Scout food drive set for Saturday Scouts will come to the doors of homes in southeast Scarborough’s Centennial neighbourhood this Saturday for a Christmas food drive which is now in its 31st year. The 2nd Highland Creek Scouting Group is collecting for the Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities food bank, which supports around 1,700 adults and 1,100 children
in the community. As before, scouts from the 11th Bendale and 7th Pickering groups will join the one-day drive, as will cubs, venturers and younger children in scouting. “Even our beavers are eager to support the food drive and have their own baby food collection program,” a press release said.
The local area scouts, who last year collected 8,584 pounds of food, say all non-perishable donations are welcome. However, items such as powdered milk, canned food, cereal, pancake mix, tea and coffee are among the foods needed most.

Capt. Ben Lee grew up wanting to do his part for Canada, and knowing what Remembrance Day was. It’s an important time of the year, “a day for us to commemorate what generations of Canadians – not just soldiers, but Canadians – sacrificed,” he said this week. Around 2007, though, Lee, who joined the army in 2001, began to see Remembrance Day differently. People he knew or trained with were showing up on the television news, casualties of the war in Afghanistan. “I started to see some of my friends get hurt, or even worse,” said Lee, 29, who commanded a satellite company of the Queen’s Own Rifles in Scarborough. There would be more fallen comrades, and ramp ceremonies to mark their return home, for Lee to think of on Nov. 11 after he was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 as the psychological operations platoon commander for Task Force

Nurses’ rep warns of hospital service cuts Weekend protests planned in Scarborough in advance of hospitals’ boards meetings MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com A “car convoy” bringing hospital employees to the offices of Scarborough MPPs offices this Saturday is a last chance to show strength before the boards of The Scarborough Hospital and Rouge Valley Health System vote on a possible merger. Frustrated as they were with hospital cuts and the prospect of more to come, nurses meeting at Birkdale Community Centre this week were dismayed by colleagues too busy or disillusioned to join their fight for services. “They run away from me, knowing I’m going to talk about union things,” one woman told a meeting called by the Ontario Health Coalition. Others said hospital employees and members of the public aren’t involved because they don’t think a merger will happen or can’t see how they’ll be affected by it. “The public wants to know, ‘What am I losing?’ And right now the information’s not out there,” said Elaine Gray, a TSH cardiology nurse.
Staff photo/MIKE ADLER
The Ontario Nurses Association’s Andy Summers addresses hospital employees at the Birkdale Community Centre during a meeting to discuss hospital service cuts in Scarborough.
Andy Summers, regional vice president of the Ontario Nurses’ Association, said nurses need to talk with colleagues “with a flyer in your hand.” “A lot of our colleagues have their head in the sand,”
Summers added, arguing there’s no way services at both hospitals won’t be cut after a merger, even though the community is told a merged hospital will “enhance” services. If Scarborough’s three
birthing centres - there’s one on each hospital campus - are merged, “for sure, I’m going to lose my job,” said Joanne Frazer, a nurse with 25 years experience but little seniority in the RVHS Centenary birthing centre, where she works. “There’s not enough jobs for everybody,” said Frazer, who was disappointed only 50 people turned up for Monday night’s meeting. “There should be 2,000 people in this room.” There were stories of how hospital spending cuts - $17 million in the past year, $28 million projected for next year - are causing patients to suffer. An orthopedics nurse at TSH said patients there used to get a full week to recover after a full hip replacement. Last year, she said, the hospital said five days was enough, and now nurses are under pressure to “push these patients to go home” sooner. “I see more people come back (to hospital) with infection.” Susan Brickell, the local ONA president at TSH, said the hospitals can’t afford to
keep cutting resources on the front lines of health care. “This isn’t us protecting our own jobs. This is us protecting what we know is right,” she said. Instead of thinking “there’s nothing we can do,” nurses and members of three other hospital unions should join the convoy, starting Saturday morning from a parking lot on McCowan Road, to bring their protest to constituency offices of five Scarborough MPPs who “need to know this is an election issue,” Summer said. In a discussion with RVHS physicians on Oct. 25, CEO Rik Ganderton said hospitals “have to change the way we deliver services to be more cost effective” because the province has “flat-lined” its hospital funding for two years, and will continue to do so through 2017, even as costs rise. There will be “ongoing changes” for staff, Ganderton said in a transcript of the meeting, but “those disrupting characteristics” will continue “whether we merge or not.” Ganderton, who recently
announced he is stepping down from his post early in 2014, acknowledged a “political climate” in which Ontario’s Liberal minority government could be forced into an election in eight months, may affect the merger. “That is the biggest risk of all, because they (the Liberal MPPs) will worry about being reelected, and they will worry whether there will be political noise about changing the system.” The committee conducting the $1.1 million merger study tried to understand the benefits, but also the risks of the hospitals joining, Ganderton told the physicians. “We do recognize that there are significant risks to individuals, communities and patients in this process.” On Nov. 12, the TSH board meets from 4 to 7 p.m. at the General campus, while the RVHS board meets at the Centenary from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Their decisions on the study will go to the board of the Central East Local Health Integration Network on Nov. 27.

