Scarborough AT THE PLATE Health Fair this Saturday Whether you’re new to Canada or lived here all your life, finding the right health care when you need it can be challenging, say organizers of this month’s Scarborough Health Fair. A relative of Suraiya Gangaram, a 31-year-old slain in her Danzig Street townhouse this month, is asking people to give so that Suraiya’s daughters can have a better life. “It’s not fair to them that their mother has been taken away from them because of someone’s cowardly act,” Ashley Gangaram, a first cousin, said in an interview this week. “When your parents are gone, what do you do?”

This year, people visiting the school on Bridletowne Circle north of Warden and Finch avenues can meet staff of the hospital’s Geriatric Assessment and Intervention Network (GAIN) Clinic for the elderly, and social workers who can talk to residents about “advance care planning.” They can also learn about the Hong Fook Connecting Health Nurse-Practioner-Led Clinic on Midland Avenue which, despite its complicated name, lets people who don’t have a family doctor get most of the services a doctor could offer. “The Scarborough Health Fair is an integral way in which we can come together as a Chinese community to help each other understand health care and share knowledge and information that can be helpful >>>CHINESE, page 25

Suraiya and her siblings, she added, were born in Trinidad and Tobago and emigrated to Canada together in the early 1990s. They lived with grandparents for a time, but were split up. Family members were already grieving because two of Suraiya’s sisters were murdered in Trinidad last July, said Gangaram, who hopes a trust fund will at least ensure the girls are “stable and have everything they need.” She also expressed hope the fund could grow large enough to further the girls’ educations, helping them to “actually make something of themselves, since their fathers aren’t around and their mother’s gone.” >>>VIGIL, page 23

Left, the exterior of the new Scarborough Civic Centre branch of the Toronto Public Library. Above, the Toronto Public Library’s director of branch libraries Anne Bailey leads a tour of the new Scarborough Civic Centre location on Tuesday. She shows off a pillar that uses coins and a tape measure embedded in resin to enable children to measure themselves.
New civic centre branch ready for its readers MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com More than a library, the Scarborough Civic Centre Branch helps turn an old municipal hub into a real neighbourhood. Condominiums have sprung up around the civic centre, but the area’s residents – more than 33,000 of them – are isolated, hemmed in by streets meant for driving and given few public places where they can enjoy themselves. The Civic Centre library, at long last, starts to change
this. “The library is your home away from home. It’s a space for everyone, a place where everyone’s welcome,” Anne Bailey, Toronto Public Libraries’ director of branch libraries said during a tour this week. T h e s l i g h t l y- c u r v i n g building which opened on Wednesday, its supports and overhead beams wrapped in warm spruce from Quebec, is on the south side of the Raymond Mor iyamadesigned civic building. The slopes behind the Civic
Centre on Borough Drive saw little use for decades, but the windows of the new library, with 14,500 square feet on one floor and an outdoor reading garden, look out on a new wider sidewalk. Across Borough Drive is Civic Centre Park (sometimes called Hand of God Park), which suddenly seems like a more attractive place. Next to the $10.3-million branch, work will be underway this summer on a $1-million Civic Green. Both will connect through accessible walkways to the
Civic Centre and Albert Campbell Square. The former City of Scarborough wanted to build a library too, but before this week, people in the area had to make do with a Bookmobile stop at Scarborough Town Centre. Library branches are community cornerstones, and requests from the community before construction were “quite broad and far-ranging,” Bailey said. Because it’s stocked to serve the neighbourhood, many of the branch’s books are in Chinese, Gujarati and
Tamil. Bailey showed visitors its Digital Innovation Hub – only the third one TPL has opened in the city – where a 3D printer was churning away. Library users, including students and budding entrepreneurs, she said, can operate it after taking a course (though these fill up fast). Nearby is the KidsStop Interactive Early Literacy Centre, with activities children and their caregivers can do together. They can consider how different seeds in the cast resin
towers grow, count a whole line of pennies, turn a wheel to make letters move. Ribbon-cutting celebrations took place on Wednesday, but there’s a community open house with children’s activities Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The branch is open 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit torontopubliclibrary.ca The Civic Centre library is Toronto Public Library’s 100th branch.

