Parent representatives from Cornell Junior Public School said some of its families will keep their children out of public schools or leave Canada if Ontario’s new sex education curriculum isn’t changed. The mid-Scarborough school was one of the hardest hit in Toronto last month by a oneweek parents’ strike over sex ed, with more than 700 of 850 students absent on its first day. It’s the last gasp for opponents of the McNicoll Bus Garage plan. The TTC wants to build a $181 million storage and maintenance facility on industrial lands it owns near the intersection of Kennedy Road and McNicoll Avenue in the hopes of addressing its chronic shortage

of bus space. But local groups in the area, including Chinese seniors and the Scarborough Baptist Church, which sits adjacent to the proposed site, fear there will be substantial increases to emissions, noise and traffic if the garage is built. A walk this weekend in Highland Creek will raise funds for research into a rare genetic disorder at Sick Kids hospital. Maya Murphy, 10, was born with primary ciliary dyskinesia, a condition that affects the functioning of the cilia, leading to chronic respiratory tract infections. Following a three-day hospital stay when Maya was a toddler, her parents decided to give back. “Just the care that she received and the way they treat patients there made me realize that I really want to do something for this hospital,” Maya’s mom Paula said. “I put a call out to family and friends ... and the response was absolutely overwhelming so Maya’s March was born.” The annual event has

raised more than $70,000; Paula hopes to bring in another $15,000 this weekend. “It’s such a rare disorder that research funds are few and far between,” she said.

Maya’s classmates at Highland Creek Public School have also joined the cause, making bracelets that will be sold at the fundraiser. Future funds will go towards the development of a patient research database that will be used to identify factors and interventions that predict better outcomes for people with PCD.

Suspect identified in shooting Police have identified the man gunned down at a Scarborough barber shop Monday as Mahmedaarif Patel. Police said the 23-year-old was shot during a fight at the shop on Lawrence Avenue near Greencrest Circuit (east of Markham Road) around 2 p.m. on June 1. “Two men were observed fighting and one shot the other,” said Const. Jeniffer Sidhu, noting a woman then drove Patel to a Petro Canada gas station at Bellamy Road and Lawrence where paramedics pronounced him dead. Police didn’t release a description of the shooter. It’s not yet know if the murder is related to Friday’s drive-by shooting at Eglinton Avenue and Markham that injured two men. - Andrew Palamarchuk

Future of Gardiner Expressway should not be taken lightly

hould it stay? Should it go? When it comes to the Gardiner Expressway, it appears everyone has something to say. The future of the muchdebated Gardiner is coming up at Toronto City Council’s monthly meeting June 10. After much discussion about which option is best – besides doing ‘nothing’ – the two options left standing are the ‘hybrid’ option – re-configuring the expressway, basically – and the ‘removal’ option, which would tear down the entire portion east of Jarvis Street creating an eight-lane, ground-level boulevard. Factions have come down on both sides: The Toronto Region Board of Trade is on the hybrid side of things as is Mayor John Tory, whose SmartTrack plan plays into this option with a major transit hub proposed for a newly developed 49 acres of land, some public our view some private. On Monday, former Toronto Time to act mayor David Crombie together with the city’s former city planon Gardiner ner said tearing it down is the is now right decision. Also on Monday, the Toronto Board of Health decided not to send to council the report by Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown that stated removal would provide the most health benefits. And of course councillors also fall on different sides of the debate, as do Torontonians after they were given the chance to weigh in on the issue during meetings over the last several months. According to a recent poll by Mainstreet Technologies, 45 per cent of respondents prefer the removal option versus 33 per cent who chose the hybrid option. After all is said and done, it’s time for council to put its money where its mouth is and decide on what exactly to do with the expressway. Its future is something that must be decided – not just for now, but for the estimated 100-year lifecycle of either of the main options on the table. Councillors should decide what’s best for the city and stick to it. And if possible, find a way to make sure future councils don’t fiddle with it like they have for decades on the public transit file. Transportation as a whole in Toronto is a complex issue. It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking public transit or highways. If the Gardiner decision is well-balanced, perhaps transportation in Toronto stands a chance.

