Local woman to carry Pan Am Games torch CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com The Pan Am Torch was unveiled Monday at the Ontario Science Centre along with the names of the first torchbearers who will be carrying the flame across the country. “It will be seen by millions. It will bring Canadians together,” said Saad Rafi, CEO of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games (TO2015). “These Games are going to be special.” About 3,000 torchbearers in total are expected to complete, on average, a 200-metre segment during the 41-day torch relay. Dignitar ies in attendance included Toronto Mayor John Tory, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, and TO2015 Board Chair David Peterson, who each announced one of the first nine torchbearers at the event. Tanisha Martinez was selected as one of the 50 inspirational young people to represent the province as a torchbearer. The 22-year-old from Scarborough had previously been recognized

by Toronto Police Services for her heroic act in saving a stabbing victim at an event where she administered first aid. “I’m very lucky to be a part of it,”

said Martinez, who was announced as a torchbearer by the Premier. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.” She added that she hoped to be a

role model for the youth she works with at the camps in the city’s parks and recreation department. Triathlete Simon Whitfield, who won medals in both the Olympic and Pan Am Games, will also be one of the torchbearers as he was in the Vancouver Olympic Games. “I felt so much responsibility for something that was so important,” recalled Whitfield, adding the torch relay really brings a sense of community. Thousands of torchbearers will carry the torch through 130 communities with the relay in Canada starting May 30 and making its final stop on July 10 at the Opening Ceremony of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. Federal minister slams province over Rouge Park MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Ontario tried to put “plants before farmers” by proposing last-minute changes to the Rouge National Urban Park bill, says Federal Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq. After the Conservative majority in Canada’s Senate defeated amendments proposed by the province’s Liberal government, Aglukkaq added she would not “shut down (the) farming industry” in the park to support the changes. “Farmers come first in our position,” the minister is quoted as saying on the Facebook page of Oak Ridges-Markham MP Paul Calandra, parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The provice is refusing to hand over 9,000 acres of its land in the Rouge River watershed to the park

unless the federal Conservative government changes the legislation, which the House of Commons has already passed, to “meet or exceed” past plans for the Rouge Park. Opposition MPs and senators were involved in talks this week to reach compromise on a bill, C-40, which Ontario and several environmental groups could support. The negotiations failed, and a Senate committee recommended no changes to the bill at a hearing last Thursday. Ontario’s position, supported by the environmentalists, is that Ottawa should make environmental protection the primary mission of the park, past plans for which envisioned the renaturalization of large areas farmed by park tenants. Ottawa’s position is the ecology of the park, run until now by an informal partnership of groups and governments, will benefit greatly

from its large planned investment as well as stronger legal enforcement by wardens, but farming in the park should not be reduced. farming Calandra, who counts some of the tenant farmers as constituents, argued the proposed amendments confirm Ontario’s Liberals “want to kill farming in the Rouge Valley.” In his message, Calandra said he expects the Senate to pass the bill before summer. “We will create a National Urban Park in the Rouge Valley for the people of the GTA with or without the Ontario Liberal government.” Ontario, however, does keep possession of most of the Rouge Valley area studied for the park, and is refusing to budge on handing over that land. Ontario Infrastructure Minister

Brad Duguid expressed his disappointment Thursday with the “obstinate” federal government. “The amendments we put forward protect the environment while promoting a vibrant agricultural community,” Duguid, who is MPP for Scarborough Centre, added in a statement. “However, I am confident that Ontario will be home to a thriving Rouge National Urban Park, when we have a federal government that is willing to be a true partner.” The federal plan for a Rouge NUP under Parks Canada has supporters at the municipal level, including Scarborough councillors Glenn De Baeremaeker and Ron Moeser, both former activists who fought to create the present park.

Diversity Our Strength Diversity Our Strength – it’s Toronto’s motto. It’s also the name of the newest Metroland Media Toronto online portal. Launched this week, www. insidetoronto.com/diversity is a growing compilation of news, events and resources dedicated to reaching Toronto’s diverse communities. The city is home to people who speak more than 140 languages, half of Toronto’s population was born outside of Canada and the city is a place where nearly half of residents’ first language is something other than English. “Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world,” said Paul Futhey, project lead and editor with Metroland Media Toronto. “It’s important that we find new ways to present our content to our readers.” Included in the website: w NEWS: Metroland Media Toronto’s news coverage of Toronto’s diverse communities: available in a general feed and also accessible in sections based on world geography. A world news feed is also available. w EVENTS: an events section with photo galleries of recent cultural celebrations as well as links to upcoming multicultural events. w RESOURCES: a section that includes some helpful tips for newcomers to the city, key statistics and a call for directory submissions. As the site grows, we’re looking for significant community involvement, whether it’s news tips, event submissions, or community organizations and cultural centres creating online profiles to be part of a directory. “Our goal is always to find ways to better connect people to their communities,” Futhey said. “We want the community to be a part of this.” Questions? column

