Pan Am community meeting set for Scarborough insidetoronto.com

Information sessions for residents and local business people to learn how they may be affected by the Pan Am

and Parapan Am Games this summer is set for Scarborough on April 7. The University of Toronto

Scarborough campus is hosting Games events. The meeting is at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, 875

Morningside Ave. There will be a business session from 3 to 5 p.m. and a residents’ session from 6 to 8 p.m.

The provincial fire marshal’s office continues to probe the cause of a weekend blaze in Scarborough that took the life of a 10-year-old boy and injured his parents and three younger siblings. The boy has been identified as Mark Mrochuk Jr., who was reportedly battling a brain tumour for the past year. Fire crews were called to a Toronto Community Housing MARK townhouse MROCHUK JR. at 4311 Kingston Rd. (near Galloway Road) at 5:50 a.m. Saturday. “There were flames showing when we arrived,” said Capt. Stephan Powell, adding the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen and “did spread into the dining room and started up the stairs to the third floor.” Powell said firefighters rescued a woman and her four children, ages 5 to 10, from the third floor of the burning >>>TRUST, page 11

Mother of missing woman prays for daughter Amina Lawal, 19, has been missing since March 20 ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

Family and friends are trying to make sense of the sudden disappearance of a young Scarborough woman. Amina Lawal told her family she was going to a meeting at school around 2 p.m. on March 20, her 19th birthday. She was seen leaving her home, near Kingston Road and Beechgrove Drive. That evening, the first-year York University student called

her mother Funmi Odusola to say she was on her way home. “And that was the last time I heard from her,” said Odusola, noting she reported her daughter missing the next day. York U student When asked what she thinks happened, Odusola said “honestly, I don’t know. One thing I know for sure, she would never leave voluntarily. ... I think maybe

somebody kidnapped her. I’m Just praying every day that she’s alive.” Lawal is black, 5’2” tall, 100 pounds with long black braided hair and a thin build. She used public transit and attended the Schulich School of Business at York. “She’s a very good girl,” Odusola said. “She’s an A student, she volunteers, she’s very athletic, she loves music and she likes to help.” Police say Lawal has never

Countdown to Pan Am Games Y

esterday marked the start of the 100-day countdown to this summer’s Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. Part of the celebrations held to mark the occasion at the Athletes’ Village in the West Don Lands included a citizenship court for 100 new Canadians, including North York boxer Arthur Biyarslanov who will be taking part in the Games. The past month has seen enthusiasm for the Games begin to build across not only the Greater Toronto Area, but the province and country as well. The March announcement of the Pan Am Games Torch Relay, which starts May 30, will see the Games’ torch visit communities across Canada before settling in to tour Toronto’s neighbourhoods just prior to the opening of the Games on July 10. A number of high-profile athletic events in the city are also helping raise excitement. The Swim Canada trials to select the members of the Canadian our view team that will take part in the Pan Am Games are taking place Approach at Scarborough’s CIBC Pan Am/ Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and generates Field House through Saturday. excitement This meet will feature Canada’s top swimmers. Last week, the Scarborough pool hosted the Can-Am ParaSwimming Championships, which helped select the members of the Canadian team to take part in August’s Parapan Am Games. Both these events are examples of the many legacies the Games will leave Toronto. As well last week, residents could take in some of the world’s top wheelchair basketball teams at the Americas Challenge at the Mattamy Centre. That tourney saw the Canadian men’s team, the defending Olympic gold medal champs, in action at the court they will compete on in the Parapan Am Games. The Mattamy Centre will also host the Pan Am Games basketball, which should see a very strong Canadian men’s team including some top young NBA players from our country. There’s lots to get excited about as the Games approach. We at Metroland Media Toronto are looking forward to all of the events planned and will have extensive coverage of the Torch Relay, the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, and everything leading up to them. An update on what kids are thinking today It seems like everybody at work has young kids. It’s always a lot fun when they bring them to the office and I get a kick out of listening to parents talk about them, too. Little ones have been the topic du jour around here since March Break, so I thought I’d provide an update on how they’re doing. What they think is their official bedtime: They’re not quite sure. When they think their bedtime should be: That they are sure about. They’d like it to be later. Much later. And that it should be mandatory to have one big book and two little books read to them before they hit the sack. How would you describe kids’ attention spans: Same as adults. They’re long if they’re interested in what they’re doing. If they aren’t interested in what they are doing, their atten-

