Golden girl Spooner to be celebrated at pair of local events Scarborough’s golden girl, women’s hockey player Natalie Spooner, will be celebrated at a pair of local events planned for this weekend and next. Spooner plays forward with the Canadian women’s hockey

After 25 years and eight terms in office, Toronto’s longest-serving MP has resigned to run for a seat on city council. Jim Karygiannis announced Tuesday afternoon he would register as a candidate the following morning in Ward 39, an area that makes up half his Scarborough-Agincourt riding. The ward’s present councillor, Mike Del Grande, has announced he won’t run again. Still, it was a surprising move for Karygiannis, who seemed more than most MPs to relish his role as parliamentarian, jetting to Canadian cities and countries around the world, often acting as an advocate for people far outside his riding. MPP questions leadership at The Scarborough Hospital Local meeting held in wake of merger plans for Scarborough’s hospitals being put on hold MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The Scarborough Hospital deserves some of the blame for its own aging and overcrowded facilities, Scarborough MPPs have told local politicians and other hospital supporters Monday. A group called Friends of The Scarborough Hospital called a meeting March 31 hoping to hear next steps after a merger between TSH and the Rouge Valley Health System came apart, hospital officials revealed the previ-
ous Wednesday, because the province refused to meet “minimum thresholds” of support. For many involved, a strong motivation behind the merger was its power to help persuade Ontario’s health ministry to at least study a complete renovation or replacement of the three Scarborough hospital campuses. Built in 1957, operating rooms at the TSH General are half the size of what the nearby Markham Stouffville Hospital has, and their lack of proper equipment makes
it harder for the hospital to attract and keep talented surgeons, said Dr. Larissa Tam, an obstetrician. “Our operating rooms are way below everything I’ve ever seen,” Tam told the town hall meeting at St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre. Scarborough-Agincourt MPP Soo Wong didn’t disagree, but said she hasn’t seen a formal request for capital funds from the hospital since she was elected in 2011. leadership was responsible for lack of action on new operating rooms – a project the ministry hasn’t begun despite earmarking $3 million in 2009 to start work – and other building deficiencies. “To date, there hasn’t been much leadership at Scarborough hospital. Let’s call it the way it is,” said Wong. Both said they had talked to Dr. John Wright, the previous CEO at TSH, about the operating rooms, but said Wright had not followed up by submitting an official request to move things forward. They added the project, along with another to plan a remake of a diagnostics wing at the General, was on hold for a year during the merger study with RVHS, during a previous study of a merger with Toronto East General Hospital, and in years before Wright’s tenure as CEO, when TSH was under provincial supervision. While almost 43 per cent of the General is over 50 years old, and its “patchwork renovations” have left a building below modern standards, the Birchmount campus, only 30 years old, ranks in the province’s worst 10 per cent of facilities, said Robert Biron, TSH CEO for the past year, “The skeleton, if you will, is falling apart,” he said, adding emergency rooms at both campuses, as well as at RVHS Centenary, are “grossly undersized” for the volumes they serve. Though Biron accepted his hospital “owns some” responsibility for its condition, he added it’s more important to move forward with a plan for renewal than to point fingers. The message from the Liberal MPPs, however, didn’t sit well with many.

