Stories about refugees touched the world this year, and one Agincourt school is doing what it can to bring a Syrian family to Canada. M a r y Wa r d C a t h o l i c Secondary is also inviting the public to Songs for Syria, an evening of entertainment to raise funds starting at 7 p.m. this Friday. Mary Ward is “a very familylike school” and its 1,100 students and 100 staff are getting behind the effort, Samantha Kuo, 17, student council president, said last week. Redah Tam, council vicepresident, said she wants more people to learn about the situation Syrian refugees are in. “It really makes your heart hurt,” said Redah, who is also 17. “Canada’s such a big country. Even the littlest thing can help them.” The Kennedy Road school’s goal is to raise $27,000, the federal government’s minimum level of support for a sponsored refugee family through a charity called Life Line Syria. MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Liberal star candidate Bill Blair offered “heartfelt thanks” for his victory in Scarborough Southwest Monday, but there was defiance from Dan Harris, the New Democrat MP he defeated. Blair supporters lining the
entrance to Qssis Banquet Hall threw rose petals as Blair, Toronto’s former police chief, made his way through the crowd on election night, Oct. 19. Scarborough Southwest was his first entry into politics, and was forecast as a tight race when the long campaign began, but Blair said he could see during the last week or so “something
very special” was happening there and across the country. On Monday, he took a commanding 52.5 per cent of votes, outdistancing the incumbent Harris, who had 23.7 per cent, and Conservative Roshan Nallaratnam with 21.3. Fr o m t h e s t a g e, Bl a i r reminded the crowd they would all be Canadians when they

Anandasangaree takes riding for Liberals SCARBOROUGH ROUGE PARK
TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Liberal Gary Anandasangaree swept Scarborough-Rouge Park with 60 per cent voter support, becoming the new riding’s first MP. The lawyer and human rights activist beat three other first-time candidates to win the riding, created in 2012 from parts of Pickering-East (49 per cent), ScarboroughRouge River (36 per cent) and Scarborough-Guildwood (14 per cent). “I’m just absolutely overwhelmed today,” he said while addressing supporters during his victory party at the Scarborough Convention Centre. “I want to dedicate this victory to our young people, and to the youth of Scarborough-Rouge Park, and to this country.” Many expected a close race. Had the riding existed in the 2011 election, the Liberals would have narrowly won
with three per cent more votes than the Conservatives, besting the New Democrats by only one per cent. When polls closed Monday, a total of 49,754 votes were cast in the riding, including 11,560 advance votes, a 69 per cent voter turnout. Anandasangaree collected 29,906 votes (60 per cent). Conservative Leslyn Lewis finished second with 27 per cent support, 13,604 votes. She threw her hat in the ring after her party’s first candidate, Jerry Bance, was ousted by the “pee gate” scandal. After his nomination, CBC hidden-camera footage surfaced of Bance peeing in a coffee cup in the home of someone he was providing contracting services for. Lewis, a lawyer, teacher and active community member, promised to focus

on creating jobs, increasing youth employment, assisting seniors and providing economic stability and environmental sustainability. New Democrat KM Shanthikumar came in third with 10 per cent sup-
port, 5,164 votes. During his campaign, the pastor, professional cricket player and telecommunications manager said Toronto’s needs surpass those of Canada’s other cities and he would fight for federal funding that reflects that.
Green Party candidate Calvin Winter finished last with two per cent support, 1,080 votes. He campaigned on promises to create jobs in Toronto, while building a vibrant, safe and livable city. Anandasangaree took an early lead in the polls that only continued to grow. The Liberal party did the same, forming a majority government as ridings throughout Toronto and across Canada were painted Liberal red. “We will work with all levels of government with Justin Trudeau as prime minister,” said Anandasangaree. “We will restore evidencebased decision making, and we will provide more money for middle class, and we will build infrastructure and we will rebuild our democracy.” Anandasangaree said he hopes Canada is embarking on a new political future, free of “dirty, messy and negative”

