Scarborough’s Kingston Road will liven up this Saturday thanks to an arts festival by local high school students. Alice Walter, teacher and coordinator of the second annual Arts on the Road, said, “For one day we are dancing, singing and reading poems and it celebrates students and it celebrates the community.” Since R.H. King Academy is a destination school – kids come from across Scarborough and all over the east end to attend this school, she said, “It’s not so much a community school. And in this way we become a real community school.” “We reach out to feeder schools and we reach out to businesses — they invest in the community around them. It even livens up Kingston Road,” she added “We had people who wrote letters and thanked us. They had no affiliation with the school. They were happy to see this kind of energy on Kingston Road.” She said the letter said: “I never thought I would see Kingston Road in this way.” The free one-day event starts at R.H. King Academy, 3800 St. Clair Ave. E. at 11 a.m., with award-winning poet, >>>KINGSTON, page16

Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate celebrates 50th anniversary Proceeds go toward school scholarship fund Angeline Mair amair@insidetoronto.com Staff and students past and present are invited to the 50th anniversary of Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate Institute in Guildwood. “It will give past and present alumni, faculty and students an opportunity to renew and reconnect with former friends and teachers from years gone by,” said organizing committee member Sandy Wall-Paterson. Public broadcaster journalist and host, Diane Buchner is just one of many well known
Laurier alumni. Scarborough-Guildwood MP John McKay attended the school, as did the late Dennis Simpson, who was a musical theatre actor and host of Polka Dot Door. Business founder of Chick N Joy George Kastanas has roots at the school as does Whitby Mayor Patricia Perkins. Celebrations begin with a pub night on Friday, May 8 , at The Brighton Convention and Event Centre, which is at 2155 McNicoll Ave. Tickets may be purchased in advance for $40 and there will be 50 tickets available at the door
for $50 each. All proceeds from the sale of tickets from the pub night, T-shirts and glasses will be going to the Laurier Scholarship Fund, which was created in 2008. On Saturday, May, 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be time to explore decade rooms, walk the halls, meet old teachers, see photos of friends, classmates and staff and speeches are at 1:30 p.m.

Residents ‘neglected’ again by Sheppard LRT delay: Cho News last week construction of the Sheppard East LRT line is delayed another five or more years was met by indifference from many. There were people committed to stopping the planned light-rail line from Don Mills Station to Morningside Avenue, and it had few political friends. But there still was anger from some that the project, fully-funded by the province and scheduled to start in 2017, will now have to wait until 2021 at least. “Where the hell did this come from?” Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser asked, a day after Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca announced the Sheppard line delay while confirming the Finch West LRT will go ahead. A year ago, Toronto Council was “unequivocal” Sheppard East
would be the next transit project built in the city, and the province’s agency Metrolinx was talking about expanding it further east to the Toronto Zoo, Moeser said. “The province committed to it, the federal government committed to it. It was still there,” added Moeser, whose ward lies at the eastern end of the LRT route. Then, suddenly, the promise of an east-west surface rail line completed by 2020 was gone - and Moeser fears the project may now be dead. “No consultation with the community. Not even a word from our provincial representatives, who said they would fight for transit out this way,” argued the councillor, who said some constituents told him they felt “livid,” or let down. Scarborough residents belonging to the Shepppard Subway Action Coalition likely had the opposite reaction, along with Jim Karygiannis

But on the North York side of the LRT route, Shelley Caroll, who supported the project, expressed her disappointment on Twitter. “Nicely played, Scarborough car drivers,” the Don Valley East councillor said. “Enjoy your gridlock.” Her comments later last week was more measured. Carroll seemed to accept a suggestion the province has cash-flow problems, or couldn’t handle the Sheppard Avenue project while starting work on the SmartTrack commuter rail service and the Bloor-Danforth line subway extension north to Shepppard. If that’s the case, Carroll said, there should be more flexibility in the province’s decision, which postpones the LRT “for a dangerous amount of time.” The councillor hopes to

