Terry Fox is arguably one of the most recognized people in Canadian history having inspired millions of people around the world to run for

cancer. Joseph LeMoine, 79, lead organizer of the Scarborough West Hill run has been raising money since its debut in 1980. “Our Terry Fox Run started out with family and friends, and

then opened up to the public with new and returning runners every year,” LeMoine said. LeMoine — inspired by Fox 34 years ago — realized the importance of fighting cancer, a sickness that will hit two in five Canadians in their lifetimes,

while one in four will die from the disease according to the Canadian Cancer Society. “A number of my family members have lost battles with cancer and some have fortunately been able to beat >>>TERRY, page 12

Our focus is the grassroots organizations, the average Joe or Jill – people who do great things but don’t always get the recognition they deserve. Now’s their time to shine! This year, the Scarborough Urban Hero Awards will be presented on Oct. 21. But we need your help to find this year’s nominees. Please go online to submit nominations. Individuals, groups and businesses can be nominated in any of six categories: Arts and Culture, Community, Education, Environment, Health and Sciences, and Sports. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 15. Please visit www.urbanheroes.ca to access the nomination form, and learn more about the awards.

Groups applaud decision for more Rouge Park lands protection Ali Raza araza@insidetoronto.com Conservation groups are applauding the province’s decision to deny the transfer of its lands to the federal government for the proposed Rouge National Urban Park. Ontario Infrastructure Minister Brad Duguid recently wrote a letter regarding the legislation for establishing the park or Bill C-40. According to the letter, refusal of the land transfer was grounded on the province’s requirement to “meet or exceed” standards of ecological integrity. The legislation lacked

these requirements, Duguid’s letter said. “The legislation needs to ensure that the natural values of the park will be protected in the long run,” said Tim Gray, executive director of Environmental Defence in response to Duguid’s letter. “The current draft just doesn’t do that.” Gray said Environmental Defence understands why the province is hesitant to transfer the land under circumstances that would offer less protection than what it currently has. Parks Canada, one of the main

drivers of the national park initiative is holding an open house in Scarborough next week to engage with the community about its draft management plan. Respect But conservation groups — like Friends of the Rouge Watershed — believe the plan should be made in consistency and conjunction with existing provincial plans. “We’re disappointed that they haven’t paid respect to the last 24 years of provincial public planning (of the park),” said Jim Robb, general

manager of Friends of the Rouge Watershed. Design “That’s an improper way to design a park for the people, you can’t ignore what people have already done for the last 24 years.” Environmental Defence believes the current legislation lacks adequate measures to ensure ecological integrity. It believes this is partly due to existing development in the park. Gray made reference to other national parks with existing develop-

ment and that their ecology is still protected. “Look at Banff, there’s a large town and ski hills in the middle of a national park,” Gray said. “In any national park, wouldn’t you want to prioritize nature?” Environmental Defence and other conservation groups advocating stronger legislation for the transfer hope that “priority will be given to nature conservation” and that it needs to be “explicit” at the draft management planning.

et this be a municipal election campaign about ideas: not just the sharing of ideas but also how they can get implemented. Ideas on how our neighbourhoods can grow and evolve. Ideas on how our residents can become more engaged. Ideas on how our citizens can work together. On Friday afternoon, the final candidate list for Toronto’s mayor, councillors and school board trustees will be set. And we need to see what our candidates have to offer. But in addition to concrete proposals for their respective communities, candidates must offer how they intend to work with others – the citizens they’ll be representing as well their our view political colleagues. When it comes to representYour municipal ing constituents, it is possible earn respect – and ulticandidates must to mately build consensus – from earn their votes a wide range of viewpoints. That comes from being professional, from being diligent and by listening to all stakeholders. When it comes to working with political colleagues, Toronto council is made up of 45 elected representatives. The Toronto District School Board has 23. The Toronto Catholic District School Board has 13. An individual running for office is ultimately just one voice at the table. Even someone with the power and resources of the mayor’s office can have their vision sidelined – and we did witness that in this most recent term of council. Toronto has a lot of diverse (and sometimes competing) interests. Being able to connect with a diverse group of stakeholders on a myriad of issues – especially on those where a fundamental disagreement exists – is not an easy task, but it is a necessary one. To the candidates: Be prepared to offer your vision. Be prepared to back it up with facts and observations. But be prepared to explain a more challenging question: How would you work with your constituents and elected colleagues to push that vision forward? To Toronto’s voters: Inform yourselves on the issues that matter in your respective communities. Respect your vote – and make the candidates earn it. For more information, including stories and candidate profiles, please visit our election website, www. insidetoronto.com/2014torontovotes

