanon, which has been inundated with patients evacuated from other health facilities, near Beirut, Oct. 12, 2024. Amid Israel’s offensive against Hezbollah, the United Nations says “the targeting of health and relief operations is broadening” in Lebanon, with hospitals shutting down or struggling to operate.

(Diego Ibarra Sánchez/The New York Times)

Since the conflict with Hezbollah intensified three weeks ago, the WHO says it has recorded 16 attacks on Lebanon’s health sector in which 65 workers were killed. The United Nations’ human rights office said that hospitals, clinics and ambulances had all been struck amid the war.

“We need assurances that my staff are safe and my patients are safe,” Hachem said. “I don’t want to close the hospital. The community needs us.”

Staff members worked around the clock for days to repair the damage from the strike early this month, he said. Making the repairs was a huge financial burden for the private hospital, he added, since it has received little funding from Lebanon’s strapped government.

Still, by last Sunday afternoon, they were prepared to reopen. Then, without warning, another Israeli airstrike landed nearby — damaging the hospital once again, Hachem said.

“I’m back to square one,” he said.

Lebanon’s health minister, Firass Abiad, condemned Is-

raeli strikes on health facilities.

“This is not something that is happening as an act of nature,” Abiad said in an interview. “Civilians are not only targeted but are being prevented from receiving help.”

The U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Lebanon, Imran Riza, said this month that “the targeting of health and relief operations is broadening,” calling such attacks “serious violations” of international humanitarian law.

The Israeli military said Thursday that it “strikes solely on the base of military necessity.” The military added, without presenting evidence, that Hezbollah has “increased their abuse of emergency rescue vehicles” like ambulances to transport fighters and other members in recent days, making them, in Israel’s view, legitimate targets. Lebanese officials and hospital directors have denied those claims.

Hospitals in southern Lebanon, where the Israeli military is conducting its ground invasion, have been particularly affected. At least three major hospitals in the region — once serving many thousands of people — have been shut because they were damaged or the staff had fled.

Many of the patients have been transferred to Rafik Hariri University Hospital, the country’s largest public hospital. It lies on the outskirts of Dahiya, and so far has not been directly hit.

For weeks, the surrounding area has been pounded by Israeli airstrikes, depopulating the once-bustling streets and reducing entire apartment buildings to rubble. The Israeli military has been targeting Hezbollah. But caught in the middle, health facilities wonder if they might soon come under fire.

“We are anticipating the worst,” said Dr. Jihad Saadeh, director of the Rafik Hariri hospital.

Staff members were exhausted, he said, with some sleeping in the hospital. Others were too afraid to come to work — fearing airstrikes on their commutes or that their families might be killed or injured while they were away from home. The hospital has 550 beds but is fast approaching capacity as patients arrive from other health centers.

“Everything has limits,” he said. “If this continues, it will be full.”

Saadeh has worked through wars before. He began his medical career in 1982, the same year of another Israeli invasion of Lebanon. He said the strain on Lebanon’s health system today was much like 2006, when Israel and Hezbollah last fought a major conflict — killing more than 1,000 people in Lebanon, mostly civilians.

The number of dead in recent weeks has already surpassed that figure.

“The streets are not safe,” Saadeh said.

Russia is clawing back land taken by Ukraine this summer

Russia has recaptured a few villages in its western borderlands that Ukraine invaded over the summer, threatening Kyiv’s hold on territory it views as crucial leverage for pushing Moscow toward negotiations to end the war.

In recent days, Russian troops have intensified efforts to dislodge Ukrainian forces from the bulge of territory they seized in Russia’s western Kursk region, launching several assaults spearheaded by armored vehicles. Battlefield maps compiled by independent groups using satellite images and combat footage indicate that Russian forces have driven a wedge into the western edge of the Ukrainian bulge, recapturing at least three villages.

“In general, the situation in Kursk is not so good,” DeepState, a group with close ties to the Ukrainian army that analyzes combat footage, said Sunday. Ukrainian forces “are taking stabilization measures, but it is extremely difficult to reclaim what has been lost.”

