Bruce Kidd: 10th principal at University of Toronto Scarborough Academic, author, athlete, activist sworn in TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Bruce Kidd was officially installed as the 10th principal of the University of Toronto Scarborough Friday, promising to help further the growth of the school and its surrounding community. Kidd also officially became vice-president of the entire University of Toronto. He has served as both on an interim basis since March 2014, following previous principal Franco Vaccarino’s transition to president of the University of Guelph. In December 2014, it was announced Kidd would permanently assume the roles. “I am thrilled to have this opportunity,” he said during his installation ceremony at UTSC, in the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre’s Field House. “UTSC continues to fulfill its original promise as an innovative, accessible, research-intensive university, preparing students for productive careers and strengthened citizenship through outstanding programs,” he added. “The idea is to guide future growth to ensure that it enhances the capacity for research, teaching and community engagement of the university, as well as the economic, cultural, athletic and social life of eastern Toronto.” He noted his support for the existing UTSC strategic and master plans, which outline the school’s development through the next 50 years. “These are comprehensive, intelligent plans. arching priority will be to advance them,” he said. “We are creating new academic programs and strengthening existing ones to meet the emerging needs of the next generation, which in turn means hiring additional faculty and staff, opening new academic buildings, cultural facilities, residences and student-life facilities, all in a way that ensures excellence, accessibility and equity.” A host of community members, students, faculty and politicians joined Kidd’s friends and family at the ceremony, giving him an extended standing ovation after his speech. Many of his University of Toronto colleagues addressed the crowd, each delivering glowing praise. “What a truly perfect fit to have someone of his character and accomplishments to lead this campus forward,” said University of Toronto president Meric Gertler. “Bruce Kidd embodies the ethos of this campus so well – his

fundamental commitments to inclusiveness, community, excellence and innovation, his ability to connect with everyone he meets, his easy rapport with students, his warmth and generosity. In sum, Bruce’s character is ideally suited to guide UTSC through the next chapter in its history.” As well as an accomplished academic and author, Kidd is a decorated athlete and sports supporter. The longdistance runner is the only person elected to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame twice, once as an athlete and again as a builder. A two-time Canadian Athlete of the Year, he won gold and bronze at the 1962 Commonwealth Games and represented Canada at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Founding chair of the Olympic Academy of Canada and honorar y member of the Canadian Olympic Committee, he was awarded an Education and Sport Award by the International Olympic Committee in 2001. Also a dedicated humanitarian, he received the Order of Canada for having “devoted his life to eradicating sexism and racism in sporting communities around the world,” and was honoured by the United Nations for “his valuable contribution as a sports person to the campaign for the elimination of apartheid and the establishment of a non-racial and democratic society in South Africa.” Kidd first landed at the University of Toronto as a member of its track-and-field team while attending high school at Malvern Collegiate Institute. In 1970, he began teaching at UTSC, going on to hold many leadership positions there.

Impaired driving charge laid following fatal hit and run Pedestrian killed crossing McCowan south of Finch A 28-year-old man has been charged with impaired driving offences after a hit and run left a man dead Tuesday. Police said the victim, 25, was attempting to cross McCowan Road, on the north side of Kenhatch Boulevard, when he was struck by a northbound Pontiac Grand Am around 6 a.m. The victim, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the

scene. “The vehicle, however, continued northbound, coming to a stop north of Finch,” Const. Clint Stibbe said. The car’s occupants, believed to be two men, got out of the vehicle and fled. The hit-and-run car, a Pontiac Grand Am, sustained a shattered windshield and damage to its front end. Sean England, of Toronto,

has been charged with five offences, including impaired operation of a motor vehicle cause death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle cause death. Police are searching for England’s passenger who was in the car at the time of the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416808-1900 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477.

Toddler injured in Birchmount collision A toddler is in critical condition following a multi-vehicle crash in Scarborough Monday near 3030 Birchmount Rd., north of Finch Avenue, at 9:18 p.m. Police said a southbound 2008 Nissan driven by a

29-year-old man crossed into the northbound lanes. It sideswiped a northbound Toyota driven by a 33-yearold woman and then struck a 2009 Subaru driven by a 47-year-old woman. An 18-month-old in the

Nissan suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Hospital for Sick Children via an emergency run.

he Toronto Transit Commission’s board is on the right track when it comes to the balanced approach it decided to take this week regarding fare increases. At its meeting, the board voted to increase cash fares for adults by 25 cents, up to $3.25, and to increase the price of an adult token to $2.90. Considering one can literally ride the TTC the entire length and breadth of Toronto for that price, it’s a more than reasonable cost. At the same time, the board wisely decided not to increase the cost of the Metropass, which now goes for $141.50. The monthly pass offers unlimited rides. It is a valuable item based on the service it provides, but its cost is high relative to other North American cities and it has been the chosen route for our view fare hikes for too long. TTC board chair Josh Colle There’s a cost summed it up well when he said the system cannot rely on to pay for Metropass users as an “endless well of money.” It also doesn’t good transit hurt to reward the loyalty of those who use the TTC multiple times every day. The cash fare and token fee hikes only apply to adult fares. The TTC will keep fares for seniors and students where they are, at $2 cash and $1.95 for tokens, which is a good decision. And, of course, due to a decision by city council last year championed by Mayor John Tory, children under 12 ride the system for free. This is all part of having a grown-up transit system in Toronto. The whining that takes place every time a fare increase is mentioned is unreasonable. There’s a price for good transit, and part of that must be paid by those who use the service. That being said, all city taxpayers must continue to pay for the TTC whether they ride it or prefer to drive their cars or use their bikes. Property taxpayers can’t be complaining about the cost of building infrastructure if they want to continue living in one of the best cities in the world. However, that does not let the federal and provincial governments off the hook when it comes to funding an essential service in Canada’s largest city. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made some big promises along those lines during the election campaign, and we expect him to honour them.