move the Sheppard project forward again before people “take out napkins and start drawing new plans” for transit in the area. Dreams of replacing a Sheppard LRT with a subway extension, Carroll said, are unrealistic, and having no rapid-transit project at all “is simply not an option.” As for the local subwayboosters, they are “nothing but car drivers,” and governments have almost always failed to ask people who use the transit system what they want, she said. Raymond Cho, another Scarborough councillor, said he’s also disappointed - not because the province delayed the LRT last week but because it didn’t promise a Sheppard subway extension. “Again, Scarborough has been neglected,” said Cho, arguing the delay means no decision for now on which mode of transit is best for

Sheppard. Scarborough’s Liberal MPPs said they would fight for subways, including one on Sheppard, said Cho, who ran unsuccessfully against one during last year’s provincial election. Most of his constituents want a Sheppard subway extension, added Cho, who hopes – despite the absence of billions in necessary funding – the Sheppard extension will be approved and then be continued one day as far east as Pickering. “Often, people say we don’t have the ridership,” he said. “We don’t have the ridership because there’s no subway.” Meanwhile, business owners along much of the LRT route greeted last week’s news with “the usual level of, ‘Oh, well,’” said Ernie McCullough, executive director of the Sheppard East Village Business Improvement Area. improvements, worked three years with Metrolinx and the TTC to minimize disruption from the LRT before Toronto’s former mayor announced in 2010 the project was dead. The LRT was resurrected by city council two years later, but work was delayed until 2017. All the while, small groups of anti-LRT activists campaigned against it. “You’ve got these people agitating for a subway, and nobody agitating for LRT,” said McCullough, who said the merchant group will work with whatever the politicians eventually decide to do. Brenda Thompson, however, a local transit advocate, said the province has “dropped the ball” on the LRT. “They’ve delayed it so many times now, we’re very doubtful that they’re even going to build it,” she said.

