Pack your appetites and dancing shoes, the fourth annual Scarborough Afro-Carib Fest is ready to rock. The free, two-day festival celebrating all things African and Caribbean returns Saturday, Aug. 22 and Sunday, Aug. 23 from noon to 9 p.m. each day, at the Scarborough Civic Centre’s Albert Campbell Square, 150 Borough Dr. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than before. “We have a lot more exciting activities this year,” said festivaldirector Madeline Nwokeji. “This will definitely be our best event yet.” For the first time, a Mr. and Miss Afro-Carib Fest pageant will be held. Five men and five women will compete for the inaugural titles, with six semifinalists selected Saturday, and winners crowned Sunday. Pageant hopefuls will be judged on talent, cultural attire, and question-period responses. This year’s entertainment line-up is stacked with stellar artists, Nwokeji noted. >>>ADAM, page 12

South Asian group aims to increase organ donations Forums to address ‘cultural and religious myths’ about donations

Council of Agencies Supporting South Asians (CASSA) executive director Neethan Shan, left, CASSA project manager Samya Hasan, lung transplant recipient Shilpa Raju and Trillium Gift of Life Network vice president of operations Versha Prakash attend a media conference Monday at the Dorset Park Community Hub in an effort to increase organ donation in the South Asian community.

AGINCOURT

A South Asian advocacy group in Greater Toronto will host public forums this fall to address “cultural and religious myths about organ and tissue donation” it says persist in their communities. The Council of Agencies Serving South Asians chose Scarborough – which has one of Ontario’s lowest overall registration rates – to announce the first South Asian Gift of Life Week from Oct. 5 to 11. During a press conference Monday at the Dorset Park Community Hub, representatives from CASSA and the Trillium Gift of Life Network commented on an Institute for

2015 SANTA FE SPORT hwy: 9.8l/100 km city: 12.9l/100 km

Clinical Evaluative Sciences study they said was first to document actual registration rates for people identifying themselves as South Asian or Chinese in Ontario, rather than just “expressed support to donate.” Less than average The study found 8.9 per cent of Chinese and 12.8 per cent of South Asians were registered for possible organ donation, less than half the Ontario average of 25.4 per cent in 2013. And among Ontarians who died in a hospital from 2008 to 2012, the families of 33 of 81 Chinese and 39 of 72 South Asians consented to donate

their loved one’s organs, proportions also lower than those of the general public. If registration rates rose in the Chinese and South Asian communities, that would make a difference for the more than 1,600 people waiting for a lifesaving transplant in Ontario, Alvin Li, the study’s lead author, said in a release. “The need for an organ or

tissue transplant can affect any one of us. No community is immune,” added Neethan Shan, CASSA’s executive director. Earlier this year, local volunteers told Scarborough city councillors the local registration rate for organ and tissue donations was only 11 per cent, compared with 27 per cent across the province. But even this was considered to be an improvement over previous years. CASSA said its forums on the myths surrounding organ donation will be in Scarborough, Markham, Brampton and Ajax during its campaign week in October.

The Ex: marking a special time of year for Toronto families

Write us

T

oronto summers have an ebb and flow to them marked by different events and traditions that define the season, but with the opening of the Canadian National Exhibition tomorrow comes the clearest sign of all: the end of summer is approaching. It’s part of life in the city and of being a Torontonian, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. The 137th annual version of The Ex opens Friday and continues until Labour Day on Monday, Sept. 7. The fair itself has its own traditions, including lots of wacky food creations, concerts, displays, theme days and the Canadian International Air Show to wrap it all up on the Labour Day weekend. Toronto families carefully pick the days they will attend based on events they want to see, and those are handed down our view traditions through the generations. You can pretty much bet that if your A Toronto parents made a point of going to The Ex on the air show weekend tradition because that’s what they wanted to see, you will now be taking returns your own kids, or maybe even grandkids, to also see the air show. Others make attending on Warriors Day or for the Labour Day parade a part of their family traditions. Respecting those traditions has been one of the reasons the CNE continues to be so successful and holds a special place in the hearts of Torontonians. The Ex, though, is not bound by tradition as it is also the place to see the newest innovations and products. The CNE makes sure it offers new events and experiences every year, and this year one of them is the Craft Beer Fest that takes place for the first time this summer. Though often referred to as bittersweet for kids who start counting the days until school starts again, the CNE is far from the only thing going on in Toronto over the remaining days of summer. Just a quick look around shows us this weekend has the Scarborough Afro-Carib Fest at Albert Campbell Square, the Tirgan Iranian Festival at Harbourfront, Ukrainian Independence Day at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, and the Tommy Thompson Park Butterfly Festival in the Beach, to name but a few. As always, if you’re looking for things to do in the city, visit us at insidetoronto.com/toronto-events

