NPP lawmaker urges energy regulator to start search for another private grid operator

ANew Progressive Party lawmaker asked the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau on Thursday to begin the search for a new private operator of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority’s (PREPA) grid.
Currently, LUMA Energy is the private operator of PREPA’s transmission and distribution system.
District 4 Rep. Víctor Parés Otero said he supports a proposal from Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón to look for another private operator.
The lawmaker also pointed out that Act 17 of 2019, better known as the “Puerto Rico Energy Public Policy Law” gives the Energy Bureau the responsibility of carrying out a study on the feasibility and convenience of establishing an electricity market on the island in free competition and establishes the date of June 30, 2025 to complete it and present a report on the results to the Legislative Assembly and the governor.
“This morning, our next governor [González Colón] made it clear that changes are coming in January regarding the rehabilitation and maintenance of the energy transmission and distribution network, opening the door to look for another private operator,” . We fully support this initiative, vital for the reconstruction and maintenance of Puerto Rico’s energy platform,” Parés Otero said in a written statement.
“We want to know the status of that report, which, due to the complexity of the system, should have already begun,” he added. “We also request that it be ready before June of next year.”
“The opening to a free and competitive market must be a priority,” Parés Otero continued. “Law 17-2019 establishes this mechanism and makes possible the path to obtain another private operator for the transmission and distribution network. We do not want to return to the past, nobody wants that; what we all want is for the system to improve, adapted to our reality and the times, and that is why it is time to have this report from the Bureau to look for real options.”
González Colón responds to governor’s remarks on energy service ‘headache’
Also on Thursday, amid the back-and-forth between LUMA Energy and Genera PR, the private operator of the island’s legacy power plants, over who should shoulder the blame for recent generation breakdowns, González Colón responded to statements by Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia about the promises to cancel the LUMA Energy contract, pointing out that for defending the contract, he lost the primary against her.
“The governor makes those statements and that is why he lost the primary,” she said at a press conference. “He had four years to work on the energy situation and it was never audited.”
González Colón reiterated that the audit of the LUMA contract must be a priority.
“That audit has to be strict from day one and give it the tools in law to be able to protect the people of Puerto Rico,” she added.
The candidate also said that, if she becomes governor, she will look for alternatives such as the diversification of energy generation and does not rule out the possibility of looking for a new private operator.
“We would have to start looking for a second operator because we cannot, if the situation leads us to cancel that contract, go back,” González Colón said.
A day earlier, in response to questions from the press, the governor said whoever becomes governor with the recipe to straighten out the situation of the electrical service in Puerto Rico overnight is lying and will look bad in front of the people.
“We are going to go through this electoral process and I want to see the one who prevails in January,” Pierluisi said Wednesday. “Then they are going to have the same boring situation and the same headache that I have had and that all the people of Puerto Rico have had, because this is not resolved overnight…”
“So my recommendation,” the governor added, “to those who are in the [governor’s] race is to be careful with what they promise because this is not easy in the least, it is very difficult and it will take years to improve our system and what they have to do, if at the time they will have to roll up their sleeves as I have rolled them up in these years, to see if they get results.”
Dominican president reveals plan to supply energy to Puerto Rico

Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader has revealed a plan to sell electricity to Puerto Rico supplied through an underwater cable, according to a Listin Diario report published this week.
During his participation in the Conference on Infrastructure Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean sponsored by the Caribbean Development Bank and the Financial Times on Wednesday, Abinader said his goal for 2027 is to create a large energy surplus in order to sell electricity to Puerto Rico that would be supplied through an underwater cable.
Abinader said the initiative seeks not only to strengthen the energy independence of the Dominican Republic, but also to position the neighboring nation as a key supplier for the U.S. island territory, which faces serious challenges in its electrical system.
The head of state added that the proposed project seeks to expand the Dominican Republic’s energy export capacity and help Puerto Rico stabilize its fragile electrical system, which has been severely set back by natural disasters, such as hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.
In March, the Caribbean Transmission Development Company proposed a bidirectional, high-voltage direct current subsea transmission line from Puerto Rico to the Dominican Republic.
The proposed $1 billion underwater cable would operate at 320 kilovolt direct current with a capacity to transport electricity of up to 700 megawatts in either direction without interrupting the grid’s operations.
At the time, the firm said the proposed “Hostos” project, named after Puerto Rican educator and lawyer Eugenio María de Hostos, was under evaluation by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office for a presidential permit, a process required of all projects between the United States and a foreign country.
Abinader also reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the transition to renewable energy. He said the goal is that by 2030, 30% of the energy produced in the neighboring country will come from clean sources.
The strategy, he said, responds to the growing internal energy demand and the vision of positioning the Dominican Republic as a leader in energy sustainability in the Caribbean region.

Replacement of FDR Avenue bridge, dredging of Puerto Nuevo River begins

Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón announced Thursday the start of work to replace the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Avenue bridge spanning the Puerto Nuevo River in San Juan, with a federal investment of $150.7 million from the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018.
The bridge replacement is part of the process of deepening and widening the riverbed, which will increase its current depth by two to three times, allowing stormwater from the Puerto Nuevo River to be channeled into the bay without flooding and impacting the property and life of the area’s 250,000 residents.
The resident commissioner made the announcement alongside other government officials and Brig. Gen. Daniel Hibner, the commander of the South Atlantic Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and José R. Campos, president of the contractor Ferrovial Construction PR LLC.

commissioner said. “All of us who have lived in areas of San Juan and I, who represented the fourth precinct of San Juan, know that every time strong storms come, the rains in the metropolitan area cause the river to [overflow]. This affects not only property, but even the lives of the residents of the area.”
“We have heard about the Puerto Nuevo River dredging for decades, but we had never had the resources to do it until after hurricanes Irma and Maria, when we achieved the allocations within the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018,” González Colón said. “I am happy that we were able to secure the authorization and allocation for this project, which finally allows the construction phases to begin.”
Hibner said he and the USACE “are excited to begin this important contract, which is an essential component of an ambitious project aimed at mitigating flood risk and benefiting the city of San Juan.”
“This construction effort highlights the importance of collaboration between federal and local organizations and underscores our agency’s confidence in the local construction industry,” he said.
UPR budget defense group demands meeting with fiscal board

