The San Juan Daily Star, the only paper with News Service in English in Puerto Rico, publishes 7 days a week, with a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday edition, along with a Weekend Edition to cover Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Governor to file bill to remove police from Public Safety Dept.

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón announced Monday that this week she will file legislation to remove the Puerto Rico Police from the Department of Public Safety (DSP by its initials in Spanish).

“It is ready, the document has already been reviewed, I have already seen the draft, they are evaluating some details, but the document is ready to be submitted this week,” the governor said at a press conference.

“This bill is a campaign promise,” González Colón added. “This bill to remove the police from the Department of Public Safety is to give it agility in the purchase of materials, purchase of services, appointments, personnel procedures, evaluation -- it does not have to be asking for authorization from anyone, because it would be its own boss.”

“And that is why I recruited agent Joseph González [for police commissioner], because he directed the FBI in Puerto Rico, he knows, he has the experience, he has the ‘expertise’ and the vision that I want for a safer Puerto Rico,” the governor continued. “That is why I want to give him all the tools so that he, as the agent in charge, does not have to be dependent on requesting authorizations from another agency or doing paperwork through another agency.”

The governor asserted that the change will help speed up processes.

“I am going to give … a better example,” she said. “A police officer who has to wait for a bulletproof vest. A po-

lice officer who has to wait for a patrol car to be repaired, a motorcycle to be repaired. Agents who have to wait for services that they have to contract to or carry out with another agency. Or personnel procedures, No, all this has to run directly within the agency. Nobody knows that better than that agency itself. And although the intention [to create the umbrella DSP] was good in 2017-2018, the reality is that this agency requires having agility and internal mobility. And that is why I promised this during the campaign.”

González Colón said she is not going to remove other agencies from the DSP, so the Bureau of Emergency Management and Disaster Administration, Firefighters Bureau, 9-1-1 Emergency System, Medical Emergencies and Special Investigations Bureau would remain under that department, which is led by Gen. Arturo Garffer Croley.

The LGBTQ+ Federation of Puerto Rico has officially opposed a bill that it says would permit faith-based organizations to discriminate against same-sex couples seeking to adopt.

“Representative Jorge Navarro has once again introduced an unnecessary and clearly unconstitutional measure,” stated Pedro Julio Serrano, president of the LGBTQ+ Federation. “Instead of addressing the country’s pressing issues, he aims to legalize discrimination against LGBTQ+ couples. This approach is bordering on cruelty.”

LGBTQ+ Federation Director Dr. Carmen Milagros Vélez Vega added: “We will fight against this discriminatory measure. If my wife and I had to struggle for years to achieve adoption, we are prepared to do it again for all LGBTQ+ couples looking to create a family.”

In 2015, Vélez Vega and her wife, Dr. Angeles Acosta, became the first LGBTQ+ couple to have their right to adopt recognized by the court.

“This measure seems designed to appeal to fundamentalist voters,” the federation’s representatives said in a written statement. “It does not address any urgent problems; instead, it seeks to further violate the rights of LGBTQ+ couples who wish to build families and undermines the well-being of minors who deserve a loving, accepting, and respectful home.”

Lawmakers, mayors add voices to growing bipartisan opposition to planned closure of several LUMA customer service centers

Several Popular Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers from the island House of Representatives and Senate on Monday joined a growing chorus of opposition to a decision by LUMA Energy, the private operator of Puerto Rico’s electric power transmission and distribution system, to close some half a dozen of its customer service centers in several municipalities.

District 19 (Mayagüez-San Germán) Rep. Lilibeth “Lilly” Rosas Vargas, District 16 (Isabela, San Sebastián and the Guerrero neighborhood of Aguadilla) Rep. Rey Figueroa and District 27 (Aibonito, Coamo, Juana Diaz, Santa Isabel and Salinas) Rep. Estrella Martínez Soto, all of the PDP, joined with Ponce District Sen. Marially González Huertas to express their vigorous opposition to the move, a day after the Puerto Rico Mayors Federation, which groups municipal executives from the New Progressive Party (NPP), and at least two NPP senators did the same.

The decision to close the offices in the municipalities of Utuado, San Germán, Naranjito, Manatí, Santa Isabel and San Sebastián, announced Sunday and slated to take effect March 28, would negatively affect accessibility for families and seniors who do not have the technological skills or means of transportation to avail themselves of services in other distant locations, the lawmakers and mayors pointed out.

“This is one more example of LUMA’s lack of commitment to the people of Puerto Rico, and especially to our constituents in District 19,” Rosas Vargas said Monday. “The closure of these centers will not only reduce constituents’ direct access to customer service, but also highlights LUMA’s disconnection from the real needs of the people. This decision affects vulnerable communities that depend on close and direct access to the services offered in this town.”

Figueroa likewise expressed his strongest repudiation of the planned closure of the office in San Sebastián along with other centers on the island level.

“It is unacceptable that, at a time when we most need close and accessible attention, LUMA decides to close key offices in towns like San Sebastián, leaving many citizens without a nearby place to go to resolve their problems

related to the electrical service,” he said.

The lawmaker asked LUMA to reconsider the measure in favor of seeking alternatives that ensure equal access to all citizens, especially the most vulnerable.

“The closure of this office not only affects San Sebastián, but reflects a lack of sensitivity on the part of LUMA toward the needs of our towns,” Figueroa said. “We demand that viable solutions be offered so that residents do not have to face additional difficulties to carry out such essential procedures,”

Earlier on Monday, Martínez Soto stated her “categorical” opposition to the move.

“I oppose LUMA Energy’s decision to eliminate the Customer Experience Center in the municipality of Santa Isabel,” she said. “Given the constant problems with the electric power service, it is vital that people with limited resources and our elderly have a physical place where they can go to report their situations.”

“As if the constant blackouts were not enough,” she added, “now our humble people will not even have anywhere to go to call for good service. I demand more empathy and sensitivity from LUMA with my constituents. Enough abuse!”

González Huertas said she firmly opposes the announced closure of the LUMA service office in Utuado.

“This closure represents a serious detriment to the residents of our Mountain region,

who depend on direct and personal access to the services and support offered by the only energy distribution company in the country,” she said.

“The LUMA office in Utuado has been an essential piece in customer service, providing a space where citizens can resolve their concerns, manage their accounts and receive information about this essential service,” she added. “The decision to close this office will disregard the needs of many people, especially those who lack access to digital technologies or who face difficulties communicating by phone.”

González Huertas also urged LUMA “to reconsider this decision and prioritize the well-being of the community” and called on local leaders to join in the effort to keep the LUMA service office open in La Montaña.

“Together, we can demand that our voice be heard and the impact that this decision will have on our community be taken into account,” the senator said.

On Sunday, after LUMA announced its decision to close the regional service offices, NPP Sens. Rafael “Rafy” Santos Ortiz and Wilmer Reyes Berríos, both of whom represent groupings of southern towns in the upper chamber, expressed their opposition to the closure of LUMA’s commercial offices in the municipalities of Naranjito, Cayey and Santa Isabel, warning that this decision would significantly weaken customer service and negatively affect the quality of life of thousands of families.

The LUMA offices “are essential facilities for citizens, especially in remote towns where access to these services is crucial,” Santos Ortiz said. “We will be vigilant and, from going forward, we express our total opposition to this action. This is an essential service that, in addition, already has a high cost for subscribers.”

“It is unacceptable that citizens now have to wait even longer to receive assistance due to the elimination of these centers,” he added. “I trust that LUMA will reconsider this action.”

