The councillors are under pressure from families who say they don’t have enough parking because adult children live at home. But at Scarborough Community Council this week,

most refused to allow apron parking, as an experiment on a single street, in places where it might be safe. “It’s going to put us in an impossible position,” said >>>councillors, page 8

Candidates discuss refugee issues at forum MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Candidates for major parties in Toronto promised to bring more Syrian refugees to Canada, as a disintegrating region of the world draws more attention in the federal election campaign. After four years of civil war in Syria and related insurgencies, Canadians are paying more attention, in part, “thanks to that ghastly photo that everybody knows today,” John McCallum, Liberal immigration critic, said after a meeting Sept. 10 with refugees and their advocates in Scarborough. He was talking about an image of the small, lifeless body of Alan Kurdi on a Turkish beach. McCallum, running for re-election in MarkhamUnionville, said the party is pledging to settle 25,000 refugees in Canada, including 10,000 by the end of the year. “That’s a beginning – it could go up,” he added, saying the issue will treated as nonpartisan, so long as Prime Minister Stephen Harper – who has signalled some new Conservative commitment is coming – acts fast to at least match the Liberal pledge. “Take charge, and treat it like an emergency,” McCallum

Photo/MIKE ADLER

Liberal candidates Gary Anandasangaree (ScarboroughRouge Park), Arif Virani (Parkdale-High Park) and John McCallum (Markham-Unionville) and Dr. Jane Philpott (Markham-Stouffville) were among those who attended a forum with refugees and agency representatives at the Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care in Scarborough.

said at the Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care, a volunteer clinic treating patients without insurance. With McCallum were three Liberal candidates who came to Canada as refugees – Arif Virani (Parkdale-High Park), Ahmed Hussen (York South-Weston) and Gary Anandasangaree (Scarborough-Rouge Park). Anandasangaree said his family, after anti-Tamil riots in Sri Lanka, was let into Canada through special measures, as were Hungarians, East Indian Ugandans and others. “When things have been tough, Canada has stepped up and

opened its doors.” McCallum did criticize Harper’s Conservative government for requiring, since 2012, that refugees be first cleared by the United Nations and for cuts to refugee claimant health coverage he said were “unconscionable morally” and “economically stupid.” Arnold Chan, the Liberal incumbent in ScarboroughAgincourt, said the refugee issue is a test for Canada. “Are we a welcoming country or are we one that is suspicious and fearful?” Some may think a pledge of 25,000 “is still a tepid response,

but let us at least begin,” he added. Earlier, Chuck Konkel, a Conservative running in Scarborough-Guildwood, said he suspects Canada should be bringing in more people from the war-torn region, but cannot discount the possibility some refugees are “bogus.” “I think you have to be cautious, but you also have to be caring,” he said. Konkel came to Canada as a refugee because after the Second World War, his father, a Pole, was stateless. Adapting to a different culture is “like being plopped on the planet Mars,” and much is involved in the resettlement process, including some things compassionate Canadians will have to provide themselves, he said. “You want housing, clothing, psychological counselling, OHIP cards, school things, friends, interpreters,” Konkel said. “At the end of day, it’s the community they’ll be coming to, not a government office.” Konkel said he’s part of a group of volunteers sponsoring three refugee families now in Turkey. The families are Yazidis and Mendeans, members of small religious sects he considers forgotten during the current focus on Syria. “Eight months, we’re looking at,” he said, when asked how long the families will wait

before coming to Canada. As a Hong Kong police inspector, Konkel visited camps for Boat People who fled Vietnam in the 1970s. Tens of thousands were admitted to Canada, but Konkel said those refugees weren’t fleeing a war, and the sponsorship process was less complex then. People comparing Canada’s response at the time are “romanticizing the era,” he said. “We brought in 20,000 Syrians so far, and we’ll bring in more. We have not had a lot of community sponsorship.” But in another interview Thursday, Rathika Sitsabaiesan, a New Democrat running in Scarborough North, said the Conservatives have only brought over 2,000 government-sponsored Syrian refugees; it is deliberately including privately sponsored refugees and refugees from Iraq in the 20,000 figure, “so it’s quite shameful,” she said. Canada, which has had periods of light and darkness when it comes to welcoming refugees, cannot continue to be laggards in the current crisis, Sitsabaiesan said. “I don’t want this to be another black mark in our history.”