tactics. “We’ve seen the worst type of this negativity in this riding and this country,” he said. “Today, the people of Scarborough-Rouge Park and the people of Canada voted for real change, real positive change. Canadians from coast to coast to coast rejected the negativity and divisiveness with politics, and voted for a new generation of leaders who will make Canada proud again.” He used his campaign to call for federal investments to transform Toronto’s transportation systems. He said he would support ambitious building in the city to grow its economy and create more livable communities. He also pledged support for the Liberal plan to invest $100 million to improve Canada’s refugee services, while sending another $100 million to the United Nations to help Syrian refugees.
Liberal Chen honoured to be new riding’s first MP SCARBOROUGH NORTH
TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Liberal Shaun Chen is Scarborough North’s first MP, after handily beating sitting New Democrat MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan for the job. Chen received 18,903 votes, 48 per cent support, in the new riding. “It was truly amazing to see the incredible support,” said Chen. “I’m truly humbled and honoured at the trust that the people of Scarborough North have put in me to be their next member of parliament, and I will continue to fight to make sure that their voice is heard, that their issues are addressed and that their needs are championed at the
federal level.” Scarborough North was expected to be a close race between the Liberals and New Democrats, before Chen pulled away with the win after polls closed Monday. The new riding was created from parts of ScarboroughRouge River and ScarboroughAgincourt in 2012. The former riding of Scarborough-Rouge River, which makes up 92 per cent of Scarborough North, was dissolved. Sitsabaiesan, the incumbent MP for ScarboroughRouge River, chose to run in Scarborough North after the
boundary redistribution. In a surprising loss, she finished third with 22 per cent support, 8,647 votes. She was the youngest Ontario MP elected in 2011, at 29 years old, and the first Tamil MP. She broke a Liberal stronghold when she was elected in ScarboroughRouge River, which had been red since its creation in 1988. Liberal MP Derek Lee, who represented the riding during that time, did not seek reelection. Sitsabaiesan took 40 per cent of the vote in 2011, while the Conservatives and Liberals garnered 30 and 27 per cent respectively. Before this election, she promised to fight for improved jobs, roads and
public transit, and more assistance for disadvantaged seniors and children, saying Scarborough North deserved more than it received the last 10 years from Stephen Harper’s Conservatives. Finishing second with 27 per cent support, Conservative Ravinder Malhi collected 10,738 votes. The active volunteer and member of several community groups made her political debut this election. During her campaign, she said she would focus on lowering taxes and supporting initiatives and legislation that keep communities safe, while working to increase jobs, transportation and affordable child care.
The Green party’s Eleni MacDonald came in fourth with 579 votes, while independents Raphael Rosch and Aasia Khatoon earned 164 and 156 votes respectively. A total of 39,187 votes were cast in the riding, including 12,606 advance votes, for a 60 per cent voter turnout. To run for federal office, Chen stepped down as chair of the Toronto District School Board after eight months on the job. He took a leave of absence from his position as school trustee for Scarborough-Rouge River, which he represented since 2006. “I’m looking forward to now representing Scarborough North in Ottawa, and noth-
ing will change,” he said. “I will continue to listen, to advocate and to bring their voices forward. We need to create a better Canada, and it’s by working together that we can do just that.” He plans to build on his experience with the TDSB to represent young Canadians at the federal level and work to increase youth employment. “So many young graduates work hard and graduate and find out there’s no work, and that’s got to change,” he said. “We need to have our next generation be able to find opportunities, and be successful, because our country depends on it. They are the future of the country.”

Keep your Liberal MP accountable I
t appears voters believe Justin Trudeau is, in fact, ready to become the Prime Minister of Canada as the red tide of Liberal support swept the country and all of Toronto Monday night. With a majority government, the federal Liberals now have a strong mandate to implement their policies and the priorities they outlined during the 78-day national election campaign. It’s time now for Toronto residents, who voted in the Liberals in all 25 local ridings, to make sure the election promises and commitments to invest in our city are kept by the Prime Minister Designate and the newly elected MPs. Start by getting to know your local Liberal MP, many of whom are first-time poliour view ticians. As it is a majority government, they will be your voice in for the next four years. City’s priority Ottawa And while majority governissues must ments are more stable, it becomes even more important to hold the be addressed party in power accountable to run an agenda that is in the best interest of those who elected them into power. The next four years with a co-operative federal government that is friendly to major cities can go a long way in building community at a very local level. Just as Mayor John Tory outlined in his congratulatory speech, Trudeau’s commitment to cities includes investments in building transit, affordable housing, repairing social housing and other major infrastructure needs. These are all top priority issues for Toronto, which can’t be addressed by just one level of government. In a city as large and complex as ours, the federal government must be a major player in helping provide a solution to these ongoing issues. Since we also have a majority Liberal government in Ontario, we are hoping they can work very well together to the benefit of Toronto and other big cities in the province. Even if you didn’t cast a ballot for the Liberals, the incoming MPs are elected to represent all constituents in their riding. Keep them accountable to the “positive politics” that Trudeau seemed to champion throughout the campaign. Tory said he is looking forward to working with Trudeau on Toronto’s issues. So should we.

