There’s fresh hope the City of Toronto is close to finishing negotiations with a private company to restore and reopen the historic Guild Inn. The city chose Dynamic Hospitality and Entertainment Group in April 2014 to operate the inn, closed and decaying since 2001, as a restaurant and banquet hall. Negotiations over the deal, now said to be down to a few issues, have dragged on, delaying a restoration and expansion of the inn building city officials hoped would begin this year.

Dynamic’s president, however, said he thinks the outstanding issues with the city may be resolved within two weeks. “Progress has been made, but it’s a very, very sensitive site,” Sam D’Uva said in an interview last week. “We’re very close. Very close doesn’t mean it’s done.” Dynamic intends to demolish later additions to the inn, leaving the original structure, known as the Bickford Residence, intact. It will then >>>GUILD, page 17

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Omar Khadr was tortured in a place beyond the reach of international law for a decade, and we as Canadians did nothing, his lawyer says. “ We have all participated in abandoning him,” Dennis Edney told an audience Saturday at the Islamic Foundation of Toronto in Scarborough. A Canadian citizen, Khadr, at age 15, was wounded and captured in Afghanistan in a 2002 battle that left an American medic dead. As an al-Qaeda fighter thought to have killed the medic with a grenade, Khadr was sent to the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where Edney said he was subject to a “smorgasbord of abuse” for 10 years, which included waterboarding, hanging in a crucifixion pose, and using Khadr’s head to mop up urine. ‘Torture’ “Imagine your own country being involved in the torture of a child,” said Edney, who charged Canadian authorities, despite their assurances Khadr was “being treated well,” knew of everything happening to him. Khadr, released on bail by an Alberta judge last month despite the federal govern-

ment’s opposition, remains a polarizing figure in Canada. His family – several members of which were on hand Saturday to hear Edney speak – were taken to Pakistan and Afghanistan by Khadr’s father, Ahmad Saeed Khadr, a reputed al-Qaeda financier killed by a U.S. strike in 2003. The remaining Khadrs, after they returned to Canada, were infamous. But Edney said Omar Khadr – despite his decade at Guantanamo and three years in Canadian prisons after that – is a different person than Canadians thought they’d see, and doing well. “He’s survived the hell and become more human,” said
the Scottish-born lawyer, who is sheltering Khadr at his Edmonton home as a condition of his bail. Edney said Khadr doesn’t know if he threw the fatal grenade or not, but he didn’t want to plead guilty at Guantanamo to killing the medic because, he said, “Canadians will view me as a terrorist.” He finally did enter a guilty plea, said Edney, because he convinced his client “you’ll never get out of here” otherwise. “There was not one single piece of evidence to indicate he had thrown a hand grenade at anybody,” he added, alleging the U.S. military relied on testimony from an interroga-
tor who tortured Khadr into a confession. Edney also said none of his witnesses were allowed at Khadr’s military tribunal. “It was just a fake trial.” Guantanamo, Edney said, is a “hellish” place, where only six of the more than 800 detainees were ever charged with crimes. But while other Western countries asked for the return of their nationals, Canada chose not to, he said. “The message given by (a then-Liberal government) to Americans was, ‘We don’t care. Do what you want to him.’” In 2008, a few opposition MPs, including Liberal human rights critic Irwin Cotler, declared Khadr was a former child soldier whose imprisonment violated international law. Lived in Scarborough His family lived in Scarborough after their return to Canada, and a group in 2012 put up posters in the neighbourhood showing Khadr’s face beside the burning Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre. “Will this convicted Islamic terrorist be your neighbour?” they asked. Khadr today, Edney said, has a “destroyed shoulder,” is blind in one eye and still has shrapnel in the other.
He speaks to his family by phone, has a 10 p.m. curfew, and wears a security bracelet, but loves to cycle and is “avaricious for education,” said Edney, who returned to Edmonton this week preparing to fight a federal appeal of Khadr’s release. “The government wishes to put him back in the bottle. It’s not going to happen.” Edney, a harsh critic of Stephen Harper, called the prime minister “frightened of civil liberties,” and charged Harper, like former U.S. President George W. Bush, is exploiting fear of terrorism for political gain: “Fear, fear, fear, fear, because I need votes.” Edney said it’s up to ordinary Canadians to do something about that. “Read. Move. Do something. Challenge these bloody guys in Ottawa,” he said. Shaykh Yusuf Badat, imam of the Nugget Avenue mosque, said Saturday’s forum was a chance to let Edney, who spent a lot of his own money to defend Khadr, “know he is not alone.” Badat urged members of the mosque to sign up to support Khadr and other people being treated unjustly. “We have to put our money where our mouth is,” he said.

