MUSIC MONDAY: Grade 5 students Amisha Ramcharran, left, and Amrita Mahadeo join the mass choir of three local schools in the performance of the song, ‘ISS: Is Somebody Singing’, at Mary Shadd Public School, as they join in the nation-wide simultaneous sing-along of the tune with more than 600,000 students across Canada and astronaut Chris Hadfield aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Music Monday. Hadfield and singer Ed Robertson, formerly with the Barenaked Ladies, co-wrote the song. For more photos from the event, please see page 3.

The Dorset Park Community Hub is like a tree, and donations to the United Way are “like a seed planted in our community soil” that made it grow, area resident Abeer Ali said at a celebration this week. “It’s a new life for us,” she said of the converted Kennedy Road plaza building that finally gives tenants from nearby apartment highrises a place to meet and, as Ali put it, to create their own memories. Bryan Heal said people in Dorset Park are thinking about their future too. “Residents and community members have taken ownership of this initiative right down to its very bones,” said Heal, a member of the Dorset Park Neighbourhood Association. >>>CEREMONY, page 11
Torontonians have opened their hearts after a Malvern school playground was torched Monday night. Toronto District School Board spokes-
person Shari Schwartz-Maltz said parents at Mary Shadd Public School on Hupfield Trail were devastated after vandals burnt down the “beautiful little playground” that they spent years fundraising for. The $20,000 play scape was installed in late August. “It was a real true labour
of love. Parents wanted to have a kindergarten playground for their kids,” Schwartz-Maltz said. At 9 p.m. Monday, the playground was destroyed. The cost to replace it isn’t covered by insurance. “Fortunately, we put out the word
yesterday through the media,” SchwartzMaltz said yesterday morning. And donations have been pouring in since. “It looks like the money has been raised,” Schwartz-Maltz said. “This goes to show that the Scarborough community...have tremendous hearts.”

Where are the worst roads? T
he Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is inviting road users again to name the province’s worst roads in its annual campaign launched this month. We want to hear from you too – which road in your neighbourhood deserves being named the worst? It can be a stretch of road strewn with potholes as Dufferin Street is known to have – and not surprisingly received the people’s choice award as being the worst in the province in last year’s CAA campaign. Maybe it’s poorly marked lanes or a bottleneck that constantly results in slow and excess traffic. Community input is important to help prioritize road construction work especially in the city where day-to-day driving takes a major toll on the road infrastructure. The country’s largest auto club our view suggested the provincial government establish a dedicated fund road work to be paid through You can help for provincial gas tax revenues. The province currently reaps prioritize $2.3 billion annually through its construction excise tax, stated CAA spokesperson Faye Lyons. More will be necessary for the continual upkeep of roads to help lessen gridlock and subsequently improve economic productivity. We encourage all residents to provide feedback on how to tackle this issue. Several ideas are already out there that warrant further discussion such as Premier Kathleen Wynne’s recent announcement during the provincial budget this past week that new tolls to use high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes could raise money for transit construction. Metrolinx has also recently recommended revenue tools for transit infrastructure improvement such as introducing parking space levies and a dedicated portion of sales tax on consumer goods, which will be debated by Toronto Council later this month. In the meantime, the money that is already earmarked for road improvement work should be spent on areas of the city that need it the most. Let us know which roads in your neighbourhood are seemingly neglected and need more attention by emailing us at scm@insidetoronto.com To learn more about the CAA campaign, visit www.caaworstroads.com and make your selection for the province’s worst road. Results are expected to be revealed next month.