Cold fall weather passing with flying colours It was chillier than usual for mid-October last weekend. Not surprisingly the unseasonable weather kept a lot of the locals inside. Too bad. They missed a golden opportunity to check out some great fall scenery. Take my favourite nature trail, Cedarvale Ravine. The dip in temperature provided a multitude of stunning sights that one normally doesn’t experience this time of year. I didn’t have to go far for my first breathtaking view either. After just one step on the venerable path, I immediately came across a majestic yellow-bellied turtleneck. I couldn’t believe my good fortune. It was on a park bench behind the Heath Street entrance of St. Clair West station. I didn’t want to scare it away, so I tip-toed over in hopes of getting a closer shot with my camera. It appeared to be whistling what sounded like the OK, Blue Jays theme song. I listened for a few verses,
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY but then was distracted by a an eye-catching dark black double-breasted trench coat. And get this: it was standing upright against a tree warbling with a peach pullover. I kid you not. Wow. I’d been out for all of a minute-and-a-half and I’d seen all this already? I felt like I was in selfie heaven. As much as I enjoyed the show, I was eager to see what else was out there, so I headed down the hill. Within seconds, a flurry of baby blue toques went whizzing by. On their heels was a flock of white longsleeve shirts. Both groups came and went in the blink of an eye. I made a mental note not to blink anymore. I wanted to make absolutely sure I didn’t miss a thing. I moseyed along and as I looked at the steps leading to a bridge high above, I
caught a glimpse of four sets of maroon mountain boots scurrying up in perfect sync. There was a quartet of matching red and white scarves around their necks flapping away in the breeze. I rounded the bend and staring at me was a pair of deep brown wooly socks. They were peeking out from beneath some pale gray sweatpants. I was snapping away furiously. I knew I would need to have proof. No way anybody would believe me if I said I had seen all this stuff in one morning. As I headed past the fenced off area for dogs, the pooches were barking away at each other and at the pink mittens and gold gloves watching them. Over the hill next to the tennis court I saw a beige cardigan perched next to a lavender hoodie. On the soccer field across from them a green vest was enjoying the company of an orange balaclava. As I continued on I came
across a cornucopia of turquoise trousers, lavender sweaters and purple parkas. It was surreal I tell you. I was there until early afternoon and then headed home. On the TV weather report the meteorologist said temperatures would be back to normal for the weeks ahead. So I raced back to the ravine. As fate would have it, that yellow-bellied turtleneck was still at the same park bench. I joined him for a more few choruses of OK, Blue Jays and then called it a day. And what a day it turned out to be. No question the season always gets good marks, come rain or come shine. But last weekend clearly proved fall will pass with flying colours when you add a little cold into the mix, too. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Put savings in the spotlight
Local Legion branches are centres of community To the editor: In the next week or so we will start to see those folks with their little white boxes at your local supermarket, The Beer Store and L.C.B.O. outlet as well as GO stations and subway stops. T h e y a re t h e Roy a l Canadian Legion volunteers participating in the annual Poppy distribution campaign in honour of our military veterans. Each year, Legion branches across the country, through the generous donation of Canadians, raise hundreds of thousands of dollars during this annual campaign. Since there are no administration costs, every penny donated goes to support our veterans and their families. The Legion’s sole purpose is to honour and support our military veterans. Unfortunately, the Legion is becoming a victim of time.
The ranks are getting smaller and the job is becoming more difficult. Coupled with that is the perception that one must be in or have been in military service to be a member, and that is not the case. The Legion is open to anyone who is a Canadian citizen and of voting age.

Memories of the Pan Am Games Funny thing happened to me in the summer. I missed the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. How could that happen? Here’s how: First, I read the scads of negative press. How it costs so much to run the Games, how the facilities left over are poor compensation for the cost and how the Pan Ams are a poor substitute for Toronto being a bridesmaid on the awarding of the Olympics. Facility wise, there’s no doubt Scarborough scored huge with the Pan Am aquatic centre. It was the largest structure built for the Games and the largest investment in the history of Canadian amateur sport. I just haven’t seen it yet! Next, I spent time trying to figure out why “Pan American” Games? Where is Pan America? It’s not Panama. I looked it up. Thank you Grade 5 geography, Mr. Greenwood! We got North and South America. We even have Central America. But no Pan. People understand the Olympics and even have some
john lyon LYON AROUND vague notion of who attends the Commonwealth Games, but the Pan Am Games leave most folks scratching their heads. Now don’t get me wrong, I can get behind the Olympic Games, especially those on Canadian soil. I still remember little Nadia Comaneci in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Eddie the Eagle in Calgary in 1988 and many heroes of our greatest Games in Vancouver 2010 – especially Sidney Crosby’s golden goal. I even named my golden retriever after him. The Commonwealth Games, I am less sure. I couldn’t name one athlete who has competed in them, so I couldn’t name my dog after an athlete that competed in them. But the Pan Am Games? I just don’t know. Ping pong and beach volleyball. Really? And the traffic! Or at least the spectre of traffic was enough