Reyes Berríos sent a communique on Sunday to LUMA President & CEO Juan Saca with copies sent to Josué Colón Ortiz, the island’s energy czar, and Puerto Rico Energy Bureau Commissioner Edison Avilés Deliz.

“The closure of these offices imposes an additional burden on our residents, especially the elderly and those who do not have reliable access to digital platforms or adequate trans-

portation to get to other municipalities,” Reyes Berríos said. “In addition, it limits access to in-person and personalized attention, making it difficult to resolve problems with billing, claims and other essential matters.”

The Mayors Federation wasted no time in rejecting LUMA’s decision on Sunday to close the centers.

Federation president and mayor of Camuy, Gabriel Hernández, described the company’s decision as a blow to the residents of these communities, especially the elderly population. The NPP mayors called on LUMA to reconsider the decision and explore other alternatives that do not harm citizens.

“While it is true that there are digital alternatives to make payments, it is also true that many people, especially our seniors, do not have the technological skills or internet access to use them,” Hernández said. “The closure of these offices leaves them in a vulnerable position and further limits their options.”

Hernández emphasized that the mayors will enforce their duty to ensure the well-being of the people.

“The Federation requested a meeting with LUMA to evaluate the real impact of this decision and look for solutions that address the needs of our people,” he said. “We await the response from LUMA’s directors and we trust that it will be affirmative and as soon as possible.”

Energy czar: Puerto Rico likely to experience blackouts this summer

Energy czar Josué Colón Ortiz acknowledged on Monday that Puerto Rico is at risk of experiencing blackouts this summer due to the lack of operational power generation units.

“This puts the electrical system in a vulnerable situation,” Colón stated during a radio interview. “We are trying to address this issue in other ways, but we are obviously working on it. The likelihood of load shifting this summer, given the current condition of the generating units and the breakdowns experienced by Genera, places the energy

production system in a highly vulnerable state.”

Genera PR is the private operator of the island’s legacy power plants.

Colón specifically pointed out issues with Unit 1 of the Aguirre Central plant in Salinas, which will not be available for the remainder of the year following the conclusion of an inspection after a breakdown.

“This means that even if all the units currently undergoing repairs, such as San Juan 6, San Juan 7, Costa Sur Unit 5, and Palo Seco Unit 4, become operational, we will still face challenges,” he said. “One of the Aguirre units, which may potentially be

repaired quickly after an upcoming inspection offshore in the manufacturer’s workshops, will not be ready for summer. Its availability might be delayed even further.”

Colón also confirmed that he and Gov. Jenniffer González Colón have sent notifications of noncompliance to both LUMA Energy, the transmission and distribution system operator, and Genera PR.

Colón said they are the first breach notifications sent to the companies, as none were issued during the time in which Fermín Fontanés Gómez directed the Public-Private Partnerships Authority, now helmed by Colón.

Ex-EPA official: Proposed Cabo Rojo development is not viable

The former director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Caribbean Environmental Protection Division in San Juan, Carl Soderberg, said Monday that the proposed Esencia development consisting of residences and commercial facilities on over 2,000 acres of land in Cabo Rojo is not viable because of a lack of sufficient water supplies.

Although the project developers do not rule out creating a private aqueduct and then connecting it to the public system, the expert stressed that the process goes beyond installing a pipe as there are few water resources.

The Esencia development has sparked

Starting this week, the island Department of Education has begun the process of evaluating school transportation services for students in the Special Education program. The initiative seeks to obtain the opinions of parents and guardians on the quality of services.

“Parents’ input on the services their children receive in Special Education is essential for us. It helps us improve and address any situation that may arise,” Education Secretary Eliezer Ramos Parés said. “We call

debate in the community and raised questions about the balance between progress and preservation. Although the development could reap economic benefits, the magnitude and location of the project have raised concerns about its effects on an area known for its ecological diversity and limited natural resources.

For some communities, a project like Esencia could mean infrastructure improvements such as new roads, electricity, and basic services that would also benefit the surrounding community.

However, opponents say construction in protected areas endangers Cabo Rojo’s unique ecosystems. Species of birds, plants, and animals that depend on the area’s wetlands and lagoons would be displaced, upsetting an

ecological balance that has sustained the region’s biodiversity for centuries, they point out.

Opponents of the plan argue that a development of such magnitude would put a great strain on basic services. As Soderberg mentioned, Cabo Rojo already faces challenges with waste management, water supply and road maintenance. An increase in population could overload those systems, adversely affecting residents and visitors alike.

Environmentalists also say the geology of the area, with land that is not ideal for largescale construction, poses risks of erosion and landslides. The project would have to address and mitigate those challenges to avoid environmental disasters.

During recent hearings, it was revealed that there were 140 archaeological resources in the area, but more than 50% of the land has not been evaluated due to dense vegetation. The Institute of Puerto Rican Culture has not yet approved the archaeological report, leaving many questions about the validity of the current studies.

Power grid operator LUMA Energy has not given final approval for the project’s electrical supply. The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority has indicated that there is not enough capacity to supply the development.

Zoning changes are proposed that do not comply with the 2015 Land Use Plan, impacting protected rural land.

on everyone to participate in this survey and in any initiative that seeks to strengthen our program and services.”

The survey, developed by the Office of Class Action Monitor Rosa Lydia Vélez, will be available through March 31. Its purpose is to measure the perception of parents and guardians about the quality of the school transportation service. Participation in the survey is completely voluntary and will not affect in any way the services to which the student is entitled. In addition, the information will be handled with strict confidentiality and answers will not be shared with third

parties.

How to participate in the evaluation

Parents and guardians may complete the questionnaire in the following ways:

• Online platform: Through the following link: https://az-mipe-registry-web. azurewebsites.net/questionnaire-service

They will also receive an email with access instructions on the Transportation Questionnaire.

• Paper Process: For those who have difficulty with the digital format, questionnaires will be available in paper form at schools and Special Education Service Centers (SESCs).

As utility bills soar, New Yorkers face the cost of a greener future

When New Yorkers get a sky-high energy bill, many turn to social media and vent their frustrations on Instagram, TikTok or Reddit. Recently, their rage has been directed toward a state-run website, too.

In January, the Department of Public Service, which regulates utilities, began considering a request for a rate increase by Con Edison, the energy company that serves more than 9 million people in New York City and Westchester County.

The proposed increase would “support clean energy investments needed to build and maintain the grid of the future,” Con Edison said in a statement. But that was cold comfort to the New Yorkers who submitted about 800 mostly irate comments on the government website in February alone.

“Our ConEd bill has already spiked to over $500 for a 1 BEDROOM Apartment this January to February,” wrote one typical customer. “Please do something about this and vote no more increases!”

The backlash to the proposed rates — which called for an 11.4% increase for electricity and 13.3% for gas — illustrated what could be a thorny issue for decades to come: persuading New Yorkers to absorb some of the cost of the state’s transition to green energy.

Many utility customers are in favor of upgrading the power grid in pursuit of the state’s renewable energy goals, but many also appear to be balking at paying more.

“I support the goals of infrastructure improvement and clean energy transition, but we must find a more balanced approach that doesn’t place such a heavy financial burden on consumers,” wrote Deena Lettas, 33, from Astoria, Queens, in one posted comment.

Lettas, who works in public policy, summed up the challenges that lie ahead as New York, in adherence to its 2019 climate law, weans off fossil fuels while electrifying buildings and cars. The shift puts more pressure on the state’s aging grid, which is also facing surging demand from energy-hungry tech ventures like chip manufacturing, data centers and cryptocurrency mines.

Over the next 20 years, electricity demand could increase 50% to 90%, according to a report by the New York Independent System Operator, which oversees the state’s power grid. The same report projects that the grid’s capacity must triple by 2042, which is

two years after the deadline for meeting the state’s zero-emissions target.