Emil Kastehelmi, a military analyst for the Finland-based Black Bird Group, said that some elements of Russian units had “managed to advance relatively far into

Ukrainian soldiers in a tank near Sumy, Ukraine, driving on the main road near the Russian border toward the Kursk region on Aug. 12, 2024. the Ukrainian rear, which caused issues and losses for Ukraine.”

To be sure, Ukraine still holds roughly 300 square miles of Russian territory, according to the Black Bird Group, down from about 400 square miles in the first weeks of its cross-border assault in the Kursk region, which was launched in early August.

The offensive had two primary objectives: to force the Kremlin to divert troops from other parts of the front to respond to the attack, thereby easing pressure on Ukrainian forces; and to capture territory that Moscow will seek to reclaim, potentially forcing it to come to the negotiating table.

While the first goal appears to have failed so far — with the Kremlin mainly deploying reserves from within Russia while intensifying assaults in eastern Ukraine — officials in Kyiv have clung to the second goal as part of their so-called “victory plan” to push Russia into peace negotiations.

The Kursk offensive is one of “the stages to end the war,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a news conference in late August.

But each Russian advance in the Kursk region risks diminishing the value of this bargaining chip.

“The Russian counterattacks are constantly reducing the political significance of the Ukrainian-controlled area

in Kursk,” Kastehelmi said. “If the current trend continues, the Ukrainians may need to reconsider their presence in the area and the future of the whole operation.”

Ukraine first invaded the Kursk region on Aug. 6, swiftly capturing dozens of villages and settlements, including the small town of Sudzha. It took Russia several weeks to stabilize the situation by sending in reinforcements to halt the Ukrainian advance. Military analysts and U.S. officials said Russia’s response was initially slow and scattered as the Kremlin determined which military and security forces should lead the counterattacks.

Then, in mid-September, Russia launched a first wave of counterattacks that allowed its troops to capture at least one village, Snagost, and several other settlements located on the western flank of the Ukrainian bulge.

It launched a second wave of assaults last week, pushing farther on the western flank and reclaiming about 20 square miles of territory, according to independent experts tracking the Russian advance based on geolocated combat footage. They have now recaptured the village of Novoivanovka and have reached the outskirts of the village of Olgovka.

Ukrainian officials and soldiers have generally been tight-lipped about the situation in the Kursk region in order to preserve operational security. But Zelenskyy acknowledged the intense fighting in a

message posted on social media Monday.

“For five days now, the Russians have been trying to break through our defenses in the Kursk region,” he wrote, adding that Ukrainian troops are “holding on and counterattacking.”

Kastehelmi, the military expert, took a more cautious view. “It’s clear that the Ukrainian lines don’t seem to hold very well,” he said.

He noted that Ukraine’s army does not appear yet to have built any largescale fortifications in the area, complicating its defense, and added that the western flank currently under Russian attack consists of relatively open terrain, with few urban centers that the Ukrainians can use to entrench themselves in.

The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, said last week that the Russian military may have intensified its assaults in the Kursk region before rainy weather in the fall and winter make the terrain muddy and therefore less practicable for assaults with armored vehicles, leaving more time for the Ukrainians to fortify their positions in the area.

“Russian forces may perceive a closing window of opportunity to eliminate the Ukrainian incursion” into the Kursk region, the institute said.

Whether Ukraine will manage to hold on to the territory it controls in the Kursk region remains to be seen.

The Ukrainian offensive there has stretched its human and materiel resources, which are sorely needed elsewhere on the front to fend off Russian attacks that continue unabated.

A senior U.S. military official said early this month, before Russia’s latest counterattacks, that Ukraine would be able to maintain its position there for “several months and potentially beyond” because Moscow suffers from logistical issues and disorganization of the command structure in the area. He spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive security issues.

Ukraine might hope to use the territory it holds in the Kursk region as a bargaining chip in peace negotiations, to trade for land seized by Russia in Ukraine. But Moscow has yet to signal any willingness to engage in talks while it has the upper hand on the battlefield.

A reporter’s shield law is vital to prevent abuses of power

Governments often chafe at the presence of a free press. The reason is simple: A robust and independent news media keeps a sharp eye on government and, when necessary, exposes abuse of power, corruption, incompetence and waste.