Bike rental: go small and concentrated
U
sually it doesn’t make sense to reward a faltering business with more investment. Business types advise everyone steer clear of an idea after it has already failed, never mind twice in the same market. When applied to the challenges facing Toronto’s troubled Bixi bike rental program, these recommendations seem obvious. From 2001 to 2006 Toronto hosted North America’s most popular bike sharing program, only to face financial ruin due to multiple factors. Two years ago the city entered into a 10-year agreement to loan up to $4.8 million to provide a bicycle rental program in Toronto. Already the program is in financial trouble. Should the city decide to stop the red ink, we stand to recover less than $1 million of public funds. Put another way, the potential loss is equivalent of giving away to each of the program’s subscribers an
david soknacki beyond the headlines $850 bike. Recognizing that the mayor’s executive committee will be unreceptive to giving bike sharing a third try, the chair of the TTC proposes to ask TTC staff “to explore how it could be a complement to the TTC.” If the issue boils down to finance, then TTC’s conclusion ought to be obvious. But, we need to consider that in every other one of the 375 bike-sharing programs around the globe public subsidy is required. If Toronto wants to have a bike-sharing program, a realistic analysis must conclude that our program will need subsidy from taxpayers as well. In return for public funds, there are quantifiable benefits in a reduction of congestion, a means to connect transit users to their closest transit stop, and to
speed up short trips. Thanks to well-documented studies of both successes and failures worldwide, we know what can be done to maximize bike usage, and how to minimize public subsidy. In order to achieve these benefits, Torontonians need to recognize that bikesharing is most effective in the downtown core, or in other very dense areas, such as on Yonge Street between Sheppard and Finch. It is not a program that works well in much of the suburbs, mainly because users want to drop their bikes off at convenient stations. In London and Paris, these are 300 metres apart at most. On the other hand Toronto has just 80 stations. As a result, we have the choice of making an impact in a concentrated area, or suffering low usage rates. In many ways the constraint of starting small and concentrated serves so many purposes. Even with the huge amount of experience, uncertainty and
obstacles remain. For example, we know that London’s transit organization integrates their bike-sharing program with their facilities, and allows payment on their transit card. Can that be done in Toronto? There are similarities and differences between our needs and objectives, other models, and how well others’ experience applies to our situation. In short, it is disappointing, but perhaps not surprising, that Toronto’s latest bike-sharing venture is in financial trouble. To repeat the mistakes of the past, by simply expanding the existing program will almost guarantee failure and annoyance from the public. On other hand, the opportunity of the present to review Toronto’s experience, then to focus on what works, will give bike-sharing a realistic and viable future. David Soknacki is a former City of Toronto councillor and budget chief. Contact him at www.soknacki.com

Nothing wrong with executive Courage Would suburban needed on users take advantage committee deferring debate city council of available transit? To the editor: Re: ‘The perils of not articulating a transit vision,’ Beyond the Headlines, April 25. Columnist David Soknacki has just confirmed my position on transit. He points out, correctly in my opinion, that in Scarborough and Etobicoke “almost 60 per cent of residents use their car as their primary means of transportation.” The inference is they have no intention of using mass transit even if available. Frankly, they know there is no way transit can be designed to take them where they want to go in a reasonable time. Downtown is already well serviced. That could be improved by the “Downtown Relief Line” that if extended north at both ends would actually

