Local ridings stay Liberal in Ontario election Hudak’s pledge to cut 100,000 public sector jobs hurt PCs, say Scarborough candidates MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Ontario Liberals won all six Scarborough ridings again in the provincial election because their Progressive Conservatives opponents were handicapped by the party’s pledge to cut 100,000 public sector jobs, veteran PC candidates agree. Tory Leader Tim Hudak, who resigned last Thursday night when the Liberal majority win became clear, had coupled his plan to trim public jobs with a promise to cut one million new jobs in the province. ‘Political suicide’ But three PC candidates running in Scarborough, trying to break through against Liberal incumbents, said residents in their ridings only seemed to hear the part about job cuts. “It’s almost like a political suicide,” said Raymond Cho, who ran for the party in Scarborough-Rouge River and suggested, as results came in, that Hudak may have been too honest. “Why did he mention cutting jobs? You could just stay with creating jobs and the (Liberal government’s) scandals,” added Cho, a city

councillor who speculated he would otherwise have won the riding, and Hudak a majority. “People pay more attention to the cutting than the creating.” The PCs could also have provided more details about the job reductions, saying, for instance, that front-line workers would not be cut, said Cho, though he later added

he was glad those jobs would not be disappearing. Trying to unseat Soo Wong in Scarborough-Agincourt, Liang Chen, who also lost to Wong in 2011, said she had recognized the 100,000 job cut could hand victory to the Liberals. “When I heard it, I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is going to be 2011 all over again,” she said. “He could have said, ‘We

will have a hiring freeze.’ It’s really how you package, how you use your words.” People understand the provincial government is too big, but the 100,000-jobs pledge gave the Liberals ammunition, said Wong, a University of Toronto Scarborough associate dean who argued the Liberals are good at making cuts to services “behind the scenes,” citing their recent

changes to physiotherapy coverage for seniors as an example. “They’re not good at admitting what they’re doing.” In ScarboroughGuildwood, Ken Kirupa, a realtor trying to beat Liberal MPP Mitzie Hunter for the second time in less than a year, also said the job cuts “overtook all the other issues” for riding residents, thanks partly to aggressive advertising by interest groups during the campaign. “That message, I think that was the one that killed this election.” People were scared about losing their jobs, though they reacted differently when told there would be an attrition process to produce the cuts, said Kirupa, adding residents also didn’t seem to have much faith in the PC promise to create a million jobs. New Democrats also failed to break through in Scarborough, which has stayed Liberal red since 2003. They came second in the two local ridings with a NDP MP: Scarborough-Rouge River, where the party, with repeat candidate Neethan Shan, was in a three-way race with Cho and Liberal Bas Balkissoon, and in Scarborough Southwest with

a newcomer, Jessie Macaulay. They otherwise did not come close to winning. Shan, who is also the ONDP president said he was not disappointed with the party’s provincial campaign, which he argued was positive, compared with “a campaign of fear and who to not vote for.” He said he didn’t want to speculate on why Scarborough residents voted as they did, but suggested it was tough to unseat incumbents. “The familiarity of someone always helps.” Balkissoon, one of those incumbents, conceded the race in his riding had “three known names” and was a bit of a challenge. Still, he did not let on Thursday he had been worried. “I knew it was going to be close, but I had my solid supporters,” he said. “The most I could lose was 10 or 15 per cent, and then I could pick up some.” The Green party ran candidates in all six local ridings, and did best with Anthony Navarro, who got 1,548 votes in Pickering-Scarborough East, and with David Del Grande, who received 1,492 in Scarborough Southwest.

