Homeless service program appeals city funding cut

After Grant “Gunner” Faulkner died in a fire on Jan. 13, Torontonians focused briefly on services available for the homeless and destitute in Scarborough, and how scarce they were. Then the city decided to cut funding to one of the biggest, a drop-in program that had been a lifeline for Faulkner, by 20 per cent. Agincour t Community Services Association may find out later this week if its appeal of that decision is successful, but the math seems against it. More than a dozen other groups want part of a $75,000 pool left over for appeals, and ACSA, to restore what it had, needs $50,000.

Meanwhile, the drop-in and its hot breakfasts and lunches, run six days a week by the nonprofit agency in its offices and at three churches near Sheppard and Midland avenues, gets busier. There were about 16,000 visits by clients last year to the program, the only one in Scarborough open weekends and holidays. People come for the food, but also get help finding housing, dealing with landlords, or battling an addiction. They can also get supplies, medical care, a shower, the use of a telephone or computer. “To do all these things takes resources, and you can’t keep chipping away at our resources,” Lee Soda, ACSA’s executive director, said this week. >>>SERVICES, page 3

Tamil Fest to showcase culture in Scarborough MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Greater Toronto’s Tamil community is now grown up, and on Aug. 29 and 30, the rest of us can say, “Vanakkam” – welcome. That’s the weekend the first Tamil Fest in Scarborough will showcase a people’s arts, music, and cuisine, the Canadian Tamil Congress says, for the first time outside the Indian subcontinent. Tamil-Canadians are 300,000 strong, “shining in various fields,” and own more than 2,000 businesses in the GTA alone, an audience at the street festival’s launch was told this week. Yet the community’s culture and its history in Canada are not understood by most other Canadians. Tamil Fest, on Morningside Avenue between Finch

Avenue and Neilson Road, aims to change that, as well as to celebrate Tamil-Canadians’ many accomplishments. “This will be the biggest and best cultural project Canadian Tamil Congress has ever undertaken,” Raj Thavaratnasingham, CTC president, declared Tuesday at the Markham Convention Centre in Scarborough. “There’s excitement in the air, and we hope all of GTA will grab it.” As well as world-class entertainers on the stage and street performers “whose dance and colours will dazzle you,” Thavaratnasingham said, the first Tamil Fest will have booths where festivalgoers can buy food, saris and curry powder, plus a TamilCanadian museum. Toronto Mayor John Tory said it the next step in what he called the community’s

incredible evolution and growth. It will be “a badge of honour for the Tamil community and for all of Toronto,” he said, before children performed a bewildering variety of traditional Tamil dances – just a taste, said master of ceremonies Sivan Ilangko, of what visitors will see in August. growing pains There was also acknowledgement at Tuesday’s ceremony of the community’s “growing pains,” some of which resulted from a threedecade-long civil war in Sri Lanka which ended in defeat for separatist Tamils just six years ago. Performing an imagined dialogue between TamilCanadians of 1990 and those of 2015, members of a youth leadership program said the

arrivals once had few places in which to express their culture, and “were all focused on earning to barely make a living.” The community is “one that has come from grave adversities, but is so resilient,” said Rathika Sitsabaiesan, elected in 2011 as the first Tamil-Canadian MP in Scarborough-Rouge River, where the festival will take place. “We are opening up our community and inviting the rest of Toronto and the world,” she said. Other dignitaries who came to speak were Scarborough-Guildwood MPP Mitzie Hunter, representing Ontario’s government, Scarborough-Rouge River MPP Bas Balkissoon, and Raymond Cho, the area’s city councillor. “Canada is blessed because

Report calls for improved resources for local Aboriginal youth apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