Improved transportation should be a Pan Am legacy I
magine a legacy from the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games where people get around this city in a more efficient fashion. Given the preparations being made for the Games’ traffic influx, it’s not an unrealistic hope. Hundreds of thousands of additional people are expected in the city and the Greater Toronto Area for the Games next month, so it’s important for everyone to do some transportation planning. This challenge on our roads will be in addition to other planned road construcour view tion projects during the summer months. Toronto stands Key to this planning process – for residents, businesses and to benefit after visitors – will be understanding Games are over the tools and resources available to help get around the city. This week a web-based transportation planner, accessible at www.2015gamestripplanner.ca, was launched by the province. It provides real-time traffic details, such as road closures, traffic speeds, HOV lane locations, a booking feature for accessible parking spots and more. An app is also available for download on Apple, Android and Blackberry devices. That announcement comes a day after GO Transit unveiled its enhanced service plans for the Games. These include more service on routes that serve major events and that Games tickets can be used as valid fare on GO on the day of that event. There’s an additional opportunity from all of this transportation preparation that stretches well into the future: applying what’s being learned. Traffic is not a new issue to the city. What successes can be shared from these preparations? What lessons can be learned? We have to study the traffic patterns that unfold during the Games. We have to measure the impact of initiatives such as HOV lanes. Surely there are aspects of the web trip planner that can be co-opted for travelling within the city after the Games are done? With the transportation planning, there are additional potential benefits for the city – not just for future special events, but for day-to-day life.

A tastefest of things to come this summer I dropped by Dundas West Fest on Saturday, my first fest of the season. As usual, I expect to take in many more between now and September. For those new to Toronto looking for things to do on summer weekends, if you take in an event with fest in the title, you’re in the right place, hands down. Hands up, too, for that matter. Feet also down and up. And in and out. And not necessarily in that order, either. Fests have that kind of effect on limbs. A close second for summer events that guarantee a good time are ones that include the word festival in their name. Festivals typically have established roots. Fests tend to be of the newer variety. But, suffice it to say, it’s a veritable feast of fests and feastival of festivals this time of year. (I let suffice say it for a good reason. I wouldn’t want anybody thinking I walk around saying feastival.) There are several other
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY words that also pop up with regularity during the season that assure big crowds. Take rib, for example. Just don’t try and take mine. Especially at a ribfest. An event with the word taste in the moniker has “don’t dare miss it” written all over it. People who have lived here for awhile automatically think of the original, the Taste of the Danforth, whenever they hear the word taste. But there are new taste entries being introduced every year. Or is that entrees? Whatever. By the way, for those hearing the title for the first time, at these events you don’t literally taste the street, you sample the foods of the area restaurants. Which is a relief. Tar and cement are just not my cup of tea. I wouldn’t want them in a double double either. Speaking of street, any-
time a street name is in the event title, mark the day on your calendar. They’re the source of many great summer parties, such as Salsa on St. Clair. We’re talking dancing, not eating. It’s not about watching diners spilling sauce on the street. The only spilling to speak of is when the dancing inevitably spills out into the surrounding neighbourhoods. If you hear the word park in an event title you can be sure a good time will be had by all there. Same goes for fair. Ditto for picnic. All three are always a great source of Thisfests and Thatfests. Just thinking about the latter makes me wish it was already the weekend. There’s nothing better than Thatfests. The word zoo is also a popular one this time of year. Singer/songwriter Paul Simon says someone told him, “It’s all happening at the zoo.” He could have been talking about all our zoos, when he wrote that, because every
summer after I visit them, I reply, “I do believe it, I do believe it’s true.” You’ll also hear the word Ex over and over. It’s not referring to somebody’s now insignificant other. Ex is short for Exhibition, which is long for CNE, our amusement park that is on many a Torontonian’s summer list of things to do. All you have to do is just pick a word, any word I mentioned, and if you take the time to check out an event attached to it, though you may not feel like the world is your oyster while you’re there, you’ll definitely feel like the city is. Speaking of which, I’m going to rocking Oysterfest down by the lake this weekend and I can’t wait. Just to see those little dears come out of their shells is worth the price of admission. Council will have to deal with budget shortfall at some point Remember the 2015 budget? It’s been a few months now, and there’s been a lot of water under the elevated highway, as it were, so it’s understandable if you don’t. The takeaway: property tax increases were kept reasonable, in spite of the fact Toronto was hit with an $86-million shortfall due to housing costs downloaded by the provincial government. Council dealt with that shortfall with some cuts, and a $60-million “loan” from the city’s capital investment program: money that will have to be replenished over the next several years. As dubious councillors voted to approve the scheme, Mayor John Tory promised that soon he would be offering up a plan as to how best to pay back that loan. Two per cent cuts to spending across all departments was one of the ideas bandied about. This week, Toronto’s budget committee received

