inspired by the area that writer/director Steven Matthew Hoffner grew up in. Hoffner described the area as a unique makeup of culture that is still exactly same as it was during his high school days. “The idea came from my lead actress Kearsten Lyon who grew up in the area with me,” said Hoffner. “It’s the same characters up to the same activities.

Local filmmakers will be featured alongside Canadian and international talent at this year’s Scarborough Film Festival. The opening gala on Tuesday, June 3 at 7 p.m. will kick off the six-day event with two films from Scarborough natives. Cliffside is a short film

It is about a former film executive that finds herself on a 24-hour adventure in New York City with a young writer. Writer/director Lex Sidón’s cast list includes Scarborough-

Nine-year-old Maya Murphy was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called primary ciliary dyskinesia when she was just four months old. The prompt diagnosis meant early treatment and a positive prognosis. “We’re so fortunate that Maya was diagnosed at such an early age,” Maya’s dad Shaun said. “She will grow up and be 100 per cent normal. If she chooses to run in a marathon when she gets a little bit older, she’ll be able to.” But many with PCD aren’t so lucky. “So many children are misdiagnosed for years and years,” said Maya’s mom Paula. “Some kids don’t get diagnosed until they’re in their teens and by then the damage is permanent in their lungs.” PCD is a condition that causes a defect in the action of the cilia (microscopic hairs in the airways that keep the lungs, sinuses and ears free of debris). About 50 per cent of people with PCD, including Maya, also have their heart and other >>>ANNUAL, page 14

Late Scarborough doctor Charlebois remembered MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Dr. Peter Charlebois, a Scarborough physician who wrote about the life of Louis Riel and the history of Canadian paddleboats, loved old music, and always felt a need to help others, died one year ago today. His passing on May 29 at the age of about 85 was noted by the Canadian Medical Association, which published little information about him. That was how Charlebois wanted it, but there are people in Scarborough who believe more should be said about his remarkable life. One is Hassan Dabbous, 59, a former patient whose friendship with his doctor deepened when the two men realized they had a common interest, working for the poor. Dabbous had started a bread bank for people around Kennedy Road and Eglinton

Avenue, close to where Charlebois had his family practice. For about three years, before he fell ill in 2010, Charlebois drove Dabbous and the bread donated by a Don Mills bakery to the Kennedy-Eglinton area every Monday night, chatting on the way about math, science, philosophy and history. The only subjects they disagreed on were religion and God, said Dabbous, since his friend Charlebois was a “very scientific person” who steered clear of politics and religion. “He said life is here and now. I said it’s here and now – plus,” Dabbous recalled this month. The two created an informal group, Eglinton Kennedy Community Against Poverty, hoping to find a permanent home for the bread bank, but in Charlebois’s absence Dabbous carried on his work alone. Born in Penetanguishene, he met his wife Rita while both attended

the University of Ottawa. They had nearly 60 years together. “My life with Peter was like being in heaven,” she said this week, adding he never raised his voice to her during their long marriage. After working in Toronto hospitals as an anesthetist and respiratory specialist, Charlebois chose what is today The Scarborough Hospital’s General campus. The couple settled in the area, said Rita, because Charlebois “didn’t want to be downtown, where it’s too busy.” He eventually started a family practice, and was known for his especially considerate manner. “He was a very friendly man and had lots of time with his patients. I was sad when he retired,” said a patient, Beulah Bennett, while another, Paul Roth, wrote a note saying he missed Charlebois a lot and remembers him in his thoughts and prayers. Another patient, Elgin

DR. PETER CHARLEBOIS

Barrett Sr., said he owes Charlebois “a debt of gratitude.” In 2001, he wrote, Charlebois helped Barrett’s late wife Valerie obtain a proper diagnosis for a condition that would have caused paralysis in her, and “because of his extraordinary interest and operation, saved her life. His professionalism left a lasting impression on me.” In private life, the doctor was often left tired by his busy schedule. Still, Rita, a toxicologist whose first

Century Vaudeville stage performances, originally recorded on wax cells, on a trip south from the bakery. In 2010, the Winnipeg Free Press reported Charlebois had attempted to donate a family collection of 56,500 uncatalogued recordings, most of them on long-playing records, to the University of Manitoba’s music faculty. The university declined the offer, to the consternation of Charlebois, who told the newspaper the recordings were in boxes stored in a “family owned music hall that’s been closed for 50 years” north of Toronto. He and Rita had no children. Charlebois is also survived by a younger brother, Paul, who this week said Charlebois was a reserved man and a public tribute is “the last thing he would want.” He declined to comment further.

language is French, said her husband always took time to prepare her for appearances in court as an expert witness, something she said helped her career tremendously. His book, The Life of Louis Riel, was published, as was Sternwheelers and Sidewheelers: the Romance of Steamdriven Paddleboats in Canada. “He was interested in so many things,” said his wife, but “not a talker” about them. Charlebois was a pain specialist, and thought it was unfair some people in Toronto could not afford dental care even when rotted teeth lessened their job prospects and left them in pain. He supported the Toronto Oral Health Coalition and Jason Jones, one of his patients, was the subject of several Toronto Star articles. Charlebois was an avid collector of old musical recordings. A reporter can recall the physician’s delight at listening to early 20th

