Whatever they do, the two hospitals will be under financial pressure, estimated to mean $28 million in unavoidable cuts next year and $20 million in 2015. Dr. Eric Hurowitz, a vice president of the TSH Medical Staff Association, said the past year saw the hospital cut services and beds and restrict operating room times. >>>FAILING, page 5

facing “harsh financial projections, aging facilities,” and with sub-standard equipment and significant debt to repay, would be stronger together. The merger would save just $13-15 million over three years, but Biron warned against choosing a return to the “good old days” of “separate hospitals going it alone,” suggesting a merged hospital can draw more patients by creating regional programs and centres of excellence.

Scarborough’s two hospitals are willing to merge, as long as provincial authorities pay the merger costs and start dealing with the massive challenge posed by their aging buildings. Boards of Rouge Valley Health System and The Scarborough Hospital, after six months of study, passed identical motions Tuesday, Nov. 12, night approving the move to a single hospital in principle. RVHS, with an annual budget of $327 million and 2,963 staff at its Centenary and AjaxPickering campuses, and TSH, with $356 million and 3,171 staff at the General and Birchmount, want the province to pay the $1.3-million study cost and $2.5 million for further months of “due diligence” work. The hospital directors also asked for “unavoidable onetime costs and ongoing operating costs” associated with the merger, which the study pegged at $29.5 million. “Mergers take time and money,” TSH CEO Robert Biron told his board. Biron said the hospitals,

Aware there’s a connection between low incomes and poor nutrition, and that some Toronto neighbourhoods have less access to affordable fresh food, the city has allowed the experimental market to go

to eight weekly spots since July 2012. At 50 Tuxedo, a Toronto Community Housing building, the plantains and the avocados are quick sellers, said Debbie Kirkland, a resident and a “community food leader” volunteer for the nonprofit FoodShare. The produce comes with nutritional tips and recipes, explaining such things as how

Convenience stores There are convenience stores near many of the buildings, and one reason the lines at 50 Tuxedo are shorter is that a specialty supermarket opened recently on Markham, not far north of the cul-desac. Some people are also making a living, legally or otherwise, by selling groceries in apartment neighbourhoods on their own, Emanuel acknowledged, adding “we have no interest in competing with private entrepreneurs who are making a living that way.” The city doesn’t want its rolling market to be seen as a competitor for local conve-

Healthy foods Another city program to supply convenience stores with produce and other healthy foods is in development, Emanuel said. The Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers, which has about 150 ownermembers in Toronto, has no problem with the mobile market, Gary Sands, a vice president, said this week. “Being able to open a grocery store is extremely expensive now,” Sands added, explaining why there aren’t enough independent stores in Toronto’s suburbs. “We can’t go head to head and win on price with the Walmarts and the Loblaws.”

FoodShare’s selection changes but it can’t please everybody. “If they’re asking for limes, we would have lemons,” said Kirkland, who then spotted Marilyn Hines, a regular customer from another building, coming to the door. “She’s going to be disappointed, because we have no apples.” Sure enough, Hines wanted apples, but she settled for pears and was more than satisfied with what the market offers. “It’s convenient, isn’t it? Youth suicide a critical social issue

n today’s Scarborough Mirror and on our website at www.scarboroughmirror.com, you’ll find the start of a multi-week feature all about youth suicide. It’s unusual we devote such space to a social problem. The fact is, this is a critical social issue and a problem that deserves public attention. The series is appearing in Metroland newspapers throughout Ontario and is the result of the work of a variety of reporters across the province, aided by the thoughts of experts on the subject, who helped shape the stories and the focus of our efforts. We think if you are a parent you should take the time to read the feature. Far too often, parents are surprised by an unexpected suicide. We hope that by providing this information, we will have provided an our view opportunity to reverse that possibility for young people in our comOur aim is to munity. In this series, we hope to give you have fewer an idea just how large a problem suicide is, help identify trends families left youth in a youth’s life to watch for that can lead to suicidal thoughts, provide a behind list of resources where one can find help or more information – and most of all to help our community’s parents and youth understand there is hope. There is a bright future for all youth. And it sometimes takes a community to help youth understand what the future holds. We sincerely hope one legacy of this project is to inform parents and give them the power and support needed to identify and help a youth in trouble. There’s a legacy for the media, too, here. Reporting on individual suicide has always been an informal taboo. But as those involved with the project thought about it, we all realized we’ve been touched by suicide in our personal lives. Suicide is more prevalent than sometimes we’d like to believe. And that makes it an issue worth bringing front-of-mind as a necessity for community discussion. Nov. 23 is International Survivors of Suicide Day – a day to recognize the families left behind. This feature series envelops that day and we hope we’re able to present a toolbox of opportunity, so ultimately there are fewer families left behind, and more youth leading wonderful, adventurous and unexpectedly full lives.