Local fishing group aims to interest youngsters in sport NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com The Scarborough Fly and Bait Casting Association is hoping to appeal to a new generation of anglers. a six-month course to youth under-18 who “might wish to become good fly and bait casters and fishermen,” according to one of the club’s founders and current president, Scarborough Walk of Fame member Gordon Deval, And late fall and winter is a perfect time to learn, assures the 80-something Deval, who explained the club heads indoors for their own version of dryland training, casting
their lines on the wooden floors of a rec centre gym. Before formally kicking off their youth program, however, he said they need to firm up their indoor gym space throughout the colder winter months. In the warmer months they actually practice their casting outdoors at the Scarborough Civic Centre outdoor pool. The club also remains busy with its other programs,
usually hosted by Deval, that include fly-tying, bamboo rod building and even a monthly movie night with a fishing theme, of course. “We also have, of course, fishing trips, one of which we’re just putting together now that will be up to Georgian Bay ... probably the first or second week of November,” said Deval, who is a much decorated angler in North America and also
an author with 19 books to his credit and another one coming along. He has also been in at least one book by his old fishing buddy, the late Paul Quarrington, ‘Fishing With My Old Guy’. The club currently has a couple of dozen paid-up members, “about half of those are active, others come when they can come, which is the same way with most associa-
tions,” said Deval. The Scarborough-based club welcomes a wide-range of experience – from grizzled veterans who don’t mind passing on a tip or two to newbies learning how to take their first tentative casts. For more info on joining or about the youth initiative visit www.gordondeval.com

very year we don the crimson poppy to honour our veterans for their service and sacrifice. We donate to the Royal Canadian Legion so that they may continue to support them. We reflect upon their contribution to our country with ceremonies on Nov. 11 and a moment of silence. Unfortunately for many, that’s the extent of their personal commitment to the occasion. What else can one do? The answer is much more – especially today with the aid of social media and online tools. In fact, it’s become so easy to learn, spread awareness of our history and share the stories of our veterans that the question becomes, why wouldn’t you do more? For starters, visit bit.ly/174PWqT where we list local Remembrance Day our view services, veteran stories and where we’ll have photo gallerWe can do so ies of those ceremonies as they much to share happen. Ignoring city budget will prove costly
G
iven the incredible distractions at Toronto City Hall, it is no surprise that three major pieces of the city’s budget presented last week were virtually ignored. Yet we ought to pay attention, since each one impacts us directly. The water treatment budget requested a nine per cent rate increase. Solid waste is asking taxpayers for a three per cent increase. The Parking Authority proposes to remit less to the city even though it forecasts greater revenue. In normal times any of these three demands would be the subject of spirited debate that might conclude with a compromise acceptable for the paying public and workable for city goals. Unfortunately, these are not normal times. Distractions caused by the mayor’s associates, his own behaviour, the threat of managing alone and res-
david soknacki beyond the headlines olutions to strip the mayor of some of his powers have all turned our attention away from critical issues. Worse, even if the mayor wanted to act on reducing the cost of government, for which these three budgets allow him excellent opportunity, his position is now so weakened he cannot do so. Those who think that the mayor’s power is enshrined in legislation see only a small part of his power. By far the largest portion is his influence on appointments, his recommendations on the pace of legislation with bureaucrats and the ability of his staff to negotiate with individual councillors. Consider two examples from his predecessors. Despite being the butt of jokes, mayor Mel Lastman and his staff knew how to work the informal city hall
system. The proof was in his success in convincing council to approve the use of an abandoned mine as a landfill. His victory is more notable since it occurred during the run-up to an municipal election and in the face of strong opposition. one vote On the other hand, in his second term mayor David Miller relied too much on his legislative powers, and came within one vote of losing approval for new taxes. As the events of the last few weeks have made clear, our mayor is even less inclined to work with individual councillors. If his opponents are emboldened to threaten his own office, then the mayor does not have the ability to challenge the budgets as they come forward. This is troubling for the city, since we have a fore-
taste of oncoming difficulties. Obviously the water, solid waste and parking budgets already presented need a firm hand. In addition, the police chief is asking for a 3.2 per cent increase for the city’s largest expense, which will add more than $30 million in financial pressure. Plus a mutiny was barely avoided in committee last month, when councillors wanted to eliminate fees for recreation. If the mayor wants to act on his signature issue of minding expenditures, he will need to reach out. Only by presenting a skilful mix of direction, conciliation and a firm hand, will he be able to achieve his budget target. Given the current distractions and mayor’s political weakness, achieving the target is unlikely.

