Celebrate Kwanzaa at local show
HOLIDAY DREAMS IN SCARBOROUGH
ALI RAZA araza@insidetoronto.com
Events listings / 16
It’s a celebration of community at the African Canadian Heritage Association’s (ACHA) annual Kwanzaa Show this Saturday, at Alexander Stirling Public School. The celebration runs from 1 to 5 p.m. and admission is free. Instead, ACHA asks guests to bring a non-perishable food item for donation to the food bank. Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration of African heritage that takes places Sat. between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1. But ACHA communications director Louis March stresses that though Kwanzaa has its roots in the African diaspora, it’s a celebration of principles that “transcend” people around the world. “It speaks to building family, community, creativity, collective responsibility, faith and selfdetermination,” March said. >>>KWANZAA, page 36

‘What’s Up’ clinic offers counselling
Grant helps food hub East Metro Youth Services provides ‘barrier-free’ mental health services at East Scarborough ALI RAZA araza@insidetoronto.com Storefront Scarborough’s ‘What’s Up’ Walk-in Clinic at East Metro Youth Services is looking at mental health counselling in a unique, accessible way. Functioning as a walk-in clinic, ‘What’s Up’ provides immediate service to visitors with a myriad of different mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, selfharm, bullying and family issues. Wait times are generally 20 minutes compared to the nine months it took before EMYS opened the walk-in clinic. The clinic offers “barrierfree” service for youth and children between the ages of 0 and 28 free of charge and parents can join their kids if they wish. It was established by EMYS in 2011, and since then has served approximately 3,500 people with 1,500 this year alone. “The need in our community for people to receive immediate counselling support is there,” said David O’Brien, Clinical Services Supervisor, EMYS. Immediate support “We established the clinic to create a space and environment where people could get mental health support immediately.” The clinic is open Monday to Friday and starting in February 2015 it expects to open on Saturdays. That move will make ‘What’s Up’ the first children’s mental health centre in Ontario to provide clinical services on Saturdays. Currently, the clinic re c e i ve s f u n d i n g f ro m
Scarborough’s new community eco-food hub has been given a helping hand of $15,000. East Scarborough Storefront in the KingstonGalloway-Orton Park area will receive the funds, as well as a donation of paint, from Benjamin Moore & Co. through a partnership with Community Foundations of Canada (CFC). The grant will be presented Wednesday, Dec. 10, morning at the Storefront. The Storefront is one of five Canadian community groups announced in November to receive the Benjamin Moore Giving Moore Foundation Grant. Partnership

the Ministry of Child and Youth Services. Additional help through partnerships with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Aisling Discoveries, Springboard and Bereaved Families of Ontario allows the clinic to have three clinical staff members. But the clinic finds ways to expand despite tight funding. Last year, it started an LGBTQ group called ‘East Qrew.’ “Most LGBTQ services are downtown, but LGBTQidentified people are everywhere across the city,” said Carly Kalish, Individual and Family Therapist, EMYS. “We wanted to establish something right in the roots of the community.” ‘East Qrew’ has been suc-
cessful as the clinic sees 10 to 12 youth come in every week. Kalish says that some even bring more youth to the group. Option for youth Staff believe the clinic has grown to become a appealing option for youth because of its open access. Many mental health clinics Ontario often require “barriers to service” like a prolonged assessment or an uncertain diagnosis which delays access. The walk-in model reflects current cultural trends, O’Brien explained. “Youth live in a very spontaneous world and tend to access service when they
need to and when they want to,” he said. “This model reflects accessibility. There are 24-hour gyms, 24-hour grocery stores, you can google anything and get information instantly, so we thought why shouldn’t counselling and therapeutic services be the same?” The clinic runs evaluation projects to assess improvements in its patients after one session of counselling.
consequently, improvements in people’s lives. Kalish previously worked as a therapist in other clinics, but the walk-in method lets her see “the strength of the community” she said. “I find the resilience of the community is amazing, eyeopening and inspirational,” she said. “You might only see them one time, but it’s remarkable to see what can happen in that amount of time.” The ‘What’s Up’ Walk-in clinic is at East Metro Youth Services on 1200 Markham Rd., Suite 200.
Improves lives The evaluation found that visitors had what O’Brien calls an “a-ha!” moment or a shift in thinking. He said the shift leads to changes in behaviour and

This year, the grants commemorate the 15-year partnership between Benjamin Moore and CFC. Five more grants from the Giving Moore Foundation will be announced to help in renovation and restoration projects in communities across Canada. With this boost, the Storefront will build a pergola in front of its hub, allowing for an indoor/outdoor cooking and eating space. It will also add outdoor community murals with the donated paint. Benjamin Moore and CFC identified the Storefront as the best opportunity for investment on the recommendation of the Toronto Foundation.