Know your city with Heritage Toronto tours W
hether you’re a resident or a tourist, how much do you know about the City of Toronto? Let’s go one step further: how much do you know about the city’s rich history? The answers vary from a lot to very little; however, even those who know a lot about Toronto could certainly use a refreshing experience. So with that in mind, now is the time to take one of the many guided tours offered by Heritage Toronto, slated to run through to Sunday, Oct. 4, and get a city refresher. From Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York to all the pockets in the downtown core, the city is alive with a rich and diverse history, making any day or weekend tour an experience every Torontonian should have. “Heritage Toronto’s fun and our view informative tours give citizens the chance to see Toronto’s neighbourin a way they never have Head outside hoods before,” said Heritage Toronto and explore executive director, Francisco Alvarez. Toronto If you’re looking to get started quickly, May is Asian Heritage Month with tours that take you through Chinatown, Korea Town, and the city’s Filipino community. In Etobicoke you can take in the ‘Hurricane Hazel Revisited’ tour. The ‘Guild Park’ tour talks about the long and rich artistic history of the southeast Scarborough area. In North York, why not take in the ‘Downsview Park’ tour? City neighbourhoods are also the focus of tours such as ‘Leslieville: Orange & Green’. There are also bike tours, music history tours, and tours such as ‘Before Toronto’ that take participants on an archaeological bus tour of the city’s first 13,000 years. Spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner – even fall has tours to offer – so why not take full advantage of our great city – voted the No. 1 place to live in the world to live by The Economist magazine. Toronto has so much to offer, including some fascinating history that’s well worth learning more about. So head out and experience Toronto in ways you’ve never experienced before. column
It’s official: spring has finally sprung During the winter, whining about the temperature had become so contagious it seemed like just about everybody in my neighborhood was hiding inside because of the cold. Heck, I saw a tumbleweed roll down my street it was so empty. I mean that. An actual tumbleweed. I should know. I was the one who tossed it. I did it many times, in fact. It was just me and that old tumbleweed all by our little lonesomes for all of February and most of March. I was getting pretty good at rolling that sucker, too, I must say. I had a mean knuckler that would have made R.A. Dickey envious. I had a deceptive slider that would have given Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion fits. I had a mesmerizing change up, a wicked curve
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY ball and a nasty fast ball. There would be no calls to the bullpen to replace me, no siree. I was in it for the long haul. I was the starter and the closer all rolled into one. My exploits did not go unnoticed. I was being followed closely on Sportsnet, TSN and ESPN. Fans all over the world were downloading my app. I had gone viral on YouTube. There was talk of a duet with Miley. The Donald was calling to talk to me about being on Celebrity Apprentice. Yeah, life was good, alright. Alas, nothing lasts forever. Before long that wimpy tumbleweed started whining it was too cold for him,
too, and he disappeared inside along with everyone else. It was like a ghost town around here after that, I tell ya. Then when spring got off to a late start it was more of the same, barren feeling outside. The flowers refused to come out. The early birds slept in. The squirrels were interested in gathering dust, not nuts. To add insult to injury? Even the owls didn’t give a hoot. Then seemingly out of nowhere, temperatures picked up dramatically this week and have actually passed the seasonal averages and suddenly everyone and everything has come out of hibernation. The flowers are finally starting to make an appearance. The early birds are giving those worms a run for their money. The squirrels are
collecting overtime. And the dogs are barking up a storm. But it’s the people who are really standing out. I honestly can’t remember it ever being so crowded in these parts. It looks good on the neighbourhood to see so many out and about. Best of all, those winter scowls are nowhere to be seen. Everybody is smiling. Well, not everyone. The tumbleweed seems a little down in the dumps with nothing to do anymore. Poor guy. So, if you’ll excuse, I’ll take him to Tim Hortons for a tumble tumble. That’ll snap him out of it in no time. Police in Scarborough are warning the public about an increase in distraction thefts and gold chain robberies. In the past month, three people from the South Asian community were robbed of their gold necklaces within the boundaries of 43 Division, in southeast Scarborough. In the same period, there were nine distraction thefts reported in Scarborough. Constables Julie Campbell and Paul Rowe, both of 43 Division, are working with auxiliary officers to raise awareness of the thefts and robberies in an effort to prevent them. “Our goal would be to let people know that these things are happening because ultimately the people themselves, the citizens, are their own best defence,” Campbell said. “It’s about maintaining your personal space and just being cognizant that this kind of stuff happens.” Police are seeing four different distraction theft techniques: n The flat tire: The victim is told he/she has a flat tire. While the victim looks at the tire with a suspect, a second suspect steals the victim’s purse or wallet. n Jewelry switch: The victim is asked for directions in a busy parking lot. As a thank you, the victim is given jewelry. When the costume jewelry is applied, the victim’s real gold jewelry is removed. n Scattering coins: A woman drops her purse in a mall, scattering coins. A young girl assists Slug Information: Lastman’s her “mother” in picking upBad theBoy coins while blocking theinpath ofinthe victim, who usually Ad Size : 5.145 x 2.857 then tries to help the child. tion while the suspect from the store comes along and steals the victim’s wallet or in some cases just a credit or debit card. “We’ve seen that they will remove the wallet, take out a credit card or a debit card and then put the wallet back,” Campbell said. “What is perhaps amazing is sometimes it takes a while for people to realize that they’ve been victimized.” Campbell said police typically see an increase in robberies and distraction thefts in warmer weather because more people are out and about and their bracelets and necklaces are more visible. Typically three suspects, two females and a male, are involved in a distraction theft though sometimes a child is also used in the crime. “It doesn’t fit your mental image of the robber,” Campbell said. Rowe said the distraction thieves work well as a team, preying on people’s goodwill. “They’re doing this on a very regular basis and using it as a source of income.” Rowe offered one somewhat unusual crime prevention tip: say hello to people around you. “Not only are you being friendly, but you are acknowledging that person that you see them,” he said. “It is not accidental that many large retail stores have a greeter at the front door. They are personalizing people as they come in in a very friendly way...and they’ve seen a reduction in shoplifting.” Police also offer the following advice to avoid becoming a victim: n cover up your jewelry; n walk with confidence; n remain alert and observe people around you; n travel with someone.