Local protest calls for Sheppard subway, not LRT line RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A fully-funded light rail line is planned for Sheppard Avenue East, but a Scarborough residents’ coalition believes it can muster enough pressure to overturn the project and build a subway line instead. The Sheppard Subway Action Coalition (SSAC) took to the intersection of Kennedy Road and Sheppard Avenue on Monday morning to hold a public demonstration in favour of subways. For about 45 minutes, members of the group and some local PC provincial election candidates occupied all four corners of the busy intersection carrying placards and

handing out pamphlets about the benefits of a Sheppard subway over the LRT. SSAC lead organizer Patricia Sinclair said a Sheppard East subway line could be completed by 2019 – two years before the LRT – due to past provincial approvals still in effect and the availability of two tunnel borer machines (TBMs) still in possession of the TTC for its ongoing Toronto-York Spadina subway extension work. “We’ve got the engineering capabilities, we’ve got the construction capabilities, we’ve got to get smart,” said Sinclair. “Why are we in Toronto always lagging behind everywhere else in the world? It doesn’t make

any sense.” Sinclair said her group had calculated a $2.75 billion price tag, or $250 million per kilometre, for the subway plan to replace the 13-km LRT route to run along Sheppard between Don Mills subway station to east of Morningside Avenue. The line could also connect with the Sheppard “stubway” between Don Mills and Yonge-Sheppard station and eventually provide a continuous connection west along Sheppard. According to the group, federal contributions could come for the project from a previous allocation for the Toronto light rail projects, along with an additional $888 million coming from the Build

Canada infrastructure fund. Along with the federal monies, Sinclair said the province could then contribute a billion dollars, with the city’s portion coming from various sources including developer levies and casino revenues, but no new tax raises. “There’s other ways to pay for it without having to tax the taxpayer anymore than we’re paying,” said Sinclair. She said the “multi-partisan” group was planning at least one more rally along Sheppard Avenue before the June 12 provincial election, and was also planning to invite Scarborough Liberals to attend. For more information on the rallies, visit www.shep-

pardsubway.com “We’re inviting them to change their minds about putting light rail down Sheppard,” said Sinclair. Scarborough-Agincourt PC candidate Liang Chen and her supporters also attended the event, along with Scarborough-Guildwood PC candidate Ken Kirupa. Chen, whose campaign office is on Sheppard, said subways are a better long term investment than light rail and would not inconvenience cars. “What’s being proposed is for the surface and this is the biggest problem,” said Chen who is running in Scarborough-Agincourt to unseat incumbent Liberal Soo

Wong. “People want the most convenient way to travel from point A to point B. The LRT fighting with cars is going to be problematic, and people don’t want that.” TTC user Louise de Barry, who was waiting for a bus on Kennedy, said there were merits to the Sheppard subway plan. But de Barry said healthcare and education were more crucial than funding new subways. “I personally believe money could be allocated somewhere,” said de Barry. “Subways are fine, but to me they’re not a priority.”

Excitement over World Cup builds

T

he World Cup soccer championship officially kicks off June 12 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a game between the host country and Croatia, but the excitement in Toronto is already starting to build. Short of being in Brazil, Toronto has to be the best place in the world for soccer fans to watch the World Cup. Most residents are already very familiar with how our city gets all dressed up and celebrates World Cup. Beyond the flags waving from cars, there are vendors selling hats, shirts and flags, and fans gathering in locations across Toronto to catch the action. Everybody will be talking soccer between June 12 and July 13, when the tourney wraps up with the championship game in Rio. There are 32 teams taking part in the World Cup and Toronto has significant our view demographic links to many of those teams. For instance, the Italian, Greek, Portuguese, German, English, French and Dutch diasporas are large and well established throughout the city. We’re all familiar with scenes of flag-waving fans filling the streets and celebrating after their teams win. Parts of Little Italy, Little Portugal, Corso Italia, and Greektown on the Danforth are seas of celebrating fans after wins by their teams. What’s especially interesting and makes the World Cup in our city so much fun is the mixing of fan bases, and how the Brazilian fans will watch and celebrate in Little Portugal, and parts of Corso Italia along St. Clair West have also become home-base for many fans with links to South American teams other than Brazil. North York has a strong centre of fans of African teams, and is also where Iranian fans gather. It’s all a part of what makes Toronto great. Here at Metroland Media Toronto, we know how important the World Cup is to our city. That’s why we’ve got special coverage in today’s paper to introduce soccer fans to our website dedicated to the World Cup in Toronto. You can access the website by going to www. insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO There’s information there about all 32 teams, the culture and demographics related to those team’s countries in the Greater Toronto Area, and information on the best places to watch games locally.