Breaking into song on March Break Questions I was at a loss for words heading into March Break, but as luck would have it, not at loss for song. My name is Jamie and I’m here to say, I almost didn’t get this column in the paper today. I mean it, folks. I’m not making this up. It’s not my usual silly poetic license stuff. I can send you a selfie with me crossing my heart. I was getting nowhere fast, right from the start. I was at my wit’s end, I tell ya. Didn’t know what to do. Not having a topic by now was something new. And taunting me was the blank screen on my Mac. There was nary a word on it – that’s a fact, Jack. To be honest, I couldn’t even remember my name. I had no idea how to get in the game. Most perplexing of all, is this is the ideal week, and I’m not saying that tongue in cheek. March Break is a treasure

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY trove of topics aplenty. No way I was expecting to come up empty. Why would I, with so many great festivals in store? And bustling malls filled with entertainment galore. Then there’s the Ontario Science Centre and the zoos. Ripley’s Aquarium, the ROM, how could I lose? So I sought inspiration in the neighbourhood. Visited every rink, field and park I possibly could. Hopped on the subways, buses and streetcars. Even headed to Yorkville to reach for the stars. Checked out YouTube. Called my nephew on Skype. Googled and Twittered away long into the night. But after looking hither, thither and yon and back again,

I still couldn’t put pen to paper or paper to pen. I had a mental block bigger than the CN Tower. And the seconds were ticking down to the very last hour. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five ... ah what’s the use? No way to make it in time, I needed an excuse, Like my dog ate the column. They’ll swallow that line. Or the server was down. That works every time. Then a light bulb went off inside my head. Why agonize over this? Why not sing about it instead? So, I put two and two together and just like that, Came up with the I Barely Beat My March Break Deadline Rap. Oh yeahhhhh. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at jamie.wayne@sympatico.ca

remain on sex ed course

To the editor: As a retired teacher I have been most interested to hear about the new course for sex education. However, there has been no mention how this will be implemented with the present financial shortfall. Will teachers be taken out of their classes to attend courses for teaching these new aspects or will they merely be confronted with the new syllabus with instructions to “teach this”? Also, who will be responsible for the teaching in high schools: The home room teacher? The phys-ed teacher? Will the students in elective programs be covered? There are still many questions to be answered and explained. Marian Yorke

U of T Prof. Paul Hess, concluded building SmartTrack and the Scarborough Subway together - with pairs of stations two kilometres apart on the subway’s McCowan Road alignment - “would be serving largely the same potential riders.” But building John Tory’s commuter rail line and the Bloor-Danforth subway extension without the Sheppard East LRT would be a particularly bad idea, Sorensen said. “That is the worst possible outcome.” Death or a re-shelving of the LRT isn’t that unlikely a prospect. A pair of University of Toronto Scarborough professors have concluded that the best transit option for Scarborough would be to build the Sheppard East LRT before the Scarborough subway extension or any SmartTrack projects. Currently only buses run along Sheppard east of Don Mills Road.

construction of SmartTrack, which is partly dependent on development its improved rail service would encourage. Insisting he’s not trying to build a case for one particular transit solution in Scarborough – though that’s what he appeared to be doing – Sorensen said the LRT scores higher than the other, more expensive projects on how many riders it can expect to serve and how much re-development it could produce. “It makes sense to just go ahead and build it now,” he said. “I think it’s important to actually make these decisions based on evidence.” Sorensen and Hess’s report hints at one reason

why Scarborough has seen little of the building boom Toronto has had over the last decade: Scarborough’s subdivisions, they said, were built to “resist” change. There are strong rules against adding density to Scarborough’s neighbourhoods of singlefamily homes. Add to that “reversed lot housing,” a development style which lines arterial roads with fences and has left much of Finch and Steeles Avenue in Scarborough “sterile,” they said, and 80 per cent of Scarborough is unlikely to see any intensification for decades. Exceptions are Eglinton and Sheppard avenues

