The Junior Carnival is returning to Scarborough this Saturday, giving local young masqueraders a chance to take part in the Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival closer to home. The family-friendly event starts at 11 a.m. with a parade, and the fun will then continue until 8 p.m. at Neilson Park in Malvern. The parade, with an expected 1,500 children, will start at the Malvern Community Centre, heading east along McLevin Avenue to Sewells Road and southwest to Neilson Road before continuing north on Neilson to Neilson Park south of Finch. Also, on July 26, Scarborough’s P.C. Ho Theatre will host the Kaiso 365 - Calypso Monarch Finals. The Caribbean Carnival’s Grand Parade along Lakeshore Boulevard and in Exhibition Place is on Aug. 2.
His recreation and mentoring program for youth in Morningside Heights has fresh municipal support, but Rob
Rogers says his neighbourhood’s biggest problem remains the lack of a local community centre. A former provincial athlete, Rogers founded the 3T (Toronto Teen Track) Program in 1996,
and has run it, more or less, on a shoestring budget since. When city councillors stopped grants he relied on for a decade - a few thousand dollars a year to cover insurance and school board permits - Rogers
started paying out of his pocket, he said, rather than disappoint 20 young men who expect him to be a mentor. The past several months has seen things turn around for 3T. A new city recreation grant
“helped us to keep the doors open,” and Rogers partnered with Toronto’s Youth Action Network to share its charitable status. This made 3T a youth-led >>>area, page 10

Olivia Chow, left, Mayor Rob Ford, David Soknacki, Karen Stintz and John Tory participate in the mayoral debate held Tuesday night at the Global Kingdom Ministries on Markham Road, hosted by the Canadian Tamil Congress. The debate saw the top five contenders in the race to be next mayor of Toronto square off on a number of issues, but transit plans for Scarborough were among the most hotly debated of the topics. Scarborough subways top issue at mayoral debate MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com
“a complacent non-leader,” while Stintz and Chow painted Tory as the only candidate on stage who had no experience at city hall. When Soknacki, a for mer Scarborough councillor, tried to defend plans for a light-rail route from Kennedy station he was booed by Ford supporters in a crowd filling nearly half the 1,200 seats at Global Kingdom Ministries on Markham Road, just south of the LRT route. “If we had light rail transit, there would be a transit stop across the street,” said Soknacki, who believes local businesses would benefit from light rail. “A subway would suck these jobs downtown; an LRT would keep these jobs in Scarborough.” Chow, a former MP, said the LRT is ready to start construction, while a subway would cost $1 billion more and require four years of study. She also promised to ease crowding on Scarborough bus routes, which Chow blamed on Ford, by increasing local service by 10 per cent. Stintz, the city’s former TTC chairperson, stuck with the idea congestion is Toronto’s top problem, and said she will start building the Scarborough subway and the DRL. “When you build the transit, the jobs will come,” she said. Tory, who ran for mayor against
Returned from two months in rehab and standing in a Scarborough church, Rob Ford talked about the proposed Bloor-Danforth subway extension from Kennedy station as if it was already built. “I built the subway in Scarborough,” said Toronto’s mayor, who also pledged to build a Sheppard subway extension through Scarborough and a Downtown Relief Line. “This is going to happen.” The self-proclaimed “subway mayor” also declared his four opponents at the Tuesday night debate, including Scarborough subwaysupporters John Tory and Karen Stintz, all “want” light-rail transit and will build it if elected, effectively accusing Tory and Stintz of lying. Tory, Stintz, Olivia Chow and David Soknacki landed some soft rhetorical blows on Ford – an admitted addict caught on tape saying terrible things before he finally sought treatment this spring – plus a few on each other. Chow said Ford is a terrible role model who has embarrassed Toronto in front of the world. “Rob Ford isn’t going to resign – so join me in firing him,” she said, to cheers and boos at the event hosted by the Canadian Tamil Congress. Tory, at one point, called Ford
Ford’s predecessor David Miller, promised the Scarborough subway and his own SmartTrack plan for electrified two-way train service, which includes six Scarborough stops he said will be paid for by the province. Both projects, he said, will be magnets for jobs. When he was asked a question about Toronto’s Municipal Land Transfer Tax, Ford glanced down for a moment. “I said I’d get rid of it. I couldn’t with the council that we had,” he said, before pledging to “take another crack at getting rid of it.” None of the other candidates on stage would match this promise about a tax that brings the city $358 million a year. “Anybody who says they’ll do away with it is not being straight with you,” Tory said. Ontario’s former Progressive Conservative leader also called the management system at city hall “archaic.” “We have managers that manage two people,” he said, while Soknacki said rising budgets for Toronto police and the city’s emergency services must be examined more carefully. The municipal election is on Oct. 27.