Dr. Paul Tam said for years he was told TSH was at a disadvantage because resources were going to teaching hospitals in downtown Toronto or to growing suburbs around the city. “We took what is given. We don’t know how to fight for it,” he concluded. “We’ve been taken for granted and not had our fair share,” added Mike Del Grande, a local councillor and former TSH board member. “This is the silent buzz that I’m hearing.” Denis Lanoue, outgoing president of the hospital’s advisory council, went further, recalling the frustration he saw in TSH board members on March 15 as they voted to derail the merger – which he said residents, doctors and nurses alike supported after months of consultations. Both hospitals approved
the merger last November on condition Health Minister Deb Matthews would fund one-time and ongoing merger costs, as well as initiate longterm planning that could lead to facility renewal. The hospitals told the province they wanted no less than $18 million in capital planning grants – enough to construct a business case for new facilities – and $5.4 million annually to pay for wage harmonization between the hospitals. Matthews would not offer more than $3 million for planning, on top of $1.3 million the province had supplied for the merger study and $2.5 million for months of “due diligence” work after November. Will Earth Hour spawn similar hour events? First off, I realize not everybody was able to participate in Earth Hour Saturday night. If you were operating a truck, cab, limo or car at the time, you’d have had to take a pass. Turning off your headlights while driving in the dark is a definite no-no. You couldn’t have joined in if you were staging an indoor event, such as a hockey game, either. Contact sports by candlelight is not recommended. For those who were able to partake, according to reports, the cumulative effect radiated throughout the globe, leaving the planet and its inhabitants with a warm and fuzzy feeling. Ironically, turning all my light bulbs off in concert with so many others around the world, actually turned on one light bulb in my home: the one inside my head. It occurred to me that if the idea of increasing environmental awareness could generate so much interest globally, why not
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY use the same one-hour concept to address other issues that concern us all? It doesn’t have to be on Saturday night from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. It could be a different hour depending on the topic. What’s more, with all that’s going on these days, we could easily have 51 of them a year on top of Earth Hour. Imagine the cumulative effect of 52 such hours annually when we’re all on the same page globally. The planet has got to love that kind of math. Here are a few suggestions for topics I think could go a long way to making the world a better place. For starters, how about no acronyms for an hour a year? You have to replace them with full-length words. Ask grandma or grandpa to tell you about them. Words were all the rage back in the day. They were used in
equally antiquated structures known as sentences. Speaking of words, two the world could do without would be “no problem.” Let’s make that next on the list shall we? Even if it’s only for an hour a year, not hearing that phrase would do wonders for the globe. Staying with the subject of eradicating noise pollution, how about for an hour a year nobody with earphones can sing their favourite song out of key and with the wrong lyrics at the top of their lungs in a crowded subway? That could be followed by an hour the ensuing week of no screaming louder than the lead singer of a heavy metal band on your cellphone in a crowded mall. We could also address aggravating signage in the landscape in the same format. How about an hour a year when food prices on store and restaurant posters don’t end in .99? Instead we see the actual final total including the HST.
And let’s not forget the workplace. How about an hour a year when nobody in the office can ask you if you have any Tylenol? Anyhow, these are just a few ideas. I bet you could come up with 51 of your own that would be just as beneficial. But I’ll leave you with three more annual hours the world could use right now: no tweeting, no texting and no selfies. I know you’re thinking that’s an excessive length of time to expect people to curtail such essential behaviour. So, how does this sound? One minute for no tweeting, one minute no texting and one second for no selfies. That better? Safety at city hall: the three-sided story

s I write this the morning of April 1, reporters and cameras are camped outside the mayor’s office, waiting for Rob Ford to show up for council. It is antsy business: encounters with the mayor at city hall are chancy operations. Ford makes it difficult. Sometimes, he breaks into a run. Recently, when reporters and cameras were following him in from Nathan Phillips Square, the mayor called a charge through reporters lining a public staircase, knocking down a photographer. He was closely accompanied by city hall security, as he often is – with security imposing themselves between photographers and the mayor, and at one point, asking reporters to stop shouting questions. The same guard was bowled over himself in the crush. The situation was hardly a safe one for anyone in city hall at the time. Reporters and camera people were in immediate harm’s way, but so too were members of the public. The mayor might also have
david nickle the city harmed himself, although he seemed to feel he had the matter under control. Now, no one was seriously hurt – or at least says that they were. But this is an ongoing worry. Late last year, security stood by while the mayor bumped into councillor Pam McConnell as he ran across the floor of council, and allowed the mayor’s driver Jerry Agyemang to photograph members of the public in an intimidating way while the Ford brothers goaded them on. It is interesting to note that last week, while I was attempting to photograph Porter Airlines owner Robert Deluce making a deputation in council chambers from the same angle, security put a stop to it. It is clear that there are different sets of rules for the public and the press – even councillors – and members of the mayor’s personal staff. As a matter of disclosure – when I’m not writing this column, I’m serving as pres-
ident of the City Hall Press Gallery, and trying to deal with these matters. I do so with some sympathy for at least two of the three sides. As journalists, we have to be able to ask difficult questions and confront city politicians with uncomfortable truths. That’s not negotiable. And yet the situation that city hall security find themselves in these days is unprecedented: looking after the safety of everyone in a city hall, with a chief magistrate that demands they double as a personal guard and has been known to behave erratically. It is an awful situation. But at least until the election it’s a situation that will persist. As I finish this column, Ford has arrived at city hall. When asked where he might have been, he responded by pushing through the throng and grabbing the lens of a camera held by a CTV cameraman, pushing it away and disappearing into his office. It’s hardly an incident to inspire feelings of security.

