Mayor helps clean up local graffiti
Funds raised for Ride to Conquer Cancer
DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Mayor Rob Ford wasn’t afraid to get his jacket dirty – or at least dabbed with paint – when he went to Scarborough yesterday to help clean up graffiti from the side of a Pizza Pizza franchise at Victoria Park Avenue and Kingston Road. “Today we are announcing another project that will enhance Kingston Road and at the same time remove graffiti vandalism,” said Ford, standing alongside Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford at the side of the pizza franchise, its wall covered in spray painted tags. “Everybody’s had enough of graffiti. We’re fighting back – going to remove this graffiti and put up a beautiful mural.” The mural artist, who would only identify himself as Al, told The Scarborough Mirror that he’s been painting murals on the sides of buildings mostly along Queen Street. The Pizza Pizza mural will feature an octopus, and cats. Crawford said the mural would act as a real deterrent to graffiti, on a corner that has dealt with it for years.
A Scarborough car dealership has the wheels in motion to raise money for a cure for cancer. Employees of Hogan Chevrolet Buick GMC will cycle to Niagara Falls on June 8 and 9 with the aim of raising more than $30,000. This Sunday, the cyclists will take part in a spin-a-thon at the Scarborough Town Centre. “We’re having three of our stationary bikes there, and three riders every hour will be rotating between the hours of 11 (a.m.) and 6 (p.m.),” said team captain Sarah Chin, adding the public can “check us out” and support the cause.

Mayor Rob Ford paints over grafitti on a wall at Kingston Road and Victoria Park yesterday to make room for a mural as part of Clean Toronto.
“What’s going to happen here with this mural is the best way to combat graffiti, by putting up beautiful art,” said Crawford. “That’ll deter the tagging. This started several months ago when I sat down with the property owner over concerns about graffiti. This corner has been plagued with graffiti for
several years and they have spent thousands of dollars and countless hours cleaning it.” Ford and Crawford then took up paint rollers, to cover up the graffiti on the wall so that Al could get to work. It all went well – until Ford splattered himself with a small amount of paint, on the lapel
of his black suit jacket. Ford shrugged it off. Earlier in the week, the mayor got international tabloid attention when he ran into a TV camera while hurrying away from a media scrum, uttering an expletive. Yesterday, after ABC talk show host Jimmy Kimmel made light of the video of the
incident. Ford told reporters he hadn’t seen it. “I can laugh at it now but I knew it wasn’t funny at the time,” he said. “I knew I would take my lumps – but not, you know, literally.”

Shopping spree draw Those who drop by can also enter a draw for a $500 shopping spree at the mall. Chin said her team, consisting of 10 dealership employees and two friends, has been training for the twoday 200-kilometre bike ride since January. “We’re very excited. We’ve been training really, really hard.” Chin, a manager at the dealership, noted this is the first year she and her team members have participated in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer event. In a busy world, a potential volunteer makes a mental assessment of “what’s in it for me” before choosing where to volunteer. Family. Work. Commute times. Relaxation. Health. These masters must all be served before one can expect a volunteer for even the worthiest of causes. So, community organizations, here’s your challenge: Paint a picture of what the volunteer’s role and experience might look like. The brand name of a charity isn’t enough anymore to ensure the right number of proven and capable volunteers knock on the door. There’s great competition for the time of a community member and organizations looking for volunteers must make the experience our view memorable, fulfilling and worth the organization and the Organizations both individual’s time. Serving the brand name of can improve a specific charity isn’t enough recruitment anymore to recruit capable and willing volunteers. Painting a picture of the volunteer experience can be the best tool of enticement by an organization asking for a person’s time. Engage your volunteer base. It doesn’t need to be complicated. But it can pay enormous dividends. Focussing on the volunteer experience can take many forms. There’s flexible scheduling, ongoing training opportunities, and making an effort to tap into diverse skill sets to bring the most to an organization. In addition to engaging an existing volunteer base, these actions help with future volunteer recruitment. Potential volunteers are more likely to choose and stay with organizations that provide a more personally fulfilling volunteer experience. Organizations of all sizes must be aware of this. An organization active in a community needs community ownership to survive. Having a productive volunteer experience as a priority, from the recruitment stage onward, ensures this – and that the community is ultimately getting what it needs. National Volunteer Week is not only about thanking volunteers for a job well done. It’s about preparing them for the jobs that remain to be done. An engaged, energetic and growing volunteer base is a mutually beneficial outcome for the volunteer and the organization.

