Local players inspired by World Cup ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Scarborough-born World Cup soccer player Jonathan de Guzman is an inspiration to many youngsters at a local notfor-profit soccer club. “He gives the kids a lot of hope that they’ll be able to make it,” said Michelle Kennedy of the Scarborough Blizzard Youth Soccer Club. “For a lot of them it’s recreation, but for a lot of them they’d like to see themselves on the world stage so I’m hoping in the future maybe we’ll see a couple of these house league kids there.”

On June 13, de Guzman made history as he was named to the Netherlands starting 11 for their opening World Cup game against Spain. The Netherlands crushed the defending 2010 World Cup champions 5-1 in that match, and de Guzman played in the midfield until he was substituted out in the 62nd minute. The 26-year-old, who began his minor soccer career with the North Scarborough club before moving to Holland at age 12 to continue his development, also started in the Netherlands second match of Group B play against Australia on June 18. Holland won that game 3-2 and de Guzman played for 78 minutes. “It’s encouraging, it’s nice

Toronto agencies will be hiring young women to develop “cyber self defence by girls for girls,” thanks to a federal grant announced this week. T h e g ov e r n m e n t s a i d $174,000 in Status of Women funds will be spent over two years to identify forms of cyber violence against women and girls in Toronto – including cyberbullying, cyberstalking and Internet luring – and forming strategies to stop it. Scarborough agency East Metro Youth Services joins Metrac, which is based downtown. as partners in a project, led by St. Stephen’s Community House, which will hire women ages 18 to 24 to speak with youth who have experienced cyber violence first-hand, said Carly Kalish, a therapist for EMYS. Status of Women Minister Dr. Kellie Leitch announced the project Monday, saying ending violence against women and girls is a priority for the Conservative government. “We are taking action by working with skilled, local organizations across the country on projects that will prevent cyberviolence and make Canada’s online communities safer for everyone.” Kalish said young women who experience cyber violence can seek free walk-in counselling at EMYS’s Markham Road offices on weekday afternoons.

Condo plan near UTSC could fill student housing need MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com A condominium project across from the University of Toronto Scarborough, which enjoyed sales success by marketing units as student and faculty housing, was inspired by developers who found it hard as students to rent housing near the campus. Husband and wife Thomas Liu and Jessica Wang of the Lemine Investment Group met while at UTSC, but struggled with the limited housing options nearby, some of them not legal or clean, said Pouyan Safapour, vice president of Devron Developments and spokesperson for the project. Safapour said the housing shortage also left an impression on his brother Safa, another UTSC alumnus and a partner in the proposed 26-storey building at the corner of Ellesmere Road and Morningside Avenue. “They went through the same struggle that other students go through” at UTSC,

The Academy condominium project at Morningside and Ellesmere is proposed to be built near the UTSC campus.

and later decided “there has to be an opportunity to fix the situation,” said Safapour, who attended another university. He added UTSC is not unique in having a population growing faster than its residence space, but The Academy in its promotional materials took aim at investors “who wish to rent or lease out to students or faculty.” The campus next door to the long-vacant property, it said, was “bursting with

more than 12,000 students but currently only providing on-campus residences for 769,” and therefore “offered purchasers the reassurance of long term demand and positive cash flow from Day 1.” Starting on June 20, sales of the 339 suites, some bought fully furnished, were closed speedily over two and a half weeks in an office on Yonge Street in North York. It may be the fastest a condominium building of such size has sold out in Scarborough, Safapour

said. Residents of the singlefamily Highland Creek area east of the campus have complained for years about homes illegally converted there into rooming houses for students. Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser had the city assign bylaw enforcers to the area and formed a working group with UTSC administrators and homeowners. Campus growing House prices in the neighbourhood have been rising as buildings are added to the campus. The university, meanwhile, continues with townhouse units as its only on-campus housing, requiring planned shuttle service to area grocery stores because there is no student cafeteria or meal plan. It has promised a new residence building with about 750 units, in which more traditional elements, such as

meals, will be included. “We’re currently in full planning for that residence,” said UTSC CAO Andrew Arifuzzaman, who expects the university will issue a request for proposal in 2015. He said the builders of The Academy, despite their marketing, have no connection to the campus. “They see a business opportunity, but I don’t think it’s stepping into what the university does,” Arifuzzaman said this week. Paul Ainslie, councillor for the ward west of the UTSC, said the proposal, which requires four minor variances but has raised no strong objections from the city’s planners, would fit the area and clean up a property “that’s been an eyesore” for as long as he’s been in office. The highrise, he said, is similar to another builder’s plan for 3070 Ellesmere, one which had been approved but “fell apart” in 2006. The Academy wasn’t just meant to house students; professionals who work at the