Following in Jose Bautista’s ‘gone yard’ steps I don’t catch all the Blue Jays games, but it sure seems like every time I do tune in, Jose Bautista has just “gone yard.” Usually at a key moment, too. For those who don’t keep up with baseball lingo, going yard is a more colourful way to describe a home run. For those who don’t keep up with baseball, let alone its lingo, a home run is when a batter hits the ball over the fence after it’s travelled the length of the yard – a.k.a. park, a.k.a. playing field – hence the phrase. Anyhow, announcers love the expression, using it repeatedly in various forms; it has become a mainstay of baseball highlight reels. Friday night after Bautista and teammate Edwin Encarnacion each clobbered their 30th home runs of the season, it was a veritable gone yard fest on all the sports shows. In fact, I was so inundated with the phrase I couldn’t get it out of my head the next day and Saturday night

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY I fell asleep right after turning on the Jays game and had the strangest dream. Obi-Wan Kenobi was whispering it to me. “Go yard, Luke, go yard,” he urged. “Why are you calling me Luke?” I asked. “Just be happy I’m in your fantasy and go yard, already,” he snapped. “Will the force be with me venerable one?” “The back of my hand will be with you in a second if you don’t get a move on,” he growled. “A little less talk and a little more action. Now, go yard.” Then he vanished in a puff of smoke, although it was hard to tell if it was actual fumes or just special effects. I was groggy when I woke up Sunday morning and could still hear his words as I headed outside hoping fresh air would clear

my head. But no such luck. I was immediately greeted by signs on every lamppost echoing Obi-Wan’s commands: “Go yard.” “Go yard.” “Go yard,” they all said. I pinched myself to see if this was all just a bad dream sequel, but when I turned the corner, it was clear this was all very real. At the first house I saw they were holding a yard sale. “Go yard” it said out front in bold letters. Well I’ll be. In all my years, I’ve never been to one. So that was what this was all about: me attending my first yard sale. How could I resist? I have to tell you, I was so impressed with what I saw, I bought that yard and took it straight home. Inspired, I went out to check out all the other such sales I had ignored throughout my life. I went to a patio sale and I picked up an adorable patio. I went to an attic sale and purchased a charming attic. I got a cosy basement

at the basement sale and the cutest little garage at the garage sale and then wrapped it all up with a brand new, unused sidewalk at the sidewalk sale. Talk about hitting a home run. I was towing it all in a big trailer when I drove by our neighbourhood’s favourite pessimist, Nigel Naysayer, who looked on in disbelief. “Patio? Attic? Basement? Garage? And sidewalk, too? Have you lost your marbles?” he snarled. “Where is all that stuff gonna go?” Suddenly, Obi-Wan appeared in a haze overhead and was about to answer him when I quickly stepped in. “Where do you think, Nigel,” I interrupted. “Yard, baby, yard. They’re all gonna go yard. The best yard ever, too. Mine.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Ford, Tory make better Dungeon 3 DAYS ONLY!! SAVE! Masters than transit planners OPEN TO THE PUBLIC CLEARANCE