and passed on Tory’s more refined plan, which amounted to not much more than that. Tory sent a letter to the committee, asking that city departments and city-funded agencies like the TTC be asked to find two per cent of savings. The letter is not legally binding but it’s clear enough as far as it goes. Tory goes on, however, to ask for some other things: he would like to make sure that the property tax increase remains at or below the rate of inflation, and wants the city to continue to fund public transit in an aggressive way. Oh, and these efficiencies mustn’t lead to any reductions in service. On Tuesday, the budget committee had a look at the letter and sent it off to city

staff. As budget chief Gary Crawford noted, these kinds of letters have come out of every mayor’s office since Mel Lastman. Crawford admitted after the meeting that over the next few years council will probably have to figure out some other measures in order to finally balance the budget. Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Gord Perks put things more bluntly: “There will come a day when we have a stark choice between reducing the services we deliver to people and finding a way to pay for them,” he said. “Last term, we had a mayor incapable of facing that choice. I’m hoping this council is a little more adult because the longer we put this off the worse it gets.” I guess we’ll see how bad it gets over the next few years.

health poverty refugees and the underinsured can find treatment at clinic

T
here will be 113 little flags in the front room of the centre this weekend, and each flag stands for at least one story starting with feelings of fear, embarassment and desperation. These are the country flags of thousands of newcomers who had no medical insurance in Toronto – rejected refugee claiments, immigrants so new they didn’t qualify yet, temporary workers, undocumented people. All unwanted by a medical system that wasn’t paid to take care of them. The volunteer clinic in Scarborough that did give them care finally has, after 15 years, a good base from which to work on a problem most of us never thought about. “This problem found us,” said Dr. Paul Caulford, a family physician who started the clinic in a church basement with Jennifer D’Andrade, a public health nurse. They thought governments would fix the problem, but instead the clinic got busier. Cuts to federal care for refugee claimants in 2012 hit it like a tsunami, Caulford recalled, but the volunteers stuck by their goal: give these new Canadians health care, so they can have a fighting chance. “What sense does it make to leave them unhealthy? It leaves Canada unhealthy,” Caulford said last week at the Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care. The former manse of Knox Presbyterian Church at 4158 Sheppard Ave. E.,

Above, Dr. Paul Caulford, centre, helps Mark Gomes, left, and John D’Andrade assemble a cabinet at the new Canadian Centre For Refugee and Immigrant Health care clinic Friday. Below, the new home of the Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care at 4158 Sheppard Ave. E.
VISION:
‘All newcomers to Canada receive the healthcare they require, unstintingly, and without judgment of their circumstances.’
MISSION:
‘To provide humanitarian medical treatment and assistance to those new to Canada who find themselves medically uninsured.’ the CCRIHC (www.ccrihc. ca) is the latest incarnation of the volunteer clinic, and it hosts its first open house this weekend. It was D’Andrade
who noticed it, a house on a TTC route west of Midland Avenue, visible, homey, unintimidating. The sort of place the volunteers had wanted for
years. As several people nearby used tools to assemble Ikea furniture, Caulford praised the building’s warmth, and
“the dignity of it.” Behind the clinic’s latest flag, that of Uruguay, is the story of an elderly couple from that country, here for 10 years as grandparents. They clean offices, pay taxes, but the man has lymphoma, a treatable cancer, and recently needed an MRI scan, for which he must pay $1,000. Diana Nelson, the clinic’s former operations manager, remembered seeing the couple walk into the clinic, which is presently on Markham Road. They just looked frightened, she said. Sometimes another form of help – such as the infant car seats needed by a young couple from Afghanistan who arrived in Canada with no coverage, the woman pregnant with twins – is as important to the patients as any medical care. That couple had also brought a young boy, the man’s cousin, shot multiple times in an attack that had killed his immediate family. “You can’t help but be moved by the struggles that these families face,” said Anita Francis, a registered nurse and a clinic
volunteer for four years. Francis knows some people think the clinic’s patients are “looking for a free ride.” She’s seen how grateful they are, how eager to come back and offer help when they can. “They’re just glad to be safe. They can’t wait to be self-sufficient.” A group of teachers bring toys. Doctors donate pharmaceuticals and dressings. Some people bring food. “We somehow have a mini-food bank,” said Nelson. As the CCRIHC, which has applied for charitable status, the clinic will provide not just medical and dental care but services ranging from foot care and literacy to midwifery and a pediatric outreach program, trying to reach not just the uninsured of Toronto but what Caulford calls the underinsured. “There’s a new poverty in Canada called health poverty,” he said. “This is a medical bank to help health poverty.” The converted manse can open because a $100,000 planned donation from the Rotary Club of Scarborough, representing 14 years of August holiday Ribfest proceeds and legacies from former Rotarians, paid for equipment and fixtures and furnishings. Last week, several members said the clinic is an excellent fit for the club’s “Service Above Self” motto. One, Gene Burns, said he toured the clinic “to check ’em out, see if they’re real. The more I experienced, the more impressed I became.”