Customers are turning backs on services offered by TTC To the editor: Re: ‘Councillor warns of Kennedy station parking lot closure,’ News, Oct. 24. I am now retired but while working, availed myself of the TTC commuter parking lots. Over the years, I developed a sense the TTC has developed a real knack for alienating its customers. Prior to the rebuilding of the Victoria Park station, the covered parking section was closed for a full year and a half. This reduced the available parking by a full third, yet
absolutely nothing was done there during that time. No explanations or apologies were ever given. The north parking lot at Warden station used to be free to holders of a TTC Metropass. The lot was full every day. The day after the “freebie” ended, the lot was half empty and never recovered. All of those customers turned their back on the “better way”. Councillor Michelle Berardinetti is to be praised for her exposure of the latest attempt by the TTC to shoot itself in the foot. Ken Grant
Flood Ford with emails to step down To the editor: Now that we know the truth about Mayor Rob Ford what are the citizens of Toronto going to do about it? Ford suffers from an inflated ego and he can do no wrong, and wrong is what he is. I think Torontonians have been more than patient and we do not deserve any delay in getting rid of the mayor. It would be a good idea for mas-
sive protests and emails to assail Ford’s office and let him know we want him out. I want a mayor who is trustworthy, principled, honest and respects the city he lives in. I want a mayor who has sound judgement and the wherewithal to make Toronto a truly world-class city. What I don’t want is Ford. Kathleen Matthews
Mayor’s alleged addictions don’t cost taxpayers money, reader says To the editor: An open letter to Mayor Rob Ford: Mayor Rob Ford, those hyenas in the press and politicos of the left are gloating you have hit bottom. That may be so, but I hope you will continue to fight for us the downtrodden taxpayers, and that you will continue to serve us the best way you can. I am not expressing my blind loyalty; I am expressing my continuing support of your policies
Personal foibles As far as I know, your personal foibles has not cost me a cent of my tax dollars, unlike those corrupt, gravy-train-addicted, privileged politicos at other levels of government, whose outrageous scandals will continue to hit my wallet for many years to come. I’d still entrust you with my vote,
rather than put your gravy-trainaddicted opponents in power again. The gravy-train mindset at city hall has got to end. To give you a historical perspective, during the American Civil War, president Abraham Lincoln’s most effective field general was General Ulysses Grant, who was known to love the bottle. Upon knowing this, Lincoln made sure the general was well supplied with his liquid nourishment. R. Javier
Cyclists have to play safe on the road, too To the editor: I have a comment regarding Toronto’s new Stay Safe, Stay Alert campaign. I would like to congratulate the city on finally doing something about the daily after-dark traffic nightmare we in the city must endure. It is time that some common sense rules were laid out for the general public to follow.

and appreciation of what you have accomplished so far.
However, I feel that the warning to the cyclist’s section has been deliberately watered down. I don’t think that cyclist’s should merely ‘consider’ wearing bright or reflective clothing. They should be made to. I wish there had been some guidance regarding the quality of the lighting bikes. Most bikes that I can barely see on the roads are equipped with substandard front and rear lights that
have all of the illuminating power of a guttering votive candle. Running through stop signs and signalcontrolled crosswalks containing pedestrians is a constant problem. Cycling is not a safe activity and unfortunately bad things happen to those who ride them everyday. Tell the cycling lobbyists they have to ‘play safe’, too? Chris Belfontaine

confident the plaza and road extension will be finished by the end of 2014. “It’s a very vibrant project and we’re certainly seeing a lot of market response,” he said recently. Festival Square consists of 90 retail condo stores, a banquet hall and 381 underground parking spaces, which will be available as overflow
parking during off hours for the Milliken GO Station just to the north. At a meeting last year, Global Fortune described a building anchored by large grocery store, but the plaza has been “substantially redesigned to accommodate market preferences,” McMinn said. For three decades, the
city has said Redlea would be extended a second time to McNicoll Avenue, which would split the parking lot of the Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church. Toronto Council last July approved expropriation of land to make the extension possible.

ouge Valley Centenary hospital showcased its efficiency during a recent tour of the facility by delegates from an international conference. In 2008, the hospital began implementing the Lean philosophy, derived from Toyota Production System, to help identify and eliminate waste. Rouge Valley was among 40 Lean organizations across Ontario that was toured as part of the recent Lean conference in Toronto.
“We were one of the earlier hospitals in Ontario to adopt Lean as a continuous improvement framework, and we really focused on using Lean across our entire organization,” said Scott Ovenden, director of transformation at Rouge Valley. ER waits reduced “It allows us to see waste in the system, identify it and redesign processes so that waste is removed so that with the same resources we’re creating more value for our patients.” The hospital said it
has reduced emergency room wait times by 40 per cent while wait times at the birthing centre was reduced by more than 35 per cent. Redeployment Ovenden said the hospital has saved money by implementing Lean, though the exact figures haven’t been calculated. Some hospital employees were redeployed but none were let go. “What we don’t do is let people go as a result of Lean process improvements,” Ovenden said. “The reason why not is:
as soon as you let someone go because of a process improvement, you can be quite sure that in the future no one is going to participate in the next process improvement event.” Patient flow Rouge Valley also credits Lean with: n reducing the amount of paperwork patients fill out; n canceling fewer surgeries due to enhanced pre-surgical screening; n improving patient flow and discharge planning, allowing patients to go home sooner; n reducing ambulance off-
load times; n reducing psychiatrist wait times by months. Ovenden said Rouge Valley adopted Lean five years ago after an external review found both financial and cultural challenges at the facility. “There was this sense through the review that some of the staff were feeling powerless,” he said. “So we needed a methodology which improved the processes and changed the culture and those were the two pillars that Lean has been built on.”