Exposing such things depends, of course, not just on journalists but also on brave officials willing to sound the alarm about government misconduct. Even when their disclosures are clearly in the public interest, these whistleblowers — or sources, in the journalistic parlance — often hide their identities to avoid punishment or retaliation. In this way, bringing essential information to the public often depends on protecting the identity of the person sharing it.

Safeguarding the anonymity of reporters’ sources is essential in the exercise of this critical role, a need that several federal courts have found is implicit in the First Amendment. It has been recognized by governments or courts in 49 states and the District of Columbia as a form of protection for journalists and news outlets against unfair or overbearing efforts by government to ferret out their sources, punish whistleblowers and scare off others who might consider speaking up about wrongdoing.

There is nothing of the sort, however, on the federal level, where the need is arguably greatest, in part because of the rapid evolution of electronic snooping and the fallout of sharply polarized politics. Having a federal law on the books would provide a higher level of protection than the recognition now

provided by most federal circuit courts.

That could change before the year is out if the Senate Judiciary Committee releases a strong bipartisan bill that has already sailed unopposed twice, in this session and the last, through the House of Representatives. Called the Protect Reporters From Exploitative State Spying Act, or PRESS Act, it would shield reporters from court-ordered disclosure of their sources of information, except in the rare cases in which disclosure is necessary to prevent an act of terrorism or imminent violence.

The New York Times is clearly not a disinterested bystander on this issue. It is this board’s conviction, shared by most independent news media, that governmental restrictions on freedoms of the press are a certain route to abuse of power and authoritarianism. The Times and its reporters have been involved in numerous legal battles to ensure that the press remains free and independent.

But this is not purely a matter of press versus government. This law would effectively protect those who serve the public interest by blowing the whistle on government wrongdoing. And it would help protect all Americans, who deserve nothing less than the full truth about the officials they elect and the government they fund.

The nation’s founders saw freedom of expression as a critical component of democracy. George Washington’s formulation is almost biblical: “The freedom of speech may be taken away, and dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep, to the slaughter.”

Today, every member of the House, some themselves targets of sharp investigative reporting or frequent critics of the news media, has supported swift passage of the PRESS bill. There are three Republican sponsors of the bill in the Senate, but it is opposed by a small clutch of conservative senators — most notably Tom Cotton, a hard-right Republican from Arkansas — attempting to keep the legislation bottled up in the Judiciary Committee.

Cotton’s argument is that the PRESS Act would open a floodgate to leaks that would undermine law enforcement and national security. That argument, however, is based not on evidence but on a visceral hostility to the news media, which he has made clear he views largely as an ideological foe. Too many reporters, he said in a statement, are “little more than left-wing activists who are, at best, ambivalent about America and who are cavalier about our security and the truth.”

Leaks and whistleblowers have often proved essential to the public’s understanding of major events and the workings of government at all levels. There is nothing ideological about their usefulness; they can be just as effective in exposing the unwelcome truth about Democratic administrations as Republican ones. By protecting reporters from having to reveal their sources, the bill would ideally encourage more whistleblowers to help shine a light on government abuses.

Administrations of both parties — and especially those of Barack Obama and Donald Trump — have tried varying means to block leaks that would be in the public interest and to pressure reporters into revealing their sources. Attorney General Merrick Garland ended these

abuses for the duration of President Joe Biden’s administration, announcing that the Justice Department would no longer dig through the phone records of reporters to identify sources for leak investigations. Without a law in place, though, a future administration could easily reinstate that practice.

Nothing in the PRESS Act would prevent the government from prosecuting leakers, and the government has vast powers to monitor its officials without demanding that reporters divulge the information they seek.

There is no evidence that states with press shield laws have been hamstrung in combating crime, and the federal government has identified and prosecuted major leakers without information coerced from reporters. The Obama administration spent years trying to force reporter James Risen, formerly of the Times, to identify his source for a book in which he detailed a failed CIA plan to undermine Iran’s nuclear program. Though required by a subpoena to testify, Risen steadfastly refused to identify his source and was not compelled to do so. The leaker was arrested and imprisoned anyway.

The PRESS Act would not protect journalists who violate laws to acquire information, and the exceptions for national security are broad. But hostility toward the news media in the polarized politics of the day makes it more urgent than ever to ensure that reporters can continue to pursue their essential role as watchdogs over the government without the threat of courtordered demands for their sources and information. The PRESS Act is needed now.