Paying for such an undertaking involves delicate negotiations among energy companies, their customers and the state government.

Utilities such as Con Edison must build out their electric grids while maintaining and updating gas systems, investments that some environmental advocates and municipal planners say are at odds.

Con Edison’s proposed hikes could mean gas bill increases (estimated at about $46 for a typical account) that are triple those for electricity (about $14). This is partly because the demand for gas is predicted to decline, which means the company would pay for crucial maintenance with less money coming in, a spokesperson said. Utilities call this dynamic “the death spiral.”

Energy bills can surge from season to season for a number of reasons. During the summer, air conditioners work at full tilt, and during the winter, gas-fueled heat cranks up. Several economic factors, including inflation and the fluctuating price of fuel and electricity, also affect costs.

But a larger burden is increasingly being placed on ratepayers because of the need to upgrade the infrastructure for both electricity and gas systems. The costs of these projects show up in a bill’s delivery charges.

A Con Edison spokesperson added that delivery charges also include property taxes on energy infrastructure, which are estimated to cost more than $3 billion in 2026. The company is interested, she said, in working with policymakers to redirect that revenue toward bill relief or clean energy programs.

Paul Feiner, the town supervisor of Greenburgh, New York, wrote on the public service website that the “inflated delivery charges” were “debilitating my constituents, many of whom are seniors and/or lower income and cannot afford to pay their ever-escalating energy bills.”

The economic effects of global warming are touching almost every aspect of life now, environmental experts say.

“Climate change is already affecting us all financially, through higher property insurance premiums, medical costs, costs of agricultural products and groceries at our supermarkets, and of course taxes,” said Kenneth Gillingham, a professor of environmental and energy economics at Yale University.

The Public Service Department, along with other key players including consumer groups, scrutinizes each proposal to change rates. It takes into account written testimony and holds public hearings, while regulators examine a utility’s books to identify ways

to cut costs.

At the end of this process, which takes at least 11 months, a bipartisan board appointed by the governor will consider whether to approve new rates. If Con Edison’s are approved, they should show up on bills in 2026. The final rates tend to be much lower than what was originally requested, a department spokesperson said. In 2023, Con Edison’s request was reduced by 60%.

According to a 2022 state report, New York’s energy transition could cost between $270 and $295 billion, but the health and economic benefits associated with lower greenhouse gas emissions are estimated to be valued at about $400 billion.

Several political leaders and climate activists are pushing for legislation that would both speed the clean energy transition along and address affordability issues.

The New York HEAT Act would allow utilities to offer geothermal or electrification services instead of automatically providing gas hookups, as is currently required. It would also direct the state to develop a plan to cap energy bills at 6% of a household’s salary.

Although state assistance is available for low-income New Yorkers, there are still more than 1 million households that are behind on paying their bills, said Laurie Wheelock, executive director of the Public Utility Law Project, an advocacy group.

In December, more than 1.38 million energy bills were in arrears in New York, amounting to more than $1.8 billion in money owed to utilities, according to government data compiled by the project. Of that, Con Edison was owed almost $950,000.

A protest against rate hikes and in support of legislation that seeks to curb them in front of the Con Edison building in New York, Feb. 21, 2025. The utility that serves New York City and Westchester County has filed a request to raise its rates to help pay for the shift to cleaner energy, sparking dismay among residents. Immigration authorities arrest pro-Palestinian activist at Columbia

Federal immigration authorities on Saturday detained a well-known activist who played a major role in Columbia University’s pro-Palestinian student movement last year, his lawyer said Sunday.

The arrest of the activist, a legal permanent resident of the United States, was a significant escalation of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on what he has called antisemitic campus activity.

The activist, Mahmoud Khalil, is of Palestinian heritage and graduated in December with a master’s degree from the university’s school of international affairs, according to his LinkedIn. His lawyer, Amy Greer, confirmed that he was a green card holder and said the arrest would face a vigorous legal challenge.

“We will vigorously be pursuing Mahmoud’s rights in court, and will continue our efforts to right this terrible and inexcusable — and calculated — wrong committed against him,” Greer said in a statement. The arrest, she said, “follows the U.S. government’s open repression of student activism and political speech.”

Greer said she was not sure of Khalil’s “precise whereabouts,” and that he may have been transferred as far away as Louisiana. Khalil’s wife, an American citizen who is eight months pregnant, tried to visit him at a detention center in New Jersey but was told he was not being held there, Greer said.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin, said in a statement Sunday night that Khalil had been arrested “in support of President Trump’s executive orders prohibiting antisemitism.”

“Khalil led activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization,” she said. “ICE and the Department of State are committed to enforcing President Trump’s executive orders and to protecting U.S. national security.”

On Sunday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared a link on social platform X to a

news article about Khalil’s arrest and issued a broad promise: “We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported.”

The immigration agents who detained Khalil told him his student visa had been revoked, Greer said, even though he does not currently hold such a visa. Revoking a green card is quite rare, said Elora Mukherjee, director of the immigrants’ rights clinic at Columbia Law School, and in a vast majority of cases where it does happen, the holder has been accused and convicted of criminal offenses, she said.

If the government was to revoke Khalil’s green card “in retaliation for his public speech, that is prohibited by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution,” Mukherjee said, adding that she was still learning details about this particular case.

Jodi Ziesemer, director of the immigrant protection unit at the New York Legal Assistance Group, said the revocation process is typically lengthy. A green card holder can be detained, but not deported, during that process, she said.

Khalil was a fixture at the protests that engulfed Columbia last spring, making the New York City campus the national epicenter of demonstrations against the war in the Gaza Strip. He described his role to reporters as a

negotiator and spokesperson for Columbia’s pro-Palestinian group, Columbia University Apartheid Divest.

The Trump administration has made Columbia the first target of its push to punish what the president has deemed elite schools’ failures to protect Jewish students during campus protests.

On Friday, the administration announced that it had canceled $400 million in grants and contracts to the university. In a social media post last week, Trump vowed to punish individual protesters his administration considered “agitators.”

“All federal funding will STOP for any College, School or University that allows illegal protests,” Trump wrote. “Agitators will be imprisoned/or permanently sent back to the country from which they came. American students will be permanently expelled or, depending on the crime, arrested.”

In a statement Sunday, Columbia administrators did not comment directly on the arrest.

“Columbia is committed to complying with all legal obligations and supporting our student body and campus community,” the statement read. “We are also committed to the legal rights of our students and urge all members of the community to be respectful of those rights.”

The arrest drew swift condemnation

from some free speech groups, immigrant rights’ activists and politicians on Sunday.

Donna Lieberman, director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement that the detention “reeks of McCarthyism.” She added that the arrest was “a frightening escalation of Trump’s crackdown on proPalestine speech and an aggressive abuse of immigration law.”

Zohran Mamdani, a New York Assembly member from Queens who is running for New York City mayor, called the detention “a blatant assault on the First Amendment and a sign of advancing authoritarianism under Trump.” Mamdani, a democratic socialist, has faced backlash from some pro-Israel groups for his criticism of Israel.

And Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition, said in a statement, “This blatantly unconstitutional act sends a deplorable message that freedom of speech is no longer protected in America.”

But the Columbia Jewish Alumni Association, which has been calling for aggressive action against pro-Palestinian demonstrators, praised Khalil’s detention in a series of social media posts, calling Khalil, without evidence, a “ringleader” of the chaos at Columbia.

Khalil told Reuters before his arrest Saturday that he feared that he would be targeted by the federal government.