A report released Friday recommends more education and training resources for Aboriginal youth in Scarborough. The report, titled Closing the Gap, was sponsored by Native Child and Family Services of Toronto and was authored by Western University professor Jason Brown and consultant Melissa Carroll. “The report is part of a process of looking at the issues and planning for services,” NCFST executive director Kenn Richard said on June 12. “It’s about the processes and creating opportunities for employment, training, education...that is needed to get to a place where you

youth make up 23.5 per cent of the youth unemployment rate. Over the past year, NCFST conducted 71 academic assessments in its general equivalency program and found 74 per cent of those assessed aren’t reading and writing at the Grade 8 level. “There are structural issues related to Aboriginal kids accessing support for enhancing their education or their employment opportunities,” Richard said. “There are barriers in place, mostly related to a lack of focussed training programs and dedicated classrooms for those that are struggling.” About 100 people, including government officials and Aboriginal community members, turned out to the Friday morning launch of the report at NCFST’s Scarborough Child

and Family Life Centre on Galloway Road. The event featured performances by Aboriginal youth and a power point presentation by Closing the Gap’s authors. The next step, Richard said, is to reached out to the provincial government to bring “tangible services and programs.” There is a growing Aboriginal youth population in Scarborough, mainly in Malvern and KGO (Kingston, Galloway and Orton Park). Brown said the report was in response to concerns about education and employment achievement in the Aboriginal community. “ The purpose of the report was to hear from the Indigenous youth themselves in the Scarborough community to find out what makes

sense for them in terms of education and employment supports.” Fifty-two Aboriginal youth, ages 16 to 29, participated in the report. Among the recommendations in Closing the Gap is the following characteristics for employment readiness and literacy programs: n for youth only; n culturally based; n deals with a range of needs; n has dedicated counselling staff; n includes partnerships with other services; n has concrete outcomes; n has open and flexible delivery. “This (report) really documents something that the community has known for a very long time,” Brown said.

nformation overload is one of the defining characteristics of this generation. There’s so much of it everywhere, and often it’s unsolicited and uninformed, which makes disseminating the truth from the fiction a difficult task. When content is packaged similarly, or arrives to you en-masse at rapid speed, how do you discover the information that will help you become better informed, versus the content that may lead you astray? There’s an effort underway to shine a light on quality information where journalism is concerned. Dubbed JournalismIS, the campaign aims to promote professional journalism and all that it stands for: reliability, accuracy and accountability. Starting soon you’ll see advertisements in our print ediour view tionof The Scarborough Mirror and other newspapers, on television ‘News is the and online touting the benefits of good journalism. lifeblood of We’re great at telling other people’s stories, but as journalists we’re democracy’ not great at telling our own stories and promoting what we do. That’s why the team at The Guardian and all other Metroland newspapers in Ontario have joined forces with major news outlets, media associations, unions and journalism schools to support the JournalismIS campaign. The volume of today’s information and range of opinion challenges the very nature of our industry, so we need to support one another in preserving and promoting the work we do. We need to demonstrate the power behind good journalism in engaging the public and fostering a stronger connection between individuals and the neighbourhoods in which they live. “News is the lifeblood of democracy,” said Mary Agnes Walsh, campaign spokesperson and Winnipeg Free Press reporter at the JournalismIS launch in Toronto last week. “Our campaign is aimed at initiating a wider conversation about the value of journalism and what we all need to do to support a robust journalistic culture in Canadian society.” So, we invite our readers to tell us what they look for in good journalism. column

Two minutes for piling on the pylons When you head out each day, how far do you get before you run into an orange and black cone? A couple of miles? A mile? Half a mile, maybe? I can’t even make it up the street anymore without coming face to face with one of those ubiquitous party poopers. It’s as if the little devils are following me around. It’s one thing to come across them around highways, parkways and expressways, or bridges and railings, or public transit routes. We’re all aware there’s no getting away from cones in those locations. They come with the territory. But having them take over your neighbourhood, especially in summer, just doesn’t feel right. I’m not talking cones for rideathons, walkathons, 10k runs or marathons, where they’re up the night before and taken away the

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY night after. These events energize a community. What’s more, they come and go in the blink of an eye. I’m talking the cones that hang around seemingly forever, chaperoning jobs that never seem to get finished, like infrastructure upgrades or street maintenance. What’s curious about the latter scenario is there is typically a gap between when the cones are first plopped on the sidewalk and the project they’re there to oversee actually starts. It’s not uncommon to see such cones sitting all by their lonesome for long periods of time, before you see any activity. Moaning about it isn’t going to change anything, of course, so I say if you

can’t beat ’em join ’em. While the cones are out with nothing to do before the intended job begins, why not put them to work taking care of something else they are often associated with while they’re waiting, like a TV production, for example. That way you could kill two birds with one cone. During the time they’re idle, you could have them earning their keep while you shoot a reality TV series. By merging projects you could also close fewer streets, which would save taxpayer money and reduce neighbourhood aggravation. An added benefit is that you could even include the little pylons in the series. Not only would it be great PR for the cones, which are single-handedly taking the rap for slowing the city down to a crawl, they might become overnight sensations.

