Hazardous ‘Lifestyle Habits’

GOOD MORNING

Study finds heart health risk among Puerto Rico’s teens & young adults

Astudy published by the Journal of the American Heart Association (AHA) has found that young adults in Puerto Rico may have less-than-ideal cardiovascular health due to lifestyle behaviors that could increase their risk of heart disease and stroke later in life.

The study found that nearly 3 out of 4 adults on the island ages 18 to 29 had suboptimal cardiovascular health scores because of low scores for healthy eating, physical activity and body mass index. It is the first to focus on the cardiovascular health of adults in the U.S. territory using risk metrics known as Life’s Essential 8, a statement from the AHA noted.

“Young adulthood is a very important phase in terms of when young adults establish their lifelong lifestyle habits,” said the study’s co-lead author Dr. Milagros Rosal, vice provost for health equity at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School in Worcester. “Being able to understand how stable this cardiovascular risk or cardiovascular health score is, the factors that contribute to the deterioration and what things could potentially improve cardiovascular health” are critical questions for this population.

Among Hispanic adults in the U.S. who are 20 and older, 52% of men and 37% of women have cardiovascular disease, according to AHA numbers. Previous research has shown subpar cardiovascular health among U.S. adults ages 18 to 44 and young Puerto Rican adults in the continental U.S., and a previous but smaller study found the same for Puerto Rican adults ages 18 to 23 living in the island’s main metropolitan areas of San Juan and Caguas, according to an AHA statement.

“The studies that have been conducted in the U.S. indicate that cardiovascular health is suboptimal among young adults, so we wanted to check whether the same pattern applied to Puerto Ricans on the island,” said co-lead author Cynthia M.

Pérez, a professor in the department of biostatistics and epidemiology at the University of Puerto Rico Graduate School of Public Health in San Juan.

Filling this knowledge gap is essential, according to the study’s authors, because of the high prevalence of obesity, physical inactivity and smoking among young adults in Puerto Rico – lifestyle factors that increase their risk of cardiovascular disease, the statement said.

Researchers examined data collected from 2020 to 2023 for 2,162 participants in PR-OUTLOOK, an ongoing study of the relationship between stress and cardiovascular risk factors among adults 18 to 29 in Puerto Rico. Each participant was scored using Life Essential 8, a set of lifestyle behaviors and health factors identified by the AHA to improve and maintain good cardiovascular health. It is composed of diet quality, physical activity, nicotine exposure (including vaping), sleep duration, BMI (a ratio of weight to height), and levels of non-HDL (“bad”) cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose. Overall scores were then categorized as ideal, intermediate or poor.

About 27% of the participants had an ideal overall score, 69% were intermediate, and nearly 4% were poor. Although a majority of participants had high ideal scores for blood glucose level, nicotine exposure, sleep duration, non-HDL cholesterol and blood pressure, they had poor scores for diet quality, physical activity and BMI.

“We also determined significant sex differences in overall cardiovascular health and in four of the eight cardiovascular health components,” Pérez said.

Nearly 30% of women had an overall ideal cardiovascular health score compared to 24% of men, she noted.

“Men had lower nicotine exposure, lower non-HDL cholesterol and higher blood pressure, whereas women had lower physical activity scores,” she said.

Olveen Carrasquillo, a professor of medicine and public health sciences at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, said he was glad the researchers are collecting data on cardiovascular health in Puerto Rico, which he said is often overlooked in national health surveys.

The findings show that “you do have a lot of [young] people in that gray zone where you want to intervene now so that when they’re 40, they don’t start coming down with heart disease and other problems,” said Carrasquillo, who was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in New York. He was not involved in the research.

The “most striking” result, he said, was the low scores for physical activity.

“It’s a wake-up call for everyone to be more active,” Carrasquillo said.

Many young people in Puerto Rico face systemic barriers to achieving the best health, including food insecurity, poverty, a shortage of healthcare professionals, and an ongoing financial crisis on the island, the study’s authors noted. Puerto Rico’s debt repayment obligations appropriate money that could be better spent on health care, Carrasquillo said.

Large-scale solar & battery storage projects on track for Guayama, Salinas

The federal government has just finalized a $861 million loan guarantee to fund what will be Puerto Rico’s largest utility-scale solar and battery storage installations, according to specialized publication Canary Media.

In July, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Loan Programs Office announced financing for two solar-plus-storage facilities on the southern coast of the island, plus two standalone battery energy storage systems. The solar plants combined will have 200 megawatts of solar capacity — enough to power 43,000 homes — while the battery systems are expected to provide up to 285 megawatts of storage capacity, Canary Media said.

The installations, collectively called Project Marahu,

will be led by Clean Flexible Energy LLC (CFE), an “indirect subsidiary” of the U.S. energy companies AES Corp. and TotalEnergies Holdings USA. The facilities will be located in the municipalities of Guayama and Salinas, Canary Media said.

The DOE offers loans for clean energy projects on the condition that borrowers meet certain financing and administrative requirements. According to the agency, CFE has now met all those conditions, meaning that hundreds of millions of dollars will soon start flowing toward construction.

Project Marahu is expected to go online sometime in 2025.

Jigar Shah, director of the DOE’s Loan Programs Office, told Canary Media that the loan presents a major opportunity to diversify and stabilize Puerto Rico’s grid, which currently relies on fossil fuels to produce more than 90% of its electricity.

The two solar-plus-storage installations, enough to power 43,000 homes, plus two standalone battery energy storage systems, will be sited in Guayama and Salinas, according to a published report.

“There’s a huge potential for additional projects like this,” he said.

Legislative Assembly creates collection center for Milton survivors

The island Senate and House of Representatives, along with the Capitol Superintendency and the Office of Legislative Services, announced on Wednesday the

creation of a collection center to collect items destined for families affected by Hurricane Milton in the state of Florida.

The center will be set up today and Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Plaza San Juan Bautista, in front of Plaza de la Democracia on the grounds of the Capitol in Puerta de Tierra.

Donations of non-perishable food, first aid supplies, personal hygiene items and bottled water will be accepted. The leaders of the legislative bodies called on everyone in Puerto Rico to join the timely humanitarian cause and help needy families in Florida.