Centenary hospital campus and some retired people from the area also bought units, said Ainslie. Ainslie was also pleased with retail proposed for the ground floor - Safapour said a small grocery store, a coffee shop and a bank are all possible - which he said the previous proposal lacked. Re s i d e n t s o f n e a r by Mornelle Court, he added, have complained there is little retail space and no bank in their community. A density bonus from the developers, called Section 37 money, would be spent to build washrooms at a cricket pitch north of Ellesmere just east of Nielson Road, where the city sets up portable toilets each year. Safapour confirmed Liu and Wang also plan to put a portion of their sales profits towards bursaries that would be available to a few categories of people attending UTSC.

Local doctor pleased with court’s reversal of refugee health cuts MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com

member of Canadian Doctors For Refugee Care, adding other physicians and health care providers involved in the constitutional challenge are thrilled. Mactavish also found there is “no reliable evidence” the cuts would actually result in cost savings for the federal government, a position Caulford and others who work with claimants had argued since changes to the Interim Federal Health Program for refugees went into effect in June, 2012. Caulford, director of Scarborough’s Community Volunteer Clinic for the Me d i c a l l y Un i n s u r e d ,

A federal court ruling ordering the Conservative government to reverse cuts to health care for refugee claimants is “very much a victory for Canada,” says a Scarborough physician who testified in the case. Federal Court Justice Anne Mactavish ruled on Friday, July 4, the cuts are cruel and violate Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms, particularly because they “potentially jeopardize the health, and indeed the very lives” of innocent children. “It was so affirming, after so long,” said Dr. Paul Caulford, a

recorded the effects of the cuts on the Markham Road clinic’s patients, and supplied several of these in affidavits to the court. He argued the cuts would end up costing Canadian taxpayers more, because they would force claimants no longer eligible for care and others confused by the rules to wait until normal medical conditions worsened into more expensive, and dangerous, emergencies, before seeking care. O n Fr i d a y, h ow e v e r, Caulford added the ruling is also a victory for Canada’s social fabric and values, since most Canadians, for example,

“do not feel that, once here, a pregnant woman should not be threatened with labouring alone.” Federal Immigration Minister Chris Alexander said the government will appeal. The federal government, which has produced a list of nations unlikely to produce genuine refugees in what it said was an effort to streamline the claims system, has maintained it was acting on taxpayers’ concerns when it changed IFHP coverage. It has also said genuine refugee claimants still receive comprehensive health care coverage under the program.

“Failed claimants and those from safe countries like the U.S. or Europe should not be entitled to better health care than Canadians receive,” Alexander added in a statement Monday. “We will vigorously defend the interests of Canadian taxpayers and the integrity of our fair and generous refugee determination system.” The provincial government also welcomed the court ruling, having started an Ontario Temporary Health Program in January to provide care it said the federal government denied. In a release, Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins said the

federal government “abdicated its responsibility” with cuts to the IFHP, which he added, “put our health care professionals in an untenable position, forcing them to choose who receives treatment based on complex rules.” “The fact remains that refugees are in our country and until the federal government determines their status, many refugee claimants, including sick children and pregnant women, will require care,” Hoskin said. Caulford said he applauds the provincial program, but said it has not covered all excluded claimants.

World Cup leaves legacy in Toronto

T

he World Cup of Soccer ends this weekend with the championship and third-place matches. And while the 2014 version has already provided plenty of heart-stopping action for soccer fans, let’s hope that this event has planted the seeds for a lasting legacy in Toronto’s communities. The event may have been hosted in Brazil, but the World Cup has a significant impact in a city as diverse as Toronto (where nearly half the residents speak a language at home other than English). The World Cup is a true spectacle, and not just for fans of the two remaining teams vying for the championship on Sunday. Whether it’s been by meeting new people out to watch a game at a local establishment, or having the opportunity to learn more about another country and its culture, Torontonians are witnessing a unique opportunity for comour view munity building. Events that enable citizens from diverse backgrounds to Community gather together often help building a forge deep lasting connections. And that’s not all. Sports by-product of events like these inspire stars sporting events of the next generation. In that, the World Cup is no different than the Stanley Cup final or the World Series. And there’s definitely value to a community in a less competitive vein – the benefits of regular physical activity for our youth: soccer can be an outlet for that. And compared to other sports, soccer is relatively affordable. We’ve recently profiled a number of local soccer organizations in the city that aim to benefit from the exposure the World Cup has brought. Visit our website at www.insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO to see those stories and all other coverage we’ve compiled on the World Cup and the 32 teams participating. One final note: Those of us still craving international sporting competition after watching the World Cup don’t have long to wait and have the opportunity to experience the competition live. The FIFA Under-20 women’s soccer championships are being hosted in Canada later this summer, Aug. 5 to 24. A number of games will be in Toronto at BMO Field (Montreal, Moncton and Edmonton are also hosting games). Two of Canada’s three games in the tournament’s group stage (against Finland and Ghana) are here in Toronto.

