Pan Am pool a ‘dream come true’ for swimmers Games’ aquatics events to take place at Scarborough facility DAVID GROSSMAN scm@insidetoronto.com

pan am games legacy

When a group of Scarborough parents got together to form a swim club 60 years ago, they likely had no idea it would emerge as one of the best in the country. Tip of the hat to the Scarborough Swim Club, which has reached a milestone celebration of six decades, and things just got that much better for the future of this organization with new office space and handy access to the Pan Am Games pool – the most advanced aquatic training and competition facility in Canada. While the jubilation continues – more so for the swimmers and coaching staff, which will benefit from the $205-million facility at Morningside Avenue and Military Trail – the rewards will also come. “This pool will be huge for our club and will help continue to pave the way for the development of great swimmers,” said Carolyn Howard, club president. “We have lacked facilities in Scarborough, never had a 50-metre pool, and that made it difficult for competitive swimmers.” Howard knows there were times when the club struggled to survive. Determined to overcome the hardships and tough times, the club continued to stress that swimming was not just a sport, but an important life skill for youngsters. “We never gave up and now have a proper home,” added Howard, active in the sport as a former lifeguard, swimmer and parent of children who swim. “We are thrilled. This is an opportunity for all swimmers, regardless of their

ability, to become the best that they can be. For some, it’ll only be recreational and for others the hard work and discipline could see them go the competitive way and represent our country.” Scarborough’s Liz Warden knows that all too well. Warden, who competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and six years prior won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia, is among a long Photo/COURTESY list of provincial and national swimmers who got her start Scarborough Swim Club Hall of Fame members are Liz Warden and her mother Muriel, Darin at the Scarborough club – a Muma, Cindy Nicholas and Ron Watson. non-profit, parent-run orgaAs for Nicholas, all she did nization. over with a pool like this in tion and swims two kilometres “I started swimming at Scarborough,” said Muriel. was swim the English Channel each week. age six, really got good at it “Let’s not forget that not and Lake Ontario. “We had school pools at Laurier, Cedarbrae, Midland and Birchmount that served a purpose, but for competitive swimmers making the adjustment to a 50-metre pool – it was very tough.” As for the Pan Am pool, the 57-year old Nicholas ran short of words describing it. “It’s remarkable, just superb – I was drooling when I saw it for the first time,” she said. “It’s a dream come true for Scarborough and going to be fabulous for people training and the swim club. It’s certainly a wonderful facility and will certainly help swimmers improve their times.” Darren Ward, a former national team member who swam in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics, said he took over the Scarborough Swim Club head coach job when membership was low, there was no development system in place and the future looked bleak. “The city pools were decaying, there were so many distractions and other things for kids and we had to take a long serious look, re-focus our mandate, re-build and make it very clear what we wanted to achieve,” said Ward. “We’ve come a long way from the days when we only had 65 swimmers and now are well over 300 with many swimmers ranked among the top 25 in Canada for their respective age class. I see young talented swimmers every day and we want to give them the best opportunities to reach their potential. “I have competed in worldclass facilities in my travels, but when I first saw (the Pan Am pool), I had this great feeling, couldn’t believe what was right in front of me and just keep thinking about how it will benefit our club for another 60 years.”

T

he Pan Am Games are here and they are taking place right now, so it’s time for Torontonians to stop complaining and start showing off our great city to the rest of the world. We all need to look beyond the personal inconvenience and embrace the bigger picture. Yes, those HOV lanes are annoying but it will only be for a short period of time. The Games are bringing a lot of positives both economically and culturally. Let’s celebrate that. In today’s edition we’re looking at the Pan Am Games’ impact on businesses, sports groups and people in our communities. One of those positives was this weekend’s celebration on the Prince Edward Viaduct that saw the Pan Games Torch Relay ignite a our view Am community cauldron and the lighting up of the Luminous Veil. The Share your lighting on the veil is one of the permanent legacies brought support and many about by the Games which also excitement include a number of world-class athletic facilities. Also, athletes are thrilled to have the opportunity to show their stuff for hometown fans. It’s a rare opportunity for them, and one they will cherish. As Toronto sports fans, we need to share their excitement and show our support for our athletes. As Torontonians we should also be embracing the chance to show those visiting from the 41 countries competing in the Pan Am Games that we are a great city in which to live, work and play. The Toronto Region Board of Trade looks at the Games as a chance to further establish the city as epicentre of global business. “From the business community’s perspective, we have 350,000 people coming into the GTA. These are folks who if they like what they see, will be coming back, and telling their friends. So hopefully we can look at this as a point in time where we can really showcase what we’ve got,” said TRBOT president Janet De Silva. With athletic events now underway, there’s plenty of enthusiasm from volunteers and athletes. And if sports isn’t your thing, there’s no end of social and cultural events to enjoy during the Games. Enjoy! We have all of that information available to you at www.insidetoronto.com/panam

column

Dealing with Pan Am gridlock a step at a time I wish I could tell you I had a gold medal solution on how to deal with the inevitable Pan Am Games gridlock, but the best I could come up with is just grin and bear it. I get the feeling that won’t get me in the running for the silver either. Or bronze. Or tin for that matter. But hey, that’s my game plan and I’m sticking to it. traffic angst With Friday night’s opening ceremonies just a hop, skip and a jump away and traffic angst already reaching a fever pitch, all I know is carpooling with co-workers isn’t going to make it disappear. Nor is SUVpooling. Nor rickshawpooling. Nor is Pan An Games office pooling of any kind. That includes being picked up by the corporate limo. Or the corporate helicopter. Or the corporate blimp.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Everybody hopping on public transit isn’t the answer, either. But I’m not going to lose any sleep over the impending congestion. We all knew the moment it was announced Toronto had been awarded the Games that getting around wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. So I’ve decided to do the next best thing. I’ll make it a walk in the ravine instead. With a walk across a bridge thrown in, and a walk through a field, a walk on a front lawn or two, a walk down several alleys, a walk on the sidewalk and a walk through an occasional parking lot, too. Wherever it takes me and whatever it takes to get there, I’m walking to work during the Games, sports fans. Nothing’s going to stand in my way.