Petition calls for Sheppard LRT ‘now’ Bus riders have mixed views on whether subway or LRT is best option

iding the Sheppard 85 bus on a pleasant afternoon last week, it was hard to remember the Sheppard East light-rail transit line, or why it mattered. The province had delayed the project - approved, started, cancelled, resurrected, now shelved again - until sometime “after” 2021. A few TTCriders, members of a transit advocacy group, persuaded some passengers to sign their names to a pro-LRT petition Thursday. But almost as many, though these were the very people who might ride the LRT every weekday, refused to sign. The first, a woman named Anne waiting on the platform at Don Mills Station, said she’d commuted on the Sheppard 85 to and from Meadowvale Road, as far as the LRT would go, for six years. “This is on the street, right? And look at (the congestion) downtown,” she said, declining to give her last name. “Leave the buses and take your time and do the subway.” The activists had better luck with Robert, who also takes the bus to Meadowvale and has done that for 12 years. Sometimes, behind schedule, the TTC driver short turns, he said. “That makes me late for work,” added Robert, who also wouldn’t say his last name but thought the LRT offers more consistency. rail line, once finished, would boost the value of Robert’s condominium, and he concluded “the pros outweigh the cons.” But he said he didn’t know anyone upset to hear the LRT line, once scheduled for completion this year, is delayed again. “People are like creatures of habit,” he explained. Puneet Loiya, another man on the bus, had taken the Sheppard 85 for four months and said the

LRT was more sensible than a subway on Sheppard Avenue East. “Hopefully, It’ll improve my life and get me home faster. It’ll have much more frequency,” Loiya said before getting off at Birchmount Road. “I don’t see any plan (for a subway) right now,” he added. The TTCriders were aware the idea of a Sheppard Subway extension – relentlessly promoted by Toronto’s ex-mayor Rob Ford, and still backed by a number

of Agincourt residents and Scarborough politicians – was seductive, even without a source of funds or a clear destination (Will it go to Markham Road? Scarborough Town Centre?). Slightly-outdated literature the activists handed out (one flyer said Sheppard LRT construction “is slated to resume again in 2017”) warned against the “narrow interests of the ‘subway or nothing’ crowd.”

Members of the group told bus riders the subway wasn’t ever going to happen, but Kingsley Kwok conceded a pro-subway petition would do at least as well on the Sheppard 85 as a pro-LRT one. The LRT project is known quantity, he argued, while promised subways, “everyone will sign, but no one will know what that means.” Kwok and Herman Rosenfeld, another TTCrider, finished their trip with 15 signatures between them. A second activist pair had 36. Rosenfeld said getting the province to build the Finch West LRT, starting in 2017, had been easier. “The pro-auto lobby (on Finch West) was older, weaker, smaller. But I think here it’s different,” he said before the few remaining other passengers left the bus at Kingston Road, and the Sheppard 85 continued nearly empty to Rouge Hill GO Station, where it would turn around to head to Don Mills. The pro-subway forces haven’t given up on Sheppard, though. Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Jim Karygiannis said he’ll be getting a petition going. “We have to mobilize,” he said last month, and though council recently told him to “take a hike” on a motion supporting a subway extension, Karygiannis said there could be a different result one day. “I’m hopeful I’ll be able to change people’s minds,” the former MP said last month, adding, “2018 is not too far away.”