Road to transit parity barely a ‘goat-path’ John Tory often talks a bit of sense – and he did so on Monday when asked what he thought about the thenimminent fare hike under debate at the Toronto Transit Commission. “I believe fares should be adjusted for every year because the cost of running the system goes up and we have to maintain the financial viability,” said the mayor. “I think it’s fair that those who use the system pay their share of the cost.” This raised some eyebrows, if only because Tory had made some hay during the election and earlier this year in freezing transit fares, for 2014. That he seemed fine with a 25-cent hike on the cash fare and a 10-cent hike on tokens... well that seemed a reversal. Of course, Tory had only made the promise for 2014, and made it clear he never intended there be fare freezes all the way

david nickle the city down. And his position, that as costs to deliver a service increase so should the cost to the user, is as sensible as is his notion that services as they stand shouldn’t be cut. Service should be reliable, and books should be balanced. So far so good. It is a shame, as my colleague Rahul Gupta remarked during the debate at the TTC, that the mayor couldn’t take the same even-handed approach to other matters of transportation financing, such as road tolls. It’s a shame, sure, but it’s also an immovable factor in the politics of mobility, the disparity between the privileges of drivers and transit users respectively. The latter occupy the bottom end of things.

Since the provincial government stopped funding operating costs for the Toronto Transit Commission, an uneasy balance of property taxpayers and transit users have been covering the cost of getting around to a greater and greater degree. Fares rise every year or so, and service fluctuates too, and when service drops and fares rise, a portion of those transit riders who can afford to, use their cars more. The rest... well they get used to disappointment. Drivers, on the other hand, are the demographic of choice, particularly for more conservative politicians, but not limited to that. After the 2010 municipal election, politicians from across the political spectrum voted to shut down the vehicle registration tax along with then-mayor Rob Ford. Attempts to put a bike lane on Jarvis Street were similarly squashed.

And when Tory was elected, one of the first things he did was take immediate action to battle one of the few remaining irritants to the pampered driver: downtown traffic congestion in the presence of construction. So while it would be sensible to look at revenue tools such as modest road tolls to help fund, for instance, the maintenance and reconstruction of the Gardiner Expressway, or more sensibly still, road decongesting public transit, the road to that solution is barely a goat-path these days. Still, baby steps are better than none: and if a mayor can recognize decent public service requires a decent amount of revenue, well, that is at least a very tiny step in the right direction.

Accepting their award by singing in four-part harmony were siblings Bilal, Hana, Hasna and Sarah Syed, all volunteers since they were young children. Hasna said they founded Global Youth Impact because they grew up interested in humanitarian affairs and wanted to give youth a plat-

form to make a change in the world. Roy Chubb, principal of Scarborough’s Ste. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic Elementary School, said his Urban Hero Award was really a recognition of the work teachers and support staff at the school do every day, and that “they too can do wonderful things for our community.” On the stage, poet Jeevan

‘Fancy’ Fort York bridge gets go-ahead Fort York will get its “fancy” pedestrian and cycling bridge after all. The city announced the $19.7-million project will begin construction next spring and open in 2017. The Fort York Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge will span in separate sections across two railway corridors, connecting three downtown parks with the Fort York grounds. The project was cancelled in 2011 by then-mayor Rob Ford and his suburban allies on council, including David Shiner, who decried its ornate design as too expensive. Scarborough seniors warned about ‘blessing’ thefts Police in north Scarborough want to warn Chinese seniors about three women who steal valuables after pretending to bless them. Tw o o f t h e w o m e n approach Cantonese or Mandarin-speaking seniors who are alone at local shopping malls, plazas and grocery stores, Toronto Police in 42 Division said Wednesday. They tell the senior they

Calls for stop sign on Dorcot renewed after boy, 6, hit while crossing road A Scarborough community group is renewing its calls for traffic calming along Dorcot Avenue after a sixyear-old boy was struck by a car on the residential street Tuesday. Police said the boy, who was with his father, was crossing onto Dorcot east of Munson Crescent where he was hit around 8 a.m. The child suffered minor head and leg injuries and was taken to hospital. No charges were laid against the driver, police said. The Midland Park Community Association has long been asking for traffic calming measures on Dorcot, which runs

north of Lawrence Avenue between Midland Avenue and Brimley Road. Specifically, the association is seeking the pedestrian crossover at Dorcot and Munson replaced with a three-way stop sign. Mark Weiser, the association’s president, said witnesses told him the child was about 50 inches away from the crosswalk when he was struck. Three city traffic studies over the years have all found that a threeway stop at Dorcot and Munson is not warranted. Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson has recently asked city staff to further

review the matter and provide a report to community council. “Pedestrians’ lives are more important than the finite rules that must be followed,” Weiser said. “We have been saying for 10 years that this street is dangerous, that this pedestrian crossing is not safe for children, that sooner or later someone’s going to get hit.”

