Scarborough’s Variety Village will host the spirit of the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games this Friday, as 10 torchbearers walk or wheel around its track. The 10 a.m. event at the Danforth Avenue recreation centre is part of the Parapan Am torch run’s final day and open to the public. On Tuesday, Archie Allison, Variety’s director of access and awareness and an employee at the facility for three decades, was the only participating torchbearer whose name had been released. Jill MacCannell, a spokesperson for the Games, said this is because there have been fre-
quent changes in the line-up of torchbearers. Parapan Am Games athletic events will soon be close by, on two areas of the University o f To ro n t o S c a r b o ro u g h campus. From this Saturday morning until Friday, Aug. 14, swimming and sitting volleyball events are at the Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House at Morningside Avenue and Military Trail. The Parapan Am Games’ wheelchair tennis competitions, meanwhile, are at the UTSC Tennis Centre located on Old Kingston Road in the Highland Creek valley.

Exterminator hired to deal with rat complaints Enbridge Gas has hired an exterminator after northwest Scarborough households near its pipeline dig site complained about rats. The company, whose GTA Project is laying a new pipeline from north of Steeles Avenue to just north of Sheppard Avenue, said it’s “unclear” if its construction is to blame. But in a statement Thursday, July 30, it said it is working closely with Jim Karygiannis, the local councillor, to “identify the areas of concern” and help residents. “As part of this, we have contracted a professional pest control company to assist,” added Jamie Anne Vaughan, an Enbridge spokesperson. Karygiannis said he began

receiving rat complaints from owners of well-kept homes north and south of McNicoll Avenue after Enbridge started digging. He speculated a large nest in a field was disturbed by the construction, and added there’s “no Peter Piper” to whistle them back. “The only option we have is to exterminate them.” In mid-July, the councillor sent flyers to homes near McNicoll and Pharmacy, asking for more reports and advising people on how to deal with the rodents.

Sections of gas pipeline await installation by labourers working just off of Pharmacy Avenue as part of an Enbridge project in the northwest Scarborough area.
This week, he praised Enbridge for acting as a good corporate citizen, and sent out another flyer, promising
to update the neighbourhood in the near future. Enbridge said most of its Scarborough construction
should be finished by October and areas will be “returned to their previous state or better.”
Scarborough will have six ridings up for grabs in election MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The extra-long election campaign which could begin Sunday could turn Scarborough’s six federal ridings some different colours. Before 2011, changes to Scarborough’s federal landscape come slowly - and all of it was Liberal red - but things turned out differently that year. As a stronger NDP took more votes, Conservatives and New Democrats broke through, taking two local seats each. Dan Harris was elected in Scarborough Southwest for the NDP, along with Rathika Sitsabaiesan, the first TamilCanadian MP, in ScarboroughRouge River. Conservative Roxanne James won in
Scarborough Centre and fellow Tory Corneliu Chisu finished first in PickeringScarborough East. Now, three of these four first-time MPs have to fight for their posts in Scarborough, as will two Liberal incumbents, Ar nold Chan in Scarborough-Agincourt and Scarborough-Guildwood MP John McKay. district split After a redistribution, Chisu, whose district was split between Scarborough and Durham Region, opted to run again in the new Durham riding of PickeringUxbridge. Redistribution formed a new riding along Scarborough’s eastern boundary called Scarborough-Rouge
AGINCOURT
Park - appropriate because differing views on how the Rouge National Urban Park should be run could be a local campaign issue. New riding Here, Liberal Gar y Anandasangaree and New Democrat Kantharatnam Shanthikumar face Jerry Bance, a Conservative who also ran in ScarboroughRouge River in 2006 and 2008. Sitsabaiesan - who wasn’t happy about having her riding split up - is running next door in the new district of Scarborough North. To hold her seat, she’ll have to defeat Liberal candidate Shaun Chen, who’s been chairperson of the Toronto District School Board, as well