Your favorite horror movie was a much scarier true story

We’re in the Spooky Season. Halloween costume shops have taken over vacant buildings; “Monster Mash” is on our playlists; and, best of all, horror flicks are waiting to be watched.

When we terrify ourselves with scary movies, we calm back down with the reminder: It’s not real, it’s not real, it’s not real.

Except ... when it is.

Some of the most popular movies in the genre are based, with varying accuracy, on true stories. In many cases, the real story is even scarier than Hollywood’s rendition.

(Spoiler alerts galore.)

‘The Exorcist’ (1973)

Green porridge vomit and ’70s makeup production are slightly less frightening than they were in 1973, when audience members fainted during screenings of “The Exorcist.” But the film’s origin story is just as terrifying.

In 1949, a couple living in the Washington, D.C., area noticed that their 14-year-old son was behaving strangely. Robbie, a pseudonym used in news coverage, recited Latin phrases, despite never having learned the language, and had strange etchings on his body; his bed and other items around him shook or moved inexplicably, The Washington Post wrote.

Believing Robbie had been possessed by a demon, the family traveled to St. Louis and sought help from Jesuit pastors at St. Louis University. One of them, the Rev. William Bowdern, would conduct a 35-day-long exorcism that was widely covered by news organizations.

Unlike in the film, which won two Oscars, there was no head spinning or floating involved, said Henry Ansgar Kelly, a professor at UCLA who interviewed Bowdern in 1960. In the film, it was a young girl instead of a boy, and Washington instead of St. Louis.

But there were some similarities: The priests involved have said they witnessed Robbie’s bed shake and move across the room.

Bowdern also told Kelly he saw scratch marks on Robbie’s chest that spelled “HELL.”

Interviews with people involved in Robbie’s exorcism became the basis for the book and the movie. When “The Exorcist” was filmed on Georgetown University’s campus, the set was so rife with accidents — a carpenter lost multiple fingers, and the set mysteriously caught fire — that a Jesuit pastor had to bless it several times.

‘Devil’s Pass’ (2013)

Weeks after they set out on a hike in Russia’s Ural Mountains, a group of nine people was found dead in 1959 in mysterious circumstances.

A search-and-rescue team found their bodies hundreds of yards from their tent — “some barefoot and almost naked” — in an area that was later named Dyatlov Pass after the troop’s leader, Igor Dyatlov, a 23-year-old engineering student, The New York Times reported.

Unexplained radiation was found on some of the clothes. One woman was missing her tongue, while others suffered

blunt-force injuries.

“Why would nine highly experienced hikers leave a perfectly good tent, insufficiently clothed, in subzero conditions and walk a mile to their certain death?” said Donnie Eichar, the author of “Dead Mountain: The Untold True Story of the Dyatlov Pass Incident.”

In the movie “Devil’s Pass,” the answer is that the hikers stumbled upon a secret bunker where the Russian government was testing teleportation technology.

The reality remains complicated: Russian officials have said the deaths resulted from an avalanche. Eichar theorized that it was a swirling wind movement called Karman vortex streets.

“It’s the middle of the night. They were sleeping. They were insufficiently clothed,” Eichar said. “It was a fight-or-flight situation.”

But with no surviving witnesses, questions may remain unanswered.

‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ (1974)

The movie considered seminal to the slasher genre features disturbing scenes such as a man cutting people open with a chain saw and a victim pierced with a meat hook.

Kim Henkel, one of its creators, told Texas Monthly in 2004 that he had studied the cases of Elmer Wayne Henley, a 17-year-old accomplice to Houston serial killer Dean Corll, 33, and another killer, Ed Gein, to develop the film.

Henley, the accomplice to Corll, who was believed to have killed at least 27 people, fatally shot Corll in 1973 and then led police to a storage shed where bodies were found. He also confessed his own role in some of the murders and is serving life in prison.

“This kind of moral schizophrenia is something I tried to

build into the characters,” he told Texas Monthly.

Gein, who confessed to killing two women in Wisconsin in the 1950s and making furniture out of human skin, among other disturbing events, was also the inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.”