A “balanced approach” taken by the TTC’s board of directors means cash fares and token prices are going up for 2016, but not Metropasses. The board voted unanimously to support staff recommendations for next year’s TTC and Wheel-Trans operating budgets, which will include a 25-cent increase to fares paid by cash to $3.25. The cost of a token will go up 10 cents to $2.90 per token. The board also supported keeping the price of the Metropass static following years of increases, as well as freezing all student and seniors’ fares for the time being. TTC chair Josh Colle said the decision was a realization the TTC can’t keep raising Metropass prices which have increased to $141.50, among the highest-priced unlimited travel pass among North American transit providers, while keeping cash fares unchanged. “At a certain point we can’t keep continuing to rely on the Metropass user as an endless well of money we can just go to,” said Colle after the board vote Monday at Toronto City Hall. “Could we lose some ridership? Staff has factored that in but on the whole we still come up with more revenue.” The decision means the TTC faces a funding gap of

around $58 million for next year’s operating budget, which it will attempt to fill by seeking an increase in the annual per-rider subsidy allocated to it by Toronto council. Last year, the TTC received almost $480 million from the city for the 2015 subsidy, which also funded $95 million in service improvements trumpeted by Colle, as well as Mayor John Tory. $41 million more This time around, Colle said the TTC would ask for $41 million more than last year, which will also fund nearly $14 million worth of service enhancements: improving Queen and King streetcar operations, boosting subway and bus reliability, and opening the subway earlier on Sunday mornings. Other plans like adding streetcar service to Cherry Street, will remain unfunded. tough choice Colle said if council doesn’t accept the TTC’s subsidy request, a tough choice would have to be made by the board to cut service or further raise fares. “Really, the only two options we have are to look at fares or service, so if the city is unable to fill the gap I’m sure there will be a robust debate back at this table,” he said. Byford, Colle said the transit commission was hamstrung by not knowing the exact amount the city will give for this year’s subsidy. The amount is determined as part of the city’s annual budget deliberations and won’t be known until next year. The board ultimately decided to reject TTC board member Joe Mihevc’s motion to defer approval of the TTC budget until after the subsidy level is known. It also rejected an alternate pricing scheme introduced by commissioner John Campbell, who sought across the board fare increases to net an estimated $47 million in future revenue. The board however supported Councillor Vince Crisanti’s motion to freeze seniors’ and student fares pending a review of transit equity policies which is expected to take place early next year. It also unanimously endorsed Colle’s motion to find more revenue from TTC licencing and merchandise. As the chair pointed out, the TTC doesn’t make a cent off items bearing the transit commission’s likeness unlike other major transit agencies like London’s Underground. warn of CRA scam wPolice Toronto police are warning the public about a fraud scam in which people impersonate Canada Revenue Agency officials and demand immediate payment for erroneous unpaid taxes after “dozens of complaints” in the past week. The years-long scam involves perpetrators calling and threatening arrest by RCMP officers unless funds are paid immediately. Police said the latest iteration of the scam involves callers directing residents to go to their nearest post office and to send the money to a Connecticut address using MoneyGram. Canada Revenue Agency never contacts people by phone and never arrests someone for outstanding balances owed, police said. Fraudsters share personal information about their targeted victims in an attempt to appear legitimate. But that information is easily gained from victims’ social media accounts, like LinkedIn, Facebook or Instagram, Toronto police fraud Const.

Jeevan Bhagwat Founder of Scarborough Poetry Club has written two books

ward-winning poet Jeevan Bhagwat is a 2015 Urban Hero for his contributions to Scarborough’s arts community. Bhagwat, a member of The League of Canadian Poets, co-founded the Scarborough Poetry Club this year along with Anna Nieminen. The club, which meets monthly at Agincourt Library, gives Scarborough residents an opportunity to connect with poets and poetry, while working on and sharing writing. It also helps writers gain exposure, with tips on how to publish work, and the group plans to feature members’ poems publicly during National Poetry Month. “We wanted to give our community a voice, and this seemed to be a perfect vehicle to do that,” Bhagwat said. “There are a lot of writers here in Scarborough, and we need to have our writers’ voices being heard as well.” Several of Bhagwat’s poems are inspired by Scarborough and its parks. A poem he wrote about the Agincourt community is featured on the Toronto Public Library’s Toronto Poetry Map, which lets people explore the city through poetry. The map can be found at www.torontopoetry.ca “I think it’s important to promote Scarborough,” he said. “I hope that when people read my poems, they would be inspired to go out and visit these parks and appreciate the wonderful green spaces that we have here.” Along with Nieminen, he also leads poetry walks in Scarborough that allow people to connect with the

arts & culture community through poetry. Bhagwat, who currently lives in Agincourt, was born in Trinidad before moving to Scarborough as a child. The 47 year old works as a media consultant, writing in his free time. He fell in love with poetry while visiting his school library at Danforth Gardens Public School and Albert Campbell Library. “I started writing poetry at a very young age,” he said. “The act of writing enables me to be more in touch with myself and to make sense of my world and what’s happening in my world, and it’s an outlet for me to express myself in ways that I wouldn’t be able to in some alternate format.” He has published two poetry books: The Weight of Dreams in 2012 and Night Shadows in 1998. Many of his pieces have appeared in literary journals and websites throughout North America. He’s working on a novel he hopes to finish

Going The Extra Smile program helps out residents in need

heppard Village Dental holds an annual Going The Extra Smile program that provides dental care to those in the community who need it, but cannot afford to pay for it. In its first two years the program has seen more than 130 patients and provided more than $32,000 of dental treatment to residents of Scarborough in need. Staff at the clinic realized they got a lot of satisfaction from this act of giving their time, said Malkit Brach, Sheppard Village Dental’s principal owner. “We thought we would be tired, but we were pumped.” The idea came up at a team meeting, and the resulting vote was unanimous, his wife, Kal Brach, the clinic’s director, said. “I’ve never seen my staff work harder

business than on that day,” she said, explaining they drew inspiration from stories people told them about not being able to afford dental work. “They’ve been in pain six months, nine months, and we’re able to help them in half an hour.” Clinic staff identified the need in the community, and everyone who works at the clinic came together to provide the program. “We believe this is how we show we care because the importance of every person having a healthy mouth is not just for those who can afford it. It’s an essential part of overall health,” Kal said. The Extra Smile program sets aside a day on a weekend when the clinic will provide the free dental services. It is both needed and appreciated by the community as people start lining up as early as 2 a.m. to make sure they will

be seen when the doors open at 9 a.m. “Judging by the incredible response we have had to our two Going The Extra Smile events, there is a great need for accessible dental care,” Kal said. Along with staff, a number of volunteers come out to make sure the Extra Smile program runs smoothly and that everyone gets taken care of on the day it takes place. “An event of this size cannot take place without the dedication of our fantastic volunteers. Each year, we have had over 20 volunteers give their time and energy to ensure that we can offer free dental cleaning, a filling, or an extraction in a positive and upbeat environment,” said Kal. Sheppard Village Dental has been in the McCowan and Sheppard area of Scarborough for 27 years. The clinic started with three staffers, and has since grown to a team of 18.

