He and his volunteer groups were receiving 50 offers of donated instruments a day, but with no place to put them. Enter Jeff Long. The co-founder of music retail chain Long & McQuade, Long became aware of an urgent request from Lowther requesting the company’s help in storing the donated guitars. He readily agreed, easing the way for every Long & McQuade location to act as a drop-off site for guitars donated to the program. Long said getting involved was a no-brainer for the company which had in the past donated instruments to Guitars for Vets. "It was just a logical extension of our charitable outreach," said Long. He estimated store locations across Canada have accepted some 500 guitars on behalf of the program. Since Guitars for Vets was established in 2015, over 800 instruments have been donated or purchased for the program. Musical instructors donate their time to provide lessons, and prominent Canadian musicians will participate in an upcoming benefit concert in Ottawa to raise money to buy 700 guitars for the program. A classic rock ’n roll fan, Lowther prefers playing Beatles songs for their beauty as well as their maddening complexity. He has a songbook of all of the band’s work which he loves and hates to play from "because they literally make up their own chords". He said the guitar is like his personal umbrella, for use when storm clouds gather. "Does the (trauma) completely go away? No, I still struggle," he said. "When the bad times come I just wait it out with my guitar and play some insanely hard song. "At that point there’s nothing better to do than focusing on figuring out those damn chords."

im Lowther couldn’t figure out what was happening to him. Five years after medical discharge from a distinguished military career, Lowther, founder of Guitars for Vets, felt like he was going out of his mind. After 15 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, being deployed to Bosnia and Afghanistan, it was difficult to watch a war movie without feeling the urge to run out of the theatre. He had nightmares from his time in uniform so vivid they would "scare the bejesus" out of wife Debbie. And then there were the flashbacks, triggered by something as small as a scent. It was like seeing snapshots of his past life in 3D, everything supercharged. Lowther receded into the family basement, keeping away from public places. Debbie would notice that all too frequent "deadstare" indicating he was in the throes of a flashback and snap her fingers to bring him back to reality. Lowther was diagnosed with PTSD and prescribed antidepressant medication. He took up yoga, read book after book on neurology in an effort to understand and treat his condition. Nothing seemed to help. After a typically gloomy day, Lowther again retreated to the basement. On a whim, he picked up his old guitar. Lowther, who had often played, had let it lapse after returning home. "I picked it up and started banging on it and I remembered what I forgot," said Lowther during an interview Thursday, Oct. 26. "15 minutes went by and I noticed I felt better." Eventually Lowther emerged from his self-imposed exile, relying on the guitar to get through the bad times. "Something as simple as play-

Music therapy program helps veterans dealing with trauma ing takes my mind in a different direction," he said. "There’s no room in my brain for (trauma) if I’m touching or strumming (the guitar). Something’s happening and it’s magical." Such an experience is common for people dealing with severe trauma, says clinician Reba Fleury. A counsellor and liaison with veterans and families dealing with PTSD at the Military Family Resource Centre in North York, Fleury said cognitive behavioural therapy such as using music or other expressive arts have proven
effective for treatment of the illness. The centre hosts regular events for military families, including a guitar jam night which allows injured veterans and their loved ones to play and socialize. "It’s important to show these families they’re not alone," said Fleury. In 2011, Lowther and his wife founded Veterans Emergency Transition Services (VETS) Canada in their native Halifax, an outreach group advocating and providing shelter for homeless vets.
Sensing an opportunity to do more, particularly with a rash of suicides among male military members- as many as 68 between 2010 and 2014 - he recalled his own experience with music. Guitars for Vets was established in 2015 as a donation program for wounded veterans, where people with unneeded instruments could drop them off for use in music therapy. But the program proved too successful. "We thought we’d get maybe one or two guitars, but it just exploded across the country," said Lowther.

