f we were to wipe off almost four years of dust from our crystal ball, the smoke would reveal a possible provincial election this spring. With that, comes uncertainty and, potentially, the province’s (and with it Toronto’s) transit file getting derailed – again. If we are to take Metrolinx at its word, the provincial transit agency has put everything on the table when it comes to transit in the Great Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). At its recent meeting, a long list of options was presented by staff, which will then get whittled down following consultations with the public and elected officials. More consultations? More waiting. And what feels like more of the same, which our view amounts to very little. Cynicism aside, Torontonians should attend Project any and all meetings when it comes to transit solutions. We deadlines need voices at the table. As many have to be met voices as we can muster. With some projects now underway – the Eglinton Crosstown LRT; the Scarborough subway was given the green light – and Metrolinx committed to a share of the subway relief line within 15 years, we have a shot at being part of the discussion. And according to Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig, the plans are not limited to one major project, but likely a series of improvements in the short, mid- and longterm. However, there needs to be a maximum time allotment for dealing with a project. No more open-ended deadlines. Projects take years – sometimes decades – to complete; so too much lag in decision-making is foolish. Each day we consult, every week we wait for another meeting, the longer it will take to actually finalize a transit solution for the GTHA. If Metrolinx is to embark on another series of consultations – the first round kicking off in March – we should be there to voice our ideas. With an initial short list of recommendations to be presented to the Metrolinx board in June, and a final list by winter, things will hopefully become focused. But when these projects will be completed is not so definite. A change in governments should not lead to changes to these approved projects. Deadlines have to be met. Decisions have to stick.

Will we see Canada in the men’s hockey final?
T
he Canadian men’s team has played a total of three, count ’em three, games in the Winter Olympic hockey tournament. They’ve won all of them. Ergo, they’ve lost none of them. They’ve scored 10 goals and given up a whopping total of two, count ’em, two. Yet every diehard Team Canada fan I know is fretting about the lads actually making it to the finals. Take Benjamin. The poor guy has the heebiejeebies. They’re not the run-of-the-mill heebiejeebies either. I’m talking serious heebie-jeebies, folks. Keeping pace in the department of anxiety is Victor who is a massive bundle of nerves. And Jeff? The dude’s knickers are in a knot. It’s surprising enough he’s wearing knickers in the first place, but to have them in a knot, too? Over
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY a hockey game? Then there’s Danny. He’s worried stiff. Jeremy is in a dither. Carl is on tenterhooks. And not to be outdone is Bart, who’s quaking in his boots. I mean it, too. Environment Canada has been monitoring the quake all week. I saw a report on the Weather Network this morning and I expect Grapes to do a feature on it on Coach’s Corner tonight. Now who am I leaving out here? Oh, yeah, Mike. How could I forget him? Mike is as big a Team Canada fan as they come and he’s on pins and needles. Meanwhile, David is worried stiff. Sonny is in a tizzy. Tommy is shaking like a leaf.
And Artie has butterflies in his stomach. Butterflies, it should be pointed out that were young caterpillars before the hockey started. Then there’s Ken who is panic stricken. Henry who is on the

edge of his seat. Max who has broken out in a cold sweat. And it’s nail-biting time for George. I don’t mean the nails on his fingers and toes, either. I mean real nails, sports fans. He’s that agitated. Yeah, they’re worried about Team Canada making it to the finals alright. Extremely worried. And for three very good
reasons: 1.) The game starts at 7 a.m. EST on Sunday morning. None of these yahoos have ever gotten up before 1 p.m. on a Sunday. Ever. 2.) That means if Canada qualifies they’ll have to rely on somebody to phone them to wake them up or they won’t be able to see their beloved team live. 3.) And this is the biggie. I’m the only one any of them know who gets up that early. That means they all have to trust that I’ll actually call. Interesting. I can’t wait to see what happens. Go, Canada, Go! Arrests made in distraction thefts