Police seek witnesses in stabbing death of man on Lawrence ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

Police are appealing for witnesses to a weekend stabbing in Scarborough that took the life of Bevis Larmond. A police officer on patrol found the 56-year-old suffering from a stab wound on the sidewalk near 4060 Lawrence Ave. E., near Galloway Road, around 3:20 p.m. Saturday,

Sept. 12. He was taken to hospital where he died. An autopsy determined he died as a result of being stabbed with a sharp-edged weapon. Det. Sgt. Terry Browne said Larmond lived in the Lawrence and Galloway area and was home earlier on Saturday. “He was definitely socializing with some friends, and he’d indicated he was just

going to leave for a little while and would be back,” Browne said. “So there’s the milliondollar question: Where was he going to and what happened to him in that very short time frame?” Larmond left on bike; his bicycle was located close to where he was found. “We’re still appealing to people that were in the area at that time,” Browne said,

Bevis Larmond

adding he’s “quite confident” that someone saw Larmond, who had a greyish beard and long

dreads. “He’s been a fixture in the area for quite some time now,”

Browne said of the victim. Police don’t believe the murder was drug-related or gang-related. Larmond had previous contact with police, but that contact is dated and insignificant, Browne said. Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide squad at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

Malvern Votes Town Hall set for tonight Many people in the Malvern area don’t vote, and a resident group is asking them to learn why they should. Malvern Votes hosts a Town Hall on federal election issues tonight from 6 to 9 p.m., 90 Littles Rd., asking people to share their thoughts on which ones are important to them. In past votes, Toronto’s Ward 42, which contains the northeast Scarborough neighbourhood, has had some of the lowest turnouts in the city, according to the group, which wants to get more residents involved. Redistribution has split Malvern into two federal ridings, Scarborough North and Scarborough-Rouge River. Malvern Votes is also organizing all-candidates debates for both next month. The Scarborough North debate is from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Malvern Community Re c re a t i o n C e n t re o n Sewells Road. A debate for Scarborough-Rouge Park is at the Malvern Family Resource Centre on Littles Road from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 8. For details, contact Juneeja at jvarghese@mfrc.org or 416284-4184, ext. 221. Conservative candidate named wNew

The Conservative Party has named a new candidate for Scarborough-Rouge Park after the exit of Jerry Bance. Leslyn Lewis is the new candidate, a lawyer in Scarborough and host of a television show Law Matters with Leslyn Lewis. Bance, who also ran for the Conservatives in 2006 and 2008, was recently dropped as a candidate after CBC identified him as a man caught urinating into a coffee cup in hidden-camera footage for its show Marketplace in 2012.

Mark 35 years of the Terry Fox Run by taking part locally W hen Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980, there was little fanfare and not much attention to what he was trying to do to raise money for cancer research. But as the 21-year-old Fox ran close to 42 kilometres a day despite having his leg amputated due to bone cancer, Fox’s persistence and dedication inspired more and more Canadians as the word got out about what he was doing. Now 35 years later, it’s become our view much easier to spread the word through the Internet and various Lace up and social media channels about all upcoming local run events be a part of the happening across Toronto. the challenge Just search “Terry Fox Run” and the name of your community. It won’t be difficult to find out where a local run is taking place near you. The challenge today is to not just passively retweet or ‘like’ an event, but to be one of the millions of active participants around the world who take the next step to do their part to raise funds for a cause that is still relevant to this day. While more than $650 million has been raised to date worldwide in Terry’s name, the search for a cancer cure continues. For anyone who has yet to experience a community-bonding event like the Terry Fox Run, this 35th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope is a great way to get involved. Or by the same technological means used to communicate with others about the run, it’s easier to make a personal donation, which can be done online at www.terryfox.org Fox didn’t intend his run to just have people cheer for him on the sidelines, but rather to join him in something greater than himself. “It took cancer to realize that being self-centered is not the way to live. The answer is to try and help others,” said Fox during his marathon. “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.”

t’s hard to believe this is already the 40th edition of TIFF. Time sure flies by when you’re star-gazing. The media highlight of the festival featured the candid superstar, who was out one night with his posse and was overheard venting to the piano player at the bar at the Windsor Arms Hotel. Whined the disgruntled Moby, “I’m sick and tired