ith last week’s majority government win by the Kathleen Wynne Liberals in the provincial election, her party has been given a strong mandate by voters in Toronto and surrounding areas to make transit a top priority over the next four years. Her victory can also be interpreted as strong support for the Metrolinx Big Move transit plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) which was first introduced under the Liberal government of Premier Dalton McGuinty back in 2008. The election of Rob Ford as Toronto’s mayor in 2010 and a Liberal minority in the 2011 provincial election saw transit become highly politicized. Talk on how it would be paid for and the debate between LRTs and seemed never-ending. our view subways In the last year, though, we have started making decisions Voters should on our transit future and how to for it. The provincial, city and expect action pay federal governments agreed on an extension of the Bloor-Danforth on transit subway from Kennedy station to the Scarborough Town Centre. The city approved a property tax increase of 0.5 per cent to help pay for its portion. Yet, it comes up repeatedly as a municipal election issue with mayoral candidates Olivia Chow and David Soknacki saying the Scarborough subway extension should be scrapped in favour of an LRT. As was mentioned at a mayoral candidates’ debate this week, discussion of a Scarborough subway extension should be finished. Every Liberal MPP elected in Scarborough supports that subway extension, and made it a key part of their campaigns. Any thought that this could now be changed with a new mayor of Toronto or change in councillors cannot be accepted by Wynne and her majority government. The same goes for a number of other transit plans across the Greater Toronto Area. Voters are expecting transit action from the Liberals. Wynne’s party took away seats from the only PC (Doug Holyday in Etobicoke-Lakeshore) and three NDP incumbents in Toronto due in no small part to her transit plans. The Liberals also gained seats in the 905 communities around the city including Newmarket-Aurora, Durham, Burlington and Halton. Wynne now has an opportunity to take that mandate and do the right thing when it comes to transit expansion across the GTHA.

World Cup on the menu for street festivals Alas, I was busy Saturday night and unable to make it out for both Italy’s crucial opening game victory over England in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the subsequent street celebrations. From what I hear, I missed the party of the year. Oh well, cosi e la vita. The good news is I should more than make up for it this week as I’m planning to take in the immensely popular quadrennial Toronto street festival that occurs during the first round of every World Cup: A Taste Of Every Country That Qualified For The Group Stage. The gala runs from Thursday afternoon through Sunday evening and I’ll be there with bells on, from start to finish. (Being an objective columnist, I’ll be wearing the bell colours of every nation in the tourney.) with Iran at Argentina. Anything with Argentina should be lip-smacking, good, don’t you think? Then I’d like Ghana at Germany, please, followed by BosniaHerzegovina at Nigeria. I’m not expecting anything too fancy from either of those.” Waiter: “I’m with you on that score. And for Sunday?” Jamie: “For starters, Russia at Belgium. This has delicacy written all over it. Then, Algeria at the Korea Republic. Nothing jumps out at me here. Whatever you decide is OK. And I’ll close things out with what could turn out to be the creme de la creme of this festival - Portugal at USA.” Waiter: “Really? Now, are you referring to Portugal with or without?” Jamie: “With Ronaldo, of course. Without him? World Cup fans cheer their teams The World Cup is off to a roaring start in Brazil with a number of surprising results that have had Toronto soccer fans either cheering joyfully or shaking their heads in frustration. The tour ney opened Thursday afternoon with host Brazil scoring the game’s first goal into their own net. After that, Brazil recovered and went on to win 3-1 over Croatia, setting off cheering in a number of Toronto neighbourhoods including Little Portugal. Fans of Portugal itself were not cheering on Monday, though, as their team fell 4-0 to Germany. On Friday, the tournament forged an even stronger link with Toronto soccer fans as Jonathan de Guzman, who grew up in Scarborough and played with the North Scarborough club until he moved to Holland at age 12 to further his soccer skills, was in the starting-11 for the Netherlands game against

defending World Cup champs Spain. The Dutch easily won that game 5-1 with de Guzman on the field until the 62nd minute when he was subbed out. There’s still plenty of games left to come in first-round Group play at the tournament, which wraps up next Thursday, June 26. Down syndrome no limit for Scarborough man Derek Stevenson achieves black belt status with local martial arts club jean ko din jkdin@insidetoronto.com

ight students from the Energy Martial Arts Academy graduated with a black belt last Saturday but one student stood out among them. Derek Stevenson is 36 years old and has been practicing the martial art, nerkin ouj, for 15 years. He also has Down syndrome. “I didn’t think he was going to get here,” said Lindsay Stevenson, Derek’s

mom. “We sat down with the grand master and they told me that he was ready to take the test. Ever since we told him in November, he’s been very gung-ho about it.” Own pace Derek practices at the Academy three times a week for 45 minutes. With the support and enthusiasm of his instructors, he was able to move through

the belt rankings at his own steady pace. “I got stronger. I got better,” Stevenson said. “My friends taught me to be a good student.” His family was looking for something constructive for him to do after graduating from Maplewood High School at the age of 21. Energy Martial Arts had opened their Scarborough location a year earlier, just five minutes away from the Stevenson home and so, Lindsay decided to bring