Nothing like a sunny day at the ball park

D

ear Sun, I just wanted to drop you a quick line to let you know happy everyone is to see you’re back, and also to show you something I think you’ll find very interesting. Cast your gaze across the lake next to the CN Tower and over to the retractable roof that is open at the Rogers Centre. When I say open, I mean wiiiiide open and it’s all because of you. Now look straight down. You see the boys in blue and white warming up on the carpet beneath? Well, hold on to your Jays cap hotshot, the lads – wait for it – are in first place in their division. I’m not kidding. And get this, they didn’t have to switch divisions to get to the top either. They’re still in the vaunted American League East. That means the Jays are leading the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, et al, and get this, they swept the Red Sox last week.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Three out of three games. In Fenway Park, no less. The thing is, the way they’ve been playing, it wasn’t even that surprising. They gave Texas all they could handle before heading to Boston and then swept league-leading Oakland right after coming home from Fenway. They’ve been a handful for just everybody lately. What’s more, there’s eye-catching stuff happening with regularity up and down the Jays lineup. It could be a pivotal home run blast, a dazzling play in the field, a critical stolen base, an inning-ending strikeout, a game-saving catch at the wall, a runner thrown out at the plate – you name it. Sluggers Jose Bautista, Melky Cabrera and Edwin Encarnacion aren’t just smacking the ball around,

they’re crushing it. Speedy Jose Reyes is scampering around the basepaths like a one-man track meet. Veteran pitcher Mark Buerhle is mowing just about everybody down; ace reliever Casey Janssen is closing games with the best of them; and with depth on the bench, manager John Gibbons finally has the proper tools to do his thing, too. On top of all that, every time the club wins these days it seems there’s a story in the newspaper the next day about how the kind of streak they’re on hasn’t happened in like a gazillion years. It’s wild, I tell ya. Now, admittedly, it’s only May and things can change in a heartbeat in this game. Still, there’s definitely something going on here we haven’t seen since – ahem – those World Series days of yore. So, that’s it. I just wanted to get you up to speed on what’s been happening

since you’ve been away and to officially welcome you back. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m about to step inside the dome for today’s tilt. We’ll talk soon. When we do, just don’t ask me to try and explain how R.A. Dickey’s knuckle ball works. Anyhow, look for me in the nosebleed section right after the seventh inning stretch. I have a treat in store. It’s going to appear like I’m raising my arms to start a gigantic wave through the ballpark, which I hope indeed ensues, but in reality I’ll be raising them to salute you and thank you. The games here just aren’t the same without you. Warmly, Jamie Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Tuesday. the mirror looks at local healthcare and the provincial election

our exclusive look

Healthcare a key issue in Scarborough races Failed hospital merger, care for seniors among major concerns raised

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The strain and disappointment seen within the healthcare system in Scarborough has struck Mushtaq Sayed’s family. A realtor, he lives with three seniors – his parents and his mother-in-law. Sayed’s father has been home for five pain-filled months after a knee operation. He needs another but was told he couldn’t recover in hospital after having both knees done at once. Sayed’s mother-in-law lives in his dining room, converted to her use along with a downstairs bathroom, at Sayed’s cost, he said, because he learned a provincial home renovation tax credit for seniors could take six months to get. “Every time we talk about health benefits for seniors it is not actually there,” he said Monday near The Scarborough Hospital’s General campus. Sayed is an enthusiastic supporter of local healthcare: he helped run a community campaign that raised $100,000 for an MRI at TSH Birchmount. Each transaction at his real estate brokerage sends money to the birthing centre at Rouge Valley Health System’s Centenary campus. Still, he recently waited four hours in Centenary’s emergency room – running now at more than triple its intended capacity – to be seen for severe back pain after a fall. Sayed left, went to Markham-Stouffville Hospital and was treated after less than an hour. Will such discomfort, or the increasingly-repeated argument that Scarborough residents are being shortchanged on health care, be enough to defeat even one of the six Liberal MPPs running for re-election here? Operating rooms at the General campus remain the oldest in the province, while the entire Birchmount is now ranked in the bottom 10 per cent of hospital facilities

Ontario Health Coalition volunteers set up a giant rocking chair outside The Scarborough Hospital-General campus on Monday to draw attention to the state of daily level of care for long-term care patients.

in terms of physical condition. Leaders of the two Scarborough hospitals – who told Ontario’s health ministry their three sites all “reached capacity some time ago” – underwent a year of carefully-staged steps toward a merger, only to see it fail in March because the Liberal government refused to give money both hospitals had demanded to cover merger costs and start studying possible new hospital facilities for Scarborough. The government continued last year to make local health care investments – two new geriatric assessment teams to track and guide high-risk seniors, for instance, along with a nurse practitioner-led clinic on Midland Avenue – but the hospitals remain a sore point. Not long before the merger, executives of Scarborough’s Chinese Outreach Committee, which has raised health care funds here for two decades, threatened local Liberals with political consequences if their party failed to launch a study that would renew Scarborough’s hospitals. This week, the group’s founder, May Ye Lee, added

she’s heard excuses from MPPs she said form part of a “misleading and inappropriate finger-pointing exercise which leaves no one in power ultimately responsible” for decay in hospital facilities or their lack of operating funds. But Lee also noted a lack of specifics and commitments from Scarborough candidates of all stripes when it comes to getting Scarborough’s hospitals the capital funding they need. “I fear that if the Liberals still win (in Scarborough) then their sense of impunity will be limitless,” she wrote. Soo Wong, Liberal incumbent for ScarboroughAgincourt and a former nurse, defended her efforts on behalf of the hospitals last week, saying local MPPs secured an “unprecedented” $3.8 million to study a merger, and promising a “conversation” on the hospitals’ future will continue. “I have championed this issue and I continue to champion this issue,” she said. There are other healthcare related complaints in Scarborough. Last fall, the province revamped physiotherapy