You won’t hear me joining in the expected road rage chorus no matter how chaotic things get on our streets, highways and byways. I’m going to let my feet do all the talking. making it fun Who says getting there is half the fun? I’m going to make it all the fun. My strategy is to take a different route every day of the Games. What’s more, I’m going to make things up as I go along. So that means you could see me head off the beaten path one day, then head back on the beaten path the next. It’ll all depend on my mood. I might take the underpass or the overpass. Or I could go under the overpass or over the underpass. I may go up hill and down dale or just as easily go up dale and down hill. You never know. I might stop at the junction or just as easily start

at the junction. Or I may just avoid the junction all together. I could travel hither, thither and yon, or yon, thither and hither. Or vice versa. Or versa vice. And what if I come across two roads diverging in a yellow wood, you ask? No sweat. I’m not going to worry about which one to choose. Or which is less travelled than the other. I plan to take both. Many times. Not even a fork in the road will wipe the smile off my face. If I come across one, I’ll scoop up that spoilsport without even skipping a beat and recycle it along the way for good measure. Same goes for a knife and spoon. So let the Games begin and the traffic, too. I’m ready for both. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Scarborough softball player excited to play at home Joey Lye says Canadian women’s team in contention for Pan Am gold MICHELE MCLEAN mmclean@insidetoronto.com Scarborough native Joey Lye is eager to step up to the plate at the 2015 Pan Am Games. Lye, a Birchmount Park Collegiate graduate from the exceptional athlete program, is a utility player on the Canadian women’s Pan Am softball team. She has competed in 12 Canadian championships since 2000 winning a medal in 11 of those events and earned a spot on the Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team in 2010 and won bronze at the ISF Women’s World Championship in Caracas, Venezuela and led all hitters with a .611 batting average at the 2012 ISF Women’s World Championship in Whitehorse. She also helped Canada earn a

pan am games athlete silver medal at the 2011 Pan Am Games in Mexico. Although Lye has experience, she said all of the team members have played at least one season at the national level. “I try to lead by example,” she said. “I hope I can make an impression on the others. I try to boost my own feelings of success and encourage everyone to give their all every day.” Having played around the world, Lye said she’s excited to be home for the Toronto Pan Am Games. “It’s a feeling you don’t get anywhere else,” she said. “I’ve never played at home on this big of a stage, a place where I grew up. It really adds to the feeling of pride.” On top of her excitement, she’ll have her family and friends at the game to cheer her on. The women’s team consists of 15 players. Games will be played at the President’s Choice Ajax Pan Am Ballpark. The Canadian women play preliminary games against Brazil

on Sunday, July 19, at 4:30 p.m.; Monday, July 20, at 7 p.m. against Cuba; Tuesday, July 21 at 7 p.m. against the U.S.; Wednesday, July 22, at 7 p.m. against the Dominican Republic; and Thursday, July 23, at 7 p.m. against Puerto Rico. The semifinals start on Friday, July 24, with the gold medal game scheduled for Sunday, July 26, at 11 a.m. Lye said the Canadian women’s main competitor the gold medal is the U.S. team. “Because of our experience, I think we have a pretty good chance,” she said. “We have the confidence, talent and the experience.” Lye grew up playing hockey and discovered softball as the sport that was played in the summer months when she couldn’t be on the ice. “Softball is face-paced, and both the men’s and women’s require a lot of talent,” she said, adding it’s just as much a mental game as a physical one. “Speed is a big part of the game,” she said. “It’s so exciting to gain bases by stealing or to drop a bunt when they’re not expecting it.” Lye attended Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts,

competing in both softball and ice hockey in NCAA Division III. She was a four-time All-NESCAC and NFCA New England Region First Team shortstop, and set five all-time school records in batting average (.457), runs scored (150), hits (211), total bases (267) and stolen

bases (62). In her senior season, she led the nation with a .563 batting average and set school records for batting average and stolen bases (22) in a season, and went on to become the 2009 NESCAC and ECAC Division III New England Player of the Year. She was also selected as an NFCA Second Team All-American in 2008. After completing her collegiate degree, she went on to serve two years coaching the Williams College softball and hockey teams, and recently completed her third season as head coach of Stevenson University’s softball team, in Maryland, where she also serves as an assistant hockey coach. She said she will have a bit of nervousness at the Toronto Pan Am Games as she will be playing at home in front of friends and family. “There will be a little bit of nerves underlying, but I’ll use that as excitement,” she said. “I’m very excited. I’m most excited about being able to play at home.”

The preliminary games for women’s softball will be played July 19 through 23; the semifinals starts on July 24; the final takes place July 26.