“Clearly Trump is using the protesters as a scapegoat for his wider agenda fighting and attacking higher education and the Ivy League education system,” he said.

Khalil was active as a negotiator for protesters last week at Barnard College, a women’s college affiliated with Columbia, which erupted after the college announced that it was expelling two students for disrupting a course on modern Israel. When Barnard’s president, Laura Rosenbury, called protesters on the phone to negotiate during one sit-in on campus, Khalil held up a megaphone to amplify her voice.

Khalil was briefly suspended from Columbia last spring for his role in the protests before the school reversed the decision. He has a diplomatic background and has worked at the British Embassy in Beirut, according to an online biography.

Over the past few days, critics of the protest movement at Columbia have singled out Khalil on social media. Shai Davidai, a vocal pro-Israel professor at Columbia who was barred from campus after the university said he intimidated and harassed employees, called on Rubio to deport Khalil.

Trump declines to rule out recession as tariffs begin to bite

President Donald Trump declined in an interview aired Sunday to rule out the possibility that his economic policies, including aggressive tariffs against America’s trade partners, would cause a recession.

In the interview with Maria Bartiromo, the host of “Sunday Morning Futures” on Fox News, Trump also said that he was considering increasing tariffs against Mexico and Canada.

The interview took place Thursday at the White House.

Referencing “rising worries about a slowdown” Bartiromo asked Trump: “Are you expecting a recession this year?”

“I hate to predict things like that,” Trump responded. “There is a period of transition, because what we’re doing is very big. We’re bringing wealth back to America. That’s a big thing, and there are always periods of, it takes a little time. It takes a little time, but I think it should be great for us.”

Trump’s imposition of tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China last week rocked stock markets and invited pushback from industries, including the largest automakers, who told the president that the duties would decimate their business. Canada immediately retaliated with tariffs on $20.5 billion worth of American exports and threatened additional measures. China has also placed tariffs on U.S. goods and plans to impose another round Monday.

On Thursday, Trump abruptly reversed his 25% tariffs on many Canadian and Mexican exports.

But the president is planning more tariffs soon — increasing the odds of an economically damaging global trade war. On Wednesday, his administration is set to put in place a 25% tariff on all foreign steel and aluminum, which he previewed last month. And the president has said to expect further levies on April 2, when he plans to impose what he is calling “reciprocal tariffs” to answer back to other countries’ tariffs and other trading practices.

Bartiromo told Trump that business leaders appreciate certainty: “The public companies want to make sure that we have clarity after April 2, when those reciprocal tariffs go in. Are you going to change anything after that? Will we have clarity?”

“We may go up with some tariffs. It de-

his tariffs, which he said would prevent the country from being “ripped off.” (Mark Abramson/The New York Times)

pends. We may go up. I don’t think we’ll go down, or we may go up,” Trump said. “They have plenty of clarity. They just use that. That’s almost a sound bite. They always say that we want clarity. Look, our country has been ripped off for many decades, for many, many decades, and we’re not going to be ripped off anymore.”

Economists have turned gloomier on the economic outlook amid Trump’s dizzying approach to tariffs, which has fueled considerable uncertainty and hamstrung businesses considering new investments and hiring. The concern is that the ongoing volatility chills this activity further, intensifying an economic slowdown that is already underway.

Heading into Trump’s second term in the White House, the economy had downshifted to a more modest pace of growth, the labor market had cooled and inflation, although still sticky, was well off its 2022 peak. The economic backdrop is still solid by many metrics, but policies like tariffs, deportations and steep government spending cuts that are central to Trump’s economic agenda are expected to test that resilience.

Tariffs, for example, are broadly expected to raise prices for everyday goods while also dampening growth as businesses and consumers are forced to redeploy resources and cut back on spending else-

where. Elevated inflation has limited to a degree how much the Federal Reserve may be able to support the economy if conditions deteriorate. For the time being, the central bank has opted to keep interest rates on hold at 4.25% to 4.5%.

Jerome Powell, the Federal Reserve chair, reiterated Friday that the Fed was not in a “hurry” to lower interest rates because the economy remained in good shape, but acknowledged the potentially disruptive nature of Trump’s plans, especially on inflation. Lackluster growth combined with ris-

ing prices has stoked fears of stagflation, a toxic combination that would put the Fed in an even more difficult position.

In an interview Friday, Austan Goolsbee, president of the Chicago Fed and a voting member on this year’s policy-setting committee, said that such a dynamic was increasingly “on the radar screen,” especially as he heard from companies in his district that they were grappling with an “uncertainty-induced chill.”

Speaking on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that tariffs would help “grow our economy in a way we’ve never grown before.”

Asked about forecasts from banks like JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, which say a recession in the next 12 months has become more likely, Lutnick said that Americans should not be bracing for a recession.

“I would never bet on recession,” he said. “No chance.”

Lutnick claimed that the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce government deficits would drive interest rates down, while drilling more oil would also bring down the price of energy. He acknowledged that tariffs could increase the price of foreign goods, but said that domestic goods would get cheaper.

Many economists have expressed other views, saying that tariffs on foreign products can help U.S. companies become more profitable by giving them space to raise their prices, as well.

“Foreign goods may get a little more expensive,” Lutnick said. “But American goods are going to get cheaper, and you’re going to be helping Americans by buying American.”

Wall Street selloff deepens as Trump sparks recession concerns

Major U.S. stock indexes sank on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump declined to predict whether his tariff policies could lead to a recession, roiling investor sentiment.

The Nasdaq Composite closed down more than 4% after confirming last week that its retreat from December’s record high was a correction. The S&P 500 slumped about 2.7%, down about 8.5% from its all-time high from February 19.

Below are investor and analyst comments about the selloff.

“They said there’s going to be a period of volatility, there’s going to be a rough patch here … the stock market is trying to digest that, and they’re discounting that out into the future with lower valuations.”

“Bessent has said he wanted the 10-year yield to come down … How do you control that? Well, you can take a hammer to the economy and certainly impact it. And they have, so far. Rates are down a lot, so they’re successful there. But it will cost, and the cost right now has been a trillion dollars out of crypto, or tons of money out of the stock market.”

“These are public markets; they can absolutely unravel and get out of control. So that’s what I think should ultimately be the primary concern ... what is the response going to be from the Fed? What is the response going to be from the administration?”

“The market is already starting to price in the slowdown at this point, but it’s too soon to tell. At this point the problem is the uncertainty, so we’ll see what happens.”

“People are expecting two to three rate cuts this year, but if you start to get some negative prints... you’ll probably

MOST ASSERTIVE STOCKS

get them more active and quicker. But that’ll be a good test where if you get a rate cut and you still are having a market under pressure. So we’ll see, but that’ll be the first wave.”

“Has the economy really fallen off a cliff in the last six weeks? No. And yet the perception is dramatically different today than it was at the end of last year.”

“If you engineer more downside risk to growth, you don’t actually have to do it, but you just engineer the risk, then you’re going to bring down your yields. That’s not a good way to do it, but that’s one way to do it.”

“This administration does not know how to define a

win. And because we’re market participants, we think the 10-year (Treasury) yield going down is going to be their win, but that’s nonsense. They don’t care about the 10-year yield. They don’t care about where the stock market is. Those are not their primary concerns. They are still trying to figure out how to define a win politically, economically, and what is the right timeframe. And until they do that, it’s going to be like this every week.”

“International investors are coming out of the U.S. markets and they’re going elsewhere. Today, it’s flying out of everything. You have people unwinding that carry trade.

