Scrap LRT plan, build Sheppard subway: local BIA MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com

In a move likely to draw political attention, a Scarborough BIA said some of its members want

the Sheppard East Light-Rail Transit line shelved again in favour of a subway extension. The Sheppard East Village Business Improvement Area released results of a transit

questionnaire to which a small number of its members – 27 out of 704 – responded. Merchants along the BIA’s stretch of Sheppard, from Midland Avenue to Markham

Road, have fought before over the issue. Supporters of a Sheppard subway extension rejoiced in 2010 when newly-elected Mayor >>>SHEPPARD, page 13

Seeing the opportunity in an unused accessible space, MFRC program director Alex Dow thought it was a perfect way to offer Scarborough youth a safe and secure park at minimal cost. “I spoke with Toronto Parks and Recreation and learned that Malvern’s two ice rinks have the ice taken out of them for about four months a year,” Dow said. “It leaves a really smooth pad of concrete. So I had an idea that we might be able to use this ice rink in the summer for >>>POPULARITY, page 13

Jazz festival begins tomorrow Sloth honoured Mark A. Cadiz mcadiz@insidetoronto.com Scarborough transforms into a cultural hotspot this weekend as it welcomes some of the most talented and upand-coming musicians for an all out jazzfest. The Scarborough Town Jazz Festival joins forces with local talents and artists from around the world this weekend celebrating plenty of music styles for everyone. Festival director of the Scarborough Town Jazz Festival, Mario Bullin has been leading the charge the last four years trying to produce a great music event for the community bringing in 30 bands composed of 136 artists. “We have an exciting program this year and we are creating a festival where people can enjoy world class performances right here in Scarborough,” Bullin said. A major initiative the festival focuses on is providing a springboard for young emerging artists to showcase their music, which artists see as important to the grassroots level in the music community. Multi-award winning and Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Hilario Duran will be one of the major headline acts this year. From his experience in Cuba and Canada, he understands the importance of giving back to the next generation of music artists. “The jazz festival is very important for young artists and I’m very happy the festival is dedicated to giving space and providing an opportunity for them to play,” Duran said. When asked what advice he would give young artists Duran simply said they have to truly believe in what

they are doing and feel good about it - adding that it’s the most important thing for an artist. Festival supporter and Scarborough-Guildwood MPP Mitzie Hunter thinks the festival is huge for artists, presenting an opportunity for them to gain support from their communities. Cultural fusion “I know Scarborough is the perfect place for the festival. The cultural fusion here is unique and bringing different types of music together, different instruments, musicians and different cultural backgrounds is important,” she said. “I think that represents the Scarborough community.” Bu t i t h a s n’t a l w a y s been an easy task to draw Torontonians to one of the city’s most diverse neighbourhoods. The festival has struggled to bring in large crowds, but Bullin remains optimistic and up for the challenge. This year Bullin has teamed

up with music and public relation professionals to help foster the growth of the festival, especially leading up to the 2015 Pan American Games. On the upswing Bullin has seen a dramatic interest from bands in the United States; unfortunately the festival still wasn’t at a level to accommodate them. By next summer Bullin hopes the festival will be in a position to do just that. “My dream for the festival is for it to become a world-class event where the Scarborough community can enjoy worldclass performances.” The festival runs along with the Toronto Hakka Heritage Alliance and the TO Food Fest so expect diverse culinary dishes, dance, arts and crafts on-site, too. Other headliners in this year’s music line-up include multiple Juno award-winner and Toronto’s own Liberty Silver, CJC Caribbean Jazz, aQwa and Pablo Terry & Sol de Cuba along with many more artists. Concerts are being held

this Friday through to Sunday at the Scarborough Civic Centre’s Albert Campbell Square and at the Burrows Hall Community Centre Park near the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto at Sheppard and Progress avenues which is hosting Scarborough Summerfest events. The Summerfest is in many ways, four festivals in one. as it includes the above mentioned events. Summerfest itself will see multicultural events, from Friday through Sunday. Most of the events are free, though some indoor events require tickets. The Hakka Festival will be telling the story of 50,000 Greater Toronto residents whose ancestors left China for countries such as Malaysia, Trinidad, Jamaica, Mauritius and India. “The Hakka Chinese are the Chinese who went overseas,” said Carol Wong . – with files from Mike Adler