Scarborough Summer Fest gets a fresh relaunch MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com

“I feel she’s within us,” Nessa Babli, a community volunteer, said during a ceremony in what locals call St. Margaret’s Parkette. “In memory of her, I say, ‘Hello, Sandra, wherever you are.’” Sarah Sanyal, Summer Fest’s chairperson and a member of the SPUR board, said she misses Hutley, but she and other volunteers will keep working to make KGO a neighbourhood “everybody is proud of.” Sanyal said the market was renamed and expanded to make it more welcoming to all Toronto residents and, in the long run, to help change their impressions of East Scarborough. “We’re hoping lasting relationships are built here,” she added. As Sanyal’s husband Sandy turned burgers and hot dogs on the grill, the Juno Awardwinning Liberty Silver sang Let’s Stay Together to the crowd. After a second song, she

Friends think Sandra Hutley would approve of Scarborough Summer Fest, a new version of the Thursday afternoon community market she started in KingstonGalloway-Orton Park. Hutley died a few months ago as neighbourhood organizers were planning to revive the East Scarborough Festival Market, which had run out of funds. The market began in 2009 as a weekly summer gathering with a barbecue and vendors on the grounds of St. Margaret In-The-Pines Anglican Church on Lawrence Avenue. With help from a new group called SPUR (Social Pa r t n e r s h i p f o r Ur b a n Renewal), the market is back, with some fresh ideas and new supporters. But last Thursday, when it reopened for the season as Summer Fest, people paused to remember Hutley.

urged people to spend a few dollars on costume jewelry at the vendors’ tables, because, “then you get home and you get to twinkle a little bit.” Mitzie Hunter, the local MPP, said she was amazed to see the market thriving again through the hard work of community members. Hunter also announced Babli was launching a new program, Active Seniors Body and Mind, to encourage older neighbourhood residents to exercise both. Later, Babli explained this would be done through games and other activities, such as chair yoga. Most sessions will be organized during the Thursday markets at 2 p.m., but some will be indoors, visiting nearby seniors’ buildings. Scarborough Summer Fest (not associated with the Scarborough Summerfest which returns this weekend to the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto) continues Thursdays from 2 to 6 p.m. through Sept. 3.

hose of us who’ve been in and around Toronto and its constituent municipalities the last couple of decades probably don’t need the Fraser Institute to tell us what terrible problems amalgamation caused. Before 1998, Toronto was six cities: North York and Scarborough and Etobicoke sprawling to the north and east and west, the tiny municipalities of East York and York huddling on the edge of old, urban Toronto. When then-premier Mike Harris and his municipal affairs minister Al Leach announced plans to amalgamate us all, everyone in Toronto not connected with the governing Progressive Conservative party knew instinctively it was a bad idea. It wouldn’t save money. It would make governing these cities of neighbourhoods more difficult, not easier. It would, we were sure, be largely unpleasant. We were, in the main,

david nickle the city right. And now the Fraser Institute, in a study cutelysubtitled “Breaking up is hard to do,” suggests that the biggest reason for Toronto to stay together is precisely for that reason: reestablishing Toronto’s old municipal boundaries, or indeed new ones that might be more rational from a 21st century perspective, would be a big job. The question is, do the problems that Toronto has now warrant that kind of work? If we were talking a year ago in the dying days of the Ford administration it would be an easy one to answer. The shotgun marriage of municipalities had descended to such a dysfunctional state that suburban Toronto had elected Rob Ford to its top job. And although the mayoralty has passed to steadier hands, it is too soon to say whether

the wounds of amalgamation have healed. It is probably also too soon to say that they haven’t healed, or that they won’t. But as the Fraser Institute’s report notes, other municipalities have managed the split — and Toronto might too. In the meantime, it might also be healthy to recognize that there exists the simple possibility of separation: that the bikeriding, latte-sipping denizens of the downtown core might be able to debate in a different room from the suburban, fiscal conservatives of the old suburban communities, and each might elect a mayor according to their needs and aspirations. Sometimes, there’s nothing to spur compromise in a relationship like the serious contemplation of its end.

Its future was once in doubt, now Bike Share Toronto has announced plans to expand its operations. The once cash-strapped bike share program which was handed over to the Toronto Parking Authority last year now has 4,000 members. This week it announced Metrolinx will contribute $5 million to double the bike share’s offerings to 2,000 bikes and 160 docking stations by the end of 2016. Under the terms of the deal, the new rides will appear not just in Toronto but in other Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area municipalities which want them. It’s currently unknown where the new docking locations will be, but Metrolinx plans to install them near transit stations in dense areas where cycling demand is strong. It appears Toronto council will approve expansion of bike lanes recently installed on Adelaide and Richmond street.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT The painted lanes were added last year as part of a pilot project. This week, a majority of city council will, in all likelihood, vote to support a staff recommendation to extend the Adelaide and Richmond lanes west to Parliament Street. If the decision is approved, construction will take place after the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. NEW TRAFFIC SIGNS to drivers whelp

More traffic signs will appear at the new Queen’s Quay in an effort to make the re-configured street more understandable to befuddled drivers. The roadway opened up last month following years of construction with expanded sidewalks, a new cycle track and streetcar service moved to the median. With all the changes and the subsequent confusion it has created for some, Waterfront Toronto announced it will soon add Do Not Enter signs so cars don’t enter the street-

car right-of-way. In addition, the agency has added even more signs along Queen’s Quay to get people used to the street’s new layout. YOUR MANNERS ON TTC DURING GAMES wMIND

In an effort to promote transit etiquette during the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games the TTC has released several short online videos starring its infamous Morphs. The colourful – though somewhat creepy – characters mime various examples of “courteous commuter” behaviour, from proper disposal of a newspaper (hint: you don’t throw it on the floor) to keeping one’s bag off the seat. The TTC doesn’t run many etiquette campaigns; its official line is it doesn’t seek to influence customer behaviour. Y ou can see the videos on the TTC’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/ TorontoTransitCommission. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. His column appears on Thursday. Chinese Cultural Centre hosts Summerfest

