Toronto is gearing up for the arrival of the giant pandas. The creatures are expected to soon capture the hearts of Toronto Zoo staff and visitors. The male and female pair will land in Toronto Monday, March 25, before making their way to the zoo, where they will be quarantined for at least 30 days. During the quarantine period, they will undergo medical testing and behaviour monitoring, while being introduced to training and enrichment programs. After the quarantine period, the pandas will slowly be introduced to their new habitat, before their exhibit opens in mid-May. The pandas, five-year-old female Er Shun and four-yearold male Da Mao, will stay in Toronto for five years, before heading to the Calgary Zoo for another five years. >>>PANDAS, page 20
Residents hoping a new publicprivate partnership can start to remake the shuttered Guild Inn this year must pin their hopes
on one company. Dynamic Hospitality and Entertainment Group of Toronto was the only prospect asked last month to submit a plan to design, build and operate a restaurant or banquet centre “and
other complimentary facilities” where the former Guildwood Parkway hotel now stands. Five companies requested pre-qualification forms from the City of Toronto’s Real Estate Division before last Dec. 10, but
by February Dynamic, based at Ontario Place, was the project’s only contender. The city closed the Guild Inn, based on an Arts and Crafts style mansion built in 1914 for Col. Harold Bickford, in 2001,
and then tried and failed twice to find a private partner willing to restore the facility as a restaurant, banquet hall and boutique hotel. A prospective partnership >>>DYNAMIC, page 20

Police allege witness intimidation in murder ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
“I’d like to return some of this power back to the Glamorgan community and let them feel safer,” Vander Heyden said. Police believe the daylight murder was witnessed by as many as 40 people, including children in a playground 20 feet away. Vincent’s parents, Diane and Norris, made an appeal to those witnesses.
Two men charged this week in a deadly shooting outside a Scarborough building last summer allegedly intimidated neighbourhood residents in the days, weeks and months following the murder, police say. The gunfire June 22 at 6 Glamorgan Ave., near Kennedy and Ellesmere roads, took the life of 30-year-old Ricardo “Bashie” Vincent, a wellliked father of one.
Moral responsibility
‘Urban terrorism’ “It’s come to my attention that the people responsible for this murder and perhaps associates of theirs attended this community on a regular basis and attempted to intimidate people from co-operating with the police,” Det. Sgt. Justin Vander Heyden alleged during a news conference at police head-

quarters Tuesday. “It’s urban terrorism at its worst. It literally paralyzed the Glamorgan
community in fear.” Police now want to speak to those who were allegedly intimidated.
“I think it’s your moral responsibility to come forward,” Norris said. “I would not like to see another parent go through what we have experienced.” Norris noted he looks forward to justice prevailing. “The system works when we co-operate with the police,” he added. The two men were arrested early Tuesday. “As a result of these arrests, a part of me feels a sense of peace,” Diane
said. Norris said his son grew up in the Glamorgan area and “gravitated back” to the neighbourhood because many of his friends were still there. “He was a great guy. He was a people person. He was very respectful and respected.” As part of the investigation, Vander Heyden said police seized vehicles, executed search warrants, reviewed surveillance video and “interviewed a great number of people.” Vincent, the city’s 24th murder victim of 2012, knew the two accused, Vander Heyden said. “It appears there was some sort of an ongoing dispute.” Orville Campbell, 21, and Stanton David, 20, have been charged with first-degree murder.