serve both suburbs fairly well. Why should people in either place pay for transit that one won’t use and the other doesn’t need. The improvement on Bloor Street from Avenue Road to Jane Street by fixing the traffic signals could be spread across the whole city for a fraction of the cost of Metrolinx and would have more impact on actual travel times. David Vallance
I am taking issue with your editorial stance and in David Soknacki’s column. I agree with Soknacki in one respect, that Toronto council has no cohesive vision for transit as simple geography and topography are the most salient factors in transit choices between downtown and the suburbs. I disagree that Mayor Rob Ford’s decision to postpone the ‘tax’ debate till Metrolinx puts their cards on the table is wrong. The province, through Premier Kathleen Wynne, has stated she will not necessarily be bound by
the province or Metrolinx permission to levy any new taxes based on what will be an acrimonious council debate that is likely to further polarize the councillors. A simple majority decision by council would not be enough for a decision; it would have to be two thirds to have any weight in my opinion. Failing that, you may as well tell the province and Metrolinx “do what you will as we have no consensus”. And finally this is too big a decision not to be decided by the electorate, both municipal and provincial. No projects are going to be delayed until after those elections as there are many funded projects already under way.
a municipal decision and since the province will institute and collect such taxes, the ball is really in their (her) court. I would much rather be in a position of not giving
Ross Vaughan
To the editor: Re: ‘Freedom of Information,’ The Agenda, April 23. Councillors Sarah Doucette and Paula Fletcher put forward a motion to allow all councillors’ records to be open to freedom of information requests. Good for them. I was rather surprised to learn these records weren’t already open to the public and that it was just the mayor who was required to do so. I really hope they get somewhere with this proposal. It is nice to see someone elected to public office willing to stand up and display some individual courage when it is needed most. So I say good luck to these two courageous ladies. Tourist-friendly projects needed
I
n little over a week, Toronto Council will finally get a chance to make the call on a casino in the city’s downtown. It’s a good bet, so to speak, that council won’t be voting yes to a casino in the core of the city. Opposition on the council floor and on the ground is not unanimous, but decisive, and it seems unlikely that the provincial government will sweeten the pot of Toronto’s hosting fee to sway enough to make a difference. And so, no casino, at least not downtown. The debate, once that final vote happens, will be over. Or will it? It may be true that Toronto doesn’t need or want a casino — but that’s not to say Toronto doesn’t need, or really want, more infrastructure to promote tourism and jobs and investments. Currently, the city’s core is developing very effectively as a mass of new, shall-we-say efficient
housing in the form of tall condominium towers filled with very tiny apartments. In the midst of those, Toronto does have assets: museums and galleries and sports venues and even a certain amount of convention space. As city manager Joe Pennachetti noted in his report outlining the benefits of a casino, Toronto needs more convention and trade show space near the downtown if it’s to be competitive with other destinations. A casino, Pennachetti said, would be an easy way to kick-start that development. That sounds like a mission statement. Council should, if they reject that casino plan, start looking at other ways to redevelop downtown properties in such a way as to draw visitors.
Building a giant new convention centre with nothing but property tax and municipal debt might not be a good idea. But finding ways to create incentives for that sort of development would be a good use of, say, the city’s economic development committee’s time. Toronto could look at how well it promotes its existing convention space and see if there’s a way to maximize it. In the past, Toronto’s done well for tourism fueled by a relatively open border, a low Canadian dollar and a thriving theatre scene. The dollar’s too high, and border crossing is a pain, and the theatre scene isn’t what it used to be. A casino wouldn’t, by itself, have made up for all that. A concerted, positive effort based on consensus, investment and genuine civic pride, though... that might be just the thing.

Island airport: money can be better spent
F
ew people know it, but there have been eight airports that have operated within the boundaries of what is today the City of Toronto. The very first airport in Canada opened in 1917 in Long Branch on the site of what would later be the Lakeview generating station. The same year saw the Leaside aerodrome open, where on June 24, 1918 the first official package of airmail was delivered from Montreal. By 1939, six of the eight airports ever to operate in Toronto were closed due to the fact that they were unprofitable to run and maintain. The two that remained open that were the private airport run by de Havilland in Downsview and the Toronto island airport. Now known as the Billy Bishop Airport, the airport on the island has always been controversial since it was first proposed in 1929. It exists today solely due to politics and taxpayers’ dollars. The site of the airport had originally been a popular amusement park and was
joe cooper guest column the location of many homes and cottages, all of which were demolished or moved. The 215 acres of land for the airport were created from silt dredged from the floor of the adjacent harbour which, when completed, sat empty for several years. In 1935 it was proposed that a million dollar vehicle tunnel be built under the Western Gap with the premise that it would be used for the construction of the airport. The reality was the tunnel was intended to be used to open the islands to vehicular traffic and commercialization, with official city hall plans showing such. The islands would be part of a 45-mile ring road that had been in the works since 1921, with Lakeshore Boulevard being the only part actually completed. While the tunnel work began that year, a change of the federal government brought an end to the tunnel’s funding. The airport was finally built
in 1938 primarily as a political project, with City of Toronto paying for it as well as Malton airport. The airport came to be heavily subsidized by taxpayers, so finally in the 1960s the Toronto Harbour Commission wanted to scrap it. The plan was to build a new airport at what is now the Leslie Street Spit and turn the old obsolete airport into a model of urban development. The proposal was to introduce a modern, pedestrian friendly environment into the city core. However, while the project looked good on paper, it brought too much commercialization to the island. So the project quietly died in 1972, and taxpayers have kept the airport operating for the benefit of the business elite who use it. It’s time to make better use of the tax money by investing it into rapid transit that would make access to Pearson beneficial for everyone. PC government would bring subway to Scarborough: Hudak LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Bashing the minority Liberal g ov e r n m e n t ’s b u d g e t , Conservative leader Tim Hudak promised to bring a subway to Scarborough if he wins the next election. Calling a subway an issue “near and dear” to Scarborough residents, Hudak said a Progressive Conservative government would extend subways east to Scarborough and north to Richmond Hill. “A world-class city is built underground. They build subways,” he said in North York Friday surrounded by PC candidates from Scarborough, North York and York Region who will run in the next provincial election.
“My (subway) plan north to Richmond Hill, east to Scarborough (would) treat Scarborough residents as full citizens of the city of Toronto.” BUDGET The Conservatives will vote against the budget introduced last Thursday, with the hopes of forcing an election. That leaves the fate of the government in the hands o f N D P l e a d e r A n d re a Horwath. “People want change. They know Ontario needs to go in another direction” Hudak said at the Radisson Toronto East hotel near Victoria Park and Hwy. 401. “We’re spending beyond our means and scaring away
jobs.” A Conservative government would bring jobs to the province, respect taxpayers and build subways in Scarborough and north of the city, Hudak said. The Conservatives will balance the budget by reducing the size and cost of government which will encourage businesses to expand and hire, lower taxes, treat affordable energy as a cornerstone of economic growth, cut the more than 386,000 pieces of legislation by a third, fix outdated labour laws and modernize the apprenticeship system to create 200,000 new skilled trades jobs, he said.