I can just see the shows now: Survivor Downtown Toronto: Sixteen carefree, captivating, charismatic cones protect the tallest new condo going up in the city. Who will be the last cone standing? So You Think You Can Sit There All Day Like a Bump On A Log?: Who will be the last cone sitting? Extreme Makeover: Cone Edition This Old Cone Toronto’s Next Top Cone The list is long. Who knows, if the idea catches on, they just might put smiles on our faces at rush hour, instead of frowns, as we inch our way to and from work each day. Film at 11. PVR later if you’re stuck in traffic. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Masaryktown Park hosts Czech and Slovak Day ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

An annual event celebrating Czech and Slovak culture takes place in Scarborough this Saturday. The 2015 Czech and Slovak Day, now in its 68th year, will feature volleyball and soccer tournaments, swimming, traditional Slovak dancers, a bouncy castle and musical entertainment. The event, held at Masaryktown Park (450 Scarborough Golf Club Rd.), will finish with a bonfire. “It’s an all-day celebration,” said organizer Iva Jecmen, noting between 300 and 600 people are expected to attend. The festival, hosted by the Masaryk Memorial Institute, begins at 10 a.m. This is one of several events MMI organizes throughout

the year at Masaryktown in an effort to preserve and promote Czech and Slovak culture in the GTA. “The second and third generations ver y much assimilate, but we are trying to keep them interested in their past, in the past of their grandfathers and grandmothers, because it’s something special, it’s something different,” Jecmen said. “And here is the place where they can be all together.” Masaryktown features

the 20-acre Masaryk Park, an outdoor swimming pool and the Prague Restaurant. Two housing buildings are also on the property, which was a former farm purchased in 1948 by MMI, then called Masaryk Memorial Hall Inc. MMI has a membership of about 100 families. There are an estimated 20,000 people of Czech or Slovak heritage in the GTA. Jecmen admits Masaryktown is not wellknown in Scarborough though she hopes to change that. “Families can come here for picnics. There are five outdoor barbecues,” she said. “We would like to be visited more.” Admission to Czech and Slovak Day is $15 (children 12 and under get in free). For more info, call 416-4394354.

Playing the waiting game

DAVID GROSSMAN scm@insidetoronto.com

M

o Walker is playing the waiting game. It hasn’t been easy, but the Scarborough native really has no alternative, and is learning a great deal about patience. Staying in tip-top physical shape, Walker remains optimistic that his name gets picked in the upcoming National Basketball League draft on Thursday, June 25. Canadians have done well in recent years, but the 23 year old is focused on his future, and has spent the past couple of weeks displaying his skills to NBA teams, showing his talent and hoping for an opportunity. Away from his Sheppard and Neilson area home a great deal the past several years while earning a degree from the University of Minnesota, and now working on his masters in youth development, Walker sees a career in personal development and athletics. Raptors workout For now, priority one is the NBA and he has worked out with the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers, the Utah Jazz and the Toronto Raptors. His agent has also lined up visits with Washington, Cleveland, Dallas and Memphis. “I am just hopeful that someone gives me a chance,” said a nervous Walker, taking a break at home and returning to his laid back personality when he’s not on the basketball court. “The NBA is the goal – and it always has been.” Walker, who has worked diligently and made the best of his opportunities, dropped 50 pounds to a slimmer and more svelte 260. His massive 6-foot-10