Caregivers are heroes, but they also need support

ssuming the role of caregiver for a loved one may seem a natural decision when a friend or family member is struck with dementia, or acute or chronic health problems. But it can be a long, burdensome and isolated journey and those who make these sacrifices need to make sure they’re getting the supports they need. That’s why we at Metroland Media Toronto, in partnership with Downsizing Divas, are once again bringing The Caregiver Show to our city on May 30. Presented by Saint Elizabeth Health Care, which offers at-home services for family caregivers, the free show is a chance for caregivers to discover that they’re not alone. There’s a wealth of resources available to help make what can be a difficult job that much easier to undertake. According to the Alzheimer our view Society of Canada, the physical psychological toll on family May 30 show and caregivers is considerable – with dedicated to 15 to 32 per cent experiencing depression at one point or caregivers another. While people care for others out of a sense of personal responsibility and love, they need to be prepared to deal with the stress involved. At this year’s show, hear from speaker Teepa Snow, who has more than 33 years of experience in geriatrics, and is an occupational therapist currently working as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. Health and wellness expert Rose Reisman will also be speaking at the show about the importance of taking care of one’s own health and nutrition. The Caregiver Show is your chance to connect with others sharing similar circumstances and learn tips on how to navigate opportunities for government support. Discover that you’re not alone – in fact, you’re among almost eight million family caregivers in Canada. Get first-hand advice from experts, explore products and see demonstrations from our participating organizations. And don’t miss the Rest and Relaxation Zone, to help you replenish your spirit and energy levels. It takes a hero to dedicate oneself to the care of another, but even heroes need support sometimes. The show is Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Centennial College Progress Campus’ Athletics Wellness Centre, 941 Progress Ave. To register for the free event, visit www.caregivershow.ca