coverage for seniors, which meant residents of Villa Ellegance, an Agincourt condominium where the average age is 86, could no longer use up to 100 free personal sessions a year to manage pain from chronic conditions. Instead, the seniors can be cleared by a physiotherapist for falls prevention classes twice a week. “They are so unhappy, and their families as well,” said May Wong, the building’s manager, adding the change has led to deteriorating physical and mental health in residents which ultimately will cost the system more. Representatives say staff at local long-term care homes are overworked. A personal support worker there “can have half an hour to get eight patients up, dressed, fed and bathed. It’s just not possible,” Kelly Walker, a Canadian Union of Public Employees member said at an Ontario Health Coalition event Monday. The union and coalition want the province to require nursing homes to hire enough staff to give each patient four hours of care a day. Though the Liberal government hired 600 full-time staff

since 2011 to enhance care “for Ontarians with behaviours like aggression, wandering, physical resistance and agitation,” physical attacks in nursing homes are a concern. In March 2013, one resident of the Wexford Residence was beaten to death and another left injured, while a patient with a record of violent behaviour was charged with second-degree murder. Scarborough’s two Yee Hong Centres for Geriatric Care, however, are so popular it may take seniors applying on a non-urgent basis from home nine years to get in, since the waiting list has grown to 4,500. In 2011, Yee Hong, which has four nursing homes in total, urged the province to build more long-term care facilities. It’s now starting a different campaign suggesting it could bring “some elements of longterm care” to people in their own homes. Alex Wilson, New Democratic Party candidate in Scarborough-Agincourt, said TSH’s board was right to cancel the merger, which would have led to service cuts. “Scarborough’s getting next to nothing. That’s why the amalgamation process failed.” But though Wilson said Scarborough’s hospitals are underfunded and understaffed, and that “it’s time for a new hospital” to be built, he conceded the NDP platform doesn’t assure residents this will be done. Wilson, a minister who once worked as a healthcare aide, said he found people providing home care for agencies “really have to work for a few” to make a living. He proposed dismantling either the area’s CCAC or its Local Health Integration Network and shifting the money saved to the PSWs doing home care. The NDP is offering voters a caregiver tax credit and pledges to cut emergency room wait times in half, by using two nurse practitioners in every ER. It’s not clear how NPs could do this at overcrowded Scarborough ERs, which gain

financial bonuses if they meet provincial targets – averages of eight hours for patients with complex conditions, or four hours for patients with minor ones. Wait times at all three Scarborough ERs have fallen since 2011, with the TSH Birchmount campus as of March at 10.2 hours for complex, 3.5 for minor; TSH General was at 8.6 for complex, four for minor; and RVHS Centenary at 10.9 for complex and four for minor. Wong said the government has invested millions to bring waits down and almost all patients coming to ERs in Scarborough “are seen within the target time.” New Democrats, she said, failed to support a budget that would have raised salaries for PSWs doing home care – jobs with a high turnover rate – by $4 an hour, though the Liberals still plan for that increase. “If you respect them, you’d better pay them properly,” said Wong, adding Liberals “have strengthened legislated standards” for nursing homes since 2003 and are providing $135 million more to the area CCAC for home care. “I dare say we have increased that significantly.” Raymond Cho, Progressive Conservative candidate in Scarborough-Rouge River, also suggested cutting out bureaucracy – possibly the LHINs – and trimming executive salaries in the system. A former social worker, Cho said he trusts PC Leader Tim Hudak not to cut front-line health workers, but added he’s not in favour of spending more on health care. “Sometimes we have to swallow very hard pills,” and use the resources we have more efficiently, he said. Asked for his position on Scarborough’s aging hospitals and what should be done with them, Cho said he would represent local views to a PC government. “The party has to listen to a guy like me.”

Tell us about your background and qualifications?

How would you help residents in the area around the University of Toronto Scarborough and Centennial College Morningside deal with concerns about lack of housing for the growing number of students?

■ The Scarborough Hospital campus has been ignored by the McGuinty/Wynne Liberal government for too long. The Liberals gave $26.2 million to the Niagara hospital during the recent byelection yet they refused to provide the necessary support for our hospital, promising only $3 million. Our hospital campus is one of the oldest in Ontario. It is time that Scarborough was treated as a full first class citizen when it comes to health care. Unlike previous MPPs for Pickering-Scarborough East, I will make increased funding a priority.

■ Over 11 years Premiers McGuinty and Wynne have not built a single new subway stop, completely ignoring the needs of Scarborough. A PC government will build subways and prioritize an east-west expressway, connecting people who live in Scarborough and Etobicoke. We will put the province in charge of all rail-based transit and major highways in the GTA. Commuters will, for the first time, have a system where all the pieces fit together. We will do this without raising taxes, by making transit the top priority in the provincial capital budget.

■ As the Federal/Ontario Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, I was nationally recognized for standing up against waste and corruption in government. Like you, I am tired of government mismanaging taxpayer’s money. An MBA graduate from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, I currently work as a marketing executive. I believe my public and private sector experience have provided me a unique perspective on the challenges for getting Ontario working again. As a parent to three young children, I want to get Ontario back on financial solid ground.