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY tion spans are short. Is it possible to outsmart kids: Yes, but it takes a little ingenuity. Is it possible to get them dressed in less than a couple of hours: Also, yes, but it takes an awful lot of ingenuity. On saying please and thank you: They have to be reminded to do that. Constantly. Just like adults. Why kids need to go to the bathroom right after you leave home, yet when you asked them a zillion times before you left, they insisted they didn’t have to go: They say they don’t know – and I believe them. Why a toy they had no

interest in a few minutes earlier they suddenly want to play with the moment they see their brother or sister playing with it: They say they don’t know – but that I don’t believe. What about humour: They love to laugh. Their reaction to seeing another kid crying: It makes them want to comfort them. What happens when they hear somebody in the room pass gas: It makes them giggle. Just like adults. What they think about cellphones and tablets, Part I: They get antsy watching mommy or maddy yakking or texting on devices instead of paying attention to them. What they think about cellphones and tablets, Part II: They want to know when

you’re going to buy a cellphone and tablet for them. Getting their choice of ice cream or candy or chocolate chip cookies: Yummy, yum, yum. Being told that they’d have to eat all of their vegetables first: Figures. We knew there had to be a catch. Why they say they have a tummy ache: It’s not from inhaling too much ice cream, candy and chocolate chip cookies. Or being forced to eat all their vegetables first. The tummy’s not actually upset, in fact. It’s just a euphemism for feeling left out or feeling ignored or feeling sad. You know, the same reason adults say they have a tummy ache. Students at St. Agatha Catholic School, in Scarborough, show their appreciation after winning a $25,000 prize from Staples in the Superpower Your School contest, which recognized the work of enviromentally conscious schools across the country. St. Agatha was honoured for projects including its Stewards of the Earth program.

A

school in Cliffcrest is pioneering the way kids learn to care for the planet and care for each other. St. Agatha Catholic School was recognized by Staples Canada’s Superpower Your School Contest for its tireless efforts to promote environmental sustainability, conservation and biodiversity and educate its students about the importance of the environment and the planet. On Tuesday morning, students were awarded $25,000 worth of new technology in a surprise school assembly. Needless to say, students and teachers were overjoyed and uplifted to replace their 41 obsolete laptops with brand new equipment for the school’s 475

kids. St. Agatha is one of 10 schools across the country that are being recognized by Staples, selected from 600 schools nationwide. Environmentally conscious The contest, now in its fifth year, was held from Jan. 5 to 31. Staples Canada has awarded the prize to 40 environmentally conscious schools since it the contest began. But exactly what environmental initiatives earned St. Agatha the $25,000 award? Anne Marie McCowan, teacher and organizer of many of the school’s initiatives, said the many projects undertaken by students weren’t to earn a prize, but to protect the Earth. “We’re supposed to do things we want to, because it’s part of God’s will,” she said.

“We were determined in trying to see if we can make a difference and we’ve been doing this now for eight years.” McCowan heads a school committee called “Stewards of the Earth.” From contributions of teachers, parents and a team of 35 students, the committee has organized several projects. Green fair One of those projects – the Scarborough Green Fair – had its fourth annual event on March 28. Community residents enjoyed more than 50 green exhibits, eco-activities and a celebration of biodiversity in Scarborough. The fair is a partnership with the Toronto Community Garden Network and Seeds of Diversity. But it’s just a small part of the many projects undertaken by the

school. “We’ve been planting trees with the school,” McCowan said. “We tried to get the kids to understand that food doesn’t come out of a bag. All of this is tied into the curriculum.” Reycling Clothing drives, recycling programs, litterless lunches and nature walks are some of the endless list of environmental initiatives St. Agatha conducts with its students. The result is students are now equipped with the knowledge of many important sustainability issues, such as the decline of Monarch butterflies, the Great Pacific garbage patch and the importance of water conservation given that just one per cent of Earth’s total water is potable.