All eyes, and feet, on the $50-million jackpot To join the office Lotto Max pool or not to join. That’s the question. The jackpot stands at $50 million for the fifth week in a row. With 33 extra $1 million “maxmillion” prizes also up for grabs Allen has stepped up to try and resurrect the one in our company. He’s been on a roll. Actually it’s a Tim Hortons croissant that fell on his chair. Anyhow, I’m the lone holdout. Allen: “So? Last chance to pick up the rear on our happy dance line when we win. What’s it gonna be Jamie, in or out? Just so you know, after considerable debate the group has decided to do the Boot Scootin’ Boogie.” Jamie: “Really? Boot Scoot AND Boogie?” Allen: “And not necessarily in that order. It could just as easily be Boogie Scootin’ Boot. It depends on how we feel when the cameras are turned on.” Jamie: “That’s very enticing, Allen, but to be perfectly honest, I have my heart set
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY on doing the Funky Chicken when I win. And I’m not talking genetically modified Funky Chicken, either. When I hit the dance floor it’s the real deal or nothing.” Allen: “I hear ya. But back to the matter at hand. So what do you say?” Jamie: “I think I’ll pass. But thanks for thinking of me just the same.” Allen: “Do you mind if I ask what you have against $50 million?” Jamie: “I don’t mind at all. With 24 in your group, last I heard, if I come aboard each share would only be one-25th of $50 million, or a paltry $2 million.” Allen: “Actually, since we last spoke, we’ve more than doubled that number courtesy of accounting, HR, production support and the executive suite. You’d bring the total to an even 50. So each share would actually
drop to $1,000,000.” Jamie: “That’s it? A lousy million is all I can expect to get?” Allen: “One million big ones each is nothing to sneeze at where I come from.” Jamie: “Where I come from, that was a cough, not a sneeze.” Allen: “I stand corrected. A million big ones is nothing to cough at. That better?” Jamie: “Hardly. That’s if we’re the only winner. What if there’s more than one lucky ticket sold? Somebody from Saskatchewan always seems to win part of every big jackpot. Usually a guy named Herb.” Allen: “So, if there are two winning tickets we still get $500,000 per person. Boo hoo. We’ll cry all the way to the bank.” Jamie: “And how much am I expected to kick in for the privilege of becoming a measly 500 hundredthousandaire, pray tell?” Allen: “We’re putting in $6 each per ticket, when you
add on the encore.” Jamie: “Like I said, I’ll pass.” Allen: “Any reason in particular?” Jamie: “Yeah. I got a way better offer. Herb invited me to join his pool. It would be just me and him in it and all I’d have to fork over to join is $5. He doesn’t play encore. That means if our ticket is the only winner we pocket $25 million each and if there are two winning ones I still pocket a not to shabby $12.5 million.” Allen: “You really think you’re going to walk away with those kind of sums if you team up with him?” Jamie: “Of course not, silly billy. Obviously you haven’t been attention. No matter how much I get I won’t be walking away at all. I’ll be Funky Chickening away, baby.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. S
ports, Recreation and Leisure has been chosen as the theme of this year’s 16th annual Doors Open Toronto on Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24. The city-wide celebration will offer free and rare access to more than 155 architecturally, historically, culturally and socially significant buildings across the city – many of them chosen with a sporting theme in mind in honour of this summer’s Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Here in Scarborough, participating locations include: UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO SCARBOROUGH ANDREWS BUILDING 1265 Military Trail Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CN Tower designer John Andrews was inspired by the Highland Creek Valley landscape to sculpt his bold, megastructural vision for what was originally known as Scarborough College. The Andrews Building is considered one of the two iconic works of 20th century Canadian architecture that continue to resonate internationally. The design presents a dramatic contrast of an aggressive, utopian architecture with the Toronto countryside, framed by woods. Guests may explore the building at leisure with a guide book or take part in guided tours. UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO SCARBOROUGH - MILLER LASH HOUSE 130 Old Kingston Rd. Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The house opened in 1913 and was the summer retreat for Toronto lawyer and industrialist Miller Lash and his family. It is one of the first homes in Ontario to have poured concrete walls, which were then faced with river stone collected from the Highland Creek river bed. All of the heavy beams and truss work that support the ceilings and roofs are squared pine timbers that were milled on the property. Visitors will be given tours of the House, see historical pictorial displays, and enjoy the English-style
gardens and grounds. AFTERBURN PERFORMANCE FITNESS 21 Progress Ave. Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fitness centre is home to the city’s only dragon boat paddling pool. Visitors will learn how to stay healthy through proper prevention and active through efficient, effective and fun workouts. There will be an opportunity to try dragon boat paddling. CEDAR RIDGE CREATIVE CENTRE, ARTS & CULTURAL CENTRE 225 Confederation Dr. Saturday & Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This was the summer home for the Charles C. Cummings family. The 14-room, 5,000 squarefoot mansion was completed in 1912-1913. In addition to the main house, there is a gardener’s cottage and a stable with attached chauffeur’s cottage, known as the carriage house studios. In 1927, the house was purchased by John Fraser, a Toronto financier who greatly enhanced the surrounding gardens. In 1978, Cedar Ridge was acquired by the City of Toronto and has operated as an arts centre and gallery since. The gallery space will feature an exhibition of work by the Community Arts Guild. Visitors can browse through the studios and gardens and explore the walking trails overlooking the Scarborough Golf and
Country Club. Local artists and artisans will be exhibiting works in the gardens. CORNELLCAMPBELL HOUSE 3620 Kingston Rd. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. William Cornell, a descendant of a Rhode Island colonist who came to America in 1636, settled here on two lakefront lots in 1799. With other pioneers, he cut out Scarborough’s front road, which became Kingston Road, planted the first orchard, and built the first grist and saw mill in the township. FOOL’S PARADISE 1 Meadowcliffe Dr. Saturday & Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is the former residence of the late artist Doris McCarthy, a wellknown Canadian best known for her landscape paintings. She was elected the first female president of the Ontario Society of Artists and taught some of Canada’s most distinguished creative people. In 2015, the trust launched the Doris McCarthy Artist-inResidence Centre, which uses the home and property as a unique live/work incubator for visual artists, musicians and writers. Open Doors visitors
traditions, art, culture and modern architecture. Volunteers will be performing the Qilin (Chinese unicorn) dance and there will be chanting sessions accompanied by traditional Buddhist instruments. There will be 15-minute guided tours. The dance and chanting take place at 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
can participate in guided tours of the home. Kaeja d’Dance choreographed dance vignettes will be performed.
LASER QUEST TORONTO EAST 1980 Eglinton Ave. E. Saturday & Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The building housing Laser Quest Toronto East was built in the 1930s on what was previously nothing but farmland. Wooden ceilings and angular support beams beneath the infrastructure reflect the Art Deco period of construction. The property is approximately six hectares in size of which with Laser Quest Toronto East takes up one hectare. The best way to experience Laser Quest is to participate in an action packed mission, offered at a fee.
JING YIN TEMPLE 722 Brimley Rd. Saturday & Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jing Yin Temple is a chapter of the True Buddha School, which was founded by Grand Master Lu ShengYen. Currently there are more than five million disciples and 400 temples and cultivation centres worldwide. The main shrine displays over 50 gold-plated bronze Buddha statues. The temple is a blend of religious
SCARBOROUGH MUSEUM: CORNELL HOUSE, MCCOWAN LOG HOUSE, HOUGH CARRIAGE WORKS & KENNEDY GALLERY 1007 Brimley Rd. Saturday & Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. These buildings depict different periods in Scarborough’s past. Cornell House was built in 1858 on Markham Road in Scarborough Village and offers a look at rural farm life in Scarborough. McCowan Log House
was built in the north east part of Scarborough on the banks of Wilcott Creek. The simple log structure has a large kitchen with a cooking fireplace and has been restored to its 1850s appearance. The Kennedy Gallery was an old shed moved from the Kennedy family farm in Agincourt. The interior was renovated using reclaimed tongue and groove pine flooring, and hand grained wainscoting salvaged from the Malvern Methodist Church (1864), demolished in 1976. Visitors can tour the buildings at their leisure. Samples of baked goods will be provided. SOUTHSIDE MUAY THAI ACADEMY 2065 Midland Ave., Suite: 2 Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Originating in Thailand more than 800 years ago and known as the traditional sport, Muay Thai combines tradition, culture and athleticism. Southside teaches traditional Muay Thai techniques in beginner and mixed classes. Guided tours of the facility will showcase demonstrations including pad work, sparring, general class conditioning and partner drills. Visitors will get a feel for how athletes train in the sport of Muay Thai. A traditional wai kru demonstration, which is a cultural dance performed to pay respect to teachers, family and fellow practitioners will take place.