According to police, a 2011 Ontario Student Drug Use Health Survey by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health showed 14.3 per cent of grades 7 to 12 students admitted to using prescription drugs for nonmedicinal use, and eight per cent admitted to using over the counter cold medications to get high. Jane’s Walk in Steeles/l’amoreaux MOSAIC CELEBRATION: An enthusiastic crowd of residents and art lovers gathered in a basketball court at Birchmount and Finch on Sunday afternoon to participate in the fifth annual Steeles L’Amoreaux Jane’s Walk. The resident-led walking tour featured stories of how residents of this priority neighbourhood have come together in recent years to effect positive social change in their community. The centerpiece of the event was the basketball court in the Glendower apartment and townhouse complex where the walk began and ended. The wall surrounding the court is the site of a series of mosaics created by Glendower residents. The mosaic project began in 2007 when residents partnered with Art Starts – an awardwinning community arts organization. Photo/COURTESY

Toronto Challenge helps city’s seniors Mayor Rob Ford this week urged all Torontonians to take the 2013 Toronto Challenge or, if they can’t, to support people who do. When it comes to rais-
ing funds for the annual fun run and walk, few can match the enthusiasm of Josie Mullens. The Weston woman already has pledges of $1,465 for the
event, which she got, she said, just by walking up to people and asking them to sponsor her for a dollar or more. “I broke my record,” Mullens said this week at

Bendale Acres in Scarborough. “People give me 20, people give me five, people give me one. It all adds up.” The Challenge, which starts the morning of June 9 from David Pecault Square at Metro Hall is one of the year’s most important events for the 10 city-run long-termcare homes and more than 50 other agencies caring for seniors across Toronto. Michelle Dube, a local broadcaster and the event’s honourary chairperson, said the five-kilometre run and onekilometre walk raises funds for independent living, and
enhances lives in long-term care by helping to buy renovations in city homes or things as simple as books with larger print. Wheelchair trips Mullen, who is 65 and working with the York West Active Living Centre for older adults, said the Challenge provides seniors with “trips, wheelchairs, stuff like that.” Seniors at Bendale - at 302 beds, one of the largest municipal rest homes - were warmed up Monday by Caring Clowns, several
Ryerson University-trained volunteers who also plan to join the Challenge next month. Lynda Del Grande, a retired teacher who leads the troupe, thinks she’ll probably be wearing an outfit similar to what she wore for the launch: a lace veil, clown nose, an apron over her dress, and mismatched stockings. Registration forms are at Toronto Public Library branches, civic centre and community centres.