Will Scarborough’s Mo Walker hear his name called in next week’s NBA draft? size, and aggressiveness and rigorous workouts, could help a team looking for a low post player that is physical. A three-time member of Canada’s National team, Walker plays with emotion and a mean streak. At Minnesota, he finished his NCAA career on a high note getting all Big Ten Conference honourable mention, was a Player of the Week and led the Gophers in rebounds and blocks. With a wingspan of 7-foot-2, he also averaged 11.8 points a game. “It would be nice, if I am fortunate, to play in Toronto for the Raptors, but that’s the dream of every Canadian,” said Walker, who may not know that Toronto general manager Masai Ujiri has publicly said he wants to get Canadian players on his roster. Articulate and aware that his life could change dramatically by playing in the professional league, Walker would grab at an opportunity to play in an NBA Developmental League. Mother Teresa CHS Some claim Walker will never be an explosive athlete, but showed flashes and he has the skills, toughness and tenacity to be an asset. He sets excellent screens, is effective at scoring with his back to the basket and was Minnesota’s best passer from the low post. He’s also much more confident in himself than he’s ever been. Along the basketball journey, which started at Mother Teresa Catholic High School where he

played on several teams that won provincial medals, Walker left high school at age 17 and said he wasn’t ready for college. He packed a suitcase and shuffled off to Brewster Academy, a private prep school located in picturesque Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. The year he played, Walker was a factor in Brewster’s 35-5 record and championships in both the National Prep School Invitational Class A New England Prep School Athletic Council. Scouted It was also a better opportunity to get scouted than playing at a Canadian university or college. A year later, Minnesota came knocking and offered him a scholarship. But his initiation came with a price. With a knee injury in a non-conference game affecting the majority of his first year, he was red-shirted the following season. As a sophomore, and then well over 300 pounds, he didn’t have the stamina. It showed with his inability to play more than brief spurts in games. Shedding the weight and non-stop rehabilitation after surgery, turned things in his favour at Minnesota. “There was always support from teammates, my family and friends,” said Walker, who praised his parents, Craig and Marie and older brother Ryan. “It just inspired me to get better, stronger and work harder.

Provincial Liberals to learn same lesson on carding that Tory did? Maybe those holding power in this city and this province want to eventually stamp out the odious practice of carding by police and maybe they don’t. But if they do, a word of advice: it’s hard to stamp something out walking tip-toe. That seems to be what the provincial government had in mind this week when it sent Community Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi out to announce new regulations this fall to govern police when they stop and question members of the public not suspected of a crime. The regulation isn’t a ban of the investigative practice that has been shown to disproportionately target young men of colour in Toronto, and Naqvi made that clear when he announced it on Tuesday. The regulations, yet unreleased, will simply require that stops by police not be arbitrary. It isn’t going over any better with community groups than the policy approved earlier

david nickle the city this year at the Toronto Police Services Board — a policy that amounted to little more than guidelines. Today, Mayor John Tory will make an attempt to stop carding, bringing a motion to the Police Services Board along with a mea culpa, for supporting the policy to begin with this spring. It’s a position Tory was shamed into taking, by a gathering of highly influential Torontonians and a seminal essay by Toronto journalist Desmond Cole describing the indignity and traumatizing effect of the practice. It’s a wonder that the provincial government isn’t taking a lesson from Tory’s experience and matching his newfound disdain. It’s true that police value carding as an intelligence-

gathering strategy. But one wonders at the intensity of the defence of the practise by Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and his predecessor, Bill Blair. Crime rates have been declining for years in Toronto, and it is unlikely police enforcement, or lack thereof, has had as much to do with that as have simple demographic shifts. At the same time, there’s a wider context emerging, as evidence emerges that police across North America are engaging in sometimes quite odious acts of racial profiling and violence toward people of colour. It is perplexing to see political leadership indulge the digging-of-heels that persists in policing ranks. Tory learned the folly of that, but he had to be taught. The provincial Liberals seem bound to learn that lesson themselves.

makes 10-minute service promise wTTC The TTC is promising more improvements to off-peak transit service. At a press conference Monday, TTC chair Josh Colle announced 52 bus and streetcar routes, which also includes the city’s four rapid transit lines, will have 10 minutes or better service outside of the rush hour period, starting in the fall. Details about the plans are vague, but the result promised by Colle will be shorter waits for transit, especially outside of the downtown core. The TTC board is expected to approve the improvements to service at its monthly meeting scheduled for June 22.