Two men and a woman face a total of 11 charges in connection with distraction thefts and robberies, police say. Police allege that the accused drove around seeking potential victims and that once a victim was identified,
one accused would approach him/her under the guise of needing directions. “The accused would then put fake jewelry on the victim as a gift, while using sleightof-hand, and remove the victim’s real jewelry,” police alleged in a news release. “The victim would be that the theft Sathya Sai unaware had occurred.” One victim, a 72-yearSchool of old woman, resisted, Canada and the accused used force against her. Three people were arrested at 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17. A 27-year-old man Fraser Institute: one of six was charged with three #1 schools in Toronto based counts of robbery and one count each of theft on provincial EQAO exams and conspiracy to commit an indictable JK-8 OPEN HOUSE offence. A 35-year-old woman March 7, 2014 @ 6:45 pm was charged with two counts of robbery and #4, 505 Ellesmere Road, one count each of theft and conspiracy to Toronto M1R 4E5 commit an indictable (416) 297-7970 offence. was charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. Police didn’t identify the accused because the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call 42 Division at 416-808-4200 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477). Police have the following advice for distraction theft victims: • don’t delay calling police and don’t be embarrassed (the faster police are able to respond, the better chance they’ll make an arrest) • call 911 if the crime is in progress (call 416-808-2222 for non-emergency situations) • memorize suspect descriptions and clothing (especially tattoos and scars) • when trying to determine age, height and weight, compare them to yourself • don’t chase or follow a suspect (your safety is more important than any possession).

TTC performance report slated
T
he TTC is promising to release a series of quarterly performance reports in 2014 to track how well it has lived up to past commitments to improve service. The reports, the first of which will be available by mid-April, are intended to evaluate how well the TTC has fared when it comes to implementing service improvements as promised in this year’s customer charter. Announced last week, the 2014 charter lists almost 40 promises for service improvements. Some of its first-quarter commitments include new janitor uniforms, additional staff to deal with WheelTrans customers, and spring cleaning at every TTC station. Other customer service pledges for this year range from the debut of new TTC streetcars and articulated buses to regular subway platform lighting maintenance. The re-usable smart fare card is offered throughout the GTHA, including GO Transit, and allows users to pre-purchase a select number of transit rides at a time, which can be spent by “tapping on” at designated portals inside transit stations and vehicles. Presto has experienced technical growing pains in the past, but vicepresident Robert Hollis told Metrolinx’s board of directors last week only 0.1 per cent of customers have reported not being able to use the card for an extended amount of time due to service outages. Agincourt Collegiate students win event; Jean Vanier students awarded trip to New York City ALI RAZA araza@insidetoronto.com Scarborough students Muhammad Roheemun and Timothy Yeung snagged the first place trophy at the 15th annual Toronto Automotive Technology Competition at the Canadian International Auto Show. The competition involved a test of automotive technical skill with 22 high schools from the Toronto area competing. Roheemun and Yeung brought the trophy back to Agincourt Collegiate Institute, the second time the school has won the competition. The pair were chosen from several Agincourt Collegiate students from training that started in November. “We got a bunch of kids that were interested,” said Mark Soloman, head of the Technological Education Department at Agincourt. “Then we whittle it down to
three, then to two.” Solomon made the decision to choose Roheemun and Yeung. The pair were chosen when they demonstrated the best performance in the initial group of students. At the competition, students performed several timed technical tasks on a 2014 Volkswagen Passat, The car was setup in a no-start condition by automotive instructors from Centennial College. As home to Canada’s largest transportation technology school, Centennial College was one of many sponsors for the Feb. 13 event. Roheemun and Yeung won the competition, receiving $750 each toward training at Centennial College in addition to several smaller prizes. Competition winners head to New York City to represent Canada at the National Automotive Technology
Competition in April. But this year, the duo won’t be going. Timothy Yeung, a Grade 11 student, does not qualify as he is too young. “I made the decision for him to go,” Solomon said. “He’s only in Grade 11 and won’t go to New York, but the experience is important and he can participate again next year.” In place of Roheemun and Yeung, second place winners Chelsea Dela Cruz and Paul Roach will compete nationally in the Big Apple. They are also from Scarborough, representing Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School. Sp o n s o r s w i l l c ov e r expenses as well as providing Dela Cruz and Roach with tools and equipment.