CENTRES

I

never pegged Rob Ford and John Tory as the kind of kids who played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons in high school. Tory is bit too old and suave to have gotten into the über-nerdy 1980s roleplaying game, and the only set of polyhedron dice kids like the Ford brothers would have had was the one they’d swiped from the cowering members of the Scarlett Heights D&D Club. Still, as a recovering Dungeons-and-Dragons über-nerd myself, I’ve got to say: both Ford and Tory would have made wicked Dungeon Masters. Armed with nothing but graph paper, some pencils and their unbridled imagination, both have come up with wonderful, fanciful maps that’ll keep parties of dungeon-crawlers busy for months – or, if they’re elected, years. Of the two transit dungeons, Ford’s is undeni-

david nickle the city ably cooler. He’s drawn a veritable minotaur’s maze of subway lines on his $9-billion plan to drive Torontonians underground: tunnels under Finch and Sheppard Avenues in Etobicoke and Scarborough, a dank catacomb for the Eglinton Crosstown light rail line in Scarborough, and a downtown relief passageway beneath Leslieville and Corktown. Tory’s plan is not technically a transit dungeon – Smart Track is all above ground – but the serpentine rail line wending through Scarborough, downtown Toronto and, if you listen to Olivia Chow, some living rooms in Etobicoke, is certainly sitting on a dragon’shorde of gold. The trouble is that both

Tory and Ford’s transit plans are asking voters to roll dice on very real schemes; schemes that are going to cost real money and plough through real neighborhoods. Neither Tory nor Ford have provided much comfort in their financing plans – both relying on the unproven tax increment financing model to pay the very significant cost of those projects, and Ford floating a further range of financing mechanisms that a team of experts spent considerable energy definitively refuting during the Sheppard subway debate this past term. This kind of thing has always played much better over a long night in a suburban rec room than it does in the real world. Any über-nerd could tell you that.

T

he Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, one of the largest athletic facilities in the country, is opening its doors in Scarborough. The sports and community recreation venue, at 875 Morningside Ave., is jointly owned by the city and University of Toronto Scarborough. “There’s something for everybody here,” UTSC athletics director Scott McRoberts said during a media tour of the facility on Friday. McRoberts expects that 90 per cent of UTSC students will use the new centre. Last year, 85 per cent of students accessed the university’s old facility for at least one program. “On any given day we expect 1,000 to 1,500 students a day coming through here,” McRoberts said. “I hope in the next couple of years we’ll have the healthiest campus in Canada.” The centre features a 50-metre competition pool, a 50-metre training pool with moveable floors, a dive tank with nine diving boards, including a 10-metre platform, and a 40,000 square feet fieldhouse with four basketball courts. The aquatics area will have seating for 6,000 during next summer’s Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. “There’s nothing like it in Ontario,” McRoberts said. “The training pool alone has two moveable floors, so you can actually have three different types of programming going on, a mom and tots swim program with the floor raised, a learn to swim program for adults and students at another level and then you can have 25-metre lane swimming.” Pamela Ware, a diver who

hopes to qualify for the Pan Am Games, said she’s excited to train at the new facility. “I find it great that we’ll have another Olympic pool in Canada,” she said. “We never really had anything in Toronto.” The facility’s fitness centre features 200 pieces of equipment. “We have about nine different types of cardio equipment in here,” McRoberts said. “We’ve designed it so each one has its own TV, Internet access, is iPod compatible and there’s also a USB area for most of them, so students can plug in, have their study notes up on their screen and study while they’re exercising.” Beach volleyball player Grant O’Gorman, who placed second at the 2013 U21 World Championships, said athletes

from various sports would get a chance to socialize while training under one roof. “We could talk about our experiences playing or performing and the hardships of being an athlete,” he said. “The level of equipment...it’s just world class, it’s amazing. It’ll definitely make me a better athlete working at this facility.” The centre will be closed to the public for three months next summer for the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. The Pan Am Games take place July 10 to 26 while the Parapan Am Games run Aug. 7 to 15. For more information, visit Toronto2015.org.

Conservative MPs James and Chisu must speak out NOW to save door-to-door mail delivery!

