Sharp stabbing pains in the chest and a sore left arm are what Ken Scullion, 56 at the time, woke up to on an early July morning in 2011. He was having a heart attack. That life-changing event drove Scullion to become a volunteer at Rouge Valley Health System’s Centenary hospital in Scarborough where he was treated. “The paramedics got me to
Rouge Valley and I was immediately swarmed by a team,” Scullion said. “I had people asking me questions, people taking my shoes and socks off, next thing I know, I was on a table and a cardiologist said ‘you’re gonna be just fine.’” Scullion was treated by Dr. Kiber Yared with the hospital’s Code STEMI program. It’s a concise procedure allowing a quick opening of a blocked artery to abort a heart attack. >>>SURVIVOR, page 25

Residents ready to work in Scarborough HILARY CATON scm@insidetoronto.com Community members will take to their neighbourhood parks and streets throughout the next few days to clean up the litter left behind after cold, long winter. They’ll be gathering together, garbage bags and plastic gloves in tow, to participate in the city’s 2014 Clean Toronto Together campaign, which takes place
during Earth Week. The campaign aims to raise the city’s awareness of the environmental impact litter can have and, of course, to start the new season off with a clean slate. “The first piece of litter is the worst piece of litter,” said Ward 38 Scarborough Centre Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker. “Because once one person makes a mess, (others) feel it’s OK to make a mess. >>>RESIDENTS, page 24

ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com A concert in honour of a young Scarborough murder victim is raising money for a new program that will provide guitars and guitar lessons for at-risk youth. Tyler “T-Lar” McGill was an avid guitar player, who in his teens, played in a band called United. On July 29, 2007, at age 22, he was stabbed at the drive-thru of the McDonald’s at Eglinton Avenue and McCowan Road. He died in hospital five days later. McGill worked as a carpenter, but wanted to return to school

New collaboration for Love Guru sitar player Scarborough’s Anwar Khurshid in concert with Sultans of String May 4 at Kingston Road United Church
“
NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com
My family didn’t really like it. To live here in the West, play an eastern instrument, how am I going to make it, you know?
There are strings attached to the latest collaboration by Scarborough sitar player Anwar Khurshid, whose music has graced such movies as Life of Pi and the Love Guru – plenty of strings. T h a t ’s b e c a u s e t h e 40-something Pakistani-born musician, who has lived in the Morningside Road and Sheppard Avenue area for the last decade and who teaches sitar through his Sitar School of Toronto, is hooking up with another eclectic, renowned east Toronto-based band – the Sultans of String. As the band name suggests, it is heavily string based, led by original members Chris McKhool, a long-time Beach resident on violin, and Kevin Laliberte, an East York resident, on acoustic guitar.

the year for 2014. Khurshid also has a more traditional solo effort available called Just Sitar - Madhuvanti, A Taste of Honey. He is also busy with a jazz collaboration that also includes Waleed Abdulhamid on bass, Eric Boucher on keyboard, Neil Brathwaite on saxaphone and Rich Greenspoon on drums – known collectively as Avani. They jam regularly at Harlem on Richmond Street and are working on an upcoming album. Staff photo/DAN PEARCE
Inaugural collaboration Their first public collaboration will be a Sunday, May 4, matinee, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Kingston Road United Church, 975 Kingston Road (just west of Victoria Park). The church will use the occasion to launch their own concert series in which they’ll raise money for improvements to their venerable old

building including, among other things, a new stage for musical performances as well as improved accessibility. Khurshid was born in Quetta, Pakistan where he had the good fortune to be hooked up by his father with a renowned sitar teacher who
became like a second father to him and who immersed him in the classical music of the sub-continent. Once in multicultural Toronto, however, not only did Khurshid mix with people from all over the world – so did his music.
For instance, his last album, called Enter the Gate, was an improbable collaboration with virtuoso Montreal bluesman guitarist and vocalist Paul DesLauriers who was just in Toronto to collect his Maple Blues awards for both acoustic act and guitarist of
Do the math Khurshid came to Canada, following in the footsteps of his brother. “I really liked how he had changed as a human being and what Canada had done to him,” explained Khurshid. He found the going tough at first, as do many immigrants, working at a number of different jobs.
To find his way out of the sometimes vicious circle that can face some new immigrants, he just did the math. Literally. Besides music, he had also studied and excelled at math in his native Pakistan. “I got into (the University of Waterloo) because I aced one of the tests that they have. I got the highest mark in Canada in the math test.” Actuarial science degree He completed his degree in actuarial science and then got a job in the industry with Manulife. But music could not be denied. He explained that around the turn of the century, “I quit my actuarial job to do music full time.” It did hit a bit of a sour note with his family, he conceded, with a chuckle. “My family didn’t really like it. To live here in the West, play an eastern instrument, how am I going to make it you know? But there was this fire inside me, there was this passion you know that I am a musician and I wanted to do that.”