Small measures can make a big impact on the transit file
Write us
G
etting people moving in this city – on our roads and transit routes – is a complicated, political endeavour. Historically, the file moves about as fast as the traffic on the Gardiner Expressway during rush hour, ever frustrating commuters whose lives are impacted daily by the city’s choked arteries. That’s why it’s refreshing to see some immediate, tangible measures being taken to ease our traffic woes. Mayor John Tory’s recently announced initiatives are minor in nature compared to talk of mass transit solutions, but they make the best of a difficult situation by effecting change now. And when compounded over time, these little measures may add up to major our view improvements. At least something’s being done, and that Review small action is breathing some new life into the transit conversation in changes to Toronto. It’s critical we continue to build on this momentum. see effect Tory’s plan calls for several things: the immediate towing of cars and trucks illegally parked on major roads during rush hour, adding more arterial road cameras, ramping up the installation of re-timed traffic signals scheduled for next year, extending work hours on construction sites for large infrastructure projects and making private-sector firms pay more for the privilege of closing lanes and boulevards for construction. On Monday morning, Tory also made official the all-door boarding of the 504 King streetcar (though many streetcar operators have already been allowing this due to overcrowding). That same day, Toronto police launched their own anti-gridlock campaign to help get us moving. These initiatives are promising, but there’s still much to do. Long-term strategy is key and that’s already underway with a request for a SmartTrack feasibility study coming from executive committee last week. There needs to be ongoing public consultation. A review process also needs to be in place to see if these short-term measures are having the intended effect – something also called for by JeanPierre Boutros, a former city hall and TTC insider who spoke with us last week. Fixing the transit problem in Toronto is a big picture kind of dilemma. But these quick wins deliver some much-needed momentum at a time when the transit file’s been all but stalled at the gate.