n event taking place next week hopes to ‘raise’ not money but volunteer hours for local nonprofit organizations. Heading into its 10th anniversary event on March 22, Timeraiser began as a unique idea started by university graduates who wanted to help out in some way but had little disposable income to do so. The concept is simple: instead of bidding money to organizations, guests could bid time and would be rewarded after meeting their volunteer obligations with art from local artists. Non-profit organizations participating in the event from across the city include Delisle Youth Services, McDonald House, and the our view Ronald Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research. The goal is to bring in There’s a 10,000 volunteer hours for the participating non-profits and return on this 30 invest $23,000 in the careers of artists. investment But this is just one event. Volunteer opportunities exist year-round in your neighbourhood. Connect with local organizations that require more than just funds to operate successfully. Groups like the Agincourt Community Services food bank have programs that run year-round and they all value the currency of time. Or take the initiative like the Timeraiser organizers did and find an issue to invest your time in – whether it’s starting up a community beautification project or organizing neighbourhood walks. Attend community council or a school council meeting and champion a cause that needs a leader to rally fellow residents and families to accomplish a goal together. The return on investment is a tighter-knit community that also yields such benefits as improved neighbourhood safety and increased community engagement from youths to seniors. Non-profit organizations seeking volunteers can also get the word out by visiting www.scarboroughmirror.com and submitting a listing online for the community calendar, which will automatically be considered for the print edition. Put end to sidewalk snowplowing To the editor: Mayor Rob Ford and city councillors, listen up. An easy way to save money is to stop the needless sidewalk snowplows. Each year their passes create havoc with gouged and uprooted sections of grass, lifted curbs, interlocking bricks and chunks of driveways and ruined hedges and shrubs at the edge of the sidewalks. Most people shovel the
sidewalks before the plow comes by and then they have to do it again because the huge tires on the plow hits the snow banks and deposit it on the sidewalk. If left as is, it becomes a frozen dangerous mass for people to trip or slip on. These plows leave a huge mess and create more work for the homeowner. I know everyone can’t shovel their sidewalks, but when we have large snow
falls like we have had recently, neighbours help each other out with their snow blowers or shovels. That’s what neighbourhoods do. I have a cedar hedge that is more than 40 years old. Each year the plows takes a toll on it, ripping off branches and leaving gaping holes. It takes years and years for these holes to fill in, if they ever do. These past two snowfalls have been hard on the trees
just with the weight of the snow. Now I have two gaping holes in my hedge thanks to the sidewalk snowplow ripping several branches off the lower sections of trees and large gouges taken out of the grass across the front of my house. City of Toronto, save money, stop the sidewalk plows. A. Welch
Suburban residents becoming second-class citizens To the editor: Re: ‘Planning better roundtables,’ Editorial, March 7. I thought your comments in your editorial were absolutely spot on. Unfortunately, it is only the people who live in the ‘burbs’ who truly understand your point of view. We who choose not to live in the inner city have sunk to a perceived second-class
status ever since that ridiculous concept of amalgamation was forced on Metropolitan Toronto’s residents by the former premier Mike Harris Tories. They allowed this hijacking of responsible civic government to take place when they backed the move to centralize power at Toronto’s city hall. It certainly didn’t mean the old city of Toronto’s system of
civic governing was deserving of such largess. It was and still is the realm of special interest groups and entrenched ruling cliques. I found the leadership of the other ‘cities’, like Scarborough, actually listened to their residents, were successful and able to balance their budgets because the various components worked together.
So now the rest of us have to go cap-in-hand to the Emerald City, but only during business hours, if we wish to become part of the ‘democratic’ process. Our voices may be heard, but I doubt that they are listened to by those who allegedly make their decisions based on the ‘greater good’. Chris Belfontaine

Don’t bet on an early casino vote
A
s we all struggle to pull our minds from the gutter of (alleged) sleaze, bad behaviour and public lewdness that emerged last week at and around city hall, it’s worth remembering that Toronto Council has a major policy debate on its plate this spring: whether or not to host a casino. Right now, the debate is alleged too. It was to have occurred in the coming weeks, once staff delivered a final report to the executive committee and then to council. It will be a bit later than that, we learned Friday; the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation has been slow in providing the necessary information to make a rational decision on the matter. The best current information we have on the benefits of a casino comes in the form of a pitch from MGM Resorts International and Cadillac Fairview to turn much of Exhibition Place into a giant resort
david nickle the city and gambling complex. The casino would bring 10,000 jobs, they say — good paying jobs with an average income of $60,000. It would revitalize the city’s waterfront around Exhibition Place and Ontario Place with new foot bridges, and spur massive transit improvements to and from the site. And on the subject of admission to what is left of the Canadian National Exhibition ... the casino would have it covered, for the next 10 years and maybe even longer. Of course, none of that’s set in stone — or even in a remotely binding document. Like all the best pitches, this gives plenty of impetus for an irrational decision. Right now, the rationalism is all on the “no” side. The city’s medical officer of health has weighed in
with a report indicating that the adverse effects of a casino on gambling addicts would outweigh any benefits in terms of employment and economic stimulus. Developers in the downtown have joined small businesses there in arguing that a casino is the last thing that the city needs from an economic stimulus point of view. And that report from staff still hasn’t been able to pin down what kind of annual hosting fee Toronto might expect — which is the final demonstrable public benefit that might tip the balance, if it’s large enough. Whenever that report comes out, council must decide whether a certain amount of suffering among a demographic of addicts and their family is worth an annual boost to the city’s coffers? It’s a moral question. Answer it badly... and that gutter beckons. David Nickle is The Mirror’s city hall reporter. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at dnickle@insidetoronto.com