column

Welcome to the dog days of summer Summer camp must have ended Saturday morning, because when I walked up the street and parked myself on my favourite bench on the corner that evening, the neighbourhood was teeming with kids we hadn’t seen since the end of school. A group of four nearby was trying to figure out what to do on their first night back. Tristan: “So, what’s it going to be, gentlemen? We’ve been standing here for half an hour and haven’t been able to come up with anything. So why don’t we just head over to my house and download a movie? What would you like to see?” Serge: “Somebody else pick. I’m too excited and nervous following the Blue Jays to even think about anything else.” Arjun: “I’ll choose then. How about 102 Dalmatians? There’s three alone on the other side of the block as we speak.”

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Jake: “I never saw 101 Dalmatians. Will I be able to follow the plot?” Tristan: “What plot? They ran out of story lines by 48 Dalmatians.” Serge: “It was closer to 25 Dalmatians if you ask me.” Arjun: “What are you both talking about? They were classics. All of them. Starting with One Dalmatian.” Jake: “I don’t get what the big fascination is with Dalmatians? You take away the spots, what’s left?” Tristan: “You can’t take those spots away. They’re stuck on forever.” Serge: “He’s right. I tried once. They wouldn’t budge.” Arjun: “One thing I always wanted to know, in 102 Dalmatians, is it the same original 101 plus one more? Or are they 102 new ones?”

Jake: “You really think there are actually 102? Come on. Ask yourself, when do you ever see them all together in the same room at the same time? My guess is that were probably only five or 10 of them, max, and the director filmed them from different angles to make it seem like there were 102.” Tristan: “There might not have even been one real one. They were probably all computer generated.” Serge: “I heard Flipper wasn’t even a dolphin. It was Lassie in a wetsuit.” Arjun: “Yeah, right. And I suppose Skippy the Bush Kangaroo was really Lassie in faux fur with Minnie Mouse in faux fur in her pouch.” Jake: “Actually, it was Mini-Me in faux fur. Minnie wanted too much money.” Tristan: “Thanks a lot for spoiling the ending, man. I haven’t seen Skippy the Bush Kangaroo yet. Good friend you are.” Serge: “I think I’ll pass

on the Dalmatians, if that’s OK. Now, if there is a 102 Dachshunds movie, count me in. Everybody loves dachshunds.” Arjun: “I thought it was Raymond everybody loved. And what are dachshunds?” Jake: “You’re joking. They’re those cute little wiener dogs nobody can resist.” Tristan: “You got that right. Every time I see one of those adorable pooches I just wanna pick it up and give it a big hug.” Serge: “I wouldn’t if I were you, Tristan. You squeeze one with those big arms of yours and it won’t be a wiener dog anymore. It’ll turn into a pancake dog.” ...to be continued. In the meantime, it’s official, the kids are back. Now playing at a corner near me. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Transit not Toronto’s only election issue