BASEMENT Menu labelling called FLOODS ARE ON for by Board of Health THE RISE. Chain restaurants in Ontario should be required by law to list calories and salt in their menu items as prominently as they display their prices, Toronto’s Board of Health said recently. Councillors on the board accepted a recommendation from Toronto Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown calling on Premier Kathleen Wynne to require such menu labelling for restaurants with 10 or more outlets in Canada or gross revenue of at least $10 million a year. Restaurants would also have to post statements on their menus about calories and sodium recommended daily. The board said if the province has not passed a law requiring menu labels by Sept. 1, McKeown should report back this fall on a pro-
posed city bylaw to enforce the same requirements. In its background information, the city’s health department says calorie and sodium levels are found to “vary widely from restaurant to restaurant,” even for meals which appear similar to customers, because ingredients, portion sizes or side dishes are different. Many chains do provide nutritional information to customers who ask for it, the department says, but “very few people ask.” Residents invited to get creative The Love Your Lentils Canada competition is split into two divisions: food bloggers and home chefs. Home chefs are be asked to take one of Smith’s existing lentil recipes and add their own twist to it, while

bloggers are asked to submit completely unique lentil recipes. Visit www.loveyourlentils. ca to submit adapted (home chefs) or original (bloggers) lentil recipes. Then, invite family, friends, fans and followers to cast a ballot for your recipe – there is a chance they could win, too! Love Your Lentils Canada challenge details: The Top 10 recipes in each segment as voted on by the general public will then be reviewed by Smith and his team, who will select the Top 3 recipes in each category. The winning blogger and home chef will be flown to Saskatchewan and hosted at the Delta Bessborough.

Theatre re-creates South Pacific atmosphere Maria Tzavaras scm@insidetoronto.com
F
rom the moment you step into the theatre for Scarborough Music Theatre’s production of South Pacific, it feels as though you are walking back in time and right into this Second World War drama. This is because the cast and crew went above and beyond simply building a set for this show. Instead, they created 12 massive, hand-made palm trees that line the perimeter of the theatre and decorate the stage, as well as several authentic islandinspired set pieces, transporting everyone into the ironic beauty and hardship that was wartime in the beautiful South Pacific. Soldiers and nurses live side by side in this 1943 musical with music and lyrics by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and book by Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan, that not only depicts the realities of life in volatile and unpredictable wartime, but also the inevitable love stories
Photo/RAPH NOGAL
The cast and crew for Scarborough Music Theatre went above and beyond for the current production of South Pacific.
that took place. In this story, nurse Nellie (Jill McMillan) falls in love with a rich French widower, Emile (Mark Tingle), who unbeknownst to her has two young, half Polynesian children, Ngana and Giselle (Venus Crouse, Isabelle Gu). There is also the love story between Lt. Joe Cable (Rob Murphy) and a young island girl,
Liat (Catherine Uy Huculak), whose mother, souvenir-seller, Bloody Mary (Regina Simon), has befriended the Americans, and has chosen Joe to marry her daughter. This show has several uplifting and fun musical numbers such as Nothing like a Dame, where the G.I.’s lament about missing females; and Honey Bun,
a colourful act that Nellie and company perform as part of a Thanksgiving variety show they host. There are also great comedic characters such as Luther Billis (Jason Silzer), who brings the laughter with his coconut bra ensemble and cheeky antics and Bloody Mary, who shines with her funny one-liners as well as beautiful musical numbers like Bali Ha’i. But there are also the more serious scenes with Capt. George Brackett (Jim Hyslop) and Commander William Harbison (Craig Estrella), planning dangerous mission strategies and rallying the men to pull them off. And while the love stories have their sweet and tender moments in musical numbers such as This is How it Feels, a beautiful duet by McMillan and Tingle, and Younger Than Springtime, sung by Murphy and Huculak; the theme of racial prejudice is also woven into the plot because of the taboo nature of interracial marriage and families of that time period. It’s a truly a fun and entertain-
ing snapshot of how people persevered during wartime. The set and costumes create the perfect island atmosphere, and the collective performance is polished, light-hearted and easy to watch. McMillan has a charismatic stage presence and wows the audience with her natural portrayal of nurse Nellie. She also has a unique singing voice that was lovely in solos and duets, especially with Tingle, who plays a romantic and likeable Emile. There is so much talent in this show it would be impossible to list the particulars in detail, but this show is just a delight to watch and an enjoyable performance. Note: this musical is about three hours long, so make sure you are ready to settle in for awhile. South Pacific runs until May 18, 8 p.m., at the Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd. Matinees are sold out so one has been added on May 11 at 2 p.m.

