A report that could bring major changes to Scarborough and Durham Region hospitals will reach Ontario Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins soon, sources this week said. Appointed by the province on April 10, the Scarborough and West Durham Health Care Services Panel was given six months to give Hoskins a “vision” for the hospitals’ services, administration and future infrastructure needs. Though its tenure appears to have expired, on Tuesday, the expert panel’s chair insisted its recommendations will be delivered to the province’s health minister when they were expected. “The panel’s work remains on time and we look forward to submitting the report soon,” Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre CEO Dr. Barry McLellan said in a message. A ministry spokesperson this week said the report was expected “shortly.” A proposed merger of The Scarborough Hospital and Rouge Valley Health System failed last spring after both hospitals told the province their facilities in Scarborough were overcrowded and obsolete.

School walk remembers Lauren Burry ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Students at a Scarborough school held a walk to raise money for leukemia research and pay tribute to Lauren Burry, a local teen who passed away after a seven-week battle with the disease. “Leukemia research has come a long way in the past 50 years and survival rates are dramatically better,” Lauren’s mom Elvira said. “However, it would be great if they were even better and blood cancer didn’t have to be fatal.” The neighbourhood walk by students from St. Dominic Savio Catholic School Friday raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. Lauren’s dad Vince, who taught at the school for 10 years, initiated the now-annual event. T h o u g h o n e n e ve r re c ov ers from the loss of a child, said Vince, “doing walks like this and getting involved is like medicine. It’s therapeutic. You have to stay positive.” Lauren, 14, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on July 20, 2012. Though ALL has a five-year survival rate of 85 per cent, Lauren had a rare aggressive form of the disease that didn’t respond well to treatment. She died on Sept. 6, 2012. “She was a great kid,” Elvira said. “She had a great sense of humour (and) she was also very, very loving.
Lauren Burry, photo above, was remembered during a walk at St. Dominic Savio Catholic School to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. Right, leading the walk is Lauren’s father Vince, who taught at the school for 10 years. Lauren died in September of 2012 after a battle with lymphoblastic leukemia.
She had a kind heart.” Several months before she was diagnosed, Lauren wrote a poem describing her dreams of “having an amazing singing voice” and becoming a teacher and her fear of dying young. “A lot of things look like they were premonitions, looking at it from the perspective now,” Elvira said. The Burry family continues to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the hopes of making “the future a little brighter for other people facing this disease.” To make a donation, visit http:// bit.ly/1jRntSy

Lauren’s poem showed love of life Lauren’s poem written in the fall of 2011: I’m a fun girl who loves life. I wonder what my life will be like 20 years from now. I hear crying dolphins in my pool. I see a singing cloud juggling spoons. I want to go to a movie with Cody Simpson. I’m a fun girl who loves life. I dream of having an amazing singing voice. I feel the beautiful hair of Justin Bieber. I touched the cotton candy clouds in the purple sky. I worry that I will die young. I cry at the death of people I know. I’m a fun girl who loves life. I understand that I will have a limited time on Earth. I say that the end of the world is not in 2012. I dream of becoming a teacher. I try to do the best that I can in school. I hope to grow up and do great things. I’m a fun girl who loves life.”

Stabbed teen recovering A teenage boy is recovering after being stabbed near a Midland and Lawrence avenues school Monday. Emergency crews were called to the area of Bendale Business and Technical Institute on Midland Avenue for a stabbing at 12:23 p.m. Police said the victim, believed to be a former Bendale student, was beaten and stabbed in the shoulder on nearby Treewood Street. He was taken to hospital in serious, but nonlife-threatening condition. “We still haven’t been able to take a statement from him. He’s still in the hospital,” Toronto Police Supt. John Tanouye said Tuesday. “We’ve got some persons of interest. We’ve got some witnesses from the school.”