People value door-to-door mail delivery. It is an important personal service. Endless trips to a “community” mail box would be a major added chore. This chore would be particularly difficult for seniors and for people with mobility issues, tight schedules and/or a home business.

borers reach Dufferin Street wTunnel Tunnel borer machines (TBMs) excavating the west underground portion of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT have nearly reached Dufferin Street. About 2.5 kilometres of tunnelling is complete since last spring, with both “Dennis” and “Lea” digging underneath Eglinton Avenue West. They are expected to reach Allen Road by December, according to Metrolinx. The two massive drilling machines have continued to carve out the Crosstown’s underground route, departing from Black Creek Drive last spring. Once the machines reach the Allen, they will be extracted and redeployed east to Yonge Street, said Metrolinx senior executive Jack Collins. A second set of TBMs will also tunnel from east of the Don Valley towards Yonge Street. All tunnelling is expected to be done by late 2016. The first phase of the Crosstown is scheduled to open in 2020.

Scarborough Theatre Guild chooses perfect show for a season opener maria tzavaras scm@insidetoronto.com When people are in relationships, sometimes they are so used to the dynamic they can’t see what others may see looking from the outside in. In Scarborough Theatre Guild’s first show of the season, Cactus Flower, a hilarious romantic comedy by Abe Burrows, we see a number of different relationships that all need a little tweaking and a lot of wake up calls. Set in 1965, the show opens with 21-year-old Toni (Charlotte Tavenor) trying to off herself by leaving the gas stove on. Her neighbour, Igor (Simon Joseph), smells the gas, turns it off and reminds Toni she should stick her head inside the oven to get the deed done. Sounds morbid, but this is the start of a series of silly and funny moments, as well as showing how eccentric, naive and selfish some of the characters are. Turns out Toni’s in love with an older, married man,

father of three and a successful dentist named Dr. Julian Winston (Harry Hochman), who stood her up on their anniversary. Toni tells Igor her story and how despite Julian being married loves him for his “honesty.” Igor doesn’t hide his dislike of Julian, but gets thrown in the middle because Toni, who sent a suicide note to his office, asks him to call to say she didn’t die after all. Later that morning, we meet Julian and his nurse/ secretary Stephanie (Silvina D’Alessandro) who is rigid but has a hilarious, whip-like tongue. After a few patients, Mrs. Dixon Durant (Reva Lawry) and Julian’s eccentric, actor and old fr iend Har vey (Tommy Boston), come and go, the truth is revealed that Julian is a serial bachelor who lied to Toni about being married to avoid anything serious. However, after he hears about the suicide attempt, decides he wants to marry her. Turns out Toni has a skewed

moral code as being a mistress is OK, but a home wrecker another, and she won’t say yes to Julian’s proposal until she meets his wife. This is where the hilarity, begins to unravel. As with most lies, they get bigger and

more complicated, so Julian enlists Harvey and Stephanie (who plays his “wife’) to help him convince Toni to marry him. From here, there isn’t a dull moment as this farce gets bigger and funnier. This talented cast of 10

are fantastic, and this one of those shows where everyone has a favourite character. They’re all funny but there are great comic relief characters like Senor Sanchez (Mike Palmieri) who has the best comedic timing, and Mrs.

Dixon as the patient who falls victim to bad dentistry due to all the drama. D’Alessandro as Stephanie has the best sarcastic oneliners and she delivers them with a sharp, funny humour, playing her role impeccably. Tavenor as Toni is likeable and sweet and completely believable in her role. Hochman is amazing and funny as the delightfully deceptive Julian, Joseph is fantastically talented in his role as Igor, and Boston as Harvey makes everyone laugh with his delivery and his comedic timing. This is the perfect show for a season opener. From the acting to the directing and the amazing versatile set, there’s nothing missing in this entertaining production. Cactus Flower runs Sept. 11 to 13 and Sept. 18 to 19 at 8 p.m. Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd. Tamil community walk set for Sunday Ali Raza araza@insidetoronto.com Scarborough’s Tamil community is joining together for the sixth annual Tamil Canadian Walk-a-thon on Sunday, Sept. 14 at Thomson Park. The walk, organized by the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC), is set to raise funds for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. With a fundraising goal of $50,000, the CTC invites everyone of all ages to participate. “Every seven minutes, someone in Canada dies of heart disease or stroke,” said David Poopalapillai, national spokesperson for the CTC. “South Asians in particular are at a higher risk, so we thought it’s important to bring awareness and contribute to the foundation.” In previous years, the walk raised funds for many Canadian charities and organizations like Canadian Cancer Society, Sick Kids Fo u n d a t i o n , A m n e s t y International, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

