Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse, left, meets with young fans during the Toronto District School Board elementary track and field championships at Birchmount Stadium Tuesday.
Sprinter De Grasse inspires young athletes ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com There was plenty of mutual admiration at the Toronto District School Board’s elementary track and field championships Tuesday. Mayor John Tory joined Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse to cheer on the young athletes. The competitors, in turn, admired De Grasse. “He’s really my idol. I always look up to him when I’m running,” said Grade 6 John G.
Diefenbaker Public School student Mathesh Sritharan, who finished fifth in hurdles. “He signed my shirt, and he gave me high fives. It’s just a great honour to meet him.” About 1,700 students in grades 4 to 8 took part in the championships, held at Birchmount Stadium in southwest Scarborough. “I just want to congratulate you guys for making it this far. You guys are very talented and hard workers,” De Grasse told the students.
The Scarborough-born athlete said the reaction he received from the aspiring runners has left him “speechless.” “This is exciting. I never thought I was such an inspiration like this,” De Grasse said. De Grasse, who trains in Phoenix, Arizona, is the reigning Pan Am champion in the 100 metre and 200 metre and the current Canadian record holder in the 200 metre. He’ll head to Edmonton in early July for Canadian qualifiers for the Rio Olympics.

uckle up for the drive of a lifetime. Alberta’s Icefields Parkway takes travellers from Banff to Jasper through the majestic Rocky Mountains. Glaciers, waterfalls and turquoise lakes line the stunning route along Hwy. 93. Before starting the 232-kilometre drive from the Banff hamlet of Lake Louise, download the Icefields Parkway GyPSy Guide app for $4.99. As you traverse the Parkway, the GPS-guided app will narrate the journey, highlighting approaching attractions, offering travel tips, and sharing interesting stories and facts. Travelling the Parkway in different directions unlocks different stories. Be sure to stop at the Columbia Icefield, where you can fuel your adrenaline by walking on the Athabasca Glacier or standing atop the Glacier Skywalk – a glass walkway suspended 280 m in the air off the side of a cliff. Speaking of fuel, gas up in Lake Louise, Saskatchewan Crossing and Jasper, the only spots with service stops on the Parkway. Approximate drive distance from Toronto: 7,647-km round-trip, including drive along Icefields Parkway. Approximate gas cost: $550.77 round trip, including drive along Icefields Parkway. Toronto Pearson International Airport to Calgary, Alberta: Approximate cost: $849.50 round trip. Average non-stop flight time: 4 hours and 15 minutes. (Calgary International Airport to Lake Louise is an approximately 200-km, 2-hour drive. Jasper to Calgary International Airport is an approximately 429-km, 4 hour and 50 minute drive.)

nderwater adventure awaits in Tobermory, Ontario. Strap on snorkeling or SCUBA gear and dive in Lake Huron to explore the 22 shipwrecks at Fathom Five National Marine Park. Glass-bottom boat tours offer more views of the famous shallow shipwrecks (pictured above) that decorate the crystal-clear water surrounding the Northern Bruce Peninsula. Divers and snorkelers can also explore underwater caves and waterfalls, prehistoric corral remains and more. Adventures await on land as well. Hike easy and expert trails at Bruce Peninsula National Park, and marvel at jagged dolomite cliffs and thousand-year-old trees, on route to the park’s famous grotto. The park’s trail system is part of the Bruce Trail, Canada’s longest marked footpath, stretching from Queenston, Niagaraon-the-Lake. At Little Cove Adventures, try mastering obstacles in both the high and low ropes courses. After exploring Tobermory, board the MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry to Manitoulin Island. The world’s largest freshwater lake island, it has more than 100 of its own lakes, some with their own islands. Don’t leave without trying Manitoulin Island’s signature hawberries. Approximate drive distance from Toronto: 590-km round trip. Approximate drive time: 6 hours and 50 minutes. Approximate gas cost: $40.09 round trip. Tobermory Municipal Airport is not equipped for large commercial flights.