Island airport expansion plan far from simple
A
t first the story seemed to be nothing but good news. Porter Airlines, having bucked the industry trend by becoming profitable, announced the purchase of up to 30 new jets from Bombardier. For the supplier, airline and Canadian economy, the purchase is worth well over $2 billion, plus thousands of jobs. For the travelling public, the new aircraft mean nonstop travel to further destinations, maybe at lower cost. So far, controversy has centred on the new jets needing runways longer than those now existing at Porter’s home base at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. Runway expansion requires agreement among the federal Crown corporation that owns the airport called the Toronto Port Authority, Transport Canada, and city council. From the point of view
david soknacki beyond the headlines of airline executives, and nearly half of Torontonians in a recent poll, there ought to be no objection to changing that tripartite agreement and allowing the new jets. It’s not that simple. Making room for those new aircraft assumes that the island airport is operating under capacity. But as executives from Porter’s competitors are eager to point out, that airport is a public asset to which they too want additional access. If the agreement is opened up for a bit of runway it will be very difficult not to reconsider other rules to enhance competition, including allowing other types of jets, more time for takeoffs and landings, plus additional access to airport infrastructure. Changes made in the
agreement also mean increases in security and baggage handling, plus provisions for new employees and thousands of additional travellers. So far these changes might be all contained within the airport, and paid by those who use the service. But once travellers and airport employees reach the mainland, they face chaos. At times the shuttle buses, parking and transit on the Port Authority’s tiny parcel of land cannot cope. Given that there is no realistic ability to expand on the mainland, the assumption seems to be that someone else – meaning you and I, dear reader – will pay for public infrastructure necessary to alleviate the congestion. Significant investment in transit is not planned, since Metrolinx is heavily committed to linking Union Station and Pearson. Earlier decisions to keep Toronto’s airport open
struck what the wider public saw as a reasonable balance of interests. The result was success: a viable airport, a profitable commuter airline, and a service seen as positive by the majority of Torontonians. Their business model succeeded within the existing level of public infrastructure. The upcoming set of decisions to allow expansion is different. At present the proposal primarily benefits one airline, while restricting competitors from a public asset. Should the proposal wish to move ahead, the public will need to be satisfied that space at the airport can be fairly allocated, that expansion can be accommodated, and there is a clear understanding of the full costs of the expansion. There’s still a long way to go.

Film honours family’s monarch butterfly research MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com People in the neighbourhood once called the house “butterfly central,” but now it’s empty and slated for demolition. Fred and Norah Urquhart grew thousands of monarch butterflies from eggs and released them from their Highland Creek home, part of a decades-long quest to find out where the insects disappeared to in winter. A new Imax film playing at the Ontario Science Centre, Flight of the Butterflies, contains the story of how the Urquharts uncovered a major scientific mystery and made Scarborough the centre of a continent-wide effort to understand butterfly migration. Guests at the 45-minute film’s premiere last week included Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Gordon Pinsent, who portrays Fred Urquhart in the film. Fred Urquhart was an entomologist at the University of
Scarborough in 1947 and once had two acres by their home where Norah grew vegetables, kept chickens and had a golden brown horse “she treated almost like a pet dog,” Don Davis, a longtime friend and butterfly tagger told this newspaper after Norah died.

Toronto Scarborough, then called Scarborough College. In the 1950s, he started tag ging monarchs, asking strangers who found the orange and black butterflies to send them to the zoology department at the U of T. Eventually thousands of
volunteer naturalists joined the effort to track the migration, which lasts through generations of monarchs. In 1975, naturalists Ken and Catalina (Cathy) Brugger found one of the monarch’s overwintering sites. The Urquharts saw this high-altitude refuge in the
Mexican state of Michoacan the following year, shortly before Fred retired. Urquhart also helped to found the Federation of Ontario Naturalists (now Ontario Nature) and both he and Nora received the Order of Canada. Both lived to be 90; Fred died in 2002, Norah in 2009. Their house on Military Trail by the foot of Gladys Road still stands, for now. In January, Scarborough councillors approved its demolition because it was one of a half-dozen vacant homes attracting vandals and scavengers. The Urquharts moved to
Order of Canada “I was just delighted when they were both appointed to the Order of Canada because she worked as hard as he did. She was a master organizer,” he said. S h i r l e y Sp i l s b u r y, a Highland Creek resident who once worked in the Scarborough College library, remembered the Urquharts this week as a polite couple who in their later years walked frequently to Highland Creek Village and back, arm in arm. “Both of them were very shy, although he spoke well,” said Spilsbury, adding Fred Urquhart always gave
a bursary to the student at Highland Creek Public School who was best at science. Once, when Fred Urquhart was asked why birds don’t eat monarchs, he bit into one into front of the questioner and spat it out, she recalled. “Because they taste awful,” he is supposed to have said. Some years ago, Spilsbury talked to people about erecting a historical plaque in front of the house to recognize the work the Urquharts did there, but couldn’t find anybody who was interested. “We really don’t celebrate our local and national heroes enough,” said Spilsbury, adding she thinks would be nice if the film were screened at the nearby UTSC campus. For the remainder of this spring and summer, Flight of the Butterflies is showing twice daily, and three times daily on weekends, at the Science Centre.