T

here’s a federal election coming up on the distant horizon. For now, the talk on Toronto airwaves is about criminal justice, cheques, and other matters related to the Mike Duffy trial. At some point leading up to Oct. 19, one hopes that talk will centre closer to Toronto and our needs. Earlier in the summer, Mayor John Tory held meetings with representatives of the Liberals and New Democrats, and earlier in the year spent time making Toronto’s case to the federal Conservatives. As he pointed out then, things were looking pretty good for Toronto: two of three parties were committed to funding his Smart Track transit plan, and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau appears to be waiting for the right time to say so. So really – for Toronto, there is no downside. Well, that would be the case if transit weren’t the only story. Toronto has other needs that only the

then the child benefit cheques that the federal Conservatives sent out just before the writ was dropped should have had some impact on polling for them. It’s a safe bet that voting Torontonians will be dividing along lines more familiar from the past couple of elections: Harper Nation, if you will, and the remainder of the city looking to turf the bum out. That divide was in evidence when Harper stopped by Etobicoke (ground zero for that other Nation) in the company of an angry, foul-mouthed man who swore at reporters and suggested they all cheated on their taxes. Many elections ago, former Prime Minister Kim Campbell made the point that elections were no time to discuss issues. Those things get sorted out afterwards, when we’ve all gotten the bile out of our systems.

david nickle the city federal government can properly meet. We could use help with our crumbling stock of affordable housing. We could do with a federally-funded national child care program. And back at transit – once we get finished building a Scarborough subway along about the same route as the Smart Track plan, we’re going to need money for the downtown relief line that everyone agrees is the really crucial transit improvement. These all should be, at some point, deal-breaking or –making policies in making a rational choice for our next prime minister. As matters are unfolding, however, a rational, Toronto-centric choice is not what will be on most Toronto voters’ minds. If voters were taking simple enlightened selfinterest into account,

Work has begun to move a number of the sculptures, including the Mobius Curve by former sculptuer-in-residence Michael Clay, to new locations on the Guild Park grounds as renovation plans for the Guild Inn near reality.

Guild Inn restoration plan in final stages Demolition work expected to begin soon; monuments being moved to new spots MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com

ourteen years after the City of Toronto consigned it to slow decay, the Guild Inn’s restoration is finally at hand. Thanks to negotiations with a private operator which recently reached a final stage, the shuttered Scarborough landmark is about to be cut back to its original form, the century-old Bickford Residence. Already, 15 of Guild Park’s monuments _ sculptures and architectural fragments collected by former owners Spencer and Rosa Clark - are being moved out of the way. “There’s quite a lot of movement on the grounds,” Antonette DiNovo, executive assistant to Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie, said this week. “This is the movement we’ve been waiting for.” There were two failed attempts to revive the inn as a hotel and restaurant through third-party deals before Toronto’s Dynamic Hospitality and Entertainment Group put in a bid, which city council approved in April 2014.

Dynamic proposed a banquet hall, restaurant and space for community use totalling 2,915 square metres. After the city demolishes east and west additions to the damaged Bickford, the company plans to build an 800-person-capacity hall on the building’s west side and a ceremonial space on the east.

to start in April, but work was delayed by complicated negotiations for the project, which involve a heritage building the city manages on land owned by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

$11-million investment

Letter of credit It will hand the city a $4.78-million letter of credit until construction is complete, and has agreed to pay almost $49,000 to replant trees and restore park areas. Negotiations for a site plan agreement, which held up the start of the project for several months, advanced on July 24 when Dynamic signed a document allowing site plan approval when certain conditions are met. Now, the demolition work is expected “pretty soon” and there’s hope Dynamic can start building before winter sets in, Michael Williams, the city’s general manager of economic development, said Tuesday. Williams said toxic substances such as asbestos and mould have

been removed from the Bickford, and a large construction fence protecting nearby trees and the public could go up this week. Demolition had been expected

In June, council changed Dynamic’s sub-lease so that the city, which had committed $3.3 million to the project, would pay $1.1 million more for “unforseen” infrastructure costs. Dynamic, which had agreed to invest $9 million, would instead spend $11 million. The city promised more investments for Guild Park’s 88 acres in a 2009 “cultural precincts” plan, which it is studying once again. As new foundations were being poured this week for familiar park monuments – including the Mobius Curve sculpture, the wishing well, and a brick wall incorporating a 144-year-old sign from one of the Toronto’s first fire halls – John Mason, a park volunteer, said he wished residents had had more say in how preparations for the project will be done.