The Front in Defense of the Budget of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) on Thursday asked for a meeting with the Financial Oversight and Management Board through a letter to the board’s executive director, Robert F. Mujica.
The Front wants to discuss the crisis at the UPR given the cuts to the budget that the oversight board and the central
government have imposed.
“Year after year, and despite the warnings [from] the university, the [oversight board] and the government insist on a policy of cuts to the UPR, in violation of the budgetary formula,” said María del Mar Rosa Rodríguez, president of the Puerto Rican Association of University Professors (APPU by its acronym in Spanish), one of the Front organizations.
“We know that the attack on the UPR is ideological, but the effects are too detrimental,” she added. “Not only does it
sustain the crisis in university education, but it also involves the health of the country because of the consequences at [the] Medical Sciences [Campus] and the Medical Center, it involves the agriculture of the country because of its consequences in the Agricultural Experimental Stations.”
“For this, we demand a meeting with the [oversight board] to demonstrate that the situation is unsustainable for the country and that it has to be reversed,” the APPU president said.
Multisectoral group urges towns to oppose PREPA debt adjustment plan

An umbrella group comprising 50 organizations from different sectors urged municipalities on Thursday to speak out against power rate hikes resulting from the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) debt adjustment plan.
The Junte Multisectorial (Multi-Sector Group) noted that the municipalities of Juana Díaz, Comerío and Manatí have already come out against the plan to pay off some $9 billion in utility debt.
“We are at a key moment in PREPA’s bankruptcy process,” said Cathy Kunkel, an energy expert and spokesperson for the group, in a written statement.
“PREPA bondholders have insisted that they be paid the full $8.5 billion in bonded debt through abusive rate increases over the next 35 years or more,” Kunkel stressed.
The Multi-Sector Group is urging municipalities to approve
resolutions that explain to the court the adverse effects of the increases on their residents. The resolutions will allow U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain, who is overseeing PREPA’s bankruptcy process, to discuss the impact of rate hikes and poor electricity service on the island, the group said.
In June, the U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston allowed bondholders, led by GoldenTree Asset Management, to insist on payment of 100% of the debt, which would require much higher increases than initially proposed. In July, Swain ordered parties back to the negotiating table, citing the First Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that found that the bonds were secured by $8.5 billion in net revenues. That decision overturned her earlier ruling, which found that the bonds were backed by only a $2.4 billion unsecured claim, and may have upended the plan of adjustment.
Cristina Palacios, director of La Liga de Ciudades de PR (League of Cities), stressed the need to focus resources on rebuilding the electricity system rather than paying bondholders.

Sara Rosario seeks new term as Olympic Committee president

Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (COPUR by its acronym in Spanish) President Sara Rosario Vélez announced Thursday at the entity’s ordinary assembly that she will seek an additional term corresponding to the new Olympic cycle.
“Yes, I will be available for four more years,” Rosario said in a written statement. “Los Angeles [the 2028 Summer Olympic Games] is a new project. We will be here to work on the new goals.”
The electoral process began at a special assembly, following a recess after the ordinary assembly ended.

EDB launches Center for the Development of Entrepreneurs

The Economic Development Bank for Puerto Rico (EDB) inaugurated on Thursday its Center for the Development of Entrepreneurs, an initiative that will offer free services to encourage the creation and growth of small and midsize businesses (SMEs by the initials in Spanish) on the island.
The effort seeks to increase the number of start-ups, provide resources and support to entrepreneurs, and facilitate access to financing.
“We want our small and midsize businesses to have a good start and be able to access the financial tools necessary to grow,” EDB President Luis Alemañy said in a written statement.
The Center, in San Juan, will enjoy the collaboration of several entities, such as Atlantic University, the island Treasury Department, and the Science, Technology and Research Trust, which will offer workshops and seminars throughout the year.
The Center for the Development of Entrepreneurs’ objective is to increase the creation of new businesses and generate jobs, with the aim of strengthening Puerto Rico’s economic resilience. The EDB will also continue to offer its Junte de Empresarios program from its headquarters in San Juan, facilitating access to financing and connections with other entrepreneurs.

Suspect’s father owned the kind of rifle used in Georgia school shooting

New details emerged Thursday as investigators continued to examine the life of a 14-year-old student accused of opening fire in his Georgia high school. Documentation obtained by The New York Times shows that, in 2022, the boy’s father owned the type of military-style rifle that officials say was used in the attack.
Police also found recent evidence that the suspect was interested in mass shootings, particularly the 2018 massacre at a high school in Parkland, Florida, according to two law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation. The teen is now accused of killing two students and two teachers — the deadliest school shooting in Georgia history.
There were also questions about potentially missed opportunities to prevent the attack. Sheriff’s officers had interviewed the teenager more than a year ago about online school shooting threats but found no definitive evidence that the boy had posted the messages, according to an investigative report obtained by the Times.

video games. “He knows the seriousness of weapons and what they can do, and how to use them and not use them,” Colin Gray told a Jackson County investigator in May 2023, according to a transcript obtained by the Times.
Here’s what else to know:
— The victims: Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14-year-old students, were killed in the hail of gunfire, along with Christina Irimie and Richard Aspinwall, who were teachers, state officials said. The nine other people in hospitals with injuries were all expected to survive.
— The suspect: Officials said the suspect, identified as Colt Gray, 14, would be charged with murder and prosecuted as an adult. The shooter had used an “AR-platform-style weapon,” officials said. Records from a 2022 eviction obtained by the Times show that the suspect’s father owned a black AR-15. It was later returned to him.
— Previous encounter: When interviewed by sheriff’s officers last year, Colin Gray said his son did not have “unfettered” access to his guns, according to the investigative report obtained by the Times. But authorities alerted local schools, officials said.
Report details interview of Georgia suspect in prior school shooting threat

