Youth shelter slated to close in October MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com

SPORTS Toronto youth soccer action / 17

City councillors in Scarborough are hoping to save the area’s only emergency shelter for youth before it closes next month. In a building behind a Kennedy Road church for nearly 22 years, Second Base Youth Shelter has helped many homeless youth move on to better lives, but directors say it can no longer meet its financial obligations. “We’ve been wrestling with this for over a year,” Sherwin Modeste, the board chairperson, said this week. “The shelter has been an agency in difficulty for quite a while.”

On June 22, the board decided to shut down Second Base by Oct. 20, “unless a viable option to ensure the sustainability of the shelter” could be found in time. A message on the shelter’s website blamed “ongoing cash flow issues,” building maintenance costs and other challenges in running Second Base, adding, “We have decided that the agency is no longer able to offer the type of environment necessary for the well-being of Toronto’s homeless youth.” In an interview, Modeste said the shelter, which receives an operating subsidy from the city, has had a “huge decrease in occupancy” over the last seven years. >>>SECOND, page 14

Teacher takes part in OneWalk to Conquer Cancer JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The start of the new school year is always a bittersweet time for five-year Beach resident Stacy Melbye. As a teacher at Scarborough’s Oak Ridge Junior Public School, Melbye – who grew up near Kingston and Fallingbrook roads – is excited to welcome her students back to class. She’s also painfully reminded at this time of year of her late mother, Debbie Burns, who in September 2012 received word that no other treatment options were available for her sixth bout of brain cancer. Sadly, Melbye’s mom lost her battle with the disease four months later at the age of 54. She died two weeks before

the birth of Melbye’s son, Cole. Six years ago, Melbye along with her good friend Kristy Tarala, whose mom is a breast cancer survivor, decided to form a team and take part in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers, which this year has been rebranded as the OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (PMCC). Since 2010, the team – known as the Sisterhood of the Travelling Boobs, Brains and Bums – has raised more than $120,000 for the cause. This year they are aiming to raise $30,000 towards the cause. “I truly do hope we are making a difference. I think the advancements are really helping people’s lives,” said Melbye. She was only 23 years old and in

her first year of teaching when her mom was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 47. “My mom was so brave and so strong. I think she’d be really proud that we do this every year.” Melbye’s sisters Deanna and Krista as well as their father Mel have all taken part in the event over the years. This year’s Shoppers Drug Mart OneWalk to Conquer Cancer, a oneday 25-kilometre journey throughout the streets of Toronto, is set for this Saturday. Participants can choose where their funds are directed including Discovery Research Fund, breast, gynecology (uterine, cervical and ovarian), lung, colon, rectal and gastrointestinal, endocrine, prostate, testicular, bladder and

genitourinary, head and neck, brain, central nervous system, eye, leukemia, lymphoma, sarcoma, skin cancer, melanoma, and childhood cancers. Funds raised through the event, which since 2003 has raised more than $148 million for personalized cancer medicine, research, treatment and care for women’s cancers at PMCC, support personalized cancer medicine at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The centre enables world-leading clinicians and researchers to detect cancers earlier, diagnose with more precision, target treatment for each patient and support patients and their families.

Potassium iodide pills to be distributed in east Scarborough Pills help protect thyroid in event of nuclear emergency TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Scarborough residents within 10 kilometres of the Pickering Nuclear Plant will soon get potassium iodide (KI) pills in the mail. The KI pills help protect people from thyroid cancer in the unlikely event a nuclear emergency happens. All homes and businesses within 10 kilometres of Pickering’s Ontario Power Generation (OPG) plant will receive them, along with all those near nuclear power plants across Canada. Distribution of KI pills was ordered by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. The pills were previously available free from select pharmacies, but weren’t being picked up. Only seven per cent of local residents collected the KI pills from pharmacies, noted Kevin Powers, director of public affairs for OPG. “We asked why if so many people