Musical entertainment to be provided by Scarborough Town Jazz Festival performers MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Scarborough Summerfest, a weekend of festivals within a festival, is returning to the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto. Along with the multiculturalism of Scarborough people know about, this weekend’s Summerfest contains a daylong celebration of the Hakka, a people from China who embraced a multicultural life more than most. As performances at the Sheppard Avenue facility on Saturday, July 11, will show, the Hakka mastered the steel pan, the ukelele, Reggae singing, Bollywood dancing and other cultural activities from countries where migration took them. Hakka people in Greater Toronto want to pass the common core of their culture to future generations which “may not recognize what our

ancestors went through,” said Penny Williams, a member of the Hakka Her itage Alliance. “We recognize what the culture has done for us to succeed in this world.” Summerfest actually starts with an opening night of multicultural performances from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 10 at the Centre’s P.C. Ho Theatre. Like almost every event of the weekend, this evening of music, gymnastics, martial arts and dance is free, but organizers suggest getting advance tickets because seating is limited. The Hakka Festival, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, features some unique foods and discussion of the traditions of people who left Ganzhou, China for places such as Trinidad, India, Mauritius, and Malaysia. Its only paid event is the screening of a movie, Blue Brave, from 2 to 4 p.m., which

is $10 for adults, $5 for children. The participation of Hakka people, which started last year, “makes the event much more meaningful,” CCCGT Chairperson Dr, Ming-tat Cheung said during a press conference, predicting this Summerfest will attract a large audience from outside of Scarborough for the first time. On Sunday, July 12, the weekend finishes with the TO Food Fest, from 1 to 6 p.m. under a huge tent on the grass outside the centre, which is on the corner of Sheppard and Progress avenues. Music will be provided by Scarborough Town Jazz Festival. “We have some of the most important artists in the city performing for us,” Joachim Nanz, one of the participants, said. Pan Am Path links city LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com Taking the path of least resistance would never have allowed artist Devon Ostrum and a team of creative trailblazers to build a more connected Toronto. After curating Arrivals Canada, a series of multimedia projects focused on celebrating the stories of new citizens, Ostrum and his colleagues started brainstorming ways to uniquely link art and sport leading up to the Pan Am Games. Connections “There’s a split between the downtown core and the inner suburbs,” Ostrum said. “We wanted to figure out ways to create not only physical connections, but also social and cultural connections.” The idea was born to build a legacy path that would fill in existing gaps and create

one continuous trail from Brampton to Pickering. After eight months of behind-the-scenes selling, pitching, making mistakes and reformulating, the team had the Pan Am Path initiative approved by Toronto City Council in a 37-1 vote in July 2013. Ostrum formed the non-profit organization Friends of the Pan Am Path to co-ordinate arts programming along the 84 kilometre multi-use trail, and put out an open call for submissions in four different languages. Fourteen ideas were chosen from more than 230 applications to form the basis of the Art Relay, a series of cultural events and celebrations that have been animating hotspots along the trail since May. From graffiti artists painting life into the concrete pillars at Underpass Park to discovering indigenous heritage through the First Story tours at Fort York, the Relay encourages Torontonians to see their city through a new

lens. Brent Chamberlain, chair of the Path said people are experiencing the treasures of Toronto’s diversity in a meaningful way. “Public art turns spaces into places. It gets people out into the community and away from their TVs,” he said. Poet Renee McPhee, who shared her words at the Live Arts Festival event, applauded the organizers. “Poetry has saved me in many ways. It’s good to have a moment and a space to share that with other people,” she said. Events are scheduled throughout the Games and the grand finale, Maadaadizi/ Summer Journeys, will end the Relay’s journey across the city in Rouge Hill Aug. 15. Scarborough business greets Games with anticipation MiKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com No one in east Scarborough, it seems, is expecting a bonanza of customers from 40 foreign lands. But some merchants have modest hopes that the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games, which officially open this Friday, means more money in the cash register. Uma Santhiramoorthy believes the Pan Ams will be good for his pub, the Fossil and Haggis, which is almost directly across Morningside Avenue from the new Pan Am Aquatic Centre, which will see swimming and fencing events taking place. Action opened Thursday, July 9, with synchronized swimming. A group from the Games has booked part of his dining area four hours each day, for around 40 to 50 people, he said, adding that on the last day of the Games, he’ll serve 100 people upstairs. The landlord of the plaza beside the University of Toronto Scarborough campus is letting Santhiramoorthy erect a tent in the parking lot for the first time. As for disadvantages resulting

pan am games economics from the Games, Santhiramoorthy can see none, since the City of Toronto promised him there will be no road closures. At Reginos Pizza, another business in the plaza, manager Tharsana Selvaratnam isn’t so sure the Pan Ams will bring in more business. “Every customer who comes here always gives us advice. They’re saying it’s going to be very busy,” she said last week. “We’re planning to have some extra employees, just in case.” Southeast of the Pan Am centre in Highland Creek Village, there was some anticipation of the Games as an opportunity. “That’s the whole hope, right?” asked Cico Castillo, who was preparing special fixed price menus for his restaurant, Highland Steak & Frites at Old Kingston and Morrish roads. “Traffic is better than no traffic.” (The restaurant was called North of Mexico until recently - which may have given it more of a Pan

area. “I don’t think they were ready for ethnic food.”) There’s a lot of Latinos coming to the Games but they also want to try what Canada has to offer, Castillo said. Across the street, however, the manager of the Kilt Pub saw no possible benefit from the Games. “It’s going to destroy the business,” Maria Cholewa said as she served some afternoon patrons. “We struggle with the parking here. People are going to park here and walk (to the Pan Am centre).” One of Cholewa’s customers, Anne Martin, argued the Games weren’t publicized properly. Advertising should show the actual sports involved, and then “people would get more worked up about it,” she said. Roller speed skating for the Games will be at St. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School, on Military Trail just west of the plaza with Reginos and the Fossil, but aquatic sports and Scarborough’s other Pan Am events, including fencing and the modern pentathlon, are at the sports centre. Highland Creek Village Business Association planned to meet this week to review and finalize plans for Pan Am, and for the Parapan Games, which will have Colonel Danforth Park in the Highland Creek Valley as a wheelchair tennis venue. “We’re ready and able to meet and greet our international guests, and we do expect increased business, especially for our local restaurants: Fratelli’s, Steak & Frites and Ted’s Diner,” said Susan Fraser, a spokesperson. “Most importantly, we warmly welcome all of these amazing athletes and visitors and we encourage them to ‘come and check us out.’”