ld-world and natural charm abound in Québec City. At Montmorency Falls Park, 84-metre-high waterfalls crash into the St. Lawrence from the Montmorency River. Enjoy the view while crossing over the falls on a suspension bridge, gondola or zipline, take the stairs that climb the cliff beside the falls, or try a via ferrata circuit and harness up to walk along a steel cable above the crashing water. Head to Historic Old Québec – a UNESCO World Heritage Treasure. Old Québec’s 4.5 kilometres of gated walls make it the only fortified North American city north of Mexico. The area boasts 37 National Historic Sites, including the iconic Château Frontenac (pictured above). Explore the centuries-old community with guided walking, cycling, bus, boat or horse-drawn carriage tours, or board a helicopter or hot air balloon to see it from above. Stop by Aquarium du Québec and take in stunning views of the St. Lawrence River while visiting seals, polar bears and thousands of other marine wildlife species. Before leaving La Belle Province, take the bridge to Île d’Orléans to see the island’s villages and taste its signature strawberries. Approximate drive distance from Toronto: 1,613-km round trip. Approximate drive time: 7 hours and 28 minutes each way. Approximate gas cost: $108.53 round trip. Toronto Pearson International Airport to Quebec City Jean Lesage International Airport Approximate cost: $454.50 round trip. Average flight time: 1 hour 40 minutes.

eggy’s Point Lighthouse rising from the rocky shore of St. Margaret’s Bay is arguably the most iconic scene in Atlantic Canada. After photographing the famous beacon and exploring the rocks, head to neighbouring The Sou’Wester Restaurant and Gift Shop and enjoy a bowl of world-famous chowder. Get a different view of Peggy’s Point Lighthouse (pictured above) by hopping aboard Peggy’s Cove Boat Tours. Along with the landmark, passengers can see whales, seals, puffins and more. Onboard, a live underwater video camera adds a unique glimpse of the ocean. Take in the scenery and uncover centuries of St. Margaret’s Bay history by visiting the 13 interpretive sites along the Coastal Heritage Trail, “a museum without walls.” Hike the thousand-acre Peggy’s Cove Preservation Area, peppered with huge boulders left behind by the last ice age. A trip to Nova Scotia is hardly complete without a donair, a sweet and savoury sandwich sacred in the province where it was created in the 1970s.
ust east of Moncton, lie the picturesque communities of Shediac and Pointe-du-Chêne. A popular vacation destination for eastern Canadians, the Acadian area boasts Canada’s warmest ocean waters. After dinner, head to the nostalgic Neptune Drive-In to catch a flick under the stars. Make sure to snap a photo with “The World’s Largest Lobster,” a giant sculpture (pictured above) that’s been welcoming tourists to the area since 1990. On Sunday, check out the bustling Shediac Park Market at Pascal Poirier Park. Cap off your stay by sailing the sea with Shediac Bay Cruises. Stand up to hate with pride and love
T
he city is on edge. Sunday’s mass murder at gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Florida, has put Toronto on high alert. That’s evident by Monday’s quick response by Toronto police to reports of a masked man walking around the University of Toronto’s St. George campus that the safety of the city and its citizens is of paramount importance. Dozens of Emergency Task Force officers descended on the campus, cordoning off roads searching each building, weapons drawn, in hopes of preventing a tragedy. Was there proof something as heinous as what happened in Orlando could happen here, in broad daylight? No. But the potenour view tial threat existed and that was enough. attack that killed 49 people Toronto in outThe enjoying a night of dancing and drinks at the gay club reminds solidarity us – once again – that hate hangs with all over us and lives can be tragically altered, and ended, in an instant. While Toronto police came up empty in their search for the “suspicious person,” reporting such suspicious activity to the authorities is something each and every one of us can do to ensure the safety of ourselves and our fellow Torontonians. We don’t want to live in fear, but we need to be vigilant to continue to live in peace. As Toronto continues celebrating its first-ever Pride Month, Pride Toronto executive director Mathieu Chantelois noted the need for safety and solidarity in the wake of Sunday’s shootings. “Pride has always been about creating a safe place where everyone can come together and be themselves,” he said. “Now, we are so painfully aware of the importance of standing up to hate with love and celebrating the beauty, diversity and strength of our community.” The Pride parade this year will be dedicated to the memory of the Pulse victims. The parade, which kicks off at Church and Bloor streets at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 3, will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a reading of the names of the 49 people killed and 53 wounded in the deadly attack. Pride is working with Toronto police and the RCMP on an upgraded security plan to ensure the public remains safe throughout Pride Month. The city is on edge, but it’s full of pride: for its citizens, its acceptance, and its sense of freedom.