know about them, so few have actually picked them up,” said Powers, explaining recent polling showed more than half of people near the Pickering plant knew about the pills. “Those who didn’t have them said it was because of a lack of information, not opposition to it,” he added. “So we explained what KI pills were, and 83 per cent of people said, ‘Well, knowing that, it sounds like they would be important to have.’” Letters to be sent To help nearby residents get them, KI pills will arrive in the mail during the first half of October. Before they arrive, letters will be sent letting people know the pills are coming. The letters, from Toronto and Durham Region’s medical officers of health, will come in gold envelopes bearing the logos of OPG, the City of Toronto and Durham Region, saying important public safety information is inside. “What we want to do is build an understanding and awareness of the purpose behind the distribution, proper uses of the pills, and an understanding of how and when they would be taken,” said Powers.

“Also included in the envelope will be a brochure, and the brochure has a bunch of frequently asked questions, as well as answers to them.” Enough KI pills for five adults, or a two-parent family with six children, will be delivered to each home. Starting in November, larger families requiring more pills can request them from the distribution campaign’s website at www.preparetobesafe.ca Through the website, growing families or new residents can request KI pills as needed in the future. People outside the 10-kilometre distribution range can also request pills through the site. They will still be offered at select pharmacies as well. The website also has more information about the pills, or people can call the City of Toronto at 311 or Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-7970000 to learn more. The KI pills, which have a shelflife of 12 years, will be delivered to approximately 100,000 Scarborough homes and businesses. To help protect against thyroid cancer, they fill the thyroid with potassium iodide to reduce the amount of radioactive iodide that can be absorbed. In smaller doses,

potassium iodide is an important part of the human diet, helping to maintain healthy thyroid function. It is sometimes used as a therapeutic supplement, but therapeutic pills contain much less KI than pills meant for use in nuclear emergencies. In the event a serious nuclear accident happens and radioactive gas is released, people would be notified in various ways. Radio, television, Internet, social media and automated phone calls would be used to tell people a situation is unfolding. Within three kilometres of the Pickering plant, sirens would also sound. Stay calm If alerted, people should stay calm, go inside and listen to local television and radio reports for direction, including whether to stay put, evacuate or report to a reception centre, and when and if KI pills should be taken. People should not take KI pills, or go outside, unless told to do so by government officials. “It would take about 72 hours for any emergency to unfold,” said Powers.

“You would be alerted right at the beginning that something’s going on, and then what you’re supposed to do is go inside and listen to instructions from media. Among those instructions may be, at some point, ‘OK, now it’s time to take a KI pill.’ That could be two days, three days, after the first siren has gone off, and you could be evacuated instead; so this is just one of several strategies.” The Pickering Nuclear Plant is set to shut down in 2020, after which Scarborough residents won’t need KI pills on hand. A plan to retrieve the pills will be put in place at that time. The pill distribution shouldn’t alarm residents, said Powers, adding it doesn’t mean a nuclear emergency is more likely to happen, and OPG plants have many defences to protect the public should an unlikely problem occur. “This is being sent out, because of increased safety standards across Canada,” he said. “It doesn’t mean that our plants are operating less safely. They’re, in fact, operating more safely than they ever have before.”

oronto marks an important milestone Sunday with celebrations to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Toronto City Hall. The two half-circle towers, with the council chamber pod in the middle, that dominates Nathan Phillips Square is an iconic symbol of the city not just for residents but for people around the world. It’s one of the great things about Toronto that should make us proud. To celebrate this Sunday, there will be a free event from noon to 5 p.m. featuring entertainment by the Jordan John Band and a performance by STOMP dance competition finalists. Also taking the stage will be a group called the Clamshell Quintet, which is made up of four city councillors and a deputy city manager. Master builders from LEGO will be on hand to help residents build a replica of our view City Hall and the surrounding area. Inside, there will be photoIt’s one of the graphs, architectural models and of the original furnishings great things some specifically designed for the buildabout Toronto ing. As was shown during this summer’s Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, the building and Nathan Phillips Square are an important gathering place for all residents. Whether it’s hosting special celebrations, New Year’s Eve parties, or serving as a nice place to sit and have lunch in the summer or go for a skate in the winter, the area is always busy and reflective of life in the city. It also serves as an historical reminder of pre-amalgamation Toronto as its formation coincided in many ways with the creation of Metropolitan Toronto in the late 1950s. An open competition was started in 1957 to design the new city hall, and the eventual winner was Finnish architect Viljo Revell. Ground was broken in 1961 by then City of Toronto mayor Nathan Phillips. It officially opened on Sept. 13, 1965. Along with celebrating a community gathering spot and a uniquely designed building, residents can also use this month to find out more about how Toronto City Hall came to be and how the city has developed over the past 50 years. Free lectures on that very subject are set for today and Sept. 24 in the council chambers starting at 7 p.m. For more on the celebrations, go to www.toronto. ca/cityhall50th