Toronto’s executive committee supports downtown casino DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Mayor Rob Ford’s executive committee has voted 9-4 to go for a casino in downtown Toronto, and expanded gaming at the Woodbine racetrack in north Etobicoke.
The vote came at the end of a two-day meeting, which heard from more than 100 members of the public, and showed a significant rift in the mayor’s inner circle on the issue. Four executive committee members voted no to
opening the door to casino gambling in the city’s downtown: public works committee chair Denzil Minnan-Wong, Don Valley West Councillor Jaye Robinson, planning and growth management committee chair Peter Milczyn and government manage-

ment committee chair Paul Ainslie. Mayor Ford urged his committee to support the plan, dismissing reports from the city’s Medical Officer of Health and others pointing to a suite of social problems a casino might bring to the city, including an increase in gambling addiction. “I just don’t buy these arguments — they don’t exist,” said Ford. “They might as well ban food for fat guys like me. We need the jobs — we need the convention centre. People need to have self control.” Ford maintained the plan put forward by city manager Joe Pennachetti was a good one for Toronto. Pennachetti estimated a casino in downtown Toronto would bring as many as 10,000 jobs to the city, and if the province agreed to his hosting fee formula, could bring in upwards of $141 million in revenue a year. As well, he pointed out if the casino were not located in Toronto, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation would almost certainly locate it in a neighbouring munici-

That would complicate matters for Toronto’s other casino-like operation — Woodbine racetrack, which currently hosts 3,000 slot machines. The committee eventually endorsed the expansion of gaming at Woodbine as well as the downtown location. But there was dissent. Paul Ainslie said he’d spoken with his constituents in Scarborough East, and determined the casino would be bad for Toronto, and not deliver everything it promised. “I appreciate that there are 10,000 jobs supposed to come to a downtown casino,” he
said. “I’ve got a lot of concerns about the level of income.” Jaye Robinson likewise had heard from her constituents. “My constituents are opposed to a casino downtown or on the waterfront,” she said. “I’m uncomfortable about some of the details — too much of the report is unclear.” Other councillors heard differently. “I don’t support casinos for myself, but I was elected to support the decisions of people in my ward,” said Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson. “When I speak to some of my constituents and I say, ‘Would you like to pay more taxes?’, they say, ‘No, I’d rather gamble.’” The committee also endorsed a number of amendments. The committee endorsed a request that the city manager talk with the province about merging Exhibition Place with Ontario Place into a single parcel of land.

We are the reason transit lacks funds
T
he Toronto Region Board of Trade weighed in, and then came Metrolinx. Next week, Toronto councillors will begin to talk about a madein-Toronto plan to raise the tens of billions of dollars it will take to cover the costs of public transit expansion. Both the business group and the provincial transit agency have proposed a broad range of revenue tools as they’re called, for public transit. Toronto’s recommendations are narrower. For the first wave of Big Move transit expansion plans, city staff are recommending four possible ways to pay for transit: dedicated development charges, an additional fuel tax, parking levies and sales tax. The politically dicier options of road tolls and a vehicle registration tax reintroduction would show up in later years. Reaction from Mayor Rob Ford was swift and unequivocal following Tuesday’s release of the recommendations. He wouldn’t support any