and the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. In five years, the walks have raised $250,000 in funds. The walk coincides with the Terry Fox Run in Scarborough. But CTC is confident that there won’t be any conflicting issues as the walk and run routes are different. T h e Ta m i l Ca n a d i a n Walk-a-thon follows a fivekilometre route starting from Thomson Park to north along Brimley Road, east on Ellesmere Avenue, south on McCowan Road and west on Lawrence Avenue back to the park. “It’s the same route every year,” said Nilani Logeswaran, media liaison for the CTC. “CTC found that holding the walk around this time was ideal; people are more engaged and the weather is great.” The CTC is a non-profit organization serving the needs of Tamil-Canadians. It expects the walk to be a “community engagement opportunity.” As the Tamil community in Scarborough

is growing in numbers, the CTC believes its community involvement is also growing. “Canada is a wonderful country,” said Poopalapillai. “We (Tamil-Canadians) have received so much from this country, now we want to give something back.” Poopalapillai said that social responsibility is an important, fundamental Canadian value and that Tamil-Canadians should do their part to be socially responsible. CTC anticipates the participation of a thousand Tamil-Canadians from Scarborough in the walk. The walk takes place at Thomson Park on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m and will feature speeches, food and activities for participants. One hundred per cent of proceeds will go to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Thomson Park is located at 1005 Brimley Rd. For more information, about this event at Thomson Park please visit www.tamilcanadianwalk.ca

Community Safety Week events set for Scarborough Ali Raza araza@insidetoronto.com New local residents doubtful of their safety in the community are invited to the second annual Scarborough Community Safety Week for the week of Sept. 22-26. Organized by the Toronto East Quadrant Local Immigration Partnership (TEQ LIP), the week will offer several events taking place across various locations in Scarborough. It will consist of a series of activities, workshops and sessions focused on safety topics. With local and regional partners, including Toronto Police 42 Division, TEQ LIP expects to raise awareness of many safety concerns met by newcomers to Scarborough. “We want to bring services together to help newcomers in their settlement process,” said Mani Mahadeva, Local

Immigration Partnership Officer with TEQ LIP. “We explore barriers in their settlement process. We found people coming from different communities or countries felt sometimes they don’t feel safe.” New residents to Scarborough raised concerns over their families’ safety. But other concerns involving road safety and how to avoid financial scams or fraud were also mentioned, Mahadeva said. concerns Safety Week will address those concerns with various seminars led by members of the Toronto Police. Traffic officers will help educate community residents with road safety tips and precautions, while school officers will aid in the youth safety sessions. “Newcomers are often

uncertain about the police,” said Const. Gary Gomez, Crime Prevention Officer at 42 Division and co-chair of the planning committee involved with the safety week. “Sometimes they come from countries that aren’t so ‘police-friendly.’ Our mission is to impress upon people that the police are friendly, approachable and that we’re a big part of keeping safe.” Events will run all week starting with an opening celebration and a road safety session at McGregor Park Community Centre on Monday at noon. More events running throughout the week include educational workshops, information sessions, and community discussions. The safety week ends in a closing celebration with a community safety session at the Scarborough Civic Centre on Friday at 11 a.m.

Public board seeks share of development charges CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com With the city’s recent approval of 7,000 new condominium units across Toronto, two Toronto District School Board (TDSB) trustees are asking for their share of Education Development Charges (EDC) that could add up to millions of dollars. Chris Glover, Etobicoke Centre trustee, held a press conference this past week alongside Mari Rutka, TDSB board chair and Willowdale trustee, asking the province to change the regulations to Education Development Charges. The levies charged from the new condo developments last week will generate $5.9 million for the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), Glover said. “The public school board is not getting any of that,” added

Glover, explaining because the TDSB has land, it is not allowed to collect the charges, which can only currently be used for the purchase and upgrading of land. School boards must meet several conditions to be eligible to collect EDC, which include that the board must show the number of students it needs to accommodate is larger than the space available. While the TCDSB is at capacity, the TDSB, which serves more than double the number of students, is not considered eligible since it still has space across the system. “For a city this size, it’s never going to happen,” Rutka said. She added under the current funding formula, all the schools need to be completely full before the province provides capital funding.