Col Bickford was born in Toronto To the editor: There are some erroneous facts circulating about Col. Harold Child Bickford, who owned the land and building now known as the Guild Inn. A newspaper article states he was a retired American colonel. In 1876, Harold Child Bickford was born in Toronto in a house called Gore Vale. At the age of 19, he joined the military with the governor general’s body guard. Two years later he was posted to England and joined
the 6th Dragoon Guards and served in India, then in the South African war. In Africa, he became a hero when he saved the life of a soldier. This soldier, loaded with ammunition, fell off while riding a horse across the raging Assegai River. Bickford jumped into the river and saved the soldier. The horse was never seen again. When the First World War began, Bickford served in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in Valcartier, Quebec, as colonel.

A bold new funding strategy announced by the TTC on April 1 will see stations with less ridership shuttered and sold to developers to construct high-density subway platform condos. TTC chief customer Chris Upfold and communications chief Brad Ross explained the plan to TTC users in a short web video. Chester and Bessarion stations were among those on the chopping block, and the plan which would save the TTC “hundreds of dollars” in operating expenses. If it all sounds like a joke, that’s because the “plan” was part of an April Fool’s Day gag intended to highlight something the TTC believes is no laughing matter: the lack of stable, long term funding for the transit commission. S
tudents at a Scarborough school got a first-hand history lesson from a Holocaust survivor whose story was made famous through a book, stage play and film documentary. Francis Libermann Catholic High School students watched the documentary Tuesday and then had a question-and-answer session with one of its subjects: George Brady. The 86-year-old was joined by playwright Emil Sher, who turned the story into a stage play in 2006. “This is history coming alive for them, making a real connection,” history teacher Karen Dennis said. “We went beyond the textbook, and it really is more powerful that way.” The story of Brady and his younger sister Hana became public when Japanese educator and Holocaust museum director Fumiko Ishioka exhibited Hana’s suitcase in 2000.
This was a story in itself. In the late 1990s, Ishioka wrote to several Holocaust museums, asking them to loan her objects that belonged to children who lived in concentration camps. “Many resisted because these are precious artifacts. They were worried about damage, loss,” Sher said. “Ultimately one, the Auschwitz Museum, sent her a suitcase, amongst other things: a sweater, a shoe, a canister of Zyklon B, which was the pesticide that was used to poison the Jews in Auschwitz.” The suitcase had Hana’s name and birth date. Ishioka wanted to know more about her and asked various Holocaust museums whether they had a record of her. Ishioka was told Hana came to Auschwitz from a concentration camp the Germans called Terezin. Ishioka later visited the Terezin Ghetto Museum and found Hana’s name on a list of people imprisoned in Terezin. “Above the name is George’s

school celebrates 50 years wBridlewood Bridlewood Junior Public School celebrates its 50th anniversary next month. The school opened at 60 Bridlewood Blvd. in December 1963 with 10 classrooms. The school’s official opening date is Feb. 27, 1964. This year’s production is a dramatic comedy with a twist of mystery called Nasty Things, Murder, a one-act play by Arthur Lovegrove. The evening consists of a roast beef dinner, followed by the show, which will make you laugh and keep you guessing until the end. The action takes place in the lounge of the Grantley Home for Retired Gentlewomen, and what