■ Centennial College’s new residence will improve this. The most important issue I hear from students, is the lack of good jobs in Ontario. Many graduates cannot find work, find work unrelated to their area of study or get paid less then they need and deserve. This is why we in the PC Party have a plan to create one million jobs, to get Ontario working again, so that students have opportunities. We will make it easier for youth to get jobs in the trades and easier to hire university graduates. All the details of our million jobs plan may be found at www. millionjobsplan.com

■ We must stem rising inequality in Ontario by creating good jobs and providing adequate income supports. There are 100,000 more people looking for work today than before the financial crisis. The Ontario NDP will create jobs by providing an incentive for companies; a Job Creator Tax Credit. Our plan is simple: create a job, get a tax credit. We will also gradually increase the minimum wage to $12 per hour and ensure social assistance rates keep pace with inflation.

■ The current situation of crowding on the highways, subways and buses is wasting both our time and money. This must be brought to an end. The Ontario NDP will improve transit service and buses in the GTA so families can get home faster. The Liberals refuse to even fund these projects. I will work hard in this riding and within my party to facilitate any and all reasonable methods of creating workable transit systems.

■ I worked for 40 years as a Registered Nurse before becoming a clinical instructor at Humber College and then retiring in 2010. I have long been involved in this community. I was a Pickering Town Councilor and represented Pickering on the Durham-Haliburton Kawartha Pine ridge District Health Council and I founded the Annual Frenchmans Bay Festival. As a mother and grandmother I am very concerned about high employment and the rising costs for families.

■ This is a crucial concern for students. The Ontario NDP is committed to making life more affordable for students and their families. We will freeze tuition rates and forgive interest on the Ontario portion of the student loans. These measures will help new students and recent graduates tremendously.

■ In a word: jobs. As your MPP, I have been a champion for investment in job creation for Pickering-Scarborough East. We know that the single greatest driver of job growth in this area will come from the creation of Seaton, a new livable and sustainable community that will provide homes for up to 70,000 people and include plans for employment lands that will create up to 35,000 jobs. These are the types of investment that Ontario Liberals are proud of. Since the height of the recession, we’ve worked hard to recover all of the jobs lost.

■ We have dedicated up to $15 billion for investment in transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. When it comes to funding for transit and infrastructure, Ontario Liberals have been very clear about where the money will and will not be coming from. Our plan does not include an increase in HST, the gas tax, or income tax on low-and-middle income earners. Since I was elected 3 years ago, I have delivered 30 minute all-day GO Train service, expanded parking at Pickering GO and new ScarboroughDurham Pulse Bus Rapid Transit.

■ Throughout my career I have prided myself on my ability to bring people together to achieve results. I am the past Chair of the Ontario Accessibility Standards Advisory Council, which has a mandate to advise the Minister of Community and Social Services on the implementation of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. And I served on the Durham Board of Education’s Special Education Advisory Committee for over five years. As a two-time cancer survivor, disability advocacy is very important to me.

■ With the growth of the University of Toronto Scarborough and Centennial College Morningside, there have been growing concerns about student housing. Since 2003, there has been a 68 per cent increase in the number of students at UTSC to over 10,000. There are rooms for just under 800 students on campus, with a new on-campus residence in the works that will add 500 spots. I am committed to working with the city and neighbours to deal with this in a way that respects the neighbourhoods, and protects students.

■ As your Green Party representative, I plan to be the champion of local business. Hard workers in this province deserve a break through energy conservation and reduced payroll taxes. These great strategies will allow local businesses to be more competitive, reduce carbon footprint and save money while continuing to be the home of our future industry leaders.

■ As the status quo parties play political games and continue to think that subsidizing will help us, the Green Party has the best plan to address this issue. Fair and responsible revenue tools reform and innovative incentives to get cars off the road will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce gridlock and provide over $3 billion to reinvest into our transit and transport infrastructure.

■ I am an IBM employee, small business specialist at Staples, leader of a technology non-profit organization and soon to be a small business owner of a technology training and solutions company. I grew up in a family who have all been great advocates for volunteer work and for making change in their community. It’s no wonder I’m with the Green Party because Ontario deserves 21st century leaders who are advocates for innovation, honesty, integrity and good public policy by putting the Ontarians first.

■ As your Green Party MPP, my first and major priority for addressing the lack of housing for the increasing demand for students would be to invest over $3 billion into transit and transport infrastructure. With efficient transit and transportation methods students can confidently live where the housing supply is and still get to and from school on time every time.

Cliffside among local films to be screened >>>from page 1 actor Mark Taylor portrays a man meditating on life’s littlest distractions. On Saturday, June 7, the University of Toronto Scarborough campus is screening the short film Cold Feet at 7 p.m., directed by Scarborough native Daniel D’Alimonte. It’s about a young deli butcher interested in getting involved with the mob who has been asked to cut up a dead body.

Niche films D’Alimonte described the film as a tribute to the mobster and gangster film genre. He wanted the film to depart from the cliches of the genre and focus on character and humour as a way to make it more accessible. “Now all you’re getting are the blockbusters on the one hand and all these really niche films on the other hand and not so much in between,” said D’Alimonte.

