Tamil Fest to highlight community’s vibrant culture Local residents can expect to be captured by a fusion of culture, music and cuisine with the upcoming Tamil Fest in Scarborough on Aug. 29 and 30. The festival will be a welcomed source of nostalgia and historical significance for the thriving 300,000 Tamil-Canadians who call the Greater Toronto Area home. “This will bring back old memories for a generation of people because they have been starving for a street fes-
tival like this for years since they immigrated to Canada,” said David Poopalapillai, the Canadian Tamil Congress spokesperson. The festival will provide a glimpse of the vibrant Tamil culture through dance performances that will weave the stories of Tamil history.
ability to tell stories about culture and religion, said Pararajasingam. Performing the folk and classical dance forms is important in ensuring the Tamil culture lives on, said Pararajasingam.

“We have a distance from India or Sri Lanka where those traditions were formed, so this is important,” she said. Pararajasingam’s mother, Nirothini teaches traditional Tamil dance to approximately 75 youth in Scarborough. Nirothini’s group of danc-

ers have spent countless grueling hours perfecting the art of various traditional dances including, Mayilaattam which is performed by girls, dressed as peacocks, Karakaattam which represents villagers praising the rain goddess (maari amman) and river goddess (gangai amman), and Puliyaattam which translates to ‘Tiger Dance’. For Nirothini, the power of traditional dance lies in its ability to encapsulate the Tamil culture and its values in a visual way. Teaching dance is her way of passing on those traditions to a younger generation in
the diaspora. “Everything has changed in Canada but the dance is the same as it is back home in India,” said Nirothini. The event will feature more than 20 food vendors spanning across the GTA who will showcase the flavours of Tamil cuisine. Children’s zone Amusement rides and a dedicated youth and children zone at the festival is set to ensure fun for all ages. “It’s a first street festival of its kind in Toronto for Tamils. Its important to promote the
richness of the culture,” said Dharshini Varapragasam, volunteer coordinator for the event. The event is slated for Saturday, Aug. 29 and Sunday, Aug. 30 from noon to 11 p.m. on both days. Tamil Fest will take place on Morningside Avenue between Finch Avenue and Neilson Road at 7610 Morningside Ave. For more information on the festival, please visit tamilfest.ca

Pay attention to federal campaign
A
federal election. Oh yes, almost forgot, didn’t you? It was an unusual (some would say cynical) move by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to drop the writ in the middle of the August long weekend – effectively extending the official campaign up to the Oct. 19 voting day by another few weeks. It’s understandably challenging, with weeks left in summer, for voters to begin pondering their choices. Moreso, even with a number of candidates already declared, the official cut-off date for nominations doesn’t arrive until late September. But here we are. For better or worse, the campaign is on. And for Toronto, in the midst of the typical rhetoric, mud-slinging and sloganeering that comes with any election campaign, residents must take a hard look at what the candidates and their parties vow to do for this city. Twenty-five of the our view 338 members of Parliament will be coming from Toronto. That’s a percentage – regardSpeak loudly significant less of party affiliation of its memon Toronto’s bers, Toronto’s representatives need to be vocal about the city’s priorities needs. So for residents, it’s worth paying attention to the campaign. For candidates, it’s worth crafting thoughtful, evidence-based platforms to address ongoing challenges the city faces. Hint: Transit comes to mind. This election will see a number of changes. Particularly downtown and in the north and eastern parts of the city, there are a number of boundary changes. This is brought about in part by the creation of new ridings including Don Valley North in North York, and Scarborough-Rouge Park and Scarborough North in Scarborough; Trinity-Spadina, downtown, has been replaced with University-Rosedale and Spadina-Fort York. Once a Liberal bastion federally, the city in 2011 saw a healthy mix of Liberal, NDP and Conservative candidates elected. It will be interesting to see if that trend continues. According to statistics from Elections Canada, the voter turnout in 2011 was 61.1 per cent, up from the historic low of 58.8 per cent in 2008, but still one of the lower voter turnouts in Canadian federal election history. That number needs to be higher. It may be the dog days of summer. There may be other things on your mind. Just remember that this is already ongoing.