iblings Hana, Hasna, Sarah and Bilal Syed are 2015 Urban Heroes for inspiring others in Scarborough and around the world through their community work and music. The university students, now between the ages of 18 and 21, have been volunteering since childhood. “Volunteerism has always been something that we’re passionate about,” Hasna said. “And as we’ve grown up doing it, we realized how passionate we are about not only community issues, but global issues as well.” Hana, Hasna and Sarah attend the University of To r o n t o S c a r b o r o u g h (UTSC), while Bilal attends the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa. Together, they started a non-profit group called Global Youth Impact

community that encourages youths to be community leaders. “There’s a lot of young people that are passionate about global issues just like us,” Hasna said. “So we thought why don’t we start our own organization that can empower young people, where we can all get together and make a difference.” They also use music to bring awareness to issues that are important to them, and inspire other people to get involved. Their song Raise our Voices is currently featured in a United Nations campaign against child labour. Champions, a song they wrote for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, where they were official Games ambassadors for the University of Toronto, has earned them lots of recognition as well. The song was featured on television and

radio, and they performed it live at Toronto City Hall and UTSC. Along with volunteering to support local and international causes and organizations, they also organize fundraising events. Right now, they are focused on growing Global Youth Impact. The group’s first chapter is at UTSC. “We’d love to have chapters open throughout the city, throughout the province, throughout the nation and the world,” Hana said. “That’s the ultimate goal, to help empower youth everywhere.” n T h e Community category for the Scarborough Urban Hero Awards was sponsored by McCowan Retirement Residence.

icente Dumael is a 2015 Urban Hero for his extensive community work in Scarborough. An active volunteer and event organizer, he is always willing to help where needed. He is head of his local Knights of Columbus St. Lawrence Council, which has earned awards for outstanding community service and increased membership under his leadership. With his infectious community spirit, he has almost doubled his council’s membership. A dedicated member, volunteer and event organizer at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, he also works in radiology at The Scarborough Hospital. Dumael came to Canada from the Philippines in 2000. Already a Knights of Columbus member, he quickly connected with the church group here. “It is my motivation to work in the church better than doing anything,” he said. “It’s in our blood already, helping in the church is the main thing in our life. My father, when he was alive, he was working in the church, too.” The 48 year old is the eldest of five siblings. His brother and mother live here, while his sisters live in the Philippines. His father died early, leaving him to help support his family. Helping people medically also runs in his family; his wife and sisters

community are nurses, and his uncle also works in radiology. Dumael’s 15-year-old daughter is part of the youth group at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, and his 21-yearold son is also a Knights of Columbus member. Through his church, he helps organize programs at St. Lawrence Catholic School, including basketball free-throw competitions and poster contests. With his Knights of Columbus council, he volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, helping to build homes for families in need, and supports the Special Olympics, organizing fundraising events for the organization.

He founded an annual bowling fundraiser that involves other Knights of Columbus councils, also working with other councils as a member of the Knights of Columbus Toronto East Archdiocese Zone. Al well, he is a leader within the Filipino community, and helps send supplies to people in need in the Philippines. He participates in Scarborough’s annual Canada Day Parade, and chauffeured VIPs as a Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games volunteer. When asked how he finds time to volunteer so often, he said it’s important to him to give back. “It is a good feeling. It’s better to give than to receive.”

School principal helps make learning fun for local children

Volunteer has passion for educating young people

our-decade Scarborough educator Roy Chubb saw a need for quality summer care for children in north Scarborough and responded to it. Chubb, who grew up in Brantford, ON but has lived and worked in Scarborough for nearly 35 years, is president and director of EPIC (Education Professionals in Canada), a fun and educational summer school program for children living near Brimley Road and Finch Avenue and surrounding areas. The program, which runs during July and August from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays with before and after care, launched this past summer at north Scarborough’s Ste. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic Elementary School, where Chubb has served as principal for the last six years. “Parents were having trouble finding high-quality summer care,” he said of what led to the creation of the EPIC program, which in its inaugural year welcomed 69 students. “It was time to give the kids a continued program throughout the summer.” Chubb said EPIC, which is staffed by qualified educators and set to run for a second time in the summer of 2016, is all about providing its participants with higherlevel learning, engaging their creativity, encouraging synthesis of ideas and getting kids to think independently, many of the same areas of focus Chubb worked on in a past role as a teacher with the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s gifted educa-

education tion program. “The goal of the whole program is to be educational but also lots of fun,” he said. “Everybody loved it.” School secretary Leanne Menna was struck by Chubb’s exemplary leadership skills and decided to nominate him for a Scarborough Urban Hero Award. “He’s a fantastic leader within this community and he’s very supportive of his whole entire staff,” said Menna, who has worked at the school for about a year and a half. “Roy has a clear vision for the school community and he taps into his staff’s strengths to work towards common goals.” Menna, who said Chubb’s strong leadership skills are demonstrated through the many strong relationships he’s formed within the community, said the EPIC program is just one of the many examples of why he’s deserving of a Scarborough