for me to not get behind the Games. I was quaking at the prospect of jammed roads over the summer. In Toronto we have two seasons – winter and construction. How dare they mess up my 25-minute commute to work? Yet, I didn’t notice one uptick in the traffic in the Scarborough area during the Games, although the thought of it made me think twice about attending any events. I was intrigued by the HOV lanes though, and how the phrase HOV was thrown about with reckless abandon without many people knowing what it meant. High Occupancy Vehicle – there! Be honest, how many of you got that? And now it’s been decided there will be no Toronto Olympic bid for the 2024 Olympics. At least we have the memories of the Pan Am Games... or for those of us who missed them... not. John Lyon is a longtime Scarborough resident. His column appears every second Thursday in The Mirror. FIVE STARS
Scarborough Walk of Fame welcomes its newest inductees Sam Juric scm@insidetoronto.com Scarborough Town Centre buzzed with anticipation as community members watched five local heroes honoured at the 2015 induction ceremony of the Scarborough Walk of Fame (SWOF) on Saturday. The ceremony served as an exciting preamble to the launch of the inaugural Kaleidoscope Ball gala, which was presented by The Scarborough Hospital Foundation and the Scarborough Walk of Fame. The 2015 inductees were honoured at the ball on Saturday night at the Scarborough Convention Centre with the goal to raise funds for The Scarborough Hospitals Diagnostic Imaging department. Ad d i n g t o t h e e xc i t e ment of the induction ceremonies Saturday morning at the Scarborough Town Centre was a performance by Scarborough’s Samba Squad. Also, Mayor John Tory made sure to express his gratitude to the life-long contributions of the five inductees and his appreciation for the boundless creativity originating from Scarborough. “Nowhere else in the city is there more talent than in Scarborough,” said Tory. Inducted into the Scarborough Walk of Fame at Saturday morning’s ceremony were Betty Carr, former publisher of The Scarborough Mirror; Farley Flex, Canadian music promoter; Dr. Sophie Hofstader, award-winning
dermatologist and community leader; Mike Holmes, home improvement guru, and Cherie Piper, Olympic gold medalist for hockey. Flex, best known for his contributions to the music industry through management and his work on Canadian Idol but most notably, his accomplishment of creating Canada’s first black-owned and operated radio station, Flow 93.5. In his acceptance speech, Flex made a point to note the significance of appreciating humble beginnings. “You can’t do anything or go anywhere without acknowledging the shoulders you stand on,” said Flex. The Scarborough Mirror caught up with Flex following the ceremony where the music magnate stressed the importance of community. “To know someone who grew up in the same neighbourhood or similar circumstances creates a path for inspiration. It’s very humbling and energizing,” said Flex. Hofstader was honoured for her many accomplishments at The Scarborough Hospital over the past 52 years. In her acceptance speech, the family physician shared the barriers she encountered to pursuing medicine as a woman and the tenacity she required to boldly refuse to accept the limitations which were being imposed upon her as a young female, physician. Speaking with The Mirror, Hofstader pointed to the importance of instilling the idea of good citizenry in youth, today.

Dr. Sophie Hofstader, second from left, with Dr. Bruce Shuckett and Dr. Nina Venka (both of The Scarborough Hospital), Mochrie and McGrath.
“You have to contribute to society and try to correct things which are wrong and try to mentor young people,” she said. C a r r, p u b l i s h e r o f Metrolands’s Scarborough Mirror and eight other community newspapers in Toronto until her retirement in 2012, was recognized for her support of the Scarborough community. Carr’s work with numerous local organizations on community initiatives and issues close to home, helping to bring positive attention to Scarborough were just some of the former publisher’s accomplishments which were highlighted. Carr said, “Twenty five years ago I arrived in Scarborough as a new publisher and it became my home. I share this with the team at the Scarborough Mirror. It is as much mine as it is theirs.” Carr said she was passionate about the field of journalism and it’s potential to create change. “Journalism is an honourable profession and you can make such a difference in the world,” said Carr. A three-time Olympic gold medalist, Piper thanked her family and friends for their support throughout her career and left the podium with inspiring words for the youth of Scarborough. “To the young girls and boys; dream big. Anything is possible,” said Piper. Holmes, Scarborough’s triple threat television host, philanthropist and home improvement contractor,

During his speech, Holmes said he was grateful to his father whom Holmes credited for the famous catch phrase, make it right. “To me, this star represents all the things I’ve done in my life. My father always said, ‘Make it right,’” said Holmes. As the ceremony was winding down, the new addition to the SWOF, The Rising Star Award was introduced by Earl Campbell, SWOF executive board president and chair. The Rising Star award will celebrate a young person within the Scarborough community who has made a difference. The first recipient of the award will be announced in 2017. The ceremony was brought to a close on a high note, making way for the festivities of the evening’s Kaleidoscope Ball gala with the help of Scarborough’s Inspiration Dance Group, which showcased their talents on stage.