Emotional torch relay pass at Variety Village Megan Sherwin passes torch to brother of her late friend and teammate, Cassidy Sheng It was an emotional moment for para-swimmer Megan Sherwin and the family of the late Cassidy Sheng during the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay Sunday morning in Scarborough. Sherwin passed the torch to Aaron Sheng, Cassidy’s brother, as the relay made it’s way through Variety Village on Danforth Avenue near Birchmount Road Sunday morning. Prior to Sunday’s relay, Sherwin told The Scarborough

pan am games torch run Mirror that taking part in the torch run would be a bitter sweet moment for her as she reflected on the life of her late friend Cassidy. “I wanted to represent Cassidy,” Sherwin, a student at Birchmount Park Collegiate, told The Mirror. Cassidy lost a gruelling struggle with cancer that claimed her left leg, a part

of her lung, and began to eat away at her spine. Cassidy died Jan. 10. Sherwin passed the torch to Cassidy’s brother Aaron this morning. “Cassidy taught me to live life to the fullest, take risks, and have no regrets,” she said. It was especially fitting the torch pass took place at Variety Village where both Sherwin and Sheng trained. “I’m an ambassador for

Variety Village. I want to tell people here you are always included and you are never looked at for what you can’t do but what you can do,” said Sherwin. “You always feel welcome here. It’s truly a one-of-akind place,” The torch relay continued through Scarborough on Sunday with a number of stops scheduled including the Toronto Zoo, the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, Dorset Park and L’Amoreaux Community Centre. The torch relay in Scarborough was capped by a community celebration at the Pan Am Aquatics Centre, where a community cauldron was lit by retired Toronto FC player and member of the Scarborough Walk of Fame Dwayne De Rosario. – With files from Sam Juric

De Rosario comes home to light Games flame MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Dwayne De Rosario lit the Pan Am flame on stage in Scarborough, and in doing that he came home again. The Toronto FC all-time leading scorer grew up on Mornelle Court, just steps away across Morningside Avenue from a pre-Games celebration Sunday beside the Pan Am Aquatics Centre. He once trained on a hill behind it. Did he ever think there could be such a sports facility so close by? “No chance,” said De Rosario, adding his life as a competitive athlete could have been spent in the pool, had the huge facility been finished many years earlier, “I might be a swimmer, or a professional diver.” Recently retired as a pro soccer player, De Rosario is also a former Pan Am athlete, part of the Canadian U-23 team at the 1999 Games in Winnipeg. After lighting the

opportunity to showcase a lot of our up-and-coming talent.” De Rosario said he was going to see as many sports as he could - not only soccer but track, cycling, basketball and rugby. “Go see sports that you don’t get to see often,” he advised. De Rosario’s “awesome experience” of striding to the stage with the Pan Am torch on Sunday, July 5, afternoon included the moment it was handed to him by his father, Tony, “my greatest mentor growing up.” Tony De Rosario later said it is like coming back to where everything started with his “fantastic” son. “I wanted to cry a river, but I held it together, thank God,” he told reporters. “He started from just about nothing and became someone.” The fire the De Rosarios and many other torch bearers carried through Scarborough was not just any flame, the

Hundreds watching and playing by the Aquatics Centre were energized from the moment hip-hop legend Maestro Fresh Wes - another proud booster of Scarborough - took the stage and urged its people to make some noise. It’s awesome the Games are happening in Toronto. but they are starting right here in your part of the city, he told the crowd. “To me, that’s a blessing,” Maestro said, before lifting children on to the stage for his breakout signature hit, Let Your Backbone Slide. People waiting for the flame were also taught a dance called the Pachi Wiggle, a clapping and marching step inspired by the Games’ porcupine mascot. Pickering-Scarborough East MPP Tracy MacCharles, in thanking the celebrants, said the Pan Am torch represents “commitment to whatever we do, and never giving up.” Earlier the torch was driven to the Toronto Zoo, where Max Domi, voted Best Forward at the World Juniors Hockey Tournament in January, carried it from the main entrance to the Waterside Theatre. where Domi stood with the flame next to an agitated bald eagle, and then between the Patchi and the zoo’s Da Mao giant panda mascot. The torch is a lot heavier

than you’d think, observed Domi, who said the Games are a huge event for the city, and the training and preparation behind them is remarkable. “Especially as an athlete, I love cheering on my own country,” he said. L i a m , 9 , a b oy f ro m Pickering, made his own torch and then got a selfie with Domi, whose skills he admires. Liam agreed the Games are exciting. “It’s sort of like the Olympics but it’s way closer to home,” he said. “I’m probably gonna watch it a lot.” At the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto at Progress and Sheppard avenues in Scarborough, Jason Wong, born and raised in Scarborough and now a member of its Apex Martial Arts Academy called the Games “a tapestry of different cultures coming together.” Wong was a Pan Am athlete too, a Canadian competitor in Wushu competitions last year in Costa Rica.