Polarized politics continue at city hall

T

he revolt at council earlier this week was intended to embarrass and further hobble the mayor. However, it proved ineffective at removing its intended target or asserting council’s authority. Instead, it sharpened the divisive culture at city hall. In many ways, council’s resolution asking Mayor Rob Ford to step down and stripping his office of power was just opportunism. But with both council and the mayor now playing polarized politics, it is exceedingly difficult to move to that middle ground where progress can be made. Few mayors started with a clearer, simpler vision than Ford. His vision was bolstered by a decade of non-stop campaigning. With a background limited to constituency work or quixotic charges, Mayor Ford had little experience, and perhaps less desire, for compromise. Once elected his early victories were due to the

david soknacki beyond the headlines strength of his mandate, and support from those who he had appointed to positions of authority. From the beginning he neglected the cultivation of his colleagues and molding the bureaucracy to his direction. Once the sense of obligation had worn off, the old approach of confrontation was not enough to carry controversial issues. Soon his plan for the waterfront was given up, original ideas for transit were derailed, and council significantly amended his budget. Yet he continued to make enemies by meddling in ward issues, and even voting against his own budget chief. It ought not to take such expensive and painful teaching to prove that the mayor has but one vote. To effectively manage an agenda, the mayor requires council’s support.

Bullying does not work. We’ve seen the results. Without a doubt, getting approval through a majority on council by means of collaboration and consensus takes work and time. It needs a plan that includes respect for people, listening, consulting, urging positions on others, adopting good ideas, and then gracefully compromising when necessary. To be effective over the long term means considerable behind-the-scenes work within the city organization, probably means setting up new systems and processes, making improvement continuously, and regularly publishing results. It does not necessarily mean new staff or re-organization, but must draw on people who share the vision. These are the attributes of leadership, which are absolutely vital in an organization as complex and large as our city government. One example of this type

of work was the city’s longterm fiscal plan in Mayor David Miller’s first term that set the debt ceiling, and lowered taxes for businesses and tenants. The concept required considerable effort prior to announcement, had stakeholders pre-sold, and remains so successful that it is renewed annually without difficulty. Unfortunately, these traits were not developed in Mayor Ford, who never found it easy to negotiate or reconcile his views with others. At least in the past he had the ability to make appointments, or could hire enough staff to manage portfolios and colleagues. Now that we have seen open mutiny on the floor of council, there is little chance and less willingness that council or the mayor will reach out to change the divisive culture at city hall or to provide leadership. Failing to merge would have left Scarborough ‘shortchanged’ >>>from page 1 “If that is fat, I don’t know what fat is going to be in the future,” said Hurowitz, a board member and member of the study group. “Physicians are leery, but we know where we are going if we stick to the status quo.” The study report (www.leadingforpatients.ca/preferred-integration-plan-final-report-appendices/) with supporting notes ran to 1,100 pages. Some TSH board members questioned its assumptions, in particular that a merged hospital with a regional oncology program could “repatriate” 50 per cent of patients from Scarborough currently getting cancer treatment at other hospitals. “We are confident the projections are achievable,” Biron responded. The hospitals have said a merger will not close any of their four campuses or emergency rooms. Working groups identified “opportunities” for consolidating programs, but Biron said deciding where each service would go after a merger will take more months, or years, of planning. The motion passed by the boards

also said the full benefits of a merger “can only be achieved if the capital infrastructure issues at the Scarborough and West Durham sites are resolved” and ask the province to pay for a multi-year planning exercise. Biron said that includes a feasibility study for “two facility projects”

A merged Scarborough hospital will need to spend $1 billion over the next 20 years to maintain its buildings to current standards, and another $500 million on planned capital projects such as renovations at Centenary, he explained. “Does a new hospital (in Scarborough) need to be built? That’s the conversation that needs to take place.” Scarborough’s hospitals are “highly unlikely” to get the capital investments they desperately need unless they merge, Biron said. “We will continue to be shortchanged.” The boards’ decision on a merger will next go to a meeting of the Central East Local Health Integration Network on Nov. 27 at the Don Beer Arena in Pickering. If the LHIN, which ordered the study, approves, there would be more consultation and due diligence before the hospitals make a final decision in February or March. The actual merger, including

selecting a new management team, will take three years. A citizen’s group called Friends of The Scarborough Hospital has said it cannot support a merger plan at this time and asked the TSH board at a previous meeting to slow the process down. “We think it’s just too quick,” Pat Sherman, a spokesperson, said Tuesday. Residents on TSH’s Community Advisory Committee also asked for more consultation time, but Biron said the LHIN would not extend it. Health coalition The Ontario Health Coalition, which opposes service cuts at either hospital and has been critical of the merger, staged demonstrations Saturday outside the offices of Scarborough MPPs. The group hosts a meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at TAIBU Community Health Centre on Tapscott Road, to decide its next actions after Tuesday’s votes. In recent years, both Scarborough hospitals have consolidated some services between their campuses. This, however, does not guarantee patients will show up at the right