This week the city launched a network of interactive signs intended to make the city more accessible to the thousands of visitors expected to attend the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Inspired by other cities’ experiences, the Toronto 360 Wayfinding Strategy, a.k.a TO360 includes two sizes of “info totems”, descriptive pillars depicting areas of interest and local maps, as well as “finger posts” which literally point the way to local landmarks. The new signage is found in the Entertainment District, St. Lawrence and most prominently in the Financial District, whose Business Improvement Area helped with planning

Fatherhood awarded at film fest SAM JURIC sjuric@insidetoronto.com The reel of award winners for the Scarborough Worldwide Film Festival has been announced. The festival screened 15 international films from 10 countries spanning five continents. The festival was also a juried competition. Although the festival showcased international talent in the world of film everything was coming up Toronto. The documentary film Fatherhood, directed by Scarborough’s Alicia Harris, won for Best Short Film. The Trip, directed by Grace Wang who grew up in Parkdale, won the Audience Choice Award for Best Short Film. The jury committee included Arshad Khan, director of Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival; Michael Barry, content development and operations at Cineplex Entertainment; Sara Saljoughi, assistant professor of English and Cinema

Studies at the University of Toronto; and Scarborough native Steven Hoffner, an award- winning director. The 22-year-old Harris’ Fatherhood had already been screened at the Canada International Film Festival earlier this year where the film won the Royal Reel Award. The documentary paints the portrait of a young father and examines the role childhood plays in a man’s ability to parent, said Harris. The Trip centres on the relationship between a mother and daughter during a transformative road trip to Tobermory, ON. “The idea for the film was triggered by my own experience with my mother on a similar trip. I wanted to study two people and how they come to a better understanding of themselves and of each other,” said Wang. The short film was originally pitched at the Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival during its So You Think You Can Pitch event. An award-winning film

maker at 32 years old, Wang was not always so sure of her passion for film making. Before she fell in love with film, Wang was a pre-med student until she became interested in law. She graduated from law school and worked as a representative for refugees who face deportation. After deciding law was not the career for her, she wanted to do something that would combine her love for diversity, film and writing. “I never felt more grounded or more connected to myself than when I was making my first film. That’s how I knew this was what I wanted to do,” Wang said. The Trip was filmed, acted and made completely by women of colour, she said. “I think that in itself is a statement and it should be celebrated,” said Wang. Wang was 11 years old when she arrived on Canadian soil and her struggles as a woman and an immigrant inform the stories she tells through film.

Blair wins Liberal nomination In a decision that should surprise very few observers, federal Liberals in Scarborough Southwest made Bill Blair their candidate on Saturday. It’s clear people in the riding want a change, the former Toronto police chief said after his first-ballot nomination win at R.H. King Academy. “After 10 years, the people of our community have enough of our federal government. They are ready for the leadership of Justin Trudeau,” he said. To successfully make the transition to federal politics, however, Blair must beat Dan

Harris, the riding’s incumbent New Democrat MP, who launched his re-election bid Sunday at a Kingston Road campaign office. “We are ready,” Harris, who took what had been a longtime Liberal riding in 2011, said to his supporters. “Everyone knows the NDP has the momentum leading up to the election.” Blair beat his only remaining opponents, journalist Muhammad Bukhari and college professor Marlene Thelusma Remy, for the nomination. On Thursday, Michele Serrano, an accountant, became the third Liberal

nomination-seeker to withdraw voluntarily after campaigning in Scarborough Southwest for more than a year. Criminologist Michael Kempa and former CTV anchor Tim Weber dropped out of the race earlier, saying Blair, a prominent figure in Toronto, couldn’t be beaten. A general election is expected this fall. Scarborough Southwest’s federal Conservative association is preparing for candidate selection interviews and expects its own nomination process to begin “very soon.

Creek planning meeting wHighland Residents who live near Highland Creek Village can hear about proposed changes to its roads, streetscapes and on-street parking areas next week. Zoning in the village was recently changed to permit modest mixed-use development, and a year ago the city launched Highland Creek Village Transportation Master Plan to adapt its road network to “support future population growth.” The study has arrived at a “preliminary recommended solution,” a set of changes to be completed over the next two decades. These will be discussed at an open house June 24, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 258 at 45 Lawson Rd. A presentation on the plan will be made at 6:30 p.m. More information is at www. toronto.ca/hcvtransportation management input sought wWaste

Scarborough’s Crispin Duenas has been named a member of the Canadian archery team that will compete in next month’s Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. Duenas is a two-time Olympian, having competed in archery for Canada in both the London 2012 and Beijing 2008 Olympics. Competition in the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games will mark his third appearance representing Canada at the Pan Ams, and he will be aiming to win his third straight Pan Am Games medal. In the 2011 Pan Am Games he won a silver medal in individual competition; and in 2007 he was a member of the Canadian squad that won silver in team competition. “Our team has been training hard to ensure that we perform at our A-game here in Toronto. Canada has some outstanding archery talent and it is a dream come true for us to represent our country