Keepers, the zoo said, “switch the twins every few hours so each one gets care and milk directly from mom.” Whether the cubs are male or female is still unknown. You can see pictures, video and get more information on them and on giant panda conservation in the wild at www.torontozoo.com/ GiantPandaCubs Councillor seeks stricter parking ban While some people want the freedom to park on Scarborough streets at night, certain local councillors want to make the existing ban stricter. Jim Karygiannis, for one, said overnight parking in his Scarborough-Agincourt ward has become a “serious” problem. There is no permit parking on Scarborough
w
streets, and some years ago local councillors declared an “exclusion zone,” which means they will not consider requests for permits even if most homeowners on a street said they want them. Most local streets, however, still allow people to park for up to three hours at a time. Karygiannis wants to take that right away from 2 to 6 a.m. in his ward as an experiment, so the city can be sure “our streets can plowed effectively.” On his website, karygiannis.net, the councillor said there are streets in the ward each winter where emergency vehicles couldn’t get through during an emergency. The website was polling Ward 39 residents on the issue, and the councillor said initial results showed most who responded agreed with his proposal.

Er Shun may not have caught on, but the Toronto Zoo has been switching baby pandas on her for more than a week now. The tiny giant panda twins born on October 13 are still vulnerable, and the zoo said Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children has given its panda house an incubator previously used at SickKids’ neonatal intensive care unit. “The incubator is a critical piece of equipment that is being used by the giant panda team to give both cubs the best chance for survival,” Chris Dutton, the zoo’s head of veterinary services, said in a release Wednesday. Giant panda mothers with twins “will only look after one of them,” so the zoo, aided by two experts from China’s Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, are using “twin swapping.”

McNicoll Bus Garage plans rolling along The McNicoll Bus Garage took another small step to becoming reality as TTC officials were expected to present preliminary design concepts for the project at a public meeting in Scarborough this week. The $181-million project received a major boost over the summer when the Ontario Ministry of the Environment signed off on the last major legislative hurdle for the project. In doing so, it dismissed the concerns of a vocal group of north Scarborough residents who oppose the garage primarily on health grounds. Their concerns were deemed baseless by the TTC, as well as the Toronto Board of Health. With funding secured and design underway, the garage will likely open by 2019. parties rated on transit plans wFederal
Better late than never: The Council for Canadian Urbanism (CanU) released a report card on the infrastructure plans of the four main parties just before this week’s federal election.
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT Released late last week, the report card scores the Liberals and the Green party the highest for committing to improve public transit as well as major roads and highways. Overall CanU rates the Liberal, NDP and Green infrastructure plans higher than the Tories, but refrains from endorsing a party for the election. View the results at www. canadianurbanism.ca urged to lighten up at night wCyclists
As the daylight hours wane, Cycle Toronto is encouraging cyclists to Get Lit. The group, along with Toronto Police Services and other sponsors, is promoting an advocacy campaign to educate cyclists about the dangers of riding in the dark without proper lights. Unlit cyclists who are spotted can receive a set of front and rear bike reflectors for free.
As the group notes, along with being extremely dangerous, it will now cost cyclists $110 in fines for not having proper lighting. Look for Cycle Toronto’s bright orange Get Lit tent near Castlefrank station Tuesday, Oct. 27 starting at 6 p.m.

NDP loss not a local issue: Harris

>>>from page 1 Scarborough Southwest MPP Lorenzo Berardinetti and his wife, Ward 35 Scarborough Southwest Councillor Michelle Berardinetti, both Liberals. So was Gary Crawford, the Ward 36 Scarborough Southwest councillor and Toronto’s budget chief. Blair said he was proud to join this “team that serves this community,” and promised to work with them. Courted by more than one party, Blair announced he was seeking a Liberal nomination in the riding just after retiring as police chief. Several Liberals had sought the nomination for more than a year, but some quit the race soon after Blair appeared, offering him their support. Half-way through the long campaign, Blair called the waterfront district, the place where he grew up, a community in transition, and one “filled with potential.” He said Liberal promises to build new infrastructure resonated with residents. Democrats gathered in a pub west of the Liberal victory party, Harris, an IT technician who was his party’s post-secondary education critic, said local candidates didn’t have much to do with Blair’s win. “There is not a thing that we could have done to change this,” Harris told supporters at the Tara Inn on Kingston Road. “We’re always up for a fight, and we’ve always come back for a challenge and we’ll be back for more,” he pledged. Harris said local Liberals, including Blair and the Berardinettis, had allowed Second Base, Scarborough’s only youth shelter, to close as they campaigned for Blair. He said that was a “disgrace.” Charging Blair “spent most of the campaign running away” from issues, Harris also said NDP supporters can “hold our heads high” because they stuck to their principles. “I’d rather lose an election than lose my soul,” he said.
Councillor Berardinetti, h o w e v e r, s a i d B l a i r ’s w i n i s g re a t n e w s f o r Scarborough. “He has a proven track record and has dealt with many difficult situations, and he’ll be able to show that grit at Parliament,” she said. Crawford, who once ran in the riding for Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives, said Blair had name recognition among local voters. “They know him, and from what I’m seeing, they put their trust in him.” For all his status as a socalled celebrity candidate, Blair was dogged throughout the campaign about his stewardship of police during Toronto’s G20 summit in 2010 and his decisions on the police practice of carding. Harris charged Blair had not “taken responsibility for police abuses” committed during the G20, but the riding’s Green candidate, Tommy Taylor, seemed to relish each chance to challenge Blair over the summit.

