Taste of CELEBRATING CANADA Lawrence starts Friday ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Organizers are expecting 150,000 visitors to this year’s Taste of Lawrence, a three-day festival that celebrates culture through food and music. The event takes place on Lawrence Avenue between Warden Avenue and Birchmount Road and runs from this Friday at 6 p.m., through to Sunday evening at 7 p.m. “Pe o p l e f ro m a l l ov e r Scarborough will come to this event, and it’s a great way for our local business members to network with that greater community,” event manager Bruce Scavuzzo said. “These businesses are not just making sales that day but in fact are gaining customers who will come back repeatedly throughout the year.” The festival was founded 12 years ago by Ward 37 Scarborough-Centre Councillor Michael Thompson and a group of community members with the aim of attracting visitors to a stretch of Lawrence, which now falls under the Wexford Heights BIA. The first event was held in a parking lot and attracted just over 1,000 people. “Now it’s Scarborough’s largest single street event,” Scavuzzo said. “We have 37 food vendors. >>>HUGE, page 3

Pan Am Torch Relay pays visit to Scarborough The Pan Am torch takes a tour of Scarborough this Sunday, and like many athletes at the Games, it will be moving awfully fast. As Toronto’s Games approach, its torch run will spark celebrations on July 5 as it makes its way through the area. The largest – where the flame will ignite a portable cauldron representing the Games – is a party outside the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, on Morningside Avenue south of Hwy. 401, from noon to 4 p.m. There will be family activities,

food trucks, and entertainment – including an appearance by Scarborough native Maestro Fresh Wes – as well as the creation of a “live community art mural.” The torch will also visit the Toronto Zoo, where it will be carried from the courtyard inside the front entrance to Waterside Theatre by Max Domi, named Best Forward of the World Juniors Hockey Tournament in January after Canada won gold. “Representinng your coun>>>PAN, page 8

There was concern for the players’ safety, them being held up in muck, or getting injured. The fields were simply unplayable. Playing on them would have damaged the fields in Scarborough

There was no way we could do that.” Ellis said rather than saying the tournament was cancelled, he insisted on calling it abandoned. “We didn’t cancel it,” he said. “Everyone wanted to play. You can’t believe how devastated we are. This event takes a year to plan and then to find out the whole thing is abandoned, it’s deflating.”

He added 99.4 per cent of people were understanding about the announcement. “Every team got to play two games on Saturday,” he said, including teams that came as far as Montego Bay, Chicago, Rochester, New Jersey. “We’re just profoundly sad that the weather didn’t cooperate and we were forced to abandon the tournament,” he said. “We hope to see everyone next year for our 50th.”

ith Canada Day celebrations wrapped up lastnight with fireworks at numerous locations, it’s now time for residents to get geared up for Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay events starting this Saturday in our city and continuing until the official opening of the Games on Friday, July 10. The torch relay started back on May 30 with the flame’s arrival at Harbourfront. From there, the torch has been on a 41-day trek across Canada. Along the way, it’s made stops in Vancouver, Halifax, Winnipeg, Calgary and numerous cities and towns across Ontario. By the time the torch relay wraps up next Friday, it will have been carried by some 3,000 torchbearers and visited more than 130 communities. For Torontonians, the torch relay excitement starts Saturday evening and there will be numerous opportunities for residents to get up close and personal with the torch as it makes its way our view through many of our city’s neighbourhoods through to July 10. Get up close The torch relay starts its day at Canadian Forces Base Trenton on and personal Saturday, and will arrive in Toronto late afternoon for a huge comin your city munity celebration on the Prince Edward Viaduct (also known as the Bloor viaduct) beginning at 5 p.m. Metroland Media Toronto will be at Saturday evening’s event, along with many other community groups and organizations. The celebration will culminate with the lighting of the Luminous Viel on the viaduct. The next day, the torch relay travels mostly through Scarborough with stops at Variety Village, the Toronto Zoo and a big celebration at 2 p.m. across from the Pan Am aquatic centre at Morningside Avenue and Military Trail. Sunday evening will also see the torch relay visit the Afrofest celebrations in the Beach at 7 p.m., and the Aga Khan Museum in North York starting at 8:15 p.m. The rest of the week, torch relay events in Toronto are planned for Thorncliffe Park and Etobicoke on Monday as the relay works its way through downtown; other events are planned in Etobicoke on Tuesday; a visit to Mel Lastman Square in North York on Wednesday; York and then the downtown core on Thursday; and finally the opening ceremonies Friday night. Who says pizza has to be high in calories? TDSB should The bad news is that the rain on Saturday forced us to put our backyard barbecue party on hold until later in the summer. The good news? Moving indoors didn’t stop us from having a good time. We ordered fast food instead. Well, reasonably fast, anyway. Me: “So, what’s it gonna be, kids?” Kaylee: “Pizza.” Brandon: “Pizza.” Paige: “Pizza.” Lucas: “Pizza.” Me: “Wow. That was easy. Nice to see the weather didn’t put a damper on anybody’s spirits. So it’s unanimous. Chinese food it is. Coming right up. I‘ll call Egg Roll Egg Roll right now.” Kaylee: “Jamieeeee. Do you have to try and make a joke out of everything?” Me: “Ah, so you are admitting I’m funny?” Brandon: “She said ‘try’ Jamie. It takes forever to cut it off.” Lucas: “No dough, either, while you’re at it. Dough just doesn’t do it for me.” Me: “So, let’s see if I’ve got this straight. That makes it one small pizza... Kaylee: “Small? Forget that. It has be large.” Brandon: “No way. It has to be extra large.” Me: “Extra large it is, with nothing on it, nothing under it, nothing in it, nothing around it. Nothing even remotely in the same jurisdiction as it. Which, by process of elimination means we’re talking dipping sauce only. To the editor: The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is again back in the news. The Ontario government finally has set up a special panel to consult with the public and find if it is time to break up this huge white elephant into smaller boards, which operated that way before amalgamation. The TDSB is too large. It has had a very difficult time working within its financial means. I hope that this commission comes back after public consultations with a recommendation of breaking up the mega board into smaller boards. The newer, smaller boards should start with a new mandate to serve our children’s future for competing in the global world. Moe Irshad