Derek to a trial lesson. “He hasn’t looked back since,” Lindsay said. “It’s kept him fit and active. It’s given him a goal and a purpose.” Persistence Derek’s instructor is Salvador Caruncho, who has worked with Derek from the beginning. “Every student has their limits,” Caruncho said. “Derek doesn’t fear his limits. He has a persistence

and consistency that I seldom see.” Apart from martial arts, Derek is a general fan of sports. He plays softball every Thursday with the Scarborough Sliders from Special Olympics Ontario. He also plays floor hockey in the winter. He also volunteers at the Scarborough YMCA two days a week, delivers Meals on Wheels once a week and volunteers on bingo nights at the Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities.

“I want parents of children with disabilities to know that they can do anything they want with encouragement,” Lindsay said. “We’re lucky to get so much support from the staff.” The Energy Martial Arts Academy held a demonstration and black belt ceremony last Saturday at Blessed Pope John Paul II Catholic Secondary School.

The three-day event will also include cricket clinic for kids from the Ontario Cricket Association, led by professional cricket player Umar Bhatti and well-known coach Nadeem Khokhar. Mammoliti keeps playing his games Parkdale is not a “pedophile district.” Deputants who come before city hall committees asking programs be spared are not de-facto communists. A secret cabal of left-wing Toronto councillors have not been wiretapping the councillor from Ward 7. I could go on for an entire column, correcting the fanciful and offensive assertions that have fallen from the lips of Giorgio Mammoliti over the years. But like so much low comedy, it would simply underline the same point: Mammoliti, who is one of the longer-squatting denizens of Toronto council’s lunatic fringe, is pretty creepy. If it weren’t for our cracksmoking mayor doing the heavy lifting, Mammoliti could even be an international embarrassment for this town. Of course, one person’s international embarrassment is another’s local-boymade-good, and Mammoliti’s constituents in northwestern North York have been happy enough with his behaviour to send him back to city hall

It is classic Mammoliti game – one that he’s been playing since 1995, when he left a one-term stint on Bob Rae’s NDP backbench at Queen’s Park to join former mayor Mel Lastman’s North York Council, then went to Toronto council as amalgamation took hold. Mammoliti became wellknown mostly in the breach – his lack of discipline when it came to spending his office budgets, his limelight-seeking behaviour, his demagogic mischief-making and his changeable loyalties. Which all, as I may have mentioned earlier, points to one truth: Mammoliti is pretty creepy, and he seems to revel in it; it is a game to him. For the rest of us, it’s a shame. The mayor’s follies aside, when our neighbours speak about the dysfunction and absurdity of Toronto city politics, they are thinking in large part about Mammoliti – amusing himself with verbal pugilism, at the expense of almost everyone else.

Port Union Road may get second lane Ten years after it was proposed in a study, residents along Port Union Road in Scarborough could be close to seeing the road get a second northbound lane. To r o n t o c o u n c i l o n Tuesday, June 10, approved completion of an amended environmental assessment for the project. The City of Toronto com-

pleted the assessment in 2004 for widening Port Union from Lawrence Avenue East to Island Road, but the work wasn’t done. Updating the study allowed council to restart the process, as well as to include continuous bicycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the road, a two-way turn lane north of Josaly Drive, and

other features. A report said costs for the project are estimated at $3.8 million, and the funds could be made available by 2016. Approval of the study means people will have 30 days to send comments to Ontario’s environment ministry after the city issues a completion notice. – Mike Adler

GO adds weekend train trips for summer With spring turning into summer, GO Transit has added more weekend Lakeshore line train trips. Additional morning and evening trips are planned for both the Lakeshore east and west lines Saturdays, while Sundays will see six eastbound and seven westbound trips added to make the number of trips on both days the same. SPECIAL PRIDE PARADE TTC PASS The TTC is offering a special pass for attendees of this year’s Pride Parade as part of Toronto’s hosting of World Pride festivities, a global celebration of LGBTQ communities that starts Friday. For the parade weekend, June 28 to 29, an unlimited pass is available for groups of up to six people with a maximum of four children. TDSB chair Bolton steps down Chris Bolton officially stepped down as both chair of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and trustee of TrinitySpadina Friday, June 13 for undisclosed personal reasons. “It i s w i t h mixed emotions and much deliberation that I have come to this decision,” he said in a statement. “For personal reasons, I am leaving a role to which I aspired over 12 years ago, as the essential policy role for an educator.”