Services in Scarborough for the homeless are spread too far apart >>>from page 1 Cuts would be made in October which could mean fewer hours, fewer staff or less food, she said. “Scarborough’s most vulnerable becomes affected.” Soda said city officials may think they are “dispersing” money through Scarborough because other local agencies providing services to the homeless – and which hadn’t received funding before – are now getting a piece of the pie. But staff of the ACSA program said

the city isn’t considering the size of Scarborough, and how difficult it is to move around there, particularly in winter, on a low income. Some visitors to the drop in “walk vast distances” to reach it, arriving with frostbite or foot problems, said Sara Clenyg-Jones, ACSA’s homeless and outreach services coordinator. “People will stay in the Tim Hortons, stay in the drop ins,” because there’s no way to go to other services, as there is downtown, she

said. Faulkner, a client of the program who was 49 and often homeless, died when a homemade hut caught fire near Sheppard and McCowan Road. At a Tu e s d a y m e e t i n g o f Scarborough Community Council, Soda thanked councillors Chin Lee and Norm Kelly for writing letters supporting the restoration of program funds. But these Scarborough councillors and others, while praising the

work of ACSA - Kelly said such organizations in Toronto’s inner suburbs increasingly need funding - they disagreed with the group on the issue of rooming houses. Though basement apartments and renting two rooms in a home can be legal in Scarborough already, the city is now considering changes that could make some local rooming houses legal. Scarborough councillors have shown little tolerance for that idea.

Clenyg-Jones, however, said many ACSA clients resort to rooming houses and substandard housing rented by “unscrupulous” landlords because there is no alternative. Soda said she supports legalizing rooming houses only with a system in place to make them safe, said tenants in illegal rooms are afraid to speak up about poor conditions.

Cast’s comedic ability shines in The Mumberley Inheritance MARIA TZAVARAS scm@insidetoronto.com A well-deserved standing ovation was given to the cast and crew of Scarborough Theatre Guild’s final show of the season, The Mumberley Inheritance by Warren Graves. It’s an hilarious, exhaustingly funny show that showcases the sheer talent and comedic ability of the cast, and a throwback to classic storytelling, in a show the whole family can enjoy. Set in Mumberley Manor in Suffolk, England at the turn of the century, this show genre mimics the style of pantomime and silent film, and also has improv and cartoonlike characters that are larger-thanlife. This interactive, audienceinvolved show that breaks the fourth wall contains classic storytelling elements such as a damsel in distress, a villain who threatens to destroy her family and heroes who must save the day. A large projector prompts the audience to boo, hiss and cheer accordingly, and the actors are constantly addressing the audience, and feeding off their reactions. The story follows the Mumberley

Daphne’s intended, and Jack (if he ever returns), are the only ones who can save them. However, Marmaduke, with the help of his unwilling sidekick Crispin Cringe (Martin Kelly), is determined to marry the beautiful Daphne and acquire Mumberley Manor. enjoyable show

family, daughter Daphne (Nicole Marie McCafferty), the patriarch, Sir Roger (Gregory Hertel), and Jack (Dylan Maloney), who hasn’t been seen in years as he’s away trying to find out where the Mumberley inheritance is hidden in order to help Roger who is in dire straits financially.

Financial trouble, a beautiful daughter and a father who is aging and has no one to help him is an invitation for a wealthy villain to arrive, in this case, the dastardly Mr. Marmaduke Mayhem (Damien Gulde), to take advantage of the family’s hardship. Rodney Stoutheart (Brad Finch),