“We need to change our lifestyle,” McCowan said. “Today, it’s all about ‘I want more’, but we should only take what we need.” Parents are very supportive of the school’s strong emphasis on the environment. One parent involved in the committee, Liza Tilander, has spearheaded several recycling programs. “A lot of adults don’t have time anymore,” she said. “As a parent, I want to show my children that we need to take time out and take step back to care for the Earth and care for each other.” “We’re borrowing the planet from future children, so we need to keep it healthy and safe,” she added.

OPEN MONDAY TO THURSDAY 9AM-9PM, FRIDAY & SATURDAY 9AM-6PM

Tory’s fortune lies in the hands of city’s provincial, federal cousins It may well be that when all the accounts are in, the success or failure of Mayor John Tory’s debut term as mayor will be decided by factors entirely beyond his control. To a degree this is so with most political leaders. A moribund federal government can be buoyed by a robust economy; a competent provincial government, sunk by a collapse in the markets. And a mayor, particularly in a city like Toronto, succeeds or fails based on the actions of both of those levels of government. If goodwill flows from above, it will rise from the electorate. Of course, a smart mayor can make lemonade with a stack of lemons from unfriendly governments. But Tory has, through both the city’s circumstance and his own declarations, tied his own hands. Firstly, Toronto has great and immediate need for moneys beyond its means. The Spadina subway extension

david nickle the city is in need of $150 million more in order to be finished, and neither the province nor the federal government has shown willingness to assist. On Monday, Tory affirmed his election promise to deal with the repair backlog at Toronto Community Housing – spending $864 million over the next decade to fix the housing stock, and asking other levels of government to help. And that’s just this week. Toronto will need billions of dollars from the provincial and federal governments if it is to move ahead with Tory’s SmartTrack plan. Toronto really did need some $86 million this year, to balance its budget, and didn’t get it. Tory is putting everything – literally everything – on his ability to work with Liberals provincially, and nominally Conservatives federally, and do

so well enough to cause them to let these billions flow. Tory believes it’s a good bet. Since before he even joined the race for mayor, his biggest selling point has been his ability to sell the city to a blue-chip Rolodex of government and business contacts. But if in a year or so nobody’s buying, Tory may have to do things that violate his other electionyear brand: that of a fiscally conservative business leader unwilling to burden taxpayers with more taxes and fees. If he does those things he might be able to fulfill at least a portion of his agenda. But for people who voted for Tory in 2014, will the shift be acceptable enough to csupport him for a second term? Tory needs the federal and provincial governments to listen. His fate is in their hands.

Terry Fox speaks at the Scarborough Civic Centre during his visit in the summer of 1980 as part of the Marathon of Hope.

Scarborough MPP’s Terry Fox Day proposal given unanimous support MPPs at Queen’s Park voted unanimously in favour of the second reading of the Terry Fox Day Act, a bill that would honour national icon Terry Fox on the second Sunday after Labour Day. What started as a Private Members Bill from Scarborough-Agincourt MPP Soo Wong has now received overwhelming support from MPPs, long-time volunteers and organizers of the Terry Fox Run and schools, including Scarborough’s Terry Fox Public School. Fox’s Marathon of Hope began in Aprll of 1980 in Newfoundland. A diagnosis of osteosarcoma prompted Fox to run across the country to raise money for cancer research. The Marathon of Hope

lasted 143 days and 5,373 kilometres, and ended on Sept. 1, 1980 when Fox had to stop running because cancer had spread to his lungs. The annual fundraising runs in Canada started in September of 1981 as a response to Fox’s death in June of that year. Community runs in Fox’s memory and honour have continued every year since. Today, the Terry Fox Run is a point of national pride in Canada and enters its 35th year this September, when it’s traditionally held on the second Sunday of September after Labour Day. In more than three decades, the run has raised more than $650 million worldwide for a cure for cancer. Wong wants to bring the

act – Bill 61 – back for a third reading as soon as possible so that the holiday can be celebrated this fall. “Proclaiming the second Sunday after Labour Day as Terry Fox Day in Ontario not only contributes to the preservation of Terry’s dream to find a cure for cancer, but will serve as a yearly reminder that we must continue to spread his message of courage, hope and determination,” Wong said in a statement. The bill has been referred to the provincial government’s Standing Committee on Regulations and Private Bills for review before it moves to a third reading.