History runs deep at Nova Ristorante, though you wouldn’t know it from the sleek bar and modern furniture. The entire restaurant has been updated, along with the menu, to offer an elegant fine-dining experience, in the location where the famous Pizza Nova chain was born 52 years ago. Like Pizza Nova, Nova Ristorante is committed to only using the best ingredients — you won’t find any ingredients that weren’t available in 1963, meaning there are no fillers or additives. From sauces that are made in-house to homemade pasta made with the finest olive oil, you can really taste the difference. The restaurant serves a variety of pastas, chicken, lamb and steak dishes, and of course pizzas that focus on quality, really letting the ingredients shine through. The flame-grilled lamb chops are made with New Zealand lambs, which are never fed any growth promotants or antibiotics and are raised in large pastures where they are able to spread out and graze uninterrupted, resulting in healthier, stress-free lambs. Served with a side of Ontario russet mashed potatoes and sautéed carrots, the lamb chops taste better than you can imagine. Nova Ristorante only uses chickens raised on a special diet free of antibiotics, animal byproducts,

hormones and growth enhancers. The chickens are raised in a humane environment with double the space of mass-produced birds, plus freedom to roam outdoors. The result is signature dishes like the chicken a la nova and chicken parmigiana that leave patrons wanting more. For those looking for quick meals, Nova Ristorante also has an express menu. Call ahead, and they’ll have your order hot and ready for when you arrive. Also, the entire restaurant menu is available for take out and delivery every night until midnight or later. Guildwood gardens tour this weekend SAM JURIC sjuric@insidetoronto.com A number of Guildwood residents are opening their backyards to the public this weekend as a part of the Guildwood Village Association’s annual garden tour. A Day in the Gardens of Guildwood will showcase 14 different gardens within the community featuring various themes. “It’s a once-a-year opportunity for people to see the gardens of Guilwood and a great way to get ideas for your own homes,” said Gerard Baribeau, co-organizer of the event. Baribeau has been helping to put on the event for the past 13 years. Over the years the annual tour has shown the beauty of more than 100 local gardens. The event sees between

600 and 800 people tour the gardens of the neighbourhood every year. “The tour is a chance to show the beauty of Guildwood Village,” said Judy Baribeau, co-organizer of the tour. The tour makes an effort to switch things up and offers the opportunity for new gardens to be shown every year. Tour guides are available for a purchase of five dollars. The profits generated will support ongoing beautification projects being planned throughout the community. “I like seeing the reactions of people when they see the gardens, especially the little kids,” said Gerard Baribeau. The tour of Guildwood’s gardens will begin at 1 p.m. and run through until 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 12. For more information on this weekend’s garden tour, please visit www.guildwood. on.ca

Community councillors approve traffic lights on St. Clair Avenue Scarborough councillors have voted to support a new set of traffic lights on St. Clair Avenue requested by local residents for years. The lights at the intersection of Santamonica Boulevard are not necessary, according to studies done by the City of Toronto. That didn’t stop Michelle Berardinetti, the local councillor, and Nicole Peres, principal of St. Joachim Catholic School from making the request to Scarborough Community Council last week. Peres said students crossing St. Clair in front of the school can’t always see traffic coming and the street is congested and dangerous at times. Berardinetti said residents have made many requests for traffic lights on the stretch of St. Clair between Warden Avenue and Birchmount

Road. Staff have studied the intersections of Santamonica Boulevard, Elfreda Boulevard and Pengally Court in front of St. Joachim, finding none of them warranted signals, but Berardinetti argued the Santamonica report was “the least negative.” The signals would cost $160,000, money staff said is currently not in the 2015 budget. Scarborough councillors also approved a set of lights at Kennedy Road and Radnor Avenue, south of Lawrence, as well as the removal of a pedstrian refuge island south of the intersection. In a report, staff said lights at Radnor weren’t technically necessary either, but “prevailing motor vehicle speeds on this section of Kennedy Road are excessive which makes it unsafe for predestrians to

continue using the pedestrian refuge island.” The report said crossing the intersection, where there is a bingo hall and a TTC bus stop, is “particularly problematic” at night, when the bingo hall’s evening program ends. The total installation and removal cost, $180,000, is also not found in the current city budget, the report said. Both decisions must be confirmed by votes at Toronto council. names federal election candidate wNDP

New Democrats in Scarborough-Guildwood have given a first-time candidate the task of unseating the longest-serving MP in Scarborough. Laura Casselman was acclaimed on Thursday, June 25 at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church on Lawrence Avenue

East as the riding’s NDP contender. A communications professional who has worked for a Toronto public relations firm, Casselman said she grew up in the riding and graduated from the University of Toronto Scarborough. “I grew up in a household where money was tight,” she said in an interview this week, adding Federal NDP Leader Tom Mulcair “understands struggling families like mine.” Scarborough-Guildwood’s incumbent is Liberal MP John McKay, first elected in 1997 for what was then a riding called Scarborough East. McKay, his party’s environment critic, will be running for a seventh term. To win in the election expected this fall, however, Casselman must also beat Conservative Chuck Konkel.

Michael Baboolal, 18, is one of many artists selected to perform at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Opening Ceremony this Friday night.