Will evil prevail? Will someone save the day? It doesn’t really matter because it is such an enjoyable show to watch that the ending becomes irrelevant. The humour in this show is overthe top, and the plot becomes more ridiculous as it goes along. There are continual plot twists – such as the unlikely budding affair between Crispin and the Mumberley’s maid, Dotty (Catherine Meyer), and nurse Polly’s (Polina Kheifets) sordid past with the long-lost Jack. Director Mike Ranieri did an amazing job of directing and casting this show. Every detail, from the addition of the live pianist (Jeff Rosenthal) and the gorgeously-constructed set of Mumberley Manor, is impressive. McCafferty portrays Daphne with the perfect balance or innocence, flightiness and charm and

her comedic timing is amazing. Hertel as Rodger, Finch as Rodney, Kelly as Crispin and Maloney as Jack also exude amazing comedic talent. Individually and as an ensemble, they are a pleasure to watch onstage. The other ladies in this show, Meyer as Dotty and Kheifets as Polly, are also fantastic, and their characters, while less vocal, are an integral part of the comedy. When you have a villain that you want to kill off, you may not want to cast Gulde in the role. He is so talented, funny and incredible in this role you’ll want him to succeed just to see him continue to perform. Take your friends and your family and go see this show. You won’t be disappointed, and you will leave feeling better from having laughed so much. The Mumberley Inheritance runs until June 19, 8 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees on June 14 and 20, at the Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd. For more details, visit www.theatrescarborough.com

Preparing your children for the next school year Although it may seem like summer has just arrived, it won’t be long before your children are packing their backpacks and heading back to class. While your children enjoy the summer, start thinking about how you can help prepare them for the next school year. According to research by John Hopkins University, summer vacation can cause students to lose up to two months of grade level equivalency in math and reading. As a result, several weeks of your children’s new school year will be spent reviewing materials previously discussed during the last school year. If your children encountered any difficulties or challenges when first studying those concepts, they may experience similar issues when those concepts are reintroduced at the beginning of the school year. On the other hand, if your children are looking to advance their studies during this period, an academic enrichment program would be an ideal solution to

A coalition of media outlets, associations, unions and journalism schools are banding together in a marketing campaign to spread the message that professional journalism just can’t be beat. Pegged ‘JournalismIS,’ the campaign is backed by Metroland Media Group and will feature newspaper, television and online advocacy ads touting the value of professional journalism. “Our starting point for this, was a general worry that journalists weren’t doing enough to tell their own stories,” said campaign spokesperson Mary Anges Welch at the launch Friday, June 12 at the Ryerson School of Journalism in Toronto. The former president of the Canadian Association of Journalists and reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press said: “We’re not talking enough about the contribution we make nationally, but also on the local level to Canadian

public life. We’re not talking about the value of an independent, reliable, ethical, impartial journalistic culture in Canada.” The advertisements, which will begin to appear across news outlets Saturday, June 13, for the next four months, aim to rally the journalism community to increase awareness, recognition and support for professional journalism. Ian Oliver, president of Metroland Media Group, agreed the media does a great job telling other people’s stories, but not so much their own. And having professional journalists at the grassroots level is just important as covering stories on a national level, he said. “Many people overlook the importance of community journalism. I think we’re the fabric of the community,” Oliver said. “Metroland employs about 500 professional journalists – we’re a significant part of the journalism world. And if Metroland isn’t providing a forum for the community,

investigating stories and providing information, nobody else is doing it.” The ads will promote 10 different principals key to journalistic standards, with messages such as “Journalism is committed to telling the truth”; “Journalism is getting answers” or “Journalism is essential to democracy”. Toronto Star reporter Chantal Hébert said she hopes the campaign sparks a conversation among the public about the role journalists play in shedding light on important issues, but also in driving public engagement. “I believe a better informed public will come to better informed decisions, but more importantly, a well informed public is one that will be more engaged.” Campaign sponsors include Metroland Media Group, The Toronto Star, Ryerson School of Journalism, Unifor, and the Canadian Association of Journalists.

Jane is a beautiful, sweet 43 year-old nurse and looking for the right man. Jane has never been married, has no children, and no baggage. She loves football, hockey, going to concerts, and being outdoors. She is very down to earth, and easy to get along with. She is a great listener and always wants to help others. Jane is a very charitable person; she donates and volunteers for many causes including children’s charities and animal shelters. Jane doesn’t drink or smoke, she is not one to go to bars, and she has had a hard time meeting the right person in her small community. She is always up to try new things and is open to new experiences. She’s a bit shy at first, and she is nervous about dating, but really wants to meet the right person to settle down with. She is very open and accepting of people, she’s non-judgmental, and cares more about who someone is on the inside rather than the outside.