Airline adds new direct flight to Santo Domingo

SKYhigh Dominicana airline is now offering a daily flight between Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in Carolina and Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Carlos Mercado Santiago announced earlier this week.

It is the airline’s second direct route, following the launch of the Santo Domingo-Aguadilla route a year ago.

“This new flight strengthens Puerto Rico’s profile as an air access hub in the Caribbean, increases the network of flights between Caribbean destinations, and makes both destinations

even more attractive and accessible, enhancing the planning of vacation trips with visits to various destinations in the region,” Mercado Santiago said in a written statement. “The routes between the international airports of Santo Domingo, San Juan, and Aguadilla are the product of our shared vision of encouraging the development of new travel options and offers for those interested in enjoying the benefits and excellent service for which we are known internationally.”

Puerto Rico’s tourism chief noted that SKYhigh flights between San Juan and Santo Domingo will have an estimated direct impact of $5.9 million. The San Juan and Aguadilla flights will add around 40,439 seats to the current inventory.

Cesarina Beauchamp, executive vice president of SKYhigh Dominicana, pointed out that the SJU-SDQ flight “is not only a new service, but a door that opens to new growth opportunities for tourism and trade between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.”

“With daily flights, we provide unique connectivity in the Caribbean that will benefit

both business and leisure travelers,” she said. Aerostar President and CEO Jorge Hernández added: “In terms of international flights, the Dominican Republic is the preferred destination for our passengers.”

The new air route between San Juan and Santo Domingo will have an estimated direct impact of $5.9 million, and combined with the SKYhigh Dominicana flights already operating out of Aguadilla will add around 40,439 seats to the current inventory.

Lawmaker denounces cuts to UPR insisted on by fiscal board

Rep. Lourdes Ramos Rivera directly accused the Financial Oversight and Management Board on Wednesday of violating the human rights of students in Puerto Rico by continuing to insist on further cutting the resources allocated for the operation of the island’s public university system.

Ramos, who has authored numerous legislative measures and laws in favor of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), its professors and employees, and its retirement system, once again criticized the oversight board for putting at risk the accreditations of the different disciplines offered at the island’s main center of higher education.

She urged the UPR governing board and its chairman, Ricardo Dalmau, to stand up for the rights of university students and not be intimidated by the federal entity.

“One thing is to seek reasonable consensus and understanding and another is to be silent and hostage to the abuses of the board,” Ramos said. “With so much inertia, the UPR is losing its life!”

The New Progressive Party at-large legislator noted that Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations in 1948 states that “we all have the right to education.”

She used excerpts from the UN declaration to reaffirm that “education is a human right, a public good and a col-

lective responsibility.”

“The UN established that education ‘is the only investment that countries can make to build equitable, healthy and prosperous societies,’” she said.

The worst outrage, Ramos said, is that the oversight board has never yielded in its strategy to financially dismantle the UPR, taking more and more from the institution’s operational budget. That even includes budget resources that were assigned by law by the Legislative Assembly for specific use

by the university.

“After subtracting $49 million from its budget,” she said, “the board is now also putting at risk the accreditations of the university programs and offerings that train the new generation of professionals who have to drive the economic growth of the Island, after the end of the bankruptcy. This abuse has to stop!”

It is equally embarrassing for Ramos that all this is happening when just a week ago, the prestigious educational firm QS World University Rankings ranked UPR at No. 1 as the best university in the Caribbean.

“It is like a concerted plan by the board to sabotage the prestige of our UPR, the talent of the faculty and the research efforts that have given it so much renown,” she asserted.

Ramos insisted therefore that Dalmau and the governing board cannot assume such a passive and complacent position.

She also denounced that the members of the oversight board can send their children to the best universities while restricting the right of humble and middle class families in Puerto Rico to receive an excellent education.

“Not only are they the confirmation of the crudest colonialism that the ELA [commonwealth status by its initials in Spanish] imposes on us, but they also think of themselves as masters, lords and landowners, as if our students were children of slaves lacking any rights,” Ramos said. “They should be ashamed!”

Nydia Velázquez Serrano (D-N.Y.) and Alex andria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) expressed their support for the exit of the Financial Oversight and Control Board and LUMA Energy from the island during a press conference in San Juan on Wednesday.

“Yes, we are supporting [their exit],” Velázquez Serrano said when asked by the press. “I think it is time for the board to pack its bags and leave.”

Ocasio-Cortez said the oversight board “is a tool that limits our sovereignty and resources on the island.”

“We must protect our vital resources and stop the structures that benefit corporations over the suffering of our people,” she said. “The board should not continue and we must remove them.”

Velázquez Serrano added that “We must be serious when we say that we are going to remove LUMA.”

analysis to speak to the people with the truth about whether it is possible or not,” she said.

The congresswomen from New York endorsed the main candidates of the “Alianza de País” (Alliance) between the Citizen Victory Movement and the Puerto Rican Independence Party for the general elections on Nov. 5.

“Today, with my face to the sun, I give

my endorsement to Juan Dalmau for governor, Ana Irma Rivera Lassén for resident commissioner and Manuel Natal for mayor of San Juan,” Velázquez Serrano said emphatically.

The press conference, initially scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed due to the health condition of Griselle Morales Rodríguez, Juan Dalmau’s wife, who remained hospi-

talized Wednesday after suffering an acute cerebral hemorrhage.

Later on Wednesday, Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón, the New Progressive Party candidate for governor, said in reaction to the statements made at the press conference that Velázquez “voted for” the oversight board.

“In other words, she was in favor of this PROMESA legislation that is the one that now imposes these requirements on us,” González Colón said in response to questions from journalist Luis Enrique Falú on “Día a Día” (Telemundo).

Regarding Velázquez’s statements supporting the departure of LUMA Energy, González Colón said “I find it very sad that she talks about that when she voted against the funds for Puerto Rico in the bipartisan bill that gave it Medicaid funds, infrastructure funds.”

“So it is very easy to politic when you have electricity in New York and Puerto Ricans do not have electricity here,” she said.

Regarding the endorsement by both congresswomen of the Alliance candidates, González Colón said: “It is natural, they are two independentistas endorsing independentistas.”