Olympic decision shows civic prudence The roof of the burger joint at Nathan Phillips Square turns out to be a pretty good place to hold a press conference. If the weather’s right, it affords a view of Toronto City Hall that is quite inspiring – the sort of sight that underscores bold visions of civic greatness. On Tuesday morning, Mayor John Tory used the spot for a press conference for a rather different kind of announcement: one of sensible aspirations for civic prudence. It was a good fit. We are not, Tory told Toronto, going to make a play for the 2024 Summer Games. Timelines are short, competition is stiff, and there are better things with which to occupy our time than jockeying for the right to foot the bill for a massive international Olympic event. This was something of a shift from the signals Tory had been sending out in the early days of September, meeting privately with leaders in business and politics and sports, councillors and community

david nickle the city representatives, speaking with nothing but optimism when cornered by cameras and reporters. Tory’s reversal based on precedent was nothing short of seismic. Earlier in the summer I based a rather inaccurate prediction on this matter on exactly that precedent: that when faced with an opportunity to lead with its jaw in a fight outside its weight class, Toronto’s political leadership cannot resist. I am quite happy to see that my rather cynical assessment was incorrect. Tory seems happy too, based on his answer to a reporter’s question: “I am really happy with the fact that I am now going to devote myself to traffic and transportation, affordable housing, to making sure that we can provide opportunity for people who are on the outside looking in, to getting on with other governments

Prepare to be safe. In the highly unlikely event of a nuclear accident, a potassium iodide (KI) pill is a key component to keeping you and your family safe. There’s no such thing as being too prepared. For more information visit www.preparetobesafe.ca

and getting them to make the investments that should be made,” he said. “We do have real problems for the people who live here today.” If it’s possible to put an even brighter face on Tuesday’s announcement, consider this: for the first time since the election, Tory and former mayor and Ward 2 Councillor Rob Ford have found themselves in agreement. Doubtless this is not Ford’s doing: he clearly misread Tory’s earlier signals as badly as I did, and took a consistently contrarian view with a slightly less sunny argument: hosting the Games is too expensive and we ought not try. On this, Tory and Ford seem to differ. At some point, Tory said, Toronto might bid for an Olympic Summer Games, or something else. In the meantime, Toronto should get to work on its tangible future and demand to be treated as something more than a good place to throw a party.

Kelly moved to defer the issue until Scarborough’s community council meets next April, and his motion passed, five to four. In contrast to other parts of Toronto, Scarborough councillors will not consider requests for street parking permits even if most residents of a street say they want them. Scarborough-Rouge River Councillor Raymond Cho said the area’s population is growing and there’s not enough overnight parking. “We just stick to the old policy” instead of being flexible, he told Tuesday’s meeting.

The Hearing Clinic to host open house The Hearing Clinic will be hosting an open house September 22, 23 and 24 at the 2636 Eglinton Ave. E. location and everyone is welcome. The event is scheduled to help those with hearing loss who aren’t completely satisfied with their current hearing aids and community members with new hearing concerns. Checkups will be done during the open house and an experienced repair technician will be on site for minor fixes. The open house will be on an appointment basis, but even those who want a quick checkup and more information about hearing loss are welcome to call in. Though it’s hard to believe the checkups and repairs are free of charge, The Hearing Clinic is known for providing many services without adding extra fees. They put their clients’ needs first and it’s no wonder they’ve won the gold Readers’ Choice Award for more than 10 years. The team is looking to help as many people in the community as they can. They’ve seen many clients who weren’t satisfied with the care they received elsewhere. Some had even been told they were past the point of help, but The Hearing Clinic has the skills and experience to help just about anyone. Terry Lewis, doctor of audiology, says hearing loss isn’t always preventable, but a checkup is recommended at the first signs of hearing trouble. These include a loss of clarity and difficulty

Winter’s on its way.

Life As We Know It at library TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com

A Toronto artist is poking fun at modern culture with a series of short films showing in Scarborough Monday. Cameron Tingley, a filmmaker and self-described visual humourist, brings his “Life As We Know It” show to Agincourt Public Library, 155 Bonis Ave., from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Seven live-action shorts will be screened at the free event. Tingley, an East York resident, made the movies with Toronto theatrical troupe The Flying Spot Players. “They’re kind of like liveaction editorial cartoons,” said Tingley. “The films are about our culture – our culture in the modern world, and how we relate to the culture, and how our culture impacts the environment, and how it impacts each other.” Using humour, the shorts encourage people to take a step back from the busyness of day-to-day life, and think about human behaviour. “We get a chance to see our-

selves, our collective selves, in a different light,” explained Tingley. “And hopefully from that, my objective, hopefully is to get people thinking more about their impact on the environment, our impact on our culture, and our impact on each other, to try to make it a better world.” The movies, filmed in Toronto, also explore media influence and awareness, modern manners and communication, and popular and