If you can’t stand the heat...fry an egg

S

o, I’d just come back from doing a little grocery shopping at Yes Frills Saturday afternoon and was walking up the sidewalk of my street when who should I bump into but neighbourhood legend, Gordon Grouch. He was about to get into his classic ’50s Chevy parked out front of the building next to my place. “Man, what a scorcher in here,” he sighed after opening his car door. “I was driving around for more than an hour with the air conditioning going full blast and just dropped in to my friend’s condo for all of about five minutes and I swear my car’s already so hot I could fry a couple of eggs in the back seat.” I must hear that line 10 times a day each summer, and it dawned on me that in all my years I have never actually seen a fried egg cooking on the back seat of any vehicle, let alone a fancy shmancy Corvair. What’s more, I got a

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY strong feeling that if anybody could do it, Grouch was definitely the guy. So I decided to pursue the matter. “Sounds yummy, big guy,” I said. “Now, just out of curiosity, are you talking conventional eggs or organic eggs?” Gordon grimaced as he so often does. “What the heck’s the difference?” “You don’t think there’s a difference between conventional or organic?” I asked incredulously. “If so, I’d scrap my plans to try out for Canada’s Got Cooking Talent if I were you. You’ll be voted off the kitchen on the first day of auditions.” “What I meant is that the kind of eggs is irrelevant,” he said, appearing to get even hotter than it was inside his car. “All that matters is that, given the heat, they’d be frying away back there like

there’s no tomorrow.” “Really,” I replied, as I scoured the back seat that was covered with newspapers, fast food wrappers and empty pizza boxes. “Well, Gordo, I hate to take the wind out of your sails, but I don’t think even the great Sherlock Holmes could find room to roast one measly little peanut in middle of that mess, never mind a couple of eggs.” “So, I’ll fry the eggs on the front seat, then. All the better. It’s way hotter up there anyway with the sun baking through the dashboard window. They’ll be even toastier and tastier. And you know what? To show you what a bighearted guy I am, I’ll even sizzle up a couple for you, too, while I’m at it. What do you say?” I grabbed my stomach in mock horror. “Don’t bother. The back seat is scary enough. But the thought of you cooking up eggs on a seat you sit on seven days a week gives me the willies.”

“You’re missing the point, as usual, Jamie. The culinary analogy is not the issue. It’s the effect extreme temperature is having everywhere.” “Relax. I was just messing with you. How about just giving me a comparison involving heat WITHOUT food in it?” “It’d be my pleasure. It’s hotter than a sauna in my car. That better?” Yikes. The image of Grouch fully dressed in a car is bad enough. Wearing nothing but a towel and his trademark smirk gave me the double willies. So I swiped his keys, jumped into his car and bolted the doors, lest he get any ideas. Once inside I cleaned the clutter off the back seat and got down to business. “Four eggs over easy, it is,” I mouthed through the window. “Coming right up.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. Dirty deeds in 2014 mayoral campaign?

I

s it going to get dirty, this mayoral campaign? That’s what Doug Ford suggested Tuesday, as he told reporters he believed that a rival political campaign might be responsible for smashing a window in his SUV outside his Etobicoke home the previous night. That morning, a group of bare-chested protesters made a show of themselves behind Doug’s brother, Mayor Rob Ford, as he gamely bulldozed through a speech highlighting possible traffic woes. This Passion of the Fords’ narrative was upended somewhat when CityTV uploaded video showing a police officer chiding Mayor Ford’s sobriety coach, for apparently kicking one of the protesters. That protester, a 52-yearold Scarborough housing consultant with the name of John Furr, confirmed in an interview that he had indeed been kicked, and added that he was surprised when a police officer said that it was Ford’s coach