Need to go further in eradicating homophobia It was to be a nice little holiday in California: joining my wife at the end of a west-coast business junket to stay with dear old friends in Burbank, meet some of her Los Angeles-area family that hadn’t made it up for the wedding, enjoy some sun-drenched Southern California chill after not having seen each other for a couple of weeks. A good holiday: the kind that celebrates loving relationships – reaffirming old ties, cementing new ones, along the mad freeway system that seems to be the spine of Los Angeles County. On Sunday, early, we watched a bigger spine crack. In Orlando, Florida, more than 100 people were gunned down in a gay nightclub on Saturday night by Omar Mateen in what first seemed an act of terrible hate but now it seems was an act of deliberate terror. And just down the
david nickle the city highway from us, in Santa Monica, police arrested an Indiana man with a truck full of guns and the stated intention of using them at Los Angeles’ Gay Pride parade. At this point, no word whether the planned attack was one of terror or hate. Details. The suspect, who’d driven in from Indiana, meant to do harm to gay and lesbian and transsexual people. Armed like that, he likely meant to kill them. That was very close – I’ll be honest, close enough that it rattled us. But we didn’t have to be here in Burbank to feel that way. It’s close all around. When we get back to Toronto later this week, that same threat – the low, cretinous bigotry that casts itself against the light of unsanctified love (forgive
me, today, that florid metaphor) – will be pervasive. We’re in a city where a sizeable portion of the city has objected strongly enough to a curriculum promoting understanding of gay and lesbian sex that they would consider withdrawing their children from classes. Just a few years ago, we elected a mayor whose homophobia prevented him from attending Pride events and inspired him to fight when the Rainbow Flag flew over City Hall during the Sochi Olympics. We’re getting better in some ways. At the top levels, we’re no longer burdened with hateful leadership: the new Mayor John Tory, the new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau don’t pander to that vile id. Kathleen Wynne has spent a career, in part, defending against it. We’re a good place. But really, so is the United States. Same-sex marriage is lawful. There
is nothing wrong and very much right with a boy meeting a boy at the Pulse nightclub and exchanging a deep and hopeful kiss. It ought not bring a death sentence. U.S. President Barack Obama laid it out very clearly. The shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando were an act of hate. They were an act of terror. Homophobia, that bromide that has kept many scowling bigots in dinner-table conversation for decades, has inspired the worst mass-shooting in American history. It is something that can no longer be tolerated, even in those quiet and awful conversations. If we are to take Daesh seriously, we must also take homophobes seriously. Omar Mateen has shown us.

Residents invited to take New Rouge Park legislation part in Paddle the Rouge tabled by federal Liberals Friends of the Rouge says words ‘ring hollow’
CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Scarborough residents are invited to connect with nature in their own backyard this weekend during Paddle the Rouge. Hosted by Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s (CPAWS) Wildlands League, the all-day, family friendly event kicks off on Saturday at 8 a.m. at Rouge Beach Park, 195 Rouge Hills Dr. It features two public paddles embarking at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., and a free youth learn-to-paddle session for children aged five to 18 starting at 11 a.m. “A lot of people don’t even know that the Rouge exists, so as an organization we feel it’s our great mission to help people connect with this wonderful, beautiful source of nature in their own backyard,” Wildland League spokesperson Jennifer Berney told The Scarborough Mirror. “Paddle the Rouge is a wonderful way for people to connect with nature, and nature, as we know, is a wonderful way to combat negativity and stress...It’s such a gift for us to be able to share this with families from all over Scarborough and from all over the GTA.” Registration for Paddle the Rouge’s 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. public paddles, which will see participants explore Rouge Park’s rare Carolinian forest and the more than 1,700 species of plants and animals it houses via canoe or kayak, is open at http://wildlandsleague.org/ptr2016

