Muay Thai fighter Valtellini goes international Rebecca Field rfield@insidetoronto.com Nine minutes and it’s over. It could be sooner with a kick to the head, or a punch to the ribs. As long as the opponent is knocked out, the judges’ decision on who wins is made for them. It’s this type of strategy that Scarborough Muay Thai fighter Joseph ‘Bazooka Joe’ Valtellini takes with him to the ring in what is called “the art of eight limbs”. Now, the 27 year old will be doing it professionally at the international level, competing in the Glory World Series. Signed to Glory Valtellini has been signed on to Glory, an international stand-up fighting league, after only eight professional and 11 amateur fights, losing only one, said Kru Paul Minhas, his coach and manager. Valtellini switched to professional fighting less than three years ago after recovering from a broken wrist. “We’re kind of making history with such a small handful of fights,” said Minhas, owner of Ultimate Martial Arts in Scarborough where Valtellini first started training in Muay Thai more than eight years ago at age 19. “There are fighters in there with hundreds of professional fights.” The Glory World Series will allow

level for Thai boxing. “To be able to compete at that level has always been a dream of mine so I actually get to be a part of the biggest events with the best fighters from my sport around the world.”

Cedar Brae golf club repairs on hold due to financial dispute MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Repairs to Cedar Brae Golf and Country Club’s leaking clubhouse roof are on hold because of a dispute with Morningside Heights developers over money, Scarborough Community Council heard this week. Cedar Brae’s 500 members and shareholders voted in 2010 to sell land at the golf course’s south end in order to renew the 1955 clubhouse, a goal the club has had for 20 years, general manager Sean DeSilva told councillors. In the clubhouse there are “buckets on the floor collecting water” because the roof needs replacing, and membership has declined because of its condition, he said. Cedar Brae has proposed building 37 homes on 2.8 acres of what is now the club’s third fairway. But despite approval at the

Scarborough level, the development off Staines Road known as 55 Mac Frost Way was referred back to Scarborough councillors by Toronto Council last November due to objections from the Morningside Heights Landowners Group. Morningside Heights Part of the Morningside Heights Secondary Plan approved by the Ontario Municipal Board in 2000 says the group, the neighbourhood’s original developers, must be paid a fair share of infrastructure costs before a new subdivision can be registered. City of Toronto staff have recommended Cedar Brae pay a share of costs only for the sewers it uses, an amount the city estimated last November as $103,566. Andrew Madden, representing the MHLG said the city’s current recommended amount was $76,000 and

didn’t include the new subdivision’s share of a storm water pond. The developers’ group said Cedar Brae must pay $824,696 but this week gave the club an itemized list the day before Tuesday’s meeting totaling a payment of $454,176, which Madden said was fair. A lawyer for the club, Catherine Lyons, said it is close to an agreement with MHLG and asked councillors not to defer a decision on the development. After an in camera discussion, the Scarborough councillors approved the staff recommendation and sent the matter downtown again, where, Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande said, council members will be happy to hear the dispute is settled. It seems fair that if developers build services and others benefit, they should pay, but it’s not up to city councillors to mediate a private dispute, he said.

Valtellini, who is the only Canadian in the competition, has been interested in martial arts since childhood. He was born and raised near Danforth and Birchmount, the same area he still lives in. He would practice on makeshift punching bags built by his dad, said Valtellini. “It was a way for my dad and I to bond,” said Valtellini. “I memorized all of the words from my favourite fighting movies, and we would wrestle around on the floor.” He signed up for Tae Kwan Do at age seven, receiving his black belt by age 10, and moving on to a second-degree black belt by the time he was in Grade 10 at SATEC@W.A. Porter Collegiate It was during the summer after his first year at the University of Toronto in the health and physical education program that Valtellini found Muay Thai. A co-worker at his summer job working at Pine Ridge Cemetery suggested he go for a trial at Ultimate Martial Arts, where Valtellini met his coach Minhas for the first time. “I had all that experience in standup fighting and Muay Thai was just the perfect transition from Tae Kwan Do,” said Valtellini. “It got me more motivated and brought me into the gym more frequently.” Valtellini took his years of martial arts training into the classroom at Scarborough’s Sir William Osler