Meeting on future Guild Park plans set for Laurier Collegiate Residents are invited to plan for the future of Guild Park this Tuesday at a time when the park’s fortunes could take a sharp turn for the better. Falling revenues shuttered its centrepiece, the Guild Inn, in 2001, and despite supporters’ efforts, the park and former arts colony by the Scarborough Bluffs has
been largely in a state of decay since. Weeks of tree-cutting over the winter, brought on by ice storm damage and the emerald ash borer, have only added to grief over the state of the park. In early April, however, Toronto council approved a deal in principle which would
see a private company restore the original Guild Inn structure, known as the Bickford Residence, and run a restaurant and banquet hall there. As a deal is signed, the City of Toronto is expected to start building other cultural and horticultural projects, worth millions, in the park. Besides promising to
replant many of its devastated areas this spring, the city is also building a Guild Park and Gardens Management Plan which will cover the care of forests, gardens, trails and cultural artifacts. The first public workshop on the plan is Tuesday April 29, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate on
Guildwood Parkway. A volunteer group, Friends of the Guild Park and Gardens, has called for “whole park” plan for the Guild and welcomed the chance for more resident involvement there. Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie will also update meeting attendees on negotiations for the
Guild Inn proposal, which he has said, “will have four separate event spaces, with the capability to be combined as one space for larger events, (and) a restaurant with an adjoining patio.”

It’s time for spring cleaning W
Write us
ith the changing season, and a sense of renewal in the air, Torontonians are heading outside to clean up their homes – and their
city. This weekend, kicking off with corporate and school cleanup day on Friday, the city will be getting a good (spring) cleaning, at the hands of residents who want to make sure their city, their neighbourhood, and their own street are as pleasing as possible. These seemingly small actions by a group of residents helps build not only a sense of pride in the neighbourhood, but also a connection between those who live in it as they undertake a common goal. “It creates community,” said David Juliusson, program officer at Fort York National Historic Site, who is leading the cleanup of the historic site this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. “A lot of people in the neighbourhood are new... Something like this gives them a chance to meet other people.” What started in 2001 as a our view 20-minute cleanup initiative by amalgamated Toronto’s Small actions first mayor, Mel Lastman, has create strong turned into a three-day city-wide cleanup where people get out of communities their homes, grab a garbage bag and get working. The City of Toronto kicked off its annual spring cleanup campaign earlier in the month with the removal of graffiti, cleaning up garbage and hauling away debris from city property, which gathered over the winter months. Coinciding with Earth Week (April 22 to 27), the cleanups are happening across the city – from Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York to the Beach, York to Bloor West. To see what cleanup projects other Toronto communities are taking on and tips on how to get involved, see our special feature at http://bit. ly/1lxd5hY Not only do these cleanups make the city look great, but they bring out residents, students, businesses, organizations and community groups – many leading the cleanups, others joining in just because they care. These cleanup initiatives should be seen as just one of a multi-pronged approach to community building. Why not extend this kind of community exercise more often than once a year? You can find a community group / organization across the city. Look into joining one, and make a difference in your community.