‘Something’ has to give between subway extension and SmartTrack: councillor DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Questions about new routing and escalating costs associated with the Scarborough subway could lead to yet another debate about subways versus light rail in the city’s east end before the year’s end. “It’s going to be a very interesting meeting in September,” said Beaches-East York Councillor Janet Davis last Thursday, after reviewing a councillor-only presentation document on the Scarborough subway, Smart Track and other transit

improvements. “Council approved a certain alignment with a fixed cost,” said Davis. “Something is going to have to give.” The document, put together by city planning staff, provides a more focussed picture of how the city might construct both Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack heavy rail system through Scarborough and also the extension of the BloorDanforth subway line to replace the Scarborough Rapid Transit line. The report notes the route originally approved by Toronto Council in 2013 and costing $3.56 billion, will

run too close to the SmartTrack line, along the Hydro corridor. Two better routes — further east along either Bellamy Road or Markham Road and then curving back so it can serve the Scarborough Town Centre — will come at a price premium of hundreds of millions of dollars. There is also a possibility that the three-stop line will garner an additional stop, which could also add to the price. The Toronto Transit Commission estimates that lengthening the route will cost $180 million a kilometre, and additional stations will cost

$200 million each. Councillors who supported the plan originally could be having second thoughts. “When City Council made its decision around the subway, the Smart Track idea was not in play,” said St. Paul Councillor Joe Mihevc. “I think that that changes the math here quite dramatically.” Mihevc said he supported the original $3.56 billion plan but would have difficulty supporting an expanded plan when it comes to council along with Smart Track in October and November. Toronto-Danforth Councillor

Paula Fletcher said she was also concerned that the Toronto Transit Commission was “lowballing” the cost of building the subway extension, which in previous reports was estimated at $300 million a kilometre. She said she wasn’t sure what she would vote against: Smart Track, or the Scarborough subway. “Council may have to reconsider the Scarborough subway or reconsider our commitment to SmartTrack. I don’t know why it’s a given that we are going to Smart Track. At least we have a decision on the Scarborough subway.”

Tory puts stamp on Board of Health It’s a wonder nobody thought of it sooner. For years, the Toronto Board of Health has been a prickly ball of left-of-centre conscience that regularly rolls into more, shall we say, pragmatically conservative debates at Toronto Council. Part of this is because of the mandate of the board to exclusively concern itself with the health and wellbeing of Torontonians. Part of this is because mayors and their deputies have left the city council appointments to the generally progressive councillors who ask to serve on the board. So when a medical officer of health has suggested pesticides ought to be banned or smoking in public places curtailed or casino gambling is a bad idea, board members have obediently sent that information on to city council where it might be disregarded, but cannot be ignored. You would have thought mayors in the past would have done something about it. Well, maybe not David Miller, who generally found himself in

david nickle the city agreement with the pearlclutchers at public health, but certainly Mel Lastman and Rob Ford ought to have realized this finger-wagging fifth column needed attention. Leave it to Mayor John Tory and his deputy Denzil Minnan-Wong to finally take note, and action. Through a combination of public and city council appointments, the 2014-2018 board of health is shaping up to be a very different beast. On Monday, the board had before it a report from medical officer of health Dr. David McKeown, weighing in on the Gardiner Expressway debate. Tory favours an expensive and controversial plan to rebuild the elevated highway where it connects to the Don Valley Parkway. In a fairly cursory report, McKeown joined various planning and city-building experts in sug-

In the last term, that report would have made its way promptly to council, and it’s not hard to see how: the councillors on the board were Ford opponents such as Raymond Cho, John Filion, Joe Mihevc, Gord Perks, Sarah Doucette and Kristyn Wong-Tam. Cue the replacements this term, where a much smaller progressive rump of Joe Cressy, Mihevc and Doucette are joined by Jon Burnside, Christin Carmichael Grebb and Frances Nunziata, along with a new crew of citizen appointees. This was enough to deepsix that awkward report. The board agreed to send it along to the planning department. But when council debates the Gardiner at its June meeting, the awkward opinion of Toronto’s chief medical officer of health will be off the table. Someone in the new administration has been paying attention.

Two-way traffic is returning to the Queen’s Quay as the revamped roadway gets ready to re-open. Starting this week new traffic signals will operate at several intersections along Queen’s Quay between Bay Street to west of Lower Spadina Avenue which will allow for the return of twoway traffic to the street. The road, which was once referred to as one of North America’s ugliest, has been under construction since 2013 and has undergone a top-to-bottom facelift, including widened sidewalks, relocated streetcar lanes and a new red granite pedestrian promenade. The transitions are expected to take until Wednesday, June 10 to complete and will also include new transit signals for the 509 Harbourfront service.