and other east-west arterials, Lawrence Avenue and Kingston Road. The report says the land available for development along the Sheppard East route, 10.2 kilometres from Victoria Park to Morningside Avenue, makes the line able to bring much-needed reinvestment to 422.5 acres, while the subway extension could development 207 acres along its 7.5-kilometre length and SmartTrack can spark growth on 373.4 acres along 12.6 kilometres. If people are willing to walk 800 metres to a transit station, as Sorensen and Hess assume, then the LRT can expect 45,398 potential residents as riders and pro-

vide walking access to 7,167 jobs. SmartTrack, assuming seven-stops in Scarborough, could expect 31,803 residents to walk in, and reach 4,777 jobs. The subway extension, assuming three stops and the McCowan alignment, would be reached by 10,635 resident walkers and be in reach of 2,803 jobs, the report said. Local councillors supporting the subway would certainly dispute some of these figures, and the light-rail route was opposed from the start by Agincourt residents who say it will do economic damage to their neighbourhoods because it runs on the surface of

Sheppard. John Tory, Toronto’s new mayor, has declared the debate closed on whether to build the subway extension - Hess and Sorensen present two other LRT lines as another option - as have local MPPs. Sorensen conceded the report would perhaps have been of more effect had it been released earlier, but said Tory’s SmartTrack, which is still under study, provides an important new element for study. Hess and Sorensen didn’t analyze other possible subway corridors – five were presented to the public –but Sorensen noted Toronto council did approve a route in 2013 with three stops and a McCowan corridor. Members of a Stakeholder Advisory Group for the subway project were told at the group’s first meeting last month corridors to the east of McCowan, which would make the extension longer, were added as possibilities “to determine how the extension will interact with SmartTrack.” It was mentioned some subway corridors have more development potential than others, and support was expressed for adding a fourth station at Danforth Road and Eglinton, as well as stations at Centennial College’s Progress campus and at Markham and Ellesmere roads, which are possible if using some alignments. “The council direction mentioned three stations but if more are beneficial we will consider more stations,” minutes show the stakeholder group was told. Public meetings presenting a preferred subway corridor are expected in May, by which time modeling of potential SmartTrack ridership is also expected.

higher minimum wage would mitigate the income inequality that is degrading the city. The $90 million in gas tax money would go a long way to improving and just maintaining the sputtering Toronto Transit Commission system. Poverty and transportation have been widely identified as pressing issues for Torontonians, and Tory has put both of those things at the top of his to-do list. Tory and Mulcair met Monday at Toronto City Hall, the day following Mulcair’s speech. The two faced TV cameras and reporters immediately afterward, comfortably side-by-side and clearly on the same page. Our mayor was generous in his praise for the policy, but careful. He noted the gas tax promise was one that built on transit funding that had been initiated by the Liberals and enshrined

by the Conservative government. It was more, and that was good. And it was hard not to like that notion that Toronto was the most important place in Canada. Still, Tory wouldn’t endorse – and he would likely be foolish to do so. Mulcair and the NDP are the Official Opposition in only the most tenuous sense; the party gained its unprecedented influence under the irreplaceable leadership of the late Jack Layton. The promises Mulcair made are more powerful as ideas right now than they are as likely outcomes. But that is all right. Mulcair has put forward the best and most reasonable federal agenda for cities since another unlikely prime minister, Paul Martin, almost a decade ago. And that gives Tory some leverage in an arena where until recently it seemed as though he had very little.

SAVE

It is a good thing former Ontario Progressive Conservative party leader John Tory is taking the non-partisan part of his job so seriously. Otherwise, his meeting with federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair would have been very awkward indeed. Mulcair came to Toronto early this week bearing gifts – or at least the promise of gifts. The leader of Canada’s Official Opposition told a crowd at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre that Toronto was his and his party’s favourite: that the city and the region were the most important in Canada, and that money and attention would flow here from a federal NDP government. To specifics: the NDP would create 164,000 affordable daycare spots in the Greater Toronto Area over the next eight years; the minimum wage would be set federally at $15 an hour; and the GTA would receive $90 million a year more in funding from an increased share of the gas tax. This is powerful stuff. Affordable daycare and a