Offices help kick off the holiday season
T
he next few weeks are typically filled with holiday office parties and my advice if you’re invited to any, either in your own company or as a guest at a significant other’s place of business, by all means go. Take in as many as you can. Secret Santas, costumed events, pot luck lunches, entertainment nights, whatever. They’re always a good time. Just make sure to show up with the intention of having fun. Don’t view them as a good opportunity to network. It’s not the best time to initiate business talk. forget networking If you attempt to hook up with somebody for a serious discussion about potential job opportunities, for example, you usually get hit with, “Things are chaotic right now, what with the holidays coming up and all. Let’s try
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY and touch base in the new year.” Ah yes, the proverbial new year. And just when does it officially begin? Not the first or second week January, it seems. Call that soon and you’ll no doubt hear, “Things are chaotic right now, what with the holidays having just wrapped up. Let’s try and touch base a bit later.” So you bide your touching base time until February. Alas, February is still a tad early in the new year, apparently. “Things are chaotic right now, what with the kids coming home for Reading Week. Try a bit later.” What’s in store for you in March? “Things are chaotic right now, what with March Break coming up.
Try a bit later.” How about April? “Things are chaotic right now, what with tax season upon us. Try a bit later.” And May? “Things are chaotic right now, what with the older kids coming home from university. Try a bit later.” What’s the verdict in June? “Things are chaotic right now, what with the younger kids finishing school. Try a bit later.” the chaos continues July and August, perchance? “Things are chaotic right now, what with everybody up at the cottage on the weekends. Try a bit later.” September, maybe? “Things are chaotic right now, what with everybody back to school. Try a bit later.”
October, then? “Things are chaotic right now, what with Thanksgiving and Halloween both coming up. Try a bit later.” So by process of elimination, it has to be November, right? Afraid not. “Things are chaotic right now, what with me being up to my eyeballs working on the annual budget. Try a bit later.” Which brings us right back to where we started. So, like I said, go to as many parties as possible. But remember any serious talk is best left for another day. And when is the ideal time to try and have such a chat? That I don’t know. But, just to be safe side, I’d wait until after the new year, if I were you. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. Tips for Tory to reduce congestion To the editor: This letter was forwarded to Mayor John Tory with a copy forwarded to Metroland Media Toronto. I understand Tory is seeking ways to improve the flow of traffic in Toronto. I have read about giving tickets to delivery trucks and those parked either illegally or past the time of their purchased ticket. There are other ways traffic flow can be vastly improved, and I propose 11 such methods: • Synchronizing traffic lights: This has worked successfully in Mississauga. As well, left-turn signals would ensure backed-up traffic doesn’t have to go through on the red. • Place sensors on side streets. In areas where, quite often, there isn’t any traffic on a side street, put a sensor on it ensuring traffic lights won’t turn red unless/until there’s a car on there. • Remove stop signs at T-intersections: There only needs to be a stop sign for
those on side streets turning, not for those going straight. • Change the side of the road from which pedestrians cross: Pedestrians should only cross on the side where oncoming traffic is turning in the opposite direction. • Have activation buttons where otherwise traffic need not stop. At places specific to cyclists, only when a cyclist presses the button should traffic be stopped. • Ticket excessively slow drivers. Not only do slow drivers impede the flow of traffic, but they cause dangerous situations whereby others try to pass them, though often it’s unsafe. • Place bicycle lanes where they are most useful and won’t impede traffic flow. Bicycle lanes should only be on streets with two lanes going in either direction, as streets are too narrow, especially for those turning left and waiting for a respite from oncoming traffic. This causes a backlog of traffic. Those going around said car endanger the few cyclists using that lane.
• Make cyclists responsible while generating money for our city. I suggest licensing cyclists so when they are involved in accidents, they can pay through insurance. As well, make wearing helmets mandatory and ticket offenders. • We need to build more roads. Even if it means expropriating land, we must build more roads to accommodate the increased number of vehicles. This has been effective in Europe, and we must utilize what little land we have. • No permits for those with garages. Only allow street parking for those who have more than two cars or need handicapped parking. • No parking on four-lane roads with streetcars. On roads with only two lanes going in both directions and one lane is used by streetcars, do not allow parking during rush hour. A stalled streetcar means no cars can go around if the other lane has parked cars. Dee C. Burns
Opposition to Rouge Park plans called ‘shameful’ To the editor: Re: ‘Federal NDP will not support Rouge National Urban Park bill,’ Community, Nov. 20. award-winning methods to conserving biodiversity and ensuring the health of the park’s wildlife and ecosystems through rigorous scientific monitoring of plants, animals, waters and soils. Ecologically sound Agricultural lands will be managed in an ecologically sound fashion, with farmers
committing to conserving resources and contributing to the park’s visitor experience and cultural heritage. Nature, culture and agriculture are the priorities of the Rouge National Urban Park legislation that should receive unanimous support in the Parliament of Canada. Ken Kirupa
Parked cars make driving hazardous To the editor: Vehicles being parked on the street along Morningview Trail and Littles Road, which is the route for the TTC’s 131 Nugget bus, is becoming a nightmare. People are parking throughout the night on these streets, which are only two lanes one each way. It is hazardous for
the bus drivers who have to drive along these streets. At times it is impossible to drive on the streets because of parked vehicles.
I know the city is always looking for revenue, and the parking enforcement can help to achieve this goal by enforcing the law.

TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games tickets went on sale at 1 p.m. Monday with more than 20,000 sold in the first two hours. In the first 24 hours of sales, 50,000 tickets were sold. Dignitaries and athletes gathered at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough to announce the official launch of general ticket sales. Pan Am Games CEO Saad Rafi, former Olympic cyclist Curt Harnett and Scarborough’s own Dwayne De Rosario, a member of the Canadian men’s soccer team and la player with Toronto FC ast season , spoke of their excitement of the games. The announcements were followed by a diving demonstration. “Spectators will be cheering, Canadian flags and flags of the Americas will be waving and lifetime memories will happen under this roof at these Games,” Rafi said.