Presenting transit in Toronto as it relates to you
Write us
T
here’s so much going on with transit in Toronto these days. Construction projects are popping up everywhere – on roadways, highways, tracks and bike lanes. We all know about the maintenance work on the Gardiner Expressway, but do you know what’s planned for your local streets? The Union-Pearson Air Rail Link, the Relief Subway Line, the Eglinton Crosstown LRT – all major projects in the works, but do you know how each one may affect you? Or when they’ll be complete? Or how much they cost and who’s paying for them? Torontonians may agree transit is an important topic, but it’s been our experience that the subject is so mired in technical jargon and bureaucratic red tape, it’s difficult for the average person to comprehend the picture. People aren’t sure how our view big it affects them – and when that connection is lost, people become Our special disengaged. That’s why The Mirror and our website has sister papers at Metroland Media latest news Toronto have launched an online resource called The Transit Project. It’s a website designed to provide you the latest news on transit and commuting in and across this city. It’s tailored to provide you information on projects as it relates to you – by commuter type and/ or geography. We’ve got an interactive map of the city that provides reports on the areas you select. We’ve got overviews of the major projects on the go, like the Union Station revitalization, but also projects that are still on the books for the future, like the Yonge North Subway Extension. And then there’s our ongoing transit news pieces written by transit reporter Rahul Gupta (@ TOinTransit), as well as other staff on issues that impact our local communities. There’s helpful info on getting around the city, by car, bike, TTC or GO train. This is just the latest in a series of online products we’re creating to add value to your weekly newspaper. Many people visited our World Cup site at www. insidetoronto.com/WorldCupTO to find venues to watch games, read game and team news, and tap into the culture of participating nations. The Transit Project is a resource we plan to grow, especially with feedback from you. So check it out, bookmark it and visit often for updates: www.insidetoronto.com/transit. Send feedback to project manager Grace Peacock at gpeacock@insidetoronto.com

Computer and Internet lingo 101 W
hile dependency on the Internet is growing by the second, there are still many seniors who have yet to get their first computer, let alone one of the jazzier new devices now flooding the market. The cost is a factor, of course, and the technology is very intimidating to neophytes, too. But what’s also scaring them off is the baffling computer and Internet lingo. I can’t say I blame those people. I’ve been connected for ages and I still regularly struggle with the jargon myself. answers to faqs So, in an effort to try and ease some of the fears newbies have about finally giving in and getting in the game, here are answers to the most common questions. 1. What the heck is a
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY
cable modem? Of course, you mean who the heck is Cable Modem and he was the runner-up in American Idol 2 to the overwhelming winner, Maxell Tapes. 2. What is best laptop out there for me? Given that enormous gut sir, I would say a very loosefitting cardigan. 3. I keep hearing bandwidth is very important. How do you measure it exactly? Easy, peasy. Left to right. You start with the drummer, followed by the lead guitarist, then the rhythm section, the background vocalists and always end with the lead singer. 4. What is a cursor? Every coach in professional sports, apparently. 5 When would I expect to
double click? Right after you’ve been sitting in a chair for a really long time and try to bend your left knee as you get up. 6. What do you do if your mouse gets stuck. I’d have him call Jenny Craig, if I were you. Server issues 7. What’s the best protocol to follow when your server is down? Make a beeline for the buffet table faster than Usain Bolt being chased by Darth Vader. 8. What are the symptoms of a computer virus? A stuffed node. 9. What’s malware. Whatever Mal’s spouse tells him to ware, if he knows what’s good for him. 10. What are some of the most popular websites? Behind the couch, next to the oven, under your bed. You know the drill. 11. What is a blog?
A log for the Blue Man Group. 12. Exactly how do you suggest I Google my husband? I’d love to tell you, ma’am, really I would, but alas this is a family newspaper. 13. And finally, what’s a javascript? Boy double double meets girl double double, boy double double loses girl double double, boy double double finds girl double double once more, then loses girl double double yet again and finally, wins girl double double back. After which they both live happily ever after. And presumably set the stage for a sequel.