david nickle the city who’d done the alleged deed. Furr said that from the force of the kick, it felt more like “a two-year-old.” No charges were laid in the incident. But Doug Ford is correct in saying that things are getting if not dirty, then extremely ugly following Rob Ford’s return. Rob Ford’s half-hearted attempt at a mea-culpa fell flat – at least so far as the polls are concerned. The mayor still has supporters – he was given a hero’s welcome at the Caribbean Festival launch on Tuesday, and on Monday was cheered on by an entourage of T-shirt-wearing supporters – his detractors seem to have both multiplied and intensified. They have moved from fascinated disapproval to inchoate rage over the time of his absence. Tommy Lenathen, a

long-time city employee from Scarborough, is the equivalent to Doug Ford, as he came to city hall to excoriate the Ward 2 councillor for his remarks in The Etobicoke Guardian about autistic children. It may emerge that these two and also the crowd of anti-Ford protesters who’ve been sitting vigil outside the mayor’s office are political operatives for one campaign or another. It is more likely, however, that the people who are shouting over the mayor’s speeches and calling his brother a bigot are responding with genuine anger that is not so much motivated as it is provoked. Have they crossed a line, these protesters, in doing so? Of course they have. As we trudge through the waning of Rob Ford’s 2010-2014 term of office, that line is so far behind us that we wouldn’t recognize it if we saw it.

bike lane network grows wCity’s With the addition of Simcoe Street, the City of Toronto’s bike lane network grew a little larger this week. Painted bike lanes are now available on both sides of the street between Queen Street West and Front Street. They’ll also intersect with planned bike lanes on both Richmond Street and Adelaide Street, planned for later this summer. The lanes, which are not separated from the rest of the street, went into effect yesterday. Even with the planned expansion, the city is still far short of its goal to add 500 kilometres of paved bike lanes. opens bRanded online shop wTTC

the mirror looks at the upcoming junior carnival parade

our exclusive look

Junior Carnival returns to Malvern

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com

C

hildren of Scarborough will get to masquerade in one of their own neighbourhood parks this month, as Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival moves its junior event back to Malvern. The children’s costumed march, and the family fun that follows it, have been in North York for the past 11 years. That changes on Saturday, July 19, because mas band leaders and Scarborough-Rouge River MP Rathika Sitsabiaesan pressed the festival to return the junior carnival to northeastern Scarborough. “It’s really a success story of building from the ground up,” Sitsabiaesan said after a recent event previewing the carnival’s child performers. “It’s where it belongs.” Scarborough has long been the place where most mas bands have their headquarters and most carnival costumes are made by hand – seven of the nine bands this year are working in the area – but almost all festival events have been elsewhere. On the launch, band leaders and other local residents said having the junior event in Malvern,

where it was held long ago, gives Scarborough families a better chance to participate. A year ago, some area residents were saying, “I want my daughter to play, but I’m not taking her out to the west end,” Sitsabiaesan said. Carnival organizers managed to fill the stage at the recently-completed headquarters of the Malvern Family Resource Centre on Littles Road with children in a variety of sequins, feathers, beads and bright colours, each group showing off junior costumes of a different band. “This is only a taste of what’s to come,” said Dick

Lochan, a local calypso singer acting as the day’s master of ceremonies. “Let them know that the kiddies’ carnival is back in Malvern.” Lochan later said there is “a kind of renewed feeling in Malvern” at news of the event’s return. Chance to shine The MP and others said the day of activities on July 19 are a chance for Malvern to shine in front of the whole of Toronto and the wider world. “We who live here know it’s a beautiful community,” said Sitsabiesan. Festival CAO Chris

Alexander said Junior Carnival was staged near Jane Street and Finch Avenue for nine years and in Downsview Park for two, but plans for a street parade in Downsview ran into subway and then housing construction. “The route literally got squished,” he said. “In the meantime, Malvern was reaching out to us.” Members of the Festival Management Committee, Alexander added, were impressed by Malvern’s “overwhelming embrace of the festival,” and the carnival looks forward to a long relationship with the neighbourhood. “People in Scarborough

know it, they see it, they breathe it, and the mas camps are right here,” he said. At 11 a.m. on July 19, 1,500 children are expected to start their parade at Malvern Park, heading east along McLevin Avenue to Sewells Road and southwest to Neilson Road before continuing north on Neilson to Neilson Park south of Finch. A junior steel pan concert and junior calypso performers are part of the free family activities in the park that last until 8 p.m. Sada Lochan-Aristide, 11, Lochan’s granddaughter and one of Canada’s youngest calypso performers, is

looking forward to it. “I think everyone gets to see the culture that we have in Scarborough,” the sixth grader at William Dunbar Public School in Pickering said after performing one of her original songs, Ah Feeling de Vibes, on stage. Also, Scarborough’s P.C. Ho Theatre on Sheppard Avenue plays host to the Kaiso 365 - Calypso Monarch Finals on July 26. The festival holds its Grand Parade along Lakeshore Boulevard and in Exhibition Place on Saturday, Aug. 2.