City’s most vulnerable students still at risk: report JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A new report by Social Planning Toronto is asking both the Ministry of Education and the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) to take steps to ensure money earmarked for some of the city’s most vulnerable students is spent as intended. The report, dubbed Triple Threat to Equity: Changing Priorities for Toronto Schools, suggests money given to the TDSB by the ministry through the Learning Opportunities Grant (LOG) is largely being diverted elsewhere. The LOG is intended to ensure proper supports are in place for at-risk students, particularly those in low-income or single parent households, new Canadians and those whose parents did not complete high school. Those students have been shown to be more likely to fall through the cracks.
the board “considerable latitude” in determining how the money is to be spent, he feels it should be clear the board should still use the money for programming for vulnerable students. “In 2011 to 2012, there was
$128 million going in (to the TDSB through LOG funds) but only $40 million going out into the kinds of programs those funds should go to,” he said. Social Planning Toronto executive director John Campey said children
living in poverty and those for whom English is not a first language are falling further behind as funding is diverted away from support programs. A former teacher at Ryerson Elementary School, he noted fund-
ing was once plentiful for support programs. “When I first started there, it was right after amalgamation and there were all kinds of supports,” he said. He left the school board for a spell, returning after five years and said he was “shocked at how much was lost.” Students marginalized Alejandra Bravo, who also sits on the TDSB’s Inner City Advisory Committee and works for Maytree, said by appropriating funds from programs designed to serve ESL students and those living in poverty, the board was further marginalizing those who already may not feel they have a voice. “When we use the money for its intended purposes, we actually have amazing outcomes,” she said. “Denying (marginalized students) those entitlements actually creates an undue barrier to success.” Jarvis Collegiate Institute Student President Ya Chen Liu pointed out at her school, many students benefit from special programming to help those at risk of being left behind in their education. The school serves a diverse population with many new Canadians, and Liu said LOG monies given to the TDSB should actually go toward students in need so they can “have hope to become a success in life.”
Large amount of money “The issue is (the ministry) allocates quite a large amount of money but the (school) boards have a tendency not to use that money for the types of programs it should be used for,” said David Clandfield, former TDSB trustee and TDSB inner city advisory committee member. “When (boards) have trouble balancing their budget, they dip into this funding.” Part of the problem lies in the fact the ministry gives boards latitude as to where the money is to be spent. Clandfield said while the ministry’s own documentation gives

Local subway extension ‘funded project’, Stintz says RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Approving the construction of a Scarborough subway extension won’t have any bearing on the fate of other planned city transit projects, said the chair of the TTC. Even if city council votes in favour this week to include an estimated $500 million eastern expansion of the Bloor-Danforth line in a list of transit projects to be paid for by new dedicated taxes and fees, Karen Stintz said the provincial government and Metrolinx would still have to agree to a “scope change” on its planned light rail transit line to replace the Scarborough RT line. “Whatever happens with the Scarborough subway, happens,” said Stintz following her May 7 lunch-hour speech at the Toronto Region Board of Trade (TRBOT). “If council votes to convert the RT into a subway and Metrolinx agrees
we can make that scope change, the next question is how we will pay for it. “But it’s not going to displace any other transit project because it’s already a funded project on the books.” Despite concerns regarding the TTC’s cost estimates for the proposed three-stop underground extension from Kennedy Station to McCowan Road and Sheppard Avenue, Stintz was confident with her staff’s project estimate of $2.3 billion considering the costs to complete a six-station extension of the Spadina line, scheduled for completion in 2016. “We’ll have to do some more work on those numbers, but I stand by the $2.3 billion project estimate,” she said. During her 30 minutesplus speech to the audience of business and civic leaders in attendance at TRBOT’s downtown headquarters, Stintz re-affirmed her support for new revenue tools under
consideration by Metrolinx to fund future transit. Referring to herself as a “fiscal conservative” Stintz said the importance of transit to the Toronto region’s prosperity merited pushing for new dedicated taxes and user fees – even if it meant furthering a divide with Mayor Rob Ford, who vehemently opposes the proposed revenue tools. “I am frugal when it comes to government spending but I know that transit and subways are not built for free,” she said. “Common sense demands that we find a way to pay for the transit infrastructure we need.” TRBOT CEO Carol Wilding, who introduced Stintz, said it was “happenstance” the chair of the TTC was addressing the Board on the same day city council voted in favour of debating recommendations for the revenue tools.