Zahid takes riding for Liberals SCARBOROUGH CENTRE
MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Friends say Salma Zahid simply outworked her opponents to become the latest MP for Scarborough Centre. Zahid started a home catering business to make ends meet when she lived in Toronto’s Regent Park neighbourhood. On Monday, Oct. 19, the first-time Liberal candidate got 50.5 per cent of the votes, displacing Roxanne James, a Conservative who won the riding in 2011 and received 32.3 per cent. New Democrat Alex Wilson was a distant third with 11.6 per cent. “It’s a lovely Canadian success story. She’s an extremely hard-working person, and g e n u i n e,” s a i d G e o rg e Smitherman, a former MPP and Zahid’s political mentor, as her supporters arrived at a Brimley Road banquet hall for an election night party. A few years after Zahid arrived in Canada, Ontario’s Conservative Mike Harris government was forcing the
end of all-day kindergarten in Regent Park. Zahid, chair of the school council, worked Smitherman and other politicians to fight back, he recalled. “I was incredibly impressed with her from the get-go.” In an interview on Tuesday, Zahid pledged to work hard for Scarborough Centre over the next four years and keep an “open dialogue” with her constituents. Her constituency office in the riding will be known as a “community action centre” and have an open door policy, she said. “The real work starts now.” Zahid said she doesn’t think Monday’s result would be different had the marathon 2015 campaign been shorter. She was nominated last June, and has canvassed since January. Earlier in the campaign, Zahid said the riding encompasses the best of Canada, but is challenged. People in Scarborough

Centre, including many new immigrants, are struggling as her family once did, she said, adding some face a choice of “whether to pay the rent or have food on the table.” Wilson, a local pastor, said he was proud of the NDP campaign nationally and in the riding, but things shifted after the niqab issue cut NDP support in Quebec. That triggered “the old strategic vote against (Stephen) Harper” and pushed people to the Liberals, he said. It’s f r u s t ra t i n g , s a i d Wilson, that getting rid of the Conservatives was everybody’s number one concern, and people didn’t seem to care as much about other issues. James came out the winner in 2011 in a close three-way contest. Before polls in latter half of tHISt campaign showed a Liberal recovery, James had said responses from residents at the door were good. Libertarian candidate Katerina Androutsos received 3.3 per cent of the vote, ahead of Lindsay Thompson, a Green.

We take the time to get to know every jobseekerthatwalksthroughourdoors.Wewill work with you one-on-one to understand your strengths and needs; to fill in any skills-gaps; and to connect you with the right employer as quickly and seamlessly as possible. It can be daunting for jobseekers looking for work and for employers seeking the right candidate. YWCA Toronto facilitates the conversation that can make a difference in ensuring both needs are met. Kevin Ball, President of the Redfield Group, has used YWCA Toronto’s employer services for his recruitment needs through exclusive job fairs and free advertising. Mr. Ball states “as a business owner, I have
found thatYWCAToronto is the shining star of employment agencies. The team is extremely positive, organized; quick to respond, which in my business is critical. The job fairs are how they have helped us functionally – bringing in good quality candidates, and doing prescreening for us. They have been integral in assisting me and my business.” With two Scarborough locations at 3090 Kingston Rd. Mary Ward grads DALA to take part in concert >>>from page 1 Carabine, a Mary Ward music teacher, decided the school and its community could raise a lot of money in a short time. He star ted organizing
Friday’s event with Mark Morra, a religion teacher with a son who is four – the same age as Alan Kurdi, the child whose body on a Turkish beach forced Canadians to pay attention to
the refugee crisis at last. Morra said he gave $100 to the Red Cross, but that “didn’t satisfy my conscience.” So far, the drive has gotten a wonderful response, said
Morra, who planned an information session for students earlier this week on Syrian refugees, trying, he said, to dispel the “fallacy” they are somehow dangerous to Canada.
French as a Second Language French Programs at the TDSB Applications for Early French Immersion are open from November 2 to December 3, 2015. Information evenings run throughout November.
F r i d a y ’s f e a t u r e d g ro u p i s t h e Ju n o Award-nominated duo DALA, whose members Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine met at the school (combining the last letters of their first names), and have been full-time musicians since 2002. Carabine, who is the teacher’s sister, said people will come away from the concert feeling hopeful. DALA’s sets normally run from “melancholy to the joyfully absurd,” she said. “Above all, we
want people to have a great night.” The group will play one song, Fortress, that Sheila Carabine wrote years ago. It’s about the risk of becoming apathetic, she said. “I feel inaction is itself a decision.” Tickets are $10 for students and $20 for adults and will be available at the door; if people want to pay more for the cause, that’s definitely allowed. New chairs for TSH advisory group A volunteer group advising The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) on behalf of patients and Scarborough residents has new leaders. Pat Sherman, a health sector consultant, was appointed chairperson of the hospital’s Community and Patient Advisory Council by TSH’s Board of Directors this month. Sherman has lived in Scarborough for more than 35 years, and is well-known in Agincourt as an advocate for the hospital as well as a Sheppard Avenue subway extension. “This is a positive way of supporting and giving back