St. Patrick’s Day parade set for Sunday afternoon Toronto is set to go green when the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade winds its way through the city’s streets this weekend. The parade will kick off at Bloor and St. George streets at noon on Sunday, March 17. It will travel east along Bloor, south down Yonge and west along Queen, ending up at Nathan Phillips Square. The fun-filled Irish-themed parade will take place rain or shine and is expected to run for roughly 90 minutes.

Scarborough forum on casino plans Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson has called a community forum for Saturday, March 23, to hear what people from his ward think of proposals for a downtown
Toronto casino. Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. said it will allow a private company to build a casino and entertainment complex downtown and to rebuild a casino around the Woodbine Racetrack. Toronto council is expected to vote on the issue next month. Thompson, chair of the city’s economic development committee, said he’s heard from constituents supporting and opposing a casino proposal for Toronto’s downtown. The March 23 forum, which he said will include speakers from both sides, is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Toronto Public Library branch at Parkway Mall, which is at Ellesmere Road and Victoria Park Avenue.

Residents ready for re-opening of Ted’s restaurant Diner fans in southeast Scarborough are invited to celebrate the re-opening of an institution in the Highland Creek village community this Saturday. The Amazing Ted’s Diner, which has been operating in the village on Old Kingston Road for 60 years, will re-open after a six-week renovation. Owner Randy Zhang is
looking forward to opening the doors, and letting customers see the interior of the classic-style diner. Though reno work was done to put in new floors, seats and washrooms, care was taken to preserve the timeless diner’s look and feel. Zhang will be offering special promotions to visitors between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.
on Saturday. Ted’s first opened its doors to the community in 1954 under the name of Ted’s Variety and Coffee Shop, and was operated by owner Ted Petkoff. Zhang has been the owner since 2003. The restaurant’s diner style has been popular with numerous film and television pro-
duction companies that have used it as a set, including the 1999 movie Pushing Tin with John Cusack, Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton.

EASTER EGG DECORATING CONTEST Residents can decorate an egg and help fill empty tummies this Easter. To celebrate Easter – and
egg decorating – the Egg Farmers of Ontario (EFO) have launched The Eggs Factor contest. It’s an online egg-decorating contest which provides residents the opportunity to design their own egg-Picasso or Rembrandt. Running until April 2, The Eggs Factor contest is divided into six age categories: zero to
five, six to 12, 13 to 18, 19 to 29 and 30 to 59 and 60-plus. A panel of eggs-perts – Ontario egg farmers – will shortlist each category to six entries. The chosen entries will then be posted on eggsfactor.ca, where Canadians will have the chance to cast their votes from April 4 to 14. Visit www.eggsfactor.ca for details and to enter.

Fair Trade Town status could be in Toronto’s future ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Some minor tweaking to Toronto’s policy around purchasing Fair Trade coffee, tea and sugar could mean “Fair Trade Town” status for the city. It wouldn’t be difficult for Toronto to obtain the designation, said Ward 19 Councillor Mike Layton. “The initiative wouldn’t cost the city much money and basically
is a form of recognition, for the most part, for purchasing practices the city already employs,” Layton explained. “The designation would also empower Fair Trade Toronto to go out and solicit businesses to make similar changes.” Fair trade certification means producers and companies purchasing products have met a variety of criteria including labour standards, minimum prices and fair pay, sustainable farming, governance,
on-site audits and the democratic participation of workers. To become a Fair Trade Town, Toronto must achieve a series of goals that include focussing on getting broad local support, increasing public education, mapping and increasing the availability of Fair Trade products. City staff have done the research and are recommending some small, but important changes the City of Toronto can make it to its purchas-
ing policies to achieve Fair Trade Town designation. “We are a cosmopolitan city that cares about other people in the world, the environment and the workers and we have purchasing policies that reflect that,” Layton said. “It isn’t difficult to find stuff like fair trade sugar and it isn’t that much more expensive, so staff has said ... we will be able to do it.” The recommendations on the requirements to achieve fair trade
town status was adopted at the Feb. 25 government management committee and will be considered by Council April 3. There are 500 Fair Trade Towns in the United Kingdom and municipalities across North America including Vancouver, Chicago, San Francisco, Berkley, Boston and Barrie.