gives subway closures a rest wTTC Fans of weekend-spanning subway closures will be dismayed to learn the TTC isn’t planning any more for its signal upgrade construction. The rest of us, however, can look forward to the end of multi-day construction delays needed for converting Line 1’s antiquated signal system. In fact, the TTC thinks it can reduce the required closures for the upgrades by half thanks to a “revised strategy” that, according to TTC spokesperson Mike Palmer, entails shifting contracts and work related to the $559-million infrastructure project. It will be four years – at least – before the work is complete. WE’RE NUMBER TWO – in congestion Toronto is ranked the second-worst city in the country when it comes to traffic congestion, according to rankings released this week by the GPS manufacturer TomTom. The study, which comes from “historical” GPS data

w

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT found in the company’s traffic database, finds only Vancouver has more congestion than Toronto among the study’s ranking of worst Canadian cities for traffic. The 2014 data shows Toronto’s congestion rate increased slightly from 2013 and the average car commuter here spends at least 84 hours per year delayed in traffic – five hours above the national average. Istanbul, Turkey was ranked the worst city in the world for traffic. In comparison Toronto ranked 47th globally. PACHI takes a RIDE on THE TTC A certain rainbow-coloured porcupine took to the TTC last weekend to drum up attention for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Pachi the official Games mascot took an impromptu ride from Spadina to Union Station on one of the TTC’s new streetcars Sunday. He

w

was joined by several athletes who will be representing Canada. Officials have promised expanded public transit options during the Games, which kick off July 10. CAPTURE IMAGE OF COMMUTERS wARTISTS

The next time you’re in the subway system, you may be a muse to an artist’s creation. Ten artists did just that at selected stations, sketching commuters as they waited for their ride, or sat on the train. Now, the output of that exercise is on public display as part of Sketching the Line, a showcase organized by Art in Transit. You can view around 60 of the sketches until the end of April while they screen on the Pattison OneStop video screens, found on most subway platforms. To r o n t o Co m m u n i t y Housing said the townhouse had working smoke detectors. Safety systems “All life safety systems at Toronto Community Housing homes are inspected regularly, and the system in this home

was fully functional at the last inspection in December 2014,” TCH said in a news release. Powell said firefighters did hear a smoke alarm ringing. “We have to find out if all the smoke alarms were working,” he said. “It’s tragic, and the only thing I could say to people

is protect your loved ones: talk to them about escape plans, talk to them about smoke alarms, get somebody to check them once a month. It’s critical that we check our smoke alarms and have an escape plan.” There were 80 firefighters at the scene of the two-alarm blaze.

City to receive $223M for homelessness prevention The City of Toronto is receiving $223 million over two years from the province to help curb homelessness, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing announced Monday. The funding comes as part of Ontario’s $587-million funding strategy to help end homelessness across the province. The Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative will partner with municipalities to prevent and address homelessness. “We’re building on the success of the Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative, which has helped thousands of families and individuals dealing with homelessness gain and retain secure accommodation,” said Ted McMeekin, minister of municipal affairs and housing, in a news release. “This initiative gives communities

Help decide the future of the Gardiner Expressway East We invite you to join us at two upcoming public meetings where you can comment on the current phase of the Environmental Assessment on the future of the Gardiner Expressway East. The Study Waterfront Toronto and the City of Toronto are jointly carrying out the Gardiner Expressway / Lake Shore Boulevard Reconfiguration Environmental Assessment (EA) and Integrated Urban Design Study. The EA will determine the future of the Gardiner Expressway East and Lake Shore Boulevard East, from approximately Jarvis Street to approximately Leslie Street. The study area for the EA is displayed on the map below. The four alternative solutions that have been considered to date are: • Maintain the elevated expressway; • Improve the urban fabric while maintaining the existing expressway;

• Replace with a new above-or-below grade expressway; and, • Remove the elevated expressway and build a new boulevard.