West line. Over the next two years 127 new cars are expected to join GO’s fleet with improvements scheduled to begin this summer. Part of the plan to increase service is building a new storage facility for the trains in south Etobicoke which, according to the Ministry of Transportation, will provide enough space for six, 12-car trains. Ministry officials say the new vehicles are roomier and have more storage space.

DISTRACTED DRIVER FINES increase Higher fines and demerit points for distracted drivers are part of new road safety legislation passed this week by the Ontario Legislature. The new regulations are a hold-over from the previous term. They include upping distracted driving fines to a minimum of $300 as well as three demerit points. Also for the first time, drivers who open their car doors in the path of an unsuspecting cyclist, also known as “dooring”, will face demerit points in addition to higher fines. The new restrictions are expected to be in place before the end of 2015.

He won’t put the most masqueraders on the road, but Michael Williams may have the biggest heart among band leaders of the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival. For the fifth year, Williams and his crew, D’Regulars Arts and Cultural Group, is working with Toronto Community Housing to reach its young tenants and teach them what he knows. “I go into areas that no other band leader will go to,” he said at his home during an interview this month. “I’m from that kind of area in Trinidad. I live right at the back of Danzig,” he added, referring to a West Hill street that’s seen more than its share of violence in recent years. A band leader for 35 years, he said he teaches so-called “at-risk” youths how to design and build and decorate costumes in the carnival parade

as well as show them what it’s like to manage a band, to “get them involved in the whole spectacle.” Most live in “challenging areas” of Scarborough, and may not have had the focus or guidance to realize their potential, he said. “I believe in these youths. A lot of them are talented in different ways,” Williams added. “All they need is an opportunity to bring it out.” This year, he’s starting a Scarborough Steel Pan Academy which will teach young people to read and play music. The academy will be housed in a TCH building in Southwest Scarborough and be ”a huge undertaking and something all of Scarborough is going to be proud of,” he declared. “The steel pan is a wonder of the world. It was born in Trinidad and Tobago.” More than ever, Toronto’s annual explosion of mas is being made in the industrial spaces of Scarborough.

Eight of the nine bands in this year’s carnival parade are assembling costumes here, with D’Regulars encamped on Eglinton Avenue in the Scarborough Village area. One band’s camp location is still undeclared. D’Regulars, which had its launch on May 16 at a restaurant on Lawrence Avenue East, remains one of the carnival’s smaller bands. In what is partly an annual competition for honours and popularity, it’s hard to match the numbers of masqueraders put up by the largest camps, those led by Marcus Eustace, Louis Saldenah, Jamaal Magloire and Dexter Seusahai. But Williams draws satisfaction from knowing he’s helping to build up a community and that youth he’s worked with in the past, all of them born in Canada, are coming back. “They will take over in a few years,” he said, expressing hope today’s band leaders will pass the baton to a new

generation. In Toronto, Williams said, you can go to the nearest bus stop and meet someone from anywhere in the world. And if young people can take advantage of the city’s public education system - which Williams maintains is one of the best - then “all you need here in this city is ambition.” Williams stresses his mas camp - which this year will produce costumes in the bright, vibrant colours of Caribbean national flags - is open to volunteers from all walks of life, whether they have experience in making mas or not. “It’s a creative thing, and it’s a joyful thing. If you like creativity, and you’re into arts, you will love that,” he said. “If you haven’t been involved in the creative process, then we wiill teach you.”

The group will bring their objections next week to Mitzie Hunter, their local MPP, who said the students’ health and safety are her priority.