column
OK...Blue Jays...let’s – talk – noise! When long-time Blue Jays radio announcer Jerry Howarth is calling a game, the moment the Jays start putting runs up on the board he gleefully exudes: “The Blue Jays are in flight.” Well, if he were commenting on the reaction of Jays fans to seeing the explosive firepower of the American League’s highest scoring team, “in flight” doesn’t go far enough. “In orbit” is more like it. And it’s not just runs that are igniting fan response lift off. Great plays in the field do it, too. So do stolen bases, strikeouts of an opposing batter, bullpen saves, walks, balks, you name it. Heck, fans are even going gaga over simple player introductions. Take the ones for fivetime all-stars, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and pitching ace David Price, who were recently acquired within 48 hours of each other just prior to the trade deadline. When they simply made their first appearance at the
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY plate and on the mound respectively, the Rogers Centre crowd erupted. My how times have changed, eh? Back in August 1992, prior to the Jays’ first World Series title, Dave Winfield made an impassioned plea to the oftdescribed reserved – as in audibly restrained – fan base to make noise. The 2015 version now screams at the drop of a hat. Or bat. Likely a rosin bag, too, the way things are going. The players are impressed and humbly appreciative. Price said it’s the best crowd he’s ever experienced. Reliever Mark Lowe, who just came over from the Seattle Mariners, knows first-hand that when the Jays play in Seattle, Jays fans out-scream the locals. While the decibel level around here has been
higher since the trade deadline acquisitions that also included left-fielder Ben Revere and reliever LaTroy Hawkins, the crowd has been rocking since the preseason began. Off-season pickup catcher Russell Martin was the recipient of several standing ovations in Montreal during a two-game exhibition series with the Cincinnati Reds. The other big name off-season addition, third baseman Josh Donaldson, for whom the crowd now chants “M-V-P”, has repeatedly brought the audience to its feet since opening day. The dazzling highlightreel catches by centre fielder Kevin Pillar have inspired the same mania, as have the slick defensive gems by second baseman Ryan Goins. The timely slugging of Chris Colabello and Justin Smoak has also not gone unnoticed. Nor has the inning-eating dependability of hurlers Mark Buehrle, R.A.
Dickey and Marco Estrada. The youthful relieving tandem of 23-year-old set-up man Aaron Sanchez and 20-year-old closer Roberto Osuna are also making hearts and vocal chords go pit-a-pat. When you add stalwarts Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion into the mix, it’s apparent there is something special going on. And this fandemonium is all just for the regular season. Imagine what the joint will sound like if they make it to the World Series. So, Dave Winfield, if you’re reading this and you’re coming to the Rogers Centre for the sold-out series with the Yankees this weekend, a word of warning. I wouldn’t bring my noise meter along, unless you’ve got a really good device insurance plan.

Parapan torch relay visits Variety Village LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com A sea of noisemakers and “Here to Cheer” pennants transformed the track at Scarborough’s Variety Village into a burning ring of fire, energy and spirit during the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am torch relay last Friday. Eight torchbearers walked or wheeled the flame around the recreation centre dedicated to helping people with disabilities achieve their life goals through sports, wellness and education. The Scarborough stop kicked off the fifth and final day of torch relay and brought the flame closer to its journey’s end at the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games Opening Ceremony taking place this evening at York University. Variety Village’s CEO John Willson said the Games are very close to the hearts of everyone working at the facility, and hopes the 160 summer camp students will be inspired by the athletes and high quality competitions. “Parapan Am athletes train just as hard, and are just as talented as Olympic athletes,” he said. “This will be a chance for Toronto to see that in a real and obvious way.” A chant of “Pa-chi! Pa-chi!” coaxed the official Games mascot out of hiding and onto the stage.