Trump escalates threats to political opponents he deems the ‘enemy’

With three weeks left before Election Day, former President Donald Trump is pushing to the forefront of his campaign a menacing political threat: that he would use the power of the presidency to crush those who disagree with him.

In a Fox News interview Sunday, Trump framed Democrats as a pernicious “enemy from within” that would cause chaos on Election Day that he speculated the National Guard might need to handle.

A day later, he closed his remarks to a crowd at what was billed as a town hall in Pennsylvania with a stark message about his

the military to go after them.”

Harris’ full-throated attacks on Trump are a notable break from her previous efforts to minimize him as a vestige of the past. Her aides believe voters are still not familiar with Trump’s statements, nor do they fully understand the stakes for American democracy.

The campaign plans to integrate the video of Trump’s remarks — which it quickly turned into a television ad — into future rallies. Harris told aides after Monday night’s event that using the video footage to make her case against Trump reminded her of presenting evidence at trial.

Some who have publicly opposed Trump’s return to power are preparing for him to keep his promises. Gen. Mark Milley, who served as chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during Trump’s administration, told journalist Bob Woodward that he feared being recalled to uniform to be court-martialed “for disloyalty” should Trump win reelection. After criticizing Trump in a pointed retirement speech, Milley told Woodward that he installed bulletproof glass and blastproof curtains at his home.

And on Tuesday, he once again refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power when pressed by an interviewer at an economic forum in Chicago.

With early voting underway in key battlegrounds, the race for the White House is moving toward Election Day in an extraordinary and sobering fashion. Trump has long flirted with, if not openly endorsed, anti-democratic tendencies with his continued refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election, embrace of conspiracy theories of large-scale voter fraud and accusations that the justice system is being weaponized against him. He has praised leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for being authoritarian strongmen.

But never before has a presidential nominee — let alone a former president — openly suggested turning the military on U.S. citizens simply because they oppose his candidacy. As he escalates his threats of political retribution, Trump is offering voters the choice of a very different, and far less democratic, form of American government.

“There is not a case in American history where a presidential candidate has run for office on a promise that they would exact retribution

against anyone they perceive as not supporting them in the campaign,” said Ian Bassin, a former associate White House counsel under Barack Obama who leads the advocacy group Protect Democracy. “It’s so fundamentally, outrageously beyond the pale of how this country has worked that it’s hard to articulate how insane it is.”

As they move into what will be their closing arguments to voters, Trump and Harris are devoting most of their attention to wrangling over the issues that remain voters’ top priorities — the economy, abortion rights, housing costs, and American engagement in the wars roiling Ukraine and the Middle East. The race remains tight, with views about Trump deeply cemented for most voters.

But the Harris campaign sees fresh political opportunities in Trump’s latest attacks on democratic principles, particularly among moderate Republicans and independents who disapprove of the former president’s character and polarizing style.

As Trump spoke Monday night, Harris stood in a stadium at the opposite end of Pennsylvania where she took the unusual step of playing an extended video montage of Trump vowing to go after those who oppose him. It included his recent comments about the possibility of military action against the “enemy within.”

“He’s talking about, he considers anyone who doesn’t support him or will not bend to his will an enemy of our country,” she told several thousand supporters at a rally in Erie, Pennsylvania. “He is saying that he would use

Olivia Troye, who was Vice President Mike Pence’s homeland security adviser before becoming a prominent surrogate for the Harris campaign, said in an interview that her fears about a second Trump administration included prosecutions and a possible threat to her family’s physical security.

She worries that her husband could lose his job, and that Trump could pardon Jan. 6 rioters and they could target her. She even paused plans to adopt a child because she fears the environment for her family has become too dangerous.

“I have certainly considered what my options are in terms of citizenship in other places,” she said. “We are preparing for the worst-case scenario.”

Such threats of vengeance from Trump are hardly new: He has been talking about punishing his political adversaries since his 2016 run, when he repeatedly insisted that his opponent, Hillary Clinton, should go to jail and he encouraged crowds to chant “lock her up” at his rallies. Since his defeat in 2020, he has refused to accept that result, continuing to peddle false claims about election fraud.

And he has woven vows of retribution throughout his third campaign, promising to avenge what he sees as his wronged supporters.

“In 2016, I declared, ‘I am your voice,’” Trump told a crowd of conservative activists in March 2023. “Today, I add: I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution.”

Harris agrees Trump is a fascist: 5 Charlamagne interview takeaways

Vice President Kamala Harris agreed earlier this week with radio host Charlamagne Tha God that former President Donald Trump was a fascist, going a step further than she had before in casting her Republican rival as a dangerous authoritarian leader.

During a free-flowing interview that often spoke to the concerns of Black Americans, Harris was contrasting her vision for the nation with Trump’s when Charlamagne jumped in to say: “The other is about fascism. Why can’t we just say it?”

“Yes, we can say that,” Harris replied. Her comments came days after it was revealed that Mark A. Milley, chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Trump, had called the former president “a fascist to the core,” according to a new book from journalist Bob Woodward. Harris’ hourlong appearance on Tuesday in Detroit with Charlamagne — a co-host of the popular hip-hop morning radio show “The Breakfast Club,” which has many Black listeners — was part of a major push to counteract weakening support from Black voters. And during the conversation, she predicted that the election would come down to the wire.

“This is a margin-of-error race,” she said. “I’m going to win, but it’s tight.”

Here are five takeaways from the interview.

Harris sharpened her attack on Trump as ‘weak’ yet dangerous.

For much of her vice presidency, some of Harris’ aides have thought she is too cautious in her public remarks. But when it came to Trump on Tuesday, she did not hold back.

She agreed with Charlamagne that Trump has embraced fascism and said his plans would make “it more difficult for working people to get by and to destroy our democracy.” Republicans have accused Democrats of fomenting political violence, including the assassination attempts on Trump, by labeling him a threat to democracy. Trump, for his part, has repeatedly described Harris as a fascist.

On Tuesday, the vice president’s comment was just one in a series of blunt attacks on his character and what he represents.

She also attacked him for admiring dictators, citing a report that he sent Russian President Vladimir Putin valuable COVID-19testing equipment “when Black people were dying every day” from the pandemic.

“The man is really quite weak,” Harris said. “He’s weak. It’s a sign of weakness that you want to please dictators and seek their flattery and favor.”