High School where he teaches Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu to a class of six students. “I’m finding that it’s been a way for them to challenge, channel their energy and their aggressive side. So it’s an outlet for them,” said Valtellini. “It’s cool because I’ve always wanted to give back to the Scarborough community because I w a s b o r n i n S c a r b o ro u g h General (hospital), went to school in Scarborough, still teach in Scarborough.” Valtellini now trains with Minhas five days a week in Muay Thai, along with athletic performance training five days a week with Costa Kladianos at Tempus Performance, also located in Scarborough. “My dad comes to my fights, it’s something that my mom can’t watch,” said Valtellini. “My mom is still very supportive, she helps with the cooking aspect of my training.” The sport has one of the highest knockout ratios in the world, according to Minhas. The fights are split into three fast paced, three-minute rounds. “The way we believe is he’s going to knock out everybody,” said Minhas who feels that Valtellini has a very good chance of success even at the new, higheer level of competition. “I’d like to see him finish in the first or second round, and just see his hand raised, that feeling is what we’re training for,” said Minhas.

Developer’s payment towards community centre deferred Once again, people who waited years for money to expand Milliken Park Community Centre will have to wait longer. Past owners of a 42-acre block of land on Steeles Avenue in Scarborough committed to give $1.8 million to the community centre on McCowan Road in order to build The Landmark, a condominiumstyle mall project that would rival the nearby Pacific Mall and Market Village. Payment of what the city calls Section 37 funds was delayed, however, as the project, announced in 2007, stalled. Late in 2011, the land at Middlefield Road was sold to a new owner, Mady Developments of Markham. Mady is still required to pay the $1.8 million, as well as to spend $1 million to preserve or “adaptively reuse” two 19th Century heritage homes on the site. At a Scarborough Community Council meeting this week, Chin Lee, the local councillor, asked council to defer the $1.8 million payment until Aug. 31. Developers “are not flush

with cash” now, and Mady needs more time to pay, said Lee, adding the city will start collecting eight per cent interest a year on the amount owed. Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande asked why payment should be delayed again under a new owner, arguing the city may end up with “eight per cent of zero” if the project fails to materialize. Lee noted another developer in Del Grande’s ward is also “on the hook” for a Section 37 contribution covering a 5,000-square-foot expansion of L’Amoureaux Community Centre - for another Steeles Avenue mall project that hasn’t been built yet, Splendid China II. The deferment for Mady was approved, and community council received a preliminary report on an application to make some zoning changes on the property, 5789-5951 Steeles Ave. E. The size of Mady’s proposed new commercial development is unknown, Lee said. – Mike Adler

Shedding council’s partisan ways

wo big days ahead for the City of Toronto: One, the fate of Mayor Rob Ford’s appeal in his Conflict of Interest case is decided today; and two, a new premier for the Province of Ontario will be selected on Saturday when the Ontario Liberal Party chooses a our view new leader. What will these two events Govern by mean for the city? That all what’s best depends on council, and their ability to put aside partisan politics and actually get down to run- for Toronto ning this city. Regardless of the Ford decision, council and the mayor (whoever that might be) will have to create a relationship with the new premier. If it’s any of the three remaining Toronto contenders – Eric Hoskins, Gerard Kennedy, or Kathleen Wynne – that road might be easier to follow. They already know the ills of the city, and can quickly wrap their heads around them. Even if it’s Sandra Pupatello, the Liberal red shawl Toronto wears makes it easier. Once the legislature is back in business, though, the opposition parties may quickly opt to defeat the Liberal minority and send us into a provincial election, the result of which is anyone’s guess. This is precisely why council must govern based on what is best for Toronto. Party politics will only work against the city. Leave the colourful bickering to Queen’s Park and Parliament Hill. At the city level, it’s about neighbourhoods, and the day-to-day decisions that impact citizens. Toronto City Hall is where councillors should debate what is best for the city and not what is best for their political affiliations. Unfortunately, the later seems the case most days. The brothers Ford, and their allies, are blatantly conservative. Gord Perks, Adam Vaughan and others on the left happily wave their flags. This does nothing but inflame rhetoric, and alienate Torontonians, along with potential political allies in the provincial and federal governments. Council is in the second half of its term. Whether Mayor Ford is at the helm is irrelevant. What is pressing is that all 44 councillors work together because our relationship with the province is key to the city’s future. On transit alone, having a clear vision, one that is not constantly changing, is key because whether its a Progressive Conservative, Liberal or NDP government at Queen’s Park, councillors will have to work with them. newsroom