Dynamic to submit plan Pandas to arrive late March, >>>from page 1 with Windmill Consortium ended in 2007, and in 2011 Centennial College, which said it spent $1 million on studies and other expenses over three years of preparations, announced it was ending its interest in the project. Windmill and Centennial signed agreements but were not able to find a willing operator for a Guild Inn hotel, suggesting a sale of condominiums beside the Bickford Residence in Guildwood Park was needed to support the building’s restoration. In both cases, the city was unwilling to change the deal. For its third attempt, the city dropped a hotel from its aims, but the old Inn, now damaged extensively by water, theft and toxic mould, could be beyond repair. At a mandatory meeting on the site last week Dynamic representatives were asked to bring their own safety boots, safety glasses and breathing masks with ventilators.
The Bickford and its pre1950 additions are designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. It was the centrepiece of the Guild of all Arts, for which the surrounding 88-acre park - home to more than 70 architectural fragments of Toronto buildings - and the southeast Scarborough community of Guildwood are named. A federal heritage designation is being considered for the entire park property, which sold to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority in 1978. The city assumed responsibility for managing the land and its buildings in 1993. Dynamic, which operates restaurants, nightclubs and comedy clubs in Vaughan, Oakville and Toronto as well as the Eglinton Grand event theatre was asked to submit its proposal by noon on May 3. The city then plans to hear an evaluation of the company’s bid at a June 17 meeting of its government management committee. Its schedule
then calls for an agreement to be negotiated and signed by Aug. 27. Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie is chairperson of the committee but his office said he was unaware how many pre-qualified bidders there were. A deal with Dynamic could bring other investments to the park above the Lake Ontario shoreline. The city had agreed to spend $4.2 million over three years in projects in the “cultural precinct” around the Bickford, including a cafe, a visitor’s centre and living horticultural sculptures, but proposals for that work have been delayed more than two years while the Bickford stayed derelict and the Guild’s future uncertain. Ainslie has also recommended to the Toronto Library Board that the Toronto Public Library’s Guildwood branch be moved to the Guild site.

will be held in quarantine >>>from page 1 Staff at the Toronto Zoo are hopeful the pair will breed there. If cubs are born in Toronto, the pandas and cubs would stay until their removal is approved. Specialists at the zoo will encourage breeding between the two, which were chosen as a good genetic breeding match. It’s been 28 years since giant pandas were displayed at the Toronto Zoo. In 1985, when the zoo housed giant pandas for three months, it marked its highest annual attendance ever with 1.9 million visitors. While at the zoo, the pandas’ diet will consist mostly of bamboo, brought in fresh three times a week from Memphis. They will also eat leaf-eater biscuits, dog chow, apples and vitamins. M. Butterfly’s incredible story on stage Scarborough Theatre Guild presents David Henry play full of twists and turns MARIA TZAVARAS scm@insidetoronto.com
dragon that was hand-built and two-storey set that portrays Song’s apartment, prison and several other places. In the beginning scenes, we see that Gallimard was an awkward and inexperienced man who didn’t garner any attention from women until he becomes a French diplomat in China.
Once in awhile, when a play is so unbelievable and also based on a true story, you are left shaking your head in disbelief long after you’ve left the theatre. Scarborough Theatre Guild’s latest production, M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang, is one of those shows. While you are left to wonder how such a thing is even possible, you realize, too, that people shield themselves from the obvious because denial keeps them happy. It tells the story of Rene Gallimard (Ross Saturno), who narrates his story from his prison cell in Paris, France in 1988, while his surroundings become the different settings where it all happened. The set is stunning. Of note is the massive red
Skewed ideas Being a late bloomer, some of his ideas about women and relationships are skewed, and some may say it’s the reason why he ends up in prison in the first place. The show spans 28 years, beginning in 1960, when he attends the opera Madame Butterfly in Beijing. After the show, he meets the show’s star, Song Liling (Rory Moy) and walks her home. Intrigued with this shy
and graceful woman, who he affectionately calls Butterfly, the two quickly become friends, which eventually turns into an affair. Despite being married to Helga (Julie Adams), Gallimard rationalizes his behaviour; because she makes him happy is all the reason he needs. Without giving it away, let’s just say Song isn’t exactly what she seems. As an audience member, it’s hard to believe Gallimard doesn’t see it either despite the fact they were together 20 years! It’s also hard to believe he never realizes that Song is relaying information to Comrade Chin (Candi Zell), and the Chinese government, which ultimately gets him arrested. In Gallimard’s final court appearance before being sentenced, if you haven’t figured it out, all is revealed