‘Informed choices’ “We need to ensure they have the information they need to make informed choices about their health,” said Hunter, who represents Scarborough-Guildwood. The current curriculum, taught since 1998, is “dangerously out of date,” she said, arguing parents, before removing children, should read the new lesson plan online first to “make sure their

decision is well-informed.” The Liberal government, Hunter said, respects the role of parents, who are always free to teach children what they want at home, but she added consultations on the curriculum were the largest of their kind, involving 4,000 parents, roughly one at each Ontario school. More than 70 healthrelated groups, as well as 20 imams and other Muslim leaders, were also consulted, she said. Chadwick said parents at Cornell, which is near Markham and Scarborough Golf Club roads, did not think one parent at each school could speak for all of them. “I can’t disagree with that,” he added. Chadwick, however, said the world has changed sig-

nificantly, and the curriculum needed an update. He doubted, however, that public school teachers can be trained to teach the new curriculum properly by September, and said Toronto’s public board should take the necessary time to ensure they can. Protests planned “It’s not going to be there on the first day of school,” Chadwick predicted. Curriculum opponents, part of the “We Say No” movement, are calling on social media for a “family sit-in and march” this Sunday at Queen’s Park, and protests in front of MPPs’ offices on Friday.

Woman dies after being struck by car at Lawrence/McCowan An elderly woman is dead after she was struck by a car while crossing the road in Scarborough Tuesday afternoon. The collision, which involved two cars and the pedestrian, happened at McCowan Road and Lawrence Avenue at 12:35 p.m. The senior was pronounced dead on scene, and another person was taken to hospital. Both vehicles involved remained at the scene. One, a white Chevrolet Cobalt, had a shattered windshield. A Scarborough man faces four more charges after an additional victim came forward in a child sex assault

investigation. Police allege a six-year-old boy attending the Summer Islamic School that runs out of the Danforth Islamic Centre (3018 Danforth Ave.) was approached by a man within the building after class had ended May 3. A suspect allegedly showed the boy a sexually explicit video and sexually assaulted him. On May 14, police arrested 69-year-old Dewan Syed Mosiur Reza and charged him with making available sexually explicit material to a person under 16 for a specific criminal offence, invitation to sexual touching of a person under 16, sexual assault and sexual interference with a person under 16. Police believe Reza had access to children at two home day cares: one in the Crescent Town neighbourhood between 1999 and 2009 and the other at 155 Heale Ave. from 2009. The Heale home day care

has since been shut down, police said. “It’s a family-run licensed day care, and the accused was residing at those addresses,” Det. Const. Conrad Wong told reporters during a Monday afternoon news conference. Police now also allege that between January 2003 and December 2007, a boy who was then seven to 11 years old attended a home day care in Crescent Town and was sexually assaulted. “It is further alleged that some time between January 2007 and December 2011, when the child was between 11 and 15 years old, he attended 155 Heale Ave. where the accused showed the child a sexually explicit video and the accused proceeded to sexually assault the boy again,” Wong said. Late last month, police said Reza was re-arrested and additionally charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual interference.

Councillors back hybrid C option for the Gardiner DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s budget chief Gary Crawford and Parks and Environment Committee Chair Michelle Berardinetti told reporters they are standing with Mayor John Tory and supporting the socalled “hybrid option” for dealing with the Gardiner Expressway. The two councillors — both part of Tory’s inner circle — made the announcement at a noon-hour press conference outside their offices at City Hall, mere hours after Tory had told reporters he believed rebuilding the elevated portion of the highway was necessary to maintain the economy. Berardinetti and Crawford both said they believed the congestion that would be caused should the Gardiner Expressway east of Jarvis be

torn down would stifle the city’s economy and harm the environment. “The Gardiner’s connection to the Don Valley Parkway is what completes Toronto’s ring road (of the Gardiner, 427, 401 and Don Valley Parkway),” said Crawford. “Removing that continuous link would drastically increase congestion.” Crawford said maintaining the Gardiner as an elevated highway all the way to the Don Valley Parkway was the “fiscally responsible” thing to do, and suggested once ongoing maintenance was taken out of the cost factor, it would only be a $94 million premium on the option to remove it. And he argued in this case, “fiscal responsibility” included maintaining smooth traffic movement at the base of the Don Valley Parkway. “When we’re looking at

being fiscally responsible we have to balance everything out,” he said. “That includes when we’re looking at commute times, at having a continuous route across the city.” Berardinetti, meanwhile, said in addition to being fiscally responsible, replacing the elevated highway was environmentally responsible because it would mean fewer idling cars. “We need to be looking toward reducing smogcausing pollution,” said Berardinetti. “Taking down the Gardiner will lead to more car congestion and this will lead to more greenhouse gases.” Council will vote on the matter at its meeting next week.