Canada Day tribute to late Scarborough restaurant owner

grandchildren together. They had settled in Scarborough in 1973, running restaurants together (Eastway Restaurant 1972-1992 and The Corner Diner 1996-2001). He had fed thousands of hungry patrons, many whom became life long friends. He loved Scarborough, and he fundraised for his children’s schools, Galloway Road Public School and West Hill Collegiate. The restaurants sponsored many sports teams (some hockey and baseball, but mostly soccer teams such as Wexford, West Hill, Guildwood), he loved

and supported the Robbie Tournament, billeting players from all over the world, and he even started his own soccer team, The Scarborough Spartans. He loved to cook and see people enjoying his massively portioned meals. He showed love through food. Many people kept coming back for his delicious menu, (mmm those perfect home fries with the secret spice) but also for his punchlines. He had the greatest tall tales and one-liners. In his retirement years, he gardened and gave most of what he grew away to neighbours and family. Last year, he hadn’t been feeling well and complained of a sore back, which slowed him down, but didn’t stop him from his daily routines. He was tired and his back hurt. But he continued with his routines. He had bought tomato plants for the garden and intended to plant despite his back pain. Right before Father’s Day

in the hopes of getting something to dull the pain (so that he could get to the garden), he went to the hospital. Instead, they admitted him, ran tests, diagnosed him with a metastasized cancer and gave him a very grim prognosis. Despite that, while in hospital, he managed to eat heartily, watch lots of World Cup soccer, charm some

nurses, chat with his priest, tell a few jokes, spend time with family (and in some cases he was the one comforting others) and celebrate his 49th wedding anniversary. He made the most of those last two weeks and he expressed that he was fulfilled, grateful and thankful for a wonderful life. In the end, he faced his

To the editor: It seemed appropriate that many said their goodbyes to Jim Kakaletris on Canada Day last year. He was a staunchly proud Canadian with a classic immigrant story, who often said Greece was his biological mother, but Canada was his adoptive one; the one that wanted him, nourished him and raised him. At 16, he left his parents behind in the little village of Mystra outside of Sparta, Greece and without the grasp of the English language decided to travel via ship, alone, across an ocean to join his brothers and sisters in Toronto and to test his luck in a new land. Over the years, other Greeks would lament about leaving the motherland and dreamt about returning “home”. Not Jimmy. He was always grateful to Canada and he never took this country for granted. He met and married Soula in 1965, had four children together and ultimately, five

Metrolinx report puts pressure on mayor, council T

here are a couple of ways to look at the new report from Metrolinx that draws attention to the need for a downtown relief subway line, for which no funding exists. One way is to see it as a stick with which to hit the TorontoCouncil-supported Scarborough subway extension and Mayor John Tory’s proposed SmartTrack system: one a project that is unnecessary, the second a project that will only provide short-term

relief; and both, unlike the relief line, close to fully funded. The Metrolinx report, Yonge Relief Network Study, was released in June, but Mayor Tory and council have had access to countless other opinions and studies indicating the Yonge subway line is running over capacity and a relief line looping down from the BloorDanforth line and possibly points north is the cure. The study lays it out in starker terms. Toronto and Metrolinx have made some headway in mitigating the crowding on the Yonge line. The automatic train con-

trol and new, roomier trains help, as does the GO Regional Express plan that will form the backbone of Tory’s SmartTrack proposal. That will meet needs over the next 15 years. Past that, we’re all back in the same swamping boat. Given all that, one might call Toronto’s political leadership for being short-sighted and pandering – funding inadequate short term transit plans at the expense of a longterm solution. That is a legitimate call. But the only call that follows from that is a “throw the bums out” movement, and there are three years