ith fall’s darker days now taking hold, and the turning back of the clocks early this Sunday morning as we go back to standard time, pedestrians are at an increased risk of being struck by a vehicle on our city’s streets. Toronto police will be warning drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to be extra cautious once Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday. Caution should be the operative word at all times, but it’s especially important in these dark days of November as the number of incidents in which pedestrians are struck by vehicles rises significantly in Toronto. The first week of November last year saw five incidents in the city involving pedestrians being struck in one day (Tuesday, Nov. 4, two days after Daylight Savings Time ended). What we – drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and everyone else who uses our roads – need to do is be that much more aware of the dangers, focus on the safety of all, and take some basic precautions to increase the odds of everyone our view going about their day safely, but especially in the morning and evening rush hours. That’s when We can all the advancing darkness, along take basic with confusion due to the time in the morning hours, precautions change has its greatest impact on the roads. The most dangerous time of day is between 5 and 7 p.m., police say. Pedestrians being struck by drivers making left turns are the most common incident, as it takes a moment for driver’s eyes to adjust from the brightness of the headlights coming toward them to the darker intersection. This problem is made worse if the pedestrian crossing is wearing dark clothing. Obviously, pedestrians need to think about wearing brighter clothing and not to be distracted by cellphones while crossing the street. Along with the increased need for caution Sunday due to the time change, we also remind our readers to be extra careful on the roads Halloween night this Saturday as excited trick-or-treaters hit the streets. By taking a few moments to think, and being aware of the increased dangers, we can make this Halloween and November safer for all.

Trudeau’s election comes with lack of mandate Politics often seems a kind of echo chamber. Themes and movements bounce back and forth, distorting as they go but recognizable for longer than might make sense. It’s tempting to trace the election of Justin Trudeau’s majority back through the election of Kathleen Wynne, the improbable spectacle of an NDP government in Alberta – even the ascent of gentleman John Tory in Toronto – as a particularly resonant echo. nod to the left wing All of these elections mark a repudiation of the hard right conservatism exemplified by the nowformer Harper government, the Progressive Conservatives in Ontario, the depraved populism of Etobicoke’s Ford family, and a nod, at least, to the left wing big-government ideas that the New Democratic Party used to
david nickle the city get behind. In none of these cases, of course, is it a sea-change toward precisely those ideas. When Tory won the 2014 Toronto mayoralty race on a platform of big transit infrastructure and progressive social policies, he was closely followed by Doug Ford in support, leaving New Democrat candidate Olivia Chow in the dust. Similarly, Wynne and Trudeau may have their majority governments, but they didn’t mop the floor with their right-leaning opponents. Trudeau did very well, but it was hardly a rout. If Harper had chosen to stay, he would have led a healthy official opposition – a far cry from the electoral massacre visited upon the federal Progressive Conservatives
in 1993, when the caucus was reduced to only two. Lots of people supported Harper, and the Fords, and former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak in his plan to gut the public service. The common thread? Lots more people decided that they definitively did not want any of those politicians anywhere near the levers of power, and collectively sent someone else along instead. voter trust It’s a funny sort of mandate – not really a mandate at all, when you think of it – that makes it more difficult than usual to chart success. Do a plurality of people in Toronto really think Tory’s central campaign promise of building SmartTrack is a good idea, or are they just relieved to know that the Fords won’t be in power? Voter trust in Ontario
Premier Wynne is a big question, as her Liberal government embarks on a very Conservativesounding sell-off of Hydro One. And as for Justin Trudeau and the new Liberal government in Ottawa: do his supporters also support his deficitrunning plan, his support of Bill C-51 in some form or another, or whatever else the Liberals choose to bring about? Perhaps, but it appears from polls and the numbers that what Trudeau’s supporters really want is that he replace Stephen Harper. This is the downside of strategic voting. It is both a way of saying what it is that you don’t want, and not particularly caring about what it is you do. The echo is, as echoes often are, discouragingly empty.

Help for the office Halloween party
T
he signs are up all over the office advertising our Halloween party. It’s being touted as the biggest one ever. Judging by the flurry of questions in my mailbox, a lot of organizations are planning similar bashes. Here are a few samples. Q. Our company says we’re supposed to pick a costume that resembles our work behaviour. Well, I’m known around here as someone whose attendance record is, shall we say, spotty at the best of times. I also have a reputation as a bachelor who plays the field. I’m required to pick something scary that combines the two. Any ideas? A. Just one. How about a werewolf? Q. I’ve worn either celebrity look-a-like or action figure outfits on Halloween since I was a kid, but there’s a costume contest at our company with big prizes and I want to try and win. So I’ve decided my
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY best chance is to be a witch. The thing is, I have no idea what makes a Halloween witch tick. Where’s the best place to look to find that out? A. Download a wicked witch app and make sure it includes spell check. Q. My plan is to go to our party and unwind. I have no intention of trying to be the centre of attention. I’m not the least bit interested in having coworkers gabbing away about my costume until next Halloween, so I don’t want to wear a provocative get-up. With that in mind, anything I shouldn’t get dressed up as? A. Yup. Considering “unwind” is the operative word, then you better not go as a mummy. Q. I’m in charge of the food for the Halloween party for our company. Our theme is Philadelphia vam-
pires. What should I have on the menu? A. That’s easy. Philly cheesestake. Q. The buzz is that everybody in our entire office is going to be showing up as zombies this year? What’s your take on that? A. Are you absolutely sure that’s a Halloween party they’re talking about and not a come-as-you-are party? Q. I’m beside myself, I tell ya. I can’t eat or sleep I’m so nervous. I’ve been asked to run our office Halloween shebang and it’s just a few days away and all I have been able to come up with so far is a skeleton of an idea. Any advice? A. Yeah. Relax. You’ve nailed it. You don’t need any help. Your concept sounds spooktacular.