Stanley Cup fever has a few side effects
W
e’re only a week into the NHL playoffs and it seems as if everybody is already hobbling around. I’m talking about the fans, not the players. The players are none the worse for wear. They’re not allowed to be at playoff at time. The fans, on the other hand, are plenty the worse. What’s more, they’re plenty the worse for simply watching and last I checked viewing was a non-contact sport. Talk about lightweights. Anyhow, what follows are a few of the most common ailments seen off the ice at this time of the hockey season. Twentydonitis It’s twice as painful as tendonitis because it affects both wrists at the same time. It comes from non-stop texting and tweeting – after every goal, every save, every shot,
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY pass, deke, hit, penalty, missed call, whatever. Especially after whatever. Cyberspace really comes to life after whatever and nothing is considered too insignificant to comment on during the first round of the playoffs. Onehundredandtendonitis That’s tweeting and texting just about phenomenal Colorado Avalanche rookie Nathan MacKinnon. Heck, tweeting and texting about what he does on each shift is a serious workout Sighatica This affliction is currently reaching epidemic proportions. It attacks nonsports fans stuck sitting on the subway across from two rabid fans who are
babbling incessantly about the NHL playoffs all the way from Union to Finch or from Kennedy to Kipling, only to take the occasional break to gab incessantly about the NBA playoffs. Condo-malacia Another malady plaguing non-fans. This one affects people who live in a building in which seemingly everybody has friends over partying on the balcony every night before, during and after the games. Foot in Mouth Disease This is extremely prevalent this time of year. The team that you’ve been bragging about non-stop all season, assured everyone they would win it all and that you have also chosen in the office Stanley Cup pool is about to be eliminated after the first round. Oh, the humiliation. Face Plant On Deskitis By far the most debilitating first-round playoff
disorder of all. It affects employees who live in the eastern time zone and make it a point to see every second of every playoff broadcast – and the postgame shows, too, of course – including all the games on the west coast that go into overtime, no matter how many overtime periods there may be. The symptom? Your work shift starts at 9 a.m. and you’re out cold by 9:01 a.m. And to add insult to injury? Your entertaining snoring exploits are booming on the company’s sound system. Coast to coast. In Dolby Atmos. The only thing missing is the popcorn. Apparently that doesn’t kick in until the second round. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at jamie.wayne@sympatico.ca

More men are needed in Next council could be dull, productive early childhood education W To the editor: Throughout my experiences while completing the early childhood education (ECE) program at Centennial College, I have been left wondering... why is there such a lack of male presence in the ECE and teaching fields? ECE’s in our society are so important because early childhood is the time in children’s lives when they are developing the foundation of their brain for learning for the rest of their lives. Crucial times These are crucial/impressionable times in the lives of children, and ECE’s spend 80 per cent of the week with them. Early childhood educators have the responsibility of molding the children’s lives in various ways; cognitive, social-emotional, language,
fine motor and gross motor. With that being said, it is so important children observe a balance of gender roles in their daycare/school setting so they can understand gender equality at a young age. Development Both men and women are absolutely crucial in this field of work, as both genders bring important characteristics to the table that children need, and should be exposed to at this young age of development. An example of a balance of roles in an environment is one in which, men and women can both equally collaborate on providing physical/active activities as well as a calm, quiet nurturing environment well. Males along with women in this field are also impor-
tant because of single parent families, where children are in dire need of a male role model in their lives. Role model Daycare/school may be the only place in their lives where they will have a male role model that they can look up to. As a society, we must advocate and focus on defeminizing the field of ECE/teaching so children can have the best and most well-balanced foundation of education that they all deserve to have. hat an upset it would be, if city councillor Adam Vaughan had his hat handed him in the federal byelection in TrinitySpadina. Anything is possible in politics. But in this hometurf byelection in a riding whose outgoing incumbent is busy with her own election, it’s hard to see Vaughan doing anything but winning – taking over Olivia Chow’s former riding the same way he took over her former ward in 2006. News of Vaughan’s expected Liberal candidacy emerged last week, after a meeting with Liberal leader Justin Trudeau. In the Liberal caucus, Vaughan would take the lead on cities. No doubt he’ll also make an impression in Question Period. At city hall, Vaughan has been one of the more effective opposition councillors – asking tough questions, deflating fatuous arguments, and goading the Fords and their

allies into red-faced rage (by my completely unscientific observations, about once a meeting). It’s behaviour like that that has helped make the former journalist a very electable commodity in the downtown communities he represents – and less than that, across the breadth of the city – as became clear when earlier in the term he was seriously contemplating a run for mayor. As such, his departure leaves an interestingshaped hole in Toronto Council. It would be an exaggeration to say that Adam Vaughan’s departure could mark a return to collegiality at the council that has become the RoadWarrior model of municipal government. But looking at the next term, there are going to be a number of departures that might just put the ‘order’ back in
20
Robert’s Rules. At least one Ford brother – Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford – isn’t returning for 2015. Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande, the former budget chief whose frequent rages at disruptive behaviour at council cause almost as much disruption, is retiring. What a dull and potentially productive council we could have at the end of 2014. It will be interesting to see what Vaughan can do in Ottawa. As a councillor, his reputation for a sharp tongue is matched by his track record as a deal broker – getting as many concessions as he can from the various developers looking to plant towers in the downtown neighbourhoods he represents. Vaughan has a genuine expertise, won on the ground, on urban issues.