Tory needs to talk austerity david nickle the city promised, would come later. Tory also promised to let Toronto know in the coming weeks exactly how he would deal with the 2016 gap between what it costs to run the city as it stands, and the diminishing amount of money actually available to the city. Although Tory would not use the words, it all suggested that in 2016, Torontonians would be looking at some form of service cuts. Given that, it’s understandable that Tory has not yet made good on that one promise, to explain how he’ll balance things. So far, the Tory mayoralty has been a good-news affair. His announcements generally aren’t about telling people what they can’t have, but what he will provide. Very soon, our mayor is
going to have to start talking about more difficult things: strategies for cutting waste in the city’s administrative bureaucracy, cuts and fee increases. Tory has so far avoided talking about fees very much, effectively ruling out the operationally sensitive but politically difficult application of “revenue tools” such as road tolls and consumption taxes. Without a willingness to increase or enact those things, the city is left with only one option: austerity. The city doesn’t have a terrible record on measured austerity. In general, residents seem to like their services and react with a certain amount of organized pique when they are threatened. When the matter finally comes up, it will show even a rough-and-tumble council meeting such as this week’s for the honeymoon that it in fact is.

t the start of the whirling vortex of chaos (otherwise known as the May meeting of Toronto Council) next year’s budget seems very far off. It is not, of course. While council and the city deal with the ramifications of open-season on food trucks, a new city manager, the quest for a just taxi license and gender balance on the Toronto Transit Commission, the city’s 2016 budget looms large – larger than is typical, in fact, thanks to the odd way that council decided to balance the 2015 budget. This was in March, when council approved a 2.75 per cent property tax increase for homeowners, and filled a $60-million shortfall by effectively borrowing from the city’s own capital financing capacity in future years. Services were generally sustained or even enhanced, taxpayers were mollified with a rateof-inflation increase, and the pain, Mayor John Tory

our exclusive look
Award boosts profile of local theatre company by Maria Tsavaras scm@insidetoronto.com
S
carborough Music Theatre recently won an award that saw it acknowledged by the theatre world’s epicentre: Broadway. It won Broadwayworld. com, Toronto’s 2014 Award for Best Community Theatre, second place for Best Community Theatre Production for Little Women, and third place for their production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. This recognition, as it was won by public votes, is a testament to the respect the group has garnered with theatre goers and groups within the GTA. Excited to have won and proud be recognized, current president, Rhoda Silzer, said Scarborough Music Theatre is using the momentum from this win to launch some exciting initiatives they hope will spark new interest, as well as further engage those who have supported them for the past 53 years. Silzer said part of her job is making sure the group doesn’t become stagnant, and they have come up with initiatives to re-engage the board, the members and entice potential new members. Recently, they hosted their first burlesque

show at Club 120 called Shhh, Don’t Tell Mama: SMT Presents a Touch of Burlesque. The one-night fundraising event helped raise money for a new sound board that is crucial for their shows. SMT will also be hosting a Music Theatre Summer
Camp the week of Aug. 17 to 21, for children aged 8 to12. Headed by actor, singer and teacher Elizabeth Van Wyck, this drama camp is part of SMT’s commitment to bringing theatre education to young people in Scarborough. Silzer said the camp will