Urban Hero Award. Chubb said he was “totally surprised and astonished” to learn he’d been selected for the honour. “I don’t feel that I’ve done anything that any other principal wouldn’t do. All of us are out there doing our best,” he said, adding the students and staff at Ste. Marguerite Bourgeoys are all “very motivating.” Aside from working in the education field, Chubb has also volunteered his time for a number of organizations over the years, including the Down Syndrome Association of Toronto, Community Living Toronto, the Canadian Masters Athletic Association, and Maple Leafs Dreams to name a few. A part-time, not to mention awardwinning, night school instructor at George Brown College, he’s also an avid traveller who has seen most of the world.

ourteen-year Scarborough resident Abdulrahim Goralwalla has dedicated his life’s work to his passion for youth and education. Originally from Kenya, Goralwalla has volunteered his time for the last 10 years as the program administrator for Scarborough’s Fountain of Youth Education Initiative (FYEI), which offers free tutorial classes in math, science and English on Fridays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. to students in grades 1 to 12 at the Islamic Foundation High School on Nugget Avenue. Goralwalla, a trained school teacher who also has a background in sales and marketing, retired a decade ago from his role as the viceprincipal of a private school in Ajax. On Fr i d a y e ve n i n g s, he can be found helping run the Fountain of Youth Education Initiative, which helps between 70 and 90 youth each year. “I organize all of the programs, the teachers and the classes. Anybody who comes through here is most welcome,” said Goralwalla, who lives near Markham Road and Milner Avenue. He said he’s also proud to help the program’s tutors gain real experience in the education field and to see its graduates go on to have brighter futures. “I feel a great satisfaction to do something for others, especially kids. I’m really happy to be a part of it.” Goralwalla also said his volunteer

education work with FYEI keeps him occupied and up to date on the education system in Canada. Majied Ali, a FYEI volunteer, nominated Goralwalla for a Scarborough Urban Hero Award. “Mr. Goralwalla is always ready to give and help,” said Ali, who volunteered with the program for its first two years. “He lives a very fulfilled life. He’s happy and content and loves giving back and helping young people.” A l i , w h o h a s k n ow n Goralwalla for about 14 years, said he’s heard lots of positive feedback about the Fountain of Youth Education Initiative and felt it was important to recognize the great work that goes on behind the scenes. “It merits recognizing. This Urban Hero Award will help keep them motivated to con-

tinue all the great work,” he said, adding a lot of the children and teens who attend the program wouldn’t be able to afford private tutors to help them with their homework. Goralwalla, who thanked his wife, Halima, for her love and support over the years, said he’s honoured to receive a Scarborough Urban Hero Award. “I feel really great that somebody is appreciating my work with youth,” he said. Prior to his involvement with FYEI, Goralwalla served for five years as the chair of Nasserpuria Memon Jamat Canada’s education committee where he organized organizing monthly activities among other things. Goralwalla served as a scout leader organizer and youth lecturer back in east Africa, and is the author of a book to help people who speak his native tongue of Cutchi learn English.

Nurse’s positive attitude inspiring

hen long-time Scarborough resident Katriina Donohue used to look out the window of her condo near McCowan Road and Hwy. 401 all she saw was a sea of white garbage. Today, the Highland Creek Conservation Area that backs onto her property is a much different place than it was when she moved there, thanks to Donohue’s tireless efforts. “It’s beautiful. It really is,” she said. “But it wasn’t always so beautiful.” For the last six years, Donohue has devoted her time, money and effort to cleaning up three decades of garbage accumulation in the local green space, which can be seen from her building near Lee Centre and Corporate drives. “No one helped me. I did it all by myself,” said Donohue, who goes out as often as she can during the warmer months to collect rubbish in

environment large contractors bags. “Over the years, I’ve collected hundreds of bags of garbage. I go out there to work.” Donohue said she blames the mess on people not properly tying up their garbage bags. “Especially around here, it’s important to tie up your garbage bags. Make sure to tie your garbage properly or it will mess up the community,” she said. Donohue’s good friend Ferlin Bartosik said she’s the type of person who doesn’t do things halfway. “Anything she does she really puts her heart into it,” said Bartosik, who nominated Donohue for a Scarborough Urban Hero Award. “(The conservation area) was just a blanket of white garbage and one day she decided to take it on. I don’t know anyone else who would have done that!” Bartosik said he was shocked to see the transformation, all thanks to his friend’s efforts. “It was quite an achievement. When I saw it I couldn’t believe it,” he said, adding people might not realize all of the work that went into making this part of the Highland Creek Conservation Area a beautiful place. “I thought it was extraordinary. It was a huge job.” n The Environment category for the Scarborough Urban Hero Award was sponsored by Foster KIA.

or two decades, Linda Hampson has run programs for the Pinetree Seniors Centre, which now brings older Scarborough residents together for meals, sitting yoga, craft sales and other activities through the Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities. “I don’t add years to my members’ lives, but I add life to their years,” said Hampson, recipient of a Scarborough Urban Hero Award this year in the Health & Science category. Friends say her devotion to seniors goes beyond her job as Pinetree’s co-ordinator, and she is genuinely interested in them as people. “Sh e re a l l y i s interested in how you are,” said George Boorne, a volunteer at Pinetree for years. “I think t h a t ’s w h a t makes her special.” Hampson lived in

health & science Guildwood for many years, and produced special events for the Guild Inn when it still had artists in residence. She was later an activation coordinator for a nursing home nearby that was then called Livingston Lodge. And 24 years ago, at West Hill’s St. Margaret in-thePines Anglican Church, Hampson started art classes for Pinetree. At that time, she recalled, there was no special transportation for the area’s seniors, and no recreation centre space available. “Of course, we had no money, so we relied a lot on volunteers.” Hampson said Pinetree is very welcoming. “They meet, they become friends. And t h a t ’s t h e goal.”