place. TSH merged in-patient mental health services in 2009 to provide them at the Birchmount, but last week issued a release which noted more patients looking for mental health or addictions care have been appearing at the General, “where mental health resources are available but limited.” By going to the General, warned Sara Kirkup, a manager, “these patients may be unnecessarily increasing their wait times, especially if they must be transported to the Birchmount campus for inpatient admission and care.”

Scarborough concert raises funds for Phillipines ANGELINE MAIR amair@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s Filipino community is banding together to help friends and family in the Phillipines by collecting

donations in the aftermath of a devastating typhoon that hit the country on Saturday. Filipino Alliance Church of Toronto’s worship co-ordinator, Rei Jeriel Felomini, who was born in the Philipines not too

far from where Typhoon Haiyan hit killing thousands of people and flattening everything in its path said, “The loss is unfathomable.” “It’s indescribable how devastating it is.” Felomini said of

Haiyan and the storm surge that followed. The storm has caused widespread damage, including landslides and flooding. His family, including sisters and brothers, are in nearby

Samar island and although they are not directly hit by what may be one of the most powerful storms recorded, they are still suffering and require basic needs. Hard to reach family members When the typhoon hit, the Felomini family could not contact relatives overseas for at least 24 hours. “It was hard watching the news because we had no contact at all. And they were not even the ones hit directly,” Felomini said. “The thing I can do the most is really just pray. And try to contact them and comfort them. And tell them we will help as much as possible and giving everything we can. We are so fortunate that we are here in this country.” Because of the poor quality of building materials many homes in the Phillipines are made of, he knew they would be flattened by the typhoon. The thing I can do most “There’s no way they could save is pray...we will help as that. They would much as possible.. have to start back – Rei Felomini up again. Starting over again is hard to think about.” Starting over will be difficult for those affected by the typhoon, but efforts are ramping up to provide help. “As we collect more and more we will send it,” said Felomini. The church is asking for donations canned goods and clothes. It’s going to go directly to Tacloban, which is the main path of where everything was wiped out, under the Christian Mission Alliance of Canada. Also, he said, the church is getting ready to put all its donation money through this group and the one in the Philippines will pick it up. They are the ones who have the knowledge of what’s been effected most, said Felomini. Other fundraising efforts are also underway including a concert in Scarborough. Former Filipino Canadian Idol Martha Joy will host the concert on Friday, Nov. 22, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Rembrandt Banquet Hall, 930 Progress Ave. Tickets are $30. To purchase, visit http://www. helpthephilippines.ca/ To donate through the Canadian Red Cross, visit http://www.redcross.ca/donate/donate-online/donateto-the-typhoon-haiyan-fund Monetary donations raised by Canadians will be matched by the federal government. For every dollar donated to registered Canadian charities until Dec. 9, the government will donate $1 to the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund. In addition to matching donations by Canadians, the federal government provided $5 million in support to organizations to to be used for emergency relief such as shelter, food and water.

Scarborough remembers those who served ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

Dennis Mercer has been attending the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Scarborough Cenotaph for more than 45 years. He began at age six or seven with his parents and siblings. Now, the 53-year-old

attends the service with his son and grandchildren. “I make sure that they don’t forget. I really take this day seriously,” Mercer said. “In fact, I think this should be a national holiday.” Mercer noted that both of his grandfathers served in the Second World War. “They were front-line gunners. One came home, the

other one is laid to rest there,” he said. “I think about all the men and women who put their lives on the line so that we can live (like we do) today. I mean, every one of them are heroes.” Hundreds turned out to the Monday, Nov. 11, morning Remembrance Day ceremony at the cenotaph, located at

Kingston Road and Danforth Avenue. Students from nearby Cliffside Public School recited the poem In Flanders Fields as part of the service. Students involved “We got the school involved because our goal is to pass on the torch to the young chil-

dren,” said event organizer Joyce Geddes, who is the Zone D5 commander for the Royal Canadian Legion. “We need involvement of our youth to carry on the torch.” Over the decades, numerous Remembrance Day ceremonies have been held at the cenotaph. “Sometimes we’ve had

snow, sometimes we’ve had rain,” Geddes said. The rain held off for most of Monday’s ceremony. Geddes stressed people shouldn’t “just remember” on Remembrance Day. “Remember each and every day.”