business on the rebound
Launch party crowd shows enthusiasm for new Scarborough Business Association MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The size of the crowd at a launch party last week sent a clear message: Scarborough businesses want a voice of their own. They used to have a voice – a chamber of commerce – but that was before Scarborough was amalgamated into Toronto, and part of Scarborough “died a little bit,” said Brad Duguid, Ontario’s economic development minister. But now, added the Scarborough Centre MPP, local businesses need to cluster together, work together, and mentor together to grow themselves from the roots up. “And this organization has the ability to do it,” Duguid promised the first large gathering of the Scarborough Business Association (SBA). The group chose a board of directors six months ago, and sold out its 200 tickets for a party last Thursday at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre. Scarborough has strengths that seem to be a secret to the rest of the world, and even to the rest of Toronto, said SBA president Marg Middleton. “It’s up to us to see the right people understand how desirable Scarborough is for business,” said Middleton, the former general manager of Metroland Media Toronto, which publishes The Scarborough Mirror. “We can accomplish so much more if we work together.” Forming an SBA, a rebirth of the Scarborough chamber, was one of 14 recommendations made after a year-long review of Scarborough’s problems and potential, sponsored by the area’s Rotary clubs. At the party, Middleton thanked Rotarian Dave Hardy, an organizer of the Scarborough revival campaign, for a vision “that got this community talking.” She also wanted members of the young business group to lead by example, and turn to someone in Scarborough the next time they needed to hire someone, buy some supplies, or select a restaurant. U n i v e r s i t y o f To r o n t o Scarborough principal Bruce Kidd said the $250-million Pan Am Centre on the campus “showed the whole world what we’re capable of here in Scarborough.” Kidd said he’s glad to see the association provide a voice for the community’s interests. “

upcoming On Nov. 10, the Scarborough Business Association is hosting its first education event, free for members, at Centennial College’s Progress Campus, where Centennial instructor Chadi Kandil will present Using Social Media and Digital Strategy to Grow Your Business. I think this is a great night for Scarborough,” he added. Scarborough Centre Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker, one of Toronto’s deputy mayors, said his colleagues at all levels of government want more suggestions on how to make Scarborough better and more profitable for business. Earlier this year, Mayor John
Tory said he would move some city staff to Scarborough and then encourage private employers to do the same. De Baeremaeker said the city has full-time staff assigned to help bring businesses to Scarborough, and is working on special tax incentives and business retention programs for the area. He also guaranteed his audience the Scarborough subway extension is coming and businesses “are going to feel that change” once it does. De Baeremaeker also assured people the new line will go up McCowan Road to Sheppard Avenue and add an extra station at Danforth Road and Eglinton Avenue – decisions the TTC and the city are still studying. Later, he stuck by his prediction, calling a Danforth-Eglinton station “a no-brainer” considering the
mission ‘We are intensely focused on helping Scarborough business by driving prosperity, creating forums for networking, providing education and opportunity. We recognize Scarborough’s strengths of location, skilled labour and diversity. Strong business benefits the entire community.’ area’s “incredible redevelopment potential,” once an environmental assessment on the route is finished late this year or early in 2016. “But it will come, and we will be in the ground by 2018,” he said. Duguid, who plans with Michael Thompson, Toronto’s economic development chair, to lead a provincial task force on maximizing benefits of the extension, said once
the route is determined, that group can identify commercial nodes for potential growth and opportunities. “And it is good to have a federal partner committed to investing more in infrastructure, because that was lacking before,” he said. Andi Shi, executive director of CPAC, a Scarborough-based crosscultural group for professionals, said he saw appeal for his members in joining the SBA. Business people like to network and look for opportunities, he said. Middleton said the SBA will form an advisory committee, and is looking for more members to “help us build momentum in a community that we know has unlimited potential.”