The summer break provides many memorable moments, and writing about them is a good way to record those memories and practice writing skills at the same time. Parents tend to focus on their children’s reading and math skills, overlooking that writing is an education fundamental. It’s fast becoming the forgotten ‘R’. This is unfortunate, as writing is an important part of every facet of education, not just in English class. Writing proficiency can have a major impact on other subject areas too. Summer vacation provides an excellent opportunity for children to explore their creative writing skills. Province asked to intervene in TTC bus garage dispute >>>from page 1 Coalition Against the McNicoll Bus Garage know they’ll need Ontario environment minister Glen Murray to personally intervene if they are to stop the plan. That’s a long shot at best given Toronto City Council, as well as the Toronto Board of Health, have already endorsed the project and dismissed the health and safety concerns expressed by the coalition. On Tuesday, the coalition held one last rally for 150 supporters, imploring them all to write Murray and demand he stop the garage from becoming a reality. “We have asked (minister) Murray to intervene,” said coalition co-organizer Patricia Sinclair. “No transit agency should be able to build a bus garage to the detriment of seniors.” MP for ScarboroughAgincourt Arnold Chan also appeared at the event at the Brighton Event Centre on McNicoll Avenue, promising to lobby his fellow Liberal Murray. But because the project doesn’t violate federal transport regulations, he admitted there’s little he can do to stop the garage. “There is really no capacity at the end of day to invoke a federal environmental assessment,” said Chan. “We don’t have jurisdiction.” Chief among the coalition’s

concerns is the presence of TTC buses in the area entering and leaving the facility via revamped Redlea Avenue, which is undergoing construction to widen and extend the road from Steeles Avenue to McNicoll. The coalition warns this will create traffic congestion in an already built-up area where there are also new condominium towers under construction. But the 90-page EA report and accompanying appendixes states the TTC intends for most buses to access the garage during off-peak times when local traffic is light, and there’s enough projected road space on an extended Redlea to accommodate both buses and regular traffic. Another concern expressed by the coalition is the presence of diesel emissions from 250 buses which will be stored on site. Nelson Wong from the Mon Sheong Court residence, at 2020 McNicoll, said the decision will drastically affect some 200 seniors living there, many of whom suffer from respiratory disease and other chronic ailments. But after carrying out air quality, emissions and other health risk assessments following a city council request, Chief Health Officer David McKeown found no red flags, as he indicated in a recent

letter sent to TTC CEO Andy Byford. “In all cases, our assessment finds that the impact resulting from the future operation of the proposed McNicoll Bus Garage would be minimal and it is unlikely that any adverse impacts on human health would be encountered,” writes McKeown in the letter dated May 15. The group also complains the TTC has failed to adequately consult with the local community on the bus garage plans. TTC spokesperson David Nagler told The Mirror in February there were two separate public meetings as required by the EA, and the transit commission had also agreed to meet with Mon Sheong representatives to discuss the residence’s concerns. The EA report also notes the TTC agreed, in response to community concerns, to make changes to its designs for the facility including relocating diesel fuel tanks as far away as possible from the GO Transit rail line located adjacent to the site, preserving a rare English Oak tree located at the western boundary of the site and developing a noise mitigation plan.