Bolton previously worked in the education field as a teacher, vice-principal, principal and a consultant. He has served as trustee for Trinity-Spadina (Ward 10) since December 2003. Donna Quan, TDSB education director, also released a statement, acknowledging Bolton’s resignation and thanking him for his service. “Chris has been a passionate and committed advocate for public education for more than 40 years as part of the TDSB and its predecessor board as a teacher, vice-principal, principal, trustee and chair – a role that he has held for the past four years,” Quan said. Quan will work with TDSB vice-chair and Willowdale Trustee Mari Rutka, who currently takes over responsibility as chair while the full board is expected to discuss the next steps to appoint a new chair.

The 48th annual Robbie International Soccer Tournament, featuring teams from Jamaica, Trinidad, the

Scarborough hosts world’s largest charitable youth soccer tourney United States and Canada, has blossomed into the largest charity youth soccer tournament in the world. While The Robbie might not have the hype and expenses of Brazil, it has been a launching pad for many young players who went on to compete at soccer at colleges, universi-

ties, club teams, pro teams and representing Canada on the international scene. Toronto FC’s Dwayne De Rosario played at The Robbie as did Scarborough’s Jonathan De Guzman, who was in the lineup for The Netherlands first game at the World Cup last week. The same holds

true for Canadian Olympians Diana Matheson and Jonelle Filigno, who both compete in the National Women’s Soccer League. This weekend, at parks across Scarborough, North York and others in the Greater Toronto Area, scores of young soccer players will take to the fields for a non-competitive tourney that involves boys and girls under the age of 12. Zoo holds wine tasting event in support of preserving rhino wildlife JEAN KO DIN jkodin@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Zoo is organizing an event on Thursday, June 26 as large as the rhinoceros itself. Raise Your Glass For Rhinos is a unique evening, learning about the nuances of wine and the protection of a species at risk. For $70 per ticket, each guest will be given four Schott Zwiesel wine glasses from Fortessa Canada to taste four different wines. Host

Exhibits where they will learn about the exploding demand for rhino horn in the Southeast Asian black market. According to Angie Snowie, wildlife care keeper at Toronto Zoo and rhino protection advocate, rhino horn is the most expensive product in Southeast Asia’s black market, selling for about $65,000 per kilogram. “In the past seven years alone, (rhino) poaching has increased about five thousand per cent,” said

Snowie. “At this rate, rhinos will potentially be extinct by 2020.” The rhino horn is often used in traditional Asian medicine. It is claimed to be an aphrodisiac, a cure for the common cold and even, a cure for cancer. However, Snowie says that there is no scientific evidence that rhino horn can cure anything. “[The horn] is made of keratin which is equivalent to what’s in your hair and nails,” said Snowie. “If this were true, all the hair and

nail biters of the world would be cured of cancer.” The Raise Your Glass for Rhinos event is replacing Toronto Zoo’s Bowlathon for Rhinos campaign. Proceeds go to the Lewa Wildlife Conservatory that protects many different species in Kenya, including 73 black rhinos and 61 white rhinos.

Man charged after photos of children uploaded online with sexual comments A man faces child porn charges after photos of children were uploaded to the Internet with sexual comments. Police allege a man took photos of children in public places in the Greater Toronto Area. “The man uploaded the images onto the Internet and added sexualized comments onto the images,” police alleged in a news release. On June 12, police executed

