Owl Prowl slated for Rouge Valley Silent flyers, owls are waiting for their prey in Scarborough’s Rouge River Valley, and local naturalists invite people to see their “mysterious world” firsthand. The Rouge Valley Foundation is leading “owl prowls” into the valley this weekend from the group’s Conservation Centre just east of the Toronto Zoo

at 1749 Meadowvale Rd., also called the Pearse House. The events on Saturday, Feb. 15 and Sunday, Feb. 16, are from 7 to 9 p.m. and include a presentation on the area’s owls and coyotes (it’s coyote mating season), as well as a hike into Rouge Park. There’s no charge, but the foundation is asking for a $2

donation to cover costs. People on the prowls are asked to dress warmly in layers, and a travel mug is recommended to hold hot chocolate, tea or coffee that will be provided, the group said in a release. Spaces for the events are limited, so the foundation asks participants to pre-register by

email at info@rvcc.ca, including the number of people attending, and whether any of these are children. A phone number is requested from those who register in case the events are cancelled due to extreme weather conditions. Participants can check for a cancellation by calling 416282-8265.

Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie said he’s worried but still hopeful a deal will soon be signed by the City of Toronto to revive the derelict Guild Inn in his ward. “I knock on wood every day,” said Ainslie, who like other residents has seen two prospective city partnerships with third parties come to nothing since the city closed the historic former Inn in 2001. In the eight months since city council accepted a proposal last June from a company willing to build and operate a restaurant and banquet hall at the Inn, reports on negotiations have been delayed several times. Dynamic Hospitality and Entertainment Group was the only company which pre-qualified to make a bid. A longterm agreement with Dynamic would need to be approved by council, the Toronto Preservation Board and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, which owns the land in Guild Park. Ainslie said he’s been told there were “some legal issues or hurdles” the city was trying to work out, and a report on negotiations could come to council’s government management committee on Feb. 24. >>>HOPES, page 7

Franklin foundation shows support for at-risk youth NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Toronto couldn’t ask for a better ambassador than Scarborough native Orlando Franklin who grew up playing football in the local Thunder minor football organization, and ended up playing in his first Super Bowl earlier this month. Asked at a Monday press conference at the Hard Rock Cafe in downtown Toronto about his relationship with the city he grew up in, the Denver Broncos offensive lineman said: Childhood friends “I spend about four and a half months here in Toronto. I’m pretty much here every chance I can get... It’s a place where I can see my childhood friends. I can get different types of food – it’s so diverse. I love it. It doesn’t matter if it’s cold or if it’s hot, I’m always looking forward to coming back to Toronto.”

adding back in Denver “I’ll go to about 12 to 15 (games) a year.” He just missed being able to watch fellow Scarborough resident Chris Stewart who suited up for the Denverbased Colorado Avalanche, but was traded the year before Franklin arrived. Of course, that did work out well for Franklin. “I bought my house from Chris Stewart,” he said. Stewart also played football, and was a star running back in high school at West Hill Collegiate. Asked what he thought about Mayor Rob Ford in a widely publicized photo wearing Franklin’s jersey, Franklin was diplomatic. “Any support I can get from Toronto I’m happy. I would hope that he (Mayor Ford) would wear my jersey being that I am from Toronto and he is the mayor of Toronto and he knows that I’m from here.” He was more enthusiastic when asked about his ‘Orlando

Franklin Foundation’: “It just really focuses on at-risk teens and helps them with their transition into adulthood,” said Franklin, who has been open about his own story as an ‘at-risk’ teen raised in a single-parent family. In his case, he has credited his mother as being the key in helping turn his own life around. Now he’s just trying to return the favour where and when he can. “I do a lot in group homes and stuff here in the Toronto area. I just try to let these kids know that pretty much if I was able to make it, then you guys can do exactly the same thing. “It’s just how hard you’re willing to work and sacrifice. I try to sit down and talk to schools. I try to do stuff in the community, just anything I can really do just to really have a direct impact on young people’s lives and just help them as they get older.” And finally, of course, there

was the matter of the Super Bowl – which Denver lost 43-8 to the Seattle Seahawks. A shocking end to an otherwise outstanding season. He hasn’t watched the replay. He doesn’t have to. “I’ve personally probably seen that game about 100 times in my head. I wish I could have taken back about five plays in that game and I think if I’d played better on those five plays that the outcome of the game would be a little different.” Franklin said he is already looking forward to next season with the Broncos, hoping he can stretch his playoff streak to all four years in the league. “The good thing about it is, we’ve got a great team. I believe in my heart of hearts that if we come out and work the way we worked last year than we will back in that game (the Super Bowl).