Last year’s winners included the founder of a local basketball league, a football coach, the Friends of the Rouge Watershed and the Guild Festival Theatre Group. Those awards were presented at a gala celebration last fall in Scarborough, and we’re doing it again this year. The Scarborough Urban Hero Awards for 2014 will be presented on Oct. 21. Nominations are now open, and we need your help to find this year’s nominees. Please go online to submit nominations for those special members of our community who deserve to be honoured. Individuals, groups and businesses can be nominated in any of six categories: Arts and Culture, Community, Education, Environment, Health and Sciences, and Sports. Deadline for nominations for this year’s Scarborough Urban Hero Awards is Sept. 15 at 5 p.m. We ask our readers to please visit www.urbanheroes.ca to access the nomination form, learn more about the Urban Hero Awards program, the rules and categories. This baseball playoff race is good stuff

W

ith the Toronto Blue Jays a legitimate playoff contender, be prepared to hear the phrase “good stuff” after every game. A lot. Jays’ commentators and broadcasters will be using it regularly as long as the club remains in the hunt. The expression is in reference to the performance of the starting pitcher that day or night. If he is said to have had his good stuff it means the guy on the mound was in command of all his pitches, which is bad news for the hitters. But the news can be just as bad for the guys in the batters’ box when it comes to the top throwers, even when they don’t have their good stuff. You see, what separates them from the rest of the pack is that they often win even when they have, say, just decent stuff. Or mediocre stuff. Heck, even so-so stuff. Somehow, even when nowhere near their best, the great ones are able to

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY battle away and hang in long enough to give their team a chance to win. It’s truly something to see. Anyhow, as the playoff race heats up, all this talk about good stuff – and occasional lack of it – always gets me thinking about this stuff stuff. You never hear about a catcher having good stuff. Ditto infielders or outfielders. Or designated hitters. Or managers or first and third base coaches. Or ball boys and ball girls. Or mascots, either. Umpires and referees are regularly told to get stuffed, but they don’t have good stuff. When it comes to baseball, good stuff appears to be something only a person on the mound has, or doesn’t have, depending on the outing. In fact, if you look

around in the sports world, good stuff is a pretty scarce commodity in general. Take basketball. NBA players like to stuff, but nobody talks about them having good stuff. NHL players have been known to partake in the rough stuff, but nobody ever says any of them have good stuff. teams

You often hear of teams in fledgling football leagues having their stuff repossessed – occasionally when their players are still wearing it – but do they have good stuff? No way, Jose. The list is long. There is no mention of golfers having good stuff, or tennis players having good stuff, or soccer players having good stuff. Sumo wrestlers regularly eat a lot of stuff, but when was the last time you heard any of them having good stuff?

Good stuff is the domain of pitchers and pitchers alone and is possessed by only a select few. As a writer, I often daydream about what it would be like to have good stuff, if only for one glorious column. But after watching the great pitchers of the game strut their stuff over the years, even on nights when their good stuff tank was running on empty, truth is, I’d be happy to have just their ordinary stuff or runof-the-mill stuff, or nothing to write home about stuff, for that matter, if I could perform the magic they the do with such regularity. Because let’s face it, anyway you slice it, stuff like that is the stuff of which legends are made. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. Position on Rob Ford and protesters wishful thinking