Scarborough dancer brings his passion to opening ceremony SAM JURIC sjuric@insidetoronto.com

T

GIANT TIGER ON LAWRENCE HOSTS GRAND REOPENING CELEBRATION On July 4, Giant Tiger located at 375 Lawrence Ave. E. hosted a grand reopening celebration for the newly renovated store. The community came out to enjoy a barbecue, face painting, drums and more community fun throughout the day. Proceeds from the barbecue went to the Scarborough Women’s Hospital, which provides information, education and support services to assist women in the transition away from abuse, isolation and poverty towards economic and emotional independence.

hree years ago, Wexford Collegiate graduate Michael Baboolal accidently became a dancer. “I guess my teacher saw something special in me and I was invited into the performance dance program,” said Baboolal. Fresh on the scene, Baboolal only began dancing seriously at 16. He had experience in singing and acting but the art of dance was unfamiliar to him so he decided to take dance as an elective. The Scarborough native has come a long way since. Baboolal will be representing his community of Scarborough in a choreographed group, hip-hop dance routine at the Pan Am Opening Ceremony on July 10. “I’m excited to be a part of the Pan Am Games because it showcases creativity, athletics and everything that Canada has to offer as a country,” said Baboolal. He applied online to join the opening ceremonies and was selected to audition for the event.

pan am games entertainment “You have to have pride for where you come from,” he said. Baboolal is most excited to see the track and field events at the Pan Am Games. The 18-year-old recently finished his first year at Ryerson University where he is pursuing a degree in the school’s dance program. The dancer commutes nearly four hours daily to Ryerson in order to master his art. At first, the lack of financial opportunity discouraged him but an unrelenting passion for dance swayed Baboolal to make dance his chosen career path. “I just thought, if you love it, you just have to go for it,” he said. Motivated by a thirst to excel at his craft, Baboolal applied for the Pan Am Opening Ceremony to broaden his dance experience. “I wanted to get my face out there and it’s a great way to celebrate what’s really great about

Canada,” Baboolal said. Baboolal attributes his dedication to dance and his willingness to take risks to the wise words of Jose Costa, his English teacher at Wexford Collegiate. “He used to always say, ‘If you want something bad enough, you’ll get it. Don’t wait to be inspired, go and inspire others,’” said Baboolal recalled. “I always wanted to pursue art. It was always just a matter of where and if it was even a feasible option.” As if preparing for the Opening Ceremonies wasn’t daunting enough, the young talent has also been assisting in the choreography of Summerland, a musical that will be featured at Toronto’s Fringe Festival until July 12. Baboolal sees the Opening Ceremony of the Pan Am Games as a way to connect people through varying mediums. “Sport and art are like universal languages that bring people together,” he said.

>>>from page 1 at the Pan Am Games. And University of Toronto Scarborough Tennis Centre (131 Old Kingston Rd.) is where the six-day wheelchair tennis competition will be played during the Parapan Am Games. UTSC’s athletics director Scott McRoberts will be running the event with the help of a 16-member committee made up of students, staff and faculty. “The cool thing is our campus will actually help put on that sporting event, unlike other sporting events where we don’t have that control,” he said. UTSC is also hosting women’s baseball practice at it’s diamond in the Highland Creek valley, while L’Amoreaux Sports Complex

People living near the Pan Am Aquatics Centre on Morningside Avenue can no longer park or even stop their cars on their streets. That’s because the city has amended traffic bylaws to prohibit stopping on 10 streets surrounding the facility, at 875 Morningside Ave., which will host seven competitions during the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. “Unfortunately, we can’t say: you live here so we’ll ignore you being on the street,” said Tracy Chamberlain of the parking enforcement unit. “Our policy is tag everyone fairly and equitably or tag no one at all.” The temporary bylaw changes were implemented following a couple of community meetings where local politicians and residents shared concerns. “Our primary goal is to keep traffic moving and keep the residents safe,” Chamberlain said. Three parking enforcement officers will be working in the neighbourhood around the clock along with more police officers on traffic points. “A lot of thought and effort has gone into making not only the Hames successful but the traffic successful,” said Chamberlain. Up to 2,000 parking spots will be available to spectators at the nearby University of Toronto Scarborough on Military Trail. The university,

pan am games venue (100 Silver Springs Blvd.) is hosting softball practice. Aquatics competitions are high demand events at TPASC, which has seating for 6,000 in the aquatics area. The diving competition is slated for July 10 to 13 followed by the swimming competition July 14 to 18. Synchronized swimming takes place July 9 and 11. TPASC, which opened in September, is the largest sport facility built for the Games and represents the largest investment ever in Canadian amateur sport history. The facility closed to the public in mid-May in order to prepare for the Games and will re-open Sept. 15.

Its aquatics centre includes two internationally sanctioned 10-lane 50-metre pools, a fivemetre deep diving tank with three-metre, five-metre, 7.5metre and 10-metre platforms and dry-land dive training facilities.

“We are the single largest games site for the Games in terms of amount of sports being played,” McRoberts said of UTSC. To foster the Pan Am spirit, the university is distributing more than 800 Pan Am tickets to students and local youth. Various university departments bought more than 300 tickets that are being given to students daily through a social media campaign started on Canada Day. The university also has 500 tickets through a grant from a charitable group called Friend of the Games. Those tickets are being distributed to youth in the community. McRoberts encouraged Scarborough residents to embrace the Games. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s in your backyard. The world is coming to your community,” he said. “Get out and enjoy the fun of cultural diversity and art and sport.”