The anonymous tips were sent to the FBI last May from as far away as Australia, warning that a user on Discord, a social media platform, had threatened in a chat group to possibly “shoot up a middle school.” Authorities were led to a 13-year-old living in Jackson County, Georgia.
A report from the Jackson County sheriff’s office, obtained by The New York Times, detailed how investigators looked into but were unable to definitively link those threats to the teen, who is now in custody after a shooting Wednesday morning at his high school in Winder, Georgia. He is accused of killing two students and two teachers.
Hours after the shooting, the FBI disclosed that law enforcement had investigated the online threat, which was made in May 2023. But the report from the sheriff’s office reveals more about how authorities were able to trace the post to the teenager and why — after interviewing the boy and his father — they did not take further action, other than a warning to his middle school.
According to the report, the FBI received several tips from users with internet addresses in Palmdale, California; Los Angeles; and Cockburn, a city in Western Australia,
which included the posts made in a group chat on Discord. The email associated with the account belonged to Colt Gray, the teen accused of the shooting at his school.
The investigators found that the username on the Discord account had been written in Russian. “Translation of the Russian letters spells out the name Lanza,” the investigator wrote in his report, noting that it was the surname of the perpetrator of the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in which 20 students and six teachers were killed.
In interviews with investigators, both Gray and his father, Colin Gray, said that they did not speak Russian, and the boy denied that he had been the author of the threats. He said that he had previously had a Discord account but had deleted it, claiming he had been repeatedly hacked and was “afraid someone would use his information for nefarious purposes,” an investigator wrote.
The teenager told an investigator “he would never say such a thing, even in a joking manner,” according to the report. During the interview, an investigator noted that the boy was calm and had a reserved demeanor.
His father told an investigator that he and his wife were divorced and had been
evicted from their home. His wife took their younger two children, he said, and he and his son had moved into a new home.
The father also told an investigator that his son had experienced “some problems at West Jackson Middle School, and now that he was going to Jefferson Middle School, it was a lot better.”
Colin Gray also told investigators that he had hunting rifles in the house but that his son did not have “unfettered” access to them.
Sheriff Janis G. Mangum of Jackson County said Thursday morning that her office had notified Jefferson Middle School, where Gray had been enrolled, but classes had already ended for the school year. This year, Gray had just started as a freshman at Apalachee High School in Winder, which is in neighboring Barrow County.
After interviewing the father and son May 20, 2023, the investigators determined that they had exhausted their efforts.
Liz Cheney, a top GOP Trump critic, says she will vote for Harris

Former Rep. Liz Cheney, the once highranking Republican from Wyoming who torpedoed her political career by breaking forcefully with former President Donald Trump, said Wednesday she would be voting for Vice President Kamala Harris in November.
During an event at Duke University, Cheney told students that it was not enough for her to simply oppose the former president, if she intended to do whatever was necessary to prevent Trump from winning the White House again, as she has long said she would.
“I don’t believe we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states,” Cheney said, speaking to students in the hotly contested state of North Carolina. “As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris.”
The room erupted in cheers after she made her unexpected announcement.
The decision by Cheney, whose endorsement Harris’ campaign had been courting for weeks, to shift from condemning Trump to backing the Democratic presidential nominee was a striking one even from a leader who has established herself as one of the most vocally anti-Trump Republicans in the country.
In an interview with Fox News in August of 2020, after Biden selected Harris as his running mate, Cheney described his pick as someone “whose voting record in the Senate is to the left of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.” She added: “It’s very clear, she is a radical liberal.”
Cheney, a daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is a member of a private and deeply conservative political family. She is pro-gun and anti-abortion and favors a stronger national defense.
Harris’ top aides had said they were not certain whether Cheney, who shares few policy positions with the vice president, would go a step further and make an outright endorsement of Harris, or simply spend the time between now and Election Day laying out the case against Trump.

Toomey, an ultraconservative former Republican senator from Pennsylvania, said he would not be supporting Trump in the fall, but he said he could not vote for Harris, either.
But Cheney explicitly rejected Toomey’s
approach, potentially creating a model for deeply conservative voters reluctant to back Trump to pull the lever for a Democrat for the first time in their lives.
It was her latest break with the Republican Party after losing her leadership position and then her seat for condemning Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and voting to impeach him for inciting insurrection. She spent her final months in Congress serving on the special House committee that investigated the assault, and has continued to speak out strongly against Trump and make the case publicly that he is a threat to the republic.
Cheney’s speech was an important show of support for Harris, who has been pouring tens of millions of dollars into a paid media campaign targeting anti-Trump Republicans. Harris’ campaign has hired a full-time national Republican engagement director and featured Republicans onstage at the nominating convention last month. But Cheney had remained silent until now. She chose not to speak at the Democratic National Convention, making the decision to wait for a stand-alone moment in September, closer to when early voting was set to begin.
To save the Panama Canal from drought, a disruptive fix