offer a variety of activities including drama exercises, dancing and choreography, improv and music. “The whole idea of this is to start to introduce the youth in Scarborough... who are looking to do something theatre-related and creative,” she said. Internally, the group
has also decided to change things up, starting with the musicals they stage. Dot Routledge is an actor, director and SMT board member, who is also in charge of education and community outreach. She said with the three shows they stage each season, they have decided to make
sure they engage a variety of audience tastes. This includes one classic, one well-known musical, and one that is modern and one that will include children and teens. “We’ve been increasing our audience base, it’s been going back up in the last couple of years and I think part of that is because we’ve been trying to engage our audiences more,” Routledge said. She said the award has been great to use for show promotion, but also for enticing new performers and artistic staff, bringing fresh creativity to the SMT family. “There is a lot of new stuff that’s coming out,” Routledge said. The latest production, 9 TO 5: The Musical opens this evening at Scarborough Village Theatre and continues its run until May 23. Despite it being a popular movie starring Dolly Parton, Routledge, who is also performing in the show, said there are some country numbers, but more so pop and gospel numbers, as well as some fantastic female roles. Routledge said they will also begin offering donors and subscribers backstage tours, and chances to meet with the actors before and after shows. These are just a few of the ways SMT hopes to engage audience members and get more people involved in community musical theatre.

The Scarborough Hospital, serving one of Canada’s most diverse communities, has friends. And this spring, with the hospital’s needs growing fast, those friends are being asked to attend three different local events, each raising funds to make TSH’s Maternal Newborn and Child Care Program better for patients. The Scarborough Hospital Fo u n d a t i o n’s C h i n e s e Philanthropic Council hosts a fundraising dinner this Friday, May 8, declaring, “I support my Scarborugh Hospital. Will you?” “Our future generation needs our support,” its organizers said in a release, explaining why they chose to support maternal and child program improvements at TSH Birchmount. “The Scarborough Hospital will be there for us, with our help.” The gala dinner is at the
Casa Deluz Banquet Hall, on Sandhurst Circle at Woodside Square, near McCowan Road and Finch Avenue. Tickets, which are $128 each, can be ordered through Miranda Zheng and Gloria Lee at 416-443-8600, or by email at cpc.tshf@gmail. com. June 7 On June 7, the Foundation hosts annual Canadian Tamils’ Chamber of Commerce WalkA-Thon, a three-kilometre walk at L’Amoreaux Park’s Kids Town Water Park on Birchmount Road. “Many members of the Tamil community visit The Scarborough Hospital for their medical needs and we feel it’s important to give back and support the hospital so it can continue to provide compassionate, high quality care,” Sinnnadurai Jeyakumar, the chamber’s president, said
in a release. More on the Walk-A-Thon, which has been held each year since 1999, is at www. CTCCWalk.com Another event – this one, the first of its kind – will be held June 12 and promises “culinary delights of the world.” The Scarborough Women of Philanthropy Council say The Taste of Scarborough is “a garden party turned gourmet food festival at a private residence” where foodies can support a great cause. Tickets are $125, but only $100 until May 12. The TSH Foundation is hoping to refurbish the Maternal Newborn and Child Care Program at TSH Birchmount, where facilities have been described as aging.

Metrolinx will hold a public meeting early next week to share its plan for separating the Davenport Diamond rail crossing. It’s already been reported Metrolinx will launch an Environmental Assessment (EA) in late summer for building an overpass to elevate GO Transit rail service over CP Rail freight train traffic which currently meets at the crossing. Metrolinx established a resident panel to offer suggestions for transforming the lands freed up below the new overpass, which could be used for new public space. The meeting is May 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Centre. For more information visit www.metrolinx.com/ RERDavenport

CRITICIZED FOR WINTER ROAD CARE wMINISTRY
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation promised swift changes following a report by the auditor general critical of its decision to contract out winter maintenance to the private sector. Released last week, Bonnie Lysyk’s report concludes contracting out work to the private sector has led to reduced expenses for the Ministry – but at the cost of a steady decline in maintenance standards. In a statement the ministry said the auditor general’s findings align with its own