a warrant in the Pharmacy and Steeles avenues area. Allan Bradley Vanderspek, 33, of Toronto, has been charged with making available child pornography, making child pornography, accessing child pornography, distributing child pornography and two counts of possessing child pornography. Wait continues for restoration work to Taylor Massey area MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com As the federal government prepares to spend tens of millions to establish a national park in the Rouge River Valley, another east Toronto waterway continues to wait for its own restoration. Taylor Massey Creek, a Don River tributary flowing through western Scarborough and East York, was recently considered to be one of Southern Ontario’s most polluted watercourses. City of Toronto officials managed to shut many of its worst pollution sources down several years ago, but the creek, badly constrained by development for decades and starting with water running off Highway 401, is still in poor physical shape. Five years ago, a volunteer group called The Taylor Massey Project had proposed a $4.3-million package of projects, Reach by Reach, it had hoped the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority would adopt to restore the creek as part of a new Don Watershed Plan. The Authority has not adopted Reach by Reach, however, and though the City of Toronto has featured the creek is certain plans, it doesn’t seem to have produced a unified strategy to improve the creek. In a release this week that made its frustration clear, The TMP urged supporters of the waterway to attend a city meeting on a master plan for the creek this Thursday, June 19, at Scarborough’s Warden Hilltop Community Centre from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. “The TMP believes that the creek needs significant investments to address water quality and quantity, the elimination of fish barriers, extensive streambank naturalization, bylaw enforcement,” and other measures to improve its health, the group said. The city says the master plan would identify immediate restoration needs for Taylor Massey and priorities for future restoration of creek channels. Erosion has exposed sewers along the creek and gabion walls built to stabilize its banks have failed in many places. The city’s objectives, according to a presentation last November, are to control erosion, protect sewer infrastructure and restore storm damage while improving aquatic habitat. The presentation also stated the master plan does not aim to reduce pollution flowing through stormwater into the creek, which joins the East Branch of the Don west of O’Connor Drive.

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Two years after announcing the Rouge National Urban Park, Canada’s federal Conservative government has tabled legislation to make it reality. A formal announcement of the Rouge National Urban Park Act, attended by politicians and local farmers Monday in the Markham hamlet of Cedar Grove, prompted Scarborough Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker to say the dream of creating a national park in Scarborough’s Rouge Valley “is on the cusp of coming true.” Federal authority over the land will stop any future sales of a “national wildlife treasure,” said De Baeremaeker, a member for decades of Save The Rouge Valley System. “It is a spectacular feat nobody thought was possible 25 year ago.” But not all of the Rouge River Watershed’s longtime defenders were happy with the size of the proposed federal park or its divided focus on agriculture, recreation and education. The park spans more than 57 square kilometres and crosses over private properties and municipal and provincial lands within Scarborough, Markham and Pickering. Conservation groups such as Ontario Nature and some MPs, such as Scarborough-Guildwood’s John McKay, say they want to see federal airport lands included, expanding the park to 100 square kilometres. Jim Robb, general manager of Friends of the Rouge Watershed, said his group and others have asked Premier Kathleen Wynne not to transfer Ontario’s lands - about two thirds of the park - until standards of past Rouge Park plans are met. Since it was established in 1994, the park’s priority has been to protect the river’s fragile ecosystem, but “that priority is not in the legislation the government’s put forward,” said Robb on Wednesday. “The park they’re proposing is actually not as good as the park they already have.” Parks Canada’s concept for the Rouge NUP calls for “people’s park” which will be the first of its kind in the country. The agency has insisted it will protect the ecosystem of the Rouge. The park is home to a rich diversity of natural and cultural heritage, such as a Carolinian forest, internationally significant geological outcrops from the interglacial age, artifacts dating back more than 10,000 years as well as some of Canada’s oldest known Aboriginal historic sites and villages. The park, when it was governed informally under provincial control, included the Toronto Zoo and the city’s former Beare Road landfill site in Scarborough.

What would your contributuion to the government of Canada be as an MP?

■ When I am meeting with residence around our community, I continually hear how tired they are of the scandals and lack of attention to issues that actually matter to hard working, middle class families. From improving our transit infrastructure, which will shorten our record commuting times, to focusing on creating well-paying jobs, to improving our immigration system, the residents of Scarborough-Agincourt continually tell me they want a progressive voice to represent their issues in Ottawa.

■ Growing up in Scarborough-Agincourt, I have seen the very best this community has to offer. I have been truly blessed to attend school and have my family still live in this community. I have a passion for public service and have dedicated my life to giving back to our community that has given so much to me and my family. Watching the how out of touch the Harper Government has become with the struggles of the residents of Scarborough has inspired me to put my name forward to represent their voices.