Ricaurte Vásquez Morales is a man obsessed with water. An app on his phone displays the fluctuating level of Lake Gatún, the artificial reservoir that is the centerpiece of the Panama Canal system. He checks it constantly, the way a gambling addict monitors football scores. He keeps a vigilant eye on the weather.
“I love a rainy day,” he said.
Vásquez Morales is the administrator of the Panama Canal, which is both the economic heart of his isthmus nation and a central artery for global trade. More than half the container cargo moving between Asia and the East Coast of the United States passes through the shortcut notched into the Central American jungle — the connector between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Last year, a drought dropped the lake to critical levels, prompting canal authorities to limit traffic. At the worst point, in December, only 22 ships a day were allowed to pass through the canal, down from the usual 36 to 38. More than 160 ships were stuck at anchor at both ends.
Rains that began in May have allowed the lifting of most restrictions, and 35 ships a day on average have made the journey in recent weeks. But canal authorities know that this is merely a respite in a new era influenced by climate change and frequent periods of El Nino, when ocean temperatures rise and rainfall decreases. They are consumed with expanding water storage.
A dam envisioned for the Río Indio, a winding river southwest of Lake Gatún, would create another reservoir that could be used to replenish the canal during droughts. The project would also flood the homes of 2,000 predominantly poor people who would need to be relocated and would risk losing their means of earning a living.
The Panama Canal is one component of a system of global trade struggling to adjust to a complex mix of environmental, geopolitical and economic changes.
Three years ago, an enormous container vessel got lodged inside the Suez Canal in Egypt, closing that waterway to ships moving between Europe and Asia. In recent months, ships headed toward the canal have been threatened by violent attacks from Houthi rebels in Yemen, prompting them to instead travel the long way around Africa, imposing delays and sending shipping rates skyward.
Strikes or threatened work stoppages have disrupted ports from Germany to Canada to the East Coast of the United States.
The trouble hovering over the Panama Canal is more existential and cannot be fixed with a cease-fire agreement or a new labor contract.
“The past 20 years have been totally different than from the previous 80 years,” said Victor Vial, the canal’s chief financial officer. “Forget about 2000 and before, because climate change has, in crescendo, had an impact that’s much different.”
Monumental drainage system
From the air, the Panama Canal is revealed as a monumental drainage system powered entirely by gravity. Lake Gatún occupies the midsection, a shimmering expanse of water seeping toward the horizons, dotted by jungle-draped islands.
Water from the lake flows through a series of canal locks that function like ladders. The locks are needed to lift ships from the coast up into the interior of the country, and then gradually down to the opposite shore. In a quirk of geography, the Pacific Coast is actually higher than the Atlantic, necessitating some sort of ladder.
Ships pull into entrances on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, then pass through pairs of floating gates that stop the water from flowing downhill, causing it to pool. Once the water rises sufficiently, lifting ships to the next stage, the gates are opened and vessels can continue. After ships cross the lake, they pass through more locks, this time headed back down to sea level. The crossing runs 50 miles and typically takes 12 hours.
Staggering volumes of water from Lake Gatún are required to make the system work. The passage of a single ship needs more than 50 million gallons of water. Every day, the canal uses 2-1/2 times the amount of water consumed by the 8 million residents of New York City.
In a normal year, some 13,000 ships complete that journey. Since last October, traffic has been running at an annual pace of only 10,000 vessels.
For much of the past year, because of the lower water levels, the largest container ships were required to reduce their cargo by unloading boxes at ports at the start of their canal journey, then hauling them across the land by truck or rail.
The canal pulls water from storage tanks built alongside the locks, reducing the amount of water drained from Lake Gatún for the passage of each ship.
But that tends to increase salinity in the lake, which is
also the source of drinking water for more than half of Panama’s 4.4 million people.
Canal authorities have been exploring ways to desalinate portions of the lake. They are also testing ways to seed clouds to increase rainfall.
But the central fix is creating a second water source for the canal with the proposed dam on the Río Indio.
Now canal authorities are focused on winning the assent of the people who are effectively in the way. It is exploring places to relocate villages, opening outreach offices in affected communities, and expanding efforts to grow cash crops such as coffee to replace livelihoods that will be uprooted.
It is also helping families secure legal title to land they have farmed for years, setting them up to receive compensation.
“At the end of the day,” Vial said, “they are going to be better off than they are now.”
‘No to the reservoir’
Olegario Hernandez is deeply suspicious of such talk.
For the past 64 years, he has lived and farmed in the village of Limon, a scattering of houses carved into the jungle in Colon province, near a bend in the coffee-colored river that is slated for the dam.
A hand-painted sign affixed to his front fence declares a popular local sentiment: “No to the reservoir.”
Hernandez’s home is constructed of rough boards and corrugated sheets of aluminum. He lacks electricity and indoor plumbing. Yet as he sits in the shade of his patio on a sweltering afternoon, he takes satisfaction in what he has constructed.
For decades, he grew corn, rice, yucca and plantains — enough to feed his six children. At 86, he can no longer work the land, instead leasing it to cattle ranchers. He has no appetite for starting over, and especially not for the sake of easing the passage for ships carrying televisions from Chinese factories to air-conditioned homes in the New York suburbs.
“They want to relocate us, but we don’t think that way,” he said. “There’s no place better.”
A
permanent problem
Inside the fortresslike offices of the canal authority in Panama City, the people in charge are proceeding on the assumption that the dam is going ahead.
“It gives you one added element to your toolbox,” said Vásquez Morales, the canal administrator.
He checks the app on his phone. Lake Gatún is at 83.5 feet, the ideal depth. He peers out the window. Menacing clouds hang low over the land, a promising portent.
Some worry that the lifting of the siege mentality — the ending of the drought — may slow momentum to expand the water supply.
“Rain not only washes the streets, it washes our minds and we think the problem is gone,” said Carlos Urriola, president of SSA International, which operates shipping terminals around the world, including at the Panama Canal. “The problem of water is a permanent one.”

S&P 500, Dow end lower ahead of key jobs data, Nasdaq up
The benchmark S&P 500 index and the Dow ended lower in choppy trading on Thursday after a shortlived boost from a string of economic reports faded and investors eyed key jobs data due on Friday. The Nasdaq finished slightly higher.
Markets were edgy ahead of the release of the comprehensive nonfarm payrolls data - which will likely set the stage for the Federal Reserve to begin cutting rates later this month.
Earlier in the session, Wall Street’s main indexes gained as reports helped allay concerns of labor market deterioration. The Institute for Supply Management survey showed services sector activity expanded in August while jobless claims declined last week, according to Labor Department data.
Eight out of 11 S&P 500 sectors lost ground, led by declines in healthcare and industrial stocks. The consumer discretionary sector led the gainers, driven partly by Tesla.
“The markets have been on this risk-on risk-off roller coaster because it’s watching the data as the Fed has said ‘we’re going to watch the data,’” said Wasif Latif, president and chief investment officer at Sarmaya Partners in Princeton, New Jersey.
“The market is watching the data to get a sense of what the economy is looking like in terms of the landing scenario and what that means for interest rate policy from the Fed.”

on average since 1928. The index is down more than 2.5% so far this week and tech stocks have fallen about 4.8%.
In August, U.S. private employers hired the fewest workers since January 2021 and data for the prior month was revised lower, potentially hinting at a sharp labor market slowdown, according to the ADP National Employment Report.
“The market wants some softness in the data, but it’s like a narrow pathway because the equity market in our view is priced for a soft landing or a no landing scenario whereas the bond market, given the rate cut expectations, is bit more priced for a recession,” Latif added.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 219.22 points, or 0.54%, to 40,755.75, the S&P 500 lost 16.66 points, or 0.30%, to 5,503.41 and the Nasdaq Composite gained
43.37 points, or 0.25%, to 17,127.66.
Tesla gained nearly 5% after the electric-vehicle maker said it will launch its full self-driving advanced driver assistance software in the first quarter next year in Europe and China, pending regulatory approval.
Frontier Communications slumped 10% after Verizon said it would buy the company in an all-cash deal worth $20 billion. Verizon shares dipped 0.4%.
JetBlue Airways jumped 7% after the carrier raised its third-quarter revenue forecast.
The S&P 500 posted 42 new 52-week highs and 9 new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 43 new highs and 136 new lows.
Total volume across U.S. exchanges was about 10.6 billion shares, down slightly from a 20-day moving average of 10.7 billion shares.
Pope finds fervent fans among Indonesia’s transgender community