Enbridge pipeline work underway in north Scarborough MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Pipeline work will cut through north Scarborough this summer, as Enbridge Gas continues the largest upgrade of its natural gas distribution system in 20 years. The Enbridge GTA Project, turning south from Markham, will build a pipe along a utility corridor west of Warden

Avenue until it reaches a regulation facility just north of Sheppard Avenue East. “We can’t give specific construction dates as the schedules are always subject to change. “I can tell you that the majority of the Scarborough construction should be completed by October 2015,” Enbridge spokesperson Jamie Anne Vaughan said

this week. The project, mostly using open-cut construction, but with some directional drilling, was approved by the Ontario Energy Board on January 30, 2014. It will cross Steeles Avenue, Huntsmill Boulevard, Huntingdale Boulevard, Pinemeadow Boulevard, Collingsbrook Boulevard and Bridlewood Boulevard.

One area of “active” construction in Scarborough started last month from the south end of Bamburgh Park, south of Huntsmill, to McNicoll Avenue. A second “active” area stretches from Collingsbrook Road to south of Bridlewood

Boulevard and the company’s Jonesville station off Wicklow Drive. Enbridge said the station helps “to measure and regulate the pressure and flow of natural gas through our pipelines to downtown Toronto.”

Zoo staff and a visiting Chinese expert inseminated the sleeping female panda with sperm from her male cagemate Da Mao at 2 a.m. on May 13. At 11 a.m. they used the leftovers from Da Mao as well as thawed sperm of two other males, which had been flown in from China. Which means if Er Shun is pregnant all three males could be the father. “How will they both react?” Giorgio Mammoliti, a member of the zoo’s management board, asked after hearing this from staff on Wednesday. May 27. “Will the male know it’s somebody else’s panda?” The North York councillor was assured Da Mao won’t know or care. Pandas are solitary in the wild. Maria Franke, curator of mammals, said the zoo - which, though “newbies to the panda world” was

Torch relay fans the flames of Pan Am excitement SAM JURIC sjuric@insidetoronto.com The journey has been long for the Pan Am flame; it has travelled over land and sea from Avenue of the Dead in Teotihuacan, Mexico where it was first lit in a traditional ceremony to Canadian soil. Armed with umbrellas, throngs of Canadians cheered as representatives of the First Nations of Canada canoed toward the shore of Lake Ontario carrying the Pan Am flame Saturday morning. It is here in Toronto’s downtown core that the flame began its journey across Canada, sparking the excitement of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games within Canadians. “Being here at the torch arrival ceremony is like seeing a glimpse of history for my kids,” said North York’s Sam Remtulla. tried to do things differently here.” The welcoming ceremony for the torch was moved inside the Harbourfront Centre where spectators huddled around to

hear Premier Kathleen Wynne and Tory usher in the 2015 Pan Am Games. The Sacred Spirit Dancers were invited to support the arrival of the torch that was

carried to shore by the representatives of First Nations. “For First Nations to take a pivotal role in this event is imperative for our homeland of Ontario,” said Garry Sault, former chief of First Nations Metis, Mississaugas New Credit. “Toronto is the heartbeat of commerce in Ontario. Showing our role as First Nations is very important.” The welcoming ceremony showcased the talents of the Obeah Opera as they sang the national anthem. “It is the burning passion of the Games that unites us,” said Elizabeth Dowdswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in her welcoming speech. The ceremony acknowledged the 1967 Pan Am frontrunners who were not given the opportunity to complete their journey of carrying the torch from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Winnipeg, Manitoba by welcoming them as the honoured guests of the event. “It takes me back to 1967 but

brings satisfaction, completion to the journey we started,” said Frank Harper, one of the frontrunners on 1967. “This fosters co-operation between First Nations and Canada. This is very emotional but very good at the same time,” said Bill Chippeway, another frontrunner of 1967. As the ceremony began to wind down and the party in the Distillery District was about to begin, the mystery first torchbearer of the 2015 Pan Am Games was revealed. There were resounding cheers as Olympic gold medalist, trampoline gymnast Rosie MacLennan lit the torch to commence the relay. The celebrations continued in the Distillery District where the final torch bearer astronaut Chris Hadfield – the first Canadian to walk in space – lit the community cauldron.