Banker Mark Carney wins race to lead Liberal Party, and Canada

Amid a generational crisis in Canada’s relationship with the United States, the Liberal Party of Canada on Sunday chose an unelected technocrat with deep experience in financial markets to replace Justin Trudeau as party leader and the country’s prime minister, and to take on President Donald Trump.

Mark Carney, 59, who steered the Bank of Canada through the 2008 global financial crisis and the Bank of England through Brexit, but who has never been elected to office, won a party leadership race on Sunday against his friend and former finance minister, Chrystia Freeland.

Carney won a stunning 85.9% of the votes cast by Liberal Party members. More than 150,000 people voted, according to the party’s leaders.

“America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape or form,” Carney said in his acceptance speech on Sunday evening to an electric crowd of party faithful, directly addressing Trump’s constant threat that he wants to make Canada the 51st state. “We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.’’

“So Americans should make no mistake,’’ Carney added. “In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.”

The latest polling suggests that most respondents would choose Carney over Poilievre if he led the Liberal Party into the elections. Polling also shows that Canadians would prefer Carney to negotiate with Trump over Poilievre. Poilievre has suffered a serious setback in polls, as some voters see him as too close ideologically to Trump.

And on Sunday night, Carney quickly pivoted to federal election campaign rhetoric to attack Poilievre, casting him as devoid of real-world experience and too admiring of Trump to challenge him.

“Donald Trump thinks he can weaken us with his plan to divide and conquer. Pierre Poilievre’s plan will leave us divided and ready to be conquered,” he said. “Because a person who worships at the altar of Donald Trump will kneel before him, not stand up to him.”

He is expected to be sworn in as prime minister quickly, early this week, officially ending the Trudeau era. His first and most pressing challenge will be to manage the threat from Trump to Canada’s economy and sovereignty.

But, because Carney does not hold a seat in Parliament, he is expected to call federal elections soon after being sworn in as prime minister. In those elections, he will face off with Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party.

It’s a crucial moment to be taking the

wheel in Canada, a member of NATO and the Group of 7 industrialized nations and the world’s second-largest country by land mass.

Trump has put his thumb on Canadian politics, through his on-again-off-again pursuit of tariffs against Canadian goods, which threaten to cripple the economy, and his menacing comments about annexation.

Trudeau summarized the mood within his own party, and much of Canadian society, speaking at the Liberal Party convention to an adoring crowd in Ottawa, the capital, just before his successor was announced.

“This is a nation-defining moment. Democracy is not a given. Freedom is not a given,” Trudeau said. “Even Canada is not a given.”

Carney said he supported the retaliatory tariffs Canada has adopted. “My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect,” he said.

Canadian voters have suggested to opinion researchers that who might best stand up to Trump has been a key question guiding the choice of Carney and future decisions in the federal election.

Federal elections must be held by October in line with Canada’s rules. The Conservative Party, led by Poilievre, had long maintained a 20-plus point lead over the Liberals in polls, but the gap has been closing since Trudeau announced his resignation and Trump started making moves against Canada.

Carney’s experience in handling major crises as a technocrat could also give him an advantage over Poilievre in people’s perceptions. Poilievre, 45, has been a lifelong politician without much experience outside Canada’s parliamentary rough and tumble.

The Liberal Party establishment rallied around Carney’s campaign against Freeland, a former top lieutenant of Trudeau’s, whose resignation as finance minister in December triggered Trudeau’s own decision to step down.

And it has been clear that the Conservative Party also sees Carney as the bigger threat: It has been running negative ads against him, focusing on his personal wealth and investing decisions.

A key question will be whether Carney can sufficiently differentiate himself from Trudeau, whom he advised and was friendly with. Canadians say they want change after a decade of Trudeau, and the Conservative Party has been highlighting the personal and ideological links between the two men.

In his acceptance speech, Carney sought to brandish his Liberal credentials and convince people that, despite having made a fortune in finance, he is still a progressive, attuned to the party’s DNA.

“I know that markets don’t have values, people do,” he said. “When markets are governed well, they deliver great jobs and strong growth better than anything. But markets are also indifferent to human suffering and are blind to our greatest needs,” he added.

Trump looms over Greenland’s election, but voters have other concerns

The air inside the community hall in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, was thick with warmth, a welcome contrast to the icy streets outside. As voters brushed snow from their coats, candidates from most of Greenland’s major parties sat down in the front of the room, ready for questions.

Every seat was filled, two dozen international journalists lined the walls and a man in a black-and-gray sweater stepped forward to the mic.

“Why is running a small business still so difficult?” he asked, his voice steady but impatient.

Cameras clicked, and so did the strap-on spikes that several journalists wore on their boots to keep from slipping on the ice.

“You need to take those off,” the moderator said. “They’re ruining the floor.”

With some grumbles, the spikes came off.

On Tuesday, Greenlanders will cast their votes in what has to be the most closely watched election this island has ever held, as President Donald Trump asserts again and again that he wants the United States to take over Greenland. He has refused to rule out force, and in his recent speech to Congress, he made a direct plea to the Greenlanders themselves, promising, “We will make you rich.” All the attention he has paid has drawn a wave of journalists, diplomats, social media influencers and investors to the Arctic.

Greenland’s leading political parties are presenting different visions for the future, and some are pushing for a new relationship with the United States and quick independence from Denmark, which colonized Greenland hundreds of years ago and still controls some of its affairs.

might dominate headlines, but for the average voter, daily life matters more.”

Trump floated the idea of the United States buying Greenland from Denmark during his first term. After Denmark said no, the idea seemed to die.

But this time around, Trump seems determined to “get” Greenland, as he puts it. His refusal to rule out force has sent jitters across Europe, where relations with his administration are already hitting new lows over a number of issues, including tariffs and Trump’s stunning pivot toward Russia.

European diplomats and American investors have been streaming into snowbound Nuuk, drawn by the island’s resources and its strategic location. Greenland’s position along Arctic sea lanes, which are opening up as the planet warms, have attracted the attention of the United States, Russia, China and European powers. The island also possesses vast mineral deposits, although many are hard to access.

In contrast to those sweeping ambitions, people on the island say they’re worried about higher housing costs and economic uncertainty.

“This election is a test of where Greenlanders see their future — both in their everyday lives and on the global stage,” Leander Nielsen said. “The question is whether voters will prioritize immediate economic concerns or the bigger geopolitical picture. It’s a tough call.”

At the heart of the election is the question of control.

For more than 200 years, Greenland was ruled as a distant colony of Denmark, its Inuit population largely sidelined as Danish officials controlled its land and resources. Over time, pressure for self-rule grew, leading to greater autonomy and eventually a government of its own. Today, Greenland controls most domestic affairs, while Denmark still oversees defense, foreign policy and monetary matters.

Other parties, including the Demokraatit, are more cautious about sovereignty and relations with Washington.

“We must be smart and not push for independence at the expense of our people,” said Bo Martinsen, a Demokraatit candidate. “Right now, immediate independence is not feasible.”

Trump’s attention has intensified the conversation about independence and what Greenland should do if it breaks off from Denmark.

“The most important thing for me in this election is that there’s so much talk about independence, but I really want to know: How?” said Runa Sværd, a municipal planning chief in Nuuk. “I need a road map.”

On an island where harsh weather can shut down entire towns and 80% of the land mass is covered by a glacier ice cap, ensuring a smooth election isn’t so simple.

Ballots are flown by helicopter, ferried by boats through Arctic waters and sped to remote settlements by snowmobile. Once cast, each vote is counted by hand, with results relayed by email or, in the most isolated regions, by satellite phone. The results are expected to be announced late Tuesday, weather permitting.

“If a storm comes in and delays transport, we have to improvise,” said Klaus Georg Hansen, a former election official.