“The community is interested in finding out what’s going on,” said Mason, president of Friends of Guild Park and Gardens. “We wanted to have a public meeting before any work was done on the site.” Mason said Jo Ann Pynn, the city’s supervisor of cultural assets, gave community groups involved with the Guild a briefing, but that’s all. The last public meeting on the project was more than a year ago, he added this week. DiNovo said Ainslie plans a ribbon-cutting event for the transplanted monuments in October, and will host a community meeting “shortly” after that.

Tamil Fest in Scarborough slated for next weekend Toronto’s Tamil community is now grown up, and on the weekend of Aug. 29 and 30, it will be saying: “Vanakkam” – welcome – to resients from across the city. That’s the weekend the first Tamil Fest in Scarborough will showcase a people’s arts, music, and cuisine, the Canadian Tamil Congress says, for the first time outside the Indian subcontinent. Tamil-Canadians are 300,000 strong, “shining in various fields,” and own more than 2,000 businesses in the GTA alone, an audience at the street festival’s launch was recently told. Forum slated for Scarborough >>>from page 1 plans including new hospital facilities in Scarborough and West Durham. In April, Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins announced an expert panel he said would work six months to see how the hospitals can work better together - and would be able to recommend new facilities too. For the first four months of its mission, the panel has kept a low profile and its leader, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre CEO Dr. Barry McLellan, has refused interview requests. Two town halls at which the panel “welcomes the valuable perspective local residents can provide about their health service needs” are the only ones the general public can attend. One is from 7 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 25, at the Hilton Garden Inn on Beck Crescent in Ajax. The other is from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 26, at St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre on Finch Avenue in Scarborough. The panel – which says it has conducted “hospital-

based surveys” and met “community stakeholders” – hasn’t promised any other public meetings before it hands its report to Hoskins in October. Its statements have said it is building on “extensive community consultation” done during the hospital merger process. People who have met panel members in focus groups say the merger wasn’t addressed, though panelists seemed to take careful notes. “They didn’t really tell us what they are doing,” said Betty Wu-Lawrence, a long-time Scarborough resident. President of the Chinese Canadian Nurses Association of Ontario, Wu-Lawrence said whether RVHS and TSH merge doesn’t matter so long as Scarborough gets assurances its hospitals get the same share of resources given to others in Greater Toronto. “Some people are not really sure about the quality of health services in this area,” she said, adding she told panelists “respecting the

uniqueness of the area” and its immigrant populations is also important. Lee Soda, executive director of Agincourt Community Services, also attended a focus group and said panelists could not have missed complaints Scarborough hospitals are “run down” and “just not up to par” with others in Toronto. This is particularly true for the TSH Birchmount campus, which is in poor condition and “needs an injection of big money,” Soda said. “Scarborough residents deserve better.” In June, the health ministry said the panel will “recommend a process for the development of a master plan for the Scarborough (and) West Durham region that includes the necessary capital investment required to provide integrated acute care services.” Questions directed to the panel this week through the Central East Local Health Integration Network were not answered by press time.

Adam Solomon among entertainers at Afro-Carib Fest >>>from page 1 Performers include Alicia Cinnamon, Carnival Spice, Dance Caribe Performing Company, Destiny, Freddie B., Ijo Vudu, Kafinal, Level Exodus, Pan Masters Steel Orchestra and Trinity Mpho, as well as Juno-award-winner Adam Solomon and others. “We really selected some of the best acts,” Nwokeji said. “We have some really, really

talented artists and bands. It’s just going to rock. Everyone will really enjoy the entertainment.” Inspired by the sweet sounds, festival-goers can kick up their heels for prizes during dance competitions. Drum and dance workshops will also help guests groove to the beats. Along with live entertainment, there will be a wide

variety of delicious delights, spanning African, Caribbean, and Asian cuisines. “I’m excited myself, to eat,” said Nwokeji with a laugh. “It’s going to be really great food all around.” There will also be art, shopping and a career fair to check out, among other things. Families can stop by the Kids’ Zone for face-painting, games and activities.