obbette Bennett Waul is an emergency department registered nurse with an infectious laugh. Her job at The Scarborough Hospital’s General campus, she says, requires a thick skin, a variety of skills and a passion for helping people. Nobody wants to wait in an emergency room, adds Waul, and “if I come in with a grumpy face, I’m going to make it just that much worse.” A Scarborough Urban Hero winner in the Health & Science category, she thinks she didn’t exactly choose nursing, it chose her. In a school in Jamaica, where Waul was born, she simply opened a book on colleges and picked nursing as a career. The hectic pace of nursing is hard to get used to. You can see a lot of things in the emergency room at the General, including patients who are there for trauma, mental health, or maternity. “It can get really, really crazy,” said Waul. “It’s never a dull moment, and you got to have a little bit of skills in every area.”

health & science The Whitby woman graduated from nursing school in 2003. She started working in a local nursing home and then switched to emergency nursing and TSH in 2007. In the department, she works in the rapid assessment, resuscitation and the acute areas. She’s starting her training soon for triage, the method where patients are placed in order of how urgently they need to be seen. Waul tries to put anxious people at ease, but she has to tell them priority goes to the person who’s dying, who can’t breathe. The job involves a lot of repetition and reassurances. People get frustrated hearing average wait time is three hours before a doctor will see them. But despite the frustrations of the health care system, Waul is known around the hospital for her sunny demeanour. “People ask, ‘Are you always this happy?’” said Waul. Like other nurses in her department, she said, she can find herself going “above and beyond” to get through the day and make things work. Wa u l i s e x p e r i e n c e d enough to know nursing is not just about skills, that there’s “that human part of it, that therapeutic part.” Colleagues have seen this in her. Caril Phang, another nurse at the General, wrote she will always remember the way Waul placed her hand gently on a confused patient’s shoulder, for reassurance. “Great nurses must be commended,” Phang said.

ince 2012, the Scarborough Gift of Life Association has fought fears, phobias and excuses about registering for organ and tissue donation by sending its members – many of them proof organ donation saves lives – anywhere they are invited. By speaking to strangers about what can be a touchy issue, they’ve managed to help raise one of Ontario’s lowest registration rates by three per cent. “This is what keeps us positive and keeps the thing going,” said Mohan Bissoondial, the group’s coordinator. Supporting the Trillium Gift of Life Network, the association, Scarborough Urban Heroes this year in the Health & Science category, aren’t looking for money. They are there to tell you other people might need your organs – when you don’t need them any longer. Scarborough had one of the lowest organ donation registration rates in Ontario, at nine per cent. Now, after three years in which the group has gone to offices of Service Ontario,

health & science high schools, ribfests and any other special event that would have them, it’s up to 12 per cent. “Wherever we get an opportunity to go, we go,” Bissoondial said as members of the group gathered this month. That improved registration rate is still far below the Ontario average of 27 per cent, or the 18 per cent across Toronto (a number some would say is still low). Members have scratched their heads over this for a long time, Bissoondial said, because there’s no primary research as to why. Is it Scarborough’s multicultural nature? Are there other special reasons why the area or its residents from certain backgrounds might be lagging behind? “It’s not fair to say any ethnic group is one way or the other,” he said, adding the group approaches Scarborough as one big entity. “I think the issue is education.”

He i n s p i r e s f r i e n d s and fellow students at the University of Toronto Scarborough to get involved in sports such as basketball and swimming. “I like the saying, ‘In a sound mind in a sound body.’ I believe it’s essential to keep fit and healthy to maintain a well-balanced life,” said Ganness. He began taking part in sports at the age of three when his mother introduced him to soccer and swimming, both sports he was involved in for many years. Along with playing sports in school, Ganness also played competitive soccer with Scarborough clubs Olympic Flame and Wexford. He was also a member of the Olympian School of Swimming. Also, Ganness took part in other sports including gymnastics, golf, basketball, tennis, and skating. He said the help and inspiration he was given as a youngster by his various coaches, is what he’s also trying to pass on to others. “I was fortunate to have many coaches each teaching me how to improve on my skills, technique and work as a team player,” said Ganness. “Gary No l d e n m y swimming instructor has been with me since I was three years old. sports one special coach who took the time to motivate me to reach my full potential in becoming the best swimmer I could possibly be. It’s because of him I have completed all levels of swimming, obtained my National Lifeguard Certificate at age 16 and enjoy all water sports.” Along with physical fitness and fun, sports are critical in teaching participants how to get along with others working towards a common goal, said Ganness. “I learnt to be a team player,” through sports, he said. “In life you set goals, make changes to suit if they can’t be reached, work hard, stay grounded and always remain positive.” n The Sports category for the Scarborough Urban Hero Awards was sponsored by Canlan Ice Sports.

abriela Estrada has used her passion for and involvement in sports as away to motivate young people to make their lives better. Her Keepmoving TO organization educates young people in areas such as physical literacy, team building and more. She inspires those she works with to be both physically active and to live healthy lifestyles. Estrada comes by her love of sports honestly as her father played national level baseball in Guatemala and got her into the sport at the age of five. However, soccer was the sport Estrada showed a real passion for and she ended up playing for years on a number of different teams locally. She now both referees and coaches soccer. “What really drives my passion with sports and recreation is the diversity within it and how inclusive it can be,” said Estrada. “From organized competitive sport to recreational leagues, from competitive dance to drop-in Zumba classes, to even just walking into the gym for a workout: there’s a place for everyone of every level for essentially every discipline.” Estrada’s Keepmoving TO is a physical literacy program for female youth in east Scarborough. The program’s focus is not elite athletes, but rather on encouraging young people to get active and have some fun. “The world is a huge playground that we often find empty, as more and more youth are, in a sense, addicted to the world of technology and spending more time