5 reno tips to create more space
SCARBOROUGH MIRROR | Thursday, October 29, 2015 |

Tips for entertaining at home Entertaining at home is a fun and convenient way to get together with friends and family. Entertaining at home is less expensive than renting out a venue or hitting the town, and party hosts know the amenities they have available to them. Although convenient, home entertaining also requires more work on the part of the event host, including readying the house for company. But with some creative thinking and a little sweat equity, hosts can throw an enjoyable and memorable gettogether from the comforts of their own homes. Begin by going room-by-room and making note of what will need to be done. If you’ve entertained at home before, you may have a mental inventory of what worked and what didn’t, so make changes accordingly this time around. Focus only on the spaces where guests will congregate, such as the living room, den, kitchen, and dining area. Develop a decluttering plan to remove items from entertaining spaces and store them safely away. A little bit of clutter can make a space seem unruly and unclean. Move delicate items, such as collectibles, to a storage location, returning them to their original spaces after the party has ended. If necessary, move some furniture or take away a piece or two to free up more space. Folding chairs may be more practical than a large sofa.
Expend the bulk of your cleaning efforts on the entryway, bathrooms and living areas of the home, as guests will spend a lot of their time in these areas. Enlist the help of the household to tidy the house and then tackle deep cleaning room by room. Remove anything you do not want your guests to see. One or two inquisitive guests may check behind the shower curtain or even open up the medicine cabinet, so remove personal or potentially sensitive items. Recruit help to ready your home or even assist you on the day of the party. A cleaning service can make fast work of scouring the house, while a waitstaff can help serve food and keep drinks refilled, enabling you to mingle with guests. If the idea of cooking for all of your guests is overwhelming, hire a caterer to provide the food. Stock up on stain removal products to tackle the inevitable spills. While you no doubt hope to keep your house as clean as possible, expect some dropped food or spilled drinks. Keep a cleaner at the ready so you can quickly combat stains and guests can continue having a good time. The more complicated the party is, the more time you will need to prepare your home. Afford yourself ample time to prepare so you are not feeling rushed come the day of the party.
— MS
As real estate prices continue to climb, the cost to trade up an existing home for a larger one has increased substantially. As a result, more and more Canadians are choosing to renovate their homes, rather than relocating. In fact, it was recently revealed that renovation spending in Canada reached a record $68 billion last year, outpacing spending on new home construction. While the hunt for more square footage can be challenging, homeowners shouldn’t feel like a costly second story or complete addition are the only options. Here are five great ways to create or optimize space in your existing home:
Finish the basement. This one renovation holds limitless potential and can increase the resale value or income potential of your home. Think about the possibilities: a home theatre, office, spare bedroom, basement apartment or recreation room. The key to doing it successfully is to focus on what’s behind the walls, especially since moisture is a common issue in basements. Choosing the right insulation is critical. Look for products that are vapour permeable, dimensionally stable and mould and moisture resistant.
Convert your garage. For many homeowners, the garage becomes an overflow room for storage––and is often a walk-in headache. Instead, convert it into another living space, like a guest bedroom or home office. Install carpet and quality thermal insulation to keep in warmth and block outdoor noise.
Choose furniture and accessories carefully. Adopt a minimalist’s eye. Begin looking around your home for furniture or accessories that overwhelm the space. Interior designers recommend choosing low-profile or small-scale furniture for rooms with less square footage. Dual-purpose items, such as ottomans with storage chests inside, are a budget-friendly way to save on space while staying organized.
Create an open-concept feel with light and colour. If your home wasn’t blessed with towering windows, installing French doors and pot lights can encourage light to travel more freely, creating the illusion of space. Likewise, choosing a paint colour for walls, trim and mouldings that is lighter and cooler in tone (think soft greys or blues) will help to reflect light and give the room a more open feel.
Remove non-load-bearing walls. Homeowners have the opportunity to rethink the layout of their home by removing non-load-bearing walls. Removing structurally unnecessary walls can make your whole home feel larger and improve the flow, lighting and function of your home.