Dog parks are for pups, not picnickers To the editor: I have an issue with people using the leash-free area at dog parks for picnics. This, in itself, is not upsetting except that the dogs all congregate where the food is and often make nuisances of themselves. In addition, many of the picnickers, being kindhearted, will give food and bones to the dogs, not realizing that cooked bones (especially chicken bones) can splinter and cause severe internal damage in the digestive system. In some cases, dogs are on special diets and should not eat the bits they are offered, but being dogs, will eat them anyway. In my case, I prefer that mine not get into the habit of accepting food from strangers. It is a constant battle trying to get them away from the picnics and back to playing. Lucie Karpinec

Scarborough street renamed in memory of Rouge Valley defender Elaine Lennox Scarborough’s Porcupine Place will soon be Porcupine Place no longer. The short street near the Rouge River should bear the name Elaine Lennox Court instead, Scarborough councillors say. Lennox, a director of a local ratepayer association for two

decades, paid for softball team uniforms and raised money for other recreation projects in her area. She recently died, but on Tuesday her husband Murray watched members of Scarborough Community Council arrange for the posthumous name change, which

was supported by Glen Rouge Homes. Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser said he moved a motion to change the culde-sac’s prickly name “with a great deal of pleasure,” noting Lennox helped in the fight to save the Rouge Valley from development.

Scarborough-Rouge Park candidate Bance dropped by Conservatives The Conservative Party ousted two Toronto candidates over the long weekend, one after he was was shown on videotape urinating in a mug while he was on a contract call as a repairman and another for crank phone calls. Scarborough-Rouge Park candidate Jerry Bance was officially dropped as the candidate by the Conservatives on Monday. Bance had previously run for the Conservatives in east Scarborough in 2008 and 2006 federal elections and lost both times. He owns an appliance repair company called XPress Appliance Service, according to the CBC, whose Marketplace show exposed the urination incident. In an email to the Toronto Star on Monday, Bance said he was “truly sorry” and that he had resigned from the campaign Monday morning. He cited health reasons for the 2012 incident.

“A 30-second decision made three years ago can really change one’s life. I had a health situation and needed to make an emergency decision, ironically to save myself from embarrassment back then,” he said. “It was a lapse in judgment, which I deeply regret today.” Urination incident When the urination was originally broadcast in a March 2012 episode of Marketplace, the CBC did not identify him either as a past candidate or by his last name. It wasn’t till Sunday that CBC finally identified him, reporting that Bance had been caught on a hidden camera while on a call to a home to repair a sink. He was videotaped urinating in a mug and emptying it down the sink drain. The CBC did not disclose

Bance’s surname in its original broadcast in 2012. However, when confronted with the CBC story Sunday, Bance did not dispute the broadcaster’s allegation, Conservative Party officials said. Also, Tim Dutaud, the Conservative candidate for Toronto–Danforth, was dismissed Monday morning after the party determined that reports on social media about his pranks were accurate. Dutaud’s LinkedIn profile states he worked at CBC television in “production” from 1995 to 2001, then as a radio host with “score media group” for nine years. His online profile says he was a real estate sales agent from 2013 to now and became the Conservative candidate for Toronto-Danforth last February. He could not be reached for comment.