to my community. I am passionate about improving the quality of life in Scarborough,” he said in a release from the hospital this week. Sherman replaced Denis Lanoue, a commmunity leader from Agincourt’s Heathwood neighbourhood. TSH also said Ron Lowe, a retired teacher and principal, was appointed the group’s vice chairperson. “I look forward to working in cooperation with all stakeholders to enable The Scarborough Hospital to reach its goals of serving and meeting the needs of the diverse community,” Lowe
said in the release. It’s a challenging period for the hospital, which has the oldest operating rooms in the province at its General campus. TSH called off a merger with neighbouring Rouge Valley Health System early last year. A provincial panel has studied services and conditions at hospitals in Scarborough and West Durham and was due to hand in its recommendations last week. The hospital is recruiting more members for the advisory council: the deadline to apply is Oct. 30. More information is at www.tsh.to
Councillors bid farewell to New Year’s Levee Scarborough Community Council has selected Option 1 regarding the New Year’s Levee for 2016: there won’t be one. Apparently, the tradition of drinking a hot chocolate and shaking hands with Scarborough councillors
every Jan. 2 is gone forever. It survived Scarborough’s amalgamation with Toronto, but attendance dropped, and a decision was made not to hold levees in 2014 or 2015. Money was re-directed to cover expenses for the Christmas tree lighting cer-
emony at Scarborough Civic Centre. Community councillors gave the issue another look this month but passed again, unwilling to fund the party out of their own budgets. Councillors can still have their own levees in their wards if they want.