The group of transgender women in South Jakarta were putting on their Sunday best. They wore feathers, silk, glitter and long eyelashes. Each one draped a rosary around her neck.
“Pope Francis deserves our best outfit,” Elvi Gondhoadjmodjo said, as the group got ready to catch a glimpse of the pope Thursday during his visit to Indonesia.
For many trans women living on the fringes of society here, the Catholic Church is a safe haven, and Pope Francis, with his messages of tolerance and openness toward the LGBTQ+ community, has become a personal hero. They were excited by his four-day visit.
“When we got Francis as the pope, I realized that God was really listening,” said Mami Yuli, the leader of the community and a devout Catholic who has a likeness of a rosary tattooed on her chest. “This is not the pope but God himself visiting us.”
At the shelter where many of them live, the group of 10 trans women squeezed into two rental cars and drove to the Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, where the pope was going to hold a Mass later Thursday. They did not have tickets to enter but hoped they could at least get a glimpse of the pope outside.
Their excitement, and the yearslong closeness between the trans community and the Catholic Church in Jakarta, is a stark contrast with less-favorable attitudes

from the church in other countries, and with positions some church officials have expressed. But it also showed how Francis’ message of tolerance has echoed in some corners of the Catholic world thousands of miles from the Vatican.
“Pope Francis has called for us several times not to judge them,” said the Rev. Agustinus Kelik Pribadi, the priest of the St. Stephen Catholic Church in South Jakarta. He was referring to the pope’s famous “Who am I to judge?” question about gay priests, which many felt reflected his general attitude toward the LGBTQ+ community. “We must listen.”
Catholics make up a very small minority in Muslim-predominant Indonesia.
Still, dozens of trans women not born into the church have been baptized in Jakarta in recent years. They came from nearly every corner of the country, said the Rev. Adrianus Suyadi, a Jesuit priest at Jakarta’s cathedral.
The ties between the church and the Jakarta trans women community are a result of the work of the city’s archbishop, Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo, the priests said. The cardinal instructed priests to welcome trans people into their parishes as part of a push to respect human dignity. Mami Yuli also lobbied the church.
The result was a rare and fond bond.
“I often went to the salon and have my hair cut with their group,” Pribadi said.
But overall, the trans community still faces rejection and discrimination in Indonesia. Many are still homeless, and others do sex work to survive, community members said.
Once a month, more than 50 trans women attend a prayer meeting at the cathedral, Suyadi said. Many frequent cooking classes organized by the church, and two have become instructors.
“When I go to the church nobody judges me,” said Gondhoadjmodjo, 40, who got baptized in 2022 and said she had started volunteering as a teacher thanks to the church. “That makes me more sure I want to be a Catholic.”

their experiences, on Zoom every Friday. “Romo is amazing,” she said, addressing Suyadi with a word that means father in Javanese.
Church teachings oppose gender transition, but Francis has long urged clerics to welcome LGBTQ+ Catholics. He hosted a group of trans women at the Vatican for lunch. He approved a Vatican document that made clear that trans people can be baptized and declared laws that criminalize being gay to be “unjust.”
But Francis has also walked a tightrope between his personal urging for more openness by the church and upholding church doctrine.
Recently, the Vatican issued a document approved by Francis stating that the church believes that transition surgery is an affront to human dignity. The pope also recently used a slur word to refer to gay people, an episode that highlighted the church’s complicated relationship with gender and sexuality.
Even so, South Jakarta’s trans community has focused instead on Francis’ positive messaging and openness.
“For us, LGBT people in Indonesia, there is never someone as high profile who sends a message of inclusiveness,” Mami Yuli said.
“He is much braver than the other popes before him,” she said, as she stood by her small shrine in the shelter, with a statuette of Mary and a picture of Jesus. “His message is a message of love and to pay attention to the little people.”
Venezuelan and proxy forces linked to at least 6 protester deaths, rights group says

enezuelan security forces and armed groups aligned with the government committed widespread violence against protesters and killed some of them following the country’s disputed presidential election, according to a report Wednesday by Human Rights Watch.
Venezuelan organizations and media outlets reported 24 killings during the demonstrations, but the report marks the first effort by
an international organization to verify some of them.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has faced widespread domestic and international condemnation over his claim that he won a July 28 presidential vote, and the ensuing violent crackdown on demonstrations protesting that claim.
The government has yet to release any vote tallies to show that Maduro won. Tallies from electoral observers released by the opposition show that he lost decisively.
The report by Human Rights Watch, a research and advocacy nonprofit headquartered in New York, details the cases of six people who died during protests at the hands of state security forces or what appeared to be armed militia groups called colectivos.
The report said it also independently verified 11 of the 24 reported deaths by reviewing photos, videos and death certificates. The organization also interviewed 20 sources, including family members, witnesses, journalists and other human rights groups.
The group said that it had received “credible reports” of all 24 killings, but that many relatives and witnesses declined to be interviewed for fear of government reprisal.
The group verified 39 videos and two photographs by analyzing the upload stamp to determine the time of day and cross-referencing that with shadows and weather conditions. They also consulted with weapons experts and forensic pathologists to evaluate the reported injuries and weapons.

One protester killed was Aníbal Romero, 24, a construction worker who joined a protest July 29 in a poor neighborhood in Caracas, the capital. Human Rights Watch reviewed a video in which police officers appear to fire weapons at the demonstrators.
Romero was hit by a bullet in the forehead around 7 p.m., according to two videos, a photograph and an audio message sent by a witness that Human Rights Watch reviewed.
The witness said that police officers did not initially allow protesters to take Romero away from the scene to a hospital. A video filmed after dark showed him lying wounded in the back of an unmoving truck. Demonstrators were eventually able to take him to the hospital, where he died, according to the audio message.