consumer culture. Between each film, Tingley speaks with the audience about the pieces. “It’s one of my favourite parts of the presentation,” he said of the discussions. “Sometimes people think differently than what I think. I introduce the presentation by saying, ‘You’re going to see what the world looks like through my eyes, when you look on the screen.’ And sometimes people have different ways of looking at it, which I think is great, because there’s many different ways of looking at issues.” In the films, Tingley exaggerates normal, everyday situations to highlight bigger issues in society. He said the shorts are silly, colourful and lively. “They’re just a lot of fun to watch,” he added. “In the end, there’s a good feeling in the room, because people have had a chuckle over some things, but they’ve also had a chance to maybe see things that they could do slightly different in their lives, to be part of a healthier society.”

Wexford Soccer Club adds toddler program This year, the Wexford Soccer Club has added a new team for children under three years of age. The team is coed and helps children get an early start to learning soccer basics and making exercise a regular part of their routine. The new age group is being added to the long list of teams that go up to 17 years of age, plus one fall/winter league for women over 17. The club includes competitive teams, which have traveled as far as England and cities in North America, and house leagues, which compete at home against each other. The group has teams that play throughout the year - indoor and outdoor, depending on the season. Many young hockey players join the outdoor soccer teams during the summer to keep themselves in top shape while other athletes play year round. Some former Wexford Soccer Club athletes have gone on to lead careers in sports, including Toronto Maple Leafs Peter Zezel and Gary Leeman, and coaches from the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals. The Wexford Hi-Profile Over 35 Men’s team just won the Masters Provincial Championship and will now represent Ontario at the Nationals in Halifax over Thanksgiving weekend. Many of the team members started their soccer careers with the Wexford Soccer Club years ago. With a long history, there are many Wexford Soccer Club alumni. The group was informally

Girls now make up about 30 per cent of the athletes. From the very start, all children had equal playing time, no matter their skill level. The club makes sure coaches follow that to this day. The house league coaches are volunteer parents who often stick with the same groups of children for years as their own child continues to move up. Throughout September and October, coaches will be searching for skilled players and athletes with potential to try out for the competitive teams. There will also be indoor house league inperson registration on most Saturdays throughout the two months at Golden Mile Mall. Bloor Street could be getting its first set of bike lanes in 2016. In a city staff report to be debated at next week’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee (PWIC) meeting, a pilot project on Bloor, between Shaw Street and Avenue Road, is recommended as part of next year’s plan to install 41 kilometres of new bike lanes citywide. The recommendations must be approved by PWIC and then city council as a whole. The report also recommends boosting next year’s budget for bike lane installations by approximately $4-million to $13.6-million, coming from the city’s transportation services department. TTC EYES ANOTHER HIKE FOR 2016 wFARE

The TTC is looking at a $95-million shortfall for next year, and this week the transit commission’s budget committee recommended boosting the city subsidy or imposing a fare hike for 2016

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT to make up the difference. The shortfall is near equal to the cost of boosting TTC service back to its pre-2012 levels, which was announced with great fanfare by Mayor John Tory and TTC chair Josh Colle in early 2015. Those improvements include offering more frequent service on many bus and streetcar routes, the first of which were rolled out this month. AWARDS FILMMAKERS AT GALA wTUFF

The Toronto Urban Film Festival ( TUFF) will hold its closing-day awards gala Sunday. At the same time as the headline-grabbing Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) runs above ground, the often overlooked TUFF screens short, silent films from across the world in the subway system. Throughout its existence TUFF has awarded tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to the year’s top cinematic

entries, as chosen by a handpicked prominent Canadian filmmaker. But with funding in doubt for next year, this could be the last hurrah for TUFF, which has run annually since 2006. Visit www.torontourbanfilmfestival.com to stay open during nUIT BLANCHE wttc