There is a greater pretext for doing so in the matter of the Downtown Relief Line — in that all of the city loses out when the hub of the system crowds to the point of dysfunction. But on the subject of dysfunction, the politics won’t make it easy. The suburban-downtown rift

They’re determined to get traffic through their neighbourhood to slow down. Dorset Park’s volunteer safety ambassadors think they know what needs to be done to keep local children safe, even if Scarborough politicians don’t like it. They want speed humps installed on Antrim Crescent. “For us, it’s the only way. Now, it’s up to the city to decide,” Lamyaa Hassan, one member of the group, said last month. Scarborough councillors in the past have shown they don’t like speed humps, which are built on residential roads to slow traffic down. Three years ago,

Scarborough’s community council sided with residents and voted to have speed h u m p s r e m ov e d f r o m Oakridge Drive, between Br imley and McCowan roads. Several councillors said the humps “don’t work” or just didn’t belong in Scarborough. But the ambassadors, who live near Antrim, have noticed traffic, in order to avoid congestion on Kennedy Road, comes through the street and Dundalk Drive to get to Ellesmere Road. Some people drive through at high speed, added Ghada Al Kalaq, who said her son plays in Glamorgan Park and was almost hit crossing Antrim. She and other volunteers stood outside apartment buildings on the street for a couple of hours each day

to get the signatures they needed for a petition. “It’s so important for this street. Many kids live in this area,” she said. On April 1, the group delivered to the petition to the city hall office of their local councillor, Norm Kelly. Members were told a traffic study on the humps could take up to two years, Hassan said. The group is undaunted, however. It wrote letter to city to fix a shed and broken picnic tables in Glamorgan Park, which the city did. The city also added big rocks at the playground which people can sit on and watch their children. Now, people with safety issues go to the group, which meets each month at the Dorset Park Community Hub, for help.

Swimmer’s torch run will be bittersweet SAM JURIC sjuric@insidetoronto.com

For Para-Swimmer Megan Sherwin, bearing the Pan Am Torch as she runs along Danforth Avenue this Sunday will be bitter sweet as the memory of her best friend; Cassidy Sheng will tread closely behind her. “I wanted to represent Cassidy,” said Sherwin, a student at Birchmount Park Collegiate. Learning how to say goodbye with grace is usually a lesson learned later on in life. For Megan that particular lesson arrived when she was 14 when Cassidy lost a gruelling struggle with cancer which claimed her left leg, a part of her lung, and began to eat away at her spine. Cassidy died on Jan. 10, 2015. Megan sits on the couch, vivacious while simultaneously possessing a natural poise some adults are unable to manage. Memory of Cassidy She is happy to recall the memory of Cassidy. “It will be cool to pass on the torch to Cassidy’s brother because she was an honorary torchbearer,” said Sherwin. Forced to say goodbye to Cassidy, Megan has managed to maintain an infectious hope for the future despite enduring a great loss. She met Cassidy at Scarborough’s Variety Village where the two swam together on the Flames swim team. Megan was hoping to swim for Canada at the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games in August, but has decided that perhaps she wasn’t ready. “My turn will come,” she

said. Peering into the future, Me g a n s e e s t h e 2 0 2 0 Paralympics in Tokyo ahead. “I’m becoming more serious. In the next year or so, my training will become more intense,” she said. “2020 will be my year to shine,” said Megan. Megan was nominated by Variety Village to be selected as a Pan Am Torchbearer. “I’ll be doing it for Variety Village, Cassidy, and her brother. Even though I won’t be competing it’s still going to be cool to be a part of it somehow,” she said. Home soil

“It’s great that the Pan Am Games are on home soil,” Megan said. She hopes to snag tickets to catch some volleyball during the games. Since she was eight-yearsold Megan has become increasingly involved in swimming, having since joined the Flames swim team at Variety Village. She appreciates the way swimming has helped her grow. “Swimming has actually helped my disability,” said Megan. Disability swimming is organized into categories which indicate the levels of functional disability, ranging from S1 to S10. First tested as a category S7 disabilities swimmer, Megan has improved since. She is now a class S8 disabilities swimmer. Her specialty is the 100 metre backstroke. At birth Megan suffered from a stroke causing the left side of her body to become weaker than her right side. “It can make some things