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Toronto city council is making a fresh push to build the Bridletowne Community Hub, with a new leasing agreement it hopes its partners can stick to. In 2011, council approved a 100,000-square-foot facility for the Agincourt neighbourhood, which uniquely combined a dialysis centre for what is now the Scarborough and Rouge Hospital (SRH), plus a YMCA and space for community agencies. The city paid $6 million for half the former Timothy Eaton Business and Technical Institute property in 2012, but YMCA of Greater Toronto failed to raise the $29 million it needed. Council in 2016 set a deadline of June 30, 2017 for the city’s partners, but the YMCA didn’t meet it. In six years, the organization raised only $1.5 million, a report to council’s executive committee said last month. The community hub proposed was revised and expanded to an $85.4-million structure of
146,200 square feet, with SRH now taking a lead role in developing the health-care space and spending more for construction, giving YMCA more time to raise money. The hospital will get a 40-year ground lease, and the YMCA a four-year lease until the organization meets obligations which include raising $22.5 million. United Way of Toronto and York Region will contribute $3 million and the city’s Children’s Services, which plans to open a 62-space daycare on the site, will spend up to $3.9 million. City council approved the new arrangement on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Space for health services is estimated at $44.4 million. In August, Ontario Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins announced provincial support for the hub, though he declined to name a figure. Hoskins said the hub will have 45 dialysis stations, including 19 new ones, and nine hemodialysis stations to train patients who want dialysis at

said in an interview, calling the agreement the product of many meetings between the partners and community members who backed the project from the beginning. Kelly said the YMCA appears
to be comfortable with the new terms, but said he thought the organization is "counting on federal involvement" to assist in its contribution. "I will do everything I can to make sure the federal government is an active participant," Kelly said. "Even if the shovel doesn’t go into the ground in ’18, there’s no doubt in my mind that this is a go-forward project." Nora Gorman, the YMCA’s vice president of marketing and communication, said the charity remains committed to the hub and the new arrangement "represents an important and hopeful step." YMCA is grateful to councillors and Mayor John Tory for continuing to support the project, Gorman added last week. Local MP Arnold Chan, who died in April, had tried to get the hub federal funding. Announcing she was seeking the riding’s Liberal nomination for a byelection coming next month, Chan’s widow Jean Yip said she would continue the effort as Scarborough-Agincourt MP.

Canada’s soldiers continue to pay the price Jeff Sandney, a master warrant officer who works at Denison Armoury in Downsview, calms his dog down when the garbage truck rumbles by. As he relates in a story by one of our reporters, the golden retriever more than returns the favour: calming Sandney down when he is stricken with anxiety. Now 52, Sandney joined the Canadian Armed Forces at 17, and served in Bosnia, Cyprus, Egypt and the Golan Heights. In Sarajevo, Bosnia he recalled "seeing people shot all the time". "Now I get high anxiety out of the blue. You just start sweating, and you don’t like to be around people or crowds," he told our reporter. His story, on the heels of the inspirational Invictus Games hosted in Toronto this past summer, reminds us of the price still being paid by our soldiers. His story is a part of our extensive coverage that can be found on our www.insidetoronto.com website and in our eight Toronto print editions this Thursday, leading up to Remembrance Day this Saturday. Another of our reporters attended a Toronto District School Board school in Etobicoke where about 50 students in an adult class – many of them immigrants – gathered to hear an active member of the Canadian Armed Forces. An immigrant from Pakistan, himself, Capt. Adeel Zafar, explained that some soldiers are still paying the ultimate price. The emotion rose in his voice as he remembered one Canadian soldier, a young man in his 20s, killed in Afghanistan. Zafar acted as liaison officer, and escorted the soldier’s body 200 kilometres along the Highway of Heroes from CFB Trenton to the Ontario coroner’s office in downtown Toronto. "There was not a single kilometre not filled with Canadians. Every overpass, every bridge, people were waving, saluting, holding banners and Canadian flags," Zafar told the assembled, including our reporter. "A girl about six or seven was holding a placard that said, ’thank you, Larry.’ Tears started coming down. For 10 minutes, I couldn’t see. That’s how emotional I was." That was the day, Zafar said, "it became real" to him what he and Canadian Forces members do. Canadians should hopefully often think about, and be thankful for, the sacrifice of our men and women in service – and Nov. 11 remains an essential commemoration of that remembrance.