sports looking at screens than in the fresh air having fun with friends and family,” explained Estrada. The Keepmoving TO program really began rolling this summer. E s t ra d a w a s a l re a d y involved with athletics at the University of Toronto Scarborough, but was put on an east Scarborough activity committee which helped her make contact with the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club. That relationship led to the development of the program through what was at first a girls club. “It became so much more than a physical literacy project. Some said the city should promote campaigns such as the Yellow Dog Project, a movement in many countries to identify “dogs who need space” with special tags or bandanas. “Some recommended that children under 12 years old should be prohibited from off leash areas unless accompanied by an adult,” the report said. “Others were concerned about the size of dogs and would like to see separate areas for small dogs and big dogs. Most residents answering the survey, some 57 per cent, said they did not know how to report a dog bite when it happens. Most (60 per cent) also want increased fines for owners whose dogs continue to menace or bite, and many (46 per cent) want specialized licences for dogs who have bitten, or a requirement (44 per cent) to post a sign on property warning people about their dog. The report noted while 15 other cities define what a “dangerous”, “menacing,” or “vicious” dog in their bylaws, Toronto does not. Reid said she hopes the public education program at schools will be reinstated, adding current fines and rare patrols by bylaw officers aren’t enough to deter bad behaviours by dog owners.

There are around 230,000 dogs in Toronto – more dogs than there are people in Richmond Hill – and last year those Toronto dogs bit people in 688 incidents. Those are dog attacks serious enough to be reported to the city, which also recorded 248 cases in 2014 of dogs biting domestic animals. The city, which says its “ultimate goal is zero dog bite incidents,” held public consultations on “responsible dog ownership” this year, and staff talked to dog trainers, dog walkers and the Toronto Humane Society. A report going to Toronto Council’s Licensing and Standards Committee on Thursday, Nov. 26, says the city needs more public education about dogs, and bylaws which are easier to understand. “Toronto is a hugely dogloving city,” said Katie Reid, owner of a Leslieville dog training company, KatyK9, who gave advice to the city during the consultation. “I just really hope they get it right.” About 79 per cent of people answering a survey want the city, which recently cut a Toronto Animal Services program for schools on socializing with dogs and bite prevention, to provide more information about dog safety

Half of survey respondents complained about dogs which were “at large.” Reid said the city and its survey consider dogs tethered outside a store to be “at large” too, though she doesn’t think the city can show these pose a threat to the public. Reid, who trains dogs which are under-socialized and fear other dogs, said it’s rare to see a dog that is “full-on” aggressive. There’s always an underlying reason, she said. The city needs to find out more about how dog attacks happen, argued Reid, who said context is important in each case. If a dog is nervous and on a leash, for example, an unleashed dog running after it can make the leashed dog’s instinct to fight or flight kick in, she said, because the leashed dog knows it can’t run. Some owners don’t know how to read dog body language, and can’t see when a situation with a dog may escalate into an attack, said Reid. The report said most dogs will show “warning signs” before they bite. “Stakeholders noted that dogs can bite when they are fearful, in pain, when they are expressing guarding or prey drive or after another human or domestic animal has not respected the dog’s warning signals.”

School boards offer support in wake of Paris attacks TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s Catholic and public school boards has made support resources available to parents, students, principals and teachers in the wake of the recent Paris attacks and continuing international acts of terrorism. Overwhelming global media coverage of events in Paris, Belgium, Syria and Mali informed the response by the Toronto school boards, its spokespersons said. Global news coverage is 24 hours a day, focused not only on police and intelligence investigations into the Nov. 13 co-ordinated attacks claimed by Islamic State in the French capital that killed 130 people, but also on the ensuing bombings by France, Canada, the U.S. and Russia of strategic Islamic State targets in Syria. The Monday after the Paris

attacks, the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s (TCDSB) communications team issued a letter to principals to send home to parents at their discretion. That day, Toronto District School Board (TDSB) outgoing director of education Donna Quan also issued a statement to parents with advice and tips from the board’s support staff. The TCDSB letter noted the terrorist attacks “could cause a heightened sense of insecurity and anxiety in children.” The letter advised, “(T)he goal of parents and the school is to restore the children’s sense of safety and security and increase their sense of power and control.” It further stated the TCDSB is joined together in prayer, with staff “engaged in age appropriate discussions” about the attacks and “watching for signs of fear and stress

in our students.” TCDSB spokesperson John Yan said the board’s focus is on the impact of media coverage on its students, and on reinforcing its longstanding focus on global peace. “The intensity of reporting on this particular tragic event is one of the reasons we wanted to make the letter available to go home,” Yan said. “Our students are as connected as anyone on their phones and computers 24 hours a day.” Catholic board psychologists and social workers are available to offer support where needed, which includes giving advice on appropriate messaging to students. Black Friday kicks off spending frenzy For those who aren’t already standing in line somewhere, or somehow missed the big news, the holiday sale season kicks off this week with Black Friday. While an anemic Canadian dollar may limit the number of people who venture south to take advantage of the frenzy in the U.S., traffic the other way should increase substantially for the same reason. Locals will be participating in huge numbers here. While they’re sure to be in fine buying form, they can be forgiven for taking the promises with a grain of salt. City ready to welcome up to 2,500 Syrian refugees this year: Mayor DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Mayor John Tory has said repeatedly he would not criticize the federal government if it took more time settling Syrian refugees in Canada, and on Tuesday afternoon, federal immigration minister, John McCallum, gave him nothing to complain about. In a televised announcement, McCallum announced the federal government has scaled back its commitment to admit 25,000 refugees from Syria by the end of the year, and will, in fact, only admit 10,000 at that time. The remaining 15,000 will be admitted in January and February. “Canadians want us to do it right and if it takes a little longer to do it right we should take that time,” he said. “In order to do that right and give a welcome that is not just a smile but also a roof over their head, it is better to take that additional time, so