A kayaker paddles along the Rouge River. The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s Wildlands League is hosting the third annual Paddle the Rouge Saturday at Rouge Park.
Berney also urges those interested in participating in the public paddles to register for canoe or kayak rentals at bit.ly/1UlbYRL The Youth Learn to Paddle session starting at 11 a.m., meanwhile, will include several components starting with dry land instruction, followed by an introductory paddle, where teams of four kids and one instructor will get comfortable in their canoe or kayak in the pond, and lastly, a short paddle up one of the Rouge River’s junior explorer channels. While all 50 spots for the free youth session have already filled up, Berney encourages anyone still interested in participating to sign up for the waitlist. “If we have any spots open up, we’re going to get you on the water. We want to get as many people paddling as possible,” she said, noting organizers expect as many as 200 paddlers to take to the water during this year’s paddle.

The event will also boast plenty of on-shore activities to keep even the water-weary in attendance entertained. Berney said participants are encouraged to pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the beach, and they will be invited to take part in a variety of activities presented by guests from the Toronto and York Region Metis Council. “They’ll have some touchand-feel exhibits, as well as some historical components, storytelling, and arts and crafts workshops,” she said. “It’ll be a little bit of historical context, bringing in the history of the canoe and how Canada was mapped and founded by canoe.” Fe d e r a l M i n i s t e r o f Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna is expected to make an appearance at the event, which will serve as a fundraiser to support CPAWS Wildlands League’s work to protect Ontario parks. Canada’s Liberal government moved last week to rewrite the law governing Rouge National Urban Park (NUP) to the delight of environmentalists who had pushed for change. But it seems fears about the future of the Rouge Valley’s fragile ecology haven’t disappeared entirely. Ontario has refused for years to hand over 9,000 acres of land it owns in the park to the federal government. Environmental groups inspired and supported that refusal, convinced the former Conservative regime in Ottawa had put the park’s tenant farmers above its fragile ecology. When Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna announced last Thursday “ecological integrity” would be written into the park legislation, those groups cheered – except one. Friends of the Rouge Watershed (FRW ), which had been first to say the Conservatives’ vision for the Rouge was flawed, now say McKenna’s commitment to the Rouge’s ecology doesn’t go far enough. “The words are there, but it rings hollow,” Jim Robb, FRW’s general manager, said this week. “Words without action don’t bring change.” What Robb’s group wanted was an explicit commitment

in the legislation to “meet or exceed” existing policies of the former Rouge Park and Ontario’s Greenbelt. That, he said, includes plans for watershed protection requiring wider protected buffers along streams, and an “ecological corridor” running through the northern portion of the park in Markham. During last fall’s federal election campaign, FRW surveyed major candidates from 16 ridings around the park. All the Liberals responded, supporting a protected “main ecological corridor,” and agreeing the park’s managers must “give priority to the restoration and maintenance of ecological integrity.” McKenna – scheduled to appear at an event in the Rouge Valley this Saturday – promised last week to give the park’s tenant farmers leases lasting up to 30 years. Farmers in the Rouge and Pickering Airport lands have for decades complained short leases and arbitrary decisions by federal and provincial agencies gave them no security. McKenna, in a release, said longer leases will give the farmers, who are “providing an important source of locally grown food to the Greater Toronto Area,” more “certainty” about their future. She also committed the Liberal government to match the Conservative’s proposed contribution to the Rouge NUP, $170.5 million over 10 years and $10.6 million a year after that. The Conservatives passed their park legislation in 2015, but the federal Parks Canada
agency never actually controlled any Rouge Valley lands within Toronto. It’s expected after the amendments are passed and reviewed by the province, the Rouge NUP will finally be more than a national park on paper. Like other conservationists concerned with the Rouge, Robb said he isn’t against farming there, or longer leases. But this week, he said those long leases must be granted outside a scientifically determined natural heritage system for the park. Tenant farms – a legacy of large-scale government expropriations during the 1970s – still dominate the landscape of the park in Markham. If there are no plans to build the ecological corridor through that landscape, it could be 50 years before half the park outside Scarborough is renaturalized and open to the public, he said. Scarborough-Rouge Park MP Gary Anandasangaree, elected last fall, said he believes the amending legislation satisfies the province’s primary objection to transferring its land, and enjoys wide support. “This allows us to move forward,” the Liberal MP said this week, adding Parks Canada would include details about ecological restoration in a park management plan. “Balancing acts” are needed to handle park agriculture, but it’s clear ecological integrity is the government’s priority, he said.