Soccer star Dwayne De Rosario speaks during an event to kick-off tickets for the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games in Scarborough Monday afternoon.
“Now is the time to buy tickets so you can be here to make your own memories.” De Rosario, who grew up in Scarborough and became a professional MLS soccer player, thanked Pan Am sponsors and teams that are organizing the games. But he also made the point of being appreciative of what the Games bring to the community. “Words can’t describe the lasting impact a facility like
this will leave on generations to come,” De Rosario said. “We all know Scarborough’s a great place for young talent. I’m hoping that a facility like this would make our local kids’ dreams more tangible but also creates an environment where they can perform and train.” The Games will bring 10,000 athletes from 41 countries to Toronto and area as they compete in 10 new facilities and 15 upgraded facilities.
The Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre will be the “epicentre” of the games and will have a “tremendous impact on future development and future champions,” said Hartnett. Though 160,000 tickets were sold in the early access period, many seats are still available in soccer, rugby sevens, basketball, track and field, aquatics and artistic gymnastics. Tickets start at $20 and rise depending on seating, with 75 per cent of tickets priced $45 and under. Those aged under 16 or over 65 can grab tickets at half price, but the number is limited. Tickets are also integrated with transportation as each ticket-holder will be able to use transit on the day of the event. To purchase tickets, visit TORONTO2015.org/tickets or call 1-855-726-2015. Tickets for the TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games go on sale in the spring.

opinion
Support of Mammoliti troubling The voters of Ward 7 returned Giorgio Mammoliti to office this year in one of the least explicable electoral decisions this side of 2010. The long-serving councillor is, after all, under investigation by police for a fundraiser that so egregiously violated the rules under which councillors operate, that council also docked three months of his pay. The one thing to say in defence of these perplexing constituents is at least they don’t have a relationship with former members of the Sussex Group – a lobbying organization named prominently in the integrity commissioner’s report as contributing to the councillor’s $80,000 take from the 2013 fundraiser. The same cannot be said for Mayor John Tory, who hired two former members of the energetic lobbying organization as his senior staff: Chris Eby as his chief of staff and Vic Gupta as his principal secretary. Those hires raised some eyebrows around City Hall
david nickle the city when it was announced shortly after the election. It wasn’t really a problem, until now – just a week after Tory pushed the appointment of Mammoliti to two influential (and potentially influenceable) bodies, the committee that appoints members of the committee of adjustment, and the board of Exhibition Place. Mammoliti has now come forward with a request to cover $48,000 in legal bills he’s accumulated, attempting to strike down the report from the integrity commissioner, and restore the $26,000 in pay he’s lost. The audacity would be shocking in any other councillor than Mammoliti, whose torqueing of the entitlements of office has been almost a secondary career to the one he’s used as councillor. It’s still noteworthy, but it also resurrects uncomfortable
questions about the embrionic Tory administration. One could sense last week that Tory and his team had realized they’d made something of an error, at least in supporting Mammoliti for the committee of adjustment appointment body. A motion by ScarboroughAgincourt Councillor Norm Kelly, to add more members to that committee (and so dilute the individual influence of each councillor) passed easily. The Exhibition Place appointment went through easily. None of this suggests Tory or his team are behaving improperly, or there’s anything legally wrong with appointing the duly-re-elected Mammoliti to boards and committees for which he’s eligible. But appearance is important in politics, and it sets a tone early in the term – and the tone that the mayor’s tacit support of Mammoliti sets is a troubling one. Dave Nickle is the Mirror’s city hall reporter. His column appears every Thursday.

Cause of fire at homes near Midland/Kingston under investigation “Firefighters worked very hard to protect additional exposures and were successful in doing so.” Neither house was occupied at the time. Damage is estimated at more than $1 million. A fire captain suffered a minor injury to his neck at the scene. The cause of the blaze is not known. Powell said one possibility could be an electrical malfunction. “The house under construction may have had heaters in it to keep portions of it warm so part of the infrastructure wouldn’t freeze,” he said, adding “there’s too many questions, and the fire marshal will bring those expertise in to deal with it.”
ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
The fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of a two-alarm blaze in Scarborough that destroyed a house under construction and caused extensive damage to another. The fire broke out on Heale Avenue near Midland Avenue and Kingston Road at about 8:45 p.m. on Saturday. “We had numerous phone calls to this address,” said Captain Stephan Powell of Toronto Fire Services. “Residents claimed in excess of 30-foot high flames visible.” Powell said the fire was “fully involved” when firefighters arrived. “We lost the one house under construction. A second house, immediately south of it, received extensive fire damage,” he said.