Time to stop appointing caretakers It is time to end the practice of appointing caretaker councillors to public offices left vacant between elections. Last week’s decision by Toronto council to appoint former parks bureaucrat Lucy Troisi to fill in the seat that Pam McConnell held before her death is maybe a stark example: councillors voted against a candidate who had significant endorsements from community leaders, a nod from the late councillor’s family, and instead supported one whose main endorsement came from two councillors in Scarborough. It’s not to say that Troisi’s a bad choice for councillor, but she’s not the community’s choice, and Toronto council showed it-

picked David Soknacki, the former budget chief under Mayor David Miller. A good choice, but hardly a carbon copy of the late Moeser in style and politics. And who knows how good a choice Hart or anyone is to represent a ward? In an appointment, the people are notably silent. That’s why it might make sense to look at ending the practice of appointing politicians to office, period. Currently, council has the choice of a byelection or an appointment. Generally, earlier in a term council will hold a byelection and later it will appoint. But provincial law only requires an appointment if a vacancy occurs after March 31 of an election year. This is a process unique
to municipalities. At the federal and provincial levels of government, a vacancy must be filled by a byelection. There is no provision for appointments and if a seat is vacated close to a general election then it sits vacant. The same holds true provincially. That’s a good system to emulate. Constituents shouldn’t have to rely on their elected representative’s political opponents to provide them with fair representation, in Toronto or anywhere. Scarborough strip mall slated for expropriation to power subway DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com A strip mall with occupants including a medical clinic, a beauty salon and two residential tenants is being slated for expropriation for one of three stations to help power the new Scarborough subway. The plaza, at 1269 Danforth Rd., has been identified by the Toronto Transit Commission as an ideal location for one of three traction power substations. Staff are talking with the owner about closing the deal as soon as possible, although the TTC isn’t expected to need the land until 2020 "at the earliest," according to a report going to the Nov. 13 government management committee. If the city comes to an agreement with the owner, the report says, full expropriation won’t be necessary. But if negotiations

hen the Earls Court Branch 65 of the Royal Canadian Legion opened its doors 90 years ago, in the years between the two world wars, it had a membership of 900. Today, its membership sits at just 29, and branch president Joan Fenech has surrendered its charter and closed those doors. Fenech, who has been a member of the legion for 40 years, has been at Earls Court for the past 18. "I transferred down to this one because I felt this one needed help," she said. The members will go to the Maple Leaf/Swansea Branch 266/46, not far off - the legion itself isn’t going anywhere, not right away. But the dramatic contraction at Earls Court is a stark example of the general dwindling of the Royal Canadian Legion over the past decades. According to Tom Irvine, the first vice-president of the Royal Canadian Legion, the legion has been losing members at a rate of about 8,000 a year. Part of that is due to death - the largest cohort of members are veterans of the Second World War, a conflict that ended more than 70 years ago - but it has been a challenge to attract and retain veterans of more recent conflicts. Part of that, said Irvine and others interviewed for this article, has to do with the way that the Canadian military recruits and deploys. In the first two world wars, units tended to gather from particular towns or counties. Since the Second World War, that’s changed. "Now when the boys come home, the guy from P.E.I. probably joined the regiment in New Brunswick, and when he’s discharged he’s back in P.E.I. and his comrades are across the country," said Irvine. So that easy connection growing up with the people you served with and coming home with some of the same people doesn’t foster a local legion branch with strong individual ties.

Ryerson Maybee is a 42year-old reservist who served in Bosnia and Afghanistan. He did join the Mount Dennis Legion branch for about a year. But he only went a few times over that year. "I think the difficulty is that while I recognize the services that they provide - particularly with as-
sisting governments and accessing services, in terms of the social aspect of the legion ... the branch didn’t have very many veterans in it," he said. "They had a lot of associate members. I got put off at it. I didn’t have much in common with the people there." Associates and affiliates are the bane of many members looking to use the legion as a social club, but