■ I want to join with the residents of Scarborough-Agincourt in thanking my friend Jim Karygiannis for his 25 years of service to our community. Jim worked hard to represent the many diverse communities which make up Scarborough and our community is better for it. I hope to build on the legacy of Liberals in Scarborough-Agincourt including Jim, Gerry Phillips and Soo Wong and be a strong voice for our community.

■ It is time to the federal government to put the focus back on hard working middle class Canadians. Justin Trudeau and the Liberal team have been working hard to shine a light on the struggles of families that are finding it harder to stretch their paychecks and make ends meet. Here in Scarborough we have seen our commuting times getting longer with little action from the federal government. With a Trudeau Government, we will invest in transit and return the government’s focus to improving the lives of middle class families.

■ The main local issue in this campaign is who can best manage the economy and keep taxes low. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has proved to be the strong, stable leader we need to keep our economy growing, to keep adding jobs and to keep taxes low. We will balance the budget next year, and be one of the first developed nations to do so since the depths of the global recession. Combine that with the $30 billion in taxes we’ve been able to cut since 2006, and you have a government that focuses on the priorities and concerns of residents.

■ I decided to run in this election because I feel I have something to contribute to our communities, and I believe in lower taxes and keeping our families safe. Scarborough-Agincourt has been a Liberal riding for 25 years, and it’s time to change that. As a teacher for the last 10 years, I understand that focusing on having a strong future for children needs to be a priority. We need to create quality jobs and keep taxes low in order to allow the freedom for Canadians to succeed. I know I can bring that to Scarborough-Agincourt.

■ I’m different from Mr. Karygiannis because I’d be part of a government that listens to Scarborough-Agincourt residents, and fights for our priorities. For too long Liberal leader after Liberal leader ignored us, and by electing me we’ll have someone part of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s strong, stable team of MPs. Unlike Justin Trudeau, I don’t believe marijuana should be legalized – we need it off our streets and away from our playgrounds. And unlike Justin Trudeau I know the hard work it takes to balance a budget.

■ I can contribute to the government of Canada because I’m the only candidate in this election running for the governing party. We can have a voice at the table, which is something Scarborough-Agincourt has lacked for almost a decade. By voting Conservative, by voting for Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and by voting for me, we’ll have a strong advocate for our local issues and someone who will stand up for the safety of our streets and communities, and keep drugs out of the hands of our children.

■ When talking to people in the riding, I hear deep concerns about growing household debt, the long wait to get healthcare, the lack of jobs, and recent changes to immigration policy. What is clear is that Liberals and Conservatives have taken Scarborough for granted. While hospitals in the GTA have received millions in funding, the two in Scarborough have received nothing. And, while many in Scarborough are new to the country, those affected by changes to immigration policy have not been able to get the information they need because they have been unable to count on their MP.

■ I came to Canada when I was five. Just like many immigrants, my parents struggled to learn the language and make ends meet but they came here to ensure a better future for me. Through my work at my own immigration law firm, I have seen how unfair and unequal our immigration, healthcare, transit, and childcare programs are. I love my work but it is only by participating in politics that I can make the necessary changes to the laws to make them more fair for everyone.

■ We are different in many ways. The Liberals have taken Scarborough for granted. they helped the Conservatives make it harder for families to reunite here in Canada and gave away tens of billions of dollards to large corporations while leaving the small businesses to struggle. I am a small business owner and an immigrant. I face the same challenges as many in this community and I have the same dream to build a better future. I am here to fight for the investment Scarborough deserves. With my skills and experience, I will be a strong voice for Scarborough.

■ I would be the voice for the change and investment Scarborough deserves. As an immigration lawyer, from reuniting families to advocating to improve the system, I spend every day helping those who are falling through the cracks. As an entrepreneur, I understand how important small businesses are to our local and national economies. The NDP has made creating good, family-supporting, middle-class jobs by helping small- and medium-sized businesses a priority. I am excited to join Tom Mulcair and his team as they continue to stand up to Stephen Harper as a strong united opposition.