Macdonald C.I. grad Stathopulos top scorer in women’s OUA hockey S c a r b o r o u g h ’s L i s a Stathopulos is having another good start to the season, and, not coincidentally, so is her York University women’s hockey team. Heading into the holiday break, the former athlete of the year at Scarborough’s Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate is the leading scorer in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women’s hockey league with 21 points (12 goals, nine assists) through the first 14 games. That already makes it her highest scoring season in the OUA. That includes last season when a season-ending injury after only three games ended a promising start, as she had already recorded six points (three goals, three assists). In her first two years, she contributed 15 and 14 points, respectively (which left her tied for 39th and 46th, respectively in the scoring leaderboard). Even more importantly,
Lisa Stathopulos of the York University women’s hockey team is the OUA’s leading scorer.
her York Lions team is in the playoff hunt with seven wins, five losses and two overtime losses (worth a point each).
That’s already more wins than they recorded all last season when they finished well out of the post season at 6-16-2. The team went into the holiday break on a high note with a 5-0 win over cross-city rivals the Ryerson Rams with Stathopulos contributing a couple of goals. Also of note, she is also the only player among the top 39 scorers without a penalty. Back in high school, Stathopulos was named senior athlete of the year in 2009 and is a three-time hockey MVP. The multi-sport athlete also picked up team MVP awards at Sir John A. Macdonald in flag football and soccer and also played varsity field hockey. She played junior hockey in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) with Durham West Lightning.

West Hill minor bantams win Silver Stick Ontario title The West Hill Golden Hawks minor bantam AA boys hockey team recently won the International Silver Sticks Ontario Region championship in Sudbury. The boys went undefeated in the tourney, which took place Nov. 29 to 30, beating the Sudbury’s Nickel City Jr. Sons 9-1, Gloucester Rangers 2-0, Ottawa Valley Silver Seven 10-5 and notching a 2-2 tie against topranked Ottawa Sting. The game against the Sting was controversial as West Hill forward Ian Martin scored what appeared to have been the game winner. Though the referee at first ruled it as a goal, it was called back after an on-ice conference with the linesmen the goaltender. The officials ruled the puck never crossed the goal line, when it appeared obvious to spectators that the puck hit the back of the net. On Sunday afternoon, West Hill played tournament favourite and Greater Toronto Hockey League rivals North Toronto for the championship. The game was a nail biter right to the end. North Toronto drew first blood with a goal at 8:27 in the opening period. At 12:34 in the second,

defenceman Riley Rogers’ slapshot from the blue line tied it at one. Twenty-seven seconds later, John Morias scored what was thought to be a go-ahead goal for West Hill, but
it was called back by the officials. North Toronto scored in the last minute of the second period to take a 2-1 lead. In the opening minute of the third,
West Hill’s Ian Martin scored on a two-man advantage to tie it 2-2. With just 38.1 seconds left in the game, West Hill forward Teagan Seagrove popped in the game winner.
North Toronto came close to tying up the game if not for the heroics of the strong defenders and game MVP, goaltender Kyle Fotopoulos, who went on to stop 30 of the 32 shots he faced throughout championship game. Head coach Christian Egsgard commented after the win, “We had to come through some tough moments but we worked hard, and saw our way through. The boys played really hard and we have a championship to show for it.” West Hill now advances to the International Silver Stick Finals in Newmarket next month. Transit set to hike fares wGO GO Transit riders should brace themselves for a fare hike in 2015. The regional transit agency is recommending Metrolinx’s board of directors, scheduled to meet today, approve a tiered fare increase to take effect in February. For the first time, GO wants fares to be determined by calculating total distance traveled. For example, the minimum cost of $5.20 for a oneway trip would increase by 10 cents, while it will cost 50 additional cents compared to 2014 for fares exceeding $8.25. The fare hike works out to an average of five per cent compared to 2014. SHARE GETS NEW CORPORATE SPONSOR wBIKE
Toronto’s city-operated bike share service has a new corporate sponsor and, it would seem, long-term viability. This week, Mayor John Tory announced TD Bank will partner with Bike Share Toronto, a move he vowed

Despite record ridership, Bike Share, when it was known as BIXI Toronto, still needed a bailout in 2013 from council to not default on a city-backed loan of some four million dollars. Last year BIXI also reported it could not meet its annual operating expenses of $400,000.