Irvine points out that members who haven’t served are essential as the legion has continued to evolve. "Fifty years ago there were only past service members ... there was no other class," he said. "Over the years we invited family members as associates. Every associate was a family member of a person in the service. So as the service numbers declined in branches, the family
members pitched in. They started taking over the branch because there’s nobody else to fill the shoes. If it wasn’t for the associates, the legion would be dead now." Sgt. Craig Hood is a reservist in the Queen’s Own Rifles, and he has no problem rubbing elbows with associate members - or anything with regards to the legion. It is, he notes, a "huge organization" which offers profound benefits for soldiers returning from sometimes traumatizing service. The 44-year-old who has also served in Bosnia, Afghanistan and across Canada, has found plenty of people to talk to at his home branch in Ajax. "My branch is fortunate - we have 200 veterans from World War 2 to the present day, a few Afghanistan veterans, a lot of British veterans that have served in operations I hadn’t even heard of," he said. "There has been lots of opportunity to sit down at the table, talk and share stories, find common ground in those generational differences ... different kinds of service ... different operations. It’s healthy." Capt. Maybee said that he has found that camaraderie in his regimental mess, and Hood says that the clubs have a lot to offer. "But sometimes you want to talk to someone who’s not as connected to you as closely as regimental family is," he said. And the legion, with its associate members, also offers something else: a connection between veterans and their communities said Sgt. Hood "We kind of lost our way over the years and decades and centuries of having that bond between the community and those warriors," he said. "The legion has those family members who are connected; they’re the ones most affected by our service. When we come home and are unpacking our emotional baggage, they’re the ones that have to put it away."

City warming centres open Nov. 15 The City of Toronto is ramping up its services to help ensure those living on the street have somewhere warm to go this winter. Paul Raftis, general manager of the city’s Shelter, Support and Housing Administration unveiled plans to expand services for the homeless and underhoused this winter. "It’s not enough to be providing more shelter services per capita than any other Canadian city," Raftis said in a statement. "Our shelters are very busy and staff are working full-time on opening new shelters to address increases in demand before the end of the year, into 2018, and beyond. In the meantime, we are increasing the number of sites providing 24/7 winter re-
spite services and tripling the days of continuous service availability." Starting Nov. 15, five 24hour winter respite sites will open up across the city, an increase over the three sites opened last winter. The number of sleeping spaces will also increase, from 160 last year to 250 this year. The sites will remain open seven days a week until April 15, 2018. All told, that means a total of 760 hours of 24/7 shelter and services for the city’s homeless population, more than tripling the 240 hours of services offered last year. Three sites have been confirmed in downtown Toronto, at 21 Park Rd. in the Yonge and Bloor streets area, 323 Dundas St. E., and 25 Augusta Ave. There will also be sites

open at 705 Progress Ave. in Scarborough and at a location to be determined in Parkdale. The services will be funded by the city, but will be operated by community not-for-profits. Clients will be able to sleep, get warm meals, get referrals to other community supports and get help finding permanent housing at the winter respite sites. Anthony Stewart recalls life at East Side Motel MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Scarborough’s East Side Motel isn’t fit to live in, says Anthony Stewart, the elder of two professional-hockeyplaying brothers who spent four of their childhood years there. "I am appalled that place is still standing," Stewart wrote after seeing a Metroland Media story about the Kingston Road motel and conditions for its tenants. "My only regret is not making enough money playing in the NHL to buy the property and tear it to the ground." The City of Toronto placed Stewart’s parents and the family’s seven children - Anthony and brother Chris and their five younger sisters, in the East Side from 1996 to 2000. Toronto’s shelter spaces for families were overflowing then, and the city made extensive use of Kingston Road motels. Stewart, 32, who suited up for the Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes and Atlanta Thrashers, said it’s an understatement to say living standards at the East Side "were disgusting. "I remember mice running across the bed in which
three of my brothers and sisters shared, sometimes being in the toilet as well," he recalled. "Hot water was scarce, as I remember my mother heating up water on the stove to draw a bath." Prostitution and drug use were "rampant" in the area, recalled Stewart, who added he doesn’t remember a police presence around the motel. "I could go on and on but that place should not be habitable and if anyone actually saw the living conditions they would be sickened." The story of the Stewarts - both Anthony and Chris, 30, who plays for the Minnesota Wild - was known to current tenants of their old East Side suite, a family of four. That the brothers escaped such a life was a point of pride to them as they dealt with ceiling holes and hot water available only sometimes. Tenants say the motel doesn’t deserve a reputation as a place where addicts and prostitutes live. They are there, they say, because they don’t have the savings to go someplace better. "This place is a nightmare that we all want to wake up from," one man, a
current tenant, wrote last month. Anthony Stewart may get his wish next year: the city, after trying to buy the property for two years so the building could be torn down, initiated expropriation proceedings on Oct. 6. Motel owners Kahlon Family Holdings Inc. are due in court Dec. 15 to face provincial offences charge of failing to comply with a city order to fix five property standards deficiencies. Patrick Di Monte, their lawyer, has said the Kahlon family won’t comment on the motel "until we see some path to a resolution" with the city over the expropriation. Both Stewart brothers went from Kingston Road to the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League. Anthony was drafted a firstround pick in 2003 by the Florida Panthers, going on to join the Thrashers and Hurricanes before his NHL career ended in 2013. He has continued playing hockey in different leagues. Chris Stewart, off to a good start with six goals and two assists in his first 13 games, has also played for the Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Buffalo Sabres and Anaheim Ducks.