To the editor: I was surprised to hear the TTC is considering limiting the number of baby strollers on the buses. Don’t they know that families use the buses to get to work and the daycare centres? Are TTC drivers going to let a mother with one or more children stand and wait for the next two or three buses until she can get on? Maybe if the TTC purchased a good bus in the first place, we, the riders, would not have to fight for space on them. Years ago when these things came on service, my first impression was the lack of available seating even when the bus was empty. It is a ridiculous compromise design that does not really suit the needs of the people that use it. The design is all about the wheels and once you step inside, you are compressed between them. While it might have been determined to be a good thing to mix the needs of the transit riders, I think these buses were not the solution and it is obvious they are not. One has to wonder why this design of vehicle was selected in the first place. Chris Belfontaine

Students are the real casualties of Bill 115 To the editor: Here is the day in the life of a Bill 115 casualty: 8 a.m.: Arrive at school to see teachers pacing the sidewalk with “Kill the Bill!” signs. 8:30 a.m.: Knock on the office door of the English department with no response. The door is locked and students will be ignored until 8:45 a.m. 8:45 to 8:50 a.m.: is the time slot given for communication with teachers outside of class. 8:55 a.m. (not a minute sooner): Teachers arrive to class wearing black to signify “the death of democracy”. 10:15 a.m.: Music classes are informed the concert they have been preparing for since September has been cancelled. 11:35 a.m.: Lunch period

starts. Classrooms and offices are locked tight and staff members disappear. Noon: The atmosphere in the school is tense. The cafeteria and hallways are filled with frustrated students whose normal lunchtime activities have been cancelled abruptly. 12:25 p.m.: Students prepare for the possibility school may be cancelled next class so the teachers can participate in a “day of protest”. 1:45 p.m.: On the way to fourth period, a gym teacher announces to another staff member: “If they wanted extra-curriculars so bad, they should’ve joined them outside of school”. The other staff member is quick to agree. 2 p.m.: The Grade 12 World Issues class discusses the Bill 115. They are told

about how rough the teachers have it and how horrible the Liberal government has always been to them. They are asked “Well, what would you have done differently?” 3 p.m.: The ski trip that was organized in October is cancelled. Participants are told that they will get their money back soon. 3:15 p.m.: The gym doors are locked and the teachers are gone. All teams have been cancelled indefinitely. On Monday mornings, school is never a particularly welcome thing. But after waking up every day for six months to the sound of your educators protesting coming to teach you, Monday mornings past don’t seem to be complaint-worthy at all. Though students are told that Bill 115 is not an

issue that concerns them, I hope the timeline above shows that it does. This bill is something students can see, feel and hear at school. We can see it in the doors that are closed in our faces after class time, feel it in the frustration and anger that comes with having clubs and sports teams cancelled and hear it in comments like “If they wanted extracurriculars so bad, they should’ve joined them outside of school” from our supposed role models. I understand the frustration toward Bill 115, and I understand it is the union, not the teachers making these decisions. What I cannot understand is comments such as this and the attitudes behind them that are so belittling and disrespectful to students. R McCulloch

A t T h o m p s o n’s u r g i n g , Scarborough Community Council directed the parks department to produce facts by April on where the indoor and outdoor rinks are in the city, including those run by community groups, and how many hours of free skating or shinny hockey each provide. His motion also asked staff which steps or financial resources are needed to provide more time at arenas for shinny hockey, the unorganized pick-up version of the sport. Scarborough councillors also asked for staff opinion on whether helmets should be mandatory, both for adults and children, on the ice at Toronto rinks. Thompson said a boy was injured Monday when he hit his head on the ice at a North York rink, and later noted some private arenas in the city won’t let anyone on the ice without a helmet. Some councillors at Tuesday’s meeting seemed to agree with the explanation, stated by chairperson Michelle Berardinetti, that Scarborough’s residents had asked