The program “offers some off-hour flexibility” already, and volunteer services is hoping to extend it to evenings and weekends as CAVA gains in popularity, the hospital said.

Councillor airs concerns over Eglinton traffic
Berardinetti worried about Crosstown LRT’s impact on right turns at major intersections RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Removing right-turn lanes from Eglinton Avenue East will have a disastrous effect on local traffic when a planned light rail line begins
operating, warns a Scarborough councillor. Michelle Berardinetti is concerned Metrolinx, which is constructing the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line, is disregarding the concerns of motorists who will no longer have the ability
to turn right at major intersections along Eglinton, including Pharmacy and Victoria Park avenues, once the Crosstown launches in 2020. The Scarborough Southwest councillor, who recently voted in favour of a three-stop easter exten-
sion of the Bloor Danforth subway line to replace the Scarborough RT, made her concerns public in a message to constitutents posted on her personal website. “...clearly Metrolinx either does not understand or is choosing to Pine Hills Cemetery and Visitation Centre is a business name of Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries. Updated TTC route maps earn approval Numbered subway signs and updated route maps could soon be in place following a decision by the TTC board of directors to proceed on a new wayfinding system. The board voted unanimously at its recent meeting to support staff recommendations for updated TTC signage, which would see traditional line names such as Bloor-Danforth replaced with colour-coded numbers. The updated signage could be at two subway interchange stations as soon as the end of the year. TTC customer care chief Chris Upfold said the strategy wasn’t intended to replace the traditional practice of naming lines and stations after streets, but to make colours and numbers already associated with the existing lines the main indicator. “You can still call the line by name, it’s just supplemented by a colour, a symbol and a number,” said Upfold. As part of the new strategy the TTC will emphasize colours and number associated with current lines - Yonge-University-Spadina (YUS) for example is line Number 1 and associated with the colour yellow.

ignore the impact of this configuration for commuters, residents and businesses along Eglinton Avenue East,’ the councillor said. But Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said there seems to be some “confusion” regarding Berardinetti’s concerns, saying few traffic modifications have been made to accommodate the eastern end of the Crosstown between Laird Avenue and Kennedy Station. Prior to Metrolinx In an email to The Scarborough Mirror, Aikins said the decision to remove right turns stems from the findings of an Environmental Assessment for the project completed by the city and the TTC in 2010 – before Metrolinx assumed responsibility for completing the $4.9 billion plan. “The issue was discussed at the EA public meetings and eliminated right hand turn lanes at some major intersections in Scarborough,” wrote Aikins. “At this time, Metrolinx is not planning any updates to the EA for the surface portion of the project.” She said the only change since the completion of the EA in regards to Eglinton East was removing the right-turn lane on Pharmacy and replacing it with a left turn lane, following a traffic analysis of the intersection. Aikins said the city’s rationale for removing right turns is in line with its aim to make transit corridors more pedestrian-friendly. “The vision of a more pedestrian-focused corridor is in line with the city’s vision for any avenue with high-capacity transit, and there has been an extensive consultation with all relevant city departments to define the proposed designs,” she wrote. “These balance pedestrian and vehicular demands.”

Transit advisory panel suggest Big Move plan could still be modified RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A report from an advisory panel convened by the premier to examine transitfocused taxes and fees says Metrolinx’s Big Move plan
could be further modified. The Transit We need, the new report from the Transit Investment Strategy Advisory Panel, suggests elements of The Big Move – which aims to build over 100-kilometres of new transit connections
across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area over 25 years – may require “strategic modifications” due to the financial constraints of the provincial Liberals. “As a result of both changing conditions and emerging
priorities, the Panel does not view The Big Move as written in stone,” states the report, listing a number of factors such as a provincial stimulus plan in the wake of a worldwide economic recession that created a higher provincial
budget deficit, and the need to tie infrastructure construction to job creation. The 13-member panel was named by Premier Kathleen Wynne in September to look into the feasibility of implementing proposed transit
fees by Metrolinx as a part of an Investment Strategy to raise $2 billion yearly from so-called revenue tools until the Big Move is completed.

opinion
Ford has absented himself from role of Toronto’s mayor Toronto City Council is in disarray, and it will likely remain so for some time. That is the one thing that one can safely write, in a column that met a late Tuesday afternoon deadline: just a few hours after Mayor Rob Ford made his stunning admission – that he has indeed smoked crack cocaine – and a few minutes after his late-in-the-day news conference that he still means to be mayor. Things are moving quickly, and no doubt as this shows up in newspaper boxes and mail slots things will have no doubt developed. But this remains: the mayor has admitted to smoking crack cocaine, sometime last year, while in office. In doing so, regardless of whether he stays in his office, he has effectively absented himself from his role as mayor. Council won’t, and really shouldn’t, support him. Council is going to have to find a way to steer itself over
david nickle the city the next year. At the next council meeting, council will take some steps toward doing that. Willowdale Councillor John Filion has brought forward a motion to temporarily strip the mayor of all his powers. Denzil Minnan-Wong, the Don Valley East Councillor, is asking the mayor to simply leave and look after himself. There was also word Tuesday that the mayor’s brother Doug could be off the budget committee. That sets up an infrastructure that might allow council to control its own agenda. In a few weeks, council will have before it the 2014 operating budget to debate and pass. Who will give voice to the vision for this budget? Karen Stintz?
One of the other pretenders to the mayoralty next year? Now, almost certainly council will keep the city running, the tax rates reasonable and the services intact. Council will also be making up its mind on the Billy Bishop Airport extension some time before the next election. Once again, some sort of decision will emerge – but it, like the budget, will emerge from chaos. If Ford were gone, then Norm Kelly, the avuncular councillor from ScarboroughAgincourt, could ably step in and guide matters, in the manner of Ford’s mandate. But as deputy to the crippled wreck that the Ford administration will have become, it will be difficult for him to do any better. Ford has left an awful, filthy mess for others to clean up.