t has been a quiet summer at Toronto City Hall – the kind of quiet summers we’re going to have to get used to in the years after Rob Ford’s pyrotechnic mayoralty. If it weren’t for the pyrotechnics of the federal election, indeed, we might as well all have run off to cottages and patios for August and tried to get our heads around city government again. Lucky for us there’s every indication this fall legislative session will be much like the old session. Council will be fine-tuning, reviewing and in some cases re-debating issues that have already had their day in the sun in this latest term. There will be a refined design to the Gardiner “hybrid” reconstruction that council narrowly approved in concept earlier this year. In case anyone had wearied of Councillor Jim Karygiannis’ bloviations on the Uber ride sharing

david nickle the city service during the Pan Am Games, take heart: council will be looking at a regulatory regime that will bring the popular service under something resembling control. There will be a Scarborough subway debate, perhaps, along with a serious talk about Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack proposal that will for a span align almost directly with the new Scarborough subway. If I were to place odds, I would say it’s unlikely council will move off course on either plan. But if you were done feeling unsteady about spending all that money on such a small piece of transit, you might want to break out the smelling salts this fall. There will be smaller fights, too. Later this month, the allies of the Muzik nightclub at Exhibition

Place will be squaring off to deal with the Toronto and East York Community Council’s move this week to have city staff try and get the liquor license removed from the nightclub, in the wake of the deadly shootings there this summer. Add to that labour negotiations with the city’s unionized workers and a budget debate that will once again have to accommodate both Tory’s costly service improvement agendas and his imperative to keep tax increases at or below the rate of inflation – and it’s going to be a full agenda for the next few months. It is worth noting what a recursive cycle we find ourselves living. It might not be a bad thing: government is a long game, and under a serious-minded regime it can become a trifle grinding. But grinding away often creates good, smooth things. Here’s hoping it’s so.

Iconic Toronto City Hall celebrates 50 years DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

Over the past 50 years, Toronto City Hall has played many roles. It’s been in the background on not one but two Star Trek series; it’s been nuked as a stand-in for the zombieinfested Raccoon City in Resident Evil: Apocalypse; and in its strangest media turn, it was central to the internationally televised tragicomedy of former mayor Rob Ford’s term of office. But to begin with, the iconic structure of two curving towers clasping a council chamber that resembles nothing so much as a 1950s-era flying saucer, had a simpler role: the futuristic and hopeful new seat of government for the old City of Toronto. It was something that Toronto’s civic leaders had meant to do since 1943, but in typical Toronto fashion, they dithered and equivocated for more than a decade until then-mayor Nathan Phillips took the reins and called for an international design competition. It wasn’t until September 1965, that the finished building – designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell – opened its doors onto the civic square named after Phillips, as the brand

only seat of government for the newly amalgamated City of Toronto. In the late 1990s, that meant a lot of careful work on a building that is also a heritage structure. Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser was put in charge of managing the $4.8-million renovation that turned the council chambers from a space for 15 city councillors and a few city staff to one that would accommodate a council that was initially 57 members strong. “That was one of the challenges – how do we design the council chamber and keep the heritage and you know, make it something that we can all be proud of,” recalled Moeser. “I spent a lot of time with it, with the architects and so forth. The devil was in the details.” The building had and still has its quirks that had to be dealt with. The council chambers were famously accessed only by two glacially slow hydraulic elevators, and exits to the roof. Briefly, there had been plans to remove the large wall between the public chambers and the members’ lounge, but Moeser confirmed the apparently free-standing wall served as a counterbalance to prevent the entire saucer from tipping

Toronto City Hall officially opened on Sept. 13, 1965. A 50th birthday celebration is set for this Sunday.

new Toronto City Hall. This weekend, that new city hall celebrates its 50th birthday, and it’s doing it in style. Literally. Mayor John Tory, who moved office into the building less than a year ago, remains struck by city hall’s iconic style. “From the standpoint of external recognition, it is one of our most iconic buildings,” he said. “Internally