you may imagine happens in such a place, does. Daily activities include lengthy conversations, playing cards and watching television. On this particular evening the ladies, Ethel (Barb
McDermott), Louise (Haley Brown), Madge (Elaine Mary Brown) and Mary (Eileen Chaloner), are watching a documentary murder mystery on television. When the set suddenly conks out part
way through the show, their conversation turns to intriguing gossip as they wonder about the ending. The ladies begin discussing the show, which details the murder of an old, wealthy woman who was murdered in her home. As they delve into the facts, such as who lived at the house with her and who had the motive to murder her, one resident, Mary, remains quiet, almost oblivious to their conversation about this real-life case. Suddenly, Mary decides to chime in on the discussion, revealing she actually knew the deceased woman and some other details that seem awfully personal to the case of this murder that an acquaintance shouldn’t know. Mary has so much informa-
tion it ends up making some of ladies, especially Louise, wonder if she’s more involved than she’s letting on. As Mary retires to her room, the evening takes a hilarious turn as these ladies contemplate if they have a murderess in their midst, or have their imaginations just run wild? This ensemble cast is fantastic in their roles and know how to deliver the more serious as well as comedic dialogue, which they deliver naturally and believable. It’s as if we we’re catching a glimpse of a real evening of gossip and intrigue between friends. Chaloner, as Mary, is a great balance between sweet and conniving. She’s so convincing in her role you’ll never see
what’s coming thanks to her believable portrayal. Brown is amazing as the frightened Louise with the over-the-top imagination, and McDermott and Mary Brown are great as the two level-headed ones of the group, who become the voices of reason. This show has a fantastic twist that makes for a satisfying and surprising ending. Come and support a great cause and enjoy an evening of food, fun and mystery! The STVC Invasion won gold at the tournament held on March 22. Invasion team members are Alice Zhao, Emily Quan,
Jenna Matys, Michelle Kuan, Raizel Reboldela, Jordan Kondo, Winnie Yang, Lauren Kaminski, Amber HardingSalazar, Kayla McKenzie and Ashley Lau. Meeting on Guild Park’s future set for Monday MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Supporters of Scarborough’s Guild Park are meeting Monday, April 7, to talk about the future after the extensive removal of diseased or damaged trees there this winter. A logging company hired by the City of Toronto spent
seven weeks culling ash trees that were infested with emerald ash borer, a fast-spreading beetle expected to kill nearly all of the city’s ash trees in a few years. Other trees were removed, the city says, either because they were damaged during the ice storm in December or were blocking “skidder
trails” needed to haul other trees away. Save The Guild, a group formed last month by residents angered by the cutting, has declared the strategy a “city-orchestrated disaster” and is calling for the entire park to be replanted immediately. Another group, Friends of Guild Park and Gardens, has called the cuts “heart-
breaking,” but says the park can be restored into one of the area’s treasures if its volunteers and other residents are given a “meaningful and ongoing say in what happens” there. Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie, who arranged for the 7 p.m. meeting in the cafeteria of
Sir Wilfred Laurier Collegiate Institute on Guildwood Parkway, has said the cuts were necessary. Toronto council was expected this week to support an agreement with Dynamic Hospitality and Entertainment to renovate the former Guild Inn in the park, and to run a restaurant with

Spotlight on Literacy workshop slated The Reading Partnership hosts a workshop led by attorney Lesra Martin called Spotlight on Literacy to raise awareness for literacy and literacy programs in the Kingston-Galloway/Orton Park (KGO) community. The Thursday, April 10, workshop takes place at Sir Robert L. Borden Business and Technical Institute, 200 Poplar Rd., from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Martin will deliver a pre-
sentation about his challenges with low-literacy and how he overcame them to become one of Canada’s top attorneys. An interactive workshop will follow, with the screening of a short mini-documentary about KGO residents dealing with low-literacy. The Reading Partnership is an organization committed to increasing child literacy by giving parents the skills they need to further help their children read. As a result, a
thousand books donated by Frontier College will be distributed at the event. In addition to Martin, other members will be present, including ABC Life Literacy Canada president Gillian Mason; The Reading Partnership managing director Camesha Cox; and storyteller Amma Ofori. Facilitators from several organizations like Toronto Public Health and Seed to Table will also be present.