Coming July 19th to Whistling Wind
Council’s marathon July meeting stretched out for four days last week. It wouldn’t have gone nearly as long as that, were it not for several juicy items irresistible to councillors in an election year: themselves. Council spent much of that time talking about reports from, and the future of, the city’s accountability officers. It extracted an apology from Mayor Rob Ford for robocalls, extracted a few months of salary from Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti and didn’t quite extract Toronto ombudsman Fiona Crean from her job. Each of these debates were extraordinary. The matter of Ford’s apology to Councillor Paul Ainslie was unique, in that Ford did in fact apologize. At the end of the long debate, Ford returned to the council chamber and said sorry for robocalling every house in Ainslie’s Scarborough East ward last year to tell them how he hadn’t consulted with them about his vote against the Scarborough subway, when in fact Ainslie had consulted rather a lot. There wasn’t much at stake:
david nickle the city Ford has not done what the integrity commissioner has asked in the past, and gotten away with it. There was a great deal more at stake in the matter of Mammoliti, who in the end lost three months’ pay over an $80,000 “gift” he received from a fundraiser that the integrity commissioner maintained to be improper. Mammoliti disputes many elements of the integrity commissioner’s report on the matter, but council was unswayed and overwhelmingly voted to effectively take $26,000 from him. This is the first time in Toronto’s history that council has voted to impose a monetary penalty against one of their own. The penalty is somewhat diminished by the fact that it is so much less than the amount of money that Mammoliti received. But council could do no more: three months’ pay is as much penalty as an integrity com-
missioner can recommend and council can impose. Council did the right thing there, and also, in a manner of speaking, in the matter of Crean’s future. A critical mass of councillors, including those stung by her criticism of their work on the Toronto Community Housing board and the Public Appointments Committee, made the prospect of garnering the 30 votes necessary to extend Crean’s appointment impossible. But a simple majority was all it took to punt the decision to 2015. It would have been an awful message to send to accountability officers that their future depended on maintaining good relations with badly behaving councillors. In the end, at least council was able to finish their penultimate council meeting on something resembling an ethical high-ground when it came to understanding their roles and obligation.

Footgolf Comes to Carruther’s Creek
Carruther’s Creek Golf and Country Club is excited to announce that they are the first course in Durham Region, and only the third in Ontario, to offer footgolf. Footgolf is a sport that combines soccer and golf and gives you a really fun day out on the course. The sport originated in Holland and became so popular that it quickly spread throughout Europe. Eventually, it crossed the pond into the United States and has slowly started to come across the border, with 10 courses in Canada now offering footgolf. Footgolf is played on a modified golf course, but instead of using a club and golf ball, participants use their legs and a soccer ball. Most of the rules are similar to golf. For example, if the hole you are playing is a par 3, you must get the ball from the tee into the hole with three kicks to make par. Don’t worry, it’s not a golf ball-sized hole you are trying to fit a soccer ball into! Separate footgolf holes have been placed just off the green and are 21 inches in diameter. A #5 soccer ball is used to play. Footgolfers are also encouraged to have a little fun with their attire. The dress code asks for argyle socks and proper footwear, which includes indoor turf soccer shoes, golf or running shoes. After its launch in mid-July, you will be able to play footgolf on Carruther’s Creek’s Whistling Wind course, an executive par 3. But regular golfers don’t need to worry, as the course will still be open for golf. In fact, both footgolf and golf can be played at the same time. Even within a foursome, you can have a couple of golfers playing with a couple of footgolfers. “The golf world is really behind this new sport,” says Deanne Janes, of Carruther’s Creek Golf and Country Club. “It’s been well-received by golfers and those who have tried it out.” Footgolf promises to be lots of fun and it’s also very affordable to play with no expensive equipment required. The course fees are the same for golfers and those playing footgolf. If you want to brush up on your kicking skills in the off season, Carruther’s Creek offers indoor soccer in the winter. Carruther’s Creek Golf and Country Club is located at 650 Lakeridge Road South (Durham 23 at Bayly) in Ajax. For more information, call (905) 426-GOLF (4653) or visit www.carrutherscreekgolf.ca.