Meeting at Laurier C.I. Truck cut possible at local fire station >>>from page 1 by Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly, chose to defer a motion that would have had councillors vote on Porter’s expansion request Feb. 2. The airline wants a modification to the Toronto Port Authority’s operating agreement that would allow an extension of the airport’s runway and permit jet-powered aircraft to operate there. The executive committee is scheduling a special meeting on
March 25 to consider the Deputy City Manager’s report on the proposal and to hear public presentations. Those attending the Scarborough meeting are asked to provide comments in writing at the beginning of the session, and apart from personal information, they will be part of the public record in accordance with Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
>>>from page 1 Sunnybrook hospital for treatment. There were seven others in the building at the time. They were checked over by paramedics and released. Eckerman said the fire marshal’s office and the labour and environment ministries were notified of the incident. “When we ventilated to remove the toxic smoke from within the address, we had our guys stand back about 100 feet, 30 metres, from the doorway that we were venting the smoke out of just so they wouldn’t

breath it in.” Eckerman stressed there was “no real concern of any hazard to surrounding areas.” An ambulance bus, a TTC bus and 18 fire trucks were at the scene along with 52 firefighters. Damage was estimated at $100,000. The explosion comes at a time when Toronto Fire has raised the possibility of cutting a pumper truck from a station located near Coronation Drive. “When it comes to safety and
security, I think we have to take that extra step and make sure that that service level is there,” Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser said. “We increased the budget for ambulance services by quite a bit and to me we should’ve left the budget for fire department the same, the same service level. That to me I think would’ve been a good approach. ... The community is really concerned about this, and I think given the circumstances they have a right to be.”

It feels great to be the carrier of the month! I would like to thank my mom and dad for helping me on the days where the weather is bad and it’s definitely been cold and windy for the past few months. Sometimes you get to the point where you can’t feel your fingers but I guess that’s Canada for you. Throughout having this job I have met some new people in the neighbourhood and talked a lot more with my neighbours. It’s great to have this job because I don’t think babysitting is my thing!
I
n my career as a journalist, I’ve only made two politicians angry enough to put me on their do-not-return-calls black list. The first was former Mayor Mel Lastman, who never really got over the fact that I didn’t endorse him for mayor in the 1997 municipal election. The second was Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande. In 2004, a year after he was first elected, he took me on a pre-Christmas tour of his ward and made some comments about the changing demographics there: specifically, that white people were moving out as Chinese people were moving in. I recorded them on an old-fashioned magnetic tape, and reported them, accurately. They showed up in the Scarborough Mirror over Christmas. By New Year’s Eve, commentators from outlets across the country were saying the worst things about Councillor Del Grande. And that was it for us. For the next 10 years,
david nickle the city
Councillor Del Grande would not return phone calls, speak with me or even acknowledge my presence – with rare exceptions, usually when I’d written something that made him angry enough to warrant a tongue-lashing. On the weekend, he made it known through an interview with the Sun’s Sue-Ann Levy, that he won’t be seeking re-election in Ward 39. I have not called him about this. Given everything, I expect the call wouldn’t be returned. So instead, I write this column: in part, as an open letter to a councillor who has spent a career throwing up his arms in frustration and anger at his critics and his colleagues – and at the same time, accomplished many of the things I think he hoped to see happen after he was first elected in 2003. Del Grande came to city hall with an accounting background, and he believed fervently that he was a Best Buy CORRECTION NOTICE person to sort out NEWSPAPER RETRACTION FOR THE BEST BUY FEBRUARY 14 CORPORATE Toronto’s fiscal FLYER In the February 14 flyer, page 2, the HP Laptop with AMD Quad-Core woes. FEBRUARY 14 CORPORATE FLYER In the February When Rob Ford 14 flyer, on page 8, the Asus Laptop Featuring Intel® Core™ i7-4700HQ Processor (WebCode:10256772) was announced his advertised incorrectly. Please be advised that this laptop intention to run DOES NOT have a touchscreen. for mayor in 2010, We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers. Del Grande was
among the first to support him, and when Ford won, Del Grande’s support was rewarded with the job he first eyed in 2003: Toronto’s budget chief. And no one can deny: Councillor Del Grande worked that job hard. Possibly a little too hard, given the toll that it took on his health. Unlike other budget chiefs, he took on the lion’s share of the work himself – often complaining of the long hours he spent at home, trying to fit the camel-sized realities of the cost of government through Mayor Ford’s needle-sized expectations of the price. He put forward moderate compromises that he hoped would get the final budget through council. And it almost worked. But Del Grande quit the job in 2013, when council voted to add just a little more spending to his budget against his wishes. As far as he was concerned, he felt “vilified.” At this year’s budget meeting in January, he railed, quite accurately, against the lack of civility, and elsewhere has criticized, again quite accurately, the moral decline that Ford has brought to the office of mayor. And now, as he prepares to exit the realm, I hope he doesn’t think too poorly of the place that he feels used him so badly. It may not have lived up to his expectations – but really, over 10 years here, he has only exceeded so many of ours.