Savouring the new Winter Games lingo

o, I went to get my morning cup of coffee in the food court. At the usual place. At the usual time. From the usual cashier. And before I even had a chance to open my mouth, as usual, the cashier asked, “The usual, sir?” (By the way, that’s a large quintuple quintuple, for those keeping score at home.) Anyhow, also as usual, she waited for my usual vertical nod of approval. But said nod was not forthcoming. Much to her surprise, my head movement was of the horizontal variety, signifying an unexpected negative response. “Not this time,” I replied. “I’ll still take a large, but instead of the usual, I feel like I want to have it slopestyyyyyle.” The crowd gasped. The person right behind me tapped me on my shoulder. “Excuse me, mister, but I couldn’t help but overhear

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY your coffee request. Did you just order a large slopestyle?” “Close. Actually, what I said was slopestyyyyyle. You have to make sure to elongate the styyyyyle for effect. Try it a few times. You’ll get the hang of it.” Then the cashier gave me my cup and a high five and I scurried off to work while in the background I could hear everyone enthusiastically screaming their orders, “Slopestyyyyyle. Slopestyyyyyle. Slopestyyyyyle.” Impressed by my morning java, for lunch I went back to the food court to grab a slice at the pizza counter. I stood in the usual line. For the usual length of time. I was greeted by the usual cashier. Then, as usual, without me having to say anything, the cashier inquired, “The usual, sir?”

(That’s a pineapple quintuple quintuple, for those still keeping score at home.) Again, I didn’t follow the usual script. “I’ll take a rain check, if that’s OK. Can you make it slopestyyyyyle, instead?” Then he gave me my slice, a low five (he’s taller than me) and I left serenaded by another chorus of, “Slopestyyyyyle. Slopestyyyyyle. Slopestyyyyyle.” A trend was clearly developing. So, not one to mess with a good thing, after work I decided to go back to the food court one last time before calling it a day. I went to grab a sub first and it was more of the same routine. “The usual, sir?” “Nah. I was kinda hoping for slopestyyyyyle.” Next, I went to pick up some ice cream. “The usual, sir?” “Nope. What I had in mind was slopestyyyyyle.” Then, it was off to the organic juice hut for a

smoothie to wash it all down. “The usual, sir?” “No thanks. Today has slopestyyyyyle written all over it.” Well, soon after inhaling the goodies, I had to make a beeline for the drugstore on the lower level. The pharmacist could tell by my expression I’d eaten too much too fast. To help relieve my tummy ache he suggested a liquid antacid. “The usual, sir?” I mumbled. “Not in this case. What is secret to Ford’s steady support? Subway track work in Scarborough Here are some recent data points about our mayor, that can only confound. One: Mayor Rob Ford’s approval rating has fallen, slightly, to 43 per cent according to a Forum Research poll released on the weekend. Two: on Tuesday, a small protest of women and their children, set up outside the mayor’s office, focused not on any city policy – but on Ford’s moral turpitude. The poll was released a day before and the protest came the day after Ford clarified, on YouTube, that he’d lied about using crack cocaine because he was “embarrassed,” as many people would be under the circumstances, and so chose to lie... as people, he said, do. And it all came days after Ford decided to drop all pretense about scheduling conflicts surrounding the Pride parade and out himself as what is effectively a homophobe, trying to haul down rainbow flags and snubbing World Pride as a matter of identity. It’s unlikely these two events will do anything to sway either the 40-odd per cent of Torontonians who continue

david nickle the city to approve of the mayor’s performance, or the undefined number of parents who can no longer conceal their disgust for the mayor. And therein lies the confounding puzzle: how it is that a man who has seemingly embraced bigotry, dishonesty and criminal substance abuse can hold the support of such a significant percentage of the city? To say that Toronto has a growing strain of conservatism is not enough. Toronto has, apparently, an unbelievably high level of tolerance for intolerance and dishonesty. That is so unbelievable, that it is unlikely to be true. What’s a more likely: many of us are deeply susceptible to locally based, retail politics. Willowdale Councillor John Filion spoke about the Ford phenomenon in his ward, where Ford did well in 2010 and still enjoys support. Filion has been described as a leftleaning councillor, insists he’s

really a centrist, and has managed to maintain the support of a ward whose voters have leaned to the right for two decades. Filion says he suspects many voters support Ford and himself for the same reason. “I’m a little like Rob Ford in that I’m out in the community all the time,” said Filion “They see me in the community, say, ‘that guy understands us.’ Last election, I often had people saying I’m voting for you and for Rob Ford. They basically say it because ‘we think you both care about us.’” Filion said he could see Ford winning in October, if the field is crowded and another candidate doesn’t emerge who provides the same feeling of commonality that he does, “I hope there’s someone else the public can identify with more,” said Filion. “I haven’t seen who they are yet. They really have to own their messages, or the Ford brothers will just body slam them and put them in a submission hold and throw them out of the ring.”