She was taken to the Rouge Valley Health System’s Ajax-Pickering hospital and later airlifted to the Hospital for Sick Children where she was initially in critical condition. “She’s taken a turn for the better, fortunately, and we understand now that her condition is no longer considered lifethreatening,” Durham Regional Police spokesman David Selby said. ‘Great comedic acting’ in Moon Over Buffalo Maria tzavaras scm@insidetoronto.com

There’s those who adore the theatre, those who don’t mind it and those who detest it. In Scarborough Theatre Guild’s final show of the season, we meet one family who lives for the theatre, and despite what you may feel about it, you will laugh at these people and how the theatre has affected their lives and behaviour. A satiric comedy by Ken Ludwig, Moon Over Buffalo contains some amazing comedic acting as we

follow the lives, drama and mayhem of the Hay family, Charlotte and her husband George (Marjorie Farcas, Jon Sanderson) who live, run and act in, their own theatre company. Set in 1953 in Buffalo, New York, the set ingeniously combines a stage of the theatre and the living room of the Hay family so we can see what goes backstage and off stage in their eccentric lives. The show begins with Roz Hay (Karina Bradfield) coming home to share the news of her engagement to Howard (Ron Mendelman)

with her family. She is greeted – or rather has to yell at her grandma Ethel (Marilyn Willock) because she’s deaf, but excited to tell her the news. Roz left the theatre for a career in advertising and a quest for a “normal” life. But she has no idea what she’s in for and how the crazy life she left behind will overshadow her news. Turns out the theatre company is going broke, her mother Charlotte is ready to leave with the family lawyer, Richard (Scott Jones), her father George is in denial

about the whole thing and to top it off, he got Eileen (Stephanie Baird) Roz’s replacement, pregnant. If that isn’t enough, Roz has to face her ex Paul (Matthew Hyslop), who’s a part of her parent’s company. Theatre is fading due to television, movies and progress. George and Charlotte, while they were famous in theatre’s heyday; they’re not the stars they long to be and feel they need a lucky break to revive their careers. But showbiz is a fickle mistress, and just when they think all is lost famed director Frank

Capra is said to be coming to one of their shows. But George is drunk in despair, Eileen has left, Howard gets mistaken for different people and Ethel is oblivious. The whole scenario is just insanely funny and results in some equally insane scenes. One of the best includes Roz resuming a role on the stage, along with her drunken father, her mother playing opposite her ex-lover and performing two different plays. This is a funny show that’s welldirected, full of hilarious scenarios, and great comedic acting by a talented cast.

Sanderson is fantastic as George, as is his equally funny counterpart Farcas, who plays Charlotte. Hyslop is amazing as a stand in for Youness Tahiri. The women in this show, Baird as Eileen, Bradfield as Roz, and Willock as Ethel are a talented bunch, each having their own scenes to shine. Mendelman’s character Howard has one of the hardest tasks, trying to fit in around this crazy bunch, but he is fantastic.

An 11th person has been charged in connection with an alleged human trafficking and prostitution ring. Police had alleged teen girls were forced to work as prostitutes out of hotels and motels in the GTA and Montreal by people associated to the Galloway Boys street gang, which operates in the Galloway and Kingston roads area of Scarborough. Victims were typically recruited in their neighbourhood, police alleged. “These pimps will groom them, they will build a relationship with them, they’ll try to build a trust with them, and in most cases they try to make the victim believe that they’re in love with them,” Insp. Joanna Beaven-Desjardins alleged during a June 6 news conference at police headquarters. “These victims sometimes are very vulnerable, and they’re just looking for attention and some affection, and these pimps step in and they know exactly what these young girls are looking for and they feed off that.” Ten people were arrested and charged last month. The investigation, dubbed Project Dove, began in March. On July 2, officers from the human trafficking enforcement team arrested Darren Letts, 21, of Toronto. He faces 15 charges, including trafficking of a person under the age of 18 and living on the avails of juvenile prostitution. Police continue to look for 19-year-old Jason Bartley of Toronto in connection with the investigation. Two suspects sought in carjacking wTwo males are being sought following an armed