The safety of you and your family is the top priority of the chemical plants in your neighbourhood. This is why as members of Toronto East CAER we regularly test the community Siren System. In the unlikely event of an emergency, we will alert you to the risk by the activation of the Community Siren. Knowing what to do when you hear the siren will enable you to keep you and your family safe.

Unless advised to do so by authorities:

When you hear the siren you must Shelter In Place:

For the purposes of the siren test, the alert signal (whoop, whoop tone) will be sounded for 2 minutes. Following 5 minutes of silence, the all clear signal (monotone sound) will be sounded for 1 minute.

1. Go inside. Turn on local radio/TV. 2. Close all doors, windows and openings. 3. Shut off ventilation systems that draw outdoor air inside (fans; air conditioning units: clothes dryers; turn down furnace and close fireplace dampers.) 4. Listen to the radio or TV for further instructions and keep your phone lines free.

DO NOT evacuate or travel. DO NOT bring home children from school, or other family members from work. Know that they are also Sheltering In Place. When you have been advised of an ALL CLEAR, return all house settings to normal use.

Next Community Siren Test

is scheduled for: 10:15 AM Thursday, November 14, 2013 For more information, please call the Community Information Line at (416) 287-4483.

Responsible Care is a certification mark of the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada. Dow Chemical Canada is a licensed user of the certification mark.

Couple seeks return of walker left in Morningside parking lot ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

An elderly handicapped woman is appealing for the return of her walker after she mistakenly left it in a Scarborough plaza last week. Helen Chadwick and her husband Gordon were having lunch with a group of friends at Shoeless Joe’s at Morningside Crossing

plaza near Morningside and Lawrence avenues last Thursday afternoon. After lunch, Helen used her walker

to get to her car. “Once I get sitting down, then my husband (usually) puts the walker in the back of the car,” Helen said. “But what he did was he went over and said goodbye to some of the people that were still in the parking lot and got in the car and we came home.” It wasn’t until the next day that the couple realized the walker had been left at the plaza. “We called security and

they pulled up the security video,” Gordon said. “They saw a lady went and got the walker and walked off with it.” Helen has been using a walker to get around since she underwent two surgeries on her leg in 2000. “I have lost all sense of balance and stability,” she said, noting life without the walker is “very difficult.” The $500 black Nexus

walker has a tag with Helen’s name on it along with a Shoppers Drug Mart sticker. “We need it back. Helen can’t even take one step without holding onto something,” Gordon said. “She has to have her walker.” Gordon is asking the woman who took the walker to return it either to the Shoeless Joe’s at Morningside Crossing plaza or bring it to

the Shoppers Drug Mart at McCowan Road and Lawrence Avenue. “Or let us know about it and we could pick it up,” Gordon said. “Our feeling is the person just doesn’t know how to return it to us. We will certainly not press any charges. We just need our walker back.”

Scarborough Music Theatre scores with Spamalot maria tzavaras scm@insidetoronto.com A well-deserved standing ovation was given to the cast and crew of Scarborough Music Theatre for their fantastic premiere show of the season, Spamalot. Just over two hours of comedic mayhem was dished out to an audience that responded with non-stop laughter, to the point where some of the dialogue was missed due to the laughing. For those who are fans of Monty Python, you know that this musical comedy is “lovingly ripped off” from the motion picture Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This musical’s book and lyrics are written by Eric Idle with music by Idle and John Du Prez. It’s a hilarious parody of the Arthurian Legend; King Arthur (Rich Burdett), accompanied by his sidekick Patsy (Dan MacEachern), needs to find knights to fulfill his quest from God, which is to find the Holy Grail. He eventually recruits Galahad (Darryl Burton), Sir Lancelot (Chris White) and Robin (John Mallett) and the five bumbling men venture off

to find the grail. “If God is all-knowing, why doesn’t he know where his cup is?” This line should give you an indication of what type of humour you can expect in this show. While the show lightly follows that plot line, it’s really a few hours of a funny journey, that in between, pokes fun at everything, and even includes modern references such as

mocking Miley Cyrus and a ‘crack is whack’ comment for Mayor Rob Ford. Besides the knights, and The Lady of the Lake, (Donna Lajeunesse), who plays a dramatic diva with an extraordinary voice to match, each cast member played multiple characters including Jill McMillan, Madison Chin, Megan Fielding, Sabrina Hooper, Jackie Smulan

and Erika Tucker, who combined played 17 roles. These ladies had multiple costume changes and danced throughout the show when they were not part of the supporting cast. There is also Todd Appleton, Clive Lacey, David Wicken and Ted Ambrose who portray a combined 12 roles between them. This includes Appleton’s hilarious portrayal of Prince Herbert, and Ambrose’s stand out scene/role as The French Taunter. The musical numbers are so funny and some of the best feature the entire cast, namely Knights of the Round Table. You will die of laughter in the all-male number His Name is Lancelot, and sing along with Patsy, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in Always Look on the Bright Side of Life. Another favourite number is Sir Galahad and The Lady of the Lake’s song called The Song That Goes Like This, that makes fun of the sappy musical numbers you would see in a Broadway show. Multiple scenes are accomplished by creative removable sets and there are so many amazing costumes. Think Robin Hood and any fairytale