WON’T MEET GROWTH TARGETS wTTC
Despite beating last year’s all-time high, the TTC will not meet its ridership growth projections for 2014. The transit commission had hoped to reach a threshold of 540 million rides this year, representing growth of 3 per cent over 2013, but it’s expected to fall five million short. In his monthly performance report to the TTC board, TTC CEO Andy Byford said 2014’s final ridership tally will still exceed last year’s record total of 525 million rides.
TTCRIDERS ANNOUNCE BEST AND WORST The advocacy group TTCriders announced the winners of its annual awards showcase commemorating the naughty and nice when it comes to transit. TTC CEO Andy Byford was named 2014’s Transit Champion for his efforts pushing for better transit funding. He accepted the award in person at TTCriders’ end-of-year

Twelfth Annual Beary Merry Christmas 2014
Metroland Media Toronto is very proud to be the founder of the Beary Merry Christmas Campaign. For the 12th consecutive year, Scarborough Mirror employees will deliver teddy bears to children spending the holidays in our local hospitals. We are so proud to have Samko & Miko as the official sponsor of this year’s teddy bears. As you can see, there are many other community minded businesses in the area that have generously purchased a bear for a needy child this season. We thank all of our partners for helping us put smiles on the faces of so many children this Holiday Season.

Death in a Black Suit is a great murder mystery
“
MARIA TZAVARAS scm@insidetoronto.com An amazing performance was given by the Scarborough Theatre Guild of the world premiere of Maureen Jennings’ Death in a Black Suit. The murder mystery was everything one could hope for and expect from a writer like Jennings, who is an awardwinning Toronto author and creator of the highly acclaimed television series Murdoch Mysteries. Imagine being stuck in a cottage on an isolated island in Georgian Bay during a freak April winter storm and a murderer is among you? This is the predicament the characters find themselves in, and have to endure, until the weather clears and they can get off the island. The group of five actors, husband and wife Liz and Stephen (Sydney Kondruss, Kenny Gallop), Jeff (Scott Jones), Janine (Krista Lawley) and Max (Rob Pristas), along

with stage manager Frieda (Emily Schooley) have gathered at the cottage of their director, Richard (Alex Bortoluzzi) to rehearse an upcoming production of their next play. Tensions are high early on because Jeff seems to have it in for everyone. He is cocky, obnoxious and overtly hitting on all the women. From the beginning, you can tell he knows more than he’s letting
on. Add this to the issues Liz and Stephen seem to be having within their relationship, a clearly agitated Janine, and Max, who has a drinking problem and also something he’s hiding. The only two who seem calm are Rich, who is playing Detective Murdoch in their murder mystery play, and Frieda, the newcomer to the group who barely knows anyone.
LA MATTRESS Sealy Factory Warehouse
What’s great about this murder mystery is the richness of the characters. They are complex and have intricate story lines.
As the weather gets worse, tensions soar and before the first act is over, a murder has taken place. You can probably guess who it was but what you’ll have to guess throughout the remainder of the show is who and why. It seems everyone has secrets and a motive. What’s great about this murder mystery is the richness of the characters. They are complex and have intricate storylines. It’s this attention to detail, and how the characters lives are all interwoven, that make this story not your average murder mystery. It’s more of a slice of life story where a couple of murders just happen to occur. It’s
also what makes this story so interesting and successful in being engaging and entertaining at the same time. There are so many clues dropped and these actors play their roles so well, you’ll have to be a master sleuth to guess everything that has happened and who it is. Talented actors The talented actors are all convincing in their roles, which makes it harder to guess. Jones is amazing as the obnoxiously arrogant Jeff and you’ love to hate him. Bortoluzzi plays Rich with a calm and strong demeanor, successfully leaving the audience to wonder about his dirty laundry. Pristas is fantastic as Max, the much-needed comedic relief of the show, because if there’s ever a time to be intoxicated it would be in this situation. Schooley as Frieda is such an interesting character, and

she is successful at leaving us to wonder about her past. The husband and wife duo played by Kondruss and Gallop is also an amazing dynamic to watch. She is snarky and moody, but realistic and funny, while her husband’s devotion seems a bit much for a modern-day marriage. Lawley plays Janine, a woman with a serious secret, amazingly well. This character has a lot on her plate, and these murders threaten a lot more than her life in the cottage. This show is exhaustingly engrossing, which is a good thing in this genre of theatre. Every word, movement, look is scrutinized, and with all that you may guess wrong, be half right, but I guarantee you will be surprised at the end. Death in a Black Suit runs until Dec. 13 at the Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd.