The political rage of left-behind regions

Therewere local elections in several German states a few days ago, and the results — a strong showing by the Alternative for Germany, or AfD, a right-wing extremist party — were shocking but not surprising. Shocking because, given their history, Germans more than anyone else should fear the rise of anti-democratic right-wing forces. Not surprising because the AfD has been rising for a while, especially in the former East Germany, where the elections were held.
I am not any kind of an expert on Germany, and I won’t speculate about what these results mean for the Bundesrepublik’s future. What I can say as an American is that despite the vast differences in our nations’ modern histories, the rise of Germany’s modern far right — and especially its concentration of support in economically depressed areas — looks remarkably familiar.
Put it this way: In some important respects Thuringia, the German state where the AfD won more votes than any other party, resembles West Virginia. Like West Virginia, it’s a place the 21st-century economy seems to have left behind, whose population is in decline, with younger people in particular leaving for opportunities elsewhere. And West Virginia strongly supports Donald Trump and his party, whose doctrines bear considerable resemblance to those of the AfD.
After Donald Trump won the 2016 election, there was a lot of facile talk about voters driven by economic anxiety. Voters’ real motivations are more complex than that.
But the rise of Make America Great Again does seem connected to the economic decline of much of rural and smalltown America. This decline has happened in many parts of the country, including, for example, much of upstate New York, but it is concentrated in what Benjamin Austin, Edward Glaeser and Lawrence Summers have called the “eastern heartland.” In what follows I’ll focus on numbers for West Virginia, which is arguably the heart of that heartland, and epitomizes both the economic and political problems of left-behind regions.
So what stands out when you compare West Virginia with
other parts of America is the number of men not working. I say “men” because even now, despite the rise in the percentage of women in the paid labor force since 1970, our expectation that adults of working age will, in fact, have jobs is stronger for men than for women.
In a comparison between West Virginia and New Jersey, of adults ages 20 to 64 who didn’t have jobs in 2019 (before the pandemic), adults of both sexes were much more likely not to be working in West Virginia, although the gap was larger for men (67% versus 43%).
Why is not working a problem? Obviously, it means you aren’t earning wages, but it goes deeper than that. Jobs are a source of dignity, a sense of self-worth; people who aren’t working when they feel they should be — a problem that, like it or not, is even now bigger for men than women — feel shame, which all too easily turns into anger, a desire to blame someone else and lash out.
So the lack of jobs for men helps extremist political movements that appeal to angry men. In Germany, the AfD has much stronger support among men than women. Polls show a large advantage for Kamala Harris among women in the United States, while Trump leads among men. Places where there are many men without jobs are fertile ground for MAGA, which is trying to court the “manoverse.”
Why are jobs, especially for men, so hard to get in West Virginia?
Despite what you may hear from the likes of JD Vance, native-born West Virginians aren’t losing jobs to immigrants because the state hardly has any immigrants — only 1.8% of the population is foreign-born, the lowest in the nation, while the corresponding number for New Jersey is 23.5%, close to the top.
The parallel between economic and political developments in the United States and Germany also rules out the idea that the heartland is suffering because trade deficits are undermining our manufacturing sector. For while America has indeed been running trade deficits, Germany has been running huge surpluses — yet is experiencing similar discontent and anger.
So what’s the matter with the heartland? The most likely story is that the 21st-century economy is driven by knowledgeintensive industries that flourish in metropolitan areas with highly educated workforces. This has led to a self-reinforcing process in which jobs migrate to places with lots of college graduates, and college graduates migrate to the same places, leaving less-educated places like West Virginia stranded.
Is the solution, then, for the regions that have benefited from this process to provide aid to those on the losing end? The answer, in America at least, is that they actually do in effect provide such aid, although until recently it was the result of aid to individuals rather than reflecting a deliberate “place-based” policy.
Here’s what I mean: The federal government provides a lot of support to U.S. citizens via Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; even poor states receive the full benefit of these programs. But poor states pay relatively little in federal taxes, which support these programs. So the result is huge implicit aid to lower-income states.
In effect, West Virginia received “foreign aid” from wealthier states of almost 12% of GDP, which is huge.
The state also benefited immensely from the Affordable
Care Act, which greatly reduced the number of its residents without health insurance.
You might say that the federal social safety net increases people’s incomes but doesn’t create jobs. But that’s not true. Social Security supports consumer spending, which creates jobs in retail and more. Medicare and Medicaid support jobs in hospitals, doctors’ offices, and so on. West Virginia may still think of itself as a coal-mining state, but by the numbers it has long been more accurately described as a health care state, with much of its employment ultimately driven by those federal dollars.
I guess there are some people who don’t think of employment in hospitals, or in the service sector more generally, as “real” jobs; I don’t think nurses and schoolteachers would agree.
What is true, and may partially explain political rage in leftbehind regions, is that many of the jobs federal aid creates tend to be female-coded, certainly more so than coal mining — which may in turn explain why the problem of adults without jobs appears to be worse, at least in terms of its political weight, for men than for women.
That said, the Biden-Harris administration has been making a serious effort to promote manufacturing as part of its industrial policies — an effort that seems to be disproportionately helping heartland states.
The odd thing is that the politicians angry heartland voters support — Trump received more than twice as many votes in West Virginia as Joe Biden in 2020 — oppose the very programs that aid these depressed areas. Trump tried, in effect, to kill the Affordable Care Act. Not a single Republican voted for the Inflation Reduction Act, which is helping to create manufacturing jobs in the heartland.

– La alcaldesa de Salinas, Karilyn Bonilla Colón, anunció que el jueves firmó el contrato para el inicio de la construcción de la nueva rotonda en la PR180 y el Paseo Manuel González, una de las avenidas principales hacia la Ruta Gastronómica de Playa y Playita.
“Luego de un estudio de tránsito realizado por expertos en seguridad vial, se recomendó una rotonda como la mejor alternativa para el flujo vehicular en dicha intersección, versus la opción de semáforos, opción que el estudio descartó”, explicó Bonilla Colón. Los trabajos inician en octubre.

AN JUAN – El secretario del Departamento del Trabajo y Recursos Humanos (DTRH), Gabriel Maldonado González, presentó a principios de esta semana el primer Informe de Equidad Salarial durante la segunda edición del Reset HR Puerto Rico Summit.
El informe, realizado al amparo de la Ley de Igualdad Salarial de Puerto Rico, revela que la disparidad salarial entre mujeres y hombres persiste y ha aumentado desde la pandemia.
“En Puerto Rico persiste una disparidad entre los salarios de mujeres y hombres por realizar un mismo trabajo. Aunque muchos patronos hacen lo correcto, queda mucho camino por recorrer”, afirmó Maldona-
do González el miércoles en declaraciones escritas.
Entre los hallazgos del informe se destaca que, mientras la participación laboral de las mujeres aumentó al 38 por ciento entre 2017 y 2023, la brecha salarial se amplió. En 2019, las mujeres ganaban 92 centavos por cada dólar devengado por hombres, pero en 2023 esa cifra bajó a 83 centavos. Además, el salario promedio en 2023 fue de 19,456 dólares para mujeres y 23,537 dólares para hombres.
Durante el evento, expertos en recursos humanos también compartieron estrategias para atraer y retener talento, y se presentaron herramientas innovadoras como el Portal de Empleo y Reclutamiento para Facilitar la Integración Laboral (PERFIL), impulsado por inteligencia artificial, que conecta aspirantes con patronos.