‘The Amityville Horror’ (1979)

In December 1975, when the Lutz family moved into a beautiful, five-bedroom home with a swimming pool in the Amityville area of Long Island, the $80,000 price tag seemed like a steal.

“It was a dream come true,” George Lutz told ABC News in 2002.

But the family later learned the reason for the amazing price: Ronald DeFeo had killed six members of his family in that home the year before.

Four weeks after the Lutz family moved in, they “abandoned the house” after one too many paranormal experiences, according to “The Amityville Horror,” a 1977 book by Jay Anson about the family’s time in the home. Strange voices filled the home, and Lutz’s wife was said to be lifted off her feet.

The book and subsequent film adaptations were not totally accurate, Lutz later said. He even sued the 2005 film’s producers for defamation.

‘The Lighthouse’ (2019)

Watch Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson spiral into insanity as they tend to a lighthouse on a mysterious island.

The movie was based on an event known as the Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy.

In 1801, Thomas Howell and Thomas Griffith were hired to tend to the lighthouse on Smalls Island, a tiny scab of rock about 18 miles off the western coast of Wales, Julian Whitewright, a maritime archaeologist in Wales, said in an interview.

But Griffith died suddenly of an illness, according to Stephen Liddell, a tour guide and historian. In such a remote area, Howell had to keep Griffith’s body in his living quarters until the next shift of lighthouse keepers could arrive.

But storms delayed reinforcements, and Howell was stuck alone with Griffith’s deteriorating body, slowly going insane. Howell eventually tied it to the railings along the exterior of the lighthouse, where it stayed for four months until relief finally arrived, Liddell said.

Director Robert Eggers’ version of the tale, “The Lighthouse,” took creative license and was more of a psychological, slowburn thriller.

One of the world’s loneliest countries finds companionship in dogs

“In this age of mistrust and loneliness, dogs show you what unconditional love is,” said Kim’s 41-year-old daughter, Kim Suhyeon, who raised two dogs but has no plans for children. “A human child may talk back and rebel, but dogs follow you like you are the center of the universe.”

Kim Kyeong-sook, 63, whose 18-yearold dachshund, Kangyi, was cremated on the same day as Dalkong, agreed. “When I left home, he saw me off at the door until it was closed behind me,” she said. “When I returned, he was always there, going crazy as if I were coming home from war overseas.”

The boom in pet services has changed the country’s urban landscape. Hospitals and shops catering to pets have become ubiquitous, while childbirth clinics have all but disappeared, as South Korea’s birthrate has become the lowest in the world. In parks and neighborhoods, strollers are more often than not carrying dogs. Online shopping malls say they sell more baby carriages for dogs than for babies.

shelter four years ago.

“Liam is like a child to me,” said Sim, 34, who does not plan to get married or have children. “I love him the way my mom loved me. I eat old food in the refrigerator, saving the freshest chicken breast for Liam.”

Her mother, Park Young-seon, 66, said she felt sad that many young women had chosen not to have babies. But she said she had come to accept Liam as “my grandson.”

On a recent weekend, the mother and daughter joined six other families who took their dogs on a picnic to Mireuksa, a Buddhist temple in central South Korea. So-called temple stays are a way for ordinary people to meditate and enjoy the monastic quiet. Now, some temples encourage families to bring their dogs along. All participants, human and canine, wear gray Buddhist vests and rosaries.

The deceased lay wrapped in a cotton blanket, surrounded by white roses and hydrangea, angelic figurines and lit candles and incense. A wall-mounted screen displayed photographs of him. His 71-yearold companion, Kim Seon-ae, convulsed with tears as she bid farewell, caressing his head and face. Next door, young uniformed morticians prepared for his cremation.

The elaborate and emotional ritual was for a white poodle named Dalkong, who was nestled in a willow basket with his eyes still open.

“He was like a virus that infected me with happiness,” said Kim, who had lived with Dalkong for 13 years until he succumbed to heart disease. “We were family.”

Not long ago, South Korea often made global headlines — and raised the ire of animal rights groups — for its tradition of breeding dogs for meat. But in recent years, people here have gravitated toward pets, especially dogs. They are looking for companionship at a time when more South Koreans are choosing to stay single, childless or both. More than two-fifths of all households in the nation now consist of only one person.