There is a lot of talent to be found this year and the Scarborough Film Festival has been a good platform for that. – George Tsioutsioulas

“I am interested in making films that are more accessible to anybody... like my father with $14 in his pocket. I want him to be able to see it.” On this same night, the film festival is opening up a free outdoor screening at Cedar Ridge Creative Centre at 7:30 p.m. This event is a new initiative by the film festival called A Night at the Movies. The Story of Furious Pete is a documentary about Peter Czerwinski who nearly died at the age of 16 because of his anorexia. The film narrates how Czerwinski overcomes his eating disorder and becomes one of the greatest

Annual march raises funds for PCD research >>>from page 1 internal organs on the opposite side. Maya, who was one of the youngest people ever diagnosed with PCD, continues to receive twice daily chest physiotherapy and daily medication to keep her airways clear. She also undergoes a pulmonary function test (to measure how well the lungs take in and release air) every three months when she visits the PCD clinic at Sick Kids hospital. About 50 children visit the clinic, the only pediatric PCD clinic in Canada. “Maya’s been used as a measuring stick to a certain degree of what earlier diag-

nosis can do,” said Shaun, noting early diagnosis is “half the battle, it’s most of the battle.” On Sunday, the Murphy family will hold Maya’s March to raise money for PCD research at Sick Kids and raise awareness of the disorder. features The sixth annual event features a five-kilometre walk through the streets and parks of Highland Creek. It begins at 21 Conlins Rd. at 10 a.m. and ends about 90 minutes later back at 21 Conlins where there will be a barbecue and a silent auction. The Phil and

John Show (acoustic band) will perform from noon to 3 p.m.

Paula, left, Maya, Shaun and Caleb Murphy get ready for this year’s Maya’s March in support of research into the rare genetic disorder primary ciliary dyskinesia at the Hospital for Sick Children.

$60,000 The Murphy family has raised nearly $60,000 in the last five years and hopes to raise another $15,000 this year. “I’m excited. Most of my friends are coming,” Maya said of Sunday’s event. “I think it’s important to raise money because it helps kids deal with PCD.”

Thunder sweep home openers, in Oshawa Saturday Scarborough-based Toronto Thunder opened their Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) season at home on Saturday, May 24 with a clean sweep over the York Simcoe Bucs. Scores were 23-12 varsity, 20-8 junior and 19-6 bantam. The three Thunder teams are in Oshawa this

Toffoli hoping to make his point, Ward top Canuck scorer The Los Angeles Kings were hoping to close out their third-round series against the host Chicago Blackhawks last night (the game went beyond our press deadlines) and Scarborough’s Tyler Toffoli was again looking to get his point across. The Kings lead the best-of-seven series 3-1 and Toffoli, a former student at Birchmount Park Collegiate who first took up the sport in the Scarborough Hockey Association, has a point in each game of the series (three goals and one assist), including an assist in L.A.’s 5-2 win on Monday. That brought his post-season total, thus far, to 11 points (6 goals, 5 assists) in 18 games with a plusfive. First national team call-up for Ward Scarborough’s Joel Ward did not end his hockey season the way he would want it, with the Canadian team falling 3-2 to Finland at the world championships in Belarus in the quarterfinals May 22. But nevertheless it’s been a career year. At the world championships where he was playing for the Canadian team for the first time, he led the team in scoring with six goals and three assists in eight games. With the Washington Capitals, the 33-year-old, sixyear NHL veteran had, by far, his best year point-wise with 49 points (24 goals, 25 assists) in 82 games. He’s a former student at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate.

Ride for Heart Sunday The Becel Heart&Stroke Ride for Heart will take over the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway this Sunday, June 1. The two thoroughfares are slated to be closed from 2 a.m. to 2 p.m., including the entire Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway from Carlaw Avenue to the Humber River. 14,000 cyclists signed up! This will allow an expected 14,000 cyclists to take over for a day – or at least a morning – while trying to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Typically, the event raises more than $5-million - annually! By mid-week, the charity event was approaching a sell-out as it has for the last three years. Three distances are offered, all starting (and finishing) at Exhibition Place, including 75, 50 and 25 kilometres. Start times are between 6 and 9 a.m. To participate or volunteer or for more information, visit http://www.heartandstroke.com

A little off the top, please

Join us at our open house! June 2nd & 3rd, at our Eglinton location! Learn about new technology, experience our award-winning service, and take advantage of

HUGE SAVINGS

on select models of hearing aids.

Questions to assess your hearing: Do the people around you seem to mumble and not speak clearly? Has anyone ever told you that they often have to repeat things for you? Do you find it hard to understand when someone talks to you from behind or from the side? Do you find it an effort if someone talks quietly or whispers? Do you have trouble hearing high pitched tones (music, bird song, children’s voices, etc.)? If you wear hearing aids, are you unsatisfied with how you’re hearing? Do you find it difficult to follow conversations in loud environments, for example, in restaurants?

Carly Pinkerton has fun with a braid of hair Thursday at Bliss Carmen Public School. Pinkerton raised $2,000 for St. Baldrick’s Foundation Conquer Childhood Cancers and donated her hair to make wigs for cancer patients. Below, Irene Liao takes off the rest of Carly’s hair and, bottom, Carly checks out the haircut.