Scarborough’s Robertson set for lacrosse season NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com You would be hard pressed to find any athlete, pro or amateur, with more years in a single organization than Jordan Robertson, who will lead his Toronto Beaches Jr. A lacrosse team into their season and home opener this Monday at Ted Reeve Arena. “I’ve only ever played for the Beaches my whole life,” said the team captain who lives minutes from Ted Reeve Arena at Warden and Danforth avenues in Scarborough. “I think I started playing lacrosse when I was four, I guess. And I’m turning 20 in September of this year so 16 years it’s going on now.” He’s referring to club lacrosse, of course, as he has definitely also provided his lacrosse services to his school, currently with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and previously with Birchmount Park Collegiate. While his longevity of
points (37 goals, 32 assists) in 20 games in 2012; 58 points (34g, 24a) in 20 games in 2011; and 50 points (24g, 26a) in 22 games in 2010. And last fall, he led his University of Toronto team – which plays field lacrosse (on a football or soccer pitch) as opposed to box lacrosse (which is played in a hockey rink) in scoring with 40 points (29g, 11a) in 12 games and in the process was named a 2012 Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association West Division All-Canadian. He has set the bar high for himself and said it does bring some pressure into the Photo/COURTESY upcoming Jr. A campaign. Jordan Robertson, blue sweater, led his University of Toronto “Yeah, but I think it’s someVarsity Blues field lacrosse team in scoring this past fall. The thing that comes with a little Scarborough resident will be wearing his Toronto Beaches bit more experience in the Jr. A jersey as the team opens the season at Ted Reeve. league. As you get older, you kind of learn the tricks and service is worthy in itself (16 the province – the equivalent you learn how to adapt and I years with one organization – of major junior A for hockey guess your skills grow a little and he’s only 19), his scoring – and he’s led his Toronto bit the more you play. prowess is actually the more Beaches Junior team in scor“And it’s helped the past B:10.375” relevant news hook. ing for all three years he’s season bringing in some The Jr. A league he plays in suited up for them, increasing new talent. (his teammates’) work than my work.” When asked the highlight of his lacrosse career, so far, however, the multiple team scoring titles did not factor in. “I did win something that’s dear to me and dear to the people in the Beaches – an award called The Jamieson Kuhlmann Award.” The Ontario Lacrosse Association created the award in memory of the young 15-year-old lacrosse player who died in a freak lacrosse accident in May 2008. Kuhlmann had also grown up through the Beaches lacrosse program and was a former Malvern Collegiate student. The Ontario Lacrosse Association created the award for the ‘midget player demonstrating high proficiency in field lacrosse combined with outstanding achievement in citizenship, together with high standards in academics.’ “I think I was 15 when I won that, it was fairly close to when the incident happened
– that was pretty dear to me and sticks out in my mind as a personal achievement.” If there’s been one disappointment, it’s no doubt the lack of post-season action that has predated Robertson’s tenure with the team, but which he said he hopes will change this season. “We’ve got a good core group of guys back – we didn’t lose very many players. We have a lot of players on the team who have a little bit more experience now and kind of know the way the league works and the calibre they have to play to.” The team is also in its second year since an organizational overhaul brought in new management, led by head coach and general manager Bruce Codd. Robertson has lived in the same home all his life, attending Birchmount Park C.I. and Birch Cliff Public School.

After pondering numerous athletic scholarship options, including offers
from division 1 basketball programs in the U.S., Kimberley Taylor has made the decision to stay and play north of the 49th parallel. Taylor, 17, who grew up in East York and recently moved to the Beach, has committed to St. Francis Xavier University, based in smalltown Antigonish, Nova Scotia, after entertaining dozens of proposals both in Canada and to the south. She started her youth basketball career with the Scarborough
Basketball Association, “I really liked the university, the community spirit,” she said on why she chose the eastern Canadian university. “Everyone in the town really supports the university. There’s a lot of pride there.” The six-foot power forward/wing attended St. Joseph’s College School where she helped lead the downtown Toronto Catholic high school to the city finals in 2012, 2011 and 2010 – earning athlete of the year honours