Paralympian David Wagner helps Nate Esott with wheelchair tennis at the Variety Village Parapan Am Torch Run celebration Friday.
The colourful porcupine started the celebration off by leading the crowd in a rousing rendition of his dance “the wiggle.” After stomping and shaking, spectators gathered to applaud the first torchbearer of the day, wheelchair tennis champion David Wagner. Wagner hails from California
and is ranked number one in Quad singles and Quad doubles in the world, based on the International Tennis Federation rankings. After becoming paralyzed from the mid-chest down in a surf accident in 2005, doctors told Wagner he would never play tennis again. During rehab, he regained his
strength and love for the sport and went on to win three gold, two silver, and one bronze Paralympic Games medals. The 41-year old will be competing in the Rio 2016 Paralympics next summer. Wagner was in Scarborough to coach wheelchair tennis camps at Variety Village through the Sports United Wheelchair Tennis Envoy program run by the U.S. Department of State. “The torch flame represents the unity of sport and touches the lives of all people, not just those involved in athletics,” he said. Sgt. James MacIntyre had his left leg amputated after enduring a serious injury while serving with the 3rd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment on deployment in Afghanistan in 2010. MacIntyre is now a spokesperson for Soldier On, a Canadian Armed Forces program that supports service personnel and veterans to overcome their physical or mental illness or injury through physical activity and sport. He took the torch from Wagner to begin his journey around the track. “As am amputee, this event is really close to my heart. The flame represents the drive and determination of athletes who have overcome obstacles,” he said. “It takes a lot
of hard work to compete at such a level.” Scarborough Southwest MPP Lorenzo Berardinetti took to the stage to thank the torchbearers and sponsors in attendance. “The torch is a symbol of energy, hope, pushing boundaries and never giving up,” he said. “When you carry the torch and feel the flame, you’re passing on ideals of community, participation and pride.” Variety Village’s director of access and awareness Archie Allison proudly carried the torch on its last lap. He has worked with the facility for 32 years and said it was amazing to see friends and family come “home” to witness the relay. “It was truly a great experience. I was very excited,” he said. Canada will welcome athletes from across the Americas to the Parapan Am Games with the cultural spectacle of the Opening Ceremony at the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium at York University Friday night. The ceremony was the final community destination of the torch relay, prior to last Friday night’s opening ceremonies of the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games at York University.

The Bay GO passenger concourse at Union Station is set to close starting Sunday for an extended amount of time so Metrolinx can complete extensive renovations. It will take two years before the work is done – yet another major project for riders to traverse through at Union – but Metrolinx is promising the finished product will offer more space plus connections to GO train platforms and direct access to Union’s new retail concourse level, which is expected to open next year. During the construction, GO riders will have to make use of the York concourse which opened back in April. Check out www.gotransit. com/bay ANNIVERSARY OF FATAL COLLISION wTRAIN
Tuesday marked a grim anniversary for the TTC when 20 years ago to the day a subway train derailed killing three passengers and injuring dozens more. The accident resulted
TO in TRANSIT when a subway train operated by a rookie driver did not heed signals to stop and slammed into the back of another train near Dupont Station. A subsequent investigation found a safety measure — intended to deploy emergency train brakes should a signal to stop be ignored — was defective. The accident resulted in multiple recommendations from Ontario’s coroner on improving TTC safety. The TTC is currently overhauling its entire signalling system on the Yonge-UniversitySpadina line to allow for automatic train operation. ART PROJECT SCREECHES TO A HALT wTRANSIT
Art in Transit is no more. The program showcased visual and multimedia artistic contributions from artists around the world, turning staid TTC subway station platforms into impromptu galleries. But the TTC’s advertising partner Pattison
Onestop announced it’s putting Art in Transit on hiatus after nine years of exhibitions. The Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF) also organized by Pattison, will return for its ninth year in September. FINAL PAN AM PATH ART SATURDAY wRELAY The Parapan Am Games are winding down, and with it the Pan Am Path Art Relay. The initiative allowed art lovers to cycle or walk to cultural happenings taking place along the multi-use path that opened before the Pan Am Games, linking 84 kilometres of trails in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. The relay was intended to showcase the creative output of artists in communities along the city portion of the path. The final Art Relay takes place Saturday starting at Rouge Beach. Freshly baked daily UTSC dean Halpern resigns Rick Halpern, vice-principal and dean of the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, resigned from his post late last month. His resignation, one year into a second five-year term, came after months of criticism directed at a UTSC course which was taught by his wife, Beth Landau-Halpern. Landau-Halpern is a homeopath, and her views, reflected in the materials for her alternative health course, were publicly questioned by U of T medical students and other academics. Though the course was later discontinued, Vivek Goel,