But storms aren’t the only threat. Danish intelligence officials have warned of foreign interference, with fake social media profiles posing as Greenlandic politicians and statements twisted to sow division.

With each passing day, the election buzz grows louder in Nuuk. As travelers drive away from the new international airport, two massive banners — one for Naleraq and the other for Inuit Ataqatigiit, the governing party — hang on opposite sides of a rock-cut mountainside.

But for many of Greenland’s 56,000 residents — a tiny population on the world’s biggest island — geopolitics is not a priority. At the recent town hall debate and in interviews with voters, Greenlanders expressed much more prosaic worries, often about living costs, unemployment, schools and health care.

“The election is shaped by what I would call a ‘crosspressure’ — two competing narratives pulling in different directions,” said Rasmus Leander Nielsen, a political scientist at Ilisimatusarfik University in Nuuk. “The geopolitical debates

But full independence remains a challenge. Denmark’s financial support covers more than half of Greenland’s budget, making economic stability a key hurdle to sovereignty.

The coming election will decide the makeup of the Inatsisartut, the island’s 31-seat parliament. Nearly all major parties agree that Greenland should become independent — it’s just a question of when and how. They also differ on what the island’s ultimate relationship should be with the United States and Denmark.

No major politicians have expressed a desire to become an American state, and polls show that 85% of Greenlanders don’t want that. But some candidates, including Kuno Fencker, a member of the Naleraq party, believe that Greenland should establish close ties with the United States.

He says Washington could best protect Greenland and such an alliance would deliver more investment and development. Fencker is part of a small pro-Trump camp in Greenland and went to Washington for Trump’s inauguration. He says the first step is breaking off from Denmark.

“It’s about us gaining full authority over our land,” he said. “From there, we will cooperate with international organizations and other countries.”

The United States has maintained a military presence on Greenland since World War II, with a small missile defense base at the top of the island.

“The U.S. is here to stay,” Fencker said. “They will always be part of the negotiating equation.”

Further along, campaign posters sway from lampposts. On Thursday, as John Nathansen, a 66-year-old pensioner, made his way to a supermarket, the election was on his mind.

“The conditions we live under don’t get enough attention. Instead, it’s all about that orange guy — Trump,” he said. “In my view, independence should be at the back of the line.”

America doesn’t need an official language

Iwas 3 years old the first time I mixed up Spanish and English. It would not be the last.

It was 1975, and my family had recently migrated from Peru to Northern California. Shortly after our arrival, according to Lozada lore, I asked my parents and older sisters, “¿Vamos a tener todo lo sinisario?,” meaning, “Will we have everything we need?”

Except I garbled the word “necesario,” coming up with the nonsense word “sinisario.” Everyone chuckled, so I tried to defend myself. “Es que yo no sé inglés,” I said. (“It’s that I don’t know English.”) That made everyone laugh harder, because, of course, my mistake had been in Spanish.

It was a preview of what the next five decades would bring, as the two languages jostled for primacy in my mind. Our moves back and forth between the United States and Peru during my childhood compelled me to latch on to whichever language I needed most at different times, even while striving to retain the other. Sometimes my English was stronger, sometimes my Spanish. No one had to tell me which language mattered when, or whether one or the other was “official.” Wherever I was, I knew.

In his March 1 executive order designating English as the official language of the United States, President Donald Trump asserts that a single shared language is “at the core of a unified, cohesive society,” that it serves to “streamline communication,” promote efficiency and “empower new citizens to achieve the American Dream.”

On these points, I have little disagreement. Just about every immigrant I’ve ever known in the United States — starting with my father — has sought to learn English for just those reasons. It was relatively easy for my sisters and me to pick it up as kids, and my mother had learned it well from the beloved American nuns who taught her in Peru. But my dad, coming to it later in life, always had to work at it.

And work he did. His errors of pronunciation never kept him from speaking English, even singing it, loudly and proudly. I cringed a bit at the time. Now I cringe at the memory of my cringing.

Had English suddenly become the official language of the United States via an executive order from President Gerald Ford, I can’t imagine that my father would have learned it any faster or that he would have felt more encouragement to do so. The need to work, to provide, was all the incentive he required. Even when he lived in Miami during the final years of his life, with Spanish-speakers all around him, he kept practicing his English. He intuitively grasped that it was part of his deal with America.

So, it’s not that I reject the arguments about efficiency and empowerment; I just question the need for a presidential order to enshrine them. I was tested on my English skills when I became a U.S. citizen a decade ago, but the market tells immigrants we must learn the language, more clearly than the government ever could.

Where Trump’s order moves from redundancy to confusion to cynicism is in its statement that a single official language will “cultivate a shared American culture” and “reinforce shared national values.”

After all, what is our shared culture if not the mix of cultures — including languages — that make and remake America every day? You may as well argue that a single cuisine or a single style of music or a single literary genre is more truly American than any other.

Thank God that my immigrant childhood means I can read Miguel de Cervantes and Mario Vargas Llosa in Spanish and William Shakespeare and Toni Morrison in English. If I can, why wouldn’t I? I grew up with two languages, and I regret not learning a third the way other people learn a second. Think how much richer the nation would be if we all knew more languages, not fewer, if we embraced a multiplicity of influences rather than shielding ourselves from them.

And what are our “shared national values,” if not those self-evident truths of the Declaration of Independence? Political equality, natural rights and popular sovereignty can be expressed, upheld and lived out in any language. Trust me that fluency in Spanish does not stall the pursuit of happiness. And it does not discourage any of us from learning English.

Worries over the corrosive influence of languages other than English have a long history in the United States. Reflecting on America’s openness to immigrants and the need for newcomers to assimilate, Theodore Roosevelt wrote that “we have room for but one language here and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans of American nationality and not as dwellers in a polyglot boardinghouse.”

Today, nearly 80% of people in the United States age 5 or older speak exclusively English at home, according to the latest American Community Survey. For the others who speak another

language at home, Spanish is the most common alternative, and more than 60% of those Spanish speakers also know English “very well,” the survey finds. Safe to say, we have yet to take up residence in Roosevelt’s boardinghouse.

In 2023, when JD Vance was serving in the Senate, he sponsored the English Language Unity Act. Yet even as he made his case for an official language, Vance unintentionally emphasized the bill’s superfluousness. Stating that English has been a “cornerstone” of American culture for more than 2 1/2 centuries, the future vice president said that “this common-sense legislation recognizes an inherent truth: English is the language of this country.”

If that is already the case — and has been for so long — why bother to propose legislation that mandates a preexisting reality? You may as well introduce a bill declaring water wet and the sun hot.

Under the executive order, federal agencies and recipients of federal funds are no longer required to offer translated documents and other help to people who do not speak English, but nor are they are prohibited from doing so. Yet the symbolism of the move matters enormously, aligning neatly with the administration’s campaign to slash immigration and to depict newcomers as dangerous and alienated and, as Trump has put it, a poison in the American bloodstream.

The order claims that it “celebrates the long tradition of multilingual American citizens who have learned English and passed it to their children.” But you’re not really celebrating multiculturalism if you’re trying to erode it. Being so protective of your culture suggests you’re insecure about its value.

The Trump administration is already trying to curtail what Americans can say; consider its executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America and its retaliation against The Associated Press for not following along. Now, with this new order, Trump seeks to shape not just what we say but also how we say it. (It’s no surprise that he highlighted those two initiatives, back to back, in his address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night.) A president who treats immigrants like second-class humans is creating second-class languages, too.