Patrols increased near two schools Po l i c e h a v e i n c re a s e d patrols in the McCowan and Kingston roads area following three reports of attempted child abductions outside a school. Police said they have flooded the area with both uniform and plainclothes officers in an effort to identify the suspects. Officers are also re-interviewing the children involved as part of the investigation. Two of the incidents happened June 3. In the first occurrence, a man and a woman tried to engage students at the back of Fairmount
Public School and told them they would have more fun if they went with them. The second incident took place after school when a student was approached by two men who tried to lure him into a white van to play video games. A third incident happened early last week. The students weren’t harmed, and they all reported the incidents. Last week, Fairmount and nearby St. Agatha Catholic Elementary School sent letters home to parents. Anyone with information should call 416-808-4300.

Are you not hearing clearly when a group of people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything being said, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, the Audéo V hearing aid has been designed specifically to understand speech in group situations. The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in group situations, especially in restaurants. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that determine when you hear things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory centre of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.
Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation.
Without Audéo V
With Audéo V
The Audéo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech. Developed by Swiss audiologists the Audéo V hearing aid is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can trial the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. During your FREE hearing test, our Hearing Care Professionals will determine how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role the technology called “Autosense OS” plays. This technology can recognize where the person being spoken to is located and can amplify only his or her voice,
while ambient noise is reduced. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing aid can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds, seamlessly adjusting to the listening situation. According to Swiss researchers, this can significantly improve speech comprehension, especially in conversation for the right candidates. Interested people can register for a free hearing test and trial of the Audéo V by calling 1.888.408.7377

Never feel lonely if you find yourself defending or explaining your love of Scarborough. You are a part of an impressive array of passionate residents who make championing our multi-dimensional part of Toronto a priority. Combatting inaccurate media reports, highlighting our natural aspects of beauty, connecting with our enterprising, hard-working people, spearheading efforts to improve areas that need improving – we have no shortage of local heroes. They can be quietly behind the scenes (Scarborough Community Renewal Organization) or glisteningly high-profile (thank you award-winning singer The Weeknd for telling the New York Times your mother loves living here). Like a tested mama bear, I often let my instinct for protecting my home run wild. I’m a bit fierce when fending off silly scoffing and smearing. And that’s good. It’s what keeps great communities
helen stratigos gems of scarborough
from slipping into apathy and decline; it can stop rare sensational negative occurrences from defining an entire neighbourhood, and thwart wrong perceptions from taking hold. As author and expert on urban planning Joel Kotkin (who wrote the 2005 report The New Suburbanism) says, the ideal focus should be on creating even better-designed suburbs, and to maximize what our traditional appeal is: safety, good schools, privacy, and space. The legacy of Scarborough champions is long, and includes former Scarborough Mirror publisher Betty Carr, one of the founders of the Scarborough Walk of Fame (see its full list of inductees for more inspiration); Stand Up Scarborough!; Scarborough Arts; our Rotary Clubs; and the newly formed Scarborough Community Renewal
Organization (SCRO), among many others. With eight committees, SCRO wants our residents from diverse backgrounds to help revitalize Scarborough. I encourage you to explore their mission. I’ll leave the last word to the mysterious but popular champion, @ScarbTO, a Twitter user with an account called Scarborough News and Entertainment that has more than 14,000 followers (second only to “6 Dad” Councillor Norm Kelly’s): “Having lived all my life in Scarborough, gone to school and worked here, volunteered tens of thousands of hours and dedicated my life here, I wanted others to have a passion for what is a beautiful part of Toronto. I was tired of the bad reputation Scarborough has. So I wanted to rebrand, re - e d u c a t e, re - e x p l o re Scarborough the good.”