Eglinton Avenue West is going to get a whole lot busier with news from Metrolinx that it is limiting access to Allen Road for the foreseeable future. The provincial transit planning agency is constructing the underground section of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line which has resulted in traffic disruptions even with the main construction taking place below the avenue. This week, Metrolinx announced it is reducing northbound access to the Allen to one westbound lane for “many months”. That’s in addition to the existing lane restrictions along Eglinton Avenue West. Maintenance crews will take part in scheduled track replacement work from Feb. 15-17, and during that time there will be no service in either direction between Kennedy and Warden. Trains are expected to turn back at Victoria Park Station and riders wanting to travel further east will have to take a shuttle bus service which the TTC promises will operate near the same frequency as the subway – every three to five minutes. Regular bus service will not be effected and WheelTrans service is available at both stations. Normal subway service will resume at the start of Tuesday morning. Joan Wideman, board chair o f RV S H , had previously said Ganderton, CEO and president since 2007, RIK would stay GANDERTON on “until at least the end of January.” She announced Ganderton would remain as interim president and CEO until June 27. RHVS and The Scarborough Hospital have notified the province they intend to merge, though both hospitals will wait for their boards of directors to confirm the merger decision in votes this spring, when the two could become a single institution. Wideman said Ganderton will lead the hospital through a remaining period of “due diligence” as both hospitals examine each other’s records

to prepare for a merger. “This brings stability and continuity to leadership at RVHS during this period,” she added. Bridlewood school celebrates 50 years Bridlewood Junior Public School is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The school opened its doors at 60 Bridlewood Blvd., in the Pharmacy Avenue and Huntingwood Drive area, in December 1963 with 10 classrooms. The school’s official opening date is Feb. 27, 1964. Less than a year after the school opened, another six classrooms were added. A Scarborough photography studio says it hopes to use the “extraordinary beauty to be seen” following the chaos of the 2013 ice storm in Toronto to help some residents who were adversely affected. f there were ever a musical that shone a light on the love, struggles and bonds within a family, Scarborough Music Theatre’s production of Little Women, completely captures those sentiments. Many of us may recall the story of the March sisters in the beloved book by Louisa May Alcott and the film versions that followed, so staging a story so personal to many could be considered a risky venture, with unavoidable comparisons. However, if you’re familiar, and love, the original story, you won’t be disappointed at this version written by Allan Knee, with music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein. It’s based on the original book, and the talented actors who portray the March sisters make them come to life on stage by staying true to their personalities while also adding their own individual nuances to the characters.

A coming-of-age story told through a combination of memory flashbacks and the present-day moments of Jo (Katie Wise), the fiery and ambitious second-oldest March sister, this show is full of lively musical numbers, heartfelt and funny moments. aspiring The show opens with Jo, an aspiring writer living in New York City, describing her latest story to fellow boarder Professor Bhaer (Ted Powers). Soon after, we’re transported back to the March living room where this story was first reenacted by the sisters, Jo, the oldest Meg (Lauren-Eve Lazar), Beth (Carina Cautillo), and the youngest, Amy (Sarah DaCunha). It’s the 1860s and the girls are trying to liven up a dismal Christmas as their father is off in the Civil War and there’s no money for presents. However, their mother, Marmee (Laurie Hurst), has instilled in them that as long as they stand by one another they’ll always

have everything they need. Caring for one another and staying strong amidst adversity is the crux of this show that highlights the highs and lows of the March family and the people in their lives. This includes Aunt March (Karen Brown), neighbour Laurie (Jeff Hookings), his grandfather Laurence (Chris Hardess) and his tutor, John (Luke Slade). Add to this the amazingly polished and beautiful musical numbers that range from lively to sentimental, romantic and funny, mimicking the tone of the show. Sweet moments include songs such as Off to Massachusetts, sung beautifully by Cautillo and Hardess as Beth and Grandfather Laurence, and Some Things Are Meant To Be, a tearjerker sung by Wise as Jo and Cautillo as Beth. The cast is talented in the portrayal of their characters and their powerful singing. Litte Women runs until Feb. 22 until 8 p.m. at the Scarborough Village Theatre. Tickets are $27. Precious Blood Catholic School principal Mirella Rossi, working on an outdoors project with students, has been named one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals by The Learning Partnership.