But language takes unexpected turns, and its meaning cannot be fixed by presidential diktat. Renaming the Gulf of Mexico seems like a simple-minded, jingoistic move, yet the new name may not always mean what Trump wants it to mean. “Gulf of America” takes on more encompassing connotations if by “America” one includes the northern, central and southern reaches of the continent. Who is to say that someday we won’t read it that way, in whatever language we choose, and that Trump’s executive order will have set us on that path?

El Golfo de las Américas would look just fine on a map.

Bruno Mars is pop’s most reliable male star. Who is he, really?

It’s a free-for-all on the Hot 100 chart right now. “Die With a Smile,” a slick, sappy Lady Gaga ballad destined for oldies radio rotation in about 20 years, has been hovering around No. 1 since summer. “Apt.,” a peppy new wave-inspired cut by Blackpink’s Rosé that speaks the rhythmic, hyperactive language of TikTok, is also in the Top 10. And a little further down, there’s Sexyy Red’s “Fat, Juicy and Wet,” the kind of raunchy, would-be strip club anthem that seems to float into the mainstream every few years. Nothing really links these songs — except for the fact that Bruno Mars appears on all three.

Mars checks many of the boxes of an A-list pop star. But unlike those who usually occupy the top slot of Spotify’s most-streamed artist ranking — which the 39-year-old musician has for the bulk of 2025 — it’s not always easy to discern his specific viewpoint, or even a favored niche. Pop has long rewarded shape-shifters like Madonna, whose careers are marked by bold artistic reconfigurations, but Mars is a different beast: a performer with such a malleable identity at one moment that his name stands for little except its association with hits.

Depending on your vintage, you might best remember Mars as a sappy adult contemporary crooner, thanks to his early No. 1s like “Grenade” and “Just the Way You Are.” On “Locked Out of Heaven,” certified diamond for 10 million sales, he was in full Sting drag, belting over shimmery

new wave. Silk Sonic, his collaboration with Anderson .Paak that yielded a 2021 album, reveled in a kind of throwback sleaze, perhaps in tribute to his semi-adoptive hometown, Las Vegas, where he has held down a residency at the Park MGM for an astonishing near-decade.

Rather than try to distill his essence into one sound, Mars has remained stubbornly chameleonic — though rooted in old-fashioned music-making, the kind that employs acoustic instruments and appeals to Grammy voters (he has 33 nominations and 16 wins). “Die With a Smile” hearkens back to his days as a Jason Mraz-esque wedding song maestro; despite its title, the song is pure soft-rock schmaltz, finding both singers indulging their worst impulses toward lounge act cosplay. “Apt.” taps into the new wave pep of his 2012 “Unorthodox Jukebox” album, this time cribbing familiar elements of hits by the Go-Go’s, Blondie and Bananarama.

Both songs came with their own distinct visual aesthetic — ’60s Americana, and a shambolic, pseudo-punk look — and were colossal hits on TikTok, radio and beyond. While “Apt.” was always intended for Rosé’s December 2024 debut album, “Rosie,” Gaga initially said that “Die With a Smile” was a one-off, and had nothing to do with her forthcoming album, “Mayhem.” Six months later, fans noticed the song had been tacked on at the end of the “Mayhem” track list; it’s hard to argue with some 2 billion extra streams.

In the streaming era, it is conventional wisdom that trying to appeal to every cons-

seamlessly onto each track. He throws a little Korean into his lyrics on “Apt.” and only raps on “Fat, Juicy & Wet,” in reverence of the song’s context. In cases like these, being a cipher is a feature, not a bug.

tituency at once is a failing game — just ask Katy Perry, whose broad-strokes pop began to flounder as soon as streaming began to supplant radio. And yet, a mere two months in, Mars could feasibly claim that 2025 is his biggest year ever, all while nurturing not two, but three distinct personas: Toward the end of January, “Fat, Juicy & Wet” arrived. Dialing up the knowing greasiness of his “24K Magic” era, the song exists on an entirely different plane from “Apt.” and “Die With a Smile,” likely intended for rap radio and party playlists. Like its predecessors, the track was an instant hit, debuting at No. 17. Mars, seemingly facing the option of either drilling into one niche or honing some kind of chimeric genre-mash, has chosen a third route: Play multiple games at once. Audience maxxing, of course, is nothing new. Shania Twain sold country, pop and Bollywood-inspired versions of her biggest records to capture audiences outside of America; early in her career, Beyoncé rerecorded songs like “Irreplaceable” in Spanish. As is so often the case, Drake adopted and then amplified this practice; his 2018 album “Scorpion” placed delicate synth-pop alongside New Orleans bounce and Memphis rap. Drake’s songs prized a distinct sense of personality above all else: Even when he crooned over an M83-type-beat on “Summer Games,” you never forgot that you were listening to a Drake record. Mars, on the other hand, is a willing participant in his own sublimation — his defining characteristic may be smoothness. He doesn’t have any notable lyrical hallmarks, and his voice slips

That all three songs are successful suggests that listeners are less wed to coherent “world-building” than one might think, willing to settle for a genre exercise delivered by a name-brand star — the equivalent of buying underwear, groceries and auto parts at Walmart. And it is listeners — the implication-laden term used by streaming services like Spotify — that Mars seems to be shooting for, not fans. A fandom is filled with die-hards, the kind of people who help Lana Del Rey sell out a stadium despite not having a radio or chart hit in many years; listeners are more passive consumers, the kind who wouldn’t necessarily care that Mars offers none of the parasocial emotional connection expected of stars in the 2020s. (He seemed to at least partially retreat after a 2010 arrest in Las Vegas; he pleaded guilty to cocaine possession, and the charges were later dismissed after he completed counseling and community service.)

In many ways, Mars was born for this. Growing up, he became known for his impersonations of Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson, and played in his family band, a pedigree you can hear clearly in his reverent stylistic tributes. His father is Puerto Rican and Jewish, while his mother is Filipino, and, perhaps as a result of growing up amid different cultures, he is pop’s premiere code-switcher, able to feasibly hop between the ’80s schlock of “Die With a Smile” and the playful hedonism of “Fat, Juicy & Wet” without raising too many eyebrows.

In that light, Mars is proposing a new mode of stardom, albeit one he himself is best positioned to pull off: the multiversal pop star, determined to be everything, to everyone, all at once.

American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars performs at Bowery Ballroom, New York, Aug. 25, 2010. Rather than try to distill his essence into one sound, Mars has remained stubbornly chameleonic — though rooted in old-fashioned music-making, the kind that employs acoustic instruments and appeals to Grammy voters (he has 33 nominations and 16 wins). SpaceX scrubs launch of 2 NASA satellite missions

Two NASA missions will have to wait longer for a launch aboard a single rocket. Both aim to unravel mysteries about the universe — one by peering far from Earth, the other by looking closer to home.

SpaceX on Saturday night announced on the social platform X about two hours before the scheduled launch time of 10:09 p.m. Eastern that it needed to continue checking the Falcon 9 rocket that was to lift the vehicles to orbit.

The company said it would announce the next launch attempt from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California when it was possible to do so.

The rocket’s chief passenger is SPHEREx, a space telescope that will take images of the entire sky in more than a 100 colors that are invisible to the human eye. Accompanying the telescope is a suite of satellites known collectively as PUNCH, which will study the sun’s outer atmosphere and solar wind.

What is SPHEREx?

SPHEREx is short for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer. The mouthful of a name is fitting for the vastness of its goal: to survey the entire sky in 102 colors, or wavelengths, of infrared light.

The space telescope, which looks like a giant megaphone, will record around 600 images each day, capturing light from millions of stars in our cosmic backyard and even more galaxies beyond it. Using a technique called spectroscopy, SPHEREx will separate the light into different wavelengths, like a glass prism splitting white light into a rainbow of colors. The color spectrum of an object in space reveals information about its chemical makeup and distance from Earth.