you’ve ever seen and you can picture what they look like. While this show’s over-the-top silly, make no mistake the acting is phenomenal. The characters – their personas, one-liners and reactions – are priceless. Between the actors who play the lead roles, Patsy, Arthur and the knights, and all of the supporting roles, there are too many accolades to attribute. Leaving the theatre, I overheard a few people say the show was so good they would see it again. This statement perfectly sums up the entertainment value of this production. Performances are Nov. 14, 15, 16, 21 and 22 at 8 p.m. Matinees are Nov. 17, and 23 at 2 p.m. Tickets: $27. For tickets call 416-267-9292 or order online at www.theatrescarborough. com. Veteran auxiliary police officer has served 56 years ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

He’s a real classic. And so is his police cruiser. For the past six years, Scarborough’s Ed Hayward has been driving the oldest vehicle in the Toronto police fleet: a bright yellow 1957 Chevy. The 56-year veteran auxiliary officer typically takes the heritage vehicle to special events and parades. And he gets a lot of attention along the way. “The people are smiling. They give you the thumbs up driving by,” he said. “You may pull up to a light and somebody will come up, “Can I take pictures of it?” Hayward, 81, joined the auxiliary motorcycle unit back in 1957 on the suggestion of a neighbor who was a traffic sergeant. “At that time, you weren’t required to have a licence to drive a motorcycle,” he said, adding years later “I got my licence in the mail, believe it or not.” Hayward, a longtime Scarborough resident, spent 29 years with the motorcycle

unit where he trained other auxiliary officers, including the first auxiliary policewoman, on operating the Harley-Davidsons. “When you’re on a police motorcycle everybody kind of stays away from you and avoids getting too close,” he said. “You’re fairly safe, not that you can’t have an accident.” The service had a large fleet of motorcycles when Hayward joined. But that fleet has diminished over the years. “In the ’50s and the early ’60s, it was nothing for 50 of us to go out and ride a motorcycle,” Hayward said. “There were that many motorcycles down at central traffic. They must have had close to 100.” In the mid-’80s, Hayward was asked to set up an auxiliary marine unit and ended up spending 11 years there. He then spent 10 years at the police museum at headquarters before taking on the heritage vehicle. Hayward, the longest serving member of the police force, recently received the inaugural William Blair

Award to honour his “outstanding commitment to community service.” Auxiliary officers are volunteers who typically help regular uniform officers at special events or other details such as missing people searches. “We’d go out to riots, we did a bit of crossing guard duty when they heard somebody wasn’t going to be on their post,” Hayward said. “I was on several details for the Queen...I did get onboard the royal yacht when they were visiting. It was quite nice.” Why didn’t Hayward become a “real” police officer? “I was making more money in the printing business at the time,” he said. “Also height. In those days, you had to be six foot or taller.” Hayward has no plans to give up his volunteer position any time soon. He wants to stay on for at least four more years so he can reach 60 years of service. “I enjoy it. It’s a lot of fun,” he said of the job. “I want to keep going with it as long as I can.”

enzil Minnan-Wong has been around the block. I know this because he got his start on North York Council shortly after I got my start covering city politics, in the early 1990s. He wasn’t elected, initially; North York Council appointed him to fill the seat left vacant with the passing of former councillor Barry Burton. Unlike other candidates for the appointment, Minnan-Wong would not promise to stay out of the next election. Why should he? he argued. If he did a good job in the remaining months of the term, he’d like to be re-elected. It was refreshing candor. North York council was at that time filled with councillors who’d lied about their intentions after taking appointments and become fixtures. Minnan-Wong, a young and committed Progressive Conservative operative, at least wore his ambition on his sleeve. I had to hand it to him.

david nickle the city A couple decades later, a somewhat more cautious Minnan-Wong edges toward committing to a mayoralty run. A longtime member of Mayor Rob Ford’s cabinet-like executive committee, he started this week at loggerheads with the mayor over his crack-smoking, harddrinking lifestyle. Between the time I write this and the time you read this, the two will have faced off on the floor of Toronto Council. But Tuesday, MinnanWong made it clear he is seriously considering a more serious face off: namely, taking on Ford and others in the 2014 election for the mayoralty. It’s a serious consideration. In early polls, Minnan-Wong’s not been much of a factor. The fantasy-football mayor’s race has been dominated by Olivia Chow, Ford, Karen

Stintz and John Tory. With ex-Scarborough councillor David Soknacki already having declared his interest along with Ford and Stintz, the rightof-centre ballot is already crowded. If Tory decides to run, it’ll be a crowded pack, running against what so far seems to be a more disciplined ticket on the left, supporting Chow. If Minnan-Wong runs and loses, it will mean at least a pause in a long political career, and possibly the end of it. And it could mean having contributed to a left-of-centre Chow mayoralty — a continuation of the Miller administration that Minnan-Wong so consistently opposed. On the other hand, the timing has never been better for Minnan-Wong. The question he’s got to ask is whether that shot at being mayor is worth putting at risk pretty much everything else.