seats mark UP Express launch wEmpty The Union Pearson (UP) Express officially launched last week to great fanfare, and empty seats. Saturday marked the first day of service for UP, which promises to operate four trains an hour for nearly 20 hours every day. That means one million fewer car trips to Toronto’s Pearson airport in UP’s first year of operation alone, according to Metrolinx. But even with free rides taken into account, many UP trains were half-empty, leaving some to wonder if the service will be viable in the long run. TO act ON NOISE WALL GRAFFITI wMETROLINX
Metrolinx is promising to deal with complaints of graffiti adorning the new UP sound walls. The walls are up in sections along the Georgetown South rail corridor and are intended to reduce the noise and vibration from diesel-powered UP trains. Last Friday, activist Kevin Putnam posted a picture showing tags on the
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT sound walls erected along the West Toronto Railpath, which he claimed have been there for weeks. This week, Metrolinx executive Gord Troughton confirmed arrangements were made for a private contractor to remove the graffiti from the noise walls, although he didn’t provide a time frame for completing the work. LEARN MORE ABOUT COMPLETE STREETS The idea of a street acting as more than just a way to get around has gained traction among civic planners. Now the city is hoping to get public feedback for how it can create future Complete Streets which take into account the needs of all users, such as people who walk, bicycle, take transit or drive. They also consider other uses like sidewalk cafés, street furniture, street trees, utilities, and stormwater management. The city is planning to
w
launch an online survey in mid-June seeking input for Complete Street guidelines. It’s also hosting an open house at the Central YMCA, at 20 Grosvenor St. next Thursday, plus organizing “moving conversations” about the matter in North York and Etobicoke. Visit www.toronto.ca/ completestreets under fire for hiking rates wUBER
The taxi alternative Uber took heat after it significantly raised fares during Monday’s TTC meltdown. Customers who ordered an Uber vehicle off their mobile devices – after it was reported the entire TTC subway system was down due to a power outage – reported fare hikes far exceeding the usual rate. That’s the usual operating policy for Uber which claims charging higher rates during busy periods “incentivize” drivers to want to join the ridesharing service.

The group, which has 30,000 paid lifetime members and was until recently called the Chinese Professionals Association of Canada, has declared itself a “crosscultural” organization.

It does a lot for our prosperity.” Yang said world-class athletes, including Pan Am competitors, are invited to the party, but their identity will be a secret for now. “That will be the thrilling part, to see who’s coming.” As well as sports - including soccer, basketball, fencing, yoga, and tug of war - the event features multicultural foods and performances. AGM PUBLIC NOTICE
Furniture bank opens doors ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
Our theme for this annual general meeting is STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY SUPPORTS
Low-income Scarborough residents now have somewhere to turn to in order to furnish their homes for free. The new and improved Scarborough Furniture Bank, run out of a 4,500-square-foot showroom at 1960 Ellesmere Rd., officially opened its doors June 2. The facility operates three days a week and can serve 1,000 families per year. The service is targeted at new immigrants, refugees, people leaving a shelter, the poor and those who experienced bed bugs. “Bed bugs are becoming more prevalent especially in Scarborough, mainly in the highrises,” said Nancy Bolton of Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities, which operates the furniture bank. The service costs $200,000 a year to run and is funded by the city.
This year we are pleased to welcome Leela Prasaud as our keynote speaker to our 2015 AGM. Leela will share with us her heart wrenching story of caring for her mother’s complex health issues during her end of life. As she tells her story we strengthen our commitment to supporting our communities.
We invite you to attend our 2014/2015 Annual General Meeting!
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24, 2015 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm the Hub – Mid-Scarborough 2660 Eglinton Avenue East (at Brimley Road) Room M03/M04

Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities (SCHC) community engagement manager Nancy Bolton takes part in the official opening of the SCHC Scarborough Furniture Bank at its Ellemere Road location recently.
Bolton said most clients are referred to the furniture bank from housing workers from various community agencies. “We’re able to provide them with furnishings for every room in their household,” she said. “And we even include housewares.” Beds are the most popular item with people who visit the furniture bank, says Christine
All community members are encouraged to attend, hear Leela’s moving story and learn more about SCHC’s accomplishments over the past year. Current members will receive a membership package including voting rights at the meeting.
Hewitt, also of SCHC. “Some people are in a bachelor (apartment) or they’re in a room, so there’s no room for a couch,” she added. The previous model of the Scarborough Furniture Bank operated only one day a week out of storage units and served 226 families last year.
Please RSVP your attendance to Cathy Gell at cgell@schcontario.ca or call 416-847-4093.

Scarborough Village, as a neighbourhood, has seen several rounds of community-building initiatives over the last decade. Now it’s seeing another, called “Recipe for Community,” which the non-profit Toronto Foundation launched on June 3. First tried in the downtown neighbourhood of Alexandra Park, Recipe is a mix of skillbuilding and other programs the Foundation says are meant to “create new opportunities and foster a sense of belonging and pride.” The Foundation is contributing $100,000 and the City of Toronto and several other partners will also contribute money or resources. For Scarborough Village, an area centred on the intersection of Eglinton Avenue and Markham Road, Recipe will mean an outdoor arts and movie theatre outside the Scarborough Village Recreation Centre, where the launch was staged. Bicycle mechanics will be one of the skills taught inside the recreation centre. “It may sound like a small thing but it’s something young people really connect with,” Foundation CEO Rahul Bhardwaj said last week. Scarborough Village has gotten some attention since a city and United Way Strong Neighbourhoods Task Force identified it in 2005 as one of the Toronto neighbourhoods which were “‘hot spots’ of high need and low infrastructure,” and therefore in need of investment. Many programs provided to Scarborough Village, however, ended after the grants funding them ran out. Bhardwaj, in an interview, said the Recipe programs are funded for a year, and can look for sustainable funding after that to keep going. “There is leadership around it now, which is important, and there’s funding around it now,” he said. “I left (the launch) with a real sense of

optimism.” Several of the initiatives try to teach skills ranging from carpentry to food preparation and mural painting. For example, there’s a workshop on making Bengali jewelry at the recreation centre starting at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 13.

Guild plan will feature new banquet hall, gazebo space >>>from page 1 build a 800-person-capacity hall on the Bickford’s west side and a gazebo-like ceremonial space on the east. The plan, explained at a community meeting last July, has the blessing of both the Toronto Preservation Board and Scarborough Preservation Panel. But a lack of information since last year’s announce-
ment, and the complicated nature of Guild Park, an 88-acre green space on the Scarborough Bluffs involving 15 different agencies or groups in its management, has frustrated park supporters, said John Mason, president of Friends of Guild Inn and Gardens. “It’s very difficult to get anything done or even know how to get things done,”
Mason said. Mason said Paul Ainslie, the local councillor, and Mayor John Tory have supported his volunteer group’s call for a master plan governing the entire park, and its request for some sort of “park commissioner” to take charge at the Guild. Mason said Guildwood residents also want “meaningful and ongoing public
engagement” in the process of revitalizing the park, including a series of new public meetings. The city last year hired a consultant to “refresh” a 2009 plan for the “cultural precincts” around the inn, a plan that proposed improvements to the park worth millions. But though work on the cultural plan began in
November, there has been no public meeting or consultation on it yet, Mason said. “I’m very curious about why that is.” The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority is meanwhile studying the Scarborough Waterfront Project, which would complete a shoreline trail to below the bluffs at Guild Park, and has submitted the terms of
reference for public review this month. Ainslie couldn’t be reached for comment this week, but Antonette DiNovo, his executive assistant, said the councillor will host a public meeting on the Guild as soon as negotiations with Dynamic are done.