transit launches new trip planner wMetrolinx As the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games approach, a new trip planner from Metrolinx seeks to provide accurate travel data for transit rides taken in Toronto and beyond. Triplinx works similarly to more well-known search resources like Google Maps, although in this case it caters to transit users. You can plot out any trip made by one of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area’s transit agencies, including the TTC. The site also has a searchable stop finder, access to schedules and service updates, and information on the various transit providers’ fare rates. To use a beta version of the site, visit www.triplinx.ca bike only for some bus racks wOne
Those front-facing bike racks found on some TTC buses will be restricted to carrying only one bicycle following concerns raised by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, it was announced last week. The ministry ordered the TTC to suspend and review the use of the racks in the fall
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT after concerns were raised about sightlines for bus drivers when the racks, which carry two bicycles, were full. The restrictions apply to the articulated buses as well as a new fleet of 40-foot buses manufactured by Nova. All other TTC buses can still carry two bicycles. Cyclists can transport their rides onto a bus, but only if there is enough room. Subway busker applications wWanted:
Want to share your musical gifts with hundreds of commuters and make some cash on the side? You’ll first have to impress the TTC. The final auditions for the transit commission’s annual subway busker search don’t take place until August. But to get that far you’ll need to formally apply for a chance at an audition. There’s only room for 175 solo or duo acts and the TTC expects all applications will be in well before the deadline of Friday, June 19.
A judging panel will pick the top 74 acts over a weekend of live auditions at this year’s Canadian National Exhibition. To pick up your application package, head over to Davisville Station during regular business hours or visit www.ttc.ca zone rankles cyclists wpedestrian
It seems the decision to establish a special area for pedestrians on a stretch of John Street has rankled some cyclists. By all accounts the John Street Pedestrian Zone established between Queen Street West and Adelaide Street has been a hit with those on foot able to enjoy some more sidewalk space. But the move also takes out crucial curb space for cyclists, activists say. Some critical of the move posted pictures and videos on social media of a virtually empty pedestrian area while adjacent car and bike traffic was constrained. Gardiner’s costs must be addressed The debate over the future of the Gardiner Expressway could turn out to be a very interesting discussion about the future of Toronto. It is odd that it should be: after all, we’re talking about 1.7 kilometres or so of concrete, and the bit of roadway that is suffocating underneath. Toronto is so much more than the connection of two highways, and really, whether the city spends $900 million to rebuild it on a new configuration or about $400 million to rip it down doesn’t make for a hill of beans in most of the city. It is not a big part of the city. But it has become a big part of the debate about the city, and when Toronto politicians start to talk about it… it gets emotional. It got so emotional last week that when Toronto’s public works and infrastructure committee was faced with making a recommendation on the matter, it threw up its hands and left it all to council. Mayor John Tory is going into that council meeting intending to support the