Roof repairs needed CAA Members at Tony Stacey Centre save up to Scarborough’s Tony Stacey Centre for Veterans Care is appealing to the community for help as it raises funds for a much-needed roof repair to the facility which opened in 1976. Located on Lawson Road, the centre provides long-term care services. An estimate for repairs to the roof came in at approximately $138,000, and the work is desperately needed according to officials at the centre. Time is also critical as past a certain point next year, repairs will not be effective and the entire roof will need to be replaced at a cost almost four times as much as the repairs. An 83-year-old man is dead after the car he was driving struck a pickup truck Sunday. Police said the senior’s 2004 Buick LeSabre was south on Kennedy Road approaching Ranstone Gardens (south of Lawrence Avenue) when for unknown reasons it entered the northbound lanes, sideswiping a northbound 2010 Honda Accord and then striking a northbound 2003 GMC Sierra pickup head-on, at 9:44 a.m. The driver of the Buick was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. This is the city’s 46th fatal collision of the year.

“Depressing” is what Scarborough-Guildwood Liberal MP John McKay calls the decision on the Rouge National Urban Park Bill. McKay, also the Liberal Environment Critic, held a press conference on Thursday, Dec. 4, at Parliament Hill with Green Party Leader Elizabeth May to publicly oppose the federal government’s decision on Bill C-40. At Environment Committee in November, the federal government opposed all 18 amendments made by opposition parties to the bill. Now the Rouge NUP bill is all but passed, said McKay, to the dismay of politicians
from all opposition parties and several environmental groups. “The government brought in closure on a park bill,” McKay said. “ This is 84 times so far. If you accumulate all of the closure bills of all the previous governments since Confederation, this government has exceeded that number of closure bills.” Calling the closure a “new low,” McKay explained that the public only received four hours of time at the committee. Criticism of the bill has come from groups such as Nature Canada, Environmental Defence, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, David Suzuki Foundation, Friends

of the Rouge Watershed, Ontario Nature and Save the Oak Ridges Moraine Coalition. Those groups have all publicly denounced the Rouge NUP bill and requested MPs oppose the bill. Critics say the bill does not adhere to the standard of “ecological integrity” established by more than two decades of provincial regulation. The Government of Ontario is also not happy with the federal bill and is witholding the provincial lands that will make up 40 per cent of the planned Rouge NUP as a result. McKay said if given the opportunity to form the next federal government in the October 2015 election, the Liberal Party can “fix” the bill easily.

Police promise ‘heavy’ enforcement in attempt to reduce gridlock ANDREW PALAMARCHUK
apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
Toronto police have launched an anti-gridlock campaign that will focus on education and awareness for the next four weeks followed by “heavy” enforcement. Chief Bill Blair kicked off the initiative, dubbed ‘You Know you Shouldn’t...so Don’t’, at police headquarters Monday. “Much of the problem caused on our roadways is caused by us,
it’s caused by our citizens being inconsiderate in the way in which they park their car, they cross the street and the way in which they sometimes block an intersection,” Blair said. “We will undertake a public education campaign over the next four weeks and then beginning in the first week in January a very significant traffic enforcement and parking enforcement campaign will be undertaken that will include heavy enforcement on all our arterial roads
and also the towing of vehicles that park illegally.” The campaign will focus on five infractions: • motorists making illegal turns at intersections; • pedestrians stepping onto the roadway in advance of the green light or the walk signal; • vehicles blocking intersections; • motorists stopping in a live lane of traffic to get a coffee or pick
someone up; • failing to clear minor collisions from the roads (motorists should move the vehicles onto a side street, exchange information with the other involved drivers and go to a collision reporting centre in the city). “Each one of these behaviours results in a negative impact on the free flow of traffic, increasing travelling time or raising frustration levels of all our road users,” said Supt. Gord Jones of traffic services. “I would ask each person as they
prepare to travel that they focus all their energies on being the very best pedestrian, the best driver, the best cyclist that they can be by being professional, courteous and focused on the chosen task at hand.” Police plan to post five public service videos onto their website as part of the campaign. “We think it’s very important to educate the public,” Blair said. “... We believe that by modifying the behaviour of our citizens we can achieve both of those aims.”