for outdoor rinks to be covered “since they could use them yearround”. New residents note the lack of outdoor rinks and think Scarborough compares unfairly with the rest of Toronto, she said, “but there’s no inequity.” Local hockey volunteer Scott Harrison, however, has been telling ratepayer groups a big inequity exists, and said he’ll keep up the pressure until city politicians do something to correct it. ‘services’ “The people of Scarborough don’t realize the amount of services they don’t have,” he said on Wednesday. “This is a low-cost initiative for youth to be active in the wintertime. And Scarborough is being shortchanged again.” Harrison, a former Toronto District Public School Board trustee, isn’t saying who he blames for shortchanging Scarborough. Plenty of public schools in the area had natural outdoor rinks in the late 1960s and 1970s, when local minor hockey was on the rise and Scarborough was starting to turn out young stars. The schools stopped providing

space for rinks because of liability issues and Scarborough covered some rinks, but even including those, the number of local ice pads is behind the rest of Toronto, said Harrison. He said he can’t explain why local politicians didn’t build more rinks before 1998, in the years when Scarborough remained an independent city. “Scarborough was a very thrifty organization back then,” Harrison said. Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Norm Kelly also concluded in 2008 that “frugal” City of Scarborough policies had resulted in a lack of outdoor pools and rinks after their numbers were examined in a report, Fair Share Scarborough. That research said Scarborough two years before had only 10 indoor rinks, fewer than North York (19) or Etobicoke and York (19 combined) but more than Toronto and East York (six combined), though Scarborough also had the city’s largest indoor ice surfaces. Scarborough councillors this week appeared to suggest school boards should take responsibility again for providing outdoor ice, backing a motion by Glenn De Baeremaeker requesting that boards build rinks at all Scarborough schools.

MP pushes federal government for info on woman’s death A Scarborough MP is pressing Canada’s government “for assurances that there will be a thorough investigation” into the death of a constituent, Jerin Mir this month in Bangladesh. Mir, 21, a Canadian citizen who attended Lester B. Pearson Collegiate, was studying medicine in the country’s capital Dhaka, where she died on Jan. 12 in circumstances that are “uncertain,” Rathika Sitsabaiesan said in a letter to Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Diane Ablonczy. Mir “undoubtedly had a very successful future ahead of her,” said the ScarboroughRouge River MP, adding that since her death, “my office has received numerous correspondences from concerned citizens who are calling for justice on behalf” of Mir and her family.

Police officers from 42 Division made a recordbreaking number of drunkdriving arrests in 2012, and were recognized for their efforts on Wednesday by Mothers Against Drunk Driving Toronto. Police said the division, covering Scarborough north of Hwy. 401, logged 249 arrests for drinking-and-drivingrelated offences, the most ever by a single division. A release said 14 Division, recorded the closest total, 200 arrests, in the downtown neighbourhoods it polices west of Spadina Avenue. At 42 Division’s Milner Avenue headquarters, speakers from MADD were prepar-

ing Wednesday to personally honour Cons. Paul Jackson, who arrested 31 drunk drivers last year, and Cons. Richard War man, who arrested eight.

Young people from East Scarborough will speak directly to more than a dozen community agencies and groups meant to serve their needs next Monday, Jan. 28 at the Ward 43 Youth Summit. In a release, Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie, who represents the ward, says the event from 6 to 8 p.m. at Scarborough Civic Centre on Borough Drive will bring together youth and youth-related organizations “to strengthen our ability to deliver services more directly and efficiently.”

Events include bingo, face painting, outdoor games, ice and snow sculpting, and refreshments. Winterfest is presented by the Centennial Community and Recreation Association, West Rouge Sports and Recreation Association, Port Union Seniors, West Rouge Community Association, and Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation. Activities are free and there

is a minimal cost for food. The Port Union Community Centre is located at 5450 Lawrence Ave..

Save money on home heating Like an unsung hero, the forgotten basement furnace is expected to keep our home at the perfect indoor temperature day and night. This major piece of household equipment is usually out of sight and out of mind—until the energy bill arrives and instead of appreciation, this unsung hero gets nothing but a frown. Did you know that when polled, only 25 per cent of Canadian homeowners said that ‘booking a furnace maintenance appointment” was a household priority? This finding was reported in a Direct Energy survey conducted recently by Angus Reid. In addition, 57 per cent of respondents said they felt ‘concerned’ or ‘angry’ about upcoming winter heating bills. Homeowners can regain far more control of this however. Take a look at this quick and easy tip-list for better heating efficiency, courtesy of Direct Energy: 1. Clean or replace the furnace filter. This one maintenance measure makes a big difference and should be done every three months. Better still, sign up for a furnace protection and maintenance plan. The better ones give you 24-hour emergency service by licensed technicians, plus an annual inspection. The technicians do safety tests for carbon monoxide and natural gas leaks, and they also