Running without name recognition

M

ayoralty candidates – at least some of them – get a lot of attention in Toronto municipal elections, and rightly so: the choice Torontonians make for mayor sets the future direction of the city more than any single vote. But there are 44 other elections taking place – and some of those elections are more important than others. In 2010, the Ford administration wouldn’t be what it became if Doug Ford hadn’t stepped in to hold onto the Ward 2 Etobicoke North seat after Rob Ford left it, to take the mayoralty. Like too many other wards with well-known incumbents, Ward 2 has become a stronghold... not for an individual – but a family, the Ford family which has held it for 14 years. And Doug is so confident in its strength that he’s suggested his young nephew and intended successor Michael Ford need not even do interviews to take on the job. The brand in Rexdale is that strong. Actually, it may not be

david nickle the city that strong. The Ford brothers have done much to dismantle their city-wide brand, and more to the point – motivate some fairly sophisticated opposition both city wide and more importantly in the ward. That is where Andray Domise comes into the picture. A financial advisor and writer who spent his childhood in Rexdale and lives in Etobicoke now, the 33-yearold African-Canadian has been offering up a pointed critique of the Ford brand in terms of its bedrock support in north Etobicoke and among African-Canadian young people. He took on the idea of a Ford stronghold directly in a conversation that took place just prior to Michael Ford registering. “The whole thing has to do with anger and resentment,” he said. “A lot of sup-

port comes from people who feel disconnected and cut off from Toronto’s political establishment. You can see, looking around Etobicoke neighbourhoods, why people get the impression that nobody cares – all they have is half-finished projects and empty promises. If you can’t rely on people who represent you to get the job done, you’re going to end up rallying around somebody who is going to capture all that anger and resentment and passion.” Domise is also, of course, just a candidate right now – one of 13 running in Ward 2, and one of 12 without the advantage of name recognition, and by no means established to be the best choice among them. So his plans to turn Ward 2 from stronghold to freehold might be premature. But he is running a campaign that at least indicates a sense of the stakes on Oct. 27, both for city and for community.

i

To the editor: Re: ‘Ford, hecklers need to stick city’s issues,’ Editorial, July 24. Your editorial is really wishful thinking. Mayor Rob Ford has brought the protests upon himself by his crude and rude behaviour, aided and abetted by his enabler, brother Doug Ford. How many times, when other candidates speak to the issues, do you notice candidate Ford is silent, missing in action, running from the media or hiding in his office while Doug acts as

though he is the mayor? On those infrequent occasions when Rob isn’t incommunicado, he proves he has no grasp of most of the issues. He blathers on about the illusionary money he’s saved taxpayers. He takes credit for accomplishments he had little or nothing to do with, or actually opposed in council. He tries to buy our votes by giving us a hot dog and some music in a public park, one of the oldest political tricks in the book. What goes around, comes

around. The people protesting at his appearances wouldn’t normally get up off their c o u c h e s t o h a ra n g u e anyone, but they’ve had it up to here with a mayor who just doesn’t have the tools for the job, or the respect for the people of Toronto. If the protesters are drowning out the mayor’s message there’s no real harm done because when Rob Ford speaks, nothing worth listening to is said. Terry Kushnier

Ford made campaign about personal issues To the editor: Re: ‘Ford, hecklers need to stick to city’s issues,’ Editorial, July 24. I understand the frustration and exasperation expressed in your editorial calling on Mayor Rob Ford and those who constantly heckle him to stick to city issues. You point out what’s needed is discus-

Y

oung Scarborough artists are joining forces to present an artistically diverse arts festival. The StArt Youth Presenting Art Festival begins this Saturday at noon at the Scarborough Village Theatre and Recreation Centre. For the fourth year in a row, the festival offers performances and exhibits created by Scarborough youth. StArt is an initiative led by youth from SuiteLife Arts for Youth, a program com-

mitted to helping young artists in Scarborough develop their talents. The founders are a team of 13 young artists with diverse cultural backgrounds and talents. Diversity “You can look forward to this festival because it’s one of the few places in Scarborough in the summertime where you can get the diversity in culture and youth,” said founding member Travoy Deer. “We’re all coming from different places and different backgrounds. And it’s here, one spot, one

local space and everyone’s welcome and everyone’s invited.” The performances and exhibits include: acting, singing, dance, music, spoken word, short films, sculptures, fine arts, photography, jewelry, henna and more. The festival offers a platform for young and talented artists to demonstrate their abilities in front of an audience.