Liberal McKay wins seventh term Chan re-elected in Liberal stronghold TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Scarborough-Guildwood re-elected Liberal MP John McKay to his seventh term in office Monday night. The incumbent Liberal MP received 60 per cent support in the riding, 25,187 votes. “I’m pumped,” said McKay following his win, which was part of a national Liberal takeover. “I think that Mr. Trudeau has caught the imagination of the nation, and I hope to be a significant part of that.” Scarborough’s longestserving MP, McKay has represented ScarboroughGuildwood since its first election in 2004. He previously represented ScarboroughEast, which was dissolved to make way for ScarboroughGuildwood. Conservative Chuck Konkel tried again to break the riding’s Liberal stronghold, after finishing 691 votes behind McKay last election. Konkel collected 11,109 votes this time, 26.5 per cent support. New Democrat Laura
SCARBOROUGH GUILDWOOD
Casselman came in third with 11 per cent support, 4,720 votes. Following her defeat, she said she knew she faced an uphill battle running against McKay. Support for her party fell across Canada, with Tom Mulcair’s New Democrats losing 51 seats. “Nationally, we’ve been in this position before, and we’ve risen again,” she said. “A lot of people voted in this election out of fear.” Support for the Green party fell again in the riding this election, to less than 1.5 per cent, with Kathleen Holding taking 606 votes. Independents Kevin Clarke, representing The People’s Political Party, and Paul Coulbeck, of the Marijuana Party of Canada, earned 185 and 142 votes respectively. McKay said he looks forward to working with the new prime minister. “I hope to participate in
fulfilling Mr. Trudeau’s platform, and in particular the infrastructure commitments to transit and housing,” he said. “I’m hoping to see that we move forward on the electrification of the GO train system, which is very important. I’m hoping that we move forward on the Scarborough subway, and if that also includes the Smart Track, I certainly won’t oppose that. And also the grade separations at Morningside and Galloway Road, and Scarborough Golf Club Road, which I think will go a long way towards helping with the electrification.” He added he believes the long campaign helped people remember why they didn’t like Harper. He added it’s gratifying getting another nod from voters. “It is kind of a validation of 18 years of hard work, and what I would think is good constituency work, which has seen us through the good times, and also through the not-so-good times,” he said.
SCARBOROUGH AGINCOURT
MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Scarborough-Agincourt remained a Liberal stronghold Monday, with voters there showing they wanted Arnold Chan to return as their MP. He finished with 51.9 per cent of the vote, outpacing first-time Conservative candidate Bin Chang, who got a respectable 38 per cent. While many attributed the country-wide majority win to the popularity of Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, Chan said 80,000 new volunteers knocking on 11 million doors were behind it. That, and a Liberal platform promising cities such as Toronto “unprecedented” investment in seniors’ housing, public transit and other infrastructure. “I think that platform will be an enabler for Scarborough,” added Chan, who said it’s time opportunities for jobs and growth returned to the area. “For the first time, you
from some duties this year to be treated for a rare form of cancer called nasopharyngeal, but returned before the long campaign began. He grew up in the riding, where, he said, he has heard from both working families and seniors that jobs and the economy were the dominant issue. Chang, a corporate finance expert, could not be contacted Tuesday to comment on the election results. Earlier in the campaign, she said it seemed to her that Tory fortunes in the riding were finally changing. “There are more blue signs than red signs,” she said.
actually have a federal partner,” he said in an interview early on Tuesday morning. A soft-spoken lawyer, Chan is a different representative for the riding than Jim Karygiannis, the often-fiery MP who held the riding, since it was created in 1988. In 2011, Karygiannis’s support dipped 11 per cent below his 2008 result, but he still got 45 per cent of votes. After 25 years, though, he resigned, and has since become a city councillor. Chan took the resulting byelection easily last June with 59 per cent of the vote, though only about 30 per cent of eligible voters showed up to cast a ballot. New Democrat Laura Patrick finished third Monday with 7.8 per cent of votes. Also running were Debra Scott, a Green candidate, who was fourth, and Jude Coutinho of the Christian Heritage Party. Risk factors of breast cancer can include your gender, age, breast density and genetics. Women have a higher chance of getting breast cancer than men, as do women over the age of 60. Family history that includes ovarian and breast cancer in female relatives can also raise the risk, along with having a particular genetic disposition. Women with dense breasts have also been shown to have an increased risk.

Understanding your personal risks and how your lifestyle impacts these risks can help you in the long run.
GET SCREENED A mammogram x-ray is an effective form of detecting early signs of breast cancer. The procedure generally takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes and is relatively painless. During your first screening appointment, you will undergo a mammogram procedure where the breast is compressed under two plates in order to create a clear image of breast tissue. It is recommended to get a mammogram every one to two years starting at age 40.
PREVENTATIVE MEASURES Practicing self-screening can also help with early diagnosis. It is recommended that women take a moment each month to perform a self-breast exam. Women should begin this exam in their early twenties and look for abnormalities such as lumps, bumps, redness, changes in nipple size and abnormal excretions. If anything abnormal is detected during the self exam, an appointment should be made with a doctor.

To help increasingly younger patients, braces are now more discreet and comfortable How early sHould my cHildren be examined? With today’s technology, children as young as five are candidates for orthodontics. At this age, kids will have all of their “baby” teeth in, and permanent teeth usually start to come in around age six or seven. Since bones are still growing at that age, it is easy for dentists and orthodontists to evaluate the teeth and jaw for overcrowding and spacing issues.
Metroland Media Toronto would like to congratulate the 2015 Carrier Scholarship/RRSP Essay Award Winners:
wHat problems can early ortHodontics fix?
“
Orthodontic treatment can help with proper jaw size and crowding. It promotes better bone growth and allows teeth to grow in straight. When left untreated, a condition called “crossbite” can cause crowding and uneven jaw development. While protruding front teeth cannot be permanently corrected until “adult teeth” have come in, early orthodontic treatment can reduce the severity of the problem. “We know that early intervention is key,” says Dr. Fox. “Early treatment is important because early realignment of teeth can reduce or prevent full orthodontic treatment in later years.”
The local newspaper is a strong and effective instrument of communication whose influence on community culture—on understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing—is unparalleled.

It will also enhance long term periodontal health, giving them the best smile and boost of confidence when their self-image is developing in their teen years.

Personal Prayer To The Holy Spirit Our Mother of Perpetual Help
Holy Spirit Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favor has been granted.

She is not one to go to bars, and she has had a hard time meeting the right person in her small community. She is always up to try new things and open to new experiences. Jane is a bit shy at first, and she is nervous about dating, but really wants to meet the right person to settle down with. She is very open and accepting of people, she’s very non-judgmental, and cares more about who someone is on the inside rather than on the outside.