Righting a wrong on TTC sign A TTC rider is said to have corrected, by hand, a typo on a wayfinding sign at Bloor-Yonge Station over the weekend. After a picture of the sign – which contained the word Southbound but missing an “h” -was posted via social media (imgur.com/2h8RoZ7), it seems someone appeared at the station, ladder in hand, and used a marker to make the correction. Spokesperson Brad Ross confirmed the correction was not made by a TTC employee. He apologized for the error and promised the sign, one of several installed at the station as part of rebranding efforts, would be replaced immediately. critical of P3s launches media blitz wUnion

But one Canadian band has stood the test of time and remains one of Toronto’s most famous rock and metal groups: Moxy. Founded in Scarborough by lead guitarist Earl Johnson and then lead singer Buzz Shearman in the early 70s, the band is gearing up to host their 40th anniversary at The Rockpile East in Scarborough this Saturday night, April 26. “The Rockpile East is actually located in what was the old Knob Hill Hotel

and... it was one of our original launching pads back in 1974,” Johnson said. “It’s pretty ironic to go back to where we started.” Moxy enjoyed major success in the 70s, even referred to as “Canada’s Led Zeppelin,” releasing six albums and touring North America with bands such as Black Sabbath, Santana, Boston and AC/DC.

“Actually, the first time AC/DC came to the U.S, they actually opened up for us on three dates,” Johnson said. While they headlined shows with 10,000 people, Johnson also recalls shows in Toronto, for example, at Massey Hall, that were amazing. “We sold that out and it was a great show,” he said. “We have pictures on the website and on Facebook and when you look at them it was pretty deadly for the time...it was amazing.” Like most bands, Moxy has had many evolutions and eventually disbanded. music and also opened Zone Music, with studios in Scarborough and Pickering where he teaches guitar, However, once bands achieve a certain level of success, their fan base never dies, and Moxy seems to be one of those bands. Jon Long, owner of the Long & McQuade music stores, is one of those loyal fans who wanted Moxy back. “He wanted to re-record all the Moxy stuff, so on our newest album we’ve re-recorded it, modernized it and we changed some of the structures and arrangements to make it sound more modern,” Johnson said. Not only will this album showcase Moxy`s most popular hits re-vamped, what’s also new is the addition of their new lead singer, Scarborough resident and musician Nick Walsh. “Nick’s deadly, he’s a great singer and a rock star waiting to happen here in Canada,” Johnson said, adding that his vocals are perfect for Moxy’s music
and he helped with the new arrangements of their newest CD. Walsh, who currently heads his own band Famous Underground, is also a Juno-Award winner, winning Best Hard Rock Album of the Year in 1992 with his former band, Slik Toxik. Walsh said it was last September when he was approached to do a show with Moxy at the Sound Academy in Toronto. Ironically, while Walsh said he wasn’t a Moxy fan, or even heard their music, he remembers their music through his two older brothers who were huge fans. “After listening to it, I thought I think I can pull this off. It has elements of the music that influenced me growing up such as Aerosmith, AC/DC or Led Zeppelin; so I said I would do the show,” Walsh said. Walsh said performing with Moxy was amazing and it was a great show which they re-recorded called Live in T.O., so when he was approached to
help with the re-record of the new album, yet to be named, he agreed. “It’s so much fun to take songs that are already existing and to be able to play with them al little bit, re-arrange them, add our own flair, modernize it so to speak,” Walsh said. Walsh said this new album and the 40th anniversary bash is for the die-hard Moxy fans and hopefully also entices a new fan base. Much like Moxy, this new album is based on a solid, established foundation with a modern sound and a new lead singer and other band members. “I think it’s amazing that Earl can keep the passion alive for the songs that he wrote, and that there are fans out there who are interested in seeing this revived Moxy,” Walsh said. Moxy’s 40th anniversary bash will be this Saturday, at The Rockpile East 8 p.m., 2787 Eglinton Ave. E. Tickets are $20 at the door.