Public works and infrastructure committee chair Denzil Minnan-Wong came up with a similar, and on-thesurface-of-it more nuanced position: he told reporters the public should know how much they’re paying for public transit expansion per family, and government should tidy up the way it finances big infrastructure projects, before anyone considers charging any more taxes for anything. On the other side of the political spectrum, ParkdaleHigh Park Councillor and Ford critic Gord Perks bemoaned the fact the recommendations excluded income taxes, which are more progressive than the pay-as-you-go options like road tolls and fuel taxes. At least Perks has made it clear he’ll support the measures in the end. That’s something the mayor
and the guy who heads the committee in charge of the roads haven’t indicated. To sum it up: This, Toronto, is why we can’t have nice things. The reality is that for some time now, things haven’t been very nice at all when it comes to getting around the city. Gridlock on the roads is paralyzing; public transit, particularly the subway system, is suffocatingly overcrowded; and the reason for this is simply enough that it is all underfunded, and has been for decades. Or to put it less kindly: we have been underfunding it for decades. We elected politicians on the promise of reduced and frozen taxes and the elimination of small fees and charges, on the willfully-ignorant assumption we might maintain or even increase the services we need and want. Collectively, we have been fools.

Bach Chamber Youth Choir tops at Kiwanis Festival Scarborough’s Bach Chamber Youth Choir wins at Kiwanis Festival. The youth-based choir, made up of singers aged 12 to 20, have been awarded the Elmer Iseler Best Choir Award at the 2013 Kiwanis Music Festival of Greater Toronto. Under the direction of Linda Beaupre, artistic director and conductor, the youth choir sang two selections. The first, Nothin’ Gonna Stumble My Feet, which is a rousing song by Greg Gilpin, written in the style of a spiritual. And second, I Dreamed of Rain, which is a moving song by singer-songwriter Jan Garrett, written in response to raging wildfires and the threat of war in Iraq. Garrett wrote her song after dreaming of healing rains washing away all anger and strife. Beaupre said, in a release, “I am so pleased to have this choir recognized by these two
fine adjudicators, who are known for their own outstanding work as conductors. Our thanks go to the Toronto Kiwanis Festival for encouraging our choirs to continue to strive for excellence.” The Bach Chamber Youth Choir will perform these pieces at the upcoming concert at the Toronto Centre for the Arts on Saturday, May 11. For tickets, visit ticketmaster. ca. The Elmer Iseler Award has special significance for the Bach Chamber Youth Choir. The award’s namesake, the late Dr. Elmer Iseler, was critical in the development of choral music in Canada. As founder and artistic director of the Elmer Iseler Singers, the Bach Children’s Chorus had the opportunity to sing under Iseler’s direction. Lydia Adams, Iseler’s successor at the helm of the Elmer Iseler Singers, was an
integral player in the formation of the Bach Chamber Youth Choir.

Friends of Guild park organization holds inaugural meeting >>>from page 1 up with 40 park support groups across the city and helped start 40 others. Residents in such groups can adopt and care for trees, cut back invasive plants, organize clean ups, build a natural ice rink or raise money for other projects, Harvey said to around 80 people Thursday at Guildwood Presbyterian Church. Friends groups for parks “show we want to get involved” and a group of local stewards, because people trust them more, could get donations for Guild Park where the city on its own may get none, said Paul Ainslie, the

local councillor. The Guild’s group is coming together at an opportune time. The park’s crumbling centrepiece, a former hotel and restaurant known as the Guild Inn was shuttered a dozen years ago and began a slow deterioration in what the Heritage Canada Foundation calls “demolition by neglect.” On May 3, however, a private proposal to either restore or replace the building, the city’s third attempt to do this since the Inn closed, is due. The floodgates for investment may burst open soon after. This time, a boutique hotel was dropped from the equation but an extra step was added, Ainslie said, for prospective bidders to guarantee they had financing in place. Besides expecting to partner with a company which will build and run a restaurant and banquet hall where the old Inn stands, the city, he said, remains committed to $6 million in projects for the “cultural precinct” around it, including a visitor centre, trails, festival gardens and an arts studio. It’s just the Inn’s sad state that has held these projects back, said Ainslie, since “I can’t have a derelict building and spend $6 million