Area councillor agrees Morningside Heights needs a local community centre
NOTICE OF STUDY COMPLETION STOUFFVILLE CORRIDOR RAIL SERVICE EXPANSION Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is helping transform the way the region moves by championing and delivering mobility solutions for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) through its regional transportation plan, The Big Move. Our GO Transit division continues to expand and improve its services to provide more choices for travel across the GTHA, meet increasing customer demand and attract more transit users in the future.
>>>from page 1 organization, said Rogers last week, explaining five of the program graduates, ages 18 to 21, are directors on the group’s board, as are four youth still in the program. “They’re running the business and are kind of my bosses.” But though 3T remains “the best youth program that you’ve never heard of,” and this week started its summer activities, Wednesday to Friday at Brookside Public School from 1 to 4 p.m., Rogers said he’s still looking for sustained core funding.
THE STUDY GO Transit has undertaken a Class Environmental Assessment (EA) and Preliminary Design for the Stouffville railway corridor from the Scarborough Junction in Toronto to Unionville GO Station in Markham to examine the infrastructure needs to expand service along this corridor from Union Station to Mount Joy GO Station. The study identified the appropriate infrastructure improvements of the corridor needed to enhance the quality of service offered to customers and provide new transit options in the eastern GTHA. THE PROCESS This notice signals the completion of the Class EA. The study has been carried out as a Group ‘B’ undertaking as outlined in the GO Transit Class EA (as amended in August 2005).

And the northeastern Scarborough neighbourhood’s lack of youth facilities, which convinced Rogers to keep 3T going as a volunteer, is still the top local complaint. The 3,500-house area west of Rouge Park seems to have more children than ever, and the school on Oasis Boulevard, Rogers said, has three portables now and is renovating to add classrooms on its roof. “The kids are still coming, but we don’t have enough space or funds.” Rogers, who wants to start a youth employment program for the area, said Malvern’s busy community recreation centre is too far away for children in Morningside Heights. The neighbourhood was third on the city’s prospective list for community centres in 2007, when it spent $17 million on seven acres of land off Sewells Road, an approved subdivision site known as Village Securities, because it bordered Rouge Park and was thought to

contain a First Nation village site. Toronto council decided the land could not be used for a community centre, and during the debate Rogers and the now-inactive Morningside Heights Residents’ Association warned against leaving local children and youth with no future place for recreation. The land is not slated to be included in the federal Rouge National Urban Park, and remains as open space. This week, Scarborough-Rouge River Councillor Raymond Cho agreed Morningside Heights needs a community centre but the city has to go through a Toronto-wide assessment process and find the money and location. “I don’t think it’s going to be built in the foreseeable future,” said Cho, who is running for reelection against 10 other candidates in the ward. He said he supports Rogers’ program and made a “token contribution” to it on a visit to Brookside last week. Malvern Family Resource Centre recently completed a headquarters building at Sewells and Littles roads containing a gym and other facilities it has promised to let the community use.

One-year countdown to Pan Am Games in Toronto now underway JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Thousands packed into Nathan Phillips Square on Friday to kick off a one-year countdown to Toronto’s next big chance to host the world. Premier Kathleen Wynne, Mayor Rob Ford and other politicians were on hand as Cisco unveiled a giant clock counting down the days until the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ ParaPan Am Games. Wonderful opportunity The kick-off also marked the start of a two-day celebration in the square, which saw people enjoy live music, sports, games, food and more. “This is a wonderful, wonderful opportunity for our city, for our province and for our country,” Wynne said of the games. Wynne added the games would leave a long-lasting
legacy for Toronto and for its athletes in particular, through the construction of highquality sporting venues. “Ontario led the bid to host the Pan Am Games to showcase Ontario on the world stage and build new community-friendly sporting facilities that will allow our athletes to train right here at home,” she said. Local business “They won’t have to go to other venues to find a velodrome, or to find a pool, or to find a track to practice at because we’re going to have those facilities right here.” Ford received a mixed reception as he welcomed those in attendance at the countdown ceremony. “The games will be an opportunity to display our diverse culture, talents and passion for sports to the rest of the world,” he said. “Local businesses will also be able to benefit from the
economic opportunities the games will bring to this great city.” Pan American Sports Organization vice president and three-time Olympian Ivar Sisniega noted the games will bring the top athletes from North and South America to compete in 36 sports. He added the world’s eyes will be on the city as these athletes vie for gold and said his organization is looking forward to seeing cheering crowds in Toronto and the surrounding area. “Besides being the city with the most polite people, we want to see it be the city with the most enthusiastic people,” he said. The countdown celebration at Nathan Phillips Square also included hundreds of children from local day camps participating in a variety of sports.