david nickle the city ‘hybrid’ option of essentially shifting and rebuilding the ramps between the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway. It is costly, and doesn’t confer as many citybuilding advantages — but it appeals to many of the voters who might leave their mark next to pro-car Rob Ford’s name next election. But the matter of the cost is the thing, and it might be quite the thing. York Centre Councillor James Pasternak, who sits on the city’s budget committee, is a supporter of the hybrid option — but at the May 19 budget meeting, he made it clear that he wasn’t about to support it without a way to pay. And the best way to pay? Road tolls, he said — collected in a way that gave Toronto taxpayers a break. If there is any issue more historically emotional than the question of the continued elevation of the Gardiner Expressway, it is the terrifying prospect of Hwy. 407-style road tolls on
the city’s highways. Even when they haven’t been an issue — as in the 2003 mayoral race when John Tory (then a candidate) accused David Miller (soon to be the mayor) of favouring tolls on city highways — they’ve been a preoccupying issue. The city considered imposing tolls in 2008, and eventually rejected the idea because a full, regional-tolling system that included the 401, DVP and 427 would have been too expensive to set up. This would likely remains the case. But Pasternak raises an interesting issue, as council moves to consider yet another billion-dollar-or-so infrastructure project resting on the same old revenue streams: namely, if Torontonians want to start living larger, or simply according to their needs, then money is going to have to come from somewhere beyond simple savings. And sooner or later, council is going to have to start talking about what that might look like.

In the late 1970s, the world was a different place when it came to women’s rights and equality, especially in the workplace. In Scarborough Music Theatre’s phenomenal final show of the season, 9 to 5 The Musical, written by Patricia Resnik and music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, three women decide they aren’t taking it anymore and go to extreme lengths to get the respect and rights they deserve. It’s 1979 in the Consolidated office where a self-proclaimed sexist pig of a boss rules the roost. The show begins with Judy (Kate Wise), whose husband left her for his secretary, starting her first day at work. Previously a housewife, she’s nervous and it’s up to Violet (Jill McMillan), to show her the ropes. The other ladies, Kathy (Amanda Edwards-Brown), Maria (Jenna Marie) and Margaret, (Dot Routledge) are doubtful she’ll last because Judy is so sensitive, and it becomes clear why they feel that way after we meet their boss, Franklin Hart Jr. (Ted Powers).

He doesn’t see his female employees as anything more than coffee fetchers and note takers, and there is only one woman, Roz (Meg Gibson), who likes Mr. Hart because she’s in love with him. Hart is overtly demeaning and flirtatious, especially with Doralee (Ashley Medeiros-Felix). She has big hair, big breasts, and is stereotypically Texan. The other women hate her.
sleeping with the boss, but once that is cleared up, she, Judy and Violet bond in their shared disdain for him. After a night of hanging out and fanaticizing how they would kill their boss, the trio of women do one better and find a way to take over the office. From here, the story becomes even funnier as the women take care of business.