“We sort of get doubly dinged,” Rutka said. “We don’t get money from the province and we don’t get money from the developers.” The TDSB previously sent an open letter to provincial party leaders earlier this year, asking for changes to the Education Act so the public school board can begin to collect Education Development Charges to be used for renovations and additions as well as new school construction. In Rutka’s high-growth riding of Willowdale where condos are being built along the Yonge Street corridor between Finch and Sheppard avenues, local schools like Avondale Public School are already above capacity with nine portables on the playing field.

RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Toronto is falling behind when it comes to serving the growing needs of its ridership, a report comparing the recent transit histories of major Canadian cities warns. Fast Cities, authored by Cherise Burda and Geoffrey Singer, was released this month by environmental thinktank the Pembina Institute. It ranks how well five cities, Calgary, Montreal, O t t a w a , To r o n t o a n d Vancouver, have fared over the last 10 to 20 years when it comes to building rapid transit, such as subways, light rail and streetcars which travel in dedicated lane. In the case of Toronto, the results are a mixed bag. “Toronto has the most rapid transit in place, has benefited from early investments last century and it’s really built a culture of transit riders,” said Burda this week, “But over the last 10 to 20 years, the other cities are

starting to catch up.” According to the study Toronto has the furthest reach for its existing rapid transit network, 83 kilometres, which is comfortably ahead of both Montreal and Vancouver, which have built 69 and 68 kilometres of track to date respectively. Toronto also has by-far the highest ridership in the county, with an average of 133 rapid transit trips per capita, well ahead of second-place Ottawa. But while other cities have continued to build upon their networks - Calgary for example leads when it comes to the most amount of track built in the past decade - Toronto’s progress has stalled, ranking second-last, only ahead of Montreal, having added just 25 kilometres of rapid transit over the last 20 years. While Toronto is building new connections - the Spadina subway extension, Eglinton Crosstown LRT are both under construction - it’s not keeping pace with growing ridership demands.

Burda, who is director of Pembina’s Ontario operations, placed blame for the lack of movement on never-ending political battles over transit, which have resulted in the delaying of transit expansion, as well as an emphasis on building subways which are more expensive than light rail and take longer to build. But she stopped short of blaming the city’s subway fixation as the reason for the decline in rapid transit building. “The report doesn’t get into the details of why this is happening,” she said. “What we’re showing is Toronto has not been building or opening much in the last 20 years.” Despite having released the report right when the municipal election campaign has begun to heating up, Burda said the report was not intended to influence the race and was actually delayed by a few months.

Chow campaign sees support falling in Scarborough DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

mayor Rob Ford city-wide, with 41 per cent of voters supporting him to Ford’s 30 per cent. Chow has only 24 per cent support in her bid for mayor city-wide. In Scarborough—which has become a mayoral battleground thanks to the Scarborough subway plan— it has become a tight race between Ford and Tory, with Tory having support of 43 per

Olivia Chow’s support in Scarborough has fallen to just 11 per cent in Scarborough according to a Forum Research poll released Wednesday. The poll, conducted Monday night, put mayoral candidate John Tory in a comfortable 11 point lead over

cent of voters and Ford having 41 per cent. Ford and Tory both support continuing to build the Scarborough subway using in part a special tax levy to raise about $1 billion. Chow has campaigned on cancelling the subway plan and reverting to the old provincially-funded light rail line to extend the Bloor-Danforth line.