Campbell earns top honours at powerlifting event DAVID GROSSMAN active@insidetoronto.com Phil Campbell has the eye-popping physique, the muscular frame and the bulging calves to leave people assuming he’s some kind of body builder. Turns out Campbell is far from one of those macho guys who can do things like crunch pop cans between arms muscles. A Scarborough resident, Campbell can lift weights, lots of them, and he proved it after claiming top spot in the deadlift competition at the second annual College and University RAW Powerlifting Open held in Markham recently. Campbell, at six-foot, 205 pounds, is the kind of dude you don’t want to mess with after he lifted three times his weight to claim top spot. He was also No. 1, in the combined deadlift, squat and bench competitions, among college entries from across the province. Only Eric Willis, from Carleton University in Ottawa, was able to accumulate more points over three events with 1,665 points. Campbell, with 1,490, was also in a different weight category. Campbell had some displeasure in not sweeping all three events. Each competitor had three attempts and Campbell went 600 pounds, then 636 before his championship hoist of 650. In the bench competition, Campbell pulled off lifts of 325, 340 and 375 pounds, but faulted in the final leaving his second one to count. And in the squat final, Campbell had a personal best lift of 500 pounds. He had miscues on the other two attempts. “Wasn’t too happy with that,” he said. “I know I could have done much better. Few slips here and there, but it was a great learning experience.” The 23 year old, who lives in the Sheppard and Meadowvale area, graduated from West Hill Collegiate after starring in football as a linebacker and, in his graduating year, selected as one of the team’s MVPs in rugby. Now, the gritty performances on the field have been shelved as his focus is on studying accounting at George Brown College with plans to continue his education at Ryerson University. “After high school, I took a year off to work and wanted to continue training like an athlete,” said Campbell, who has a full set of weights in his basement
and credits his older brother for his success. “My brother gave me the weights and I thought I’d give it a shot. I just knew I had to take care of my body. Things are going well, no broken bones or torn muscles. Just keeping in good shape and staying healthy.”
Campbell, with a harness around his waste, used to drag weighed down sleds through a nearby park. But his time is now focused on lifting academic grades, already pulling off a 3.20 (out of 4.00) grade point average in college. He also has a part time job working at a warehouse often
lifting 40 to 70 pound boxes of hardwood planks. “I think it’s wise to take time off (lifting) right now,” said Campbell, who used to train several days a week in his home basement. “Have to give my body some rest.” Pine Hills Cemetery and Visitation Centre is a business name of Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries. Spooner set for Olympic hockey showdown Scarborough’s Natalie Spooner scored two goals to help propel Canada’s women’s hockey team to a 3-1 win over Switzerland and into the gold medal game against the United States today at the Sochi Winter Olympics. Spooner scored Canada’s first two goals in the semifinal win over Switzerland on Monday. The U.S. beat Sweden 6-1 in Monday’s other semifinal game, setting up the Canada/U.S. showdown between the arch rivals for the gold medal today at noon. Canada is the three-time defending Olympic gold medal winner, while the U.S. have won four of the last five world championships. Monday’s goals were Spooner’s first of the Sochi Games. She has a total of four points in four games at the Winter Olympics.

Birchmount grad sets new Canadian indoor 200-metre sprint record Aaron Brown, who grew up in east-end Toronto and represented Canada at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, is doing his best to ensure the Winter Olympics, underway in Sochi, Russia, doesn’t steal all the thunder. In his final year on a full
scholarship at the University of Southern California, Brown set a new indoor Canadian record for the 200 metres with a time of 20.53 seconds at a weekend college meet in Albequerque, New Mexico. His winning time was the fastest in the world this year
and it eclipsed the previous Canadian record of 20.66 set by Olympic gold medalist Bruny Surin in 1998. London Olympics Brown, who helped the Canadian 4x100 metre relay team to a bronze
medal at last year’s world championships, grew up in the area of area of Coxwell Avenue and Gerrard Street, attending Bowmore public school and graduating from Scarborough’s Birchmount Park Collegiate. Besides track, he was also a star football player for his
high school and suited up for the Scarborough Thunder club football team. Brown also won the 60m dash at the meet with a personal-best time of 6.55 seconds, which bettered his own school record and tied for the top collegiate time in the U.S. this season.