amazing
To give an example of how awful Franklin is, he has Doralee reach for a file that is clearly too high-up, and calls the male employees, Joe (Mark Evan Gallagher) and Bob (Shay Fuchs) to ogle her as she struggles to reach for it. However, don’t let her looks fool you; as soon as the boss puts her in his lap, she openly protests and makes it clear to his wife Missy (Zoe Brown), who walks in on the moment, that she has a loving husband, Dwayne (Freeyon Chung), and is not interested. Doralee is ostracized by the other women because they think she’s
The musical numbers in this show are amazing, and do not let the writer of the music fool you; there is one country song and the rest are funny and upbeat numbers, with a couple of beautiful ballads mixed in. This show is lively and funny from the start, beginning with the signature song ‘9 to 5,’ an amazingly choreographed company number, to amazing solos, trios and duets. Each cast member had their moment to shine. Wise as Judy has a powerful and beautiful voice, showcased in several songs including ‘Get Out and Stay
Out,’ Gibson as Roz is hysterical in her love-proclaiming song to the boss, ‘Heart to Heart,’ and McMillan showcases her talent in songs like ‘One of the Boys’ and ‘Let Love Grow,’ a beautiful duet with Gallagher as Joe. funny Powers is hysterically funny as Franklin, and especially in the ridiculous (but hilarious) song, ‘Here for You,’ Medeiros-Felix is magnificent in numbers such as ‘Backwoods Barbie’ and ‘Cowgirls Revenge,’ and Routledge is a hysterical as Margaret, the office drunk. If you want to see a show that showcases amazing talent, loads of laughs and great music, this is the ideal show to see. Scarborough Music Theatre presents 9 to 5 The Musical today and May 22 at 8 p.m. Matinee performances are May 23 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $27. For tickets, call the box office at 416 267-9292.

Area residents join the Danzig Street community candlelight vigil held last week in memory of murder victim and neighbour Suraiya Gangaram.
Vigil held for Gangaram >>>from page 1 During a candlelight vigil in front of 193 Danzig on May 12, a youth outreach worker for the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club collected
cash donations for the girls. Gangaram said the worker will keep the money safe until the trust fund is established. Violence among townhouses brought city-wide
attention to the West Hill street in 2012, after a gunfight wounded 23 people and killed Shyanne Charles, 14, a girl who lived in the complex, and Joshua Yasay, 23, of Ajax.

Liberal MPPs in Scarborough have a choice: Protect the people of Scarborough from even higher hydro bills – by voting against Bill 91
OR
Fall in line with the sellout of Hydro One – a one-time dead-end cash grab at the expense of future generations.
Important message to members and supporters of the Ontario Liberal Party: Even partial privatization has brought soaring electricity rates in countries around the world. Small business owners, farmers and residents cannot afford to pay more for electricity. Future generations will need the perpetual flow of hundreds of millions of dollars from our public Hydro One — to pay for public services like health care and education. If Bill 91 is passed, Liberal MPPs, the Ontario Liberal Party and Premier Wynne will be held responsible for the consequences.
There are many reasons to keep Hydro One in public hands. Visit www.cupe.on.ca for more information.

conference at police headquarters Friday. “This project has the potential to strengthen policing, and I think it has the potential to strengthen our relations with our community and enhance public trust.” Three different cameras, ranging from $600 to $1000 each, will be tested. The officers involved are members of the TAVIS rapid response team, traffic services motor squad, 55 Division primary response
After months of training, 100 Toronto police officers began wearing cameras on Monday as part of a yearlong pilot project. “We believe that body-worn cameras are a valuable piece of technology. It will provide an unbiased, accurate account of our interactions with the public,” Staff Supt. Tom Russell told reporters during a news
unit and 43 Division community response unit. “The body-worn cameras will be activated every time an officer responds to a call for service or is investigating an individual,” said Russell, adding the officers are expected to notify the public when activating the cameras “as soon as reasonably possible.” Police have developed specific procedures and guidelines on when the cameras are to be activated. The officers have also been trained
on issues of privacy and human rights. Russell said the cameras will not be recording when officers have casual or informal conversations with members of the public. “We’re not conducting surveillance on people or the community, so the officers are not going to be activating the camera and simply walking through a community and surveilling people,” he noted. Police have also delivered more