another U of T vice president, reviewed it and in June said he found Landau-Halpern’s approach to the subject of immunization - the benefits of which she disputes, despite a scientific consensus - “had not been unbalanced.” In reports of the criticisms of Landau-Halpern, her relationship to Halpern was often mentioned. The resignation announcement, made on Friday, July 31, and effective the next day, doesn’t say why Halpern, a historian specializing in modern U.S. history, left the post, but said he will return as a professor after an administrative leave.
Written by U of T Provost and UTSC Princial Bruce Kidd, the message said Halpern “led significant enrolment growth and innovative academic expansion” at UTSC during his six years as dean. “We owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for the astute and progressive leadership he gave to UTSC,” the announcement said. “He was deeply committed to the spirit of excellence through diversity and community engagement that characterizes UTSC.” The university said there will be news soon about plans to fill the position.

A smorgasbord of red and white clothing, flags, banners, and noise makers filled the stands inside Scarborough’s Aquatic Centre and Field House Monday evening as a preliminary round of men’s sitting volleyball saw Canada pitted against the United States – a team Canada must finish ahead of if they want a shot at competing at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. The Canuck team ended up falling to the Americans 25-21, 25-20, 25-18. A subsequent victory over Mexico Tuesday left Canada with a 2-2 record heading into yesterday’s (after The Mirror’s deadline) game against Colombia. A rematch against the U.S. today in the semifinals, a game they would have to win to keep their Rio hopes alive, is a strong possibility. Gold, bronze, and fifth-six place matches will be held Friday. Of the 11 Team Canada players, six were either part of the Canadian team that took home the bronze medals in the 2007 Rio or 2011 Guadalajara (or both) Parapan Am Games. And with four of the 11 players being current West Park Healthcare Centre amputation rehabilitation service/prosthetics and orthotics service patients – Jamoi Anderson, Jesse Buckingham, Jason Naval, and Andrew Tucker – a large contingent from the Weston Road and Jane Street rehabilitation and complex continuing care hospital came out Monday to cheer on their own. “We wanted to come out and celebrate,” Anne-Marie Malek, president and CEO of West Park, said during the tense match. “It’s absolutely amazing. Each one has their own personal story, and these are elite athletes. There is absolutely nothing stopping them from accomplishing their goal. They are doing us proud.” Proud was also how Jackie Hawrylowicz felt watching