Need new windows? Do your homework! When it comes to replacing your windows, it’s important to choose a company that you trust to protect your home with expert installation and high quality products. Begin your search for a window company by visiting dealer showrooms and asking friends and neighbours for recommendations. Do some research to find out the history of the company and its reputation. Remember, a well established window company should be a member of such organizations as B.B.B. (Better Business Bureau), S.A.W.D.A.C. (Siding and Window Dealers Association of Canada) andWindow Wise. Energy Savings is one of the most important factors in selecting your windows. Because new windows are meant to last for years, the decision you make in the selection of your windows can help define energy efficiency and comfort levels in the home for years to come. High performance windows
are a must for your investment, offering significant improvements in solar control, thermal comfort and energy efficiency. Manufacturer’s do this by incorporating low-E coatings, inert gas fills and better edge spacer and frames. Price may not always be the determining factor. The cheapest window you find may not perform at the level you want. So make sure you fully understand the true value of your purchase, and don’t let price dictate your final decision. There are a wide variety of windows available on the market that can make the task of selecting the appropriate windows confusing. There are two basic types of windows: those that open and those that don’t, called operable and fixed. There are also windows that tilt in, this allows you to clean the outside of your window from inside your home. Bay and Bow windows are also very popular in today’s homes. You should be advised by the window representative as to what type of window
VISIT PLATINUM WINDOWS & DOORS @ www.PlatinumRenovations.com SHOWROOM @ 3001 Markham Rd.,416-609-0102
style is best for your home, both in practicality and aesthetics. Warranties are a large part of your window investment. Your new window warranty is only as good as the manufacturer behind it. Dealing with well known brands is a good idea. Make sure that you get your warranty in writing from the dealer you purchase from. Finally let’s not forget about the installation. When you are buying new windows you are also purchasing the workmanship that comes with it. Ask the representative about the installation and the types of materials that are used for the job, such as insulation and interior trims. This is crucial as to how well the window will perform. Ask about the clean up after the installation and what kind of labor warranty is given. Replacing your old windows is not that difficult after all.Whatever your reason may be it will definitely be a sound investment, as long as you do your homework.

Sound advice about your hearing
Answers to your questions about hearing loss and hearing aids What is the smallest hearing aid? Until recently, when people talked about “invisible” hearing aids, they were really talking about the CIC style of aid, which is an acronym for “completely-in-canal.” Although it was a very discreet option (relative to other styles), it wasn’t truly invisible. In the past few years, however, a few pioneers in the hearing aid industry have introduced a new style of hearing aid, the IIC. IIC is an acronym for “invisible-in-canal,” and it really is true to its name. The IIC style is now the smallest, most discreet style hearing aid that can be worn, and when properly fit, is 100 per cent invisible, meaning, it can’t even be seen if you are looking for it. Although IICs are incredibly discreet, there are a few drawbacks. Most significantly, they
are not a good option for everyone. At the present time, they are only a viable option for mild tomoderatehearinglosses-they just aren’t strong enough for severe or profound losses (though that may soon change). For people with more severe hearing loss who want a discreet solution, Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) hearing aids present a good option. RICs include a tiny device that fits hidden behind the ear sending sounds to the ear through a virtually undetectable tube that runs into the ear canal. A discussion about small hearing aids would not be complete without mentioning the Lyric. Available only from Lyric-Authorized hearing clinics, Lyric is the world’s only invisible hearing aid that can

be worn for months at a time without being removed from your ear or changing batteries. Please feel free to contact my office to learn more about invisible hearing aids or with any questions about your hearing health. United effort against youth violence needed: report CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com The lack of collective action is what makes youth violence such a resilient issue in the city, suggested a report that was
launched Monday. “It’s not a lack of trying. It’s not a lack of engagement,” said Lekan Olawoye, executive director of For Youth Initiative, who co-chaired the taskforce that worked on the
report titled, From Analysis to Action: A Collective Approach to Eliminate Youth Violence in Toronto. “We know the work is happening, but we know the work is not happening together.
Above all else, we cannot do this in isolation.” The Youth Anti-Violence Taskforce was convened by For Youth Initiative last November and consists of members including Deputy Police Chief