Students at Blessed Mother Teresa lend a helping hand Students at Scarborough’s Blessed Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School have been doing their part to help out the community this spring. During Catholic Education Week recently, the students prepared bagged meals and handdelivered them to those in need on the streets of Toronto. The students were led in a walking tour downtown by teachers Alexandra Bolcic and Christopher Pereira. The tour saw the students visit the Homeless Memorial and Nathan Phillips Square. On the tour, students approached the homeless and offered them the food and drinks they had prepared. Also this spring, leadership students from the school showed their thanks to those who serve the community. Students visited the 42 Division police station, Toronto Fire Station 213, Rouge Valley Health System Centenary Hospital and their local crossing guard to say thanks and to deliver them homemade cookies and muffins.

Shout Sister! fundraiser for Scarborough Women’s Centre Toronto South East Shout Sister! choir is following its annual tradition by giving back to the community with a fundraising concert. This year’s recipient is the Scarborough Women’s Centre. “We think it’s a lovely gesture on their part to support other women who want to become successful in their lives,” Lynda Kosowan, from the Scarborough Women’s Centre said. “Each year they choose a charity they would like to support and this year we were lucky and they chose us.” The choir’s joyful singing style was not familiar to her, she said, but with a little research she found the uplifting spirit of the voices resonates with the audience. Shout Sister! perform a variety of songs from pop to Motown to folk to a touch of country and blues.
YOUR
Nancy Greig from Shout Sister! said, “Our choir likes to give back to the community. So at the end of each year, which ends in June, we have a fundraider for our community and we try to chose a charity that is involved with women, children and families.” The choir is a “warm, welcoming and safe community for women. Although we are not a reading choir, we sing beautifully and we have a lot of fun,” Greig said. Scarborough Women’s Centre is a resource centre providing information, education and support services to assist in the transition to economic and emotional independence. Tickets, for the all ages show, are available from choir members or at the door for $10. Children aged eight years old and under are free. The concert takes place Tuesday, June 16, at 7:30 p.m.

Scarborough’s Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate girls rugby team, completely unheralded with a ranking of 16th out of 16 teams at the provincial girls rugby championship tournament held in Mississauga June 1 to 3, nearly proved giant slayers. They certainly had the biggest giant on the ground and down to its very last breath. Quite frankly, the vaunted Oakville Trafalgar High School team, who ended up following through on their number-one ranking by winning the gold medal at the tournament, which improved upon last season’s silver medal, can thank their lucky stars they even got out of that first game alive. After the two teams were tied 17-17 after regulation time – with Oakville Trafalgar tying it up on a last second score just to send it into overtime – it came down to the fifth, sudden death overtime penalty kick. Oakville
Trafalgar’s sailed through. Mowat’s hit the crossbar. “It was that close. So they won,” understated Mowat coach Susan Underwood. As far as Mowat players were concerned, they didn’t come out of nowhere, even though it was their first visit to the provincial championships in the 15-aside game. Graduating senior Genna Downey-Ging noted that Mowat “has won four consecutive fall (seven-aside) city championships, and in the fall of 2013 we also won the provincial game.” That win actually got them invited to play in April 2014 in the Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament in Fukuoka Japan. Me a n w h i l e, Oa k v i l l e Trafalagar went on to win the next three games for their gold medal. As for Mowat, you just won’t believe what happened to them next. By this time their little secret was out: they are now a force in the 15-aside game. So no one was taking them for granted when they regrouped to play their open-
ing consolation round game which they ended up losing to eighth-seeded St. Roch Catholic Secondary School from Brampton – and you guessed it – on overtime penalty kicks, after neither team could score during regulation time. Mowat closed out the tournament with a win over 15th seeded St. Stephen Secondary School from Bowmanville 36-0. Also at OFSAA, S c a r b o r o u g h’s Bl e s s e d Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School also gave a good accounting of itself at the girls rugby championship despite being seeded on the bottom half, in ninth spot. They beat the above noted St. Roch 24-0 in the opener (hence dropping St. Roch into the consolation pool where they hooked up with Mowat). Newman then ran into Oakville Trafalgar who won 34-14. That put Newman into the consolation round where they lost 27-24 to seventhranked Stouffville and 19-12 to sixth ranked Kitchener.