She sounded nothing like Obama.

Harris adopted a far different strategy to appeal to Black voters, specifically Black men, than former President Barack Obama used when he campaigned for her last week in Pittsburgh.

Responding to the wavering enthusiasm among some Black men that has caused panic in the Democratic Party, Obama scolded them and accused them of not “feeling the idea of

having a woman as president.”

On Tuesday, Charlamagne said Obama had been “finger-waving at Black men” and questioned when anti-Harris white voters would be admonished.

“What is happening is that we are all working on reminding people of what is at stake,” Harris replied.

Contrasting her policies with those of Trump, she rattled off a list of proposals.

She said that her child tax credit measure and investments in lowering prescription drug prices would help the Black community. She described a plan to provide 1 million loans that would forgive up to $20,000 for Black entrepreneurs. She said her economic agenda would increase “homeownership in the Black community.”

And Harris said her goal to legalize marijuana would help Black men in particular. “I know exactly how those laws have been used to disproportionally impact certain populations and specifically Black men,” she said, after brushing off a question about the false claim that she went out of her way to incarcerate Black men for marijuana offenses.

Too scripted? She says she is simply ‘disciplined.’

Charlamagne opened the interview by noting that Harris has been criticized for seeming “very scripted” and for sticking to her “talking points” in other media appearances.

“That would be called disciplined,” she shot back.

Charlamagne pressed her on the border.

One of the tensest points of the interview came when Charlamagne pushed Harris on one of her greatest political vulnerabilities: the U.S.-Mexico border.

She went on the defensive.

When the radio host asked whether President Joe Biden’s administration should be blamed for the soaring number of illegal crossings recorded during most of his presidency, Harris repeated her standard argument that the White House had supported a bipartisan border security bill that would have sharply curtailed asylum. Republicans killed the bill after taking a cue from Trump, who did not want Democrats to secure an election-year victory.

But the exchange also included a rare comment from Harris about Trump’s attempts to label her the “border czar.” Biden did not assign her the job of managing policies at the border, but rather addressing poverty and corruption in Central America so that would-be migrants would stay home.

“If I responded to every name he called me, I wouldn’t be focused on the things that actually helped the American people,” Harris said of Trump.

In a rarity, she spoke about her faith and her Blackness.

On Tuesday the vice president was asked by a Detroit pastor about criticism, which he said came from the Trump campaign, that she was not engaged with the Black church.

“I grew up in the Black church. I grew up attending 23rd Avenue Church of God in Oakland, California,” Harris said. “My pastor is Amos C. Brown of Third Baptist Church in San Francisco, California.”

And she tried to turn the tables on Trump, who is not known for his faith and has a long history of making racist remarks, by suggesting he was a charlatan.

“He’s selling $60 Bibles or tennis shoes and trying to play people as though that makes him more understanding of the Black community,” she said. “Come on.”

Small Business Administration depletes disaster loan funds

he Small Business Administration has run out of funds to provide low-interest loans to homeowners and businesses to repair property damaged by disasters, the Biden ad-

The drawdown of funds comes as residents across the southeast are still recovering from the destructive impacts of hurricanes Milton and Helene. Federal officials urged eligible people to continue to apply for loans, which they would continue to process while they wait for lawmakers to pass “much-needed funding.” But Congress is not set to reconvene until Nov. 12, and congressional leaders have not committed to calling members back sooner to approve more funding for the SBA or the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“Speaker Johnson has promised that this and other disaster programs will be replenished when Congress returns, so Americans should continue to apply for these loans,” President Joe Biden said in a statement, referring to Speaker Mike Johnson. “SBA will continue to process applications and will disburse loans as soon as Congress provides the needed funding.”

Isabel Guzman, the agency’s administrator, warned last week that the SBA would soon run out of funds, and she called on lawmakers to return to Washington to approve more money. Biden also urged Congress to “restore this funding” earlier this month.

Johnson said that federal officials had enough disaster funding to address the immediate needs of Americans in hurricane-affected areas. He has pointed to the additional $20 billion that Congress recently approved for FEMA’s disaster relief fund.

FEMA officials have said they have enough money for the immediate recovery needs of people affected by Hurricane Milton. But they have said that they will have to evaluate how quickly they are burning through funding. Alejandro N. Mayorkas, the homeland security secretary, has also warned that FEMA might not have enough funding to make it through the rest of the hurricane season.

“There’s no question these devastating back-to-back storms have stressed the SBA funding program,” Johnson said in a statement. “Congress is tracking this situation closely, and when members return in just a few short weeks, the administration should have an accurate

assessment of the actual dollar amount needed and there will be strong bipartisan support to provide the necessary funding.”

A spokesperson for Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, the majority leader, said last week that he was also waiting for estimates from agencies on the ground.

Some lawmakers have urged Congress to return to Washington sooner. Last week, more than 60 House Democrats signed a letter urging Johnson to bring the House back into session to approve more disaster relief funding for the SBA and FEMA.

The SBA provides low-interest loans to homeowners, renters, businesses and nonprofits whose property has been damaged because of disasters. Homeowners can get loans of up to $500,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are also eligible for up to $100,000 to repair or replace personal property. Businesses can get loans of up to $2 million.

So far, the SBA has made more than 700 loan offers totaling about $48 million and received about 37,000 applications from people affected by Hurricane Helene. The agency has received more than 12,000 applications from those affected by Hurricane Milton.

The agency could continue to make a small number of new loan offers if money is made available through loan cancellations, agency officials said.

The SBA has requested $1.6 billion in new funding from Congress for its disaster loan program for the full fiscal year, though agency leaders have said they would probably need more after Hurricane Milton. In 2023, the SBA lent nearly $3 billion — including more than $670 million for businesses and more than $2.3 billion for homeowners and renters — to help people recover from disasters.

Dow ends at another record high as Wall Street buoyed by banks, small-caps

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose on Wednesday and closed at a record high, and Wall Street’s two other benchmark indexes also ended higher, weathering declines in megacap tech shares thanks to small-caps gains and financial shares buoyed by strong earnings.

It was the third time in four sessions the Dow has recorded a best ever finish, ending above 43,000 points again and recouping losses from the previous session.