i her son, Buckingham, on the court. When the 26-year-old lost his left leg in a construction accident in April 2014, he decided to focus on Paralympic sport and tried his hand at sitting volleyball for the first time that summer. He was named to the national team this past March. “I’m completely excited,” Hawrylowicz said as the teams were warming up. “I’m so proud.” D a n a D u g g a n d r ov e from Calgary to watch her son, Jesse Ward, play for Canada. “It’s exciting,” said Duggan, wrapped in Canada-themed plastic wrap and with red and white lighted streamers in her hair. “I’m nervous.” Ward, 23, was born missing several fingers on his left hand, part of his right hip and femurs in both legs. He was suited with prosthetic legs at age one. “People think it’s the end of the world if you have a child with a disability,”
The Parapan Am Games kicked off last Friday, and wrap up this Saturday.
Duggan said, adding her son snowboards and kneeboards. “We’ve always had lots of hope and see the best in everything.” Dariusz “Darek” Symonowicz should have been on the court with his teammates, but instead was watching from the stands. A member of the men’s national sitting volleyball team since 2012, Symonowicz is currently on medical leave and took on the role of cheerleader rather than player Monday night. “Canada is looking stronger than ever, including when I was on the team,” said the North York resident, adding the goal of the Canadian team is to win gold or silver at the Parapan Am Games to ensure a spot at the Rio 2016 Paralympics. “They are playing smarter and are more cohesive as a unit.” The crowd roared every time Canada scored a point and even though they ultimately lost, they still received a standing ovation when it was over.

Taylor says running against Blair not a grudge match >>>from page 1 Bill Blair announced earlier he would run for the Liberals. Both will face incumbent New Democrat Dan Harris, who will try to hang on to the territory he wrestled away from the Liberals in 2011. A local Progressive Conservative candidate has yet to be announced. Taylor, a 34-year-old theatre artist and activist, born in Mississauga, lives in the east side of downtown Toronto, but said he considers the whole city his home. It’s no coincidence he’s running in the same riding as Blair; he said he has a bone to pick with Toronto’s former top cop. “I was unlawfully arrested, along with my wife and a thousand other innocent people, at the G20 summit, and that was a really big wakeup call for me as a Canadian,” said Taylor, who wrote a play about the experience that he performed throughout Canada. He emerged from the 2010 arrest inspired to create change in his community. “I became very interested in human rights across Canada,” he explained. “G20 was really just the starting point. It really got me to become a responsible, and active and involved citizen who really cared about what was going on.” Blair was chief of Toronto police during the summit,
where Taylor and many others were controversially kettled and held for hours in temporary detention centres. Following a review of the situation, Blair stated publicly that police made some mistakes at the time, and vowed changes would be made to force training and policies. Taylor, though, said he found Blair’s behaviour following the summit unsatisfactory, and believes more is owed to the public if the Liberal candidate is to become a federal lawmaker. “I know he’s been very adamant that there has been accountability, and he’s sort of done everything he can to make sure justice was served,” said Taylor. “I think there’s some really serious questions that the people of Scarborough Southwest, and Torontonians, and all Canadians still want answered.” He wants to debate Blair’s handling of G20 one-on-one, and put it to bed early in the race. He maintained his bid to represent Scarborough Southwest is more than just a personal grudge match with Blair though. “It’s more so, not running against someone, but running for what I am about and what I believe in,” he said. He acknowledges he has his work cut out for him

competing against such popular candidates as Blair and Harris, who both showed strong support in pre-election voting polls. Taylor said he wants to speak up for issues including income inequality, environmental protection, civil liberties and democratic reform. He admits he is a unique choice for federal office. “I think voting for a candidate like myself, or sort of the bold ideas that the Green Party has, would really send a message to Ottawa,” he added. “I think it would be a great way to turn everybody on their heads if Scarborough Southwest did something a little different, get some creativity and inspiration back into government.”

West Hill Collegiate grad looks for a shot in the NBA DAVID GROSSMAN scm@insidetoronto.com Liam McMorrow is getting used to people looking up at him. At 7-foot-2, the Scarborough resident is attracting lots of international
attention. Some might liken it to that of celebrity status with people gawking and wondering if, because of his size, basketball is his forte. The round ball has become a huge part of the life of this 28-year old, but not yet where he wants it to be.