than 20,000 surveys, including 10,000 in southeast Scarborough’s 43 Division, to get community feedback. The pilot project costs $500,000, which includes the cameras, the software and the secure storage. Two of the camera models are set up with a 30-second pre-event buffer, meaning when the officer activates the device it will also capture the previous 30 seconds of video, but not audio. DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Mayor John Tory said that relaxing holiday closing laws might help get things moving faster in Toronto’s economy – but he won’t bring the matter to Toronto council if it’s just going to be another round of political gridlock. Tory told reporters on May 19 – the day after Victoria Day – that he thought Toronto business would do better if stores could open on holidays. “We in Toronto are putting ourselves at a disadvantage to municipalities around us,” he said. “Ordinarily, I would say that when we’re at a disadvantage we should correct that.” Tory noted that Toronto council has had the opportunity to change its holiday closing hours three times over the past decade and always turned away from the opportunity.
“I don’t want to this time expend the energy if that’s going to be the result again,” said Tory. “If there were people on council that wanted to show some leadership saying yes, we will address this issue in a positive way, I would entertain the discussion. But absent that, why keep having these debates all over again? That ends up in the same dead end.” Toronto council last debated the issue in 2012, when Toronto staff came forward with a plan to open stores on Victoria Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day and Canada Day, but council turned it down. calls for ban on microbeads wMP
A Toronto MP has introduced a bill to outlaw microbeads in personal care products following a vote by Toronto Council to call for national and provincial bans. Microbeads are plastic,
usually made from polyethylene, and are small enough to pass through sewage treatment plants, where they enter natural bodies of water, including Lake Ontario. Microbeads “can ultimately cause dangerous health effects in humans and other wildlife” as they enter the food chain, said Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie, who proposed calling for a ban. Toronto Council adopted this position in May. Scarborough-Guildwood MP John McKay. the federal Liberal party’s environment critic, said he had introduced Bill C-680, a private bill to ban use of the small plastic particles. Environment Canada is studying the effects of microbeads on wildlife and the environment. Members of the House of Commons voted unanimously to support an NDP motion which called for a ban on microbeads.

Smile Theatre brings cheer to The Caregiver Show angeline mair amair@insidetoronto.com Great theatre can happen anywhere and bring big smiles to almost anyone — this is Smile Theatre’s mission, which brings musical performances to special audiences such as seniors who are isolated. “Imagine taking a big musical and squishing it down into a really small compact space: that’s what we do,” says Tom Carson, general manager of Smile Theatre. The company hires professional actors who star in 55-minute shows and travel to retirement residences, nursing homes and long-term care facilities. The shows are rehearsed and created locally then taken on the road throughout the Greater Toronto Area and sometimes further. Smile Theatre will be performing at The Caregiver Show, which takes place May 30 at Centennial College’s Progress Campus in Scarborough. The Caregiver Show is presented by Saint Elizabeth Health Care, which offers at-home services for family caregivers. The show is brought to Toronto residents by Metroland Media Toronto and Downsizing Divas.
Carson said the performances have a direct positive impact on seniors because the shows include music that is familiar with their history. “So that triggers memories for them and engages them on a level that’s different than just talking to them.” As a theatre artist, he said he finds the work difficult because performing in a small activity room, cafeteria or a hallway may not offer the space a traditional theatre does. But the reward is greater.
Speakers at this year’s The Caregiver Show include Teepa Snow, who has more than 33 years of experience in geriatrics, and is an occupational therapist currently working as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. Health and wellness expert Rose Reisman will also be speaking at the show to caregivers about the importance of taking care of their own health and nutrition.
reach
Along with the guest speakers, The Caregiver Show will also feature resources, services and products along with a chance for caregivers to connect with other caregivers and with professionals in the industry. As well, there will be a Rest and Relaxation Zone to provide a little pampering and replenishment and a chance for caregivers to take care of themselves. The show goes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Centennial College’s Progress Campus, 941 Progress Ave.
“The reason you are doing this is to reach those folks, who are there, who are just not going to see anything like this if you don’t go there.” And the quality of actors is at par with who is performing on the big stages across Ontario, Carson said. “The actors you see - at The Shaw Festival or in a Mervish Production those are the same people you will see in a Smile production in a little nursing home in the middle of nowhere.” he said. Although Smile Theatre does not employ music therapists or base its creative work on science, Carson said

Smile Theatre will be at The Caregiver Show Saturday, May 30 in Scarborough. The theatre troupe takes large-scale musicals and creates performances, such as Anne of Green Gables, pictured, that can be performed in small spaces to isolated seniors.
the work the troupe does has an impact on the audience. He said it’s difficult to gauge if this approach to theatre is working, but, recently, after a show a caregiver said, her mom, who is 98 years old, hasn’t said a word in three weeks and they were worried about her. The caregiver

said, during a performance she saw her mom tapping her foot and smiling and humming along. Smile Theatre presents 250 performances in a season from September to June. The company’s home base is in the Annex at Bloor Street and Spadina Road.