test the combustion exhaust of the furnace. 2. Temperature control. Install a programmable thermostat set to lower the temperature throughout the night, or during the day when you are not at home. 3. Circulate: Remember that warm air rises so turn on your ceiling fan to redistribute it into the rest of the room. In the winter months, the blades should rotate in a clockwise direction. 4. Don’t heat unused spaces: Check to make sure that non-insulated places (like the garage and crawl spaces) are not receiving (and immediately losing) valuable heat. In unused rooms, close the registers to conserve. 5. Boost the insulation. A good rule-of-thumb is to aim for approximately 30 centimeters (12 inches) of insulation in the attic and make sure basement headers have insulation too. 6. Assess the furnace. Investigate the advantages of replacing your conventional furnace with a high-efficiency one. Reports show that this can result in cost savings as high as 15 per cent – making it well worth the investment. – newscanada.com

Scarborough teen has sights on sailing into Olympics SEAN DURACK active@insidetoronto.com Twelve-year-old Max Daviau who races out of Frenchman’s Bay Yacht Club, is kind of a big deal. The Scarborough youngster was presented with the George Blanchard Provincial Champions trophy earlier this week at the Toronto Boat Show for his showing in the nine-event Ontario Sailing Association Grand Prix this past season, which ended in November. He is the youngest champion ever in his 10- to 15-year-olds OSA Optimist class. Max, who recently received an invite to a national development program evaluation camp, which takes place in the fall, may be young in age, but he’s already putting his competition, much of it older, on notice. Given the pace at which the St. Richard Catholic School student is growing he is already on track to becoming one of the club’s Olympic hopefuls alongside another young clubmate making waves, Robert Lalonde. If Max makes it that far he’d be in the same company as former club members and Olympians Rod

His father is convinced Max can qualify for the Olympic Games. “On one hand I am optimistic, and on the other hand I’ve already resigned myself to it,” he said with a laugh. The 150-member, “small-butmighty” Frenchman’s Bay Yacht Club, located in Pickering, is always looking for new interest, according to its rear commodore. “There’s nothing more Canadian than being on the water and anyone can come off the street and learn how to sail. His dad says Max took to the competitive side of sailing quite naturally four years ago. “I can remember when he was just a little guy, the first day I dropped him off at the club’s sailing school. He loved it. When I picked him up that evening he gets into the car and says ‘Dad, I want to go to sailing school for the rest of my life’.” “He kept improving from there and they (organizers) kept moving him up classes,” added the dad. Eventually Max stopped winning every regatta, but he continued to improve vastly. By 2011 he qualified for the national team. Max, who reserves some of his spare time for reading and playing the piano and clarinet, has set some goals for himself and he knows what he needs to do to make those Olympic goals come to fruition. And he’s seemingly prepared to do what it takes. “I plan to go to the Olympics and I plan to do well there,” said the sailing phenom.

Scarborough’s Tyler Toffoli may not have stuck with the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings to start the season, but he’s making the most of his first year in professional hockey – by being selected to play in the American Hockey League (AHL) all-star classic. It pits the league’s eastern and western conferences on Monday in Providence, Rhode Island, and broadcast throughout Canada on Sportsnet. Toffoli, who leads AHL rookies in goalsscored with 19 and is second in points on his Manchester Monarchs team with 31 (19 goals, 12 assists) in 39 games, and tops in plus-minus at plus-14, will suit up for the eastern conference. The former Ottawa 67s star will play against Toronto Beach resident Jamie Oleksiak, selected from the Texas Stars to play defence for the western conference. Both players are 20 years old and got their start in hockey in the Scarborough Hockey Association. Toffoli, who was in Los Angeles for their brief training camp, was selected by Los Angeles Kings in the second round, 47th overall in 2010. Toffoli welcomed another Scarborough player on Manchester this week with Scarborough born and raised Anthony Stewart, 28, also sent down by Los Angeles.