Also a whisker away from setting another closing milestone was the S&P 500, but ultimately it finished just short, up 27.21 points, or 0.47%, to 5,842.47 points.

The Nasdaq Composite rose 51.49 points, or 0.28%, to 18,367.08. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 337.28 points, or 0.79%, to 43,077.70.

On a broadly positive day for Wall Street, it was financial stocks which led the way.

“I think investors have rotated a little bit out of some of the big tech companies and into the big financial companies,” said Michael Kantrowitz, chief investment strategist at Piper Sandler.

He said some movement from investors made sense as the rate environment has become more conducive for bank earnings, while a lot of optimism around artificial intelligence (AI) is priced into tech companies.

Morgan Stanley posted a record close, jumping 6.5%, after it joined peers such as JPMorgan Chase in reporting strong profits following a sharp increase in investment banking revenue.

Larger regional banks, traditionally less reliant on investment banking activities, were also higher. First Horizon rose 4.1% and U.S. Bancorp advanced 4.7% after reporting third-quarter results.

The broader Banks index was up 1.2%, and an index tracking regional banks gained 1.5%.

Investors also focused on small-cap stocks, with some rotation from expensive tech megacaps to less expensive sectors.

The Russell 2000 index rose 1.6%, and the S&P Small Cap 600 gained 1.4%. Both had their highest finishes since November 2021.

While acknowledging some buying in recent days, Piper Sandler’s Kantrowitz said he was yet to be convinced of a wider rotation into small caps.

“I think people are broadening out their portfolio exposure, but still sticking with the same flavor of fundamentals,” adding people were buying high-quality smallcaps but not digging into the kinds of deep-value names you would expect to attract attention if the full rotation was underway.

Among the big-tech names which dragged, Apple dipped 0.9% after hitting a record high in the previous session. Alphabet, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft all declined between 0.2% and 1.6%.

MOST ASSERTIVE STOCKS

Chip heavyweight Nvidia, however, bucked the megacap slide, rising 3.1% after slumping nearly 5% in the previous session.

Gains in the so-called Magnificent Seven group of tech stocks have driven most of Wall Street’s record-breaking run this year. However, with valuations increasingly stretched and a brighter economic outlook, investors have been seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Four of the 11 S&P sectors registered record closing highs: financials, utilities, materials and industrials.

Utilities led sectoral gains, leaping 2%, with Dominion Energy’s 5.1% increase among the catalysts after it was one of the power companies with which Amazon. com announced agreements for developing nuclear technology to power data centers.

The second best-performing S&P sectors year to date, Piper Sandler’s Kantrowitz said he remains bullish on util-

Italy criminalizes surrogacy from abroad, a blow to gay and infertile couples

Italy passed a law Wednesday that criminalizes seeking surrogacy abroad, a move the country’s conservative government said would protect women’s dignity, while critics see it as yet another crackdown by the government on LGBTQ+ families, as the law will make it virtually impossible for gay fathers to have children.

Surrogacy is already illegal in Italy. But the government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has vowed to broaden the ban to punish Italians who seek it in countries where it is legal, like in parts of the United States.

Analysts saw the legislation as a way for Meloni to assert her conservative credentials and appeal to her political base, which disproportionately opposes surrogacy and adoption by gay couples. Italy, home to the Vatican, already ranks low in Europe when it comes to civil liberties, and Italian critics say that by imposing further restrictions on gay families, Meloni has taken a particularly hard line.

Even before it passed, the law had plunged gay families into panic. Now, they feel even more in danger, since under the new law they could be subject to prison sentences and large fines if they seek a surrogate birth abroad.

“It’s like a truck hitting us in the face,” said Pierre Molena, who, with his partner, has embarked on the long path of pursuing a family through surrogacy abroad.

“We are worried about our future and that of our children,” he said.

While some senators on Wednesday rejected assertions that the law was homophobic or specifically targeted the gay com-

(Gianni Cipriano for The New York Times)

munity, Carolina Varchi, who introduced the anti-surrogacy bill, wrote on Facebook this summer that with the legislation, her party was working against LGBTQ+ “ideology.”

“Hurrah for children and their right, which is a priority, to have a father and a mother,” said Domenica Spinelli, a senator with Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, just before Italy’s Senate approved the bill, with a vote of 84-58.

Meloni has also expressed similar positions. Meloni, who has her political roots in a post-fascist party, has surprised many since taking office by aligning with the Western mainstream on key issues, such as the economy and support for Ukraine.

aly had already been trailing most European countries in terms of LGBTQ+ rights before Meloni’s government took power. Together with Hungary and the Czech Republic, Italy was among the few European Union countries not to recognize same-sex marriage.

Since coming to power, her government has appealed a court decision that allowed adults to be identified as a “parent” on their child’s ID, rather than as a “mother” or “father.” It also called on local authorities to vigorously enforce a court decision that barred a mayor from registering children born through surrogacy abroad as having two fathers.

But the law passed Wednesday in Italy is so far-reaching that it was unclear if it could withstand legal challenges.

In theory, anyone can report a family they suspect of having had a child through surrogacy, paving the way for possible criminal prosecution. However, experts say any resulting trial could trigger constitutional challenges. In addition, Italy would face the prospect of trying to prosecute people for crimes committed in a country where their actions were legal, potentially creating diplomatic tensions.

The law also targets a relatively small number of families in a country already struggling with a low birthrate. Most Italian couples who use surrogacy are believed to be heterosexual, and they can also be adversely affected by the law, experts on the issue say. But because gay couples need a third party to have children, many feel the law leaves them especially vulnerable to scrutiny. Also, only heterosexual couples are allowed to adopt in Italy, meaning gay Italians have few options for starting a family.

Molena criticized the legislation for not differentiating between poorer women who can be exploited by the practice and women in places like Canada, who volunteer to carry a baby without seeking compensation.

Conservative lawmakers argued in the Senate on Wednesday that surrogacy exploits all women. They also argued that the new law would put an end to the hypocrisy of the current legal situation in Italy, where couples can easily circumvent the surrogacy ban by pursuing it abroad.