This year’s theme is “celebrating our diversity,” in honour of Toronto’s multiculturalism. “It’s an event for people of all ages and all backgrounds,” Nwokeji explained. “It’s not just AfroCaribbean, it’s an event where you’ll see a great display of the city’s diversity. “What’s really unique about our festival is its ability to bridge social, cultural and

economic gaps,” she added. “And of course a great way to do that is through music, through dance, and through arts and culture.” An estimated 8,000 people are expected to attend the outdoor event, organized by the Heritage Skills Development Centre, with support from Canadian Heritage, TD Bank and the Ontario Arts Council.

“It’s a great way to wrap up the summer,” invited Nwokeji. “There’s something for everyone, no matter what culture or where you’re from. It’s really a great way to celebrate the richness of our diversity, and celebrate our community.” - Tara Hatherly

Former Hutterites The Nine share message at Scarborough book signing TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Four people who left remote religious communities to pursue life on their own terms are sharing their stories in North York and Scarborough this weekend. They are part of a group called The Nine, people who left Hutterite colonies in Canada and the United States eight years ago while between the ages of 17 and 25. Five years after leaving behind the only lives they knew, they began writing their stories. Group members Darlene Waldner, Sheryl Waldner, Rodney Waldner and Glenda Maendel are coming to local Chapters stores to meet with people and sign copies of their books. They visit North York Saturday, Aug. 22 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Bayview V illage Chapters, 2901 Bayview Ave. On Sunday, Aug. 23, they stop in Scarborough

from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Kennedy Commons Chapters, 20 William Kitchen Rd. Their first book, Hutterites: Our Story to Freedom, released in 2013, offers a candid look at Hutterite life, said Rodney. “We share our emotions, our feelings, what led up to leaving, why we left, and the reason that some of us got kicked out,” he said. “We share, really, a message of hope...How we came out of depression, and how we came out of fear, and how we overcame abuse, and how some of us struggled with anorexia.” Hutterites are spiritually similar to the Amish and Mennonites, but with different customs and more communal lifestyles. There are said to be an estimated 50,000 Hutterites in North America, living in colonies of approximately 100 people. Each member of The Nine has a chapter in the first book, detailing their personal expe-

riences and struggles. “Our story can, I believe, give hope to any person reading it, and any person that wants to have that change of life with whatever struggle they find themselves in,” Rodney said. Their second book, Since We Told the Truth: Our Lives Can Never Be the Same, released this year, answers questions arising from the first book and expands on the group’s message of helping others and following personal paths in life. It also promotes standing up for personal convictions. Copies of both books will be available at the signings. Sheryl said she and the other members joining the group’s Ontario book tour are looking forward to connecting with people during the appearances.

Canadian men’s team takes bronze in Parapan Am sitting volleyball FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com

door on Canada’s shot at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Brazil wook the gold medal in a win over the U.S. on Friday. “We wanted to come in and play well and win in three (sets) and we did that,” Canada’s captain Austin Hinchey told reporters after Friday’s game. “We were a little down after our loss (Thursday). I waited four years for that game and it was a huge loss for us. But I’m really proud of our guys. We’ve never played in front of a crowd like this and it was big for us.” Canada still has a shot – albeit a long one – at the Rio Games when they compete at the 2016 Intercontinental and World ParaVolley in Hangzhou, China March 17 to 23. It will be the final chance for one men’s team to qualify for Rio, and at least 19 teams are expected to compete. “It was my first major (competition) on home soil,” said