Ford bobbleheads a big hit DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Enthusiastic supporters, sneering opponents and curious collectors of bobble-headed dolls filled Toronto City Hall’s rotunda this week waiting for Mayor Rob Ford to sell them a souvenir Rob Ford doll. The dolls were on sale for $20, with a portion of the take going to the city’s United Way fundraising drive. While the dolls were to go on sale at 9 a.m., volunteers and staff members didn’t show up with boxes until just before 10:30 a.m.. The Mayor Rob Ford bobblehead doll was a big hit at city hall, with potential buyers lining up as early as 6 a.m. to buy one of the 1,000 dolls up for sale at $20 each. A portion of the proceeds went to the city’s United Way fund.

“I think most people here are Rob Ford fans,” he said. “They’re here to show their support for his fiscal responsibility, the job he’s been doing here at city hall and hopefully to help him get past the trouble he’s been having in his personal life.” Rowland said the troubles — which include an admission by Ford of having smoked crack cocaine “in a drunken stupor,” and a new video showing a frenetic Ford talking about committing “first degree murder” and other acts of violence — haven’t impacted his support. “It makes him a real person,” he said. “Everyone has problems. He’s finally admitted it, seems to be getting the help for this.”

Pet lovers helping pet owners Like their customers, the staff of Global Pet Foods (Brimley & Huntingwood) are also pet owners who are passionate about their loving companions. They focus on keeping up-to-date with the latest in pet nutrition, and provide a selection of all-natural pet products. Like humans, pets get sick from time to time, and it’s easy to treat their illness when you can recognize common symptoms: Food Allergies: Two major area of allergies are flea allergies and food allergies. In dogs and cats, the symptoms of hyper-sensitivity are typically seen in the pet’s skin and coat, but may include digestive upset and cystitis in cats. Some common symptoms include: hot spots, inflamed ears, excessive paw licking, biting at the root of the tail, and smelly skin. To reduce inflammation and irritation from bites, topicals can be used to soothe and heal skin. Fleas can be prevented by using natural flea control products available at Global Pet Foods. The best way to pinpoint an allergy is through a controlled elimination diet involving a novel protein, single uncommon carbohydrate, and high-quality fatty acid source. Hypo-allergenic food with

probiotic and essential fatty acid (Omega3-6) supplements can promote healing from the inside out.

Arthritis: Foods for arthritic pets should be free of unnecessary chemical additives, colourings or preservatives. It’s also a good idea to incorporate raw food into your pet’s diet. Supplementing high-quality kibble with enzymes to facilitate maximum absorption of nutrients or a daily antioxidant supplement can prevent free radical damage. Furthermore, a balanced Omega3-6 fatty acid supplement will prevent or minimize inflamed joints, and kelp or sea vegetation will give safe levels of minerals support. If you are concerned about your pet’s arthritic pain, Global Pet Foods also carries a selection of natural joint pain-relief supplements. Common illnesses: Bladder infections, urinary tract infections,

cystitis, urinary incontinence and various types of bladder stones are a common problem affecting the health and well-being of our pets. When symptoms are recognized early, alterations in diet and the use of urinary supplements often alleviate the problem. We suggest a high quality oil supplement containing fish oil, which will provide Vitamins A & D in order to promote a healthy urinary tract. Adding cranberry and blueberry powder which contains Hippuric Acid is another way to prevent bacteria from adhering to the lining of the urinary tract. The staff of Global Pet Foods Brimley go out of their way to create a welcoming enviroment for customers and their pets – and even pamper visiting furry friends with lots of treats and love! From the puppy stage, the staff build a relationship with customers, so not only do they remember what your dog likes the most, they also track your pets’ health history in order to recommend the most suitable products. Global Pet Foods is located at 2369 Brimley Rd., in the Chartwell Shopping Centre (Brimley & Huntingwood). For more information, please call (416)298-0028.