Prepare for the worst – In the event of a power outage, make sure to: keep the fridge closed, put frozen items outside and have some fun activities ready to go (card games are always popular). In addition, the Government of Canada provides weather alerts that provide more information on dangerous conditions in all areas of Canada. Be sure to check them out on their website. Remember, heavy snowfall and freezing rain make for poor driving conditions. Even if the necessary precautions have been implemented, accidents do happen. ven though frigid winter temperatures may be somewhat behind us, we’re not free of the winter snowflakes just yet. March has traditionally hosted some winter storms in the past which have crept up on us as we all look ahead to sunny days. It is still important to keep your wits about you. Sandra Zisckind, Diamond and Diamond Personal Injury Lawyers, provides some tips to prepare for a winter storm: 1. Pick up basic survival items – make sure to stock up essentials in order to survive without leaving your house for a few days, including: flashlights (and batteries), candles, radio, non-perishable food, bottled water, blankets and warm clothing, matches, medications, and fully-charged cell phone. 2. Keep warm – seal up any drafts, dress in layers, make sure to cover your head (hood or hat), cuddle up and stay under covers. 3. Stay up-to-date – keep the radio or television on to get the latest weather updates, follow national and local disaster agencies 4. Winterize your house – furnace maintenance (replace filters), check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, clear the fireplace, shut down outdoor faucets and

Parents Alliance of Ontario concerned by plans >>>from page 1 school trustee for the area, said people protesting the new curriculum came mostly from outside Scarborough. They came into the school at a point when presenters had described coming changes to the province’s Health and Physical Education lessons and it was nearly time to answer audience questions, she said. “They started yelling and screaming at the public health nurse,” who was speaking at the time, Wong recalled on Monday. Though he said he didn’t encourage protesters to go in, Kevin Xu said he organized a demonstration outside because he’s president of the Parents Alliance of Ontario, a group “strongly against the

new radical sex education curriculum.” Xu, a father of two, conceded that “at a certain age, some knowledge (of sex) is right,” but said the curriculum frustrates parents because it introduces sexual subjects to children too early. ‘Cannot accept it’ “We cannot accept it,” he said on Tuesday, adding it’s not appropriate, for example, that Grade 6 students should be taught masturbation is “something many people do” and find pleasurable, or for students in Grade 7 to learn vaginal and anal sex can be “enjoyable”. Xu, who ran for city councillor in Agincourt’s Ward 39 in 2010, dismissed the argument

children will learn about these subjects anyway from the internet or the street, without proper instruction at school. Most won’t, he said. “The parents have responsibility to limit children’s access to this kind of internet,” just as they would limit their exposure to violent films, Xu said. Sam Sotiropolous, the former public school trustee for Ward 20 in Agincourt, was also at Thursday’s meeting – an information session on the curriculum Wong promised local trustees she would hold – recording the moment Scarborough-Rouge River MPP Bas Balkissoon declared the meeting over, and shaking hands. “They needed to get the message and this is sending

the message,” Sotiropoulos says in his You-Tube video after the meeting ends. Sexting Changes to the curriculum, last updated in 1998 – before, Wong said, “sexting” and cyberbullying became recognized terms – would begin in September from grades 1 to 3, when children would learn the proper names of body parts and “an initial understanding of how their bodies work.” The province’s education ministry says this means “they can communicate clearly and ask for help in case of illness, injury or abuse.” Older students will learn about sexual consent as well as the “social, emotional and

legal implications of posting or forwarding sexually explicit photos (sexting).” Wong said the curriculum, which she believes most of the protesters Thursday had not read, won’t cause younger children to become “sexualized.” Research shows giving information to children early leads to less risky behaviour and healthier choices, she said. Not a secret Wong added the curriculum was not changed in secret, as the ministry consulted with representatives of 4,000 school councils. Annie Kidder of People for Education, which has been Ontario’s most influential parent group, has supported

the revisions, and Wong said parents and teachers have thanked her for updating the curriculum, which would include material already taught in other Canadian provinces. “We’re behind. We’re teaching a generation of kids outdated information,” Wong said. Xu, however, said one person cannot represent the views of every parent at a school. The province should ask every parent what they want in the sex education curriculum, he said. “Then we will find a solution.”

For Mrs. Potts, it’s missing having a man around the house, for Flo, Hal reminds her of her husband, who isn’t there but she alludes to the fact he was like him and eventually ran off. For Rosemary, he seems to represent each man who turned her down and left her unmarried.