Pedro Almodóvar, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton on ‘The Room Next Door’

At Monday night’s Venice after-party for “The Room Next Door,” Pedro Almodóvar beamed at his leading ladies as they beamed back.
I’m not just speaking of the affection shared among Julianne Moore, Tilda Swinton and their director, though it was tangible. I’m talking about the actual beams of light that bounced off the women’s sequined gowns and back at their besotted director as we huddled in a room to discuss the Spanish director’s first feature film in English, a longheld goal that allowed him to cast two big Hollywood stars.
“They are not actors now, they are like monuments,” Almodóvar said. Certainly, that’s how Moore and Swinton are presented on the poster for the film, which arranges their famous faces in profile as if they were massive mountain ranges.
“Big peaks,” joked Moore.
“Big sparkly peaks,” Swinton added, nodding to their dresses. “We can only wear sequins for the rest of our lives.”
Adapted from the novel “What Are You Going Through” by Sigrid Nunez, “The Room Next Door” casts Moore as Ingrid, a successful author who hears that her former colleague Martha (Swinton) is in the hospital with inoperable cervical cancer. They reunite, swap catch-up stories and once again become fast friends, but Martha has a weighty request to make.
With her experimental treatments failing and another taxing round of chemotherapy to come, Martha has booked a vacation
house in upstate New York and bought a drug off the dark web. Might Ingrid be willing to accompany her on the trip, knowing that at some point, her friend will kill herself in the room next door?
Though Almodóvar is fairly fluent in English, he had long been wary of shooting a feature film in the language. (Even as we spoke, he kept a translator close by for moments when his second language failed him.)
Two recent shorts made in English — the gay Western “Strange Way of Life” and the extended Swinton monologue “The Human Voice” — persuaded Almodóvar to finally write his first feature-length screenplay in the language.
But Almodóvar’s films have aesthetic pleasures that go beyond words, and “The Room Next Door” offers so much to look at — whether it’s a lavender sweater, an olive couch or a precisely chosen shade of burgundy lipstick — that is as satisfying as any line of dialogue. A sequence in which the two women ransack Martha’s apartment reveals pulled drawers filled with the most beguiling knickknacks, and the upstate vacation house where much of the movie takes place is an architectural stunner. (Like Martha, I’d die to live there, too.)
Moore said that sometimes during the shoot, Almodóvar’s mise-en-scene was so strong that she got goose bumps.
“I had an experience where I looked at my green turtleneck and Tilda’s purple jacket and I was like, ‘Oh, my God, we’ve walked into one of his movies,’” she said.
All that beauty isn’t frivolous, either: Almodóvar observes that in the face of something grim, the pursuit of pleasure can be a defiant act or even an assertion of life itself. The contrast is drawn most clearly when Ingrid reunites with an old lover (John Turturro) who delivers lectures on climate change and soon lectures Ingrid, too. “You’re living with a dying woman in a world also in its death throes,” he tells her.
“You cannot go around telling people there’s no hope,” she replies. “There are a lot of ways to live inside a tragedy.”
Ultimately, that’s the lesson of “The Room Next Door,” which Sony Pictures Classics will release in select theaters in December. At the film’s news conference in Venice, Almodóvar spoke about the myriad world issues that worry him but noted, “Optimism is the best way to resist.”
And though this film and his recent drama “Pain and Glory” demonstrate that the 74-year-old is grappling with his own mortality, he has no intention of slowing down anytime soon. He is planning to shoot a new feature next year, and at the afterparty, he began pitching Swinton on a movie he’d had in mind for her years ago, a riff on “Cat People” in which she’d play a mermaid.
The more he told her about the project, the more enthralled both actresses became. “Let’s do it!” Swinton said. “We have witnesses now. Why not?” She was beaming, and it wasn’t just the sequins.

Asimple but lavish bath of olive oil and lemon juice is the Italian way of showing off superfresh seafood. The key, according to Marcella Hazan, is that the dish should never see the inside of a refrigerator, which changes the texture of the seafood and the flavor of the olive oil. She calls for shrimp in this recipe, but the formula also works with squid, clams and meaty fish fillets.

Ingredients:
3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more as needed
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (from 1 to 2 lemons)
2 pounds medium-large shrimp (about 26 to 30 per pound), peeled and deveined (tails optional)
Flaky sea salt and coarsely ground black pepper
1 large pinch freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley
Torn or sliced crusty bread, for serving
Preparation:
1. Bring a pot of water to a boil, preferably not too deep, so you can watch the shrimp as they cook. Pour the olive oil and lemon juice into a baking or serving dish, preferably a white one to show off the colors of the finished dish.
2. Working in a few batches to prevent overcooking, boil the shrimp over high until just firm and opaque, 2 to 3 minutes, removing them to a colander with a slotted spoon. When all the shrimp are cooked, transfer them to the olive oil-lemon bath and gently mix to coat. Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. The shrimp should be just covered with liquid; pour in more oil as needed. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
3. Just before serving, taste and adjust the seasonings with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with parsley and serve with bread, spooning some liquid over each serving.