as Conservative Ravinder Malhi and a Green candidate, Eleni MacDonald. (Chen, who is trustee for ScarboroughRouge River, has said he’d resign as TDSB chair when the campaign begins). unchanged To the west, ScarboroughAgincourt remains unchanged, but Chan replaced retiring long-serving MP Jim Karygiannis in a byelection last year. After treatment for a rare cancer, Chan is running for re-election against New Democrat Laura Patrick and Bin Chang, who also ran for a regional council post in Markham in 2014. Many eyes will be on Scarborough Southwest, where Harris must contend
with Bill Blair, Toronto’s former police chief, running as a Liberal. Conservatives in the riding choose a candidate on August 10. In Scarborough Centre, James is up against New Democrat Alex Wilson, who ran provincially last year in Scarborough-Agincourt, as well as Liberal Salma Zahid, and a Libertarian candidate, Katerina Androutsous. To the east in ScarboroughGuildwood, incumbent McKay must again fend off Chuck Konkel, the Conservative who came close to defeating him in 2011 and also ran in 2008. New Democrat Laura Casselman and Michael Buzny, a Libertarian, are running too.

Federal and provincial governments are promising three new grade separations on the Lakeshore East GO line in Scarborough. Work on these projects could be up to nine years away, and there are no construction schedules or cost estimates yet. Sometime before 2024, though, work should begin o n u n d e r p a s s e s b e l ow Scarborough Golf Club Road, Galloway Road and Morningside Avenue. Officials from both governments announced projects last Friday, just ahead of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s election campaign launch. They said each government was committing $100 million for the three underpasses in Scarborough and another at Burloak Drive in Halton Region, meaning each project should cost about $50 million. In a release, ScarboroughGuildwood MPP Mitzie Hunter said the Scarborough projects are good news for her constituents whether they use GO Transit or not. “Upgrading these junctions from level crossings to under- and overpasses will help make their trips easier, safer and more convenient,” she said. Anne Marie Atkins, a spokesperson for Metrolinx, said an environmental assessment will launch this fall for a section of Lakeshore East which includes the separations at Galloway Road and Morningside, and another EA will launch next year for a portion of the line including a separation at Scarborough Golf Club.

Time for the Parapan Am Games to shine W
hile we’re still basking in the glow of the success of the recent Pan Am Games in Toronto, it’s important not to forget that an equally prestigious athletic event opens tomorrow. The Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games run from Aug. 7 to 15, and residents can do their part to make these Games just as successful as the Pan Ams. The Parapans officially open Friday with ceremonies at York University’s CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium starting at 5:45 p.m. The Parapan Am Games in Toronto will feature more than 1,600 athletes from 28 countries competing in 15 sports. As was the case with the Pan Am Games, competition will take place at a our view number of Toronto venues. There’s track and field at York Celebrate University, swimming, sitting and wheelchair tennis our athletes volleyball at the University of Toronto Aug. 7 to 15 Scarborough, and wheelchair basketball at the Mattamy Centre downtown. There’s archery at Varsity Stadium, and the cycling road races at Ontario Place. Markham, Mississauga, Milton and Whitby are also hosting events for those hoping to catch Parapan action beyond Toronto’s borders. As always, these Games serve as a qualifier for the Paralympics. That’s especially important for a number of top Canadian athletes and teams including the men’s wheelchair basketball team. Our men’s teams are three-time gold medal winners at the Paralympics (including gold at the London 2012 Games) and they are looking to continue their golden ways come the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Their first step on that road comes at the Toronto Parapan Am Games. The Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team also has an impressive resume, having won Paralympic gold medals in 1992, 1996 and 2000. The excitement for the Parapan Am Games begins this week with the arrival of the torch relay, which will be in Toronto today with stops at Corus Quay, Inukshuk Park, Queens Quay and Yonge Street, and David Pecaut Square for a community celebration at 12:30 p.m. that will feature a guest appearance by Rick Hansen. Tomorrow, the torch relay visits Variety Village in Scarborough, Queen’s Park, and the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto on Spadina Road in advance of the opening ceremonies.