■ The health and well-being of residents is a major issue in the riding. A stable source of household income, a high-quality and affordable education, and a pristine environment are essential ingredients to ensuring vibrant and healthy communities. For many, however, the reality on the ground is far from this: families have to juggle multiple jobs, education is unaffordable, opportunities are few for newcomers, seniors receive inappropriate care, all while our crumbling infrastructure leads to congestion and pollution. This status quo is unacceptable.

■ I am an ordinary person with a commonsense vision that we deserve much better than what we are getting. I was born and raised in Africa and immigrated to Canada with my family. I understand the challenges newcomers endure to contribute to our wonderful country. It therefore pains me when I see the bureaucracy in Ottawa destroying our beautiful social fabric by using divisive politics for partisan interests. I am determined to work hand-in-hand with all to support the development of a sustainable knowledge-based economy.

■ Unlike Mr. Karygiannis and members of other parties, Greens are not forced to vote along party lines, cheer and jeer in Question Period, or recite the same meaningless talking points. I am committed to voting and speaking out in the best interest of our community. As a Green MP I would be free to address issues that are important to my constituents, and I would not be subordinated by back-room party strategists and electioneers. I am motivated by our need to focus on dialogue which addresses the issues that affect us all.

■ I am a firm believer that when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping – for sustainable solutions. From fears of plummeting job prospects, to security and the destruction of our fragile environment, there has never been a greater need for more Green MPs in the House of Commons. MPs owe it to their constituents to make policy decisions that are economically viable, socially progressive, and environmentally sound. Whether in the government or opposition, I will strive to be a humble public servant who stands up for the common person.

At a meeting of Scarborough Community Council this

week, local politicians hearing about another ambitious idea - a new park and market building covering what is now a section of McCowan Road near Scarborough Town Centre - spoke about the need for boldness and creativity in reviving Scarborough’s spirit. One councillor, Mike Del Grande, remarked he was embarrassed by how the Scarborough Civic Centre, post-amalgamation, has turned into a place with “rips in the carpet” and faulty lighting. “We seem to be getting second best all the time,” he said. Organizers have said they hope the campaign will show residents “Rotarians are relevant,” and promise to follow up the June 24 meeting with others “geared to each cultural group” in Scarborough.

Mayor notifies city clerk of his return david nickle dnickle@insidetoronto.com Rob Ford’s coming back. On Tuesday, Mayor Rob Ford made it official, informing the Toronto City Clerk by letter that he would be ending his leave of absence later in the afternoon of June 30. The letter, which is signed by the mayor in cursive script and also upper-case printing as MAYOR FORD, was submitted June 16, but dated June 2. In it, Ford advises “that I will be returning to City Hall on Monday, June 30th 2014, in the later portion of the afternoon, to resume my duties as Mayor of Toronto.” Ford asks that locks on his office “be restored to their state prior to my departure, for 1:00 p.m. on the date of my return.” Ford has been on a leave of absence since the end of April, seeking treatment for alcohol addiction at a Muskoka rehabilitation facility. He took the leave after several videos emerged, one

showing him smoking what appears to be crack cocaine in his sister’s basement, others recording him apparently inebriated making sexually explicit remarks about mayoral candidate Karen Stintz and making various racist, sexist and homophobic statements. photographed Although seeking treatment at a residential facility, Ford was photographed numerous times out in public in Bracebridge. A woman who says she met him in rehab was also arrested for impaired driving behind the wheel of Ford’s SUV. Toronto Council met twice in his absence, as Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly took over all of Ford’s remaining duties. Ford will arrive back the day after Toronto’s Pride parade – an event that Ford has always taken pains to avoid in the past, saying that he traditionally spent Canada Day Weekend with his family

in Muskoka. Ford’s brother and campaign manager Doug Ford has maintained that Rob will also restart his campaign for reelection, which he suspended during his two-month stint in rehab. Toronto councillors anticipated Ford’s return with trepidation. Toronto-Danforth Councillor Paula Fletcher said she appreciated the break. “It’s been pretty calm and scandal-free,” she said. “I’m hoping that he really seriously applied himself at rehab and that he will come back a changed person. That’s my wish for him.” Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, who represents the LGBT community along Church Street and has been active in helping organize World Pride this year in Toronto, said she was glad that the mayor wouldn’t be back for Pride Week.