Residents can drop off their unwanted obsolete electronics at the school, 685 Military Trail, between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the east parking lot. With December’s ice storm destroying much of Toronto’s tree canopy, Lowe’s Canada is giving away 1,000 red maples in Toronto to help replace “the visible scars left on the natural landscape.” Project Replant will handout 1,000 of the four- to five-foot trees at two of its Toronto stores. In Scarborough, 500 trees will be available at the Lowe’s at 800 Warden Ave. Toronto officials estimate 20
per cent of the city’s trees were lost in the ice storm, with some streets losing as much as 50 to 80 per cent. Lowe’s free trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis on Saturday, April 26 beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the store parking lots. Trees will be given out while quantities last and no purchase is necessary. Agincourt Chess club meets The Agincourt Chess Club meets Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. at the L’Amoreaux Community Centre, 2000 McNicoll Ave., just west of Kennedy Road. Adults and seniors who are interested in playing chess are invited to take part. Those attending are reminded there are no fees, teaching or tournaments at the Agincourt Chess Club meeting.

Key to caregiving: ‘take care of yourself’ The Caregiver Show slated for May 14
‘T
he most important advice is also the most difficult, and that is, ‘Take care of yourself’.” That’s what Shirlee Sharkey, president and CEO of Saint Elizabeth Health Care, believes. ”Caregivers give so much of themselves, it’s important to recharge to allow them to continue to give. Time for yourself is important. It’s time you need to be the best caregiver you can be. I would also encourage laughter and fun – even when things are challenging, try to cherish the
time, and treasure the tender moments you have together,” she said. Sharkey is among the speakers at The Caregiver Show, May 14 at The Direct Energy Centre. Visit the show website at www. caregivershow.ca for more information and to register for this very special free day. An estimated eight million Canadians are family caregivers. It’s not uncommon for people to care for family members or friends in short- or long-term need. In fact, it is so common we

ing job of keeping it clean, it’s just that we’re picking up after that one per cent that aren’t thoughtful of their neighbours.” STUDENTS HELP St. Richard Catholic School is also doing its part to clean up after that one per cent, by choosing North Bendale Park as its chosen community cleanup spot on Friday, April 25. “We use it a lot,” said St. Richard’s principal Chris Douros. “We’re over there for cross country and at the end of the year for a picnic. The kids use it frequently; it’s like their own backyard.”
According to Douros, for some students that’s actually true. He said some of the children’s own backyards back onto the park. For him, it’s a great way for students to realize their connection and take care of the property they so frequently use in and outside of school. St. Richard school is “very environmentally conscious,” have been for at least five years, said Douros. “We have an eco-team made up of kids. They’re our leaders and our push to have the clean up days,” said Douros. And their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed, he added,
that the school has reached the gold level status as a part of the Ontario EcoSchool Certification Program by pushing for litter-less lunches, creating a vegetable garden and other eco-friendly initiatives. “They’re all willing to participate (in helping the environment) they know there’s good in what they’re doing.” For the community these cleanup days signify not only a fresh start and a sign that spring has sprung but it also invigorates the community’s spirit to come together, which is something De Baeremaeker described as magical. “Neighbours get to meet
neighbours, people are introduced to each other’s dogs...it’s a great community building exercise. We live in such an amazing society but we’re all very busy and we have no reason sometimes to talk to our neighbour,” said De Baeremaeker. “To have a community come together and everybody grab a garbage bag and go and clean up the neighbourhood park and street, it helps people find that common ground to tip their hat and say: ‘Hi how are you?’”