– I think while there are johnny-comelatelies like Yonge-Dundas Square, Mel Lastman Square – it’s the great public space.” The building is so iconic that it’s been a staple not just in movies and television, souvenirs and logos, but in spite of its obvious challenges, it alone all of the civic centres from the former Metropolitan Toronto municipalities was the obvious and

off the single pillar that supports it. In the end, the council chamber maintained its old-school charm – remembered well by councillors like Parkdale-High Park’s Gord Perks, who began his political life as an activist. “I have so many memories of being here. I can remember being 22 years old and holding an activist thing up in the council chamber. I used to make deputations up there,” he said. “I can remember Citizens for Local Democracy holding meetings up there. Launching Kathleen Wynne’s political career.” Tory said city hall should be an inspiration to city builders in the future. “It’s a symbol of something we should do more of which is do things that are bold,” he said. “Although I don’t think it’s bold to have an architectural competition, and maybe we should do more of that. It’s 50 years of age, it looks very striking and contemporary, which is an interesting commentary on what you get when you have these competitions.”

Second Base to close doors >>>from page 1 Youth are arriving at the shelter but are not staying on as residents, and the city’s funds are based on bed occupancy, he said. “Youth are more attracted to the downtown area,” Modeste explained, adding a $500,000 mortgage on the building, and rising heating and electricity costs have made the situation worse. Youth at the shelter – there are 43 or 44 on most nights – were told July 8 it was closing, and took it hard, but shelter staff have done all it can to place them in apartments, supportive housing or elsewhere, said Modeste. The city and the United Way have “bailed out” Second Base in the past, and the church to which it pays rent has forgiven debts “on a few occasions,” he said. Modeste, however, said though some other groups did express interest in taking over the shelter, no politician has suggested a plan to save it. “To date, no one has come to us and said, ‘Can we help?’”

Michelle Berardinetti, the local councillor, was out of town, but Michael Giles, her executive assistant, said for about 18 months, she and city staff have tried to assist them in any way possible. “It was never suggested to us that the shelter was going to close,” Giles added Tuesday, when the news was widely circulated in media reports. “In the end, the board did make this decision.” Besides the shelter, Second Base – whose 13 permanent employees also stand to lose their jobs – runs a drop-in and referral centre for youth, and has also run a high-school equivalency program serving both shelter residents and community youth. The city is working with shelter staff and residents to find appropriate placements for youth now at Second Base, including transitional and permanent housing, said Sonia Zyvatkauskas, a spokesperson for Toronto’s Shelter, Support and Housing Administration. A request for expression of

interest will be released this fall to find a replacement for Second Base, she added. At one point, Modeste suggested the shelter might still be saved if it was able to get $150,000 more a year in funds. “I think something like that would be able to help,” he said, adding he would discuss the possibilities in a conference call with board members that evening. Other Scarborough councillors pledged to try to save the shelter, if that can still be done. “I don’t think you should expect these kids to go downtown,” Paul Ainslie of Scarborough East said on Tuesday. “We need to find a way to keep it open, even at a reduced capacity.” Gary Crawford, the city’s budget chief, said with so many residents the shelter should be viable. “I don’t know why it’s not,” he said.

The city says anyone needing emergency shelter should call 311 or 416-368-4766.

on tap for TTC service wimprovements With September in full swing, the TTC has finally unveiled the first round of $95 million in service improvements. Thirty-seven bus routes, many of them in suburban areas, will see an overall uptick in all-day service, restoring levels to what they were before sweeping budget cuts dating back to 2012. Thirty-nine bus and streetcar routes as well as subway service will now provide all-day, frequent service. The Blue Night network that operates once the subway closes at 2 a.m. also has expanded service. The improvements could come at a cost to riders. It’s practically assured the TTC will hike transit fares for 2016 partially to off-set the added expense of running the new service. rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT has signed a deal with a Canadian insurance company to provide coverage for its drivers. While not much is known about the agreement, Intact Financial Corp will soon offer policies for Uber drivers under its belairdirect brand. The agreement also comes in advance of anticipated stricter regulations for rideshares which will likely come up for debate in city council. Uber does cover passengers and drivers in certain situations for up to $5 million, but according to media reports, at least one former driver was planning to sue the company after his insurance claim was rejected following a major collision. TTC HOSTS Sept. 16 FORUM wACCESSIBILITY