Straight talk about the dog days of summer
M
y message box got a serious workout over the long weekend. It was standing and screaming room only in there. Everybody was whining up a storm. But it wasn’t about the hot weather. It was about the phrase du jour referring to it. Q. Jamie, I always hate the beginning of August. The only expression we ever hear is the ‘dog days of summer’. We’re bombarded with it. The dog days of summer, the dog days of summer, the dog days of summer. Enough already. This has been going on for donkey’s years. No other creatures get even a mention until they’re over. It makes me angry as a bear, I tell ya. When are we finally going to get equal time in the summer for the rest of the animal kingdom? – Gord the Gorilla A. In the next few minutes, Gordo. I don’t want to
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY let the cat out of the bag, but a little bird told me that by the end of the column all will be forgotten and you’ll be happy as a clam. Q. Do you really mean it, Jamie? I’ve had ants in my pants over this since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. – Karina the Kangaroo A. Cross my heart. This comes straight from the horse’s mouth. Q. Wait a minute. I thought you just got through saying it was a bird that gave you the news. This all sounds rather fishy if you ask me. – Arnold the Armadillo A. Don’t get your feathers in a bunch. The horse called first. The bird tweeted right after. OK? Q. Jamie, do you mind if I talk turkey for a second?
– Penelope the Peacock A. Would you be a lamb and try back around Thanksgiving? I promised to resolve this dog days of summer controversy before the end of the column. If I don’t do it, I have a hunch I’ll be hearing about it until the cows come home. Q. You’ll be hearing about it long after they arrive, too. No other animals can get on the map this time of year. It’s the nature of the beast, I’m afraid. Don’t you think it’s time to accept that you’re barking up the wrong tree? – Zoe the Zebra. A. On the contrary, I was about to pull a rabbit out of a hat here. Anything is possible. All you have to do is believe. Q. Yeah and pigs might fly, too. Sorry, but I’m with Zoe on this. – Wally the Walrus A. Boo hoo. I’m crying crocodile tears. I hate to break it to the two of you,
but it’s all just water off this duck’s back. I guarantee you’ll both be eating crow. But it’s not up to me. I’ll leave the deciding vote to the final questioner of the day. Q. I believe. I believe. I believe. Now, with that out of the way, let’s get to the most important part of this discussion. After I’m done eating, any chance of going back for seconds? As far as I’m concerned one can never get enough crow and you can see by my attached selfie that I’m a growing boy. – Harvey the Hippotamus A. That I can, and thanks for tipping the scales in my favour. But as for the extra helping? Well, I wouldn’t count my chickens before they hatch if I were you. Fight against McNicoll Bus Garage expected to continue Full review sought at ‘all levels of government’ mike adler madler@insidetoronto.com Opponents of the McNicoll Bus Garage say they’ll keep fighting it, even though Ontario’s environment ministry approves of the project. A coalition against the garage said Friday it will continue “to ensure the health, safety and well-being of our neighbourhood and our community is not compromised and that a better location for the proposed garage is found.” not clear It’s not clear now how those goals could be accomplished, though the group, in a statement signed by Richard Leung, a member, said it will seek “a full review”
of the garage “at all levels of government.” Toronto council and the TTC have approved the facility, and on Monday, a spokesperson said Minister Glen Murray, having seen the TTC’s environmental project report, is letting it go ahead. Badly needed The transit authority says the garage north of McNicoll Avenue and east of Kennedy Road, which could store and service 250 buses at a time, is badly needed. The ministry said the TTC will put measures in place to protect air quality and control noise from the garage, and added it’s satisfied the facility’s effect on the neighbourhood “would be minimal,” and any adverse impacts on
human health “would be unlikely.” Negative impacts But the coalition maintained the garage will bring “serious negative impacts upon the community” and is being approved against the wishes of area residents. Group members have called the immediate area “the McNicoll Seniors Corridor,” because it contains a Mon Sheong home and other buildings with retirees. The TTC has said it will start construction next year and open the garage in 2019.