Over the past four years, Denese Matthews, director of SuiteLife Arts for Youth, has seen constant growth among the young artists. “They are more responsible and their art is improving,” she said. “This year we’re giving out honorariums to let people know that we feel they’re doing really well.” SuiteLife Arts for Youth aims to help youth develop skills they would otherwise

overlook. Given what the program perceives as education gaps, it’s objective is to provide Scarborough youth opportunities to develop their skills in a creative setting. On top of creating their own work, artists are given instruction in many different artforms. Matthews explores the skills that young artists learn with the program and with StArt. “They learn about arts education, volunteering, employment opportunities, networking and collaboration with professionals,” she said.

“It’s nice to see the sparkle in their eyes, they’re growing and they’re more confident, they’ve met friends that they didn’t think they had. It just grows,” she added. The Scarborough Mirror has been a strong supporter of the festival since its inception. The Scarborough Village Theatre and Recreation Centre is at 3600 Kingston Rd. Admission is free for everyone. 509 streetcars returning soon TTC streetcar service will finally return to Harbourfront this fall. Over the last two years, the 509 Harbourfront route running between Union Station and the Exhibition Loop has used replacement buses while the existing streetcar corridor along Queens Quay was relocated and completely rebuilt. The 509 streetcar was supposed to have returned to service last summer, but the schedule was pushed back to July of this year, and then to the end of August. The TTC blames the delay on issues with water and sewer main replacements Waterfront Toronto was to have completed before the corridor rebuild could commence. Waterfront, in turn, said the harsh winter delayed its construction schedule. The TTC says streetcars will return to the 509 service as of Sunday, Oct. 12.

Starter Company program helps young entrepreneurs MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Danielle Knoll and Vital, two young musical performers schooled inside a former convent in Scarborough, know an opportunity when they see one. Their business cards – covered with addresses usable for bookings and social media platform pages – bear this out, as did their polished performances in front of Toronto journalists recently at Coalition Music. Knoll, 21, and Vital, 19, whose real name is Hiruy Girmay, were both quick to get photos of themselves with Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, who was visiting the incubator of musical talent in the Wexford Heights area to launch the city’s participation in Starter Company, a provincial grant program for young entrepreneurs. Young recording artists are “no different than any traditional business that is getting started,” said Coalition

co-founder Eric Lawrence, who along with partner Rob Lanni transformed the onetime religious building four years ago into a studio space where, each year, “up to 80 businesses are registered.” The City of Toronto’s Enterprise Toronto service will work with Coalition and other incubators on Starter Company, which could give 45 entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 29 advice

on starting a business from mentors, and then grants of up to $5,000. It’s the latest thing the city is doing to help young people get jobs and start careers, said Michael Thompson, Toronto’s economic development chairperson for the past four years. “If you succeed today, we all succeed tomorrow,” he said from the stage at the press conference, adding it’s

Whether the city is doing all it can is debatable, considering Toronto’s 18.1-percent rate of youth unemployment, but Thompson said city hall has managed to take 30,000 residents off the social assistance roll, “an amazing feat,” during this term, and is spending more on the arts per person than ever. To r o n t o’s b u s i n e s s improvement areas and its Fashion Incubator are ideas so successful they’re being copied in other cities around the world, added the Scarborough Centre councillor. “We’re exporting a lot of things that we do because we’re doing it extremely well.” Ford, who has been hammered by one of his opponents, Olivia Chow, on the issue of youth unemployment

since returning to the mayoral race a month ago, said Starter Company and the Ontario Youth Jobs Strategy will fill an essential role. Youth need all the support they can get in finding and creating work for themselves, the mayor said. “As a small-business man myself, I understand the challenges,” Ford added, pointing out nearly half of new enterprises do not last five years. He also said he remembered Vital was a great basketball player in high school. “There’s something about athletics and music that mixes,” he concluded. Vital, who lives in Pickering b u t a t t e n d e d We x f o rd Collegiate School for the Arts, got the audience clapping with his track, Tokyo, for which he recently shot a video in Japan. He’s now pushing through social media to get Tokyo some radio play while working on his second album. He joined Coalition’s