The Youth Anti-Violence Taskforce launched a report Monday on youth violence in the city. The report called on the different sectors of society to work collectively for a solution to the issue of youth violence.
Peter Sloly, Transamerica Life Canada president and CEO Doug Brooks, and special advisor and former Toronto mayor David Miller. Olawoye presented the findings in front of stakeholders representing different sectors of society, which the report called on to work in collaboration with each other. Key areas They include representatives from the government, community agencies, city and faith leaders, and the private sector. It identified four key areas that youth require to avoid violence and crime: reducing social isolation, educational attainment, employment opportunities, and family wellbeing. “All four need to be seen in the life of a young person,” Olawoye said. “We see youth violence does not happen senselessly and without reason.” He added that according to police data, the homicide rate in Toronto has remained steady over the past 30 years. The difference, however, is that serious forms of violence such as homicide and aggra-

vated assault increasingly involve youth and, in particular, young racialized males. To begin addressing the issue, Olawoye noted the need to develop “shared metrics” that can be tracked across programs looking to reduce youth violence. “That’s the next conversation. It’s meticulous but it’s doable,” said Olawoye, explaining that having shared metrics will provide clarity in where they need to go to resolve the systemic issue of youth violence. “There are a lot of people doing different things.” Raj Kothari, managing partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, who co-chaired the taskforce alongside Olawoye, added the next step is to work together to come up with an agenda and timetable for their action plan. Not in isolation As a representative from the private sector, Kothari also emphasized the need for businesses to get involved. “Businesses can’t work in isolation,” he said. “B u s i n e s s p e o p l e need to learn how to give back. We believe this is an important issue that needs to be dealt with... because it impacts all of us.”

Scarborough Chorus connects to community through song angeline mair amair@insidetoronto.com Scarborough resident Judi Goodwin has one regret when it comes to her singing: that she didn’t join the Scarbrough Chorus sooner. She’s always had a passion for humming a tune so she joined the local chorus more than a year ago when she retired. “I wish I had made time when I was younger and still working; it’s just such a wonderful organization,” Goodwin said. “Everyone is so supportive, welcoming and it’s just so much fun.” The music is mainly traditional old-style barbershop but the group is expanding it’s repertoire with a spiritual songs, too. She adds, music in itself, is a great stress reliever in that it releases endorphins - it opens that “feel good” part of your brain.“At times my job was pretty stressful and at times I wish I had found the choir earlier.”

Members of the Scarborough Chorus, Sweet Adelines, perform in this file photo. The chorus welcomes new members.
She has taken the lead on marketing for the group, which as been around for 50 years, as it is looking for some fresh voices and wants to increase its members from 20 more than 25. Scarborough Chorus is a
division of Sweet Adelines International, which is an organization of about 30,000 women a capella barbershop singers. Another goal the Scarborough Chorus has this year is to connect with
its local community. To make this happen the chorus will not be competing internationally, which is something it usually does each year in Syracuse, New York. “We are concentrating on
community this year. We are trying to get out and sing as many times as we can publicly, which helps to build confidence and capability.” The Scarborough Chorus is already sharing their voice within the community. “We do some entertaining. We are singing at a nursing home and we are singing as part of a church service,” she said. “We’ll do fundraisers for people. We like to sing and get paid. That’s not to say we won’t sing and not get paid.” Goodwin added, “It’s a really good feeling to be involved with things within your own community, too. To give back and enjoy.” The Scarbrough Chorus has people who come from all walks of life: an event planner, a couple of teachers, retirees and a few people who work at libraries, Goodwin said. Chorus members travel from near and far: from across the street to as far away as Port Hope and range in age from 30 to 80 years old.

“I came in here thinking, I’m pretty good at singing and found out — pretty quickly — I had an awful lot to learn. It’s humbling. But it’s a true growth experience. I look back to where I was, to where I am and I know I got a long way to go. “There is a physical component to it as well. We do a minimal amount of choreography. Singing itself is very physical, which I didn’t know before I joined, but I would come home and feel - in a good way - exhausted because it’s physically demanding that you are using your core strength.” The choir is now accepting women who are over 18 and love to sing and can carry a tune. Prior music experience is not essential but it is helpful. Rehearsals are Wednesday nights from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lamoreux Church, 3333 Finch Ave. E.

Just disposing of the sediment that filled two Scarborough stormwater ponds to capacity will cost $239,000, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority has been told. A tradition to share across generations Many children know that Remembrance Day is a solemn time to commemorate soldiers’ achievements and sacrifices and to pay respect to solders who died in battle. But they might not know the significance behind the poppy or why we commemorate on November 11. Here is a brief history of some Remembrance Day traditions to share with the kids.
Lest We Forget
Armistice Day Remembrance Day was once known as Armistice Day because it marks the signing of the armistice that put an end to the hostilities of World War I. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, guns fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare between the Germans and Allied troops. The armistice agreement was signed in a French train carriage at 11 a.m.
Remembrance Day evolution Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day after World War II to commemorate soldiers from both world wars. It is now used as a way to pay hommage to any fallen soldier. Remembrance Day is a statutory holiday in many provinces and territories. Official national ceremonies are held at the National War Memorial. Events begin with the tolling of the Carillon in the Peace Tower, during which members of the Canadian Forces participate and congregate at Confederation Square. Similar ceremonies take place in provincial capitals across the country. Very often moments of silence are offered for lost lives.