TDSB board chair Chen steps down for federal race CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Scarborough-Rouge River Trustee Shaun Chen announced his resignation as chair of the Toronto District School Board ( TDSB) on Tuesday after the writ was dropped this past Sunday by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, which triggered a federal election campaign. Chen will be running as a Liberal candidate in the new federal riding of Scarborough North. “It’s really been a pleasure to work with this new board of trustees,” said
AUGUST 31ST
Chen, calling this past year a time of transformation at the board. “We approved a new whistleblower policy, reduced trustee discretionary expenses by over 55 per cent and became the first Ontario school board to establish an integrity commissioner.” Wi t h C h e n s t e p p i n g down, TDSB Vice-Chair and Beaches-East York Trustee Sheila Cary-Meagher will serve as acting chair until trustees meet in the near future to select a new chair. Chen noted he will also be taking a leave of absence as the Scarborough-Rouge River
(Ward 21) school trustee and not accepting any salary from the TDSB as he focuses on campaigning for the upcoming federal election on Oct. 19. Kicking into campaign mode, Chen said one of the concerns he’s already heard from constituents in the diverse riding of Scarborough North is a lack of opportunity and support for young people to get good jobs. “There needs to be change not only in Toronto but across the country,” he said. “We need a national education plan that enables our young people to be successful.”

Woman, 83, pulled from pool dies of heart attack in hospital ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
An 83-year-old Scarborough woman who was pulled from her backyard pool during the lunch-hour last Wednesday has died. Police said the senior went into distress while in the pool after her husband of 62 years went inside the house, on Meldazy Drive near McCowan Road and Lawrence Avenue, around 12:30 p.m. on July 29. “Her husband had been
with her all morning and only stepped into the house to make them a sandwich for lunch,” said Insp. Art Little of 43 Division. “She came into distress and there was nobody immediately handy, but the neighbours did hear her calls for help, and the response was immediate.” The neighbours called 911, and police, paramedics and firefighters were dispatched. Paramedics jumped into the pool and pulled the senior
out. “It was a solid emergency response,” Little said. Paramedics revived the woman and took her to hospital where she suffered a heart attack and died late Wednesday night. “It’s not being treated as a suspicious death,” Little said. The inspector noted the elderly couple had had the pool for more than 40 years. A Toronto Police spokesperson said the victim’s family “wishes privacy on this matter.”

Van crashes through Variety Village wall Variety Village’s weight room has been closed since a van drove through the north wall of the recreation centre Friday and caught fire. “It was bizarre. It looked photoshopped,” Lynda Elmy, a Variety spokesperson said of the July 31 accident’s aftermath. “We’re just grateful that there were no injuries.” People were using the
weight room at the Danforth Avenue facility at the moment of the crash, but thankfully none were along the north wall, she said Tuesday. Elmy said a staff member put out the fire with an extinguisher, and another pulled a woman out of the driver’s seat. She was taken to hospital, in shock. Variety hopes to have a wooden structure in place
around the hole by Thursday or Friday, so members can use what’s left of the room while repairs take place. Some pieces of equipment along the wall were “definitely destroyed” in the crash, said Elmy. Variety is still hosting a celebration event this Friday morning which is part of the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games Torch Relay.
Staffing increase for Scarborough Veterans Affairs office announced Scarborough’s office of Veterans Affairs Canada will get 10 more employees over the next seven months. The staffing increase, announced in person recently by Federal Veterans Affairs Minister Erin O’Toole and praised by an advocate for troubled veterans, are part of what the Conservative government calls a “commitment to service excellence” for veterans and surviving family members. In a release, the government said there will be 83 new hires in Ontario by the end of March 2016, including 52 case managers and 31 processing disability benefits. Before this, the Conservatives were criticized for cutting frontline VAC staff as numbers of veterans receiving disability benefits from VAC and those diag-
nosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder increased dramatically. Once the hiring is done, case managers will handle no more than 30 individuals each, and “will have more time to address the complex needs of veterans,” Veterans Affairs said. “This means veterans will have faster access to disability benefits as well as health care funding and mental health treatment.” Also at the announcement was Fred Smith, who suffered from PTSD and was homeless after leaving the military in 1981. Later, Smith, who founded Veterans Helping Veterans to get vulnerable veterans the help they need, said adding more VAC frontline staff means “more opportunity to save the lives and change the
lives” of vets who are homeless today. “The cup is fuller. It’s still half-way full,” the Milton man said Thursday, but added VAC has improved its service and vets who reach out for help can get it. The Scarborough VAC office, which is located on Town Centre Boulevard, will get three more disability benefits staff, five additional client service agents and two additional case management education and training personnel. The department will also hire two case managers to work elsewhere in Toronto. VAC provides disability benefits to about 180,000 people veterans and surviving family members, serving armed forces personnel, and former and serving RCMP members.