In the last phase of the EA, the evaluation of the alternative solutions concluded that the remove option best met the evaluation criteria. Following direction from the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee of Toronto City Council, the upcoming public meeting will share the results of the following work: 1.

Review the remove option under the EA process to mitigate concerns about traffic congestion.

2.

Prepare an additional hybrid option that combines the maintain and replace components to preserve expressway linkage and functionality between the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway, and evaluates it against the EA criteria and the following: • Transportation functionality; • Public transit components; •

Impacts on key economic sectors;

Environmental impact; and

Cost benefit;

Neighbourhood growth and compatibility

Future land use considerations;

Get Involved Interested persons are invited to participate through two upcoming public meetings, one of which will be webcast, and online opportunities. If you can’t attend in person, you can participate and watch the meeting online – and at any time afterwards – at www.gardinereast.ca.

Library adds Aga Khan Museum to pass program Toronto Public Library card holders now have the opportunity to visit the Aga Khan Museum for free. That’s because the North York museum has been added to the library’s Sun Life Financial Museum + Arts Pass (MAP) program, giving residents a chance to check out the venue for free. “We see the MAP pass as an excellent way not only to introduce the museum to library patrons, but to also encourage them to develop an ongoing relationship with this museum,

its park and everything else it has to offer,” said Aga Khan Museum director Henry Kim at an event announcing the addition of the museum to the MAP program Tuesday. The Aga Khan Museum is now one of 18 museums and cultural attractions across the city that are part of the MAP program. Aga Khan Museum MAP passes are available at 50 branches across the city. Five passes per week are available at each participating branch. The pass grants free access to the

museum to a family of up to two adults and three children. Regular admission costs $20 per adult, or $15 per student, child or senior. “We are of course thrilled with our new partnership,” said city librarian Vickery Bowles at the event, held at the Aga Khan Museum, 77 Wynford Dr. For a full list of MAP attractions and which branches carry passes, visit www. tpl.ca/mappass

Scarborough’s Kyle Baun inks deal with Chicago Blackhawks As it turns out, Scarborough native Kyle Baun’s hockey season didn’t end with his Colgate University Raiders losing 4-2 to Harvard in the ECAC (Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference) championship game late last month. Last Thursday, the Chicago Blackhawks signed him to a two-year free agent contract. Although he attended high school at St. Michael’s College in midtown Toronto, Baun’s family lives in the Markham and Kingston Road area of Scarborough (he went to Scarborough’s Elizabeth Simcoe Junior Public School). He got his start in hockey with the West Hill house league program, quickly Kyle Baun moving up to the rep level where he played for the Toronto Aces AA and Toronto Titans AAA (the old Wexford Raiders team). A grandson of Toronto Maple Leafs veteran legend Bobby Baun, Kyle is giving up his fourth year of U.S.

college eligibility in order to turn pro. Over the past three years, the power forward appeared in 113 games, amassing 39 goals and 40 assists for 79 points. He increased his offensive output in each of those three seasons, culminating in a career-high 29 points this season.

In an interview on his team’s website, Baun termed it a “bittersweet” time as he says goodbye to his old teammates to embark upon a professional career. He didn’t crack the Blackhawks line-up in his first three games with the club, but then again, with the playoffs fast approach-

Scarborough’s Natalie Spooner has the ‘A’ on in this 4 Nations Cup tournament game from earlier this season and she’s also wearing it at the world championships now under way in Sweden.

Spooner’s three-point game helps propel Canada into semis

Wearing the ‘A’, as assistant captain, Scarborough’s Natalie Spooner helped vault Canada into the semifinals at the women’s world hockey championships in Sweden. The 24-year-old Cedarbrae Collegiate grad contributed two goals and an assist to help Canada to a 6-2 win over Finland on Wednesday to close out the preliminary round with a 2-1 record. Both the U.S. and Canada are hoping to meet up in Sunday’s final if they can stave off an upset in Friday’s semifinal round against teams yet to be determined. The two powerhouses met up in the preliminary round with the U.S. winning 4-2 to finish the preliminary round a perfect 3-0.