Scarborough What about the poppies? One of the unifying symbols of Remembrance Day is the poppy that is worn to honor lost soldiers. The bold, red color of the flower has become an enduring symbol of those who died so that others may be free. The poppy became a symbol for a specific reason. Some of the most concentrated fighting of World War One took place in Flanders, a region in western Belgium. As a result of the fighting, most signs of natural life had been obliterated from the region, leaving behind mud and not much else. The only living thing to survive was the poppy flower, which bloomed with the coming of the warm weather the year after fighting in

the region had ceased. Poppies grow in disturbed soil and can lie dormant in the ground without germinating. Without the war, they may have never come to the surface. John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Canadian Armed Forces, was moved by the vision of poppies flowering in Flanders and wrote a poem titled “In Flanders Fields.” After the poem was published, it received international acclaim, and the poppy became a popular symbol of those lost in battle. Remembrance Day is celebrated every year, providing people humbled by the sacrifices of soldiers an opportunity to remember those soldiers’ efforts to secure freedom.

The Remembrance Day parade makes its way along Borough Drive to a ceremony at the Scarborough Civic Centre last year. This year’s civic centre ceremony is planned for this Sunday.

Lee’s grandfather fought against the communists in the Korean War, and uncles later served in the South Korean army, one of them in Vietnam. Those who understand Remembrance Day, including today’s veterans, need to teach younger generations about it, said Lee, now the officer commanding parachute training at Canadian Forces Base Trenton’s Advanced Warfare Centre. “I will always wear the poppy when it comes time for it.” This coming Monday, Remembrance Day ceremonies in Scarborough will take place, starting at 10:45 a.m., at the Scarborough Cenotaph standing between Kingston Road and Danforth Avenue. Another ceremony begins at 10:55 a.m. at the Waterside Theatre of the Toronto Zoo, where admission for veterans
and guests at the ceremony is free from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The zoo said parking that morning will be free for veterans, as well as other persons in uniform, including members of the emergency services and TTC. Another long-standing annual ceremony takes place at Scarborough Civic Centre on Sunday, Nov. 10, starting at 2 p.m., with marchers forming beforehand on Borough Drive to enter the building’s rotunda. When she later heard her ‘beau’ Freddy had been killed in Sicily, and his remains not found, Ivy “had cut his face from a photograph of his company and wore it in a locket throughout the war years.” After the war, Harris added, “Ivy placed the cut-out back into the photograph, which the family still has today.”

A Scarborough woman’s act of kindness was recently repaid in full. Back in April, Denise Grimes’ son’s friend needed a place to stay so she let him in her home. That good deed may have saved her life. Earlier this fall, Grimes was attacked by her pet pit bull. Her son’s friend Tyler Kelley, 17, rushed to her aid. “I jumped on top of him, trying to choke him out,” Kelley said of the dog. “Then as I’m choking him out, we both tried to open his jaw.” Grimes, 52, said her dog Stash got

Familes need to help protect elderly from lottery scams, police say CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Earlier this fall, a Toronto resident Janet Murphy (not her real name) received a telephone call informing her that she was the lucky winner of a multi-milliondollar jackpot. What followed was an increasingly troubling series of phone conversations that escalated from a request for her bank account information, to a list of elaborate instructions in order to claim her prize, to a shocking threat on her life when she ultimately refused all of her callers’ demands. “The last call was from someone telling me I must claim my prize, and since they had my telephone number and address, they would send someone to kill me,” she said, noting that she reported the exchange to Toronto police immediately after being threatened. Co n s t . We n d y Drummond said while scams such as the lottery hoax very rarely get to the point of threats, all suspicious unsolicited telephone exchanges where personal information and/or money are requested should be immediately reported to the police. Protect info “The bottom line is, there isn’t any type of company or program or charity or lottery that is going to be giving anything away out of the blue. “So the big thing is to ensure that you never, ever give any personal information away. Anyone who calls you asking for that type of information when you haven’t initiated it, that’s not how it works.” She urged people to never give anyone who calls unsolicited any banking information – such as
name of bank, account numbers or credit card information – or personal information – such as date of birth, home address, next of kin, or social insurance number. While such scams are often difficult to trace and prosecute – Murphy’s original caller, for instance, telephoned from a Jamaican area code – Drummond said it’s important to report all instances to police so that they can keep track of the calls and build a case to help identify the criminals behind them. “A lot of these scams are under-reported, especially with seniors,” she added. “Often, seniors don’t want their family to know that they’ve been vulnerable and t h e y d o n’t want anyone to think they’re no longer capable of handling themselves.” Another way police are trying to combat the ever-increasing numbers of scams often aimed primarily at seniors, Drummond noted, is through public education campaigns to raise awareness about the types of scams out there and how to avoid getting tangled up in any of them. One of the most common is called the grandparent or nephew scam. According to a recent public safety alert issued by Toronto Police Services, perpetrators of this type of scam will often obtain critical information about their prey from obituaries and social media – family information they then use to convince the senior that they are a relative (most commonly a grandchild) in desperate need of money. “Depending on the call, the caller may say that he or she has been in a car accident, is having trouble returning from a foreign country, or has been arrested and needs money to post bail,” the
alert reads. “The caller specifically requests that the grandparent not tell anyone else about the call on the premise that it would be embarrassing or otherwise create problems in the family.” Victims of the grandparent scam are then instructed by
the caller to send money via a wire transfer, such as Western Union or Money Gram. “When you’re dealing with seniors, even a smaller value may be a life’s savings for some,” she said. To help combat any such scams against vulnerable
seniors, Drummond said families and caregivers need to talk with their elderly loved ones in order to ensure they’re not being taken advantage of. “Talk to them and find out if they talked to anybody during the day. If they mention any suspicious phone calls, get as much
information as you can.” She said, “An article such as this is definitely a great starting point to begin that conversation.”
i
Scams can be reported to Scarborough police divisions at 416-808-4100, 416-808-4200 or 416-808-4300.