La Subasta se llevará a efecto para satisfacer a la parte demandante la suma de $150,220.65 de principal, más intereses sobre dicha suma al 4.50% anual, desde el 1ro. de junio de 2013, hasta su completo pago, más recargos acumulados, más la cantidad de $15,700.40 estipulada para costas, gastos y honorarios de abogado, así como cualquier otra suma estipulada en el contrato de préstamo, todas cuyas sumas están líquidas y exigibles. Que la cantidad mínima de licitación en la primera subasta para el inmueble será de $157,004.00 y de ser necesaria una segunda subasta, la cantidad mínima será equivalente a 2/3 partes de aquella, o sea, la suma de $104,669.33 y de ser necesaria una tercera subasta, la cantidad mínima será la mitad del precio pactado, es decir, la suma de $78,502.00. Need for change is a tough sell for many teams

Fans in several cities with MLB teams want change — ownership changes, in some cases, but front office changes, at the very least.
Many of those changes seem unlikely.
“I’m a huge believer in stability and continuity, and those are competitive advantages in professional sports, that reacting and change don’t necessarily mean improvement,” Mark Shapiro, the president of the Toronto Blue Jays, said last month when asked about the job status of his general manager, Ross Atkins.
No one should be surprised in the coming weeks to hear similar comments from other executives with disappointing clubs. Which raises the questions: Why are owners so complacent? Why aren’t more front offices on the hot seat?
Fans of the Blue Jays are exasperated, if not angry. The same is true for fans of the St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates. Those teams intended to contend. They did not. And more trust-the-process blather is probably coming their fans’ way. Insular, sad sack franchises — the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Miami Marlins and Colorado Rockies, to name four — belong in a separate category. They barely bothered to try.
Managers are easy scapegoats. The Mariners already fired theirs. The Reds, Pirates and others might, too. But modern managers are glorified middlemen, extensions of their front offices. A managerial change is often an act of deflection by the head of baseball operations, a bid to buy more time.
Shapiro had a point. Stability and continuity indeed should be valued. If teams reacted to every fan eruption, they would be firing people every three days. Still, the passivity in the sport is disturbing.
Part of it may stem from the expansion
of the postseason in 2022, and the illusion of contention provided by the addition of a third wild card in each league. Groupthink is another factor. Fire your head of baseball operations, and whom will you hire? Probably another executive whose decision making is not that dissimilar from the one you let go.
The biggest issue, though, is that many teams do not face the kind of financial pressure that would motivate a business to act. Most franchises evidently have it quite good, not that you would know it from their occasional sky-is-falling rhetoric.
But consider how some teams operate:
The Blue Jays are in last place with a clubrecord payroll. They have not won a playoff game since 2016, the year after Alex Anthopoulos, who was the team’s general manager, rejected a five-year extension to work under Shapiro.
But why should the team’s owner, Rogers Communications, worry? Rogers has a monopoly on baseball in Canada, and the team ranks ninth in the majors in home attendance, even with renovations reducing the capacity at Rogers Centre.
The Cardinals face the possibility of finishing with losing records in back-to-back full seasons for the first time since 1958 and 1959. Their loss of 4,561 fans per game in attendance is the second largest in the sport, behind only the New York Mets’. The growing apathy in St. Louis was especially apparent during an August series against the Brewers, when attendance twice dropped below 30,000 for the first time since Busch Stadium III opened in 2006.
All that should compel team owner Bill DeWitt Jr. to orchestrate a graceful exit for his president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak, the game’s second-longest tenured lead executive. Such a move would enable DeWitt to elevate former Red Sox executive Chaim Bloom, who joined the club as an adviser this

season, or make an outside hire.
But here is the thing: Mozeliak has publicly acknowledged his desire to step back from day-to-day responsibilities when his contract expires at the end of 2025. And DeWitt is not the type to push things along when attendance at Busch Stadium, even in decline, remains the seventh highest in the sport.
The Giants hired a new manager and committed nearly $400 million in new guaranteed money last offseason, and to what end? Not only are they chasing the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West but also the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres. In six seasons under their president of baseball operations, Farhan Zaidi, the Giants’ only outright success was in 2021, an outlier year in which they won 107 games.
This season could be their third consecutive at .500 or below. But Zaidi, who signed an extension of unknown length last October, could still be safe. Like DeWitt, Giants owner Greg Johnson is not one for disruption, particularly when his team’s attendance increase from 2023 is the seventh largest in the sport.
The Mariners are run by yet another inert owner, John Stanton. They achieved a major breakthrough in 2022, ending a 21-year postseason drought, at that time the longest in professional sports. But what have they done in the two seasons since? They have drawn criticism from catcher Cal Raleigh for not spending enough, led the majors in strikeouts a second consecutive year and, on Aug. 23, replaced manager Scott Servais with a beloved former player, Dan Wilson.
The team still faces long playoff odds, wasting the best pitching staff in the majors. The team’s president of baseball operations,
Jerry Dipoto, is completing his ninth season. His sloppy handling of Servais’ dismissal only added to fan frustration. But he seems to maintain Stanton’s confidence, and it would be an upset if the team started over.
The Reds, coming off an 82-80 finish, spent more than $110 million in free agency. Yet it seemed fitting their season all but ended at home in mid-August, when they were outscored by the Kansas City Royals, 28-3, in a three-game sweep. The Royals invested wisely during the offseason. The Reds committed $45 million to infielder Jeimer Candelario, who was an odd fit, and traded one of their top pitching investments, Frankie Montas, to the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Reds strike out too much. They do not play good defense. With the exception of shortstop Elly De La Cruz, their position players are not improving.
Bob Castellini, unlike some of the other owners mentioned, is not necessarily the type to sit back, particularly with attendance flat. Manager David Bell would appear in greater jeopardy than the president of baseball operations, Nick Krall. In any case, the clock keeps ticking. The Reds have not won a playoff game in 12 years, or a playoff series since 1995.
The Pirates are headed for their sixth consecutive losing season, with general manager Ben Cherington presiding over the past five. The difference this year is that team owner Bob Nutting said in February that he expected a “meaningful step forward,” adding, “We collectively believe we can compete for the division and a postseason berth.”
An 8-21 collapse, most of which came after Cherington made modest additions at the trade deadline, ended any chance of either occurring. But attendance is up nearly 2,000 per game — thank you, Paul Skenes — and Nutting, whose estimated worth is $1.1 billion, continues to wallow in his revenue-sharing windfall.
Cherington, like every head of baseball operations, can point to a handful of player development successes as proof that better days lie ahead. Struggling teams always point to tomorrow. Some, like the Baltimore Orioles, eventually get to a better place. But too many others are running what amounts to a borderline con.
In most cases, the problem starts with ownership, not the head of baseball operations. Owners should be scrambling to find the next Anthopoulos, the next Dave Dombrowski, the next A.J. Preller.
Financial commitment is one thing. Emotional commitment is another, and too many owners see no need to make that type of investment. Stability and continuity represent the easy way out, even when such noble concepts fail to produce results.
When financial success is attainable without on-field success, why rock the boat?