Scarborough pet owners reminded of dangers of hot cars Police and the Ontario SPCA are urging motorists not to leave their pets unattended in vehicles. In an effort to spread that message, 43 Division officers handed out literature and window stickers in the parking lot of the Scarborough Town Centre Wednesday, July 9, afternoon. Toronto police receives hundreds of calls for pets
locked in vehicles every year. Police said that a dog’s normal body temperature is 39 C and that a temperature of 41 C can be withstood for only a short time before there is irreparable brain damage or death. Anyone seeing a pet left unattended in a vehicle should call 416-310-SPCA or police at 416-808-2222.
However, if the pet is in distress, 911 should be called.

strike won’t impact streetcars: TTC
A str ike by workers at Bombardier’s Thunder Bay plant will not impact the immediate rollout of new streetcars, says the TTC. Nine hundred workers at the plant – which manufactures the Toronto Rocket subway cars as well as the new streetcar fleet about to make its debut on the 510 Spadina line – walked off the job Monday, July 14, after failing to come to an agreement on a new contract. It’s the first job action at the plant since a three-day strike in 2011. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross declined to comment on the job action. He said the TTC was still committed to launching the first of the new streetcars on Spadina as of Sunday, Aug.31. Accessible taxi drivers rally Striking accessible taxi drivers took the TTC to task this week for planned wage cuts. The cab drivers represented by the iTaxiworkers Association, who have

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT been on strike since the first week of July, held separate rallies at Toronto City Hall, TTC headquarters and Wheel-Trans offices Monday, July 14. The drivers say they will lose $1,500 per month because their new contract with the TTC to provide Wheel-Trans service imposes a per-kilometre cut of 36 cents, reduced from the previous wagerate of $2.86 per kilometre. They say such a drop is “incomprehensible” given rising fuel and maintenance costs. The TTC maintains even with the cuts, the drivers are receiving a fair wage. backs transit funding wCivicAction

A west-end subway closure is planned for this weekend. From Saturday July 19 to Sunday July 20 there is no service between Kipling and Islington stations, located on the BloorDanforth line, also known as Line 2. During the closure, westbound trains will return east at Islington, and riders seeking to get to Kipling can use a shuttle bus service provided by the TTC. There is planned service to Jane Station for accessible riders. Service is scheduled to resume Monday morning.

‘Scarborough son’ Peter Zezel remembered at street-naming MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com
his time, and his love of sports and his community “knew no bounds,” Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson said before a sign was unveiled officially on the new road between freshlybuilt townhouses west of Midland Avenue. Born in Scarborough, Zezel was a direct descendent of the area’s founding pioneers David and Mary Thomson, as
Peter Zezel was a great “Scarborough son,” and a street called Zezel Way will preserve the memory of a man whose talent and zest for life impressed all who knew him, family and friends of the late NHL player heard Friday. Zezel was generous with
well as of a Yugoslavian immigrant, Peter Zezel Sr., who could not have imagined, his daughter Neda said, a street bearing his family name. Her brother’s death in 2009 at age 44 made the moment of the street’s dedication bittersweet, she said during the ceremony, but added that, “Peter would have loved it. Peter and our family will always appreciate it.”
The small crowd contained other members of Zezel’s family and former teammates, including former Toronto Maple Leafs Wendel Clark and Mark Osborne, and George Spezza, who played with Zezel on the Toronto Marlies. Clark said Scarborough remained a “comfort zone” for Zezel, called Zez by his fellow Leafs. “He was a home-
town guy.” Their friendship began earlier: when Zezel played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Clark, drafted by the Leafs and away from Saskatchewan at age 18, shared the same agent, and found himself staying in Zezel’s own room. “I was a direct enemy living in his house.” Later, the men were roommates and Zezel, on a line
with Osborne, helped send the Leafs to the Conference finals in 1993 and 1994. “We had some good runs, a lot of fun,” recalled Clark, a former Leaf captain who said Zezel, after retiring, was great with children as a coach. Zezel attended Birchcliff Public School and Birchmount Park Collegiate. For more on this story, go to www.scarboroughmirror.com