Games can showcase city: Board of Trade DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com What is an event like the Pan Am Games worth to a city? W h e n To r o n t o w a s awarded the 2015 Pan Am/ ParaPan Games, back in 2010, the answer at a packed-solid victory party filled with politicians, media and business leaders at Labbatt Canada’s waterfront offices was pretty clear: The Games were worth quite a lot. Then-deputy mayor Joe Pantalone effused: “This is as big as it gets. You get 10,000 athletes, 15,000 direct jobs, 260,000 visitors… It shows Toronto has turned a corner.” It was hard to impossible to find anyone saying anything different. The Pan Am Games that begin this week and continue until July 26 were to provide a massive boost to the construction of sports facilities, housing and transportation infrastructure.

pan am games economics Those 260,000 visitors would bring tourism dollars. Toronto would be on the map. Benjamin Tal and Andrew Grantham, economists from the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, quantified those benefits in a 2013 report — finding Pantalone’s back-ofnapkin numbers if anything too conservative. They have estimated 26,000 new jobs, and 350,000 international tourists coming into town for the event. tourism Indeed, the Pan Am Games in Canada ought to be enough for a significant Ontario Gross Domestic Product boost, to the tune of $260 million, from tourism spending alone. What could go wrong? Well, for one thing, there is the experience of London, England, during the 2012 Summer Olympics. Then, for-

eign tourism actually fell. The Vancouver Winter Olympics two years earlier did better. But with ticket sales for the Pan Am Games lower than anticipated and warnings about traffic congestion and crowds still dominating news reports, there are worries. John Kiru, Executive Director of the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (TABIA), said the anxiety is real. “Business Improvement Areas are saying ‘What are we going to do with these games?’” said Kiru. “People are recollecting the London, England experience, the hol-

lowing out of the downtown area, where people stayed away because of the negative concerns…. Really the people that are most concerned are the smaller shops.” Kiru said that many businesses in the downtown core, particularly in high-traffic areas like the underground PATH system, are worried about what will happen to their bottom line if workers in the bank towers on Bay Street take up the Pan Am Games’ suggestion to work from home rather than brave the congestion. “That’s going to affect those little places, those restaurants in the PATH,” said Kiru. “If they stay away, that is going to impact those guys who place themselves based on the downtown route. Summers are tough enough, and now you compounded that by urging people to stay away.” To try and turn this around, TABIA is taking matters into their own hands — creating a playful little promotion

called Show Us Your Game Face (showusyourgameface. com). It’s a contest asking people to take and post selfies of themselves patronizing local establishments in four categories (Dining Out, In the HoodBIA, At Attractions and At the Games). Kiru is hoping that social media will do for small businesses what the Games themselves may not be able to. “It (has been) hard,” he admitted. “We’ve had to put some dollars in, we’ve reached out for corporate sponsors.” Getting past the level of small business, there is perhaps unsurprisingly more proper optimism about the economic benefits of the Games to the city. Toronto Region Board of Trade President Janet De Silva sees the Pan Am Games as an opportunity to showcase Toronto’s businesses to a PanAmerican market. She noted that business leaders from North, South and Central

America will be converging on Toronto — whether as attendees or in sponsorship roles. And this week the board is the helping sponsor for the Toronto Global Forum: The Pan American Edition. As to the challenges faced by smaller businesses, De Silva urged patiencee “I’m hoping those businesses that are impacted…. I would encourage them to stay positive about the longerterm benefits for the community at large,” she said. “...From the business community’s perspective, we have 350,000 people coming into the GTA. These are folks who if they like what they see, will be coming back, and telling their friends. So hopefully we can look at this as a point in time where we can really showcase what we’ve got.”

Mirror reporter carries Pan Am Games Torch FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com

The energy inside the Regent Park Aquatic Centre was heating up as the 19 Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games torchbearers – myself included – prepared for the relay Monday morning. As an employee of Metroland Media Toronto, a signature supporter of the Torch Relay, I had the honour of being selected as one of five company torchbearers to run a 200-metre segment in the days leading up to the start of the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. After finding out in March I was selected, I eagerly awaited being part of a once-in-lifetime experience as Toronto geared up to host the large sporting events. We torchbearers arrived at the Dundas and Sumach

streets aquatic centre several hours before our start time to change into our uniforms, familiarize ourselves with how to old the 65-centimetre long, 1.2-kilogram aluminum torch, and do some fun stretches as we chit-chatted and got to know one another. Before we knew it, it was time to head outside and onto Dundas Street for some group shots (and pictures with Pachi, the Games’ mascot) before we boarded a bus which would drop us off at our various start locations. It was around this time some people’s nerves started to kick in, once they saw the large convoy of police and media vehicles which would surround us. But there was also a lot of excitement inside the small shuttle, and a smile seemed to be permanently marked on each face.

CONSUMER FEATURE

Why choose a Realtor? A Realtor has the experience and knowledge to help you find the home of your dreams Entering the real estate market is both a daunting and exciting experience. You spend your time envisioning the perfect scenario, but a home is the most expensive purchase you can make, and finding the right one to meet your needs should be left in the hands of a professional. Like any professional, a Realtor needs to go to school before they can secure their real estate license. Realtors spend years learning about the importance of economics, demographics and geography on real estate values, how land and property are registered, municipal planning and land use regulations, the construction of homes and buildings, how to determine the value of a property, current trends and issues that impact residential and commercial real estate. This information isn’t available to everyone and can help sell a home quickly. Even after they’ve obtained their real estate license, many Realtors continue to update their skills to be on top of an ever-changing real estate market. It’s not all about statistics and school courses. Realtors bring years of experience to the table to help guide new clients. They know the ins and

outs of the desired neighbourhoods, from the demographics of the area to the closest schools. This kind of knowledge only comes with being tapped into the real estate industry. Once they’ve helped you find a home that meets all of your wants and needs, Realtors use their knowledge of the neighbourhood to help get you the best deal. You may know that a comparable home in the neighbourhood was on the market for $600,000, but a Realtor would know how long it was on the market, any upgrades the owners made and the actual selling price, which can help when making an offer. Whether you are putting your home up for sale or looking to purchase, a Realtor has a network of professionals to help you meet your goals. Over time, Realtors develop a roster of contractors, decorators, plumbers and electricians with whom they’ve had a positive experience. You don’t need to know everything about buying, selling or even renovating when you enter the real estate market, as long as you hire a professional who does.