StArt youth arts fest set for Scarborough Village Angeline Mair amair@insidetoronto.com Scarborough youth will have the opportunity to speak to the community – through their art – at the fifth annual StArt YPA Festival Aug. 11 to 15 at Scarborough Village Theatre. Denyse Matthews, director StArt YPA Festival, said participants come together to share and create. “When they come, they get to experience art from the eyes of different people and different cultures. This creates a community feeling. And that’s what’s important,” she said. “This is a totally inclusive event. The youth come from all areas of Scarborough.” StArt YPA Festival is a SuiteLife Arts for Youth initiative and Matthews said it’s truly becoming a youth

led event. There are workshops from Aug. 11 to 14 with the festival taking place Aug. 15 at Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd. Each year the festival continues to add new elements. This year, there are two new workshops: business for the arts and stage management. Matthews said the business workshop is an essential tool for young artists to help
them have a sustainable life in the arts. “We think it’s really important that young people learn how to promote themselves and have an online presence and be able to sustain themselves through their art.” The other new offering is in stage management, which is in partnership with Theatre Scarborough and Recipes for Community. “It gives young people the skills to be in the production end of any kind of performance or exhibition.” The workshop runs from Aug. 11 to 14 with the finale being the Aug. 15 festival where the youth will put the skills they have learned to the test, said Matthews. The City of Toronto is holding an adoption blitz to help residents find furry feline friends. Until Aug. 31, it is lowering adoption fees for cats and kittens from $75 to $25, plus a $15 pet license fee ($7.50 for seniors). All felines come vaccinated, vet-checked, de-wormed, micro-chipped, and spayed or neutered. The adoption campaign aims to help ease the influx of shelter animals during warmer months, when more breeding occurs. Cats and kittens are available from the city’s animal shelters and adoption partners. Please visit www.toronto.ca/animalservices for locations.

Skateboard battle set for Malvern One of Malvern’s ice rinks isn’t an ice rink right now - it’s a skateboard park. And this Saturday, Aug. 8, local youth will celebrate that fact by staging a skateboard battle there. The competition will last from noon to 6 p.m. and include a free barbecue and live art, said the Malvern Family Resource Centre. The agency says it worked with teachers, the city’s recreation department and others to re-purpose Arena #2 (Blue) at the Malvern Community Recreation Centre, which is decommissioned over this summer, into “Scarborough’s first indoor skateboard facility.” The recreation centre is at 30 Sewells Rd. LIBERTY VILLAGE AT IT’S BEST
Why choose a realtor? part of the Ontario Real Estate Association, real estate agents and realtors must take courses in real property law. A realtor will know the difference between owning a single-family home, semi-detached or townhouse versus a condominium. For example, a condo owner is called a “strata title” meaning you own not only your condo unit, but also have shared ownership with other owners of the common property in and around the building. A realtor can help determine not only your type of ownership, but also, obtain the prospectus, which provides details of the vendor, the financial history, the details of the common facilities and services, property management contracts, unit entitlement, and parking, prior to making the purchase. Realtors will also help you look into bylaws to determine if you can rent your property or turn your single-family home into an income property. Once the offer is agreed upon and signed by both the buyer and seller, it becomes a binding and enforceable contract, which is where your realtors legal knowledge comes in. If either party breaks any of their promises negotiated in the contract, the other party may take legal action. Should an unforeseen event take place, a realtor will be insured against an impending lawsuit. When it comes to buying and selling, having a realtor on your side helps the paperwork, from making the offer to completing the sale, go smoothly.