The new campus houses the college’s five faculties of business, technology, healthcare, law and supply chain. “We are overjoyed about our new space! Our new campus is in a great location to service residents in the Scarborough community. Previously we were located in a mall as one of many services. We are now in a much more independent location, which allows the staff and students to feel at home,” said Allison Hunter, Scarborough Campus director. the mirror looks at the toronto zoo’s efforts to increase the blanding’s turtle population
our exclusive look

Julia Phillips tends to the Blanding’s turtles in the Head Start nursery at the Toronto Zoo. The turtles, which are a threatened species, are being released into Rouge Park ponds in an attempt to help boost population numbers.

P
ushing through shoulder-high plants off a trail in Scarborough – goldenrod, daisy fleabane, sunflowers – a group from the Toronto Zoo and Rouge Park reaches a pond with lily pads and two halfsunken wire cages, labelled: “Sensitive research project. Do not disturb.” Julia Phillips gets into chestwaders, and prepares to open the back doors. Somewhere out there is Colin, one of only six Blanding’s turtles known to be loose and alive in the Rouge River Valley – that is, until this moment. Turtles, unlike animals with shorter lifespans, are “still living the past,” said Phillips, who runs the zoo’s
Adopt-A-Pond program. There may be turtles in the valley so old they survived Hurricane Hazel in 1954, and were there as a municipal garbage dump opened, filled and closed, and while suburban homes were built nearby. Threatened species But there are too few Blanding’s turtles – a threatened species in Ontario with a helmet-shaped shell and a bright yellow chin and neck – left in the Rouge to continue on their own. “They’re late to maturity, just like us,” said Bob Johnson, the zoo’s curator of reptiles and amphibians, who started looking for turtles in the valley in 1982. Near the river’s mouth, Johnson spotted three – which vanished in “three

large plops off a log into the water” – he was pretty sure were Blanding’s turtles. Two decades later, Adopt-A-Pond brought in a turtle expert who caught three Blanding’s turtles in the same place – probably the same trio Johnson had found – and all three were fitted with radio transmitters. There are ways to catch turtles in a muddy pond: “You can either feel them with your feet, that’s called puddling,” Johnson said. “You can use a pole; we call it probing. When you hear a hollow thump, you’ve got a turtle.” But Blanding’s, “the
most wary of turtles,” will pitch themselves into water when a human gets within 500 metres of a basking spot. To catch other Blanding’s turtles, researchers had to rig up nets basking turtles would fall into. In 2005, Colin O’Neill, a restoration co-ordinator for Friends of the Rouge Watershed found a juvenile Blanding’s turtle in a wetland created near the old dump – a place researchers hadn’t thought to look. Colin the turtle – the name has stuck, though experts are now convinced the creature, radio-tracked ever since, is female – had beat fearful odds just to

reach the age of three or so. Though they can live to 100, Blanding’s turtles, when they hatch, are tiny and vulnerable. Raccoons, foxes, coyotes, skunks, crows and other predators eat the eggs or toonie-sized hatchlings.
“I’ve even seen seagulls pick up a hatchling in their mouth,” said Phillips, adding it’s only when turtles reach a certain size that they’re “not just an easy snack for something.” Different populations of Blanding’s turtles in Ontario adapted slowly and precisely to their environments, but only a long-lived turtle produces offspring, so when a mature adult is killed by a car on a road, the loss is greater, Johnson said. It’s also why six Blanding’s turtles in the Rouge aren’t enough. “You need hundreds of turtles every year, because the selection process is so ruthless.” Johnson, who prefers a First Nation name for the Blanding’s, “The Turtle with >>>local, page 23