The TTC will hold its eighth annual forum for accessibility next week. The event allows riders with accessibility issues to connect in public or one-

on-one with TTC staff and senior executives, as well as members of the transit commission’s accessibility advisory committee. This year’s forum takes place Wednesday, Sept. 16 at the Allstream Centre inside the Exhibition Place grounds starting at 6 p.m. The TTC will operate an accessible shuttle bus service leaving Bathurst Station starting at 5 p.m.

Now, residents in the three pilot areas – Ward 33, the neighbourhoods of Oakridge in Ward 35 and Rustic in Ward 12 – will choose which projects they want to have built by the City of Toronto. As much as $150,000 will be allocated for capital projects in each of the three areas. Residents aged 14 and older

who live in the pilot areas are encouraged to help choose the proposals that will receive funding by casting their votes at specific times and places. To be considered as part of the PB pilot, project ideas needed to be fundable through the city’s capital budget, be located on cityowned property, benefit the public, and have a long-term impact. Beyond that, the community could propose anything it considered a priority for the neighbourhood. Voting dates are: w Ward 35 - Oakridge Community Centre, 63 Pharmacy Ave., Saturday, Sept. 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

w Ward 12 - Gracefield Public School, 177 Gracefield Ave., Sept. 16, 3:30 to 7 p.m.; and Falstaff Community Centre, 50 Falstaff Ave., Sept. 19, noon to 6 p.m. w Ward 33 - Parkway Forest Community Centre, 55 Forest Manor Dr., Sept. 17, 2 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Pleasantview Community Centre, 545 Van Horne Ave., Sept. 17, 2 to 8 p.m. and Sept. 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Fairview Public Library, 35 Fairview Mall Dr., Thursday, Sept. 17, 2 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The safety of you and your family is the top priority of the chemical plants in your neighbourhood. This is why as members of Toronto East CAER we regularly test the community Siren System. In the unlikely event of an emergency, we will alert you to the risk by the activation of the Community Siren. Knowing what to do when you hear the siren will enable you to keep you and your family safe. When you hear the siren you must Shelter In Place: 1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

Go inside. Close all doors, windows and openings. Shut off ventilation systems that draw outdoor air inside (fans, air conditioning units, clothes driers, furnace and close fireplace dampers). Turn on local radio and TV. Check social media and wait for further instructions. Keep phone lines free.

Unless advised to do so by authorities: DO NOT evacuate or travel. DO NOT bring home children from school, or other family members from work. Know that they are also Sheltering In Place. When you have been advised of an ALL CLEAR, return all house settings to normal use. For the purposes of the siren test, the alert signal (whoop, whoop tone) will be sounded for 2 minutes. Following 5 minutes of silence, the all clear signal (monotone sound) will be sounded for 1 minute.

Next Community Siren Test: Monday, September 14, 2015 10 a.m. to noon

Toronto Fire Services will be participating in this live drill and responding accordingly. Lights and sirens will be visible and heard by the neighbouring community. For more information, please call the Community Information Line at (416) 287-4483.

Local businesses now have a powerful tool to connect them to shoppers who are planning to buy their products. On behalf of Metroland Media and your community newspaper, Pulse Research has surveyed our readers and collected in-depth information about what shoppers are planning to buy in the next 12 months. John Marling, founder of Pulse Research, described Pulse of Metroland as a prospecting tool that “gives the advertising department a direct barometer of the advertising needs of businesses. This tells you what your readers are going to buy and they’re going to be buying it locally.” The purchasing intentions of Metroland readers were collected through a Pulse survey in July and compiled in August. And while Marling noted many surveys, such as federal election polls, pull data from a sampling of between 800 and 1,600 people, more than 4,300 of our readers completed the