The TTC announced it will complete construction of the second subway platform at Union Station in coming weeks. The station was closed again last weekend as work crews completed final touches to the new Yonge line platform ahead of the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. It will be the last time the station is closed before the Games begin in July due to the construction. The platform actually opened last year, but in an unfinished state. Its final design includes an immense “art wall” which doubles as a glass divider spanning the length of the Yonge and University waiting platforms. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. Students take part in ‘sex ed strike’ MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Parents striking against Ontario’s new sex education curriculum pulled hundreds of students out of schools in Scarborough, East York and Etobicoke, Toronto’s public school board said. The first day of a declared week-long strike saw only around 130 students, about 10 per cent, attend Thorncliffe Park Public School, one of the city’s largest. Some 1,220 children were absent from Thorncliffe, the largest single success in a campaign against the planned introduction of updated health and physical education lessons in September. A Facebook group declared the strike would last all week, and encouraged parents to download letters to send to schools, explaining they consider the curriculum “ageinappropriate” and in conflict with their values. “We believe that it is our responsibility to teach these values to our children and
have the greatest authority over how and when such sensitive topics are being introduced to our children,” the letter says. Hundreds involved In Scarborough, just over 700 children did not attend Cornell Junior Public School, near Markham and Scarborough Golf Club roads, though 150 students arrived as usual. “We’re open, and staff are here and working,” said Maureen Coyle, Cornell’s principal. At around 2 p.m., the Toronto District School Board said it did not have a number yet of absences across the city. Board officials, however, noted the absences were heavy in some areas of the city, including Thorncliffe, the Kingsview Village area in Etobicoke, and some parts of Scarborough. Schools were working to confirm the reasons for absences, since though
many parents handed letters to principals and teachers in advance, others spoke to them without sending a letter. “When a child is not in school, we’re expecting a parent to call and say why,” said Shari Schwartz-Maltz, a board spokesperson. School principals, meanwhile, are doing their best to address “misconceptions” about the curriculum, Schwartz-Maltz said, urging parents to talk to principals and teachers, go through the curriculum and “continue the dialogue.” “Parents can protest as they wish but we’d like the kids to come back to school,” she said. Parent groups opposed to the new plan want the province to restart consultations on the curriculum, but Education Minister Liz Sandals has said the update will be introduced as planned.

Make the most of small living spaces Make your small spaces feel comfortable and inviting with these small home improvement projects Tiny houses are a recent phenomenon and have spurred many businesses - from builders to decorating experts - looking to connect with consumers who want to go small. The small house movement advocates for living simply in small homes, some of which can be as small as 100 square feet or less. Although living in a tiny house is not for everyone, many people prefer small-space living to living in larger, more spacious homes and apartments. For those looking to make the most of their small living spaces, there are ways to make such living arrangements feel larger. · Light is your friend. Establish adequate lighting in a room that includes at least three working lights. Varied light sources from different angles will eliminate dark corners and shadows that can make a space feel smaller. Lighting also can draw the eye where you want it and distract attention from the room’s flaws. · Make use of vertical space. Homes where space is at a premium may have limited storage areas. An often-overlooked storage option is vertical space. Space above doors, shelving, and areas above cabinetry are ideal places to store items. Use hooks on walls to keep belongings off the floor. · Choose light-coloured paint. Choose lighter hues for your home furnishings and wall colours. You do not have to limit this to white (unless landlords require white walls). Pale
colours will help reflect light and can make the room seem larger than it really is. Using a dark colour on the flooring can make other lighter shades really pop in contrast. · Conceal the clutter. If you cannot keep personal belongings to the utmost minimum in a home, experiment with clever ways to keep items out of sight. Furniture that serves dual purposes can help with this task. Storage ottomans will conceal small toys or linens and also provide seating options in a room when guests come over. A dresser can be used as a dining room buffet piece, and the numerous drawers can hold knickknacks or silverware. Furniture with built-in, hidden storage is well worth the investment when living spaces are limited. · Create dual-purpose rooms. Lack of space means getting creative with the space you do have. A nook in your bedroom can be devoted to a miniature home office. Perhaps you can establish a crafting centre in a portion of your laundry room. Garages have long served as catch-all spaces in homes. Apart from storage, they can be subdivided for home gyms or even a place to gather and watch a ballgame. · Hang mirrors to “expand” rooms. Mirrors can trick the eye into believing there is more space in a room. Mirrors melt away room borders and can accelerate the flow of light. Hanging them throughout your home can
Make your rooms look more spacious by using light-coloured paints and avoiding any clutter.
make spaces seem larger. · Think about built-in furniture. Traditional furniture may not be practical for small spaces and can waste a lot of room. Custom-built furniture is often the way to go to maximize the area you do have. Employ a little do-it-yourself initiative
as well, customizing items for the perfect fit. · Work with a designer. If you’re having difficulty making a small space work for you, consult with an interior designer or a contractor for some ideas.