The city’s 24-hour art crawl Nuit Blanche is coming, and for the first time the TTC is promising to have the subway network open all night. In previous years, only portions of the Yonge-UniversitySpadina and Bloor-Danforth line have remained open, requiring suburban transit riders to rely on shuttle buses to get home after 2 a.m. This year, both Line 1, from Finch to Downsview, and Line 2, from Kennedy to Kipling, will remain in operation until Nuit Blanche concludes. Nuit Blanche takes place starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 until 7 a.m. the following morning. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. His column runs every Thursday. Scarborough student Shen serves as Page at Queen’s Park Scarborough Grade 7 student Philip Shen recently wrapped up a stint as a Legislative Page at Queen’s Park. He followed in his older sister Helen’s footsteps who almost seven years ago also served as a Page in the Ontario Legislature. During their term, the students serve as a messenger on the floor of the Legislative Chamber, meet key parliamentary figures and learn about Ontario’s system of government. Seeing how inspiring and rewarding the Page program was for his sister, Philip was

excited to continue the new family tradition of serving as a Page at Queen’s Park. Family tradition

“I remember when I was 6 and going to see my sister and all her Page friends at Queen’s Park,” said Philip. “I’ve wanted to be a Page since then.” A student in extended French at Sir Alexander Mackenzie Senior Public School, Philip is also an athlete, school leader and actor. His older sister Helen was selected as a page in the Chiren’s Private fall of 2008. “It truly was a unique Home Childcare experience and I made many lifelong friends ✔ Space Available from all over the prov✔ Registered ECE Providing ince,” said Helen, who a Safe, Clean and Loving attended the orientaHomelike Atmosphere tion session with her ✔ Lots of fun and educational brother. Soccer season a blast for Wexford The Wexford Blast boys U13 rep team earned the championship of their top Toronto Soccer Association tier 1A division with an undefeated record of 12 wins and two ties. Showcasing Scarborough’s depth in the sport, the second place team was also from Scarborough – the West Rouge Storm with a record of 10 wins, three ties and one loss. The Wexford Blast closed out the season Sept. 8 at Major Abbas Ali Park in Scarborough

with a 7-0 win over Leaside after clinching the division on Sept. 2, 6-0 over the host Weston Wolves. Earlier in August, Wexford, the top team in the east, earned a close 1-0 win over the York Jets, the top team from the west. Wexford will now gear up for another tournament closer to home in the Woodbridge Challenge Cup Sept. 26 and 27 at Vaughan Grove Sports Park.

Massey Project hosts hikes through woods wTaylor

Part of the Don River runs through Scarborough, and a volunteer group believes it can help the authorities take better care of it. Though far from pristine, Taylor Massey Creek is a Don tributary flowing from just south of Hwy. 401, east of Victoria Park Avenue. On Saturday, Sept. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 11, members of the Taylor Massey Project will lead hikes through Warden Woods to build more interest in the creek and how the City of Toronto’s Ravine Strategy can help with its revival. Both hikes start at 10 a.m. at the corner of Warden and St. Clair avenues, rain or shine.

Toronto Zoo visitors and supporters are being asked to sign a flag, and to change their lives at the same time. The zoo, in order to highlight its conservation work, has teamed up with Earth Day Canada, an environmental group trying to get one million signatures on a flag going to Paris, France in December for the 2015 Paris Climate Conference. As they sign a flag that will be inside the zoo’s front entrance until Oct. 22, visitors will take a pledge “to make Earth Day every day and reduce my carbon footprint.” Ways to fulfill that pledge include cutting back the climate-altering carbon dioxide we produce through car travel, air travel, and heating our homes. Visit www.torontozoo.com/conservation to sign the flag online.

Building on Midland Avenue, just north of Sheppard Avenue. For details, call the church office at 416-293-4424.

Softron Tax saves you money Softron Tax is looking to save you money and give you the opportunity to land a new, rewarding career. The popular tax preparation firm is offering courses to teach students how to minimize the money going to the “tax man” and maximize tax returns. It’s an opportunity to not only increase students’ savings, but also boost the chances of getting a job. Graduates of the program may be offered a career with Softron Tax - a company where employees normally stay around 20 years. Classes are available in person at one of the 35 locations across Ontario or online. Each course takes seven weeks or 50 hours and is taught by certified professional accountants with years of experience. Students receive hands-on training and experience instead of just focusing on theoretics, like in university courses. Online courses cover all of the same content as in person sessions, but students are able to complete the work when their schedules allow. The website is interactive and students are able to use iPads, desktops and even smart phones to sign in. The courses are geared towards Canadians, but anyone around the world is welcome to register online. Many foreign students take the course before moving to Canada, so they’re prepared to find a job when they arrive. All gradu-

MAY THE sacred heart of Jesus be praised, loved, adored and glorified now and forever. Amen. ojw HOLY SPIRIT, Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who will give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory, Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favour has been granted. M.L.