But experts say she has taken subtle steps on cultural issues, such as abortion and gay rights, to appeal to her conservative base. For critics, that was particularly alarming, as It-

Cities that used to issue such certificates, such as Milan, stopped doing so, but the directive also has had the ripple effect of encouraging several Italian prosecutors to revise the birth certificates of children born to lesbian couples. Dozens of mothers faced the prospect of seeing their names removed from the birth certificates of their children.

When it comes to surrogacy, the Catholic Church, along with many feminists, have opposed it, and it is outlawed in other European countries. In some, such as the United Kingdom and Greece, it is legal under certain conditions.

Sen. Elena Murelli, a member of the antiimmigrant League party, called surrogacy a form of “child trade,” and added “you can’t buy children at the supermarket.”

Liberal lawmakers argued that surrogacy should be considered a medical solution to infertility, and that in a country where gay couples are unable to adopt, the law would likely prevent those couples from having children.

The law also stigmatizes the many children born through surrogacy who already live in Italy, opponents said. “It looks like you don’t realize these people already exist,” said Alessandra Maiorino, a member of Italy’s anti-establishment Five Star Movement.

How America can stop a Mideast missile war that everyone will lose

Let’s review the latest headlines: The United States is sending an advanced antimissile system to Israel, along with U.S. troops to operate it. Iran’s foreign minister says there will be “no red lines” governing Iran’s retaliation for any Israeli retaliation for Iran’s latest missile retaliation. And reports from the Persian Gulf say Iran has quietly told Arab gulf states that if Iran is hit by Israel, Iran may respond by striking Arab oil fields.

If all of this does not terrify you, you are not paying attention. May I make a suggestion?

How about sending our savvy CIA director, Bill Burns, to meet his Iranian counterpart on neutral turf in Muscat, Oman, with a real strategy for coercive diplomacy vis-à-vis Iran that might actually work to change the Iran regime’s behavior? Burns could say to the Iranian intelligence chief something like the following:

“Let me tell you how your country looks from CIA headquarters: You are infiltrated, exposed and isolated.

“Infiltrated? We heard that the latest joke going around Tehran is that your supreme leader is in hiding, and the only ones who know where he is are the Israelis. Israel’s intelligence is very good, but the only reason it could have penetrated your leadership and Hezbollah’s so deeply is that so many Iranian and Lebanese Shiites hate both regimes and are ready to spy for Israel. So you have no idea today when you talk to one another or to Hezbollah whether the person you’re talking to

is working for Israel or you.

“Exposed? You, Iran, have fired nearly 500 rockets at Israel since April and did not destroy a single military target or kill a single Israeli soldier. I don’t have to tell you that on April 19, an Israeli airstrike on Iran damaged an S-300 air defense system at the 8th Shekari Air Base in Isfahan. It was reported that Israel had deployed aerial drones and fired at least one missile from a warplane with stealth technology — and you never saw them coming. You are N-A-K-E-D.

“And finally, you are isolated. Israel has badly damaged your Hezbollah militia, in which you have invested billions of dollars, so it is no longer your protection against an Israeli strike on your nuclear facilities. We have inflicted heavy damage on your Houthi militia in Yemen. Syria’s President Bashar Assad is fed up with you and wants you out of his country, and the Arab gulf states are now doing all they can to woo Assad away from Iran. The mainstream Iraqi Shiite party led by Muqtada al-Sadr hates you for the way your regime and militias have stolen so much oil revenue from Iraq and dragged your Iraqi proxies into your fight with Israel. Polls show how unpopular your regime is across the Arab world. Even Vladimir Putin does not want to see you get a nuclear bomb. A nuclear-armed Iran to his south? He’s not that crazy.

“So this is a moment of truth for Iran. You have two paths: Either change your behavior or risk collapsing under the weight of your own recklessness. But when I say change your behavior, this time I mean something different from when we negotiated the nuclear agreement with you during the Obama administration.

“We made a mistake back then. We were obsessed with curbing the weapon you were never likely to use — a nuclear bomb, if you could even make one — while ignoring the weapon you were using every day to undermine our interests, the interests of our Arab allies, indeed the interests of most citizens in the region craving stability, not to mention Israel. And that was your implantation of militias armed with increasingly more precise and longer-and-longer-range rockets in Lebanon, Gaza, Syria, Yemen and Iraq. Your proxies crippled those states from the inside and threatened Israel and our Arab allies on the outside.

“We are not playing that game anymore. If you continue using your regional militias to attack Israel and you get into a no-holds-barred missile shootout with Tel Aviv, we are going to protect the Israelis, and you are going to get absolutely hammered. And if you carry out your threat to attack Saudi or UAE oil fields to deter us, or close the Strait of Hormuz, your oil industry will be crushed. And your people will not forgive you. No wonder our intel tells us that you are panicked about an Israeli strike.

“So here is what we propose: an end to Iranian imperialism in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Gaza in return for our commitment not to bring down your regime, but instead engage with you on building a regionwide collective security arrangement. You pull back, we pull back, and Israel pulls back. But this nonsense of you nurturing failed states in Lebanon, Yemen, Syria and Iraq so that their people can all fight and die while you cheer safely from Tehran — that stops now.

“We are not out to humiliate you. You can call it a win for your regime that the Great Satan has recognized Iran as a necessary part of any regional collective security system. But the arming of Hezbollah, the Houthis and the Shiite militias in Iraq is over. You stop that, and we will get the Israelis to withdraw from southern Lebanon and Gaza. The Lebanese army and a credible, lethal, international force will replace Hezbollah, and an Arab peacekeeping force will replace Hamas. We will also encourage Israel to limit any retaliatory strike against you.

“Otherwise, you are on your own.”

My point is that if we want a peaceful and better Middle East, we need to sharpen the choices for Iran’s clerical leadership: restart nuclear talks, end the supplying of thousands of rockets to its proxies and be able to stay in power — or we will give Israel every weapon in our conventional arsenal, including the 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs designed to destroy their deeply buried nuclear facilities and the B-2 bombers to deliver them.

We need to confront Iran with an overwhelming, credible threat of force, coupled with a diplomatic survival pathway out — but one that this time addresses both Iran’s nuclear threat and regional behavior. Our job is to change Iran’s behavior; regime change is the job of the Iranian people. I believe the best way for that regime to lose its grip is to deprive it of the oxygen of permanent conflict with Israel and America — and all the excuses that Iran’s clerical tyrants give for why their people are so isolated and impoverished.