Working poor on the rise in Scarborough RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Working poverty is on the rise, and in the case of much of Scarborough, it’s accelerating. That’s the argument of John Stapleton, a social policy researcher with the Mowat Centre think tank and former government bureaucrat for nearly 30 years with the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services. Despite growth in other parts of Toronto, he sees a rise in income inequality, particularly north of Hwy. 401. "All those trends we saw before are now accelerating, certainly in Scarborough," said Stapleton following his talk at an event Wednesday, Nov. 2 in
Scarborough organized by the Institute for New Suburbanism. "You can see the growth of working poverty among people who have to live further away from where the jobs are." While the downtown core and other affluent areas of the city become further "Manhattanized" from runaway land values and an unprecedented construction boom, that’s not the case in Scarborough and North York where working poverty rises as low-income earners get increasingly pushed to edges of the outer suburbs and out of the city. That effect makes it appear poverty is on the wane, but in reality it’s only migrated to areas which
are more affordable. "You are seeing eradication there because rents and house prices are pushing it away," said Stapleton. The working poor are frequently invisible because their incomes place them just above the poverty line, making them largely ineligible for social assistance, even though they barely make a living wage. Before the long-form census was reinstated, voluntary household surveys virtually guaranteed an inaccurate picture since most people don’t consider themselves to be poor or rich, but middle class. But the whole-scale collapse of manufacturing due to free trade and automation has resulted in a
hollowing out of the traditional suburban middle class resulting in an increase in income polarization, said Stapleton. This is seen in the composition of shopping malls once dominated by the likes of middle-income department stores like Sears, now being replaced by a plethora of dollar stores or high-end luxury outlets. "These changes mirror the changes in the labour market," said Stapleton. The lack of transit options also plays a role in poverty, but he dismissed the idea the Scarborough subway extension will massively boost the fortunes of the working poor, since its primary purpose is to push more people into
the downtown core. "The narrative is Scarborough is not treated well because we don’t have transit and we need a subway to ferry the people to pour the coffee and clean offices downtown," he said. "That’s not how Scarborough (transit riders) looks at transit." Stapleton sees some relief coming for the working poor in the increase of the provincial hourly minimum wage to $14 as of January and up an additional dollar by 2019. He said a livable wage could push individuals a little more above the poverty line. "We’ll have to see what happens with jobs, but if everyone gets a boost we might see a time where we have reductions," he said.