The poll indicated that building transit has indeed become the predominant issue for voters in the race, with 37 per cent indicating that to be so. That’s followed by keeping taxes low (17 per cent) and rebuilding Toronto’s image (11 per cent). Ironically, support for David Soknacki also appeared to be growing—he rated 58

per cent, with 50-50 approval in Scarborough—just the day before he made the decision to pull the plug on his campaign. Forum research president Lorne Bozinoff said that the poll indicates a solidification of support for front-runner John Tory, who has led several polls coming out of the summer. “John Tory is clearly solid-

fying his lead as the campaign rolls into its final month, and he now leads in the attribute of handling the city budget best, which always used to be Rob Ford’s strength,” said Forum president Lorne Bozinoff. “This may be an indication that voters are finally paying attention to the ‘Ford Math,’ which rarely adds up according to the experts.”

Soknacki withdraws from mayor’s race DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com David Soknacki has left the mayoral race. The former Scarborough councillor and budget chief made the announcement the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 9, after speaking with supporters. Consistently polling in the single digits, Soknacki said in his statement that he simply hadn’t the support or momentum to continue. ‘idea-driven’ “Ours has been one of the most positive, the most ideadriven and the most idealistic Toronto mayoral campaigns in recent memory,” wrote Soknacki. “However, today, I received confirmation of what I sus-

pected for days: while my support is growing, it simply is not growing quickly enough to make any positive difference to the outcome on Election Day, especially given the challenges I’ve faced as a candidate.” campaign platform Soknacki made the announcement hours after the release of his full campaign platform – a release that was eclipsed by a visit by boxer Mike Tyson to Mayor Rob Ford. Soknacki campaigned in opposition to Ford’s policies, deliberately shying away from his substance abuse and other personal matters. Among other things, Soknacki supported scrapping the Scarborough subway in favour of light rail, digging

CLEAROUT

deep into the police budget and offering free TTC rides for early-bird commuters to help ease congestion. ‘top priority’ “While we fought this as a campaign of ideas, we’ve also heard from voters who’ve told us that removing Mayor Ford is their top priority,” said Soknacki in his statement. Soknacki’s departure came the same day mayoral candidate Sarah Thompson switched to run for council in Ward 20. Now, the three significant mayoral candidates in the election Oct. 27 are John Tory, Olivia Chow and Rob Ford.

Sarah Thomson bows out of mayor’s race, registers for Ward 20 MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Sarah Thomson, whose second run to be mayor of Toronto ended Tuesday, Sept. 9, says media in the city were against her candidacy from the beginning. “We could not get press. We were trying and trying,” said the magazine publisher, who registered as a candidate for councillor instead in TrinitySpadina Ward 20. Last month, Thomson asked supporters through a website poll if she should switch her goal to a council seat, and 88 per cent approved, saying, “run for council, you can make a difference there,” she said in an interview after making the change. As a councillor in the downtown constituency Adam Vaughan left after winning a recent federal byelection, Thomson said, she could fight for the ideas

As for her supporters outside Ward 20, where she was one of 28 candidates registered on Tuesday, Thomson said they should think about “who would make a good mayor and how to get them in.” She said she would support whoever has the best chance to defeat Ford, and call on any candidate running third behind Ford to transfer their support to a candidate running second behind the mayor. Thomson, however, did not take the opportunity to endorse John Tory, the current frontrunner, whose two sons supported the later stages of her 2010 campaign, George Tory as her manager and John Tory Jr. as a strategist “Anything can happen in six weeks,” she said. At city hall on Tuesday, Ford shrugged off Thomson’s plan to support his most-likely opponent, saying he wished her “all the best.”

she championed as a mayoral candidate, among them securing additional dedicated funding for public transit and imposing road tolls on outsiders using Toronto roads. “People didn’t want that to disappear,” she said. As a mayoral candidate in 2010, Thomson dropped out of the race too late to have her name removed from the ballot, but asked supporters to back George Smitherman in an effort to prevent a Rob Ford victory. She said her second experience running for mayor was different. Editorials – after she appeared at a campaignlaunching event in March in a horse and carriage - “were all about my hair and how I look,” said Thomson, who has been sporting dreadlocks. “There was bias from the very beginning,” she charged, arguing political reporters tried to choose a candidate they believed could successfully challenge Ford.