Are you going out less because you find it hard to follow other people’s conversations? Has anyone ever asked you to turn down the volume of your television or radio? Do you have difficulties hearing someone at the other end of the telephone? Do you have trouble recognizing the direction from which a car, for example, is approaching? If you have answered yes to one or more of these questions, you could be suffering from hearing loss. Join us at our Open House, for complementary hearing tests, a consultation with our Audiologists, and an opportunity to demo new hearing aid technology!

h, John Tory is a coy one. All this time when the mayoral candidate was talking about building a “Yonge Street Relief Line,” we assumed that he was simply renaming the Downtown Relief Line – and that his promise to start building the thing right away, at the same time as the city and province built a subway to Scarborough, was pie-inthe-sky. Well, it turns out the reason Tory didn’t call his secret transit plan the downtown relief line was he doesn’t intend to build the downtown relief subway line any time soon. His Yonge Street Relief line is something else: a 52-kilometre, 22-stop SmartTrack line, using GO Transit rail lines for an above-ground subway that will stretch from the western reaches of Etobicoke to the middle of Scarborough, and dip south to Union Station touching Main Station in the east and

david nickle the city

Dundas West station in the west. It will cost $8 billion divided between three levels of government, and the city will pay for its portion using Tax Increment Financing, the same system of borrowing against future property assessment increases that Gordon Chong advocated when Mayor Rob Ford hired him to come up with a funding plan for his failed subway proposal on Sheppard Avenue. And it is a compelling idea. It provides rapid commuter transit to places that are pretty far off, and gives commuters from the edge of the subway system an alternative to clogging up the Bloor-Yonge interchange as they head to work downtown. For a short time after its revelation, it forces Tory’s opponents to basically call

him on his semantics. Earlier in the campaign, Tory did make it clear that a downtown relief subway line was essential, and criticized Chow and Ford for not embracing it as a number-one priority. To begin with, the TIF model of financing is another semantic trick: it is debt by another name, and with the billion-dollar Scarborough subway plan, Toronto will have nearly reached its debt ceiling. And like Chow’s downtown relief plan, Tory’s surface rail plan relies on a massive federal and provincial buy-in to go ahead, and in that sense, is just as speculative. The plan also doesn’t obviate the need for the TTC’s downtown relief line – the city has to find the money for that too. And as Tory himself pointed out not too long ago, that needs to come sooner rather than later.

THE WORLD CUP

Soccer passion ignites across Toronto

The place to be for World Cup coverage

Toronto’s neighbourhoods come alive for the games; connect online

T

oronto soccer fans are getting ready to wave their flags next month when the World Cup of soccer begins in Brazil. Being one the of most diverse cities in the world means that when the World Cup takes place every four years, there is no shortage of fans cheering for the 32 teams taking part in the tournament. And this year will be no exception. The World Cup kicks off on June 12 with a game between host Brazil and Croatia in Sao Paulo. Scarborough’s Josie Tanga is of Italian descent and she is already looking forward to this year’s World Cup, in which Italy will be making its 14th straight appearance. “It’s great,” said Tanga of the World Cup and its importance to Toronto’s huge Italian-Canadian population.

we won it in 2004,” said Kouzoukas, who grew up in East York playing soccer. “That was the pinnacle for Greek fans,” he said of the 2004 Euro championship which Greece won 1-0 over host team Portugal. That win led to thousands of fans pouring onto Danforth Avenue, waving Greek flags and celebrating for hours. It also established Greektown on the Danforth, between Chester and Jones avenues, as the epicentre for Toronto’s Greek soccer fans during major tournaments such as the Euro and the World Cup. REALISTIC OUTLOOK

FIERCE SUPPORT “We have a huge fan base, and we love our Italian team. We support them no matter what.” Tanga said family and friends often gather at her home to watch the games when Italy is playing. “We have family and friends over and we get all dressed up for the game; wearing the bracelets and the hats,” she said. “Everyone gets very excited.” Of course, food is a big part of the celebration when it comes to watching the World Cup for Toronto’s fans supporting the countries taking part. “We make rice balls and pizza,” said Tanga. After enjoying the game in the relative calm of the home environment, Tanga said heading out to celebrate on Corso Italia, in the St. Clair and Lansdowne area, is also usually on the agenda providing Italy wins the match.

>> insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO It was Toronto’s Italian fans who started the tradition of massive World Cup celebrations in the city with huge turnouts and street parties during the 1982 tournament when Italy won over what was then West Germany. As for picking a winner this year, Tanga likes Italy. No surprise given her heritage and the fact Italy has won the World Cup four times; second only to Brazil’s five World Cup championships. “The Italians,

who else,” she said when asked to predict this year’s champ. “My kids might have a different opinion, though. (Cristiano) Ronaldo is a great player; maybe Portugal. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Italy, though.” For Sam Kouzoukas, the participation of Greece in this year’s World Cup makes him proud of the team he supports. “Historically, we’ve done better in the Euro (the European soccer championships) and

Kouzoukas is proud that Greece is making its second-straight World Cup appearance, but is realistic about his team’s chances of winning it all. “It’s a great accomplishment that Greece made it,” he said. He pointed out that Greek fans did not have a lot to cheer about in the 2010 World Cup during which their team went winless in their three preliminary round games, and were eliminated. However, Greece did advance to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Euro. Given his background of playing soccer and his Greek heritage, Kouzoukas said he finds it interesting how everyone in Toronto becomes a soccer expert once the World Cup begins. “When the World Cup comes, everyone is watching and everyone has an opinion. About two weeks before the World Cup and during it, everyone’s talking about it.” Hosting a World Cup event? Post it in our online calendar. Go to www. insidetoronto.com and click ‘Sign Up’.

As long as you have sufficient equity within your property, in many cases, funds can be obtained in as little as three business days. HOW DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS? My husband has been a licensed journeyman for 40 years. Together with his experience and expertise, he naturally wanted to start his own business. With my previous background in sales, the transition was even easier. We believe our mix of knowledge creates the perfect combination to supply the greatest service for our clients.