"The monument takes over your whole tour, (with) the realization that of course so many did not come back, and my blessing was my father did return," Irene said this week.
For Brad, the assault launched April 9, 1917, "changed the course of history for Canadians." Muskett mustered out in 1919. Outwordly, he got through the war with just a scar on his right thumb and another behind his right ear. He worked as a caretaker, a chauffeur, a bank messenger delivering cheques by bicycle
to merchants in the Beaches. He never mentioned the war. Irene remembers her father had to take an Alka-Seltzer tablet each morning. Her mother Mabel, who saved the pay book and her husband’s medals, explained he couldn’t go without an antacid tablet, because he’d been gassed. "I’m sure he didn’t feel my sister and I should even try to
understand what he went through, many years earlier." George Kerr, as short and slight as Muskett, was the only man of the battalion he stayed friends with after the war. They were nicknamed "the gold dust twins" - small and mighty. Irene said her older sister Jean died two years ago. "My sadness is I can’t share this with her."

Charles Stephen Muskett stood five foot one and weighed 100 pounds. He wasn’t educated. He never owned a home. But Muskett was there when Canada and King George needed him in some of the most terrible battles of the First World War. If not for a pay book found in an old metal box, Irene Thomas of Scarborough wouldn’t have known her father fought at Vimy Ridge. Last Remembrance Day, her son Brad Thomas studied that book. He never knew Muskett, who died in 1954, before he was born, but Ancestry.ca was offering free access, and in 10 minutes Brad had a pile of documents in his hand. Musket had been a private in the 123rd Overseas Batallion (Royal Grenadiers) of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. They were "combat pioneers" who set out barbed wire, dug trenches and built plank roads. Muskett, a sapper, earned $1.10 a day. Brad wrote to John Mowat, author of One-Two-Three, a book on the 123rd, who replied almost instantly. Mowat knew Muskett’s name, and said he was among the first to join the battalion in 1915. A lather (drywaller) who emigrated to Toronto alone from England, Muskett arrived in France in 1917, and was at Vimy, Passchendaele and Hill 70 before the 123rd was reorganized into the 3rd Canadian Engineer Brigade for battles in 1918 known as the Hundred Days. After these revelations, Irene, who’s 86, asked Brad, "Would you take my to Vimy?" On tour with other Canadians, the Thomases were hugged by residents of French towns decorated with Canadian and British flags. They arrived at the April 9 ceremony for Vimy’s centenary - sitting in the section behind Prime Minister Justin Tru-

REMEMBRANCE DAY 2017 Vimy Oaks are now rooted at Tony Stacey Centre An inspiration found in a First World War battlefield has taken root beside the Tony Stacey Centre for Veterans Care in Highland Creek. Vimy Ridge in 1917 became a touchstone for Canadian pride after its troops won a costly victory. Surviving the battle, a Canadian soldier, Leslie Miller, found some acorns and took them home to his farm near Kennedy Road in Agincourt. He renamed it Vimy Oaks Farm. With help from volunteers, pieces from Miller’s surviving European oaks became hundreds of seedlings, many of which were sent overseas to be planted for the centenary of the battle. Two Vimy Oaks saplings were planted in front of the Stacey Centre’s cenotaph, and on Sunday, Oct. 29, a ceremony honoured the installation of part of Vimy in Scarborough.

At first, Sandney, 52, couldn’t figure out why Charli was doing this, staring up at him from his lap whenever he suddenly felt anxious or broke out in a big sweat. Or why, when Sandney was in a crowd and feeling uncomfortable, Charli would walk between him and the person talking to him. Charli, who he has had since she was eight weeks
old, was acting like the service dog Sandney needed, because he has post-traumatic stress disorder. It’s hard to say exactly why. A telecommunication systems specialist from Portage la Prairie, Man., Sandney joined the forces at 17, and served in Bosnia, Cyprus, Egypt and the Golan Heights. He saw a friend die in a fall from a castle in Cyprus, and had to carry out his body. He did a tour in Sarajevo, Bosnia, "seeing people shot all the time." Once, he stepped out of a truck to relieve himself, then realized he was standing among landmines. A soldier can go through "heavy stress times" and feel it’s no big deal, he says, part of the routine. But in the last few years, with his career on the downslope, "all this stuff is slowly coming out." "Now I get high anxiety out of the blue," said Sandney. "You just start sweating, and you don’t like to be around people or crowds."