A realtor knows the ins and outs of negotiating and the legal matters, to make buying and selling easier After a seemingly endless string of open houses that didn’t quite meet your expectations, you’ve finally found the one. The house you want to make your home. While you may already be picturing yourself in the house, you still need to make an offer that the seller will accept. From price negotiations to signing on the dotted line, completing the sale is much easier when you’ve got a realtor on your side. When it comes to making an offer, a realtor will have market information, such as selling prices of homes in the area. With this information, a realtor will be able to tell you if the house if overvalued, undervalued, and what an appropriate offer would be. A realtor can prepare the offer and walk you through all of the terms you may not know, such as the purchase price, the deposit, which chattels and fixtures are included, as well as the all-important completion date, when you can move in. On the other side of the deal, realtors help sellers determine the price to put their home on the market. Sellers will supply their clients with all the information to come up with an ideal selling point, and once the offers come in the realtor will help devise a negotiation strategy based on market supply, demand and the conditions stated in the offer. In either situation, having a realtor on your side, who is trained in negotiating, is the best strategy to getting the deal you’re looking for. Not only are realtors trained in negotiating, as

TTC ponders fare hike to offset budget shortfall DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com T h e To r o n t o Tr a n s i t Commission’s long-held $3 adult cash fare could be among the fares to rise in 2016, as the commission’s budget committee asked for a report including that and other options last week. The fare hike would help deal with a $99 million shortfall that’s predicted for 2016 — soaking up about $30 million of that. Report sought The committee is asking for the report to look at a number of scenarios, including hiking Metropass fares and having the fare increase entirely borne by the cash fares, as well as simply spreading the fare increase across various media. It will also study the impact
that the Presto fare card will have on fare structure once it’s implemented at the end of 2016. TTC Commissioner and city councillor Joe Mihevc, who sits on the commission’s budget committee, said it will be a “very, very delicate issue.”
of the tunnel it is the Presto card, which will be solidly in place by the end of next year,” he said. “You can raise fares by two cents if you want to take it from the Presto card. That will allow for more variability.”
‘Difficult’
Mihevc said that he hasn’t given up hope on persuading Toronto council to increase its subsidy to the TTC, and somewhat fainter hope in convincing the provincial government to fund the TTC operations. “But when the province and the city weigh in there are only two strategies left — one is to raise fares, and one is to cut service,” he said.
“It is true that many people from vulnerable communities find three dollars hard enough in and of itself — and you can’t raise it 10 cents, you’ve got to raise it at least a quarter. And yet raising it is a damn difficult thing to do.” Mihevc said that at the same time, raising the fares on tokens and Metropasses can’t bring them too close to the cash fare, or people will simply start paying cash. “If there is a light at the end

City parks are no place for foragers DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Picking a batch of mushrooms from one of Toronto’s parks could add an exotic accent to a steak dinner. Depending on the mushroom you pick, that dinner could also send you on a hallucinogenic spiral, throw you into a seizure, send your blood-pressure soaring or, worst-case scenario, put you on a short list for a liver transplant. And other supposedly edibles that are found in the city’s ravines and forested areas aren’t much safer, according to Dr. Margaret Thompson, medical director at the Ontario Poison Centre. According to Thompson, the poison centre hears from about 250 people who’ve had a bad experience with foraged mushrooms, and many

These Ontario mushrooms are safe for eating, but Dr. Margaret Thompson from the Ontario Poison Centre said the difference between a poisonous mushroom and an edible one requires a microscope.
more who have eaten something else that disagreed with them. It is all a matter of correctly identifying what you’re eating. The only trouble is, with Toronto’s diverse ecology, making that identification
can require a microscope and a professional. “We just want everybody to be aware that not all mushrooms are safe and it’s only a mycologist that might be able to determine the difference between a poisonous and non-poisonous mushroom, by looking at it under a microscope – some of them are so close in physical properties you can never be too safe.” Taking plants and other objects out of a park is prohibited in city bylaws and in addition to the risk to human health, doing so can disrupt often delicate ecosystems. Thompson said many people who forage do so because of a family tradition, a desire for exoticism or because they have come here from countries where foraging is more common.