‘Flexibility’ on local Eglinton LRT portion possible: Murray RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com O n t a r i o’s M i n i s t e r o f Transportation provided a spirited defence of light rail technology even as he opened the door – ever so slightly – to burying the entire Eglinton Crosstown LRT line. Transit Minister Glen Murray, who has referred to the Crosstown as a subway in the past since the majority of its 19-kilometre route runs under Eglinton Avenue, was non-committal when asked by reporters whether the LRT would still run at street level into Scarborough as planned, saying Metrolinx would make the final call. “That will be a decision of Metrolinx, not mine,” said Murray. Murray was in north Toronto Tuesday morning

to announce the awarding of a contract to excavate 3.25 kilometres of tunnel for the Eglinton LRT project between Brentcliffe Road and Yonge Street. He seemed to suggest it was not a foregone conclusion the Crosstown will run at-grade east of Brentcliffe Road in Leaside to Kennedy station in Scarborough. “We’re building a heck of a lot of kilometres and that plan hasn’t changed much,” he said. “To be completely inflexible would be ridiculous, but to abandon the plan would also be ridiculous.” He said discussions were taking place with both Metrolinx and some MPPs on adding “flexibility” to the Crosstown route. In his 30-minute media address at Metrolinx’s community office near the intersec-

tion of Eglinton Avenue and Dufferin Street, Murray criticized the opposition Provincial Conservatives and ridiculed party leader Tim Hudak whom he accused of propagating “fibs” about light rail technology. “You have Mr. Hudak saying Eglinton (Crosstown) will rip up the roads,” said Murray. “Well, anyone who took the SRT (Scarborough RT) knows there’s not a single metre, never mind a kilometre, running on a street.” Murray also confirmed media reports of costs arising from the cancellation of a maintenance and storage facility intended for light rail vehicles, which would have served the Scarborough LRT. Without going into specifics, he said the decision to cancel the facility would only

result in a “marginal” increase to the $85 million in penalties the city must already pay for opting to cancel the sevenstop LRT which would have run along the Scarborough RT corridor. Scarborough RT In the last six months both the provincial Liberals and city council endorsed opposing subway plans to replace the aging Scarborough RT line. The subway proposals themselves replace the LRT plan fully-funded by the province which was shelved by Metrolinx in the summer after council withdrew its support for the project. L RT t e c h n o l o g y h a s long been controversial in Scarborough, with plenty of opposition from residents worried the Crosstown will

limit the ability for cars to make turns at various intersections along Eglinton Avenue East despite assurances to the contrary from Metrolinx. Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig said the available road space along Eglinton Avenue East won’t affect current car traffic as the Crosstown will run in dedicated transit lanes when it begins service in 2020. Widen Eglinton “We are able to widen Eglinton so there’s no loss of traffic lanes throughout that entire length,” he said. “We are building in provisions that basically address issues associated with building capacity on the transportation system for all users, that’s the objective.”

With McCuaig beside him, Murray announced a $177 million tunnelling contract has been awarded for a joint bid from Canadian construction company Aecon Group and Spanish firm Dragados. The companies are also taking part in construction work for both the TTC’s Spadina s u bw a y e x t e n s i o n a n d Metrolinx’s Union Pearson Express air rail link. Eastern tunnel construction is not expected to begin until 2015, to allow enough time for the construction of twin launch shafts for deploying massive boring machines in both directions below Eglinton between Brentcliffe and Yonge. The machines are currently at work west of Allen Road.

CANADIAN TIRE AT 3495 LAWRENCE AVE. E. CELEBRATES GRAND RE-OPENING

Staff photo/DAN PEARCE

Mr. and Mrs. Claus inspect the floats at the media preview last Tuesday for this year’s Santa Claus parade, which takes place this Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

Santa set for annual parade on Sunday FANNIE sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Surrounded by giant colourful floats, dozens of racks of costumes and smiling children of all ages, the Christmas season was officially launched last Tuesday inside St. Nicholas’ secret workshop with details of this year’s Santa Claus Parade. The 109th Santa Claus Parade, to be held Sunday, will feature more than 18 floats, hundreds of costumed participants and live bands. The parade will get going at Christie Pits on Bloor Street, east of Ossington Avenue, at 12:30 p.m. and head east to Avenue Road. It will then turn south before continuing east on Wellington Street before ending at St. Lawrence Market at Front and Jarvis streets. Huge crowds The 6.2-kilometre parade is expected to draw some 800,000 people along the route, Peter Beresford, president of the Santa Claus Parade, said during the launch inside the Weston Road and Wilson Avenue workshop. Some additions have been made to the parade this year. Runners can now lace up

for the Holly Jolly Fun Run, a five-kilometre trek that will start at noon on parade day and follow the same route. The cost is $100 per participant, and runners will be provided with red toques and mittens, and are encouraged to dress up for the occasion. Proceeds will go to supporting the parade, and charitable tax receipts will be issued. The run is limited to 2,000 participants. Santa Snaps Also new is the addition of the SantaSnaps mobile photo app. Available for both IOS and Android, the app allows additions to pictures, such as adding red noses, mistletoe and elves. Like last year, Santa’s float will be equipped with a Santa Cam to capture the crowd as parade-goers watch Santa make his way through the streets. Snapshots will be posted on the Santa Claus Parade website – www.thesantaclausparade.ca – and available for print about one week after the parade. As of Nov. 1, some 65 Canadian Tire stores are participating in the Red Nose Drive across the GTA in support of its Jumpstart

program, a national charitable program helping financially disadvantaged kids participate in organized sport and recreation. Half the proceeds from the noses will go to Jumpstart and the other half to the Santa Claus Parade.