40-minute online survey, providing an extremely reliable sampling. The data gleaned from 4,357 respondents applies to 516 business categories “from plumbers to financial planners,” he said. Details The results offer interesting details about Metroland readers: w 3.2% plan to have laser eye surgery w 5.6% say they will go to an audiology clinic w 10.5% need an electrician w 16.9% are planning to call a handyman w 42.3% say they will shop in a bookstore w 24.9% say they will start using or will change their auto insurance provider w 13.5% plan to have shoes repaired w 8.7% need a tune-up or repair for a bicycle w 4.9% are planning to buy a bed for their dog Ia n Pro u d f o o t , p u b -

lisher and vice-president of Metroland Media in Toronto, York, Simcoe and Muskoka, is thrilled to support local businesses through this new corporate initiative. “This is extremely valuable information for our local business owners who rely on us to reach their customers, our readers,” Proudfoot said. “Knowing how many people in the market are ready and willing to spend money locally gives us the knowledge to guide our advertisers in the right direction. It really is a win-win situation for local businesses and local shoppers.” Pulse of Metroland offers very detailed information to businesses in each category. For example, those readers planning to shop at a furniture store in the next 12 months indicated what they were intending to buy – living room furniture, a new mattress, an area rug or other items.

Mayor sponsoring family through Lifeline Syria DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

Mayor John Tory is urging Torontonians to follow his example and find ways to help Syrian refugee families settle in Canada and Toronto. “I want to say to the people of Toronto, to say every one of us can be of some help in this, whether through a faith group, through a neighbourhood group, whether it’s just through a group of friends making sure we can take this terrible crisis in which people find themselves, to be as blessed as we are to come to this country,” said Tory in front of reporters Friday

morning. Tory and a group of friends have banded together to sponsor a family of Syrian refugees through the Torontobased Lifeline Syria. The nonprofit group is working to help Syrian refugees settle in the Greater Toronto Area, aiming to assist 1,000 in doing so in the next few years. The sponsorship of a single family costs $27,000, as well as a commitment to provide personal and emotional support. For Tory’s friends, that means chipping in to cover the cash, and providing other assistance as well. Tory said that one member of the group has donated a suite of furniture that will be held in storage until the family arrives, likely in early 2016. The group came together just days before pictures were published of the body of a Syrian toddler, Alan Kurdi,

that had washed ashore in Turkey. His family was attempting to escape the terrorist Islamic State. The photograph has galvanized an international response to the growing crisis in Europe and worldwide, of so far more than four million refugees fleeing their homeland seeking safe harbour. Seeing the image “broke my heart,” Tory said. “I am a father and a grandfather…and to see a little boy…it doesn’t matter whether a little boy or a girl, or a child of any age, a human being…in a situation where they’ve washed up on the shore trying to seek refuge from catastrophe that we can’t imagine…it broke my heart,” he said. “These are human beings.”

Welcome back to the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre The thousands of international athletes have returned to their respective countries. The lights have dimmed. The pageantry has ended. The Games are over. Now, the legacy begins. Welcome back to Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre (TPASC). On September 14, 2015, the doors of TPASC – your world-class venue – will open once again to the thousands of community users, University of Toronto students, faculty and staff, training high performance athletes, and TPASC fitness members. After a summer in which hundreds of fitness members enjoyed the alternate workout space at the Summer Fitness Dome (also known as Tam Heather Tennis and Curling Club), the focus returns to more than 320,000 square feet of sport and recreation space designed to help everyone achieve their health and wellness goals. “Hosting seven events during the 2015 Toronto Pan Am and Parapan Am Games was a tremendous privilege for our entire community and staff within TPASC. While the athletes competed, not only were we hosting

the world, our team was preparing to welcome back our key stakeholders,” said Robert Singleton, managing director, Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre Inc. “The staff at TPASC is so excited to return to legacy mode and service the thousands of patrons who utilize the programs and services available within our venue.” Back by popular demand, TPASC will be hosting a Welcome Back Open House on Sunday, September 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Geared toward family fun and learning new fitness programming, the complimentary