A N N UA L MA S S FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED

Artist Entrepreneur Program in 2012, and recalled that, besides helping him with creative matters, it gave him business skills he was lacking, such as budgeting and setting personal goals. Knoll, whose song, This War, got a “wow” from Thompson, was a participant in the Coalition program last year. She said that it helped her grow at a time, she said, when “you don’t really know what you’re supposed to be doing; you just love doing it.” The Richmond Hill resident, “trying to get my name out there,” is moving to downtown Toronto, and just released a first album. Besides Starter Company, the city also takes applications for Summer Company, grants of up to $3,000 for high school and university students who want to start businesses over the summer.

Sheppard Village BIA poll adds to LRT/subway debate >>>from page 1 Rob Ford cancelled the LRT project, which likely would have been running today had

construction continued. Later, city council changed its mind, but construction of the LRT from Don Mills to

Conlins Road was delayed until 2017. About 70 per cent of those BIA members answering the

Popularity of skateboarding soaring >>>from page 1 four months and turn it into a skate park.” “Instead of having dead space in the recreation centre we can have a vibrant space where youth can come together,” he added. Dow got the idea after consulting a youth group from Lester B. Pearson Collegiate Institute that wanted to start a skateboard club. He decided to leverage some funding for the community but the challenge of building an outdoor skate park proved daunting. Large projects like a skateboard park involve a lot of work and take a very long time to get started, Dow said. The aim shifted to creating it at a smaller scale but still meet the needs of the growing skateboarding community

in Malvern and surrounding areas. However, funding was still required. “We spoke with United Way, a supporter of our agency,” Dow said. “We received a $5,000 resident action grant, a grant for community members who want to try an innovative idea.” The City of Toronto assisted Dow and MFRC in a significant partnership between the city and a community. After receiving a minor recreation grant of $50,000, Dow hired part-time staff to get the project started and work with youth. The summer effort culminated in the creation of an indoor skate park with obstacles, ramps, rails, quarterpipes and more.

“Now everything is done and we want to open the doors to the wider community,” Dow said. “The youth have already been skating in the space since June after we got the initial setup done. The actual pieces inside the space were only finished recently so we’re having a big launch and festival to celebrate that.” The collaborative effort of MFRC, the city and Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation has yielded Scarborough’s third skate park. Popularity is soaring, Dow said, as youth who have never skateboarded can now use of the facility’s helmets, skateboards and instructors.

i

questionnaire, however, said they were opposed to the $1.1-billion project. Asked if they’d support a subway extension to McCowan Road instead of the LRT line, 56 per cent of those members agreed if the extra $2-3 billion cost of the subway was raised through municipal taxes, and 67 per cent approved when the cost was split between tax hikes and unspecified “tolls and

user fees.” An extension to McCowan was not proposed before, and hasn’t been studied or costed by the city, but it would meet the end of the proposed BloorDanforth Subway extension to Sheppard and McCowan. Ernie McCullough, the BIA’s executive director and part of an expert panel that helped city council choose the LRT over a proposed Sheppard extension to

Scarborough Town Centre in 2012, said agreement on the Bloor-Danforth extension by three governments, and council approval of tax hikes to pay for it, signalled “a major change in the whole system.” “We are a non-political body,” McCullough added on Tuesday. “It’s up to the politicians to say what is the best policy for our area.”