But he said funding must come with the refugees that Toronto will welcome. “The City of Toronto has indicated the resources that are currently within our ability to provide, and I expect that the necessary federal and provincial resources will be deployed to help our city and others like it accommodate these new arrivals and set them up for long-term success in Toronto.”

city’s environmental study reaches Toronto Council. Council, after all, didn’t accept a previous staff recommendation to continue incineration at the plant, voting in 2011 to truck the sewage away instead. Outraged residents near the Beechgrove Drive plant convinced the province and city to order a new environmental study, at a cost of $1 million. This time, reducing the sewage into pellets at a new facility before hauling it away from the plant was considered as a third choice. But though the city had suggested it would, by weighing community, health, environment and cost factors, “identify the best solution” during this phase of the study, none was announced at the final public information session in Highland Creek Nov. 19. More than 100 residents at the local Royal Canadian Legion branch were told all three choices were a big improvement over the plant’s four-decade-old incinerators. Each choice is in use elsewhere in Ontario, and projected effects on health from each of them are “very small,” the city said, except burning the sludge would create more air pollution, and trucking sludge or turning it into pellets would create

more noise and odours. The presentation was “wellreceived” by the mostly pro-incineration audience, said Moeser, adding the judgement of city staff “seems to be heading in the same direction” as it did before the council decided to haul the sludge, sometimes called “beneficial use.” alternative The study and its recommended alternative will likely reach the city’s public works committee in February, and council not long after that. Projected capital costs for each alternative are around the $110-million mark, but maintaining incineration is thought to cost $273 million over 25 years, giving it an edge on an estimated $400 million to manage the haulage, and $295 million for pelletization. Police are investigating after a bag of shotgun shells was found in a Goodwill charity bin in Scarborough. Police were called to the Goodwill at 350 Progress Ave. at 11:47 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24. It is believed the bag of shotgun shells was dropped in the charity bin overnight. “We wish to alert the public that this is an inappropriate and unsafe means to dispose of ammunition,” police said in a news release. People with unwanted ammunition should call police to arrange for a safe disposal.

The retail value of this year’s goods is approximately $167,000. Since the auction started, it has generated more than $2 million. Originally run by the Rotary Club of East York, it became a joint initiative five years ago. Through the Rotary Clubs, the auction proceeds support a long list of local organizations.

The average price per square foot for the condo units is in the low $400s, which is pretty amazing considering the average price per square foot of a new condo unit in the Greater Toronto Area hit a record high in September 2015 of $575 per square foot.

On November 14th, the preview opening of SweetLife by Your Home Developments attracted more than those with a sweet tooth. It piqued the interest of anyone looking for stylish, high quality living at affordable prices. All in a quiet but busy neighbourhood at Morningside and Kingston Road!

The townhomes at SweetLife are all two-bedroom units, ranging from 969 to 1,442 square feet, with prices starting at $421,900. NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Last week’s 0-0 tie in El Salvador not only gave the Canadian national men’s soccer team an important ‘away’ point in World Cup qualifying, it also marked a milestone for Scarborough’s Julian de Guzman. With his 85th appearance in the Nov. 17 game, he became Canada’s most capped player, one more than former record holder Paul Stalteri with 84. “I’m happy to be there 85 times for my country,” he said, in a post-game media scrum. And while he would have loved for Canada to get the win and the full three points for the match, he said the one point on the road “is still good and I could still celebrate in a nice way.” Canada is now undefeated in two games, having won their opening game in the allimportant tournament 1-0 over visiting Honduras Friday, Nov. 13. Mexico leads the home-and-away tournament with two wins; El Salvador has a tie and a loss; and Honduras has two losses. Although 34 and in the twilight of a career that included stints in the top leagues of Germany, Spain and Greece, as well as in Major League Soccer (as a ‘designated player’ for Toronto FC), de Guzman said he’ll keep answering the call – at least for the short term. “I’m definitely honoured and definitely want to play for my country for another year or so – push the caps to maybe 90 or 100, who knows.” At this stage of his career, he is playing with the Ottawa Fury of the North American Soccer League (NASL). Ironically, the Fury made it all the way to the NASL championship game Sunday, Nov. 15 which they lost 3-2 to New York

Cosmos. De Guzman had to miss that game because of his national team commitments, but did play in the Fury’s 2-1 semifinal win over Minnesota United FC Sunday, Nov. 8. A former honours student at Cardinal Newman Catholic school, de Guzman played club soccer for the North Scarborough Soccer Club where he won a provincial Ontario Cup championship. While de Guzman plays on, another one of Canada’s all-time greats from Scarborough, Dwayne De Rosario, also a former TFC star player, is enjoying his first year of retirement, and he passed on his congratulations in a Tweet: “Shout out to my boy #juliandeguzman on achieving most Capped player on #CanadaNationalTeam well deserved & many more games to play!” A former student at Winston Churchill Collegiate, De Rosario, 37, is a Scarborough Walk of Fame inductee. Another player from Scarborough may be coming up the pipes for the Canadian national team. Fraser Aird, who plays for the Glasgowbased Rangers in Scotland, declared for Canada this fall and earned his first cap in a pre-tourney warm-up ‘friendly’ match Oct. 13, which Canada tied 1-1 with African powerhouse Ghana. A 20-year-old former student at Albert Campbell Collegiate, he’s eligible to suit up for Canada in the World Cup qualifying tourney, but did not make the lineup for the first two games. The six-match tourney plays out over an 11-month period, with Canada next in action with a home-and-home series against Mexico, at home March 25 (location yet to be determined) and on the road March 29 at Estadio Azteca.