Canadian Tire at 3495 Lawrence Ave. E. re-opened its doors to customers on November 7.The store has a fresh interior with a brand new layout making it easier for customers to navigate through the aisles.

There’s another way out By Laurie Watt and Janis Ramsay

The first instalment of our series sheds light on the serious issue of youth suicide and its prevalence, in the hope that awareness can aid suicide prevention

As soon as I took my hand off his chest, I said ‘OK, he’s cold.’ I lifted my hand and said ‘I accept.’ That was it. You can’t do anything more about death.” Her son was Alex Clarke, an 18-year-old who loved the outdoors, who committed suicide June 11 leaving behind his mom, sister, a girlfriend, many relatives, lots of friends and a job. The death of a child is a parent’s worst nightmare. Kari and Ken Smith can understand the devastation suicide can

cause. When their 17-yearold son, Cody, failed to show up at the breakfast table one February morning, the couple realized something was amiss and went upstairs to investigate. “My husband went up fi rst and I heard him screaming ‘no, no, no’ and then I remember screaming so loud and for so long,” Kari said. The reason why still torments the Smiths. “He was very strong willed. We thought he had a great future. He talked about this future. I had no idea he couldn’t help himself. Why couldn’t he come to us? “He was our everything!” These parents are not alone in their anguish.

Each week, three Ontario teens end their lives, Children’s Mental Health Ontario (CMHO) reports. CMHO has represented and supported the providers of child and youth mental health treatment services throughout Ontario since 1972. Its core membership consists of more than 80 community-based children’s mental health centres that serve some 150,000 children and their families annually. Nationwide, there are 10 teens who kill themselves weekly and, for each one, there may be another 200 who attempt suicide, according to University of Ottawa research. In 2012, Kids’ Help Phone reported six per cent of the 5,000 calls received each week – which amounts to 300 calls – were related to suicide. Those considering suicide, youth affected by a suicide in their school or community, and those worried

about a friend, for example, would afflict many youth who commit be included in these statistics. suicide. Bullying can take a toll on kids who lack confidence >>>from page 32 others are,” Floyd said. “It’s a sense of falling behind and feeling excluded from the hopefulness others seem to feel.” Bullying can shake those who have a low self image more profoundly, triggering an attempt to end their lives. “One-in-four kids in Ontario has been bullied in the past year. Most kids are able to deal with it and move on, but some kids are vulnerable because they don’t have the confidence and skills to take it in stride or bounce back,” Floyd said. There is hope. The key for parents is to raise a resilient child, who can cope with the bumps and bruises along the way, and grow into a resilient adult who can deal with the stresses of working in uncertain times, he said. Many mental health issues emerge before age 20. Ontario acknowledged this two years ago with a $257-million mental health strategy for children, which aims to address the long waiting lists by bolstering not only community supports but linking mental health nurses with schools. The earlier an individual can get help, the better chances he will acquire the tools he needs to be resilient enough to cope with his struggles. “Suicide is the end point for people whose mental health needs were not appropriately addressed,” Floyd said. “We have to get over the squeamishness about raising the possibility there’s a mental health issue at play and have the very focused deliberate outreach to the person who is struggling, to give them an opportunity to talk and give us the opportunity to connect them with the help they need.”

Maddie is now laughing and talking with her brother instead of fighting with him, doing homework with her dad and hiking and doing photography with her mom. The family has put a lot of effort into spending time together and keeping communication open. “Listen to what your children are saying and always be there to support them,” Maddie’s mother said. “Hang in there, there is light at the end of the tunnel and if you can get through it together things will turn out.” Maddie has pruned her Facebook friends from more than 300 to 92, most of them relatives, and has changed her phone number. She changed schools in September, and once again loves waking up for classes. She is working to become a peer tutor at school, where one of the things she will be trained to do is help other students who are facing grief or suicidal thoughts. “No one should ever be afraid to need help,” she said. “People may judge you, but once you get help you’ll be able to ignore judgment. Cards of Thanks HOLY SPIRIT, Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who will give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory, Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favour has been granted. M.L.