But I don’t stop there. We also need to sharpen the choices for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel. We must not be in the business of making Israel safe so that a radical messianic government can annex the West Bank. If we are going to keep resupplying Israel with missiles and even dispatch U.S.-run missile systems, Bibi needs to purge the settler lunatics from his Cabinet, forge a national unity coalition and agree to open talks with a reformed Palestinian Authority — with a new technocratic Cabinet led by credible leaders like former Prime Minister Salam Fayyad — on a two-state solution.

That would pave the way for the UAE and other moderate Arab states to deploy troops to the Gaza Strip and for Saudi Arabia to normalize relations with Israel and forge a security agreement with Washington.

Let me put this as clearly as I can: This crisis in the Middle East will not end until Israel clearly defines its eastern border and declares that everything beyond it is reserved for a Palestinian state in the West Bank, once Palestinians meet the legitimate security requirements Israel needs to accept a twostate solution. Israel needs to be out of the Jewish settlements business — now. Israel’s creeping West Bank annexation is destroying its legitimacy as a democracy, when its self-defense requires all the friends it can get in the region and beyond.

Even more important, though, this crisis in the Middle East will not end until Iran, in effect, defines its western border and declares that everything beyond that is for the Lebanese, Syrians, Yemenis, Iraqis, Israelis and Palestinians to decide — so long as they respect Iran’s legitimate security needs. Iran needs to be out of the Islamic imperialism business.

Fitting in was never Randy Newman’s jam

Randy Newman was a nepo baby, a sprig of musical royalty. Three of his uncles were Hollywood film composers. One received 45 Oscar nominations and won nine times.

Newman’s father wanted to be a composer. His parents, sensing the family needed to diversify its portfolio, dissuaded him. He became a physician with a celebrity-studded clientele. Those celebrities included Pat Boone, the bland pop singer, who tried to get young Randy signed to the publishing arm of his label. Randy didn’t need Boone — or anyone else. He was writing songs professionally while still in his teens and by his early 20s was recognized as an uncommon sort of genius. His first four records, released between 1968 and 1974, floored those who knew the real thing when they heard it. His songs were literate, mocking and dense with the ghosts of American history. His greatness did not go unsung. Rolling Stone named Newman Rock Star of the Year for 1971, the same year Marvin Gaye released “What’s Going On,” Joni Mitchell released “Blue” and the Rolling Stones released “Sticky Fingers.”

Randy Newman at his home in Los Angeles, July 27, 2017, around the time of the release of “Dark Matter,” his first album of new material in nine years. A biography of the singer behind “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” and “Short People” considers a complicated man with a satirical edge. (Julian Berman/The New York Times)

He broke through to the rest of America six years later, when his song “Short People” began blasting from car radios. Here was an anchovy amid pop radio’s peaches. Many can remember where they were when they first heard it. No one could recall a hit like it. It was a novelty song with a poison tip.

“Short People” was hilarious (“you got to pick ’em up just to say hello”) and, oh, it was cruel (“short people got no reason to live”). It divided people; some highly cheesed-off little people began to picket his concerts.

Newman wrote songs with unreliable narrators, so many listeners gave him the benefit of the doubt about “Short People.” When interviewers asked, “The song’s all about prejudice, isn’t it?” he would reply, “Yeah.” He later commented: “But it wasn’t at the beginning. I just thought it was funny and it was. I wrote it because we needed an up song.”

Newman made more critically admired albums, but he wouldn’t have another major hit until he entered the family business: film music. He wrote and sang “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” the theme song for the Pixar movie “Toy Story,” one of the highest grossing films of 1995. He went on to write songs and scores for many other movies.

The Pixar work brought him new fans but baffled old ones. It was like learning that Ambrose Bierce or Lenny Bruce had written a picture book about a bunny. For Newman — to co-opt a line from his mighty song “Louisiana 1927,” which has been a beloved standard in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005 — the money rolled all day, the money rolled all night.

Newman, 80, is a serious, complicated man who deserves a serious, complicated biography. Robert Hilburn’s

new book, “A Few Words in Defense of Our Country: The Biography of Randy Newman,” is not that book. It’s a toothless hagiography packed with obvious filler, notably extended quotations from song lyrics and panegyrics from admirers.

Hilburn, who was a longtime pop critic for the Los Angeles Times, has written wellreceived biographies of Johnny Cash and Paul Simon, but his talents are not in evidence here. This book demonstrates little feel for Newman’s music. I wanted it to contain memorable ideas and sentences, but it does not.

If this book has a theme, it’s Newman’s lack of comfort in his own body and in America writ large. He was born a bit cross-eyed and was bullied. His shyness blended, as it often will, with misanthropy. He liked to stay inside, reading books and watching television. He was in several car crashes when young, and had health problems throughout his life.

He felt like an outsider because of his Jewishness. One of his songs, “Dixie Flyer,” describes what it felt like to arrive in New Orleans with his mother early on, and trying to fit in. Asked about assimilation in an interview, he gave an answer that still resonates:

“That’s never been done. There have been thousands of Jewish songwriters, and they have never done it. To be Jewish in America is different. No one wants to be an American more than a Jew. Irving Berlin was more American than John Wayne. But there’s a lack of comfort here for Jews, somehow. Is this really our country? And I think sometimes, maybe not.”

Newman is not presented as an angel. He had a drug period. He left his wife of 16 years for a 21-year-old Cal State student in 1983. But any grit is relentlessly sanded down. Newman’s best songs carry you through six or seven emotions in a few stanzas, and they disturb the sediment at the bottom of the American experiment. “Sail Away” is related in the voice of a slave trader; “Rednecks” refuses to let the North off the hook for its racism; “Political Science” provides sardonic encouragement to “drop the big one now.”

There is a lot of knockabout humanity, and sympathy for the underdog, in his work. He’s been a consummate and contrary user of the English language. A better-reported and more critical biography will probably have to wait until Newman, and others central to his story, are no longer with us.

In the early 1970s, Newman wrote a subversive song for Frank Sinatra about celebrity. Sinatra didn’t get the joke, so Newman recorded it himself. Something about the song captured Newman’s own ambivalent and awkward embrace of fame:

Listen, all you fools out there

Go on and love me — I don’t care

Oh, it’s lonely at the top.