in an explosive scene between Gallimard and Song that is as intense as it is unbelievable. You may be shocked, you may think he got what he deserved, but whatever conclusions you make, you will be thinking about it long after you leave the theatre. Both Saturno and Moy are amazing to watch as the doomed couple, Gallimard and Song. Outstanding Moy gives an outstanding performance portraying Song that’s both moving and believable. Gallimard is a challenging role to portray, being both the narrator and subject of the plot. Playing a character that’s immoral to some, Saturno does so with the right balance of sympathy as well as
naivety. Zell as Comrade Chin provides some much needed comic relief to this often heavy show, as does Mike Malott, who plays Gallimard’s oldest friend, Marc. Intriguing An incredible story with more twists and turns than a mystery novel, this show is intriguing and thoughtprovoking. Please not this is an adult show with coarse language and adult themes. M. Butterfly runs until March 23, 8 p.m., at the Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd. General admission are $18. To order tickets, please call 416-267-9292.

Art Guild of Scarborough set for spring show MARIA TZAVARAS mtzavaras@insidetoronto.com Local art groups rely on two things to keep their group thriving and relevant: a talented
group of member artists and a community that supports their work. Currently in its 52nd year, The Art Guild of Scarborough (AGS) has both of these ele-
ments. Each season the guild hosts an art show to exhibit the works of members and show appreciation for the support received from the community.
About 80 members of the AGS will be showing approximately 400 works at the upcoming Spring Art Show and Sale later this month. President of the group Garry

Herridge said there will be a variety of art processes and content on display, and there is such an eclectic mix of styles that there’ll be something to suit everyone’s tastes.
“I also thought it would be a good way to be able to show my work publicly in a community atmosphere.”
Art rocks
Modopoulos has an eclectic body of work that ranges from the surreal in style, drawing inspiration from master painters like Salvatore Dali. She creates colourful paintings of people, wildlife, semi-realistic landscapes and abstract pieces. “I can’t say that I have one particular style,” she said. I try to change it up because I don’t like to stagnate and I like to try new things,” she said. Modopoulos said she’s looking forward to exhibiting at this show, where she will be showcasing four different pieces that will range in style and content.
“There will drawings, mixed media, acrylic, oil and watercolour paintings, and our content ranges from landscapes, floral, still life to abstract subject matter,” he said. Herridge said this year, the AGS is introducing a new component to its shows, an annual project that will change each year that has the group creating a new style of art. For the spring show, the new component is called The Art Guild Rocks, where members have collected rocks from places across Ontario and created their own unique pieces of art with them. “ T h e s e r o c k s a re depicting a number of subjects from landscapes to animals, they will be on display along with our artwork,” he said. The guild is always looking for new ways of doing art, Herridge said, and these initiatives keep things new for both the members and the public. What also keeps the artwork fresh is the balance between long-standing members and new ones, who always bring fresh perspectives and works to the group. Chair

Scarborough resident Maria Modopoulos has been a member for the past year-and-a-half, and also acts as exhibition chair for the group. A painter for close to 40 years, after attending a couple of the AGS shows she decided she wanted to become a member herself. “Because it’s a community group I thought it would be something I would like to get involved in,” she said.
Eclectic
Juried show She also said the public can look forward to seeing a variety of high-caliber works that are also affordable. As always, the works in this AGS show have been juried, this time by Diane Lingenfelter. Awards will be given for the best painting in each category. The annual Spring Art Show and Sale will be held on the weekend of March 23 and 24. Show times are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.each day. The show will be held at the Centennial Community and Recreation Centre 1967 Ellesmere Rd. Admission and parking are free. The awards presentation and opening reception for the spring show will take place on March 23, at 10 a.m.