carjacking early Monday in the Kingston and Lawrence area. Police said a 28-year-old man was driving near Kingston Road and Lawrence Avenue when two males approached around 3:45 a.m. One male produced a firearm, demanded the victim’s property and ordered him out of the vehicle. The victim complied, and the suspects fled in the vehicle. There were no injuries. The suspects are black with thin builds. One is about six-feet tall and 155 pounds while the other is 5’9” tall and 145 pounds. facing sex assault charges wAMan man faces charges after two girls were allegedly

sexually assaulted in Scarborough. Police allege a 12-year-old girl was in her home near Midland and Lawrence avenues when a man came up to her and started a conversation with her. He then asked for a hug, but before she could reply, she was sexually assaulted. The incident happened in May or June, police said. On June 19, a 15-year-old girl was approached by a man who began talking to her in the Midland and Eglinton avenues area. He asked her for a hug, then sexually assaulted her, police alleged. Orfan Azizi, 33, is charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual interference.

Bendale teacher faces additional charges A Scarborough high school teacher has been re-arrested in connection with a child exploitation investigation. Police had alleged a teacher at Bendale Business and Technical Institute (1555 Midland Ave.) “entered into a sexual relationship” with a female student under age 18. On June 13, Matthew Elms, 39, of Toronto was arrested and was charged with sexual exploitation. He was released on bail

with conditions forbidding him from being in a position of trust or authority to anyone under 18. Police issued a news release on the arrest and subsequent to that investigated tips from the public. As a result of new information, Elms was arrested again on Monday, July 7. “He entered into a sexual relationship with another female student under the age of 18,” police alleged in a news release following the

arrest. He now faces an added charge of sexual exploitation. Elms has been a teacher with the Toronto District School Board since 2000 and has also taught at Martingrove Collegiate Institute (50 Winterton Dr.) in Etobicoke. Police are asking anyone with information to call them at 416-808-2922 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

Steeles widening plan in northeast Scarborough considered The City of Toronto took a small step this week toward resolving a long-standing dispute with York Region over a route commuters from Markham could use to enter northeast Scarborough. For many years, York tried convincing the city to accept an extension of its Markham Bypass into the Morningside Heights area, a road link would provide a

quick way for York residents to reach Hwy. 401 through Morningside Avenue. The city and environmentalists opposed the so-called Markham-Scarborough link over the Rouge River and its Morningside tributary, and by 2008 York agreed the bypass would stop at Steeles Avenue if Steeles were widened east of Markham Road. But both sides of Steeles

are within the city, which has led to disagreements between the city and region over how to pay for widening and maintaining the road, not just around the bypass but east of Kennedy Road, where plans for mall construction are complicated by the need for a GO rail separation on Steeles. Toronto city council this week approved negotia-

tions with York to widen and share ongoing costs on 1.5 kilometres of Steeles – from Ninth Line to 400 metres east of Tapscott Road –which would finally make it easier for York traffic to reach Morningside. If an agreement for this widening is reached, council decided, the principles used in it could be part of a comprehensive agreement for

improvements and management of the entire 40-kilometre section of Steeles between York and Toronto. It’s estimated 650,000 vehicles cross Steeles between the region and the city every day.

station early Tuesday. Police said three masked men approached the counter of the Pioneer station at 3279 Kingston Rd. at 12:50 a.m. One suspect produced a knife and demanded cash. The 52-year-old male employee complied. The suspects also stole the victim’s cellphone before fleeing the scene. The victim suffered minor injuries.

Twelve young athletes from across Toronto will be flying to Great Britain to take their place in the 2014 CIMA Toronto Mayor’s Cricket Team. The team will be participating in the Cricket Across the Pond scholarship program, travelling to England, where they’ll learn leadership, be ambassadors for Toronto – and play the London Mayor’s Team in London on July 18. The program was started seven years ago by Toronto Mayor David Miller and continued by his successor, Mayor Rob Ford. The 12 young people gathered together at Toronto City Hall recently with Mayor Ford, city councillor Anthony Perruzza, corporate sponsers of the event Royal Bank of Canada, the Canadian Institute of Management Accountants, and Tom’s Place menswear, who outfitted the young men with tailored suits and ties for their trip. Here’s a list of the team members: Christopher Persaud of Sinclair Secondary School, Armaan Kapoor of Brampton Centennial Secondary School, Shivang Kantawala of North Albion Collegiate Institute, Malhar Patel of North Albion Collegiate Institute, Druv Patel of North Albion Collegiate Institute, Rohit Malhotra of Stephen Lewis