event will feature a day full of exercise classes and recreational sports in addition to raffles and prizes. The community is encouraged to experience TPASC fitness programs at no charge until September 30, 2015. Users must register at the Information Desk. Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre is open 5 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week with modified hours during statutory holidays. CNE sees big jump in attendance The numbers are in and i t ’s l o o k i n g g o o d f o r the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). Early estimates released Tuesday show attendance was up 10 per cent over last year’s 1.43 million visitors, making it one of the most successful runs in the past decade. “The CNE remains one of the most value-packed entertainment events in the city, and people are recognizing this and responding positively,” said CNE general manager Virginia Ludy in a

press release. “Combined with great weather and accessibility by transit to our grounds, visitors near and far have come out to enjoy the fair. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has helped make the 2015 CNE a great success.” Although the final official tally will not be released for another few weeks, organizers said they are confident the 2015 CNE will be one of the highest attended since 2004. The 18-day run of the

CNE, which concluded Monday, had a handful of new shows including the Lumberjack Show, parkour demonstrations, a Craft Beer Tent and an extreme Pogo Show. Returning favourites were the Food Truck Frenzy, the 66th annual International Air Show and SuperDogs. New foods were also introduced including Frosted Flakes battered chicken, chicken waffle on a stick, poutine Timbits and the S&M (spaghetti and meatball) burger.

Former Birchmount C.I. runners pace Canada to world relay bronze For once a lane disqualification went Canada’s way as its 4x100m relay team – with two Toronto east enders on board – earned a bronze medal at the world track and field championships Saturday in Beijing. In fact, both Toronto east enders, Aaron Brown and Justyn Warner, went to the same east-end school – Birchmount Park Collegiate, although at different times. They were joined on the bronze medal-winning team by Canadian sprint sensation Andre De Grasse of Markham, who also took bronze in the 100-metre sprint event, and Brendon Rodney of Brampton. “It’s great to bring back medals with Andre to Canada and to the USC Trojans,” said

Brown, in an interview on the Athletics Canada website. He was referring to the fact that both himself and De Grasse in addition to wearing Canada’s colours also attend the same U.S. college – University of Southern California. U of T baseball home opener on Sunday in Scarborough As exciting as the Toronto Blue Jays are these days, they’re not quite the only option for east end Toronto residents. Post secondary sports have started up with a couple of Toronto baseball teams setting up home in the city’s east end – Ryerson University at Talbot Park in Leaside (635 Eglinton Ave. E, just east of Bayview Avenue) and the University of Toronto at Dan Lang Field at its Scarborough campus bounded by Morningside, Ellesmere and Military Trail. And, no, we haven’t forgot about York University; but they are playing their home games out of Stuart Burnett Park in Aurora. Unlike the Blue Jays who are on the road this weekend with an exciting series lined up against the New York Yankees, the university teams both have home games. Ryerson hosts a pair of double-headers at Talbot

Park, with McMaster in for the season and home opener Saturday, Sept. 12 and York University in for an all-Toronto showdown on Sunday. Game times are noon and 3 p.m. The University of Toronto, meanwhile, is on the road for a Saturday double header at Waterloo and then on Sunday hosts its home opener at Dan Lang Field with a double header against Laurier, game times noon and 3 p.m. Ontario colleges have also started up their sports seasons, including men’s baseball (Humber, George Brown and Seneca) and women’s softball (Humber and Seneca). Run for Fun slated wScarborough

Residents can walk, roll or run “so kids can play” on Saturday, Sept. 19. Sending people through the lush scenery of Morningside Park, the East Scarborough Run for Fun also highlights the community’s “partnership” with University of Toronto Scarborough. The event ends with a barbecue on the UTSC campus on Old Kingston Road, and UTSC Principal Bruce Kidd will accompany runners himself. The event begins at 10 a.m. at the East Scarborough Storefront, 4040 Lawrence Avenue East, where people can register. Run for Fun aims to raise money for sports and recreation for children and youth in the Kingston-Galloway-Orton Park and Mornelle Court neighbourhoods.