around it.” The Scarborough East councillor, chairperson of the Toronto Public Library board, is also trying to have the library’s rented Guildwood branch, one of the system’s smallest, rebuilt in the park. A new library building could house meeting space and an archives for the Guild of All Arts, an art colony run by former owners
Rosa and Spencer Clark, who salvaged much of Toronto’s history from landfill as architectural fragments still displayed in the park, community volunteer Janet Heise said. Without the Clarks, she added, “you would have been driving on top of them instead of sitting and enjoying them.” The fledgeling Friends group will elect a board at a May 22 meeting, said Heise, who held up a membership form and a $5 bill to show she was now a member. “What would happen if even more people got involved?” she asked. Eleventh graders from Sir Wilfred Laurier Collegiate, a Guildwood Parkway school with the park running behind it, researched the Guild to help it seek a national heritage park designation. “We had such an important piece of history sitting next door to us and nobody knew about it,” said Vishmayaa Jeyamoorthy, a student who reported on how the Women’s Royal Naval Service, or WRENS, once trained at the Guild. “I could not believe that something this cool had happened.” Thousands will recognize the Guild’s Greek Theatre from the
Toronto-born singer Drake’s video, Headlines, which continues the park’s artistic legacy for a new generation, said Nina Esmail, another of the researchers. One man said he had already a list of the kind of things the Friends can get involved in. A frequent runner in the park, he said its paths, “the bones of the park,” aren’t well maintained, and water pools in muddy spots group members could fix with wood chips. Though some city parks staff go out of their way to make events such as the annual Guild Alive With Culture a success, many tend to follow procedures and “I don’t always get them to think outside the box,” Ainslie said, though he added attitudes are changing. The councillor said he’s hosting a meeting next Monday, April 22 at Wilfred Laurier to update residents on the city’s Guild Inn request for proposal process as well on the emerald ash borer, an invasive beetle the city expects will destroy most trees in the park and the surrounding Guildwood subdivision over the next few years.

Toffoli rookie of the year NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com
SHARED HONOUR One thing these two Scarborough natives share in common is the AHL’s rookie of the year award. Rick Middleton, above, won his in 1974 while Tyler Toffoli, at right, was honoured by the league last Friday. He’s been up with the Los Angeles Kings for more than a month and is pictured, here, celebrating a goal. Photo/VICTOR DECOLONGON
Not a bad week for Birchmount Park Collegiate alumni in the American Hockey League (AHL): one was named rookie of the year – becoming the second Scarborough native so honoured – while another was tied for the scoring lead heading into last night’s games. Scarborough native Tyler Toffoli who turns 21 on April 24 has been named the AHL rookie of the year – even though he hasn’t been with the Manchester Monarchs for more than a month. The former Birchmount Park Collegiate student has been with the Los Angeles Kings since being called up in mid-March. He enjoyed a pretty decent National Hockey League debut with two goals and three assists in eight games; but he’s been a healthy scratch for the Kings’ last seven games, including the
Kings’ 3-2 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks Tuesday night. Toffoli’s AHL team certainly misses his contribution of 28 goals and 20 assists for 48 points in 55 games. With him in the lineup they’re 28-22-2-3; without him 7-91-1, although they’re getting used to it, presently on a fourgame winning streak. Toffoli is a second round draft pick, 47th overall. The last Scarborough native to earn the AHL rookie of the year is now in the Scarborough Walk of Fame. Rick Middleton, who achieved the honour in 1974, grew up in the Kennedy/Ellesmere area and was inducted into the Scarborough Walk of Fame in 2008. Other notables who have earned AHL rookie of the year honours include: Terry Sawchuk (1949), Roger Crozier (1964), Darryl Sutter (1980), Pelle Lindbergh (1981), Steve Thomas (1985), Ron Hextall (1986), Brent Hull (1987), Felix Potvin (1992), Darcy Tucker (1996), Daniel Briere (1998) and Tyler Ennis (2010).
i
Throughout his 14-year NHL career, Middleton produced at nearly a point a game pace, notching 988 points (448g, 540a) in 1005 games. His playoff percentage was nearly as high notching 100 points (45g, 55a) in 114 games.
■ AHL scoring leader
Another former Birchmount Park Collegiate student, meanwhile, was tied for the scoring lead heading into last night’s games. Brandon Pirri, who grew up in the Beaches neighbourhood and split his high school years between Birchmount Park Collegiate and Vaughan Road Academy (two years each), boasted 70 points (21 goals, 49 assists) in 74 games for the Rockford IceHogs. Selected in the second round (59th overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks, Pirri has yet to be called up this year. He’s played six NHL games over the last two years with two assists.