It wasn’t the colour they had hoped for, but the Canadian men’s sitting volleyball team scored the bronze medal with a win over Colombia last Friday. This marks the third straight bronze-medal finish for Canada’s men’s team in Parapan Am competition, having won third place in the 2007 Rio and 2011 Guadalajara Games. In front of a supportive home crowd, Canada won in three straight sets with scores of 28-26, 25-17, and 25-18 inside the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House at Morningside Avenue and Hwy. 401 in Scarborough. The win came a day after a heartbreaking loss to the United States, which saw the Americans win in four sets of 26-24, 25-23, 16-25, and 25-21, which all but shut the

Canada’s Jamoi Anderson, who scored the winning point in the third set. “It’s nice to get a medal. It’s not gold and it’s not silver, but we still worked hard.” Like teammates Jesse Buckingham, Jason Naval and Andrew Tucker, Anderson is a West Park Healthcare Centre amputation rehabilitation service/prosthetics and orthotics service patient, having lost his left leg in 2008 due to a mystery viral infection. Canada’s coach Ray Sewell said Thursday’s loss was difficult for the team, but they bounced back to take the bronze. “They performed really well,” he said. “Colombia is a strong team. It was a good match.”

Macdonald Plaza and a plaque erected in honour of the man most credited with building the Canadian Pacific Railway. But the designation doesn’t come without some controversy given Macdonald’s role in instituting a “head tax” on Chinese migrants and his policies on First Nations people during his years as prime minister. The move represents a diminished plan to honour Macdonald after a city survey found the majority were opposed to naming the station after him. Pilot project begins wpre-boarding

The pilot project will take place on a handful of buses on the 11 Bayview and 7 Bathurst routes. When the bus approaches a stop, as the front doors open, an external speaker will broadcast what route it serves and where it’s headed. CLOSURES RESUME wROAD

As technology has made working remotely easier, more and more professionals are working from home. Working from home can help working parents save money on childcare costs and help all workers avoid rush hour traffic jams and the costs of commuting to and from the office. The right working environment is essential for men and women who work from home. An environment that’s conducive to work can help people increase their productivity and make their employers more likely to allow more employees to work from home. Professionals who are new to working from home may find it takes some time before they can create the perfect working environment, but the following are a few factors to consider when planning a home office.

Space One of the disadvantages to working from home is that remote workers don’t have access to the same level of

equipment as in the main office, such as colour copiers or scanners. If you want to include even scaled-down versions of such equipment in your office, you will need ample space. In addition, less spacious home offices can feel too tight and enclosed, making workers uncomfortable and less enthusiastic about working every day. Pick a spot in your home that affords room for your equipment and the ability to move around so you don’t feel cramped throughout the workday.

Lighting Lighting is another factor remote workers must consider when they’re planning their home offices. Natural light can provide an energetic boost and improve your mood, so choose a room in your home that gets lots of sunlight during the day. Many professionals who work remotely do so from the basements of their homes, which can make it difficult to rely on natural light. If the basement is the only location in your

home that can fit a home office, look for lighting sources that replicate daylight so you are not working in dark quarters. Speak with your physician about how to arrange lighting to reduce eyestrain caused by staring at a computer.

Connectivity Connectivity also must be considered when planning a home office. While wireless Internet has made Internet dead zones less problematic, certain areas or rooms in your home may still be touch-and-go with regard to Internet connectivity. Such areas should be avoided when choosing a room for your home office, as it can be difficult to remain productive if your connection to your office’s external server is routinely compromised. Find an area where the wireless connection is always strong.

Distractions While your home might be empty for much of the day, you don’t want to be

distracted when the kids come home from school or when your spouse or roommate arrives home from work. Avoid putting your home office too close to popular hangout areas in your home, such as the kitchen and the living room. Instead, choose a room where you have lots of privacy so you

can focus on your work and won’t be routinely interrupted. Working from home can pay numerous dividends, but professionals who telework must put careful thought into the rooms or areas of their homes where they plan to work.