The vision of the Scarborough Waterfront Project is to create a system of greenspaces along the Lake Ontario shoreline which respect and protect the significant natural and cultural features of the Bluffs, enhance the terrestrial and aquatic habitat, and provide a safe and enjoyable waterfront experience.

The Scarborough Bluffs:
Creating a waterfront haven for all The Scarborough Bluffs are a wondrous, but largely undiscovered natural jewel of Toronto’s waterfront. Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA) is working to make the Bluffs more easily accessible while maintaining and protecting the significant natural heritage of the site for generations to come. While home to some of the richest natural habitats within the Greater Toronto Area, the Scarborough Bluffs pose interesting, yet not unsolvable challenges. For hundreds of years, the shoreline has had little or no attention paid to it. Invasive species have also contributed to loss of native wildlife and safe public access is limited. In 2015, TRCA began a project to create a system of greenspaces between Bluffer’s Park and East Point Park along the Scarborough waterfront. To ensure TRCA makes the most informed decisions during the planning phase, the project became part of a provincial Environmental Assessment study. As part of this study, a vision for the project has been developed with input from the public and various stakeholders, including specific project objectives. It reads as follows:
The projecT vision is To respecT and proTecT The significanT naTural and culTural feaTures of The Bluffs; enhance The TerresTrial and aquaTic haBiTaT; and provide a safe and enjoyaBle waTerfronT experience To visiTors. The purpose and goal of the Environmental Assessment process is to ensure the project aligns
with the vision and objectives as developed by input by an informed public and stakeholder partnership. In addition to protecting the natural features of the Scarborough Bluff’s, the project aims to strike a balance between protecting the natural heritage of the area, while creating additional safe access to the waterfront. In doing so, TRCA will manage public safety and property risks, accelerate priority shoreline erosion control works and provide an enjoyable waterfront experience. Ultimately, this is a collaborative project with the public acting as TRCA’s valued partner. TRCA invites you to participate in our second Public Information Centre session on June 28 at Cardinal Newman High School, 100 Brimley Road South. The Open House takes place from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. with a presentation to follow. This is your chance to have your voice heard about the future of the Scarborough Bluffs. To register or for more information, visit: www.trca.ca/swp TRCA welcomes the participation of local communities, stakeholders, government agencies and indigenous communities to provide input throughout the EA process. We hope to see you out on June 28 at Cardinal Newman High School, 100 Brimley Road South. Premier Kathleen Wynne has expanded her Liberal government’s cabinet, and she brought in some newer faces to do it, says a Toronto MPP. “There’s a lot of fresh eyes and fresh perspective there. That’s going to help us with our mandate,” said PickeringScarborough East MPP Tracy MacCharles, who kept one of her portfolios and assumed another. The mid-term cabinet shuffle announced early on Monday, June 13, also made Mitzie Hunter Onatario’s education minister. She said she’s looking forward to working with teachers, school boards, parents and students. “Young people represent the future of this province, and it is crucial that our schools provide safe, rewarding, and transformative opportunities for children and youth to learn, grow, and thrive in Ontario,” Hunter added in a statement. The ScarboroughGuildwood MPP, who takes over from Liz Sandals, was
previously an associate minister for finance, working on an Ontario retirement savings plan. Michael Coteau, MPP for Don Valley East in North York, had been minister for tourism, culture and sport and responsible for Toronto’s Pan Am Games. First elected in 2011, he’s now Ontario’s children and youth minister, as well as the minister responsible for anti-racism. MacCharles, who had the children and youth portfolio, remains responsible for women’s issues. She now has the additional responsibility of being minister responsible for accessibility, a new portfolio which MacCharles thought “could be quite broad” and potentially act as a “disability lens” across government. MacCharles also thought the position could bring a sharper focus to implementing the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, which was first passed in 2001. Critics have said the government has been acting too slowly on making the province barrier-free.
MacCharles said her new duties could be made to benefit young people living with mental health issues. “Not all disabilities are visible, right?” The cabinet now includes 40 per cent women, which is consistent with targets Wynne set last week for government agency appointments. York South-Weston MPP Laura Albanese, who joined the government after a 2007 by-election, was named minister of citizenship and immigration. Cabinet veteran and Scarborough Centre MPP Brad Duguid has given up his infrastructure portfolio to another Southern Ontario MPP, Bob Chiarelli, but he remains Ontario’s economic development minister and was named minister responsible for growth. Wynne, whose popularity had been low of late, had recently suggested she would name a cabinet which includes more women. On Friday, York West MPP Mario Sergio announced he was voluntarily stepping down as minister responsible for seniors.
De Silva is Green Party candidate for Scarborough-Rouge River byelection Scarborough-Rouge River’s provincial byelection now has a Green candidate, Priyan Lakshantha De Silva. Ontario’s Green Party announced De Silva was running on June 13, and said he lives in Malvern. The party said its candidate worked as an office administrator for Toronto’s public school board until recently, when he became a full-time activist on environmental
and social justice issues in the city. His LinkedIn profile says De Silva also worked last fall for Elections Canada as a youth outreach officer. Scarborough-Rouge River must have a byelection soon because its longtime Liberal MPP Bas Balkissoon unexpectedly resigned in March. The Liberals are running Piragal Thiru, a manager of diversity programs for York
Region, and the Progressive Conservatives have chosen Raymond Cho, a local city councillor, as their candidate. New Democrats have nominated Neethan Shan, also a local public school trustee. Like Thiru and Shan, De Silva was born in Sri Lanka. The party said he has worked at community gardens in the area.
Bike hub to open on Danforth Avenue One of two promised “bike hubs” in Scarborough opens on Danforth Avenue this Saturday with special events and a group ride. Scarborough has just one of Toronto’s bicycle shops,
and not much access to bicycle repairs. The hub at AccessPoint on Danforth, east of Victoria Park Avenue, is part of efforts to change that. Scarborough Cycles says Saturday’s event, from noon
to 2 p.m., offers free bicycle safety checks and helmet fittings, bike decorating and a slow bicycle race. The second hub will be at Birchmount Bluffs Neighbourhood Centre.