Work on new Rouge Park legislation expected to begin shortly >>>from page 1 ronmental groups arguing the federal approach to a park weakened protection for ecology in the Rouge Valley. Last week, however, Duguid said Liberal leader Justin Trudeau and area Liberal MPs offer stronger protection for the Rouge, which “bodes very well” for a transfer soon. Trudeau is expected to name a cabinet on Nov. 4. Duguid said as soon as an environment minister is chosen, the province will join an effort to turn the park, which the pre-
vious government created through legislation, into what it should be. “In the coming weeks we’ll be starting that work,” he said. Gary Anandasangaree, newly elected MP for Scarborough-Rouge Park, said he expects to meet with Liberal colleagues John McKay (Scarborough-Guildwood), Jane Philpott (Markham-Stouffville) and Duguid on changes to the park legislation. “We’ll work hard to get the full dream that Rouge Park really was,” Anandasangaree said. Philpott defeated Paul Calandra,
who was parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and a staunch defender of tenant farmers in the park. Farmers have leased land in Scarborough’s Rouge Valley, and nearby in Markham, Pickering and Uxbridge, since massive federal and provincial expropriations in the 1970s for a Pickering airport and other development. Parks Canada’s vision for the Rouge NUP, supported by the Conservatives, put agriculture on an equal footing with plans for
environmental protection. It ensured all farming in the park – including thousands of acres in Markham – could stay, but blocked creation of a 600-metre-wide forested “main ecological corridor” in previous provincial and Rouge Park plans. Harper, in a pre-election announcement, promised to add 5,200 more acres to the Rouge NUP (land set aside by a previous Liberal government as green space but not incorporated into Rouge Park). Harper also increased the government’s proposed investment
in the Rouge. The first in a new class of urban national parks, he pledged, would see $170.5 million spent over 10 years, and $10.6 million each year after that. Groups including Ontario Nature, Environmental Defence and Friends of the Rouge Watershed (FRW), however, continued arguing the park’s priority must be the ecological integrity of the Rouge. This week, FRW’s general manager Jim Robb said he sees the “path is pretty much cleared” to reaching their goal, though conservationists still have work to do.

Vivian House eyed for heritage status MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s Preservation Board wants to give a house in southwest Scarborough provincial heritage status to save it from demolition. Dating from 1901, the Laurel CANADA PROVINCE OF QUEBEC DISTRICT OF BEAUHARNOIS
Avenue home was built in the “Ontario House” style, and is one of the oldest remaining from the time when the neighbourhood was a railroad hub known as Scarborough Junction, the advisory board heard last week. Also known as the Vivian House because of its four-decade-long
association with the Vivian family, the house south of Danforth Avenue was on a list of Scarborough historic sites before amalgamation with Toronto in 1998. The current owner has applied for a demolition permit, and “designation of the property is
required to refuse demolition” before Nov. 24, board members were told. City council will vote on the board’s approval of heritage status at its meeting next month.

25 years ago, Platinum Home Design and Renovations was just getting its start. Owner Gus George wanted a business that people could trust and Platinum’s success proves he did just that. Platinum has grown to be one of Toronto’s leading window and door renovators, servicing thousands of customers in the GTA, from Oshawa to Oakville and Newmarket to the lake. The team is committed to a uniform standard of excellence in service and workmanship to give clients the best experience. 65 to 70 per cent of current clients have either worked with Platinum in the past or been referred by friends who have. The high levels of customer satisfaction may come from the lifetime warranties on all services, friendly and knowledgeable staff and top quality products. The team has its own high quality brand of windows — Enerview. These windows come with a lifetime guarantee. Included is a coating called
“Neat”Glass. This comes with no extra fee and uses UV rays and rain water to repel and remove dirt. You can trust Platinum’s products and installation. All installers are Window Wise certified. This means everything is done perfectly to code using the right methods and materials according to Canadian guidelines. Platinum is currently offering a deal of 35 per cent off all windows and doors, including the “Neat” self-cleaning glass on all windows. The main office is located at 3001 Markham Road, #16, but there will soon be another location for visitors in Vaughan. My husband lost his job. We fell behind on our mortgage. The bank was seizing our home. I still can’t believe that you gave us an emergency mortgage with no proof of income. You saved our home & gave us extra cash to get by until he finds another job. Thanks! C.J. Ask her about: COMMERCIAL - FARM - CONSTRUCTION