Council votes to defer decision on rolling back taxi reforms DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto Council has put off dealing with the contentious issue of whether to roll back taxi reforms until after the city learns how its case against the ride-sharing company Uber Canada plays out in court. The matter landed on the floor of council Tuesday, May 5 accompanied by a crowd of hundreds of taxi drivers, plate owners, lobbyists and activists — and a recommendation from the city’s Licensing and Standards Committee to reinstate the old standard taxi license that council had decided to phase out last year. That license can be owned by anyone, and can also be bought and sold – in recent years, for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The new system approved last year allows the standard licenses to persist until the owner dies or sells the license, at which point it is converted
to an owner-operator license that cannot be bought or sold. Owners of old and new licenses lobbied the committee intensely for the vote. When it came to council, however, Mayor John Tory stepped in and moved a deferral of the item until another game-changing livery decision came forward: the outcome of Toronto’s lawsuit against upstart ride-sharing app Uber is resolved. process Tory derided the process by which the matter came to council, calling it “public policy making at its worst.” He added that it was “a disservice to sausages” to compare the process to sausage making. Tory said it made sense to consider Toronto’s taxi industry as a whole — and it was impossible to do that until matters with Uber Canada were sorted out. The city is taking Uber to court over its
decision to operate in the city without a taxi license, essentially outside the city’s regulatory framework. Uber applied for such a license this week, as the debate was getting set to go. “For us to look at issues like this on a piecemeal basis, often under heavy pressure… is a mistake,” said Tory. Tory took heat from some of the proponents of rolling back the reforms. Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser suggested that by moving the deferral “you’re making Uber a player in the game while we’ve got a court case.” Tory responded: “I would say to you all I’m doing is deferring it until the court case. And you are most welcome to vote against it.” The matter returns to council with a report on the outcome of the Uber case.

The Mayor’s Task Force on Toronto Community Housing would like to hear from you.
North Scarborough residents warned about rash of break-ins >>>from page 1 geting houses that have bushes, hedges and trees concealing the front door and windows. “Do not have your front entrances, your windows or backyard covered by overgrown trees or bushes,” said Heaney, adding in some cases residents also didn’t activate their home alarm systems. In several break-ins, the suspects were acting as doorto-door solicitors. Some residents were home when the offence occurred and confronted the suspects. But the residents waited a long time before contacting authorities. “Instead of calling the police immediately, they’ve
either cleaned up, they’ve tried to chase the people themselves, they’ve waited for family members to come home,” said Heaney, of 42 Division. “I have a lot officers out there both in uniform and plainclothes to combat this problem, so...we do have officers close by. If we do get those calls immediately, it will help us apprehend the people responsible.” COMMERCIAL BREAK-INS Police are also asking residents to report suspicious behaviour in their neighbourhood like people knocking on doors, asking for random names or addresses, or doorto-door solicitors who don’t
have proper ID or knowledge of the product or service they’re supposedly selling. Police from 42 Division are also investigating five nighttime commercial break-ins in the past five months where ginseng was stolen. Heaney believes the breakins stem from a world-wide shortage of ginseng, which has raised the value of the herb. “Some of these places have 40 or 50,000 dollars plus of ginseng,” said Heaney. He noted that commercial businesses that sell ginseng in bulk have been targeted in these incidents.

pronounced dead on scene. The OPP is warning motorists to be “cognizant of the hazards present on highways at this time of year” such as sand, gravel and wildlife.