Air Flex Heating & Cooling Limited is your nieghbourhood HVAC specialist serving the GTA with emphasis on East Toronto and the Durham region. Our services include installation, service and repair of all HVAC equipment. We aim to provide the highest quality service in our industry. An Air Flex Heating & Cooling representative is always ready to answer your calls or questions on any of our promotions or services. Our goal is for our customers to be completely satisfied and comfortable with every job we do, whether it’s the installation of an air conditioner or a furnace repair. Located in Scarborough on busy and vibrant Lawrence Avenue East, we’ve been in business for over 15 years and look forward to many more years of success.

HOW DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS? Our business was started by an experienced Hvac Technician with over 20 years of knowledge and expertise. WHAT IS YOUR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE? We care about our customers comfort and we take time to listen to our customers. WHAT ARE CUSTOMERS SURPRISED TO LEARN? We not only install but we service all makes and models. They are also surprised to know that we stock a wide assortment of furnace filters at our showroom. WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE SKILLS NEEDED TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEUR? •Experience in your area of business •Good communications skills •Fair business practices

The North York Mirror published a series of articles on my business. Now everyone knows how great we are!

WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE SERVICE? When it comes to bathroom renovations, it would be difficult to find another business with our years of knowledge and quality service in the area. Bathrooms are our forte; however, all our renovations are done with the same level of success. Having an onsite licensed plumber is also a key part of our service. We are able to provide clients with a one-stop-shop solution to renovations and repairs. When it comes to products, we buy only high quality local products but are able to source any product you desire. WHAT IS YOUR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE? We have a strong team of men to do the renovations but also a woman’s touch. When it comes to design and communicating with a client, we offer both the practical and aesthetic knowledge needed. We are also able to adapt to any type of client need, whether it be a style preference or accessibility priority. — Ann Scala Co-Owner

An education at Centennial is an education without borders, because the world has changed, and so have we. We’ve re-created our College, giving us a unique position in the marketplace and the world. And we are now prepared for the next set of challenges: to be more innovative and entrepreneurial; to further exploit the benefits of technology; to build more bridges with communities and employers; to see our graduates do meaningful work and have meaningful lives. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ENTREPRENEURS STARTING OUT? Planning is so important when deciding to start a business. There are so many factors to consider - do you have appropriate funding for the type of business you are planning to start? Do you have a deďŹ ned competitive advantage so your clients will know what differentiates you from the competition? It’s also important to know who your target market is and at the end of the day, don’t be afraid to fail but be prepared to move forward quickly if you do - learn from your mistakes. WHAT COURSES DO YOU OFFER TO HELP ENTREPRENEURS START A BUSINESS? At Centennial College we offer two programs for those looking to start a business. The Ontario Self Employment Benefit Program is sponsored by Employment Ontario. It’s two months in class training including marketing research, finance, management, operations and 34 weeks of mentoring as you start your business. We also have our New Business Start-up. This online certificate program is two semesters. Both programs include an advisor/mentor to help you develop and implement your business plan.

SHARE A SUCCESS STORY Cliffside Hearth Bread Company is an open concept European-style bakery specializing in baked goods made from scratch. The business was started by Camelia Proulx and her husband David in 2011. As a past client of Centennial College’s Centre of Entrepreneurship Camelia had a vision of how she would successfully operate this business thanks to the College’s Ontario Self-Employment Benefit (OSEB) program. “The program gave me the additional training to top up my existing skill set she explains. WHAT IS YOUR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE/WHAT MAKES YOUR COURSES UNIQUE? All students/clients are matched with a mentor/advisor who is an entrepreneur. Our mentors/advisors have a broad base of knowledge in numerous industry sectors providing essential support for business success. Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly convinced other mayors from large cities to ask the province and federal government to upload the costs of social services and public housing starting in 2018. Kelly, who has assumed all of Mayor Rob Ford’s duties and powers since Ford took a leave of absence to check into rehab, made the pitch at the recent Large Urban Mayors Caucus of Ontario meeting. The group, which is made up of mayors of cities with more than 100,000 residents, had previously set three priorities that it wanted to review with the leaders of the three provincial parties: gridlock and transportation,,

job creation, and the cost of emergency services. Kelly convinced them to add a fourth: public housing and social services upload. The cost of both of these services has been disproportionately an issue for Toronto, which through Toronto Community Housing is the largest landlord in the province, and administers a massive social service infrastructure. “The others are all very important but it ignored a priority item for the City of Toronto and I wanted to be there so I could add that to the list as an important priority— and that was to upload the cost of social services and social housing,” said Kelly. Kelly said that the cost of those services is a $300 million burden now and will grow to $450 million as the

federal government reduces funding. “You’re looking at an enormous amount of money that if not uploaded by the provincial government or funded by the federal government will fall on the property taxpayer,” said Kelly. “And that is something that is politically incomprehensible.” Kelly’s said his attendance at the LUMCO meeting was a deliberate attempt to bring Toronto to the table in discussion of urban issues both in the Greater Toronto Area and across the province. Mayor Ford did not attend the meetings. “Toronto hasn’t pulled its weight in the province and has an uneven success in the Greater Toronto Area,” said Kelly. “My goal was to try and reintegrate Toronto into the politics of the GTA and the province.”