more difficult like doing-up a buttoned shirt and things like that can take a little longer. Half the time though, I forget I have a disability,” Megan said. Swimming has become the unexpected teacher in Megan’s life. “It’s taught me independence and self-confidence. It’s taught me to be myself,” she said. Swimming has also helped her to understand everyone has their individual weaknesses and strengths. “It’s important to know what your weaknesses are. It can help you develop them into strengths,” she said. “If I want to do something I will find a way to do it,” Megan said. A Pan Am Torchbearer, a para-swimmer and only 15-years-old. Unsure of where life will take her after competitive swimming she is sure she will remain an advocate for people with disabilities. Ambassador “I’m an ambassador for Variety Village. I want to tell people here you are always included and you are never looked at for what you can’t do but what you can do,” said Megan. “You always feel welcome here. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind place,” Megan said. Megan will be running 200 metres and passing on the torch to Aaron Sheng, (Cassidy’s brother) on Sunday morning. “Cassidy taught me to live life to the fullest, take risks, and have no regrets,” said Megan.

Centre on McNicoll Avvenue for another five-minute stop around noon. It will soon make its way west to the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto on Sheppard Avenue at around 12:55, before arriving at the zoo at 1:18 p.m., for 10 minutes. The person carrying the

torch into the CCCGT will be its chairperson, Dr. Ming-tat Cheung. Celebrations outside the centre will last from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will include a lion dance, drumming, First Nations and Bollywood dances, martial arts and singing before and after the torch arrives. Later, the torch will

reach University of Toronto Scarborough, and the Aquatic Centre, where the run will pause from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. By 5:39 p.m., however, the torch will be at Don Montgomery Community Centre on Eglinton Avenue, for another five-minute stop.

MP seeks changes to Rouge Park act A Scarborough MP’s private member’s bill is the latest sign the battle over the future of Rouge Park isn’t over. Scarborough-Rouge River MP Rathika Sitsabiaesan says the the Rouge National Urban Park Act, which became law on April 23, is “critically flawed.” A private bill Sitsabiaesan, a New Democrat, introduced recently, seeks

to change the act by “prioritizing the protection and restoration of ecological integrity and watershed health,” instead of giving equal protection to other interests in the park, such as farming. Ontario’s Liberal government last year agreed with several conservation groups that the Conservative government’s legislation for the park is too weak on environmental protection for

the Rouge River Watershed, and has refused to hand over provincial land which constitutes a majority of the park. Conservatives, Parks Canada, and some other supporters of their vision for a Rouge NUP disagree with these arguments and the province’s position. There is no chance Sitsabiaesan’s bill will be passed prior to October’s election.

Residents will soon be able to purchase a TTC day pass with their smartphones. Starting next week, The TTC will make available a mobile application, TTCconnect, for download which will make it possible for riders to purchase group or single day passes on their phones using a credit card. Unlike paper passes which go into effect at the time they’re bought, you can pre-purchase your ticket and activate it via the app up to a year after the pass was bought. And you can purchase and activate up to 20 passes. The app will be available for iOS and Android users to start, but the TTC says Blackberry and Windows phone users could be added to the list in the future.

Special carpool lanes installed all throughout the Greater Toronto Area for the upcoming Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games went into effect this week, and the verdict from drivers was less than flattering. On Monday the first day of enforcement, jam-ups were reported on major roadways such as Hwy. 401 and Don Valley Parkway. The OPP was kept busy handing out $110 tickets to singleoccupant vehicles improperly using the lanes. You need to have a special Games pass or have at least three people in your vehicle, reduced to two persons at

the end of July, to legally use the lanes. Emergency vehicles and taxis can also make use of the lanes.

The City of Toronto released its latest statistics for pothole repairs last week and it would appear the numbers remain high. According to available figures posted by the city’s winter operations division, the city averages 237,000 pothole fills a year. So far this year it’s at 141,693, a number which includes 4,519 filled potholes during the week of June 15-19. Last year the city set a record with 354,000 pothole repairs between January and November.

One month in and ridership of the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link appears to be within Metrolinx’s forecasts. The provincial transit planning agency unveiled the four-stop train connection between Union Station and Toronto Pearson airport in early June. Despite reports of empty trains on its first day of service Saturday, June 6, UP President Kathy Haley told Metrolinx’s board of directors last week the line is averaging 2,250 riders per day. This projects favourably to the stated goal of having 5,000 daily riders on average

HOV lanes now operating The 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games are fast approaching, but before that comes new traffic restrictions. Prior to the Pan Ams officially beginning Friday, July 10, with the opening ceremony in Toronto, a temporary network of carpool lanes will officially go into effect across Southern Ontario imposing strict restrictions on traffic not related to the Games. From now until Aug. 18 the HOV Games Route Network will offer privileged use of the left-most lanes found on major highways and roadways between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. to: n Games personnel (organizers, athletes, spectators, credentialed media) n Emergency services vehicles n Licensed taxis and airport limousines (latter on provincial highways only) n Electric vehicles with Ontario