A photo provided by NASA/JPL-Caltech/BAE Systems shows a solar array deployment test on one of the PUNCH satellites at Astrotech Space Operations on Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, on Jan. 21, 2025. Two missions, SPHEREx and PUNCH, were expected to launch on a SpaceX rocket on Saturday, March 8, 2025, but were postponed. (NASA/JPL-Caltech/BAE Systems via The New York Times)

Scientists will use data from SPHEREx to study how the total light emitted by galaxies has changed through cosmic time and to chart where frozen water and other ingredients essential for life exist across the Milky Way. A three-dimensional map of the way galaxies are unevenly clumped across the universe today — some parts thick with galactic gas and dust, others more sparse — will also help researchers deduce the physics behind inflation, the rapid ballooning of the cosmos that occurred a split second after the Big Bang.

What is PUNCH?

Led by the Southwest Research Institute, PUNCH stands for Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere. The mission consists of four satellites, each around the size of a suitcase.

One satellite carries a coronagraph, which will take pictures of the sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere.

The other three are equipped with cameras to capture wider views of solar wind, the hot plasma spewing from the sun’s corona that washes over the solar system.

Each satellite has three polarizing filters, through which only waves of light aligned in a particular direction

can pass. That’s similar to the way polarized sunglasses block glare. By measuring polarized light, scientists can reconstruct the three-dimensional position, speed and direction of the solar wind as it streams away from the sun. These measurements will help solar physicists understand the boundary where the sun ends and the solar wind begins. The satellites will also observe coronal mass ejections, violent blasts of solar material, as they evolve on their way to Earth. This data will help forecasters better predict the potential effects of space weather, from power outages to glittering northern lights.

Where are SPHEREx and PUNCH going?

Both missions will orbit about 400 miles above Earth’s terminator, the line separating day and night on our planet, circling over the north and south poles. This type of orbit is known as sun-synchronous because it keeps the spacecraft oriented in the same position relative to our sun.

That’s advantageous for PUNCH, as it allows the constellation of satellites to keep a clear view around the sun at any point along its orbit. It also allows SPHEREx to stay pointed away from the sun, avoiding infrared light from our home star that could mask fainter signals from faraway stars and galaxies.

As Shohei Ohtani embarks on Year 2 in Dodger blue, a unique encore begins

Planning for the extraordinary takes a special kind of audacity. Nobody points to center field and clears the wall with the next swing. One guy might have done it, but that was Babe Ruth, and nobody is really sure about that, anyway.

Then came Shohei Ohtani.

Ohtani, the walking miracle of the Los Angeles Dodgers, will resume his two-way Ruthian feats this season. His right elbow is healthy enough for pitching, and his left shoulder looks a whole lot sturdier than it did in the Bronx last October.

In his first at-bat this spring training, on Feb. 28 against the Los Angeles Angels, Ohtani launched a homer into the leftfield bullpen at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona.

“Regardless of the results, I think the biggest takeaway was being able to go through my three at-bats without any issues,” Ohtani said through his interpreter, Will Ireton. “Physically, felt really good.”

Ohtani did not call his shot, but his latest MVP effort seemed to be planned from the start. Knowing he could not pitch last season after elbow surgery in September 2023, Ohtani decided to explore new territory for offense-only brilliance.

So he created the 50/50 club, population: 1. Fifty-four home runs. Fifty-nine stolen bases. League leader in runs scored, runs batted in, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and total bases. It was a season to savor — and the fun has started again.

“Obviously he’s fine, after that home run he hit,” the Angels’ Yusei Kikuchi said. “He had the ability to hit it that far. I’m sure he’s going to be able to put up the same numbers this year.”

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts isn’t so sure, and that’s important to remember as Ohtani embarks on Year 2 in blue. What can he do for an encore? Not what he did last season. Once he returns to game action on the mound, likely in May, Ohtani simply will not have the chance to match the mindbending numbers of 2024.

Ohtani achieved last season’s masterpiece in 731 plate

appearances. Only three players have topped that total in the Dodgers’ 141-year history: Pee Wee Reese in 1949, Maury Willis in 1962 and Rafael Furcal in 2006. And none of them added 76 more plate appearances in the postseason, as Ohtani did.

It won’t happen again. It can’t. Science may not confirm this, but Ohtani is a human being. And when humans pitch every five or six days, it’s wise not to let them hit 800 times from March until November.

“I think he can be as productive,” Roberts said. “I don’t think he’s going to get the same number of at-bats, plate appearances, given that he’s going to be pitching. I don’t think he’s going to steal as many bases, just appreciating the fact that he does need to pitch and saving his legs. But as far as kind of performance per plate appearance, I still think he can be just as productive. And I’m sure Shohei is expecting the same thing.”

For now, Ohtani is mostly concerned about his left shoulder, which he jammed into the dirt on a stolen base attempt in Game 2 of the World Series. He willed his way through the next three games in New York (1-for-11 with a single) and underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum on Nov. 5.

If you notice Ohtani making subtle shoulder movements between pitches or at-bats, it’s probably no cause for alarm.

“It’s no discomfort, it’s more just checking to make sure it’s OK,” Ohtani said. “My last at-bat, the last swing, I was pretty late and my shoulder felt great, too. So that was a good test.”

Ohtani has won two Most Valuable Player Awards as a two-way player, for the Angels in 2021 and 2023. The latter season ended early when his right elbow gave out, requiring his second major reconstructive surgery in six years. But 2021 could be an instructive example of how he will be used this season.

In 2021, Ohtani made 23 starts and played 155 games overall, which worked out to 639 plate appearances. So that could mean about 100 fewer at bats for Ohtani.

“The only thing we have to go on is when he was with the Angels and kind of doing the two-way thing with them,” Roberts said, though he conceded he had “no idea” how many plate appearances Ohtani will make. Ohtani was usually the No. 2 hitter in the Angels’ order; he started 90 games as the Dodgers’ leadoff hitter last season.

Likewise, none of us has any clue about the Dodgers’ fate this season. By winning the World Series and pushing their payroll near $400 million, they have upended their image. Once a team that regularly disappointed in October, the Dodgers now seem unbeatable, all but certain to become baseball’s first repeat champion in a quarter-century.

“Once he returns to game action on the mound, likely in May, [Shohei] Ohtani simply will not have the chance to match the mind-bending numbers of 2024,” Tyler Kepner writes. (Wikipedia via Joe Glorioso/All-Pro Reels for Washington Times Sports)

If you think that, though, you’re not really paying attention. In baseball, if you’re forced to choose between one superteam or any of the other 29 teams to win the World Series, always, always take the field.

In a league without a salary cap, the sheer unpredictability of baseball saves it from being a flag-raising contest among the very rich.

“That is the thing about our sport,” said Stan Kasten, the Dodgers’ president and a former top executive with Atlanta’s NBA and NHL teams. “With everything that we’ve done, no one thinks we have more than, what, a 25% chance to win the World Series? That means it’s a 75% chance that we won’t.”

Nobody disputes the Dodgers’ advantages. But they don’t have to spend or emphasize player development the way they do. That’s a choice we should celebrate.

Signing Ohtani to his heavily deferred contract, and then adding almost $1 billion in new commitments since then, only seems like overkill. For the Dodgers, it’s just common sense.

“If you know baseball, you’re not going to complain, because what the Dodgers are doing is trying to put the best team on the field,” outfielder Teoscar Hernández said. “If they have the power to do that, why not do it?”