The festival is Aug. 9 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Malvern Community Centre, 30 Sewells Rd.

scarborough needs a tuberculosis clinic People who need specialized treatment for the disease don’t have to keep travelling downtown to get it, Toronto Public Health representatives told the area’s healthcare authority recently. “We absolutely see a need for it,” Dr. Elizabeth Rea, a TPH associate medical officer of health. Around 100 people become sick with tuberculosis in Scarborough every year. West Park, the sole clinic in Toronto treating drug-resistant forms of TB, is a long way from Scarborough, said Rea. The Scarborough Hospital came close to establishing a TB clinic in 2008, but the project disappeared when the hospital was put under temporary provincial supervision, Rea said.

Scarborough’s Bunting at Coyotes rookie camp NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Scarborough teenager Michael Bunting – a threetime athlete of the year recipient at Scarborough’s Blessed Cardinal Newman Catholic School – is getting used to taking his game to a whole new level. Literally. The swift rise of his hockey stock culminated in an exciting start to this summer – selected 117th overall in the fourth round of the National Hockey League draft in late June by the Arizona Coyotes, and then subsequently attending their rookie training camp. “Rookie camp was an experience I won’t forget,” he said in an email interview with The Mirror. “Just being at an NHL camp was a great experience in itself. I learned a lot and we had meetings every day about different things we will face in the NHL. “They showed me what

Blessed Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School alumnus Michael Bunting recently attened the Arizona Coyotes rookie camp. He was selected in the fourth round of the NHL draft, 117th overall, by the Coyotes.

it will take to make it and what I can do for myself to be able to make it to the next level.” The first day was a practice followed by two days of scrimmages – all in front of about 500 hockey-starved fans. “I felt when I left the camp I got a better view on what it is like to be playing

at the next level and I can’t wait to go back for camp in September.” He’s definitely used to moving up a level. Overlooked in the Ontario Hockey League draft for two years he finally made a very successful debut last season for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (who drafted him in the ninth

round – 160th overall – in the 2013 OHL priority draft). He made his OHL debut, having already graduated from Blessed Cardinal Newman. The previous season (2012/13), also marked a much-belated debut at the triple-A level (the highest level of boys’ youth club hockey) with the Don Mills Flyers midget team. Prior to that, he was content to play double-A hockey in Scarborough – three years for the Scarborough Young Bruins and prior to that three years with the Scarborough-based Toronto East Enders. Each new level required an adjustment, as he explains: “The biggest adjustment from AA to AAA was definitely the speed the players moved, the puck’s a lot quicker and the game was at a higher pace. “The biggest adjustment from AAA to OHL was the skill set and strength. I

wasn’t playing against kids anymore, every one was developed and everyone was trying to make the NHL so the pace was a lot faster and the skill was a lot better.” He listed a couple of reasons for staying at the ‘AA’ level for so many years. “I didn’t move up from AA because I was playing with a tight core of friends and had good coaches and I enjoyed playing there. “Also there was a financial issue for my family to move up from AA to AAA. AAA was at least a couple grand extra a year.” His late debut in the OHL did allow him to comlete a full – and successful – high school career where he played baseball, badminton, tennis and volleyball, in addition to hockey. “My favourite highlight for high school sports would have to be in Grade 12 when we won city’s for hockey and went to OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic

Associations),” he said. Growing up in the Pharmacy/St. Clair area of Scarborough, he also played other sports in the community when he was younger, including soccer and softball.

Scarborough Rotary Ribfest at Thomson Memorial Park DIG IN: Left, Li Ho Parker, left, and her husband Stephen enjoy some corn on the cob during the Scarborough Rotary Ribfest at Thomson Memorial Park on Sunday afternoon. The event is in its 13th year and has raised $850,000 for community and international projects. Above, Bibbs Bar-B-Q’s Olivia Crawford prepares its award winning rotisserie chicken and ribs. About 40,000 pounds of ribs and chicken are served each year as well as pulled pork at the event. Below, Bad Wolf B-B-Q’s Garett Duncan cooks up some rotisserie chicken. There were 11 award-winning professional ribber teams from across Canada and the United States plus other food vendors taking part at this year’s Scarborough Rotary Ribfest.