MADD launches annual anti-drunk driving campaign ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com In 2008, Angeliki Souranis’ 20-yearold son Craig was killed in an alcohol-related crash. As a tribute to him, Souranis shared her story Tuesday, Nov. 5, following the launch of the annual Mothers Against Drunk Driving Red Ribbon campaign. Souranis, now the president of MADD Canada, said Craig was a passenger in a van driven by an inexperienced young driver who had been drinking. “He crashed the van. My son was ejected, and the van landed on him, killing him instantly,” she said. “I had always told my son about drinking and driving, and I should’ve also stressed getting into a car with an impaired driver.” ‘profound grief’ Souranis said the “profound grief” she and her family have gone through is difficult to explain. “The person that I was did not survive.” Police, fire and EMS personnel gathered at Toronto police headquarters to kick off the campaign, which runs until Jan. 6.

Toronto Emergency Medical Services deputy chief Cindy Nicholson, left, and Toronto police Chief Bill Blair affix a ribbon to an ambulance during the launch Tuesday at police headquarters of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) - Canada Project Red Ribbon anti-drunk driving campaign. And MADD - Canada’s national president Angeliki Souranis displays a collage of victims of drunk driving at the launch.
As part of the initiative, volunteers will distribute millions of red ribbons to attach to vehicles, key chains, purses and backpacks as a reminder to drive sober. “I want all of the people in our city to understand the importance of this campaign to bring greater awareness to the need to keep our
roadways safe,” Police Chief Bill Blair said. De p u t y E M S C h i e f C i n d y Nicholson said the devastation caused by drunk drivers stays with first responders. “I certainly saw some of those awful tragedies and when you finish dealing with the patient, then you’ve
got the collateral damage of the family,” she said. “It’s horrific to watch them come into the hospital and realize that their loved one is gone.” Nicholson said she still has memories of an alcohol-related crash she responded to as a paramedic that took the life of a child.
Pointing to a poster with photos of hundreds of people who have lost their lives to drunk drivers, Souranis said, “It saddens me to no end to know that our sadness is multiplied hundreds and thousands of times.” Souranis stressed it’s a choice to drive impaired.

Black Friday will never be the same.
The safety of you and your family is the top priority of the chemical plants in your neighbourhood. This is why as members of Toronto East CAER we regularly test the community Siren System. In the unlikely event of an emergency, we will alert you to the risk by the activation of the Community Siren. Knowing what to do when you hear the siren will enable you to keep you and your family safe.
Unless advised to do so by authorities:
When you hear the siren you must Shelter In Place:
For the purposes of the siren test, the alert signal (whoop, whoop tone) will be sounded for 2 minutes. Following 5 minutes of silence, the all clear signal (monotone sound) will be sounded for 1 minute.
1. Go inside. Turn on local radio/TV. 2. Close all doors, windows and openings. 3. Shut off ventilation systems that draw outdoor air inside (fans; air conditioning units: clothes dryers; turn down furnace and close fireplace dampers.) 4. Listen to the radio or TV for further instructions and keep your phone lines free.
DO NOT evacuate or travel. DO NOT bring home children from school, or other family members from work. Know that they are also Sheltering In Place. When you have been advised of an ALL CLEAR, return all house settings to normal use.
Next Community Siren Test

Rosewood food drive collects thousands of donations A food drive in north Scarborough’s Rosewood neighbourhood collected nearly 3,000 non-perishable items door-to-door last month, a “fantastic” result organizers say shows the commitment of its volunteers. “The positive responses from our community go well beyond anything we
anticipated,” Courtney Fisher, president of the sponsoring Rosewood Taxpayers’ Association, said this week. Expanded area The effort was renamed the Scarborough Rosewood Food Drive because, in its second year, it expanded outside Rosewood to cover
three groups of condominium townhouses on Brimwood Boulevard. The items – including 30 pounds of candy gathered after Halloween – have been delivered to an area food bank at the Dorset Park Community Hub. Throughout the month, student volunteers delivered flyers Wednesdays to homes
volunteers would visit that Saturday or Sunday. The students wear badges, are supervised by adults and do not go to homes with “no solicitation” signs.
The association reported the number of volunteers helping out with the food drive involved has doubled from last year, and that it is already seeking responsible
students and reliable adults to join the drive in 2014.