Dementia expert Teepa Snow to speak at The Caregiver Show DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Respected dementia educator Teepa Snow has a message for caregivers: take time to take care of yourself. “This is incredibly stressful and challenging, and it gets more so as the disease progresses. You have to learn to take care of yourself and recognize you have needs. You can’t not need something,” she said. “You have to pause and make sure you’re doing OK.” Snow said there are resources out there to help, but caregivers will need to seek them out themselves. One such place to seek out support is at The Caregiver Show, coming up Saturday, May 30, at Centennial College in Scarborough, where Snow will be a guest speaker. Admission is free. She said it’s a huge plus to have a number of resources, which can offer support through the various stages of the caregiver’s journey, all under one roof. Most people, she said, don’t know how to access the resources they need nor do they know how to look for them until they’re so far along they’re desperate for it. However, by that time comes, they won’t have time to look for it because they are busy taking care of a person. Besides finding helpful resources, caregivers will be among others in situations like their own, which can help relieve feelings of isolation. “It makes a huge difference because if I know there are other people out there like me then I don’t feel like my person is doing it to me deliberately and I don’t believe there isn’t any hope or help,” Snow said. Snow is considered one of America’s leading educators on dementia. A registered occupational therapist for more than 30 years, her philosophy reflects her education, work experience, available medical research and her first-hand care giving interactions. Her early days as a caregiver were spent taking care of her grandfather who had vascular dementia.

Teepa Snow will be a guest speaker at The Caregiver Show on May 30 in Scarborough.
She realized she was a good caregiver and went to college and then began working with people with dementia, and has picked up more skills along the way, which she now passes on to others. She has three main points she wants people to hear when she will speak at the local show. She wants caregivers to recognize the need to take care of themselves, particularly if they’re going to be in it for the long-haul; caregivers need to understand what is happening to the people they are caring for; and that having the right skills to care for someone does matter. Of the last point, she said, it’s not enough to want to do something. Caregivers need to know how to do what they need to do. They will need to learn those skills. Snow said it’s easy to think dementia is memory loss, but it’s actually much more severe than that. “It’s hard to picture what all that means unless somebody helps you through that,” she said. “Most individuals don’t get that kind of support and skill and knowledge building

that they actually need to do this. It’s like a marathon race.” Two-thirds of caregivers are women, she said, and it could be a spouse or child of the person, or even a friend. For each, the dynamics are different, she said. “With friends, it’s really different. There comes a point in the relationship where it’s ‘Ooh, it’s getting way intense,’” she said. It will start with helping with groceries, doing banking and cleaning the house and other minor errands. “And then, before this is all over, there’s going to be all kinds of personal care and intimate care, getting in and out of bed, and on and off a toilet. Nobody is really thinking that when they’re thinking its memory problems.” She said care giving is more than any one person can do, and caregivers need to learn how to ask for help. “Do not try to do this alone. I don’t care how much you love somebody. It’s not about love. This thing will take you down if you try to do it alone,” she said. Snow said it’s important to find somebody who can step in when you need to step out, and caregivers need to get used to the idea of asking for help. She reminds caregivers to breathe. “Recognize the importance of taking five minutes and finding the thing that makes you feel like you’re a human being again and you have value. That could be journaling, it could

be reading, it could be out walking. You just need to give yourself five minutes to recharge your battery,” she said. She said it’s difficult being with the person you think you know, who isn’t quite that person any more. The journey is an emotional roller coaster. “You can have moments of joy, but you don’t get a whole day of them,” she said. The caregiver should learn to enjoy and celebrate the joyful times, Snow said, and figure out how to get through the hard moments. Along with Snow, health and nutrition expert Rose Reisman will also be a guest speaker at The Caregiver Show. It takes place in the Athletics Wellness Centre at Centennial College’s Progress Campus, 941 Progress Ave. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