With Lindor, Dodgers see what might’ve been

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor celebrates his home run against the Florida Marlins during the home opener at Citi Field in Queens on Friday, April 7, 2023. Andrew Friedman, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, says Lindor “was definitely on our target list of guys” back in the 2019-2020 offseason. (Hilary Swift/The New York Times)

Andrew Friedman turned on a New York Mets game last month and thought about sliding doors. On the screen was Francisco Lindor, a five-tool shortstop who was jockeying for position in the National League MVP race with Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani. Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, watched Lindor and remembered why he once tried to acquire him.

“Just thinking about how different the world would look,” Friedman said a day before Lindor’s leadoff home run sparked the Mets in a 7-3 victory against the Dodgers in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series earlier this week.

In the winter after the 2019 season, Friedman was in search of a star who could help end the Dodgers’ championship drought. He eventually struck a deal with Boston for Mookie Betts. In an alternate reality, though, he could have made a trade with Cleveland for Lindor.

“We engaged quite a bit,” Friedman said. “Had some traction here and there. I wouldn’t say it was anything that was close. But he was definitely on our target list of guys.”

Nobody can quibble with the actual outcome. Betts, a perennial All-Star, led the Dodgers to a championship in 2020. The Mets acquired Lindor that winter and made him the face of the franchise. The package sent to the Cleveland Guardians included second baseman Andrés Giménez, who has won two Gold Gloves for the American League Central champions. All three clubs remain alive in this postseason.

Yet the thought experiment still intrigued Friedman. The acquisition of Betts represented the culmination of a yearslong quest. When the

Dodgers traded Adrián González, Brandon McCarthy and Scott Kazmir to the Atlanta Braves after the 2017 season, Friedman described the deal as “a little more subtle than most.” Friedman wanted to reset his team’s luxury tax figure and stop paying penalties. He also intended to open a spot on his payroll for a player worth $30 million in salary.

He did not have a specific player in mind. That same winter, the Dodgers haggled with the Miami Marlins but could not strike a deal for Giancarlo Stanton. A year later, Bryce Harper turned down a short-term Dodgers offer for long-term stability with the Philadelphia Phillies. There were perennial flirtations with Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado. The Dodgers were serious enough about Anthony Rendon that Justin Turner offered to move off third base heading into 2020.

In the months after the 2019 season, Friedman maintained dialogue with the Cleveland front office while doing the same with Red Sox executive Chaim Bloom. Cleveland was considered unlikely to sign Lindor to a long-term deal, while Betts had turned down an extension offer from Boston.

On the free-agent market, Friedman persuaded team owner Mark Walter to offer Gerrit Cole a contract worth $300 million that would have been the richest ever for a pitcher. The only catch was the Dodgers asked to defer some of the money. Cole opted for a nine-year, $324 million contract with the Yankees.

“In the free-agent market, the issue always is, when you’re offering money, it has to be real money, not deferral money,” said Scott Boras, Cole’s agent.

Losing out on Cole disappointed Dodgers officials but did not deter them. Friedman kept talking to Cleveland. Lindor was an imperfect fit

for the Dodgers. He played a position occupied by Corey Seager. There were a few options to make it work. The Dodgers could have moved Seager to third base and explored the trade market for Turner or Max Muncy. Or the team could have played Lindor at second base and tried to move Gavin Lux.

In a way, Lindor offered more value than Betts. He was under team control through 2021, whereas Betts could become a free agent after 2020. Lindor played a premium position and had power. He had averaged 34 home runs from 2017 to 2019.

Friedman prides himself on keeping his options open. In practice, that means he engages in a lot of conversations that lead nowhere. He tried to loop in a third team to facilitate a deal built around Lindor. The talks fizzled. Friedman remained wary of parting with his best prospects, according to people familiar with the situation. That stance would not prevent him from acquiring Betts.

Friedman did not give up on Boston. Bloom had been his chief lieutenant with the Tampa Bay Rays. Eventually, the two men hammered out the deal that brought Betts and pitcher David Price to Los Angeles in exchange for outfielder Alex Verdugo, catcher Connor Wong and infielder Jeter Downs. After the pandemic began that spring, Betts agreed to a 12-year, $365 million contract that included some deferred money. He played a major part in the club’s run to a championship inside the COVID bubble in Arlington, Texas.

Lindor played through the disjointed 2020 campaign with Cleveland. A year from free agency, the team dealt him to the Mets for a package that included Giménez and shortstop Amed Rosario. Lindor was the first major acquisition made by the new Mets owner, Steve Cohen. Eager to demonstrate his differences from the Wilpon family, the franchise’s previous owners, Cohen lavished upon Lindor a 10-year, $341 million contract.

Lindor has never made an All-Star team as a Met. He tends to start seasons slowly. But his production has been tremendous. Only Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Ohtani have been more valuable since 2021, according to FanGraphs’s version of wins above replacement.

“He excels at every aspect of the game,” said David Stearns, the Mets’ president of baseball operations.

Lindor demonstrated his value earlier this season when the Mets appeared on the verge of collapse. On May 29, the Dodgers completed a sweep at Citi Field to dump the Mets 11 games below .500. The scene was turning ugly. Reliever Jorge López got himself ejected in the series finale, tossed his glove into the stands and

earned a dismissal from the team that afternoon. In the aftermath, Lindor called a meeting. He emphasized that the players needed to dedicate more energy to preparation and hold each other accountable. He led by example. Lindor posted a .957 on-base plus slugging percentage the rest of the year. The Mets returned from the brink and roared past the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final wild-card spot. Lindor’s tworun homer sank the Atlanta Braves in the first game of the final-day doubleheader. His grand slam in the team’s division series helped eliminate Philadelphia.

“What allows him to do all of that is how disciplined he is in his entire life,” Stearns said. Lindor lived out that mantra in Game 2. The Mets had been stamped 9-0 the night before. Lindor changed the conversation in the first atbat of the day. He saw eight pitches. The last one landed in the Mets’ bullpen. His team never trailed. The other team — the one he might have joined all those years ago — felt firsthand why a championship contender could be built around him.