With an imposing size and tipping the scales at 270 pounds, McMorrow is still convinced he has what it takes to play in the National Basketball Association – and he hasn’t given up. “I can play and just need someone to give me a

chance,” said the West Hill Collegiate graduate, who has seen several Canucks latch on with NBA squads and wants to join the parade. While having opportunities to showcase his talent for pro teams, McMorrow is still waiting for the formal telephone call offering him a contract and chance to play – and he’d settle for a chance to play for the Toronto Raptors. Surprisingly snubbed by Canada Basketball for the recent Pan Am Games, McMorrow is staying in tip top physical shape and tapping in to his back-up plan: a lucrative contract to play in Japan. NBA Summer League “I d i d e ve r y t h i n g i n Orlando (at the Los Angeles Clippers Summer League) – rebounded, blocked shots and ran the floor,” said McMorrow, known for his athletic endurance and command of the court. “I have to remain optimistic that there is still an opportunity to get to the NBA.” As a kid, when youngsters and teens were playing the game of hoops in school gyms and playgrounds, McMorrow had his mind focused on hockey. His growth spurt, along with a liking for basketball, altered plans that had him leave the ice and trade in the skates for running shoes and the hardwood. His size is no fluke with his father, an engineer, at 6-foot7, while his mother, a nurse, is six feet. His brother Sean is 6-foot-4 and sister Kathryn, at 5-foot-11, is the shortest of three siblings. But it wasn’t until age 20 that McMorrow took competitive basketball seriously – and the sport has consumed his life. “It’s great now, I love the game and need to play,” said McMorrow, who said a huge motivator for him is spending time with his daughter, Lia. “I took to the game much later than most and realized there was a future. I can remember the struggles. I was raw and playing awful, too aggressive and didn’t know the rules. But it has all changed for the better.” At 17 years of age and 6-foot-5, McMorrow chose

Canada Revenue fraud scam targets single female seniors TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com
They’ll say you owe Canada Revenue Agency money for unpaid taxes. They’ll threaten to send a car over to arrest you. They tell you your credit history will be destroyed.” A big tip off is that perpetrators will demand victims electronically transfer the funds or pay in prepaid credit cards, something Canada Revenue Agency would never do, Gutter said. “Canada Revenue Agency would never request your personal information over the phone,” the veteran officer said. “They would never ask you to get prepaid credit cards to pay overdue taxes. They would never leave you voicemail messages with your personal information on it.” Gutter urged anyone who receives the calls to ask the caller his or her name, office phone number and email
Toronto police are warning residents, particularly single female seniors, of a scam in which people posing as Canada Revenue Agency officials call and threaten jail time unless erroneous back taxes are paid immediately. Toronto police fraud Const. Cornelus Gutter said the fraudsters share personal information about their victims in an attempt to appear legitimate. But that information is easily gained from victims’ social media accounts, like LinkedIn, Facebook or Instagram, he said. “They like to focus on elderly females,” said Gutter, who is with south Etobicoke’s 22 Division. “ They become quite aggressive trying to back you into forwarding them money.

They’ll get very angry, or they’ll just hang up.” Most importantly, don’t commit to anything, he added advised. “They’re relying on you acting in haste,” he said. “Call somebody. Call the police. Go to the front desk of any police station. Call your family lawyer. If you don’t want to call police or your lawyer, call a neighbour, a pastor, a friend, your son or daughter. Ask, ‘does this sound right?’” Gutter said almost all complainants whose case he has investigated would not have fallen victim to the scam “if

rink season extended in 2016 wIce It may not seem like a big deal now, but if the winter of 2016 turns out to be another long, cold ordeal that extends into March, Toronto will be ready thanks to a decision from Toronto’s Parks and Environment Committee. The committee voted to extend the outdoor artificial ice rink season into March, with the season extending by two and possibly four weeks, weather permitting. The move will cost a total of $556,200, but if Council approves it it will forestall what has become a reliable crisis when the mercury stays low into March Break and parents looking to spend an afternoon skating with their children are out of luck. Last winter, Mayor John Tory persuaded private sector companies to donate to the cause of keeping the rinks open, and vowed to make sure that the city simply
maintained the service. The Parks and Environment Committee approved the plan unanimously. Library babysitter course wCedarbrae