Jeff Sandney, who was diagnosed with PTSD, decided to train his golden retriever, Charli, as a service dog. Sadney has had a long career with forces, including overseas posting in Cyprus, Bosnia, Sarajevo and the Golan Heights. But Charli knew when something was wrong. Sandney wanted a service dog to help with his PTSD and wouldn’t consider an-
other animal. Man and dog have still put in a lot of work over the past year, getting Charli ready to pass the test,
though there is no national set of standards for service dogs so far, a fact which worries Sandney. Sandney, who lives most
of the time in a condo across from Denison, meets a trainer, Jonathan Levin, four hours a week. "If I go out alone someplace where I might run into problems, I don’t want to do it unless my trainer’s with me." The Canadian Forces has no list of veterans and serving members with service dogs, but Levin brought a handful of clients from around Greater Toronto together. Some go with their dogs to Toronto malls, including Centerpoint, and more unusual places such as between rows of slot machines at Woodbine Racetrack (the casino doesn’t mind), trying to find things which may distract the dogs. "We call it environmental training," Sandney said. People sometimes walk up and start petting the dogs. Charli doesn’t mind, and neither does Sandney, as long as they ask first. "I’ve only had her growl at one person and that was 4 a.m. on the street," he said.

REMEMBRANCE DAY 2017 Nurse, 99, reflects on aiding troops during the war FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Marie Moyes was just 25 when she landed in the beaches of Arromanches one week after D-Day to tend to the wounded. She was part of a small (British) Queen Alexandra Imperial Military Nursing Service unit that volunteered to head into battle to set up field hospitals, following closely behind the troops. "I was on the first ship of nurses after D-Day," said Moyes, now aged 99. "They didn’t have a full hospital before D-Day, so we came and set one up. We moved as the troops moved forward." Asked if she was ever in imminent danger, Moyes didn’t sugar-coat it. "We were always in danger, but there was no time to think about it." Born in Newcastle, England on Aug. 28, 1918 to Robert and Maude Steerment, Moyes was the second of six children. Her father served

skywalk." But the war did have one bright spot for Moyes: meeting her future husband, Philip. They were both married at the time, and met up again several years later in 1949 through a mutual friend following their divorces. They were married Dec. 21, 1949 - "the longest night of the year," their family would joke. The couple moved to Toronto in 1957, settling near Don Mills and Lawrence Avenue. Moyes worked as a nurse at a doctor’s office and retired from the profession at 65, and her husband was an editor at communications company Maclean Hunter. Philip died in 2001 at age 84. When it comes to Remembrance Day, Moyes said while she prefers to forget, she does acknowledge its importance. "History should be there to learn it and learn from it."

Archived photos offer glimpse into life on home front From wounded warriors and mourning mothers to curious kids and celebratory civilians, the First and Second World Wars touched the lives of all Canadian citizens - and Toronto residents were no exception. This Remembrance Day, Metroland Media Toronto dug into the Toronto Archives’ vast collection of First and Second World War-era photographs to select a handful of images that offer a glimpse into life on the wartime home front. The photos chosen depict those among the scores of injured Canadian soldiers who recuperated from their battlefield wounds within refuge of Toronto’s hospitals, as well as some of the families left behind by their less fortunate comrades. Multiple Remembrance Day ceremonies available Scarborough’s Remembrance Day starts early on Sunday, Nov. 5 with a 2 p.m. service at Scarborough Civic Centre. The event, in the building’s rotunda on Borough Drive, features a March on the Colors, O Canada performed by Scott Newlands and the East York Concert Band, and a reading of In Flanders Fields by Maeesha Biswas.
On Saturday, Nov. 11, there will be a ceremony at the Toronto Zoo on Meadowvale Road, starting at 10:55 a.m. at its Waterside Theatre. Free admission to the zoo is granted to persons in uniform, but this ends at 10:30. Another long-standing tradition is an 11 a.m. ceremony at the Scarborough Cenotaph, on land where Danforth Avenue and
Kingston Road meet. Toronto Police stop traffic to help participants reach the monument. At 1 p.m. is another service at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 617, the Dambusters, on Warden Avenue. The Tony Stacey Centre for Veterans’ Care on Lawson Road in Highland Creek has its service at 7 p.m.