Civic centre takes steps to preserve heritage items MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com One of the oldest books in the city’s care, the Thomson Bible, sat until last month in a case under the main staircase at Scarborough Civic Centre, its open pages slowly fading and curling. But thanks to a resident who alerted a local councillor, Paul Ainslie, the bible, a family possession of Scarborough’s first settlers David and Mary Thomson, will be better preserved and other historical items at the Scarborough Civic Centre will be repaired or replaced. The rescued book, dated from 1815, was a gift to the former City of Scarborough in the 1970s but after amalgamation wasn’t logged as a city artifact. Overlooked, it remained on display for an excessive length of time, exposed to “fairly severe light and heat conditions,” Wayne Reeves, the city’s chief museum services curator, said.

Hastings Buggy at Scarborough Civic Centre. Young museum volunteers will clean and repair the old horse-drawn carts, moving them out of the soil and houseplants they have sat in and preparing a new interpretive panel for the display.
“Things get lost in the shuffle,” he said. “It was fortuitous that this was in a location that wasn’t in direct sunlight.”
Ac t i n g o n a re q u e s t from Ainslie, Reeves and Scarborough Historical Museum curator Madeleine Callaghan led a team which
examined each of the rotunda’s long standing historical displays, including the Hastings Buggy and Cutter, which they said also require
care. Young museum volunteers will clean and repair the old horse-drawn carts, moving them out of the soil and houseplants they have sat in and preparing a new interpretive panel for the display. And likely starting next year, the same volunteer group, called the Scarborough Museum Youth Collective, will work to identify artifacts that can tell “great stories of Scarborough” in some of the rotunda’s display spaces, Reeves said. “These are all the great changes that you’ll see.” Other rotunda cases have for years housed objects related to the 1973 visit of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip to Scarborough, photographs of the 1980 Marathon of Hope appearance at the building by Terry Fox and sculptures by Elizabeth Fraser Williamson.

3D ads could soon be arriving on bus shelters
“
RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Three dimensional digital advertising could soon appear on TTC bus shelters following a vote by the city’s public works committee. The committee voted 4-2 at its recent meeting to recommend the installation of the colourful, static, LCD ads as part of an update of the city’s contract with Astral Media, which designs, installs and maintains new street furniture such as bus shelters in exchange for a share of advertising revenues. The company scaled back advertising on its information pillars following a public outcry. Despite opposition from some committee members worried about safety issues arising from potentially distracting advertising on bus shelters, committee

– Councillor Janet Davis
chair Denzil Minnan-Wong said such concerns were little more than an attempt to discredit Astral. “I think there’s some members of council who are unnecessarily vilifying the city’s partner,” said Minnan-Wong following the meeting. He said the city stands to generate 32 per cent of every dollar earned through advertising revenue above a threshold of $1.5 million. But committee-member Janet Davis, who wanted to
defer a decision on the proposal, said the city won’t see a dime even if the threshold is reached for at least five more years when the contract reaches its tenth year. “What we’re going to see is 400 bus shelters with video advertising and Astral gets all the proceeds,” said Davis. Davis said increasing opportunities for advertising would only lead to more “dangerous and distracting clutter” in bus shelters. “Bus shelters need to be visible, both for drivers and passengers. It’s a safety issue.” City council will consider adopting the committee’s recommendations on digital advertising and the updated deal with Astral when it meets next month. Pay less for home insurance Shopping for a home can be a fun experience, but with the numerous associated expenses it can be stressful as well. One item that home buyers rarely consider is the cost to insure the potential new home. “Things like having to replace some flooring or kitchen cabinets may sway a homebuyer’s decision, but the cost of insuring the home is rarely considered,” says insurance expert Wayne Ross. “What many homebuyers don’t realize is that by considering a couple of additional factors in their buying decision, they can easily save a few hundred dollars on their insurance costs every year.” Ross suggests looking into a few key factors before making the big purchase: Location. If you live in a neighbourhood with a low crime rate you’ll pay a lower premium. Proximity to fire protection. Homeowners who live close to a fire hydrant or fire station will pay lower premiums as a result
There are a few things to consider when buying a new home that can help you save on home insurance.
of decreased fire risk. Heating. Do you use oil, gas or electric? If you heat with oil, or own a wood stove, you’ll likely also burn more money on your insurance premium. Wiring. Do you have breakers or fuses? Old wiring? Low electricity flow coming into the house? Answers to these questions will affect your insurance costs and eligibility for insurance. Your insurer might require upgrades. Roof. If your roof has not
been updated in the last 20 years, you might not qualify for insurance until it is re-shingled. Other factors like the existence of a monitored security and fire alarm system or a swimming pool will also factor into your insurance costs. Before you make the final decision on the purchase of a new home, talk to your insurance broker or company to determine insurance costs.