he roles and responsibilities of a school principal are tenfold – maintaining a safe and friendly climate for student achievement, evaluating the quality of the curriculum and faculty, and fostering links with families and the rest of the community. It’s due to that and a willingness to experiment that Mirella Rossi of Scarborough’s Precious Blood Catholic School was nominated by her colleagues and named to the 10th annual list of Canada’s Outstanding Principals. The honour is presented by The Learning Partnership (TLP), a nonprofit organization that created stakeholder part-

nerships to promote public education. Rossi, who earlier received an Exemplary Practice Award from the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), is the only principal from Toronto to be selected by TLP this year, and one of 12 from Ontario to be acknowledged in a group of 40 administrators across the country. Education precious “When we held our monthly Virtue Assembly, I shared the story that when I received the phone call I almost couldn’t get past the word ‘Canada,’” said Rossi. “I was so incredibly proud and overwhelmed because my parents were immigrants who came with

suitcases in their hands; they both wanted us to be educated here and held it as a precious aspect of our lives.” Originally with a commerce and arts background, Rossi found that entering a career in the latter was a “natural progression” after tutoring children and teaching Sunday school. She began as an elementary French instructor and worked her way through the TCDSB as a teacher in various grades and in the special education and gifted programs. Her former assignments were at St. Charles Grainer and Holy Redeemer in North York and Blessed Sacrament. Having completed four years as a principal, Rossi

has contributed to new approaches to progressive discipline, undertaken in the design of a ‘faith garden’ for a retired parish priest and published research on the importance of leadership in academic success. Precious Blood, which has an enrollment of nearly 460, is also the home of the Student-Led Learning Walk, an adaptation of the parent-teacher interview developed by Rossi and her staff to improve parental engagement, as well as encourage 21st century skills such as collaboration and real-world problem solving. “Work samples are posted from kindergarden to Grade 8 in a particular area of focus, and teachers and students have

an opportunity to have conversations about what everyone else has done,” she explained. “Parents are invited to drop into the gym where their child leads them through the walk, at their own pace and in their own language. Our hope is that communities can look at our simple practice and see that the breadth and depth of what we learn from one another can be far-reaching.“ “We celebrate those who go ‘above and beyond’,” said Akela Peoples, president and CEO of TLP. “Mirella has chosen to make time to voluntarily take on unique opportunities to interact with and impact students and teachers.” Rossi will join an assem-

bly of more than 300 previous COP winners on Feb. 25 at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel for this year’s presentation. Currently pursuing a doctorate at the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), in the same week she will also attend an executive training program at the campus’ Rotman School of Management. “I plan to continue in the area of knowledge construction and what that looks like in our schools, so I’m hoping that it will further help inform my practice as an educator,” Rossi said. “I am a lifelong learner.”

Heritage Week events planned locally Heritage Day/Family Day is the third Monday of February, and Heritage Week gives us a chance to look back at Scarborough’s history. To mark the occasion, a special Heritage Week display will be set up in the Scarborough Town Centre at Sears Court, Feb. 21 to 23. From the old township’s beginning in 1799 with the arrival of Scottish immigrants David and Mary Thomson the community has grown to become the home of new immigrants from almost every part of the world. Old community names established in the 19th century include L’Amoreaux, Agincourt, Malvern, Hillside, Woburn, Bendale, Highland Creek, West Hill, Wexford, Scarborough Village, Scarborough Junction and Birch Cliff. Photo albums for each of these communities will be on display for visitors to examine and compare. Dur ing the post war boom, developers quickly transformed open farmland into streets of closely packed houses, commercial build-

rick schofield looking back ings and industry. By 1955 the population had surpassed 100,000 and Scarborough had become one of the federated municipalities of Metropolitan Toronto. Aerial photographs in the Scarborough Archives dating from 1949 to 1970s clearly illustrate the rapid transformation of the landscape and these albums will also be on display at the Scarborough Town Centre exhibit. One major area of post war development was the Golden Mile of Industry. The change to a modern industrial community began in earnest in 1949 when an industrial committee was formed by then Reeve Oliver E. Crockford and his council. In a few short years, rural Eglinton Avenue was transformed by the location of multi-million dollar industries and called Scarborough’s Golden Mile, a name synonymous with success and known throughout Canada.

Stretching one mile from Pharmacy to Warden, the Golden Mile consisted of industries such as Volkswagen, John Inglis, Frigidaire, S.K.F., Roots Motors, Link Belt and a host of others. Sixty years ago, a massive shopping plaza was added to the west. Once Canada’s largest shopping centre, the Golden Mile plaza was officially opened on April 7,1954. Almost 2,000 men were employed in the construction project, which cost more than $4 million. It provided more than 175,000 square feet of commercial and office space. The plaza also had the distinction of being the first shopping centre in Canada to house both a theatre and a bowling alley. It has since been demolished. Vo l u n t e e r s f ro m t h e Scarborough Archives will be on hand throughout the Feb. 21 to 23 weekend to meet with Mirror readers and the general public to exchange stories and information.