Relief of Toronto subway congestion a priority for Metrolinx RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com From big-ticket transit expansion to improvements to existing GO service, everything is on the table for Metrolinx when it comes to improving subway congestion. The transit planning agency has already committed to delivering its share of a subway relief line within 15 years, part of its list of priority projects.
During a meeting of the Metrolinx board last Friday, a long list of options was presented by staff studying which will get whittled down following consultations with the public and elected representatives. According to Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig, the plans will not be limited to one major capital project, but likely a series of improvements in the short, mid and long-term with input from the regions’ major transit
providers including the TTC. “We’re not talking about a single project, we’re looking at a series of things that collectively Metrolinx, the TTC, York Region Transit and others have roles to play in achieving,” said McCuaig following the meeting. “We’ve come to the conclusion there’s not one single answer, there’s a whole bunch of different challenges. There’s different answers to different challenges and
I think that’s what we’re trying to develop.” Unlike a corresponding city and TTC-led study of the subway relief line – details of which are expected to be unveiled within weeks – looking specifically at how and where to best build a new downtown subway relief line, the Metrolinx’s Yonge Relief Network study attempts to plot out a “mental map” of the challenges facing transit riders living inside and outside the 416 boundar-
ies and facing heavy congestion on the Yonge subway line. Options under consideration for the study are diverse and range from high cost undertakings like expanding and electrifying the GO train network to relatively straightforward improvements. The meetings will be held in concert with the city and the TTC. For more transit details visit us online at www. scarboroughmirror.com

Protect Your Young Family. Today and in Your Future. Many people don’t think too much about life insurance — until they have a family. If you don’t already have life insurance, or have only minimal coverage, now is a great time to make sure your children and spouse would be financially protected if you were to pass away. Life insurance can help by providing a tax-free benefit that your family could use to cover expenses, pay off loans and debts, pay for your children’s education and more. Here are some things to keep in mind when it comes to life insurance: ¡ Your life insurance benefit can be used to pay for whatever your family needs or wants — from mortgage costs to day-to-day expenses, to summer camps and vacations. ¡ A stay-at-home spouse needs life insurance too, even if they’re not earning an income. The work they do at home, including childcare, housekeeping, cooking and more, comes with significant financial value. Life insurance could cover those costs and give them the flexibility to take time off work to help themselves and your children deal with their loss. ¡ Even if you have coverage from work, it may not be enough. Plus, it may not continue if you were to leave your current employer. Your own policy stays with you, regardless of your employment status. ¡ We offer a variety of life insurance plans that can suit your budget, lifestyle and needs. And, you can make changes to your policy as your life changes and your needs evolve. Underwritten by RBC Life Insurance Company.

Soknacki campaign files freedom of information request on mayor’s spending DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto mayoral candidate David Soknacki’s campaign has filed an official request for information showing whether Mayor Rob Ford’s office is being improperly used as a campaign headquarters for his re-election. Soknacki’s campaign manager Brian Kelcey filed the freedom of information
request at Toronto City Hall Feb. 18 – asking for documentation on the activities of members of Ford’s senior staff from Jan. 3, when Ford registered for re-election, up to Feb. 18. Kelcey alleged that the Soknacki campaign has gathered enough information to suggest that Ford and his brother and campaign manager Doug Ford may have been using office staff
and resources to boost the mayor’s campaign in the opening weeks of the 2014 election campaign. obvious clue The most obvious clue, Kelcey said, was an email from the mayor’s communications person Amin Massoudi, announcing the brothers’ Ford Nation YouTube series in early February.
But Kelcey alleged that the campaign has gathered other information indicating a possibility that the mayor is using city resources to bolster his campaign. “We’re reasonable people,” said Kelcey. “If the documents come out of the mayor’s office suggest he is sticking to his stated principles, that’s great. We will have wasted a little bit of campaign money. On the
other hand, this is Mayor Rob Ford’s office. We know what these requests usually turn up.” Kelcey insisted that the request wasn’t “a fishing expedition.” “We have at least one or two other communications that went through other channels that suggested to us different people were having conversations that would suggest there were also campaign
conversations,” he said. The request marks a more aggressive stance from the Sokancki campaign, just days after an announcement of Soknacki’s land transfer tax policy was upstaged by Doug Ford, who told reporters to expect a visit from wellknown magician David Blaine at the mayor’s office.

HOLY SPIRIT, Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who will give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory, Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favour has been granted. M.L.