Survivor supports other patients >>>from page 1 “The operation, they went in through the radial artery in my right arm,” Scullion said. “I had one major artery in my heart blocked, it was 99 per cent blocked and they were able to stent that during the procedure.” After a successful recovery, he joined the Cardiac Rehabilitation program. Today, Scullion volunteers once a week with the program at the hospital, helping and supporting patients recovering from various heart-related illnesses. While still in his own recovery back in 2011, Scullion was approached by the program co-ordinators to join the rehab program. He jumped to the offer and started the six-month program, paid for by OHIP. “I liked the program and valued the program so much because of what it did for me,” Scullion said. “I thought, yeah I could happily see myself volunteering. I’ve been there for two and a half years now.” The rehab program is for a
program. But exercise is only part of the program. “We walk with the patients, providing support,” Scullion said. “If you’ve had a heart attack or any serious issue with your cardiac health, there’s a lot of fear. It’s that kind of support for patients, giving them a chance to express their doubts, fears, hopes and all the questions they’ve got.” RV C v o l u n t e e r s a r e required to volunteering at least one day a week. Scullion is at RVC once a week, but many times depending on circumstances he volunteers up to three times during the week. The hospital will host its annual Walk With Heart event on Saturday to raise funds for cardiac care. The event takes place in the morning at Centenary, 2867 Ellesmere Rd., on the 11th floor. Need new windows? Do your homework! When it comes to replacing your windows, it’s important to choose a company that you trust to protect your home with expert installation and high quality products. Begin your search for a window company by visiting dealer showrooms and asking friends and neighbours for recommendations. Do some research to find out the history of the company and its reputation. Remember, a well established window company should be a member of such organizations as B.B.B. (Better Business Bureau), S.A.W.D.A.C. (Siding and Window Dealers Association of Canada) andWindow Wise. Energy Savings is one of the most important factors in selecting your windows. Because new windows are meant to last for years, the decision you make in the selection of your windows can help define energy efficiency and comfort levels in the home for years to come. High performance windows
are a must for your investment, offering significant improvements in solar control, thermal comfort and energy efficiency. Manufacturer’s do this by incorporating low-E coatings, inert gas fills and better edge spacer and frames. Price may not always be the determining factor. The cheapest window you find may not perform at the level you want. So make sure you fully understand the true value of your purchase, and don’t let price dictate your final decision. There are a wide variety of windows available on the market that can make the task of selecting the appropriate windows confusing. There are two basic types of windows: those that open and those that don’t, called operable and fixed. There are also windows that tilt in, this allows you to clean the outside of your window from inside your home. Bay and Bow windows are also very popular in today’s homes. You should be advised by the window representative as to what type of window
style is best for your home, both in practicality and aesthetics. Warranties are a large part of your window investment. Your new window warranty is only as good as the manufacturer behind it. Dealing with well known brands is a good idea. Make sure that you get your warranty in writing from the dealer you purchase from. Finally let’s not forget about the installation. When you are buying new windows you are also purchasing the workmanship that comes with it. Ask the representative about the installation and the types of materials that are used for the job, such as insulation and interior trims. This is crucial as to how well the window will perform. Ask about the clean up after the installation and what kind of labor warranty is given. Replacing your old windows is not that difficult after all. Whatever your reason may be it will definitely be a sound investment, as long as you do your homework.

We’ll provide the trees. You provide the green thumbs. Last December’s ice storm caused major damage throughout Southern Ontario, leaving thousands of fallen trees across our communities. Now, we can help replace what was lost as well as do something good for the environment. Through Lowe’s “Project Replant” we’ll be giving away hundreds of starter trees. All you have to do is come to Lowe’s, pick one up and plant it.
Together, we can build a greener environment! This Saturday, April 26 at 9:30am, visit Lowe’s in West Scarborough, 800 Warden Ave. or York, 1300 Castlefield Ave. for a...

A transportation proposal unveiled last Thursday by the province for frequent express GO train service promises faster travel than the subway. If completed, the GO Regional Express Rail plan would expand GO train service from a commuter service limited to peak period trips to all-day, everyday service, making for a faster alternative to the subway and reducing travel times in some cases by as much as half, said Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. “This will be a faster option for those who are travelling in and out of Toronto’s downtown core,” said Wynne, who announced the plan alongside Ontario Transportation
Minister Glen Murray at GO’s Willowbrook maintenance facility in Etobicoke. “You can get to the station and even if you’re a little bit late, you know there will be a train coming by every 15 minutes.” According to the plan, the new service would allow GO customers to get from the Kennedy subway and GO station in Scarborough to Union Station in under 20 minutes at anytime, compared to the same route via subway that would take almost 40 minutes. Train travel from any Toronto GO station would be faster by at least eight minutes than a similar route on the TTC. The express trains would also be fully electric, said Murray, with plans to phase out existing diesel units
that currently make up the bulk of GO service. “Electric trains will run frequently and they will be moving people much more quickly,” said Murray. “There will be increased capacity and higher connectivity,” he added. Murray also said the UnionPearson Express air rail link service between Pearson International Airport and Union Station to debut next year will be a part of the service. Funding for the project is unknown, but Wynne said money would come from a recent $15-billion transit commitment to the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area over 10 years. She also said Metrolinx was committed to introducing the service within the same time frame.