Spruce up outdoor space before hosting guests Beautiful summer nights make for great opportunities to invite some friends over for a starry soiree under the nighttime sky. Unlike house parties, at which guests will be spending most of their time indoors and in various rooms throughout the house, outdoor parties are often limited to smaller areas, such as patios and backyards. This can make things much less taxing on hosts, who won’t have much prep work to do to get an outdoor hosting area ready for party guests. But even an impromptu party requires planning and a little elbow grease before guests arrive. The following are a few areas to address before guests arrive for your next outdoor get-together.

Clear away debris The walkways and patio may not need too much attention, but give them a once-over with a broom to clear any debris. When clearing the patio of de-

bris, move all furniture, making sure to sweep up any debris, including food, that might have fallen beneath tables and chairs since your most recent party, or “al fresco” dinner. If the patio is especially dirty, consider power washing it to remove stubborn stains that can rob the area of its aesthetic appeal.

Clean the furniture Whether it’s been months since your last party on the patio or just a few days, the furniture must be cleaned. Unless items have been stored in a garage or shed, patio furnishings are exposed to the elements, and that means dirt, soil, soot or pollen may have accumulated on the furniture. Wipe down all cushions, using a mild detergent when necessary. Cushions may need some time to dry, so make this one of your first tasks, and leave cushions out in the sun so they dry more quickly. Once the cushions have been cleaned, wipe down the furniture with a

wet towel to clear them of any dirt.

Clean and inspect the grill The grill is a go-to accessory when hosting an outdoor party, so give the grill a thorough cleaning before the first guests arrive. Nothing brings a party to a halt like hunger, and guests may begin to grow antsy if they are not served food in a reasonable amount of time. If you are using a propane grill, check to make sure the tanks are full as you clean the grill. Running out of propane is a summer soiree faux pas, so you might want to keep an extra tank handy just to be safe.

Clear the entryway to your home Your guests will likely be using the same entryway over and over again during the party, so focus on cleaning this entryway so guests don’t trip or have to

jump over toys on their way to an indoor restroom. Once the entryway has been cleared of potential tripping hazards, make sure the indoor path to the restroom is clear as well. Hosting guests for an outdoor get-

together is one of the highlights of the summer, as the good weather doesn’t always last. A little bit of prep work will leave your guests impressed with your outdoor space.

TTC riders seek members to fight planned fare hike RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com TTCriders wants to start a revolution. The city’s largest transit advocacy group is recruiting volunteers to act as “route captains” to engage transit users at bus stops and subway stations, advocate for local service improvements, and lobby city councillors to speak out in favour of better TTC funding. According to group spokesperson Suhail Barot, the recruitment drive is meant to give voice to a mass of transit riders, particularly with transportation a key issue in the October federal election, and a TTC fare hike all but sure for next year. “1.8 million people take transit in Toronto every day,” said Barot during an interview last week. “If we can get them engaged we can really build a movement.”

The group is planning a day of action on Monday, Sept. 13 and will canvas approximately 50 transit locations on the importance of better funding for the perpetually cash-strapped TTC, which has reported a preliminary operating budget shortfall of nearly $100 million for next year in the wake of announcements to improve and restore service to pre-2011 levels. TTCriders has made a name for itself of late with agitprop protests and social media shaming of political figures through awareness campaigns such as #TTCsardines, which has captured the level of disenchantment by transit users. Even elected officials are frequently spouting the group’s catchphrases and slogans. That politicians are eager to co-opt TTCriders’ message is a sign they understand the importance of public transit

for a city like Toronto, Barot said. “They seem to be getting the message of the importance of better transit. And if they don’t do anything else we will hold them accountable,” he said. Barot said the group will also continue to target the provincial government for failing to provide adequate operational funds for the TTC, which relies overwhelmingly on fare box revenue and city subsidy to meet its budget needs. “We’ve worked to get the province to fund the TTC’s operations which they stopped doing over 15 years ago,” he said. “You need funding to expand the system and lower fares. Funding comes from the city and it could come from the province and the federal government as well. You can’t make the system better unless the resources are available.”