Scarborough Theatre Guild takes audiences back to a simpler time where Labour Day picnics are one of the social highlights of the year and anything could happen. Picnic, by William Inge, is seemingly a light-hearted snapshot of a group of women who live next door to one another, and rely on each other as friends and neighbours. The set beautifully depicts the two homes of the women; one home belongs to Flo (Susan Sanders) and her two daughters Madge and Millie (Lucia Forward, Cara Robinson), and is also a boarding home where school teacher Rosemary (Mickey Brown) lives. Next door is Mrs. Potts (Patricia Byrne), who is a full-time caretaker to her demanding mother.

ignites However, for Madge, Hal is the opposite of Alan, the nice boy her mother thinks she should be with. He ignites a passion in her that makes her feel alive, not just a pretty face. So once it becomes clear that Madge and Hal have a mutual affection for one another, will history repeat itself in a way that a mother dreads? And how can these women finally shed the weight of their past and live for the future? The atmosphere of this show is not sad or happy (although there are moments of both), but there’s an invisible air of heaviness that hovers over these character’s lives. But there is some fun and light moments, especially when Rosemary and her boyfriend Howard (Stephen Flett), who brings bootleg booze to the house, Millie and Hal, have a spontaneous dance party in the yard. And Jones as Hal always brightens the room with his charismatic

It’s 1954 in small-town Kansas, and one morning, a handsome stranger, Hal (Scott Jones), shows up and becomes the hired help for Mrs. Potts, who often takes in strangers to exchange labour for food. He immediately notices Madge, the most beautiful girl in town, who is dating rich college student, Alan (Tyler Tanner). From the start, Hal shows his character, taking off his shirt, relaying his past adventures and expressing his larger-than-life personality. The women are busy preparing for their annual Labour Day picnic, but as the

storytelling. He is perfectly suited to this role. Millie is the beacon of hope and change in this story. She is confident despite not being “the pretty one,” smart and is determined to be who she wants to be. Robinson plays this role with this joy and levity that is enjoyable to watch amongst this sea of conflicted women. Director Larry Westlake excellently leads his cast through this production. The performances in this play show the versatility each actor brings to their roles. Brown shows her duality playing a strong woman one minute, and later, her vulnerability as a single woman. giant risk Forward as Madge also shows her talent playing the pretty one who does as she’s told until she decides to take a giant risk, and Sanders as mom Flo is the epitome of a strong mother until her worst fears are about to be realized. Byrne plays Mrs. Potts with a gentle likeability that is relatable and realistic. This show is a realistic portrayal of women who are doing their best despite the cards life has dealt them, with some light-hearted moments throughout. Picnic runs March 19 and 20 at 8 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on March 21, at the Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd. General admission tickets are $20.

Turn to The Accounting and Tax for US and Canadian tax filing As the deadlines to file your taxes in Canada and the United States are approaching, Canadians are gathering their information to file tax returns. Canadians who hold own property in the United States may not be aware that they are required to file their taxes both in Canada and the US. As the US expects citizens to pay taxes even after they have left the country, Americans living and working in Canada may have a particular challenge determining where and how to file their taxes. Owner and operator of The Accounting and Tax, Mansoor Suhail has been providing accounting, bookkeeping and taxation services since 2001 in Scarborough and throughout the GTA, he is one of few accountants who are enrolled to file in both countries. Well versed in Canada and U.S.A tax filings and consultation he is proud to offer superior service in personal, small business, partnerships and corporations tax issues with full confidence. Suhail is also enrolled to practice before Internal Revenue Service under 31 Code of Federal Regulations PARA 10 (Treasury Department Circular

No. 230). He is also able to handle International tax issues for foreign students, expatriates and foreign corporations. If you own a small business you know how taxing your day to day operations can be, let alone having to worry about your accounting, payroll, bookkeeping and more. Not everyone has the finances to hire someone full time to do this for them in-house but you must remember that this is a very integral part of your business’s success and needs to looked after properly. The Accounting and Tax in Scarborough provides a variety of services to meet the needs of small businesses such as: accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, financial statements, HST Filing, WSIB Filing, Business Registrations, and taxation. The Accounting and Tax is proud to offer valuable knowledge on tax matters and our services are quite affordable. Scarborough Titans tops at OVA’s McGregor Cup The newly formed Scarborough Titans U14 Rage girls volleyball team brought home gold at the Ontario Volleyball Association’s U14 McGregor Cup held in Oshawa recently. The Scarborough girls had already won gold at their first invitational tournament – t h e Ma rk h a m St i n g e r s Invitational – that was held at

the Markham Pan Am Centre earlier this year. At the U14 McGregor Cup, the Scarborough girls competed against teams from Durham, Markham and Toronto. Undefeated The Rage went undefeated, not losing a set until

they competed in the final gold medal game against a Durham team. The Rage lost the first set 21-25, but came back to win the remaining two sets, 25-17 and 15-7. The win entitles the Titans to advance to the next tier in the OVA’s championship division. Team members are head