The COVID-19 pandemic also did much to bring pets into homes, as people

cooped up indoors adopted dogs and cats from shelters and the streets.

Now, 1 of 4 families in South Korea has a pet, up from 17.4% in 2010, according to government estimates. Most of them are dogs. (The Korean numbers are still low compared with the United States, where about 62% of homes have a pet, according to a survey last year by the Pew Research Center.)

Politically, dogs have led to a rare case of bipartisanship in a country that is increasingly polarized. In January, lawmakers passed a law that banned the country’s centuries-old practice of breeding and butchering dogs for human consumption.

Now, dogs are family members that get splurged on.

Sim Na-jeong says she wears an old, $38 padded jacket but has bought $150 jackets for Liam, a jindo she adopted from a

“I feel more attached to my dogs than to my husband,” said Kang Hyeon-ji, 31, who got married last October and was there with her spouse and two snow-white Pomeranians. Her husband, Kim Sang-baek, 32, shrugged with an embarrassed smile.

Seok Jeong-gak, the head monk of the temple, patted her own dog, Hwaeom, as she preached that humans and dogs were just souls wearing different “shells” in this cycle of life, who may switch shells in their next incarnation. As the sermon went on under a large canvas shade in a temple lawn, Liam was busy licking his paw.

The visitors had booked the temple stay through Banlife, a smartphone app that helps people find pet-friendly restaurants, resorts and temples.

“When I started my business in 2019, people doubted that many would take pets on vacation,” said Lee Hyemi, who runs Banlife. “Now there are people who not just walk their dogs but do everything with them.”

The growing industry surrounding pets has an underbelly: Last year, animal welfare activists led the authorities to raid a puppy mill and rescue 1,400 dogs kept there under cruel conditions. Officials found dozens of dog carcasses in freezers.

As shocking as the episode was, the government’s role in rescuing the dogs and finding them shelters also reflected the country’s shifting attitude toward animal rights. At the National Assembly, lawmakers have proposed new legislation that would ban the auctioning of puppies and tighten other regulations for dog breeders.

Ranking the 4 remaining possible World Series matchups

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor is seen during the Major League Baseball preseason back in March. Now, in October, Lindor and the Mets are vying for a chance to return to the World Series to face either their crosstown rivals, the Yankees, or Lindor’s former team, the Cleveland Guardians (named the Indians when he last played for them). (Wikipedia)

We are one round away from the World Series in what has been a captivating postseason, with dreams dashed, legacies smashed and a bunch of did-he-really-do-that home runs bashed. Along the way, we have seen 32 potential title matchups disappear, like Marty McFly’s fading family photo in “Back to the Future.” Turns out that a Philadelphia PhilliesBaltimore Orioles rematch just wasn’t our density — er, destiny — this time. We will say it again: Every matchup is fascinating in its own way, and plenty of unusual pairings (say, Minnesota Twins-Atlanta Braves from 1991 or St. Louis Cardinals-Texas Rangers 20 years later) have made indelible marks in baseball history. But now that we are down to four possibilities, let’s rank them.

1. New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Past matchups: Yankees won in 1941, 1947, 1949, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1977, 1978; Dodgers won in 1955, 1963, 1981.

Once upon a time, MLB’s most valuable players met regularly in October. In the first 50 seasons of the modern MVP award, from 1931 to 1980, the National and American League MVPs faced off in the World Series 24 times. It happened again in 1988, when the winners did big things in the opener: José Canseco hit a grand slam for the Oakland Athletics, and Kirk Gibson hit a walk-off home run at the end.

We have had wild-card teams in the post-

season since 1995. And guess what has nearly disappeared since then: those World Series matchups between MVPs. It has happened only once in the past 29 seasons, when Buster Posey’s San Francisco Giants swept Miguel Cabrera’s Detroit Tigers in 2012.

Let’s assume that Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani win the MVP awards next month. And let’s take another crazy guess that Judge and Ohtani wind up in the Hall of Fame someday.

How cool would it be for future Hall of Famers to make their World Series debuts against each other, both after an MVP regular season? In other words: all-time greats, after great seasons, sharing their World Series debuts. It is pretty special and nearly unprecedented.