Above left, the Toronto Zoo’s Julia Phillips prepares to release one of 10 Blanding’s turtles into the wetlands at Rouge Park recently. The turtles will carry a temporary transmitter and antenna. Above, Phillips opens one of the cages where the turtles have been getting accustomed to living in the pond. Top right, a Blanding’s turtle hatches from one of the Toronto Zoo’s eggs in this photo courtesy of the zoo.
Local volunteers take part in annual Turtle Tally >>>from page 22 the Sun Shining on its Neck,” has been with the zoo – which turns 40 officially this August – since a year before it opened. Each year working with the turtles brings new questions, he said. Colin, for instance, always overwinters with other turtles in the same wetland, but researchers don’t really know why, or what happens to Colin if that wetland changes. Johnson draws hope from continuing work to expand the wetlands suitable for turtles in and around Rouge Park, where the handful of Blanding’s hang on. “This park has shown they aren’t doomed,” he
said. To bring the species’ population closer to 100, the zoo created a Head Start centre, a converted shower room with staff funded through Earth Rangers, an environmental group with an educational program for children, Bring Back the Wild, reaching millions of Canadians. Eggs hatched Eggs found in farmer’s fields near Brantford over two successive years hatched in incubators at the centre, one set to a warmer temperature producing only Blanding’s females, and one, colder, for males. By late last month, the
tanks under heating lamps held only year-old hatchlings – 10 two-year-olds had already moved to the cages in the pond, there to learn how to live in the muck and catch food, from mosquito larvae to duckweed as turtles do. The release pond was one where Colin “already hangs out,” and each hatchling will be tracked to see whether they mimic Colin, and if they survive. Reaching into the cage, Phillips came up with a turtle, scraping off plants to reveal the transmitter suck to its shell with epoxy. “That is puddling at its best – with your hands,” she said. Phillips lets one hatchling, and then another, dis-
appear into the dark water before the door latches are opened. “It feels really good, actually, because it’s been a long time coming.” Asked what Colin might think of the company, or competition, Phillips said she doesn’t think the juvenile Blanding’s will fret at all. Hatchlings on the move She was right. Within days, three of the 10 hatchlings had moved to adjacent ponds and, a zoo staffer reported last week, the turtle named Colin made its way to the release site and “is now in the same pond as the baby turtles of the same species.” Whether the Blanding’s
and other sensitive creatures can survive for another century in the emerging federal Rouge Park may depend on educating its visitors and nearby residents. More turtles in the park means more chances for mortality as various species cross roads. Pam Veinotte, first supervisor of the Rouge National Urban Park, said it’s installing signs to make motorists understand they must slow down. Future road projects may allow wildlife passages, she said, and the park can use seasonal closures to prevent interaction between turtles and humans. “What keeps people excited is they know we’re
doing something to help.” Enforcement staff and knowledgeable visitors are watching the area to make sure its turtles don’t wind up on a restaurant menu – as conservation officers found in a Scarborough restaurant fined last year for having 31 spiny softshell turtles, another protected Ontario species. More than 1,000 trained volunteers in the province are part of the zoo’s Turtle Tally program, reporting sightings, roadkill and changes in their areas. “It’s really contagious, the impact that it has,” said Phillips.

Scarborough girls win U.S. basketball tourney A Grade 8 Scarborough girls basketball team with plenty of hardware already from Ontario provincial championships has also added an American national title to their growing collection. The Scarborough Lady Blues won the Youth Basketball of America’s national championship, which wrapped up earlier this month in Orlando. The team won the July 5 championship game 49-27 over the Marietta Starz from Georgia. It capped off a perfect six-win tournament for the Blues including a 46-35 semifinal win over Baton Rouge Tigers, on top of four preliminary round wins. The team’s point guard, Keishana Washington from Pickering, was selected as tourney MVP. The high flyiing Scarborough team earned the silver medal at the Ontario Basketall Association provincial championships this past spring. It marked their fourth straight medal, winning bronze the previous year on the heels of two gold medals – all in the top division. Coached by Brian Breedy, other team members include Brianna Breedy, Sabree Thomas, Kylee O’Hara, Julia Kelly, Wallace Spartaro, Laiya Johnston and Tamoiya Eldemire.