CONSUMER FEATURE
On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85-Alive” program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 per cent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders. Licensed Mortgage Agent
Rashida Riel, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the Scarborough, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans
on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debts. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Rashida Riel, RashidaRiel.ca, 1-888-334-6089.

Parade part of annual Highland Creek festival The Highland Creek Heritage Festival rolls out “the biggest little parade in Toronto” this weekend. Full of food and entertainment, the festival encourages past and present residents of the Highland Creek Village area to meet each other, said Dave Adamson, the festival’s past chair and parade announcer. “It allows the community people to get together.” The parade leaves the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 258 on Lawson Road at 11 a.m., heading across the Highland Creek Overpass and through the old commercial village in Scarborough’s southeastern corner to Old Kingston Road and Watson Street. Adamson said the day of fun on June 18 – lasting from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., though local roads may be closed a bit longer – includes a beer garden this year at Old Kingston and Morrish
roads. There’s a children’s area with rides, petting zoo, and antique cars, plus a craft market, live bands, and renowned town crier Bill McKay reading the proclamation. Permits and other festival costs may be “going through the roof,” said Adamson, but merchants and residents have stepped up to contribute, raising funds at a dinner and dance last Saturday. Lawn wAgincourt Bowling Club open
The Agincourt Lawn Bowling Club season runs until the end of September and players are welcome to learn about the sport. According to the club, lawn bowling is a great way to get some light exercise and meet new friends. New players and visitors are always welcome at the Agincourt club, which