It has happened only once before, in 1980, when Mike Schmidt’s Phillies beat George Brett’s Kansas City Royals in six games. The last game of that World Series scored a 40.0 rating, the highest in World Series history.

Nothing on television scores a rating like that anymore, at least not without a concert in the middle and a Lombardi trophy at the end. And die-hard fans should not care about ratings anyway; we will watch no matter who plays. But it is always good for the health of the sport when a lot of people pay attention.

Judge vs. Ohtani would do that. They are the best sluggers in the world: one with the skill to play center field, the other with elite speed on the bases and, just maybe, a chance to pitch in relief. The Dodgers drew the most fans in the majors. The Yankees drew the most fans in the American League.

Yes, they pay a lot for their rosters, far more than most teams. But the historical echoes would be palpable here, and the teams have not met in the World Series in 43 years. It is time to revive the best October rivalry with the biggest stars we’ve got.

2. Yankees vs. New York Mets

Past matchups: Yankees won in 2000.

Look, we understand. It would be terribly selfish of New York City to keep the World Series all to itself. But it is not like any other region is in a position to pull this off. The party-planning committee is not meeting in Chicago any time soon. The Dodgers always show up, but the other team in the Los Angeles area, the Angels, have the longest playoff drought in the majors. The Washington Nationals have struggled for half a decade in the Beltway, and the A’s, alas, have bolted the Bay Area.

So it is up to New York to host intracity autumn madness, something we do not often see anymore. And this would be a treat. The

high-energy Mets are finding out that they are made for the spotlight, where the Yankees always live. Two engaging superstars — Francisco Lindor and Judge — are chasing their first championship. Two others, Pete Alonso and Juan Soto, will have a chance for a final flourish before free agency.

The storylines would be endless. The hype would be, too. You might hate New York, but if you look away from this World Series, you would be missing out on a whole lot of fun.

3. Cleveland Guardians vs. Mets

Past matchups: Never.

The last time Lindor came to bat in the World Series, in Cleveland in 2016, he had a chance to be Bill Mazeroski. Bottom of the ninth inning, Game 7, tie score. Home run wins the World Series. Every kid’s dream. Lindor could have spoiled the Chicago Cubs’ fairy tale. Instead, he flied out, and the Cubs soon took the crown.

Cleveland’s team name has been changed to the Guardians now, and Lindor is a Met. Their World Series reunion would be an inescapable subplot of this matchup, but the bigger draw would be the yearning of the fans.

Every other pairing would feature a team with a championship in this century. This one pits a club that has waited 38 years against another that has gone twice as long. The Mets last won the World Series in 1986, with two losses since then (2000 and 2015). Cleveland last reigned in 1948, with four defeats since (1954, 1995, 1997 and 2016).

Five franchises have never won a title, but they have all gone home for the winter: Colorado Rockies, Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays. Of the other 25, Cleveland has the longest drought by more than three decades, at 76 years.

A Mets victory would be cathartic for their fans, too. But Cleveland has already helped soothe the pain of the Cubs’ faithful. The Guardians would rather stay out of the Mets’ forever highlights.

4. Guardians vs. Dodgers

Past matchups: Cleveland won in 1920. It is not quite a first-time matchup, but it is safe to say that nobody alive remembers the last one, in 1920. The World Series was best-of-nine then, Bill Wambsganss turned an unassisted triple play, and spitballs were still legal — at least for Hall of Famer Stan Coveleski, who went 3-0 with three complete games for Cleveland.

A modern clash would be more of a bullpen battle; both teams removed their starters from shutouts during their division series

clinchers — the Guardians after two innings, the Dodgers after five — and neither team pushed a starter beyond 5 1/3 innings in any of the games.

Not that bullpen games are bad — overpowering short relievers deserve love, too — but they force us to recalibrate our concepts of pitching greatness. Among position players, however, this series would have several nodoubt greats, including Cleveland’s heartbeat, José Ramírez, and a few one-name Dodgers — Shohei, Mookie (Betts) and Freddie (Freeman) — who combine to make roughly $20 million more (in average annual salary) than Cleveland’s entire roster.