Pan American Performance A parade and performance of Pan American dance and music was held in Scarborough recently. Clockwise from top: Members of Ballet Creole perform at Thomson Memorial Park during the J’ouvert Performance & Carnival along the Pan Am Path Saturday afternoon; Laura Surman, left, and her husband Steve Surman dance. The two have been participating in wheelchair dancing since February, but Steve is an avid sledge hockey and wheelchair basketball player; Candice McCavitt, an employee of the Scarborough Museum, dances to the music of Samba Squad and the Ontario Steelpan Association; Brendan Wildish juggles knives during the carnival event. Scarborough hosts trio of Parapan Am Games events aNDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
Wheelchair tennis athletes began practice this Monday at the University of Toronto Scarborough Tennis Centre in preparation for the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games competitions at the new facility, which will start on Saturday. The biggest challenge for organizers so far has been the weather: a downpour Tuesday wiped out some of the practice and the courts had to be dried before athletes were allowed back. New tennis centre University of Toronto Scarborough’s athletic director Scott McRoberts is running the wheelchair tennis event with the help of a 16-member committee made up of students and staff. “I’m very excited about having the Americas here at our brand new tennis centre, which will be post-games in legacy opened up to the community and our students, staff and faculty,” he said. The venue, at 131 Old Kingston Rd., currently has six courts but two additional courts will be installed after the games when the athletes’
trailers are removed. There are 500 seats at centre court with another 100 at the surrounding courts. McRoberts said the facility is fully accessible with wider gates and doors and is “surrounded by the natural beauty of the valley.” Rules for wheelchair tennis are the same as able-bodied tennis except that two bounces are allowed. USA led the medal haul at the 2011 Guadalajara games with Argentina coming in second and Colombia third. McRoberts said Canada has a shot at a medal, adding “it helps when you’re in your home country with your fans cheering you on.” Wheelchair tennis competitions run until Aug. 14. Scarborough is hosting two other Parapan Am competitions: swimming and sitting volleyball. Both take place between Saturday and Aug. 14 at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, also known as CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House. The facility, at 875 Morningside Ave., is jointly owned by the city and University of Toronto Scarborough.

Peking Opera workshop in Scarborough cancelled MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com
Photo/COURTESY
Traditional Chinese opera performer William Lau specializes in the Dan, the portrayal of the opera’s major female role.
A special summer experience for Scarborough children will have to wait. Peking Opera instructor William Lau had hoped to teach basics of the art form to young people of different cultures at Scarborough’s Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, but his nineday workshop earlier this summer was cancelled. The problem may have been timing, or possibly the growing disinterest which Peking Opera – precise, symbolic, stylized, steeped in its traditions – has faced in the last few decades. It’s up to people like William Lau, who emigrated to Canada from Hong Kong at age 12, to demystify the classical form so it can be
expressed, he said, in a Canadian context. “The audience has changed. The artists have changed,” Lau added from Ottawa last week. “It has to be relevant for today’s audience. Otherwise it will be obsolete.” Inspired by masters of Peking Opera’s golden age such as Mei Lanfang, Lau is well aware today’s potential patrons have many choices for entertainment. Most, he added, also have less time to sit through a fourhour full-length show. But Lau is convinced he can make Peking Opera – better described as “the theatre of the capital,” which includes singing, dancing, and sometimes acrobatics – more accessible for Canadians of all backgrounds. Already, he’s been in new
productions, such as The Lesson of Da Ji, which are not Peking Opera but use some of its elements. It is parts of Peking Opera’s “vocabulary” – the singing technique, the hand gestures, how fighting is portrayed on stage – which Lau wanted to teach a workshop of “multicultural youth” of ages 10 to 13. “It’s not just a show. It’s a make up demonstration, a costume exhibition,” he added. Lau, who has done such workshops before at Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum and Harbourfront, said there will be other opportunities at CCCGT. “I think next year they will try again.” Like Mei, the performer who set the standard, Lau chose early in his career to
study the dan, or female role, and returns to China each year to study with masters of different schools. Of course you never reach perfection, Lau said, “but the pursuit of it is part of the journey.” A Peking Operea performance, he said, is successful when it touches you, when you can see beyond the beauty of costume or makeup to feelings which are universal. If Lau is performing a river scene, and pantomiming a boat, can his audience see the boat? If he is portraying a drunken concubine on stage, he asked, “are you convinced that I was drunk. If not, I’m not successful.”
